- 0:06Speaker 3: The world's original podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 4: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:20Speaker 2: It's Eric. Eric.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Eric Scalavino.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's Evan. Andy Hart.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And Brian Murray.
- 0:25Speaker 5: Oh, God.
- 0:25Speaker 6: Eric. You know I'm screwed up. They need to do
- 0:27Speaker 6: something to thin out that gator population. Gators are everywhere.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I thought the pythons were the big problem.
- 0:32Speaker 5: I could tell the Patriots are coming up with 35
- 0:34Speaker 5: to 6 lines.
- 0:35Speaker 6: Here's what I need from this game. Have a better
- 0:37Speaker 6: showing than last week. That's all right now I'm asking.
- 0:40Speaker 5: Looking forward to that pick tomorrow. You know, I was
- 0:42Speaker 5: talking to Brian Hoyer yesterday.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I don't know if you know that.
- 0:45Speaker 1: He's talking to Brian.
- 0:47Speaker 5: You know, when I was letting him in because he
- 0:48Speaker 5: doesn't have a badge.
- 0:50Speaker 7: The rust is what gets me. Every time I see
- 0:52Speaker 7: it in the parking lot, I just don't know how
- 0:54Speaker 7: it rusts.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Well, he lets it sit out Wednesday sometimes.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's by the ocean. It's all that salt air.
- 1:00Speaker 1: The other part of this, earmuffs for you.
- 1:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:02Speaker 5: These kids never fail because we always told them, no, no, no, no.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You won.
- 1:06Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:07Speaker 1: That was a great job.
- 1:07Speaker 5: You finished in 28th out of 32.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Great job. Did you do your best? Next year's schedule stinks.
- 1:12Speaker 5: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Presented by Toyota.com. Patriots unfiltered.
- 1:18Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:21Speaker 6: It is Thursday here at Gillette Stadium. The gang's all here. Evan, Paul, me, Deuce, Alex,
- 1:27Speaker 6: and Matt in the booth. And we turned the page
- 1:31Speaker 6: yesterday to the Buffalo Bills. We'll continue that conversation. Talk
- 1:35Speaker 6: about the current status of injuries or participation for the Patriots, including...
- 1:41Speaker 6: One notable addition to the participation report.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And then, of course, we will get to the picks
- 1:47Speaker 2: later on in the show.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So we've got to hurry.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Because I don't think it was a good week for.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Most of us. No, it wasn't for most of you.
- 1:54Speaker 2: For most of us. Most of us. You know, some
- 1:58Speaker 2: of us, you know.
- 2:00Speaker 7: Work on Sundays?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Some of us actually have the book and, you know, well.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Didn't he used to make fun of me for not
- 2:08Speaker 5: watching the games? Some of us like football, he used
- 2:11Speaker 5: to say to me when I would complain about the
- 2:13Speaker 5: Thursday night streaming games and whatnot.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Anyway, so what's up, everybody? What's up?
- 2:21Speaker 6: I guess the main headline today is the addition of
- 2:25Speaker 6: Drake May on the injury report with a right shoulder.
- 2:29Speaker 6: although he was full participation in practice. Thank goodness. So
- 2:32Speaker 6: that's interesting, especially with all the questions that came after
- 2:37Speaker 6: the game about, you know, do you have a sore shoulder?
- 2:42Speaker 6: And the way he answered that, and now all of
- 2:45Speaker 6: a sudden he's on the injury report.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So I don't know if.
- 2:49Speaker 6: It's anything to be concerned about, small C or big C,
- 2:52Speaker 6: but it is what it is.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We're just pulling up the rest of it here.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Run it down. Barmore, Gonzalez, and Moses were all out.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Did not participate. Limited were Ellis, Gilliam, Draymond Jones, Eli Raritan, Schooler,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and Woodson. And Drake May was the lone full participant.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Gonzalez is in there for the shoulder, too.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:13Speaker 2: And I have a theory.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He got hurt.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Overall. About the shoulder injuries. Because it seems like a
- 3:20Speaker 6: lot of people are getting shoulder injuries.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And I think.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's a thing to do.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I think the.
- 3:26Speaker 6: These shoulder pads are getting smaller and smaller every year,
- 3:29Speaker 6: and I wonder if that's contributing to it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Honestly.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Well, in Draymond Jones' case, he got landed on by...
- 3:33Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:34Speaker 2: If this is right.
- 3:35Speaker 5: It looked like it was an awkward... He was trying
- 3:37Speaker 5: to recover the fumble. I think he got caught in
- 3:40Speaker 5: an awkward position.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And got landed on. It also seemed like it was
- 3:42Speaker 1: just a hit, a hard hit.
- 3:44Speaker 7: Yeah, he came down and hit the running back.
- 3:47Speaker 2: You know, back in the day.
- 3:49Speaker 1: In your day, no one got shoulder pads.
- 3:52Speaker 6: No, in the early 2000s, like, you know, Troy Bowne,
- 3:55Speaker 6: for example, was wearing big shoulder pads. You know, and
- 3:57Speaker 6: I just wonder if, I know the guys like him
- 4:00Speaker 6: smaller because it gives you more mobility and everything, but.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I wonder if that, you know, contributes to it a
- 4:06Speaker 2: little bit.
- 4:07Speaker 9: Perhaps.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I mean, I saw, I mean, the Woodson one to me,
- 4:09Speaker 1: you know, was obvious. I mean, it was just meeting
- 4:11Speaker 1: the running back with Rico Dowdle in the hole. I'm like, bang,
- 4:14Speaker 1: it was a hard hit. Gonzalez, same kind of thing, though.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So I don't know. Maybe, maybe you're onto something.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, your shoulder's not meant to do what
- 4:21Speaker 2: they do.
- 4:21Speaker 1: You still got those power pads, you know, those are
- 4:23Speaker 1: the ones that, you know.
- 4:24Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, like, Barmore, I think, happened because he
- 4:26Speaker 7: tried to make a tackle with one arm, and, like,
- 4:29Speaker 7: it probably popped a little bit when he made the tackle.
- 4:32Speaker 7: So I don't, like, I don't think it's all just, like,
- 4:35Speaker 7: lowering the shoulder into people, you know, that is causing them, like,
- 4:39Speaker 7: but maybe.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 6: All right. Anyway, so that's your participation report for the Patriots.
- 4:45Speaker 6: Barmore's probably, well, he does have something because he was.
- 4:49Speaker 2: In and out of the game. Yep.
- 4:51Speaker 7: I mean, who knows? Like if it wasn't a blowout,
- 4:53Speaker 7: how much he would have played in the fourth quarter,
- 4:54Speaker 7: but he didn't play.
- 4:55Speaker 5: But he did return to the game initially after getting hurt.
- 4:59Speaker 5: And you're right. Maybe he would have played the whole
- 5:01Speaker 5: way had the game been competitive.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And, you know, Moses has the foot. That's a real thing.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:06Speaker 6: So that right side of the offensive line, we're going
- 5:09Speaker 6: to have to keep an eye on that.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I think it's in flux right now, don't you think?
- 5:13Speaker 1: It is, and that's where their best pass rusher most
- 5:15Speaker 1: often lines up, too. I just saw the report that
- 5:18Speaker 1: they signed Matt Pryor off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad,
- 5:23Speaker 1: who's a versatile, experienced guy. He's played 11 years. He's
- 5:26Speaker 1: played everywhere but center, so that's where you're at. You
- 5:29Speaker 1: lose two guards, and some of the other guys haven't developed.
- 5:32Speaker 1: You're really razor thin with the depth, and if Morgan
- 5:35Speaker 1: Moses can't go this week, it might be Caleb Lomu
- 5:38Speaker 1: for a start. We'll see today. I mean, I think
- 5:40Speaker 1: Wednesday practices you always temper it a little bit because
- 5:42Speaker 1: you know those are sometimes days that Mike Vrabel gives
- 5:44Speaker 1: guys off. So it could be injury maintenance, but we'll see.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And I might be guilty of that.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I know you brought up Lomu yesterday, and I kind
- 5:52Speaker 5: of look at Moses. If he's listed inactive, then I'll
- 5:55Speaker 5: be like, oh, okay, he's not playing this week. It's
- 5:57Speaker 5: kind of like Carlton Davis. He was inactive in week two.
- 5:59Speaker 10: It'd be interesting to see how many.
- 6:02Speaker 11: Like, look at every single injury report going back to
- 6:04Speaker 11: last year to see Wednesdays and Morgan Moses.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I think he was out every one of them.
- 6:09Speaker 7: Wednesdays is, like, usually for this regime is, like, if
- 6:12Speaker 7: you have a lingering.
- 6:13Speaker 10: Get right day.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Banged up, you know, dinged up injury from the game,
- 6:18Speaker 7: then they usually hold you out on Wednesday.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you're here, but you're in the training room.
- 6:21Speaker 7: So I usually don't overreact to any of these injuries
- 6:25Speaker 7: until at least Thursday.
- 6:26Speaker 10: When, Thursday or Friday? When do you start to care
- 6:29Speaker 10: about the injury report?
- 6:29Speaker 7: Usually Thursday.
- 6:31Speaker 5: If they're DNPs on Thursday, too, then there's a legitimate
- 6:35Speaker 5: chance they're not going to play. And you guys are
- 6:38Speaker 5: poring over the details, especially you, Ev, because you write
- 6:41Speaker 5: up the injury stuff on the weekends.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 5: I thought, wasn't it more often than not with Moses
- 6:48Speaker 5: not practicing on Wednesdays, were they... Always listed with an injury?
- 6:52Speaker 5: Or were they usually listed as.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Oh, I thought it was just.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Usually, time to time. Like, it would kind of fluctuate
- 6:59Speaker 7: or change. He had an injury last year that he
- 7:03Speaker 7: played for.
- 7:04Speaker 5: But it did list an injury and not.
- 7:06Speaker 7: Last year, I think it was... If I have my
- 7:08Speaker 7: memory correct, it was his knee.
- 7:10Speaker 12: Okay.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And he.
- 7:12Speaker 7: I remember him telling us, like, I'm going to play.
- 7:16Speaker 5: This concerns me more because it's actually something that we
- 7:19Speaker 5: saw him dealing with.
- 7:21Speaker 7: If it's a true injury and there's something structurally wrong
- 7:25Speaker 7: with his body, then that's a different story. But these
- 7:29Speaker 7: bumps and bruises, he tends to play through them.
- 7:32Speaker 2: The Gonzo one.
- 7:34Speaker 5: is where Gonzo didn't really miss any time. Um, but
- 7:38Speaker 5: as soon as it happened, I do remember on Twitter,
- 7:40Speaker 5: people were, you.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Know, not people, Dr. Chow, who, you know, we got
- 7:44Speaker 1: a chance to program.
- 7:45Speaker 5: We got a chance to visit with down at the Superbowl, um,
- 7:48Speaker 5: or out at the Superbowl, I should say. And, uh,
- 7:50Speaker 5: you know, he said, you know, interesting one to keep
- 7:52Speaker 5: an eye on. He has a history of shoulder issues,
- 7:55Speaker 5: which is accurate. So the fact that he didn't practice
- 7:58Speaker 5: on Wednesday, um, It was a little bit of an
- 8:02Speaker 5: eyebrow raiser for me.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember when that happened.
- 8:04Speaker 6: And, you know, he got up really slow. Then he
- 8:07Speaker 6: was on the sideline. He was kind of like, you know,
- 8:10Speaker 6: doing this. The broadcast showed, like, Jim Whalen and the trainers.
- 8:14Speaker 2: He didn't get a lot of attention from the trainers.
- 8:16Speaker 13: So, but.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Let's keep an eye on him because we certainly need him.
- 8:20Speaker 5: He was supposed to, he was supposed to, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 5: do his Wednesday at the podium and then sort of
- 8:26Speaker 5: a last minute thing. They came in and said that
- 8:28Speaker 5: he would not be coming to the podium. Now we
- 8:30Speaker 5: did see him in the locker room, but, um, he
- 8:33Speaker 5: obviously didn't practice.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I just think today's the key day. Cause last week
- 8:37Speaker 1: we saw Woodson come back on a Friday and still
- 8:39Speaker 1: didn't play. You know, sometimes I think they bring guys
- 8:41Speaker 1: back on a Friday just to get them going a
- 8:43Speaker 1: little bit. So, We'll see today. I mean, anything's possible
- 8:46Speaker 1: with these guys. I mean, I would say this is
- 8:48Speaker 1: the kind of matchup where, like, to Paul's point, even
- 8:51Speaker 1: if Morgan Moses doesn't practice this week and he's feeling
- 8:53Speaker 1: good on Sunday, it might be, you know, worth giving
- 8:56Speaker 1: that veteran a chance to get out there and give
- 8:58Speaker 1: it a go against, you know, Craig Rousseau and a
- 9:00Speaker 1: tough D.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah. That's a challenge.
- 9:03Speaker 6: On the Buffalo side, you know, there was some talk
- 9:05Speaker 6: about a knee maybe for Josh Allen, but I was
- 9:11Speaker 6: listening to one of Paul's shows this morning and they
- 9:13Speaker 6: had their version of behind enemy lines. And they had
- 9:16Speaker 6: a Buffalo guy, I think Syracuse.com. And, uh, he was saying, no,
- 9:20Speaker 6: he looked fine in practice.
- 9:21Speaker 14: No.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 7: He wasn't on the injury report. Uh, Christian Benford was, uh,
- 9:25Speaker 7: Keon Coleman has an ankle. Uh, those were the two
- 9:28Speaker 7: ones that stood out to me.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Did not practice.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Uh, but Benford is bit, you know, he, he got
- 9:32Speaker 7: hurt in the game and he, uh, he was in
- 9:34Speaker 7: a walking boot, I guess, after the game based off
- 9:36Speaker 7: the reporters there. Um, So he might have an injury,
- 9:41Speaker 7: like a legitimate injury.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think he's going to play based on
- 9:44Speaker 5: some of the stuff I've read. They expect him to
- 9:46Speaker 5: miss some time.
- 9:47Speaker 2: 142 straight games for Josh Allen.
- 9:50Speaker 7: When you're 6'5, 240 pounds.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I don't care how big you are in football. That's
- 9:54Speaker 2: pretty remarkable.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah, especially the hits you take. I mean, it's impressive.
- 9:59Speaker 1: When we talked about it yesterday, at some point, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 1: I've been kind of waiting. I mean, not like. evil
- 10:04Speaker 1: Patriots feeling like you're going to get hurt. But you
- 10:07Speaker 1: watch enough of him, the number of hits he takes,
- 10:09Speaker 1: it just seems kind of inevitable at some point that
- 10:12Speaker 1: he's going to get hurt.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Has Barth admitted that Josh Allen can play football?
- 10:14Speaker 1: You know what?
- 10:15Speaker 7: I thought he was holding back a little bit today
- 10:17Speaker 7: because he doesn't want to get the Bills Mafia on
- 10:21Speaker 7: his case. So I kept on poking and poking, and
- 10:25Speaker 7: eventually we got him fired up by the end. But
- 10:27Speaker 7: he was... I think he was trying to be careful
- 10:29Speaker 7: about what he said. He didn't want the Bills fans swarming.
- 10:33Speaker 7: And so he said one of his predictions before the
- 10:38Speaker 7: season was that the Bills were going to regress. and
- 10:41Speaker 7: that they were going to lose more games than they
- 10:43Speaker 7: did last year. And so I said, well, they're 3-0, Alex.
- 10:47Speaker 7: And he was like, yeah, but it's early. It still
- 10:50Speaker 7: could happen. It could happen. I hope it happens. I
- 10:53Speaker 7: was like, that's good talk radio because you're married to
- 10:56Speaker 7: the tape and you're not wrong yet. So you don't
- 10:58Speaker 7: have to admit that you're wrong yet because you're not
- 11:00Speaker 7: wrong yet, even though it's very much looking like you're
- 11:03Speaker 7: going to be wrong. So, you know, maybe a little
- 11:06Speaker 7: bit of.
- 11:06Speaker 2: They were 14-3 as well last year.
- 11:08Speaker 7: No, they won 11 games. Oh, really?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I thought they were right nipping at our heels.
- 11:13Speaker 6: No?
- 11:14Speaker 2: No.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Well, I think they might be better than they were
- 11:18Speaker 2: last year then.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Don't say that to Alex.
- 11:21Speaker 5: I think they're better. I didn't necessarily think that coming
- 11:24Speaker 5: into the season, but what I've watched offensively, they look
- 11:27Speaker 5: better to me.
- 11:27Speaker 6: No, I think there was that Buffalo old-time writer voice
- 11:32Speaker 6: of the Bills who got in trouble because he wrote
- 11:35Speaker 6: something to the effect of, the one thing that could
- 11:38Speaker 6: hold the Bills back this year is first-year head coach
- 11:40Speaker 6: Joe Brady.
- 11:41Speaker 2: And they didn't like that. Possibly true. No one knows.
- 11:45Speaker 6: But so far, I've been impressed with their offense. And
- 11:48Speaker 6: then you go back to how that McDermott leaving and
- 11:53Speaker 6: then keeping the job in the house with Joe Brady
- 11:58Speaker 6: tells me that Josh Allen wanted Joe Brady.
- 12:01Speaker 7: Well, their offense is the same.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 6: I think that from what I was listening to, Joe
- 12:11Speaker 6: Brady seems to be a little bit more wide open,
- 12:13Speaker 6: a little bit– Particularly toward the end of games, he
- 12:18Speaker 6: doesn't get it. Well, so far, they haven't really been
- 12:20Speaker 6: in tough spots. But he doesn't get as tight as McDermott.
- 12:23Speaker 1: The RA.
- 12:24Speaker 2: He's a little bit looser and a little bit more calm.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Like his demeanor?
- 12:27Speaker 2: His demeanor and how he handles the game.
- 12:29Speaker 7: From a stylistic standpoint and a play calling standpoint, they're
- 12:32Speaker 7: pretty much mirror images of what they were like.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Whatever it is, I think Josh Allen likes this guy. Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 7: That's apparent. I mean, I don't think he'd be the
- 12:41Speaker 7: head coach if he didn't like him.
- 12:42Speaker 10: I know.
- 12:42Speaker 11: That would be like the most sought after job in
- 12:44Speaker 11: football if they opened it up.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I just, I'm interested in Paul's thing. How do you
- 12:49Speaker 1: sustain it? I mean, and I think what Bill Simmons has,
- 12:51Speaker 1: like the Ewing theory, what was that? Well, like you
- 12:53Speaker 1: trade a good player and it's kind of a coach
- 12:54Speaker 1: version of that where, you know, you, you go from
- 12:57Speaker 1: one guy to a new guy, there's some new energy
- 12:59Speaker 1: in the building and everybody's feeling good, but you know,
- 13:01Speaker 1: the NFL season is such a grind and how are
- 13:03Speaker 1: they going to, you know, deal with some of that adversity?
