Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast and what a
- 0:08Speaker 1: game for the Chicago Bears not so much for the
- 0:11Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks and that's oh that was tough to watch
- 0:15Speaker 1: if you're a Seattle Seahawks fan they just got dismantled
- 0:19Speaker 1: on both sides of the football and it's unfortunate the
- 0:21Speaker 1: Bears you get Ben Johnson in that offense a ton
- 0:24Speaker 1: of credit Caleb Williams walked the ball down the field
- 0:27Speaker 1: first drive of the game scored a touchdown said gave
- 0:30Speaker 1: the shush, Luther Burton gave the shush to the crowd,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and I said, we've seen this movie before, we've been
- 0:35Speaker 1: here before, come in here thinking you're about to king
- 0:38Speaker 1: your way through. Seattle gets the ball, goes down the field,
- 0:42Speaker 1: it's a field goal. That's when I got a little concerned.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I said, ah, you gotta get a touchdown night drive,
- 0:47Speaker 1: but it is what it is. And throughout this game,
- 0:51Speaker 1: there were moments the Seattle Seahawks could have took control
- 0:54Speaker 1: of this game, could have stayed relatively close, um, But
- 1:00Speaker 1: they didn't. They didn't. And the problem started offensively on
- 1:05Speaker 1: third down. Third down has been a problem for this
- 1:09Speaker 1: team and continues to be a problem for this team.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I know people may feel like, oh, Quentin Nelson, man,
- 1:16Speaker 1: he's not worth the money. Offensive linemen take a second
- 1:20Speaker 1: to blossom in jail and do all that. Their offensive
- 1:23Speaker 1: line is going to be fine. I think once Charles
- 1:25Speaker 1: Cross gets back, Gray Zabel is still Still getting used to,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know, the footwork. The little things are going to
- 1:34Speaker 1: be different for this offensive line. I do think they're
- 1:36Speaker 1: going to be fine. The offensive, I mean, the run
- 1:40Speaker 1: game is still stagnant. Not getting enough out of the
- 1:42Speaker 1: run game. And Sam, you know, Sam has to play
- 1:47Speaker 1: better than he did tonight. 247 yards. He had the
- 1:50Speaker 1: touchdown to Jackson Smith and to Jacob on that third
- 1:51Speaker 1: and ten on the double move. But outside of that,
- 1:55Speaker 1: he was under duress the entire day. And the Chicago Bears...
- 2:01Speaker 1: They got Simmons, and my goodness, my goodness, does Simmons
- 2:05Speaker 1: make a difference. He had six tackles, two tackles for
- 2:08Speaker 1: a loss. But his impact, his presence was felt throughout.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I mean, he opened up a few sacks for Josh Swett.
- 2:17Speaker 1: They probably, they had three that they got credited for,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but they had five on the day. Two of them
- 2:22Speaker 1: got called back for holding penalties. But if this is
- 2:26Speaker 1: a sample of things to come for this Chicago Bears defense,
- 2:29Speaker 1: then whoa. the rest of the league. I mean, I
- 2:32Speaker 1: got to really, really think about my power rankings. Caleb,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I know you're watching. I'm going to really, really think
- 2:38Speaker 1: about how high they are going in my power rankings
- 2:40Speaker 1: because this was a dominant performance on both sides of
- 2:43Speaker 1: the football, on the road, against the defending champion, Seattle Seahawks,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and this defense was healthy. This defense, this isn't a
- 2:50Speaker 1: game where you're like, hey, they're missing this guy. They're
- 2:52Speaker 1: missing this guy up front. They're missing that guy. No,
- 2:56Speaker 1: they're pretty whole. The Seattle Seahawks defense was pretty whole.
