Latest / Mom Street USA / 44. Fighting Disney's Holiday Crowds
Transcript
- 0:04Welcome everybody to Mom St. USA.
- 0:06My name is Kate AKA the Dizzy Cicerone and with me as always,
- 0:09is my beautiful Co host Jackie AKA which is Mama.
- 0:12And tonight we're digging into a topic that I think is so timely
- 0:16because we're talking about fighting the holiday crowds.
- 0:19It's already pretty much started with with Halloween time and
- 0:23spooky season rolling and the crowds are are here and there's
- 0:27a lot of them and it's this is that time of year when it just
- 0:30escalates and gets to Thanksgiving and then we get
- 0:33Christmas and also New Year's after that.
- 0:35So the crowds get a little bit intense.
- 0:38So that's what we're talking about tonight.
- 0:41Jackie, how are you doing this evening?
- 0:42I'm good. I'm excited too, because I feel
- 0:45like I'm gonna take some of these.
- 0:48Tips and tricks that we came up with and used them on my next
- 0:51trip because I'm gonna be there really close to Thanksgiving
- 0:54time. So I have a feeling that the
- 0:56crowds when we're there are gonna be a little crazy.
- 0:59And that's okay. It is what it is.
- 1:01We kind of knew that when we booked our trip.
- 1:03Like, well, this is gonna be interesting.
- 1:06Yeah. Yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 1:08taking some of our own advice and utilizing here in a couple
- 1:12weeks when we go. You are a brave girl.
- 1:15I am, I am. I'm traveling in the holidays
- 1:18time, but not that close to the holidays so.
- 1:20Yeah. You know, when kids have school
- 1:22and you try your best to work around their schedule and my
- 1:25husband's work schedule, you know, it is what it is.
- 1:27So yeah, sometimes you you have to go during the holidays and
- 1:31that's why they are so crowded. It's not only because it's the
- 1:35the holidays themselves, but it is also, you know, kids out of
- 1:38school and all those kinds of things.
- 1:39So recognizing that some people can't choose to go other times
- 1:44of the year, that's what we're talking about tonight to help
- 1:47you, how do you get the most out of your Disney vacation?
- 1:50How do you, if you're feeling overwhelmed by the crowds, what
- 1:54do you do? What are some of the strategies
- 1:56you can use if you're if you just have to go during that
- 1:59really, really busy time? So that's what tonight is about.
- 2:03Yeah, and it's funny, I was thinking as we were prepping for
- 2:05this episode, I was like, OK, counting back, I have been to
- 2:08Disney during President's Day weekend.
- 2:11I've been to Disney during Easter weekend several times.
- 2:14I've been to Disney during 4th of July a couple times.
- 2:18I've been over Labor Day and now we're.
- 2:21I'm just working my way through the calendar.
- 2:24Goodness girl, so you? Know we'll we'll see how this
- 2:27one compares. Yeah.
- 2:29And I'm getting some comments too.
- 2:30Like it feels like it never quite calmed down after the
- 2:33major shutdown and it it just kind of has just keeps going.
- 2:37And I think that is true. We used to see like slow season
- 2:41versus like really busy season and now it's just like busy
- 2:45season and like busier season and every once in a while
- 2:48there'll be a random slow day. I feel like it's what it is.
- 2:50And it's it's a day like it's a day.
- 2:53It's not a couple weeks, it's it's a day.
- 2:55That you get like, oh, these crowds seem pretty good today
- 2:58and then the next day it's like super crazy again.
- 3:01It's like, well, that was nice. All lasted.
- 3:03Yeah, you just, it sounds like a bonus when all of a sudden
- 3:06there's light crowds and you're like, hey, this is great, but
- 3:08don't depend on it. But Speaking of which, so let's
- 3:12jump in here. Should we do?
- 3:15Before you go, let's talk about some things you can do as you're
- 3:17preparing for this vacation. Jackie, do you want to talk
- 3:21about the first first one? There, yeah.
- 3:22So this is something that I used to do.
