Transcript
- 0:23My name is Taylor Roberts. I am the guitar player for the band Tap
- 0:26Root. I am also the lead singer and guitar player for the band Riding
- 0:30with Killers, and we just released our debut record, We'll Circle, this
- 0:35past December and you can find it on every online outlet from Spotify to Apple
- 0:41Music and everywhere in between. And Hostility is on f M radio right now,
- 0:48So request that wherever you are, request hostility, please do it.
- 0:55Well, I'm gonna get off, I'm gonna request the finished that. Hell
- 1:00yeah, I love it. But because as you mentioned, my i'd like
- 1:04last year Riding with Killer's releasty debut album, Full Circle, so probably even
- 1:10named five six months now, sid has the reception being dude, it's it's
- 1:15been pretty good. Man. You know, we're we're we haven't. I
- 1:18don't feel like we've truly dug in yet, but with the things that we're
- 1:22doing, we're we're seeing an incredible response. You know, as I was
- 1:26saying, Hostility is at rock radio right now. And you know I'm not
- 1:30I'm not a rich guy. I don't have a record label, I don't
- 1:34have rich parents, I don't have rich friends that just throw money at me,
- 1:38But I essentially threw a pebble at rock radio with that song and the
- 1:44response we're seeing. You know, we have stations like will Rock and Chicago
- 1:49one to one, the Riff in Detroit one the radio, you know,
- 1:57picking up the single, and we're starting to make some d it moves around
- 2:00the charts, so you know, it's it's letting us know that we definitely
- 2:04have something real here and funny enough. Another song we had talked about doing
- 2:09as a single, Don't Fade Away, and even you know, the company
- 2:15I'm working with, they suggested that song too. We've started to see that
- 2:20song just rise recently, like like we went from like I don't know,
- 2:24like six thousand plays to twenty thousand plays within a matter of a couple of
- 2:29days. So people are finally starting to hear the music. I feel like
- 2:35it's starting to get out and make the rounds, and I think it's it's
- 2:38turning people's heads, you know, Like I feel like we're starting to finally
- 2:43get recognized and people are starting to be like, hey, who is this,
- 2:46you know, and it's paving a really good path for us to start
- 2:51getting on the road and hitting these places that are you know, showing us
- 2:53some love and really digging the material. All of those lines by You've been
- 3:00in the music industry for a while and you've seen all the changes coming go.
- 3:02So how do you actually gauge the success of a release in the modern
- 3:07As I back in the old days, it was pretty easy, But he
- 3:09says, there's so many different platforms. Yeah, I mean, I mean,
- 3:15obviously if you look at Spotify numbers and you see him climbing because I
- 3:19mean, I'm not paying for you know, plays or views or paying to
- 3:24get on on playlists or anything like that. So like when I start to
- 3:29see organic growth like that, and then you know the fact that we we
- 3:35headlined a city, We headlined Lansing, Michigan the other day, and you
- 3:40know, we we we've had the venue three fourths sold out, you know,
- 3:46like and we've never played there before, much less headlined and on a
- 3:51Sunday night. So like the fact that people are starting to come out the
- 3:53shows, and you know, we're getting just more interactions online and we're starting
- 4:00to see our t shirts out in the wild more and more. It just
- 4:04it's there's little things here there that are really you know, tall tale signs
- 4:11and you know, just interacting with fans, you know, with people that
- 4:14will randomly hit me up throughout the day and send me like the most amazing
- 4:17message, you know, saying how the music is you know, connected,
- 4:21or how they've connected to the music and how it's you know, relevant to
- 4:27their lives in whatever way it might be. So the fact that I know
- 4:30that this is starting to reach people, you know, it's it's it's it's
- 4:33moving slowly, but it's it's real, you know, And I would rather
- 4:39take that route at the end of the day, you know, and just
- 4:42that slow organic growth, but it is still growth, and you know,
- 4:46it doesn't seem to be slowing down. So tell us a bit about Full
- 4:50Circle from a musical point of view, and what are you gone for with
- 4:54the album? So for me, like Full Circle, that was me essentially
- 5:05perfecting a sound that I feel like I've been working on since I was a
- 5:11kid, Like just guitar wise, it's it's what I've always done, but
- 5:19it just it feels more mature. I also got to work with some of
- 5:25the most incredibly musicians. You know. Dave Coglan did all the drums and
- 5:30he's he's the drummer for Sponge, you know, Detroit local legends. He
- 5:34also played for tap Root, you know, he was their touring guy for
- 5:38a while, which just how we met. And then I got to work
- 5:41with Tim Krukowski, previously a Sponge and a phenomenal musician and a bass player.
