- 0:20It took a minute,
- 0:21now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:22When they get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:24you decide to stay.
- 0:26That's how a winner's made.
- 0:27Stick a fork in the hater on
- 0:28my dinner plate.
- 0:35What is going on, everybody?
- 0:36Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast,
- 0:39where we are featuring the
- 0:40athletes of the 2024
- 0:41CrossFit Games Semifinals.
- 0:44I'm so privileged to have with me today,
- 0:46Mariana Rose Bell.
- 0:50How you doing, Mariana?
- 0:52I'm good.
- 0:54So you are at... I now have
- 0:59an echo that we were just talking about,
- 1:01so I might have on my phone...
- 1:04Yeah, so I hear it too.
- 1:05While you kind of do that,
- 1:07we'll work through this.
- 1:12So Marietta is in Iowa.
- 1:13She goes to Kilo 2.
- 1:15And while she flips to her phone,
- 1:19we will just take a second.
- 1:22But super excited to talk to her.
- 1:27We did a test before this to
- 1:29see about the echo and it
- 1:32wasn't there the minute we
- 1:33went live the echo came in
- 1:35so she's hopping on her
- 1:38phone with some headphones.
- 1:48And When that comes in,
- 1:53we will switch her over to that.
- 1:54Alright, so
- 1:59There we go.
- 2:01Now we got to get, so I can't hear you.
- 2:06You're muted.
- 2:06There we go.
- 2:08Now we got to get, so I can't hear you.
- 2:12Okay.
- 2:12How are we now?
- 2:13You're muted.
- 2:14Good.
- 2:15So I can hear your computer.
- 2:16I just turned it off.
- 2:18Oh, but I have the live stream open.
- 2:21Yeah.
- 2:22There we go.
- 2:24There we go.
- 2:24We can do it.
- 2:25I can do this.
- 2:28All right.
- 2:28Now we're rolling.
- 2:30Now we're rolling.
- 2:32So you said that that was your work setup.
- 2:35What do you do to support yourself?
- 2:39Yeah, I'm the technical director,
- 2:42production manager at the
- 2:43Hancher Auditorium,
- 2:44which is like an 1,800-seat theater,
- 2:48plus we have a black box space,
- 2:52plus our whole lobby at the
- 2:53University of Iowa.
- 2:54So we do Broadway shows, we do dance,
- 2:57we do...
- 3:00rock shows, comedians, jazz groups,
- 3:03all kinds of stuff.
- 3:05Are you into the
- 3:06entertainment world or was
- 3:07this just by circumstance?
- 3:10This is like my, I guess, career path.
- 3:15I was a performer way back
- 3:18when and got into the tech aspect of it,
- 3:23got into management aspect
- 3:25of it and kind of just
- 3:27Worked my way from actor, dancer,
- 3:30to stage manager, to company management,
- 3:32to venue management,
- 3:33to production management.
- 3:37And you were a dancer.
- 3:38How much has that helped in
- 3:39your CrossFit world?
- 3:42I want to say it has,
- 3:45but probably not so much.
- 3:46It's given me hypermobile
- 3:47hips and a decent amount of injuries.
- 3:51Okay.
- 3:51Okay.
- 3:52So I think I gathered like
- 3:55the body awareness and a lot of stability,
- 4:00like core stability, ankle,
- 4:02hip stability.
- 4:04But it just contributed, I think,
- 4:08more to my mindset piece,
- 4:09kind of like playing sports does.
- 4:12Okay.
- 4:13Did you play any sports
- 4:14growing up or were you all
- 4:15about the dance?
- 4:16Yeah, no,
- 4:17I danced and I played soccer in
- 4:18college as well.
- 4:20Okay, wow.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:21So I was very, very busy.
- 4:24Did you go to Iowa or another college?
- 4:26No, I went to school in upstate New York,
- 4:29a small school called William Smith.
- 4:31Okay.
- 4:32Yeah.
- 4:32Yeah.
- 4:33There's a lot of
- 4:34CrossFitters from upstate New York.
- 4:36There are.
