- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is episode two hundred fifty. Luna: Hi everyone! I am Luna. We are halfway to three hundred episodes. That feels like a big milestone. Lucas: It really is. We have covered so much ground together. From greetings to body parts, from food to fashion. Luna: Yes. And today, we are moving into a very important area. Healthcare. Or at least, talking about being sick. Lucas: Exactly. It is a practical skill. You might need it when you travel or live here. So, let us start with the first phrase. Luna: Okay. What is the first thing you say when you feel unwell? Lucas: You say: Ik moet naar de dokter. I must go to the doctor. Luna: Ik moet naar de dokter. Let me try that again. Ik moet naar de dokter. Lucas: Perfect. Very clear. Now, imagine you are on the phone calling the clinic. What do you ask for? Luna: I need an appointment. Is that right? Lucas: Yes. The phrase is: Ik heb een afspraak nodig. I have an appointment needed. Luna: Ik heb een afspraak nodig. That sounds formal but polite. Lucas: It is. Politeness goes a long way in Dutch culture. Especially with service providers. Luna: So, if I call and say Ik heb een afspraak nodig, what does the receptionist ask me? Lucas: They will likely ask: Wat zijn uw symptomen? What are your symptoms? Luna: Wat zijn uw symptomen? Okay. So I need to be ready to answer that. Lucas: Right. Let us practice one common symptom. Headache. Luna: Headache in Dutch? Lucas: You say: Ik heb hoofdpijn. I have head pain. Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Oof. That hurts just saying it. Lucas: Well, hopefully not literally. But it is good to know. Luna: True. Let us repeat them all together quickly. Ik moet naar de dokter. Lucas: Good. Now: Ik heb een afspraak nodig. Luna: And: Wat zijn uw symptomen? Lucas: And finally: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Luna: Great. These are short but powerful phrases. Lucas: They are. Before we continue, I want to mention something about our community. Luna: Oh? What is on your mind, Lucas? Lucas: Well, learning a language can sometimes feel solitary. Like you are shouting into the void. Luna: Yeah. I know that feeling. Sometimes I wonder if anyone is actually listening. Lucas: But you are not alone. There is a whole group of people doing this with us. Luna: That is true. It feels more like a club than a class. Lucas: Exactly. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, consider supporting us. Luna: Supporting the show helps keep it ad-free and growing. It is a small way to say thanks. Lucas: If you want to join that support, you can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: It really makes a difference. Thank you for considering it. Lucas: No pressure at all. But if you can, we appreciate it. Now, back to the phrases. Luna: Right. Let us put these in a scene. I am calling the clinic. Lucas: Okay. You pick up the phone. Who are you calling? Luna: The general practitioner. I say: Ik moet naar de dokter. Lucas: Good start. The receptionist answers. What do you ask next? Luna: I say: Ik heb een afspraak nodig. I need an appointment. Lucas: Excellent. The receptionist asks: Wat zijn uw symptomen? Luna: Oh no. I forgot what to say. My head is spinning. Lucas: Just remember: Ik heb hoofdpijn. I have a headache. Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. Yes! Got it. The receptionist says okay, come in at ten. Lucas: See? You handled that perfectly. It is not so scary now. Luna: It is not. As long as I have my script. And my tea. Lucas: Tea is always a good idea. Especially if you have hoofdpijn. Luna: Right. Let us do one more quick repetition. For real this time. Lucas: Go ahead. Start with the need. Luna: Ik moet naar de dokter. I must go to the doctor. Lucas: Next. The request. Luna: Ik heb een afspraak nodig. I need an appointment. Lucas: Now the question from the staff. Luna: Wat zijn uw symptomen? What are your symptoms? Lucas: And the response. Luna: Ik heb hoofdpijn. I have a headache. Lucas: Wonderful. You are sounding very professional, Luna. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I feel like I could run a clinic. Or at least call one. Lucas: That is the goal. Practical skills for real life. Luna: Do we have any other symptoms we should know? Lucas: Maybe next time. Today we focused on the basics. The entry points. Luna: Okay. I am happy with those four phrases. Lucas: So am I. They are high value. High frequency. Luna: High frequency. I like that term. Sounds scientific. Lucas: It is. Language is data. And you are collecting good data. Luna: I love that perspective. It makes memorizing feel less like work. Lucas: Exactly. Keep collecting. Keep practicing. Luna: We will see you in the next episode. Bye for now! Lucas: Bye everyone. Take care of yourselves. And drink water.