- 3:25Like every single trip that I went, I kind of just have a IT
- 3:29ingrained in my brain now and I like don't even look it up most
- 3:32of the time anymore. But that is looking at Park
- 3:36crowd calendars. And now The thing is, these can
- 3:39be very hit or miss. So you definitely want to look
- 3:41at a couple different ones to kind of get an idea of what your
- 3:44week is going to look like. But it's one of those things
- 3:47where you know, if you're going the week of Thanksgiving, you're
- 3:50going the week of Christmas. To New Year's.
- 3:53You're going any of those other holidays that I mentioned just a
- 3:55little bit ago, you're going to be looking at the top level of
- 3:59those crowds. But it can be helpful if you can
- 4:03stagger your trip kind of one way or the other, and maybe not
- 4:06go directly over the entire week where it's going to be crazy
- 4:09busy. That may give you a better idea,
- 4:11but there are tons of crowd calendars out there.
- 4:14I know Touring Plans has one. I'm sure Disney Food Blog has
- 4:18one, you know, all those ones that we've talked about that
- 4:20we've used for different things on our show previously.
- 4:23But it gives you an idea. And typically they do like a
- 4:26green, yellow, red type of situation where they'll give you
- 4:29an idea of what days are what or what weeks are what.
- 4:31So just doing some Googling and looking up those Crowd calendars
- 4:35can at least give you an overview of if there's any days
- 4:37that are supposed to be really, really bad that you weren't
- 4:40expecting to be that bad. Yeah, And I'm getting a couple
- 4:44comments about how they go during Christmas week every
- 4:46year. And it's still, it's super
- 4:48slammed. And Taylor says this year,
- 4:50spring and summer holiday crowds at Walt Disney World have been a
- 4:52ghost town. So it like it.
- 4:54Like we said, it really depends on when you're going.
- 4:57But I really feel like consistently Halloween,
- 5:01Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't ever see those being
- 5:04like crowds. Never.
- 5:06No, I agree. We'll always be busy.
- 5:08Yeah, well, it's something that you have to consider is if you
- 5:12want to see those decorations, if you want to see your
- 5:15Halloween decorations, you want to see those Christmas
- 5:17decorations. Going earlier in those seasons
- 5:19is going to give you at least slightly less crazy crowds.
- 5:24So doing Halloween in September, doing Christmas.
- 5:30You know early in November, but you you you have to be careful
- 5:34with November depending on how much you want to see because not
- 5:36everything is typically done in November.
- 5:38So you just kind of got to gauge what's important to you.
- 5:41Do you just want to see Magic Kingdom or do you want to see
- 5:44all the resorts in the gingerbread house and all of
- 5:47that kind of stuff, You know, so you have to kind of gauge with
- 5:49that. But trying not your best not to
- 5:51go during those school break weeks is going to give you less
- 5:55crowds if you're able to fluctuate your your schedule
- 5:58that way. Absolutely.
- 6:00And yeah, that's something that I would always say is consider
- 6:02going early, earlier in November, but not so early like
- 6:06this for the For example, this year Disney World Christmas
- 6:08starts in November 11th, except for Epcot Festival.
- 6:12The holidays doesn't start until November 24th.
- 6:14So like you could get some of Christmas, but you won't get
- 6:17Epcot Festival. The holidays and Disneyland's
- 6:21Christmas starts November 10th. They're already put snow on
- 6:24their castle. It's it's October 19th and they
- 6:28put snow on the castle. So they're they're already
- 6:30starting prepping for that. But it's I I usually go and you
- 6:36can also do hangover. Christmas is what I like to call
- 6:40it at the Disney World, which is after New Year's.
- 6:45They still leave the decorations up and they start taking them
- 6:47down about two weeks after, you know, January 1st, like mid
- 6:51January. So they still play the Christmas
- 6:53music and everything after new after New Year's for the first
- 6:57week of January and a few days after that.
- 7:00And then you start seeing them take down stuff every day.
- 7:03So you can always go in the Christmas, Christmas hangover
- 7:05period as well. Just don't go like New Year's
- 7:07itself, because that's still pretty busy.