- 4:37And there are a lot of
- 4:39CrossFitters in Iowa too.
- 4:40I know.
- 4:42Crazy little hotbeds all over the country.
- 4:44Yeah.
- 4:45We've only been here since
- 4:46June of last year.
- 4:48So not even a year yet.
- 4:50And there's a lot of CrossFit out here.
- 4:52There is.
- 4:53Made famous by one Mr. Colton Mertens.
- 4:56You can't discredit the Kilo team, though.
- 5:01They roll deep.
- 5:02They've had Street.
- 5:03You had Luke Schaefer.
- 5:05They had the team every year.
- 5:06Unfortunately,
- 5:07this year we had some logistical issues.
- 5:10So I'm glad you brought the
- 5:11team up because I saw that
- 5:13you competed with them at quarterfinals.
- 5:15I did.
- 5:16Was your intention this season to go team?
- 5:19Not at all.
- 5:20So they had their four.
- 5:24And Deidre Franzen,
- 5:26one of the strongest women in CrossFit,
- 5:29she got really sick.
- 5:31There was like a bug going
- 5:32around the gym that week.
- 5:35And she had the fever, the chills,
- 5:39the whole thing.
- 5:41And was basically like, can you do it?
- 5:45And of course, I mean,
- 5:47anything for the team.
- 5:48And it was a really great opportunity,
- 5:50and I'm glad I was able to
- 5:51step in and help him out.
- 5:52Unfortunately,
- 5:53we had an issue with one of
- 5:56our guys not finishing all
- 5:58of his open workouts at the gym,
- 5:59so we got disqualified.
- 6:01Yeah, that was a shame.
- 6:05I actually did, I think,
- 6:06a little mini riff on
- 6:07whether that should
- 6:08actually be a rule and how
- 6:11hard should you stick to it.
- 6:13Yeah, I mean,
- 6:14it's tough because they've
- 6:17had so many different rules
- 6:19with the teams and how they
- 6:21structure the season.
- 6:22It seems very simple.
- 6:25I think for these guys,
- 6:26they had a different guy
- 6:27than they did because
- 6:28Brandon didn't come back.
- 6:32Brandon didn't come back.
- 6:33And so they had a couple
- 6:35different guys going.
- 6:36They were going to have a
- 6:38different guy that wasn't Colton.
- 6:41But then his wife was pregnant.
- 6:43and she was due, you know,
- 6:45during the games.
- 6:46So they went through a few
- 6:49iterations of who was going
- 6:50to be on the team.
- 6:51And I think that that
- 6:52confusion led to a little bit of it,
- 6:54but it's what it is.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:57So, I mean,
- 6:58I've heard from Colton and Allie,
- 7:00how like amazing the gym is itself,
- 7:02right.
- 7:03That Colton attributes a lot
- 7:05of like where he is today
- 7:07by the base built by Kilo,
- 7:10Kilo two and their training.
- 7:11Um,
- 7:13you just moved there a year ago.
- 7:14Did you CrossFit New York?
- 7:17Uh, no.
- 7:18So I was just in New York
- 7:19when I was in college and
- 7:20then in the city a little bit working.
- 7:22I didn't start doing
- 7:23CrossFit until I moved to Florida.
- 7:24Um, Jacksonville area.
- 7:28So it, was there a difference in the,
- 7:31in the way training went in
- 7:33Florida compared to Kilo?
- 7:36For sure.
- 7:37Um,
- 7:39I think Jacksonville,
- 7:40Florida is a pretty hotbed for fitness.
- 7:44There's a lot of gyms out there.
- 7:46There were a lot of regional
- 7:48athletes out there back in the day.
- 7:50I mean,
- 7:51she had Brooke Haas who was out there,
- 7:53Mark Hutchinson, Colleen Lehane.
- 7:55So a lot of old regionals athletes.
- 7:57So there's a big history of
- 7:58CrossFit in that area.
- 8:01Um, so a lot of experience,
- 8:04a lot of people that I got to learn from,
- 8:05which was cool.
