- 0:00It's bonus time, we're honored Athletics, LLC would allow us to
- 0:03present to you the audio version of their weekly Friday Night,
- 0:06YouTube series. Let's get to and see what the
- 0:08crew has in store this week. We're recording gentlemen.
- 0:41Are We Ready set? Go just kidding.
- 0:45Welcome to Athletics. LLC.
- 0:47Well, have another fun episode for you promised.
- 0:50We are missing a child this week.
- 0:51Unfortunately a judicious has some business to tend to, but we
- 0:56promise it wasn't because of any crazy.
- 0:58Shenanigans from the birthday. He actually has business to tend
- 1:01to. So before we forget, happy
- 1:04birthday just to Lucius, he's a 36 years young.
- 1:09I'll invert the number. So, it sounds better, though.
- 1:12Love it, love it. Love it, love it.
- 1:14So, as we get started with the evening, I love the topics that
- 1:20we came up with this week, because we're kind of going back
- 1:22to Our Roots little bit and giving some, some advice and
- 1:25some some Credence to how we all got here in our current places.
- 1:30So, before we get started, Clyde, how are you this evening?
- 1:35Sir, I'm still in my my office. As your eyes start to roll
- 1:44backwards a little bit. See now now now people
- 1:48understand when when married men get left single, we just bury
- 1:56ourselves in work. Who wants to be a home?
- 2:00But wants to be an empty house by themselves.
- 2:02Nobody nobody. Now I like how you just married
- 2:06me all of a sudden. I am no no, I understand.
- 2:16Well well played sir. Cohabitating.
- 2:21Whatever words you want to hear. That's right.
- 2:24Common law, common law. Wow.
- 2:30You're also getting a what's that called?
- 2:34Judicial education. That's right.
- 2:51All right, we're done. But the longer cardiac Road
- 3:04rather are you busy? Oh man it's a crazy time to be a
- 3:12roadrunner. I mean what can I say?
- 3:15We you know I left The football game.
- 3:21I had I had three recruits in. We left with 2 minutes and 20.
- 3:2623 seconds left in the game and we had just scored a touchdown.
- 3:30And we're thinking, okay, we're going to be all right, we get to
- 3:35the parking lot and by the time I get in the car, nor Texas has
- 3:40driven down and scored a touchdown.
- 3:43We get the ball back with a minute, 30.
- 3:48Right, no timeouts. And we ended up at 4th and to a
- 3:54Midfield, I don't know how or wide receiver had the
- 3:59wherewithal to reach his hand, over to get the first down.
- 4:03We're 36 seconds. So once the whistle goes, the
- 4:06clock goes, right? So we had, you know, it's one of
- 4:09those deals, like, you know, exactly what's about to happen.
- 4:13QB, throws a ball way too high over the metal bar, 280-pound,
- 4:18tight end, one hands the ball, snatches it out of the air, we
- 4:25get down to the 10 yard line, you run down hands the ball to
- 4:28the ref. And we, you know, we were
- 4:32thinking. Okay, we're going to spike it to
- 4:33stop the clock, just to set up a play.
- 4:36No, we went straight in, got in a set and Zone, depends on top
- 4:41wide. Receiver jumps up catches the
- 4:43ball. Ten seconds left in the game,
- 4:46unbelievable. So yeah, I'm still recovering.
- 4:51I'm probably watch that video. I don't know 30 times since it's
- 4:55just crazy crazy time. So that's why I have a cardiac
- 5:00roadrunners. That's funny.
- 5:05I mean, same TCU, is liking to have delayed starts at this
- 5:12point. Welcome to the game, Bella's.
- 5:16Yes. A nice things for showing up,
- 5:20Lamar from afar. How are you, sir?
- 5:24Other than my laggy Wi-Fi, I'm good.
- 5:29Unfortunately, I've unfortunately grown accustomed
- 5:32to waking up at 3:45 and getting in my car or a car at 4:00 and
- 5:37driving towards an airport. Welcome to adulthood sir.
- 5:45Thanks for joining the party. It's like the pro career part
- 5:49two is what that is. That's what it is.
- 5:52Definitely pro career. Many profound reports three and
- 5:55flights of our agents put us on for our layovers that they
- 6:01didn't. They just neglected to tell us
- 6:03about, you know stuff. No, no, no, yes.
- 6:08The with the worst feeling it was for you Lamar.
- 6:11But the worst for me was I was going from I was trying to Lentz
- 6:19and I get to Frankfurt airport at 6:30 in the morning.
- 6:26Yes, when my flight to Linds? What's the next day?
- 6:30My flight to limbs was at 6:00 that evening?
- 6:35Yeah. I spent 12 hours?
- 6:38Yeah. Like I got on the train, just
- 6:42sat there in the town square and watch Frankfurt.
- 6:45Come to life. It's you just figure it out, you
- 6:49figure it out. I'm trying to imagine, like,
- 6:52today's athletes, having to navigate something like that.
- 6:55Our and he didn't just buy, the cheapest ticket puts you on the
- 6:59plane. You get over there and you're
- 7:01just like what the happening you're packing the airport.
- 7:07Oh yeah. Because like so like my worst
- 7:09story for sure the anxiety attack and the full-fledged sit
- 7:13down plop down, cross your legs and just rock back and forth and
- 7:16Sehun from for today's kids. This is what happened.
- 7:21My flight gets gets booked agent.
- 7:24Tells me you're flying into London.
- 7:26You gotta you gotta relatively tight tight window.
- 7:30You're not going to be on the ground very long, you got an
- 7:31hour and 20 minutes and then you fly out to I think I'm going
- 7:34someplace in Germany. Okay, sounds good.
- 7:37Something tells me to double-check my ticket.
- 7:41I flew in to Heathrow and out of Gatwick, for those of you have
- 7:48done that, those are nomadic different airports.
- 7:51Absolutely sides. No an hour and 22 because you
- 7:59got to get your bags. So to go through security get
- 8:03your bags go secure Ataxia that sound over and get that get
- 8:09across town through. Traffic and they get back to
- 8:12security and check their bags. That's right.
- 8:14You're asking for to be Merlin's wizard.
- 8:17Absolutely. That is one of two times in my
- 8:20entire life I've ever run in an airport and I literally don't
- 8:28move through the door as the lady was attempting to close the
- 8:32door of my flight cuz I like I am not getting stranded in
- 8:35Europe trying to fly standby. That's not happening.
- 8:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:39So for sure today's athlete that is probably a panic attack and a
- 8:45full-fledged sit in like someone is going to fix this.
- 8:50Yes, yes, yes, yes. And and, and redundant and silly
- 8:55questions, like, why does London have two airports?
- 9:00Why didn't anyone tell me, right?
- 9:03The same reason that New York has two ports.
- 9:06Dallas has two airports. Exactly.
- 9:09I feel like laying has like four.
- 9:12I could make every know I couldn't figure out that LH R
- 9:16and L. GW are two totally different
- 9:18things. It just never really didn't.
- 9:21It didn't register. Well, On to see that's like
- 9:30stuff people would never know. London.
- 10:10Yeah, then last three I didn't know nothing about but the
- 10:12mother one's identity. Wow, yeah.
- 10:15And pretty much the major airlines in the state's fly, fly
- 10:20in and out of Heathrow for the most part.
- 10:23Yes. And there's and there's some
- 10:25Gatwick for the most Start the major airlines don't fly out of
- 10:30the other for. But but if your agent booked
- 10:33your ticket is, no guarantee that you're going to be on a
- 10:35major, absolutely. Now, I could tell you all my
- 10:40Sweden story but we try to keep the show.
- 10:43Yes. Yes, we've been lighting.