- 13:05Speaker 1: You know, maybe it starts this week with, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 1: the Patriots. I saw Jim Leonard's comments about Drake May, which,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, pretty good. It was like, you know, you
- 13:12Speaker 1: can tell he's swimming in it right now. And, You know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: good players come out of this stuff. You just hope
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's not this weekend. So, interested to see what he
- 13:20Speaker 1: kind of has dialed up with this defense to, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: maybe challenge Drake. And I'm sure they're all thinking the
- 13:24Speaker 1: same thing we're kind of thinking, where just don't let
- 13:26Speaker 1: them run the ball and put it on that quarterback
- 13:28Speaker 1: and keep him where he's been.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Listen, if I was them, I'd go, I'd just go
- 13:32Speaker 6: at him. And if we get burned early, we get burned.
- 13:35Speaker 6: But I'm going to test this guy. I'm going to
- 13:38Speaker 6: put pressure on him immediately and try to, end this
- 13:42Speaker 6: game quickly.
- 13:43Speaker 7: Yeah, you don't want to pressure a lot. They're more
- 13:45Speaker 7: of a structure-based defense where they kind of play coverage
- 13:49Speaker 7: and sort of win with structure and sound rules and stuff.
- 13:53Speaker 7: I think they're a lot more multiple than what they
- 13:57Speaker 7: were with McDermott. McDermott kind of played his brand of
- 13:59Speaker 7: defense and did it at a pretty good level for
- 14:02Speaker 7: most of his time in Buffalo. This defense, I think,
- 14:05Speaker 7: has a little bit more deeper menu. They have more
- 14:09Speaker 7: in their bag, so to speak, of what they can do.
- 14:13Speaker 7: I think that that's what they're trying to do. They're
- 14:15Speaker 7: trying to be a little bit more multiple, a little
- 14:17Speaker 7: bit more exotic, and have a little bit more of
- 14:20Speaker 7: a change-up than what they have at McDermott. We'll see
- 14:24Speaker 7: if it sticks. It's flashed.
- 14:26Speaker 6: No reason why they can't change it for this game
- 14:28Speaker 6: and just try something, and if they have to adjust,
- 14:30Speaker 6: they adjust.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I don't know. I would put the pedal to the
- 14:36Speaker 2: metal right off the bat.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, that would be, you know, we make
- 14:40Speaker 5: a lot, at least I've made a lot of that
- 14:42Speaker 5: Sean Payton thing about keeping May in the pocket and
- 14:45Speaker 5: not letting him run. I would make it a huge
- 14:48Speaker 5: priority if I were any defensive coordinator facing the Patriots
- 14:51Speaker 5: to try to hit him as early in the game
- 14:53Speaker 5: as possible because it seems like that's what bothers him
- 14:56Speaker 5: the most is when he gets sort of, you know,
- 15:00Speaker 5: he gets it in his head early that he's taken
- 15:03Speaker 5: some hits. I mean, he's not any different than most quarterbacks.
- 15:07Speaker 5: You know, quarterbacks don't like to get hit. You know,
- 15:09Speaker 5: there's a news bulletin. It's no fun. So that, I
- 15:13Speaker 5: agree with Fred. I don't think I would get too
- 15:14Speaker 5: aggressive with it. I would make them, you know, stay
- 15:18Speaker 5: in your structure and whatever, but that would be a priority.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Getting after him early and see if you can make
- 15:23Speaker 5: him uncomfortable early and make him think, oh no, here
- 15:26Speaker 5: we go again. You know, as opposed to, he has
- 15:28Speaker 5: a couple of good drives early and Now you're dealing
- 15:31Speaker 5: with 2025 Drake May instead.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a big thing for me this week. I
- 15:34Speaker 1: think I've seen enough Josh Allen games now to know
- 15:37Speaker 1: that it's a roller coaster against him, and he is
- 15:39Speaker 1: going to make plays, and you have to have a
- 15:42Speaker 1: degree of mental toughness to go toe-to-toe with him and
- 15:44Speaker 1: be willing to say he's going to get his. They're
- 15:47Speaker 1: going to make some plays. James Cook's going to bust
- 15:48Speaker 1: off a big run. I want to see the Patriots
- 15:51Speaker 1: be able to handle that adversity better because right now
- 15:53Speaker 1: this scares me a little bit. If Josh Allen comes
- 15:55Speaker 1: out and goes, bing, bang, boom, eight plays, touchdown, 7-0
- 15:59Speaker 1: right out of the gate, Is this Patriots team going
- 16:02Speaker 1: to talk tail, or are they going to say, all right,
- 16:04Speaker 1: our turn, let's make some plays?
- 16:05Speaker 6: For the Patriots offense, especially with what's going on on
- 16:10Speaker 6: that right side, would you, on a high percentage of
- 16:14Speaker 6: your plays, spread things out and.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Run your offense that way?
- 16:21Speaker 6: And maybe try to give Drake May a little bit
- 16:24Speaker 6: more time, but obviously get the ball out of his
- 16:27Speaker 6: hands as quickly as possible.
- 16:28Speaker 2: But spread... Spread the Bills' defense out.
- 16:31Speaker 7: We were talking about that on Catch-22 because I think
- 16:34Speaker 7: everybody's writing their, like, how do you fix the Patriots'
- 16:38Speaker 7: offense think pieces right now. And just looking at the data,
- 16:42Speaker 7: you know, they're... They're ninth in under center rate, but
- 16:45Speaker 7: they're 31st in EPA per play from under center. So
- 16:49Speaker 7: they're one of the worst under center offenses in football.
- 16:52Speaker 7: And we can talk about why, but it seems to
- 16:56Speaker 7: me like just from a statistical perspective, and it's still
- 16:59Speaker 7: only three games, but they're at least better from shotgun,
- 17:03Speaker 7: especially on like a per play basis. than they are
- 17:06Speaker 7: from under center. And I, you get to a point
- 17:09Speaker 7: in the season when you start to get, you know,
- 17:11Speaker 7: four or five games into the year where you kind
- 17:13Speaker 7: of know what you're good at and you know what
- 17:14Speaker 7: your personnel and what your strengths are and things like that.
- 17:17Speaker 7: And this team might just not be built to be
- 17:20Speaker 7: heavy under center and a heavy run game from under center,
- 17:23Speaker 7: that just might not be a strength of theirs. So
- 17:27Speaker 7: I think the bills, uh, regardless of the bills, I
- 17:29Speaker 7: think that, you know, in general, uh, putting Drake may
- 17:32Speaker 7: in the shotgun more, it might be a good approach.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And I say run from that formation too.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:37Speaker 7: I mean, we were talking on, on catch about, you know, it,
- 17:41Speaker 7: running the ball into lighter boxes by spreading them out.
- 17:44Speaker 7: You know, I go back to Travion Henderson's touchdown against Pittsburgh.
- 17:47Speaker 7: They were in shotgun. They spread out the Steelers defense.
- 17:50Speaker 7: They got them into a six man box and they
- 17:53Speaker 7: hit a 40 yard run against it. Like those are
- 17:55Speaker 7: the types of things that I think they are probably
- 17:57Speaker 7: thinking about of like, okay, what can we do? Well,
- 18:00Speaker 7: what are we good at? And you know, they're 18th
- 18:03Speaker 7: and EPA per play from shotgun. And that's what Drake
- 18:06Speaker 7: may turn the ball over. So, like, if you don't
- 18:09Speaker 7: stop turning the ball over, like, the efficiency is going
- 18:11Speaker 7: to obviously be even better. So I think that that's,
- 18:14Speaker 7: you know, clearly where we're trending right now is that
- 18:17Speaker 7: they can still be a pretty explosive offense out of shotgun.
- 18:20Speaker 7: It's the under center stuff that's killing them. And that's
- 18:22Speaker 7: a lot of first down, you know, and then you're
- 18:24Speaker 7: in second and long, third and long, and here we are.
- 18:26Speaker 6: Okay.
- 18:28Speaker 1: There's our guy.
- 18:28Speaker 2: What are you pointing at? Oh, Paul Perreault on TV.
- 18:31Speaker 5: A lot of long pauses yesterday.
- 18:33Speaker 7: They didn't let you talk a lot yesterday.
- 18:36Speaker 5: It had nothing to do with lead.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I was good.
- 18:39Speaker 2: That was tough.
- 18:40Speaker 6: That was tough. I was listening to a little bit
- 18:43Speaker 6: toward the last 15 minutes.
- 18:44Speaker 5: I was good.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Tap dancing a little bit. I was good. No, I was.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I was perfectly fine for one of those rare
- 18:52Speaker 5: times of me not inserting myself into the conversation. But
- 18:56Speaker 5: in all seriousness, like, you know, you're right. Well, the
- 18:59Speaker 5: way we started the show, like that's the that's the
- 19:01Speaker 5: story is Drake May showing up in the injury report.
- 19:04Speaker 5: No one knows, you know, what the actual truth behind
- 19:07Speaker 5: the matter is. So it's leading to a lot of speculation,
- 19:10Speaker 5: which is fine on my shows. not so fine for
- 19:13Speaker 5: me individually.
- 19:15Speaker 6: And people say, oh, maybe they just put him on
- 19:17Speaker 6: there to screw with the media.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Don't screw with the injury report because you can get
- 19:21Speaker 2: in trouble with the league doing that.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I don't think it has anything to do with the media.
- 19:25Speaker 2: No?
- 19:26Speaker 5: I don't. All right.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Well, even giving him a baked-in excuse, I'm not buying
- 19:30Speaker 2: that either. All right.
- 19:33Speaker 6: 855-PATCH-500 is the hotline. Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address.
- 19:40Speaker 6: We got a lot of emails.
- 19:41Speaker 2: We got a lot of calls stacked up.
- 19:43Speaker 6: People need to get it in before we get to
- 19:45Speaker 6: their picks at about, let's see, we're doing our show
- 19:48Speaker 6: to 1 now, so about 1230.
- 19:51Speaker 2: So let's start with Herm and DC. What's up, Herm?
- 19:58Speaker 1: Herm!
- 19:59Speaker 2: Oh, come on. I didn't make you wait that long.
- 20:02Speaker 2: All right, you're done. Yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 20:07Speaker 2: He's done. I like it. Yeah. How about Zach in Utah?
- 20:10Speaker 2: What's up, Zach?
- 20:12Speaker 3: Hey, guys.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Can you hear me?
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:17Speaker 14: I just got, like, three quick, sort of quick things.
- 20:20Speaker 14: I just want to ask where Kwani is on the
- 20:25Speaker 14: post-game show. And then I want to talk about this
- 20:29Speaker 14: last game. There's, like, a lot of pessimism, but I
- 20:32Speaker 14: felt like we moved the ball well. For, like, the
- 20:35Speaker 14: most part. We had, like, three drives, three or four
- 20:38Speaker 14: drives with, like, 10 or 11 plays just not scoring right.
- 20:42Speaker 14: And then the last thing is about Elliot Wolfe and
- 20:45Speaker 14: just how he keeps having, like, I feel like he's, like,
- 20:49Speaker 14: getting no flack for, like, anything. Like, he has only
- 20:54Speaker 14: had one good draft. He decides to get Romeo Dobbs
- 20:59Speaker 14: over Steph Diggs. I just don't get why he's not
- 21:05Speaker 14: getting his back for building a good and competitive team.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Well, listen, like you said, last year was a good draft.
- 21:14Speaker 2: We'll see. This year still has to play itself out.
- 21:20Speaker 5: Draft doesn't look as good in year two as it
- 21:22Speaker 5: did in year one. Just saying.
- 21:26Speaker 7: I mean, they're still going to get Campbell, Craig Woodson,
- 21:29Speaker 7: And I would say that Travion Henderson is still a
- 21:32Speaker 7: useful player. Maybe he's not a star player, but he's
- 21:35Speaker 7: still going to be in a platoon and be a
- 21:37Speaker 7: productive player.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I think you have players.
- 21:39Speaker 5: I'm not sure that they look as good as they
- 21:40Speaker 5: did at this time last year. You know what, Henderson, Wilson, Williams.
- 21:43Speaker 6: Well, right now they don't, but like I said, let
- 21:46Speaker 6: it play out. I think you're getting to know these
- 21:48Speaker 6: players now. You didn't have to let it play out
- 21:50Speaker 6: last year, I guess.
- 21:50Speaker 1: No, you're getting to know them. You're getting a full
- 21:53Speaker 1: sample size now of what they are.
- 21:55Speaker 2: That's my point.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I mean, I'm concerned about the drafts. I just think, like,
- 21:59Speaker 1: the clock is ticking. And we heard from Mike Frabel
- 22:01Speaker 1: this summer in year two, we don't have great depth
- 22:03Speaker 1: on this roster. How do you get great depth? You
- 22:05Speaker 1: draft well. You know, you acquire players. We saw it
- 22:08Speaker 1: again today. They had to go grab somebody off a
- 22:10Speaker 1: practice squad. It's another. I mean, off the top of
- 22:12Speaker 1: my head, I can't tell you how many guys weren't
- 22:14Speaker 1: here in training camp that are now presently on the
- 22:17Speaker 1: team and going to be required to contribute.
- 22:19Speaker 5: To this team.
- 22:19Speaker 1: They're going to be hitting double digits, right?
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yeah. It's close. So I just, you know, they've got
- 22:24Speaker 1: to build out this depth. That's just such a critical thing.
- 22:27Speaker 1: And I like the star players of it. And I
- 22:28Speaker 1: love Elliott Wolfe's aggressiveness whenever a good receiver has come available.
- 22:32Speaker 1: It seems like they're in the mix and they're kicking
- 22:34Speaker 1: the tires on them. And, you know, they did a
- 22:36Speaker 1: great job acquiring A.J. Brown and, you know, giving up,
- 22:39Speaker 1: be willing to give up a first round pick to
- 22:41Speaker 1: give Drake May that kind of talent. So it's great
- 22:45Speaker 1: to talk about the talent. But then when we talk
- 22:46Speaker 1: about the depth, like I think that's where you sustain excellence.
- 22:50Speaker 1: That's where you are able to, you know, we saw
- 22:53Speaker 1: it for 20 years and that's probably impossible to recreate that.
- 22:55Speaker 1: But you guys know the players that emerged and suddenly
- 22:59Speaker 1: became contributors and injuries would happen. A guy would step in,
- 23:02Speaker 1: you know, Ty Law gets hurt. Asante Samuel steps in,
- 23:05Speaker 1: gets his opportunity. And now he, you know, like those
- 23:07Speaker 1: kinds of continuity things happen frequently that allowed you to
- 23:10Speaker 1: stay competitive. And what we all want is this team
- 23:13Speaker 1: to be a consistent competitor with Drake May at the
- 23:16Speaker 1: helm and, And it's hard to see you being able
- 23:18Speaker 1: to build that kind of program when you're saying, well,
- 23:20Speaker 1: we've got one or two guys every draft. Like, you
- 23:23Speaker 1: need more. You need a draft where you hit a
- 23:24Speaker 1: bunch of those kind of players.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the Elliott Wolfe stuff is because most
- 23:30Speaker 7: people think the buck stops with Mike Frabel. So, like,
- 23:33Speaker 7: you know, I understand that Elliott Wolfe has the title.
- 23:35Speaker 7: And I'm not saying he doesn't do anything, but, like...
- 23:38Speaker 7: When it comes to the drafts and when it comes
- 23:40Speaker 7: to player personnel and stuff like that, I think most
- 23:43Speaker 7: people look at it and say, well, the person to
- 23:47Speaker 7: blame for all of it is Mike Vrabel. And I
- 23:49Speaker 7: think day three draft picks, too, part of that's developing them.
- 23:53Speaker 7: Once they get here, you also have to coach them
- 23:55Speaker 7: and develop them, too. you know, it's not, it's obviously
- 23:58Speaker 7: a huge part of his identifying, but development is a
- 24:01Speaker 7: big part of it too. So I think it all
- 24:03Speaker 7: goes like, it's all, you know, they like to say
- 24:05Speaker 7: it's like kind of that nucleus of him and Cowden
- 24:08Speaker 7: and stretch and Wolf. And like all of them kind
- 24:11Speaker 7: of share in the responsibility when it comes to roster building.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I just, I mean, I, I, I can't lie. I mean,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I think the dress have looked largely similar, similar to
- 24:19Speaker 1: me and the best players they've gotten have kind of
- 24:22Speaker 1: been by default because that, you know, like Drake may,
- 24:25Speaker 1: falls in their lap. Christian Gonzalez falls in their lap.
- 24:27Speaker 1: They can take Will Campbell. They're there.
- 24:30Speaker 2: They take him.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Those guys, I think, have been pretty good, but the
- 24:32Speaker 1: farther you get away from that first round, the harder
- 24:34Speaker 1: and harder it is to find players that are contributing
- 24:36Speaker 1: right now.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Okay. Let's go to Owen in Amden. What does that say? A-M-D-E-N?
- 24:42Speaker 2: What's Amden? What's up, Owen?
- 24:45Speaker 1: How's it going?
- 24:47Speaker 4: The Patriots offensive line has been struggling, and they've sunken
- 24:51Speaker 4: so many resources into it. Big free agent in Vera
- 24:53Speaker 4: Tucker and two first-round picks at tackle. They seem to
- 24:57Speaker 4: like smaller athletic offensive linemen, which doesn't really fit the
- 25:02Speaker 4: rest of their offense. They like big-bodied receivers. They have
- 25:04Speaker 4: a big-bodied running back. Offensive line is the last place
- 25:08Speaker 4: on the offense I would want to be small and undersized.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Do you think they need to readjust the way they
- 25:12Speaker 4: look for offensive linemen?
- 25:15Speaker 2: Okay. I'm not sure of the answer to that. Are
- 25:19Speaker 2: they that much smaller than most?
- 25:21Speaker 6: I know there's some behemoth offensive lines, like the Eagles
- 25:24Speaker 6: have a big one.
- 25:26Speaker 7: So I would say there's nothing wrong with identifying those
- 25:30Speaker 7: players as the type of players that you want if
- 25:34Speaker 7: you're running a scheme that marries the offensive linemen that
- 25:37Speaker 7: you're drafting.
- 25:38Speaker 2: If you're doing zone run game or something like that. Right.
- 25:42Speaker 7: If you're an outside zone team... heavy outside zone team,
- 25:46Speaker 7: you want more athletic guys because you're moving laterally across
- 25:49Speaker 7: the field and you have to reach blocks and you
- 25:51Speaker 7: have to get out in space and move. If you're
- 25:53Speaker 7: going to run duo or lead or things up the
- 25:58Speaker 7: gut at the defense, then you usually want Mike on
- 26:02Speaker 7: when he was on your offensive line, road graders, you
- 26:04Speaker 7: on road graders. So, I think that that's a bigger
- 26:09Speaker 7: picture conversation, and I'm delicately tipping around, that you need
- 26:12Speaker 7: to have of, like, what kind of scheme do you
- 26:15Speaker 7: want to be? And does that scheme marry up with
- 26:18Speaker 7: the players that you're drafting to play on the offensive line?
