- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the UConn football coaches show. We're back, uh,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Saturday at home to take on Maryland. The network pregame
- 0:06Speaker 1: starts at two o'clock and, uh, we'll be on the
- 0:09Speaker 1: scene well before that, uh, to get you going for
- 0:13Speaker 1: UConn football.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It gets real.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Now we're with Jason candle, Maryland comes in out of
- 0:19Speaker 1: the big 10 and they face a very tough schedule.
- 0:21Speaker 1: The last couple of years, they've had some troubles, uh,
- 0:24Speaker 1: going four and eight, both years. Um, Coach, when you
- 0:28Speaker 1: prepare for this, any preparation for any team, but especially
- 0:31Speaker 1: a team coming in that is probably playing with even
- 0:35Speaker 1: more urgency as they get the Big Ten schedule ahead
- 0:38Speaker 1: of them, does it start on Sunday? Does it start
- 0:42Speaker 1: on Monday? When does it start for you and the team?
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well, the minute you leave the locker room from the
- 0:50Speaker 3: previous one. But, yeah, I mean, look, there's– really hard
- 0:58Speaker 3: days and there's really hard preparation that goes into each
- 1:00Speaker 3: one of these.
- 1:00Speaker 2: There's only 12 of them, but you're guaranteed.
- 1:02Speaker 3: And, you know, you, you can't, you're foolish not to
- 1:05Speaker 3: take a minute and, and be, you know, have the
- 1:09Speaker 3: gratification of a little bit of celebration of a win.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Like that's, they're hard to get and you shouldn't be
- 1:14Speaker 3: apologetic to whoever you play or where you play them.
- 1:16Speaker 3: It does not matter. It's division one football. There's, there's,
- 1:19Speaker 3: there's quote unquote, lower level teams beating guys all over
- 1:22Speaker 3: the country each and every week. So, uh, you're lucky
- 1:25Speaker 3: and fortunate enough to get a win. You know, you
- 1:27Speaker 3: should celebrate that, but you got to really turn the
- 1:29Speaker 3: page and flip it pretty fast. And you got to
- 1:31Speaker 3: get the players as much accurate information as soon as
- 1:33Speaker 3: you possibly can. And that work starts on Sunday. I mean,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you got to, you got to come in here in
- 1:38Speaker 3: the morning on Sunday and, and, and really dig into
- 1:41Speaker 3: it and put the guys together a really good plan
- 1:44Speaker 3: and start to segment and how you're going to give
- 1:46Speaker 3: that to them throughout the course of the week. So
- 1:49Speaker 3: there's great retention. And more importantly, there's great application of
- 1:52Speaker 3: that plan when it comes to Saturday. So, it's a
- 1:55Speaker 3: process that builds through the week, but man, oh man,
- 1:57Speaker 3: it doesn't take long after a game to get jumped
- 1:59Speaker 3: into the, you know, to jump into the next one.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Case in point, by the way, UMass going to Rutgers,
- 2:05Speaker 1: 28 point underdog winning by double digits. I mean, where'd
- 2:10Speaker 1: that come from? I mean, that's the kind of thing
- 2:12Speaker 1: that gets your attention.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I mean, you know, Max Warner, the offensive coordinator there
- 2:17Speaker 3: worked for me last year at Toledo. So I, I mean,
- 2:20Speaker 3: I know what he's capable of doing and, um, You know,
- 2:23Speaker 3: he's got that quarterback playing at a high level.
- 2:25Speaker 2: That was a great win for those guys. But you're right.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I mean, you know, where does it come from?
- 2:30Speaker 3: It comes from a team that, you know, on paper
- 2:32Speaker 3: is more talented, that overlooks their.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Opponent and doesn't put time and energy into the right things.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So they make fundamental errors. They don't catch punts. They
- 2:42Speaker 3: roll out to the one-yard line. They don't, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 3: tackle well in space, as you mentioned. Just the things
- 2:46Speaker 3: that show up in week one, you catch a couple breaks.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Anybody can beat anybody on any given Saturday.
- 2:52Speaker 1: That is true. I think someone else said that. I
- 2:54Speaker 1: don't remember who it was, but thanks for that quote.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That's a good one. Anybody can beat anybody, any day.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You mentioned punts, punt returns.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Julian Allen, wow, that guy's gutsy. He caught the ball
- 3:06Speaker 1: in traffic a couple of times. He had a great
- 3:08Speaker 1: 49-yard return. He seems like a guy you can really
- 3:13Speaker 1: trust back there, and that's kind of what you need,
- 3:15Speaker 1: isn't it, as a punt returner?
- 3:17Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think the number one thing is
- 3:19Speaker 3: to possess the footballing. they don't want to make mistakes
- 3:21Speaker 3: in that phase of the game. It's hard to get
- 3:23Speaker 3: the other team off the field. And when you do it,
- 3:25Speaker 3: to be able to give it right back to them is,
- 3:28Speaker 3: you know, it's, it's deflating, right. And, you know, say
- 3:31Speaker 3: what you want, but today more than ever in college sports,
- 3:35Speaker 3: momentum is such a big thing, you know, and you
- 3:38Speaker 3: want to be able to, like I said, possess the ball,
- 3:42Speaker 3: make sure that they're, your offense is walking onto the
- 3:45Speaker 3: field and the defense is walking, the other team's defense
- 3:48Speaker 3: is walking out there too.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So, Not the other team's offense. So, yeah, you got
- 3:52Speaker 2: to catch it. You got to possess it.
