- 2:16you who don't know, I do have merch I have logo items for the

- 3:15to hip Hopdx dot com, Djbooth dot net, TheSource Magazine dot com,
- 3:23BT dot com, and a couple of places where I'm getting some of these
- 3:28stories from. Let's get right into the business. So maybe you're new here
- 3:35and you don't know, you're just getting to know Vegas. Let me tell
- 3:40you a quick story before I get into this headline. The BT hip Hop
- 3:44Awards just happened. I did not know. You know, I didn't know
- 3:50because I haven't watched an award show in its entirety and over. Oh my
- 3:57god, it gotta be like almost thirty years. I'm not even on front.
- 4:01It's up there. It might be twenty five or something like that,
- 4:05or even twenty two, just being generous. And my reason for that is
- 4:10I'm not on any strike. You know. I'm not like, oh,
- 4:13I'm protesting none of that. It just got to a point where I wasn't
- 4:16as interested as I used to be when I was much younger. When I
- 4:21was much younger, I wanted to see performances and see who would win and
- 4:27things like that. Now, because I probably know a little bit too much
- 4:31about this industry, not to say that it isn't an entertaining watch for you.
- 4:39It's just that a lot of the performances sometimes are lacking and or rely
- 4:46too heavy on theatrics around the you know, the artists. I remember when
- 4:53DMX debuted his new song, I forget the name of it, but it
- 4:58was the one like did at that? Who we be? That record?
- 5:01Right? Nobody had heard it before. It was just DMX on the stage
- 5:06the song and his hype made me hype for that song. I liked that
- 5:12song and it made me hype for his album. That's what I'm talking about.
- 5:15Performances like that where you don't really need much because the artist is enough,
- 5:20right, Not that everything has to be that, because I've seen some
- 5:23dope shows with you know, pyrotechnics and whips and cars and stuff like that.
- 5:30But there's that part, and then also there's the awards part. Right,
- 5:33A lot of times there's some politics involved, you know sometimes unfortunately got
- 5:38to look at who's producing, who's on the voting panel, and things like
- 5:43that, and it kind of makes sense like as to not only who wins
- 5:46sometimes but who even gets nominated. And I think we just live in a
- 5:53day and age, especially now with the Internet and just being able to connect
- 6:00to content from your favorite artists or new artists that half the time you've already
- 6:06kind of seen what they can offer from a performance, or you've already kind
- 6:12of heard it, or whatever the case may be. But more importantly,
- 6:15when it comes to the music, so much of it comes out and in
- 6:19my line of content creation, I absorb so much that I have an expectation
- 6:26for the best, and sometimes none of that is on the list for hip
- 6:31hop. So that's why I don't typically watch. I'll watch highlights, but
- 6:36I won't sit there through a three hour show and watch because I don't care
- 6:41that much. But you care, so I'm doing this for you. So
- 6:46the BT hip Hop Awards took place, and I think in a previous episode
- 6:51we talked about the nominees. Let's talk about the winners quick couple of highlights.
- 6:59Though Marley Marl was honored, it was a tribute to him. I
- 7:02think that was pretty dope because they got that right, to be honest,
- 7:09because a lot of times these award shows will give a Lifetime Achievement award to
- 7:17an artist or a producer that's kind of like a household name nowadays. You
- 7:23know, even if they're older, right, like grand Master Flash is,
- 7:27he still gets a lot of work. So and it's not just amongst the
- 7:31hip hop community or the black community. So he's kind of like a household
- 7:36name, right, even though it came out so long ago. But then
- 7:40there are people who the hip hop heads know and grand Master Flash would know,
- 7:45that are so important to the culture, but nobody knows them and nobody
- 7:49ever brings up their name. You know, you got to be a bunch
- 7:54of old heads for when they're talking about, you know, greatest producers of
- 7:57all time and you hear Mally Mal's name and get dropped. Because what you
- 8:01must understand that now there may be so many different producers who are quote unquote
- 8:09at the top. Back in the days, there was a moment where a
- 8:16single producer would like own production. For the most part, other people were
- 8:22producing. Don't get me wrong, it were high, but there was like
- 8:24the guy, and the guy would change periodically, right, and at one
- 8:31moment in time, Marlly Mal was the guy, like late eighties into the
- 8:37nineties, if you're count and Mama said, knock you out. Also,
- 8:41Molly mal was a guy for a minute, a number of hits, Juice
- 8:46Crew ll all of that. So that happened. I thought that was pretty
- 8:52dope that it happened. Coming hold up, this truck just going a truck,
- 8:58just driving right right in my neighborhood. Just I don't know why.
