- 0:13issues. Brought to you by the
- 0:15Hypnotherapist, Demanded by celebrities, CEOs and even
- 0:18royalty Adam Cox. These recordings took place live
- 0:22from Evans Clinic in London's world famous Harley Street.
- 0:29So get yourself comfortable and enjoy today's episode of The
- 0:33Hypnotist. One of the great things about
- 0:41being a hypnotherapist is that I get to speak at some of the
- 0:46biggest hypnosis conferences in the world.
- 0:49I speak at Hypno Thoughts Live in Las Vegas.
- 0:54I speak at the UK Hypnosis Convention in London.
- 0:57I speak at the Irish Hypnosis Convention in Dublin and more
- 1:01recently I've been at the Midwest or the, sorry, the Mid
- 1:04America Hypnosis conference in Chicago.
- 1:08So I get invited to speak either in person or sometimes
- 1:11virtually. So I've spoken at the New
- 1:13Zealand Hypnosis Convention, for example, and and various other
- 1:19association of hypnosis and NLP board, I've spoken at their
- 1:24conference. So when you do that, you get to
- 1:26meet. Loads and loads.
- 1:28Of hypnotherapists, and one of the hypnotherapists that I met
- 1:33very early in my conference career was at Hypno Thoughts in
- 1:38Vegas, and it's now at the Sahara on the Strip.
- 1:43But it used to be at the Old Orleans just off the Strip, and
- 1:47they did this thing where they would have this kind of bowling
- 1:51night. Where all these?
- 1:52Hypnotherapists would get into teams, but that very first year
- 1:55I didn't know anyone so I just got matched with other
- 1:58hypnotherapists. And the guest hypnotherapist on
- 2:02today's session is a lady called Renee Brent.
- 2:06Very good, very competent hypnotherapist, but now known
- 2:10for fusing breathwork and hypnosis.
- 2:13So it's not going to be me as your hypnotherapist in this
- 2:16session. It's going to be Renee and she's
- 2:19going to be talking and we we discuss lots of things about
- 2:22breath work and hypnosis. But there is a little breath
- 2:26work example, the demonstration at the end and I think you'll
- 2:29find it very profound and very useful.
- 2:32So get yourself nice and comfortable and relaxed and
- 2:35enjoy. Hi, it's Adam here and welcome
- 2:42to the hypnotist. Now I'm not going to be your
- 2:45host hypnotist today because I'm joined by a very special guest
- 2:49hypnotist, someone I met at Hypnot Thoughts Live about four
- 2:53years ago. Renee Brent, welcome to the
- 2:55show. Thank you, Adam.
- 2:57Yes, you and I put together on a team for bowling and off we
- 3:01went. We didn't know each other.
- 3:03Actually we did pretty we we did pretty well in that.
- 3:06In bowling, I think we had some tough competitors, but we didn't
- 3:08do too bad. We we we did and and and just
- 3:11going to set the scene for everyone.
- 3:12So Hypno thoughts is now in the Sahara on on the strip.
- 3:17But four years ago, it was at the Old Orleans off the Strip,
- 3:21and there was a bowling alley like on the top floor of this,
- 3:24this kind of resort. And all the different
- 3:26hypnotherapists were kind of paired off into different teams.
- 3:29And I think there's about four or five of us.
- 3:30And we, we did pretty well. We scored, we scored well.
- 3:33I think we. Did we?
- 3:34Did we? Yeah, yeah.
- 3:36That was a lot of fun. I do like to bowling.
- 3:38I'm a sometimes an amazing bowler and sometimes a horrific
- 3:42bowler, but it averages out to about 110.
- 3:47So is my score usually. So that's not so bad because
- 3:49sometimes I just lose the plot and I just gutter ball it.
- 3:53So I. I have an interesting angry
- 3:55though about bowling because I don't know if this is mirror
- 3:57neurons or social proof, but my uncle lives in Florida and I
- 4:01visited him when I was about I think 19 or or 20 and we went to
- 4:06a bowling alley and they're in Florida, in Fort Lauderdale.
- 4:09It was just, I think it was like midweek and it was just filled
- 4:13with pensioners. Everyone's like 70 or 80 and
- 4:17they're amazing at bowling and I'm seeing strike after strike
- 4:20after strike and it is the only time in my life I've got more
- 4:23than 200 because I'm just surrounded by these kind of
- 4:27really old dudes and women as well, just getting strike after
- 4:30strike. And something rubbed off of me
- 4:32and I was just kind of getting all these incredible scores and
- 4:35I've never. Been on that's.
- 4:36Amazing. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 4:39I love Oh yes. League bowling is huge around
- 4:41here. Huge.
- 4:43I'm in I'm in Orlando and but anywhere I've been in Illinois,
- 4:47but league bowling is the deal now.
- 4:49I think sometimes it's an excuse to drink during the day,
- 4:52honestly, but they really they're really good bowlers.
- 4:56They really are. But it's a lot of fun anyway.
- 4:58I'm I'm happy to be here with you, Adam.
- 5:00Absolutely, and I'm fascinated at how hypnotherapists become
- 5:04hypnotherapists because everyone's got a bit of a back
- 5:06story. So tell us how you ended up in
- 5:09this wonderful world called hypnosis.
- 5:11So this is interesting. I been a nurse, I've been a
- 5:14registered nurse. I did ICU, trauma, ER recovery
- 5:18room. I loved being a nurse.
- 5:20I was very, very good at it. And I was trying to get pregnant
- 5:25with my third child. My other two girls were just
- 5:27like easy breezy and then I wasn't getting pregnant with my
- 5:30third child, but I knew there was a third baby waiting for me
- 5:33and I was driving my husband at the time crazy and he sent me
- 5:37away to a spa in Miami. Well there was this guy there
- 5:41who called himself the hypnotist, but I didn't know
- 5:43what that was. But I knew that I needed
- 5:45something and I did 2 sessions with him.
