- 2:27Speaker 3: It's Mike Harber Gass. Good afternoon, sir, welcome to the show.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Good morning, does, good afternoon. I never know what show
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'll on to go home. I'm just gonna start saying hello,
- 2:36Speaker 3: you know, to people, because I get the two shows.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I am here right, you can see it, right. I
- 2:42Speaker 3: am physically here. I'm physically here right. Mentally and not
- 2:45Speaker 3: so much, but good morning and well, good morning shift.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I want to start off with I'm here to talk
- 2:49Speaker 3: to you about your about your campaign, but I did
- 2:53Speaker 3: want to ask you about this situation. We reported on it,
- 2:56Speaker 3: as as did everyone Saturday, with the shots fired was
- 2:59Speaker 3: tracking field event going out at Laateleyfield. Shots were fired
- 3:03Speaker 3: away from the field. No one was in danger. But
- 3:07Speaker 3: I thought, as a somebody who's been around sports your
- 3:11Speaker 3: entire life and was get into your biography a little
- 3:13Speaker 3: bit later, but also as a member of the board
- 3:14Speaker 3: of Education, thought I'd give you an opportunity to speak
- 3:16Speaker 3: on it.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Well, terrible thing, you know, a scary thing. I know
- 3:21Speaker 5: that people panic. Do you think you hear about it
- 3:25Speaker 5: going on all the time everywhere, and when it hits
- 3:28Speaker 5: a little bit closer to home, it's got a different
- 3:30Speaker 5: different feel to it. I will say that I thought
- 3:32Speaker 5: Joe Varney did a fantastic job of handling what happened
- 3:37Speaker 5: the situation. You know that it happened quick here again,
- 3:41Speaker 5: and I don't know if everybody knows that did not
- 3:43Speaker 5: happy happen inside Lateley Field. It was outside on Piedmont
- 3:46Speaker 5: like somebody drove by and fired off shots. I have
- 3:49Speaker 5: no idea why that guy would do such a thing.
- 3:52Speaker 3: He was apprehended shortly thereafter, yes.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Thank goodness, and hopefully he's going to be held accountable
- 3:57Speaker 5: for that, because, like I say, you know, it puts
- 3:59Speaker 5: fear into people.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And here.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Again, it could happen anywhere, but it did happen here.
- 4:03Speaker 5: And I also want to commend Charleston Police Department can
- 4:07Speaker 5: all kind of Sheriff's office. They were there quickly, and
- 4:10Speaker 5: they apprehended a suspect quickly, and it was handled, what
- 4:15Speaker 5: we thought, in a productive way as far as maintaining
- 4:19Speaker 5: the safety of our students.
- 4:20Speaker 1: You know, you think.
- 4:22Speaker 5: About all the great events that go on at Lavely
- 4:26Speaker 5: Field and all the all the things we've done and
- 4:29Speaker 5: not had one one ounce of problem, and this is
- 4:31Speaker 5: this kind of black eye to the city and I
- 4:34Speaker 5: and I get that, but I think moving forward, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 5: let's say this is an isolated incident. Nobody was being targeted,
- 4:43Speaker 5: and I hate that it happened, and hopefully, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 5: we'll be able to move forward from it and it won't
- 4:48Speaker 5: happen again. I mean, we've got some things coming up
- 4:50Speaker 5: right now. We've got regional track meets getting ready to happen,
- 4:52Speaker 5: to state track meets there, and we'll be prepping for
- 4:54Speaker 5: the state football championships before you know it.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, and I think it's it's very important to
- 5:01Speaker 3: point out again that this did not this happen in
- 5:03Speaker 3: the area around, you know, Ladley Field, and because someone
- 5:08Speaker 3: had asked me, well, can this person be charged with
- 5:10Speaker 3: additional charges because it was on school property? But really
- 5:12Speaker 3: it wasn't, so it was something happened outside the event.
- 5:16Speaker 5: They weren't, but you know it was close to home. Yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 5: and here again a terrible thing. But with the reviews
- 5:23Speaker 5: that I've seen, and we've been in constant contact with superintendent.
- 5:26Speaker 5: I talked to Joe Varney personally and here again, I
- 5:29Speaker 5: think they did what they could do.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Mike Garbagass is here. Remember the Canaw County Board of Education.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Now you were appointed to that position, as I said,
- 5:38Speaker 3: hoping her voters will are hoping you will elect you
- 5:41Speaker 3: to that position. Any any surprises during your time on
- 5:44Speaker 3: the board. I mean you've been around and you know
- 5:47Speaker 3: students your entire career, with your work with s SAC
- 5:52Speaker 3: and whatnot. But any surprises, anything that kind of you
- 5:55Speaker 3: weren't expecting.
- 5:56Speaker 5: You know, nothing nothing hit me between the ice I
- 5:59Speaker 5: did and I didn't have that all haul moment on
- 6:03Speaker 5: my goodness. Everything that I have experienced at this point
- 6:06Speaker 5: are things that I have dealt with in the past
- 6:09Speaker 5: and felt comfortable with. Now not everything's been easy going
- 6:13Speaker 5: through the staffing formula and be able to maintain our budget,
- 6:17Speaker 5: which I said early on going into it that I
- 6:20Speaker 5: am going to be a good steward of our tax
- 6:21Speaker 5: payer dollars given this opportunity, so I paid attention to
- 6:24Speaker 5: how the budgeting was going on. But you know, when
- 6:28Speaker 5: you come down to managing that budget and you're looking
- 6:31Speaker 5: at the staffing formula and that's grossly outdated in my opinion,
- 6:36Speaker 5: from the state level, and it's difficult. It's difficult to
- 6:41Speaker 5: tell people we're sorry. You know, we don't we don't
- 6:43Speaker 5: have a position for you anymore, you know, through the
- 6:46Speaker 5: process of eliminating students, and you know, not not to
- 6:49Speaker 5: get into the Hope scholarship thing. People can educate their
- 6:52Speaker 5: children the best they what they think is best for
- 6:57Speaker 5: their family. Nobody's going to tell me what's best for
- 6:59Speaker 5: my family. But in the day, there are repercussions for that.
- 7:02Speaker 5: And then these are people that we work with every day,
- 7:06Speaker 5: people that I actually hired while I was an administrator
- 7:10Speaker 5: in Kannall County Schools, And it's difficult to eliminate these positions.
- 7:15Speaker 5: And until something changes, unfortunately, I don't think it's going
- 7:18Speaker 5: to get better anytime soon. So that part's been the
- 7:22Speaker 5: biggest challenge that And you know, I've been participating in
- 7:26Speaker 5: continuing education classes with West Virginia County boards of Education
- 7:30Speaker 5: and trying to really focus on illlegalities, focus on policy.
- 7:35Speaker 5: So that's been a good thing for me. I've always
- 7:38Speaker 5: told my kids to be a lifelong learner, and now
- 7:40Speaker 5: I'm living that so and learning new things. That's been
- 7:44Speaker 5: a good thing for me.
