- 0:01Bias cases, Do thou seek to know the eternal?
- 0:05For concentration in thought is the eternal.
- 0:09Thus spoke Varuna to Brugu in the Tituria Upanishad Srioro
- 0:14Binda's translation, Swami Vivekananda's lectures on Raja
- 0:19Yoga, expounding the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with an extensive
- 0:24commentary or a textbook on developing the science of
- 0:28concentration and the benefits of such development.
- 0:32For those who eventually recognize the chaotic and
- 0:35undisciplined state of the mental space, the practice of
- 0:39Raja Yoga can be a tremendous benefit.
- 0:43It is interesting that we are always seeking new exotic powers
- 0:47while we overlook the enormous capabilities and potential of
- 0:52the powers we already have, which simply need to be focused,
- 0:57trained, and developed. Concentration is perhaps the
- 1:01foremost of these powers, and the benefits of concentration
- 1:05can be seen wherever we turn. If you want to succeed in the
- 1:11world, if you want to excel in science, mathematics, sports,
- 1:16art, or music, concentration is essential.
- 1:21What most people do not seem to appreciate is that we not only
- 1:25need to learn how to utilize the power of concentration, but that
- 1:29it can also be trained, enhanced, focused, and developed
- 1:35through various methods, practices, and repetition.
- 1:39We tend to live a life of distraction, particularly with
- 1:43all of the forces in the modern world seeking to pull our
- 1:46attention in One Direction or another.
- 1:49Ours fixation with modern technology certainly has proven
- 1:53to be a major force of distraction.
- 1:56Even when we try to sit for meditation, we find that all
- 2:00kinds of chaotic thoughts, feelings, emotions, sensations
- 2:05are competing for attention in our minds, and for the most
- 2:09part, we wind up jumping from 1:00 to another without any
- 2:14clear method of control or focus, the mother writes.
- 2:19Quote Whatever you may want to do in life, one thing is
- 2:24absolutely indispensable and the at the basis of everything, the
- 2:29capacity of concentrating the attention.
- 2:32If you are able to gather together the rays of attention
- 2:35and consciousness on one point and can maintain this
- 2:39concentration with a persistent will, nothing can resist it,
- 2:44whatever it may be, from the most material physical
- 2:48development to the highest spiritual one.
- 2:51But this discipline must be followed in a constant and, it
- 2:55may be said, imperturbable way, Not that you should always be
- 3:00concentrated on the same thing. That's not what I mean.
- 3:04I mean learning to concentrate, and materially for studies,
- 3:10sports, all physical or mental development, it is absolutely
- 3:15indispensable. And the value of an individual
- 3:18is proportionate to the value of his attention.
- 3:22And from the spiritual point of view it is still more important.
- 3:26There is no spiritual obstacle which can resist a penetrating
- 3:30power of concentration. For instance, the discovery of
- 3:34the psychic being union with the inner Divine, opening to the
- 3:40higher spheres, all can be obtained by an intense and
- 3:44obstinate power of concentration.
- 3:47But one must learn how to do it. There is nothing in the human or
- 3:52even in the superhuman field to which the power of concentration
- 3:55is not the key. You can be the best athlete, you
- 4:00can be the best student. You can be an artistic, literary
- 4:05or scientific genius. You can be the greatest St. with
- 4:10that faculty. And everyone has in himself a
- 4:14tiny little beginning of it. It is given to everybody, but
- 4:18people do not cultivate it. End Quote.
