- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:19Speaker 1: It is episode fourteen of NHL Unscripted, a collab of
- 0:22Speaker 1: NHL and I Heard podcast As always, thanks so much
- 0:24Speaker 1: for checking us out and Big News Day. We're now
- 0:26Speaker 1: in the top twenty of hockey podcasts. We are surging,
- 0:29Speaker 1: my man, towards number one.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah, we're on a parabolic trend. As they say, we're
- 0:37Speaker 3: not quite at the top though we haven't crested yet.
- 0:39Speaker 1: At the top would be a Nora Academy Award winner
- 0:41Speaker 1: for five Oscars. Cine File and sixty will recap the
- 0:44Speaker 1: Oscars a triumpher performance for a Nora. In case you've
- 0:46Speaker 1: been listening, you know me and twere Reppin Shan Baker
- 0:48Speaker 1: who makes history with four Oscars. Plus we'll talk Colin O'Brian,
- 0:51Speaker 1: highlights and low lights of the awards ceremony itself. Big
- 0:53Speaker 1: time guest today, Jay, one of your guys biz Nasty,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Paul Bissonette.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Did he bring the heat or what? This was a
- 0:58Speaker 2: great episode?
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yeah, he was. He was just very He's just such
- 1:03Speaker 3: a good interview. He's polished. It's crazy how he what
- 1:07Speaker 3: he came from to now and and how he was
- 1:09Speaker 3: such a wild animal and then now he's like tamed
- 1:12Speaker 3: it and he knows when to use it and when
- 1:13Speaker 3: to have insightful answers and hockey and and all things
- 1:17Speaker 3: related to hockey. We even get into a little bit
- 1:19Speaker 3: of wwe folks.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's good stuff.
- 1:21Speaker 1: And JD and I got to hang out this week
- 1:23Speaker 1: on the road because it was Sharks Maple Leafs was
- 1:25Speaker 1: the Amazon Prime game and you're doing your Sharks radio
- 1:27Speaker 1: gig as well, so you had a nice little tour
- 1:29Speaker 1: here with these. Coach got to get called back home
- 1:31Speaker 1: to Montreal. I saw in Toronto, then he took the
- 1:32Speaker 1: bus to Buffalo.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Go ahead, it's a life of the NHL. Baby. We
- 1:37Speaker 3: got two points in Toronto and then we were outy
- 1:40Speaker 3: on the old bone rattler all the way to Buffalo
- 1:43Speaker 3: because it's quicker to take the bus over the border
- 1:46Speaker 3: from Toronto than it is to go through that horrible
- 1:49Speaker 3: airport at Pearson and the customs, and it's just the worst.
- 1:52Speaker 3: It's the worst airport in not only Canada but the US.
- 1:56Speaker 3: As Toronto Airport's.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Off Pierson or National. You despise it.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It's awful. Customs. Everything's bad about it. But what was
- 2:03Speaker 3: crazy as I was telling you guys it, I was
- 2:06Speaker 3: telling some people on the bus we got to the border,
- 2:08Speaker 3: and reminded me of you know, and I hate talking
- 2:10Speaker 3: about the pandemic and anything like that, but because there
- 2:13Speaker 3: was a weird time for everybody. But you're a COVID
- 2:15Speaker 3: in that's yeah, yeah, huge. But during the pandemic, I
- 2:20Speaker 3: walked over the border. So I walked over the border
- 2:24Speaker 3: and have Burlington, Vermont. When I was going to visit
- 2:26Speaker 3: my family in Quebec, I flew. I flew to Vermont,
- 2:29Speaker 3: took an uber to the border, and the uber driver
- 2:32Speaker 3: pulled off on the side of the road like a
- 2:34Speaker 3: mile away from the border, like into the woods, like
- 2:36Speaker 3: off the highway, and he's like, hey, I can't get
- 2:38Speaker 3: close because if I got close, they're going to test
- 2:40Speaker 3: me and I might not be able. They might like
- 2:42Speaker 3: take my car. And I was like, oh shit. So
- 2:44Speaker 3: I have like four bags with me, like rolling bags.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So I start hoofing it walking and I'm like where
- 2:50Speaker 3: do I go? And he's like, just follow this path
- 2:52Speaker 3: and I'm like, I'm in the middle of the woods,
- 2:53Speaker 3: like I don't know, I'm going So I see this
- 2:55Speaker 3: like government the government buildings. I start walking towards it,
- 2:58Speaker 3: and you know, I get I get within like one
- 3:00Speaker 3: hundred feet of it, and all of a sudden, this
- 3:02Speaker 3: cop comes flying out. Border Customs agent. What the hell
- 3:06Speaker 3: you doing. It's like, hey, I'm just trying to get
- 3:08Speaker 3: over the border, trying to see my family. He's like,
- 3:09Speaker 3: you gotta go on the other side of the road.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I'm like, that's a highway, sir. I cannot go on
- 3:14Speaker 3: a highway. I'm a human being. I'm not hitchhiking. I'm
- 3:17Speaker 3: just dragging over there. You think there's some vagrant with
- 3:21Speaker 3: rolling bags. So he goes, no, you gotta get over.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It's like legally can't be here. So I'm like, okay, whatever, yeah, okay,
- 3:25Speaker 3: appreciate it. So I start walking and I go screw this.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I'm walking around the building. So keep walking around the building.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Another door swings open. Another Border's agent goes, get over
- 3:34Speaker 3: the get over on the other side. I'm like, there's
- 3:36Speaker 3: a median there. I gotta hop i gotta get over there.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Semis flying by. I was like, what are we doing here?
- 3:41Speaker 3: And he's like he's like, we won't let you in
- 3:43Speaker 3: if you can't if you don't go over. So I
- 3:44Speaker 3: hop the fence. I got my bags. I'm walking like
- 3:47Speaker 3: half a mile now down the highway with semis and
- 3:51Speaker 3: there's only drink COVID. There's only one line for customs,
- 3:54Speaker 3: So I'm behind all these semi trucks, all these cars
- 3:56Speaker 3: and it's just me with my two rolling bags.
- 4:00Speaker 2: The littlest hobo Jason de Merselet hobo. Yeah, Wilson being
- 4:04Speaker 2: on the road.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I want a story about Maclin celebrating it because you
- 4:07Speaker 1: got to spend a little time with this eighteen year
- 4:08Speaker 1: old rookie who has just been sensational this year.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I got to do a Chipotle commercial
- 4:14Speaker 3: with him and with him in the NHL, and it
- 4:17Speaker 3: was actually great. I hadn't really had anyone on one
- 4:19Speaker 3: time with him. And it's always weird. You're with the
- 4:22Speaker 3: radio and TV and the guys that don't know you
- 4:25Speaker 3: or you know they're young. You know, he's eighteen nineteen
- 4:27Speaker 3: years old, so he never really watched me growing up
- 4:30Speaker 3: because I'm not a top end guy, so he probably
- 4:32Speaker 3: didn't see me a ton of his TV. So they're
- 4:34Speaker 3: always a little bit cautious about you, thinking you might
- 4:37Speaker 3: be trying to get one over on them. And you know,
- 4:38Speaker 3: kids are just they're timid. They're like deer in headlights.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So he was pretty quiet around me. But you know,
- 4:43Speaker 3: we kind of had probably about six hours together. We're
- 4:47Speaker 3: filming some stuff and we're just shooting the shit. We're
- 4:49Speaker 3: shooting the shit. And is such a great kid, so insightful.
- 4:53Speaker 3: You know, I love just picking his brain on what
- 4:56Speaker 3: he thought about the season, his career, you know, him
- 4:59Speaker 3: telling me how much he hated Will Smith because of
- 5:02Speaker 3: the BC rivalry.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Thomas Hicky he was in the broadcast and reference. He goes, Oh,
- 5:06Speaker 1: Jason Niverses telling me he's a great story, Go.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Ahead, Oh yeah, he said, He's like, I hated Will Smith.
- 5:10Speaker 3: And they're like best friends now, Like they like room
- 5:13Speaker 3: together on the road, they're always together, they're at the
- 5:16Speaker 3: HIF and so they have dinner together and he goes,
- 5:18Speaker 3: I hated Will Smith? Sid why did you hate Will Smith?
- 5:20Speaker 3: He goes, because just that BC team. He's like everything
- 5:24Speaker 3: they did, they cheat all over the place. And he goes,
- 5:26Speaker 3: they it would just work out for him. He goes, here,
- 5:27Speaker 3: I am working my ass off and I'm not getting
- 5:30Speaker 3: the same results and he's like it was just so
- 5:31Speaker 3: freshing because I love him. He's the best, and it
- 5:34Speaker 3: was just such a cool little moment, you know, hearing
- 5:37Speaker 3: that story about the rivalries obviously between BU and BC,
- 5:41Speaker 3: but you know, he's just a he's a great kid.
- 5:44Speaker 3: He just wants to be the best and that's all
- 5:47Speaker 3: he thinks about. And for him to be with Joe
- 5:50Speaker 3: Thornton is like one of the best things and the
- 5:52Speaker 3: funniest things, because Joe Thornton is probably like on the ice,
- 5:57Speaker 3: they're very similar, but off the ice, it's like completely different.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Like Macklin's like ice like Macklin's like really calm, he's
- 6:02Speaker 3: you know, he's he's dialed and he's doing the same.
- 6:04Speaker 3: And you know, Joseph Joe Thorn's a Tasmanian devil like
- 6:07Speaker 3: he just it's like cart you know, it's one of
- 6:10Speaker 3: those things with him, he's just you can't you can't
- 6:13Speaker 3: keep him in a room for more than twenty seconds
- 6:15Speaker 3: if you're not, you know, really keeping him impressed with
- 6:18Speaker 3: what you're saying. And so it's just it's a cool
- 6:21Speaker 3: dynamic that I think has probably helped Macklin a lot
- 6:23Speaker 3: this season.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, people make the parallels of Crosby rooming
- 6:28Speaker 1: with Mario, and I think it is celebrating with Thornton. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: young players come in, could be franchise players with faces
- 6:33Speaker 1: of the franchise previously, so it is definitely very cool.
- 6:35Speaker 1: All right, let's get to the trade deadline here Florida Panthers.
- 6:38Speaker 1: They make their move getting Seth Jones. One thing about
- 6:40Speaker 1: GM Bill Zido Jay, He's unafraid to make bold moves.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Matthew could shock on long term injury reserves that you know,
- 6:46Speaker 1: frees a significant amount of money.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They're looking to try to repeat that.
- 6:49Speaker 1: There's nine players who stood up in last year's postseason
- 6:51Speaker 1: end up leading the organization. So you know they lack
- 6:54Speaker 1: draft capitals, so to speak, but they're looking to make
- 6:57Speaker 1: some moves.
- 6:57Speaker 2: What do you think the Jones movement? Do you think
- 6:59Speaker 2: they're done?
- 7:00Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:00Speaker 3: I think that trade for Seth Jones. You know a
- 7:02Speaker 3: lot of people haven't been high on him, especially him
- 7:05Speaker 3: being in Chicago, and you know he hasn't really performed great.
