- 0:08Speaker 1: We're back. It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of
- 0:11Speaker 1: Fame broadcaster and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 0:21Speaker 2: All right, continuing here on this Longhorns Monday, Let's get
- 0:25Speaker 2: back to some of the comments from Longhorns head coach
- 0:28Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian from the weekly news conference, and let's go
- 0:34Speaker 2: right to this. This ten toes down quote you've got
- 0:37Speaker 2: you got this here, cam.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yes, so Steve Sarkisian posted on his Instagram story Steve
- 0:43Speaker 3: dot Sarkisian. For those who do not follow coach, it's
- 0:46Speaker 3: a Nipsey Hustle quote. Craig who is a former rapper.
- 0:50Speaker 3: He's passed away, but he's from from the West Coast,
- 0:52Speaker 3: so you know, obviously sark a West Coast guy. You know,
- 0:55Speaker 3: he talked about his affinity for Tupac and Nipsey Hustle
- 0:59Speaker 3: in the ask. But the quote is the game will
- 1:02Speaker 3: test you, never fold, stay ten toes down. It's not
- 1:06Speaker 3: on you, it's in you, and what's in you they
- 1:09Speaker 3: can never take away. Hashtag tough all day. Yeah, okay,
- 1:14Speaker 3: good quote. Yeah, no doubt about that. Okay, So he
- 1:18Speaker 3: was asked about it. I guess it was our friend.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Corey Mos from KU asked him about that ten toes
- 1:22Speaker 2: down thing and Nipsey Hustle and is he a fan
- 1:24Speaker 2: of that and how it applies to his team.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think in the end, like there's
- 1:28Speaker 4: a life of a competitor, and when you're a competitor,
- 1:33Speaker 4: you know, as much as we love the wins, we
- 1:36Speaker 4: have to learn and endure the losses. And but but
- 1:39Speaker 4: what's in you is in you. And we've got a
- 1:41Speaker 4: bunch of great competitors in our locker room. We've got
- 1:43Speaker 4: a bunch of great competitors on our staff. So we need,
- 1:46Speaker 4: we do need to stay ten toes down and we
- 1:48Speaker 4: need to get back to work and we're a really
- 1:50Speaker 4: good football team. We just got to get back to
- 1:52Speaker 4: playing our brand, our style of.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Football all right now. He was asked about third and
- 1:56Speaker 2: long versus third and medium because long Ward's had trouble
- 1:59Speaker 2: try to convert on third down and the third and
- 2:03Speaker 2: longs were more difficult than the third media, but there
- 2:04Speaker 2: were some third and mediums they just flat out didn't convert,
- 2:07Speaker 2: and so he was asked to explain, you know, the
- 2:09Speaker 2: difficulty level and dealing with third and long versus third medium.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Honestly, I don't mind third medium, you know, third and
- 2:15Speaker 4: third and four to six, that's that's a decent sweet
- 2:18Speaker 4: spot for us. You know, I just didn't love our
- 2:24Speaker 4: execution in some of those situations. You know, I didn't
- 2:28Speaker 4: didn't love the timing with the routes with the quarterback.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I didn't love some of the protection that we had
- 2:33Speaker 4: for the quarterback. I didn't love some of the decision
- 2:35Speaker 4: making by the quarter So it was all kind of
- 2:36Speaker 4: everybody kind of took their turns in those situations. Now, granted,
- 2:40Speaker 4: I would like to run the football better than we
- 2:42Speaker 4: did the other night. Again, it got away from us
- 2:45Speaker 4: a little bit there as the game started to stretch
- 2:47Speaker 4: and the leads started to stretch, and we got a
- 2:49Speaker 4: little bit one dimensional, and we tried to kind of
- 2:53Speaker 4: use the run game as an offset to the past game.
- 2:56Speaker 4: But ideally we have balance, and that balance usually at
- 3:00Speaker 4: the end of the game. What does it look like
- 3:02Speaker 4: from a balance standpoint, And I think so many people
- 3:04Speaker 4: think balance is you're balanced all game long. You know,
- 3:08Speaker 4: I've done a lot of a lot of my time
- 3:11Speaker 4: as studying some of the best play callers in the sport,
- 3:13Speaker 4: and Bill Walsh to me is an icon of play calling.
- 3:16Speaker 4: And if you ever watch those old forty nine er
- 3:18Speaker 4: teams with with you know Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, John Taylor,
- 3:22Speaker 4: Roger Craig, Tom Rathman, a lot of times they came
- 3:25Speaker 4: to throw and then that led to the run. And
- 3:27Speaker 4: every game was a little bit different, and we try
- 3:29Speaker 4: to do what's in our best interest to attack a team.