- 3:01Speaker 1: This is the lineup they want to put out against people.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And unfortunately, the Chicago Bears found their way and they
- 3:08Speaker 1: found gaps and they found holes and they found lanes
- 3:11Speaker 1: within this defense. There were some cool plays, that screen
- 3:16Speaker 1: pass that they completed to Philippe Raymond. And he goes up,
- 3:23Speaker 1: he splits the Seattle Seahawks defense. It could have been
- 3:26Speaker 1: a touchdown. It ends up not being a touchdown. I
- 3:28Speaker 1: think they scored a few plays later. But that was
- 3:30Speaker 1: a microcosm of how this night went for the Seattle
- 3:33Speaker 1: Seahawks and how great things went for the Chicago Bears.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Ben Johnson did a phenomenal job. If you talk about
- 3:39Speaker 1: this matchup between the play callers, Ben Johnson had the
- 3:42Speaker 1: one up in this matchup. I'm sure these two teams
- 3:45Speaker 1: will meet again. I would love to see this game
- 3:47Speaker 1: in the playoffs. I know Seattle Seahawks fans are probably
- 3:50Speaker 1: feeling like, oh, man, we don't want to see these
- 3:51Speaker 1: guys again. But in order to win the Super Bowl
- 3:54Speaker 1: this year, I guarantee this team is going to factor
- 3:57Speaker 1: into it. Sam Donald has to be cleaner with the football.
- 4:02Speaker 1: They clearly didn't want to run Zach Charbonnet too much.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Jadarian Price had 10 carries. Charbonnet had six carries. Neither
- 4:08Speaker 1: one of them had more than 30 yards. Jackson Smith
- 4:11Speaker 1: and Jigba had four for 92, but didn't do much
- 4:14Speaker 1: in the second half. and eventually defenses are going to
- 4:19Speaker 1: catch on to what this team is doing, and they're
- 4:21Speaker 1: going to need help from other guys. They're going to
- 4:23Speaker 1: need Cooper Cup to get involved. He had a touchdown
- 4:26Speaker 1: on the day. They're going to need the tight ends.
- 4:28Speaker 1: They're going to need A.J. Barner, Arroyo. They're going to
- 4:32Speaker 1: need other guys. Horton had a few catches today. They're
- 4:34Speaker 1: going to need other guys to step up, but the
- 4:37Speaker 1: run game has to get going. They have to be
- 4:39Speaker 1: better on first and second down. If they're ever going
- 4:42Speaker 1: to have the success they want to have, with this offense.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I think the offensive line is going to get it together.
- 4:47Speaker 1: The defensive line, on the other hand, there's a bit
- 4:49Speaker 1: of concern. That was one of the best offensive lines
- 4:53Speaker 1: in the National Football League. The Chicago Bears have one
- 4:55Speaker 1: of the best offensive lines in the National Football League,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but still, only one sack in a game. I don't
- 5:00Speaker 1: think Mike really wanted to go after Caleb Williams. He
- 5:03Speaker 1: understands how pressure and bringing too many guys leaves you
- 5:07Speaker 1: too exposed in the back end, but I think I
- 5:11Speaker 1: think that you have to find a way to get
- 5:14Speaker 1: more pressure on Caleb Williams, uh, in order and hope
- 5:19Speaker 1: your guys stand up in the back end. I'm sure
- 5:20Speaker 1: Mike is going to get these things corrected. Uh, the
- 5:23Speaker 1: things that are fixable offensively, they have to get this
- 5:26Speaker 1: run game fixed. I don't know if they're going to
- 5:28Speaker 1: have to go away from the zone and go into
- 5:31Speaker 1: a gap scheme, but one for 10 on, on third
- 5:34Speaker 1: down isn't acceptable. And it's, it's been a consistent problem
- 5:38Speaker 1: all season long. So, uh, On the flip side, Caleb Williams, really,
- 5:44Speaker 1: really good game. Nothing earth-shattering. 24 of 34 for 247
- 5:48Speaker 1: yards and one touchdown, 101 passer rating. But he did enough.
