- 0:03Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time,
- 0:29Speaker 1: that's one pm for our friends in Howard, Pennsylvania on Thursday,
- 0:33Speaker 1: August twenty first, and we're live from Mediater HQ and Boseman.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm your host, Spencer, joined today by Seth and Brody.
- 0:40Speaker 1: On today's show, we'll interview Jared Westbrook from the American
- 0:44Speaker 1: Chestnut Foundation. Then we'll be reviewing some gear that's currently
- 0:48Speaker 1: on sale, followed by the Price is Right, and finally
- 0:51Speaker 1: we'll be joined by Pat Dirkin in Minnesota for one
- 0:53Speaker 1: minute fishing. But first, Seth and Brody give me an
- 0:57Speaker 1: Alaska recap. Very jealous.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It was good.
- 1:01Speaker 3: It always is, I would say, in the seven years
- 1:06Speaker 3: I've been going there with my family. This was the
- 1:09Speaker 3: worst year weather wise and rough seas wise. It two
- 1:14Speaker 3: or at least two maybe three days. We couldn't even
- 1:16Speaker 3: get out to like the good halibut spots yep. So
- 1:20Speaker 3: you know that's part of it. You know you're gonna
- 1:23Speaker 3: have weather. But we still scratched out plenty of fish
- 1:27Speaker 3: and everybody had fun.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Not the worst fishing in your seven years of going
- 1:31Speaker 1: there though, No, when we could.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Get out it was good.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah, some things were not so good this year, like salmon.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah yeah. Normally we put up a lot of silvers,
- 1:43Speaker 3: but the silver run either hadn't started or it was
- 1:46Speaker 3: just a really weak run this year.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Tell me about this picture we're.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Looking at that is a silver gray rock fish, and
- 1:54Speaker 3: one normally when we get them there like yeah big,
- 1:58Speaker 3: maybe sixteen inches is a decent one. And I we
- 2:03Speaker 3: dropped down on a rocky spire for ling cod, and
- 2:07Speaker 3: that thing came up and we thought, like when it
- 2:10Speaker 3: was coming up from one hundred feet down, we thought
- 2:12Speaker 3: it was a big link cod. And it turns out
- 2:14Speaker 3: it was a giant silver gray. I didn't weigh it.
- 2:17Speaker 3: The world record is sixteen pounds, and that thing is
- 2:22Speaker 3: I don't know. It felt like picking up a jake
- 2:24Speaker 3: turkey like so, I don't know thirteen Oh yeah, it
- 2:29Speaker 3: was scaling. The boat was like this. It was giant.
- 2:34Speaker 2: It was a big fit. It was the biggest one
- 2:35Speaker 2: I've ever seen.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Would le keep We kept it? Oh yeah, it's in
- 2:39Speaker 3: the freezer.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Okay, So, like, are the gut still in it?
- 2:44Speaker 2: No?
- 2:44Speaker 3: No, no, it's it's delayed.
- 2:45Speaker 1: But now I'm so curious about to wait, I know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: but you know nothing.
- 2:53Speaker 3: So yeah, that was like probably my fish and highlight
- 2:56Speaker 3: other than putting the kids on a bunch of fish.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And uh, when you were reeling that in, what do
- 3:00Speaker 1: you think it was?
- 3:01Speaker 2: Dude?
- 3:01Speaker 3: It was like I thought it was a big link
- 3:03Speaker 3: cod because normally it was rockfish. They'll give a few
- 3:06Speaker 3: headshakes and then they come up pretty easily, and that
- 3:09Speaker 3: thing was just dig in and it pulled line a
- 3:12Speaker 3: couple of times, pulled drag a couple of times, and
- 3:15Speaker 3: you can see color coming up from a long ways
- 3:18Speaker 3: down and I was like, yep, it's a big link cod.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And Andy See's buddy was in the boat from me,
- 3:23Speaker 3: He's like, I knew it hit as soon as it like,
- 3:26Speaker 3: I digged that hit bottom, jigged at once and it
- 3:28Speaker 3: was on. But then I was like, holy shit, that's
- 3:31Speaker 3: a giant silver gray. So that was cool.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Is the world record also Alaska's state record? Did it
- 3:37Speaker 1: come from?
- 3:38Speaker 3: I didn't look at that. It came from Alaska, though,
- 3:40Speaker 3: so I'm assuming it's also the state record.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Some other highlights are my wife, I was not in
- 3:51Speaker 3: the boat thankfully when this happened. But my wife got
- 3:55Speaker 3: a seventy eighty pounder halibit up to up to the
- 4:00Speaker 3: surface and like as she's fighting it. She was in
- 4:05Speaker 3: Andy's boat and and Steve kind of rushed into the
- 4:08Speaker 3: scene and took over and jumped.
- 4:12Speaker 2: In the boat. That's when everything went to ship ill.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I heard as it went to total chaos when Steve
- 4:18Speaker 3: shut up anyway, got wrapped around the anchor line and
- 4:24Speaker 3: they're trying to they're hand lining it in like it
- 4:27Speaker 3: was all looking like it might happen. But Steve said
- 4:30Speaker 3: that the halbit dodged the harpoon and and the fish
- 4:36Speaker 3: got off.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I was I was in a different boat about I
- 4:41Speaker 2: don't know, one hundred yards away when this was all
- 4:43Speaker 2: going out watching it. I could tell that that his
- 4:46Speaker 2: wife Carrie was onto something big. So I got my
- 4:50Speaker 2: binoculars out. I was watching it all happen through my binoculars.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Finders yep, that's right, and Steve. I see Steve coming.
- 4:59Speaker 2: He he's like, what's going on? You catch anything? I said,
- 5:02Speaker 2: they're they're into something big over there. So he of
- 5:04Speaker 2: course goes over there as quick as he can. And uh,
- 5:09Speaker 2: I'm watching my binoculars, and I see him get the harpoon,
- 5:13Speaker 2: and I'm like, and I could tell like carry has
- 5:15Speaker 2: something big on.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Steve gets on the boat.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Steve gets on their boat, grabs the harpoon, and I
- 5:20Speaker 2: see him like throw the harpoon and then like he
- 5:25Speaker 2: picks the harpoon up, throws it at the bottom of
- 5:26Speaker 2: the boat and then crosses his arm.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I'm like, that ain't good, no, no, but enough picking
- 5:35Speaker 3: on Steve. It was, it was. It was a good trip.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And that kind of thing happens with big halibit. But
- 5:40Speaker 3: I'll tell you what, like, if you want to catch
- 5:42Speaker 3: a big halbit, you end up in a fish shack
- 5:45Speaker 3: and you want to get a big one, this is
- 5:47Speaker 3: the guy to go with. Because he was putting all
- 5:49Speaker 3: kinds of people on big hell.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, we got some good ones this year.
- 5:51Speaker 1: What have that been the big one of the trip?
- 5:54Speaker 1: That fish?
- 5:54Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:55Speaker 1: They were all like when they get away, they are
- 5:58Speaker 1: the biggest.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Steve's boy Jimmy was in my boat and he got
- 6:03Speaker 2: an eighty pounder, and then his daughter was in the
- 6:06Speaker 2: boat the day before she got a sixty. I had
- 6:10Speaker 2: what I believed to be between a seventy to eighty
- 6:12Speaker 2: to the boat, and there was a little mishap with
- 6:15Speaker 2: the harpoon again with my wife run in the harpoon Kelsey,
- 6:21Speaker 2: and then my dad had one on that we never
- 6:24Speaker 2: saw it, but it drug us around for quite a
- 6:27Speaker 2: while and then it got off.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Give me a cabin update.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Cabin's looking good.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We got on this trip. We we wired the place
- 6:37Speaker 2: and got a roof on the back porch.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Okay, no, it looks great man.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Better than ever, better than.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Ever, like even better than prior to the Christmas tree
- 6:46Speaker 1: coming to.
- 6:48Speaker 3: It looks brand new from the outside.
- 6:50Speaker 2: It's beautiful. Thanks.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah, there's still a lot to do.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But how many hours do you think you spent on
- 6:55Speaker 1: this trip? You were there for what a week?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Two weeks?
- 6:58Speaker 1: Two weeks? How many hours in that two weeks when
- 7:00Speaker 1: you hammer it away on the cabin?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. A few good days, like all
- 7:09Speaker 2: day for the most part, working on it to eight
- 7:13Speaker 2: hour shifts more probably more once it's all some I
- 7:18Speaker 2: mean some days when we'd fish the morning and I
- 7:20Speaker 2: just work on the It's like I wasn't just working
- 7:23Speaker 2: on one project the whole time. There's like kind of
- 7:25Speaker 2: a bunch of things going on and then just like
- 7:28Speaker 2: little stuff cleaning up, you know, stuff around the cabin
- 7:32Speaker 2: or fixing little things, and you know it's just it's
- 7:35Speaker 2: just I could honestly go up there and work on
- 7:37Speaker 2: it for two weeks straight and not fish at all.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, but Phil, do we got uh do?
- 7:44Speaker 3: We got Steve's dispatch an octopus video watch till the end.
- 8:05Speaker 2: There.
- 8:05Speaker 1: We just watched Steve Biden to the would you say
- 8:09Speaker 1: that's the head?