- 7:08Speaker 3: He was super down his last interview before they traded him,
- 7:12Speaker 3: of like you just had enough and wanted to get out.
- 7:14Speaker 3: And you see he wants to play meaningful hockey. And
- 7:17Speaker 3: I know Pat Maroon went on a podcast and was
- 7:19Speaker 3: kind of more or less saying like he didn't like
- 7:22Speaker 3: what he said, but you know, told the line and
- 7:25Speaker 3: understood that. You know, Seth was just frustrated with the situation.
- 7:28Speaker 3: So I think it's a perfect system. Silva la Fay,
- 7:31Speaker 3: the d coach, there is a magician with D men.
- 7:34Speaker 3: He is gonna round out Seth Jones's game, I think,
- 7:39Speaker 3: And it's really just a perfect spot for him. He
- 7:41Speaker 3: doesn't need to be the guy. He's got three four
- 7:44Speaker 3: other demon with him, veteran guys that have won that
- 7:46Speaker 3: are there on this team. You know, he's probably gonna
- 7:48Speaker 3: play with that a Dmitri Kulakov or Nico Mikola who
- 7:52Speaker 3: just a perfect fit for him. And I just think
- 7:55Speaker 3: he's gonna flourish there. Like I think it was a
- 7:58Speaker 3: good trade. We kind of all we had our little
- 8:00Speaker 3: NHL Network group thread and we were all like, it's
- 8:04Speaker 3: a great trade for both teams. Like Chicago gets the
- 8:06Speaker 3: starting goalie with the future guy that was a frustrated
- 8:10Speaker 3: be behind Sergebrabowski and Florida Panthers get a top four
- 8:13Speaker 3: demon what they needed. And I think it's gonna really,
- 8:16Speaker 3: I mean, look out for the Panthers.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Man.
- 8:18Speaker 3: The Kittie Cats are are back, and I think by you,
- 8:23Speaker 3: Matthew's gonna be back come playoff time, and you have
- 8:25Speaker 3: that cap space, so go get a forward now. And
- 8:28Speaker 3: I think they're gonna just peek at the right time
- 8:30Speaker 3: and come playoff time and it's gonna be Uh. They're
- 8:32Speaker 3: gonna be a juggernaut again.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Next up the Vegas Golden Knights. They need a scoring
- 8:36Speaker 1: winger GrITT in the bottom six. I worked with Shane
- 8:38Speaker 1: Naughty of the Night Amazon Prime Course. He does a
- 8:40Speaker 1: lot of Vegas Golden Knights games, just telling me. Defensively,
- 8:43Speaker 1: they're great, They're very tough to score goals against. But
- 8:45Speaker 1: in terms of draft capital, no first round pick until
- 8:48Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven, they lack quality prospects and at least
- 8:50Speaker 1: with their gmcaley mccriminal said, is that they got ahead
- 8:53Speaker 1: of things a year ago, adding to a hand if
- 8:54Speaker 1: adding Thomas Hurtle, but ultimately that's sh Shaye Theodore Injuried
- 8:58Speaker 1: four Nations hurts. They want to make an impact move.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Brett Howden, Colo sar Dorfia.
- 9:03Speaker 2: They've been pleasant.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Prize of the season what do you see the Golden
- 9:06Speaker 1: Knights doing ahead of Frouday.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Well, you know, I was listening to Elliot Friedman's thirty
- 9:11Speaker 3: two Thoughts and I love what he said about Kelly
- 9:14Speaker 3: mccrimman that he's always like he he prides himself on
- 9:17Speaker 3: keeping things really tight to the chest and you don't
- 9:19Speaker 3: know what he's dealing and nothing gets out, but he's
- 9:22Speaker 3: taking a swing like he's gonna if there's a guy available,
- 9:25Speaker 3: and there's somebody that's a solid player that he can
- 9:28Speaker 3: go and get. I mean, I'm sure he's kicked the
- 9:30Speaker 3: tires on Miko Ranton in and if he could pick
- 9:33Speaker 3: him up, I'm sure was a guy that they wanted
- 9:36Speaker 3: him if he was available. So and I'm still reserving
- 9:40Speaker 3: the right to think that maybe he does go there
- 9:43Speaker 3: at the deadline and some random, huge trade. But you know,
- 9:47Speaker 3: I listen draft picks when you're under you know, fifteen
- 9:52Speaker 3: to thirty, Listen, it's a crap shoot. You know, the
- 9:54Speaker 3: top three picks are really something that can be an
- 9:57Speaker 3: influence on your franchise. But when you're constantly a perennial
- 10:00Speaker 3: playoff team, you know you could trade those draft picks
- 10:04Speaker 3: away and bringing meaningful NHL players, So I think you're
- 10:08Speaker 3: I think Shane Nighty's completely correct there because their decoor
- 10:11Speaker 3: is solid. I could maybe see Nick haig As as
- 10:15Speaker 3: one guy that could be dangled as a trade as
- 10:17Speaker 3: trade bait because he is such a solid player. I'm
- 10:20Speaker 3: very high on him as a player, and I think
- 10:22Speaker 3: they can go get a good return up front for him.
- 10:24Speaker 3: But again, they have one of the best top sixers
- 10:26Speaker 3: in the league when Shaye Theodore is back healthy, and
- 10:28Speaker 3: then obviously, you know, while Bill Carlson is going to
- 10:31Speaker 3: be back soon from injury, and you know, I think
- 10:34Speaker 3: they have the cap space. There's a lot of teams
- 10:36Speaker 3: with LTR money that can kind of make some move
- 10:38Speaker 3: So it's gonna be interesting to see who takes a swing.
- 10:41Speaker 3: And I think Vegas is a team that's never shied
- 10:43Speaker 3: away from taking a swing. And you know they they
- 10:45Speaker 3: they shoot first, ask questions later.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Fortune favors the ball, well said, the New Jersey Devil's
- 10:50Speaker 1: been tended a tail spin for much of the years.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And okay, and you were bullish on them at the
- 10:54Speaker 1: start of the year, thought they have a great year,
- 10:55Speaker 1: one of the elite teams.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Perhaps they could win. Yeah, but struggling recently.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I know it's not just like a backup goalie situation.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Maybe you want to upgrade on Jake Allen, but obviously
- 11:05Speaker 1: the concerns around j Jack Hughes, Nikohesher.
- 11:08Speaker 2: What do you like here with the Devils? What are
- 11:09Speaker 2: they gonna do?
- 11:10Speaker 3: Well? Jack Hughes is now done for the season and
- 11:13Speaker 3: back in September, so you have his money. I would
- 11:17Speaker 3: go get a centerman is I think they were already
- 11:21Speaker 3: kicking the tires and a centerment before Jack Hughes got hurt.
- 11:23Speaker 3: I would find a way to get a centerment that
- 11:26Speaker 3: fits in with the mold of their team. And what
- 11:28Speaker 3: I mean by that is somebody that's young that can
- 11:30Speaker 3: kind of grow with him. A Dylan Cousins I think
- 11:32Speaker 3: would be perfect on this team. Somebody that from Buffy, Yeah,
- 11:36Speaker 3: from Buffalo, Yeah. I think it would be a perfect fit.
- 11:39Speaker 3: And then come next year Jack's back healthy, and you
- 11:41Speaker 3: just see how far this team can go in the playoffs.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I think any kind of playoff experience will be good.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I think they're short up on the back end. They
- 11:47Speaker 3: have enough pieces there. They brought in a bunch of
- 11:50Speaker 3: veterans and then they have you know, Shamus Casey, Simon Nimitch,
- 11:54Speaker 3: Luke Hughes. Those guys are coming up. So I think
- 11:57Speaker 3: they're fine on the back end and in net they're solid.
- 11:59Speaker 3: It's just going to be finding a centerment. They need
- 12:01Speaker 3: to find a couple of impactful centermen. And yeah, I
- 12:05Speaker 3: think it's gonna be interesting with that Capsuanes that open
- 12:07Speaker 3: up and I assume Fitzgerald's gonna be super aggressive, but yeah,
- 12:11Speaker 3: they need a center.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Bad Kings are fascinating because every year they look really good. Nelson,
- 12:17Speaker 1: they got to face the Oilers in the playoffs. Maybe
- 12:18Speaker 1: it's gonna be the Vegas Golden Knights in the playoffs
- 12:20Speaker 1: and then they can't, you know, advance after those early arounds.
- 12:22Speaker 2: So Rob Blake is tired of seeing this.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It's been a great defensive team again for coach Jim
- 12:27Speaker 1: Hiller could use the goalie to bounce back to Darcy
- 12:30Speaker 1: Kemper's David Briddick hasn't been great, but it looks like
- 12:32Speaker 1: maybe some scoring there for the Kings top six.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think they need to score a
- 12:38Speaker 3: bag a bad. I look at Alex Tuck, I look
- 12:40Speaker 3: at Ricard Raquel. Those are two guys that stand out
- 12:44Speaker 3: to me that I would be they they really need that.
- 12:47Speaker 3: You know, I think the Kings, if they don't make
- 12:49Speaker 3: it out of the first round, it is going to
- 12:50Speaker 3: be very bad for business, especially all the moves they've made.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And now you're looking at you know, you also have
- 12:56Speaker 3: a young guy in Brent Clark who's not playing and
- 12:59Speaker 3: is getting to that point where he's probably frustrated being
- 13:01Speaker 3: like either trade me or play me. So that could
- 13:04Speaker 3: put potentially become a piece that you can move. But
- 13:06Speaker 3: they really need a scoring winger badly. They need somebody
- 13:10Speaker 3: to come in. I assume them to be very you know,
- 13:14Speaker 3: Rob Blake has hasn't shied away from making big moves,
- 13:16Speaker 3: and they've gotten some good depth scoring. You know, Quinn
- 13:19Speaker 3: Bydfield's taking a step forward. Warren Fogel has been a
- 13:21Speaker 3: dog for this team. But they need to go get
- 13:22Speaker 3: a legit score a right handed So the two guys
- 13:26Speaker 3: I look at as Alex Tuck and ricired Raquel.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Okay, a couple of good names there as well.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Meantime, the Dallas Stars, this is an interesting team because
- 13:35Speaker 1: again I think you might argue they're.
- 13:37Speaker 2: One of the top teams in the Western Conference, but
- 13:39Speaker 2: also could use a mover two prior to Friday. What
- 13:41Speaker 2: do you like Dallas to do well?