- 5:48This guy I didn't know. I wish I knew his name today.
- 5:51And he helped me understand in the session, the two sessions I
- 5:55did, that the mind will not let you become something you
- 5:59disagree with. The subconscious will block us.
- 6:03And my true depth of who I was didn't believe I'd be as good as
- 6:07mom to the third child as I was to the 1st 2:00, because there
- 6:10were times when I felt overwhelmed because they were 18
- 6:13months apart. And he also did some clearing,
- 6:15He did some body somatic work. I had no idea what he was doing.
- 6:19And the next month, I got pregnant with my son, who's now
- 6:2328 years old. So I really understood the power
- 6:27of the mind, but I got busy and I left it alone and I didn't
- 6:31even think about hypnosis and I would got divorced from a 20
- 6:34year marriage, which was very hard for me.
- 6:36And anybody who's been through a divorce, all your listeners will
- 6:40know this. It sets you out of your comfort
- 6:43zone, kicks you out of your nest a little bit, which is very hard
- 6:47to do, but it's so good in many ways because what that does, we
- 6:51know. And I know now because I know
- 6:53mind, body connection, it, it weakens, it lowers this critical
- 6:57factor that kind of blocks the subconscious mind.
- 7:00This is why you feel so open and raw when you're going through a
- 7:04near death experience or a diagnosis or a divorce,
- 7:07something that's very, very difficult.
- 7:10It opens you up, but now you can make change.
- 7:12And I was making incredible change.
- 7:15And I knew that there was something different than I
- 7:16wanted to do. And Long story short, I was on a
- 7:20treadmill, and I didn't even have earbuds in.
- 7:24I was training for a marathon like every divorcee does.
- 7:26You're like getting in shave. You want to, you know, really be
- 7:29athletic and youthful. And I saw a video of a
- 7:33hypnotherapist, A hypnotist who was being interviewed.
- 7:36And it was like boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 7:39Everything came together, Me in that moment, Adam.
- 7:41And they knew that that's what I was supposed to do.
- 7:43I knew I was supposed to leave nursing and do something
- 7:45different. And that day I signed up for
- 7:48school. I never looked back.
- 7:50And that was almost 14 years later and here.
- 7:52I am doing this. Incredible Mine.
- 7:54Yeah, not, not with the break up at the time, but I, I, I built
- 7:59APR agency. And you know, if you're familiar
- 8:02with icky guy, you'll, you'll know this, but it's kind of the
- 8:05four Venn diagrams. And I was kind of like, I was
- 8:07successful. I was getting paid for it and I
- 8:09was good at it, but I wasn't, I wasn't passionate about it.
- 8:12And and then I kind of asked myself the question like, what
- 8:15is it that I naturally think about naturally do and there's
- 8:18no money involved. I just do it because I, I really
- 8:20like doing it. I was like, OK, hypnosis,
- 8:22hypnotherapy and LP. And then literally the next day
- 8:25I signed up for a postgraduate kind of course.
- 8:27So it went when it hits you and, and some people will be
- 8:30listening to this thinking, yeah, I don't really feel that
- 8:33way about what they're doing. But when it hits you, when you,
- 8:36when it kind of makes sense, when the penny drops as to what
- 8:38you're meant to be doing, you can move pretty quick and you
- 8:41can go from that place of feeling quite frustrated and
- 8:44unsure to very aligned very, very quickly.
- 8:47Yeah. It doesn't mean there's not
- 8:49thoughts of of Oh no, what did I do?
- 8:51Or am I doing the right thing? That's not it.
- 8:54You will feel it in your body when it's a yes, the body will
- 8:57absolutely give you a yes. It's more open, it's more broad,
- 9:01it's lighter. A no feels very heavy and very
- 9:04dense, right? So in that moment, because I was
- 9:08so open, it just got me. And running, by the way, is very
- 9:12hypnotic, right? It's it, it, it, it sends off
- 9:16these these endorphins and all of this that just quiet down the
- 9:21body. And I was definitely in a trance
- 9:24as I was running and it just hit me and it just aligned, You
- 9:27know, when I first started taking the class, the instructor
- 9:31of the school is a 500 hour course.
- 9:33And so it was all through the basics and then to metaphysical.
- 9:37And he talked about Dharma, right?
- 9:39And I just kind of roll my eyes because at that point I was very
- 9:42close heart. I was very science based, right?
- 9:46And I tell me a word like Dharma and I'm going to roll my eyes at
- 9:50you, right? And I think about that so often
- 9:54now because I truly am in my Dharma and Darba just means that
- 9:58you're aligned to your passion, what you want to do and and
- 10:03you're you're actually doing it. And I get a front row seat.
- 10:06And I know you, you know, you do your stuff online.
- 10:08I do have in my office here and I do online, but I get a front,
- 10:12we get a front row seat to people understanding and
- 10:15clearing and releasing and what I call becoming the boss of the
- 10:19subconscious mind. When we're not in the building,
- 10:22when we're not in our body and our subconscious mind, our
- 10:26automation is running, running the factory.
- 10:29So we got to get in the building.
- 10:30No, no boss would never. That was really bad English as
- 10:35as an American, someone who owns a company would always be in the
- 10:40building to make sure that things are running as they want
- 10:44is fluid for the success of the company.
- 10:47Some people don't even do that. They don't, they don't, they
- 10:49never drop into their body to say, hey, I'm here.
- 10:53This is how I want to do that. Thanks, but no thanks.