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:10Speaker 3: The brain? Okay, yeah, chomping down on the brain. I
- 8:13Speaker 3: think I learned that from Kimmy Werner. I think something
- 8:17Speaker 3: is that how every octopus dies up there that you
- 8:19Speaker 3: guys keep.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I don't know about up there, but in Hawaii for sure. Yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 2: usually they turn they like immediately go a different color.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I was waiting for that thing to just go totally limp.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe he didn't get it.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Great those things come up in the shrimp pots though.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah, don't get in there and eat all your shrimp
- 8:39Speaker 2: out of your pot.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Okay, done with Alaska, then for the year, you won't
- 8:43Speaker 1: return till the spring.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Not till spring. Yeah. Unfortunately, unless I can squeeze in
- 8:47Speaker 2: a trip, I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 8:49Speaker 1: What's gonna be the big project next year.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Outdoor shower. They got a couple of pilings we got
- 8:56Speaker 2: to replace yet.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Okay, is that outdoor shower going to be a game changer?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, just gets all the moisture and humidity from a
- 9:03Speaker 2: shower out of the cabin. The main thing up there
- 9:08Speaker 2: is moisture management. Yeah, I've come to find over the years,
- 9:11Speaker 2: because if you leave the place, when you button it
- 9:14Speaker 2: up for the year with moisture in there, you come
- 9:18Speaker 2: back with quite a bit of mold.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I was surprised to hear you saying that, like snow
- 9:23Speaker 1: just doesn't stick.
- 9:25Speaker 2: I mean from what I hear. I've never been up
- 9:27Speaker 2: there during the winter, but from what I hear, they'll
- 9:29Speaker 2: get like big dumps of snow and then it just
- 9:32Speaker 2: like melts.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Next, like that maritime climate, you know, like the Pacific Northwest.
- 9:38Speaker 2: It's just yeah, snow's one day. Rains the next type
- 9:42Speaker 2: of thing.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And you said thirteen feet of precipitation annually.
- 9:45Speaker 3: We got thirteen feet while there.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It rained a lot.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Ye still brought home some good fish and a potential
- 9:52Speaker 1: world record.
- 9:54Speaker 3: No, well I don't think it was a world record.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Well, you didn't weigh it, so no, never know. All right,
- 10:01Speaker 1: let's get on with the show. Joining us on the
- 10:03Speaker 1: line first is Jared Westbrook, the director of Science from
- 10:07Speaker 1: the American Chestnut Foundation. He's here to talk about restoring
- 10:11Speaker 1: this once plentiful tree. Jared, Welcome to the show.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Hello everyone.
- 10:16Speaker 1: First thing, Jared, take us back in time and tell
- 10:18Speaker 1: us about when things were good for the American chestnut.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Well, chestnuts and their relatives have been around in North
- 10:27Speaker 5: America for forty million years and where you all are
- 10:30Speaker 5: in Montana, they used to live out there in Idaho
- 10:33Speaker 5: and Colorado. Chestnut fossils have been found in Tennessee, some
- 10:39Speaker 5: of the oldest ones. And they used to like as
- 10:44Speaker 5: the ice age came down, like in thirteen thousand years ago,
- 10:48Speaker 5: they went all the way down into Florida, and then
- 10:51Speaker 5: slowly over the last two thousand years they moved up
- 10:54Speaker 5: into like New England.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And people use them.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Native Americans like would burn the forest create openings. The
- 11:03Speaker 5: chestnuts would be plentiful source of food. And then when
- 11:07Speaker 5: European sellers came over here, we you know, collected nuts
- 11:13Speaker 5: by the trainload and ship them up to the cities.
- 11:16Speaker 5: New York City Baltimore. People sold them on the street corners.
- 11:19Speaker 5: They made more money off of chestnuts and they did
- 11:21Speaker 5: off of farming, So it was a source of livelihood
- 11:25Speaker 5: for people. And before and after, I mean during that time,
- 11:32Speaker 5: people brought over Chinese chestnuts and we can talk about
- 11:35Speaker 5: the blight next.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah, today the USDA refers to the American chestnut as
- 11:39Speaker 1: a quote near mythical species. So what happened?
- 11:44Speaker 5: So the chestnuts used to be in you know, North
- 11:48Speaker 5: Carolina where I live, in the Smoky Mountains, like you could,
- 11:53Speaker 5: there's like reports of people being able to walk their
- 11:57Speaker 5: cows into the inside of the trees and walk around
- 12:01Speaker 5: like they're that big. So they're huge, you know, old
- 12:05Speaker 5: growth stands of these in the Smoky Mountains and then
- 12:09Speaker 5: up into the throughout the Appalachians. And in nineteen oh four,
- 12:14Speaker 5: actually earlier people were brought over like Japanese chestnuts and
- 12:17Speaker 5: Chinese chestnuts because they were bred for having large nuts
- 12:22Speaker 5: to eat, and they brought them over and they did
- 12:25Speaker 5: not know that a fungus was on those trees. And
- 12:29Speaker 5: this fungus attacks the bark of the tree and then
- 12:33Speaker 5: they die from the top of the tree dies, but
- 12:37Speaker 5: they still live.
- 12:38Speaker 2: From their roots.
- 12:39Speaker 5: But right now, there was like four billion trees on
- 12:42Speaker 5: the East coast. Now there's probably a few hundred million
- 12:45Speaker 5: that are left, but they're sitting in the understory of
- 12:49Speaker 5: the forest. Like if you're walking around the woods in
- 12:51Speaker 5: the Appalachian Mountains, you might see them. They have the blight,
- 12:55Speaker 5: but they don't really flower and reproduce, so they're no
- 13:00Speaker 5: longer evolving on their own living as a tree as
- 13:04Speaker 5: they once were.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Now i've seen your organization refer to them as functionally extinct.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Why that label, because they're not actually extinct, like in
- 13:15Speaker 5: the sense that there's no chestnuts out in the landscape.
- 13:18Speaker 5: They're actually kind of plentiful, especially around here in Carolina
- 13:21Speaker 5: and Western Carolina. But they don't reproduce. They'll grow up
- 13:29Speaker 5: like ten feet and then they get the blight and
- 13:31Speaker 5: they die, and they're in this cycle of dying back
- 13:34Speaker 5: and then re sprouting from their roots over and over again.
- 13:38Speaker 5: So yeah, they're not really reproducing on their own. But
- 13:40Speaker 5: we can occasionally get on the side of the road
- 13:44Speaker 5: sometimes we'll find one. Some people will tell us like, oh,
- 13:46Speaker 5: there's a chestnut flowering, and we can get seeds from
- 13:49Speaker 5: those and breed those trees, but then they die from blight,
- 13:53Speaker 5: so it's not like a permanent solution that they're reproducing
- 13:56Speaker 5: on their own.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Some estimates say they are fewer than one hundred mature
- 14:01Speaker 1: American chestnuts left in the wild. What can you tell
- 14:03Speaker 1: us about where those mature trees live and how they've
- 14:06Speaker 1: been able to survive the blight.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, we call them large surviving American chestnuts, and they're
- 14:13Speaker 5: extremely rare. Like I was saying, like there's hundreds of
- 14:16Speaker 5: millions left, but like there's a I know of a
- 14:19Speaker 5: few dozen. We have names for them, like ort There's
- 14:23Speaker 5: one tree in Pennsylvania, it's in someone's yard. It's called Ortz.
- 14:27Speaker 5: We have another tree in Virginia, Amherst Tree Erie, Pennsylvania.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So we know these trees and they have the blight,
- 14:37Speaker 5: and they've been living with the blight probably since before
- 14:40Speaker 5: I mean when the original pandemic of the blake came through,
- 14:44Speaker 5: and they seem to have a slightly elevated resistance when
- 14:48Speaker 5: we've actually crossed those trees, like bred them together and
- 14:52Speaker 5: then we gave their kids the blight, and the kids
- 14:55Speaker 5: have somewhat elevated resistance, but they're not super resistant themselves.
- 15:00Speaker 5: So they're kind of lucky trees, you could say, and
- 15:05Speaker 5: they have low levels of blight resistance.
- 15:08Speaker 1: You guys do a lot of citizen science and you
- 15:10Speaker 1: ask people to fill out a tree locator form if
- 15:12Speaker 1: they think they've spotted an American chestnut. What are some
- 15:15Speaker 1: of the strangest places you've had confirmed trees?
- 15:20Speaker 5: Well, some of the trees, you know, what's interesting is
- 15:23Speaker 5: like people brought Lewis and Clark, like the Loos and
- 15:27Speaker 5: Clark expedition brought chestnuts, or people brought them over the
- 15:30Speaker 5: Washington state, So like on the coast range in Washington,
- 15:35Speaker 5: there are chestnuts growing that don't have blight. So in
- 15:40Speaker 5: California and Washington, these are areas where strangely the blight
- 15:44Speaker 5: hasn't come and these trees are mature. There's another tree
- 15:49Speaker 5: in Belgium that was brought over before the blight that's
- 15:52Speaker 5: maybe the largest tree in the world. It's like one
- 15:56Speaker 5: hundred and twenty feet tall, and so you can actually see,
- 16:00Speaker 5: you know, these trees that you can actually see how
- 16:02Speaker 5: the tree grows now are really rare, but the West
- 16:06Speaker 5: Coast has some and Europe in our reedom has one.
- 16:10Speaker 2: So if you.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Ever get out to to reove him our freedom in Belgium.
- 16:16Speaker 5: That's one place you could see in American.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Chestnut, Jared, has there been any movement with crossing American
- 16:24Speaker 2: chestnuts with other chestnuts that are like resistant to the blight?
- 16:30Speaker 2: When I was in college, we did a little bit
- 16:33Speaker 2: of that, planting trees that were like American chestnut mixed
- 16:36Speaker 2: with something else, like a Chinese chestnut. I don't remember
- 16:39Speaker 2: exactly what it was, but just trying to find something
- 16:42Speaker 2: that could live on the landscape and be resistant to
- 16:45Speaker 2: the blight.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Yeah, So that's that been the focus of our organization
- 16:50Speaker 5: is the Chinese chestnuts, Japanese chestnuts. They they co evolved
- 16:55Speaker 5: with the blight fungus for tens of millions of years.