- 7:46Speaker 3: It's a difficult time and here we're talking with Mike
- 7:48Speaker 3: Arbigas from Kinlaw County Board of Education. Been a difficult
- 7:51Speaker 3: time for anyone in West Virginia in the public school sector,
- 7:54Speaker 3: whether you're a teacher, whether you're a board member or
- 7:58Speaker 3: administrator or whatever. They came because as you may, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 3: there's been people that have lost their jobs. Population, law,
- 8:04Speaker 3: school consolidation, all these things. It's it's not easy being
- 8:06Speaker 3: on the board of education. It's not a great time.
- 8:09Speaker 5: It's not a great time to be a Board of
- 8:11Speaker 5: Education member or a superintendent. And I feel sorry for
- 8:14Speaker 5: doctor Potter and her staff as well. I mean, they're
- 8:16Speaker 5: the ones that I have to make these decisions. The Board
- 8:17Speaker 5: of Education ultimately has to prove the decisions she's making
- 8:21Speaker 5: but we trust what she's doing and her and her
- 8:25Speaker 5: staff there that she's got, She's got good people around her,
- 8:29Speaker 5: and you know, sometimes you have to make these difficult decisions,
- 8:33Speaker 5: and like I say, hopefully moving forward, we're going to
- 8:37Speaker 5: be able to maintain iron integrity here in Kanah Can Schools.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I do know that there are eleven.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Counties in West Virginia currently under state takeover for multitude
- 8:47Speaker 5: or reasons, some of them financially, some of them not.
- 8:50Speaker 5: But they don't they don't want to do that. They
- 8:53Speaker 5: don't want to come in and take over, and I certainly,
- 8:55Speaker 5: as a board member, do not want the State Department
- 8:57Speaker 5: to have ever come in and take over Kanna Cane School.
- 9:00Speaker 5: So I don't foresee that happening. But at the same time,
- 9:03Speaker 5: that comes down to responsibility and being able to communicate
- 9:08Speaker 5: effectively and making sure that we're making the right decisions
- 9:11Speaker 5: for our students.
- 9:12Speaker 3: For those who don't know, you, give us your bio,
- 9:14Speaker 3: give us how just tell us who Mike ar Begans.
- 9:18Speaker 5: I'm born and raised here in Kannall County down St.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Albans.
- 9:21Speaker 5: I got a job as a teacher aide when I
- 9:23Speaker 5: was nineteen years old and still in school. I had
- 9:25Speaker 5: to get insurance to get work, so I got a
- 9:29Speaker 5: job as a teacher aid and started. I went through school,
- 9:33Speaker 5: went to school at night at Western State University, and
- 9:36Speaker 5: always went full time during the summers, and finally graduated.
- 9:40Speaker 5: It took me a couple extra years to get through
- 9:41Speaker 5: because I was a part time student of full time employee,
- 9:44Speaker 5: but eventually started teaching and coaching at Dunbar Junior High
- 9:48Speaker 5: School and in nineteen ninety star coaching basketball at South
- 9:51Speaker 5: Charleston High School and eventually transitioned into that building where
- 9:54Speaker 5: I worked as a teacher and a coach and an
- 9:57Speaker 5: athletic director, vice principal, its curriculum vice principal for a
- 10:02Speaker 5: couple of years, and then ultimately I became principal to
- 10:04Speaker 5: school in two thousand and seven when coach Walton retired,
- 10:08Speaker 5: and stayed there until twenty eighteen.
- 10:12Speaker 3: If you are chosen Mike by the voters on election day,
- 10:17Speaker 3: what do you hope to accomplish during your next term?
- 10:19Speaker 5: Well, here again, it's I want to continue to build
- 10:24Speaker 5: on the positive things that are going on within our schools.
- 10:28Speaker 5: And I will tell you, Dave, you know, since I
- 10:30Speaker 5: got on here, I have been doing walkthroughs in our buildings.
- 10:34Speaker 5: The positive has been being able to reconnect with people
- 10:37Speaker 5: that I worked with for years, and then also getting
- 10:40Speaker 5: out meeting new people. That's always a thrill for me
- 10:42Speaker 5: to be able to do that. But I have been
- 10:44Speaker 5: in our schools. I'm seeing here again things that I
- 10:48Speaker 5: saw as a principal, you know, talented people that have
- 10:51Speaker 5: chosen to teach school. And I see a lot of
- 10:54Speaker 5: good things going on within our schools. And I think
- 10:58Speaker 5: the biggest challenge that that we face as educators is
- 11:01Speaker 5: and I've said this before, that I want to be
- 11:04Speaker 5: able to offer something to every kid that walks in
- 11:06Speaker 5: our schools.
- 11:07Speaker 3: And I don't care what.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Their goals are in life. I want to be able
- 11:12Speaker 5: to help guide them to that. But that's a tall task.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I mean, if you're talking about kids that are wanting
- 11:17Speaker 5: to be in a medical profession or legal profession, all
- 11:20Speaker 5: the way down to people that want to be in
- 11:23Speaker 5: the vocational field. And these kids, by the time they
- 11:26Speaker 5: get to high school, they realize what they're wanting to do,
- 11:30Speaker 5: you know, through their life experiences, and I think we
- 11:33Speaker 5: need to make sure our curriculum stays broad enough to
- 11:37Speaker 5: be able to accommodate those kids needs.
- 11:40Speaker 3: You have a website or social media for your campaign to.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Do's a It's a Facebook page Michael arb Gas for
- 11:45Speaker 5: Kanall County Schools Board of Education, and we've been posting.
- 11:49Speaker 5: I mean, I've been on the run. I've been to
- 11:53Speaker 5: multiple city council meetings, and I've attended every political form
- 11:56Speaker 5: and event that I've been invited to, and uh, you
- 12:00Speaker 5: know here again, it's the experience that I have in
- 12:04Speaker 5: the trenches, and I feel like, you know, I'm offering
- 12:08Speaker 5: my services and people want me to continue to serve.
- 12:10Speaker 5: I've been on there now for six months, so you
- 12:12Speaker 5: can go back and take a look at the questions
- 12:14Speaker 5: I ask and how I voted, and if given the opportunity,
- 12:19Speaker 5: I'm going to get after. I mean, I have strong
- 12:22Speaker 5: work ethics, I always have, and more importantly, I have
- 12:25Speaker 5: a passion for what I do, and I have a
- 12:27Speaker 5: passion for our school system.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Final thirty, Why should someone vote Mike Carbagans to keep
- 12:32Speaker 3: you on the on cannibord of Education?
- 12:34Speaker 5: Here again to the things we just spoke about, Dave.
- 12:36Speaker 5: The experience that I've had, I've had over forty three
- 12:39Speaker 5: years experience in knaal Kane Schools again starting clear back
- 12:42Speaker 5: and worked in service personnel and I've taught and you know,
- 12:45Speaker 5: been in the administration in I went back and substituted.
