- 0:45What is going on, everybody?
- 0:46Welcome to Thursday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 0:48We are live on a Thursday night.
- 0:51And I have to start this week's show with another game show gripe.
- 0:55Okay.
- 0:57And I have to get off my chest.
- 0:59I just have to.
- 1:00Okay.
- 1:02I took Tuesday off from work.
- 1:04It was the day after my birthday.
- 1:07And I just wanted a day to myself to watch whatever I wanted to.
- 1:11And I'm watching The Price is Right.
- 1:16Who in their right mind bids $1 with two bidders left?
- 1:23Oh, yeah, that's just silly.
- 1:25It's not a race to get to say $1.
- 1:27No.
- 1:29Because the next guy can go $2.
- 1:30Yeah.
- 1:33And if you're smart, you will.
- 1:34Well, not if you're the third.
- 1:36You wait, but.
- 1:38So this guy was on and he either bet the $1 or like the 501.
- 1:46on every every showcase and didn't get out out didn't get out at all stuck there the whole time i'm glad he was stuck there at least lex last week it was jeopardy no it wasn't jeopardy it was wheel of fortune the people who buy all the vows now tonight on wheel of fortune right before i came down here
- 2:12a lady did that where you like the game freezes and you just get to call out consonants to build up a bank.
- 2:19And then you can solve the puzzle.
- 2:21Once the, the thing's over, she wanted to solve in the middle of it.
- 2:26And like, that's like, that's like, no, you get to build money.
- 2:28You're not spinning.
- 2:29So you can't go bankrupt.
- 2:31Like keep making the money.
- 2:33Oh boy.
- 2:35Where do they find these people?
- 2:37Yeah, that's a good question.
- 2:39For 2024, get on a game show.
- 2:43Yeah, I always thought being on Family Feud would be just, that would be it, man.
- 2:50If I got on Family Feud with my family, it would end in a feud.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:55I could see that.
- 2:56Not the good one.
- 2:57Yeah.
- 3:02The problem with if you took Aaron on, like the two of you would debate what the answer should be when they come to you for that.
- 3:09Like, can you steal?
- 3:11You would debate for a good 30 minutes on what the answer should be.
- 3:15Yep.
- 3:15You're right.
- 3:16You're right.
- 3:19Um, so Lex did say Scott and his prices, right?
- 3:22Saga.
- 3:23Um, Sarah, I watch prices, right?
- 3:26Every time I'm homesick, no other time, pretty much me too.
- 3:29And I work from home.
- 3:30Like literally I could like flick it on behind me and have it on during the workday, but I just don't, but I do tend to watch it on my days off, which is odd.
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:43That's, I mean, that's respectful of you for, for your job.
- 3:49Yeah, Andrew, Jeopardy is a show lately that I just don't miss unless we're going out to dinner with friends, things like that.
- 4:00But I do try to watch it just about every night.
- 4:03And Lex says, oh, it's okay.
- 4:06I'm the same with Judge Judy.
- 4:11So, yeah.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:15I know I used to work with, when I worked in the office, Judge Judy Fanatics.
- 4:20They actually had like an antenna TV in the break room and they would put it on during lunch and like the floor would just empty.
- 4:29Wow.
- 4:30It was crazy.
- 4:32I just feel like those courtroom shows are so scripted.
- 4:40Sometimes you're watching and you're like, really?
- 4:42You don't think Judy's laying down the justice?
- 4:47No.
- 4:52That or same thing, where are they finding these people?
- 4:54Because holy cow.
- 4:59I don't know.
- 5:00I think like if you're trusting these judge shows to like rule on a true legal matter.
- 5:06Yeah.
- 5:10Yeah.
- 5:11Yeah.
- 5:14All right.
- 5:15So this is not called Thursday night game show talk or judge show talk.
- 5:23But they keep coming.
- 5:24Sarah says Maureen maternity tests are hilarious.
- 5:30And that is not fake.
- 5:38Yeah.
- 5:42Yeah, that and Jerry Springer.
- 5:43Holy smokes.
- 5:45Rest in peace, Jerry Springer.
- 5:46Hello, Ohioan.
- 5:51former mayor of Cincinnati, where Andrew Sten currently resides.
- 5:57Shout out.
- 6:00So yeah, we are a CrossFit show.
- 6:03We're going to talk some CrossFit stuff.
- 6:06A bunch of stuff came down today.
- 6:07I threw you a text because like every Thursday.
- 6:10So I try to start the notes earlier in the week.
- 6:15Of course, I'm a protagonist or whatever.
- 6:20procrastinator and um i'm loading it all up today and uh and then more breaking news and more breaking news and more breaking news i'm like oh my gosh so we're going to start with um crossfit announced a partnership with goruck now after the announcement yesterday many people believed that this announcement was going to be that they were going to become the new title sponsor
- 6:49Nowhere in this announcement does it say that GORUCK is a title sponsor.
- 6:54It is just the official apparel and footwear partner of CrossFit and the CrossFit Games.
- 7:03It does have an interesting caveat in here.
- 7:08The partnership will see GORUCK launch a new CrossFit branded apparel line while delivering apparel and footwear to all CrossFit seminar staff.
- 7:18complimenting the partnership, CrossFit trainers who hold a level one training certificate or higher or have access to exclusive programs, discounts, and other benefits with the brand.
- 7:31The heart of GORUCK is the community.
- 7:34The people who have been with us since the beginning, pushing themselves, being better and serving others, said Jason McCarthy, founder and
- 7:42And while the community has evolved, the pillars on which it exists are the same.
- 7:46These pillars and commitment to the community are the collective tissue with CrossFit, which is why I'm confident this will be a successful relationship for years to come.
- 8:00And there is an aspect of this that is reaching out to the affiliates.
- 8:05Okay.
- 8:08And I'm trying to find that.
- 8:11As part of this, the other Jim Letchford.
- 8:20Yeah, Jimmy Letchford.
- 8:21Yeah, I saw that.
- 8:22Jimmy Letchford.
- 8:23He actually says, it is about apparel and shoes, but it's more about deepening existing communities through shared missions.
- 8:37And
- 8:44then they just give some of timmy's uh credentials yeah it's interesting because i can't imagine goruck is i i guess i don't know a whole lot about their clothing um and beyond and i saw like some of their t-shirts that they were showing there but like
- 9:08Do they have men's shorts and women's shorts and leggings?
- 9:11And are they going to outfit the kit for the games athletes?
- 9:17I believe that is going to be the case.
- 9:20So I do know that they sponsored Emily Rolfe through last season.
- 9:26She wore all of their apparel at semifinals in Pasadena.
- 9:30Mm-hmm.
- 9:32Um, and, uh, she did have shoes, um, that were made for her to CrossFit in and she helped because she was one of their first athletes.
- 9:43She got to help develop them.
- 9:46I've actually heard good things about their shoes.
- 9:48Although, man, I think that's a, I don't know if that's the route to go down is to force the shoes on all the athletes.
- 9:56I actually think that was a good thing of going away from that.
- 9:59Um, yeah.
- 10:00So to hear that they're the footwear and clothing sponsor gives me a bit of pause.
- 10:08Lex, I'm excited here too.
- 10:10They don't have lifters unless they make them.
- 10:12So like, yeah, right there, another piece of,
- 10:17outsourced branding that's going to have to come in and, and maybe that's the compromise that's for lifting events or whatever.
- 10:26That's when you can wear a different shoe.
- 10:28But other than that, you got to wear these shoes.
- 10:30Um, it's just, I find it, I find it interesting to force athletes into shoes.
- 10:39Like everyone's feet are different.
- 10:44I don't believe that that changed in the rule book when we went over it last week.
- 10:51The caveat about that you have to wear the apparel excluding footwear.
- 10:59I think that's still in the rule book.
- 11:01Okay.
- 11:03Because we would have gone over it had it changed.
- 11:08Correct.
- 11:09And we didn't really do that.
- 11:13And so I don't remember that change in the rule book at all.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:17So yeah, maybe it'll be something you see on just like the volunteers and it does just say seminar staff, which is different than like all your judges out there.
- 11:28That's not all seminar staff.
- 11:32But yeah, I don't know.
- 11:34I'll have to go back and look at their clothing a little bit more.
- 11:36It'd be nice to go back to some
- 11:39bolder colors i always like that about the reebok games and it's not that i love bolder colors but it allowed you to differentiate the athletes because they had a wide variety of colors to choose from every year and just by chance you usually got different combinations that you were able to tell who was who exactly um
- 12:06that was my beef during the noble years is one, the name was so small on the Jersey.
- 12:13And then, um, and you couldn't tell who was who because the combinations couldn't get very varied, um, with what they had to choose from.
- 12:25Yep.
