- 0:32Hi, everyone.
- 0:32Welcome back to the realtor who whines.
- 0:34I'm Rachelle Neumeyer, the realtor who wins.
- 0:36And today I'm with Katie Kern.
- 0:38And we are in this beautiful venue.
- 0:40And this is technically a West Linn address or Wilsonville, okay.
- 0:44We're in West Linn, Oregon, just on the cusp of where Wilsonville Muslin meets.
- 0:48So some people would probably think of it as Wilsonville.
- 0:51I think because, yeah, I think we're like, we're not we're kind of in like the trifecta, almost trifecta of like quality in Wilsonville, West Linn.
- 1:01Yeah.
- 1:01Well, like if you live on this road, you go to Wilsonville schools.
- 1:05I think you can go to either.
- 1:06Really, I think so.
- 1:07Well, it doesn't matter.
- 1:08No, that's not why we're here today anyhow.
- 1:11Property line.
- 1:12We'll talk about school district's zoning later.
- 1:15Yeah, but thank you for being on.
- 1:18I'd like to cheers you.
- 1:20I appreciate you having us here today.
- 1:22Of course. Happy to have you guys.
- 1:25We are.
- 1:26For those wondering what we're drinking today, we are drinking rosé, from the Jackson vineyard, which is provided by the Sherwood Hills Winery.
- 1:36I was just telling Katie she hasn't been to this winery yet.
- 1:38We both live in Sherwood and she loves rosé, so I thought it was a fitting wine to bring.
- 1:42But this is like a hobby winery.
- 1:45They're open by appointment only.
- 1:47They, like, have a vineyard on property, and then they, like, turn their garage into a tasting room.
- 1:50But it's like a nice separate garage.
- 1:53It's really cool.
- 1:54And they have like an outdoor seating, some delicious.
- 1:56We'll have to check it out sometime together.
- 1:58Got done rosé all day.
- 2:00Yeah.
- 2:00So now we've talked property lines rosé all day.
- 2:03Why don't we actually talk about you?
- 2:03Wouldn't that be great if that's a I don't think we have enough time for.
- 2:09Yes, well, we'll do our best. Okay.
- 2:11Can you go ahead and introduce yourself to everybody and give us just a brief introduction of who you are and what you do?
- 2:17Oh, man.
- 2:18You know.
- 2:18Okay, grab a pencil. Right.
- 2:18So I'm Katie Kern.
- 2:21I currently own and operate, wedding planning at our wedding, an event planning business called Portland Event and Design.
- 2:29I currently manage this venue, which is Chateau de harp.
- 2:32Along with, like, planning events.
- 2:35So when they book, when clients book their event here, I do all the management and like, event planning and all of that.
- 2:42Here.
- 2:43And then I co-own Portland Catering Company, which we're a full service catering company in Portland about with servant servicing the Portland metro area.
- 2:51So I've been in catering for about 22 years.
- 2:55I've owned my business since 2012.
- 2:58Planning events.
- 3:00And then I manage a couple other venues as well.
- 3:02And then I'm a mom. Yeah.
- 3:04Do you a mom, a coach? Yep, I do.
- 3:06You were in charge of the PTA?
- 3:09Well, I was on Pac. Sorry.
- 3:10I'm sorry, I know I gotta say it the right way.
- 3:14Sorry. Parent advisory committee.
- 3:17She advises.
- 3:19Yeah, I just do all the things.
- 3:21Yeah? Yeah. You wear a lot of hats.
- 3:23What have you always had an entrepreneurial spirit, like as a kid, or is that something that kind of bit you later in life?
- 3:29I think more so my parents really instilled like you work hard, play hard situation.
- 3:36And that was never an option for us to like, not be busy and not have things on our plate.
- 3:41So I think sometimes I have a platter full instead of a plateful.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:46But in my like in my life, that's just how I operate, because that's just how I've been my entire life.
- 3:53So whether it was like doing a project at home and growing up and, and like working a job, or when I was in college, I worked several jobs just to kind of like keep busy and like, keep going.
- 4:05And then I think that mentality just, like, helps you grow and helps you build to whatever you're doing.
- 4:10So yeah, that's just kind of what I've always been like, I don't know, I'm what was like your first, like, solo entrepreneurial endeavor.
- 4:20Like you were saying, you're doing projects at home and stuff, but, like, as you're growing up, like, well, was like one of your very first, like, solo things that you did solo.
- 4:27So I think what really made me start is when I was my first job was catering.
- 4:32So that's why I've been in catering for so long.
- 4:35And so that company I worked with when I was in high school, I got promoted to lead super quickly.
- 4:42So I was a 16 year old with my license driving, catering van, running events like.
- 4:47Yeah, in charge of people that were super, not super old, but like much older than a 16 year old.
- 4:53Yeah, yeah.
- 4:54So you were in charge of grown ups.
- 4:56I got that little taste of like, management, so to speak, and like, knowing that I could do it and I was doing it successfully.
- 5:02So I think that's just kind of where I started that itch of like, doing better, doing more.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:09And like succeeding because I knew if I could do it at 16, I could definitely do it later in life.
- 5:13Yeah.
- 5:13And now that you have participated, managed on multiple things, what is some of like the toughest lessons that you've learned?
- 5:21Oh gosh.
- 5:22Management of people.
- 5:23Yeah people are tough.