- 7:09But. Give it to like the 3rd or 4th
- 7:12at least before before arriving, but I do remember I think Magic
- 7:17Kingdom left their tree up like an absurdly long time.
- 7:21Past year, it was like almost Valentine's Day.
- 7:25Oh God, I'd say like it was really long.
- 7:27Like, I remember watching our friend Kirk, walrus, carp and
- 7:30lament Magic fans and trash cans doing their lives in the parks
- 7:32and being like and the trees still here.
- 7:37It's like by that time you're over it, like you want it to be
- 7:40done. Like we're ready to move on,
- 7:42give us back the normal music and the normal decor and all
- 7:45that. But they're like, Nope, this is
- 7:46still up. Yeah, Stars to Bright here says
- 7:51last year the decor was Halloween on October 25th, on
- 7:54Christmas, October 26th as far as the merch.
- 7:56So, like, it's true. Magic Kingdom does like a a
- 7:59changeover, like overnight. Like, suddenly it's just
- 8:02Christmas. Disneyland does a little bit
- 8:04more of a staggered, like, you don't see it necessarily
- 8:07instantly switch, but a lot of things do happen that day after
- 8:10Halloween, and suddenly they're like, here it is, you know, so.
- 8:14Well, in this year, the last there is a Halloween party on
- 8:17November 1st. I think that's the last
- 8:20Halloween party that they're doing is on November 1st, so you
- 8:23won't see. They may not switch it until the
- 8:262nd or the 3rd depending. I don't know, looking at a
- 8:29calendar to see like what day of the week or whatever.
- 8:31But the November 1st is the last Halloween party.
- 8:34So don't expect to see Christmas on November 1st if you're going
- 8:37to the parks this year, because it will still be Halloween for
- 8:39that day for sure. That's a good tip.
- 8:42Yeah, good to know. Yeah.
- 8:44In terms of also planning before you go, I would say because
- 8:49knowing that there's going to be extra crowds.
- 8:51If you really like, you know you want to do kind of all the
- 8:54things you always do or like you really want to see everything
- 8:58you know. Consider adding an extra day or
- 9:00two just to account for the time that you're going to lose
- 9:04waiting in line for stuff, because you will.
- 9:06And it won't just be like attraction lines, it will be
- 9:09bathroom lines, vendor lines, food lines, merch, shopping
- 9:13lines. There's just extra lines for
- 9:15everything during this time, so go into it knowing that and
- 9:19maybe account for an extra day or two so that you don't.
- 9:24You're the time you lose waiting in line.
- 9:26You can make up with another day if that makes sense.
- 9:29Yeah, absolutely. And the other thing that's
- 9:31helpful with that is you can be a little more strategic about
- 9:34some of the reservations maybe that you make.
- 9:37So thinking about like Advanced Dining Reservations, if you're
- 9:40planning on making those, really think about what time of day
- 9:44you're going to want to utilize those.
- 9:46I was going to talk about this later, but I feel like it's a
- 9:48little more pressing to talk about it now.
- 9:50But thinking about those time frames, we've always encouraged
- 9:53and talked about eating kind of at off times or not peak hours.
- 9:57That's especially helpful during this time, because the
- 10:01restaurants won't be quite as crazy.
- 10:03They're still gonna be full, they're still gonna be people
- 10:05everywhere. But you won't maybe have quite
- 10:07as many people trying to eat at quick service restaurants and
- 10:09things like that, if that's the route that you're going.
- 10:12But with Adrs too. Also piggybacking that off of
- 10:15like, okay, I know by this time of day my travel party is gonna
- 10:19be. Done.
- 10:20And they're going to need, you know, we don't want to go all
- 10:23the way back to the resort just because of the crowds and
- 10:25because of it being so crazy and lines everywhere, but we're
- 10:29going to need a break. OK, so maybe you schedule a 3:00
- 10:32ADR? So that way you can go sit down.
- 10:38Everyone has a seat, everyone has space to sit down.