- 12:49Speaker 5: After after my retirement, I got another job. But shout
- 12:54Speaker 5: out to my bosses for not firing me, Brian and
- 12:56Speaker 5: Tammy for all the days I've been missing over this.
- 12:59Speaker 3: But here again the work ethics.
- 13:02Speaker 5: That I have and what I'm going to bring to
- 13:04Speaker 5: the table, and the passion that i have for our
- 13:06Speaker 5: school system and more importantly for our children in Kanall County.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Mike Carby Gass, appreciate you being here. Best of luck
- 13:13Speaker 3: to you, Thanks for having me down. And It's nine

- 16:51Speaker 3: staten Isla. They're back at Gomart Ballpark on Tuesday the twelfth.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Get your tickets now dirty birds baseball dot com. And
- 16:57Speaker 3: if you don't have your tickets for Marshall tomorrow night
- 17:01Speaker 3: when you're out a lot because the game is officially
- 17:03Speaker 3: sold out. Charleston, Mary Amy Schuler A good when coming
- 17:05Speaker 3: up a little bit later on. It's been a huge
- 17:07Speaker 3: event in Ripley the last few years, the annual Tunnel
- 17:11Speaker 3: to Towers event. It's happy to this Saturday. Sophia Wigel's
- 17:14Speaker 3: here to talk about. It's welcome to the show. And
- 17:16Speaker 3: mom's here too, So thank you for having us, all right,
- 17:20Speaker 3: And so for those who may not know the whole story,
- 17:24Speaker 3: tell us the story of Tunnel to Towers, I mean
- 17:28Speaker 3: on a national level than how you got involved.
- 17:30Speaker 10: With yeah, of course, So the Tunnel to Towers Foundation,
- 17:33Speaker 10: it was started after nine to eleven a firefighter named
- 17:36Speaker 10: Steven Siller. He was just getting off of his shift
- 17:39Speaker 10: and he was going to go play a round of
- 17:41Speaker 10: golf with his brothers and he heard what was happening
- 17:44Speaker 10: at the towers so he called his wife and told
- 17:47Speaker 10: her to tell his brothers that he was going to
- 17:49Speaker 10: catch up with them later. And he went back to
- 17:51Speaker 10: his station and he put on all of his gear
- 17:54Speaker 10: and he ran through the Brooklyn Battery tunnel and ultimately
- 17:58Speaker 10: died at the Towers, which is where we get the
- 17:59Speaker 10: name tunnel to Towers. And so he ultimately gave up
- 18:03Speaker 10: his life along with many others during nine to eleven.
- 18:06Speaker 10: And so his family started this to help first responders
- 18:09Speaker 10: and military members and their families. So if they are
- 18:12Speaker 10: catastrophically injured, they will build them smart homes adapted to
- 18:16Speaker 10: their needs. If they are killed in the line of duty,
- 18:18Speaker 10: they will provide them mortgage free homes. And they are
- 18:22Speaker 10: starting to work with veteran homelessness. You know, we'd like
- 18:24Speaker 10: to eradicate it. Obviously. If someone is willing to go
- 18:28Speaker 10: risk their life for our country, the least that we
- 18:31Speaker 10: should be able to do is take care of them
- 18:33Speaker 10: and make sure that they are not living on the
- 18:34Speaker 10: street in the country that they fought for. And so
- 18:37Speaker 10: they are providing them PTSD support and trade skills so
- 18:41Speaker 10: they are not completely reliant upon the foundation. And they
- 18:44Speaker 10: also announced a scholarship program for their in the line
- 18:48Speaker 10: of duty children that up to the age of thirty
- 18:51Speaker 10: three years old, they can get their tuition paid for.
- 18:54Speaker 10: I'm in a free ride to college. So they're really
- 18:56Speaker 10: the foundations. Their entire theme is while we have time,
- 19:00Speaker 10: let us do good. And again, like I said, it's
- 19:03Speaker 10: the whole point is being able to help our first
- 19:05Speaker 10: responders and military members and their families live independent lives
- 19:09Speaker 10: and to be able to have as much freedom as
- 19:11Speaker 10: they can.
- 19:12Speaker 2: And so a little bit.
- 19:13Speaker 10: About how I got started in this is my brother Levi.
- 19:16Speaker 10: He's in the military. So I was thirteen and he
- 19:19Speaker 10: was at basic training, and of course, as thirteen, you
- 19:22Speaker 10: think of all the worst things that could happen. And
- 19:25Speaker 10: I saw That's when I kind of started to pay
- 19:27Speaker 10: attention to these commercials that I saw for their Catastrophically
- 19:29Speaker 10: Injured Home program, and I saw about a weight list
- 19:33Speaker 10: that I think it was about three pages long of
- 19:35Speaker 10: just all of these names of people that needed a
- 19:38Speaker 10: smart home, and I just thought that could be my brother,
- 19:42Speaker 10: and that those are that is somebody's child that is
- 19:45Speaker 10: on that weight list who has had a life altering
- 19:48Speaker 10: injury that they cannot live on their own. And so
- 19:52Speaker 10: I looked at mom and I said, you know, I'd
- 19:54Speaker 10: like to do something for that. I want to help them,
- 19:56Speaker 10: And we reached out to the foundation and we were
- 19:59Speaker 10: able to get in contact and start. They said, you know, well,
- 20:02Speaker 10: we have five k's that we raise or that we
- 20:05Speaker 10: do to help raise money, and this year we've raised
- 20:09Speaker 10: over I believe it's one hundred and thirty thousand dollars
- 20:11Speaker 10: so far. So you know, obviously eleven dollars a month
- 20:15Speaker 10: is a very big help to the foundation, but to
- 20:17Speaker 10: be able to raise this much money in the past
- 20:19Speaker 10: five years, it's it's a blessing.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And that's you know why we have this event.
- 20:22Speaker 3: And again it's going to be in Ripley. Give us
- 20:24Speaker 3: all the details by the time, and there's some things
- 20:27Speaker 3: people need to know because of early voting going on
- 20:29Speaker 3: in Jackson County, so so talk about that.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Yep.
- 20:31Speaker 10: So definitely pay attention to this because we normally have
- 20:34Speaker 10: it at the Jackson County Courthouse, but this year we
- 20:36Speaker 10: will not be there.
- 20:37Speaker 2: If you show up, you will be by yourself.
- 20:39Speaker 10: I guess you could run a five k there if
- 20:41Speaker 10: you want to, But we are going to be at
- 20:42Speaker 10: the Ripley High School. It's going to be all on
- 20:45Speaker 10: the field. We're going to have the start and finish
- 20:47Speaker 10: line there. It's going to be on May ninth at
- 20:50Speaker 10: ten am. So do not show up at the Jackson
- 20:52Speaker 10: County Courthouse and we are going to have signs there
- 20:54Speaker 10: to say if you do end up showing up on accident,
- 20:57Speaker 10: to go back to the Ripley High School. But you know,
- 21:00Speaker 10: we're excited for it, and hey, it's the fifth year.