- 9:05So let's go over some of the awards and who won. Hip Hop Artists
- 9:09of the Year went to Kendrick Lamar and I think that's like some kind of
- 9:16record for him. But again, I don't care about Ward show, so
- 9:18you should look that up. Song of the Year went to Lil Uzi Vert
- 9:24just want to rock. First of all, I'm not mad at the Kendrick
- 9:28because mister Morale and the Big Steppers the tour, he was that guy.
- 9:33He deserved it. Song of the Year though, Little Uzzi Vert. Now,
- 9:39when I look at the songs that are here, and I'm just gonna
- 9:41name kind of the ones for that people know and not all of them,
- 9:46but like oh that are recognizable, like Little Dirk and j Cole all my
- 9:50life probably known more for the Jacob Verse, DJ Kelly, Rick Rosslow Wayne,
- 9:56jay Z, God did who else is here? Coyle Lay Players.
- 10:03That song was pretty popular, but that's what us Drake and twenty one Savage
- 10:07Rich Flex. I'm not a twenty one Savage fan, so I did not
- 10:13really listen to that album maybe once, but I think little Uzzi Vert should
- 10:20get this. And this is not really about songwriting. I know song of
- 10:24the Year, but when I tell you as an old head, the build
- 10:31of that song, that beat was just so infectious. It was fun.
- 10:37And he also was at WrestleMania with this, so I don't know that's my
- 10:41excuse, but don't forget what I said. This list of songs of the
- 10:48year should have been a little bit different. Hip Hop Album of the Year
- 10:52went to Drake and twenty one Savage just for context, so you know,
- 10:58Glo Riller was in it. Coyla Ray, DJ Khaled, Metro Booman,
- 11:03Jack Harlowe, Uzzi Vert and Meghan the Stallion. Guess which one of those
- 11:11were in my top five of last year? Not one. Best hip hop
- 11:18video litl Uzi Vert just won to rock, don't I don't know, I
- 11:22don't I don't really watch videos. Best collaboration Little Dirk and j Cole,
- 11:28even though if you asked me and there was one sided impact track Little Dirk
- 11:33featuring j Cole again. Now this is interesting because the nominees were Nas thirty,
- 11:41Megan thee Stallion, Anxiety, Simba Can't Win for Nothing. That record
- 11:46is Dope, nl E Chopper, who Guts God did Killer Mike three stacks
- 11:54in Future Scientists and Engineers. I think that had impact for two seconds.
- 12:00I still like it, but it was like two seconds. And Robert Glassper
- 12:03featured in mc miller Therapy Part two. All right, best duo or group
- 12:07Drake and twenty one Savage. That was almost like a no brainer because I
- 12:13don't know, it just seemed where Now, if we want to be real,
- 12:18he's the duos and groups named for that year, City Girls, DJ
- 12:22Drum and Jeezy Drake and twenty one Savage, Earth Gang, Larry June and
- 12:28the Alchemists quaver On Takeoff. Now, out of those, if I'm just
- 12:37selecting from those, no, I'm not picking Larry June and the Alchemists.
- 12:41I'm not a fan of the disinterested rhyme style. I'm sorry, don't mean,
- 12:46ain't whack. It's just not my cup of tea and when I say
- 12:48disinterested talking about the way Larry June rhyme's and the way Body James rhyme.