- 5:53Speaker 1: He did enough. He didn't take any risk. He didn't
- 5:55Speaker 1: put the ball in harm's way. He kept drives alive
- 6:00Speaker 1: with his leg on. He took one sack today. He
- 6:02Speaker 1: got Roman Dunzey, the UW product, involved early and often
- 6:06Speaker 1: in this game. And, you know, this is probably one
- 6:09Speaker 1: of his better games of his career. Luther Burden obviously
- 6:13Speaker 1: had the touchdown early on. Koston Loveland was a thorn
- 6:16Speaker 1: in the side of the Seattle Seahawks defense all night long.
- 6:21Speaker 1: DeAndre Sweat got a lot of gritty yards. He had
- 6:24Speaker 1: 27 carries, only 69 yards, 2.6 yards a carry, but
- 6:28Speaker 1: had three touchdowns in the game. He was the closer
- 6:30Speaker 1: for them tonight. This was a rough, rough game. This
- 6:34Speaker 1: is going to be a rough tape for the Seattle
- 6:36Speaker 1: Seahawks to watch. Tomorrow, unfortunately. But, you know, I think
- 6:43Speaker 1: most of these things are correctable. Chicago looks like one
- 6:46Speaker 1: of the best teams in the National Football League. And
- 6:48Speaker 1: with Kansas City losing two in a row, San Francisco's
- 6:54Speaker 1: on a bye. Buffalo won. We'll see, Chicago. We'll see
- 7:00Speaker 1: how high you move up the rankings. The Vikings lost. Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 1: If they're any higher than, I mean, any lower than three, I,
- 7:09Speaker 1: you know, that'd be foolishness with how they played and
- 7:12Speaker 1: maybe higher. We shall see. Seattle Seahawks fans, it's back
- 7:16Speaker 1: to the drawing board. Unfortunately, we got to figure this
- 7:19Speaker 1: thing out. I think Sam just has to find his confidence.
- 7:22Speaker 1: He has to find his confidence and he has to
- 7:24Speaker 1: have confidence in his offensive line. They have to get
- 7:26Speaker 1: these protection issues settled and solved because without time, without
- 7:31Speaker 1: the ability to process down the field, he's a really
- 7:33Speaker 1: good processor. He, he, He can put the ball where
- 7:36Speaker 1: it needs to be. But with no time, nobody's a
- 7:38Speaker 1: great quarterback. And that's what we saw tonight. A 17-point
- 7:42Speaker 1: loss at home is one that leaves you scratching your head.
- 7:46Speaker 1: A team that is the reigning Super Bowl champs. But
- 7:50Speaker 1: there's still a lot of season left. We'll see if
- 7:52Speaker 1: they can get it corrected. You know, Sam Darnold threw
- 7:56Speaker 1: two touchdown passes on the day. You know, he's now
- 7:59Speaker 1: got more touchdown passes than interceptions on the season. But just...
- 8:04Speaker 1: Got to protect him better. Got to get the run
- 8:06Speaker 1: game going. You support a quarterback with a great run game.
- 8:09Speaker 1: That's the problem right now. Obviously, this is Price's first game,
- 8:13Speaker 1: Charbonnet's first game, Quentin Nelson's first game with the Seahawks.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You know, a lot of things can get fixed going through. But,
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know, we shall see because the playoff picture is
- 8:25Speaker 1: starting to sort itself out. And right now the Seattle
- 8:28Speaker 1: Seahawks are on the outside looking in, and that is
- 8:30Speaker 1: not where you want to be. The Bears– though, are
- 8:33Speaker 1: having an incredible trip back home, thinking about the possibilities.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Jonathan Simmons is sitting there thinking about how he was
- 8:41Speaker 1: in Tennessee, figuring out Cabo San Lucas plans in January.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And now he's thinking he may be on the best
- 8:51Speaker 1: team in football with how they played tonight. You know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: things can change week to week. The National Football League
- 8:56Speaker 1: never ceases to amaze me. But as always, I appreciate
- 8:59Speaker 1: you guys joining me You could be anywhere in the world,
- 9:01Speaker 1: but you're here with me. Hit that like and sub button.
