- 0:13Welcome back to Just Be True, a soul -led podcast.
- 0:17This podcast was born from the deep desire to
- 0:20live authentically, to strip away the mask, the
- 0:24expectations, the old stories and remember who
- 0:27you truly are. Each episode we explore what it
- 0:31means to live in harmony with your soul's truth
- 0:34through real conversations, intuitive guidance,
- 0:37and powerful moments of reflection. I am Summer
- 0:40and I am thrilled that you're here with me today.
- 0:44So today we're going to talk about something
- 0:46that touches every single one of us, yet we rarely
- 0:49slow down enough to truly honor it. And that's
- 0:53grief. Grief when love, life, and identity change.
- 0:58So not just a grief of losing someone that we
- 1:01love but the grief of losing a version of our
- 1:04life, a season, an identity, a dream, a role
- 1:09we once held. Grief isn't only about death, it's
- 1:14about change and sometimes it's about becoming
- 1:18someone new. So grief after losing someone There
- 1:26is a sacredness in grieving someone that you
- 1:30loved. When someone passes, whether suddenly
- 1:35or after a long goodbye, something shifts in
- 1:38the architecture of our world. Their voice no
- 1:42longer fills a room. Their laughter isn't heard
- 1:45on the other end of the phone. The holidays feel
- 1:48different, sometimes very empty. Ordinary days
- 1:53can feel like it's missing something. And what
- 1:58I've come to understand both personally and from
- 2:02holding space for others is that grief is love
- 2:07with nowhere to land. Love that is hitting a
- 2:11void that can't truly be explained other than
- 2:15the feeling of it. So this doesn't mean that
- 2:20you're broken. What it means it means that you
- 2:24love deeply. and honor this about you and be
- 2:29grateful that you had the ability to love and
- 2:32to love so deeply. You know, grief moves in waves.
- 2:39Some days are very manageable, but you're going
- 2:43to have other days where a soul, a smell, a memory
- 2:50is going to change you. They're gonna pull you
- 2:55under and you may feel like you're drowning But
- 2:59there is no timeline for grief There is no I
- 3:04should be over this by now There's no why am
- 3:08I sad it's already been a year Grief does not
- 3:12ask to be fixed it has to be felt and Sometimes
- 3:18the most healing thing that you can do is to
- 3:21sit with it not analyze it, not rush it, not
- 3:28distract yourself from it, and not spiritually
- 3:31bypass it, but to sit with it. Allow the emotions
- 3:40to arise. Allow the tears to fall. Allow the
- 3:46tightness in your chest to happen. Allow the
- 3:49anger. the confusion and the ache. This part
- 3:56is extremely important because grief is energy
- 4:00and emotion is energy in motion. So when you
- 4:05allow yourself to feel, I mean truly, truly feel,
- 4:11you allow that energy to move through you. It
- 4:16cups and waves, swells, it peaks and then it
- 4:20passes and when we try to bury it when we try
- 4:26to ignore it when we try to push it aside when
- 4:30we say I don't have time for this or you think
- 4:33that you need to be strong and hold yourself
- 4:35together or you may feel that you shouldn't feel
- 4:39a certain way you're interrupting the natural
- 4:43movement of that grief of that emotion that needs
- 4:47to move through you. Because what happens is
- 4:55if when you interrupt that and you don't allow
- 4:58it to move through you it gets stored. It settles
- 5:02in your body. It lingers in your nervous system.