- 5:25So in my industry so the event industry it's so hard to have staff and then I have a really hard time of like having people who work at my level.
- 5:35So because I'm a super hard worker, I work like there's not a time block in my day that I don't have something scheduled.
- 5:42And so I project, I used to project that a lot on other people and having that super high unrealistic expectation for others like, hey, I'm busting my butt.
- 5:49You should be busting yours. Yeah.
- 5:51And I think over time, my management style has changed to kind of be more understanding of like, hey, not everyone's going to be me, not everyone's going to work like me.
- 6:00But if I can show them that I'm working alongside them and I care as much or I care, I care what they're doing regardless of their effort.
- 6:10Yeah, that's that's the one thing I learned in leadership too, like along the way is like, not everybody's as invested to you as you are.
- 6:17So like, you really want everything to be successful and maybe you're part time.
- 6:22They just like not the 16 year old you were.
- 6:25But like the current 16 year old you have hired or whatever it might be like, this is a summer game.
- 6:30My mom makes me do cool.
- 6:31Sometimes I'm like, why are you only picking up one plate?
- 6:34You're missing pickup seven.
- 6:35Like, yeah, make it worth your while.
- 6:37I think that's also like the moms and us too.
- 6:40Like we have to be efficient.
- 6:40Time is money, people.
- 6:42We can't like eight make eight trips to one table.
- 6:46You're going to be like, I'm so tired.
- 6:48Yeah, yeah.
- 6:49You're five minutes into your shift.
- 6:51Like, pull it together. Yeah, totally.
- 6:53What is something that you wish you would have known before starting your own business?
- 7:01I wish.
- 7:04I don't know, yeah.
- 7:07I think what's really nice is, like, I've really grown and I've grown with my business, so.
- 7:12And I've grown it in my own pace.
- 7:13So when I first started, it was, it was always like, and like a part time job on top of my catering job.
- 7:21So I always work full time catering.
- 7:23That's just of my 9 to 5 paycheck support, my family.
- 7:27And so planning was on top of that that I offered to our clients.
- 7:30So it gave me the opportunity to kind of grow in my full time position, but then also like, see how I wanted my business to run.
- 7:40And so I was always able to pull back or increase the amount of money I was making or the amount of commitment I was giving because it was just a part time thing. Yeah.
- 7:50And so it is it's not as much a part time thing anymore, but it's like I only book as much as I want to and how much I want and like the yeah, the growth.
- 8:03But currently I've been working really hard at it.
- 8:05I just hired my full my first full time employee.
- 8:08That's exciting.
- 8:09She's kicking butt, I love her, and so.
- 8:12And it's just nice to kind of see.
- 8:21The growth, the growth.
- 8:22And, like, how much effort you put into it is what you're going to get back.
- 8:25Totally. And I've kind of seen that kind of reaction.
- 8:28And like so many different ways.
- 8:30So I think I don't know if that's something I should have known before I started, but it was a lot of busy kind of grow.
- 8:37Yeah, a lot of business ownership is just doing and learning.
- 8:40Yeah. You just got to like and I think I just did it.
- 8:43I was like, everyone told me I should do it and I did it, and I started slow.
- 8:46And then I just ramped up and I'm just I'm in a really good spot right now.
- 8:50So that's awesome. It's awesome.
- 8:51As a wedding planner, how often is it where people are asking you, like, what are the top trends?
- 8:57Or should I be doing this at my wedding?
- 8:59Or do most brides come to you with like their binder of like, this is what I want?
- 9:03Oh ash, if you're a binder bride, we're going to put that to the side.
- 9:07No, I'm just kidding.
- 9:09If my brides are watching this, I love you.
- 9:10But what I will say.
- 9:12So for me, I like to really focus on the couple.
- 9:16So I'm not going to come with you.
- 9:19I'm not your.
- 9:20I'm not Jennifer Lopez with an earpiece and a belt.
- 9:23Okay. So what?
- 9:25I mean, for a lot of reasons, that's just not me.
- 9:28But what's really nice is, like, I just like, I come to them and I'm like, I'm real with them. Like, what's your budget?
- 9:34What do you want it to look like?
- 9:34Like vision boards. Totally.
- 9:37But then I work with them on really creating something that they, it's a that's attainable for their budget and that's going to make them happy.
- 9:46And they're not going to be like feeling regrets afterwards, like, oh, I shouldn't spend all my money on that or yeah, oh, I guess we didn't need the doves.
- 9:57Yes. Yeah, 100%.
- 9:59You don't need the doves.
- 10:00No judgment to anyone that had doves at their wedding.
- 10:02I, I have not had doves at a wedding yet, so there you go.
- 10:07I don't know how we would do that, but really, that's why you need the earpiece.
- 10:12Release the doves.
- 10:13Now, see, that's why I don't have one.
- 10:15Is because they're not releasing any.
- 10:16Right. Got it. Perfect.
- 10:18But I really. It's just.
- 10:19It's about the client. For me.
- 10:21It's not. I don't want them to be like me.
- 10:23Like none of the weddings I would I do are exactly what I would do.
- 10:27Because that's the beauty of events, is every client gets their own choice of what they're going to have on their wedding day.
- 10:32If you don't want to walk down the aisle in a dress, go for it.
- 10:37If you want to have a ceremony before and just have a party, that's totally fine too. If you like.
- 10:42Whatever it is that's like your thing that you want, go for it.
- 10:46Yeah, just do it.