- 13:43Speaker 3: They're another team that has a lot of cap space
- 13:45Speaker 3: with the LTR, with injuries, mirror huskinning coming back, you
- 13:48Speaker 3: have a lot of things like and they're just so
- 13:50Speaker 3: ho hum. Jim Nail is such a son of a
- 13:53Speaker 3: bitch because he just does such a good job just
- 13:56Speaker 3: managing contracts and cap space and draft picks and getting
- 14:01Speaker 3: guys that just peek at the right time as guys
- 14:03Speaker 3: are retiring or trading away. And you know that's what
- 14:06Speaker 3: he did to me when he didn't re sign me,
- 14:07Speaker 3: was just it was just masterclass moved by him and
- 14:10Speaker 3: one after the other. And I think it's a team
- 14:13Speaker 3: that needs a d man. I think they need maybe
- 14:17Speaker 3: add another demon. I talked to somebody the other day.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Who was it that said they really would think like
- 14:21Speaker 3: an Alexiak going back. He's familiar with Dallas. Was Jody
- 14:25Speaker 3: Shelley maybe or was it I'm not even Jody Sheller Microup,
- 14:28Speaker 3: but they were two tall guys that were tough, so
- 14:31Speaker 3: one of the two so they he was a changeable Yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 3: But I think Alexiak is a good piece that could
- 14:36Speaker 3: potentially go back. He's comfortable in Dallas, he played there,
- 14:40Speaker 3: he would be a good fit, can play both sides.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Has had experience playing with Alex with heyskin in and
- 14:48Speaker 3: then you know, you look at Segan is probably going
- 14:51Speaker 3: to be back. You know, the pickups you made up
- 14:53Speaker 3: front with Mikael Grantlin have just paid off so well,
- 14:56Speaker 3: you know him and Duchhane or it's a first line
- 14:59Speaker 3: basically on most teams, not a second line, And I
- 15:02Speaker 3: just think it's, uh, there's a lot to like there,
- 15:04Speaker 3: and it's gonna be a murderer's row in the central
- 15:07Speaker 3: and Dallas needs to go get a little bit more
- 15:09Speaker 3: insurance on the back end and maybe some depth just
- 15:13Speaker 3: if they want a chance to kind of finally get
- 15:15Speaker 3: over that hump.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Top four defense potentially there for dallasespecially as you said
- 15:18Speaker 1: with Hayston coming back. Tampa Bay Lightning had been unbelievable recently.
- 15:21Speaker 1: If everybody who thought in the Atlantic it was either
- 15:23Speaker 1: gonna be the least of the Panthers in the Lightning
- 15:25Speaker 1: come rolling Stuve Grimson or Buddy the grim Reapers, it
- 15:28Speaker 1: to me, I think Hegel is the most important player
- 15:30Speaker 1: to his team. If anyone he goes. He's been incredible
- 15:32Speaker 1: for the Lightning. You know, Vassilaska can steal a series.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Now critical that one seed is in that division. What
- 15:37Speaker 1: do you see coming from the Bolts?
- 15:38Speaker 3: Well, Brandon Hagel thirty goals, not one on the power play.
- 15:42Speaker 3: That's crazy stat so funny. Yeah, I mean Tampa, who
- 15:47Speaker 3: to thunk? You know, everybody laughed, they said, you know,
- 15:49Speaker 3: Ryan McDonough, the best years are behind him. Comes in.
- 15:53Speaker 3: He's just turned that decour around Moores, JJ Moser healthy.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Now I would like to see them go maybe pick
- 16:00Speaker 3: up a d man, but you know they go and
- 16:02Speaker 3: get Yanny Gordon, Oliver b Orik Strand and say, to
- 16:06Speaker 3: hell with the draft picks, screw it. We push them
- 16:09Speaker 3: to chips in and that is just what this team does.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And they're immediately for me, a contender. Again, it's a
- 16:15Speaker 3: scary team when you got you know, Nikita Kutrov and
- 16:18Speaker 3: bradon point and then you add these depth pieces and
- 16:21Speaker 3: you know, I was kind of high and bullish on
- 16:23Speaker 3: them going after Alex Tuck. I think it would have
- 16:25Speaker 3: been a perfect fit. But I like the picks they
- 16:28Speaker 3: I like the pickups they made. I think they'll be
- 16:30Speaker 3: happy if they're done in the trade deadlines over and
- 16:34Speaker 3: they don't get anybody else. I think they're gonna be
- 16:36Speaker 3: happy with what they have because right now they're one
- 16:38Speaker 3: of the hottest teams. And you know, when you have
- 16:40Speaker 3: Vassilevski and Nets, I mean, you're you don't really necessarily
- 16:43Speaker 3: need to go spend overly on your decoor. But I'd
- 16:47Speaker 3: like to see them go maybe go get a little
- 16:48Speaker 3: bit more scoring, and especially for the second line, so
- 16:51Speaker 3: and Alex Tuck, if they could make the numbers work,
- 16:54Speaker 3: would be good. I just don't know what would have
- 16:56Speaker 3: to go back the other way because it would probably
- 16:58Speaker 3: be a big hole. And they just dumped all of
- 17:00Speaker 3: their draft picks. I mean, I don't think they have
- 17:02Speaker 3: a first round pick till fifty. So by then I'll
- 17:06Speaker 3: be driving electric cars.
- 17:08Speaker 1: We I'll be flying with the Jetsons. One more team
- 17:10Speaker 1: for the Winnipeg Jets. Oh, they got the Listen Jay.
- 17:14Speaker 1: They got a bunch of guys all gonna need a
- 17:15Speaker 1: raise in the next two years. Adam Lowry, Kyle Connor,
- 17:17Speaker 1: gave Blardi Kingston's own Nikolai Eelers. They got the best
- 17:20Speaker 1: goalie in the universe in Connor Hallibuck until it comes
- 17:22Speaker 1: to the playoffs.
- 17:23Speaker 2: That's when Helly gets leaky.
- 17:24Speaker 1: They got to replace Ben Dylan, you know, Chovel Day
- 17:28Speaker 1: I's gotta get some upgrades. I think, maybe not, I
- 17:30Speaker 1: think second line center. I know they just signed domestic
- 17:32Speaker 1: cooff the two or six billion dollar deal. But the
- 17:34Speaker 1: point is for Winnipeg, it's now or never. Chevy's gonna
- 17:37Speaker 1: make some moves here. Kevin shovel day Off.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Well, it scares me with Winnipeg and I've been it's
- 17:43Speaker 3: been the same thing. I've been singing the same tune,
- 17:45Speaker 3: broken record all season long, saying wake me up in April,
- 17:49Speaker 3: and I haven't seen them have one. You know, they
- 17:52Speaker 3: haven't had any adversity this season. Everything's kind of went
- 17:55Speaker 3: to plan.
- 17:56Speaker 4: They're like the.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Canucks last year, where it's like, is something gonna happen,
- 17:59Speaker 3: This team's gonna win, Like this is a great team
- 18:01Speaker 3: and they're playing perfectly to their system. They're attending's great.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Their decore has been solid. Josh Morris, he's putting a
- 18:07Speaker 3: borderline Norris Trophy season up and these they've just played
- 18:12Speaker 3: so well. So it makes me nervous because it's almost
- 18:16Speaker 3: like that comfortability and chevel Daeff goes. Yeah, maybe I
- 18:19Speaker 3: don't need to do anything and I think we'll be fine.
- 18:21Speaker 3: But one thing's for sure. I don't think Nikolai Eelers
- 18:24Speaker 3: is staying. I think he's leaving next year. I think
- 18:26Speaker 3: he wants to go be the guy somewhere. He wants
- 18:28Speaker 3: to be a top end talent. I feel like he
- 18:30Speaker 3: thinks he's kind of wants to go play in front
- 18:32Speaker 3: of the bright lights, a little bit of a smaller
- 18:34Speaker 3: market in Winnipeg. So you're gonna lose him, So I
- 18:36Speaker 3: don't know if you trade him. You definitely need to
- 18:38Speaker 3: keep him if you want to win a Cup, but
- 18:39Speaker 3: you need to go get like you said, I think
- 18:41Speaker 3: a scoring winger as well, but you need to shore
- 18:43Speaker 3: up that decor. You need an upgrade from nothing against
- 18:46Speaker 3: Logan Stanley, but you need a Jamie Alexiak kind of
- 18:49Speaker 3: Guy's another one. I was thinking of that another place
- 18:52Speaker 3: that he could land, because I think he was He's
- 18:54Speaker 3: an upgrade from Logan Stanley. He could really fit into
- 18:57Speaker 3: that system well and seamlessly. And I think they just
- 19:00Speaker 3: need some bigger bodies in the back end. I'm I'm
- 19:03Speaker 3: not super bullish on their decore. You know, I love
- 19:06Speaker 3: Josh Morrissey. I think to defense, I think Neil Peank's
- 19:10Speaker 3: having a fantastic here. I just think it gets a
- 19:12Speaker 3: little thin and come playoff time, they just haven't really
- 19:15Speaker 3: shown me enough where I'd be like, you need to
- 19:17Speaker 3: go get some insurance and some safety nets. And I
- 19:20Speaker 3: mean even Erasmus still line it. I would go, I'd
- 19:24Speaker 3: kick the tires thirty.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Years of age, five point one million dollar cap, but
- 19:27Speaker 1: that's not unusable.
- 19:28Speaker 3: No, and I'm sure Phillies will. But it's looking like
- 19:31Speaker 3: wrisk the lining and Lawton could be going to Toronto
- 19:35Speaker 3: is what I've been seeing. They're trying to really push
- 19:37Speaker 3: hard to package that. So Toronto maype Leaf's another team
- 19:40Speaker 3: that needs to go get After watching them and uh
- 19:43Speaker 3: in Toronto when they played San Jose, they need another
- 19:46Speaker 3: d man and they need a scoring whear. I just
- 19:48Speaker 3: don't think it's enough with what they have, even though
- 19:51Speaker 3: they've been fantastic all year. I think they need something.
- 19:54Speaker 3: So those are kind of my two teams that I
- 19:56Speaker 3: deem the same. Like it's teams that are very good,
- 19:59Speaker 3: but I haven't seen much adversity and that that always
- 20:02Speaker 3: scares me. I think you need to go through some
- 20:03Speaker 3: tough time if you want to win a Cup.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Some big names certainly still out there.
- 20:08Speaker 1: We all know if the Canucks trading J Teler, maybe
- 20:09Speaker 1: alias Petterson gets moved eleven point six million dollar cap
- 20:12Speaker 1: in his masters.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Who's taken A Who's taken Peterson? If you watched a
- 20:16Speaker 3: game and the Jesus you're more guy, but like poor guy.
- 20:20Speaker 3: I was poor guy for half the year and then
- 20:22Speaker 3: now I'm like, did you figure it out?
- 20:23Speaker 4: Man?
- 20:24Speaker 3: Go crywhere and come back.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Just shoot biggest.
- 20:26Speaker 1: If they doesn't shoot the puck, they look at his
- 20:28Speaker 1: numbers like Petterson just doesn't shoot, Like, just fuckit.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Here's comments eleven point six million. He goes, Yeah, I
- 20:35Speaker 3: just been like I haven't been trusting my shot. You're
- 20:39Speaker 3: making eleven point six you shouldn't have any confidence issues.
- 20:42Speaker 3: You'd be coming in swinging it and not just the stick.
- 20:46Speaker 3: I'm talking about everything else. You should just be BD
- 20:49Speaker 3: all over the place.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Thanks so much for the trade discussion. That was great.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Ja.