- 12:56You know what I'm talking about? That didlot. I don't really want to
- 12:58be here, but here goes he goes from Raps. But that album from
- 13:05Takeoff and Kueo was I kind of liked it a lot, a lot a
- 13:13lot, so hey. Best live performer Kendrick Lamar. This kind of hands
- 13:18down best breakthrough hip hop artists Ice Spice. Now you want to talk about
- 13:24industry plants? She is no different from Takashi six nine, Like, do
- 13:35you even know what rap is? Because you look like a deer in headlights
- 13:39while you're rapping. Okay. Lyricists of the Year Kendrick Lamar, Now let's
- 13:46go. Let's go because my fans, you know, we like bars.
- 13:50So do I say pauls for that? I don't who cares. Lyricists of
- 13:56the Year twenty one. Savage was nominated. Okay, let's keep going.
- 14:01Andre three thousand, damn didn't he just have a verse We're starving out here,
- 14:07all right, burn a boy, stop it. I don't see dancehall
- 14:11or afro beat, afro futurists. I don't see. Okay whatever, Cardi
- 14:18bat what. I don't know Cardi bb having singles. Conway the Machine,
- 14:24No, they didn't. Okay, he's on here. Well, at least
- 14:26that's good. Drake J. Cooles a couple of verses Kendrick Lamar, Yeah
- 14:33to me, Conway and Kendrick should be considered because they had albums. But
- 14:41at the end of the day, I don't know. Just to BET Ords
- 14:46Producer of the Year, this is the last couple. Producer of the Year
- 14:48went to Metro Booming Blasphemy. This for last year. Hold up, Blasphemy
- 14:56should go to hip Boy every year until him and now stop. Okay,
- 15:03even Alchemists should have had a shot. I don't know. I guess so.
- 15:07Video director of the Air Kendrick Lamar and Dave free Dan Kendrick Lamar cleaned
- 15:11up BET hip Hop Awards, y'all. That was That's what happened. I
- 15:18didn't watch. You can go over to hip Hop d x dot com.
- 15:20They got a layout of who won, or you can go to BET.
- 15:24I saw a snippet of one cipher kind of kept it moving. I just
- 15:31I just don't care as much as I used to. But it's always interesting
- 15:35to see who's nominated and who wins, and the same goals for the Grammys.
- 15:39So we'll see Swiss Beats and Timberland now that they have Versus back because
- 15:50they sold it, but now they got it back, they say it's coming
- 15:54back soon and it's going to be better than what it was when they sold
- 15:58it. I'm not gonna spend too much time on this, y'all. I'm
- 16:04like doing these long episodes. But do we care? Do we really care?
- 16:15I kind of somewhat, I think for those that don't know. I
- 16:22don't know how you didn't know, we al was in the house resting peace
- 16:26of the people who passed away as a result of coronavirus. But during the
- 16:30lockdown, you know, there were wasn't much entertainment right Sports was on hold
- 16:37for a second, you know, or it returned in some kind of weird
- 16:41way with you know, just empty place and stuff like that. And one
- 16:47of the things that kind of united and I'm gonna just keep it a buck
- 16:51because it is what it is. Black culture while we were in our homes
- 16:57was Versus. Not that it was exclusive to us, but it was definitely
- 17:03for us by us. Okay, Fuboo and when it started. Originally it
- 17:11basically was a concept that Pete Rock and I think DJ Premier did. Originally
- 17:22they used to do like a pe Rock versus Primo kind of thing, like
- 17:26in concert almost, but it wasn't a big thing. So during the pandemic,
- 17:32when Swiss and Timberland started to put these things together, it was cool
- 17:37because you got to see like your favorite artist or producer whoever was in the
- 17:41versus like at home playing joints. But it was it was like piecemeal because
- 17:49you know, like for example, when it was Premier versus Riza, Premier
- 17:55kind of already had a setup because he already, like with DJ to the
- 17:59Internet live anyway, so he already had a setup for his audio, whereas
- 18:03Rizza Sauna kind of didn't and looked like he's playing from a stereo for a
- 18:08second, or like from his computer or whatever. So it was like all
- 18:14these weird quirks. But it was kind of dope to see Riza's in lockdown,
- 18:18but he got dressed for versus and he in his living room, you
- 18:22know what I'm saying, Like Premiers in his lab in his crib, and