- 10:47So when someone comes to you to plan their wedding, do you have like a list of vendors that you use or do they normally, like come with their own vendors, or is it kind of a combo.
- 10:56So it's kind of a combo.
- 10:57If there is a full planning package, then it's like I help them along the way.
- 11:00I do everything for them.
- 11:02But if a lot of couples come to us with some vendors and they're like, I need help.
- 11:07And so we can kind of his piece things together and kind of help them finish out.
- 11:11I do have a list because I've been I've been in the industry for so long of some people that I've worked with, I trust, and I love working with them and in a lot of different budget ranges.
- 11:21So it's nice where I can be like, okay, well, you don't have the budget for this, but I have these other people.
- 11:28Yeah, that are within that.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:30It's the same in real estate, like when people will call me and be like, I need a plumber.
- 11:34I know 30 plumbers, but also I know which plumbers I'll go to.
- 11:37Which area exactly what their budget is.
- 11:39If they'll only do a full bathroom remodel, if it will come change the toilet.
- 11:43Like there's totally different. Exactly.
- 11:45And I think that's the same in any industry.
- 11:47Like you just know and like knowing the couple, like, okay, well this person probably not a good fit with this couple.
- 11:53Yeah. Or this person is. So yeah.
- 11:55Or they'll charge extra to come out to a different venue or whatever.
- 11:59What is some advice?
- 12:00If someone was like, oh my gosh, I'm getting married, what advice would you give me on choosing an event planner?
- 12:06Like what would you tell them?
- 12:07Like kind of questions to ask or how to select the right event planner for them?
- 12:12Yeah, I think a lot of times people are put off by just like the cost.
- 12:16Sure. So oh, that's too expensive for me.
- 12:19Well, think about how much money that person is going to save you with like discounts that they get or like, well, just time to like being savvy about like how to do things and how to do things in a less expensive way or just saving you time.
- 12:34Like, what's that value bring? Yeah.
- 12:36Also, don't book someone that you don't get along with.
- 12:40Oh yeah. Because you're going to spend a lot of time.
- 12:41Yeah, exactly.
- 12:42And you have to be like, hey Katie, I don't like that.
- 12:45Or hey, Katie, can you talk to this person?
- 12:48I'm having a hard time learning.
- 12:49Like, I feel like I'm a little mini psychologist.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:52So it's like, hey, I'm having these issues with my mom, and I need you to help me kind of walk through it, and I'll just be like, hey, this is what I've seen in the past.
- 13:02Yeah, it's not a big deal.
- 13:02Like work through it.
- 13:04And so I think the most important thing is don't be afraid of the cost because there's a huge value in it.
- 13:11Yeah. And like vibe with the person you're talking to.
- 13:14Like, if you have a great conversation and you're like, oh, okay, she gets me.
- 13:16She or yeah, he or he, whoever the planner is.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:19Just like go with your gut because if you like that person, you're going to work with them like walnuts cannot.
- 13:26It's got to be so beneficial to have somebody outside of your sphere, like your parents and everybody else, to give you perspective or point of views.
- 13:34Because even when your parents or best friends or family members, whenever they even though they mean well, they still have what they want for you in their head. So, like, what do you mean?
- 13:44You want a buffet?
- 13:45We will do plated. And you're like, But I'm paying for it. Yeah.
- 13:48And the buffet is a little bit better.
- 13:50Yeah, or this way with allergies, we don't have to worry about anybody's allergies because they can just serve themselves or whatever. But.
- 13:57So it's probably going to be so beneficial just to have that person like you to say, no, it's fine.
- 14:01The buffet is a great option.
- 14:03And this is why like instead of like worrying about where I am, buddy is going to judge us if we're not plated or cares about money.
- 14:09Let me. Yeah, let it go about what?
- 14:12That is at the bar. Yeah.
- 14:13Let me keep buddy away from there. Okay.
- 14:15Got it.
- 14:16Perfect, perfect.
- 14:18What are some trends that you're noticing right now on weddings?
- 14:20Is there anything like super popular that has been trending or is it actually just pretty unique?
- 14:27Gosh, I don't have anything that's pinpointing and I don't really like to follow trends, because if you're doing if you're following the trends, then you're not doing it.
- 14:36You're not being unique to yourself, like you're not doing things that are unique to you and your your your story with your parents.
- 14:46So I don't know about what trends.
- 14:48Yeah, that are going on, I don't know.
- 14:50Well, I guess I just was thinking like, to like if people come to you and like, I saw this on TikTok or I saw real and I want to do this.
- 14:57Yeah, I know you love social media so well, sometimes it's so hard to.
- 15:02Social media is so unrealistic.
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:04And people see these pretty photos and like, oh my gosh, look at these flowers.
- 15:07I'm like, okay, that's $10,000 in flowers.
- 15:10You have a $4,000 flower budget.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:14Okay.
- 15:15Like yeah it's super pretty I agree.
- 15:18But and again just where do you want to spend your money.
- 15:20Like if you were going to move money from a different part of your budget.
- 15:24Yeah. Exactly.
- 15:24Where would you want to move it from.
- 15:26Or are we okay with.
- 15:27Because $4,000 still buys a lot of flowers?
- 15:29Yes, 100%. Yeah.
- 15:31But also like, you don't need flowers on top, flowers on top of flowers.
- 15:33Right. If, unless that's what you want. Right.
- 15:36But I again bringing back to reality like.