- 3:32Speaker 4: But we just didn't get enough balance the other night
- 3:35Speaker 4: at the end of the game. But I think a
- 3:37Speaker 4: lot of that was a byproduct of the turnovers and
- 3:39Speaker 4: the score going the way that it did. But we
- 3:42Speaker 4: need to extend drives and and two of fifteen obviously
- 3:45Speaker 4: is unacceptable, especially for the standard around here, and so
- 3:48Speaker 4: we've got to find ways to convert those makeable third downs.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Third and six or less we should be hitting that
- 3:53Speaker 4: at a really high rate. Third and seven plus, I
- 3:55Speaker 4: get it is difficult, but six or less we should
- 3:58Speaker 4: be converting those at a high rate.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:00Speaker 2: He was then asked the long words went back to
- 4:02Speaker 2: the practice field this morning. They meet on Monday mornings.
- 4:05Speaker 2: He has what he's called is Good, Bad, and Ugly
- 4:08Speaker 2: film review. He picks out about twenty plays, good ones,
- 4:13Speaker 2: bad ones, and really ugly ones, and so he does that.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Then they go to the practice field and they had
- 4:18Speaker 2: practice this morning inside the stadium. So then he was
- 4:22Speaker 2: asked what is the emphasis that he and his coaching
- 4:25Speaker 2: staff trying to get across to the players in practice
- 4:27Speaker 2: this week.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Well, getting back to our standard, getting back to what
- 4:30Speaker 4: we believe in, and getting back to who we are.
- 4:32Speaker 4: You know, I think I didn't go into the team
- 4:34Speaker 4: meeting this morning pointing the finger at one person or
- 4:38Speaker 4: one thing. I made it a point today in our good, bad,
- 4:41Speaker 4: and ugly to really touch on just about every position
- 4:43Speaker 4: group of where they can improve. And I think that's
- 4:46Speaker 4: the mindset that we have to have. Everybody's got to
- 4:49Speaker 4: go out and improve this week. Everybody's got to get
- 4:51Speaker 4: back to, you know, playing our brand, our standard of football.
- 4:56Speaker 4: And I think that's the message, right, It's not about Hey,
- 4:58Speaker 4: just this one thing, he's get fixed and we're gonna
- 5:01Speaker 4: be okay. We've all got to improve, coaches included, and
- 5:04Speaker 4: so that that's really been the message, all right.
- 5:06Speaker 2: So then he was asked for a review of his
- 5:08Speaker 2: offensive line play because it was kind of a mixture.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You're a lot of really bad reviews. And then there
- 5:14Speaker 2: were other reviews that came out said, really, wasn't that
- 5:17Speaker 2: that bad overall? There were bad moments, circumstances certainly on place.
- 5:22Speaker 2: So he was asked for a review what he saw
- 5:24Speaker 2: from his oat line.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it was kind of a few different
- 5:28Speaker 4: things happened. You know, the first sack, not the first sack,
- 5:33Speaker 4: but the sack fumble on the corner blitz was a
- 5:36Speaker 4: communication era at the line of scrimmage. Quinn thought he
- 5:39Speaker 4: was protected on the backside. Clearly he wasn't. So for
- 5:42Speaker 4: all the all the Monday morning quarterbacks who said Quinn
- 5:45Speaker 4: was late with the ball, that was incorrect. All right,
- 5:47Speaker 4: he thought he was protected and he wasn't. Okay, we
- 5:51Speaker 4: have another one where we don't block the Mike linebacker
- 5:54Speaker 4: coming off the edge. That was a running back issue.
- 5:57Speaker 4: We have another one where a running back gets ran
- 5:59Speaker 4: over through the gap and we all want Quinn to
- 6:01Speaker 4: step up, but the running backs on his back, he
- 6:03Speaker 4: can't step up, and then Kelvin ends up giving up
- 6:05Speaker 4: some pressure. We have another one where Cam loses his
- 6:08Speaker 4: you know, kind of fundamental technique and gets wiped and
- 6:11Speaker 4: we give up a sack there. So it was kind
- 6:13Speaker 4: of a variety of things. And that's my point. It's
- 6:16Speaker 4: it's not this one. Hey, this guy just got his
- 6:19Speaker 4: butt kicked. That's not really what happened. There was a
- 6:21Speaker 4: we dropped back forty some odd times in the game, right,
- 6:24Speaker 4: And so one guy, when you play tackle, you may
- 6:27Speaker 4: have forty four really good reps, but those two you
- 6:29Speaker 4: got beat on, right, can rear the ugly head. And
- 6:32Speaker 4: that's the life of being a tackle. That's a life
- 6:34Speaker 4: of being a dB. You can play great all game
- 6:36Speaker 4: and give up one deep ball. And boy, he didn't
- 6:39Speaker 4: have a great game. And so we've got to find
- 6:41Speaker 4: a level of consistency. We've got to find a level
- 6:43Speaker 4: of balance. And then we need to play as a
- 6:46Speaker 4: cohesive unit on the offensive side of the ball, and
- 6:48Speaker 4: that starts up front for us.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Okay, all right. Then he was asked about Trey Moore's
- 6:54Speaker 2: presence on the defensive front. He rotates in, but he
- 6:58Speaker 2: does lead the defensive and snaps taken all along and
- 7:02Speaker 2: how all that works out.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Yeah, he treys a really versatile guy. We asked him
- 7:06Speaker 4: to do a lot. He's a very smart player. He's
- 7:09Speaker 4: been really active in the run game. I thought he
- 7:11Speaker 4: had some really nice Rushes the other night, just didn't
- 7:14Speaker 4: quite get home the step ups and then maybe forced
- 7:17Speaker 4: an errant throw, maybe got another guy to get a
- 7:19Speaker 4: hit on a quarterback. So again, his versatility is beneficial
- 7:23Speaker 4: to us. I think his motor is beneficial to us.