- 26:20Speaker 6: Okay, so just looking at it from what they have
- 26:23Speaker 6: and what they've chosen, do you think they want to
- 26:26Speaker 6: be this outside zone team, or do they want to
- 26:28Speaker 6: be road graders?
- 26:29Speaker 2: And if they want to be road graders, did they
- 26:31Speaker 2: do it right?
- 26:32Speaker 7: I think that they want to be... a really good
- 26:35Speaker 7: pass blocking team.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:37Speaker 7: Cause I think they want Drake may to be the
- 26:39Speaker 7: focal point of the offense. And I think that they
- 26:41Speaker 7: want him to be, uh, you know, protected. And so
- 26:45Speaker 7: they have drafted guys like Campbell and guys like low
- 26:49Speaker 7: moon guys like Jared Wilson, because typically more athletic offensive
- 26:53Speaker 7: linemen are also better pass blockers. The other thing I
- 26:57Speaker 7: think they want to do is move the pocket more.
- 27:00Speaker 7: And if you're going to move the pocket, well, not
- 27:02Speaker 7: only do you need to have the wide zone runs
- 27:04Speaker 7: to move the pocket off of, but you also need
- 27:06Speaker 7: to be able to have the offensive lineman be able
- 27:08Speaker 7: to move the pocket. So like, I think all of
- 27:10Speaker 7: these things that I actually asked Elliot Wolf about this
- 27:13Speaker 7: at the draft after they drafted Caleb Lomu, when we
- 27:15Speaker 7: had him on the show and he's, those are the
- 27:18Speaker 7: two things he pointed to were pass blocking, being an
- 27:21Speaker 7: emphasis and being a priority is number one. The number
- 27:24Speaker 7: one thing they look for in their offensive lineman is
- 27:27Speaker 7: the ability to pass block. That's the most important thing
- 27:29Speaker 7: to them. And then number two, you know, he talked
- 27:32Speaker 7: about having, you know, the ability to be a little
- 27:34Speaker 7: bit more, you know, wide zone and moving pocket heavy, but,
- 27:38Speaker 7: which also takes athletic offensive linemen. But if you're going
- 27:41Speaker 7: to do that again, like running duo and running lead
- 27:46Speaker 7: with the fullback and running power and running these plays
- 27:51Speaker 7: where guys need to move people on the line of
- 27:53Speaker 7: scrimmage to get run game success, that's not a marriage,
- 27:59Speaker 7: in my opinion.
- 27:59Speaker 6: Yeah, so if you're looking at this offense so far,
- 28:02Speaker 6: I would say they kind of have a mixed identity,
- 28:06Speaker 6: and they really haven't found their identity yet.
- 28:09Speaker 5: I would say the second part of that is true.
- 28:12Speaker 5: What can they hang their hat on that they've done
- 28:14Speaker 5: well offensively through three games? There's really not a lot
- 28:18Speaker 5: that you could say. I mean, I'm sure that Evan
- 28:20Speaker 5: could pour over all the numbers and find something that
- 28:24Speaker 5: spikes EPA.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Well, I did. I mean, we were talking about Gilliam yesterday.
- 28:31Speaker 6: And we looked at the numbers, and his participation is
- 28:35Speaker 6: actually less than it was in Buffalo.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Not much more.
- 28:38Speaker 5: It was about the same.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Just a little bit less.
- 28:41Speaker 6: If it had gone up, then we could say, oh,
- 28:43Speaker 6: they want to be more fullback heavy, lead, that type
- 28:47Speaker 6: of thing.
- 28:47Speaker 2: But we haven't seen that yet.
- 28:49Speaker 7: So the question is, with Reggie Gilliam, is he just
- 28:53Speaker 7: a little bit of a different kind of fullback player?
- 28:56Speaker 7: than a Jakob Johnson or a James Devlin that's going
- 29:00Speaker 7: to meet the linebacker in the B-gap and clean them
- 29:03Speaker 7: out and open the hole for the running back. if
- 29:06Speaker 7: you're in a little bit, like I think fullbacks can
- 29:08Speaker 7: play in a lot of different formations. And like, I
- 29:11Speaker 7: think looking at him at, in Buffalo, you know, they
- 29:13Speaker 7: ran that wine back play with him a lot where
- 29:15Speaker 7: he was like coming across the formation and then up
- 29:18Speaker 7: to the linebacker with like a head of steam going
- 29:20Speaker 7: up to the linebacker. And it was like a little
- 29:22Speaker 7: bit more of like a motiony sort of play that
- 29:26Speaker 7: wasn't just like, we're just going to send the hammer
- 29:29Speaker 7: through the B gap.
- 29:30Speaker 15: Right.
- 29:31Speaker 7: So like I, you know, to Paul's point about like,
- 29:34Speaker 7: things spiking, and when I, you know, try to find
- 29:37Speaker 7: anything that they're good at offensively, like their shotgun offense
- 29:41Speaker 7: has actually been pretty explosive so far. You know, they're
- 29:44Speaker 7: fifth in yards per play from shotgun. They're averaging almost
- 29:46Speaker 7: seven yards per play in shotgun. They're exposed to play
- 29:49Speaker 7: rates significantly higher in shotgun than it is under center.
- 29:53Speaker 7: I said this to Alex, like, I'm not a huge
- 29:55Speaker 7: fan of being like the Eagles, like that are in
- 29:58Speaker 7: shotgun 90, 95% of the time. I don't think that
- 30:01Speaker 7: that's the best way to live, but for this particular
- 30:03Speaker 7: football team, it might be. And that's like something that
- 30:06Speaker 7: they are going to have to decide. Like, is it
- 30:08Speaker 7: time on task and we're going to get better at
- 30:10Speaker 7: being an under center team? Or is that just, are
- 30:12Speaker 7: we not equipped to be a better under center team
- 30:14Speaker 7: and we need to change?
- 30:16Speaker 6: Well, but, but I remember when we first got Gilliam,
- 30:19Speaker 6: you know, we were all thinking, Oh, it'll be nice to,
- 30:22Speaker 6: maybe have that guy in front of Ramondre Stevenson or
- 30:25Speaker 6: Henderson where they don't get hit immediately in the backfield.
- 30:28Speaker 6: Like maybe they get one or two yards before they
- 30:31Speaker 6: get contact and Gilliam would be leading the way. But
- 30:34Speaker 6: you're saying that that's not what he does.
- 30:36Speaker 7: But it just might, it's not that he doesn't do that.
- 30:39Speaker 7: It's just the schemes in which he's being asked to
- 30:41Speaker 7: do it.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:42Speaker 7: You know, like I would just to use a comparison,
- 30:45Speaker 7: like I would say Reggie Gilliam is a little bit
- 30:47Speaker 7: more Kyle use check than he is James Devlin.
- 30:49Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 7: And when you watch Kyle Juszczyk block for the 49ers,
- 30:52Speaker 7: they're not in the dot and just handing the ball
- 30:54Speaker 7: off and running it down people's throats. He's coming in motion.
- 30:58Speaker 7: He's coming across the formation. He's adding on to the
- 31:01Speaker 7: end of runs. Like, those are things that they do
- 31:04Speaker 7: with Kyle Juszczyk that I think is a little bit
- 31:06Speaker 7: more stylistically a fit for Reggie Gilliam. Like, even just
- 31:09Speaker 7: looking at him. Like, he's not, you know, he's a
- 31:12Speaker 7: big dude, but he's not like a sledgehammer. So I
- 31:17Speaker 7: still think he can lead the way for the running backs,
- 31:20Speaker 7: and they can be productive in that way. I think
- 31:22Speaker 7: that they're in the feeling out process of how exactly
- 31:25Speaker 7: he fits into the bigger picture.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Because so far it's kind of the same as it
- 31:28Speaker 1: looked with Jack Westover playing fullback last year.
- 31:31Speaker 6: Ellen, Wisconsin, what a season, right? I remember back in
- 31:35Speaker 6: 2017 or so. Brady was having a rough stretch by
- 31:39Speaker 6: his standards. I remember later Gronk coming out and saying
- 31:43Speaker 6: he wanted to make 12-12 again.
- 31:45Speaker 2: I remember that. Who's going to step up and help May?
- 31:48Speaker 6: If the throw is a little off at some point,
- 31:50Speaker 6: a guy needs to step up and catch it anyway.
- 31:52Speaker 6: Maybe then May can start feeling a little more confident
- 31:56Speaker 6: and start playing better.
- 31:57Speaker 2: That would help. You mentioned I heard you on the
- 32:00Speaker 2: radio with Hollins in the back end of the end zone.
- 32:03Speaker 2: If he makes that catch, maybe.
- 32:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and that was just one that really stood out
- 32:07Speaker 5: to me. I'm thinking that's a play that's designed for A.J. Brown.
- 32:12Speaker 1: A.J.
- 32:12Speaker 5: Brown probably makes that catch. No disrespect to Matt Collins.
- 32:15Speaker 5: I'm not trying, this is not like, Matt Collins has
- 32:18Speaker 5: done a more than serviceable job sort of filling in
- 32:21Speaker 5: as the pseudo number one guy, right? He's been pretty efficient.
- 32:25Speaker 5: When they target him, for the most part, it's been caught.
- 32:28Speaker 5: But that's a play that I think could have been made,
- 32:30Speaker 5: and I think maybe a guy like A.J. Brown would
- 32:33Speaker 5: have made it.
- 32:34Speaker 7: Outside of the taunting penalty, I think Matt Collins has
- 32:37Speaker 7: been their best offensive player.
- 32:40Speaker 5: I'm not killing Matt Collins. That's not the reason why
- 32:43Speaker 5: the passing game has failed.
- 32:43Speaker 1: He's the one guy that's.
- 32:44Speaker 7: Actually doing what they are paying him to do right now.
- 32:47Speaker 1: It's on the quarterback. That hits on something I feel
- 32:50Speaker 1: this week, that it's more to me than just making
- 32:52Speaker 1: the plays you should make. I need somebody this week
- 32:55Speaker 1: to make a play that they shouldn't make. And I
- 32:57Speaker 1: mean that in a good way. Something you're not expecting.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Somebody to just make a play... teammates celebrate, we got
- 33:03Speaker 1: some energy, we got some juice, you know, and, and
- 33:07Speaker 1: it does, I mean, even if it's early and it's
- 33:08Speaker 1: not like necessarily change, it's just a good start. And
- 33:12Speaker 1: you feel like, Hey, somebody is going to make a
- 33:14Speaker 1: play and pick the rest of their teammates up rather.
- 33:16Speaker 1: And you know, it goes beyond just, well, the ball
- 33:18Speaker 1: hit him in the hands and he didn't catch it. Like,
- 33:20Speaker 1: of course, like you have to make those plays, but
- 33:22Speaker 1: you know, can Ramondre break a run where he makes
- 33:24Speaker 1: somebody miss or, you know, Travion again, like makes a
- 33:27Speaker 1: cut and, you know, breaks the tackle and, and makes
- 33:30Speaker 1: a big play. That kind of thing, to just give
- 33:33Speaker 1: the team, because if it's all on Drake and you
- 33:35Speaker 1: go into Buffalo and everybody's just sitting, all right, Drake,
- 33:37Speaker 1: time to kick it in gear, make some plays. I
- 33:40Speaker 1: think that's just going to put even more pressure on him.
- 33:42Speaker 1: I want to see this team step up and support
- 33:44Speaker 1: him across special teams. It could be special teams. It
- 33:47Speaker 1: could be big tackle, anything. Just get some positive energy
- 33:51Speaker 1: going right out of the gate because, like I said,
- 33:54Speaker 1: they come out, Josh Allen, score, nobody's making any plays.
- 33:59Speaker 1: I don't know if this team has the toughness to
- 34:01Speaker 1: get into that game again and to find it already.
- 34:03Speaker 5: When they're down. You know, in terms of this game,
- 34:07Speaker 5: I know my answer, but I'm stubborn. I think they're
- 34:11Speaker 5: three for three winning the coin toss and they've deferred
- 34:14Speaker 5: every time. Would you think about if you win.
- 34:16Speaker 1: It to take the ball?
- 34:18Speaker 3: No.
- 34:19Speaker 5: I would yeah that's why i said you guys already know.
- 34:22Speaker 7: That's a philosophical thing though like that for me too
- 34:25Speaker 7: like i i yeah i i believe in the whole
- 34:27Speaker 7: middle eight thing i think i do too like i
- 34:30Speaker 7: think they had it set up perfectly last week and
- 34:32Speaker 7: then drake made through the pick yep they had it
- 34:34Speaker 7: like they had they could have scored there gotten the
- 34:36Speaker 7: ball to start the second half score again and now
- 34:38Speaker 7: all of a sudden you take control of.
- 34:39Speaker 10: The game automatic with it last season too.
- 34:42Speaker 7: Yeah and but even if they were field goal 20
- 34:44Speaker 7: years like they could have yeah they could have gotten
- 34:46Speaker 7: back they could have just taken back control of the
- 34:48Speaker 7: game i i think that there's i love that that's
- 34:50Speaker 7: like one of my favorite belichick things i like it
- 34:53Speaker 7: is the middle eight i just like joe brady um
- 34:56Speaker 7: in the the home opener against detroit they won the
- 34:58Speaker 7: toss and he took the ball because he wanted to
- 35:00Speaker 7: use the juice.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Of the crowd and the electricity they went right down
- 35:03Speaker 5: scored seven nothing obviously they rolled they rolled the lions
- 35:06Speaker 5: that night but Just something like Deuce is looking for
- 35:10Speaker 5: a spark and something good to happen. Obviously, that can
- 35:13Speaker 5: backfire if you go three and out or worse.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Turn it over. I remember even a couple years ago,
- 35:19Speaker 1: they returned the opening kickoff. And I know they lost
- 35:21Speaker 1: that game. But you know what I mean? It's a
- 35:22Speaker 1: play like that that I just like to see. Let's
- 35:24Speaker 1: give us a little momentum. Let's not all just be
- 35:26Speaker 1: sitting around waiting for Drake. Other thing I'd just say
- 35:29Speaker 1: on that, it's like they've been so bad around the
- 35:30Speaker 1: half that that scares me. And it's like I'd rather,
- 35:33Speaker 1: if I'm going to give up some plays, I'd rather
- 35:35Speaker 1: do it in the first drive of the game to
- 35:36Speaker 1: Josh Allen. then say, oh, crap, we've got to close
- 35:39Speaker 1: him out at the end of the first half, and
- 35:40Speaker 1: then we've got to stop him at the beginning of
- 35:42Speaker 1: the second half. That seems challenging to me as the game,
- 35:45Speaker 1: and there's less runway to work with.
- 35:46Speaker 5: He's like the anti-Barth, huh? He just wants to know.
- 35:49Speaker 5: He's terrified. He's like under his covers watching Josh Allen.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I just think he's good.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Barth is like, don't worry, he's going to throw a pick.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Just watch.
- 35:56Speaker 2: What's your guys' and gals' philosophy on the toss in overtime?
- 36:02Speaker 5: Oh, I would kick in overtime. Take the second possession
- 36:05Speaker 5: so you know what you need.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Know what you need.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Plus, you've got an extra down. I just love what
- 36:09Speaker 1: you said. You know what you need. It's like being
- 36:11Speaker 1: down nine.
- 36:12Speaker 7: I would say that the extra down thing is probably
- 36:16Speaker 7: the most important thing.
- 36:16Speaker 1: The extra down.
- 36:17Speaker 7: It opens up fourth down. You have four downs at
- 36:21Speaker 7: that point. But the way that the first team is
- 36:23Speaker 7: doing it now, they are methodical on purpose. They're trying
- 36:27Speaker 7: to bleed as much clock as they possibly can because
- 36:29Speaker 7: it is only a 10-minute period. I hate that it's timed.
- 36:31Speaker 7: I don't understand it.
- 36:32Speaker 1: They need to make it 15. Why is it timed?
- 36:35Speaker 5: Because of what Evan's talking about. You can really control
- 36:40Speaker 5: the clock. Now, it's not easy to score in 10 minutes.
- 36:44Speaker 5: Because you've really got to get a touchdown if you're
- 36:49Speaker 5: going to do it that way. So it's not easy
- 36:53Speaker 5: to control the clock and ensure that you score. But
- 36:57Speaker 5: I would go second.
- 36:58Speaker 2: What if each team just gets five minutes?
- 37:01Speaker 7: I just wouldn't time it at all.
- 37:02Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 7: Like, in college, they don't... Never ending overtime. Well, in college,
- 37:07Speaker 7: they don't time it.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Like, you just... Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 7: It's serve for serve.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Until you fail.
- 37:12Speaker 7: You know? And, like, I just don't understand, like, the
- 37:15Speaker 7: obsession with it being timed.
- 37:17Speaker 5: I kind of agree with that.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I mean, football is a game of minutes.
- 37:23Speaker 7: I don't get it.
- 37:23Speaker 5: If you're ensuring both teams get a possession, then I
- 37:26Speaker 5: don't really see the need for the clock.
- 37:29Speaker 15: Right.
- 37:29Speaker 7: That's what I'm saying. You serve, I serve.
- 37:31Speaker 1: And we serve until someone loses. Would that change it
- 37:35Speaker 1: at all?
- 37:36Speaker 7: But in college, that would be game in the NFL.
- 37:39Speaker 7: If you score on the third possession in college, they
- 37:41Speaker 7: force you to go for two after a couple of
- 37:44Speaker 7: back and forths. Now, in the NFL, I think you
- 37:46Speaker 7: have to drive the whole field. Like, in college, they.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Yeah, 35.
- 37:49Speaker 7: Yeah, some 30, 25, something like that. But that, like,
- 37:53Speaker 7: that's college. Like, this is pro football. Like, you got
- 37:55Speaker 7: to drive the field. But, like.
- 37:56Speaker 2: 65 yards.
- 37:59Speaker 3: Yes.
- 38:00Speaker 7: But the... Yeah, like, still have the same, like, each
- 38:04Speaker 7: team gets a possession, the third possession is game, regardless of,
- 38:07Speaker 7: you know, if it's a field goal or a touchdown.
- 38:08Speaker 7: But the clock thing is silly. I mean, I guess
- 38:12Speaker 7: it bails out coaches from being dumb, but, like, how
- 38:15Speaker 7: many coaches go for two now? Like, if they have
- 38:18Speaker 7: the second possession and they score to get, you know,
- 38:21Speaker 7: and then they go.
- 38:21Speaker 5: Because there's no time. Like, New Orleans did it in
- 38:24Speaker 5: the opening week against Detroit.
- 38:26Speaker 1: They went for two. They scored second.
- 38:28Speaker 5: They went for two because.
- 38:30Speaker 7: They're not going to get the ball back.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Either that or you're going to tie or lose.