- 15:40Yeah social media is not always reality.
- 15:43Do you ever give advice also on the catering side of like menu selection like, lasagna is great, but it's messy or, you know, like things like that.
- 15:53So because I call in Portland Catering company and I'm like so involved in catering and doing all those things, we do tastings.
- 15:59So in the tasting we talk a lot about like, okay, what do you want the field to be?
- 16:04How like, what do you want the meal to achieve all those things?
- 16:07We don't really have a lot of people that do like lasagna.
- 16:12So we do like pasta water super popular.
- 16:15It's like it's very cost effective. Yeah.
- 16:18And it's filling. Yeah.
- 16:20And and most people love. Yeah.
- 16:22So when we do something like that, I always try to be like, okay, we'll do like a, a light source, like a olive oil or something with no sauce that.
- 16:34Yeah. That way there's options.
- 16:35So those people that spill on themselves I know me.
- 16:39She's looking at me well, actually at my wedding.
- 16:42Salsa straight down. Yeah.
- 16:44Because I love chips and salsa.
- 16:45So I was like, I got down chips and salsa.
- 16:47Why was no one like Rochelle?
- 16:49You're a terrible eater.
- 16:50You shouldn't be allowed outside with salsa.
- 16:53This is like straight out on your dress, just straight down.
- 16:56And I was like, oh God, we're done with pictures.
- 16:59But like, there was still pictures of us on the night of dancing and sports.
- 17:02Salsa, babe.
- 17:03Perfect. Just perfect.
- 17:04Lastly, I didn't have a Katy and now in hindsight, I should have.
- 17:09Yeah, yeah.
- 17:10There's always everybody's like, oh yeah sure.
- 17:11That salsa. That makes sense.
- 17:11Not one I, I buy actually.
- 17:14Now that I think about it, there's plenty money being exchanged behind closed doors.
- 17:18Like how long before salsa is on her dress.
- 17:21Exactly. Yeah, I give it 20.
- 17:21Wait a minute.
- 17:23I know she's. Yeah, it's going to come.
- 17:23Yeah, it's going to do it.
- 17:25Let me think about who bought shots until they won that.
- 17:28But yeah.
- 17:31Yeah.
- 17:31That's so funny with catering.
- 17:34So obviously you do weddings.
- 17:35What are other events that you guys do outside of that.
- 17:37So we do a lot of corporate.
- 17:38So corporate like luncheon learns and meetings and executive meetings and breakfasts and all like safety meetings, all that kind of of like any kind of corporate catering that you can think of.
- 17:48We do a lot of during the Monday through Friday and then we're a full service caterer.
- 17:51So we do receptions.
- 17:54So if you want to do like a happy hour with alcohol or whatever, apps and stuff like that, we do a lot of those like birthday parties, like what's like the smallest number to like the largest number, just to give people an idea.
- 18:06Because I think sometimes when people think catering, they think they need 100 people.
- 18:08Oh no, no, no.
- 18:10So we cater as little as like ten people.
- 18:13More so corporate, not so much social because I think social catering, like you would think, like you're going to cater your daughter's birthday party or something like that.
- 18:24We don't really do small things like that, per se.
- 18:27Yeah.
- 18:27But for corporate, we can be anywhere from ten people up to 1500.
- 18:32That's awesome.
- 18:32So huge scale. Yeah.
- 18:35And then small scale.
- 18:36Yeah, with the corporate stuff.
- 18:38So are you downtown a lot for that kind of stuff or.
- 18:41We're all over.
- 18:42Yeah.
- 18:42So we were in a really good location where we, we specifically picked that location because we're equidistant to like a lot of different places.
- 18:51So we can go to Hillsborough, we or we can go to Walton, Westland, downtown Portland, Oregon City, all those things like were in a pinned up.
- 19:00So we can kind of do that whole radius.
- 19:02So it's a little Portland metro.
- 19:04Do you go down towards Salem?
- 19:06We do, you know, so there's not a lot of bigger catering companies down in Salem.
- 19:10And so we do deliver a lot to Salem and like even out to like Newberg, McMinnville area.
- 19:17So if you pay a delivery fee, we'll be there.
- 19:20Yeah, maybe not the coast, but, you know.
- 19:22Well, it depends on the fee.
- 19:23Yeah. I would never say never. I guess out of all of your different entrepreneur hats.
- 19:30Like which one? Probably I would.
- 19:32And I guess it's catering because that's your longest history.
- 19:34But like, which one or do you feel like the most connected to?
- 19:39I know it's kind of like picking your favorite child, which is hard, but, you know, I don't know if I think they all make me who I am, so.
- 19:47And there's like value to each one of them.
- 19:49So I don't think I could ever pick one because I wouldn't be a successful event planner without catering.
- 19:55But also catering brought me to event planning, right?
- 19:58And this space I manage and I love and I love being here, but I also wouldn't be here without planning.
- 20:04So it's just like it's a huge web that just kind of creates who I am.
- 20:08Yeah, I'm really thankful for all of it.
- 20:10We are in a beautiful location today.
- 20:12It's a castle.
- 20:13When we pulled up, we were like, oh, you mean the Beast Castle?
- 20:16And welcome to my guest. Yeah.
- 20:18Talk to us a little bit about this space and like, what kind of events you do here.
- 20:22It's a really special place.
- 20:23So it's, it was originally purchased by a couple.