- 8:07Uh,
- 8:08But very just different.
- 8:11I mean,
- 8:11I didn't go to a competitive gym ever.
- 8:15Not to say that Kilo 2 is
- 8:16like all they do is competitive.
- 8:18We've got a fantastic
- 8:20community there of just GPP
- 8:22regular people.
- 8:25But training alongside
- 8:26people that are better than
- 8:27you is always going to make you better.
- 8:32Did you go into the season
- 8:34with the goal of getting to semifinals?
- 8:38Yeah, I think the last,
- 8:43this year included the last three years,
- 8:45that was definitely the goal.
- 8:48But being in the East, as you know,
- 8:52is one slip up,
- 8:55one slip up and you're done.
- 8:56So I think that it was tough.
- 9:00I mean,
- 9:00like I had weaknesses that every
- 9:02year I thought I found them.
- 9:04I thought I did what I needed to do.
- 9:07Every year CrossFit does the
- 9:08magic and they show you
- 9:09something that you still
- 9:10need to get better at.
- 9:11And that's why we love it.
- 9:16But yeah,
- 9:16so this was the last three years.
- 9:19I think I've been really chasing it.
- 9:21I mean, taking into consideration,
- 9:23like I have a full-time job,
- 9:25have a life outside of this,
- 9:27like responsibilities.
- 9:29But this is like a very
- 9:31exciting thing to see it
- 9:32all kind of play out.
- 9:34Yeah,
- 9:34when I look at your worldwide rankings,
- 9:36like in quarterfinals,
- 9:38they kept getting better
- 9:39and better and better.
- 9:41But then you're in that
- 9:43stacked East and sometimes
- 9:46better isn't better enough.
- 9:47Yeah,
- 9:48everyone just keeps... Everyone is...
- 9:50They're so good.
- 9:54The women of the East are...
- 9:58They're so good and they
- 10:00keep getting better.
- 10:02So that's...
- 10:06That's a hard challenge.
- 10:06It's a big mountain to climb.
- 10:08And it kept me pushing to get better.
- 10:10I knew that everyone around
- 10:12me was just improving.
- 10:14And then they let an
- 10:15Australian move into the East.
- 10:18I know.
- 10:19To make it even worse.
- 10:22So you're in the West.
- 10:24Yes.
- 10:25So this year,
- 10:26and you finished
- 10:27quarterfinals in 42nd place.
- 10:30That is a very tenuous spot to be in.
- 10:33because there's penalties
- 10:35there's people going team
- 10:37there's and you kind of
- 10:39have to wait for all that
- 10:40to flush out at 42 um how
- 10:43nerve-wracking was that um
- 10:47I think it was and it
- 10:48wasn't like I got my so the
- 10:52the real stress was that I
- 10:55actually submitted my score
- 10:56wrong for workout four
- 10:59So I was one of the many who
- 11:01said I did 28 reps instead of 58.
- 11:05So that was the first issue
- 11:07was that my score was wrong
- 11:09and is CrossFit going to fix it?
- 11:11So that was the first panic.
- 11:13I wasn't really concerned
- 11:14about anything else.
- 11:15I was just like, well,
- 11:16I wanted to reflect the work I did,
- 11:18not a mistake I made.
- 11:21So they got that fixed, which was great.
- 11:24And then I got my workouts reviewed.
- 11:26I had penalties assessed and everything.
- 11:28And then
- 11:30It's kind of just waiting.
- 11:32I mean, we had an idea that, you know,
- 11:34Andrea Nessler was going to go masters,
- 11:38uh, Rachel green,
- 11:39who is also from the Iowa area.
- 11:42And some people at the gym know her,
- 11:44she was going to do masters.
- 11:45So we were like, okay, well,
- 11:47maybe do we train?
- 11:49Do we not?
- 11:50What do we do?
- 11:52Uh, and so, yeah, you just like, wait,
- 11:56I think there was a lot of peace.
- 11:57Like I did what I could with
- 12:00what I had this year.
- 12:01Um, and it was going to be what it was.