- 10:55We're doing it this way now. So being a boss is really
- 10:58important. And I love doing, I love, love
- 11:00doing what I do. It's it's a real honor.
- 11:03Yeah, it's it's having that hybrid between manual and
- 11:05autopilot. And you don't want to be kind of
- 11:07fully present with everything because when people talk about
- 11:10mindfulness, it's kind of like, OK, if I'm tying my shoelaces or
- 11:14if I'm just kind of brushing my teeth, I don't need to be
- 11:16mindful when I do that. I want that to be on autopilot.
- 11:19But there's some things, you know, that might be pleasurable
- 11:23or might be big decisions that you're making, you want to be
- 11:26fully present and you don't want to just go on autopilot for
- 11:28those things because this is how a lot of people get manipulated.
- 11:32And, and I people think that you see people in a trance on a
- 11:35stage, hypnosis show or in a therapy room.
- 11:38I see people in a trance on, on the London Underground all the
- 11:41time staring into their phones. I see people queuing up in a
- 11:44checket in a supermarket. They're in a deep trance.
- 11:46And when you're in a trance and you see that, that chocolate
- 11:49bar, you know, that's, that's a program running, that's a post
- 11:52hypnotic suggestion. So it can be quite dangerous to
- 11:55kind of be on that autopilot too much because other people are
- 11:58making decisions for you. It is.
- 12:00There's a difference between being on autopilot and being in
- 12:03trance state and being the observer of yourself in your
- 12:07life, right? Because if I'm in a trance and
- 12:09I'm just chilling out at the let's say I'm in line and I look
- 12:13at all the candy, I, it's interesting because I'm the
- 12:16observer of what they're, what the magazines have on in the
- 12:20United States magazine. We have everything for sale
- 12:22there. It's all designed to get our
- 12:24attention and someone who knows about programming right and
- 12:27suggestions. It fascinates me.
- 12:29The colors, the font, the, the pictures, all of it is designed
- 12:34to manipulate us into grabbing it and putting it down and, and
- 12:38spending our money. So it just fascinates me.
- 12:40But when you can be the observer and then become the boss, right?
- 12:44And make things conscious for a while and be the observer, like
- 12:48being on the side of a riverbank versus being in the, in the, in
- 12:51the flow, right? There's a difference between
- 12:54survival and being the observer. When you can do that now you
- 12:57could see what you want to change, what you want to keep.
- 13:00And then after that, now it becomes automation of what you
- 13:04want. When I had to tell you, when I
- 13:06learned to open my heart through a lot of hard work, you have to
- 13:08do your work. I had to go in.
- 13:10I had to be in the building, so to speak, with my subconscious
- 13:13mind. The first thing my instructor
- 13:15said to me was we can only take people as far as we are in this
- 13:20work. And I was like a oh, crap moment
- 13:23because I was like, Ah, I don't feel very far, you know, And I
- 13:27was just starting on my journey of healing, to be honest.
- 13:30So I got right into my own sessions in hypnotherapy and,
- 13:33and my own breath work stuff. And I, I really understood that
- 13:37I had to. And I still do my own work.
- 13:39I still do when I feel like I'm stuck or another layers coming
- 13:43up, then I will do ayahuasca or plant medicine or breath work or
- 13:48something like this for myself. Because when when we think our
- 13:52healing is done, that's when the ego has stepped in, in my
- 13:55opinion. Yeah.
- 13:57And and it's almost like a little bit of when complacency
- 14:02kicks in, it's got an ace up its sleeve.
- 14:04It'll play a trick on you. It'll kind of test you a little
- 14:07bit just to kind of see, see how much more work you've you've got
- 14:10to do. So being humble, I think is is
- 14:13quite a useful, you know, kind of quality in that sense.
- 14:16When we met in in Chicago at the Mid America conference, I didn't
- 14:20realize that breath work is is such an area that you kind of
- 14:24specialized in. How did you how did you get into
- 14:26that area? So hypnotic therapeutic breath
- 14:30work. The school that I went to is the
- 14:33only school that really trains in breath work as part of its
- 14:36clinical package. It's 100 hours of clinical work.
- 14:38Why? Because the breath really kind
- 14:40of clears. I found myself personally
- 14:45because I was such a had such a closed heart, lot of trauma when
- 14:49I was young, lot of drug addiction.
- 14:51I have two siblings that died at 52, both of them from drug and
- 14:54alcohol. Mother and father, both
- 14:57Alcoholics big and I. So I understand addiction.
- 15:00I'm there. And I as a sister who's been
- 15:01clean for 40 years and another brother I have 6/5 of 6/1 who
- 15:06has never drank ever. He just won't do it.
- 15:09And I somewhere landed in this kind of moderation kind of
- 15:13awareness and I have a lot of, I have a lot of gratitude for
- 15:16that. And so but what I did to manage
- 15:19my life, I thought chemistry and you just push it down.
- 15:23That's what happens. Every thought creates chemistry.
- 15:26And then we can't have time to feel it or even have any energy
- 15:30for it to stay safe. It all went in my physical body,
- 15:33Adam. So for me, breath work was the
- 15:35only way through my very analytical science based mind to
- 15:39breakthrough because once you're once after my divorce after
- 15:43about nine months, then that critical factor, right, the
- 15:47default modes really, you know, gears up again.
- 15:50So I needed something that was going to release that and and
- 15:53slow that down for me. And breath work was what did it
- 15:56for me. So I've done a lot of breath
- 15:58personally and then I started studying all kinds of breath
- 16:01work and I understood what I learned was great, but I wanted
- 16:06to do it a little bit more and combine more hypnosis and breath
- 16:11work. Because when you breathe
- 16:13rhythmically, it's closest to, I would say a transformational
- 16:18breath work. It's a cyclical breath.