- 18:26you know, we're all online and talking and you know, you got your
- 18:30own personal group chats, you making comments on Instagram because it was like it
- 18:36was an Instagram thing, and you know, maybe tweeting. Like it was
- 18:40just just all this social interaction around music and nostalgia. And I think in
- 18:47a lot of ways it sustained a lot of people. You know, they
- 18:48had something to look forward to beyond just like watching Netflix or listening to music,
- 18:56or playing a video game or talking on internet. This was like going
- 19:00to just one big concert and everybody can attend, can attend. But I
- 19:07was gonna say for free, but you got to pay for internet, but
- 19:11you know what I mean, for free. So it was cool. And
- 19:14then it kind of evolved into more of a Okay, we're still in lockdown,
- 19:19but now we in this isolated location where everybody has to you know,
- 19:25get checked and it's not a crowd and all of that. And now it's
- 19:27being presented, so now it sounds better and you could see the people together
- 19:34and the DJ could handle you know, the mixing, and it just went
- 19:38on and on from ned to you know, then there was a little crowd,
- 19:42and then it got to I think the last couple and I don't know
- 19:47if this might have been. Once they sold it, it was more like
- 19:51concert based, right, like come out to this concert, Big Daddy came
- 19:56versus kras One. So it evolved in it's something dope, and there was
- 20:00a certain level of momentum right from not only or evolution, I should say,
- 20:08but not only to well both you had versus changing from this in your
- 20:15crib over the internet thing to a constant situation and as the same time as
- 20:21you had people being on lockdown and restrictions being lifted about gatherings and you know,
- 20:29venues and you know COVID shots and stuff like that. So it was
- 20:33dope because it was like, oh, this is where we are now.
- 20:37They created something during the pandemic and here we are, and then they sold
- 20:41it and it didn't do well. Whatever they booked I can't remember, but
- 20:48not Timbland and Swiss Beach, but who they sold it to, which I
- 20:52think was Triller something like that, and who also did like the box and
- 20:57stuff and YouTubers fighting. But it just got to a point where it was
- 21:03just so not what it was and everybody was back outside and regular concerts were
- 21:11happening, and these verses weren't happening as frequent as they used to. It
- 21:21just wasn't the same thing anymore. It slowed, they lost the momentum,
- 21:27and it kind of felt, at least to me, like that was a
- 21:33time to be alive, when we was all locked down and that thing that
- 21:37time when Jadakiss did what he did to dip set. But now we don't
- 21:44care anymore. And who else would you get at this point? You know?
- 21:51So according to Timberland and Swiss Beats, not only is it coming back,
- 21:55and not only do they now have it, they feel like it's going
- 22:00to return to form and just really quick. And I quote me and my
- 22:07brother created something special and it ain't over, said Timberland on Hip Hop DX
- 22:12dot com. I believe. Oh that's where I'm getting this from Black Owned
- 22:17versus me and Swiss Beats. I'm glad to share this with my brother and
- 22:22here Swiss Beats, like Tim said, we own versus again. We got
- 22:29quiet for a minute, but we're gonna come back strong and show you what
- 22:33it is. This wasn't just something for the pandemic. That's something for the
- 22:37world. And apparently this announcement was at the BET Awards. See I don't
- 22:42watch you and I guess I miss out both kiss Now do we care?
- 22:48I don't? Do you care? Is the key? I think. For
- 22:56one, they're gonna have to have a mean lineup that's going to make you
- 23:00because there's some there's some verses that we did not get that I think people
- 23:07would show up for if it was going to happen. Let's just say it
- 23:11Nas versus Jay Z would everybody would be back on board if it happened,
- 23:18But it might never happen. Mary J Blise versus somebody she said she would
- 23:25just put on one album and walk away. Depends on who's standing next to
- 23:30her. One of them is in jail, but we're not gonna mention him.