- 20:53Speaker 1: We'll break down more as obviously the weeks ahead, because
- 20:55Speaker 1: the trades will happen going into five trade deadline, and
- 20:57Speaker 1: we'll see what happens from there. We'll keep the good
- 20:59Speaker 1: vibes rolling next to business. That's right, Paul bitson that
- 21:02Speaker 1: on his unlikely career path to now media Darling. That's
- 21:05Speaker 1: coming up after break here on Unscripted Well, our next
- 21:19Speaker 1: guest was a fourth roilled pick the Pittsburgh Penguins in
- 21:21Speaker 1: two thousand and three, played two hundred and two NHL
- 21:23Speaker 1: games for winning a Calder cuple the Manchester Monarchs in
- 21:26Speaker 1: the American Hockey League. Today, he is known as one
- 21:28Speaker 1: of the loudest and most charismatic voices in sports media
- 21:31Speaker 1: for his work on T and T, the Spit and
- 21:33Speaker 1: Chicklets podcast, and his exploits. As they say on social media,
- 21:37Speaker 1: it is biz, nasty, ladies and gentlemen. Paul Albert Bissonette,
- 21:40Speaker 1: It's great to see him. Man love the middle name,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and definitely loud.
- 21:43Speaker 5: You know, not a lot of not a lot of
- 21:45Speaker 5: intelligent information coming on my mouth, but definitely loud.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Well listen as a guy who's like a proud Canadian
- 21:51Speaker 1: living in America. The video you posted like for all
- 21:52Speaker 1: of us, I mean, on this call right now, we're
- 21:55Speaker 1: all Canadians living in America. When Candle won the four Nations.
- 21:57Speaker 1: The video posted was incredible. That was speaking for a
- 21:59Speaker 1: generation of Canadians.
- 22:00Speaker 4: We needed that one. Boys, there's a lot going on
- 22:03Speaker 4: in the world right now.
- 22:03Speaker 5: We needed a little morale boost for US Canadian So
- 22:08Speaker 5: very happy they could get it done. And we we uh,
- 22:10Speaker 5: we retain bragging rights in in the hockey world at
- 22:13Speaker 5: least until the Olympics.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Yeah, at least until damn the tariffs. We're still on
- 22:18Speaker 3: top of hockey.
- 22:18Speaker 4: We got it.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Now they're taking Whitney off the shelves into oh yeah, yeah,
- 22:27Speaker 5: Ford's taking all the booze off the shelves and uh
- 22:30Speaker 5: and probably the rest of Canada as these tariffs, the
- 22:33Speaker 5: tariff war continues. But hey, let's talk about hockey and
- 22:36Speaker 5: have some fun and not worried about the bullshit the world.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Well, hey, talking about Toronto. We were both at the
- 22:42Speaker 3: game Amazon Monday Night Prime with Adnan and I was
- 22:46Speaker 3: doing some radio for the Sharks. What do you make
- 22:48Speaker 3: of this Toronto maple Leaves team. Obviously they've they've had
- 22:50Speaker 3: a tough schedule this go around and and but do
- 22:53Speaker 3: you think this is enough? Which with the roster they
- 22:56Speaker 3: have comprised right now to make a run in the playoffs.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think.
- 23:01Speaker 5: I think right now the concern is is Austin Matthews
- 23:04Speaker 5: hell slash maybe. I don't know what it is, whether
- 23:07Speaker 5: it's a slump or health. And you kind of see
- 23:08Speaker 5: McDavid going through it right now. Where these guys have
- 23:11Speaker 5: been like they're they're relied upon so heavily. They had
- 23:14Speaker 5: the crazier last year obviously the anticipation of foreign nations,
- 23:18Speaker 5: a little bit extra hockey. So just hoping he gets
- 23:21Speaker 5: his rest and he's fully healthy going in. I would
- 23:24Speaker 5: say that obviously Chris Tannev's health on the back end,
- 23:27Speaker 5: which apparently he's coming back soon, and I'd like to
- 23:30Speaker 5: see them pick up his brother at a little bit.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I just is gonna ask you with the news coming
- 23:36Speaker 3: up that they're willing to retain like that's a perfect guess.
- 23:39Speaker 4: That's just dangling the carrot.
- 23:41Speaker 5: Hey telling everybody we'll eat half, and everybody's just licking
- 23:44Speaker 5: their chops. Because Turbo is great man. He provides that energy,
- 23:47Speaker 5: he's in your face, he doesn't get intimidated by anything,
- 23:51Speaker 5: and he really helps establish more of a for check
- 23:54Speaker 5: right and come playoff time, we know how that important
- 23:56Speaker 5: that is, especially with you you know your combating Florida,
- 23:59Speaker 5: You're looking at the best teams in the East and
- 24:01Speaker 5: what do they have and what you need to compete against,
- 24:05Speaker 5: and and going back to that point is is their
- 24:07Speaker 5: center ice? Right, they got bark Off, Bennett and Lundell.
- 24:11Speaker 5: So for me, as good as JT's played, yeah, maybe
- 24:14Speaker 5: he stays in that second line center role come playoff time.
- 24:17Speaker 5: But I'd like to see them add somebody there. And
- 24:20Speaker 5: the name that keeps popping up is Braden Sheen. You know,
- 24:23Speaker 5: Toronto does have guys that can get rid of, including
- 24:26Speaker 5: first rounders, to try to entice Saint Louis on a
- 24:29Speaker 5: trade there. And if not him, you know, maybe uh,
- 24:33Speaker 5: I don't. I don't know who else could fit in
- 24:35Speaker 5: that role, but I think some depth that center ice
- 24:37Speaker 5: would definitely help him. So if they could add if
- 24:39Speaker 5: they could add just those two guys tenev Matthew's health
- 24:43Speaker 5: and then and then maybe Braden Shen or anybody else,
- 24:46Speaker 5: I think that, you know, they have just as good
- 24:48Speaker 5: a chance as anyone, especially at the fact that Florida's
- 24:51Speaker 5: played a lot of hockey here in the last three years, right,
- 24:54Speaker 5: there's a lot of added hockey, a lot of guys
- 24:56Speaker 5: played four nations as well, So I like our chances
- 24:59Speaker 5: and the fact that New Jersey, you know, with probably
- 25:02Speaker 5: losing Jack Hughes. You know, I I viewed them as
- 25:05Speaker 5: another threat. I would I would have assumed or still
- 25:07Speaker 5: assumed they might go make a move as well. So
- 25:11Speaker 5: not really sure who else you guys view as a
- 25:13Speaker 5: threat in the East. Washington's obviously up there, but I
- 25:16Speaker 5: still think people are having a hard time trusting them
- 25:19Speaker 5: if they actually uh, you know, get the playoffs.
- 25:21Speaker 4: And make a run.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I think for Toronto, and it sucks that they lost
- 25:25Speaker 5: against the Sharks because that extra point means everything right now,
- 25:28Speaker 5: winning that Atlantic Division is massive, Like, let Florida and
- 25:32Speaker 5: Tampa go beat the wheels off each other and then
- 25:35Speaker 5: hopefully you can draw Detroit, you know, maybe Columbus and
- 25:39Speaker 5: be able to make quick work of them and conserve
- 25:42Speaker 5: energy for a long playoff run. So that's pretty much
- 25:45Speaker 5: my view on Toronto base.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you with the trade deadline coming
- 25:48Speaker 1: up this Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes, they swing for the fences,
- 25:50Speaker 1: you trade, Marty nature should get ranted and apparently they
- 25:53Speaker 1: offered ranted one hundred million clams. Now I'm good now
- 25:56Speaker 1: you feel like you have to say face and trade him.
- 25:58Speaker 2: What would you do if you're the Carolina Hurricanes.
- 26:01Speaker 4: I don't I don't know what he turned down.
- 26:03Speaker 5: I think that Elliott even reported they offered him what
- 26:05Speaker 5: they what mcainner got.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, twelve point six.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Uh.
- 26:10Speaker 4: That's a lot of money for a winger.
- 26:12Speaker 5: And if he wants more than that, if you're willing
- 26:16Speaker 5: to buck up and pay it for him, I would
- 26:18Speaker 5: make sure you try to get that inked before the deadline,
- 26:21Speaker 5: because you know, I think they've done so much tremendous
- 26:24Speaker 5: things in Carolina. I think that they've worked really well
- 26:27Speaker 5: at getting it done by committee. So the criticism on
- 26:31Speaker 5: on them the last like three four years is they've
- 26:33Speaker 5: never had that true superstar to get them over the hump,
- 26:36Speaker 5: especially a big winger like that who can get to
- 26:39Speaker 5: the hard areas and and and who's.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Strong and win wins his wall battles.
- 26:43Speaker 5: I just I think that's a lot of money to
- 26:45Speaker 5: give a winger, and I think that if you do
- 26:48Speaker 5: go past the deadline, you're gonna have to drastically overpay.
- 26:52Speaker 5: And that's no insult to ranton and in order to
- 26:54Speaker 5: save face because saying by to Natius who's on such
- 26:57Speaker 5: a great contract and and and you know still has
- 27:00Speaker 5: room to grow as well as well as not being
- 27:02Speaker 5: able to lock in Genseel. Those are those are catastrophic
- 27:06Speaker 5: moves that can set you back a few years. So
- 27:09Speaker 5: it sucks because Carolina is one of those small markets
- 27:11Speaker 5: you really want to root for. And I understand why
- 27:14Speaker 5: they they want to swing for the fences and bring
- 27:16Speaker 5: that guy in who they've been criticized about not having,
- 27:19Speaker 5: But I would have only done so if they would
- 27:22Speaker 5: have been able to sign and trade, like I don't
- 27:25Speaker 5: you know.
- 27:25Speaker 4: It's and then also.
- 27:27Speaker 5: You're going to have all these other with the cap
- 27:29Speaker 5: going up, you're gonna have all these other big markets
- 27:31Speaker 5: being able to frontload the nuts out of that contract too.
- 27:34Speaker 5: So the money, the money gets even bigger. Right, So
- 27:37Speaker 5: you saw what they did with Matthews and and you know,
- 27:39Speaker 5: I think he made thirty one million dollars in the
- 27:41Speaker 5: first thirteen months of that last contract he signed well
- 27:45Speaker 5: before this past one. But anyway, it's, uh, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 5: I'd love to see them land them. But wow, I mean,
- 27:51Speaker 5: this is interesting times in the NHL. Man, It's awesome.