- 16:20Inhale and stop at the top or bottom.
- 16:22It's not holotropic. Holotropic is a little bit more
- 16:25chaotic and energy based. This is fully therapeutic and
- 16:29when I started leading my clients through that who were
- 16:31like me, right? We get we get who we are right
- 16:35and who were locked in history of addiction or family of
- 16:39addiction, a very analytical. I needed a way I needed
- 16:43something traditional hypnosis wasn't going to do it.
- 16:45It was it wasn't getting in there.
- 16:47They were just too guarded and I started doing breath work and
- 16:51then it just, I would see these people open up and I understood
- 16:57that's something as I've been going through in the last, you
- 16:59know, almost 14 years in the hypno world, I realized that
- 17:03there, there aren't many people doing it in their practice.
- 17:06And I think we're missing a really powerful technique.
- 17:09So I started putting it all together in my own kind of
- 17:13package of what it is hypnotic therapeutic breath work.
- 17:16And the last thing I want to do really, my life is amazing is
- 17:20start working harder. But I realized that I had to get
- 17:22out there and I had to train people.
- 17:23And that's what that's what I do now is really kind of focus.
- 17:27I do a lot of other kind of hypnosis in my practice, but
- 17:30combining hypnosis and breath work in this way is just so, so
- 17:34healing. It quiets the nervous system.
- 17:36It releases somatic stuck energy, which I had.
- 17:39And you people feel lighter. It's pretty incredible protocol.
- 17:44Have you ever done breath work like cyclical for like an hour?
- 17:48I, I have, and where I came across it because why I'm a
- 17:51therapist is I had severe social anxiety and, and probably, you
- 17:56know, quite, quite high level depression when I was like 19.
- 17:59And I came across this kind of pranayama, this kind of like
- 18:05almost kind of ratio breathing. And before I could get an app, I
- 18:11remember because I'm quite a techie nerd, I kind of had this
- 18:15audio editing and I just recorded breathe in and then I
- 18:18had silence and then I had hold and then silence and then
- 18:23breathe out and then, and then hold.
- 18:25And then I had all these different variations of
- 18:27different lengths. And I'm really, and, and this
- 18:30was, I was around 19 or, or 20. I was really grateful because I
- 18:33would do it for such a long period of time and I could get
- 18:36it to like breathe for an hour on one breath per minute.
- 18:40And, and I had no idea that I was really kind of building lung
- 18:44capacity and, and, and teaching myself to kind of breathe from
- 18:47the diaphragm. So, you know, people compliment
- 18:50me on my voice now, but I think it, it all came from learning to
- 18:53breathe from the diaphragm and, and, and, and having that
- 18:57ability to kind of project the voice because before then I was
- 19:00very, very shy, very introverted, always mumbling my
- 19:03words. And it kind of, it unlocked
- 19:05something. But I remember an early time of
- 19:06doing that. It was like 2025 minutes of
- 19:10these kind of very, kind of like strict ratios and, and like one
- 19:15breath per minute. And I remember just like
- 19:17bursting into tears. And it's like, where's this
- 19:19coming from? Like this has nothing to do with
- 19:21breathing. Like this is meant to be
- 19:23powering my lymphatic system and all this kind of stuff.
- 19:25And it was just, where did that come from?
- 19:27What's this thing? Emotion?
- 19:28What are the tears? Yeah, and it, and it dawned on
- 19:30me like you said, like I think the the English are quite well
- 19:34known for kind of like you sweep it under the carpet, you you
- 19:37bury it deep, you don't bring it up.
- 19:38But if you if you do that, you know, it's got to find its way
- 19:42out. And I think a lot of people that
- 19:44get into addiction and, you know, and, and destructive
- 19:47behaviours, they're trying to deal with the thing that's
- 19:50unresolved, you know, down believe.
- 19:52But if you, if you let it out, there's less things that you
- 19:55need to kind of do. And and so I accidentally kind
- 19:58of came across breath work, but it, it was, it was kind of very,
- 20:02very powerful and very useful for me.
- 20:04It is incredible and I love doing it one-on-one.
- 20:06I do do it with groups, but I love doing one-on-one because I
- 20:09do work with people who've done other forms of breath work.
- 20:12This is a cyclical hyperoxygenating and but when
- 20:15they're with me one-on-one now those motions, they flow, they
- 20:21flow out. Because what happens when
- 20:24there's a vibration that starts at about 15 minutes and when
- 20:27that vibration start, all that energy hits the muscles and any
- 20:32energy that's stuck in there starts vibrating out and starts
- 20:35moving. I like to say it's like a
- 20:37spatula under a stuck egg. And that energy that you didn't
- 20:41know that you were holding on from a car accident when you
- 20:45were 18 and your friend got hurt or your parents got divorced or
- 20:50whatever it is, that energy is in our physical body, right?
- 20:53And that's science. I come, I do come from a science
- 20:56perspective. Still.
- 20:57I tell people I'm not woo woo, I'm woo.
- 21:00I live in both worlds. I live in the science and I
- 21:03can't sit in the chair for this many years and and it's
- 21:07evidential. The metaphysical at this point
- 21:09is evidential. I see the energy releasing.
- 21:11I see people change in front of my very eyes.
- 21:14So there's a lot that shows up in in my room that I believe.
- 21:17But that energy starts moving and it clears and it leaves the
- 21:21fingers, it leaves the toes and it quiets down the nervous
- 21:24system and it opens up our vagal nerve.
- 21:27It's just the, the insight that people get and what I call the
- 21:32magic of the in between, right? When people can get to that
- 21:36point, they release and the inside is pretty profound.
- 21:40And I find that I really like to do one-on-one with clients
- 21:43because it gives them the opportunity to release.