- 38:33Speaker 5: You can only basically tie or lose at that point. And,
- 38:36Speaker 5: you know, they went for the win, which I think
- 38:38Speaker 5: most guys, another reason why we like the second possession.
- 38:41Speaker 6: Ryan in Connecticut, I don't know ball well enough, but
- 38:44Speaker 6: Drake sometimes looks a little slow getting everything sorted out
- 38:47Speaker 6: at the line. We've seen a few delay of game penalties,
- 38:50Speaker 6: so I'm wondering, is some of that something the Patriots
- 38:53Speaker 6: could take off his plate by having Jared Wilson handle
- 38:56Speaker 6: more of the protection calls? Like some of the other
- 38:59Speaker 6: centers do, or is Wilson not really ready for that responsibility?
- 39:03Speaker 2: And along those same.
- 39:04Speaker 6: Lines, do you see any chance they move Wilson to
- 39:07Speaker 6: guard and play Ben Brown at center?
- 39:10Speaker 1: I don't see that yet. I think if you moved
- 39:13Speaker 1: Jared Wilson, you'd probably be moving him out of the lineup,
- 39:16Speaker 1: unless you get really desperate at it. At guard, I
- 39:18Speaker 1: don't think he's going back.
- 39:19Speaker 7: He was better last week at center. He had a
- 39:21Speaker 7: rough week against Pittsburgh, but they have some good interior guys.
- 39:24Speaker 7: So does Seattle. He was better last week. The whole
- 39:28Speaker 7: plate thing and this is... the quarterback controls the line
- 39:32Speaker 7: of scrimmage. In other systems, the center controls the line
- 39:35Speaker 7: of scrimmage. I'd say majority of systems, the center does it.
- 39:38Speaker 7: But that's not something in September that you can just
- 39:42Speaker 7: flip a switch and say, all right, Jared Wilson, now
- 39:44Speaker 7: this is your responsibility. That's your system. That's the way
- 39:48Speaker 7: that it's installed and the way that it's programmed from
- 39:52Speaker 7: the beginning. So at this point, that kind of is
- 39:55Speaker 7: what it is. there there's things that you could do
- 39:57Speaker 7: maybe to like simplify, uh, it for Drake may at
- 40:00Speaker 7: the line of scrimmage, but like to completely wholesale change
- 40:04Speaker 7: that element of how you run your off.
- 40:06Speaker 2: They've had two delays on offense so far.
- 40:09Speaker 7: Uh, they called a penalty to avoid one last week.
- 40:11Speaker 2: That counts.
- 40:12Speaker 7: Yeah. Or call the time out. But I think Morgan
- 40:15Speaker 7: Moses was kind of more of the culprit of why
- 40:17Speaker 7: they were slower line than Drake may.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Um, so yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 5: So they did have a delay after that long completion
- 40:25Speaker 5: to Romeo Dobbs in the Pittsburgh game.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:28Speaker 5: But I don't see that. That one to me isn't
- 40:31Speaker 5: about this operational kind of stuff. Sometimes on long plays,
- 40:35Speaker 5: big plays, it takes a while because it doesn't matter.
- 40:38Speaker 5: When the whistle blows, the play clock starts.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Whether you get one yard and everybody gets up and
- 40:43Speaker 5: is right where the ball is or you're 65 yards downfield.
- 40:46Speaker 5: Same amount of time you have to get the next playoff.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Yep.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Sometimes that happens on those plays.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Yep.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Let's see. Matt writes in from Mashpee. All right. 16-year
- 40:57Speaker 2: season ticket holder.
- 40:58Speaker 6: Discovered the show in 2024.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Haven't missed one since. Thank you.
- 41:04Speaker 6: From the ball-knower's perspective to Paul, begging for a car,
- 41:07Speaker 6: I love it all. My questions are as follows. It
- 41:11Speaker 6: seems to me, non-ball-knower perspective. that guys like McVay, Ben Johnson,
- 41:16Speaker 6: and Evans Boy in San Francisco are constantly innovating schemes
- 41:20Speaker 6: based on personnel, of course, but also to avoid predictability.
- 41:24Speaker 6: I've seen Josh change the offense over the years from
- 41:27Speaker 6: spread in the high-flying years to more QB runs with
- 41:30Speaker 6: Cam to a more basic scheme with Mack. And what
- 41:33Speaker 6: I view as a mix of all that is it's
- 41:36Speaker 6: all of a mix of all that with Drake. My
- 41:38Speaker 6: question is, do you think Josh has kept up with
- 41:41Speaker 6: the rest of the league on keeping his schemes fresh?
- 41:45Speaker 6: And is he simply too predictable, as many have stated?
- 41:48Speaker 2: That's his first question.
- 41:53Speaker 5: I hate the play-calling things. I always sort of push
- 41:56Speaker 5: back on that. I think right now they're not playing well,
- 41:59Speaker 5: and they're not executing what they're... There's plenty of times
- 42:03Speaker 5: that you look and you guys are showing us clips.
- 42:06Speaker 5: Mike and Evan are showing us clips of this play. Fred,
- 42:09Speaker 5: you had one earlier in the week where you saw
- 42:11Speaker 5: Trevion Henderson.
- 42:12Speaker 1: All by himself.
- 42:12Speaker 4: So.
- 42:13Speaker 5: No, I don't think the game has passed Josh McDaniels by.
- 42:16Speaker 5: I think he has a good offense. Are there different
- 42:19Speaker 5: offenses around the league that I might like more? Yeah, sure,
- 42:22Speaker 5: but maybe that's because it's more bells and whistles, and
- 42:25Speaker 5: I'm not a ball-knower, and I just sort of get,
- 42:29Speaker 5: you know, I guess intoxicated by all the different stuff. Oh, wow,
- 42:32Speaker 5: did you see that play? Like, I'm like a fan
- 42:34Speaker 5: that way. I kind of like some of that stuff.
- 42:36Speaker 6: And I know it's a combination of us not executing
- 42:40Speaker 6: and the other defenses blowing up plays.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:43Speaker 6: But there are plays that are there that we're just
- 42:46Speaker 6: not executing. And I just look at that Pop Douglas
- 42:50Speaker 6: wide open with Drake on the move and he misses him.
- 42:54Speaker 2: He overshoots him.
- 42:55Speaker 6: That's probably a touchdown if he hits that. And then
- 42:58Speaker 6: all of a sudden it's like, wow, great play call.
- 43:00Speaker 7: Well, that's the one play kind of wrinkle that they
- 43:03Speaker 7: brought to the table is the dash pass. And that's
- 43:06Speaker 7: exactly what that was.
- 43:06Speaker 2: But what I'm saying is like.
- 43:08Speaker 6: if you could just hit the ones that are hittable,
- 43:11Speaker 6: I don't think we'd be so concerned about Josh McDaniels
- 43:14Speaker 6: keeping up with the times because you'd see results.
- 43:17Speaker 11: I don't think you can discount the amount of penalties too.
- 43:20Speaker 11: And just turnovers that have ended really good drives where
- 43:23Speaker 11: they've had a lot of momentum, like give them two
- 43:26Speaker 11: of those turnovers back and how much flack is McDaniels getting?
- 43:29Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 43:31Speaker 1: I also wonder if, um, if there's differing philosophies across
- 43:34Speaker 1: the league as to how you build your offense over
- 43:37Speaker 1: the course of the season. And if to me, it
- 43:40Speaker 1: seems like Josh likes to build within season and, you know,
- 43:45Speaker 1: come out with something basic and then they start to
- 43:48Speaker 1: kind of build around it and they get to a
- 43:50Speaker 1: point now to other offenses, try to install more and
- 43:53Speaker 1: start from a higher place. You know, I, I don't know.
- 43:56Speaker 1: I'm just asking, like, is that a different philosophy?
- 43:59Speaker 7: I think it's more about what you spend your time on. So, like,
- 44:03Speaker 7: all my guys are spending their time on installing motion
- 44:06Speaker 7: packages and installing some of the things that I've said
- 44:09Speaker 7: that I would like to see more of out of
- 44:11Speaker 7: the Patriots. but their drop-back menus are not as big
- 44:15Speaker 7: as Josh's. So the Patriots might spend more time on
- 44:21Speaker 7: the drop-back passing game so that they have variety in
- 44:23Speaker 7: the drop-back passing game, whereas the West Coast guys are
- 44:26Speaker 7: spending time on installing the run game and the early-down stuff.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Because that's what it all feeds off of for them.
- 44:32Speaker 7: So it's really going all the way back to the spring.
- 44:36Speaker 7: What are you more... what do you think is important
- 44:41Speaker 7: to spend time on? Is it, you know, to me,
- 44:45Speaker 7: I prefer the guys that want to stay out of
- 44:47Speaker 7: third down and want to bypass third down completely by
- 44:51Speaker 7: having really good early down offense. To the Patriots, I
- 44:55Speaker 7: would say it's more that they want to have a
- 44:58Speaker 7: really deep bag of drop back passing so that they
- 45:02Speaker 7: can game to game, week to week, be game plan oriented.
- 45:05Speaker 7: This is a big split safety team. This is a
- 45:08Speaker 7: big man team. This is a big whatever team. And
- 45:11Speaker 7: we have answers to all of these things because we
- 45:13Speaker 7: have a library that we can pull from. The West
- 45:16Speaker 7: Coast guys kind of run what they run. So I
- 45:20Speaker 7: think that Ben Johnson's kind of in the middle. But
- 45:23Speaker 7: that's the biggest difference is if you want to be
- 45:27Speaker 7: those kinds of offenses, that starts in April. That doesn't
- 45:30Speaker 7: start in September. And so I think that's where we're
- 45:34Speaker 7: at right now with the Patriots. And I've said my
- 45:37Speaker 7: piece about this already.
- 45:38Speaker 1: I know another part of it to me, too, is
- 45:40Speaker 1: that when you heard last year when Josh was in
- 45:43Speaker 1: his bag and everybody was impressed with what he was doing,
- 45:48Speaker 1: all the defensive coordinators would talk about how much he
- 45:50Speaker 1: throws you, how many different packages you have to prepare for.
- 45:52Speaker 1: And you, you know, you have to be ready for
- 45:54Speaker 1: a lot of that stuff. And, you know, I just
- 45:55Speaker 1: wonder if they're like the defense, they're kind of limited.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Like they don't really like, yeah, you can go to
- 46:00Speaker 1: tight ends with a rookie tight end, or, you know,
- 46:03Speaker 1: you can spread it with these four wide receivers who
- 46:05Speaker 1: aren't great. You know, I just don't think there's a
- 46:07Speaker 1: lot of versatility to what he can do right now
- 46:10Speaker 1: as well. There's not, you know, I think in like
- 46:13Speaker 1: in a perfect world in my head, I'm thinking in
- 46:14Speaker 1: early spring, it's like, all right, Julian Hill, you have
- 46:17Speaker 1: a legitimate blocking tight end that can actually block, and
- 46:19Speaker 1: you have a fullback now. Back then, I thought that
- 46:22Speaker 1: would come in and make an impact like Devlin, and
- 46:23Speaker 1: he's not that kind of player, and maybe there's going
- 46:25Speaker 1: to be a different plan for him. But that was
- 46:27Speaker 1: the idea to me, was that we can spread him
- 46:29Speaker 1: out with A.J. Brown, we can go heavy with a
- 46:32Speaker 1: good blocking tight end and a real fullback, you know,
- 46:34Speaker 1: and those kind of... Those visions that I had of
- 46:37Speaker 1: this team have just evaporated.
- 46:38Speaker 5: And we're not even taking into account the pass protection,
- 46:41Speaker 5: which I think that they've devoted more personnel to in
- 46:44Speaker 5: the first three weeks than probably Josh would like.
- 46:48Speaker 7: Over 11% of their dropbacks right now have three or
- 46:51Speaker 7: less receivers in the routes.
- 46:53Speaker 5: That's a pretty big number.
- 46:54Speaker 2: It's a lot.
- 46:55Speaker 1: And so there's a tighter.
- 46:56Speaker 2: The.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Rounds have to be more tight.
- 46:58Speaker 7: The fact that I know that off the top of
- 46:59Speaker 7: my head. I'm just looking at what... That's what it is. Like,
- 47:03Speaker 7: they're leaving guys in to protect. It's seven-man pass protection.
- 47:06Speaker 7: It's the split-back thing. It's chipping. And all they're doing
- 47:09Speaker 7: is running three guys down the field and then releasing
- 47:12Speaker 7: guys into the flats as checkdowns as outlets for Drake May.
- 47:15Speaker 7: But they're not... Those guys aren't stressing defense. Like, they're
- 47:18Speaker 7: not pulling guys and they're not attracting coverage. They're just...
- 47:21Speaker 7: And so that's a big part of that is the
- 47:24Speaker 7: offensive line. And I've said it before, take the training
- 47:29Speaker 7: wheels off of Will Campbell. Will Campbell's been really good.
- 47:32Speaker 5: I called for that in the pregame, and then early
- 47:34Speaker 5: in the game I was like, yeah, forget about what
- 47:35Speaker 5: I said.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Didn't look great. Let's see what he looks like one-on-one.
- 47:41Speaker 7: But I think he's getting better.
- 47:43Speaker 5: I think he's improved.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't mean Campbell specific.
- 47:46Speaker 5: I just meant the line, you know, early in the
- 47:49Speaker 5: Jacksonville game, I thought there were some times I was like, okay,
- 47:51Speaker 5: here we go. And I was like, Mike, forget about
- 47:53Speaker 5: what I said.
- 47:54Speaker 7: Like this week, he's going to go up against Bradley Chubb,
- 47:57Speaker 7: who is way past his prime. Like you don't need
- 47:59Speaker 7: to chip and help to the left side, especially with
- 48:02Speaker 7: what's going on on the right side right now. So like,
- 48:04Speaker 7: just let's see if Will Campbell is actually taking the
- 48:08Speaker 7: year two leap. and stop treating them kind of with
- 48:12Speaker 7: kid gloves.
- 48:12Speaker 6: The other part of Matt's question is, I believe Evan
- 48:15Speaker 6: raised this last week, but why in the world is
- 48:17Speaker 6: the OC not sending Henderson out in the flat to
- 48:19Speaker 6: try and beat cover six zone coverage that has been
- 48:22Speaker 6: thrown at us? He showed some real flashes in his
- 48:24Speaker 6: senior year at Ohio State, catching the ball, and I
- 48:27Speaker 6: feel that this could open things up a bit for
- 48:30Speaker 6: the receivers.
- 48:32Speaker 5: So they have and they do, and he hasn't been
- 48:35Speaker 5: overly effective in the role as a Patriot. What he
- 48:38Speaker 5: did at Ohio State, love it, mean it, but he
- 48:42Speaker 5: hasn't really shown that as an NFL player.
- 48:45Speaker 7: I would like to see them get him vertical more.
- 48:48Speaker 7: Can you get Travion Henderson on a linebacker on a
- 48:51Speaker 7: wheel route? They don't really do that.
- 48:53Speaker 5: I would even like to see Stevenson. They did that
- 48:56Speaker 5: a lot in training camp.
- 48:57Speaker 1: I thought they were going to look for.
- 49:01Speaker 5: X plays with the running backs yeah they.
- 49:03Speaker 7: I think they're not getting man coverage yeah so like
- 49:05Speaker 7: you know like they're not getting the matchups in order
- 49:08Speaker 7: to start setting some picks that's like you know we're
- 49:11Speaker 7: doing when we were talking at the top of the
- 49:12Speaker 7: show about if the Bills would go. I would love
- 49:17Speaker 7: for teams to come after him. Play man coverage, please,
- 49:21Speaker 7: and come after him. If I had to watch somebody
- 49:23Speaker 7: sit in a two-eye safety shell against this offense for
- 49:25Speaker 7: 60 snaps a game again.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Eyes on the quarterback.
- 49:29Speaker 5: You're going to continue to see it until the results change.
- 49:32Speaker 7: They would love for teams to play post-safety against them.
- 49:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 49:36Speaker 7: They just don't.
- 49:37Speaker 2: But they know that.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Kyle Williams.
- 49:38Speaker 5: All right.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Time for a break.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Fred's food's here.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Yeah, my food's here.
- 49:42Speaker 6: We got a lot more emails, calls coming up. And then,
- 49:45Speaker 6: of course, picks will be right back after this.

- 52:23Speaker 14: Outside of the usual give and take, are there any
- 52:27Speaker 14: issues with you and Coach?
- 52:29Speaker 9: Coach Vrabel's been One of the best football coaches I've
- 52:32Speaker 9: had in my life.
- 52:33Speaker 18: I think one of the biggest things why this has
- 52:36Speaker 18: been so enjoyable for me is playing for Coach.
- 52:39Speaker 9: I think we all feel that way in the locker room.
- 52:40Speaker 1: He pushes us hard.
- 52:41Speaker 18: I've loved playing for him, and it's not going to change,
- 52:43Speaker 18: and it hasn't changed, and it won't change. The way
- 52:46Speaker 18: he pushes me and coaches the quarterback in a way
- 52:48Speaker 18: that I really respect, and I'm looking forward to getting
- 52:52Speaker 18: going and proving to Coach that I can lead this
- 52:56Speaker 18: football team and play good football.
- 52:59Speaker 12: Hopefully you can put something to rest. There's been a
- 53:01Speaker 12: lot of conversation about the shoulder.
- 53:03Speaker 1: You know, and you were asked questions and it's kind
- 53:07Speaker 1: of like a.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Yes or no.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Is the shoulder impacting how you're throwing the football?
- 53:11Speaker 2: No, it hasn't.
- 53:11Speaker 6: It hasn't.
- 53:11Speaker 18: And, you know, I think, you know, it doesn't impact
- 53:13Speaker 18: my decision-making and that's what, you know, makes, makes and breaks,
- 53:16Speaker 18: you know, play, you know, for quarterbacks. You know, I
- 53:18Speaker 18: don't feel like we're struggling to move the ball. I
- 53:20Speaker 18: think we're, you know, I'm turning the football all over,
- 53:22Speaker 18: doing things that are, you know, preventing us from scoring touchdowns.
- 53:25Speaker 18: And I think that's, the biggest things for me um
- 53:28Speaker 18: i think we've we've done a lot of history when
- 53:30Speaker 18: we don't turn the football over playing you know good
- 53:32Speaker 18: football and finding out and find ourselves on the right
- 53:34Speaker 18: side of games so that's the biggest thing and um
- 53:35Speaker 18: you know i'm looking forward to you know another good
- 53:38Speaker 18: week of practice and felt good out there today.
- 53:40Speaker 12: Some of the stats suggest that you are still throwing
- 53:42Speaker 12: the ball well but it is the decision making that
- 53:44Speaker 12: hasn't been there can you explain like why that might
- 53:47Speaker 12: be like what is the the disconnect on the decision making.