- 27:54Speaker 3: It's it's so I mean, the league is so hot
- 27:57Speaker 3: right now and cancel. But I mean, the one thing
- 28:00Speaker 3: Elliott talked about was like, if you have a player
- 28:03Speaker 3: on your contra at the deadline, you're the only one
- 28:06Speaker 3: that's allowed to sign them eight years, So you have
- 28:09Speaker 3: that eight year option. So I think that's kind of
- 28:12Speaker 3: the only enticing thing for me to like still maybe
- 28:14Speaker 3: trade him. As a team, I want them, but otherwise
- 28:17Speaker 3: I'm a team. I'm like, if they don't sign them,
- 28:18Speaker 3: I'll just wait, take a run of them, come come,
- 28:22Speaker 3: you know, July first. But I wanted to move to
- 28:24Speaker 3: the West for a second because you know, we talked
- 28:27Speaker 3: about Colorado, Martin hs. You know, they might do some
- 28:30Speaker 3: stuff at the deadline, But what do you see at
- 28:32Speaker 3: the Winnipeg Jets. It's kind of like, for me, it's
- 28:33Speaker 3: the Toronto Maple Leaves of the West, where show me
- 28:36Speaker 3: come April time? What can you guys do? Come playoff time?
- 28:39Speaker 3: But I feel like they're in a prime position. Maybe
- 28:42Speaker 3: pick up a rental because I don't know, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 3: Winnipeg smaller market's not the most enticing place. Who do
- 28:48Speaker 3: you see that could maybe fit into that roster seamlessly.
- 28:51Speaker 5: See that's the thing, like I would love to see
- 28:54Speaker 5: them make a move. I also I also kind of
- 28:58Speaker 5: view them as Tampa. Remember the year Tampa, they had
- 29:00Speaker 5: that unbelievable season, then they end up losing the Columbus
- 29:02Speaker 5: in the first round. Well, Tampa could have either sucked
- 29:05Speaker 5: their thumb in the offseason or they could have looked
- 29:08Speaker 5: themselves in the mirror, and they did, and then they
- 29:10Speaker 5: end up winning the Stanley Cup that next year. Right,
- 29:12Speaker 5: I think they ended up going back to back as well.
- 29:14Speaker 5: So I kind of view that at Winnipeg last year
- 29:17Speaker 5: they got shell shocked. They got to go to the
- 29:19Speaker 5: off season, look themselves in the mirror, take accountability. Hella
- 29:22Speaker 5: bucks right back to looking like his regular season self.
- 29:25Speaker 5: So I think that especially if they lock up the
- 29:28Speaker 5: West and they get that first seed, I think they're
- 29:31Speaker 5: poised for a little bit of a run. I just
- 29:33Speaker 5: don't know who they go out and get to address
- 29:35Speaker 5: their needs. Like my understanding is Nikolai Eils is not
- 29:39Speaker 5: coming back. He wants to be the guy and he
- 29:42Speaker 5: wants to be paid like the guy. And I assume
- 29:45Speaker 5: with the lack of high end free agencies this free
- 29:49Speaker 5: agent players this summer that he probably will get his
- 29:51Speaker 5: bag and and be able to be that first line
- 29:54Speaker 5: winger and play in all those situations that he wants
- 29:57Speaker 5: to so, but in the same breath, like I wouldn't
- 30:01Speaker 5: move on for him. But if there's like a big
- 30:03Speaker 5: package where if I considering you're not going to be
- 30:05Speaker 5: able to bring them back, that you can move off
- 30:07Speaker 5: from him, maybe solidify your back end a little bit,
- 30:10Speaker 5: because I don't I think they have the best third
- 30:13Speaker 5: line in the league, or if not one of them,
- 30:15Speaker 5: their top six is incredible. They're great, no issues with
- 30:20Speaker 5: their fourth line. Maybe you go make a small move there,
- 30:23Speaker 5: But for me, it's more about their you know, solidifying
- 30:27Speaker 5: their back end. I think there's a lot of pressure
- 30:28Speaker 5: on Morrissey and if they could maybe get one more
- 30:31Speaker 5: piece back there, I would I would really have a
- 30:33Speaker 5: lot more trust in them. So they've kind of been
- 30:36Speaker 5: the team that don't think anybody has talked about as
- 30:38Speaker 5: far as making a big move, And when you're playing
- 30:41Speaker 5: as well as they have, why would you want to
- 30:42Speaker 5: change things up? But did you guys have any any
- 30:45Speaker 5: names that have popped up there for me?
- 30:47Speaker 3: I for me, I look at just recently the last
- 30:50Speaker 3: few days because with what Seattle is going to do,
- 30:52Speaker 3: is Jamie alexiak Is. It's an upgrade to Logan Stanley.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I think guy that can move the puck, can play
- 30:58Speaker 3: offense up and down the lineup, big body. I think
- 31:01Speaker 3: that's kind of the archetype of what they're looking for
- 31:03Speaker 3: on that team. And that's kind of my That's where
- 31:06Speaker 3: I started leaning a little bit because to your point's
- 31:08Speaker 3: exactly right, Like you're not going to get a guy
- 31:11Speaker 3: unless you trade for him that's going to sign in
- 31:13Speaker 3: the free agency market. So you can't really you need
- 31:16Speaker 3: to get somebody that's on a contract already and that's
- 31:19Speaker 3: gonna be not that they don't have a choice to come,
- 31:22Speaker 3: but you know, are willing to come and play and
- 31:24Speaker 3: play under contract. And I feel like alexiak is kind
- 31:26Speaker 3: of one of those guys that can fill that role.
- 31:29Speaker 3: He's still kind of young as a defenseman and he
- 31:32Speaker 3: just does a lot. And you talk about shoring up
- 31:34Speaker 3: the back end, that's one of the pieces I see
- 31:36Speaker 3: out there because other than that, like on the D
- 31:38Speaker 3: side you have Rasmus Rista Linens another one. Those are
- 31:42Speaker 3: kind of the two out there. Like on the back
- 31:44Speaker 3: I just don't know in the back end.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Right, So I I Alexiak. I was gonna say Dallas
- 31:49Speaker 5: if I was Dallas. It's another he's played there, and
- 31:52Speaker 5: I actually think that's the only move that Dallas would
- 31:55Speaker 5: have to make it assuming that Sagan is coming back.
- 31:59Speaker 5: They replaced him with Granlin in the short term, who's
- 32:02Speaker 5: been awesome and is filled in great on that second line.
- 32:04Speaker 5: Like that second line is like most teams first lines,
- 32:07Speaker 5: the way that Deshane's been playing with with Marchmen and
- 32:10Speaker 5: since he's came over so.
- 32:13Speaker 4: And then Hayskaning.
- 32:15Speaker 5: If you get Hayskinning and Sagan back healthy for playoffs,
- 32:17Speaker 5: I think that Alexiak would be the only move that
- 32:20Speaker 5: they would need to make. And the reason I threw
- 32:22Speaker 5: his name at out is because he's played there, he's
- 32:24Speaker 5: familiar there, and it just ensures like I think that
- 32:28Speaker 5: we had bones on a TNT panel and he just
- 32:31Speaker 5: like man playoff time, you just need big long d
- 32:34Speaker 5: who are gonna close the playoff, advance the puck quickly
- 32:37Speaker 5: and then go north like you don't need you don't
- 32:40Speaker 5: need any type of flash, and you just need these
- 32:42Speaker 5: big bodies who are gonna take up space, protect the
- 32:44Speaker 5: that front and that's all that's really all you need
- 32:47Speaker 5: so interested to see what where Alexiak ends up going.
- 32:51Speaker 5: And at this point, Seattle, you might as well trade
- 32:53Speaker 5: trade off.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll see what happens with the deadline come up
- 32:57Speaker 2: on Friday. Let's get into a little bit of your
- 32:58Speaker 2: journey as well.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Biz.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Listen, love watching a turn one.
- 33:00Speaker 1: You guys a phenomenal chemistry with those guys and always
- 33:03Speaker 1: so funny and quick and intelligent as well. And I
- 33:06Speaker 1: mean the fact that you're with Wayne Gretzy and gretz
- 33:08Speaker 1: is taking a bit of a hit back home or Trump.
- 33:11Speaker 1: But listen as a player, as a citizen, obviously, it
- 33:14Speaker 1: has done a lot for Canada. What is it like
- 33:15Speaker 1: for you just hanging out with Wayne Gretzky every week?
- 33:18Speaker 5: Well, I appreciate the comments. It's been a whirldwin obviously
- 33:21Speaker 5: getting to hang out with the goat. Yeah, I mean
- 33:24Speaker 5: he was the one. Tie and Trevor are his sons,
- 33:27Speaker 5: and I used to hang out with them when when
- 33:29Speaker 5: I was playing in Arizona because they were living at
- 33:31Speaker 5: his house. He was the head coach the year before
- 33:33Speaker 5: I got there and he didn't sell so they were
- 33:35Speaker 5: going to ASU. So became very close with them, and
- 33:39Speaker 5: when the job came up for him. They recommended, hey,
- 33:41Speaker 5: why don't you guys have biz try out and tried out,
- 33:44Speaker 5: and you know, obviously the rest is history.
- 33:46Speaker 4: And just just.
- 33:47Speaker 5: Like JD, you would know, like once you're done playing,
- 33:50Speaker 5: you're just looking for any type of purpose and and
- 33:53Speaker 5: you know, fortunately enough, I started Twitter a long time ago,
- 33:56Speaker 5: and that kind of helped segue into the media world
- 33:59Speaker 5: even while I was playing. I mean geez, at the time,
- 34:02Speaker 5: I was probably doing more of that than actually playing.
- 34:05Speaker 5: So it was, you know, the perfect transition. And as
- 34:08Speaker 5: JD's doing now radio for the San Jose Sharks, I
- 34:11Speaker 5: did so for the Phoenix Coyotes and JD was actually
- 34:14Speaker 5: there when I when I moved over.
- 34:16Speaker 3: We well, we did tell him, I mean, this is
- 34:20Speaker 3: this is what I wanted to chat about with you too,
- 34:22Speaker 3: is because you know, I commend you on what you've
- 34:24Speaker 3: done and what you've built. And I remember seeing it
- 34:27Speaker 3: being in Arizona because we used to see I see
- 34:29Speaker 3: you running around on our practice days and guys like,
- 34:32Speaker 3: what the hell's is doing right now?
- 34:34Speaker 4: Now?
- 34:35Speaker 3: You know, you're like, what kind of segment is this
- 34:37Speaker 3: guy trying to do? And I wanted to ask, like
- 34:39Speaker 3: we did Bachelor segments together we did you did the
- 34:42Speaker 3: pillow talk. You were unreal in the Bachelor segments with
- 34:46Speaker 3: the type I didn't want. But I mean for someone
- 34:49Speaker 3: who didn't watch it, you would have thought he knew
- 34:50Speaker 3: the whole whole show. We'll tell because we had a
- 34:55Speaker 3: we had we had like five guys on the team
- 34:57Speaker 3: that were actively watching The Bachelor, and he was coming
- 35:00Speaker 3: in and interviewing us, and like it was like if
- 35:03Speaker 3: we'd done it now, it would it had gone viral
- 35:06Speaker 3: for sure, But it was like so incredible, Like breaking
- 35:09Speaker 3: that down, But are those things that you wrote and
- 35:11Speaker 3: like came up with yourself and just you know, Arizona
- 35:14Speaker 3: kind of kind of provided you with the canvas to
- 35:16Speaker 3: paint that picture.