- 12:06And if I got the opportunity to go,
- 12:08then this is the first time
- 12:11I get to experience that.
- 12:12And I'll be really excited
- 12:13and I'll do my best no
- 12:14matter what I have to bring.
- 12:17It's funny you kind of talk about it.
- 12:19I heard of another athlete
- 12:20in the East who was in the same situation,
- 12:23went out and thought her season was over.
- 12:26So he did the pizza, did the burgers,
- 12:30did the wine, did the whole bit,
- 12:32and then got the email that said, hey,
- 12:34you're in.
- 12:35And all of a sudden she had
- 12:37to get back into training.
- 12:39And the first couple of days
- 12:40back were rough because of
- 12:42what she had kind of celebrated with.
- 12:44Yeah, I think fortunately for me,
- 12:48my schedule is pretty
- 12:49routine in the sense that it's chaos.
- 12:51So I had a lot of things to
- 12:53distract me that following week.
- 12:55I was super busy with work.
- 12:56We had a lot of events here.
- 12:57I had a Broadway show.
- 13:01You know, we had a bunch of graduations.
- 13:02So I didn't really have too
- 13:04much time to sit and dwell.
- 13:06I had to go do my job.
- 13:10So that.
- 13:11Yeah.
- 13:12Did you hit the gym still that week?
- 13:14Like normal?
- 13:15No, I took, I think I went in twice.
- 13:19I went in like Wednesday and
- 13:20did class and it was
- 13:21partner workout and I got
- 13:23whooped by my partner.
- 13:24And then I think I did
- 13:29another like bike burpee piece,
- 13:33maybe Friday or Saturday.
- 13:34And I was like, that's good.
- 13:37So did,
- 13:38did you get the email from CrossFit
- 13:40that you'd qualified after
- 13:43the leaderboard had closed?
- 13:44Yeah,
- 13:45I got it on the day following the
- 13:52first round of submissions.
- 13:55So I think that would have
- 13:56been the Saturday.
- 14:00Okay.
- 14:02Wow.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:03I mean, I was like,
- 14:04I was on my way to work.
- 14:05I decided to stop and get
- 14:06coffee because treat yourself.
- 14:09And I opened my phone while
- 14:11I was waiting and I got the
- 14:13email and sent the
- 14:15screenshot to my fiance,
- 14:17gave them my money.
- 14:18I was like, okay, here we go.
- 14:22We're going to time to train hard.
- 14:26So looking at your numbers,
- 14:30you haven't been in this sport very long.
- 14:32Yeah.
- 14:35Are you aware of the lore
- 14:37and the iconicness of Carson?
- 14:40Oh, yeah.
- 14:41So I have a very vivid
- 14:43memory of watching ESPN and
- 14:48seeing Annie Thor's
- 14:49daughter running into the
- 14:51tennis stadium or maybe it
- 14:51was a soccer stadium.
- 14:55One of the years that they
- 14:57did Murph and it was on ESPN.
- 15:00Yeah.
- 15:01Yeah.
- 15:02And that's,
- 15:03I didn't know what CrossFit was
- 15:04at the time, like many people.
- 15:06And I saw this and I was like, well,
- 15:08that's so cool.
- 15:11And it wasn't until 2018
- 15:12that I went and did CrossFit.
- 15:16You know, so I knew what it was.
- 15:20I was in the, like, I trained,
- 15:22I was playing sports.
- 15:25And then I didn't really get
- 15:26into it until I moved to a
- 15:27new place and I needed to meet people.
- 15:31So the gym I originally
- 15:32joined was doing like a
- 15:33six-week challenge.
- 15:36And I was like, well,
- 15:36I don't know anybody.
- 15:37I just moved to Florida.
- 15:39I'll go do this.
- 15:42And the coaches at the gym,
- 15:45after the six-week challenge,
- 15:47a lot of people left.
- 15:49And they were like, you're going to stay,
- 15:50right?
- 15:50And I'm like, I guess.
- 15:53I don't really have anything else to do.
- 15:55They're like, you should stay.
