Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Changing or Eliminating a Habit of the Physical Consciousness
Transcript
- 0:00The physical consciousness is very much driven by habit,
- 0:04routine, and fixed response patterns.
- 0:08We can observe this in our eating routines, our sleep
- 0:11routines, and other habitual actions.
- 0:15The mind and the vital can influence the physical
- 0:17consciousness through programming routines or habits
- 0:20into it, Essentially training the physical to respond to
- 0:25specific stimuli and act in a certain manner when presented
- 0:30with the situation. All forms of physical exercise
- 0:34and repetitive activity are building new habits into the
- 0:38physical consciousness. When we undertake a diet or
- 0:42begin fasting or take up bodybuilding or swimming or any
- 0:47other activity that requires physical training, we are
- 0:51working to break establish patterns of caloric intake or
- 0:55timing of meals, or find ways to upgrade the responsiveness of
- 1:00the physical being to achieve what it is being called upon to
- 1:04do, etcetera. Once we understand both the
- 1:08nature and the physical consciousness with respect to
- 1:12its habitual patterned action and the manner in which the mind
- 1:16and vital can train or retrain the physical nature to acquire
- 1:19new habits, we can actually initiate various changes in the
- 1:25physical consciousness. If we look at any form of
- 1:29training, we understand that it takes precise instruction from
- 1:33the mind, repetition of the action, and time for the body to
- 1:38form a new habit of response. Similarly, if we look at
- 1:43breaking or changing an existing habit, such as set mealtimes,
- 1:48snacking routines, or any other physical habit, we see that this
- 1:53also takes consistency and time to bear fruit.
- 1:59Recognizing this process, we have both a negative and a
- 2:03positive method to put into practice.
- 2:06To the extent that the mind or the vital nature approves and
- 2:10supports the habit, it will continue and actually be
- 2:14reinforced. Even if we give into it time
- 2:18after time, it should not be with consent, but with a patient
- 2:23and quiet will to reduce or eliminate the unwanted response
- 2:28or habit. For example, one has a craving
- 2:32for some snack, say a piece of chocolate, 1 feels the urge to
- 2:37get a piece of chocolate. The mind observing this impulse
- 2:42can turn down the request, or at least can send forth a directive
- 2:47to the physical that it really does not want to support this
- 2:51request. If the urge is strong and
- 2:54repetitive, it may overpower the mental will for a time, but
- 2:59eventually the mental will can prevail and change the habit.
- 3:05Many people who formerly consumed meat diets have
- 3:09switched to vegetarian or vegan diets.
- 3:11In this way, Even if they gave in to an impulse or craving at
- 3:16some point along the way, the direction and force was set and
- 3:21eventually they succeeded. On the positive side, the mind
- 3:26and vital can send affirmative statements to the physical
- 3:29being, encouraging it to do positive things that support the
- 3:34aspiration, improve the health and well-being of the body, and
- 3:40make it more capable of achieving the intended result.
- 3:44In such case, it is important for the mind and vital to
- 3:48recognize the process and the time and not injure the body
- 3:52through taking it far beyond its current limits, rather using the
- 3:57process of repetition over time to inculcate a new set of
- 4:03responses and habits. Trioro Bindo writes quote.
- 4:09You should not allow yourself to be discouraged by any
- 4:12persistence of the movements of the lower vital nature.
- 4:16There are some that tend always to persist and return until the
- 4:20whole physical nature is changed by the transformation of the
- 4:24most material consciousness. Till then their pressure recurs,
- 4:30sometimes with a revival of their force, sometimes more
- 4:34dully, as a mechanical habit take from them all life force by
- 4:40refusing any mental or vital ascent.
- 4:43Then the mechanical habit will become powerless to influence
- 4:47the thoughts and acts and will finally cease and Quote