- 10:46The audience enough will have a beautiful so and definitely we
- 10:51don't want to test the Red Roof Inn Wi-Fi because it's early a
- 10:54little glitchy, so keep moving forward.
- 11:00That, you know, there's a couple Hot Topics in regards to
- 11:04institution ncaa's institutions. Things that how we're changing
- 11:10certain things? One of them being ni L name
- 11:13image and likeness. So within the Scopes that you
- 11:17all are in respectively. How is it changed the game in
- 11:21our sport? In our sport is the interesting
- 11:27piece of this, right? I ain't gonna lie to you.
- 11:30I don't think ni L has done much of anything in our Sport and I
- 11:34would love to be proven wrong in that regard, but all it's really
- 11:38done is give the powers that be the first world problems if we
- 11:44will, if they're lucious was here, we would tease him about
- 11:47this, right? It's just given them another
- 11:50layer of separation. That they can't out.
- 11:56And, you know, promote and probably in some cases use right
- 12:02to further separate the gap between the Haves and the Have
- 12:06Nots but I don't know of too many track and field athletes.
- 12:12You know, from recruiting perspective that are signing
- 12:17major in il deals, I'm sure it's coming.
- 12:20I'm sure it'll probably start in Gainesville but you know I just
- 12:25I haven't I haven't felt that piece of it yet but it's a
- 12:30great, it's a great marketing tool and it's a great
- 12:33recruiting, you know, push I've actually been quite impressed
- 12:39with the way. Our campus is a vape, creating
- 12:41the marketplace. They right.
- 12:43But I think the the transfer portal has is a much bigger deal
- 12:50of changing the game. I really haven't felt a huge
- 12:52impact for men, IL in our sport yet, I will piggyback off of you
- 13:01Clyde. And and I think the operative
- 13:04word is yet, I don't think it has changed the game in track
- 13:09and field yet, but it's it's coming.
- 13:16I have not just like you, I have not had a situation where, you
- 13:21know, I've been told that, you know, sorry, I can't come to
- 13:25your school because I'm getting x amount of dollars from X
- 13:31Program. And you know, this money has
- 13:33been bequeathed to me because I am such X Y and Z athlete.
- 13:40And this was promised to me to sign with the school.
- 13:44I have not experienced that as yet.
- 13:47I mean, literally what I'm dealing with is, you know, the
- 13:52extra cost of attendance, they all said money, you know, that's
- 13:57that's where the separation is as far as I'm concerned.
- 14:00And, you know, once you know, I'm having a conversation in a
- 14:04young man or young woman tells me that they're getting x amount
- 14:08of money on top of, you know, their scholarship.
- 14:12Hey, I say, hey, you nice. You have a nice life.
- 14:15You know, it's awesome. Have have fun with that, you
- 14:20know. Make sure you you invest, you
- 14:24know, well you know, so you can buy your house as soon as you
- 14:27graduate and you know, and all of that.
- 14:29So but no, I have not. I do not think that ni L has
- 14:36taken hold in track and field yet, but it's going to take some
- 14:43very enterprising. Young man and young woman and
- 14:47some very enterprising admit athletic departments and how
- 14:51many athletic departments around the country?
- 14:54See you value in that right now. When the battle is Raging right
- 14:59now in football where you know, it's interesting that you
- 15:05brought this question up, Lamar, because I am what we're seeing
- 15:11right now is we're seeing where ni L has failed.
- 15:15Miserably. There is that all there is there
- 15:20and it's coming to the fore. Now we're congratulations uses
- 15:26signed, you know, one of the greatest classes but they're
- 15:31still freshmen and they still got time and they still have,
- 15:37you know, we still going to be two to three years before this
- 15:41actually pays off, you know? And we're Watching programs
- 15:47literally implode now because of the amount of money and
- 15:52resources that were generated to put these signing classes
- 15:57together. And nobody thought about the
- 16:00fact that You know from from when you talk about the the
- 16:06portal, if School X gets five portal kids that are Bonafide
- 16:13Killers, right? That actually has more right
- 16:18now, positive moves than 30 freshman that you just bought,
- 16:27right? Let's call it what it is that
- 16:30still? Don't know how to play this.
- 16:32I mean it's you know, let's call it what it is.
- 16:35College football is a man's game now and people aren't really
- 16:39paying attention. You're dealing with or you know
- 16:42QBs and you know D lineman that are 23 24, 25 years old now you
- 16:49know and that still means something so but yeah that's
- 16:53that's my thought on on ni l in track and field.
- 16:58Well, this is actually awesome because this very rarely happens
- 17:02where there's like literal opposite sides to the coin.
- 17:06I will say this by definition and IL is a first world problem.
- 17:12Like, literally by definition, right?
- 17:14You're not have an image and likeness conversations at the,
- 17:17at, the, at the mid major group of five for the most part level,
- 17:22right? Like, because that is probably
- 17:24not going to be the separator between you and another group of
- 17:27five School. That's probably not it.
- 17:29So for, so, for the most part we are talking about first world
- 17:32first, world problems and issues.
- 17:34But I will tell you what I have seen, which is interesting
- 17:37because I am not directly a college coach anymore, but I
- 17:43have seen it play out in a couple ways one and IL money is
- 17:50the great parachute, you have spent all the money, you spent
- 17:54all the portal, money, you have no money left.
- 17:57Absolute Bang. ER comes open the portal.
- 18:00You now have a way to still get said kit.
- 18:03And I've seen it happen, right? Like we are out of money.
- 18:08Make a phone call to the collective, the collective says,
- 18:10but we can't have that. Where is this athlete?
- 18:13Going to go if we don't get them.
- 18:16In conference and Conference in conference or incompetence.
- 18:19Oh, that will never do. Give them the bag, they will
- 18:25come here, like will cover all the costs of the school and then
- 18:29they could still like, you know, I don't know what the rules are.
- 18:33Awesome money, what? Like whatever they can't get
- 18:35that, they should get will cover that to him.
- 18:38And I was like, well, there you go.
- 18:40There's n IL to the rescue, right?
- 18:44Right. It do here.
- 18:45If your 12.6 isn't enough for your 18 isn't enough, and you
- 18:48have a collective, and the right kid pops up Bang.
- 18:53Right, there's your money. It has definitely changed
- 18:58International recruiting at the high high high end because
- 19:03that's the skirt around, right? Like, you can't sign in and IL
- 19:06deals for international kids. However, the international kid
- 19:10can sign in il deal at home. If the company is global, the
- 19:15money can still end up. Can still end up in that
- 19:19country. And NIU Nai LDL can still be
- 19:21signed and Bob's your uncle, right?
- 19:25But the third part and a part that I have found very very
- 19:28interesting. There is now a very silent
- 19:33battle going on on campuses. Your top and donors have money
- 19:41that they literally can set on fire.
- 19:43It doesn't matter what your mid-level donors.
- 19:46These are still really important people, right?
- 19:49They put money into programs and they help, you know, you need to
- 19:53get a pole vault pit or you need to, you know, like items that
- 19:57makes any sense not buildings, right?
- 20:01now, there is a There is a war being rage because in the past
- 20:07you knew you had a guy or a girl that you could tab for like that
- 20:11special item. The problem is that person is
- 20:15now already been tab by Collective X Collective, why?
- 20:20And is already like in the pockets of three athletes and
- 20:25because he or she is a mid-level donor, there's no more money.
- 20:29Yeah. So now there's a small silent
- 20:33battle going between Do the donor, give the money to the
- 20:38athletes and does the monkey. Does the donor, give the money
- 20:40to the program. So I find it very interesting.