- 12:29So, but traditionally GORUCK is green, brown, white, black.
- 12:37Right.
- 12:39And not like neon green.
- 12:42No.
- 12:42We're talking like army green.
- 12:44Yeah.
- 12:46So, but it doesn't mean they're not open to brighter colors for this aspect of it.
- 12:54It also says in here, I was reading as you were talking, that the partnership is really only the three shoes.
- 13:01It is the CrossFit shoe, the ballistic trainer, and their ultra-supportive rough runner shoes.
- 13:07Okay.
- 13:12So, Kenneth says, watch the 2019 Games doc this past weekend.
- 13:20Uniforms were choice.
- 13:21Mm-hmm.
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:26Yeah, I agree, Megan.
- 13:28Their website is still a lot of neutral colors.
- 13:30I remember when they were kind of introduced to Rogue in 21?
- 13:3620 or 21?
- 13:36It was 21.
- 13:38And they had a booth where the athletes came to collect some gear that they had made for them.
- 13:47And it was all the neutral colors.
- 13:53But it doesn't mean they're not willing to change.
- 13:55Yeah.
- 13:56Maybe they'll hear some feedback and migrate that way.
- 14:00Yeah.
- 14:06So, uh, interesting asks, uh, sure.
- 14:09If I can get it to show, um, they did the, Nope.
- 14:13That's not what Andrew said.
- 14:14That's what Sarah said.
- 14:16So, um, Sarah says they did the custom rock for mayhem last year with the flag inside.
- 14:22I think they did.
- 14:23You are correct on that.
- 14:26Um, and then Anderson, I wonder if their deal covers other events.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31Nothing in the press release about that.
- 14:35Um,
- 14:38And then Megan says like, they expect us to get muddy.
- 14:42That's a different sport.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:47All right, so that was one of the things that came out today.
- 14:50The other thing is the first exemption has been released, and it went to Roman Krennikoff.
- 14:57He is going to compete, and this is all via the barbell spin, so you can check the full story out there for that.
- 15:05Roman is going to compete in the North America East semifinal again this season and will not have to return to...
- 15:15Asia to compete in any aspect this year.
- 15:22If you read the full article on the barbell spin, there are some questions as to how Roman actually qualifies based on the bullet points of the new rule book.
- 15:37And it is a little like because
- 15:43would not have to return home uh there are no because of the visa he possesses there are no longer visa issues so why is it that he has granted an exemption when it doesn't meet anything in the bullets of the rule book
- 16:02not trying to be negative here.
- 16:04Just, uh, I think Brian spin wrote the article.
- 16:09He brought this up at the end of it.
- 16:11Um, it doesn't seem very transparent when Roman doesn't meet those criteria that are set forth or even the new criteria of being a resident here for three years.
- 16:24He hasn't quite made it there yet.
- 16:26He's only at two.
- 16:30Yeah, interesting.
- 16:34Somebody else is going to apply and get denied, and then there's going to be a whole fight over that.
- 16:42What seemed last year, they were handing out exemptions like Oprah was handing out cars back in the day.
- 16:51You get an exemption, and you get an exemption, and you get an exemption.
- 16:54So...
- 17:02I just wanted to go back with the sponsorship.
- 17:05Do you feel like there's not going to be a title sponsor?
- 17:11That logo that they released, do you think that's just like a G, trying to look like a G for the games?
- 17:18Or do you think there's still a logo to go inside that and there is going to be a title sponsor?
- 17:22The logo is up next.
- 17:28I'm just kidding you.
- 17:32It is toward the bottom, yeah.
- 17:38I do not know.
- 17:41I don't know what game we're playing because I don't think they planned on announcing this today with GORUCK.
- 17:51It's only because someone screwed up and put them on the website prior to the announcement being made that they had to hurry up and get the announcement out.
- 18:04And maybe it's a different... If you actually read when they released the logo, which we can talk about now too as well, the G stands for something else.
- 18:16There was a full explanation as to what that whole logo stood for.
- 18:21And it was supposed to be... It was supposed to represent like a shield.
- 18:27Okay.
- 18:28Okay.
- 18:29of protection and that the athletes can overcome that at times.
- 18:36And that's why CrossFit games is leaking out of the shield.
- 18:42And then the G I don't think it's for games.
- 18:45I think it's, it's something that made less sense.
- 18:55to me.
- 18:57But they did have a full explanation as to every aspect of that logo and what it stood for, what it meant.
- 19:05And the G was not for GORUCK.
- 19:10It was not for Glock, as many people said on my Instagram.
- 19:15It was not for Glassman Kenneth.
- 19:18It actually had some kind of like
- 19:23esoterical meaning behind the whole thing.
- 19:29Interesting.
- 19:31And I guess, I guess if I was doing my due diligence, I could pull it up and tell you what it means.
- 19:38So let's, you keep talking about your logo and I will pull that up real quick.
- 19:42Yeah.
- 19:43Show the show to the audience, this fancy dancy logo.
- 19:48It's, it's something I, it,
- 19:51At very first glance, it looked a little more primitive-ish to me, but the way CrossFit Games is written in there, I just can't see that even being a possibility.
- 20:01I can see the shield aspect, and that's always sort of been a backbone of the games.
- 20:09So, if I stand corrected, it is a crest.
- 20:12Yeah, yeah.
- 20:14It is the new CrossFit Games modular logo system includes a logo, a crest, a monogram, and even a short name logo format based on how the CrossFit community refers to various stages of the season.
- 20:30The core of the new logo system is the CrossFit Games logo which overlays the crest.
- 20:36The crest significance as an image of protection and movement is symbolic of CrossFit more broadly and how it protects its practitioners from poor health and moves us toward fitness.
- 20:52Diaz also added, it forms a G shape with its open right side where the game's logo is set just outside the shield, which is symbolic of how CrossFit breaks the mold.
- 21:04Remains against the grain and creates a community that values movement and openness.
- 21:12But they never say what the G is for.
- 21:15Games.
- 21:15I mean, if you think about us breaking down the season.
- 21:19And I will pull it up here in a second.
- 21:21Yes.
- 21:25It's something.
- 21:36There it is, people.
- 21:41There it is, Jody.
- 21:42Ta-da!
- 21:44Take it all in.
- 21:44Yeah.
- 21:55Agree, Andrew.
- 21:56It is a lot of explanation behind something that really should just grab you.
- 22:03I don't know that it just grabs you.
- 22:11I hate the font.
- 22:13The font is just boring.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:18I think out of all of it, I don't like the games the most.
- 22:23Games in 2024.
- 22:23Yep.
- 22:26Could be a little bit better.
- 22:30I'm okay with your crest and your shield and, and the G or whatever, but games in 2024 is so bad.
- 22:40It looks weak.
- 22:41It looks weak.
- 22:42It does look a little weak.
- 22:44I, so I, I get their crest type shield type idea.
- 22:48I mean, cause even the 24, that's kind of always been the thing, right?
- 22:54Between behind the logo.
- 22:56But I think that had like a bolder disposition about it.
- 23:01Like you just, I don't know, it stood out to you.
- 23:04This is how simple and effective, Ken.
- 23:10I don't know.
- 23:13You look at the CrossFit font and it is bold.
- 23:16It is strong.
- 23:18It is all the things that were described in that press release, right?
- 23:23Of breaking through and protecting and all of that stuff.
- 23:28This one, the games, is not that.
- 23:34It's thin.
- 23:35It is.
- 23:37It doesn't look strong.
- 23:38It looks weak to me.
- 23:41That's my problem.
- 23:42And then one of our listeners on Instagram said that it was an homage to Noble saying goodbye to them, but using their style.
- 23:57Carolyn Prevost, I thought it was green though.
- 24:00This is straight from the press release, Carolyn.
- 24:07Straight from the press release.
- 24:09And it is just the logo with no background.
- 24:13So you could pop it on whatever color you wanted, I guess.
- 24:19And I know Spin put out a green one, but that did not come with the press release.
- 24:31Megan, the more I look, the more I just like it.
- 24:34Yeah.
- 24:35That's not good.
- 24:39Yeah.
- 24:40And they'll still sell a bunch of shirts.
- 24:43Yeah.
- 24:44Well, I don't know.
- 24:46Is that, where's that logo really going?
- 24:48Like what go rock put out is just your typical CrossFit shirts and they look great.
- 24:54So maybe they just avoid using the logo.
- 24:59So Carolyn says their logo on Instagram is green though and looks better.
- 25:06Okay.
- 25:07They should have sent that out to the media as a green logo then.
- 25:10Yeah.
- 25:12If that was their intent.
- 25:16And like Holly says, with black and white, you get to save on printing costs.
- 25:20It's cheaper to print in black and white.