- 15:57You should stay here and train with us.
- 16:00And
- 16:01yeah,
- 16:01those guys invested a lot into me and
- 16:03I really am super grateful for it.
- 16:07So,
- 16:08so you're going to Carson and I've
- 16:10talked to a lot of athletes
- 16:11this week who are really
- 16:14kind of worried about that
- 16:14first event because the,
- 16:18the energy they're going to
- 16:19feel the adrenaline,
- 16:20like they keep saying
- 16:22they're going to have to
- 16:23grab the reins and try not to blow up.
- 16:27Oh,
- 16:28those people must run five minute miles.
- 16:31Yeah, I don't know, but the one guy said,
- 16:34I'm probably going to –
- 16:36being in the tennis stadium,
- 16:37going out on a run,
- 16:38I'm going to blow up if I'm not careful.
- 16:42Yeah, I think – so fortunately,
- 16:46another member of our gym,
- 16:47one of the members of the Kilo 2 team,
- 16:50is also going.
- 16:51So Austin Nadelkov.
- 16:54Okay.
- 16:54So this has been a super
- 16:56cool time because something
- 16:58brand new to me, and I have a veteran –
- 17:01just hanging out.
- 17:03He has, I mean,
- 17:05this wasn't his plan for
- 17:06the season and he's making
- 17:09the best of it and he's
- 17:10going to go send it,
- 17:11but he's competed at Carson, you know,
- 17:14he's competed in Madison.
- 17:15He's been to the games.
- 17:16He's been to regionals and
- 17:19he's got a lot in his brain
- 17:22and he's like super willing
- 17:23to share it and make sure that, you know,
- 17:26he knows this is a first for me.
- 17:28And he's like, remember, you know,
- 17:31do what you can do.
- 17:31Like this isn't your race or, Oh,
- 17:33this one is your race.
- 17:35Reminding me that like,
- 17:36I have my strengths,
- 17:37I have my weaknesses and to
- 17:39play on those and a workout like this.
- 17:42I'm not a gazelle.
- 17:44I'm going to run my best,
- 17:45but I'm not a runner.
- 17:47So know where I can make up
- 17:50time and move efficiently
- 17:52and know what I do,
- 17:54what I need to do to do my best.
- 17:58Would you consider... So
- 18:00tell me what kind of an athlete you are.
- 18:05So I definitely used to be a strong guy.
- 18:07Not that I'm not anymore.
- 18:09I just... I think about four years ago,
- 18:11I kind of decided that if I
- 18:14kept doing what I was doing,
- 18:16which was lifting a lot and
- 18:18being really strong,
- 18:19that I wasn't going to be
- 18:21better at burpees.
- 18:23So I...
- 18:26told my I spent a lot of
- 18:27time running I spent a lot
- 18:28of time on machines doing
- 18:30cyclical work um and doing
- 18:33things I wasn't good at and
- 18:35I let the things like
- 18:37strength work one rep maxes
- 18:39high power output kind of
- 18:41go to the wayside and so I
- 18:43could focus on the things I
- 18:44wasn't good at to bring
- 18:46those up and it doesn't
- 18:48always show you know like
- 18:50your hard work won't always
- 18:52show to other people but
- 18:54A great example of that is
- 18:55like the wall ball burpee
- 18:57box jump over workout from quarterfinals.
- 19:00So, I mean,
- 19:02I don't even know if I'm
- 19:03finishing that last year.
- 19:05I'm definitely not finishing
- 19:06it two years ago.
- 19:08So it's like you see that all pay off.
- 19:12Whereas the clean and jerk ladder,
- 19:14I think I was lifting once a week,
- 19:17like this season, up until training for,
- 19:20you know, semifinals last.
- 19:22I was touching a barbell
- 19:23maybe once a week to back
- 19:24squat or front squat and
- 19:25once a week to Olympic lift
- 19:27and calling it good.
- 19:29So while that might not be
- 19:31my personal like best in that threshold,
- 19:35like in that workout,
- 19:36like for what it is walking around,
- 19:37I'm super happy of how I
- 19:39was able to execute it
- 19:41having done it twice.