- 53:50Speaker 18: Yeah that's this position i mean you've There's reps in
- 53:53Speaker 18: the game, and there's ones that cost you. It happens
- 53:56Speaker 18: to be the more that you've got to outweigh the
- 53:59Speaker 18: good with the bad by a wide margin to play good.
- 54:01Speaker 9: In this position, and that's quarterback.
- 54:04Speaker 18: I feel good throwing, and I feel like I've got
- 54:08Speaker 18: some throws I wish I had back, as I always do,
- 54:10Speaker 18: and definitely some decisions. But at the same time, I've
- 54:12Speaker 18: got to trust my guys and trust the guys up
- 54:14Speaker 18: front that are doing a nice job to keep on
- 54:16Speaker 18: playing football.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Defines this Bills defense as you get into your study?
- 54:21Speaker 9: Yeah, I think it's the guys they've had.
- 54:23Speaker 18: I've played them for a couple years now. Bernard in
- 54:26Speaker 18: the middle and Rousseau on the edge and they've got
- 54:28Speaker 18: some new additions. But these guys that are they're Bills players.
- 54:32Speaker 18: They're in the right spot. They're coached well. They know tendencies.
- 54:35Speaker 18: They know what we like to do. I think one
- 54:37Speaker 18: of the best things about what they do is they're
- 54:40Speaker 18: going to make you earn it. I think that's Bills
- 54:42Speaker 18: and we've got a tough challenge. I'm looking forward to
- 54:45Speaker 18: getting back up there and Seeing the new stadium and
- 54:48Speaker 18: knowing that they know who they have on offense and
- 54:52Speaker 18: how explosive their offense is. They do a nice job
- 54:55Speaker 18: of making you earn it and making you drive the football.
- 54:58Speaker 19: This group coming together last time you guys went to Buffalo.
- 55:02Speaker 1: What was the key to your group coming together? This
- 55:05Speaker 1: was kind of a turning.
- 55:06Speaker 2: Point last year.
- 55:07Speaker 9: It was handling the environment.
- 55:09Speaker 18: Knowing that we believe in ourselves and knowing that this
- 55:11Speaker 18: is every week in the NFL. There's weeks that you
- 55:14Speaker 18: want to forget about it and move on. There's weeks
- 55:16Speaker 18: you want to build off of. Last week was definitely
- 55:18Speaker 18: one we want to move on from and know that
- 55:20Speaker 18: we've got a tough challenge ahead. It's a division opponent
- 55:23Speaker 18: that we've played before and have a little different staff,
- 55:26Speaker 18: but some same players and good players. We've got our
- 55:29Speaker 18: hands full, but know that it's a challenge that we've
- 55:32Speaker 18: done before. How does Jim Leonard put his stamp on
- 55:34Speaker 18: this defense and how does it look different from how
- 55:36Speaker 18: it was run under Sean McDermott? Definitely different from the
- 55:40Speaker 18: standpoint of what they do structurally. I think they Coming
- 55:43Speaker 18: from a defense last year, Broncos that we faced, that
- 55:46Speaker 18: was really good. They want to do some of the
- 55:48Speaker 18: similar things, but at the same time mix it with
- 55:50Speaker 18: their personnel. They've got good players that have played a
- 55:54Speaker 18: lot in this league and knowing that he won't make
- 55:56Speaker 18: you earn it. At the same time, he'll test you
- 56:00Speaker 18: and try to do some things to get you out
- 56:01Speaker 18: of plays that you feel like are strong.
- 56:05Speaker 1: When times are tough, who do you lean on to help?
- 56:08Speaker 4: First off, my faith.
- 56:09Speaker 5: You've got to lean on your faith.
- 56:10Speaker 18: There's nothing more important And, you know, my purpose in
- 56:13Speaker 18: this life is to be a child of the Lord
- 56:15Speaker 18: and knowing that, man, I'm blessed to be in this position.
- 56:18Speaker 18: And there's always something I can lean on in my
- 56:20Speaker 18: faith and having a good group in this locker room. And,
- 56:23Speaker 18: you know, a great wife and knowing that my family
- 56:25Speaker 18: has always been there.
- 56:26Speaker 9: They always will be. And they'll be at every game.
- 56:28Speaker 18: You know, win, lose, or draw and see me after
- 56:30Speaker 18: the game. So I know it's not where we want
- 56:34Speaker 18: to be and not where we want to start, but,
- 56:35Speaker 18: you know, it's how you, you know, fight back and
- 56:37Speaker 18: respond and knowing that this league is, you know, it's
- 56:39Speaker 18: going to, It's not going to be always sunshines and rainbows.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Had you done those running back drills ever before here
- 56:46Speaker 1: in Foxborough?
- 56:47Speaker 9: Yeah, we did them during training camp.
- 56:49Speaker 18: I think it's one of the things where the more
- 56:51Speaker 18: you run the football, the more you've got to protect
- 56:54Speaker 18: the football. I think that's different for a quarterback when
- 56:58Speaker 18: you're out there and you're not maybe seeing all those
- 57:01Speaker 18: same punches until you get there on Sunday. Trying to
- 57:04Speaker 18: replicate that. I remember doing some in training camp and
- 57:07Speaker 18: you try to mix it in there every now and
- 57:08Speaker 18: then because the football is most important. scrambled near the
- 57:12Speaker 18: red zone because it looked like you had two hands
- 57:14Speaker 18: on it and it still got knocked loose.
- 57:15Speaker 9: Yeah, I was just talking to our running back coach
- 57:17Speaker 9: about that.
- 57:17Speaker 18: You know, these defenses are doing such a nice job
- 57:19Speaker 18: of coaching it and telling people to go punch at
- 57:22Speaker 18: the ball that, you know, even when they feel like
- 57:23Speaker 18: you have two hands, you know, a good punch is
- 57:27Speaker 18: hard to, you know, really compete with. So, just, you know,
- 57:29Speaker 18: reiterating and refocusing that, you know, no matter, you know,
- 57:32Speaker 18: how many times that you can, you know, really try to,
- 57:35Speaker 18: you know, protect the football, you got to hold it
- 57:37Speaker 18: tighter and know that protecting the football protects this building
- 57:41Speaker 18: and everybody's, real life with it. So having that mindset
- 57:43Speaker 18: and I think more falling to the ground is more
- 57:45Speaker 18: of an emphasis for me. Falling to the ground and
- 57:48Speaker 18: not letting it ease up and try to relax when
- 57:51Speaker 18: you're falling to the ground.
- 57:53Speaker 8: Do you feel like you guys as an offense might
- 57:55Speaker 8: benefit from shrinking down some of the things you do
- 57:57Speaker 8: just to try to simplify things for everybody?
- 58:02Speaker 9: I think it's... It's really about us making the plays go.
- 58:06Speaker 18: I don't feel like we're going out there and getting
- 58:09Speaker 18: outmatched and not moving the football.
- 58:11Speaker 9: There's plays out there to be made. There's throws for
- 58:13Speaker 9: me to make.
- 58:15Speaker 18: In the run game, there's extra little straight and blocking
- 58:18Speaker 18: and holes for the backs to hit that you've seen
- 58:21Speaker 18: and we've seen. I feel like we've had the right
- 58:23Speaker 18: plan going into it. I don't think shrinking it or
- 58:27Speaker 18: changing the whole thing is going to really He'll benefit us.
- 58:30Speaker 18: We've got a good core of what we like to do.
- 58:33Speaker 18: We've established in training camp and just finding the times
- 58:35Speaker 18: and finding the ways and making them go. We just
- 58:38Speaker 18: talked about making them go. It starts with me making
- 58:40Speaker 18: them go and making good decisions.
- 58:42Speaker 1: How would you describe what Romeo Dobbs has brought to
- 58:45Speaker 1: the receiver room and where your connection is with him
- 58:47Speaker 1: right now?
- 58:48Speaker 9: I missed him on the third down. I love what
- 58:51Speaker 9: he's been doing.
- 58:52Speaker 18: He's just been putting his head down and working ever
- 58:55Speaker 18: since the first game and I think I'm only gaining
- 59:00Speaker 18: more and more trust in Romeo, and he's doing some
- 59:02Speaker 18: great things blocking the run game and kind of you know,
- 59:05Speaker 18: joining in on the efforts of, you know, becoming, you know,
- 59:07Speaker 18: what we like to do on offense and this football
- 59:09Speaker 18: team with Coach Raves, and that's, you know, effort and
- 59:12Speaker 18: blocking downfield and doing the little things right, and I'm
- 59:14Speaker 18: really proud of how he's handled things and looking forward
- 59:17Speaker 18: to seeing him, you know, keep doing his thing.
- 59:20Speaker 1: And now, great moments in.
- 59:25Speaker 20: He said that there's an episode of Breaking Bad, which
- 59:27Speaker 20: I know you were a big fan of, which had
- 59:29Speaker 20: a cork-sniffing incident in it, and they were scolding you
- 59:32Speaker 20: for not remembering that fact. And you conveniently didn't read
- 59:37Speaker 20: their email when they wrote into the show about it?
- 59:38Speaker 1: So we're sourcing.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Our source now is a fictional television.
- 59:41Speaker 1: No, I'm saying that you don't play both sides. You
- 59:44Speaker 1: don't play it fairly here.
- 59:46Speaker 20: The guy writes in offering alternative evidence and you refuse
- 59:49Speaker 20: to read it.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Again, your evidence is a fictional television show.
- 59:52Speaker 20: That's not my evidence.
- 59:53Speaker 1: I'm just saying.
- 59:54Speaker 7: It is.
- 59:54Speaker 1: I'm sticking up for the... You just use it, Mr.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Brown Cable.
- 59:57Speaker 5: I'm not using it as evidence.
- 59:58Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 59:59Speaker 20: I'm sticking up for the guy who wrote in and
- 1:00:01Speaker 20: was saying that you should have remembered that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Maybe I should have. I don't know. There was like
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: nine seasons, so I don't know. All I know is
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: that it's settled law now. No, it's not. It courts things.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: You know, I was thinking that you should change your
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: fundraiser from a wine tasting to an ass tasting.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Wow, that was a mic drop right there. That was rude.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: That's another great moment from.
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: All right, back here at Patriots Unfiltered. 855-PASS-500 is the hotline.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: Podcasts at Patriots.com. This is an interesting one. Caught my attention.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: Fred, we've got to do something.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Sorry, Fred. We'll come right back to you.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Well, how do you know I wasn't going to say co-pilot? Oh,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: Are you?
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: All right. Go ahead. Okay, fine.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Well, it's time for the Copilot Question of the Week
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: presented by Microsoft Copilot, where every day is game day
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: and where every decision is powered by insight and innovation.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Microsoft technology helps to make decisions faster, insight sharper, and
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: strategies more adaptive. And today we're going to talk a
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: little bit about Josh Allen versus the Patriots. Paul, do
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you want me to start with my stump the grump
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: question or should we work our way to it?
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: Why don't you work your way through?
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: I'll work my way through.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Of course, save the best for last.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Patriots were 7-0 against the Bills 2016-2019. Josh Allen took
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: over in late 2018. Rough first two outings for him.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: One TD, five interceptions. But I think you've said in
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the past, Paul, kind of felt like he turned a
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: corner maybe in that late game in 2019. He had
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: two touchdowns. They lost 24-17. Good game, though. No interceptions.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Saturday game. Saturday game. You don't forget those. And then
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: it felt like. Really, the wheels kind of tended to
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: turn after that point as Josh Allen then beat the Patriots.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Not a great performance in 2020. I forgot this one.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Maybe you remember 24-21. Just one interception. Yeah, not great.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: But then 39-9 in that second one. But, Paul, my
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: question for you is, of course, can you name off
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: all the games the Patriots have beaten Josh Allen since 2020? Oh, well,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: they beat.
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: Him here in a game– Oh, God. Was it two years?
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: No.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: It was last year at Belichick? Did he beat him here?
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: In a home game? And then they obviously won the
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: game that doesn't really count.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: The wind game?
- 1:02:21Speaker 10: The wind game?
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: No.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: The game here that Allen started.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Correct. Didn't play. One snap and then got out. Right.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: He started just to keep his streak going. That was
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: like second to last game in 24. That was the
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Joe Milton game. Right.
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: And then the wind game, 14-11. That's right.
- 1:02:35Speaker 13: 14-10.
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: 14-10.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: 14-10? Correct.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: Three games?
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Correct.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: And then last year?
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: And then last year. Very good. Not the hardest question
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I'm asking there.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: Well, the game that you'd forget is the Joe Milton game. Right.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: They shouldn't have won that game.
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: Right. But I'm saying, like, Josh Allen didn't play. He
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: played literally one.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: No, I know.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: I think he played the first play.
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Or maybe the first series.
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: And, of course, the playoff game when Josh Allen threw
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: five TDs in a 47-17, beat down 157.6. player rating,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: quarterback rating.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: In that one.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: But, you know, guys, they have been a little bit
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: closer in recent memory. But I think looking at the
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: recent results, even though they've kind of, you know, other
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: than the 35 they gave up here, they've kind of
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: before that kept them in the 20s. But to me,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: that says Patriots are going to have to get at
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: least to the 20s to be able to match this week.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: So it hasn't been great all the time. But Josh Allen,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: you got to respect him. He's done a pretty good
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: job here.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: I mean, it's to the point now where if you
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: don't force turnovers, you're not keeping them under 30.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: And that's the key.
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: Because if you look at those games, the games that,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: you know, like last year, what was it, 23-20? They
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: beat them?
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Last year? Yeah.
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: Three turnovers for Buffalo. So if you don't force turnovers,
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: you're not keeping them under 30.
- 1:03:50Speaker 11: And would they have five turnovers last week?
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: They did.
- 1:03:53Speaker 10: Still won the game.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Did not matter.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Won the game. Still scored 24 points. Chargers can't move
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: the ball.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: So there you go. There's your co-pilot question of the week.
- 1:03:58Speaker 12: Okay.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: All right. Dylan in Nashville writes in, headline, how to
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: get Paul a new car.
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: I was listening to yesterday and heard about the rusty
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: state of Paul's car.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: Here's my proposal.
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: One.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Start a GoFundMe.
- 1:04:13Speaker 6: If every diehard PU listener gets five bucks, we'd have
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: a good start.
- 1:04:17Speaker 10: I've tried to galvanize the listeners to do that already.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Do you know how fast I would end up in prison?
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: I will pledge ten.
- 1:04:22Speaker 10: Why?
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: Two GoFundMes for, like, regular people.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Why?
- 1:04:26Speaker 10: It's not like you're not. No, it's not. You're not
- 1:04:29Speaker 10: lying about what it's for. No.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Buy me a car.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we're not lying. We're not saying it's for one
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: thing and then doing another. We're saying it's for Paul's car.
- 1:04:37Speaker 10: People donate it to Lindsay Clancy. I think they donate
- 1:04:39Speaker 10: to you.
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: Anyway, I pledge ten dollars. Two, Christian from L.A. matches
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: the GoFundMe so Paul can buy a high-quality pre-owned Toyota
- 1:04:51Speaker 6: from buyatoyota.com. And then three, the caveat is Paul needs
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: to put a large decal on the back that says,
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: I love Christian from L.A.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Would you do that?
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: For a free car?
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: For a free car.
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: I would absolutely put a sticker for Christian on the back.
- 1:05:06Speaker 10: What if we expense you a car again?
- 1:05:08Speaker 11: Figured out some marketing deal with toyota but you have
- 1:05:11Speaker 11: to have it wrapped in unfiltered branding.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: Right constantly everywhere you go.
- 1:05:16Speaker 11: Like the patriots foundation minivan like that's you but it's
- 1:05:19Speaker 11: patriots unfiltered i do.
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: I love this show i do i love this show
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: hey patriots unfiltered this morning when we were walking in
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: and i you know we were in the parking lot
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: i was like yeah and i just looked at him
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: i go Gotta hurry, picks. And you started laughing.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I go, I love this show. I respect the game, though, Paul,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: as someone who's only had a couple cars in my life.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: But that's the way to win. And you're doing it, too, Alex.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: Drive that sucker into the ground.
- 1:05:46Speaker 10: I'm going to hit three hundos soon.
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: I just went over. This isn't why I do it.
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: I do it because I have no alternative. I know
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: Evan thinks that I'm exaggerating.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: I'm really not.
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: I have no money to buy a car right now.
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: But If you look at any of those things, any
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: money people, any finance talk, it's in the top three
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: of things to do that people tell you is do
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: not have a car payment.
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: That's when you're winning financially. When you have a car
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: and it's paid for, that's when you win.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: As long as you take that money and put it aside.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Get ready for that down payment that's coming down the road. No,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: like what did.
- 1:06:27Speaker 10: Warren Buffett drive?
- 1:06:29Speaker 11: Like an old pickup truck for years?
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: Yeah, and I've never– it's not even about– like I
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: don't really– I'm not fascinated by fancy cars anyway. I
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: would have just another probably sedan that I have now.
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: I don't need anything too special.
- 1:06:44Speaker 10: Nothing bigger.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: No, it's too much gas. I go through gas like
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: it's unbelievable.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Not for it.
- 1:06:49Speaker 10: You could get a hybrid.
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: I can't afford that. Electricity.
- 1:06:53Speaker 10: The GoFundMe.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Plug it in.
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: In 2027, there's going to be some affordable hybrids coming out.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: So where does my GoFundMe ability to use this stop? Like,
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: can I also get out of credit card debt when
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: I do this? As long as I just tell everybody, look,
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: I've been a little bit reckless and I've got myself
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: in some problems. Can you guys get me? Like, is
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: that okay as long as you're up front? No, that's slimy.
- 1:07:17Speaker 6: No, I don't think it is as long as you're
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: up front. Now, people might say, screw you. I got
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: problems too.
- 1:07:22Speaker 11: You're not lying about a diagnosis. If people are willing
- 1:07:28Speaker 11: to give to you, they know what it's for, so
- 1:07:30Speaker 11: they will.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: People get in trouble with scams, and this wouldn't be
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: a scam. I wouldn't be telling you what I'm doing.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Fund my return.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: But no, I do not feel comfortable doing that.
- 1:07:38Speaker 11: It's like a panhandler saying, I'm going to buy booze
- 1:07:41Speaker 11: and drugs.
- 1:07:41Speaker 10: Hey, respect. You're honest. Here's five bucks. Knock yourself out.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: I wouldn't need that much.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: A hundred grand.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: 100 grand.
- 1:07:50Speaker 10: I think we get you a card. The credit card stuff,
- 1:07:53Speaker 10: that's on you. You can figure that out. But, like,
- 1:07:55Speaker 10: the card.
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: What if I went to Robert and Jonathan and said, hey,
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: can you just give me an advance?
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: CTC, cut the check.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: They might. Yeah.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: They might.
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: They might, he says.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: There's no chance. No, alone.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: They're not going to just give you the money.
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: I'll pay it back when I can get it from
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: my 401k.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: There you go. You're moving too much, Paul.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: Just moving money around.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: You're robbing Peter to pay Paul.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: This is what we do.