- 20:45Yes it is. A first world problem at this
- 20:47point and and and I think these things that I'm talking about
- 20:52are these wars are being waged on probably about 12 to 12 to 20
- 20:57campuses currently. But to you guys is point if you
- 21:02pay attention, everything that happens in the power 5 level
- 21:05happens at the group of five level one year, two years later,
- 21:09everything. Right?
- 21:10So it's coming Right? And so, you know, and believe me
- 21:15if it happens in other sports, it gets to track a year, maybe
- 21:20two years later so I'm telling you this was going on.
- 21:23In baseball is literally the Wild Wild West.
- 21:29Well, actually, there are schools, there are schools that
- 21:31are you know, because you can buy players in baseball and it
- 21:35be more effective than buying football players that are
- 21:37freshman, right? Because now you're talking about
- 21:40buying kids out of the draft, like I watched that happen where
- 21:47a kid is being offered, the two hundred thousand dollar signing
- 21:51bonus. Right, doesn't think that's
- 21:54enough. So the school gives them 125 and
- 22:01IL for them to be on campus for three years and they're still
- 22:06going to get at the very, very good leads the bag that they
- 22:09were initially offered and we like to be a bigger bag.
- 22:11So ostensibly she get 125 for three years.
- 22:15You got three hundred seventy-five thousand dollars
- 22:17already. So we're already giving you more
- 22:19money than you were going to sign for. and we don't have a
- 22:23draft in track, but That's going to happen.
- 22:29Somebody that there's going to be a high school kid considering
- 22:34Pro or not in track. Obviously, there aren't a ton of
- 22:37those, we get that right, but somebody's going to decide.
- 22:40Well, if we give this kid enough money, you'll come to school for
- 22:43a year or two. She'll come to school for a year
- 22:46or two hundred percent, and I will was just not going to go
- 22:54there. But yes, like for sure, there is
- 22:56one that it's going to happen. And it's coming here this year
- 23:02so it's coming. I read this question.
- 23:07Saw it in different light than you all did, but I'm going to
- 23:09come back to your life to thinking about how it's changed
- 23:12the game, in our sport, in regards to the athletes, and
- 23:15where they're signing. Because the markets are
- 23:17different in different areas. Yes.
- 23:21Right. Right.
- 23:23So the ability to sign different contracts, the ability to have
- 23:26different vision. And or visibility, I'm sorry
- 23:30changes the game is to money that can be attained at the G5
- 23:33level. Just speaking specifically,
- 23:35right on that part thinking about ni L and how it changes
- 23:44From the parental you don't standpoint.
- 23:50We use n IL at a part of a recruiting process as education.
- 23:54The education that we provide for our student-athletes and how
- 23:59we're going to jump ahead of it and not let you fall through the
- 24:02cracks and things of that nature has given us.
- 24:04The definite leg up in regards to that aspect.
- 24:09We have lost a kid because of additional and I Elman that lost
- 24:13a couple kids. So that I mean it's not that the
- 24:16hundred thousand two hundred thousands but it's money and you
- 24:20know unfortunately we are used to the pain.
- 24:21He's already so it wasn't pennies Is large enough and
- 24:27that's but that's the point, right?
- 24:28Like right now in track, it's all perception, and mouthpiece
- 24:33hears it. And listen, if you can, if you
- 24:36can talk that talk and and sell the vision of the possibility of
- 24:41what that can be the better recruit?
- 24:44No, well, not even what it could be.
- 24:46They're getting the money locked in.
- 24:47Yeah, I get that. But what I'm saying is be, it's
- 24:50not a comparable to football. It's not a straight line.
- 24:54Where kids are being purchased. Yeah.
- 24:58Right. My elected to be the next UTSA
- 25:02spring star, right? Like that.
- 25:04That's not happening yet it's easy.
- 25:06It's easy to. It's easy for an ni L Collective
- 25:10comparative to football, right? It's easy to go to the
- 25:13collective and find an extra thousand bucks.
- 25:16Hmm. Because in our nickel-and-dime
- 25:19world that'll be enough, right? Yeah, any little any little
- 25:24carrot that Can use two separate works.
- 25:27Like we're G5, right, but we're one of the few schools in G5 is
- 25:32doing Alston. We're one of the few schools in
- 25:35G5 that has a in il Collective, right, published advertise,
- 25:40right? And so you can, it's more for
- 25:43me, it's more. So if you're here, this is what
- 25:47is possible versus UTSA. Offered you three thousand, more
- 25:53bucks, On the side through the collector like it's coming.
- 25:58Yeah, it was absolutely going to be there because the first time
- 26:02that big school X feels like they cost them a national
- 26:07champion and because they, you know, because they couldn't
- 26:10deliver the collective, I would, what I would love to know is how
- 26:16many universities track programs that have a collective on the
- 26:21campus? I'm sorry off the campus, they
- 26:23have a collective. Elected to the campus.
- 26:26Even take calls for track and field right now.
- 26:29Because, you know, I mean like that.
- 26:32Not a priority. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:35And I will say this, you know, like the another way that it's,
- 26:38again, these things are small and subtle right now, but they
- 26:41won't be, right? Is that when you get your money
- 26:45through the track program, it's NCAA regulated at there's dates
- 26:50as to, when you're going to get paid every month or every or
- 26:52every half semester, however, it is Right?
- 26:55When you get your money from a collective, they're going to
- 26:58like they make a decision when the money's coming, right?
- 27:02It may not be the first week of school.
- 27:05Yeah, yeah, right. You and maybe one of those
- 27:09deals, like, look, you're going to get your whole years worth of
- 27:11money all at once, but it's going to be like December 1st.
- 27:16So you have to figure it out till bit, you know, like it's
- 27:20just it's the changes are going to come fast and furious to
- 27:26track because they're going to come late right that it's
- 27:31whenever the trickle-down happens, it happens fastest at
- 27:34the end and will be one of the, you know, we'll be in that group
- 27:37of sports that Okay now. And, you know, now there's an IL
- 27:42deals for like, you know what, every school at every level, and
- 27:45yada, yada yada, and it's going to be Well, the thing, the
- 27:50thing, that the thing that I'm curious about is, you know, and
- 27:56well, I'll put it to you like this.
- 28:00What I'm curious about is how many schools actually see value
- 28:06in having a winning track and field team.
- 28:10Yeah. And you know, whether they're
- 28:13willing to put their money, where their mouth is, especially
- 28:16if it starts to go into become, you know, becoming a bidding
- 28:19war, like which institutions are going to be at the Forefront of
- 28:24that, and I mean, what we're doing right now.
- 28:28I mean, it's Be clear that there are certain schools that I have
- 28:32a lot more individual talent in volume than other schools.
- 28:41There, there is no question about it and we could probably
- 28:44name the top five right now off the top of our album, there
- 28:49ain't no probably to that, right?
- 28:52So, it's becoming more of a not Who can you bring?
- 28:59But how many how many unbelievable, you know,
- 29:07athletes, can you bring to your program?
- 29:10And how do you afford that, how do you go past our?
- 29:14How do you spread that money and add an alive and il-2?
- 29:19It to be able to have that group of athletes?
- 29:22When you step off the bus, I mean now you have a backup to
- 29:26the backup to the backup to the Back up, right?
- 29:29And that's, I think that's, that's where we're headed right
- 29:32now. I mean, and it's pretty clear to
- 29:33me which schools are at the Forefront of that.
- 29:39And here's ni 0 represents to me in our sport opportunity because
- 29:48at the end of the day, n, IL is basically an advertising
- 29:53function, right? So if I'm Small school X but I'm
- 29:59based in Chicago, but I'm based in New York.
- 30:04And IL is the greatest equalizer I could ever have because on
- 30:07reputation, I can't do battle with the quote unquote powers
- 30:12that be, I can't out recruit the SEC but there's more money in my
- 30:16backyard. Hmm, more.