- 21:03Speaker 10: We get to switch things up a little bit. And
- 21:04Speaker 10: it's also the twenty fifth year of nine to eleven,
- 21:06Speaker 10: so just very big years for us.
- 21:08Speaker 3: And a lot of activities go on on site there
- 21:12Speaker 3: at the high school, not other than just the I
- 21:15Speaker 3: mean you got all kinds of other things around it.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Talk about all the things that are going on around it.
- 21:18Speaker 10: No, So I mean with the five K, well, this
- 21:22Speaker 10: is something that I do want to touch on real quick. Yeah,
- 21:24Speaker 10: but especially for our participants. I really we would like
- 21:28Speaker 10: to push for if there are any first responders and
- 21:30Speaker 10: military members to come and run in your gear and
- 21:33Speaker 10: participate in your gear. This is you know, obviously this
- 21:37Speaker 10: is about nine to eleven and remembering nine to eleven
- 21:40Speaker 10: and how during that day all of those first responders
- 21:42Speaker 10: and military members ran towards the towers or towards the towers, Yes,
- 21:46Speaker 10: and they ran towards the danger and they were in
- 21:48Speaker 10: their gear and just like Steven Siller, he ran about
- 21:51Speaker 10: the distance of a five K completely in bunker gear.
- 21:54Speaker 10: And so you know, it's very steeped in remembrance. But
- 21:57Speaker 10: you know, obviously, I mean, Ripley, there's so much to do, Ripley,
- 22:01Speaker 10: and we really encourage everybody come out and make a
- 22:03Speaker 10: day of it. There's also going to be what is
- 22:05Speaker 10: that it's the they're having a cookout?
- 22:07Speaker 2: Where is that going to be?
- 22:09Speaker 10: Yeah, the the VFW is going to be having a
- 22:12Speaker 10: cookout that just for like after is like a little reception.
- 22:15Speaker 10: It's going to be at the VFW across from the
- 22:17Speaker 10: fire department, and that you can go to the five
- 22:20Speaker 10: K and then afterwards go and get maybe some food
- 22:22Speaker 10: and enjoy some just community involvement, because that's what this
- 22:26Speaker 10: is about, is remembering nine to eleven and bringing our
- 22:28Speaker 10: communities together.
- 22:29Speaker 3: And again, can at this point, what do you need
- 22:33Speaker 3: at this point? I mean, because I know you have
- 22:35Speaker 3: sponsors and things of that nature. We're just a few
- 22:36Speaker 3: days away. What what do you in need of to
- 22:38Speaker 3: pull this thing off for this week.
- 22:40Speaker 2: You know, we just need people's participation at this point.
- 22:43Speaker 10: You know, all of our sponsors are taken care of
- 22:45Speaker 10: because obviously we have to get the signage and everything
- 22:48Speaker 10: that that's cut off. I mean, if you want to give,
- 22:50Speaker 10: you can give, but you won't be on any.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Of the signage.
- 22:53Speaker 10: But really, you know, we just really encourage fundraisings as individuals.
- 22:58Speaker 10: You can go to the website it's run walk Ripley
- 23:02Speaker 10: at Tea to Tea dot org and you can go
- 23:05Speaker 10: there and you can just give five dollars. It really
- 23:07Speaker 10: does not take a lot of money. You know, every
- 23:10Speaker 10: little thing adds up. So we really would just love
- 23:12Speaker 10: to have your participation, your involvement, and ultimately, you know,
- 23:16Speaker 10: if even if you can't make it the day of,
- 23:18Speaker 10: if you want to go on and give, you know,
- 23:20Speaker 10: five or twenty dollars just to help us. We've already
- 23:22Speaker 10: raised over thirty two thousand dollars this year, but just
- 23:25Speaker 10: to help us raise even more because like I said,
- 23:28Speaker 10: every little thing adds up and no amount is too small.
- 23:31Speaker 10: But again, if you are a military member or first responder,
- 23:34Speaker 10: please come out in your gear and participate I think
- 23:37Speaker 10: sometimes they think maybe that, oh, you know, I don't
- 23:40Speaker 10: I don't want to be showing off, or they might think,
- 23:43Speaker 10: but it's it's very important for us as individuals. It's
- 23:47Speaker 10: very symbolic to see them running and inspiring to see
- 23:50Speaker 10: all that they do and all that they do for
- 23:51Speaker 10: our communities. And bring your kids out. You know, this
- 23:54Speaker 10: is a family event. If you can't run, I know
- 23:57Speaker 10: my eighty year old grandparents where they're sitting in launch
- 24:00Speaker 10: chairs just.
- 24:00Speaker 2: In cheering them on, you know, I know, yeah, enjoying
- 24:02Speaker 2: the event.
- 24:03Speaker 10: You can wave flags, you can come cheer, just you know,
- 24:06Speaker 10: really come out the day of and enjoy a day
- 24:08Speaker 10: of remembering nine to eleven in community.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Now, wait a minute, I got to ask you about
- 24:13Speaker 3: about one thing. Is anybody other than mayor raider in
- 24:17Speaker 3: Ripley allowed to wave a flag because I thought that
- 24:19Speaker 3: that was kind of her thing.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Only Hey, the mayor provides us the flags, so.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Of course she did.
- 24:28Speaker 13: Yeah we haven't had.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 13: Yeah, bring out big flags. You can go get them
- 24:34Speaker 13: at Walmart, the ones that you put out on your
- 24:37Speaker 13: front porch.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Run with those. Also, this is a thought if.
- 24:41Speaker 13: There are any spider Man's or heroes that we want
- 24:45Speaker 13: to come in here.
- 24:46Speaker 8: We would absolutely love that.
- 24:48Speaker 13: We've had a hard time finding it, but that's something
- 24:50Speaker 13: to throw out there.
- 24:51Speaker 3: They can call call us out to superheroes everywhere. Yes,
- 24:55Speaker 3: all right, I was just kidding about Mayor Raiders. She's
- 24:57Speaker 3: one of my favorite people.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Yeah, that's she. Here's the reason why we have those
- 25:01Speaker 2: little flags. So you know, that's all.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I have no doubt. We had a text somebody said,
- 25:05Speaker 3: any chance that you would move this to Charleston, maybe
- 25:07Speaker 3: add the climb, maybe the stairs at Ladley Tower.
- 25:10Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, hey, the climb is something that is amazing,
- 25:14Speaker 10: and I will say, you know, if people want to
- 25:15Speaker 10: get on board and come help you. It's a lot
- 25:18Speaker 10: too organized for a five k, and also the money
- 25:20Speaker 10: that it involves. But I mean, if we were ever
- 25:23Speaker 10: able to get you know, the support and involvement, I mean,
- 25:25Speaker 10: we'd love to bring a climb or even they have
- 25:27Speaker 10: golf tournaments that they do as well, so they do have.