- 5:46And then James Lascu did I would say about sixty or seventy percent of
- 5:51the bass on that record as well. So you know, I really got
- 5:56to step it up with the musicians that I was getting to record with and
- 6:01that I had in the studio with me to help get these ideas out and
- 6:06ultimately, you know, being around people that are as professional and badass as
- 6:13all three of those guys, like, I feel like it made me play
- 6:16better, made me play harder, and it also made me play smarter,
- 6:20you know, And I feel like musically and sonically, like compared to what
- 6:28my older projects were, I would say mature is the best word that I
- 6:32can use to describe it, because it just its like I finally have you
- 6:38know, some really just solid good songs that you know, aside from you
- 6:44know, the lyrics, musically, it's just it's fun. You mentioned that
- 6:48you just recently released Hostility Bright, but I did. It just shows the
- 6:54songs on the album that you still release the singles from it nearly six months
- 6:58after after releasing it. So is it more to como or is he's hostility
- 7:00wrapping up the cycles side of speak. So I would say we're still kind
- 7:09of riding the tail ends of the waves of hostility. But I am still
- 7:13planning on releasing more singles, especially with the response like I mentioned earlier,
- 7:17you know we're getting from Don't Fade Away, you know, so I definitely
- 7:23want to do something with that when it comes to rock radio. I'm about
- 7:28to release a lyric video for that song. I've got a music video for
- 7:31DNA that we're getting ready to release next month. So I mean, I
- 7:35still want even though the album's out and you know, the songs are out
- 7:41there, I still want each song that I believe in to have it's it's
- 7:46day if you will, you know what I mean, Like give it its
- 7:47own special thing. Like I still want to do music videos for probably two
- 7:54or three more songs on the record, And I feel like there's stuff that
- 7:59I can cantinue doing with these songs over the next twelve months if I really
- 8:03want to, and I probably will because again, like I said, I
- 8:05feel like each of these songs, you know, has their own story to
- 8:09tell, and you know, I'd be cutting myself short if i didn't try
- 8:15to turn it into visual art as well. So there's definitely more to come
- 8:18surrounding this entire record. And next year I'm looking to meet up with Ginny
- 8:24Nord when she comes over from Sweden. She was the female vocalist on in
- 8:31Silence, and we're definitely going to be shooting a music video together and we've
- 8:35talked about doing some live performances together, so I'm hoping that means that,
- 8:41you know, writing with Killers, will be doing some stuff with Rave the
- 8:43Requiem, really great band out of Sweden. So there's there's plenty more to
- 8:48come over over the next year for sure. And I've already completed the second
- 8:52record as well, so I've got that hanging out. You know, we're
- 8:58about to start the mixing cross us for that. I'm working on album art
- 9:01for that as well, So I mean there's there's plenty plenty down the line,
- 9:07and then of course you know with that, it'll be music videos,
- 9:09more lyric videos, and then you know, in the interim start working on
- 9:15getting the band on the road and you know, running towards more touring and
- 9:20and and getting out of our area. How would you say Full Circle difference
- 9:26musically to your debut EP get In, Well, for one, I I
- 9:35had a little more time in practice to become a singer, and I had
- 9:43a little more time of actually getting to write some lyrics and work with with
- 9:48some people that really helped me along the way. But you know, get
- 9:52In was that was my first attempt at being a singer because I was just
- 9:58like, all right, I'm gonna take shots in the dark and I'm gonna
- 10:01just whatever happens happens. And you know, with with Full Circle, I
- 10:07feel like that was me articulating my ideas and you know, expressing what was
- 10:16in my head and heart much better. You know. I I had been
- 10:20in the in front of the microphone a couple of times, you know,
- 10:24and I had a little bit more confidence, and I just uh, I
- 10:30also got to spend way more time on those songs too, So you know,
- 10:35again I'm gonna go back to mature. You know, I feel like
- 10:37it's just better songwriting and uh, you know, because because that was always
- 10:43my thing. Man is I can write you a guitar riff. I can
- 10:46write you, I can write you a song structure, but as far as
- 10:50being a vocalist and finding melodies and singing them and and and getting them out
- 10:58properly like it, it's taking. I'm still learning, you know, Like
- 11:01I'm in vocal lessons now and I'm working on just making my voice better.
- 11:07So I'm hoping that I can continue that that maturity through through my songwriting.
- 11:13But yeah, man, I I feel like I was just able to express
- 11:18myself a little bit better and I had more time to think on the songs.
- 11:24It's a lot of time. Like you sort of you weren't initially vitalist,
- 11:28but you've become one tod this. But have you found that having to
- 11:33sing and play at the same time is affected guitar playing it all? Like?
- 11:37It does it impact how you got about that? I mean it's I
- 11:43definitely approach guitar playing a lot differently to a degree, But at the same
- 11:50time, I still feel like I'm writing weird, intricate stuff like I was
- 11:56doing with my older bands. But I also didn't want to just regurgitate the
- 12:03same songs. But I mean, I do have to be conscious conscious of
- 12:09you know, you know, the fact that I'm singing and playing guitar at
- 12:13the same time. And but but I'm also to a point of where like
- 12:16if we if we track it, I'll learn it and I'll do it.