- 16:58Speaker 5: They have resistance and there's been a long effort starting
- 17:03Speaker 5: in the nineteen twenties to breed cross breed the American
- 17:08Speaker 5: species with the Chinese and the Japanese. And what we've
- 17:11Speaker 5: done is you get the fifty to fifty hybrids between
- 17:16Speaker 5: the two species and they tend to they have resistance
- 17:19Speaker 5: from the Asian chestnut species and they are fertile. So
- 17:24Speaker 5: we do they all the chestnut species hybridize readily, but
- 17:30Speaker 5: in order to make them grow and be competitive in
- 17:33Speaker 5: the forest. The American chestnuts grow very tall. The Chinese
- 17:36Speaker 5: chestnuts tend to be shorter orchard trees. What we're trying
- 17:39Speaker 5: to do is basically cross those hybrids back to American chestnut,
- 17:44Speaker 5: dilute out some of the Chinese traits, bring in more
- 17:48Speaker 5: of the American traits, but also select for resistance so
- 17:52Speaker 5: that we can improve improve that over time. So what
- 17:55Speaker 5: we're trying to do is kind of dilute out the
- 17:58Speaker 5: make the trees keep the resistance, but then also breed
- 18:02Speaker 5: for these tall timber type traits in the American chestnut.
- 18:07Speaker 5: And we have this citizen science organization that where people
- 18:10Speaker 5: have found trees, like from Maine all the way down
- 18:13Speaker 5: to Mississippi. They tell us, we've found a tree, it's flowering,
- 18:17Speaker 5: and we've taken pollen from our hybrid our selected hybrids
- 18:21Speaker 5: and put it on those trees to get these diverse populations.
- 18:25Speaker 6: And we have probably four to five.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Hundred orchards across the East Coast maintained by volunteers that
- 18:34Speaker 5: have been We plant the kids of these hybrids in
- 18:38Speaker 5: these orchards and we give them blight and we see
- 18:40Speaker 5: which trees survive from that, and we've continued now, I mean,
- 18:46Speaker 5: we've done this huge effort of like looking at all
- 18:48Speaker 5: these trees resistance over like the last twenty years, and
- 18:52Speaker 5: we are now crossing these best trees that have really
- 18:55Speaker 5: good resistance with each other and selecting even better kids
- 18:59Speaker 5: of the trees. So we're incrementally improving the resistance so
- 19:03Speaker 5: the trees can live on their own.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Awesome, Hey, Jared, Beyond like physical cross breeding where you're
- 19:10Speaker 3: like putting pollen on another tree, has there been any
- 19:16Speaker 3: any like lab genetic engineering to to to work on
- 19:22Speaker 3: resistance to the to the blade.
- 19:25Speaker 5: Yeah, there is a there is a what's called a
- 19:27Speaker 5: transgenic tree where it has a gene from wheat that's
- 19:31Speaker 5: put it been put into the American chestnut tree. The
- 19:35Speaker 5: gene is involved in it like detoxifies an acid that's
- 19:39Speaker 5: produced by the fungus and that has it's going under
- 19:45Speaker 5: a it's been under review by the USDA to be
- 19:48Speaker 5: able to release those trees, and we've done some assessments
- 19:53Speaker 5: on their resistance and they look they looked great initially
- 19:57Speaker 5: in the when we look at the seedlings stage and
- 20:00Speaker 5: we gave them a blight as little babies but when
- 20:03Speaker 5: you put them out in the like over time for
- 20:05Speaker 5: a longer period of time, they get pretty severe infections.
- 20:09Speaker 5: And there's a lot of susceptible trees. So what we've
- 20:12Speaker 5: learned is that the resistance is complicated. There's a lot
- 20:16Speaker 5: of there's a lot of genes involved in that, and
- 20:19Speaker 5: so doing that cross breeding brings in a lot of
- 20:22Speaker 5: those genes involved in the resistance to give it more
- 20:26Speaker 5: durable resistance than any single gene could give the trees.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Jared, why does it matter? What does the American chestnut
- 20:34Speaker 1: provide that our eastern forests are missing without them there?
- 20:39Speaker 5: I mean, I would love to see chestnuts on the
- 20:43Speaker 5: mountains in North Carolina. They grow on top of the
- 20:47Speaker 5: mountains with some of the most beautiful places in the Appalachians,
- 20:51Speaker 5: and they used to provide nuts every year, and the
- 20:55Speaker 5: wildlife carrying capacity of the forests diminished as a result
- 21:00Speaker 5: of loss of the chestnut, And there are insects and
- 21:03Speaker 5: things that also were dependent on the tree, and we
- 21:07Speaker 5: would love to see like in this there's like strip
- 21:10Speaker 5: mind sits in throughout Appalachia where the chestnuts grow really
- 21:14Speaker 5: well on that really poor acidic soil. So I'd love
- 21:19Speaker 5: to see, you know, reclamation of some of the mind
- 21:22Speaker 5: lands with chestnuts going forward.
- 21:25Speaker 1: For people who are listening right now, what can they
- 21:27Speaker 1: do to help the American chestnut.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Well, we are a citizen science organization and a nonprofit
- 21:34Speaker 5: organization and we have we're funded by members and so
- 21:39Speaker 5: people donate to us and that helps us. What we're
- 21:43Speaker 5: doing is a lot of genomic testing on our trees
- 21:45Speaker 5: to make the breeding go faster, growing out the best
- 21:49Speaker 5: kids and then giving them blight and seeing which you know,
- 21:52Speaker 5: really confirming you have resistance. So if you live in
- 21:55Speaker 5: the East Coast, you can join your local chapter. We
- 21:58Speaker 5: have sixteen state chapters across the East Coast. But also
- 22:02Speaker 5: just donate to TACF to help us with some of
- 22:05Speaker 5: our work to do the cross breeding and genomics to
- 22:09Speaker 5: better understand resistance and make the breeding work a lot better.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us, Jared, and thanks for helping
- 22:15Speaker 1: save the American chestnut.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Thanks guys, Thanks Jared.
- 22:18Speaker 1: By now, I saw you two boys nodding along when
- 22:22Speaker 1: he said that there is a mature one living in Eerie, Pennsylvania.
- 22:27Speaker 2: That's Brodie's next.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's my old stomping ground. So I didn't know
- 22:30Speaker 3: that it's just just that's where it came from.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I know several that are living on the family farm,
- 22:35Speaker 2: but they they're just stump sprouting from old stumps.
- 22:38Speaker 1: There's babies.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, they only get like he said, ten ten twelve
- 22:42Speaker 2: feet tall and then die.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Did you know that before today? That like, that's what
- 22:46Speaker 1: that was and that's why it was doing it?
- 22:48Speaker 2: Yep, Yeah, yeah, I mean there's I don't I don't
- 22:52Speaker 2: know how many there are exactly on the farm, but
- 22:55Speaker 2: I mean you can it's nothing to walk for five
- 22:58Speaker 2: minutes in the woods and find a couple of them.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I think he said there's hundreds of millions that just
- 23:03Speaker 1: never reached maturity.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they're all over the place. But yeah, man, it's
- 23:06Speaker 2: such a shame. Those trees were like I mean, I've
- 23:09Speaker 2: heard them called like the redwoods the East East. Yeah,
- 23:13Speaker 2: just huge trees that I couldn't imagine what it would
- 23:17Speaker 2: have been like back in the day to see that
- 23:19Speaker 2: mm hm.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Deers A lot of critters would have been eating them.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah for sure. Yeah, we have some Chinese chestnuts on
- 23:25Speaker 2: the farm, and man, when those things start falling, the
- 23:28Speaker 2: deer hammering them, they love them all right.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Moving on our next segment is Gear Talk.
- 23:37Speaker 7: Let's talk about geara beat, Let's talk about the Beat.
- 23:42Speaker 7: Let's talk about blues in cano patterns with Yon d.
- 23:46Speaker 7: Let's talk about Let's talk about gear. Let's talk.
- 23:53Speaker 1: This week for gear Talk, we are talking about our
- 23:55Speaker 1: favorite First Light gear. Their season opener sales happening right
- 23:59Speaker 1: now over on first dot com. This is one of
- 24:01Speaker 1: their biggest sales and just in time for hunting season.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You can get up to forty percent off select bass layers,
- 24:07Speaker 1: outer where pants, and more. The deals are happening now
- 24:10Speaker 1: through Sunday, August twenty fourth. Again, that's first slight dot
- 24:13Speaker 1: Com for some of their biggest discounts of the year.
- 24:17Speaker 1: All right, Seth, you go first. What are you talking
- 24:19Speaker 1: to us about today?
- 24:21Speaker 2: I'm gonna talk to you about my favorite hunting pant
- 24:24Speaker 2: of all time, the Corget Foundry pan m Man. I
- 24:29Speaker 2: still have the original pair that I got when these
- 24:33Speaker 2: things first came out years ago, probably five six years ago,
- 24:37Speaker 2: don't even remember. But I still use them every fall.
- 24:40Speaker 2: They can't wear them out. I like them because they
- 24:44Speaker 2: have knee pads, which I like to have in a
- 24:48Speaker 2: hunting pant, especially when you're doing stuff like analoe punting
- 24:51Speaker 2: and whatnot crawling around. It's nice tom kneepads. And they
- 24:56Speaker 2: got the waterproof knees and seat which is helpful.
- 24:59Speaker 1: And they are thirty percent off this week again. This
- 25:02Speaker 1: sale goes through Sunday. What hunts You're gonna be wearing
- 25:04Speaker 1: them on this year?