- 23:37But I mean, that's to me, that's what it takes. It
- 23:41depends on the lineup, It depends on the interests and also the presentation,
- 23:47because they can say it wasn't a pandemic thing, but that was the glory
- 23:52day when it was the pandemic and people couldn't go to see especially those who
- 23:57would have gone to see it. That was the glory days. Now it's
- 24:03turned into more of a spectacle with you know, certain people just not living
- 24:08up to expectations, like Shaka Khan and Marion and them like it became more
- 24:15of some buffoonery things, So I don't know. They have a lot of
- 24:18damage control to do in order for people to carr again. And lastly,
- 24:30so west Side Gun if you follow him on Instagram, if you follow him
- 24:33on Twitter, but specifically Instagram, well I guess both. He is pretty
- 24:38active. He is a true leader in the sense that he will start the
- 24:45hype train and make sure it lands in the station. He has a new
- 24:52album out called and Then You Pray for Me, which is sort of like
- 24:57a sequel for Pray for Paris, which was an album. On my first
- 25:03impression, I was like, it's cool, and then I started to like
- 25:06it a little bit more as time went on. This is basically the sequel,
- 25:11similar artwork in some ways. It contains twenty one songs. It's about
- 25:18an hour and fifteen minutes in length on Griselda Records. Features obviously Conway,
- 25:25Benny, DJ Dramas, Stove Cooks, Rick Ross is on here, who
- 25:30else is on here? Tdd Dallas On, Danzel Curry at Rome Streets and
- 25:36on and on and on. Now, just so y'all know, when it
- 25:41comes to me and I'm giving my impressions not really a review, but more
- 25:45of my impressions of the album, but I guess you can call a review.
- 25:49I listened to it three times. The first listen it's sort of like
- 25:53my initial impressions. The second listen is to just listen deeper and make sure
- 25:57I understand what he was going for here, and the third listen is just
- 26:03to confirm my thoughts, and my thoughts, to save you a little bit
- 26:07of time, are that it's just okay and some respects it's kind of a
- 26:18disappointment, But the only thing that's disappointing to me about it, and I
- 26:22think this just goes for a couple of artists today is stop hyping things up
- 26:30to be the greatest thing ever created, just for people to be let down.
- 26:37Now, you may not think it'll be a letdown, but you're setting
- 26:41expectations so high that you're trying to doctrinate us, or maybe you're trying to
- 26:51hypnotize us and then have us walk out and like, yeah, it is
- 26:53the greatest album I've ever heard. It is not. It's not even the
- 26:57greatest Westside Gun album I've ever heard. Is it bad? I don't think
- 27:03so. I just think it's too many songs. I think there's some songs
- 27:08that are dope that I was like, Okay, this is crazy, and
- 27:12sometimes they'd be like back to back, and then there are other songs like
- 27:17did we really need that? Did we really need five trap six eight track
- 27:25records? Nah? Because they didn't really do anything, you know what I'm
- 27:30saying. So it was a lot of that. It was a lot of
- 27:33hit and miss, and there was a lot of redundancies and things. You
- 27:38heard songs he's kind of made before over and over again, like the song
- 27:44would tied Dallas on right. Let me just get the name, so I
- 27:47just get the song right, so you know it's called Chloe What side.
- 27:52Gun has probably made this type of song on every album he's released, and
- 27:57guess what happens. Always skip it. I always skip it. And maybe
- 28:04it's not for me. Maybe there's a reason why he makes this type of
- 28:08song, as maybe he goes and does this type of record at a show
- 28:12and the ladies go crazy, maybe the dudes even go crazy. But I
- 28:19just kind of feel like, how is this any different than the other one?