- 5:07It shows up as heaviness, irritability, anxiety,
- 5:12numbness. That is when grief becomes stuck. And
- 5:19when grief is suppressed long enough, it doesn't
- 5:22disappear. It falls harder later. So sometimes
- 5:29through burnout, sometimes through illness or
- 5:32addictions, sometimes through emotional overwhelm
- 5:36that feels disappropriate in the moment. But
- 5:41it's not disappropriate. it'll be at that point
- 5:46you'll be trying to acclimate it and you'll try
- 5:50to normalize it but you have to allow yourself
- 5:55to feel and when you allow yourself to feel you
- 6:02are honoring the sacred intelligence of your
- 6:05body and your heart when you let grief move even
- 6:10if it's messy You are telling your system it
- 6:15is safe to release And release creates space
- 6:21space to breathe Space for peace and space for
- 6:27new life to enter So feeling it fully is how
- 6:34you move through it. It's not meant to be easy
- 6:37It's meant to be powerful is meant to be life
- 6:42-changing and healing. I mean I've certainly
- 6:47lost loved ones throughout my lifetime and what
- 6:51surprises me the most about my grief was not
- 6:56that the pain of their absence but the clarity
- 6:59of their impact. In the quiet after they're gone
- 7:06I began to see how deeply they shaped me. The
- 7:11things that they taught me, the ways that they
- 7:14loved me, the subtle ways they influenced who
- 7:18I became. It was almost if that grief illuminated
- 7:24the imprint that they left behind. At first the
- 7:29loss felt very overwhelming, heavy and consuming,
- 7:33and there were moments where I felt like I couldn't
- 7:37breathe. or that life would never be the same
- 7:40again and life's not going to be the same again
- 7:44because we've lost and through that loss we've
- 7:48changed and we've became something new but what
- 7:54I also noticed and this took time was that once
- 7:59the sharp edges of the grief softened something
- 8:03else emerged and it was their presence not in
- 8:09a dramatic way, not in a way that replaced the
- 8:13physical absence, but in a quiet, steady way,
- 8:18a sense of connection, a warmth, a knowing. It
- 8:25was as if once the storm of emotions moved through
- 8:29me, I could feel them differently, not gone,
- 8:36but integrated. not outside of me, but woven
- 8:41within me. And that shift, that being able to
- 8:47acknowledge their presence, that only happens
- 8:51because I allow myself to feel the grief fully.
- 8:56And when the waves settle, what remained was
- 8:59the love that I still had for them. And that
- 9:03love never disappears. And in fact, That love
- 9:09that you have for them can continue to grow stronger
- 9:13even though they're on the other side. It doesn't
- 9:17end. It just transforms and it changes. So I
- 9:27empower you if you're going if you're grieving
- 9:30for the loss of someone I empower you to take
- 9:36all the time that you need to fully allow that
- 9:40grief to move through you and to let go so that
- 9:43you can experience life after and experience
- 9:49the change that it creates and the wonder and
- 9:52the power within yourself that comes alive. So
- 9:59the next thing that we're gonna talk about is
- 10:02grief for life transitions. It's a whole other
- 10:06type of grief but one that we can still resonate
- 10:09with. So it's the kind that doesn't come from
- 10:13the loss of a person or from the loss of a chapter.
- 10:17This is the grief of change. Leaving a career
- 10:20that defines you, stepping away from a role you
- 10:24carry for years, outgrowing a life you once worked
- 10:28so hard to build. This kind of grief can feel
- 10:33disoriented because on the outside everything
- 10:37looks perfectly fine There may not be a visible
- 10:42tragedy In fact, there may even be forward movement
- 10:47happening expansion and opportunities that you're
- 10:49taking advantage of Maybe it was even your choice
- 10:53for these changes to happen or they were necessary
- 10:57or maybe you're even becoming more aligned with
- 11:00where you're at where you're supposed to be but
- 11:03yet there's an underlying underlying sadness
- 11:09to it all. Now I can say this personally there
- 11:15are moments when I miss what I once was the structure
- 11:19the familiarity the identity that came with it
- 11:24and there are days when I feel nostalgic nostalgic
- 11:27for the version of my life that felt known and
- 11:32steady but at the same time I know deeply that
- 11:38what is being created now is way more in alignment
- 11:44with who I'm supposed to be I'm more fulfilled
- 11:47and more expansive I'm more prosperous in many
- 11:52ways and that goes way beyond a title or a paycheck.
- 11:59But both can be true. You're not grieving the
- 12:04pain, you're grieving the familiarity. The nervous
- 12:11system attaches to what it knows even if what
- 12:16it knows wasn't fully aligned or that it was
- 12:21very predictable. It had shape, it had rhythm,
- 12:26and it was comfort. So when you choose growth
- 12:32or when growth chooses you, because many times
- 12:36that's how it happens too, right? There is often
- 12:40a threshold of space, a limited or a space of
- 12:47in between where the old is gone but the new
- 12:50hasn't fully formed yet. Right, so you're kind
- 12:54of in this in between kind of weird space, right?
- 12:59But in that space your heart may whisper, I know
- 13:03this is right, but I miss what was. That doesn't
- 13:09mean you made the wrong decision. It means that
- 13:12you're integrating. It means that you're getting
- 13:15used to what's to become. This is where transitions
- 13:19are taking form and transitions are very layered.
- 13:25You can feel gratitude and grief at the same
- 13:27time, relief and longing, excitement and uncertainty.
- 13:32You can feel all of those at once. But these
- 13:35are not weaknesses. This is expansion. And honoring
- 13:39the complexity part of the moving through it
- 13:43with grace and being open to that and being honest
- 13:48with yourself as you're going through these emotions.
