Gas prices are soaring again—hitting a record high for late August at $4.06 a gallon—with diesel even worse, climbing toward $7 in some states. Blame it on global instability: Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries are disrupting supply, especially for diesel, which still powers over 7 million vehicles in the U.S.—more than all electric cars combined. Even with winter-blend gas on the horizon, underlying pressures won’t ease soon, leaving drivers bracing for higher costs as fall approaches.