- 20:28It's 68 acres here in West Linn, and it had an original farmhouse.
- 20:32So she was a doctor. He was a dentist.
- 20:34And they her vision was that she wanted to retire and run a venue.
- 20:40When she retired, she wanted to run a venue and she always loved European history and like chateaux and all that stuff.
- 20:47So she really wanted to build this.
- 20:49So she built this property.
- 20:50They built their home first there in the back 5000ft².
- 20:54And then it took a while to get the permitting for the front 5000ft².
- 20:58So they got the permits, built the venue, and then unfortunately, she got diagnosed with, terminal cancer and passed away.
- 21:05Oh, gosh.
- 21:05So she never really got to see it and flourish and with, like, an events happening.
- 21:11But she had her hand and everything here.
- 21:14Her name is Christina Harp.
- 21:15She was a doctor.
- 21:17She was very well known in the area.
- 21:20And so, actually, it's any time we have an event, it's like.
- 21:23Oh, Doctor Harp was my doctor, and, it's it's really special.
- 21:27Dan, her wife, he and I work really closely together, so I joke that I run the space, and he.
- 21:33Most of the lawn.
- 21:34So he does all go mow the lawn. Dang.
- 21:37No, it's not like that.
- 21:37It's like, hey, Dan, you're in.
- 21:38I'm in London.
- 21:38He does all the landscaping.
- 21:41And he really just love seeing people enjoy a space.
- 21:46His wife and.
- 21:47Yeah.
- 21:47So it's really fun and it's great and it's unique.
- 21:51And we limit the amount of events that we do, and it's, it's just a really special space.
- 21:57And. Yeah, he's really happy to share it with everyone, but I know that.
- 22:01So this is my first time here.
- 22:02But when I walked in, it's very elegant but welcoming at the same time.
- 22:06And sometimes when you walk into something that's so elegant and you're like, don't touch anything you can.
- 22:10We just heard my salsa story.
- 22:11So, like, behave, touch that. Fine.
- 22:14But like, it's just it feels still like, oh, no.
- 22:17Move around. Enjoy.
- 22:18Have a seat.
- 22:19Like, it's very welcoming and it's so cool.
- 22:21How many.
- 22:22No, no, but it definitely has like, that elegance.
- 22:26Charm where it does feel like, oh, this is like a lot of people say like when they drive up the driveway, they feel like they're like transform, like they're taken out of organ and they're in this like different space.
- 22:36Yeah. Like they don't feel like they're in organ when they're here.
- 22:39Which is funny how often when people have weddings here.
- 22:42I know that you were saying that the bride and the groom tend to stay the night.
- 22:45Does anybody else normally get to stay on the property?
- 22:48We're not.
- 22:48We're not Airbnb.
- 22:49I don't want to be an innkeeper.
- 22:52What do you mean?
- 22:52I mean, I don't want to.
- 22:54You don't want to be a mom of all spots.
- 22:54I don't want to.
- 22:57I don't want to do my own laundry.
- 22:58I don't want to do laundry here. Yeah.
- 23:00So it just.
- 23:01So when you book the space, you get kind of for the weekend.
- 23:03So access Friday, all event, all day Saturday.
- 23:07The couple can spend the night the night of their wedding, and then they're out on Sunday.
- 23:11So it's just really nice.
- 23:13There's a lot of getting ready spaces here so families can kind of enjoy getting ready in the morning, and then the event can happen.
- 23:19Everyone leaves and the bride and groom can have their own space.
- 23:22Yeah. So it's it's nice in that way.
- 23:24How big of events have you had here?
- 23:27Oh, gosh.
- 23:27The biggest we've had I think it was like 275.
- 23:31We try to limit it to 200.
- 23:33We only we make special exceptions for those bigger events just because it's a lot of wear and tear on the property.
- 23:38Yeah.
- 23:38Well and parking and everything are we have a huge parking lot.
- 23:41Yeah I, we have the space but it's more of like the management of people just because it's a huge property and like, yeah, managing all those people.
- 23:49But we've also had wedding as small as like 40.
- 23:52So it's a huge, huge swing of like people who want to enjoy the space here.
- 23:58And what are some of the other spaces that you manage or have events at?
- 24:02Oh, gosh.
- 24:02So I just started helping a new venue out in Carmel, Carlton I think it's Carlton.
- 24:09I think it's technically their address or something different, but it's Bella Vita 360.
- 24:13It's their space is incredible.
- 24:16So it, they just built this new beautiful tasting room which is by I think it's by appointment only.
- 24:21I correct me if I'm wrong I don't know but it's, it has a 360 degree view of the valley.
- 24:29Oh, wow.
- 24:30So you can see all the mountains when it's cleared on a clear day.
- 24:33It's just an incredible space.
- 24:35And their lawn is perfectly manicured and huge.
- 24:39So you can fit like a 40 by 110 for your reception and then have the rest to have the ceremony.
- 24:44And it's like you don't feel like you're cramped.
- 24:46It's all in one space.
- 24:48So it's just it's really gorgeous.
- 24:49So that's another space.
- 24:51Portland Catering Company has something in the works that I can't technically talk about yet. But stay tuned on that one.
- 24:58Yeah.
- 24:59And then we help oven, winery out in McMinnville as well.
- 25:05Okay, cool.
- 25:06And then if someone hires you as an event planner, obviously they don't have to use those spaces you just talked about or what are some other spaces that have been pretty popular in the area?