- 10:40It's inside, yes. Or the heat if it's cold,
- 10:44depending on exactly what the weather does.
- 10:46Yes, but planning those accordingly.
- 10:49Now the trick is gonna be. Getting the ADR that you want at
- 10:55the time that you want, which is always a hassle no matter what.
- 10:59We talked about this on our last episode with character dining.
- 11:03It can be really hard to get character dining or certain AD
- 11:06Rs that you want. Especially when some of these
- 11:08places do special Christmas things, you know, or they do
- 11:12special events, or they have special outfits for the
- 11:15characters, whatever it may be. You really have to work hard at
- 11:19those Advanced Dining reservations.
- 11:20So one of the websites that I use is Mouse Dining and I have
- 11:25alerts set up through them that will help.
- 11:28If there's something that I'm that I haven't been able to book
- 11:31or haven't been able to do or haven't been able to get or it's
- 11:34not the time that I want or the the party size that I want, So I
- 11:38sign up there, you get I think, 6 alerts for free on Mouse
- 11:41Dining. So it's not even a paid
- 11:43subscription that you have to use, which is really helpful
- 11:46with that. But I think there's a couple
- 11:48other ones that you've used before, Kate, right?
- 11:50Yeah. And I want to mention some
- 11:52people are asking, so ADR means advanced dining reservation.
- 11:56So it's just Disney speak, that's all.
- 11:59So making a dining reservation in advance is an ADR, if you
- 12:02hear us refer to that. But the the one that I actually
- 12:05have used a lot in this past year, and I am, I'm Full
- 12:08disclosure, I am an affiliate with them, but I actually really
- 12:11recommend them because I I love it is it's called Unlocked Magic
- 12:16Dining Reservation Finder. And it's also like there's a
- 12:18whole unlocked magic like community of planning stuff.
- 12:21But specifically the Dining Reservation Finder.
- 12:24I know it's 599 a month, so you could just get it for just, you
- 12:28know, a month or two before your trip or whatever and and just
- 12:31get that and you know, that's enough.
- 12:32But it not only does it e-mail you when there's a reservation,
- 12:37it actually texts you. And so that I think is so handy
- 12:41because then you know instantly there's one.
- 12:43Because if we've told you before, as soon as that dining
- 12:47opens up for something, you have to be on it like very quickly
- 12:51because they go like that. So having it be able to text you
- 12:56is really helpful. And also you can have unlimited
- 12:58ones. So I've set a reminder like I
- 13:00was trying to get one for something and I I set one for
- 13:03like every single hour of the day for like 4 days of my trip
- 13:08because I just really wanted that reservation and I
- 13:10definitely got it. It took me a couple of days and
- 13:13then it pinged and I got my text and I did it.
- 13:16So that's called Unlocked Magic and I do have a link for that in
- 13:20my bio and we'll maybe put it in the show notes as well for you
- 13:22guys if you're interested in that, because that one is
- 13:26extremely helpful. So I think I'm gonna have to
- 13:28check that one out because I have struck out on my ones that
- 13:31I've been using. I think I need double.
- 13:33I need to keep my yes, keep my ones I already have and add some
- 13:37more because I literally this past week.
- 13:39So I have one set up for Topolinos and one set up for
- 13:42Ohana. And literally this week I was, I
- 13:45think, I don't remember. I think I was watching your live
- 13:47and the 11 for Ohana came through and I like I was not
- 13:50ready and I missed it and I was like no, oh that's so
- 13:55frustrating. I know and I was like that's the
- 13:57second time for this trip that I've missed one.
- 14:00So I may need to. I may need to add some more,
- 14:03some more alerts, yeah, Katie O says.
- 14:06She loves those pinks. They're so exciting.
- 14:08I agree. Like, you're like, oh, it's
- 14:09open. It's open.
- 14:10It's like Go. I was not happening.
- 14:13I was. I was not ready.
- 14:14I was I I let my guard down. I wasn't expecting it.
- 14:19I've I've, I've made a dining reservation like on a ride
- 14:22before because it pinged me in the middle of a ride.