- 3:53Speaker 3: You want to take away and win those hidden yardage,
- 3:55Speaker 3: you know, plays by, you know, securing the ball. And
- 3:58Speaker 3: I thought he did a really good job of that.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I mean, he's really comfortable back there. He's, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 3: he's going to make a lot of plays on offense
- 4:04Speaker 3: this year, too. So, but I'm glad he did a
- 4:07Speaker 3: great job with that part of a Saturday and really gained,
- 4:09Speaker 3: you know, some valuable, you know, reps to build off
- 4:13Speaker 3: of as we continue to work through the rest of
- 4:14Speaker 3: the season here.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's going to be a valuable asset for
- 4:18Speaker 1: you all season. No question about it. Jack O'Connor, the kicker,
- 4:22Speaker 1: young guy, eight straight points after, which is good. Did
- 4:25Speaker 1: not attempt a field goal in the game, but kickers
- 4:29Speaker 1: are funny, right? When you're making them, you love them.
- 4:32Speaker 1: When they miss them, what do you do? What are
- 4:35Speaker 1: you going to do when a guy misses? I've seen
- 4:38Speaker 1: some misses this week.
- 4:39Speaker 2: That's all.
- 4:40Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Well, I mean, look, nobody's perfect, and I think there's
- 4:46Speaker 3: going to be– there's going to be a time where
- 4:48Speaker 3: we're going to miss one. Right.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And, but I don't.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Think that that's an indictment of the kid's character or a,
- 4:55Speaker 3: you know, like this is, you're going to get another opportunity. So,
- 4:58Speaker 3: or figure out why we didn't make that one and,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and go, you know, get ready to go make the
- 5:04Speaker 3: next one. And, you know, you, you know, before we
- 5:07Speaker 3: got on the air, you're talking about playing golf. You don't,
- 5:09Speaker 3: if you hit a bad tee shot, you don't, you
- 5:11Speaker 3: don't break your driver over your knee and hit your,
- 5:13Speaker 3: your five iron off the tee every time.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I mean, you, you, you get a process, you go back,
- 5:17Speaker 3: you get your feet set, you square up, put the
- 5:19Speaker 3: ball on the ground and you hit a good tee.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Shot on the next hole.
- 5:22Speaker 3: So, um, yeah, I mean, some of that becomes a
- 5:25Speaker 3: mental thing, but I think you, you always want to
- 5:27Speaker 3: make sure your players know that you believe in them
- 5:28Speaker 3: and you have confidence in them to, to continue to
- 5:30Speaker 3: roll them out there and put them in positions where,
- 5:33Speaker 3: You know, we watch it every day in practice.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it's not a you miss one
- 5:37Speaker 2: and next thing you know, you.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Can't throw them away. You can't replace them at this
- 5:40Speaker 3: point in time. So, you know, you got to live
- 5:42Speaker 3: with the good and you got to live with the
- 5:43Speaker 3: bad sometimes.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, penalties. I'm only going to bring this up because
- 5:48Speaker 1: I was watching another game where a field goal was kicked.
- 5:53Speaker 1: It was a 3-0 game. I can't remember which game now.
- 5:55Speaker 1: This is terrible. Anyway, second field goal made, but penalties.
- 6:01Speaker 1: pushed him back five yards, kicker missed the next one.
- 6:05Speaker 1: It kind of changed the momentum of that game. So,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, penalties, you don't want what you had on Saturday, but,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you know, it was a blowout win. How do you
- 6:16Speaker 1: deal with that?
- 6:16Speaker 2: What do you do?
- 6:17Speaker 1: What do you talk to the players about when you say, look, guys,
- 6:20Speaker 1: five holding penalties? Come on.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I mean, just like you deal with anything, you tell
- 6:26Speaker 2: yourself the truth, right?
- 6:28Speaker 3: We're not doing– a good enough job of moving our
- 6:33Speaker 3: feet when rushers are crossing our face. Now in defense
- 6:37Speaker 3: of that, I, we're probably not going to play this week.
- 6:40Speaker 3: We're probably not going to play 14 offensive linemen or
- 6:42Speaker 3: 15 offensive linemen to put them, you're right. So there's
- 6:46Speaker 3: a difference between the first team and the third team,
- 6:48Speaker 3: you know, there's, there's a reason. So, but you want
- 6:52Speaker 3: to make sure that your, your guys that are, that
- 6:54Speaker 3: are going to play the bulk of the snaps, they understand,
- 6:58Speaker 3: you know, the value of playing clean and they understand
- 7:01Speaker 3: the predicaments. You could put your football team in by,
- 7:05Speaker 3: you know, doing selfish things. So you don't, you don't
- 7:09Speaker 3: see any, you know, egregious personal files or anything, you know,
- 7:12Speaker 3: any of that stuff or it's behavioral stuff Saturday. We
- 7:15Speaker 3: just got to, we got to play better with our
- 7:17Speaker 3: feet at corner. We've got to move our feet a
- 7:18Speaker 3: little bit better on the offensive line. And we have
- 7:20Speaker 3: a little faster rusher coming at us like we will
- 7:22Speaker 3: this weekend. We got to stay in front of our
- 7:24Speaker 3: guys and we got to do a good job using
- 7:25Speaker 3: our hands.
- 7:26Speaker 1: All right. I hope, Always something to work on. Jason
- 7:29Speaker 1: Candle with us. We'll take a quick break. One more
- 7:31Speaker 1: segment with him. We'll go big picture a little bit.
- 7:34Speaker 1: We'll talk about what's going on in college football. That's
- 7:37Speaker 1: next on the UConn Football Coaches Show on Learfield.