- 1:08:16Speaker 11: What if you got a part-time job at a car dealership,
- 1:08:18Speaker 11: and then you could just take a car whenever you wanted?
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: Lend your celebrity. It could be Paul Perillo's Celebrity Car Sales,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: and if you come on Saturday between 6- If you're
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: not going to take this seriously, then what are we doing?
- 1:08:28Speaker 10: I was taking this seriously.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Let's get you in some. Let's get you in. Alex
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: actually wanted you to do it. Let's get you in
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: the camera.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Another thing you could do is- Cameo?
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: Start your own podcast, create an LLC, and then start
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: writing off everything to your business.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: So then if you buy a car, you can say
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: it's for business.
- 1:08:46Speaker 10: And you can get yourself.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: A sick car.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: Find yourself one of those nice Toyota SUVs.
- 1:08:48Speaker 11: I think if it's over 2,000 pounds, you can write
- 1:08:50Speaker 11: it off. That's why people have Range Rovers that are
- 1:09:00Speaker 11: all rich because it's so heavy of a car you
- 1:09:01Speaker 11: can write it off.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Based on the weight?
- 1:09:04Speaker 10: Based on the weight of the vehicle.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: Like under what pretense?
- 1:09:08Speaker 10: I don't know. Like it's technically like a.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: Is this one of those things you know a little
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: bit about but you don't know?
- 1:09:12Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah. It's a tax loophole. Someone write in.
- 1:09:16Speaker 11: Someone write in about why everyone gets these big SUVs
- 1:09:19Speaker 11: and Range Rovers and.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Because they have money.
- 1:09:22Speaker 10: No, but like Land Rovers are not a good car.
- 1:09:24Speaker 10: If you had the money.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: I thought they were excellent cars.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: As someone, my boss in California, she only drove Range
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Rovers and it was a nightmare. I had so many
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: times where I'd have to.
- 1:09:33Speaker 10: Trash vehicle.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Like it had a leak. Like it was like leaking
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: water into the cabin.
- 1:09:38Speaker 11: Someone who's an accountant, please email in or call in
- 1:09:41Speaker 11: this show and explain what I'm.
- 1:09:44Speaker 10: Trying to explain.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: How I'm going to set up this.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: The way out of Paul's Jam is to get a
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Range Rover.
- 1:09:50Speaker 10: What about a Toyota Sequoia? Beautiful car. They let us
- 1:09:56Speaker 10: have one of those for the Goodwill hunting shoot.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Yeah, those are nice.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Would you be sad, though, to say goodbye to that?
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: You guys have been together for a while. Do you
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: get emotional when you say goodbye to a car that
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: you've had.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: For a while?
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: If I answer this question honestly, are you guys going
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: to make fun of me?
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: No, because I fully expect you to say no.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: This is my fourth car.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Do you get emotional?
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: Not emotional, but I'm like, I'm going to miss this car.
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: Emotion's a strong word.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we've been through a lot together. I'm not moved
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: to tears.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: I'm not Jim Valvano.
- 1:10:26Speaker 11: The vehicle must have a gross vehicle weight rating of
- 1:10:29Speaker 11: more than 6,000 pounds, and you must use the vehicle
- 1:10:32Speaker 11: more than 50% of the time for qualified business purposes.
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: Heavy SUVs have a specific Section 179 deduction cap.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Just going to the 98.5, that qualifies as business.
- 1:10:44Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Driving to work is business.
- 1:10:47Speaker 5: I mean, I would definitely be able to do the
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: business side of that.
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: Because that's all I ever use my car for.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:10:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: To get back and forth. And you're not a W-2 employee.
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: Does commuting count as used for business?
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: I think so. I think so.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: But I don't know. I'm going to have to consult
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: the attorney. All right.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Get Paul a car. Bart Polin writes in, podcast at Patriots.com.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Packers fans.
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: I'm going to be a big part of the newsletter
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: this week.
- 1:11:14Speaker 6: Packers fans always said that Dobbs is incredibly inconsistent. He
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: can be completely unplayable for a month, and then suddenly...
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: look like a top 20 wide receiver for the next
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: few weeks. In the Steelers game, he set his regular
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: season career high with 96 receiving yards. However, he has
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: always seemed to turn it up in the playoffs. He
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: has two playoff games with 100-plus receiving yards.
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: Yeah, so this is funny that the email that brought
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: this up. I'm clicking around last night, commercials of the
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: Red Sox, and I'm just bouncing around. ESPN, one of
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: the ESPNs had NFL greatest games, you know, one of
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: those things. And I was like, I always like to look, oh,
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: what game are they doing, you know? And it was
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: last year's playoff game between the Bears and the Packers.
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: The Bears go down. Caleb Williams throws a touchdown pass
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: to DJ Moore, puts them ahead. Now they've got to
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: come up with a stop at the end. It's like
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: a third and ten crossing around. Romeo Dobbs dropped it.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: And I was like, okay. Yeah, I've seen that.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: Literally, I watched like three plays of this in between commercials,
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: and one of them was a Romeo Dobbs drop.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: And he has had some good, you know, he's right.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: He has had a couple of really good playoff games.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: The same thing that we've seen. I mean, even in
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: the small sample size that I've been privileged to watch
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: in training camp and in these games, like it's the
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: same thing. He made some plays in training camp. He's
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: made some plays here, but he's also had some bad drops.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: He was known for drops a little bit in Green Bay.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: And it's funny because I didn't really see that in practice.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: I thought he showed really strong hands in practice.
- 1:12:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: But we'll see.
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: Jeff in Canada writes in, I don't know the line
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: for this game. That's not really why I love football.
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: But with all that's going on in the Bills' performance
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: so far and the Patriots' performances, I'll say winning this
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: game on Sunday would probably be the biggest upset in Patriots'
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: franchise history since the first Rams Super Bowl. You will
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: be hard-pressed to find one person in the media without
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: Patriot ties that is picking against the Bills.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: Therefore, nothing to lose. Go down taking big swings. Maybe... M-A-Y-E,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: maybe you hit a few homers.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I like it. I mean, I think that one
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: in 23 when they beat him with Mac Jones was probably,
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: it was a pretty big upset too. But I think
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: the thing with this game is it's week four. And
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: so you have a small sample size and both teams
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: kind of mostly tell you a very specific thing. And
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: that is that the Bills are really good and that
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: the Patriots are not really good right now. You know,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: when it's more towards the middle of the season, you've
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: probably seen more examples of ups and downs and, Maybe
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you've seen some more places where the Bills could be attacked.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Maybe you've seen more positives for the Patriots. But he's
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: probably right. I'm picking the Bills today. I think most
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: people probably will.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: Email writes in, Fred, I'm fed up with you.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Me too.
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: Why are you the only one ordering and eating lunch?
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: Don't other people get hungry? Let them eat cake. Actually,
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: they eat half of mine.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: He throws us the scraps. We fight over them.
- 1:14:14Speaker 11: I enjoyed one chicken tender today.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Paul doesn't eat anymore. I eat.
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: I just don't eat lunch like I used to.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: You don't eat lunch, period.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: No, I do sometimes. Just not five days a week
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: like I used to.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: I get a little groggy.
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: It's also part of the finances that we've been talking about.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's part of it, too. But I find when
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: I eat, I kind of want to take a nap.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: And I don't think that's good radio, whether I eat.
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: Before the show. I'm going to be joining Mike. Mike
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: DeSoto and I have a video shoot tomorrow that we
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: have to do. And after we're done with that, we're
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: probably going to go to Red Robin. Probably.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: Probably.
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: Right? So I eat lunch sometimes.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: Treat yourself. Thanks for that invite. You're more than welcome.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: You want to join?
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: Why would you want to come out with us?
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: Nobody invited me.
- 1:14:57Speaker 10: Don't you guys go every Friday?
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Yeah, let's not invite Matt. I don't want to.
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't feel comfortable with him going.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: No.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Ever since he grew a beard and got glasses, I
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: don't know who this guy is anymore.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Okay, back to the phones.
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: Now I have to send an email organization-wide and let
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: everybody know I'm going to Red Robin on Friday.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: It was just three of us doing the recording, and
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: two of you were going to lunch, and one.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Of us wasn't invited.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: Thanks, Matt.
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: See you.
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: The invite actually comes from a different department.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Finance Fridays.
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: Fridays, yes. Fridays with Finance.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Sabah is in North Carolina. What's up, Sabah?
- 1:15:30Speaker 15: Hey there, gentlemen and lady. I just want to apologize
- 1:15:33Speaker 15: for my rant yesterday. I'm a little bit calmer today.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: No, it's all right.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: No apologies. We like angry Sabah. Come on. We don't
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: need apologies. We need passion, and that's what you bring.
- 1:15:44Speaker 10: Okay.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Dead serious.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: We need brevity.
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: One phone to pick with Paul.
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: One phone to pick with Paul.
- 1:15:51Speaker 15: You said that Drake May was bad starting at the playoffs.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: Yes, last year.
- 1:15:57Speaker 15: Yes, he was not as good, but he was the
- 1:16:00Speaker 15: only quarterback, if I remember correctly, that threw three touchdown
- 1:16:03Speaker 15: passes against the Texans. No other quarterback has done that.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: Hey, you know what else no other quarterback did in
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: that game?
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: What?
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: Fumble four times.
- 1:16:11Speaker 7: Yeah, and guess what?
- 1:16:12Speaker 15: He won. When it mattered most, he won the game now.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: No, he didn't, but the defense did.
- 1:16:18Speaker 15: And he won the game in Denver when.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: It was a blizzard.
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: He didn't win that one either.
- 1:16:22Speaker 16: Against the Texans, too.
- 1:16:24Speaker 15: Don't forget that. Was it Texas or the Chargers? Two
- 1:16:27Speaker 15: games out of the three were bad weather.
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: So remember that.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: They blend together for me, too.
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: I don't really care what the weather is. He didn't
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: play well in any of those three games.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: Well, he didn't play lights out.
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: He didn't play well in any of those three games.
- 1:16:39Speaker 15: Okay, but what happened before? What was the narrative at
- 1:16:42Speaker 15: the end of the season? What was the narrative from
- 1:16:44Speaker 15: Drake May? What was the coach all telling him?
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: What was it?
- 1:16:49Speaker 15: Just before the postseason started.
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: Why don't you pretend we already know the answer?
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: What was the narrative?
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: What was the answer?
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:16:58Speaker 20: Do not fumble.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Stop fumbling.
- 1:17:00Speaker 12: Stop fumbling.
- 1:17:01Speaker 15: So what do you think he did? He got tight
- 1:17:03Speaker 15: in the pocket again. He was playing a little hesitant
- 1:17:06Speaker 15: than he normally did. He wasn't as comfortable in the pocket.
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:17:10Speaker 15: If you tell someone every time they leave the house
- 1:17:12Speaker 15: instead of have a good day, don't die, I mean,
- 1:17:16Speaker 15: eventually they get scared and they don't ever leave the house.
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: So I will think that has something to do with it. Well,
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: I tell my kids to be safe every time that
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: they leave me, especially when they're driving.
- 1:17:24Speaker 15: But I think it has something to do with it.
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:17:26Speaker 15: I'm not going.
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: To stop doing that.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: Can we go to the solution?
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: Okay. Give us the solution.
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: So I'm thinking, first of.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: All, move the pocket.
- 1:17:37Speaker 15: They don't do that. Hurry up offense makes Drake May
- 1:17:40Speaker 15: think less. You know, my Tar Heels had a nice
- 1:17:42Speaker 15: lead against Clemson last week or whatever.
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: Two weekends ago.
- 1:17:45Speaker 15: You know, the Belichick team that he's ruining. Anyway, their
- 1:17:48Speaker 15: young quarterback was his first start, and he played god awful.
- 1:17:52Speaker 15: And guess what they did? They started no huddle, and
- 1:17:57Speaker 15: they started hurrying him up. He played lights out. We
- 1:18:00Speaker 15: couldn't stop him after that. Maybe if you no huddle,
- 1:18:02Speaker 15: the defense flips and falls. They're not in these exotic things.
- 1:18:06Speaker 15: You get a little rhythm. You think less. And also,
- 1:18:09Speaker 15: can you do one more thing I was wondering? Tom
- 1:18:11Speaker 15: Brady used to do this a lot on your team,
- 1:18:13Speaker 15: where he would actually, the check down was his first read,
- 1:18:16Speaker 15: and they treated that as the run game. Why not
- 1:18:19Speaker 15: send four people vertical and just check it down to
- 1:18:22Speaker 15: Henderson in the open field at the beginning of the
- 1:18:24Speaker 15: play so that he can get some steam instead of
- 1:18:27Speaker 15: him being the check down? What do you think of
- 1:18:29Speaker 15: that as the run game?
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: Listen, I'll do anything.
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: It might work a couple plays, but as that's your
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: game plan, I don't know if it's going to work
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: over the course of the game, but I mean, to
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: do that once or twice?
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, why not? Four verticals?
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: They got to start converting.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Thanks, Sabah.
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: We were talking before the break, before Evan left, and
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: he was saying some of his teams, their goal is
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: to stay out of third down. Well, the reason that
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: you want to stay out of third down is because
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: it's really hard to convert on third downs. And they're
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: 13 for 40 on third downs.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: That's 32.5%. That's not good.
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: So that's really bad, and it's really hard to get
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: in no huddle when you can't convert. So all no
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: huddle is doing in those situations is getting you off
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: the field quicker. So I'm open to any and all suggestions.
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: I would like to see them. I know it seems
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: like I'm sort of nitpicking everything that Sabah said. I'm not.
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: I would actually like to see them do some no-huddle stuff.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: And no-huddle doesn't mean you have to speed it up.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Right. But tempo.
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: I do think that they could use a little of that.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: But they have to execute better. And the quarterback has
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: to play better. It's not about, like, they're telling him
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: not to do this so he does it.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I mean, he has to play better than he's played.
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: And listen, if we have to sit there and make
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: one excuse after another, what is that telling you?
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: If you have to remind him not to fumble and
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: he fumbles anyway, what is that telling you? Or if
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: you have to tell him, hey, don't fumble, and that
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: gets into his head, what does that tell you?
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: All these things, yes, can be fixed, but they're.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: Issues, and we've got to figure it out, and he's
- 1:20:11Speaker 6: got to figure it out.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: McClain's in Oregon. What's up? What's up, McClain?
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: McClain?
- 1:20:18Speaker 19: Morning from the West Coast, guys.
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: Hey.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Hey.
- 1:20:21Speaker 19: So I have some hopes for everybody. And it could
- 1:20:26Speaker 19: be just what we're talking about is an identity crisis.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: What is going on? I keep talking to the phone.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Can you hear me? Yeah.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: Sorry.
- 1:20:37Speaker 19: I'm working and got my headphones in. But what if
- 1:20:40Speaker 19: what we've got is just totally an identity crisis, which
- 1:20:43Speaker 19: I seem to remember last year being a problem. So
- 1:20:47Speaker 19: if we had an easy schedule last year and it
- 1:20:50Speaker 19: was an identity problem, we did a lot better. And
- 1:20:53Speaker 19: on Bill's week, we started to figure it out. This
- 1:20:57Speaker 19: year it's a harder schedule, identity problem, and Drake May
- 1:21:01Speaker 19: loses all of his confidence, which is why we're seeing
- 1:21:04Speaker 19: what we're seeing. Maybe he gains it back and he
- 1:21:09Speaker 19: starts to get into chemistry with the team together again.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: That's what I see.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: Thanks, McClain.
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: I mean, that's the hope. Keep working and it starts
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: to come together and starts to work.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: You know? Yeah. Let's go to Nick in San Diego. Hey, Nick.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: Nick in San Diego. San Diego. Sorry. Mispronounced it.
- 1:21:36Speaker 8: No?
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: Okay. We'll go. We'll go to Cheeseland. Chuckie. What's up, Chuckie?
- 1:21:45Speaker 8: Hey, folks. How are you doing?
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: Good.
- 1:21:47Speaker 8: I'm still cracking up. I just don't want you all
- 1:21:50Speaker 8: to go to prison for tax evasion and show over
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: to Evan. Hang in there, Evan. Try to talk some
- 1:21:58Speaker 8: sense into him.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: What is the tax evasion? What do we do?
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: Is this the heavy SUV thing again?
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: No, these are legal loopholes.
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: Anyway, hey, back to football. Just kind of carrying one over.
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: I don't know how much it happens in professional football,
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: but I have seen it on occasion. Teams early in
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: the season might not show all of their tricks before
- 1:22:23Speaker 8: they go play the big game. Anybody think that there
- 1:22:27Speaker 8: might be something new show up on the field this
- 1:22:30Speaker 8: weekend with Buffalo?
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I think there'll be something new. What would you
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: consider something new?
- 1:22:38Speaker 8: Uh just the tempo i think you all were talking.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: About sure they could do that like maybe a flea flicker.
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: Maybe yeah how about how about like a double pass
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: thrown by the wide receiver yeah i think this could
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: be a week that they do like they might have
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: another trick player to up their sleeve this week yeah
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: i don't think they're hiding any of their tricks i
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: think they're that they're they're out there in plain sight
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: yeah we've seen them that was one of the things
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: that um Liam Cohen was the useless halftime reporter that
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: they have to give us all the time. Nothing worse
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: than listening to what these guys have to say. But anyway,
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: I digress. And he's told us, be on alert for
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: all kinds of trick plays.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Thanks for the insight. Be ready for a trick play.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: What trick play?
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: What formation? Any particular personnel? Look for a trick play.
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: But yeah, they ran a flea flicker in the first week.
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: They ran a double pass in the second week. Yeah,
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: I think they could do some stuff.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Wildcats.
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: But I like the idea of, like I said, Saba's
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: idea of tempo and Chucky's is the same thing. Yeah,
- 1:23:42Speaker 5: I mean, I don't necessarily think that's, like, they have
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: to play better to get into that stance. Like, if
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: you go no huddle and you still go three and out,
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: it doesn't really matter if you do that while huddling.
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: But if you can put some first downs together... And
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: you can start putting some drives together without turning the
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: ball over, as Alex said earlier in the show. Like, sometimes,
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: you know, they have two picks in the end zone.
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: That directly takes points off the board. You know, so
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: maybe you wouldn't feel as bad. Fred, you mentioned the
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: Demario Douglas shot.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: That's a touchdown. Yeah.
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: So, I don't think it's... I know it sounds like
- 1:24:18Speaker 5: we're just sitting here on Patriots.com telling you how it's
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: not as bad as you think.
- 1:24:21Speaker 10: Kyle Williams stepping out of bounds.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: But I don't think it's as bad as, like, it looks.
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: All the time.
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: The turnovers have been terrible. And the choppiness of the
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: offense has been terrible. But there have been opportunities to
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: make plays. They just haven't made them consistently enough.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Put me down for a Caleb Lomu touchdown at
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: some point. I think that's my... Oh, you mean a.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Pass to him?