- 21:46They laugh, they cry, they # a pillow, all of these things show
- 21:50up and they sometimes don't even know what it was that they
- 21:54released. And that's OK That's OK.
- 21:57Because when you pull that route now, people feel lighter.
- 22:00They can't even find the issue that they came in.
- 22:02And it's always an honor when people really allow.
- 22:06I, I laugh when people apologize for crying.
- 22:09By the way, listeners do never apologize for crying.
- 22:12Please, please, please never apologize for crying because
- 22:15it's important. It's important.
- 22:16It's our bodies. There's nothing in our physical
- 22:19body that's not designed. It's all really high end real
- 22:23estate. Right, it has a function.
- 22:25It has a. Function.
- 22:26And I remember the yeah. Do you remember the first Inside
- 22:30Out movie, the, the Pixar movie? You know that that kind of that
- 22:34hits you because it's what 1 is a great metaphor for parts
- 22:38therapy and and control room of the mind.
- 22:41But secondly, it's like sadness has a function, you know, and it
- 22:45is that cathartic release, you know, and it is the kind of,
- 22:48it's almost kind of like it kind of clears the decks and you can
- 22:51kind of recalibrate. And I think a lot of people,
- 22:54more often men, I think, than than women, it's kind of like, I
- 22:57know I could never do that. But actually like, if you need
- 23:00to like, why not? Like that would be a very, very
- 23:03kind of apparel, you know, empowering thing.
- 23:06But for me, it's kind of weird that more hypnotherapists don't
- 23:09embrace breathwork, because how often does a hypnotherapy
- 23:14session start with Take a deep breath in, you know it's.
- 23:17Yes, the breath. It's, it's intuitive with this
- 23:20is somehow to do with breathing. Breathe in relaxation, breathe
- 23:23out tension. There's this element of slowing
- 23:26down the breathing, activating the parasympathetic nervous
- 23:28system. So it should be, you know, a
- 23:31tool in the tool kit for every hypnotherapist to learn more
- 23:34about this. It absolutely should.
- 23:35It's why I'm out there. What I found, which was
- 23:38fascinating to me because it's always just been part of my
- 23:41hypnosis career because I learned it in school and I'm an
- 23:45instructor for that school for the last 13 years.
- 23:47So I've taught it and I've done it right.
- 23:51So I never understood there is a belief system within the hypno
- 23:56community that it's meant for yogi's to do, it's meant for
- 24:01people who are to do the breath work.
- 24:03Those are the people who should doing breath work and we
- 24:05shouldn't be doing it. But I fundamentally disagree.
- 24:09Why? Because hypnotist, we already
- 24:11have the training, we have the protocol.
- 24:14I am completely confident that whatever comes up with someone,
- 24:18maybe it be a memory, maybe it be an attachment, maybe it be a
- 24:22part, whatever's going to show up for someone, an emotional
- 24:26state, I got the tools right. This is why I'm so I'm so
- 24:31excited to share it with people and hypnotist and and the
- 24:34hypnotherapy community, because we're set up to do it right and
- 24:39group breath work. People let loose and if you
- 24:42don't have somebody that's there to be able to manage, it can be
- 24:46a little re traumatizing, to be honest.
- 24:48So so you have to be ready for anything and you have to take it
- 24:52very seriously. When I do it, I have to be
- 24:54completely present to my clients when we're doing breath work.
- 24:57But man is incredible modality. It really is in all aspects
- 25:01somatic. It's really neuro somatic
- 25:04healing. It really is and and and it
- 25:07doesn't even have to be content driven, which is beautiful
- 25:10sometimes because I have people like, I feel crappy.
- 25:12How do you want to feel? I don't want to feel crappy
- 25:14anymore. That's all they got for me
- 25:16personally. If I cried, it was weakness and
- 25:20I had experiences. If I cried, then I was weak.
- 25:23So I learned very quickly to turn that off because it wasn't
- 25:25safe, right? So to feel safe and, and, and to
- 25:29be able to allow emotion is such an incredible freeing
- 25:33experience, but also so, so healing.
- 25:36You don't want your body to hold on to that.
- 25:38Why not let it go? Why not let it go?
- 25:41And. One of the, I would say
- 25:43ambassadors of breath work in the last, you know, decade or
- 25:46so, there's probably been Wim Hof, who, you know, is kind of
- 25:51known for, you know, pretty incredible feats, almost like
- 25:54some would say superhuman feats, you know, kind of going up to,
- 25:59you know, top of Everest, you know, without any clothes on
- 26:01and, you know, swimming in, in kind of freezing cold rivers
- 26:06and, and all of this kind of stuff.
- 26:07And he attributes a lot of that to, to breath and, and kind of
- 26:12almost stimulating, you know, certain kind of features within
- 26:16his body. What's your thoughts on his
- 26:18approach to breath work and, and what hypnotherapist might take?
- 26:22Because I think the, the, the kind of, the adventure community
- 26:26has kind of embraced that. And the kind of, you know, the,
- 26:29the, the kind of people that are up for the grind, 4:00 AM wake
- 26:33ups, you know, cold plunges have really embraced that.
- 26:35Do you think it kind of it works with the the hypnotherapy
- 26:39community? So Wimhoff is interesting, by
- 26:42the way, Wimhoff only started training because he just was
- 26:46bombarded so often by people wanting to know what he did.
- 26:49And the, the Wimhoff breath is different than the than the
- 26:53cyclical breath that I do. But it does have a place for
- 26:56sure. And some people really resonate
- 26:59with Wimhoff that. But that's holds and breathing
- 27:02and holds and breathing. What he's doing is really
- 27:04definitely down grading the default mode.