- 35:17Speaker 4: No, I can't take full credit.
- 35:19Speaker 5: Rich Nareon was awesome and had a lot of good
- 35:21Speaker 5: ideas when he was running everything with the Arizona Coyotes.
- 35:25Speaker 5: And he's not obviously he's not with him any longer,
- 35:27Speaker 5: but he was. You know, they they parted ways, and
- 35:30Speaker 5: I really think he got the short end of the stick.
- 35:31Speaker 5: So I wouldn't be surprised if another team scooped him
- 35:34Speaker 5: up just because of all the awesome ideas he has
- 35:37Speaker 5: all the relationships he's built over his you know, twenty
- 35:40Speaker 5: twenty five years and doing what he did in hockey.
- 35:43Speaker 5: But he thought of the Bachelor report.
- 35:46Speaker 4: He thought of what was the other one? We would
- 35:49Speaker 4: do pillow talk with Tyson.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Nash talk about that.
- 35:52Speaker 4: That was but the.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Problem so we would We ran out of stories quick
- 35:55Speaker 5: because of how PG how PG.
- 35:57Speaker 4: We had to keep it. We I mean, we had.
- 35:59Speaker 5: About thirty forty stories that we wanted to tell doing
- 36:01Speaker 5: pillow talk, but they're like, uh and I think that
- 36:05Speaker 5: the climate at that time was a little bit more sensitive,
- 36:09Speaker 5: especially as we kind of got towards COVID then it
- 36:11Speaker 5: really got sensitive where I mean now if you watch SNL,
- 36:15Speaker 5: it went completely the other way, right. You got Shane
- 36:17Speaker 5: Gillis in the mix, and you know, everybody's everybody's taking
- 36:20Speaker 5: them as jokes a lot more now.
- 36:22Speaker 4: So uh, yeah, we were.
- 36:23Speaker 5: We had a blast doing all that stuff early days
- 36:25Speaker 5: with the coyotes along with Tyson Nash, and that was
- 36:29Speaker 5: a big reason. It was able to to kind of
- 36:31Speaker 5: propel and that and get more comfortable in front of
- 36:33Speaker 5: the camera and get my reps in. So it was
- 36:36Speaker 5: it was a good time and I'll never forget it
- 36:39Speaker 5: and forever grateful to the Coyotes organization.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Well, it's a great point you make, Biz, because it's
- 36:44Speaker 1: a lot harder than people think when they ask you
- 36:46Speaker 1: to be candid, be outspoken, be authentic.
- 36:48Speaker 2: These are all words that TV executives use.
- 36:50Speaker 1: And yet if you truly are going to be as
- 36:52Speaker 1: you said, you're just travling that.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Lianel A the time.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Yeah, a meeting every week fired. This is the question.
- 36:57Speaker 1: We don't know what's the I want to see the
- 36:59Speaker 1: closest came eeting fired? But what was a comment that
- 37:01Speaker 1: you said that they're like, eh, biz, next time, maybe
- 37:03Speaker 1: refrained from that.
- 37:05Speaker 5: Oh man, there was a lot I called in a
- 37:07Speaker 5: decent amount in my first year, first year and a
- 37:09Speaker 5: half with T and T, and uh yeah, I was
- 37:12Speaker 5: just like okay, like sorry, like you know, like I
- 37:14Speaker 5: don't really know what to say, Like I'm just kind
- 37:16Speaker 5: of an idiot, and I'll just kind of say what
- 37:18Speaker 5: I'm thinking. So that's kind of how I was on
- 37:21Speaker 5: the podcast and still am obviously because Barstool doesn't give
- 37:24Speaker 5: a shit. Uh So yeah, I just uh, I can't
- 37:27Speaker 5: remember anything in particular. I did obviously get some calls
- 37:32Speaker 5: with the babcock stuff where they were like, hey, like
- 37:34Speaker 5: what's going on here? And I'm like, listen, I go.
- 37:37Speaker 5: I've had players reach out. I'm talking on behalf of
- 37:39Speaker 5: the players. I understand if you have to let me go,
- 37:42Speaker 5: but this is what I'm hearing. And I'm sticking to
- 37:44Speaker 5: my guns. And they road they stuck by me, and
- 37:47Speaker 5: I'm forever grateful. And uh, that was probably the most
- 37:50Speaker 5: chaos that we went through in like a week, week
- 37:54Speaker 5: and a half. Columbus should be thanking me. They got
- 37:57Speaker 5: their guy. Now, they got Dean evitson there. They're they're
- 38:00Speaker 5: a wagon. Now they're scary to watch man. They're a
- 38:03Speaker 5: hell of a team. No more babcock, see you later. Yeah,
- 38:07Speaker 5: the side, what was that? I want to ask you before?
- 38:10Speaker 5: What was that audition? Like, do you remember your audition
- 38:12Speaker 5: for TNT.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:14Speaker 5: I went in and it was Liam and Ace and
- 38:16Speaker 5: we just they kind of just were throwing softballs and
- 38:19Speaker 5: you know, you just kind of do your thing and
- 38:21Speaker 5: you leave and you don't know. I thought it was
- 38:23Speaker 5: a joke when I got the email to go for
- 38:25Speaker 5: the audition, I thought it was we got a prankster.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Foley is one of Yan's and wits buddies from Boston,
- 38:32Speaker 5: so he's really good about pranking players.
- 38:34Speaker 4: Like when Yan's was playing in Florida, he.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Was texting X Flat acting as the team chef, and
- 38:42Speaker 5: that he was going to come over and cook this
- 38:44Speaker 5: meal for like twelve of the guys, like six players
- 38:47Speaker 5: are excuse me, six of the guys and their spouses,
- 38:50Speaker 5: So everybody obviously was in on it other than X flat.
- 38:55Speaker 5: And he's calling and canceling this whole like you know,
- 39:00Speaker 5: steak lobster dinner as he's hosting it at his house
- 39:03Speaker 5: and X flat it's freaking out. So this prankster guy
- 39:06Speaker 5: is notorious for messing with the players, So when I
- 39:09Speaker 5: got the email, I was I was like, okay, this
- 39:11Speaker 5: is Folds for sure messing with me. And then obviously
- 39:14Speaker 5: it ended up being true, so uh uh so yeah,
- 39:18Speaker 5: I don't know how I got into the full story,
- 39:19Speaker 5: but basically he's a prankster and it was the real deal,
- 39:23Speaker 5: and I went for the tryout and it all worked out.
- 39:26Speaker 2: You played a few years with the Ilia priest Gallop.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Speaking of characters, give me your best Brieze story.
- 39:32Speaker 5: Breeze was just uh, I mean, I he was just quirky.
- 39:38Speaker 5: He was just so I think one time he like
- 39:41Speaker 5: he like had like a little cold and he just
- 39:44Speaker 5: like left the road trip and he like went home
- 39:46Speaker 5: because because he wanted to be with his dog while
- 39:49Speaker 5: he had the sniff. Also, I mean, he was unbelievable
- 39:52Speaker 5: for us, so nobody was gonna say anything and then
- 39:53Speaker 5: he just left. I remember this one time he had
- 39:55Speaker 5: this big ass blue sweater. It was huge, it was
- 39:59Speaker 5: like a triple xcel and it was a Kashmere and
- 40:03Speaker 5: I think that some of the guys ripping on a
- 40:04Speaker 5: little bit, and it was he's like five thousand bucks
- 40:07Speaker 5: he spent. He spent five thousand dollars on this blue
- 40:11Speaker 5: blanket Kashmir blanket that he was wearing. I remember that one.
- 40:16Speaker 5: But he was just it wasn't so much like one scenario.
- 40:20Speaker 5: It was just a shit that would come out of
- 40:21Speaker 5: his mouth, like from like pregame meals. He'd be talking.
- 40:25Speaker 5: Sometimes he would be sitting by himself because guys were
- 40:27Speaker 5: just like, hey, I want to think about the game,
- 40:29Speaker 5: and I have to worry about what Bridge is trying
- 40:31Speaker 5: to melt my skull with right now. So it was
- 40:33Speaker 5: just more about the quirkiness that everybody ended up seeing
- 40:36Speaker 5: when they had him behind the scenes with with Philadelphia
- 40:39Speaker 5: when he moved over, but nothing really in particular.
- 40:44Speaker 3: You tweeted a couple of days ago some close to
- 40:48Speaker 3: my heart in the WWE realm, and you know, I
- 40:53Speaker 3: was I'm putting in my early ballot for you to
- 40:56Speaker 3: be either your sidekick, because I know I know Wit
- 41:00Speaker 3: will be. He's he's like the Paul Haymon hype, like
- 41:04Speaker 3: he's the guy to come out, you know, mister Fuji
- 41:06Speaker 3: and the has I played with him and he's not
- 41:09Speaker 3: taking any bumps or anything like that. He's probably Yeah,
- 41:12Speaker 3: he's in the background hit somebody with a chair. I'd
- 41:14Speaker 3: be the guy to go out on the store. I'd
- 41:15Speaker 3: be the I'd be the Dudley, the smallest of the
- 41:18Speaker 3: deadly bros.
- 41:19Speaker 5: For you, okay to go go team, So maybe we'll
- 41:22Speaker 5: take on the Yeah we.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Could, yes, and I would, uh you know, I'd be
- 41:26Speaker 3: wrestlings close to my heart and and uh you said that,
- 41:29Speaker 3: and I was like, oh, man.
- 41:30Speaker 5: I think it would be a perfect time to do
- 41:33Speaker 5: it because I think that I forget who the wrestler was.
- 41:36Speaker 5: But he brought out a hockey stick and then Pat
- 41:37Speaker 5: McAfee's like, oh, he's he's conning me, David. And then
- 41:40Speaker 5: he's like, oh he's he's biting him in the forehead,
- 41:42Speaker 5: like bits of that, and he made a comment. So
- 41:44Speaker 5: I ended up getting posted online and I said I
- 41:46Speaker 5: would love to jump in the ring. I think now
- 41:48Speaker 5: it would be the perfect time to turn heel and
- 41:51Speaker 5: wear like a a Canadian flag onesie and get on
- 41:55Speaker 5: the mic and all these small town America places and
- 41:58Speaker 5: just rip on start going after Trump.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Terrific.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Yeah, Canadian, we, I mean we. He did curtain a
- 42:05Speaker 3: distraction at ASU.
- 42:06Speaker 5: That's right, That's right. We did do that together. We
- 42:10Speaker 5: had the little the wrestling outfits on. I was asking
- 42:13Speaker 5: him if I could get like a jock, just to
- 42:15Speaker 5: get me a little bit more bulge, like help out
- 42:17Speaker 5: with the with the angles for crying out loud. I
- 42:19Speaker 5: basically soured myself by doing that.