- 25:07Speaker 2: Pretty much everything I'm hunting, elk, deer, antelope. I'll probably
- 25:11Speaker 2: wear them when I go back East white tail hunting,
- 25:14Speaker 2: depending on the weather. Yeah, I kind of wear them
- 25:17Speaker 2: for everything. I honestly just wear them when I'm in
- 25:20Speaker 2: the office. I wear them in the office. I wore
- 25:23Speaker 2: them for two weeks in Alaska recently.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Good endorsement.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I wear them all the time. I like just
- 25:31Speaker 2: general fixing stuff around the house. Because you got knee pads,
- 25:34Speaker 2: you're always you know, on your knees for something.
- 25:37Speaker 1: So that is the corrugate foundry pant thirty percent off
- 25:41Speaker 1: for the next few days. All right, I'm gonna go next.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I am going to talk to you about the men's
- 25:46Speaker 1: kiln Long John that is twenty percent off during this sale.
- 25:50Speaker 1: This is my favorite bass layer. It's my most used
- 25:52Speaker 1: bass layer. My guess would be that it's the most
- 25:54Speaker 1: used bass layer among the crew, and if I could
- 25:57Speaker 1: only have like a singular bass layer for the rest
- 25:59Speaker 1: of my life, it would be this, the Kiln Long John.
- 26:03Speaker 1: They're easy to hike in. They also work great if
- 26:05Speaker 1: you're still hunting. I wore them when I killed the
- 26:07Speaker 1: Bowl last year and it was fifty degrees on opening day.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I also wore them when I killed Amui on the
- 26:12Speaker 1: last week of the season when it was negative eighteen
- 26:15Speaker 1: degrees wind chill. They're comfortable enough to sleep in if
- 26:18Speaker 1: I'm tentting in cold weather. Wear then when I'm snowblowing
- 26:21Speaker 1: my driveway. And the badass skiers in the office, like
- 26:25Speaker 1: Corey Caulkins, he'll wear them for skiing. He especially likes
- 26:28Speaker 1: the ones that have the zippers in them three hundred
- 26:31Speaker 1: eight to reviews on First Light's website four point eight
- 26:34Speaker 1: one stars. So they are just universally loved. Again. That's
- 26:37Speaker 1: the Kiln Long John sizes available small to two axl.
- 26:42Speaker 1: They're also available in the women's version, the Kiln Long Jane,
- 26:46Speaker 1: and that is twenty percent off right now as well.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It's a great piece.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Like I said, I genuinely wear it all fall.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I just love wool next to skin.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I ran them from like October to eight.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Yeah, half the year.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's legit, all right, Brody, what are you talking
- 27:04Speaker 1: about today?
- 27:06Speaker 3: The dirt Bag Duffel. Uh, I've been running these things
- 27:11Speaker 3: for I don't know, like these things have been out
- 27:13Speaker 3: for what four or five years now? At least I
- 27:17Speaker 3: have the original. I've uh a couple of the big ones,
- 27:20Speaker 3: a couple of the Meetium ones like and I have
- 27:23Speaker 3: had no trouble with any of them. Their their bomb proof,
- 27:26Speaker 3: they're durable, they're great when you got to take stuff
- 27:31Speaker 3: into like a wet environment like Southeast Alaska or like
- 27:37Speaker 3: the river trip that we're gonna do later this year.
- 27:42Speaker 3: They're just they're just a really good duffle and they
- 27:45Speaker 3: got you know, extra features like pockets and things like that.
- 27:48Speaker 3: You can carry it like a backpack through the airport
- 27:50Speaker 3: if you want. For a very long time, I was
- 27:55Speaker 3: a Patagonia black Hole supporter, and the dirt Bag Duffel
- 28:01Speaker 3: kind of took over. That's the large took over that
- 28:04Speaker 3: spot for me. You can fit a week's where the
- 28:08Speaker 3: stuff in there easily. And the big one.
- 28:11Speaker 1: So yeah, it's it's the thing that I travel with
- 28:14Speaker 1: the most, so much so that I had to get
- 28:15Speaker 1: a second one because my wife wanted to have one
- 28:17Speaker 1: as well. That's that's the medium I use for a
- 28:20Speaker 1: lot of traveling. They also what's the material on them?
- 28:25Speaker 3: It's TPU rip stop. But you know it's got that well,
- 28:30Speaker 3: it's got like a coating on it, you know, a water.
- 28:33Speaker 1: That's what I was gonna get it. It has the
- 28:35Speaker 1: lid that I think they call the launch pad and
- 28:37Speaker 1: you open it up. If you're hunting and you're like
- 28:39Speaker 1: changing boots and you stand on that thing, it doesn't
- 28:41Speaker 1: matter if there's snow or water underneath it. Your feet
- 28:44Speaker 1: are not going to get wet. I love the dirt
- 28:46Speaker 1: bag Duffel and that is twenty percent off this week
- 28:49Speaker 1: as well.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I just had that thing in Southeast Alaska. Yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 2: when we're up there, and when we were leaving it
- 28:55Speaker 2: was pouring rain.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Yeah, and you gotta set your stuff out before the
- 29:00Speaker 3: float playing guests there.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I had that thing sitting in the rain for
- 29:04Speaker 2: a while and it was fine.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah, they have small, medium, and large. I'll travel with
- 29:09Speaker 1: all my hunting clothes in there in the fall, and
- 29:12Speaker 1: then again if we're just like staying in a hotel, somewhere.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's a Duffel that my wife and I both use.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Again.
- 29:18Speaker 1: That is the season opener sale where one hundred and
- 29:20Speaker 1: twenty first Light items are discounted this week. The deals
- 29:23Speaker 1: in on Sunday, August twenty fourth. Head over to first
- 29:27Speaker 1: light dot com to gear up before it's too late.
- 29:30Speaker 1: All right, we're halfway through the show, Phil, Let's take
- 29:32Speaker 1: a break for some listener feedback. What's the chat I
- 29:34Speaker 1: have to say?
- 29:34Speaker 8: Yeah, let's do I get those questions in? Cameron says.
- 29:38Speaker 8: Question for the crew, what are some tips to keep
- 29:40Speaker 8: meat from spoiling on warmer days and longer packouts. Cameron
- 29:43Speaker 8: says that he's doing his first elk hunt DIY style
- 29:46Speaker 8: in Kentucky.
- 29:48Speaker 3: I'll chime in, get the skin off, but I, like
- 29:53Speaker 3: you would be surprised how long skinned out out quarters
- 29:58Speaker 3: can last and more weather if you get the skin
- 30:01Speaker 3: off and hang them in a shady spot with some breeze, like,
- 30:06Speaker 3: it's not a problem. If it's seventy degrees out during
- 30:09Speaker 3: the day. You can hang that meat longer than you
- 30:13Speaker 3: think you can. If you get that skin off and
- 30:16Speaker 3: hang it in a shady spot.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah, as long as it gets that crusted. Yeah, you'd
- 30:22Speaker 2: be surprised. I was surprised when we were in Africa.
- 30:26Speaker 2: There's no refrigeration there. They hung that meat for days.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Yeah. If you get like one cool night to get
- 30:32Speaker 3: the interior you know of the meat cooled, You're gonna
- 30:37Speaker 3: be fine for like a few days. It's just not
- 30:41Speaker 3: something I worry about a whole lot.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Airflow very important, and as we've talked about on previous
- 30:46Speaker 1: episodes of Trivia, if the conditions are too extreme, you
- 30:50Speaker 1: could get bone rot, especially around those joints are gonna
- 30:53Speaker 1: hold a lot of heat. Being a here in Kentucky,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I'm guessing that thing's not gonna be away from a
- 30:57Speaker 1: cooler for too long. So just get on as soon
- 31:00Speaker 1: as you can and.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Keep it dry. Like, if that stuff's hanging and it
- 31:03Speaker 3: gets wet, it's gonna go bad a lot faster.
- 31:08Speaker 8: Let's see Freddy Rick and the man says, I'm taking
- 31:11Speaker 8: my wife out antelope hunting tomorrow. What's the fun in
- 31:13Speaker 8: the field? Meal we should make? If successful?
- 31:16Speaker 1: Mmm? I love.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 31:18Speaker 1: If it was like season four of Meat Eater, Steve's
- 31:22Speaker 1: on a solo analo punt and he cooks up some
- 31:25Speaker 1: bucknuts in butter. It's it's real easy. All you need
- 31:28Speaker 1: is a source of heat, a skillet and some butter
- 31:31Speaker 1: and and that's a pretty authentic way to enjoy a
- 31:36Speaker 1: successful anelope punt.
- 31:37Speaker 2: You gotta go.
- 31:38Speaker 3: If you do those, don't go high heat or they'll explode.
- 31:41Speaker 3: You gotta take your time with them.
- 31:43Speaker 2: I like tenderloin fresh in the field, just because, especially
- 31:47Speaker 2: with an antelope, if you get that crossed on those things,
- 31:51Speaker 2: like you end up just taking too much. Like just
- 31:53Speaker 2: eat those things.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Fresh, you know, want those to go in the freezer.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, just eat them fresh over fire or something,
- 31:59Speaker 2: and they're fantast.
- 32:00Speaker 3: The heart would be good to cut that up right
- 32:03Speaker 3: away and eat that.
- 32:05Speaker 8: Drifting flies has been just absolutely stoked in the chat.
- 32:08Speaker 8: This whole show just mostly all caps Trump style. But
- 32:11Speaker 8: he says Brody favorite streamer, He's gonna target some big
- 32:14Speaker 8: browns very soon.
- 32:18Speaker 3: There's an old old I don't know if they still
- 32:22Speaker 3: make it. I bet you they do. It's called the Takili.
- 32:26Speaker 3: I wish we could pull up a picture of it.
- 32:28Speaker 3: It's got like a shiny like copper colored UHL body
- 32:35Speaker 3: and then like a bright like yellow marriboo tail and
- 32:39Speaker 3: some big bright rubber legs on it, and like in
- 32:43Speaker 3: the fall, it drives those big brown trout insane. It's
- 32:49Speaker 3: a good one.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Do you tie your own streamers back in the day?