- 14:24I was like, but you know I go on these rides all the time.
- 14:26So I don't recommend that. If it's like your only time to
- 14:29go on a ride. I just, you know, for me it was
- 14:31not a big deal and I made sure my screen was low and stuff so I
- 14:33wasn't bothering anybody. It was.
- 14:35Just like go, go, go and well, the nice thing is with those
- 14:38like you, it's really only like two or three pushes of a button.
- 14:42And it does it for you because it already has it linked and
- 14:45ready to go. Yeah, it pulls it up and it will
- 14:48ask you to sign in to your Disney account, and then it will
- 14:52pull up the reservation if it's there.
- 14:53Or it will come up with a little Lady in the Tramp and
- 14:56something's gone wrong. Or whatever it says and you're
- 14:58like, oh, sad. It means it's not available
- 15:00anymore. I do suggest if you have the
- 15:02ability to use like Face ID or something, that you have your
- 15:04Disney account set up for that because it will.
- 15:08It will take you directly to the Disney website and ask you to
- 15:10log in so the quicker you can log in, whether it's Face ID or
- 15:15whatever. I don't know what Android has
- 15:17its equivalent of that, but I don't know.
- 15:19Whatever that is, make sure that you have it set up, because that
- 15:23will save you the time typing. Don't even know.
- 15:26I don't know if you are an Android user let us know.
- 15:29But having to like sit and type in fingerprint, password, you
- 15:32will lose. You will lose it.
- 15:33It will not be available anymore.
- 15:35Maybe they have fingerprint, That's what he said.
- 15:37Fingerprint. OK, so whatever, that may be the
- 15:40quickest way possible that you can do it.
- 15:43Make sure that you're ready to go with that, OK?
- 15:46Everybody's saying bio, biometrics, fingerprints, that's
- 15:49what they got. Perfect.
- 15:50I yes, they do open. The reservations do open up 60
- 15:54days before your dining reservation, so 60 days plus the
- 15:59the length of your vacation for for Disney World and Disneyland
- 16:02if you're staying at a resort, but otherwise just 60 days from
- 16:06from the time. So now Disneyland is a little
- 16:09bit trickier because the time that it opens up, I've seen them
- 16:13all over the place. It's not like Disney World is
- 16:166:00 AM Eastern Time on the dot, SO3 P 3:00 AM Pacific Time, 6 P
- 16:246:00 AM Eastern Time for the 60 days previous for Disney World.
- 16:30But for Disneyland, it is. I've seen it at 6:00 AM.
- 16:35I've seen it 3:00 AM. I've seen it at midnight.
- 16:37It's like it. You just don't know.
- 16:39So I stayed up all night one time trying to get a blue Bayou
- 16:43reservation. It didn't happen.
- 16:44I was so mad. This like, didn't open them up.
- 16:46And I was like, great. So that's so sad.
- 16:49It's so sad. When that happens, you stay up
- 16:52late or get up early and you're just like, yeah, well, I was
- 16:56very tired the next day. It's one thing if you got all
- 16:59your reservations and it was worth it.
- 17:00And it was like, this is not worth it, right.
- 17:04Anyway, so that's that. Those are some suggestions for
- 17:08before you go of just kind of prepping for the holiday crowds
- 17:12some. I do have a couple of tips for
- 17:14traveling to Disney. I do so much flying.
- 17:18Like, I, my friend Kirk asked me this week.
- 17:21He's like, how do you do this all the time?
- 17:23Because I do it once a month. I fly to Disney.
- 17:25And he's like, he was exhausted because it's they had the time
- 17:28change, you know? And I was like, honestly, I'm
- 17:30just so used to it. I'm just like, I just work on
- 17:32the plane and I like know what I I have my routines and the
- 17:35things I put in my pouch and like I'm just so used to it.