- 42:23Speaker 3: On a campus. So as U A SU does like
- 42:30Speaker 3: a free throw thing after the half where they every
- 42:33Speaker 3: free throw for the opposing team. They have a curtain
- 42:35Speaker 3: of distraction behind the net and people come in and
- 42:37Speaker 3: they bring in like celebrities from the area. It's coming
- 42:40Speaker 3: and you they open this curtain and you got to
- 42:42Speaker 3: get in these costumes in like five seconds and scream
- 42:45Speaker 3: so me and him, they asked us to do it,
- 42:47Speaker 3: So I'm half you know, I'm I'm sauced at this game,
- 42:51Speaker 3: like being like I'm so nervous, and then we're throwing
- 42:53Speaker 3: on We're like, he's curting me out or I've we're
- 42:55Speaker 3: curting him out on like a Hannibal lecter, like on
- 42:58Speaker 3: the gurney. He's screaming at these players, these kids. He's
- 43:01Speaker 3: asu guys, and they're the team they're playing. At the time.
- 43:04Speaker 3: I think it was the rivalry game between U of
- 43:07Speaker 3: A and we're just You're like, we're in we're in
- 43:10Speaker 3: the wrestling gimlets, the little onesies, and we're showing.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Up like in front of everybody.
- 43:14Speaker 5: We're basically court side and we're on this little podium,
- 43:17Speaker 5: and yeah, they close the curtain and then if there
- 43:19Speaker 5: is a free throw, they open up the curtain, and
- 43:22Speaker 5: then you try to distract them. I don't think we
- 43:24Speaker 5: had a good record of distracting them, but as I
- 43:27Speaker 5: said earlier, I think they were cranking the ac in there,
- 43:29Speaker 5: so not.
- 43:30Speaker 4: Really helping old busy boy out here.
- 43:32Speaker 1: All right, last one for you, Spittin Chicklets has become
- 43:35Speaker 1: such a juggernaut is it's been such a great podcast,
- 43:37Speaker 1: and again it proves that it doesn't matter of hockey
- 43:39Speaker 1: may not be a major sport in America, people of
- 43:41Speaker 1: people who are passionate and funny entertaining what's that journey
- 43:44Speaker 1: been like and seeing what a success it's been.
- 43:46Speaker 5: It's been unbelievable, and I'm just so grateful that in
- 43:49Speaker 5: my post career that I've been able to kind of
- 43:51Speaker 5: start a essentially a business with friends and evolve it
- 43:54Speaker 5: to what it's came into. And you know, there's obviously
- 43:56Speaker 5: being been like pivotal moments that have helped make it bigger,
- 44:01Speaker 5: like when we were able to get Crosby and McKinnon
- 44:03Speaker 5: and do the golf match with them. Obviously, when we
- 44:05Speaker 5: got Wayne on for the first time, We've gotten Charles
- 44:08Speaker 5: Barkley on because of the connection at TNT. So yeah,
- 44:11Speaker 5: it's it's just been fun. And it just always goes
- 44:13Speaker 5: back to the fact that you know, like it's when
- 44:17Speaker 5: I when my career ended after my NHL career, I
- 44:20Speaker 5: didn't even have a job at in the American League
- 44:22Speaker 5: at the time, and I was like on my couch
- 44:25Speaker 5: with my thumb up my hoop, not even knowing what
- 44:27Speaker 5: was next, what I was going to do. So that
- 44:29Speaker 5: really forced me to to start thinking about what I
- 44:32Speaker 5: needed to do when when it was all said and done,
- 44:35Speaker 5: and just now just grateful to have something to be
- 44:38Speaker 5: able to do and have a purpose, so grateful for
- 44:41Speaker 5: the people I get to do it with. Ra who
- 44:44Speaker 5: he's not currently with us, he's just you know, away
- 44:46Speaker 5: for a little bit to do a little bit of
- 44:48Speaker 5: a reset, but you know him Grenelly Yans all the
- 44:52Speaker 5: fish behind the scenes, Pasha. So we've kind of grown
- 44:55Speaker 5: a team of about eight nine people now and just
- 44:58Speaker 5: growing that and and and being on a team again
- 45:01Speaker 5: and staying in the locker room. That's what I missed
- 45:04Speaker 5: the most is the camaraderie, the storytelling and and I
- 45:07Speaker 5: mean that's once again going back to my actual playing ability.
- 45:10Speaker 5: That's really all I did right the ox court and
- 45:12Speaker 5: having fun in the locker room. So it's just been
- 45:14Speaker 5: awesome and just forever grateful. And I'm sure you guys
- 45:18Speaker 5: feel the same, right Like it's just fun, Like hockey's fun,
- 45:20Speaker 5: The league's thriving, and it's a great industry to be in.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's fun to just sit around and shit talk
- 45:26Speaker 3: with your buddies, and yeah, I mean, and it's it
- 45:29Speaker 3: makes it that much more sweet when you have success
- 45:33Speaker 3: doing that because you know, now you're you've been you've
- 45:35Speaker 3: been able. Now you guys are in a position you know,
- 45:37Speaker 3: you bring in yans, Now, who I want to ask?
- 45:39Speaker 3: How has he been doing? He's a great fit for
- 45:41Speaker 3: you guys. And then also like you talk to people
- 45:43Speaker 3: in the industry and you know the empty nets guy,
- 45:46Speaker 3: the empty net guys, and they all say, you guys
- 45:48Speaker 3: are if you reach out and talk to the spit
- 45:49Speaker 3: and chicklets guys, you're the first guys to help if
- 45:52Speaker 3: anybody needs any help, You're there in a in a second.
- 45:55Speaker 3: Because that's kind of how the hockey community is, which
- 45:57Speaker 3: is so great. We're all trying to build each other up.
- 45:59Speaker 5: So that like that, I appreciate that, and it's true.
- 46:02Speaker 5: Like that's the thing about like the game thriving so
- 46:05Speaker 5: much is now it's giving all these other media members
- 46:08Speaker 5: like everybody, it's like, what's the what's the term high
- 46:12Speaker 5: tide lifts all boats?
- 46:14Speaker 4: Actually, right, a little biz rendition there.
- 46:21Speaker 5: I'm brain dead, but but that's what it is. Man,
- 46:24Speaker 5: and and the more that the league's thriving, everybody gets
- 46:27Speaker 5: to get involved in the mix and and continue to
- 46:29Speaker 5: do what we love doing. So I love those empty
- 46:31Speaker 5: netters guys. What's what chaos? Those guys do the incredible
- 46:35Speaker 5: job you guys, Like, there's just so many awesome people
- 46:38Speaker 5: in media, in the hockey world and just people in
- 46:41Speaker 5: general in the hockey world. Right, that's kind of I
- 46:44Speaker 5: feel like, like, not only has the play in the
- 46:46Speaker 5: league thrived, but I think it's also shed light on
- 46:49Speaker 5: how good the people are in the hockey community and
- 46:52Speaker 5: how much we care and how much effort we put forth.
- 46:55Speaker 5: So I know, bet basketball's taking a lot of shrapnel
- 46:58Speaker 5: right now, but hey man, it's it's what you and
- 47:00Speaker 5: the and the people involved put into it that make
- 47:04Speaker 5: what's happening. So it's it's great to see. And uh,
- 47:07Speaker 5: right back at you guys as well. Congratulations on all
- 47:10Speaker 5: your success. The fact that av that you got linked
- 47:13Speaker 5: up with JD. He's an absolute character and JD to
- 47:16Speaker 5: you man, like you were always a silly guy in
- 47:18Speaker 5: the locker room, like this was the media side was
- 47:21Speaker 5: meant for you as well. Obviously you had a lot
- 47:23Speaker 5: more of a credible playing career than I did and
- 47:26Speaker 5: and didn't really well there. But as you know, once
- 47:30Speaker 5: that ends, you need to find something else than you
- 47:32Speaker 5: have and and this is a perfect fit.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Man.
- 47:35Speaker 3: No, thank you, and I mean listen, you're also the
- 47:37Speaker 3: only time that our producer, tele Ponchevski has felt cool
- 47:41Speaker 3: is because of you. So that's another big pine. He
- 47:44Speaker 3: has a story for it as well. He's been waiting
- 47:46Speaker 3: to tell it.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Tell you here we go, Here we go, get.
- 47:49Speaker 3: In there town.
- 47:50Speaker 6: I actually ran into you in Vegas at the draft
- 47:52Speaker 6: last summer BIZ and told you about this, so you
- 47:54Speaker 6: were you were in Ontario. We had met before because
- 47:57Speaker 6: I was covering the league for ESPN and I was
- 47:59Speaker 6: out with my wife and some friends at Chaconi one
- 48:02Speaker 6: night in West Hollywood and you guys had just went
- 48:06Speaker 6: a playoff series and we're partying it up over there,
- 48:08Speaker 6: and you actually did recognize me and tap me up
- 48:12Speaker 6: a little bit. And you know, my wife doesn't know
- 48:14Speaker 6: what the AHL is or the NHL or any of that.
- 48:17Speaker 6: She just saw, you know, some pro athletes, you know,
- 48:20Speaker 6: showing me a little respect in front of our friends.
- 48:23Speaker 6: And she was impressed, which which does not happen.
- 48:28Speaker 4: So for me, Chaconi's what a spot, What a spot
- 48:33Speaker 4: that is.
- 48:33Speaker 5: I remember that we'd actually just beat I want to
- 48:36Speaker 5: say we beat the Gulls, the San Diego Gulls and
- 48:43Speaker 5: the La Kings were nice enough. We asked for the card,
- 48:45Speaker 5: the team card. We end up going team party at
- 48:48Speaker 5: Chaconi's and then out to the club after. I think
- 48:51Speaker 5: the total tab was close to twenty grand. Rob Blake
- 48:55Speaker 5: wanted to kill me. He wanted to we we probably
- 49:00Speaker 5: put your guys meal on our tab. We throw it
- 49:02Speaker 5: over here, we got it, stack up those air miles.
- 49:05Speaker 5: But no, man, it's uh.
- 49:07Speaker 4: I've met a lot of amazing people along the way.
- 49:09Speaker 5: And uh and I'm glad I saw you at your
- 49:11Speaker 5: Cony's and and good to see you again and thanks.
- 49:13Speaker 4: Also for lining all this up. Man. This is uh,
- 49:15Speaker 4: this is great.
- 49:17Speaker 6: For what it's worth. For what it's worth. The waiters
- 49:20Speaker 6: thought you were the Kings. They did, they didn't know.
- 49:23Speaker 5: Oh okay, even better, that's why they were bringing over
- 49:26Speaker 5: the expensive wine list.
- 49:28Speaker 2: That's why.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Yeah, these guys can afford it.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Paulsen, that catch them spending checks of course every
- 49:34Speaker 1: week on Turner.
- 49:35Speaker 2: This was awesome, man, I can't think enough.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Obviously, you go back with JD and clearly Tal this
- 49:39Speaker 1: is our first time chatting.
- 49:40Speaker 2: I really appreciate you and always heard of great things.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Love seeing on coast to coast and any Petrello, and
- 49:43Speaker 1: most importantly, say hi to my doppelganger, Chris Chellis.
- 49:46Speaker 4: Kelly, you are Shelley.