- 25:25yeah it is um do you guys see it you probably can't see the color it's like a yellowish green when you bring it up it's green but the writing is um what like white crossfit green logo it doesn't for me for me personally and i and i i put out the poll without saying anything about it myself
- 25:51I let you, the viewers and the fans, tell us what it was that you liked or disliked.
- 25:59And it was 75% did not like it.
- 26:0225% did.
- 26:05Even in green, it doesn't change the font piece for me.
- 26:10Yeah, agreed.
- 26:14Or even the G is very thin.
- 26:16Yeah.
- 26:21And Carolyn says, we'll get used to it and it'll be fine.
- 26:25I'm sure it will be.
- 26:26But it's the offseason.
- 26:27We have nothing else to talk about.
- 26:30There will be a new logo next year.
- 26:33Don't get too used to it.
- 26:40I did hear a rumor that they were going for something more simple so that if title sponsors changed, if we have title sponsors, it would be an easier switch.
- 27:00So there's that.
- 27:01So we've hit the logo and the Roman thing.
- 27:10and the GORUCK thing.
- 27:13So this week, so before we get into that, I did a riff yesterday about the Masters.
- 27:27I've given guests on the show, even before my riff, that have won Legends the opportunity to talk about it.
- 27:37I understand that this puts you in a very difficult situation.
- 27:40And if you don't want to talk about it on the air, I completely understand.
- 27:46You know, I don't mind talking about it.
- 27:47And I'm probably one of the more vocal ones.
- 27:51I was one of the ones that had reached out to grub.
- 27:55And I,
- 27:57And I realize like most, I think most athletes will kind of bite their tongue and not say much.
- 28:03And like, nobody wants to look like the bad guy or talk down about anybody.
- 28:08And in the same vein, when we're talking about GORUCK being a kit sponsor, probably, and then a title sponsor, I think like that kind of designation is what probably had me
- 28:26had and has me a little frustrated with legends.
- 28:31We were told that first form was a title sponsor.
- 28:36And to me, there's such a thing as clothing or footwear sponsorship and title sponsorship.
- 28:46And so maybe maybe this is new to them.
- 28:50I don't know.
- 28:50But I feel like maybe they should have just said first form is our
- 28:55kit sponsor, your, your clothing sponsor for the year, because I felt like first form was jumping in with like a decent chunk of money.
- 29:03And that's probably how we were going to get paid.
- 29:06Um,
- 29:08Quite honestly, I think there's a lot, and I may be over speaking for this, so I don't know.
- 29:14Other people can comment on this.
- 29:15But I feel like there's quite a few people who would prefer not to get clothes and wear their own clothing.
- 29:24There's a lot of athletes that don't even wear the clothes that are given to them, even though Legends is like, hey.
- 29:33wear the clothes.
- 29:34You have to wear the clothes.
- 29:35Please wear the clothes.
- 29:35And they still go put on different shorts, different tops.
- 29:39Like they clearly don't want to wear their clothes.
- 29:42I don't think taking away the clothes is necessarily the idea because that is an exciting thing to get.
- 29:47Like the kit is, it does make you feel like you're getting something.
- 29:52They were trying to make it more games like when you walk in and you get that big
- 29:58bag of stuff and get your picture taken.
- 30:00So like, I'm not saying that that that isn't something that should be provided.
- 30:04I do think that's a great aspect.
- 30:07But maybe it needs to be labeled as such that they're the kit or clothing sponsor.
- 30:12And that's it.
- 30:14Because I think when we heard title sponsor, we just thought there was probably more behind that.
- 30:22And let's add a piece to this.
- 30:26Joe was on our show.
- 30:27They eliminated the telecast, which was a major expense.
- 30:32So when you hear that as well, the anticipation is that that money was where they were getting their cost savings to not go out of pocket anymore.
- 30:46In my opinion, and this is where I don't want you to talk, is that by putting the competitors last on your priority list is where things are falling short.
- 31:02It happened, and this is not just legends, so I'm not picking on them.
- 31:06And again, they were awesome to us when we were there.
- 31:11I got access I've never got before.
- 31:14But what you've done, you're setting a precedence that the athlete doesn't matter.
- 31:21And it's happened at MFC.
- 31:23It's happened at Legends.
- 31:25And it's happening again.
- 31:26Even though they're going to get paid out at Waterpalooza, they are not being treated like an athlete who is paying the same entry fee as the elite athletes are.
- 31:39If you want to make them a community athlete, then you discount the amount that they need to pay to be there.
- 31:49Where we have gone is the Masters, especially 35 to 49, is your cash cow.
- 32:02It is your cash cow for everything, for everybody.
- 32:07It's their open...
- 32:09money, their quarterfinal money that's funding a lot of what's going forward because it is 50% plus of the open population.
- 32:21And I've talked to some athletes where they're to a point where they're just accepting it because that's the way it's always been.
- 32:38And I, it's funny you say this, Carolyn, because I was just saying this to Jamie before we went on the air.
- 32:45I think it's easier for Grubb to say he's not surprised or mad because he has the most sponsors out of anyone and isn't as concerned money-wise for comps.
- 32:55Exactly.
- 32:58But when you take someone like Jamie who's on the come up, who's trying to make a name for herself, one, you eliminate the broadcast so there's no way for anybody to get eyes on her.
- 33:09Two, you eliminate prize money to offset the cost for her to be there.
- 33:14At some point, it's better for her just to get on Instagram and do workouts in her gym than to go across the country
- 33:21because she's racked up five first places now, and I know I'm exaggerating, but she's built a resume.
- 33:29She needs exposure.
- 33:31She needs exposure to help her to continue to do this moving forward.
- 33:38And I want to be the one taking the heat for this, so that's why I'm saying it.
- 33:42I appreciate it.
- 33:43I, I'm not against saying it.
- 33:46I do like, I truly do think like you need, like they need to reevaluate their priorities.
- 33:53O'Keefe was, I think spot on.
- 33:55And we know that that guy knows how to run a comp and he basically had those sentiments like venue payout.
- 34:06then we get specific equipment or signage or what.
- 34:11Like, you got to really, like, set the budget.
- 34:13And I don't know if they need help from someone like O'Keefe to, like, help figure out a – and he had some ideas in there about, like, how sponsors, like – I don't know.
- 34:26You guys, that was a pretty good episode.
- 34:28I would go back and watch that.
- 34:29But he had some –
- 34:32On Talking Elite Fitness' channel, they talked about this this morning?
- 34:38It was yesterday, I believe.
- 34:39Yesterday, okay.
- 34:40Yesterday, and O'Keefe talked about how to put together a package.
- 34:49And I said to my riff, it should be one of the first things budgeted out.
- 34:55Right.
- 34:57Right?
- 34:57Right.
- 34:59Yeah, I mean, a lot of people, I've been kind of disappointed with, like, the response on Instagram in some of the posts.
- 35:07Just, like, people are, like, they didn't announce a payout, so I don't know why you guys are all getting butt hurt.
- 35:12And just, like, just saying we complained of a complaint.
- 35:17And I realize they didn't announce a payout, but they paid every year.
- 35:22And when you hear there's a new title sponsor and broadcasts, in your mind, you're like, oh, we're probably getting at least what we got last year then.
- 35:31You don't assume that it's going from payout to zero.
- 35:34And not only zero, nothing.
- 35:38I was pretty harsh on MFC, and we got stuff, which you talked about.
- 35:45Hopefully they get their...
- 35:47get some more payout and get their bills paid and have some leftover.
- 35:52And we do get a little something.
- 35:53I mean, that's really all we can hope for at this point.
- 35:55And I know they, I know they will try.
- 35:58I know they want to pay the athletes.
- 36:02It just sucks that I feel like the budget maybe wasn't budgeted out correctly.
- 36:10So there's a lot of comments here.
- 36:11Um, I'm going to start with Lex, uh, grubs comments as blanket statements for all masters was off putting.
- 36:20I agree with that wholeheartedly.
- 36:22And I love Jason.
- 36:23Um, I actually consider him to be a friend now.
- 36:26Um, and I'm hoping to have him on to kind of have this conversation a little further.
- 36:34Um,
- 36:36Andrew Sten says, O'Keefe was part of Waza for years.
- 36:39Masters were treated the same as they are now.
- 36:42I don't trust anything he says.
- 36:46Jody Lynn says, Masters need to collectively make a stink.
- 36:50It's so unfair.
- 36:54And then Lex and Carolyn kind of echo the same thing.
- 36:57Podium should at least get their registration back.
- 36:59At least, yeah.
- 37:00It was not cheap this year.
- 37:01That's another thing.
- 37:03Like, even that went up.
- 37:05It's...
- 37:06I think that's where things get muddied because mature Masters athletes aren't telling people what they had to pay to do this.