- 25:30Speaker 2: A climb, I believe in Elkview.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yeah, so yeah, yeah, this is a I mean there
- 25:36Speaker 3: are other events like this in you know, all over
- 25:38Speaker 3: the country. Yes, you said, yeah, I mean all right,
- 25:40Speaker 3: so give us all the details again.
- 25:41Speaker 14: Yep.
- 25:42Speaker 10: So it's going to be May ninth, So this Saturday
- 25:45Speaker 10: at ten am at Ripley High School.
- 25:47Speaker 3: And sure you realize it's at Ripley High School. Yes,
- 25:50Speaker 3: no other place, not at the courthouse because of early voting.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yes, yep, last minute date or location change.
- 25:56Speaker 10: If you have any questions, I mean follow us at
- 25:58Speaker 10: Ripley at tunnel to turs Ripley or tunnel to Towers
- 26:02Speaker 10: Ripley westfridgain Gina, and that we post updates. We'll be
- 26:05Speaker 10: posting things also about the location, just to remind everybody.
- 26:10Speaker 10: And also our email is Ripley at t twot dot org.
- 26:14Speaker 10: You can email us if you have any questions or
- 26:16Speaker 10: like I said, message us on Facebook and we'll be
- 26:17Speaker 10: happy to get back to you.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah, we're going to have you on midday I think
- 26:20Speaker 3: later today, Amanda and I will be talking to you
- 26:21Speaker 3: about that. So get get that state wide flavor, because
- 26:24Speaker 3: people really do come from all over I mean this
- 26:27Speaker 3: is in Ripley in Jackson County, but you get people
- 26:30Speaker 3: from all over the company.
- 26:31Speaker 10: We have people from Tennessee, Ohio, I mean all over
- 26:35Speaker 10: the place and within our state.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's not just about Ripley.
- 26:38Speaker 10: It is a statewide and nationwide event that you know what,
- 26:42Speaker 10: it supports Our military and first responders will go anywhere
- 26:45Speaker 10: for us, so you know, the least we could do
- 26:47Speaker 10: is travel a little bit to support them.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Now, Plus, Ripley's just a cool town, is it really is?
- 26:51Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 26:51Speaker 3: I mean and it's and it's of course the home
- 26:54Speaker 3: of Joe Parsons and Jared Parsons too, So I'd be
- 26:57Speaker 3: remiss if I didn't mention that. All right. One other text,
- 27:00Speaker 3: somebody said anyone ever considered a bus toward a Ground
- 27:03Speaker 3: Zero to the memorial before the anniversary in the Texas?
- 27:06Speaker 3: Said I would love to go there, but New York
- 27:08Speaker 3: is insane right now? Is that something that you'd look
- 27:10Speaker 3: at maybe for the future. I mean, you dream big girl,
- 27:12Speaker 3: I mean you know.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Listen.
- 27:14Speaker 10: I will say we did do a bus tour to
- 27:18Speaker 10: New York and I was able to go to Ground zero.
- 27:20Speaker 2: But one thing I will say this is just to
- 27:22Speaker 2: throw this out there.
- 27:23Speaker 10: Obviously, this is the twenty fifth year anniversary, and if
- 27:27Speaker 10: anyone ever has the opportunity to go to the tunnel
- 27:30Speaker 10: to Towers run in New York, I highly recommend that
- 27:33Speaker 10: is something that should be a bucket list thing for
- 27:36Speaker 10: everyone because to be in New York, you actually run
- 27:38Speaker 10: the exact footsteps that Steven did. So you go through
- 27:40Speaker 10: the Brooklyn Battery tunnel and you go all the way
- 27:43Speaker 10: to ground zero and just to see I mean everyone,
- 27:47Speaker 10: they are all holding there's firemen and military members holding
- 27:52Speaker 10: banners of every single person first responder, military member that
- 27:56Speaker 10: passed away on nine to eleven. And just to be
- 27:58Speaker 10: in New York and in that atmosphere, I mean, if
- 28:00Speaker 10: anyone ever has the opportunity, I believe it's the last
- 28:02Speaker 10: weekend in September, but definitely put that on your bucket
- 28:07Speaker 10: list because obviously Ripley is very big and it's an
- 28:11Speaker 10: amazing opportunity. But to be able to go to a
- 28:13Speaker 10: tunnel to towers run in New York, Yeah, and their big,
- 28:15Speaker 10: I mean their main thing. It's thirty five thousand people
- 28:18Speaker 10: a different Oh yeah no, but that is something if
- 28:21Speaker 10: you ever get the opportunity to do.
- 28:22Speaker 2: We were able to go, I believe.
- 28:24Speaker 10: In twenty twenty one or twenty twenty two, and my goodness,
- 28:27Speaker 10: I mean just chills. It's very emotional, it's very I
- 28:31Speaker 10: just I can't even explain it.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Okay, by the way I was. Things can change with
- 28:36Speaker 3: the weather, you know. However, right now there's no chance
- 28:40Speaker 3: of rain on Saturday.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Okay, perfect, keep it that way.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Thank you, Brian Hughes. Yes, ye, yes, thank you, Brian
- 28:45Speaker 3: hugh Also understand our own Matt Murphy's going to be
- 28:48Speaker 3: there too.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Right, Oh yeah, yep, He's going to be our DJ
- 28:50Speaker 2: and we're very thinking back guitar.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Murphy will be there. So all right, Syvia and Mom,
- 28:55Speaker 3: I appreciate you both being here.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Please yes, say thank you so much.

- 33:29Speaker 3: get to. I will get to. Charles may Amy Shueler,
- 33:33Speaker 3: Goodwin coming up, Texas speaking the first responders. Have you
- 33:36Speaker 3: seen the post from the brother of the guy from
- 33:38Speaker 3: the off UW tragedy. It is some sad radius.
- 33:40Speaker 6: I have a.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Text mentioning the Hope scholarship. You see how some schools
- 33:47Speaker 3: across the country organizing these anti ice protests, walkouts, and
- 33:50Speaker 3: activist teachers are using the brainwash students to be the
- 33:53Speaker 3: little foot soldiers. You can understand why a lot of
- 33:55Speaker 3: people here in West Virginia are wanting that charter school
- 33:58Speaker 3: and homeschooling choice, because even though that type of activism
- 34:01Speaker 3: may not be here now, it normally finds its way here.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Thank you Texter for that text. Another Texas thank you
- 34:09Speaker 3: Westerrginia Radio and V one hundred for not canceling the
- 34:11Speaker 3: yard sale at Laidleyfield Parking on this Saturday. Stephen Jenny's
- 34:14Speaker 3: yard sale will be this Saturday. Stephen Jenny will be
- 34:16Speaker 3: on the show on Friday to talk about it. She's here,
- 34:19Speaker 3: she's been here. How just had stuff I had to get.
- 34:21Speaker 2: To Yes, trus I love it.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Amy Schuler going, hey doing.