- 49:48Speaker 5: You're the same person with that under pan and those
- 49:52Speaker 5: and those pearly whites.
- 49:54Speaker 4: And the big nose. You should you should just.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Go to Chicago and belly up at bars and just
- 49:58Speaker 5: tell people your chest.
- 50:00Speaker 1: He does in Chicago, Several people, Oh my god, mister
- 50:02Speaker 1: kelli'sn I get a picture of again.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's hysterical.
- 50:08Speaker 5: You gotta start riding the bike in the sauna too.
- 50:17Speaker 2: All right, thanks once again to business.
- 50:19Speaker 1: He was absolutely unbelievable and a guy who clearly can
- 50:21Speaker 1: see as an actor. Speaking of acting, it's time now
- 50:24Speaker 1: for Cinophile in sixty and as we break down, I'll
- 50:26Speaker 1: give you my top three winners and losers. JD of
- 50:29Speaker 1: the Academy Awards number one winners of course, Nora, we
- 50:31Speaker 1: don't need to belabor the point, but five Academy Awards
- 50:34Speaker 1: of six nominations, and Sean Baker, the first ever to
- 50:36Speaker 1: win four rosters. Again, we discussed this. You said it
- 50:39Speaker 1: was further proof that sex sells, etc. I think it's
- 50:42Speaker 1: a great film and as Talis said, marginalized communities getting
- 50:46Speaker 1: there their day in the sun. Let's get to Conan,
- 50:48Speaker 1: because I think Conan is one of the winners of
- 50:50Speaker 1: the night. I thought he was really funny. One of
- 50:51Speaker 1: my favorite jokes the night was when Flow won for
- 50:53Speaker 1: Best Animated Film. He said, this is the first ever
- 50:55Speaker 1: win for Latvia. Balls in your Court, Estonia, And then
- 50:59Speaker 1: later on first ever black Man won for costume design
- 51:02Speaker 1: and he goes, what a historic moment, balls in your court, Estonia.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Great line.
- 51:05Speaker 1: That's the kind of clever equiption you need. Good writers.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Very Letterman asked sensibility.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Love the video. Martin Scorsese CAMEO, tell them Marty sent
- 51:12Speaker 2: you was great.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Love the fact he addressed the controversy and involving Carlos
- 51:16Speaker 1: via guest callin familiar Perez the only one dropping more
- 51:18Speaker 1: f bombs in the movie. A Norris or publicist joke
- 51:21Speaker 1: at Conclave and Catholics. I thought colnhim was fabulous. And
- 51:24Speaker 1: the third biggest winner was the Brutalist winning the three
- 51:26Speaker 1: Oscars and probably should have, although we'll get the best
- 51:28Speaker 1: actor in a second. Adrian Brody wins an insufferably terrible
- 51:31Speaker 1: speech Guinness World Record for the longest speech ever, and
- 51:34Speaker 1: it was awful. He came across his arrogant when he said,
- 51:36Speaker 1: I've been here before. He's dating Harvey Weinstein's X. But
- 51:39Speaker 1: I love the wins for the score, Daniel Bloomberg and
- 51:41Speaker 1: the cinematography fantastic, So two deserved wins. The losers are
- 51:46Speaker 1: complete unknown, all these baby boomers loving it. I know
- 51:48Speaker 1: Tal liked it, Oh for eight I love James Mangle,
- 51:50Speaker 1: but it's not that good. Shouldn't won an Oscar nomination?
- 51:53Speaker 2: Was the win?
- 51:53Speaker 1: Congratulations, Sorry for timidated shallow May. He'll win an Oscar
- 51:56Speaker 1: one day, and fortunate did not get his moment. I
- 51:58Speaker 1: was curious about changing my pick on the flys. They
- 52:00Speaker 1: really do love shallow May. Sandler's playing to him, the
- 52:02Speaker 1: Colin's jokes about him. But Brody does win. The substance
- 52:04Speaker 1: also a loser one for a Shire may give me
- 52:08Speaker 1: more devastating loss. She could not hide her disappointment. Clearly
- 52:11Speaker 1: this was her Oscar, this was her moment. She tried
- 52:14Speaker 1: to smile through, but Mikey Madison twenty five year old. Essentially,
- 52:16Speaker 1: this is the plot of the Substance. An older actress
- 52:19Speaker 1: gets phased up by Negra Hotter actress, and she also
- 52:21Speaker 1: planed to strip for previously in stripteas. This is the
- 52:24Speaker 1: movie and this is happening in real life. She's devastated
- 52:26Speaker 1: and the number one biggest loser and don't cut this
- 52:29Speaker 1: towel is the Israeli government all along, no other land
- 52:32Speaker 1: has been the best winner out there. It wins Best Documentary.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Israeli Palestinian Collective. This is not a society which has
- 52:39Speaker 1: always been very pro Palestine, and yet that movie wins.
- 52:42Speaker 1: It's an Israeli Palastine collective. Vanessa redgre Back in nineteen
- 52:45Speaker 1: seventy eight minute of pro Palestine statement to not go
- 52:47Speaker 1: over well. I was so happy it won Best Documentary.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Absolutely deserved to win. You should all go see Northern Land.
- 52:52Speaker 1: This is a documentary that was not getting any distribution.
- 52:55Speaker 1: All of a sudden, you win an Academy Award, you're
- 52:57Speaker 1: gonna get distribution. It's an incredible film. I hope people
- 52:59Speaker 1: see it, and most importantly, it helped me beat David Samson.
- 53:02Speaker 2: And her head to head.
- 53:03Speaker 1: If for anybody who watched on the Lepertard Show, we
- 53:05Speaker 1: went ahead to head on our picks. I went seventeen
- 53:07Speaker 1: oh twenty three, he went fourteen. He picked the Ukraine
- 53:09Speaker 1: War Porcelain Land, which is another nomination. I said, no, buddy,
- 53:12Speaker 1: we're gonna go pro Palestine is holy government. One of
- 53:15Speaker 1: the losers of the night talk to me about Ali
- 53:17Speaker 1: and Adrian Brody.
- 53:18Speaker 3: Well the Ukraine one people soured on Zelenski, so we
- 53:22Speaker 3: you know it's what hey, But I digress. Well, no, folks,
- 53:29Speaker 3: you know, I to your point on the substance. I
- 53:31Speaker 3: wanted to say quickly that plot was freaking Oh no.
- 53:34Speaker 3: I sent you that clip of that woman talking with
- 53:37Speaker 3: me like this is the plot of the substance. We're
- 53:38Speaker 3: living in the matrix and I was like, Jesus, we are.
- 53:41Speaker 3: I'm freaked out. And then more proof of that Skynet
- 53:46Speaker 3: is here the terminator.
- 53:49Speaker 4: You know.
- 53:49Speaker 3: I looked at my wife, who's who's got her sad card,
- 53:52Speaker 3: and I said, why the hell did you guys even
- 53:55Speaker 3: do a strike? Because you're gonna go, you do a strike.
- 53:58Speaker 3: And then the the actor of the year that wins
- 54:01Speaker 3: an Oscar is a guy that had his voice modified
- 54:05Speaker 3: by AI. So the thing that you're trying to keep
- 54:08Speaker 3: out is the thing that you are now Like put
- 54:12Speaker 3: that in a context for me, like I don't even understand.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Like I heard that little nugget and I was like,
- 54:17Speaker 3: wait a minute. Timothy Shalame, who did the old school
- 54:21Speaker 3: way of it. He went out, learned how to sing,
- 54:24Speaker 3: he did all the nuanced thing, put on weight, gained weight,
- 54:26Speaker 3: did everything to learn how to be Bob Dylan. Get
- 54:29Speaker 3: into the skin of Bob Dylan. True, true, true, in
- 54:33Speaker 3: its truest acting, purest form. Does it beautifully? Did it great? Obviously?
- 54:38Speaker 3: I agree with you. The movie was good. I don't
- 54:40Speaker 3: think it was Academy Award correct winning good. But then
- 54:44Speaker 3: you go to this guy, Adrian Brody, who is insufferable
- 54:47Speaker 3: too with that speech and his wife he's dating Harvey
- 54:50Speaker 3: Wine seemed weird. And then he goes and all the
- 54:53Speaker 3: while his voice is Hungarian accent was shaped by AI.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Riddle me that congrat your former team at Mark Edward
- 55:03Speaker 1: last new NHL record twenty and sixty six career block shots,
- 55:07Speaker 1: passing Mark Giordano. NHL only began tracking block shots as
- 55:10Speaker 1: a stat no fub but still congrats your old teammate.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Give me a lastic story.
- 55:13Speaker 3: In the way out, oh Pickles was he's has not changed,
- 55:18Speaker 3: still has the same suit that he was drafted in.
- 55:20Speaker 3: He still wears it, still hoarding his nickels and his dimes,
- 55:23Speaker 3: and but just such a great attestament to him and
- 55:27Speaker 3: the way he plays. And I mean, it's funny. On
- 55:29Speaker 3: the way out, you probably be mad I'm telling this story.
- 55:31Speaker 3: But on the way out, I was like, hey, honestly,
- 55:33Speaker 3: congrats man, Like, like what an achievement. He goes and
- 55:36Speaker 3: I said, he's kind of walking with a little bit
- 55:38Speaker 3: of a hitch in his gidea up and I was like,
- 55:39Speaker 3: what's going on? And he's like one of the shots
- 55:42Speaker 3: I blocked and he's not. He's like, not the one
- 55:43Speaker 3: I won on, but he's like one after he goes,
- 55:46Speaker 3: he caught me right in the the giggly bits and
- 55:49Speaker 3: he's like, he's like, I swear to god. He's like
- 55:51Speaker 3: for a second, I thought like I was in trouble,
- 55:54Speaker 3: like like something bad really happened. And I was like,
- 55:56Speaker 3: can you imagine I look at him, I said, can
- 55:58Speaker 3: you imagine the shot block where you win the NHL
- 56:01Speaker 3: history on you. You lose one of your boys. Oh
- 56:06Speaker 3: what a Greek tragedy that would be. But you know,
- 56:09Speaker 3: Mark Duard, what a what a legend, just an incredible
- 56:12Speaker 3: guy and great player, what a you know, everything he's
- 56:16Speaker 3: done for that franchise just awesome.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Set a record, stop the puck lose a ball that
- 56:22Speaker 1: could have been the Marke Edward lastic story.
- 56:23Speaker 3: He's quote, he had the quote of the Year this
- 56:25Speaker 3: year as well. They asked him said Mark, like, how's
- 56:28Speaker 3: your back doing, because he had some back issues, and
- 56:31Speaker 3: he goes, well, it goes you know, it's just it's
- 56:33Speaker 3: so sore from carrying this franchise.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Like this was a ton of fun. Thanks it's always
- 56:42Speaker 2: to businasty man. He was awesome. I really appreciate him
- 56:45Speaker 2: and his diligence here with us and the great storytelling.
- 56:47Speaker 2: And thanks for JD. Now back in a Z and
- 56:50Speaker 2: thanks as always to all of you.