- 32:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah, man, I tied a lot of flies. I
- 32:53Speaker 3: still have all this stuff, you know, I just don't.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Waiting for your sons to get into it.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you think I have so many flies that
- 33:01Speaker 3: don't now I don't need to tie any I don't know.
- 33:04Speaker 3: But yeah, that's a real good one. There's a bunch
- 33:09Speaker 3: of like I'm not like I kind of stopped fly
- 33:13Speaker 3: fishing as much. There's been like a new wave of
- 33:17Speaker 3: fly tying that's gone on, like especially in the streamer world,
- 33:21Speaker 3: playing that to me just bigger, Like it's trended towards
- 33:25Speaker 3: bigger in the last several years. Like Kelly Gallup at
- 33:28Speaker 3: the slide In He's got these real big flies that
- 33:32Speaker 3: tend to have weird names like sex Dungeon and things
- 33:35Speaker 3: like that. And then Blaine Chocolates, God, what game changer.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Like a lot of people are throwing those and they
- 33:43Speaker 3: tend to tend to if you want to like specifically
- 33:46Speaker 3: target like a brown shout thirty inches and larger. You
- 33:49Speaker 3: need to be throwing a fly that's six inches long
- 33:51Speaker 3: or bigger, I would say, because otherwise you're just gonna
- 33:55Speaker 3: be catching a lot of sixteen.
- 33:56Speaker 8: Inches Mississippi, says Spencer, Birdie and Steth. What's your favorite
- 34:02Speaker 8: feature that you look for in a skinning knife or features?
- 34:08Speaker 1: Probably just how it feels in my hand. I know,
- 34:11Speaker 1: like my favorite knife then I keep in my gun cabinet.
- 34:15Speaker 1: You could put a blindfold on me and hand me
- 34:17Speaker 1: all my knives and I would pick that one, I
- 34:19Speaker 1: think every single time, just because it feels right in
- 34:22Speaker 1: my hand. So as far as what you're looking for,
- 34:26Speaker 1: I don't know specifics. When you're just looking at something,
- 34:28Speaker 1: how's it feel in your hand. I'll tell you one thing.
- 34:30Speaker 1: I don't care for a gut hook on my nod.
- 34:32Speaker 1: It just like gets in the way. And it seems
- 34:35Speaker 1: like those were very fashionable for a moment and they're
- 34:37Speaker 1: becoming less fashionable now. But I'm just like pretty much
- 34:40Speaker 1: immediately not interested if it has a big gut hook
- 34:43Speaker 1: on it.
- 34:44Speaker 3: I would say something without an overly large blade. I
- 34:48Speaker 3: think you know when you're when you're dealing with stuff
- 34:51Speaker 3: laying on the ground, and getting skin off, like a
- 34:54Speaker 3: big long blade is just going to be detrimental. And
- 34:59Speaker 3: I I like like with wise and narrower ones. I
- 35:03Speaker 3: know some people like that wider blade, but I like
- 35:06Speaker 3: something a little narrower, a little more nimble.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that, something narrower.
- 35:12Speaker 3: But those heavy duty like sturdy knives with like broader blades.
- 35:17Speaker 3: When you get into like pop and hip joints and
- 35:19Speaker 3: stuff like that, that's where they come in handy. But yeah,
- 35:23Speaker 3: it's something that's sharp and something that feels good, something
- 35:26Speaker 3: that holds an edge, Seth.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I like something with a little bit more of a
- 35:32Speaker 2: rounded tip, not so pointy on the tip. It also
- 35:36Speaker 2: depends on what I'm skinning, Like if I'm not worried
- 35:39Speaker 2: about putting holes in it, like a deer, usually you know,
- 35:42Speaker 2: it doesn't matter that much. But if I'm skinning something
- 35:46Speaker 2: like a coyote or something that I want to tan
- 35:48Speaker 2: and keep the high nice, I like a little boy
- 35:51Speaker 2: rounded tip so I don't punch holes in it.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Let's see one morning for now.
- 35:54Speaker 8: Phil jure Ethan says, Seth. My buddy Sean just won
- 35:57Speaker 8: the Michigan Walleye Tour for the second straight year. When
- 36:00Speaker 8: you're at some filets down next weekend. Best way to
- 36:03Speaker 8: cook them? Thanks, man.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I just like fried walleye. It's hard to beat that.
- 36:10Speaker 2: At one time took a small, smaller walleye filets and
- 36:13Speaker 2: like rolled them up lengthwise and you wrap those in bacon.
- 36:18Speaker 2: It's kind of like a like a walleye pin wheel
- 36:20Speaker 2: tank and just bake those or put them on the grill,
- 36:25Speaker 2: you know, hit them with some butter and whatnot. That
- 36:27Speaker 2: was pretty good. Brody.
- 36:28Speaker 1: You been eating a lot of walleye this summer.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's my like my wife like some
- 36:34Speaker 3: panco crusted, Yeah, like pan fried, not like deep fried,
- 36:38Speaker 3: and that's very good. Another thing their walleye is pretty delicate,
- 36:43Speaker 3: but you can pull it off if you're careful. Is
- 36:46Speaker 3: you get them on a on a griddle, like an
- 36:48Speaker 3: outdoor griddle like a black stone or whatever, and just
- 36:51Speaker 3: do black and Cajun black and filets. Those are real good.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:55Speaker 1: You go to the meat eater dot com. You'll find
- 36:56Speaker 1: a lot of good walleye recipes there. H Jesse Griff
- 37:00Speaker 1: I think it was probably four or five years ago
- 37:02Speaker 1: at this point. Dead beer battered fish, which that recipe
- 37:06Speaker 1: would work great for walleye as well. That's what I'd recommend.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Chester, and I did one of those. It was a
- 37:13Speaker 2: meteor cooked or something episode where we fried walleye and
- 37:19Speaker 2: it was fantastic Panco style.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Even though Chester can't even enjoy it. Nope, just gotta look.
- 37:24Speaker 2: He's just gotta look and smell all right.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Moving on, Our next segment is one Minute Fishing.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I feel lucky. We'll do you Punk, go ahead.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Make my cast. One Minute Fishing is where we go
- 37:40Speaker 1: live to someone who's fishing and they have one minute
- 37:42Speaker 1: to catch a fish, and if they're successful, we'll make
- 37:45Speaker 1: a five hundred dollars donation to a conservation group. This week,
- 37:48Speaker 1: our angler is American hero Pat Dirkin. He's on Lake
- 37:52Speaker 1: Vermillion in Minnesota and fishing for a donation to sturgeon
- 37:55Speaker 1: for tomorrow. Pat, Welcome to the show.
- 37:58Speaker 6: Hey, Spencer, Pat's got a.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Fish he's holding right now.
- 38:05Speaker 3: They've already done.
- 38:06Speaker 6: Wow, we just reeled it in just now.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Okay, Well that that's a good sign. How'd you catch it?
- 38:15Speaker 6: Late? And tell him what you caught? Speak up? A
- 38:21Speaker 6: small mouth?
- 38:22Speaker 1: Pass, a very nice small mouth. He's been putting on
- 38:25Speaker 1: his feedbag for fall. That thing's got a nice gut
- 38:27Speaker 1: on it. Pat, you have a few guests with you today.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Tell us about your fishing buddies.
- 38:33Speaker 9: First of all, here is Layton Lates, my nine year
- 38:36Speaker 9: old grandson from Rochester, Minnesota, over my left shoulder. Here
- 38:42Speaker 9: it's my daughter, Leah. This is my oldest daughter. She
- 38:47Speaker 9: was fourteen years in the Navy Spencer.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Wow. Cool.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Now, I didn't know that they let cheeseheads fish in Minnesota.
- 38:59Speaker 1: So why lake for me? Pat?
- 39:02Speaker 2: Well?
- 39:02Speaker 9: We it's kind of a long story, but Leah walked
- 39:05Speaker 9: into a good opportunity to pick up one week rental
- 39:09Speaker 9: up here around Lake Vermilion. And I hear Lake Vermillion.
- 39:14Speaker 9: They make sure you know it's spelled with one L.
- 39:17Speaker 9: But it's a lake with three hundred and sixty one islands,
- 39:22Speaker 9: some big areas the west of Ely, Minnesota.
- 39:26Speaker 1: And and what's the plan for that small mouth? Is
- 39:28Speaker 1: he gonna go in the live well or back in
- 39:30Speaker 1: the lake?
- 39:31Speaker 9: Lay Lighton says, live well, Okay, that means we'll be
- 39:35Speaker 9: eating him for dinner probably.
- 39:38Speaker 1: I like that attitude. How's the fishing been so far
- 39:41Speaker 1: this week?
- 39:41Speaker 6: Pat Well? Our first day was Tuesday.
- 39:44Speaker 9: We got four walleyes and let's see a couple of
- 39:49Speaker 9: small malls perch. They were getting mainly perched for fishing.
- 39:53Speaker 9: Slip bobbers here on arms Strong excuse me, Armstrong bay.
- 39:59Speaker 9: And so this is a we caught maybe a half
- 40:03Speaker 9: dozen nice percha this morning and now it's capping it.
- 40:06Speaker 9: Get a little floor until this.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Guy gets Okay, So for one minute fishing, are you
- 40:11Speaker 1: targeting small mouth? Are you going for something else?
- 40:14Speaker 9: We've been targeting basically perch, perch and bluegills, And once
- 40:18Speaker 9: while when these when these random small almost shows up
- 40:22Speaker 9: and smacks that little crappie you know, sized jig, and
- 40:26Speaker 9: once a while, we've got gotten them in the boat today.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Okay, So one minute fishing, he's looking for a perch
- 40:33Speaker 1: of bluegill or a small mouth. And you said you're
- 40:36Speaker 1: tossing jigs at them.