- 17:39But I will say travelling during the holidays gets a little
- 17:42trickier, not only because everybody else is travelling,
- 17:44but also because of the weather. The weather can get really bad
- 17:47this time of year and there's a lot of snow in the middle of the
- 17:50country and what not depending on where you're flying or the
- 17:52eastern seaboard. So I would just say leave a lot
- 17:56of extra time for travel, especially with security lines
- 17:59can get extremely long. Don't you know like need maybe
- 18:02an extra hour for security? You know, like, especially if
- 18:05you've got Littles and they have needs and you've got strollers
- 18:09and car seats and extra bags and everything, just leave yourself
- 18:12a lot of times so that you're not stressed and worried about
- 18:16all those things. Same with leave some extra time
- 18:20in case your flight is delayed on either side of your vacation.
- 18:23So as you're like, booking your vacation, recognize that you
- 18:27don't want to plan something that's like the one thing your
- 18:30kids want to do. Don't plan it for, like, the
- 18:33morning of the next stuff for your first day.
- 18:36Nope, because you might not get there if there's a delay with
- 18:40your flight and then everybody's heartbroken and it's not like
- 18:43it's an easy thing to rebook. So just, you know, just just
- 18:48make a little buffer time there. And the same thing on the other
- 18:51side of your trip, coming back home knowing that it's possible
- 18:54your flight might get delayed or cancelled or something.
- 18:58So, you know, try to leave sometime so that you don't have
- 19:01to immediately go back to work or school or whatever it is.
- 19:05That's my best advice for that. Just leave a little time for the
- 19:08holidays. Yeah, I agree.
- 19:10I mean, I do that and we drive, yeah.
- 19:13I feel like I never want to, yeah, run off to something right
- 19:16when we get there and I don't wanna leave anything else till
- 19:19the last minute and I don't wanna have to be rushing off to
- 19:21something when we come home. So I agree.
- 19:24Even this trip that we planned, we have a whole buffer day
- 19:28between the day that we leave and the day that like my husband
- 19:31has to be at a thing for work. So we have a whole buffer day in
- 19:34between 1:00 because if we do get home on time, we're going to
- 19:37need to sleep and like readjust back to life in Ohio.
- 19:41But two, because even if we're driving, travel can be crazy.
- 19:46Like you said, we have to drive through mountains.
- 19:48There's snow in mountains, especially in November, December
- 19:51so. Having that the ability to know
- 19:54like, OK, we can stop and we're going to be fine on time, you
- 19:58know, if we need to stop somewhere overnight, let's stop
- 20:00somewhere overnight so we're so we're safe.
- 20:02Right. No, I agree.
- 20:04And I I do have a a comment too. It says, I always just do a
- 20:07hotel day during flying days and I think that's wise so that
- 20:11you're not immediately jumping into the parks and and you
- 20:14bought a ticket for the parks and you know, making making sure
- 20:18that you have that buffer time just for your own Peace of Mind.
- 20:23And also I will say this might be a little bit more applicable
- 20:26to Disneyland than Disney World depending on your personal
- 20:29transportation from the airport. But this was something, I take a
- 20:34lot of Lyft rides all the time. Now.
- 20:37I've met a lot of really fun Lyft drivers.
- 20:40I had a great one one time who was like talking about, he went
- 20:43to all these BBQ places all across the US and how he was
- 20:45writing a book about BBQ places and he told me all about it.
- 20:50It's nice you meet a lot of people when you do Lyft.
- 20:52A lot. So anyway, he was really nice.
- 20:55And he told me, that particular person told me that in Anaheim a
- 21:00lot of people will miss their flights out in the mornings
- 21:03because it's very hard to get rides in the morning back to the
- 21:06airport because some Lyft drivers just don't want to take
- 21:08it. So it'll just like somebody will
- 21:10get booked and they'll cancel and somebody will get booked and
- 21:12to get to cancel because Lyft automatically assigns it to a
- 21:14driver and if they don't want to do it, then they just kind of
- 21:16like say Nope, I'm not going to do that and you'll just get,
- 21:20you'll cycle through drivers to the point where you will be
- 21:22late. So the best thing you can do is
- 21:25to pre book your ride and pay for it in advance.
- 21:28You actually pay a better price usually anyway.