- 37:18Right.
- 37:20Right?
- 37:21Everybody's keeping it close to the vest, so nobody knows what the cost is to sign up for these competitions.
- 37:30Like Lex says, I can do without a name placard.
- 37:36And they didn't even use them at the event.
- 37:38Nope.
- 37:40So you pay for that.
- 37:42You have a two-story tall sticker that goes on the wall, but you don't have a broadcast to even show it.
- 37:51Yeah, completely unnecessary there.
- 37:55And I don't want to pick apart things because it was a good competition.
- 37:59They did treat us well.
- 38:02But...
- 38:04Doing simple math, I know what the registrations were.
- 38:10I know what the qualifiers were.
- 38:12And at a very, very conservative approach, you're talking well over $200,000 just in that coming in.
- 38:24Yep.
- 38:27And that is very conservative.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:34and you have first form as a sponsor you had what what what i'm trying to think of the sponsors now there were some big sponsors there there were some pretty big sponsors i just i think it puts a bad taste in some of the athletes mouths with first form being a title sponsor and then not like
- 39:01I don't know.
- 39:01Like, it's just weird.
- 39:03You, you would have expected a swag bag or something at the end of the weekend.
- 39:07If that, like, so I'm like that.
- 39:09So that's what your title sponsorship was.
- 39:15No, nothing like, no, that's what I'm saying.
- 39:19No.
- 39:23I, I didn't know any vendors that didn't pay.
- 39:27I think that got blown out of proportion.
- 39:29The email said they were still waiting on some payment and bills that they had to pay.
- 39:37That got taken as vendors didn't pay.
- 39:39I don't believe that is the case.
- 39:42Yeah.
- 39:43I think that little bit in the email got taken way out of context.
- 39:52I do think maybe some vendors backed out right before.
- 39:58I don't know.
- 40:01I don't know.
- 40:03There were quite a few.
- 40:05More than some of the old semifinals.
- 40:09Yeah.
- 40:13So... I don't know.
- 40:18It's just kind of baffling.
- 40:20Yeah.
- 40:21I know there's athletes that... It is.
- 40:24Because I know there's athletes that...
- 40:27Especially of the younger athletes that go, that go there for a prize purse.
- 40:35And to say that, like, we just do it for fun or the glory, like that, like you can't, you can't keep doing these just for the glory.
- 40:46I'm sorry.
- 40:46Like.
- 40:51That's gonna that's gonna be our new shirt for 2024.
- 40:55As we have no sponsors ourself.
- 40:57We're just doing it for the glory.
- 41:07Yeah, I did not see that Jody Lynn.
- 41:12Heller ripped their protein perhaps that an effect on first form finances.
- 41:17Yeah, he did kind of.
- 41:19In the same vein that he ripped Momentous, though, I actually think he went harder on Momentous.
- 41:26I think it's about what you want in your protein.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:30And Hiller may want one thing.
- 41:33Joe Average may want something else.
- 41:35Yeah.
- 41:38So, anyway, there's that.
- 41:42That's our negative portion of the show.
- 41:44We're now going to get positive a little bit.
- 41:49Well, Jody Lynn, like there are serious hardcore like bodybuilders or fitness people that want the purest protein you can possibly have.
- 42:01And some of us average Joes can't afford that.
- 42:04Like I can't sustain myself on that.
- 42:07Right.
- 42:08And so I'm looking for the best bang for my buck.
- 42:13So I have a different approach to it than a Hiller who can afford that kind of stuff right now.
- 42:23I actually think Hiller takes a price per serving view.
- 42:31He does a good job.
- 42:33He makes that caveat.
- 42:34I think he thinks it's ridiculous to pay $65 for a 30-serving canister of protein.
- 42:43that.
- 42:43Yeah.
- 42:45I mean, there's times I buy those little premier protein already made things just because they're easy.
- 42:53Like, and when, and when I'm on the road or I'm doing a bunch of stuff, I can just grab one, get my protein in.
- 43:05Uh, Travis doing the thrifty shopping for us, a Senate Costco four pound bag.
- 43:11Can't beat it.
- 43:12There you go.
- 43:14Balling on a budget.
- 43:17Yep.
- 43:18That's where I'm at.
- 43:22So we're going to talk Waterpalooza, and I know our guy Vindicate's going to be down there slinging some shirts, slinging some shorts, slinging some joggers, hopefully.
- 43:37Oh, yeah.
- 43:38And I know he had a huge year last year down at Waterpalooza.
- 43:43And hopefully they have even a bigger one this year.
- 43:46But we're going to talk about, it's going on in a week and a half.
- 43:50We're going to do wrap-up shows, not from Miami, from the comfort of our own home.
- 43:58And it's going to involve the whole crew.
- 44:02It's going to involve the roundtable crew and Jamie and I.
- 44:08Awesome.
- 44:10So we're going to we're going to hit you from weird times because we don't want to do it ultra late like we've always done it in the past.
- 44:18We're going to kind of hit you midday and we'll catch up from whatever we missed the next day and then so on.
- 44:24Right.
- 44:25And then probably do a big Monday wrap up of the whole doggone thing.
- 44:31so look for times on that once we get everybody scheduled um we will let you know what shows are available when and we'll put them out on youtube so you know what's going on so with that
- 44:45First thing I try to do is get who is confirmed to be there and competing.
- 44:51And so I have a quick list we'll go through.
- 44:53And then they have released some of the workouts.
- 44:55We'll go through them and let Jamie kind of take a peek at those and give her impressions as to what they look like this year.
- 45:05So with that, first of all, we have confirmed teams on the men's side that are team tier, which is Ricky Garrard, Fallon Pepper, and Jason Hopper.
- 45:18Team Gowad, Justin Medeiros, Willie Georges, and Jay Crouch.
- 45:25Very interesting team.
- 45:27Interesting, yes.
- 45:29Golden Oldies, Pat Vellner, Travis Mayer, Will Morad.
- 45:34What I find fascinating here is this.
- 45:36This is breaking up a lot of teams.
- 45:38I know.
- 45:41Right?
- 45:42But Pat and Travis together, and I love Will.
- 45:47So that team, I already love.
- 45:49Yeah.
- 45:52And then we have the Ombre Hombres, who have been doing kind of a world tour anyway.
- 45:59Yes.
- 46:00And that is Chandler Smith, Tola Moraquinho.
- 46:03And I never pronounced that right.
- 46:04And I apologize.
- 46:07And no Olson.
- 46:08Well, it's better than Down Under who they just say Moraquinho all the time.
- 46:12I'm like, you're not even close.
- 46:16I think it's Moraquinho.
- 46:18No, it's because I have said it wrong forever.
- 46:21And I always said it Moraquinho.
- 46:23It is Moraquinho.
- 46:25No.
- 46:25Yeah.
- 46:26Yeah.
- 46:28Oh, man.
- 46:30Yeah, that is the actual thing.
- 46:34So those are the four teams that have been confirmed by Wadapalooza.
- 46:39There is no leaderboard out there yet to check.
- 46:43So we can't even do that.
- 46:44But these are confirmed on their Instagram.
- 46:47One women's team, which is Team Ice Barrel, which is Brooke Wells, Paige Powers, and Bailey Rayl.
- 46:57Paige and Bailey don't surprise me.
- 47:00The Brookwell's aspect of that, a little bit of surprise.
- 47:04Yeah, interesting.
- 47:08But that is the only women's team that has been confirmed.
- 47:12And I will warn you, after being there last year, there were a lot of teams that changed lineups right before the team competition because people got hurt during the individual competition or withdrew for safety precautions or whatever.
- 47:30So Sarah Cooper says, guess they're winning.
- 47:34There's definitely more.
- 47:39So on the individual men's side, we have about seven, eight.
- 47:44And it is Roman Krennikoff, Brent Fikowski, Travis Mayer, Pat Vellner, Nick Matthew, Guy Mejeros, and Ricky Garrard.
- 47:57Pretty stacked lineup for only having eight names at this point.
- 48:06So Lex is trying to bring us some breaking news with her sleuthing.
- 48:12Did you see Brooke Wells doesn't tag Noble anymore from her last post?
- 48:17It looks like she may be Reebok now.
- 48:22Interesting.
- 48:25They all come back.
- 48:29She's got so much noble apparel, I can't even imagine.
- 48:38Now she'll have so much Reebok apparel, if that is in fact the case.
- 48:44But very interesting observation, Lex.
- 48:46Thank you.
- 48:49So Aaron brings up Colton.
- 48:51Kenneth brings up Colton.
- 48:53I know that Colton has said things.
- 48:56Wadapalooza has not confirmed him as an athlete.
- 48:59So I only grabbed who Wadapalooza has confirmed as an athlete.