- 30:18People who care about my University's rep in my backyard
- 30:22with Bigger Pockets, in theory, if they care, if I can
- 30:27mouthpiece my way into that, if I can make it make sense to
- 30:30them, right? So it's an opportunity to
- 30:33Equalizer. But that's one of those
- 30:36situations where leadership matters.
- 30:38Yep. Alf piece matters?
- 30:40Yep. And are you, are you as is your
- 30:44University willing to and do you have the skill set as a coach to
- 30:49do more than just teach people how to run fast?
- 30:52I mean, think about what you just said.
- 30:54So you think about the powers, the Villanova's of the world,
- 31:00the pits, the The Seton Hall's It's of the world.
- 31:04I mean, it's an opportunity. They have those schools have a
- 31:09unbelievable Legacy. When you think about what they
- 31:12used to be able to do and the programs that they used to just
- 31:17turn out year after year. I mean it's you got to wonder
- 31:22like I mean. Is anyone sitting there going
- 31:25man? Like I'd love to go back to the
- 31:28Glory Days. That would be nice.
- 31:30You know, well so far, I like to you guys is point, right?
- 31:34Like what I'm interested to see is when somebody is smart enough
- 31:40to actually use the words right, like the ri right now, all ni L
- 31:46deal means is like extra scholarship money.
- 31:48That's really what anybody seeks, see.
- 31:50I think they're missing the point, right?
- 31:53I'm gonna I'll pick a school. We'll make it up.
- 31:57The Southern University of Los Angeles.
- 32:00He's right. If I'm that school I am
- 32:04literally going to use your name image and likeness to me to
- 32:11drive legitimate career moves and finances for both the school
- 32:18and yourself, right? Like I mean there's
- 32:21opportunities to put you in, you know get your sag card and put
- 32:25you in in in like commercials and things that have like
- 32:29forever. Royalties.
- 32:32Like that's the part that's actually not being used.
- 32:35Yet is the actual name image and likeness?
- 32:40And I say that because most of these kids are not reading these
- 32:44contracts. Yes, somebody's going to Simon 8
- 32:46sine sine and N IL deal for 10 grand and find out that they
- 32:50gave away their name image and likeness to, you know, to Reebok
- 32:55to globally Print T-Shirts, you know, shoes everything.
- 33:00Else and they get zero percentage.
- 33:02Of? Yes, that's comment.
- 33:04I said that two years ago. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 33:08But to that don't. So that's what I'm looking for.
- 33:11I'm looking to see when the names image in the likenesses
- 33:14are actually being exploited. It's because that's coming at
- 33:17some point. It'll or what he's gotten to
- 33:20that, yet, it'll all come, but that, like, that's the thing,
- 33:23right? Like what?
- 33:24What happens, first, the rich get richer, write the name
- 33:27brand, programs are going to be the first people out front
- 33:29taking The Venom is in likeness, but to your point.
- 33:33If LA City Tech in downtown Los Angeles or in North Hollywood
- 33:39Los Angeles cared enough? Yeah.
- 33:42Oh, they could cripple that absolutely sure.
- 33:45They're locate. I mean for sure for sure.
- 33:48Yes. With that, I want to touch on
- 33:52the international student body. There is a collective who has
- 33:58put up the first International. So in a foreign language
- 34:02billboard / ni L Penn State, it's a Penn State athletes, the
- 34:09company. The collective is a Success With
- 34:13Honor is had put up the Billboards in Toronto and
- 34:18Ontario. So it's the first of its kind in
- 34:20the foreign language in a foreign country and they've done
- 34:23sin with basketball. I just got sent this article
- 34:25today from our ni L people. It's Leonard, Li people making
- 34:29things up as they go. Yes.
- 34:31And so what's happening is, is the collective, is keeping the
- 34:35money for them in that country. Mhm.
- 34:39And then passing it that way versus, you know, we had That
- 34:43know, whatever their student athletes.
- 34:45Who were trying to collect small ni else from their country, stop
- 34:49on the countryside. And then having a deposit into a
- 34:52bank or giving to their family to give to them, you know, and
- 34:55whatever the process is that, I don't know.
- 34:57But like now they're going as far as that, there's basketball
- 35:02Billboards, there's talk about in this article, the Kentucky
- 35:08forward, Who. I was able to get licenses name
- 35:15and image and likeness, a lucrative loophole that is
- 35:18netting him about 20,000 a month in just apparel sales.
- 35:22Wow. Yeah.
- 35:24It is. All those all the hiding money.
- 35:27Chicane arethat goes on in White Collar.
- 35:30Land is rushing in right now on the football basketball side.
- 35:37It's it's chaos here. Like this is.
- 35:41This is where we are. It's not going back the other
- 35:42way. Way.
- 35:43The genie is out of the proverbial bottle and I want to
- 35:48say this one last thing and then and then definitely definitely,
- 35:51Madam chew we can move on. But just remember this, we have
- 35:56this untenable monster. There is NI L because the NCAA
- 36:00and their corrupt self refused to give the athletes three
- 36:02thousand dollars a year. Yeah.
- 36:05Pretty much. Man, if you look at that price
- 36:09tag, now they really dropped the ball there.
- 36:12Mmm. So anyway, I will, I will say
- 36:19this, I think what ni L is going to lead to at the highest level
- 36:26where you talk about football basketball is that we're going
- 36:29to see programs literally explode, and implode like that.
- 36:35Sure, I mean, it's goes Super come, it's going to become
- 36:41dizzy. I think we're going to get dizzy
- 36:43from the amount of, I mean, Herbal chaos Clyde, my favorite.
- 36:49My favorite and IL story is still is still yours.
- 36:52And that's that's the name, right?
- 36:54The quarterback at Texas. Yes.
- 36:55Yeah. Signed a million-dollar and iíll
- 36:58deal to graduate high school early and in roller at Ohio,
- 37:01State never played their did like it left took the bag with
- 37:04them exist and IL story. Every unbeliever state literally
- 37:08paid a million dollars to a kid that never played for them.
- 37:11Yeah, Love it next to. So you do with our old wise
- 37:20beards were all rubbing them right now, we've got some advice
- 37:26from our life stories as to the, for the young coaches and maybe
- 37:29not young and age, but young and coaching career, what is one
- 37:34must do and one must do not do As a young coach, sorry about
- 37:43that. I got to go last last time, so I
- 37:47guess I'll fall on the sword and I'll go.
- 37:49First this time, I will say, I'll take the lowest of all
- 37:55low-hanging fruit. If you've if you've watched four
- 37:58episodes from the show, you've heard this said if you don't do
- 38:01anything as a young or under experienced coach, if you don't
- 38:07do anything you have better, get not but some mentors.
- 38:15Like get you some parents real quick.
- 38:19Like one of the most important they will stop you.
- 38:21If they'll keep you help you keep your job.
- 38:23They'll stop you from, from Reinventing, the wheel, all of
- 38:27those things. And and if you ever, you know,
- 38:29if you're one of those people who like wants to fast-track and
- 38:32Advance yourself the fastest way, and best way to advance
- 38:35yourself in this sport is have good mentors.
- 38:43Absolutely do not do so and I think I want to stay away from
- 38:50the obvious, right? So like you know, listen don't
- 38:53don't don't diddle with the kids like you know, don't don't do
- 38:57any of the truly obvious things. So, I'm going to step away from
- 39:00that and say this, I think one of the most obvious things that
- 39:06you have to do in particular, if you were a decorated athlete. is
- 39:13immediately stop thinking autobiographically once you,
- 39:17once you man a stopwatch Who you were as an athlete is
- 39:22holistically irrelevant. And the athletes that you are
- 39:25coaching, are not some percentage of you.