- 40:38Speaker 9: Yeah, we got we have what we're doing. We have
- 40:43Speaker 9: this little chunks of worm on there that's again like
- 40:50Speaker 9: a number eight, number six that thereabouts. Put this in
- 40:56Speaker 9: the live well, hang on one second.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Okay uh. And then after Pat gets the fish in
- 41:01Speaker 1: his live well, we're gonna start one minute fishing, and
- 41:03Speaker 1: for the first time ever, we're gonna have three anglers. Uh,
- 41:06Speaker 1: trying to fish for that donation today. So Pat, whenever
- 41:10Speaker 1: you guys make your first cast, you're one minute of
- 41:12Speaker 1: fishing will start.
- 41:15Speaker 6: I'm gonna have linke and go first.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Let's let's have you all. Can you all fish at once?
- 41:20Speaker 3: Pat?
- 41:21Speaker 2: Can?
- 41:21Speaker 1: Can we do all three of you in that one minute?
- 41:24Speaker 6: We can do them all at once?
- 41:25Speaker 1: Okay, there's gonna be a little chaos and the lund.
- 41:28Speaker 6: Yep, let me get mine. You got quick spencer?
- 41:32Speaker 1: Okay? Pat is reapplying a night crawler seth Lake Vermilion?
- 41:41Speaker 1: Ever been there?
- 41:42Speaker 2: Never been? But it's definitely one I want to visit.
- 41:46Speaker 2: I've heard lots of good things about.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Familion, just just that general part of Minnesota.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Yeah, Pat, do they call you captain in that boat?
- 41:55Speaker 6: They call me a lot worse?
- 41:59Speaker 1: Okay, Pat is everybody?
- 42:00Speaker 2: Are you ready?
- 42:01Speaker 5: Okay?
- 42:01Speaker 6: Late and you're ready? Okay, Laten you go first lake casts?
- 42:10Speaker 1: All right, grandson has made his cast. Pat has made
- 42:13Speaker 1: his cast. There one minute has begun. Pat, Are we
- 42:20Speaker 1: just running slip bobbers?
- 42:24Speaker 6: Sorry?
- 42:24Speaker 1: Are we just running slip bobbers?
- 42:27Speaker 6: There on.
- 42:32Speaker 2: The wind? Is?
- 42:33Speaker 1: We're losing Pat's audio?
- 42:38Speaker 2: So he got one?
- 42:40Speaker 1: Is he really one?
- 42:41Speaker 3: In.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Pat Durkin the only angler to be successful twice at
- 42:50Speaker 1: one minute fishing both times was that a yellow perch.
- 42:54Speaker 6: This one's a smaller, but he's okay.
- 42:58Speaker 1: And both times Pat has been successful. He's done it
- 43:01Speaker 1: with a yellow perch. Once in Idaho and now once
- 43:04Speaker 1: in Minnesota.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Well done, Pat, Captain Pat Dirkin, you bet that's awesome.
- 43:10Speaker 1: In the old land, in the land in Lake Vermillion,
- 43:14Speaker 1: he's just won a five hundred dollars donation to Sturgeon
- 43:18Speaker 1: for Tomorrow. Pat, you were really stoked to make a
- 43:21Speaker 1: donation to Sturgeon for Tomorrow. Tell us about them.
- 43:25Speaker 9: Yeah, this goes back in my in my first one.
- 43:28Speaker 9: It's a little bit Spencer and I was a young
- 43:31Speaker 9: reporter back in the nineteen eighties, a group called a
- 43:34Speaker 9: group of local fishermen in the Lake Winnebago area which
- 43:38Speaker 9: is oshcost, Wisconsin. That region, they wanted to get more
- 43:41Speaker 9: involved in the science aspect of sturgeon management, and they
- 43:47Speaker 9: formed this group called Sturgeon for Tomorrow and they've been
- 43:51Speaker 9: running now close to forty forty years or so. And
- 43:56Speaker 9: every spring they helped organize what's called Sturgeon Patroll and
- 44:01Speaker 9: they put guys on the Wolf River with a certain
- 44:03Speaker 9: spawn and make sure they don't get poached. They used
- 44:06Speaker 9: to be a real bad poaching problem in that in
- 44:08Speaker 9: that region. Back and all the way through the early eighties,
- 44:12Speaker 9: I used to do newspaper stake cufs basically right, ride
- 44:16Speaker 9: a lot of wardens and spend the night watching for
- 44:19Speaker 9: poaching it on.
- 44:20Speaker 6: That Wolf River. But these guys, that's one of the
- 44:22Speaker 6: one of the very very many projects they get involved in.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Well you just saved a few more surgeon with that
- 44:29Speaker 1: five hundred dollars donation. Well done. The legend of Pat
- 44:33Speaker 1: Dirkin in one minute fishing grows.
- 44:36Speaker 6: Well, thanks you guys, Thanks for joining us.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Pat, Pat, good luck with the rest of the week.
- 44:40Speaker 1: High fives all around in the boat. I'm tickled.
- 44:44Speaker 2: That was great.
- 44:45Speaker 1: That was fun.
- 44:46Speaker 3: He should just be on every week. Then we have
- 44:49Speaker 3: people that catch fish. Pat.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Pat is great because he's obviously a retired fella. I
- 44:55Speaker 1: could text him on a Wednesday and be like, Pat,
- 44:57Speaker 1: we need someone for one minute fishing Tomorrow's like okay,
- 45:00Speaker 1: I'm in yep. So you'll see a lot more of
- 45:02Speaker 1: Pat Dirk and on media radios.
- 45:04Speaker 2: One minute fishing.
- 45:07Speaker 1: All right, Moving on our next segment is the Price
- 45:10Speaker 1: is Right.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Here.

- 45:18Speaker 3: It's the Price is Right.
- 45:21Speaker 4: Morris, come on down Anderson come on down. The next
- 45:28Speaker 4: two contestants on media radios. The Price is Right Now,
- 45:33Speaker 4: here's your host, Spencer newh.

- 45:42Speaker 2: He just does that. You know, let's not free.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Recorded or nothing.
- 45:44Speaker 1: No, no, that's that's live Phil in the studio. Now,
- 45:47Speaker 1: this game is really simple. Phil is going to tell
- 45:50Speaker 1: you about a product from the med Eater universe, and
- 45:52Speaker 1: you need to guess its price. The player with the
- 45:55Speaker 1: closest answer without going over will be declared the winner.
- 45:58Speaker 1: If both players go over, then you'll both be told
- 46:01Speaker 1: to try again, and the chat should play along as well,
- 46:04Speaker 1: because whoever has the closest answer to the correct answer,
- 46:08Speaker 1: we'll get a shout out. And none of them are
- 46:10Speaker 1: going to cheat. They have all vowed to be very honest.
- 46:13Speaker 3: How many of these are we doing? Just one?
- 46:15Speaker 1: Three of them? We've got three of them. There are
- 46:16Speaker 1: three products today. Have either of you boys played mediate
- 46:19Speaker 1: Radius prices right before?
- 46:21Speaker 2: Nope, I did. I played once in.
- 46:22Speaker 1: One Okay, we've got the veteran seth here then bringing
- 46:26Speaker 1: all that experience.
- 46:27Speaker 3: What's surprised? What are we playing for?
- 46:29Speaker 1: We'll find out in a second. Phil tell us about
- 46:32Speaker 1: the first item up forbid.
- 46:35Speaker 8: Our first item today is a guided nil Guy and
- 46:38Speaker 8: whitetail hunt on the famous King Ranch in Texas. Here's
- 46:41Speaker 8: your chance to hunt one of the largest pieces of
- 46:43Speaker 8: private land in the world. At eight hundred and twenty
- 46:46Speaker 8: five thousand acres, the King Ranch is bigger than Rhode Island.
- 46:49Speaker 8: This property is home to eighteen thousand nil Guy, which
- 46:52Speaker 8: got their start on the King Ranch after a stocking
- 46:54Speaker 8: from the San Diego Zoological Garden a century ago. The
- 46:57Speaker 8: package includes a nil Guy bowland, a management white tail
- 47:00Speaker 8: buck that's guaranteed to score between one hundred and thirty
- 47:02Speaker 8: and one hundred and forty inches. You'll also get two
- 47:04Speaker 8: nights lodging at the King Ranch, but meals are not included.
- 47:07Speaker 1: That's right, Phil, But keep in mind it's a four
- 47:09Speaker 1: hunter minimum, so you better have three buddies with deep
- 47:13Speaker 1: pockets just like you.
- 47:14Speaker 3: So we got a four hundred price.
- 47:16Speaker 1: We're just gonna do for one hunter, one hunter price,
- 47:19Speaker 1: and this gets you a nilghai bull, a management buck
- 47:23Speaker 1: that they say will be an eight or nine pointer
- 47:26Speaker 1: that is over five and a half years old and
- 47:28Speaker 1: will score between one hundred and thirty one hundred and
- 47:31Speaker 1: thirty and one hundred forty inches. And you have two
- 47:35Speaker 1: nights at the King Ranch, but.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Two nights three days a hunt or something like.
- 47:38Speaker 1: I think I think it's two full days. They are
- 47:40Speaker 1: very efficient.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I guess on the King.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Right, I killed a white tail buck about eighty yards
- 47:46Speaker 2: from the King Ranch border that they might have been.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Living on the King Ranch. You killed yourself? Was it
- 47:51Speaker 1: a high fence? There? Was it a litw low fence?
- 47:53Speaker 1: Low fence? Yeah, you don't even need a high fence
- 47:56Speaker 1: when you own Rhode Island.
- 47:57Speaker 3: Oh, I know, it's a lot of can't fathom.