- 34:24Speaker 6: I wonder Steph Jenny wonder if they have in their
- 34:26Speaker 6: yard sale.
- 34:26Speaker 3: That sounds great, It's huge. I mean, it really really
- 34:29Speaker 3: is great. I do want to get serious about several things.
- 34:32Speaker 3: One of those is the event that we had the track.
- 34:35Speaker 3: You didn't have it, but there was a track event
- 34:37Speaker 3: Saturday at Laidley Field. Shots were fired, not inside the stadium.
- 34:42Speaker 3: It was by somebody you know, on the outside. I
- 34:45Speaker 3: think it was eighteen years old, I think, and taken
- 34:47Speaker 3: into custody rapidly.
- 34:49Speaker 6: Your thoughts, Yeah, well, I'll give credit where credit is due.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Is the immediate response of our first responders, certainly our
- 34:59Speaker 6: police who showed up. If you know Deputy Chief he's
- 35:03Speaker 6: now Deputy Chief Detective Tony Hazlett. There's a reason why
- 35:07Speaker 6: he is at the top of this administration is his
- 35:11Speaker 6: solve rate is outstanding. He can find someone and find
- 35:16Speaker 6: out the answers. The Charleston Police Department and our detectives
- 35:19Speaker 6: are just incredible at doing that, and so so thank
- 35:23Speaker 6: you to them. And I'll just go ahead and say,
- 35:25Speaker 6: you know, while my boys are, you know, in college
- 35:27Speaker 6: now and having been at that track and having been
- 35:30Speaker 6: at big meets and big concerts and big events, this
- 35:33Speaker 6: is what I will say. Thank you to the parents
- 35:35Speaker 6: who remained calm, who you know evacuated, who you know
- 35:39Speaker 6: you information, And I say that you and I talk
- 35:43Speaker 6: about this all the time. Guess what is important yesterday,
- 35:47Speaker 6: today and will be especially tomorrow. I have a very
- 35:51Speaker 6: good girlfriend who could not be there. She was with
- 35:55Speaker 6: another kid, but she had one kid that was running
- 35:58Speaker 6: and texted and said, thank you for providing when you
- 36:02Speaker 6: had correct and accurate information, because when you start posting
- 36:07Speaker 6: things this is what I think would happen. Check on
- 36:10Speaker 6: your kids. It is a mother father nightmare. Your heart
- 36:16Speaker 6: sinks when you're providing information that is not clear. I
- 36:21Speaker 6: know that we live in a give it to me
- 36:23Speaker 6: right now. I want the information. It is very dangerous
- 36:26Speaker 6: when you do that. And so thank you to the parents,
- 36:29Speaker 6: to the administrators and folks who are providing information when
- 36:33Speaker 6: you could get it, because what happens in an emergency
- 36:35Speaker 6: situation and unfortunately and I'm gonna knock on some wood here, Dave.
- 36:39Speaker 6: I've been in a lot. You have to remain calm,
- 36:43Speaker 6: you have to work with people there. The first thing
- 36:45Speaker 6: is to make sure that everybody is safe and you
- 36:48Speaker 6: are working boots on the ground. That happened, As always,
- 36:53Speaker 6: we will. You know, it wasn't a City of Charleston event,
- 36:55Speaker 6: but we are always asked to respond, and we do.
- 36:58Speaker 6: We're going to go in to say what happened, how
- 37:01Speaker 6: did you do? How may we help you in any
- 37:04Speaker 6: way manage these events going forward? But I'll just go
- 37:08Speaker 6: back and say, you know, I'm a school of journalism grad.
- 37:13Speaker 6: Information is important, Accurate information is critical, and especially when
- 37:18Speaker 6: you're dealing with a very scary situation and when you're
- 37:22Speaker 6: dealing with children, and you know, I'm not sure how
- 37:24Speaker 6: we get through this world, in this new, ever changing
- 37:28Speaker 6: I've got to have it first. I want it first.
- 37:31Speaker 6: I want to be the first person to post. I
- 37:33Speaker 6: want to make money off of this. I'm not sure
- 37:35Speaker 6: how that is going to jive with what we do,
- 37:37Speaker 6: what I knew as a profession of mine for so long,
- 37:40Speaker 6: and what you all do here at Metro News, but
- 37:44Speaker 6: it is really worth revisiting, and especially as a mother
- 37:48Speaker 6: of a child who's getting ready to graduate in the
- 37:50Speaker 6: read school of media. How do we correct how do
- 37:53Speaker 6: we get something to people quick if it is important
- 37:55Speaker 6: and we know it to be true, if it is beneficial.
- 38:00Speaker 6: And that's the thing that I honestly, when I see
- 38:02Speaker 6: situations happen like this, really, David, that's the thing that
- 38:05Speaker 6: I that I worry about the most.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Don't get me started on this because I won't have
- 38:09Speaker 3: any time for you. I mean, I'll tell you. You know,
- 38:12Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, we had that horrible chemical
- 38:15Speaker 3: that's right, but the time, and I'm not downplaying the
- 38:18Speaker 3: injuries by any stretch of the imagination. We had people
- 38:20Speaker 3: reporting it was as mass casualty event. I mean again,
- 38:24Speaker 3: I'm not downplaying the seriousness of it. But you know
- 38:27Speaker 3: it's not your place to post that on Facebook. Okay,
- 38:31Speaker 3: that's not you've not been trained on how to do this. Yeah,
- 38:35Speaker 3: I'm not a journalist. I don't I don't pretend to be, Okay,
- 38:38Speaker 3: but let the professionals handle that.
- 38:40Speaker 6: Yeah, you know the rules of the rules I think
- 38:42Speaker 6: of when to post and how to post. It never
- 38:44Speaker 6: really be any different if you know something to be true.
- 38:47Speaker 6: That's when you posted I heard that's what.
- 38:49Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 38:50Speaker 6: But I do appreciate people wanting information. I am so
- 38:53Speaker 6: please don't misunderstand. I want people to get information and
- 38:56Speaker 6: quickly and quickly, especially if it has something to do
- 39:00Speaker 6: with their safety. But when you don't know and you
- 39:02Speaker 6: start lobbing things into the air, it certainly scares folks.
- 39:06Speaker 6: Fortunately for us, no one was injured. It was an
- 39:09Speaker 6: unfortunate but you know, successful drill and exercise that these
- 39:13Speaker 6: poor children had to go through. And administrators, but we
- 39:16Speaker 6: should be doing that, by the way. You know, we
- 39:18Speaker 6: do it at law enforcement, we do it all the time.
- 39:20Speaker 6: We do it in city Hall, we do it across
- 39:22Speaker 6: the city. By the way, we had an exercise that
- 39:24Speaker 6: happened last friday. We were going through some drills as
- 39:27Speaker 6: well as we do with our homeland security team. Those
- 39:29Speaker 6: are the things that I can promise you will continue
- 39:32Speaker 6: to happen because when the temperature gets very high and
- 39:35Speaker 6: people get anxious, first responders have to remain calm and cool.