- 39:28They're not a younger version of you, they are in no way shape or
- 39:32form related to you, even if they look just like you even if
- 39:36they have the same High School PBS's, you Coach, what's in
- 39:40front of you? And don't compare it to who you
- 39:44are or were or what you think of yourself.
- 39:48Stick. So as far as must do, and I've
- 39:57told this story at nauseam and it's one of those stories that,
- 40:03you know, telling young coaches and I found myself telling my
- 40:07story and after a, while I'm getting this blazed overlooked,
- 40:14because they're looking at me like You did this for free for
- 40:19six year? I knew that was coming.
- 40:22Yes. Like what Hell no.
- 40:27Like I'm trying to get paid, like the whole idea of being an
- 40:31assistant at an NCAA D1 school is that you get paid?
- 40:37Of course, right. Well, the one thing I will say
- 40:42is that if you do not respect the profession on the on the
- 40:50lowest possible level. If you do not respect, what has
- 40:56to happen to keep a program of float.
- 41:00And I'm talking about from the volunteers, to the folks, that
- 41:05work the grounds, the folks that, you know, the This the,
- 41:10you know, all those folks that keep that program propped up
- 41:15the, you know, the director of Ops the travel travel person,
- 41:22all those things, if you do not respect, what it is that they
- 41:27do, you are not going to make it in this profession.
- 41:31And and and for me, I needed all that time.
- 41:37And to LaMar's point I needed all All that time to let the
- 41:42Kareem Street Thompson, you know, professional athlete.
- 41:46Everybody's catering to me, the phone's ringing off the hook.
- 41:50Translation transition into, I need to get this this rate.
- 41:55Respect the spin rate. I need to have these hurdles
- 41:59shed set up for practice. I need to preempt my the coach
- 42:05and I'm helping I need to be the one already out there.
- 42:09Getting stuff ready. I need to make sure the cones
- 42:12are in place. I don't need to be waiting to be
- 42:15told what to do. And those are the little things.
- 42:20Is that actually, you know helped me get a leg up when
- 42:23people look at my career and they wonder how I moved from
- 42:27being a volunteer to Missouri to Texas within two years.
- 42:33That's what happened, because let's call it what it is when
- 42:38you've had a storied career People are automatically going
- 42:42to assume that you're going to walk into a room and expect to
- 42:46be catered to, right? So when you flip the script
- 42:50enough and you so know that you can be selfless, you can be
- 42:53loyal you can you know, be pre-emptive.
- 42:57You can be the Yes Man. Then it changes the perspective
- 43:01completely. So of course, your head coach is
- 43:05going to pick up the phone and say, hey, this dude is for Real,
- 43:09he's got the credentials and he's also home and he's also
- 43:13going to help you, you know, build that program.
- 43:17He identifies with the kids, the kids identify with him and then
- 43:21things move in a very very fast track at that point.
- 43:26But let's not. Ignore the six years of just
- 43:33slugging it out, you know? And and that's something that,
- 43:38you know, again. Like I said, people don't want
- 43:39to hear it. They don't want to hear that,
- 43:42but I feel like it's very important.
- 43:45There's there should be some sort of transition while you're
- 43:49moving from whatever it is you were doing before into being a
- 43:52full-time coach at the NCAA level.
- 43:57I could, I could not Be with you more.
- 44:01I don't want. Their internet done.
- 44:07You there. Whatever you're here we call out
- 44:13the while he's gross. While he's Frozen while he's
- 44:21Frozen there. Can y'all hear me and see me
- 44:24now? You can hear you yes the
- 44:25governor didn't tell us his don't do.
- 44:28Oh boy I got a don't do but you go ahead first.
- 44:33Okay I was just going to say that like my first two years of
- 44:37college coaching, I had to actually sign a contract for
- 44:40zero dollars and zero cents because they gave me ACC
- 44:44basketball tickets and they had value.
- 44:47So my First three years of college coaching and I coach
- 44:50several conference championships conference conference champions
- 44:54level kids in the ACC. My first three years I made a
- 44:58total of ten thousand dollars I'm going to.
- 45:03I'm going to do answer this, these questions and give my
- 45:11advice in a in a metaphor. Okay, you must diversify your
- 45:19portfolio. And what I mean by that is if
- 45:24the only people, you know, are the people that do the exact
- 45:28same jobs that you do, You're doing this wrong.
- 45:32If you only, if you're an assistant and all, you know, it
- 45:35ships, you have or with other assistants, you're doing this
- 45:38wrong. You need to find a respectful.
- 45:42And classy way to build relationships with head,
- 45:44coaches, need to find a respectful.
- 45:46And classy way to build relationships with
- 45:49administrators because I assure you, the associate ad, picking
- 45:54up a phone on your behalf. Usually means a lot more than a
- 45:57coach. Yep.
- 45:59So you need to diversify your profile your portfolio within
- 46:03whatever job you want. Need to find a way to show value
- 46:09Beyond. What your daily description is
- 46:12supposed to be and that will serve you.
- 46:15Well, You need to humble yourself.
- 46:21You need to humble yourself. You better find a way to humble
- 46:24yourself. This profession by definition is
- 46:27humbling and there are moments where you will need to swallow,
- 46:33whatever prize, you think you have and to see the bigger
- 46:36picture. So in those moments, Just
- 46:41remember that you need to humble yourself in order to move to the
- 46:44next thing you're trying to do the third must do you must know
- 46:48your audience that pertains to the kids that pertains to who
- 46:53you're working for that pertains to knowing when to speak, who to
- 46:57speak to you need, you need to be aware of.
- 47:01Who you're speaking around. You need to know your audience.
- 47:05So those are my three better do, diversify your A folio be humble
- 47:12and know your audience the simplest way that I can say that
- 47:17you better not do, you better not be messing.
- 47:23If you're messy in this profession, I imagining any
- 47:26profession, but especially in this profession, if you're
- 47:29messy, it's going, you're going to be exposed for being messy.
- 47:35In whatever regards you want to be, you're going to get exposed
- 47:39for me, a message, you can't be messing with the kids.
- 47:41You can't be messing with your bosses.
- 47:43You can't be messing with administrators.
- 47:45You can't be out in the world talking trash about people.
- 47:48You work for or with if you're messy.
- 47:52You can't be at the convention doing things.
- 47:54You ain't supposed to be doing like you can't be messy and have
- 47:59your reputation intact in this game.
- 48:02The world is too small, too many people know people.
- 48:08Don't be messing. My and even perceivably messy,
- 48:12you don't even have to ask. Messi is almost worse, right?
- 48:18Because it's one thing if you if you went out and did something
- 48:22and you leaked it, leaked it to the world.
- 48:24It's a whole nother thing if you didn't do anything.
- 48:26But you just move so messy that everybody thinks, right?
- 48:32So yeah, you need to not be messy and within the bounds of
- 48:37Nationalism like this, this industry is fun right?
- 48:42You meet incredible people, you build real relationships.
- 48:46He'll people have met their husbands and wives, right?
- 48:50Not the messy ones have lost their husbands and wives.
- 48:55All right, so just don't be messy. as far as I must not, do
- 49:05kind of went over this in my head and it kind of touches on
- 49:09what you said Clyde but the one thing I think that young man and
- 49:13young woman should understand in this profession, is that there
- 49:19are I mean there are multitude of trapdoors of potholes, like
- 49:31are a multitude of things where you can go wrong in this
- 49:37profession there the the NCAA as much as they have, you know.