- 13:51They're perfectly normal, there's no judgment
- 13:55in them and allow those emotions to come up and
- 13:59work through them. Find someone to talk to and
- 14:03work through them. So the third part And this
- 14:09one might be the quietest grief of them all.
- 14:13The grief of the person you used to be. Not the
- 14:19version that died. Not the version that carried
- 14:23you. The one who survived. The one who hustled.
- 14:28The one who stayed small in safe spaces. The
- 14:33one who held everything together and carried
- 14:36everyone else. As you step into awakening as
- 14:42you heal and you evolve you begin to shed identities
- 14:47and even when those identities are heavy when
- 14:53they that were familiar they gave you structure
- 14:57they gave you purpose they gave you a way of
- 15:01understanding yourself and I see this often especially
- 15:06in moms You know, there is a profound grief that
- 15:12can rise when our children begin to grow independently.
- 15:19When they don't need you the same way. When they
- 15:23stop reaching for your hand. When your role shifts
- 15:27from constant caregiver to quiet supporter. And
- 15:32it can feel like you're no longer needed the
- 15:36same way that you were. and you may be asked
- 15:39well you know I used to do all of these things
- 15:41who am I now and that question can ache you know
- 15:48because motherhood especially hands -on motherhood
- 15:52becomes intertwined with our identity it becomes
- 15:56rhythm it becomes a mission and it becomes proof
- 16:00of value so when that season changes It can feel
- 16:07like something inside of you is dissolving, but
- 16:11what's dissolving is not your worth, it's your
- 16:14role. There can be grief in no longer being the
- 16:22fixer, the strong one, the rescuer, the overachiever,
- 16:27the constant caregiver, the one who never needed
- 16:31help because of you are no longer that then what
- 16:38are you? When you step into who you're supposed
- 16:47to be start owning your own becoming you are
- 16:54asked to release identities that once identified
- 16:57you that once defined you and letting go even
- 17:02when it's growth It carries loss. But here's
- 17:08the reframe. A different way to look at it. You're
- 17:12not losing yourself. You're expanding beyond
- 17:16that single role. You're meeting the version
- 17:22of you that exists outside of being needed and
- 17:26discovering that you are worthy even when you
- 17:29are not required to be. and that kind of becoming
- 17:36can feel very destabilizing but at the same time
- 17:43it is deeply freeing because you are stepping
- 17:48into a space of learning who you are again you're
- 17:53no longer The mom who took everything on that
- 17:58drove everybody to soccer practice or to PTA
- 18:02meetings or you know to go see their friends
- 18:05You're being able to discover what keeps you
- 18:09that brings excitement and joy to you that makes
- 18:12you feel alive And that is amazing So, you know,
- 18:27grief isn't something to rush through, but something
- 18:32to walk with. Not something to conquer, not something
- 18:37to get over, but something that reshapes you
- 18:42quietly from the inside. Grief will slow you
- 18:47down. It softens the sharp edges that we carry
- 18:53It strips away what is performative and returns
- 18:56you to what is real. And when you allow it and
- 19:02truly allow it, grief becomes a threshold. It
- 19:09can humble you. It deepens your compassion. It
- 19:15expands your capacity to hold complexity in yourself
- 19:20and in others. It teaches you that strength is
- 19:26not suppressive. That love does not disappear.
- 19:36That identity can evolve without you losing your
- 19:40essence. Grief reminds you that life is fragile
- 19:45and sacred. And in many ways Grief is proof that
- 19:51you lived, that you loved, that you risked attachment,
- 19:58that you allowed yourself to care deeply, and
- 20:01that you dared to change, even when change cost
- 20:05you something. Grief is not the opposite of growth,
- 20:12often it's the doorway to it. Now if you're grieving
- 20:22right now, whether it's over a person, a season,
- 20:27a role, or a former version of yourself, I want
- 20:32to offer you this. You are not behind. You are
- 20:37not failing. And most importantly, you are not
- 20:41weak. You are in transition. and transition even
- 20:48when it feels disoriented is very sacred. You
- 20:53are in the space between what was and what is
- 20:58becoming. That space can feel tender, it can
- 21:03feel uncertain, and it can feel like standing
- 21:06in an unfamiliar light. But nothing about this
- 21:11means that you're doing it wrong. So let yourself
- 21:16cry when the waves come up, when those emotions
- 21:20come up. Let yourself rest when your body needs
- 21:24stillness. Let yourself remember without rushing
- 21:30to move on. And let yourself evolve without apology.