- 27:07He can do those things. He can jump into a freezing
- 27:09river or hike barefoot, you know, in the mountain.
- 27:12Why? Because most people can.
- 27:15But the, the, that fear factor that, that default mode that
- 27:19says, no, this is not safe. You are going to die if you do
- 27:24this takes over. And then you're very primal and
- 27:27nothing is helping The, the breath bypasses that.
- 27:30And now you can get to the state and train to do that, which is
- 27:33beautiful. It's a, it has a different
- 27:36access. So what I do with Brett, when I
- 27:37have a breath work client, I will tell them there's two
- 27:40things that you can do and I want you to see which one works
- 27:43best for you. You can do 5 minutes of the
- 27:45cyclical breath. And that will, if I need energy
- 27:48during the day, let's say, and I don't and I don't want to energy
- 27:51drink so speak, I will do, I will do a few minutes of breath
- 27:55work because it just stimulates everything, but it clears and it
- 28:00opens up and it quiets down the nervous system.
- 28:02So my anxiety clients are doing 5 minutes of this breath on
- 28:04their own. It's a little hard to do it more
- 28:06than that. But I also have them go find
- 28:08someone doing Wim Hof. There are a lot of people doing
- 28:11Wim Hof. There's a lot of videos doing
- 28:12it. You got to just make sure that
- 28:14you resonate with the person that's teaching you how to do
- 28:16it. I suggest people in the
- 28:18beginning watch a video because it's easier to follow and people
- 28:22are visual and innately so. Watch a video and see which one
- 28:27resonates with you more. Wim Hof or this kind of breath
- 28:30or find a breath in general that works for you.
- 28:33Right? I do this as a therapeutic
- 28:35setting. I do do it in groups as well,
- 28:37but for everyday use I would say you have to find your own
- 28:41breath. But most people clench their jaw
- 28:45and hold their breath. This is who we do what we do to
- 28:48suppress their experiences, our emotion.
- 28:51And we clench our jaw. When we clench our jaw and hold
- 28:55our breath, we're, we're squeezing on the vagal nerve
- 28:58that runs from our, our, our spine.
- 29:01It's a, it's a cranial nerve 10 to our heart and our gut.
- 29:05So when we clench our breath and hold our breath, you're
- 29:07squeezing on the vagal nerve and you're sending a message, fight
- 29:10or flight, we're in danger, danger, danger.
- 29:13So you're pushing on the gas pedal for this anxiety, this
- 29:16fear based, and I have to always say this every podcast or TV
- 29:20show I do, anxiety is not an emotion.
- 29:24Anxiety is a symptom of usually anticipatory fear, right?
- 29:28I want people to know that it's a really clear message.
- 29:31So if anxiety, if you're not labeled as anxiety, don't use
- 29:34it. It's a big word that's not yours
- 29:36to hold on to use the word fear. But when you bypass all of that
- 29:40and you and you and you move forward and you deregulate, now
- 29:45everything can quiet down. And it's it's pretty profound
- 29:47when people do that. Yeah.
- 29:49It's amazing how how many people are in this kind of sympathetic
- 29:52nervous system because I think we're surrounded by stimulants,
- 29:56you know, lots of caffeine and, and, and lots of kind of
- 29:58dopamine and, and all of these things that keep us hyper alert.
- 30:01And I think because of that, you get all of these kind of
- 30:04thoughts of what's going to happen, what's the next shoe to
- 30:06drop? And, and that keeps people in
- 30:08that state. And most people are breathing
- 30:10very shallow from the chest, never really activating the
- 30:13diaphragm. And then it just means that you
- 30:15can kind of have more of that. And I think it's a great
- 30:18whatever, whatever way you do it, breath work, hypnotherapy,
- 30:22meditation, you know, good relaxation, but kind of having
- 30:26that calming element so the brain can just like, oh, don't
- 30:29need to panic, it's safe. Fucking actually.
- 30:31And a very simple way to do that is just pay attention to your
- 30:34jaw during the day, relax your jaw.
- 30:37And, and when we, before we end, I'll teach you a really your
- 30:40listeners, an incredible tool to be able to do that.
- 30:43But when you relax your jaw and you take conscious breath,
- 30:47meaning conscious breath meanings, you just pay attention
- 30:49to the rise and fall. You feel yourself in the chair,
- 30:52you feel the air coming in. That's a conscious breath.
- 30:56A big breath in and a sigh is incredible.
- 30:59It's so funny when I, I'll do a, a I've trained myself on this
- 31:03automation to take a breath like once every 20 minutes or
- 31:09something. I just do it.
- 31:10But if I, if I am in public or even around a friend and I said
- 31:15you, you OK? Because people think a sigh
- 31:18means that I'm in trouble. Actually, a sigh is a release.
- 31:21It's the body's natural way to release the tension and to
- 31:25release the tension in your jaw. So just do it on your own.
- 31:28Consciously breathe, take that full side breath, just really
- 31:32feel it. And then also relax your jaw.
- 31:34When you do that all through the day, in the evening, you'll feel
- 31:38more present, you'll sleep better.
- 31:41You'll you won't be looking at your phone, you won't be eating
- 31:44more sugar. You really make better
- 31:46decisions. And when we're fatigued at the
- 31:48end of the day, if you relax your jaw during the day, you're
- 31:51telling. And every time you relax your
- 31:52jaw, by the way you're telling you're in the building and
- 31:55you're telling your subconscious mind, we can quiet down now.