- 49:47Lessened, the rule book and as much as we're hearing about, you
- 49:52know, our esteemed president, you know, wanting to make things
- 49:56a little more free and easy. There are still parameters that
- 50:01you have to work within and you know, we're no longer in an age
- 50:08and a generation where the head coach or the assistant coach
- 50:14with His or her group was judge, jury executioner and everything
- 50:19that is no longer the case and the more you understand that?
- 50:27The better And I'll give an example.
- 50:31You know, when we talk about mental health, okay?
- 50:35There are now mechanisms in place where as soon as that
- 50:39comes up, as soon as that is brought up, you have to
- 50:44understand that it's time for you to take a waxy.
- 50:48You need to back off. Okay, I'm talking could stop
- 50:54talking. All right.
- 51:01You know, there are so many different areas.
- 51:06Now that our predecessors even people that are in the
- 51:10profession. Now had complete autonomy to
- 51:15make decisions for these young men and young women to decide.
- 51:21You know what this athlete is no longer going to be a part of my
- 51:24team, X Y and Z, you cannot do that anymore.
- 51:29You know as much as you're thinking in as much as you're
- 51:31feeling it, you're out at the track and you're going mad like,
- 51:35why am I dealing with this right now?
- 51:39It's not up to you anymore. And, you know, it really comes
- 51:43down to mentors people that have been there and done that, you
- 51:49just happen to have a conversation and you bring up a
- 51:52situation. And that Mentor says, dude, I'm
- 51:56gonna give you one of these of advice.
- 51:58Okay, back away back away, stop talking, stop talking.
- 52:05Okay, so that that's my advice and and You know, again it's not
- 52:11to say that you're being insensitive, it's not saying
- 52:14that you are you that you don't care about said, individuals or
- 52:19whatever the bottom line is this.
- 52:23If you start to dabble in certain areas, if you start to
- 52:26move into areas where you it's not your jurisdiction, you will
- 52:30find out real quick. That you're probably not going
- 52:35to make it. Big League especially since
- 52:43Solutions is not with us tonight.
- 52:45I think the audience would very, very much Benefit from your
- 52:50responses. To this particular question is,
- 52:53if you thought I was keeping my mouth shut on this one.
- 52:59Trying, I'm trying to be nice. He's gonna have to watch the
- 53:02show to hear what I said, he here.
- 53:03No, no, no. I can hear all of it.
- 53:10So I must do is You must put your ego aside, you must put
- 53:16your pride aside, you must put all of those things inside, to
- 53:21know, that even in your fifth day, fifth year, 15th year,
- 53:27whatever it is, you've got to be able to put your ego and pride
- 53:32aside to make sure that you're doing what you're doing for the
- 53:35right reason. Because too often too fast, it
- 53:38becomes about what I want and not what's for the program once
- 53:42for the team or what's for the student-athlete themself,
- 53:45because it's not about you because they are the ones who
- 53:48get you your paycheck. So that part the must not do is
- 53:53you cannot take anything personal.
- 54:00And I am daily, reminding myself of that like you cannot take
- 54:04anything personal. Cuz again, it is not about you.
- 54:10Like when your boss comes at you because something didn't get
- 54:14done, it's not about you necessarily not knowing that I
- 54:16was going to get done or doing it incorrectly or anything of
- 54:19that nature. It's just about the task getting
- 54:22done in itself. So I mean short and sweet to the
- 54:26point. Put your pride ego aside and
- 54:29don't take it personal, It Ain't About You.
- 54:32Well sir. That's as I said the audience
- 54:37would definitely benefit from your take on this good stuff.
- 54:42Yeah. Definitely, you know, if anybody
- 54:49has any to add, please feel free to comment them because anybody,
- 54:53who watches, or here's will go to YouTube and at least see
- 54:57that, or even when I post this on Twitter or Facebook,
- 55:01Instagram, whatever, or am I I get to plot, put it up on this
- 55:05week, add it because it's a thread.
- 55:08This is invalid thread. Not a junk Fred?
- 55:10So anyways, last part and man Sticking a fair question.
- 55:17I feel like this is a jab at me right now because I'm definitely
- 55:20taking this one. Personal how do you you all
- 55:24managed or balance the career advancement process with the be
- 55:28where your feet are mantra. and if you don't do that, then tell
- 55:33us what monster you're living by Governor your first, this time,
- 55:39buddy boy. Here's what I'll do.
- 55:57I am finding now that and it's kind of refreshing a lot of
- 56:05athletes in the recruiting process actually thinking about
- 56:11quality of life. Now, About how do I do?
- 56:16I want to go somewhere where You know, it's unfamiliar
- 56:22surroundings, it's you know, I'm going to have to make new
- 56:25friends. It's you know challenging
- 56:27weather and when have to be indoors for five months, six
- 56:31months out of the year. You know, it's 10 of lysing.
- 56:36But do I really want to do that? And it's fun to me to hear
- 56:44athletes that are actually, you know, they're going through
- 56:48this, in their head. They're Ali actually thinking
- 56:51long and hard about making these decisions about where to go
- 56:55where they're going to spend four to five years of their
- 56:57life. And so I kind of use that to say
- 57:03that. If there's anything, I've
- 57:06learned, and if anyone takes a look at my, my rise, you know,
- 57:11in my movement up the ladder, you could be at the greatest
- 57:20program, you could be at the program, that is the most
- 57:24desirable in people's eyes, and it could be exactly the wrong
- 57:30place for you. And you know what, what I found
- 57:36in this profession is that, you know, there are people that will
- 57:41give up what they value. Some some cases their integrity,
- 57:47some cases. You know what?
- 57:50They hold dear to themselves just because they're affiliated
- 57:54with X y&z brand and it does not make for a very happy person.
- 58:02It does not make For a very happy family.
- 58:04It does not make for a very happy existence, you know.
- 58:09And and you know I have I can I can say wholeheartedly that, you
- 58:14know, I've learned my lesson and you know, the thing that I've
- 58:19that I've come to realize is that when it's your time, and
- 58:25when, you know, when it's your time, when when the recognition
- 58:28is there and that opportunity presents itself, then you should
- 58:36go ahead and explore it. but as you are learning and building
- 58:44and evolving as a coach as a mentor, Do your job.
- 58:50Do your job to the best of your ability because, you know, there
- 58:56is a mean one point in my in my thinking, I was wondering, well,
- 59:00if I go I take a step down. I've been to three power, five
- 59:05schools have been Associated three, power, five schools.
- 59:09I'm now going to a group of high school.
- 59:11Does that mean that the power 5 is just going to stop thinking
- 59:14that I exist? Are they going to stop realizing
- 59:17that? I'm still the same coach?
- 59:20I still have the same credentials I can still recruit
- 59:24with the best of them. And you know this this I mean
- 59:28this is my seventh year here at UTSA and I've realized that the
- 59:33pride that I take in what I do every single day and the fact
- 59:38that in some people's eyes, there's no way on God's green
- 59:41earth. That UTSA should be doing what
- 59:43they're doing. That means more to me, right,
- 59:48that, that means more to me, and it gives me like a ground swell
- 59:52of Pride that I can make mountains of them out of
- 59:57molehills, right? So, you know, I know that the
- 1:00:04recognition and the peer, my peers, recognize what I've done.
- 1:00:08And I think at the same time, you know, there's a, there's
- 1:00:12probably a reason why that opportunity hasn't Yet and I
- 1:00:15just need to be patient. Right?
- 1:00:18When you start trying to force the issue and you start to, you
- 1:00:21know, now you're start, you're walking into minefields.
- 1:00:24Now you're walking into situations, where, you know,
- 1:00:28people that thought you were loyal or thought that you were,
- 1:00:32you know, committed to a certain program to a certain situation.
- 1:00:37Now they're going to start looking at you differently and
- 1:00:40you know, know when you're going to need those people to step in
- 1:00:45and go. Yes.
