- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 119! You know what? I'm thirsty. Lucas: Perfect timing, because today we are at a café ordering juice. Luna: Juice! I love juice. Okay, what's the basic phrase for 'I want juice'? Lucas: It's 'Nataka juisi.' Let's break it down: 'Nataka' means 'I want,' and 'juisi' is 'juice.' So, Nataka juisi. Luna: Nataka juisi. I want juice. Easy! But what if I want a specific kind? Lucas: Great question. You say 'Nataka juisi ya...' and then the fruit. For example, 'Nataka juisi ya machungwa' — orange juice. Luna: Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Machungwa is orange? Lucas: Exactly. And for mango juice, it's 'Nataka juisi ya embe.' Embe is mango. Luna: Nataka juisi ya embe. Yeah, mango juice sounds good right now. Lucas: Let's practice the question 'Where is the juice?' — 'Juisi ya embe iko wapi?' That's 'Where is the mango juice?' Luna: Juisi ya embe iko wapi? And if I want to ask the price? Lucas: You can say 'Bei gani?' which means 'How much?' Luna: So I can say 'Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Bei gani?' Lucas: Perfect! Let's run through them all. Repeat after me: Nataka juisi. Luna: Nataka juisi. Lucas: Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Luna: Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Lucas: Nataka juisi ya embe. Luna: Nataka juisi ya embe. Lucas: Juisi ya embe iko wapi? Luna: Juisi ya embe iko wapi? Lucas: Bei gani? Luna: Bei gani? Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Swahili, and you appreciate that we keep this show ad-free, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to help us keep doing what we love. No pressure though. Lucas: Right. So, back to juice. Imagine you're at a café in Dar es Salaam. You walk up and say 'Nataka juisi ya embe.' Luna: Nataka juisi ya embe. Then they ask 'Bei gani?' and I tell them... Lucas: Actually, you're the customer. You ask 'Bei gani?' first. Luna: Oh right! So I say 'Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Bei gani?' Lucas: Exactly. And they'll tell you the price. Let's practice a little dialogue. I'll be the café worker. Luna: Okay. Habari! Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Bei gani? Lucas: Shilingi elfu tatu. That's three thousand shillings. And you can say 'Sawa, asante.' Luna: Sawa, asante. So I say 'Sawa, asante' to agree and thank. Lucas: Now you try a full exchange. Pretend you want mango juice. Luna: Hujambo! Nataka juisi ya embe. Bei gani? Lucas: Shilingi elfu nne. That's four thousand. Luna: Sawa, asante. Lucas: Nailed it. Let's do one more round of repetition to lock it in. Luna: Yes, please! Lucas: Nataka juisi. Luna: Nataka juisi. Lucas: Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Luna: Nataka juisi ya machungwa. Lucas: Nataka juisi ya embe. Luna: Nataka juisi ya embe. Lucas: Juisi ya embe iko wapi? Luna: Juisi ya embe iko wapi? Lucas: Bei gani? Luna: Bei gani? Lucas: Excellent work today. Practice these phrases before your next café visit. Luna: I know I will. Asante, Lucas! Lucas: Karibu. See you next time on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Kwaheri!