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Slip him out.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Sort of like what they did with Solder back in
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: the day?
- 1:24:45Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: I haven't seen it.
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: I was going to say something very disrespectful. I'll save
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: it for after.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: To me?
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: No.
- 1:24:50Speaker 10: Not to you.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Not about you. To you, but not about you.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: James in Portsmouth, England. I don't care about Greg Rousseau.
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: Listening to Evan discuss the offensive line scheme usage versus
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: player type that they draft, it feels like there could
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: be a disconnect between the front office and Josh McDaniel's scheme.
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: If they are drafting and signing more athletic O'Lyman, why
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: are we running lots of duos? and other running plays
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: that don't play to the strength of our team. Surely
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: with more athletic O-linemen, we should be using more motion,
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: amplifying what they do well. My bad if I misinterpreted
- 1:25:23Speaker 6: what Evan meant. No, I think that's kind of what
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: he meant.
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: No, but I would also say three out of the
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: five starting offensive linemen are not that smaller move athletic type.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: Vera Tucker, Awenu, and Moses are road graders. Those are
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: big guys. So I think you could make an argument
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: that maybe there's a little bit mismatched personnel. I know
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: I was going to ask Evan when he was in
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: the middle of that, but I kind of zoned out.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: Um, I love taking shots at easy, easy.
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: Um, it's not even here.
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: Yeah. Um, how many, and serious question, how many teams
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: are on the lead? Do you think have sort of
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: combinations of like that of offensive linemen?
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: I'm not an offensive line expert.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: It's more traditional. It's the athletic on the left side.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: Big power guys on the right side, more athletic guys.
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: I would say Vera Tucker is a little bit of
- 1:26:16Speaker 5: a combo. He's a big guy, but he's also a
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: pretty good athlete.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: Good run blocker.
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: Clearly Campbell is a more athletic guy. How many teams
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: have something like that? No, I think that's the point
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: I was just going to bring up, too.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: I think that's, to me, more the traditional way to
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: do it. Like, you know, and I know we've gotten
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: away from we always run right, we pass protect left.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: You know, like that kind of left-right thing. It seems
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: like it's, you know, right tackles are getting paid as
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: much as left tackles now just about. But, yeah, I
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: think that's, to me, that's part of it, too. You know,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: but I also think that if you have all the
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: same thing, you're always doing the same thing. You know,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: you want to be able to break it up and
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: do a little different. I mean, when you looked a
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: lot different to me. than the rest of the line.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: I mean, he just looks a lot different than a lot.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: I mean, you look at Moses, you.
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: Look at Campbell and you say, those two guys play
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: the same position. I mean, he looks like a little brother.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: And then you throw like crown over and Marcus Bryan
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: into that. And those guys are like long, you know,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: not as thick as Morgan Moses, but more in the
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: traditional length when you think of tackles.
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: Nick in Omaha writes in first in the midst of
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: all the chaos. I just want to say you guys
- 1:27:18Speaker 6: are absolutely killing it. Paul, I genuinely don't think I've
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: ever disagreed with you. Maybe I just need to email
- 1:27:24Speaker 6: more often so we can find something.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: Evan, never apologize.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: No one's ever said that before.
- 1:27:28Speaker 6: Evan, never apologize for the rants. The more you divulge,
- 1:27:31Speaker 6: the more I feel like I learn, so please keep
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: them coming.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: A couple questions.
- 1:27:36Speaker 6: Evan, I love the team ball knower. Is that something
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: you and your friends came up with, or is this
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: an established term that somehow passed me by?
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Where did ball.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Knower come from? I don't know exactly, but I've been
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: kicking around a t-shirt ball knower, and I think I've
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: got to get them printed. I think that.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: Would be a good present. Did we use that first?
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: I don't think we used that.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: We talked about that.
- 1:27:54Speaker 10: It started as like a Twitter term, like they know ball.
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: I've used it for a long time off of that.
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: But I don't know if I got it from someone.
- 1:28:04Speaker 6: And more importantly, is there a term for the opposite,
- 1:28:07Speaker 6: an antonym for ball knower?
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Paul.
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: I was going to say Fred.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: I was trying to think of a joke quick, and
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: you beat me to it on that one.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:28:15Speaker 5: Some guys just watch the game and know all that
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: same stuff. It just doesn't necessarily need to be broken down.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: I was trying to describe it to my wife the
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: other day and realized I had absolutely no idea how
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: to describe Christian in L.A.
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: He's a passionate fan of the show.
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: Rowdy, Rowdy Piper.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: Yeah, a little bit. Just a muckraker.
- 1:28:39Speaker 6: Right?
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: Yeah. But a good one. Like, with sort of like...
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: Not afraid to be the heel?
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: Charisma.
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:28:46Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: Like, he's not just like.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: Not afraid to be hated. Or disliked by the rest
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: of the fans.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: The heel turn.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: It's that time of the week, Matt.
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: Oh, God.
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: Tank's head in shame. We all will.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: Okay. At the bottom of the list this week, and
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: I only bring this up because it never happens, so
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: I'm going to be excited about it just for one
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: week only. Fred, six and ten.
- 1:29:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I smelled that one coming. I'm simpatico with the team.
- 1:29:29Speaker 6: If the team's not doing well, I can't do well.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: You're off. You're off.
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: I'm off.
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: Your biorhythms are all out of whack. Mike, Alex, and Evan,
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: all 7-9. So the inference would be, tough week, except
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: for Paul went 10-6.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: So it was a week for Paul.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: It was a tough week for everybody else.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: Paul's was sharp.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: With the spread, Mike, 4-12. That's what I do.
- 1:30:00Speaker 11: Alex, 5-11.
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: Evan, 6-10.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: Fred, 7-9.
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: And it's just a week for Paul, so he went
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: 10-6 with the spread, too.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: Paul running away with it.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 1:30:12Speaker 10: That's going to be hard to climb back from.
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: So overall, Paul is 31-17 at the top. Alex, 26-22,
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: proving that last year's run was no fluke. Mike and Fred,
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: 25 and 23. And this is a truly astounding record
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: for the ball knower. This is the overall just pick winners.
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: Three full weeks into the season, he's 21 and 27.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Because he uses stats.
- 1:30:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: It's analytics driven for him.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: That's why he can't do it. He can't break the
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: scheme down.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: He knows what the schemes are, but he doesn't know
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: whose players are better than the others.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: He can't grind the film for all 32. The Patriots
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: are the Patriots' opponent.
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: With the spread, Paul also leads that 27 and 21.
- 1:31:06Speaker 7: Talking in third.
- 1:31:06Speaker 11: Person doesn't make you sound anyone.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: He keeps the book, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: He does keep the book.
- 1:31:13Speaker 5: That's probably not adding anything to the GoFundMe, is it?
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: No, no.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: Fred, 21 and 27. Alex, 20 and 28. Mike, 19
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: and 29. And Evan, 17 and 31.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: Wow. Okay.
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: So those are your standings through three weeks.
- 1:31:29Speaker 6: I need a Patriots, I mean a Red Sox-like turnaround here.
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: So I got to get serious.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: We'll start tonight. Paul loves these divisional games. It's Pittsburgh
- 1:31:44Speaker 6: at Cleveland. Pittsburgh's 2-1. Cleveland's 2-1.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: Surprising Browns.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: You know the name of the Browns stadium? I didn't.
- 1:31:56Speaker 5: Is it Huntington something?
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Huntington Bank Field. Yeah.
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: So Pittsburgh is favored by two and a half. So
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: Deshaun Watson, huh? Everybody's excited.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: Cleveland, they're back on the train. It's like, he's our
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: guy now.
- 1:32:11Speaker 7: We're winning.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: Not necessarily sure that that's happening.
- 1:32:13Speaker 7: They're trying to push for it.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: I don't feel great about Aaron Rodgers on a short week.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: You know, as you get older, a little bit of
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: physical Cleveland defense. I think I'm going to go with
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: Cleveland in the upset at home short week. And I'll
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: take those two and a half points.
- 1:32:29Speaker 10: I actually like a Cleveland upset as well.
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: I'll tell you, that's really disappointing. Because you're going with Cleveland.
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: Because I'm going with Cleveland, and now I don't feel
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: great about it.
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: This is a tough one because Pittsburgh had a better
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: game last week than Cleveland surprised everybody just by going 2-1.
- 1:32:47Speaker 6: So who's what with these two teams? I'm going to
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: go with Pittsburgh to win outright.
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just doing the division thing, you know, home game, division.
- 1:32:57Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:32:58Speaker 5: That's why I'm going with Pittsburgh. I think these are
- 1:33:00Speaker 5: actually two bad teams. I'll take the home team, even
- 1:33:02Speaker 5: though they're both 2-1.
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: Is that an international game, or is this next one
- 1:33:08Speaker 6: an international game?
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: Indianapolis.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: Pittsburgh is at Cleveland.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:33:12Speaker 5: You literally just said it. It's a Huntington Bank stadium.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:33:15Speaker 6: This next one, Indianapolis. It's a Sunday at 9.30.
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: Oh, there's a London game this week.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Indy 1-2.
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: Playing the Commanders 1 and 2 in London at the
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which I hear is lovely.
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: Indy is favored by 3.5.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: Indy broke their losing streak finally last week. I don't know.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: In this one, I think Jonathan Taylor is the best
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: player on either of these two teams. I'm going to
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: take Indianapolis. And I'm going to lay the points. I
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: don't know. Do Sherry Harris, Steph Diggs?
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: I mean, Patriots should still have Steph Diggs.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: He's a great player.
- 1:33:59Speaker 10: Indy, Indy.
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: Oh, man. You guys are killing me.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: I love by just making my pick, I can feel
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Paul be like, I'm losing confidence. I'll take the Colts.
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: I did think about taking the hook, but I'm going
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: to lay the points. I'll take the Colts both ways.
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I think Mariota had his Bailey Zappi game, so
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: I'm going to go with the Colts.
- 1:34:18Speaker 9: What does that mean?
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Was he good? Was he bad?
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: He had a flash.
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: He flashed there. He was the thing there for a minute.
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: All right, Sunday at 1, the Titans are 0-3, and
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: they visit the Ravens, who are 2-1.
- 1:34:34Speaker 5: Ravens by 11.5.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: Sheesh. That's a lot of points. I'm going to take
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: Baltimore to win.
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: Baltimore. Baltimore.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: And shoot, I don't feel great about Tennessee in any capacity,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: but just Baltimore is so inconsistent. I'm going to lay
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: the points.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Baltimore.
- 1:34:49Speaker 10: Baltimore.
- 1:34:50Speaker 7: Liam.
- 1:34:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I will take Baltimore to win the game, but
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: I agree with what Deuce was saying there. The inconsistency
- 1:34:59Speaker 5: for the Ravens and their inability to protect leads. I'll
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: take 11 and a half. There's no reason to if
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: you've been watching Tennessee. They haven't played well.
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: Baltimore wins, but Tennessee covers. Blame it on Rio.
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: Anyone?
- 1:35:14Speaker 13: No?
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: Blame it on the rain. Can you give us a little.
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: I thought that was a song, Blame It On Rio.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Blame It On The Rain.
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: There was a movie, Blame It On Rio.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, there was a movie.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: Michael Caine, but what does that have to do with.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: Well, they just came back from Rio, so they're still recovering.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: Oh, good. Now I get it. Great. Okay. Great stuff.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: What a game they gave them down there, huh?
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a good game. All right, New Jersey
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: at 1-2. Visit Chicago at 2-1.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: Chicago by 3-1.
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: I was getting a lot of love for that win
- 1:35:46Speaker 6: last week.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: I agree with Paul's overall take, though. I feel like
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: the Jets have added some veterans. They look like a
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: competent football team. And, you know, Geno Smith's still in
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: that early-season honeymoon mode where he usually comes up here
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: and he lights up the Patriots somehow and then can't
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: function otherwise. But I'll take Chicago. Impressive what they did
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: last week with Case Keenum. I'm going to lay the points.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: I think the Jets will start to not fall back
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: to earth, but I think they'll start to look more
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: like the regular old Jets.
- 1:36:12Speaker 10: I'll take Chicago. I'm going to take the Jets to cover, though.
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going to take Chicago both ways only because
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: I think Ben Johnson is really looking to score points.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: This is his old offensive coordinator rival, right? They were
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: both at Detroit together. Am I remembering that correctly?
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, Aaron Glenn.
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: I will pick Chicago to win, but I'll pick the
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: Jets to cover that.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: It's an empty carcass pick for me.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: I was thinking the same thing. I know, Donovan. Great,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: great deuces right there.
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: An empty carcass game for me. Just there's no, there's
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: no guts.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: They got no guts.
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: My heart's not in it.
- 1:36:54Speaker 13: Oh, okay.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: All right. So why do you have beef with the
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: Bears now?
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Why do I have beef with them? Yeah.
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: Like why? I mean, I understand the Jets.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: Like you don't care. The Jets.
- 1:37:04Speaker 5: I don't have beef with them. So why is it
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: an empty carcass game?
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: My heart's not in the pick. I'm not really sure.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: Oh, it's his carcass that's empty.
- 1:37:11Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:37:12Speaker 5: I thought it was more like Cincinnati's playing the Jets.
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: It's an empty carcass game.
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: Oh, no, no. It's me.
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: I hate both of those teams.
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: My heart's not in the pick.
- 1:37:19Speaker 10: It's not them. It's me.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: Full eyes, open heart. What is it called?
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: Can't lose.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: Full eyes, empty carcass, can't lose. Right, right, right.
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: Sunday at 1. Jacksonville 2-1 at Cincinnati.
- 1:37:34Speaker 6: 2-1.
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: Cincinnati by 2.5.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Ooh, this is a good game, actually.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: No love for Jacksonville. I would be disrespected. Feel disrespected
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: if I was them.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a tough one for me. You know,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: usually the home team gets two and a half, so
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: usually I think that's the new thing, right?
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: It's a toss-up.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Sugar plums. You know what? I'm going to go with Cincinnati.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: I'm going to go with Joe Burrow. I'm going to
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: give him a slight edge, even though I'm very impressed
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: with Trevor Lawrence last week. I think he's really humming.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: He's got some good pieces. But I think Cincinnati's got
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: a little bit more talent, and they're at home. I'm
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: going to take Cincinnati, and I'll lay the points.
- 1:38:10Speaker 11: This is a tough one for me as well, but
- 1:38:12Speaker 11: recency bias, Jacksonville just looked pretty good, so I'm going
- 1:38:16Speaker 11: to take a Jaguars upset.
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I do think Jacksonville's the better team, personnel-wise, but
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: the Bengals were so bad defensively last week, I've got
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: to think they bounced back, and there a little bit
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: better than that. But we'll see, because they had a
- 1:38:32Speaker 5: couple of good games defensively. People were like, oh, maybe
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: they've turned the corner a little bit.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: Then I talked my son into picking up their defense, and.
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: Then they were just awful in that game last week.
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: I'm going to take the Bengals to bounce back.
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: This should be a good game, though. Two playoff-caliber teams.
- 1:38:46Speaker 6: Jacksonville's coming off a huge win, kind of like their
- 1:38:49Speaker 6: Super Bowl. So they might have a letdown, but I
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: want them to beat Cincinnati, so I'm picking Jacksonville to
- 1:38:55Speaker 6: win this game.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:38:58Speaker 5: You guys know how I like to have the arguments
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: with myself before they happen.
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:39:03Speaker 5: So this is one that Paul had a whole conversation
- 1:39:05Speaker 5: in his head before it happened. It's like, this is
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: going to be a really, really tough one for Fred
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: because I know he's going to want to take Jacksonville
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: to lose. Because they won their Super Bowl last week.
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: But they're playing Cincinnati, and he can't take Cincinnati. So
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: what does he do?
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Exactly that.
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: That was 30 seconds of my mindset just this morning
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: when I was filling out the sheet.
- 1:39:31Speaker 6: All right. Sunday at 1. Dallas 1-2 at Houston 0-3.
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: Big trade for the Cowboys overnight.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Joey Porta.
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: Houston by three. The 0-3 Texans against the 1-2 Cowboys.
- 1:39:44Speaker 5: They don't know anything about football in Texas, obviously.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: Bam.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: That's a strange pick. Yeah, I mean, rough way for
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: Dallas to go out. I'm going to take Dallas. Take
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: Dallas on the road for a little bit of an
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: upset there.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: What was the spread again?
- 1:39:59Speaker 5: Houston by three.
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: Houston by three.
- 1:40:01Speaker 5: Teams that combined 1-5.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:40:03Speaker 5: They just went with the home team.
- 1:40:06Speaker 10: I'll take Dallas, too.
- 1:40:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, well, I definitely lost the last two
- 1:40:13Speaker 5: weeks predicting this, but I'll make it three in a row.
- 1:40:16Speaker 5: I think at some point that Houston defense just reverts
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: to form, and I'll take Houston. Slow down the Cowboys offense,
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: which is pretty good.
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to go with Houston as well, but
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: I'll take those points. Sure, why not? Sunday at 1.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: Split the baby?
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:40:34Speaker 6: Sunday at 1, Arizona 1 and 2 at the Giants
- 1:40:38Speaker 6: 2 and 1.
- 1:40:39Speaker 5: Okay, now you often say things. Arizona by 2 and
- 1:40:43Speaker 5: a half. Comments?
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: Thoughts?
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: I think this is an odd spread.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: Arizona by 2 and a half, yeah.
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: At the Giants.
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:40:54Speaker 5: I didn't get that wrong, right? It's at the Giants.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: At the Giants, correct.
- 1:40:57Speaker 14: Well.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: Road favorites. I think that's a weird... Home dog, Giants.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: I think that's a weird spread. They just got J.J. McCarthy, too.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: J.J., yeah.
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: That's not necessarily why I think it's weird.
- 1:41:06Speaker 10: I wonder who's going to play.
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: You'd think.
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: I mean, they'd get more... Yeah, I'm torn. Shoot, I'm
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: just going to go with the home dog. I'm going
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: to go with the Giants.
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:41:18Speaker 10: Oh, I hate this one. This is an empty carcass
- 1:41:20Speaker 10: game for me. Arizona, I guess.
- 1:41:23Speaker 5: I think we've... We've added something to the lexicon. Empty
- 1:41:27Speaker 5: carcass game. I'm going to do two bad teams. I'm
- 1:41:31Speaker 5: going to take the home team. And the fact that
- 1:41:33Speaker 5: I'm getting points while doing it, I'll take the Giants.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: The fact that you think this is a weird spread.
- 1:41:39Speaker 5: Probably tells me that Arizona is going to blow doors.
- 1:41:40Speaker 6: And I wouldn't disagree with you. It tells me the
- 1:41:43Speaker 6: Sharps know something.
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: What do they know? I'll go with Arizona.
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: Especially with a New York team involved.
- 1:41:48Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:41:49Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:41:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: I'll go with Arizona. Sunday at 1. A lot of
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: 1 o'clock games. The Rams at 1-2 at Philadelphia, 2-1.