- 19:42So when you go into semis
- 19:46and you have a snatch
- 19:47ladder and you have other
- 19:50stuff that's more
- 19:54balanced are you more
- 19:56looking forward to the
- 19:57balance to see where you're
- 19:58at or is it fun to like get
- 20:01your hands on that snatch
- 20:02one more time I'm I think
- 20:05I'm excited for both I
- 20:07think I'm really excited to
- 20:08see like the run that's two
- 20:11and a half miles of running
- 20:12with 50 clean and jerks
- 20:14that I'm I'm really excited
- 20:16to see how I can do in
- 20:18something like that knowing that you know
- 20:22two years ago, a year ago,
- 20:23I'm getting capped no matter what.
- 20:29And then the snatch ladder, it's battery.
- 20:33So like I practiced it a
- 20:36couple of times in a couple
- 20:37of different variations.
- 20:39And I think it'll be fun.
- 20:40Like lifting's fun.
- 20:42Lifting heavy is super fun.
- 20:44I would much prefer the
- 20:45ladder as opposed to like a one rep max.
- 20:49Um,
- 20:50so that I think it'll all be super fun.
- 20:54Um,
- 20:55there's obviously stuff that I'm not so
- 20:58thrilled about, but we all have those.
- 21:01I think I would love to see
- 21:04some GHDs always,
- 21:05but here we are and we'll
- 21:08get to climb a rope instead.
- 21:12So you, um, even all the work and getting
- 21:17and not working on the barbell,
- 21:19it's still kind of your favorite.
- 21:22Yeah, I think my favorite, well, I love,
- 21:24I do love like some grunt work,
- 21:26kettlebells, odd objects, stuff.
- 21:29I love to push a sled, um,
- 21:32external loading barbell.
- 21:35Barbell is just the most accessible,
- 21:37right?
- 21:37So everyone can get on a barbell,
- 21:39which is why we love it.
- 21:40Um, I love a good pull from the floor,
- 21:44whatever we're doing,
- 21:44as long as we're pulling from the floor,
- 21:46I'm on board.
- 21:49So what is your realistic
- 21:51goal this season?
- 21:52I mean, I think I, so if we're being real,
- 21:58like honest, I've achieved my goal.
- 22:01Like my goal this season was
- 22:02to qualify for semifinals and I did it.
- 22:06So now like setting that marker ahead,
- 22:11I think we're looking at
- 22:14like just the best
- 22:15execution that I can have
- 22:16doing the best I can do.
- 22:18And,
- 22:20Not getting injured.
- 22:21I think that's a big component of it.
- 22:24I don't want to leave the
- 22:25weekend next weekend with
- 22:27something massive that I
- 22:28could have avoided.
- 22:31But I do want to do my best.
- 22:32I'm going to go out there.
- 22:33I'm going to go out swinging
- 22:35and give it what I have.
- 22:36But I want to be smart
- 22:38because I have a fairly
- 22:40physically demanding job
- 22:42and I don't really want to
- 22:45jeopardize that.
- 22:47Yeah.
- 22:48But isn't it hard to go into an event?
- 22:51You don't want to think about injury,
- 22:52right?
- 22:53Right.
- 22:53Or it, it holds you back.
- 22:56Yeah.
- 22:57Yeah.
- 22:57I think that's super, that's true.
- 23:00But I, as we get older and I mean, I'm,
- 23:03I'm not a super spring chicken anymore.
- 23:06So, you know,
- 23:07your body and even though you
- 23:09are competing and you're
- 23:10not worried about that, um,
- 23:14you're not reckless, right?
- 23:17And so, you know,
- 23:20if you're going to do
- 23:21something to jeopardize
- 23:22your wellbeing and then
- 23:24you've made the choice to
- 23:25either pay attention to
- 23:27that or to disregard it.
- 23:30Yeah.
- 23:30It, it's really a yin and yang.
- 23:32I'm like just trying to think about it.
- 23:34When I was younger,
- 23:35like I would throw my body into anything.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:38Right.