- 49:11Sarah Cooper says, better check her local Goodwill soon.
- 49:16Yeah, she might as well just sell that stuff that she can make a small fortune, I think.
- 49:22Andrew Sten says, I saw a post that said Noble was ditching athletes.
- 49:27Would love to see Reebok back in CrossFit more.
- 49:30I agree.
- 49:31They have, I feel like they're still, Male is still wearing their stuff and Tia as well.
- 49:39Oh, Noble, yes.
- 49:41Yeah, so they have a couple that probably just,
- 49:46we're not into the new season yet.
- 49:51Yeah.
- 49:52I can't imagine they're going to ditch all their athletes.
- 49:54I mean, but they did have quite a few athletes.
- 49:58I guess the one to watch would be Emma Lawson.
- 50:01See what she is posting or wearing and posting.
- 50:06So speaking of women on the
- 50:13Carolyn says, but I think she's still staying noble.
- 50:19Interesting.
- 50:20Okay.
- 50:24Individual women confirmed by Wadapalooza.
- 50:27Olivia Kerstetter, Emily Rolfe, Sydney Wells, Danny Spiegel, Ariel Lowen.
- 50:39That's all we have listed so far.
- 50:41I have checked three times today.
- 50:43I was hoping they'd have the leaderboard up, but they do not have it up yet.
- 50:52I don't know what surprise they're waiting on.
- 50:56Well, did you say, did you say Aaliyah in there?
- 51:01Because didn't she make a post that she got back the invite?
- 51:05Again, I only went by what Wadapalooza announced, but Aliyah is RX this year anyway.
- 51:12She is not elite.
- 51:14I thought she got a backfill to elite.
- 51:17Oh, okay.
- 51:19She wasn't going to go if she only qualified as RX, which is what she qualified for.
- 51:24And so she wasn't going to go.
- 51:27Again, I've seen a ton of people post on their Instagram, but I could not be sure to catch everyone.
- 51:34So I only went with Waterpalooza confirmed on this list.
- 51:42So let's take a quick look at the workouts.
- 51:46Have you seen any of these?
- 51:53All right.
- 51:55So the first one is Cortadito.
- 52:02And the elite version of that is
- 52:12Four-time, 21-59 parallel bar dips, hang power cleans into 15-12-9 shoulder to overhead bar muscle-ups, 185-125.
- 52:23Initial thoughts?
- 52:30I like it.
- 52:32I think that second 15-12-9 is going to be gnarly.
- 52:37Holy cow.
- 52:40Bye-bye shoulders.
- 52:41You don't...
- 52:42Yeah.
- 52:44Man, I can see some questionable lockouts on those later shouldered overheads.
- 52:54That's a good workout.
- 52:55I like it a lot.
- 52:56All right.
- 52:58So that's what I believe that's event one.
- 53:03They don't even number them.
- 53:05It's kind of crazy.
- 53:06There's only a couple of each one.
- 53:09So Deja Vu is another individual workout.
- 53:13go to elite it is three minute five minute four time eight minute cap one minute rest between each i did see this workout assault calorie row uh that assault rower is awful 30 wall balls 35 chest to bar pull-ups 30 box jump overs 25 dumbbell snatches
- 53:42two scores, total reps across all parts, time on part C. Now that's where I'm confused because I only see an A and a B, a three and a five.
- 53:56Yeah.
- 53:59So I think if you go down here, there is a flow.
- 54:10All over again.
- 54:19I mean, I still don't see a Parsi.
- 54:22Yeah, I don't see a Parsi either.
- 54:26You're not getting through that in the first three minutes.
- 54:30No.
- 54:31And you're starting over for the second?
- 54:33Yeah.
- 54:38So I'm assuming is their time.
- 54:42They're assuming you're finishing the second part.
- 54:51In the eight-minute cap one, you're going to finish.
- 54:56Yeah, I saw the no sprint to the finish.
- 54:58They're messing with the, yeah.
- 55:02They are pushing my buttons.
- 55:03Yeah.
- 55:06Nothing I hate more.
- 55:10This one will be hard to follow on the floor, for sure.
- 55:13What's up, Jess?
- 55:19There's only one three-minute part, Andrew.
- 55:26Yeah, it's three minutes, then five minutes, then up to eight minutes.
- 55:30They're probably hoping people will finish in the up to eight-minute section.
- 55:39Okay.
- 55:41Yeah, I don't know.
- 55:44Good workout.
- 55:46I feel like this flow is going to be...
- 55:50It's a good workout for the gym.
- 55:51I don't know how well it's going to play out on the floor.
- 55:57All right.
- 55:57So we have two sprint-ish type workouts.
- 56:03Double or nothing.
- 56:06Elite.
- 56:09Your favorite for max load.
- 56:11Two attempts of the following complex.
- 56:14One snatch, one hang snatch.
- 56:1645 seconds on, 45 seconds off.
- 56:21Tie break is max overhead squats.
- 56:24Yeah, at least there's a tie break.
- 56:26Is there a weight for the overhead squat tie break?
- 56:33I'm assuming it's your bar, right?
- 56:42I don't know how you would do that.
- 56:52I don't know.
- 56:53I don't know.
- 56:53I feel like usually, yeah, that is really interesting.
- 57:00So Barry, which workout do you want Jamie to do tomorrow?
- 57:04Which one?
- 57:07Oh man, max weight in this one snatch, one hang snatch.
- 57:15I don't know.
- 57:15300.
- 57:15I need to see who's, who's going to be there.
- 57:24If Tudor's there, 325.
- 57:27Yeah.
- 57:28I think you got to go off of someone like Travis Mayer.
- 57:31You want me to do that three-minute, five-minute, eight-minute one?
- 57:38Yeah, I can maybe give that a go at some point.
- 57:45I'll let you know where I get to in the three and the five minutes.
- 57:51Oh, Guy's there.
- 57:53Oh, there you go.
- 57:55He'll hit over three.
- 57:57Yeah.
- 58:00Yep, yep.
- 58:01That'll be a good one for Guy.
- 58:04Is he competing in the Elite or the Latin America?
- 58:08That's a good question, too.
- 58:09I mean, if they get paid the same, he probably should go Latin.
- 58:14Danny Spiegel is already confirmed individually.
- 58:17She'll crush that.
- 58:19Yep.
- 58:23All right.
- 58:23So that is all for the elite that I think has been announced.
- 58:30Yep.
- 58:30Because this just beat it as the bike thing that everybody's doing except the elite.
- 58:39Okay.
- 58:39Then I think we get to teams, the three-person teams.
- 58:43And here's Worm Fran.
- 58:44Worm Fran.
- 58:5021 worm thrusters.
- 58:51Each athlete performs 21 reps.
- 58:54Eight pull-ups.
- 58:58Seven chest-to-bar.
- 59:00Six bar muscle-ups.
- 59:04So you've got to do each of those.
- 59:06That sort of makes sense.
- 59:08Then 15, each athlete performs 15 reps of six, five, four, and nine worm thrusters each, four, three, two, six, each athlete, three, two, one.
- 59:22Gross.
- 59:23While one athlete is on the rig, the other two are holding the worm.
- 59:29Oh, that's even worse.
- 59:33Yeah, way worse.
- 59:35Yeah, I mean...
- 59:37I feel like going like third at that.
- 59:40I don't know.
- 59:40I guess there's not even a good, good point to be in that workout.
- 59:44Cause you don't want to go, you don't want to jump into those 21 reps straight off of 21 thrusters.
- 59:50You also don't want to stand there and hold it and then go do it.
- 59:54That's gross.
- 59:55Yeah.
- 59:58Okay.
- 59:59So then I think.
- 1:00:00Okay.
- 1:00:08Move back over here.
- 1:00:11Elite.
- 1:00:13Four time, 20 wall walks, 40 strict handstand pushups, 60 handstand pushups.
- 1:00:19One holds handstand, one works, one rests.
- 1:00:24Into 240 synchro double unders.
- 1:00:27That's easy to judge.
- 1:00:29And then 60 deadlifts, 40 hand cleans, 20 front squats, all synchro.
- 1:00:36Oh my gosh.
- 1:00:37With three varying weights on each barbell.
- 1:00:43This is going to be a nightmare.
- 1:00:45Those 40 hang cleans are going to be a joke.
- 1:00:49Synchro.
- 1:00:51Are you actually going to stop people at the top and make sure all three are stopped at the top?
- 1:00:58Yeah.
- 1:00:58What about the deadlifts?
- 1:01:02It's going to be utter chaos.
- 1:01:04It is going to be chaos.
- 1:01:05People are going to try to go so fast.
- 1:01:08Yeah.
- 1:01:09Oh, boy.
- 1:01:12So, yeah.
- 1:01:14It's a lot of handstand push-ups, too.