- 21:38Grief and growth often walk hand in hand. The
- 21:45very thing that aches is also the place where
- 21:49something new is forming. And you don't have
- 21:54to force the becoming, you only have to allow
- 21:57it. So if you are moving through grief right
- 22:05now, I want to offer just a few gentle supports,
- 22:09not to fix, but to help you walk with it. So
- 22:15first thing I would say is journal, giving the
- 22:18grief a voice. So sometimes grief just wants
- 22:22to be witnessed. So try writing about it without
- 22:27censoring. Write a letter to the person that
- 22:31you lost. Write to the version of yourself that
- 22:35you released. Write about what you miss the most.
- 22:40Write about what you're afraid of. Write about
- 22:44what is happening, what is your beginning starting
- 22:47to look like. You don't have to be poetic, you
- 22:52just have to be honest. And when emotions move
- 22:57from the inside of your body onto paper, it creates
- 23:00space. And it's allowing that emotion to be in
- 23:09motion. So there are some prompts that you can
- 23:13use to help with this like what did this person
- 23:17teach me or what did the season teach me? What
- 23:24part of me feels most tender right now? What
- 23:29am I afraid I will never be the same? And then
- 23:37what is quietly trying to emerge? So these are
- 23:41great prompts. The second thing I would like
- 23:46to do is like tell you to share your story. Grief
- 23:50softens in safe spaces. So isolation intensifies
- 23:55the grief whether so I'm going to say whether
- 23:58it's a trusted friend, a therapist, a spiritual
- 24:02mentor, a support group. Speaking your story
- 24:06out loud allows your nervous system to feel witnessed
- 24:10and there is something profoundly healing about
- 24:17someone saying that makes sense or it's okay
- 24:21for you to feel that way. You don't have to carry
- 24:25this along. So please find someone or a group
- 24:33that you can share with. The third thing I would
- 24:40say is allow ritual. So you can light a candle,
- 24:46visit a meaningful place, create a small personal
- 24:51ceremony to honor what what was. Rituals give
- 24:55the heart a container for transition. So create
- 25:00your own ritual that works best for you and your
- 25:04memories. The fourth thing I would say is tend
- 25:10to your body. Grief is not just emotional, it's
- 25:15psychological. So walk, breathe deeply, practice
- 25:21yoga or Tai Chi, something that brings in movement.
- 25:29And there can be times like when you're having
- 25:30a really hard time, just place your hand on your
- 25:32chest. When the waves come up and let your body
- 25:38move that energy Rather than bracing against
- 25:43it whether than trying to shove it down or forget
- 25:46about it Be gentle with yourself offer yourself
- 25:51gratitude offer yourself graciousness and patience
- 25:55And allow it And the last thing that I would
- 26:08like to offer in this is give yourself permission
- 26:11to feel joy again. And this one surprises a lot
- 26:15of people. But sometimes we unconsciously hold
- 26:21onto grief because joy can feel disloyal. Smiling
- 26:26feels wrong. Laughter feels like betrayal. But
- 26:30moving forward can feel like leaving something
- 26:33or someone behind. But allowing yourself moments
- 26:38of light does not diminish your love. In fact,
- 26:42it actually honors it. And if you pause for a
- 26:47moment, and if you think about the person or
- 26:50the season that you're grieving, will they truly
- 26:53want you to stay small, stay dim, and live half
- 26:58-heartedly? Of course not. They're gonna want
- 27:03you to get out there and enjoy life and Thrive
- 27:07and find laughter and hope and joy again in your
- 27:10day The love you share was never meant to be
- 27:16kicked to cage you in sorrow The lessons the
- 27:20memories the imprint that left in your life All
- 27:24of those are meant to expand you not shrink you
- 27:28So choosing joy again is not forgetting It's
- 27:34carrying their impact forward It's living in
- 27:38the way that reflects what they gave you and
- 27:42It is allowing love to evolve from memory into
- 27:47embodiment You are allowed to heal You are allowed
- 27:54to continue living and you are allowed to expand
- 27:59even after loss and in many ways this is how
- 28:06you honor what has been lost staying buried in
- 28:11grief does not prove your love living fully following
- 28:18your dreams and remembering with an open heart
- 28:25that is what honors that love. That is what honors
- 28:33that loss. So as always thank you for being here.
- 28:47Thank you for being willing to feel deeply. Thank
- 28:51you for allowing yourself to sit with this. and
- 28:55thank you for choosing the soul -led path and
- 29:00when that path asks you to grow through change