- 23:38Like, and damn the consequences.
- 23:41I'm just going all out to whatever.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:44Yeah.
- 23:45And then as you get older,
- 23:46like you become smarter
- 23:47with those things.
- 23:48Like, man,
- 23:49I could do this or I'm going to
- 23:51be hurt tomorrow.
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:53I think so.
- 23:55I talk about this with my
- 23:56fiance a lot because I
- 23:57never climbed a tree until
- 23:59I was an adult.
- 24:01Okay.
- 24:02Because when I was,
- 24:03I was dancing and I was playing sports,
- 24:05I was playing soccer when I
- 24:06was younger and we were specifically told,
- 24:09you know,
- 24:09no outside dangerous activities allowed.
- 24:13if they get hurt outside of
- 24:16the sport or outside of this thing,
- 24:18that's a problem.
- 24:20So when I was younger,
- 24:22it was very safe play, you know,
- 24:25for better or worse,
- 24:27I didn't do a lot of
- 24:28reckless stuff so that
- 24:30that's like a behavior
- 24:32that's been ingrained in me almost.
- 24:35Yeah.
- 24:36I get that.
- 24:36Cause I was a swimmer
- 24:37growing up and my coach was like,
- 24:39you know, no skiing in the winter time,
- 24:41no, no riding mini bikes, no, you know,
- 24:47but I was a kid who just
- 24:49loved adventure and yeah,
- 24:53I never went skiing.
- 24:54I never did that.
- 24:56Um,
- 24:57and I didn't really ride mini bikes or
- 24:58anything, but I, I had fun and I,
- 25:01I jumped off stuff.
- 25:02I climbed things I did.
- 25:05what a kid could do.
- 25:06And I'm glad I did.
- 25:09I'm glad I had that.
- 25:12But I,
- 25:13but I know that there's those
- 25:14moments when,
- 25:15when you're in an event and
- 25:16you're in a competition and like,
- 25:18you have to make the choice.
- 25:19Do I,
- 25:20do I go that one more gear knowing
- 25:23it's going to hurt or do I back it off?
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:27I think these are, for me,
- 25:28they're very specific instances.
- 25:30Like I've had a,
- 25:32a reoccurring shoulder thing,
- 25:34like most people have, uh,
- 25:36and it's specifically
- 25:37triggered by a very few movements.
- 25:40One of them happens to be
- 25:41legless rope climbs.
- 25:43So I know that when I've hit my threshold,
- 25:48I have to be conscious of
- 25:50what that looks like.
- 25:51Right.
- 25:52Especially because it's
- 25:53early on in the weekend.
- 25:56And that's just taking them.
- 25:57I mean, I'm a realist, right?
- 26:00I'm here to do my best and
- 26:02put my best effort forward,
- 26:03but that's not my workout to win.
- 26:06And I'm, I know that.
- 26:09So that's my workout where
- 26:10I've got to go out there
- 26:11and I've got to get it.
- 26:11I've got to execute for me
- 26:13and I've got to do the best
- 26:14that I can do.
- 26:16And then that's what it is.
- 26:19I mean,
- 26:19I can't wait to watch some of these
- 26:21girls like Alex Kazam on that workout.
- 26:26She's,
- 26:27she's coming out hot and she's going
- 26:28to absolutely smash it.
- 26:31And that's amazing,
- 26:32but I'm not going to try to
- 26:34replicate what she's doing.
- 26:36Yeah.
- 26:38Yeah.
- 26:38She's the best in the world at,
- 26:39at Legolas.
- 26:40So like that's someone you
- 26:43would definitely want the
- 26:43blinders on unless you're,
- 26:46you're done and on the sidelines.
- 26:47I'm done.
- 26:48I'm on the sidelines.
- 26:49I want to cheer for her.
- 26:50I want her to absolutely set
- 26:52a record on that workout.
- 26:56Jeffrey Birchfield asks,
- 26:57so it's cross for your job,
- 26:59or do you do something else?