- 1:01:17That is a lot.
- 1:01:21Strict?
- 1:01:22Yeah, that's a lot.
- 1:01:2440 strict, 60 regular.
- 1:01:29Wow.
- 1:01:30Our experienced judge says they've done it before.
- 1:01:33Synchro double under is stupid.
- 1:01:36Yeah, I remember watching at the games the synchro double under.
- 1:01:39That was interesting.
- 1:01:43But I feel like this, especially the 40 hand cleans, is going to be the biggest nightmare.
- 1:01:51I don't know that I've seen a team of three synchro.
- 1:01:54I've seen pairs synchro hand cleans.
- 1:02:02The sandbag send for time, buy-in of 360 feet, sandbag carry 120 each.
- 1:02:08Each athlete performs relay style 9-7-5, sandbag clean, sandbag squat 150-100, buy-out 360-foot sandbag carry 120 each.
- 1:02:34That'll be a fun one to watch.
- 1:02:35Yeah, I like that one.
- 1:02:42Wadapalooza always does the sandbag, and there's always judging mishaps in this one.
- 1:02:51It's because of the short floor and the always turning.
- 1:02:56Did they cross the line?
- 1:02:57Did they not cross the line?
- 1:03:01Yeah, it's...
- 1:03:05That's if they can get good judges on the floor for this, this will be good.
- 1:03:10Right.
- 1:03:11Yeah.
- 1:03:12I just don't like when judges are the discrepancy of a winner or not.
- 1:03:16And it seems to happen a lot at Wadapalooza, especially in an event like this.
- 1:03:22The only thing I will say, Kenneth, is because it's relay style, the first two people, if you dive on the bag, it's going to penalize you because your guy can't pick it up.
- 1:03:32Your second or third person cannot pick it up to then go.
- 1:03:35Yeah.
- 1:03:42All right.
- 1:03:42Let's see if there's another one up here.
- 1:03:45Worms can't swim.
- 1:03:52Four time, 30 worm clean and jerk, athlete one swim, athlete two and three synchro burpees, 50 over the worm.
- 1:04:0320 clean and jerks, athlete two swim, athletes one and three, 50 synchro burpees over the worm.
- 1:04:09Then 10 clean and jerks, athlete three swim, athlete one and two, 50 synchro burpees over the worm, five worm clean and jerks.
- 1:04:20Gross.
- 1:04:21Gross.
- 1:04:23But I love the swim events there.
- 1:04:26Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:28They're a quick out and back around the buoy that's easy to see.
- 1:04:32It actually makes it pretty riveting and entertaining to watch.
- 1:04:42Plus, you never know what you're going to get on the way out down the little runway.
- 1:04:50People jumping over each other, people slipping and sliding.
- 1:04:53You never know what you're going to get.
- 1:04:54I think that's it.
- 1:04:57I agree with Andrew.
- 1:04:58That's a good team event.
- 1:05:00Yeah.
- 1:05:06And then finally, there's one more here.
- 1:05:10It's the bike event or bike race.
- 1:05:17And this is the one that is not the elite as well.
- 1:05:23So Just Beat It and Bike Race are not for the elite.
- 1:05:29I thought everyone, scroll back down.
- 1:05:31I thought everybody was doing this.
- 1:05:32I thought this was off-site or whatever.
- 1:05:36Going, what's the same team's elite?
- 1:05:37In the open.
- 1:05:40What's team's elite?
- 1:05:47So the elite teams are running a 5K trail run.
- 1:05:52Combined time.
- 1:05:56So they're running it individually.
- 1:05:58Add up the three times.
- 1:06:05We'll see if it's actually 5k.
- 1:06:07And the NDRX are 50 or 40 cal echo bike and then a 5k trail run.
- 1:06:13Nice.
- 1:06:17Yeah.
- 1:06:18No Elite Indies on here.
- 1:06:21No.
- 1:06:21That's just RX Elite.
- 1:06:24I think they announce every division except for the Elite on this one.
- 1:06:28Okay.
- 1:06:29The Elite Indies.
- 1:06:33Yeah, I'll be curious to see some of the Masters on that.
- 1:06:36I like that event.
- 1:06:38Just beat it.
- 1:06:45This is beaded double-unders, dumbbell-facing burpees, beaded double-unders, dumbbell thrusters, and that's the one that does not have an elite listed either.
- 1:06:58It looks like just about every individual division, not elite on that one.
- 1:07:09So that is...
- 1:07:14That's a great point.
- 1:07:16Yeah.
- 1:07:16So they probably don't want the elite Indies doing the same workout the following day with the teams.
- 1:07:21That's a great point.
- 1:07:23Yep.
- 1:07:24Yep.
- 1:07:26Awesome.
- 1:07:27So I will stop sharing that and anything I have.
- 1:07:33So that's what a Palooza again, watch for our YouTube channel.
- 1:07:38We will be doing wrap up shows.
- 1:07:42And I talked to Holly today.
- 1:07:44I don't know if she's still on.
- 1:07:46We are going to put up updates on our IG from the elites, the RX and the masters and the teens.
- 1:08:00Wow.
- 1:08:01Because I'm home to help her.
- 1:08:03We're going to split the work and put up leaderboards, stuff like that throughout the day.
- 1:08:12So watch our Instagram too for all of that.
- 1:08:17Cause we'll be doing that this weekend.
- 1:08:21Awesome.
- 1:08:25The other thing I want to promote is I just interviewed Lynn Watt, my first ever guest from Scotland.
- 1:08:33That was a really fun interview.
- 1:08:36She was so nervous but did so awesome.
- 1:08:40She won the 60 to 64-year-old division at Legends.
- 1:08:44It was a great interview.
- 1:08:46We had to do it in the middle of the day yesterday because of the time difference to Scotland.
- 1:08:51So if you missed that, it's well worth a watch.
- 1:08:53She's...
- 1:08:54She's just a charming woman and it was really cool to kind of hear what she had to say.
- 1:09:01So make sure you check that out.
- 1:09:04Then last week in our weekend review, we talked about our best post-workout interviews.
- 1:09:14So we have collected some of those and we're going to play them for you tonight just to kind of remember how things went down.
- 1:09:24And take a look back at one last look back at 2023.
- 1:09:28And the first one is I said, one of my favorites was Kelly Baker after she tripped over the bag yet still made the games.
- 1:09:35And so we're going to start.
- 1:09:38Oh my goodness.
- 1:09:40Did you have to give us all a heart attack in that last event?
- 1:09:45Oh yeah, I'm still reliving it in my brain.
- 1:09:48That was a nightmare, but I'm just grateful I got to dance.
- 1:09:51You did enough in event six that you had a point buffer enough.
- 1:09:56to keep it, to get you in.
- 1:09:59Yeah, that was, my mom's going to have a heart attack.
- 1:10:04I had no idea, too.
- 1:10:05Like, I think a lot of times you have a little idea, like a coach will be like, I can't carry it.
- 1:10:09I just, I was waiting for them to say someone else's name.
- 1:10:14We're very proud of you this weekend.
- 1:10:15Got some more time to put some more training under the belt.
- 1:10:18Yeah.
- 1:10:18And we're going to see you at the games.
- 1:10:19Thank you.
- 1:10:20Good job.
- 1:10:20And that one was actually done by Jamie.
- 1:10:28Yeah, and it was one of my favorites.
- 1:10:29So that she's giving her mother a heart attack, one of my favorite lines from that.
- 1:10:39Another one from Jamie was when she chased Pat Vellner down the street.
- 1:10:46So that was, it was this one.
- 1:10:50The life of an elite athlete.
- 1:10:52How'd it feel?
- 1:10:54It wasn't very good, but it's nice to have one done.
- 1:10:58So I don't know.
- 1:10:59That was a bit of an unpredictable one just because we don't know what that equipment feels like.
- 1:11:02Right.
- 1:11:03And it's a bit, it's a bit different depending on your lane, on like what happens with the slides.
- 1:11:07So you have to deal with frustrations in the middle of the workout, which is not as common in a semifinal setting.
- 1:11:14That's like something we see more at the games.
- 1:11:17But, you know.
- 1:11:18So you haven't used that piece of equipment, that slide piece?
- 1:11:21No, no, I don't think anybody really had.
- 1:11:23And there was none in the back.
- 1:11:24So the first time you got your hands on it was after the bike.
- 1:11:27Well, I appreciate your time.
- 1:11:28I'm going to let you get recovered.
- 1:11:29I am excited to see you on that too.
- 1:11:31You're my pick.
- 1:11:35And Jamie gives the plug that she picked him for the next event.
- 1:11:42So the next one is one I did.
- 1:11:44I mentioned it last week.
- 1:11:46It was Cole Sager.