- 39:40Speaker 6: That's why we say it.
- 39:41Speaker 3: All right, City Council is tonight and there is I
- 39:46Speaker 3: think you're going to be talking about a bill about
- 39:50Speaker 3: rec centers and a fee or something talk about them.
- 39:53Speaker 6: Yeah. Sure. So here's the good news. The good news
- 39:56Speaker 6: is we have over the past handful of years put
- 39:59Speaker 6: in more than twenty million dollars in our parking rex facilities.
- 40:03Speaker 6: That's the good news. The good news is kids have better,
- 40:06Speaker 6: safer places to play with upgraded equipment. Every year we
- 40:11Speaker 6: invest more and more into our kids because that was
- 40:13Speaker 6: a promise we made and a promise we kept. However,
- 40:17Speaker 6: when you when you start to invest and you have
- 40:20Speaker 6: all of these new shiny toys, everyone wants to participate.
- 40:23Speaker 6: That's what we want. By the way, we don't make
- 40:25Speaker 6: money off of our parking rec center, so let me
- 40:27Speaker 6: go ahead and also state that to you, Dave. But
- 40:30Speaker 6: what we've needed to do is be a little bit
- 40:31Speaker 6: more clear if you'd like to rent the field, if
- 40:34Speaker 6: you'd like to rent. You know, we have now disc
- 40:37Speaker 6: golf course competitions that come in. It's a new thing
- 40:41Speaker 6: for me. I'm understanding it little by little every day,
- 40:44Speaker 6: but we're getting inundated. That is a good thing. With
- 40:47Speaker 6: requests to host softball tournaments, baseball leagues, which is fabulous.
- 40:52Speaker 6: You know, basketball leagues are coming in and we want
- 40:54Speaker 6: to accommodate everyone. We just need to make sure that
- 40:57Speaker 6: our rules are a little tightened up. We also need
- 41:00Speaker 6: to make sure that oh, by the way, I still
- 41:01Speaker 6: have to clean, I still have to returf, I still
- 41:04Speaker 6: have to have our team there lad into the evening.
- 41:08Speaker 6: And so we need to make sure that we are investing,
- 41:11Speaker 6: putting back into the usage of those fields and courts
- 41:14Speaker 6: and golf courses and areas as well. But as you
- 41:19Speaker 6: will note tonight that we will as counsel and of
- 41:22Speaker 6: course our Parking res Chairwoman Caitlin Cook and others who
- 41:26Speaker 6: have really helped us along the way. Council Member Chad
- 41:29Speaker 6: Robinson also on Parking Rex is that we are being
- 41:33Speaker 6: accommodating and fair. I don't want to charge somebody. I
- 41:35Speaker 6: don't want to charge the little team who's coming into practice.
- 41:39Speaker 6: We want to make sure that still if you are
- 41:42Speaker 6: coming in for individual use of things, that it is
- 41:45Speaker 6: that it is free. That if you want to throw
- 41:47Speaker 6: a golf you know, bag on your back, and you
- 41:49Speaker 6: want to go out with your kids, it is free
- 41:51Speaker 6: still to do those things in the City of Charleston.
- 41:54Speaker 6: When you're swimming, we want kids swimming during the summer.
- 41:57Speaker 6: We want to make sure those things are free. But
- 41:59Speaker 6: as we know when we started to invest in the fields,
- 42:02Speaker 6: this is big money and so we have to make
- 42:04Speaker 6: sure that if there are teams coming into play, that
- 42:07Speaker 6: we have good guidelines that we're going to follow. And
- 42:10Speaker 6: so you'll watch that pass through tonight.
- 42:13Speaker 3: Texas. Can you ask the mayor for an update on
- 42:15Speaker 3: the Capital Connector project?
- 42:16Speaker 6: Yes, thank you so much. So, as you well know,
- 42:20Speaker 6: this is an amazing twenty seven million dollar project at
- 42:24Speaker 6: the end of the day, from Magic Island to the
- 42:26Speaker 6: thirty fifth Street Bridge. We are enhancing our riverfront. It
- 42:31Speaker 6: has sorely needed it for so many years. It's an
- 42:33Speaker 6: area of our city where it is highly used but
- 42:37Speaker 6: has been underdeveloped, if you will. And so we are
- 42:41Speaker 6: getting ready to break ground in a couple of months
- 42:44Speaker 6: on this and just working of course with our federal
- 42:47Speaker 6: highway partners and of course the state of West Virginia
- 42:50Speaker 6: to make sure that we have more, safer, better lit
- 42:55Speaker 6: bicycle walking lanes. You know, I was on a motorcycle
- 43:01Speaker 6: by the way I heard this week kind on the
- 43:03Speaker 6: bull of Art.
- 43:05Speaker 2: It was fun, but.
- 43:07Speaker 6: That boulevard, as we should we're a river city, we
- 43:10Speaker 6: should be using the Riverfront and now we are investing
- 43:14Speaker 6: fortunate to leave with a lot of our federal partners
- 43:17Speaker 6: the dollars that we've needed to really upgrade that area.
- 43:20Speaker 3: I'm going to take a break, and then I got
- 43:22Speaker 3: a couple more questions for you. The Dave Allen Show

- 44:23Speaker 20: abandoned our West Virginia traditional Christian family values, is ranked
- 44:27Speaker 20: as one of the top insider traders in the US Senate,
- 44:29Speaker 20: and instead of negotiating for West Virginia families, got her

- 45:42Speaker 3: Check them out this Saturday nights at Ribfest in Marmatt's
- 45:47Speaker 3: Amus Steel Band Charles Mary Amy Schuler Good One is
- 45:50Speaker 3: here for the Mayor, Texas. Seventh Avenue medians in North
- 45:54Speaker 3: Charleston need mode. The grass is close to hip level.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Those Seventh Avenue Medians are in a city responsible, but
- 46:00Speaker 3: it's an entrance to the city. I know it's a
- 46:02Speaker 3: poor area in an area in your chemical plant. So
- 46:04Speaker 3: it's likely why the state neglects. And however it's an
- 46:06Speaker 3: entrance to the city and its maintenance, or like there
- 46:08Speaker 3: are reflects on the city maybe pressure of the state,
- 46:11Speaker 3: so that part of the city doesn't seem so neglected.
- 46:13Speaker 6: Thank you so much.
- 46:14Speaker 3: She's taking notes speak literally in texting.
- 46:17Speaker 6: Andrew also just to make sure that we put a
- 46:20Speaker 6: note on that as well and put in our Q
- 46:21Speaker 6: alert system. Thank you for the call. Appreciate it, you know,
- 46:24Speaker 6: I will say it's it's the season. Tis the season.
- 46:27Speaker 6: We're going to get a lot of high grass calls,
- 46:29Speaker 6: a lot of mowing calls, and we get to them
- 46:31Speaker 6: as fast, I promise you as we possibly possibly can.