- 1:00:47It's I'm this young man has done his duty by all means.
- 1:00:52He needs to go ahead and run a program, you know?
- 1:00:55So that's that's my as how I look at that question.
- 1:01:00I hope is to not too long-winded, but that's what I
- 1:01:04think. Everything on the LLC is too
- 1:01:06long-winded, dog. How do you manage balance?
- 1:01:20Career advancement process with the be where your feet are
- 1:01:25mantra. Do your job and build
- 1:01:31relationships. Honestly, I've never really
- 1:01:37understood why it's so difficult for people to figure this one
- 1:01:41out. This is not one of these super
- 1:01:44complicated issues. At least it shouldn't be If you
- 1:01:50sign up to do a job, do it, and do it to the best of your
- 1:01:54ability. Hmm.
- 1:01:56And if you want to be seen in a light that gets you, the next
- 1:02:02job or a better job, as you see it as you perceive it, then you
- 1:02:09better be building relationships while being excellent, ask, for
- 1:02:12example, if you're not doing those two things, there is no.
- 1:02:18Career advancement and by the way you suck at where you're at
- 1:02:25but it's really not that complicated.
- 1:02:27I think people make it complicated or it seems to be
- 1:02:31complicated because ultimately they're not very happy with who
- 1:02:35they are. They're not happy with their
- 1:02:38path. They're being shunned to their
- 1:02:41perspective. The world is against them, their
- 1:02:45perspective. So if you're not happy with
- 1:02:47yourself, I mean that's A different issue.
- 1:02:50That's a different question. But do your job and build
- 1:02:54relationships? That's simple.
- 1:02:59As big league. Would you like to go?
- 1:03:02Would you like me to go? You can decide that.
- 1:03:09Did you see that? Everybody pay attention, that is
- 1:03:11known as a Parry or a Dodge. I'll go.
- 1:03:19And definitely, we need to put some money in the budget.
- 1:03:22For some Robitussin for this, this panel.
- 1:03:24We the most confident people like it got a bunch it.
- 1:03:32Yeah, it's all right. All right, I had to sink it out,
- 1:03:43you know, this could be forever. So I'm not going to do that.
- 1:03:48I think the first thing that has always befuddled me is people
- 1:03:55who are just hell bent on these preconceived paths, like, I'm
- 1:04:04gonna do this for two years, then do this.
- 1:04:08Then do that. I have always been befuddled by
- 1:04:13that because there is literally no linear path.
- 1:04:18At all in the world, the realm of coaching.
- 1:04:22So to create some mythical linear path in your mind is just
- 1:04:29bizarre and so misguided that. I don't even understand how we
- 1:04:33even start on that Journey. But let's be clear many, many
- 1:04:38people start on that Journey which is how we get to this kind
- 1:04:41of question. I think it's really, really
- 1:04:46simple. Make Everything You Touch better
- 1:04:50than it was when you found it. And do every single job that you
- 1:04:54are blessed to have to your very, very best ability if you
- 1:04:58do those two things, right? If you master the space that you
- 1:05:03are currently occupying, You couldn't possibly chart yourself
- 1:05:11to move forward or on, or up as fast as it will happen. right,
- 1:05:20if you If you're at a d to school and you rake, the very
- 1:05:27best pits and run the most well-run meets possible, Right?
- 1:05:33Some power 5 school is going to come to one of your Meats one
- 1:05:38day. Take notice of the fact that man
- 1:05:42I go to all these big meets of these big schools and everything
- 1:05:45is always delayed but every time I come here whenever I need to
- 1:05:48get done gets done like get in get out and I'm out.
- 1:05:53I need to get across to do right as a Yahoo doing that.
- 1:05:58Yep. You know if you know if you get
- 1:06:03menial tasks that you think have nothing to do with your level 1
- 1:06:082 and 3 certificates and how great a coach you are.
- 1:06:13It's your ability to master Dominate and appreciate menial
- 1:06:18tasks, that proved that when I give you a bigger task.
- 1:06:24If we give you a bigger and much more responsible job, I know
- 1:06:27you're going to be successful at that because you worked as hard
- 1:06:31as you could it making sure that everybody's Pockets were right.
- 1:06:35Making sure that there are the right.
- 1:06:37Number of listen. This is track coaches.
- 1:06:40Okay? Yes.
- 1:06:43We are. You give if you give any track
- 1:06:47coach on this panel and I know we are subsection of all track
- 1:06:52coaches. If you give any anybody on this
- 1:06:55panel, a packet that has 40 numbers and 157 pins.
- 1:07:03We got issues, right? If you can, if you can't count
- 1:07:07to 4 and multiply it by the number of numbers, you gave me,
- 1:07:11we have a problem. And if you're not willing to put
- 1:07:15them in groups of four, you just going to dump 157 pins in my
- 1:07:21packet. I know how you're going to be.
- 1:07:23When I if I'm thinking of hiring you, I know that you were going
- 1:07:27to cut Corners rush through things and not be thorough
- 1:07:31because you're trying, On to the next thing.
- 1:07:34I know that sounds menial. I'm telling y'all, this is how
- 1:07:37it works. People notice especially track
- 1:07:43coaches and our petty cells. We notice everything.
- 1:07:48And the people who are Masters at the little things, the things
- 1:07:53that actually end up being important like a time schedule.
- 1:07:58Right. The people that Master those
- 1:08:01things, are the ones that people respect and want to hire and
- 1:08:09want to suggest for jobs. Because let's be clear, folks.
- 1:08:12This is the part that people don't really get most times.
- 1:08:18You get a job because somebody way above your pay grade suggest
- 1:08:23it to somebody else way above your pay grade that you would be
- 1:08:27good for that job. It is not because you put it on,
- 1:08:33you know, on, you know, eggshell white card stock and you have
- 1:08:39the most beautifully laid out resume that ain't it?
- 1:08:48Who you know, and what they will say about you when you're not
- 1:08:52standing, there is the most important part of advancement in
- 1:08:57coaching and gentle in general. So if you don't do exactly what
- 1:09:02Clyde said, which is build relationships, not false ones,
- 1:09:06not fake ones, not take, you know.
- 1:09:08Oh, well everybody knows Solutions and everybody calls
- 1:09:11solutions for job. I better go become his friends.
- 1:09:14Good luck with that. All of us.
- 1:09:18See you coming from 700 miles away.
- 1:09:23You're not really trying to get to know your potential Mentor,
- 1:09:27you are just trying to get on somebody's resume, get somebody
- 1:09:32on your resume because you think that's going to fast-track your
- 1:09:34career. It will fast-track your career
- 1:09:38left. So for me, my simple one is if
- 1:09:47you if you're not good at low a I'm not going to promote you to
- 1:09:52EE. So at that doesn't mean like,
- 1:09:57you know, if you're, if you don't see that everybody has to
- 1:10:00start a division three or any. I that's not what I'm saying.
- 1:10:04But look, you could be a power 5 assistant, but you don't have a
- 1:10:08group yet. You know, you respond to that.
- 1:10:14Probably dictates how soon you get a group.
- 1:10:20Right. Like, whether you're always at
- 1:10:23what I'm going to do what I do, I'll even have nobody to coach,
- 1:10:26like I don't even know what I'm out here for.
- 1:10:28If that is your attitude. Yeah, you're going to stay right
- 1:10:30there. Do you want to lose your job?
- 1:10:36Yes, that is very true. That is very true.
- 1:10:40So for me the way I see this question is I think the first
- 1:10:46part is a mandatory, I think you have to be exactly where your
- 1:10:50feet are and be dominant in that space.