- 48:00Speaker 2: I'd like to say that that buck was living on
- 48:02Speaker 2: the King Ranch and I got to get that one
- 48:04Speaker 2: for freaking.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Ranch buck again. The package is a guided hunt for
- 48:08Speaker 1: a bull nil guy, a one hundred and thirty five
- 48:12Speaker 1: inch white tail, and two nights of lodging at the
- 48:15Speaker 1: famous King Ranch in Texas. And remember you cannot go over.
- 48:19Speaker 1: If both of you go over, you'll both be told
- 48:22Speaker 1: to try again. Seth Are you ready, I'm ready, Brody,
- 48:29Speaker 1: are you ready? Okay, making a small change to his
- 48:34Speaker 1: answer for one person to go to the King ranch
- 48:37Speaker 1: and kill themselves a nil guy and a white tail.
- 48:40Speaker 1: All right, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 48:43Speaker 1: st saying ten thousand, five hundred, Brody saying eight thousand,
- 48:48Speaker 1: nine hundred. The correct answer is lower than both of those,
- 48:54Speaker 1: so you'll both need to try again. We know it
- 48:56Speaker 1: is less than eight thousand, nine hundred. They are revisiting
- 49:01Speaker 1: their whiteboards and coming up with a new answer. Brody,
- 49:06Speaker 1: very quick, seth are you ready reveal your answers? We
- 49:09Speaker 1: have set saying six thousand, three hundred fifty dollars. Brody
- 49:14Speaker 1: says six thousand, nine hundred dollars. Ooh, the correct answer
- 49:20Speaker 1: is eight thousand, five hundred dollars, giving Brody that first
- 49:25Speaker 1: point he was only four hundred dollars off with his
- 49:27Speaker 1: first guest. Now, a nilguy cow hunt is four thousand,
- 49:31Speaker 1: four hundred, a combo dove hunt and saltwater fishing trip
- 49:35Speaker 1: is two thousand, four hundred, and I've got redfish two
- 49:40Speaker 1: hundred from the King rancher.
- 49:41Speaker 3: Right off the bank of the King. Well like casting
- 49:43Speaker 3: towards the back king.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Okay, so you boys are very familiar.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Phil.
- 49:49Speaker 1: How'd the chat do?
- 49:50Speaker 5: Uh?
- 49:51Speaker 8: Well, we had several people getting right on the money.
- 49:53Speaker 8: I convinced they cheated. Unfortunately, I just I don't trust
- 49:57Speaker 8: anybody but bull site archery. Guess eight grand. So I'm
- 50:00Speaker 8: gonna give him. I'm gonna give him the point.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Well points, full side archery. That just goes to show
- 50:04Speaker 1: if you're gonna cheat, you can't cheat right on the money.
- 50:07Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, exactly, You're gonna have to fool me U.
- 50:11Speaker 1: And we can still see Pat Dirk and fishing. He's
- 50:14Speaker 1: still in our waiting room there. Yeah, we're watching some
- 50:19Speaker 1: fancy camera work. Now, looks like the boat is moving
- 50:22Speaker 1: around all right. Well, maybe check in Pat later. Pil
- 50:25Speaker 1: tell us about the second item forbid?
- 50:29Speaker 8: Yeah, sorry, stopping all the things. Next up, we have
- 50:34Speaker 8: the one hundred two piece Deluxe Pro Kit from Banjo Minnow.

- 51:02Speaker 10: Is the man banjoe memo is true. The most exciting
- 51:07Speaker 10: thing I've seen in a mighty long time predator fisher
- 51:11Speaker 10: genetically progred too a jack and eat crippled dying meadows.
- 51:15Speaker 10: Banjoe middle perfectly mimics the spastic action of a wounded middle,
- 51:19Speaker 10: a movement so realistic and so irresistible to predator fish
- 51:23Speaker 10: that it could actually trigger a genetic response.
- 51:27Speaker 2: All that wild m anything.
- 51:34Speaker 10: Has proved itself again and again and again. They didn't
- 51:38Speaker 10: willow fish every fishing lure in bows. We had made
- 51:42Speaker 10: a fishing lore that actually made fish fight, even if
- 51:46Speaker 10: they weren't hungry.
- 51:47Speaker 1: A genetic response everywhere you want to fish fish talk.
- 51:53Speaker 2: It's just unbelievable.
- 51:55Speaker 6: There going hal to Ola, it was really impressive.
- 51:58Speaker 8: There won't be a fish left in the Wow.
- 52:00Speaker 10: Banjo Meadows, unique patent pending rubber made guard. Let's every

- 52:25Speaker 10: ninety five or faster service. Have your credit card ready
- 52:28Speaker 10: and call.
- 52:29Speaker 8: The number of day count for inflation is phenomenal.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Now you're probably wondering who on earth would fall for
- 52:36Speaker 1: such ridiculous marketing. Well me, I would when I was
- 52:39Speaker 1: in middle school. I now present to you to banjo
- 52:42Speaker 1: minnows from my arsenal tackle box, and I can attest
- 52:46Speaker 1: that these have tricked dozens of large mouth in the
- 52:49Speaker 1: forty acre lake near my hometown. Uh Now, the price
- 52:53Speaker 1: that you are guessing today is for a banjo minnow
- 52:57Speaker 1: set in twenty twenty five. That they are still around,
- 53:00Speaker 1: and they offer a one hundred two piece starter kit
- 53:04Speaker 1: sold on banjomino dot com. It comes with twenty four

- 53:13Speaker 1: This is a new swim bait design. I have the og.
- 53:16Speaker 1: These are way more desirable. Look it's got the ribs
- 53:19Speaker 1: and them very thin. The new ones in twenty twenty
- 53:22Speaker 1: five look much different. They don't look anything like a
- 53:24Speaker 1: banjo minnow. Now look at this thing. It's dang, you're
- 53:27Speaker 1: jumping out of my hand. Banjo minnow?
- 53:29Speaker 3: What's what the hole I'm going to buy some of these?
- 53:31Speaker 1: Well, that's where the nose jig goes. I think that's
- 53:34Speaker 1: what they call it. What do they call that thing?
- 53:36Speaker 1: Nose anchor? You put his nose anchor through there, and
- 53:39Speaker 1: then that's got a little piece where you can slide
- 53:42Speaker 1: your hook through, and so your hook isn't even touching
- 53:45Speaker 1: any of the soft plastic.
- 53:46Speaker 3: So same thing.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Today's price, Well, we know that in nineteen ninety four
- 53:52Speaker 1: it was twenty nine to ninety five for a one
- 53:55Speaker 1: hundred and ten piece kit, But you guys are guessing
- 53:58Speaker 1: the price of a one hundred two two piece kit
- 54:01Speaker 1: that banjo minnow is still selling. Wow, Phil, can we
- 54:05Speaker 1: get it? Can we get a just me on the camera?
- 54:06Speaker 2: Here?
- 54:06Speaker 1: Show these things? Look at that action. My goodness, fish
- 54:10Speaker 1: are genetically wired to eat these things. They just can't resist.
- 54:15Speaker 1: The one fella from the infomercial said they should be illegal,
- 54:18Speaker 1: but there's gonna be no fish left in North America.
- 54:21Speaker 1: Here's what I'll do. Whoever wins today's game, I'll give
- 54:23Speaker 1: you one of my banjo minnows, and then I expect
- 54:25Speaker 1: you to catch.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Something on that.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you could probably catch the first fish ever that
- 54:32Speaker 1: bit a banjo minnow in Alaska. You should take one
- 54:34Speaker 1: of these to Alaska. What would you What would you
- 54:38Speaker 1: catch with this quillback? Please? I would be I would
- 54:41Speaker 1: be so pleased if you took one of these to
- 54:43Speaker 1: Alaska and caught something.
- 54:45Speaker 3: If there was silvers, like at the mouth of a creek,
- 54:48Speaker 3: they might eat one of those things, greenling, lot of stuff.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Okay, if you drop that thing down on a shallow hump,
- 54:54Speaker 2: then like fort water, you'll have something instantly.
- 54:58Speaker 3: The problem is it's all so gonna get bit off.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Yes, you might get one fish to bite on this,
- 55:05Speaker 1: and then the lure is just shot. All right, Do
- 55:07Speaker 1: you have your price for the twenty twenty five one
- 55:10Speaker 1: hundred and ten piece kit? YEP, one hundred two piece kit.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Brody saying
- 55:16Speaker 1: thirty nine to ninety five set saying fifty nine ninety five.
- 55:22Speaker 1: The correct answer is fifty nine to ninety nine set
- 55:27Speaker 1: four cents. That's probably the closest we've ever had someone
- 55:32Speaker 1: get to the correct answer. I'm going to buy some
- 55:35Speaker 1: for the prices, right, but I don't think you want
- 55:37Speaker 1: the new ones. Those new ones just like any They
- 55:40Speaker 1: look like any swim bait at bastard.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Little articulating cuts in there.
- 55:44Speaker 1: That's right, I think. So all right, we're onto our
- 55:47Speaker 1: final item for today.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Just really quick.
- 55:49Speaker 8: I want to throw out there that that Keith said
- 55:51Speaker 8: three easy payments of nineteen ninety five, and I think
- 55:54Speaker 8: he's accuracy and creativity. I think he deserves some flowers there.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he's gets your credit ready. They delivered that line
- 56:01Speaker 1: twice in the infomercial. Make sure when you call if
- 56:04Speaker 1: you're gonna get the banjo minow, you have your credit
- 56:07Speaker 1: card in your hand.
- 56:08Speaker 8: They don't have any time to waste.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Art phil third and final item. We are tied one
- 56:13Speaker 1: to one.