- 12:20So I don't think I'm limited by any means whatsoever. I do think that
- 12:26my style took a little bit of a left turn from my previous bands,
- 12:31but that was because I didn't want to be this band that was backed by
- 12:39like, you know, ten tracks of orchestra and whatnot, and that was
- 12:45what my old band was, I guess starting to go towards I wanted to
- 12:48be more of like a rock band like Alison Chains or you know Corn,
- 12:54you know, and yeah, they have a little bit of the E D
- 12:56M elements, but at the core of it, they're a rock band.
- 13:00And I would say that was why my guitar style change was. I just
- 13:05I wanted to be more of a guitar driven rock band. So and especially
- 13:13like with some of the newer material, like there's there's a lot of weird
- 13:16stuff that I'm gonna have to learn and you know, to sing and play.
- 13:20But I like the challenge. Man, It's it's fun, you know.
- 13:22It's not. And if it's if it's not easy, that means it's
- 13:26gonna be worthwhile at the end of it once I finally nail all of it.
- 13:30So yeah, yeah, I've got to ask Bry. Like with the
- 13:33band named writing Matilla's like, when you first started, you have anyone to
- 13:37show up to the show's expected a brutal death metal band because you didn't sound
- 13:43like a rock band, you know. That's actually I don't I've actually not
- 13:48had anyone tell me anything like that. But I think because of the bills
- 13:54that we've been on, like like the first show we actually did well.
- 14:00I mean the first time. The first show we did was for Sure Microphones.
- 14:03We we did a showcase with them, but like our first like live
- 14:07show after the pandemic was with seven Dust and Tremani, so we we kind
- 14:13of fit in that category and it worked, you know. But I I
- 14:18think it's it's one of those bands that, like, you know, over
- 14:24time, it'll just kind of be like, Okay, that that is the
- 14:26rock band riding with killers. But I haven't had anyone tell me they thought
- 14:31I was going to be a death metal band just yet. No, that's
- 14:33that's that's the first, that wasn't probably seven I fucking love seven Dust.
- 14:39Probably that would have been a great show, dude. It was awesome.
- 14:43Man. We had a great time with those guys, and Uh TREMANI.
- 14:48I love his solo stuff and and he's just the nicest dude ever. I
- 14:52mean, like, we were hanging out backstage and then he just walks up
- 14:56to us and starts like at twenty five in it long conversation and we're like,
- 15:01oh fuck, that's Mark Tremont. What And then the rest of his
- 15:05band walked up and just we started talking about guitars and gear and nerding out
- 15:11and it was just like wow, like you know, because I mean,
- 15:16dude, like, dude has what Platinum Records and and one of the a
- 15:22couple of the biggest bands in the world, and he just walks up and
- 15:24just starts hanging out. It was It was a very very good show.
- 15:30We had a great time with with both bands. Seven to Us Crew was
- 15:33awesome as always. Uh, And one of their guys even bought one of
- 15:37our shirts that that that was really cool. When we started seeing guys from
- 15:41that camp like grabbing armor and I was like, I'll give you one,
- 15:45and they're like, no, fuck that we're paying for it, and it
- 15:48was like that's awesome, so you know, it was it was it was
- 15:52a really cool, really cool time with those guys. We've done We've done
- 15:56quite a few cool shows, man, Like, like we we've only I
- 16:00think we're not even the ten shows just yet, but I mean, you
- 16:04know, we've done festivals with Three Doors Down see their Non Point club dates
- 16:11with ten Years, and quite a few others. Man. It's it's it's
- 16:17been a good start to this man for sure. Oh yeah, brother,
- 16:19Well, hopefully she keeps on going, mate. But in the meantime,
- 16:22the album Full Circle is out now and I listened before the interview. Man,
- 16:26I really really enjoyed. It's a good album. Bis. Hopefully we'll
- 16:29hear much more from me in the future. Absolutely, Chris Man, thank
- 16:33you so much for having me and I'm and for spending us and and uh
- 16:37and believing in what we do. Man, I really enjoyed hanging out and
- 16:41it's just just still to have a conversation with someone on the complete opposite side
- 16:45of the world. So just thank you very much for having me as a
- 16:47guest, brother, and hopefully we see sooner rather later. And we get
- 16:51to get Tomich of what we decided. Hey man, dude, I'm telling
- 16:56you, dude, if there is an avenue for me to come play Australia,
- 17:00I will. I will exhaust all my means to get there. So
- 17:03if there's a will, there's a way. So it's just it's just a
- 17:07matter of time at this point, mister Day that day to see the man.
- 17:22Now, it's a good out from you. Its small around him from
- 17:30so Calm Song said, Oh you mean it's for so small? I can