- 25:16Oh gosh. How much time do you have?
- 25:19Wow. Well, so truly, there's so many great venues around here that I worked at and I love all the venue owners and things.
- 25:27And I, I don't just work with Portland Catering Company as if I'm wedding or if I'm an event planner.
- 25:33I don't you don't just have to work with Berkeley Catering Company.
- 25:35You don't just have to have your event.
- 25:37Here we go, kind of wherever.
- 25:39So we do a lot of things in like downtown Portland and wine country and all all over the places.
- 25:46Yeah, you are a busy mom like I am.
- 25:50I know she's got two awesome kiddos.
- 25:53And, how do you manage the mom guilt versus work?
- 25:58Guilt?
- 25:58Like, oh, I should be with my kids tonight, or I'm working, like, so I, I've heard I think this is the new thing that people have really started talking about.
- 26:08It's like this mom guilt thing.
- 26:10I don't personally get it.
- 26:12At least I don't think I do.
- 26:14I try to really be present when I'm home with my kids.
- 26:19I'm really lucky.
- 26:19Where is my home? My home.
- 26:22My husband is a stay at home dad.
- 26:24So he gets to be at home with them and pick Olivia up from school and take him to the park and do all those things.
- 26:31And so I feel like my sacrifice of him being able to stay at home and have that time with the kids, like I'm super present when we're there, like they're together and we we make sure that we take family trips and we own a trailer and we go camping when we can when I don't have a wedding, those kinds of things.
- 26:48So I think being intentional with your time, mitigates a lot of that total guilt that you're going to have.
- 26:54Yeah.
- 26:55And just don't be on your phone the whole time you're home, like you're done.
- 26:58You're done working. Put it away.
- 27:00Yeah, well, and you do a lot of stuff too, like coach.
- 27:03Like.
- 27:03So we both coached basketball together this year.
- 27:06I'm trying to get her to coach volleyball with me.
- 27:09Just thinking about it.
- 27:09Just ask my husband.
- 27:11I know.
- 27:11Yeah, I know when I see him on Monday, I will.
- 27:14Olivia was like, mom, you're coaching, right?
- 27:16And I was like, well, you ask her dad.
- 27:18I like it because, yeah, because it's hard for him.
- 27:20Because he's he doesn't obviously he didn't play girls sports, so she doesn't know.
- 27:25And so he can't coach. Well, he doesn't feel comfortable coaching.
- 27:27Sure. And, I was like, you get Lucas.
- 27:29Yeah, I get Olivia.
- 27:29This is my time. Exactly.
- 27:32Yeah. So he'll be playing sports before you know it.
- 27:35Exactly. Yeah.
- 27:36And then you also coach softball, and then you, like you said, you're a part of the PAC.
- 27:40And so, like, you're involved a lot with the kids too.
- 27:42So I think that helps.
- 27:43Well and I think for me volunteerism is really important.
- 27:47Like you, we in the Sherwood area where there's a lot going on and like a lot of parents are involved, but a lot of parents aren't involved.
- 27:55So it's like, again, you get what you put into it.
- 27:59So I really want the schools to be great.
- 28:02I want my kids to have great opportunities.
- 28:04I think that's why.
- 28:05So with softball, starting, sure, it's off a little league.
- 28:09That was like a huge thing because we wanted more opportunity for the girls and like having a little league in Sherwood, we didn't have one.
- 28:16So like starting it in like, well, and it was such an impact too.
- 28:19So Katie was part of the forefront of getting the Sherwood Little League going, but also a neighboring town, Newburgh doesn't have a little league either.
- 28:27And so now they get to participate, and it's cool to watch the kids, like, engage and grow with each other, even if they're not at the same schools and not in the same towns, because eventually they might be, or they'll play each other and they're all going together.
- 28:39Yeah, yeah, you're going to mix them up?
- 28:41Yeah. Eventually. Yeah.
- 28:42So that's really awesome too.
- 28:44What have you learned from that experience, like launching a little league?
- 28:47That's probably been quite a learning experience.
- 28:51Yes. Back to the people part.
- 28:54A lot of work now.
- 28:56So Michael and I, we're really close now.
- 29:00So we kind of launched it together.
- 29:02Natalie, also helped us get it started, and it's kind of helping us on the board.
- 29:08But it's hard when it's only a couple parents that want to step up to the plate and do it, especially as being business owners and like running our own business and like taking time away from our family and our business totally put it together.
- 29:19But for me, the sacrifice is seeing all the girls, like at the field, happy and cheering and playing softball and owning the game.
- 29:30But it was, I think, the biggest thing I can say to people is that if you weren't willing to step up to the plate and volunteer and be a part of it.
- 29:41Maybe keep your thoughts to yourself.
- 29:41Yeah.
- 29:43Well and that's like with anything not just a little league.
- 29:45But yeah it is so frustrating when people give you feedback and that way where they're like why didn't you blah blah blah.
- 29:52And you're like well that's a great idea.
- 29:52Why don't you do that?
- 29:55But they're like, oh, I don't, I don't have time for that.
- 29:58And or like and we've just the negative feedback we've gotten is more so than like, hey, thanks for putting this together.
- 30:04Yeah.
- 30:04Hey, you did a great job this year.
- 30:07Here's some points.
- 30:08And like maybe wait till the end of the season to like, hey, you're still in the thick.