- 46:34Speaker 6: We work as best as we can with partners. You know,
- 46:36Speaker 6: when I first became mayor, I said, I don't want
- 46:38Speaker 6: it to be the first thing you respond to somebody
- 46:41Speaker 6: is by saying, well, that's a state road, or that's
- 46:43Speaker 6: a federal issue, or that's not a If you live
- 46:45Speaker 6: in the city of Charleston and you work in the
- 46:46Speaker 6: City of Charleston, it's an our issue. And so that's
- 46:49Speaker 6: why we have really maintained and house, really good relationships
- 46:54Speaker 6: with folks at a federal level on a state level,
- 46:56Speaker 6: because listen and Nate and they with us because like it,
- 46:59Speaker 6: levet or hate it, we have to get along. We
- 47:01Speaker 6: have to work together. And that's what's always missing at
- 47:04Speaker 6: this time of year, is that what happens in the
- 47:07Speaker 6: real work of municipal government and state government and federal government.
- 47:12Speaker 8: It's work. That's what we do.
- 47:14Speaker 6: There's no yelling, no screaming, no adds, no funny stuff
- 47:18Speaker 6: going on.
- 47:18Speaker 3: It's work.
- 47:19Speaker 6: It's when you when you know, what are you doing
- 47:21Speaker 6: with your crews? What roads are you hitting? First, we're
- 47:23Speaker 6: getting to do a massive paving project, the largest one
- 47:26Speaker 6: we've had in a long time. Guess who we have
- 47:28Speaker 6: to work with because there are partners, the state and
- 47:31Speaker 6: the federal we have to and so it is imperative
- 47:35Speaker 6: that we have good relationships. So when we call and say, hey,
- 47:38Speaker 6: seventh Avenue, where's it on your list? And oh, by
- 47:40Speaker 6: the way, we have MOUs We have agreements as well
- 47:45Speaker 6: with the state because we're good partners and they're good partners,
- 47:49Speaker 6: and we try to really make sure that we're helping
- 47:51Speaker 6: each other out when when we can. But also our
- 47:54Speaker 6: guys and gals are running nine ways to Sunday, especially
- 47:57Speaker 6: when Mother Nature reigns, and during this time of year,
- 48:00Speaker 6: everything does. I bet you it is probably up to
- 48:02Speaker 6: your head.

- 48:15Speaker 3: All right, I've only had about five minutes, actually less
- 48:17Speaker 3: than five minutes of the show. Early voting is going
- 48:20Speaker 3: on now. Election Day is one week from tomorrow. You're
- 48:24Speaker 3: on a ballot. You have opposition in the Democratic primary.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Why should someone vote to re elect Amy Goodwin?
- 48:32Speaker 6: Well, it might be the you know, maybe I'll start
- 48:35Speaker 6: with the last thing that I just said. It is
- 48:37Speaker 6: about partnerships. It is about maintaining and creating and hosting
- 48:42Speaker 6: good partnerships. By the way, that is not you know,
- 48:45Speaker 6: I'm not just representing Democrats. I'm not just representing Republicans
- 48:50Speaker 6: or independence. I'm representing everyone. Good partnerships through the federal government,
- 48:55Speaker 6: through our state government, you know, having worked in this
- 48:58Speaker 6: system a long time, it is important. It is important
- 49:03Speaker 6: to know who you can call, who you can partner with,
- 49:05Speaker 6: and the things that we can build and grow upon.
- 49:08Speaker 6: You know, I'm really proud of the things that we
- 49:10Speaker 6: have done. And as I have said to you, Dave
- 49:13Speaker 6: many many a time, I think this is a sprint
- 49:17Speaker 6: and I feel like I have as much energy as
- 49:20Speaker 6: I did when I first started. I have more information,
- 49:24Speaker 6: that's for sure than when I first started. The things
- 49:27Speaker 6: that we said that we were going to do, we did.
- 49:30Speaker 6: We continued to work on other things that we said
- 49:33Speaker 6: we're going to swing. We're going to swing. By the way,
- 49:36Speaker 6: not every single thing that we have tried new ideas
- 49:40Speaker 6: have been successful. But the thing I'm most proud about is,
- 49:44Speaker 6: and I say it a lot, I am only one
- 49:47Speaker 6: of seven hundred plus employees. I get a lot of
- 49:49Speaker 6: credit because you know, they put my picture on the
- 49:52Speaker 6: wall and they put my name on the stationery. But
- 49:55Speaker 6: I feel like I have been a very good team
- 49:58Speaker 6: member to this team we have in the city of Charleston.
- 50:02Speaker 6: Hiring and working and surrounding yourself with really competent, really
- 50:07Speaker 6: good people who are as we just said, calm, cool, collected,
- 50:11Speaker 6: who understand finance, who understand process, who understand how to
- 50:16Speaker 6: work through legislation, who understand the partnerships that you need
- 50:20Speaker 6: to have to get things done. And so I'm a
- 50:23Speaker 6: big believer in momentum matters. You know, the city of
- 50:27Speaker 6: Charleston has seen the type of growth we haven't seen
- 50:30Speaker 6: in a very long period of time. And something that
- 50:33Speaker 6: folks rarely talk about is our financial position in the
- 50:36Speaker 6: city of Charleston is the best it has been in decades,
- 50:41Speaker 6: plural decades. And that's something I'm incredibly, incredibly proud about.
- 50:47Speaker 6: And it is because we have been thoughtful, We take
- 50:50Speaker 6: our time, and we do the really hard lifting of
- 50:54Speaker 6: the very heavy work that needs to happen. And also,
- 50:58Speaker 6: I love this city. I think of the people who
- 51:01Speaker 6: live here as my family. There's not one area of
- 51:03Speaker 6: the community I can't walk down the street and know somebody.
- 51:07Speaker 6: It's not opinion, that's just a fact. I've been in
- 51:10Speaker 6: every single part of this city. I've walked all of
- 51:14Speaker 6: the roads in this city. It's thirty three square miles
- 51:17Speaker 6: and I love each and every piece of it. You know,
- 51:21Speaker 6: this is my final sprint of this election, and this
- 51:26Speaker 6: is my final sprint.
- 51:27Speaker 2: In this job.
- 51:28Speaker 6: I have loved it and I want to do it
- 51:30Speaker 6: one more.
- 51:31Speaker 3: Time and this is it after this term if you win,
- 51:34Speaker 3: this is it right?
- 51:35Speaker 6: In this job, yes, sir.
- 51:36Speaker 3: In this job interesting? Okay, Choleson Mary Amy Schulder a
- 51:40Speaker 3: good one. Always ask all the candidates you have a
- 51:42Speaker 3: for your campaign, a Facebook page or a website or yeah,
- 51:45Speaker 3: I sure do.
- 51:45Speaker 6: You can find me on Facebook. Amy, good one for Charleston.
- 51:48Speaker 3: All right, may I appreciate it?
- 51:50Speaker 6: Thank you so much.