- 1:11:47It was not one that I expected to be one of my favorites.
- 1:11:51But again, my mother still believes that he is a long lost relative of mine.
- 1:11:55So I guess when I interview family, things go well.
- 1:11:59So here's the Cole Sager one.
- 1:12:02So, Sundays are made for cold.
- 1:12:04Sundays are fun days, yeah.
- 1:12:06Yeah, so you went out hard there, had a great workout.
- 1:12:09Thank you.
- 1:12:09And it came down to a couple tons in a second.
- 1:12:11Yeah.
- 1:12:11When you just got that low.
- 1:12:13Do you love these days?
- 1:12:15I love these days.
- 1:12:16I mean, I love pressurized situations.
- 1:12:19It's fun to compete in.
- 1:12:20It's fun to be a part of.
- 1:12:21It challenges you and teaches you things that...
- 1:12:24i don't know that any other like arena would teach you you know what i mean it's like you need to find out things about yourself about life it's a fun place to be so well the last event looks good for you i just i loved his response yeah yeah he's it was good
- 1:12:47The next one we have up is my friend Ariel, who is always super laid back at these things.
- 1:12:53And it's a short one, but I wanted to share this one too as one of my friends.
- 1:12:57Here with Ariel Nolan, right after Linda.
- 1:13:00Yeah.
- 1:13:00You're having a really good weekend doing everything you need to do.
- 1:13:03Exactly.
- 1:13:03That was kind of the plan coming into it.
- 1:13:05Top 10.
- 1:13:06If better than that happens, awesome.
- 1:13:08But just kind of like run my own race and try not to look around too much.
- 1:13:12With a field that wide, is it hard to not get caught up in everything going on around you?
- 1:13:16I actually like it better because there's so much chaos going on.
- 1:13:19I know that not one person is watching this specifically.
- 1:13:23Like, it kind of takes away some pressure because I know there's so many people.
- 1:13:26Like, who do you watch?
- 1:13:27Well, good luck the rest of the weekend.
- 1:13:29Thanks.
- 1:13:29Appreciate it, Scott.
- 1:13:34Again, just hoping to get top 10.
- 1:13:37Yeah.
- 1:13:37This is the semifinals.
- 1:13:41So cool that she actually hit the podium.
- 1:13:44As I was going back through these from semis, Jamie actually hit a murderer's row where she interviewed Justin Medeiros, Chandler Smith, and Pat Vellner after the weekend was over.
- 1:13:58So I picked one from there that was just different than we'd had from other ones.
- 1:14:02And that's Chandler Smith, who was awesome.
- 1:14:07I'm here with Chandler Smith.
- 1:14:09You just punched your ticket back to Madison.
- 1:14:13You've got your wife going.
- 1:14:14She qualified.
- 1:14:15I know a lot of us last year really, I mean, we felt that emotion last year out there at Granite Games with you.
- 1:14:21What does this mean to you, getting back?
- 1:14:23It means, it's like it's been the only thing I've been focused on for the last year.
- 1:14:28You know, as athletes, our career shelf life is really short.
- 1:14:31And so you only get so many chances to prove yourself, to step into the ring with the best guys in the world.
- 1:14:37And I was very excited.
- 1:14:39upset or I just felt frustrated last year that I didn't get the chance to use one of my opportunities to the fullest of my abilities.
- 1:14:43And I spent the rest of last year with all the competitions really dialing in on that.
- 1:14:47But more importantly now, I'm able to celebrate because I have a lot of friends who have done a lot of really cool stuff this year.
- 1:14:52My wife's qualified, as you said, which is awesome.
- 1:14:53Noah's made it for the 10th time.
- 1:14:55Cole Sager's one you've got to look up to most of the space.
- 1:14:58He made it up for the 10th time.
- 1:14:59I'm like, you want to be able to celebrate with these people?
- 1:15:02And even last year, there was a lot of folks I was very happy for, but I feel like I couldn't really give them the emotional energy I wanted to because I was so down about my stuff.
- 1:15:10So I'm just grateful that I kind of have the chance to be able to be available to other people again.
- 1:15:15The people are excited for you.
- 1:15:17We're excited to watch you in Madison.
- 1:15:18I'm happy to put it on the show, so I'm excited to be on there.
- 1:15:20Congratulations.
- 1:15:21Thank you so much.
- 1:15:25so such a good interview like what you got out of him in that moment uh was so much for what a minute and seven seconds or something ridiculous yeah you get you get tight time man they don't they don't let you just hang out there with these guys
- 1:15:46So my next one is one of my favorites that I did and is always one of my favorites, and it's Scott Tetlow because he just starts talking.
- 1:15:55You never know where it's going to go, but it's so much fun.
- 1:15:59And he was doing so well over this weekend, so close to a game spot, but missed out.
- 1:16:05All right, we're Scott Tetlow.
- 1:16:08Tied.
- 1:16:09No, apparently I won according to tiebreaker to tiebreaker.
- 1:16:14There's a tiebreaker.
- 1:16:14There's a tiebreaker, apparently.
- 1:16:16That happened in the women's team.
- 1:16:17One round score, I guess.
- 1:16:19So you and Colton going head-to-head fit worse, too.
- 1:16:22I know, right?
- 1:16:22It just so happens to have burpees and ring muscle-ups in it, too.
- 1:16:26Yeah.
- 1:16:27So was that the plan all along, which you unbroken on the muscle-ups?
- 1:16:31Yes.
- 1:16:31Crush the pistols.
- 1:16:33Try to stay smooth on the pistols, get no no reps.
- 1:16:36I got two no reps, but just kind of work through those and just get to the box where I saw a lot of people transition on the walk.
- 1:16:43I was like, hey, let's jog.
- 1:16:44Let's just try to get to the box and start making moves on the burpees.
- 1:16:49All right, great for the end of your day.
- 1:16:51You ready and set up for the weekend?
- 1:16:53Yeah, I'm good.
- 1:16:54Usually past two events on day two, I'm going to like chasing a spot where hopefully that was enough to keep me inside the top 10 for day two.
- 1:17:02Awesome job, man.
- 1:17:04Thank you.
- 1:17:06So good.
- 1:17:07So good that these memories are so cool that it actually was a Fit Wars rematch for the win in that event.
- 1:17:15And it was the same movements that they used in Fit Wars.
- 1:17:18And Tetlo got him this time.
- 1:17:21He is so animated.
- 1:17:23I love it.
- 1:17:24Yeah.
- 1:17:26So the next one up is actually one you picked last week as one of your favorites.
- 1:17:30And it's not because she was at the top of the heap, but her husband was.
- 1:17:35And it was Carrie Stevenson.
- 1:17:39She was also Carrie Tobias, right?
- 1:17:42No.
- 1:17:44Why am I not thinking it right?
- 1:17:46Anyway, yeah, she is Mitchell Stevenson's wife, but she in her own right, she was actually a better CrossFit longer than Mitchell was.
- 1:17:56And she is now prioritizing different things in her life, but she's still qualified for semis.
- 1:18:01You captured that moment.
- 1:18:03It was so good.
- 1:18:04I'm here with Carrie Beamer, also Stevenson.
- 1:18:08So you are Mitchell's wife.
- 1:18:09Yep.
- 1:18:10Yeah.
- 1:18:12Was your goal to make it to semifinals?
- 1:18:15You're just kind of here.
- 1:18:16Yeah.
- 1:18:17Is it helpful?
- 1:18:18I'm stoked to be here, but yeah.
- 1:18:19Is it helpful to be able to give him feedback?
- 1:18:22Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 1:18:23You guys share that?
- 1:18:24Yeah, and I have two other really close friends who are competing in the higher leagues than me.
- 1:18:29So a former teammate of mine, Chris Stapp, and then...
- 1:18:32training partner and friend gabrielle smith and mitchell so it's kind of awesome to like go first usually and then be like oh the rope's a little oily or you know the handstand feels like this so yeah how proud of your of you are mitchell this oh my gosh don't make me cry so proud
- 1:18:53Well, we're excited to watch him, and it's been nice seeing you on the floor.
- 1:18:56Thanks.
- 1:18:57One more event, and then you get to relax and cheer your heart out for him.
- 1:19:07You got that emotion.
- 1:19:08It was so good.
- 1:19:11The fact that like three members of the team that went to the games were all competing individually there at the semis was really cool.
- 1:19:21And, and you got to capture that, which was awesome.
- 1:19:25So we got two left, two left to stick with us about three more minutes.
- 1:19:29And that is the next one is I picked this one out for you because I thought you interviewed him so well.
- 1:19:36And it was Tudor Magda who you caught him right after the lift, but he had had a rough weekend.
- 1:19:43And I thought what you did here was awesome.
- 1:19:45And I wanted to show it off.