- 31:58We can quiet down now. And that's the magic of the in
- 32:01between for sure. And I imagine people sleep
- 32:03better as well because if you are in that kind of high alert,
- 32:06hyper vigilant state, not good for sleeping, you know, whereas
- 32:10if you've got that kind of slower, more kind of relaxed and
- 32:13you've got that kind of rhythm, you know, much easier to get
- 32:16into different brain waves and kind of drift into into sleep
- 32:19than if you're kind of constantly on edge, which a lot
- 32:23of people are. A lot of people are checking
- 32:24their phone literally 10 seconds before they fall asleep.
- 32:27It's in that kind of very kind of analytical present kind of
- 32:32way of thinking. Absolutely relaxing.
- 32:34Doing some breaths before you close your eyes is pretty
- 32:37incredible. I became a sleep expert in this
- 32:41work only because I was finding that if people are not sleeping,
- 32:45the brain doesn't feel safe enough to create change.
- 32:48So one of the first thing I do is help people sleep before they
- 32:51even get in my office. Why?
- 32:53Because the the there, if you're in in fight or flight or
- 32:56survival mode, you're not going to go down in deep and allow
- 33:00yourself to go into it. So I like to say sleep happens
- 33:05in the morning when you wake up. So when you wake up in the
- 33:08morning, preprogram each morning before you open your eyes,
- 33:13because we're in a slower brain wave, that's all hypnosis is,
- 33:16that's all meditation is. We have more access to our
- 33:19brain. Before you even open your eyes,
- 33:22you just tell your subconscious mind what you need for the day.
- 33:26I need to eat clean or I need, I have this meeting or you know,
- 33:29I'm meeting Aunt Millie at for Thanksgiving, you know, or, or
- 33:33wherever we're going for a holiday.
- 33:34Just give direction because that is you having a team meeting
- 33:38with your inner in your, with your inner company, your inner
- 33:42dialogue. And now you've set the tone.
- 33:45But if you don't do something in the morning when you open your
- 33:47eyes, before you open your eyes, you're on what I call an
- 33:50emotional Groundhog, Adam. You're just inserting the same
- 33:53thing day after day after day. And that if people pre program
- 33:56in the morning and then they relax their jaw and they do some
- 34:00breath, some conscious breathing during the day, they absolutely
- 34:03are going to sleep better at night.
- 34:06There's no problem. Well, I'm sure there's a lot of
- 34:08people listening curious about breath work that we're talking
- 34:11about and, and, and your way of doing that.
- 34:14So do you want to guide us through a type of breath work
- 34:16that you do so that we can experience it?
- 34:19Absolutely, I would love this. So what I'm going to do, so the
- 34:22hypnotic breath work that I do is I'll put someone into a light
- 34:26trance. So I'm going to start everybody,
- 34:28please don't do this while you're driving or you're in any
- 34:30dangerous operating equipment, all of that kind of stuff.
- 34:32I have to say that I live in these states, you know, we have
- 34:35to make sure that we're covered legally, right?
- 34:39But also, I want you to be able to close your eyes and really
- 34:41enjoy this. I'm put them in a light trance,
- 34:43which is the alpha sequence that I just taught a little bit of
- 34:45before. And then we'll just do a minute
- 34:47of the breath. And I have to tell you, if you
- 34:49do this, if you practice this, you're going to quiet down
- 34:52everything and just feel safer and more present in your life.
- 34:55So go ahead everybody. Just close your eyes as you can.
- 34:58Just go ahead and close your eyes.
- 35:00As you close your eyes, just relax your jaw.
- 35:02Drop your jaw down. Remember, when you relax your
- 35:05jaw, you're quieting down your nervous system.
- 35:08Now, I want you to soften your tongue.
- 35:10Your tongue is directly connected to the language
- 35:12centers of your brain. So when you drop your tongue
- 35:14down a little bit, all that internal dialogue begins to
- 35:17quiet a little bit. And that's OK Relax your jaw,
- 35:20soften your tongue. And now consciously breathe,
- 35:23feel the rise and fall. Maybe if you understand
- 35:26diaphragmatic breathing, you can breathe from your diaphragm to
- 35:29your chest. Feel the rise and fall of your
- 35:33chest, the breath coming in, and just be in.
- 35:38And you may even feel Now we're in just a moment your shoulders
- 35:41or your body relaxing. Feel yourself in the chair.
- 35:45Every time you feel yourself in the chair, you know you're safe.
- 35:48Now go to my favorite places. This place in the top of your
- 35:52head, this space in your head. I call this the free zone, the
- 35:55safe darkness. Imagine you popped up to this
- 35:58space in your head as you relax your jaws off in your tongue.
- 36:01And imagine you could see all the way around you, above and
- 36:04below, even behind you and this space and the space beyond that.
- 36:10Now thoughts are going to come in.
- 36:11That's OK. Where people who think it's
- 36:14beautiful, but if the thoughts come in, just imagine they drop
- 36:18away into this abyss of nothingness, expand and breathe
- 36:24in this space. In this space, there's no body,
- 36:27no thing, no past, no future. A free zone, neutral, if you
- 36:30will. And this is a great place to
- 36:33start the breath work. And what we're going to do is
- 36:36breathe through your mouth and out through your mouth, from
- 36:40your diaphragm to your chest and out in through Hale.
- 36:44Breathe with me. There's no stop at the top or
- 36:49the bottom. Now the first bit, you're going
- 36:51to be yawning. You may feel a little light
- 36:53headed. This is all normal.
- 36:54This is your body adjusting to the lower CO2 and the higher
- 36:58oxygen limb. It's very safe.
- 37:01No stop at the top or bottom. Keep breathing, concentrate on
- 37:14your breath. If your mind gets busy, you may
- 37:17feel a little lightheaded. This is physical in the
- 37:18beginning this is you said oh this is going to be good yes
- 37:23breathe, breathe Adam good we breathe through the mouth and
- 37:30out through the mouth why it's a bigger hole.