- 56:16Speaker 8: Our final item up for bid today is a whole
- 56:18Speaker 8: salmon from Seattle's world famous Pike Place Fish Market Cheese,
- 56:22Speaker 8: known for their flying fish, they'll actually fly one right
- 56:25Speaker 8: to your front door. Oh, This twelve pound wildcot chinook
- 56:28Speaker 8: comes fresh out of the Pacific Ocean and it's Pike
- 56:30Speaker 8: Place's number one seller. You can choose to have it
- 56:32Speaker 8: sent hole with the head and fins attached, or have
- 56:35Speaker 8: their expert fishmongers turn it into filets and steaks for you.
- 56:38Speaker 1: That's right, Phil, And they guarantee that if we ordered
- 56:42Speaker 1: before noon today, it will arrive on Friday. All right,
- 56:45Speaker 1: Seth and Brady twelve pounds, Phil, twelve pounds. What does
- 56:48Speaker 1: it cost to get a whole king salmon? Ships seven
- 56:51Speaker 1: hundred miles to meat eater HQ, So you're guessing the
- 56:55Speaker 1: price of the fish as well as what it costs
- 56:58Speaker 1: to ship it. Here a twelve pound king salmon from
- 57:03Speaker 1: the Pipe Place fish market. This will determine who gets
- 57:08Speaker 1: the banjo minnow between at all.
- 57:12Speaker 2: I never buy fish from a store, so I don't
- 57:15Speaker 2: even have a clue.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Phil. Have you ever bought anything from Pipe Place?
- 57:19Speaker 8: I have not, No whenever. I've only gone there a
- 57:21Speaker 8: couple of times, and I just try to get get
- 57:24Speaker 8: just walk through as fast as possible, don't make eye contacts,
- 57:27Speaker 8: keep moving.
- 57:27Speaker 1: I like the busyness of it. That's like why I
- 57:29Speaker 1: would want to be there, is to like feel the
- 57:31Speaker 1: hustle and bustle of Pipe Place.
- 57:34Speaker 3: Now, Phil, does it say? Uh? No, I probably won't.
- 57:40Speaker 2: What are you looking for?
- 57:41Speaker 3: Wilder Hatchery?
- 57:43Speaker 1: It says wild wild cot. They are adamant it is
- 57:45Speaker 1: wildcot comes out of the Pacific.
- 57:47Speaker 3: Well, there's like wild kings, and then there's the ones
- 57:50Speaker 3: they raise up for a little whileties and cut them loose.
- 57:53Speaker 1: They say wild cought. They don't say anything about where
- 57:56Speaker 1: it was raised at though. So again, it's a twelve
- 57:58Speaker 1: pound salmon ship seven miles.
- 58:01Speaker 3: I'm just like that in Alaska. The kids got them.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Well, we're gonna find out what they're worth.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Oh, I was ready.
- 58:06Speaker 3: I have a pretty good idea.
- 58:08Speaker 1: Are you ready?
- 58:08Speaker 3: As my kid figured it out.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Sure, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Brody
- 58:13Speaker 1: saying four hundred and twenty dollars, our Seth saying one
- 58:18Speaker 1: hundred forty five dollars. The correct answer is five hundred
- 58:23Speaker 1: two dollars. That's four hundred and thirty two dollars for
- 58:27Speaker 1: the fish and seventy dollars for shipping. That comes out
- 58:30Speaker 1: to a whopping forty two dollars per pound.
- 58:34Speaker 2: Geez.
- 58:35Speaker 1: That's why I thought them salmon. They ain't cheap.
- 58:38Speaker 3: Well, the kings, because they got the highest they're like
- 58:41Speaker 3: highest fat content. It wouldn't be that much for a silver.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Well done, Brody only eighty dollars off. The correct answer
- 58:49Speaker 1: again five hundred two dollars. How the chat do feel?
- 58:52Speaker 2: Chat Way?
- 58:53Speaker 8: I mean most of them were in like the fifty
- 58:55Speaker 8: dollars range on average. We had Mike at the near
- 58:58Speaker 8: the end coming with four to twenty, just like just
- 59:00Speaker 8: like Brody did.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Thanks for playing along, and remember to help control the
- 59:03Speaker 1: pet population. Have your pets spade and neutered and you
- 59:07Speaker 1: might just win yourself a banjo Minnow. All right, that
- 59:10Speaker 1: brings us to the end of this week's show, Phil,
- 59:12Speaker 1: Let's get some final feedback from the chat.
- 59:14Speaker 8: Yeah, last call for questions, Greg says Brody, what hat
- 59:17Speaker 8: are you wearing?
- 59:19Speaker 3: A magpool?
- 59:21Speaker 8: Perfect? David asks any waltenned recommendations for a December hunt
- 59:27Speaker 8: in Pennsylvania Montana canvas?
- 59:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Montana canvas yep.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Cool.
- 59:36Speaker 8: Back to we were doing gear talk, Spicy Nacha sent
- 59:38Speaker 8: in this, Now, what are y'all thoughts on the non
- 59:41Speaker 8: cameo pants. He's always been a full camo guy and
- 59:43Speaker 8: was wondering if you've ever had any issues being half
- 59:45Speaker 8: a blob if.
- 59:46Speaker 1: You're sitting in a tree stand and trying to kill
- 59:49Speaker 1: a white tail buck at eleven yards, I'd probably be
- 59:52Speaker 1: wearing camel pants. If you are trying to kill a
- 59:55Speaker 1: very smart turkey at fifteen yards, probably wear camel pants. Besides,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: is that it's not going to be the thing that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Camo raiders or Camo pants like. I'm gonna disagree slightly
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: with Spencer on on at least the turkey thing. I've
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: killed plenty of turkeys wearing solid tan or solid green pants.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: If you're if you're still it's I don't think it's
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: as big of a deal as long as you got
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Camo uppers and you're just snug down to the ground tight.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Yeah. I I've killed a lot of Merriams in solid pants.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: If I was hunting Easterns back in Pennsylvania somewhere where
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: they're real pressure, that would go full Camo for sure.
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: Randall says, Shout out Phil, Shout out Radio Life crew man.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Randall likes this show so much we have to kick
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: him out of the studio before we turn on the microphones.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: He he was in here right up until the countdown
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: clock started.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: The studio is basically Randall's office.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: Lately, Dalton got the King Ranch hunt right on the money,
- 1:01:02Speaker 8: and has commented several times about how he's mad at
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: me because I accused him of cheating.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Do we trust him?
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: Not at all?
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: No?
- 1:01:09Speaker 8: Oh no, sorry, he needs to come here by by
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: a ticket to Bozeman and present your case in person,
- 1:01:14Speaker 8: and maybe I will hear it. He might do that,
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: Phil I say that, Oh yeah, no, just shoot me
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: Instagram deum.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: This is another one of those general questions that usually
- 1:01:28Speaker 8: don't play very well because it's sort of like, I'm
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: going to Colorado to hunt any tips, but you know,
- 1:01:32Speaker 8: he's got some other stuff that's deep in here. Max says,
- 1:01:36Speaker 8: I'm at a seur hour seven of his eighteen hour
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: drive to Utah for a mewly archery hunt any tips
- 1:01:43Speaker 8: or suggestions for success? But he follows that up with
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: are there any previous media or podcasts that focus on
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: newly hunting to add my binge list? I wish I
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: could pull up some podcast episodes from the recesses of
- 1:01:54Speaker 8: my brain, but I'm sure there are some of you
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: search in whatever platform that you use for podcasting.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Yeah, go check out what was formerly Cutting the Distance.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Remy Warren used to host that show, and I'm sure
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: he had all sorts of good mule deer tips and
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: tricks than Jason Phelps and Dirk. I'm sure they have
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: some good muley tips as well. And that is now
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: the in Pursuit channel with Rich Fronning. What do you got, Brody?
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: Oh, I was just gonna say you probably within the
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: like the general other than cutting the distance, like, probably
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: not a lot of archery mule deer stuff that I
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: can remember. Can you think of anything? So if you
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: want to watch Steve and Joe Rogan archery Hunt mule Deer,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: there's a good episode on that, but I can't think
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: of anything.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: That's one thing I've never really done hunt mule deer
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: with the bow. I've done it a couple of times
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: in Montana.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: It'd be fun up above tree line up real high
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: this time.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be a wicked fun hunt.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Do a couple more.
- 1:02:55Speaker 8: Phil Devin says, Hey, what cartridge are you guys using
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: this upcoming season. It's a pretty big question. Kind of
- 1:03:03Speaker 8: depends on what you're going at.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Seven millimere prc same.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: That is probably what I will do eighty percent of
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: my hunting with this year. And I have a gun
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: tag in Illinois where for the first time I will
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: be using a straight walk cartridge, and I think it'll
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: be a three fifty legend. Still deciding, Sweet Brody.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: It depends on the hunt. I'll be using a six' FIVE,
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: prc which is a great, one then maybe shooting a
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: six y five Creed more a little bit that my
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: kids will be. Using BUT i might use that gun
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Too one, More.
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: Phil nate, says When steve shows up in the, office
- 1:03:41Speaker 8: does work grind to a halt or is that the
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: only time anything gets? DONE i could see him producing either.
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: Outcome i'd say it depends on whether or not he
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: breaks the harpoon.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Out, Yeah seth is the only one on the same
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: floor as, HIM i Guess phil as. Well do you
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: notice When steve's?
- 1:03:55Speaker 8: AROUND i personally have no idea what he's hearing when
- 1:03:58Speaker 8: he's not.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: Here When, Steve i'll give him. Credit When steve's, here
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: he's like here for a, reason and he's working.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: On something that's. TRUE i. KNOW i like to try
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: to sneak into his office and like bug him about,
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: stuff like just talking about anything other than, work and
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: he's usually, like what do you? Need LIKE i just
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: want to talk fishing or.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Something All, RIGHT a few plugs before we get out of.