- 30:11Thank you so much for doing this.
- 30:13Your first year you had no groundwork whatsoever.
- 30:16You put everything together from scratch, but you could have done this.
- 30:18This is this.
- 30:19Well, and like one thing that's been eye opening to me that I wouldn't have thought of if I was starting the Little League, is how much field work needs to be done, because we're in Oregon.
- 30:28So like one week in the fields, beautiful.
- 30:30And then it rains all week and then it's flooding.
- 30:33And then you got to rework the field again and like have the proper equipment to do it.
- 30:37Or you have a bunch of parents out there like digging and doing all that stuff.
- 30:41And I was just like, oh, I coach basketball and volleyball.
- 30:44They're both inside in the gym.
- 30:46So, like, I don't have to worry about the weather.
- 30:48And I was just like, oh my gosh, it's just giving me so much more respect to you and all the other parents that are volunteering, doing all of that crazy hard work when it's 85 and like trying and it's a mud pit.
- 31:00Oh my gosh, I and we did a fundraiser so we were able to buy a gator to like yeah the field now.
- 31:06Oh my gosh.
- 31:06The amount of times I hand drug all fields before games and like parents are like, oh, it just happens.
- 31:13It just magically is ready or I think and clean.
- 31:16And maybe they think I don't know if they think that like, you guys are able to hire somebody or if like the.
- 31:22Well, because they play at the middle school field.
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:25And so I don't know if they think the school pays for someone to do that.
- 31:28I don't think they realize it's the program doing it well.
- 31:31And we have to rent the fields from the school. Right?
- 31:34So it's like, no, we're paying.
- 31:36And then we can't we can't afford to pay people to do it like the volunteers.
- 31:43Yeah.
- 31:43And so like, especially when, like the fields person was gone, it's like no one else is going to do it.
- 31:50So and like it's just there's like, oh well I would have helped.
- 31:56Would you really, would you have really been here at seven?
- 31:59And I'm not your field. Like, you want me to pick up snacks?
- 32:01I'm there.
- 32:02You want me to drop off water 100%?
- 32:04You want me to shovel dirt?
- 32:04You won't want me to in ten minutes.
- 32:07I'm terrible at it.
- 32:08I'm not good at it, and I hate it.
- 32:10It's like asking me to go on a hike now and like I would be the friend.
- 32:15Yeah, I would be that friend on a hike, like two seconds.
- 32:17Like, is that a snake? Is that a snake?
- 32:19Is that a snake?
- 32:20Is that one also, is it snack time like, is it like, is it break for lunch?
- 32:24You guys didn't bring wine.
- 32:24We weren't supposed to bring wine.
- 32:26Wait a minute.
- 32:27I brought my wine with the screw top.
- 32:27What's happening?
- 32:30It's actually my Camelbak. It's all white.
- 32:32Yeah. Why am I so dehydrated?
- 32:34What's going on there?
- 32:35Like you brought the spring water.
- 32:35I just brought wine.
- 32:38But I bring the best.
- 32:39Not okay.
- 32:40Yeah, I bring the entertainment.
- 32:42Yeah, I like it. Yeah.
- 32:43Everyone needs for sure.
- 32:44Yeah, but you're right.
- 32:46The my significant other is the one that was helping with the fields and managing the fields.
- 32:50And we had a family emergency and he had to go out of state for two weeks to help with family stuff.
- 32:54And then nobody else was available.
- 32:56No. Well, and then when I wasn't going to do it, it was Huntington's.
- 32:58I didn't know that had happened.
- 33:00Oh, gosh. And I was like, Where's Derek?
- 33:03And Michael was like, he's gone.
- 33:06I was like, what?
- 33:07What happened to the last?
- 33:08What's so?
- 33:10But then that's when I stepped up.
- 33:11I called my dad because I grew up playing softball, and my dad was my coach and did all the things.
- 33:15I was like, my dad?
- 33:18Yeah, I remember how much you love me.
- 33:20You know, how you really good at making doing fields?
- 33:22Can you maybe drive up and do this?
- 33:25But you're not busy, right, dad?
- 33:25But he did. He came up. He was.
- 33:28He was on time. Well, thank you. Katie's dad.
- 33:30Yeah.
- 33:31The girls appreciate it. Yes.
- 33:32For sure. What it was.
- 33:32He did it for Olivia.
- 33:35Yeah, yeah, well, she's pretty special, I guess.
- 33:39Everybody loves beans, I guess. Yeah.
- 33:41She calls her daughter beans, and I call my daughter bug.
- 33:44We're just like, we're coaching basketball.
- 33:46We're both like screaming beans, bug.
- 33:49Well, they we're both like, five to nothing.
- 33:53Curvy, feisty as all get out.
- 33:55Like, do not mess with our girls. No up.
- 33:59Actually, that's kind of interesting.
- 34:00I don't know if you run into this in your entrepreneurial world, but in coaching, we ran into this in basketball where we there'd be some gentlemen coaching and then they'd see these two, five, two girls and they would try to be like, that wasn't a foul or they weren't like doing stuff.
- 34:14And Katie hired her.
- 34:15Not quiet.
- 34:16No. And we were just like, hey, don't.
- 34:19Yeah, like or like dads to try to put us in our place and or like, I wasn't talking to you.
- 34:23And they're like, oh, they weren't expecting us to, like, stand up for ourselves or the girls when I think that kind of translates to like being an entrepreneur and like being a businesswoman and, like, standing around like, yeah, no, you can't just push me over.