- 27:00Right off the top,
- 27:02we talked about that she is
- 27:05a theater production manager.
- 27:07Is that correct?
- 27:10Yeah, I'm the production manager,
- 27:11technical director, so I wear many hats.
- 27:14We've got a full-time team, but
- 27:16theaters we work with a
- 27:18local union of stagehands
- 27:19we've also got students
- 27:20that work here and we've
- 27:22got a couple full-time
- 27:22staff but there's a lot
- 27:24that goes on between like
- 27:26the rigging hanging lights
- 27:27pulling points um pushing a
- 27:31lot of carts so a lot of
- 27:34what I do in training I
- 27:35actually do a lot at work
- 27:38just in a different
- 27:38capacity uh taylor blanco
- 27:42had your back yeah that's my guy
- 27:48so so with with what you're
- 27:53doing like is this a
- 27:56learning year for you and
- 27:58then you have a bigger goal
- 27:59next year or will you
- 28:03always want to compete in
- 28:04this sport because you have
- 28:05that option with age group
- 28:07and masters and all of that
- 28:09where are you headed with
- 28:11this after this year I
- 28:14don't really know um
- 28:16I think this was a big year
- 28:19for me in terms of life, right?
- 28:22I moved across the country.
- 28:23I started a new job,
- 28:25started training in a new gym.
- 28:29And then I was in a new conference, right?
- 28:32I moved from the East to the West.
- 28:34Right.
- 28:34So with all of those variables,
- 28:35I kind of knew I was like, well,
- 28:38I should still give it a crack.
- 28:39Like I was, I mean, life's hard.
- 28:41You're working, you're tired.
- 28:42You're like, I still love CrossFit,
- 28:44but do I want to put in
- 28:46the work that I need to put
- 28:47in to do this competitively.
- 28:49And I was like, well, I got to, right?
- 28:55You go from the East to the West,
- 28:56not to knock anything,
- 28:58but I knew what my scores
- 29:00were last year and the year before.
- 29:02So I knew it was worth a
- 29:04shot and the effort.
- 29:05I think we'll take some time
- 29:10after the season's over.
- 29:11Our work busy season actually
- 29:15calms down a little bit and
- 29:19just enjoy a little bit of
- 29:20an off season and decide.
- 29:23I wouldn't be surprised if I try again.
- 29:25I mean, it is a learning year.
- 29:27This is the biggest stage
- 29:28I've ever made it to.
- 29:29I mean,
- 29:30as long as we're not counting like
- 29:31water Palooza.
- 29:32So it's a, it's a opportunity to learn.
- 29:36And I,
- 29:37I do think that I'll probably want
- 29:39to try again and go for it
- 29:40and see if I can qualify
- 29:42without needing a backfill.
- 29:44Um,
- 29:46But yeah, that's my,
- 29:47that's my thoughts there.
- 29:49Yeah.
- 29:49What a Palooza may be bigger
- 29:51in area and it may be bigger with fans,
- 29:55but I don't think there is
- 29:56a bigger stage than where
- 29:56you're going to be.
- 29:57Right.
- 29:58The iconic tennis stadium,
- 30:00what it means at this point in the season,
- 30:02that's a pretty big deal
- 30:03and you should be
- 30:04celebrated for making it to that level.
- 30:07Yeah.
- 30:07So like we said, big learning,
- 30:11definitely have
- 30:12accomplished the goal I set out to.
- 30:14So yeah,
- 30:15I mean, we're all competitors.
- 30:16I probably won't be able to say no.
- 30:20Yeah.
- 30:22Yeah.
- 30:24Jeffrey Birchfield said, okay, cool.
- 30:26I used to do community
- 30:27theater as an actor.
- 30:28Nice.
- 30:29And he also used to do some
- 30:31help with set building.
- 30:33That's the real magic behind it.
- 30:36Yeah.
- 30:38Well,
- 30:39it has been such a treat getting to
- 30:41know you today.
- 30:43We want to wish you luck in Carson.
- 30:46Uh, it, everybody in the chat,

- 31:04Thank you so much for being