- 1:10:54If you have any expectations for career advancement, And I think
- 1:10:59to think otherwise is insane. I think to build off of what
- 1:11:06Clyde was saying and what everyone said in essence is
- 1:11:12being where your feet are and dominating that space doing it
- 1:11:15100% doing it to your best abilities, all those things.
- 1:11:18But in the second breath and the exhale of it, or whatever you
- 1:11:22want to say, it is being prepared for the opportunity
- 1:11:26because you can't close yourself off to say, well, I need to
- 1:11:29finish here or I'm not ready for that or Why like that's not what
- 1:11:35I wanted to do. So the opportunities, the
- 1:11:38opportunities, the opportunity, and you have to be ready and
- 1:11:40open to do it wherever it is. Whoever it's with and whatnot
- 1:11:45because what you didn't think was for you could have been the
- 1:11:48best thing for you at the same time, so it's just being open to
- 1:11:52the opportunity for it to happen and allowing those things to
- 1:11:54happen. To a statement that was made
- 1:11:59earlier than remember who made it.
- 1:12:00So, I apologize. The, I'm not sure where the
- 1:12:03linear thinking came from, and what not, it's Miss
- 1:12:07misconceiving this perceiving hands on who you're talking to.
- 1:12:11And when the goal, Your or your objectives thinking that that's
- 1:12:18how it has to be. And yeah we want to make our
- 1:12:21goals tangible and we get them very specific but there are
- 1:12:25certain things that you don't have controllable over so those
- 1:12:28can't be the specifics. So writing inaccurate gold is
- 1:12:30how do we get some data to how we get too many you're thinking?
- 1:12:34I have to do this at this school to get to the school.
- 1:12:39Why and why that time you know so are you are you have to do is
- 1:12:46study the rather some of these people that are in the positions
- 1:12:48you think you want to know that that's nonsense.
- 1:12:51Just saying right? No absolutely and it's funny,
- 1:12:55you know, out of a very selfish, thought not recently, I said to
- 1:13:01myself and this is coming from a motherly standpoint, not so much
- 1:13:05a professional standpoint but it also could be applied there.
- 1:13:07I just wanted to to like, put a GoPro on me and just from wake
- 1:13:13up to lay down, you know, because I've had this and this
- 1:13:18isn't a comment of a humble brag or anything just literally said.
- 1:13:23I, I'm trying to get where you are.
- 1:13:25I'm trying to be who you are. And I'm like, not everybody is
- 1:13:31built for this and it's not because I'm strong, and it's not
- 1:13:34because I do this done the third, it's because it's a law
- 1:13:37that encompasses and it keeps a lot.
- 1:13:43To maintain what this is what this is doing right now is a
- 1:13:46lot. So make your own ear own, do
- 1:13:51your own and that's how you be where your feet are and that's
- 1:13:55how you create your own happiness.
- 1:13:58So anyways, that's my My two cents.
- 1:14:04So back to Our Roots, I like it. This is a some really good
- 1:14:08stuff. So the info that you all came
- 1:14:11for because this is going to be the best info.
- 1:14:13The night is Lamar from afar, as would you rather?
- 1:14:18And let's be real. So right?
- 1:14:25I mean, you waited an hour and 15 minutes for this, so, here we
- 1:14:29go. You ready, sir?
- 1:14:32Yes, ma'am. Would you rather eat a worm or
- 1:14:35like a slug? Either one, not if the second
- 1:14:42one's not even a thought, but would you rather get caught
- 1:14:48picking your nose or farting? Farting hundred percent.
- 1:14:59Would you rather be the size of an elephant or the size of an
- 1:15:02ant? An elephant.
- 1:15:08Would you rather go to the Hall of Fame dinner or the Bowerman
- 1:15:11dinner? That is the what that is?
- 1:15:18Why we're asking a question Bowerman dinner?
- 1:15:25But do be serving that the prime rib that is that is clutch.
- 1:15:31That is usually why, why reason I are running to the front of
- 1:15:34the line, experiment starts playing the song, Would you
- 1:15:39rather forget your sandals or your towel at the beach?
- 1:15:49I think I would rather my naked if I forgot my time.
- 1:16:23What a Michael Jackson, bubbles? I'll take a robot, please.
- 1:16:30Oh my goodness. All right.
- 1:16:32Gentlemen, the would you rather as yours?
- 1:16:36Oh my God, this is gonna be so mad.
- 1:16:52They work, they work. I have a, I have a good one for
- 1:16:58you, sir. Since we are almost to November
- 1:17:03and Convention is upon us. Would you rather?
- 1:17:10Continue to embarrass people in Spades at the convention or
- 1:17:15throws already retired. You said or retire or retire?
- 1:17:22Listen, I have already made this clear.
- 1:17:27We are retired and we will be hosting an LLC Spades Tournament
- 1:17:35for which we will. We will have on our Duke Tango,
- 1:17:38Matt wigs and be making fun of people but we are done playing
- 1:17:44Spades and ruining lives. Because listen, yeah, I can't
- 1:17:52I'm trying to do good in the world and us play spades against
- 1:17:57other track and field coach has in this country has been doing
- 1:18:00nothing but harm to Young moldable Minds.
- 1:18:06This is true. But may I throw this out?
- 1:18:10See see here, I don't know, may I throw this out because it was
- 1:18:14it was I was watching. You know, I got some downtime,
- 1:18:20right? I was watching The Karate Kid.
- 1:18:25I was watching The Karate. Kid, we sweep.
- 1:18:28Are you sleeping? Your leg?
- 1:18:30No, no, no, no, no. But in one of the think it was
- 1:18:35seasoned, I think it was a, the movie, the third movie, the
- 1:18:40tournament happened, and all Daniel had to do, was meet in
- 1:18:46the final, so, if we host the tournament and somebody wins it,
- 1:18:53What they could win. Is a shot at the throne. and
- 1:18:59then, at least they earned this Listen to me.
- 1:19:05If you win the playoffs, you don't get to play Tom.
- 1:19:09Brady for all seven of his rings.
- 1:19:13I understand that it be a 23 Championship, it's not, you
- 1:19:17know, the crown, I have progressed mentally Beyond being
- 1:19:26a player in these games any longer Okay, lack the last time
- 1:19:33we played, if I remember correctly, I said specifically,
- 1:19:37I don't even want to do this, I don't want to be here but y'all
- 1:19:42keep pulling the cape and poking the bear.
- 1:19:46So this this is what's gonna happen.
- 1:19:50That is that is a, that is a partial truth because the last
- 1:19:55time we played, I was the one that said I don't I want to do
- 1:20:01this and I God we got drug carrying screaming into
- 1:20:10thrashing. Another group of young people.
- 1:20:13This is true. I'm just this is done.
- 1:20:16I want to uplift, I want to help.
- 1:20:19I want to say hey don't play that.
- 1:20:21Don't play that. All right.
- 1:20:28Would you rather be the legendary coach, or a legendary
- 1:20:32athlete? Man, I'm not even gonna lie to
- 1:20:38you. I very rarely very, very rarely
- 1:20:44show any signs of any legitimate Eco.
- 1:20:48Like, that's just really not how I'm wired and all three of, you
- 1:20:51know, me very well in that regard.
- 1:20:52But in this one, this question is very easy to me.
- 1:20:56I would much rather be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar than John Wooden.
- 1:21:05Okay. Like I have the utmost respect
- 1:21:09for the coaching profession, obviously, but if to make my
- 1:21:13choices are to be, you know, insert, like look at my, if I'm
- 1:21:19going to be a viable choice, between being Michael Johnson,
- 1:21:21acquired heart, I'll take my chances.
- 1:21:25Okay. Question.
- 1:21:29That was a really good question. I actually like that one a lot.
- 1:21:34All right. Well you made it.