- 28:25Uh? And the same goes for some things and in a lot of
- 28:27ways, you know, maybe that's being a little harsh because this is this
- 28:33is how he raps, this is what he raps about. What else would
- 28:36I expect? You're right, but what I don't expect is for you to
- 28:41tell me is the greatest album of all time? And I think, and
- 28:47this is this is a plus for him. But I think he does an
- 28:52excellent job of building to the album with the video footage. You know,
- 28:56he always out of town, you know, he got the gear on and
- 29:00all that, and you get snippets of music and it really feels like something
- 29:03special. But I just feel like this album would have been better if he
- 29:08would have cut like half the songs and kept the strongest cuts and then like
- 29:15released like everybody else two three four weeks later released a deluxe version that adds
- 29:22some of these other records you take off, because I think if the initial
- 29:26impression is that, yo, this album is crazy, then you'd rather have
- 29:33that. And then you know, if there's a deluxe people would be like,
- 29:37oh, these joints is cool, but they're extra. They're not a
- 29:38part of the presentation. But when the album is kind of already bloated and
- 29:45it's hit or miss in the day in age I said this with the Drake
- 29:49album. In the day and age of being able to make your own playlists,
- 29:57it becomes very easy to look at an album that you do not like
- 30:02as a whole and just say, I'm gonna just throw those two joints on
- 30:06my playlist and never listen to that album ever. Again, That's what happens
- 30:11a lot, and it's kind of disappointing because for weeks, if not for
- 30:18months, where he's been building, I was this is probably one of my
- 30:22highly anticipated albums because I just kind of looked at it, like, you
- 30:27know, I know everything's coming out, but it's time for a West Side
- 30:32Gun type album. It's just too many songs, y'all. And you know,
- 30:37all the songs aren't that good. Like there's one song featured in Stove
- 30:42God where he does the hook, this redundant hook to me and a verse,
- 30:48and I really don't like it. And it just was frustrated because I
- 30:52started thinking about Dann, can we just get a Stove God Cook's album so
- 30:57we don't have to like hear them like this because now it's starting to become
- 31:02hit or miss. But then there's another record where he gets basically on that
- 31:04record and the beat his dope and Westside Gun versus Dope, and you're just
- 31:10like, man, maybe this should have been the only Stove God feature on
- 31:14this album. Right. But the problem is is, you know, it's
- 31:19a different age, right. I'm saying all this because I prefer shorter albums
- 31:25and a tighter experience as far as when you're listening to the album from beginning
- 31:30to end, right, But now we live in an age where people want
- 31:34you to dump forty five records on them so they can choose and pick and
- 31:40have a playlist, and had this experience that only lasts a week of listening
- 31:45and then they move on to the next thing. So will this be in
- 31:49my best of the year right now? No? But I will say this.
- 31:59I gave a similar review about Conways album that dropped this year. I
- 32:07always mix it up because it's a weird title like will he won't He?
- 32:10Or won't he Say? Or something like that. You know what I'm talking
- 32:13about that album, And I was like, man, this just didn't meet
- 32:17expectations. Blah blah blah. I said a lot of the same stuff.
- 32:21It was a shorter album, but I said a lot of the same stuff.
- 32:23And when I tell y'all, I listened to that album more and more
- 32:30as the year goes on. It could change my mind. I just doubt
- 32:36it will happen with this record because it's twenty one tracks and it's an hour
- 32:40and fifteen minutes, and there are some songs on there that are just what
- 32:45you know, how you see on the internet. On the Internet, of
- 32:50course, you see everything on the internet. People like parody Westside Gun,
- 32:57like make jokes about this type of stuff he would talk about and how he
- 33:00would do. There are certain songs where it don't even it sounds like a
- 33:05joke. It doesn't sound like something that's hot that he did. It sounds
- 33:09like he's in on the joke right, Like he's parody, Like he's a
- 33:15parody of himself on the record, because some of them are like really bad,
- 33:22like really bad, like you're going for something that you think is fly,
- 33:29but it's it's just not musically gratifying, let's just say, or satisfying.
- 33:37I don't know. It's been a long day. But nevertheless, I
- 33:40think if you're a West Side Gun fan, you should check it out.
- 33:44You know, you may or may not like it. If you're not a
- 33:47West Side Gun fan, This album will not make you a fan. We
- 33:52can give you all because he got a bunch of joints that are crazy.
- 33:57We can give you a list of those. And if you are curious,
- 34:02I say, why not? Why not listen to it? That's gonna do
- 34:07it for me. What do you think about Westside Guns brand new album?
- 34:12And then pray for me? What do you think about the BET Hip Hop
- 34:15Awards? Do you watch? I don't know. Did you like the tribute
- 34:20to Atlanta that happened? Well so so deaf? I think yeah, something
- 34:24like that happened. Leave your comments in a comment section below. And please

- 34:45but also that's how YouTube's algorithm says, Hey, people like this thing.
- 34:51They like it. They're commenting, so comment, like, share,