- 1:19:47So here's Tudor Magda.
- 1:19:49I'm here with Tudor Magda, just finished test four and five.
- 1:19:55Started with Linda today, went pretty well for ya.
- 1:19:57Yeah, I think I got stuck in my heat and I made that push at the end, so.
- 1:20:03You were hungry today, I'm assuming, yeah?
- 1:20:05Yeah, definitely, yeah.
- 1:20:09325.
- 1:20:09Yeah.
- 1:20:09Does the limit exist?
- 1:20:11I hope not, I hope we can keep climbing, but I'd love it if the other stuff could climb with it.
- 1:20:17We'll work on that.
- 1:20:19It is amazing to watch you move a barbell, hit those snatch numbers.
- 1:20:24You move it so well.
- 1:20:26We're really excited to keep you watching.
- 1:20:29Keep watching you climb the leaderboard.
- 1:20:30Thank you.
- 1:20:33Great interview.
- 1:20:35Thanks.
- 1:20:37Because it's hard.
- 1:20:39He's not an easy person to interview.
- 1:20:40He doesn't always agree to it.
- 1:20:43Yes.
- 1:20:43I was surprised he said yes.
- 1:20:45But luckily I just snatched his heart out.
- 1:20:47So he was, I think a little more willing.
- 1:20:53So my last one, I left off my list last week, but it's probably my favorite from the whole season.
- 1:21:00And in this vein with these people, he's the people's champ.
- 1:21:08Everybody doubts him.
- 1:21:10And yet he keeps coming back and making the games year after year after year.
- 1:21:16And so this is right after Colton had wrapped up his third consecutive CrossFit Games invite.
- 1:21:25And I got him right on the floor, which was amazing.
- 1:21:29Colton Mertens just punched his third straight ticket to the CrossFit Games.
- 1:21:35Every year you have your doubters.
- 1:21:37Every year you prove them wrong.
- 1:21:41What are people going to learn?
- 1:21:43If they ain't learned by now, then they just might not learn, you know.
- 1:21:46Honestly, though, I had a lot of doubts myself coming into this year.
- 1:21:49You know, I started out the year in the hospital being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, and I thought my season and maybe my career was done.
- 1:21:57I just made the choice to keep fighting and not worry about the results and what things would be inside the system.
- 1:22:04Try and be as prepared as I could on the day that it mattered and end up working out.
- 1:22:09So just like every year, you've closed some gaps.
- 1:22:11What are you going to do in the next two months?
- 1:22:14Keep on doing it.
- 1:22:16it's funny every year i qualify since the first year i look at the events and i say man if we had these events last year i wouldn't have qualified i wouldn't have been fit enough for these events and this year same thing i made huge strides in my running and machine work and you know it's paid off big time and it got me through congratulations you made it back three years in a row so good so good
- 1:22:43yeah that was that's one of my favorites um yeah we he did his first ever podcast with us at a in a barn that had such a bad signal then we struggled through i think it was an hour it maybe it was 40 minutes but the struggle was real that day and uh ever since that day him and ali had become such good friends um we got to hang out after granite games in 22 22
- 1:23:12Yeah.
- 1:23:13And, uh, it was one of the coolest things in my life.
- 1:23:16I owe Colton a ton and that interview was awesome.
- 1:23:21So just a little look back at, we did over a hundred post workout interviews during two semifinals.
- 1:23:30That was just a taste of some of our favorites.
- 1:23:35Um, there's so many more favorites.
- 1:23:37It was really hard to pick.
- 1:23:40Um,
- 1:23:42It just, it was really cool.
- 1:23:43Yeah.
- 1:23:47And actually, Kenneth mentioned Carolyn.
- 1:23:49Carolyn gave me so much good material that I still have sitting to do a documentary with that I just have, because of my day job and what's happened, I haven't had time to get it cut out to do anything with.
- 1:24:02And she's, Carolyn's one of the best interviews ever.
- 1:24:06Like she will tell you everything that happened in that event and
- 1:24:10analytically, even though it just happened to her, which is really cool.
- 1:24:19Any final thoughts from you, Jamie?
- 1:24:23It was your first year doing this.
- 1:24:25I know it was overwhelming, nerve wracking.
- 1:24:31But I just kind of jumped in the deep end and I truly appreciate the opportunity.
- 1:24:36Hopefully I can just get better.
- 1:24:41When you look back at them, do you remember them?
- 1:24:44Or do you black out for moments?
- 1:24:50No, I remember.
- 1:24:52And I finish and I'm like, oh, why'd you say that?
- 1:24:55Or why didn't you say that?
- 1:24:58But you're like, you're so crammed for time that it's tough to get out what you want to say.
- 1:25:06Or to, like, try to keep them in, like, because sometimes they, like, Marquand wants to talk.
- 1:25:14Some of them want to talk.
- 1:25:15And you can't even, like, the athlete control people are, like, yanking them away.
- 1:25:20They're like, you got to stop.
- 1:25:21And I'm like, they just want to talk.
- 1:25:25Yeah, and it's crazy because we have always taken the philosophy, two questions, one minute.
- 1:25:34That's what we're shooting for.
- 1:25:41There are other people in this business that go five minutes in these.
- 1:25:47I don't know how.
- 1:25:50I don't know how that even happens.
- 1:25:53To me, you lose the authenticity of the moment when you go beyond the minute.
- 1:25:59Yeah.
- 1:25:59Yeah.
- 1:26:02And so that's always been our, since I started this in 2021, that has always been my goal.
- 1:26:12Two questions, one minute.
- 1:26:15If they answer quick, you might get a third one in as a follow-up and still be under the minute.
- 1:26:20And then you get people like Rebecca Fusile who is spitting out words that you have to catch and you just have to keep going.
- 1:26:29Yeah.
- 1:26:29Yeah.
- 1:26:31Yeah, if you know, so I feel like now going through it, I feel like just going and getting someone's reaction after event four,
- 1:26:43you just ask a couple of questions and just see, see how they're feeling, you know, get a, a response to that event.
- 1:26:50If you know you have the opportunity to catch these athletes throughout a weekend, you're fine with that.
- 1:26:56It's, it's when you only are going to get one opportunity with Rebecca and you actually like have things you want to hear her say, and you want her to be able to speak about, or like the really hard ones are like,
- 1:27:11not, I mean, Chandler's wasn't hard, but like you actually want to like recap the weekend or you want to, you know, you don't want to just get event fours recap, 30 second reaction.
- 1:27:21You want more content.
- 1:27:24So, um, yeah, the drive-by interviews are fun.
- 1:27:27Those like post-workout off the floor, quick reactions are incredibly cool.
- 1:27:33And I think no, if you are confident, you're going to see that athlete again in two days and be able to get
- 1:27:39a bigger response, you're cool with the 30 response now.
- 1:27:44Yeah.
- 1:27:45Yep.
- 1:27:46Yeah.
- 1:27:47And the beauty of like your Pat Vellner one though, is it became conversational.
- 1:27:53Yeah.
- 1:27:53Like it was, it was not an interview.
- 1:27:55It was, it was you letting him gripe about what just happened.
- 1:28:02And it, we just happened to have a camera rolling.
- 1:28:06Yeah.
- 1:28:06I will.
- 1:28:07I'm,
- 1:28:08I'm always up for running around and chasing down athletes.
- 1:28:11You know me, I'll just zip on down the floor and get to where I need to get to.
- 1:28:18I'm going to finish it up with this.
- 1:28:19Jamie runs everywhere to get an interview, but nothing is more frustrating than when she runs from a workout venue to try to get to athlete village before they can get in and then forget to turn on the mic.
- 1:28:42Yeah, that was a little, that was a little frustrating.
- 1:28:44It's not that I forgot.
- 1:28:46That was the new, when you first gave me the road mics and I couldn't see outside.
- 1:28:52So that was just like first time operator error with that equipment.
- 1:28:56And I spent, I got there early enough that I spent like two minutes on off, like, but I like literally couldn't see in the sunlight.
- 1:29:05It was not good.
- 1:29:06That was not good.
- 1:29:07I redid that one, but yeah, not cool.
- 1:29:09Cause I felt like that was a good original interview.
- 1:29:13Yeah.
- 1:29:14There's always the mess ups that hit the cutting room floor.
- 1:29:18But as you can see, the 10 we showed today were freaking awesome.
- 1:29:23And we want to thank you all for letting us take you on this journey with us and just having a good time with it.
- 1:29:32Because in 2024, it's all for the glory.
- 1:29:39That's it.
- 1:29:39That's our new theme.
- 1:29:43With that, we love you all, man.
- 1:29:46This has been a great night catching up and getting some news out.
- 1:29:51We will see you all next week on Thursday Night CrossFit Talk.