- 34:36Like I'm.
- 34:36I have a voice. Yeah.
- 34:37I'm also I'm small, but so's dynamite.
- 34:40Back up buddy.
- 34:42Oh, yeah.
- 34:43I'm also not afraid of, like, just telling people, like, actually, no thank you, no thank you.
- 34:48When I think it shows the girls too, like how to respond to stuff.
- 34:52There is a couple games that I internally had to be like, it's fourth grade basketball.
- 34:55You're a role model.
- 34:58You are a role model.
- 34:58You are a role model.
- 35:00Do not do not like that internal monologue, that one game you're talking about.
- 35:03I'm glad I wasn't there.
- 35:05Yeah, I really probably better. Yeah.
- 35:07There was a very tough game where some parents were just, like, so crazy.
- 35:11And you're like, can they not just be fourth grade girls and learn the game?
- 35:14Let's also wreck.
- 35:15Like we're not winning championships right now.
- 35:17No one's getting a scholarship.
- 35:19Yeah. See I'm like literally sit down.
- 35:22What is wrong with you?
- 35:23Your daughter also just traveled.
- 35:23So. Yeah.
- 35:25Don't talk about that or.
- 35:26Yeah, like what is happening?
- 35:26It was crazy.
- 35:29Well, there's kids crying.
- 35:31It was like.
- 35:31It was like a movie, actually.
- 35:33It was like such a sitcom, like.
- 35:35Oh, Doyle rules situation.
- 35:37I was like, what is happening to him?
- 35:39Yeah, sometimes I wish I just had a camera following me just all day.
- 35:43Oh for sure.
- 35:44The comical things that happened.
- 35:45Yeah, I've thought about, you know, like when you watch those social media videos of, like, NFL players when they're miked up.
- 35:51And so you get to hear them.
- 35:52There are sometimes I wish that like, you got to hear people miked up all day.
- 35:56Oh, God. Like that would be really fun. See, I would need someone to walk around.
- 36:01Yeah. Same same.
- 36:03I try to have a a polished mouth, but yeah, I'm in.
- 36:06I'm in the hospitality industry.
- 36:08Yeah. We all talk like sailors. Yeah.
- 36:11When it's appropriate.
- 36:12Yeah. Rylan calls in children.
- 36:13Mommy words of someone cusses.
- 36:15She's like mommy where'd like, oh sorry, I say earmuffs.
- 36:20Yeah. So I was like, at least you know it's turkey.
- 36:22They were, Sorry we got off topic.
- 36:26Yeah. Okay. Yeah. We like to chat.
- 36:28Just to wrap things up, if someone was thinking about becoming a business owner, what is a piece of advice that you would give them to encourage them or to help prepare them?
- 36:39I think especially in my industry right now, there's a lot of people that are like, oh, I planned a wedding and I planned my own wedding, and I want to do it.
- 36:47And it's super fun.
- 36:48Just don't go in and act like you know everything because you really don't.
- 36:51Yeah.
- 36:52And you're going to put it like, just be a sponge, learn as much as you can from others and like, grow.
- 36:59But don't be so like in your face about it.
- 37:03Like, yeah, just grow and like learn what you can and do it at your own pace and don't just come in bulk.
- 37:11Well, and I think be open minded or understand that not everything is as easy as it looks.
- 37:18Yeah, because we have that in real estate too, where people will say like, oh my gosh, you just get to open doors and you up with the most beautiful houses.
- 37:26And that's such a small part of my job.
- 37:28Oh yeah.
- 37:29And I'm just like, oh no, you don't understand all of the stuff that goes on behind closed doors and negotiations and paperwork and like, I have a flip right now that I'm the listing agent for, and I've been presenting to like, wholesalers and builders, like, I'm actually, like, going to, like different companies and like, pitching this house on behalf of my seller.
- 37:51And she doesn't know I'm not going to tell her every day, like, this is what I'm doing on your behalf.
- 37:55But like, no one knows that you're doing all that stuff to get their house in front of, like they.
- 37:59Right, like you're not, oh, you get work commission.
- 38:02Oh, you sold all these houses.
- 38:03Yeah. Well, do you understand?
- 38:05Like how much work put in I put in to do that.
- 38:07Yeah I yeah, people do say that like, wow your commissions here I go.
- 38:11Yeah.
- 38:11But it also took me eight months to earn it because like from the very first conversation I ever had to, the closing table might have taken eight months. Exactly.
- 38:18So might seem huge. Yeah.
- 38:20So it might seem huge, but sometimes it's like, well, if you divide that by eight, that's not even minimum wage.
- 38:26No it's but yeah, but you have all these other fees and stuff.
- 38:29But I think it would be the same.
- 38:31And event planning like, oh, I planned this party and it was so fun.
- 38:34And it's like, that's awesome. That's great.
- 38:37But just know there's all this stuff you don't know.
- 38:40And like planning events for somebody else versus yourself is totally different.
- 38:43Exactly.
- 38:44Because like, you know what you want, but like helping someone guide what they want is a totally different.
- 38:49And also learning like especially events is is not your event, right?
- 38:54You have to take your opinions like your preferences out of it.
- 38:58Like, yeah, but I hate the color red.
- 38:59But if that's what they want, like you gotta go for it.
- 39:02You gotta lean in. Yeah. So totally.