- 7:27Speaker 4: And then, you know, I think again, you know, the
- 7:29Speaker 4: idea that he can be an every down player for us,
- 7:32Speaker 4: that he can defend the run on first and second
- 7:34Speaker 4: down but also be effective on third down has been helpful.
- 7:37Speaker 2: All right. So after invariably after loss is like this,
- 7:41Speaker 2: coaches are going to be asked about leadership. Leadership from
- 7:43Speaker 2: the coaching sta have leadership from the players. And Sark
- 7:47Speaker 2: was asked about that leadership thing. How much does he
- 7:50Speaker 2: have to take on? Sark had a pretty interesting response
- 7:52Speaker 2: about all this.
- 7:53Speaker 4: You know, I liked our leadership in the locker room.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Even before I went in there to speak, I could
- 7:58Speaker 4: hear a few of our leaders speaking up. And the
- 8:01Speaker 4: beauty of that statement I just made was a few
- 8:04Speaker 4: A few years ago I might have had one, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 4: And now I've got a few guys speaking up and
- 8:08Speaker 4: really speaking our language and believing in what we believe in.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I think one thing that I was proud of our
- 8:14Speaker 4: guys today. They were all coachable. A lot of the
- 8:17Speaker 4: times after a tough loss, you know, pride can get
- 8:22Speaker 4: in the way from getting coached, and I didn't feel
- 8:25Speaker 4: that today. I felt a lot of guys wanting to
- 8:27Speaker 4: get better, wanting to get coached. Where can I improve?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Uh?
- 8:30Speaker 4: And then they came out with a good spirit about
- 8:31Speaker 4: them today, And naturally there's a bad taste in our mouth. Naturally,
- 8:36Speaker 4: you know, we're a prideful group. We want to play
- 8:39Speaker 4: better than we did. I do think we have a
- 8:41Speaker 4: lot to prove and I think we've got a chip
- 8:43Speaker 4: on his shoulder and that and that, and again there's
- 8:45Speaker 4: nothing wrong with that. I think that's a good thing.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I've always been a guy that has thrived when I
- 8:49Speaker 4: have something to prove to somebody. And again, I think
- 8:52Speaker 4: that our team has taken on that personality as well.
- 8:55Speaker 2: All right, So that he was asked also about how
- 8:57Speaker 2: he bounces back after lost, how his team can what
- 9:00Speaker 2: they have to do to flip this.
- 9:02Speaker 4: It's it's relatively similar situation in that you know, every
- 9:06Speaker 4: week's a championship game. Now, you know, it is similar
- 9:09Speaker 4: to last year in the Big Twelve with with no divisions,
- 9:14Speaker 4: now we come into the SEC, there's no divisions again,
- 9:17Speaker 4: and so a lot of the teams that are at
- 9:20Speaker 4: or near the top of our conference standings right now
- 9:22Speaker 4: we don't play. Some of them we do, but a
- 9:25Speaker 4: lot of them that we don't, and so we have
- 9:27Speaker 4: to really make sure that we take care of our
- 9:29Speaker 4: business one week at a time. We can't just point
- 9:31Speaker 4: to one or two games say if we win that one,
- 9:33Speaker 4: we're gonna be okay. And so it really feels like
- 9:36Speaker 4: from here on out we're kind of in an SEC
- 9:38Speaker 4: championship game. And that's the same mentality we had last
- 9:41Speaker 4: year in the Big Twelve, that every game matters to
- 9:46Speaker 4: that degree, and we have to put ourselves in Atlanta
- 9:48Speaker 4: right if that's what we want to be, We have
- 9:50Speaker 4: to put ourselves there every Saturday, that that's what we're
- 9:52Speaker 4: competing for.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:54Speaker 2: So there's more from logrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. We'll
- 9:57Speaker 2: hear more from start coming up next. How we're gonna
- 9:59Speaker 2: get some NFL notes up next when we continue on
- 10:02Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