- 1:41:59Speaker 5: Rams by three.
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: No respect for Philly.
- 1:42:03Speaker 6: Yeah. Wow.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: This is another good game. I feel like two teams
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: have been a little bit disappointing maybe considering expectations. Puka, Puka. Puka,
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: Puka play. Puka play. In that case, I'm going to
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: go with the Rams on the road.
- 1:42:20Speaker 10: Me too.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:42:22Speaker 5: I think the Rams have had, uh, you know, a
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: couple of hiccups here, but nothing that is too serious yet,
- 1:42:27Speaker 5: but you don't want to get one in three and
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: all of a sudden the ball starts rolling and you
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: kind of kiss the division goodbye. You know, obviously the
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: Patriots are dealing with similar situation. I'm going to take
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: the Rams on the road.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: Okay. Aaron Donald playing.
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: Yeah. Getting better every week.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: He was good last week.
- 1:42:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: I'll go with the Rams. I'll go with the Rams
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: as well.
- 1:42:51Speaker 6: Um, still sunday at one green bay at one and
- 1:42:55Speaker 6: two at tampa bay oh and three uh.
- 1:42:59Speaker 5: With jaylen daniels i believe um at quarterback for the
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: bucks um green bay by three and a half.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: Ick i don't feel great about this i mean green
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: bay's offensive line is a disaster they can't run the
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: ball and tampa bay's offense has been non-functional as well
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: um I'm going to split the baby on this one.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: I'm going to take Green Bay, but I'm going to
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: take Tampa's points. I think this is a lobotomy game
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: for me. My brain doesn't know what to pick. Does
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: that make sense?
- 1:43:28Speaker 10: Yeah, Green Bay, super disappointing season. But I will go
- 1:43:32Speaker 10: with them to win and to cover.
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: Green Bay both ways? Yeah, I'm taking Green Bay both
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: ways as well. I really like Jalen Daniels, kid out
- 1:43:39Speaker 5: of Kansas. My family had a chance to hear him
- 1:43:43Speaker 5: speak at that banquet that my parents were honored at.
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: Last spring and came away really, really impressed. But that
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: doesn't make you a really good NFL quarterback, so I'm
- 1:43:53Speaker 5: taking the Packers.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: It doesn't make you Jaden Daniels.
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: All right. I will go with Green Bay as well,
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: both ways in this game. Okay.
- 1:44:01Speaker 6: Now we skip over the Patriots at 1 o'clock, and
- 1:44:07Speaker 6: we move to 4.05.
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: Miami 0-3 at Minnesota 3-0. Minnesota by 10.5.
- 1:44:11Speaker 12: Oh.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: This is the Brian Flores, another revenge game for him.
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't think of that.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: He's going to be throwing the house at your poor
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: quarterback there. I'm going to take Minnesota, and I just can't,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: especially on the road, I can't take points. I'll lay
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: the points, ten and a half of them.
- 1:44:35Speaker 10: Vikings, Vikings.
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: Yeah, normally I have a hard time on those spreads,
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: but not the way Miami's played, and the one guy
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: that you can rely on is out for the year
- 1:44:44Speaker 5: in baseball. Devon Aitken.
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: Aitken. So I'll take the Vikings.
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: Maybe to move to the most unimpressive 4-0 that you
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: can find.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: Hey, listen.
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: But 4-0 would be 4-0.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to take the Vikings both ways.
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: See, they lead the league in punts.
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: Yeah. They're 3-0, and they have punted more than anybody else.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a soft schedule.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: Soft schedule. All right, 425.
- 1:45:08Speaker 5: They did win in Chicago.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: Kansas City, 3-0 at the Raiders.
- 1:45:11Speaker 13: 3-0.
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: Something's got to give.
- 1:45:17Speaker 5: Kansas City by four and a half.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: Yeah, this is, I mean, Vegas has been pretty good.
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Like the Jets, I feel like, you know, got some veterans,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: kind of seem like they're competent this year. But I
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: don't think they're going to be able to do it
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: against Kansas City. I'm going to take Kansas City, but
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: I'm going to take the points for Vegas. I think
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: it's a close divisional game.
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:45:38Speaker 10: I also like the direction Vegas is headed in right now.
- 1:45:43Speaker 10: And I've been lucky with them picking them. However... Kansas City,
- 1:45:47Speaker 10: Kansas City.
- 1:45:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I have definitely been impressed with what Vegas is doing,
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: and believe it or not, if this game were in
- 1:45:55Speaker 5: Kansas City, I'd be more willing to look for a
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: frisky upset. But I think on the road, Kansas City
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: has their attention, so I'll take Kansas City both ways.
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: Plus, probably half the fans are going to be Chiefs
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: fans anyway.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that too.
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, this is a lock. Kansas City wins.
- 1:46:15Speaker 5: Oh, you won your lock last week, by the way.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: Oh, did I?
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: Your upset lock of the week was the Colts, and
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: they won.
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: There you go. Still got it. I still got it.
- 1:46:24Speaker 5: Even when he goes 4-12.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: He's got it. Still got it. Sorry, 6-10.
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: I'm going to go.
- 1:46:30Speaker 6: With Kansas City. I can't imagine a 4-0 Raiders team.
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: I just refuse to believe that.
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: Sunday, 4-25. It is the Chargers at 0-3. Against the
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: 2-1 Seahawks. Oh, God.
- 1:46:47Speaker 5: So I did a peek at the schedule, and without
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: anything out of the ordinary happening, they could open 0-9.
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: Yeah. The schedule is brutal for the Chargers. Seattle by seven. Yeah,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: coming off a.
- 1:47:02Speaker 6: Loss to Seattle's... Let's say Seattle did have the top pick,
- 1:47:07Speaker 6: or even the second pick.
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: Would you consider a quarterback?
- 1:47:11Speaker 5: Seattle?
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: I mean, to the Chargers.
- 1:47:13Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 1:47:13Speaker 12: Oh.
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: No?
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: No.
- 1:47:14Speaker 6: He wouldn't.
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: I wouldn't, but I understand the question.
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: What you need to do is get him to break
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: up with Madison Beer, and then you're going to get, like,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: mad Justin Herbert, who's, like, you know, out to prove something,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: and that would be more effective.
- 1:47:24Speaker 5: But I would take Jeremiah Smith.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. He's good at football. Give me San Fran
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: at home.
- 1:47:30Speaker 5: They're not playing.
- 1:47:32Speaker 7: Oh, sorry.
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: I was looking at Seattle.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: In his defense. I wonder why you guys do so poorly.
- 1:47:37Speaker 7: Our sheet is backwards.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Our sheet's backwards.
- 1:47:39Speaker 11: Sorry.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: I'll take Seattle at home, and I'm going to lay
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: the points.
- 1:47:44Speaker 10: I'll take Seattle. I'm tempted to split the baby.
- 1:47:49Speaker 17: Why not?
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: Split the baby?
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going to lay the points. Seattle, Seattle.
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to go with them too. Seattle, Seattle.
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, they're going to start talking about Jim
- 1:48:03Speaker 6: Harbaugh's job soon, don't you think?
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:48:05Speaker 5: I don't understand why he hasn't been under more scrutiny.
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: Sunday, 425.
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: Denver, a rare road game. 2-1 at the 49ers, 3-0.
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: Niners by three broncos second road game in four weeks
- 1:48:23Speaker 5: almost like half their games are.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: Away well that can't be because there's 17 games um
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: as i said before i'm gonna take san francisco um
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: you know hopefully that the the The Broncos seem like
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: they just start slow, and then they kind of start
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: to find it. That's been the last couple of weeks.
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: But I'll take San Francisco. I'll lay the points at home.
- 1:48:41Speaker 10: Bang, bang, Niner game.
- 1:48:42Speaker 5: Per day. So, yeah, I'm going to take San Francisco.
- 1:48:48Speaker 5: But I think this could be a good game. This
- 1:48:51Speaker 5: will have my attention on the red zone.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: Oh, great.
- 1:48:54Speaker 5: Mike, so when you're carrying the show postgame.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: As I always do. as you haven't really ever had
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: to do.
- 1:49:01Speaker 5: I'll be watching this on the Red Zone on that
- 1:49:03Speaker 5: channel right there.
- 1:49:04Speaker 6: Which defense has underperformed more, Denver's or Houston's so far?
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: I think they've both been just okay. Denver's been missing
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: one of their edge guys, Benito. He's been out too.
- 1:49:20Speaker 6: I could see myself picking Denver in this game, but
- 1:49:23Speaker 6: I'm going to go with the 49ers.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: Bo Nix annoys me. Just this whole He's just so, like,
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: he just seems such a hard, like, just so intense.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know. I just said he bothers me.
- 1:49:35Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: Okay. Well, you must really like Cam Scadable.
- 1:49:39Speaker 5: I love when 15-year-old Patriots fan Deuce comes out.
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: He just bothers me. He just bothers me.
- 1:49:44Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:49:44Speaker 10: He doesn't punch my face.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: He just kind of wins too much. He just bothers me.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: This is completely superficial, just how his face looks.
- 1:49:53Speaker 8: Face.
- 1:49:53Speaker 10: Some people have punchable faces.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: Sunday night, 820, Detroit, 2-1, at Carolina, 1-2. Detroit by
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: three and a half.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Well.
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: I think my Panthers, hopefully they get my Holy Cross
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: guy back because that would really bring them back into form.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the Lions, but I'm going
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: to take the points. I'm going to take the hook
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: for Carolina. I think it's a close one.
- 1:50:17Speaker 10: Lions, Lions.
- 1:50:19Speaker 5: I am going to do the deuce and take the points.
- 1:50:22Speaker 5: I just wrote it down incorrectly for Alex.
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: I have to fix that.
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: Hold, please.
- 1:50:26Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, I'm going to audit that.
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: I don't want to see any scratches.
- 1:50:28Speaker 10: Wait to see how the game plays out and fix
- 1:50:29Speaker 10: it after that.
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll take Detroit to win the game.
- 1:50:33Speaker 5: I'm worried about their defense, and Carolina was bad offensively
- 1:50:37Speaker 5: last week, and they were pretty good the first couple.
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: So I'm a little concerned about the Lions' defense, so
- 1:50:43Speaker 5: I'll take the points.
- 1:50:45Speaker 6: I am going with Carolina to win this game.
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I wanted to, Fred, but I think I still
- 1:50:51Speaker 5: believe too much in Detroit's talent to overcome the coaching.
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: That receiver is the real deal. All right, Monday night, 8-15.
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: Atlanta 1-2 at Nolans 1-2.
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: Nolans by 2.5. This could be a good game.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Great chance for Paul to break down Tyler Shuck. I
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: know you enjoy his quarterbacking. Shoot.
- 1:51:15Speaker 5: The ultimate playmaker.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: I think Atlanta is better than I kind of have
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: in my brain. So I'm going to go with Atlanta
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: on the road upset in the division here.
- 1:51:24Speaker 11: This is the first time I'm going to ask you.
- 1:51:29Speaker 10: Remind me of the spread.
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: Two and a half. Okay, you got to the last
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: game before you went to bed.
- 1:51:33Speaker 8: I know.
- 1:51:34Speaker 10: New Orleans, New Orleans.
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: I mean, there's probably like nine on that sheet that
- 1:51:37Speaker 5: you guys have.
- 1:51:37Speaker 10: It's two and a half.
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: It's two and a half. Thank you very much.
- 1:51:39Speaker 10: They've been pretty accurate lately.
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going to take Atlanta as well. I'm mad
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: at the Saints, so I'm putting them in probation for
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: a week.
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: It's Bichon, you know.
- 1:51:49Speaker 5: They burned me last week, Freddie.
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: Atlanta burned me.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: Very, very hurt.
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I could go either way in this. I'll go
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: with the home team. Which is the home team, Paul?
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: New Orleans. The Suns.
- 1:52:01Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: Now we go back.
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: Hopefully this one won't be fixed like that one after
- 1:52:04Speaker 5: the hurricane.
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: Right. We go back to one o'clock. It's the New
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: England Patriots.
- 1:52:10Speaker 6: At one and two heading to Highmark Stadium to play
- 1:52:14Speaker 6: the Buffalo Bills at three and oh.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: Oh, Highmark.
- 1:52:17Speaker 5: I'm just going to keep saying that every time someone
- 1:52:19Speaker 5: says Highmark Stadium. Bills by six and a half.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: Six and a half. It's disrespectful. Drop by a half
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: a point.
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the Bills in this one.
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: It's just they look really good. They've been impressive. The
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: Patriots haven't been impressive yet. I don't think it's Patriots
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: are dead in the water. I think they will show
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: a little bit more than they've shown through a first
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: few games. But it just it won't be enough at
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: this point. I'm going to take Buffalo 30 to 17.
- 1:52:48Speaker 11: Buffalo 28. Patriots 21. So maybe backdoor cover.
- 1:52:55Speaker 5: No, that'd be a cover for Buffalo. You sticking with 28-21?
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: What's the spread again? Six and a half.
- 1:53:01Speaker 10: I almost went through the whole time with asking you
- 1:53:03Speaker 10: only once.
- 1:53:05Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:53:06Speaker 5: So I'm going to take the bill. I just think
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: there's too much offense here. I wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: the Patriots' offense lessens the mistakes and increases the production
- 1:53:16Speaker 5: a little bit. I don't think Buffalo has settled in
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: on defense with their new coordinator yet, so I think
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: there will be opportunities. I just think it's going to
- 1:53:23Speaker 5: be hard to get any kind of a shootout unless
- 1:53:26Speaker 5: Buffalo does a lot to help them the way they
- 1:53:28Speaker 5: did last week, to the Chargers. They kept the Chargers
- 1:53:31Speaker 5: in the game doing that. So it's not out of
- 1:53:33Speaker 5: the realm of possibility. But I'm not going to, as
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: we always say, Fred, I'm not going to assume the
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: other team's going to play a bad game. I'm going
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: to assume they play a normal game. I'm going to
- 1:53:42Speaker 5: say 31-20 Buffalo.
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: 31-20. Okay.
- 1:53:49Speaker 6: Well, I can't, you know, I feel like a parent
- 1:53:53Speaker 6: who wants to give their kids something, but the kid
- 1:53:56Speaker 6: just hasn't earned it yet.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Yeah, sure.
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: So I'm looking at my son or daughter and saying,
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: I need to see this out of you before I
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: give you X. So I'm not going to give it
- 1:54:09Speaker 6: to you this week. I've got to pick the Bills,
- 1:54:11Speaker 6: but I'll pick the Patriots to cover.
- 1:54:14Speaker 10: Okay.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: You know, throw them alone.
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: Yeah, because like I said on Tuesday, I just want
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: to see them play better. Just play better. Make it
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: a game.
- 1:54:22Speaker 6: Make it so that we know you can play with
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: these guys, and then we'll deal with them later in
- 1:54:26Speaker 6: the season.
- 1:54:28Speaker 10: Nice moral victory.
- 1:54:29Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: What's your score? 27-21.
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: What is it?
- 1:54:34Speaker 7: Six and a half?
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54:36Speaker 5: 27-21 will work.
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:54:38Speaker 5: I always like to ask Fred the scores because it's like,
- 1:54:41Speaker 5: you know, 18 to 11.
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:54:42Speaker 5: Tell us something like that.
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: Four and a half to three.
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: Looking for back-to-back safeties.
- 1:54:49Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: Some misfield goals. So it's going to be a tough one. Yeah.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: I'm excited.
- 1:54:54Speaker 6: I'm excited to get back out there and see what
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: we can do, see if they fixed anything, see how.
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: Drake looks, see how that line looks.
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:55:02Speaker 6: You know, every week is a new week of discovery
- 1:55:05Speaker 6: so far this season.
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: And you get to see a new stadium.
- 1:55:07Speaker 6: Yeah, right.
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: I mean, that's what Brable said. He's like, at the
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: end of the last game, he's like, you just want
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: to get back out there and play. That's kind of
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: how I feel. I feel like there's a little less pressure.
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: I don't have a lot of expectations. I'm the same
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: way as you, Fred. I'll give them the benefit of
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: the doubt early in the season when we watch training
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: camp and we, you know, have some confidence, but They
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: got to earn it back now. They got to go
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: up there and have a good performance and start to
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: get this thing back on track.
- 1:55:27Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:55:28Speaker 11: I just worry like it's an understandable loss, but then
- 1:55:32Speaker 11: it's like, I don't know.
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: One in three.
- 1:55:35Speaker 10: Season can get away from you.
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: It can.
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: And the schedule is not going to be there for
- 1:55:40Speaker 5: you to just automatically right the ship with a 10-game
- 1:55:43Speaker 5: winning streak.
- 1:55:44Speaker 11: Yeah, like there's a lot of games that we thought
- 1:55:45Speaker 11: were gimmies that are not necessarily gimmies.
- 1:55:48Speaker 7: True.
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: I don't think any of them are, actually.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: But that's because of the Patriots.
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: Yeah, because of how we're playing.
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: Because I actually think if you look at the schedule,
- 1:55:56Speaker 5: there's a couple of games that I thought were going
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: to be pretty tough that look easier. Green Bay and
- 1:56:02Speaker 5: the Chargers. Two specific games that I thought would be
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: really tough to win that I Really think the Patriots
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: should win now.
- 1:56:10Speaker 6: But I think if you come out of this game
- 1:56:12Speaker 6: having competed and we could have had that one, I
- 1:56:16Speaker 6: think that will help you.
- 1:56:17Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: Next week against the Raiders. Come on here.
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: What's the matter, Alex? You're looking at Paul like, Paul,
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: please help me.
- 1:56:29Speaker 10: I just want to see a functional offense.
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: That's all.
- 1:56:32Speaker 10: I'm down. My spirits are down.
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: Well, okay.
- 1:56:36Speaker 10: Hope they pick them back up.
- 1:56:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I hope they can pick Alex's spirits up. Pick
- 1:56:42Speaker 6: Alex's spirits up game.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: And it is hard, though, like you said, Fred.
- 1:56:46Speaker 5: It's just hard to just automatically say, well, this is
- 1:56:48Speaker 5: the way. Unless you just, I mean, anybody can be
- 1:56:51Speaker 5: a fan and just say, well, they're going to be
- 1:56:52Speaker 5: better this week. Yeah, but it's hard to predict it
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: until you see it.
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:56:57Speaker 5: You know, it's been several weeks in a row of
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: kind of spotty production offensively.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like, what's the show me state? Missouri. You've
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: got to show me now. All right.
- 1:57:11Speaker 6: That's going to be it for Patriots Unfiltered. For everybody,
- 1:57:15Speaker 6: the gang, we will see you next Tuesday.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: If you really want to help us, make sure you
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: like us wherever you get your podcasts, like Apple Podcasts
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: or Spotify. Also, make sure you follow us on the
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: New England Patriots YouTube channel to see this show and

- 1:57:33Speaker 1: a lot.