- 37:32You get more oxygen, little bit deeper breath good, inhale and
- 37:38exhale good. Letting go of that which.
- 37:41Does not serve you. You are safe and breathe your
- 37:46mind. Your mouth might get a little
- 37:48dry, that's OK. It'll adjust.
- 37:53Kind of like a fountain. You don't have to push it out,
- 37:55just let it fall naturally and breathe, setting the tone
- 38:16for the rest of your day. You don't have to know what
- 38:20you're releasing. Good, letting it go just a
- 38:27little bit longer now. Good.
- 38:44This is just a little sampling. Now take a breath and hold it as
- 38:46long as you can, normalizing but also letting the mind, the body,
- 38:57the heart and the soul know I am listening.
- 39:02We can quiet down. I am safe.
- 39:12And as you release, imagine a beautiful energy, almost as
- 39:16though you're in the beautiful sun, quieting, cascading from
- 39:22the top of your head down to your feet.
- 39:27And in this space, let it soak in, quieting your mind,
- 39:32releasing what doesn't serve you.
- 39:35Let it move out, your fingers opening up like a faucet.
- 39:38Let this energy flow out your fingers, letting go of any
- 39:41patterns, beliefs, behaviors that no longer serve you, any
- 39:45blocks that you may or may not be aware of.
- 39:49Let it flow through and out, releasing and letting go,
- 39:55knowing every day that you are good and good enough.
- 39:59As you are learning and growing important and valuable.
- 40:04I'll count from 1:00 to 5:00 to bring you out.
- 40:07One, coming back. When you open your eyes at 5,
- 40:09you'll know something is beginning to change within you.
- 40:122 Clear headed, feeling more energy, more aligned. 3 Rested
- 40:18and refreshed. You can remember this entire
- 40:20thing. Go back to it whenever you
- 40:21choose for that beautiful energy continue move through your whole
- 40:25body and mind. Five Eyes open right back here.
- 40:28Regular waking consciousness. Am I right?
- 40:33I can't take to your, I can't talk to your audience, but I how
- 40:36did that feel for you? Adam yeah, it felt, It felt
- 40:38great. And yeah, I think, yeah, just
- 40:43just getting into that rhythm, it kind of it felt.
- 40:46And now when I open my eyes, like, I feel way more alert than
- 40:48I did. Yeah, even just, you know, 10
- 40:51minutes ago. So yeah.
- 40:53I'm in between clients because I have busy days, right?
- 40:57I move one thing to the next. I will stop and do even a couple
- 40:59minutes of this breath. And it does, it quiets
- 41:02everything down, but also gives access to these parts of my
- 41:06brain that when we're busy, busy, busy and we're just in
- 41:09survival, that you that aren't, that aren't fully lit up, so to
- 41:13speak. So when you can do just a few
- 41:15breaths, it's very, very important.
- 41:17But everybody relax your jaw. How'd that feel?
- 41:18The relaxation? Yeah, really good, Yeah.
- 41:22Yeah, it's amazing. So imagine doing an hour of
- 41:24this. It is, it is trippy.
- 41:27At about 40 minutes, you're really opened up.
- 41:31You're vibrating in this, in this breath.
- 41:33But also what's happening you're you're priming the spinal fluid
- 41:37up your spinal column and it hits a pineal gland.
- 41:40And now you have all these endorphins, all this dopamine
- 41:44running through your brain and now you are just people often
- 41:47see colors. They have deep, deep insights.
- 41:50They, I don't know, speak to dead grandma.
- 41:54It's just what anything can happen when you're in this
- 41:56state. And I, I am for it.
- 41:58I love it. But more importantly, not one
- 42:02client that I've done thousands of clients have not have said, I
- 42:06feel so much lighter and we don't understand the heaviness
- 42:10of what we carry from our past. So why not just begin to let it
- 42:13go? Very.
- 42:15Fair. I noticed your Apple Watch
- 42:17there. What, what impact does this kind
- 42:18of breathing have on on heart rate and things like that?
- 42:21It's interesting. It will it will elevate in the
- 42:24beginning. I have an aura ring too, so I
- 42:26keep track. So it's been really.
- 42:27Me too, yeah. It it elevates, it will see a
- 42:30slight stress taste and then it will drop into a really relaxed
- 42:35kind of re engaging state. It's pretty interesting.
- 42:38But in the beginning, because the 1st 10 minutes and your
- 42:41listeners might have experienced there's some resistance.
- 42:44We're just not used to breathing this way, right?
- 42:46So there's some resistance also it's the subconscious minds
- 42:50alarm bells have gone off because it's Oh no, Oh no, she's
- 42:53in the building, she's listening.
- 42:55You know, the boss is here and, and everything starts amping up
- 42:59and we get a little nervous. So that's built in.
- 43:01So when I do my education for my clients, and by the way, I'd
- 43:04love to offer you a a session with me if you'd like to
- 43:08experience a whole hour of breath work I'd love to do.
- 43:10That I'll take you up on that, yeah.
- 43:12We Yeah, yeah. Record it if you want, and we we
- 43:14should. Oh, that would be fantastic.
- 43:16Yeah, let's. Do that.
- 43:16Does the aura ring interpret it as sleep when you do this kind
- 43:20of breath work or it treats it as a waking state?
- 43:23No, it's too activated because you do have some internal
- 43:25vibration that's going on, right?
- 43:28Your body is rested. But people always ask if I have
- 43:31vibrate on my on my hip note chair and I'm like, no, I do not
- 43:35I and they see orbs. These all kinds of incredible
- 43:38things come in when people that they unexpected, windy, quiet
- 43:43everything down, but the heart rate will go down.
- 43:46But it's not sleep. People get very relaxed.