- 21:30Sometimes not, but usually pay a pretty low price.
- 21:33For that, have it booked in advance so you know that you're
- 21:36going to get it at least back to the airport so you won't be late
- 21:40for your flight. And I think this is especially
- 21:42true during the busy Christmas season.
- 21:46Make sure that you are pre booking your Lyft or Uber ride.
- 21:51Yeah, that's super smart. I've got a really good comment
- 21:53from Tiffany over here that mentioned always packing.
- 21:56Like if we don't get home right away, we have what we need.
- 21:59She mentioned she has a kiddo that needs some medicine that
- 22:02they want to make sure they have.
- 22:03So if your flight gets canceled, you may not have access to your
- 22:07luggage. So make sure that your carry on
- 22:10has your necessities in it. If it's medication, if it's you
- 22:14need a change of clothes. If it's formula and diapers for
- 22:17your kiddo or whatever it may be.
- 22:19Making sure that you have that packed in your bag especially.
- 22:23That's good for all times, but especially for these crazy
- 22:25holiday times. Yeah, that happens sometimes.
- 22:29When I did a red eye and I didn't get make my connection
- 22:32because of them, like their flight was delayed, I didn't
- 22:35make my connection and I had to stay overnight in a hotel and I
- 22:38didn't have my checked bag. I only had my carry on and I was
- 22:42so glad that that point I had put my pajamas and my toothbrush
- 22:46and stuff in my carry on. So yeah, very important with
- 22:51especially during the holidays just in case something happens.
- 22:54And we've all seen those horror stories of like people stuck at
- 22:56airports for hours and hours. Like just have some things for
- 23:01your family and for yourself that you need your necessities.
- 23:04I think is wise, especially during the holiday season.
- 23:07Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, Tran says.
- 23:10And your laptop, because, oops, my flight is canceled.
- 23:12Need to work from home? Yes.
- 23:16Yes, whatever you may need. If that flight gets canceled, or
- 23:19you miss your connection or whatever it is, just make sure
- 23:21you've got it with you. Yes, so wise.
- 23:25So do you have any other travelling to Disney or you?
- 23:27Don't think ready are we? Are we ready to do at the parks?
- 23:30Let's do it. This is, this is the getting
- 23:32down into the crowds here. All right, everybody breathe.
- 23:36There's a lot of people now. Breathe through it.
- 23:39Practice your your meditation, your calming techniques.
- 23:42Here. OK, so.
- 23:45We've got hopefully some good advice here.
- 23:47A lot of the stuff you actually probably will hear have heard us
- 23:49talk about before. My biggest suggestion is is use
- 23:53utilizing rope drop and early entry.
- 23:56So getting there early because there are a lot of people that
- 23:59when they run on vacation time they don't want to get up early.
- 24:03So if you can get there at rope drop, be ready to go tackle your
- 24:07most important rides first thing in the morning.
- 24:10The crowds are going to be lower than they will be in the middle
- 24:13of the afternoon just for that, just because of that.
- 24:16So you're paying attention to those park hours, making sure
- 24:20you know when the park is open and double checking it the night
- 24:24before. We've talked about this
- 24:25previously where sometimes the hours will change, especially
- 24:28during really crowded times, they will extend those hours for
- 24:32the parks. I've seen it happen.
- 24:35I've been at Trips. We've been on trips during the
- 24:384th of July where we were literally at Magic Kingdom and
- 24:42while we were there we got a notification that they had
- 24:44extended the hours that night because it was just so busy.
- 24:47So like I've literally been in the parks when it's happened, so
- 24:50just keep an eye out on that and just double check it and make
- 24:53sure check the signage in the park.
- 24:55A lot of the times they have the hours listed where they've got
- 24:57the wait times listed. Just take a glance and just
- 25:00double check yourself with that. And also paying attention to
- 25:03party days because that can heavily influence crowds.
- 25:07If it's a party day, if it's a non party day at Magic Kingdom,
- 25:11and then now this year also at Hollywood Studios, paying
- 25:15attention to when those Jollywood nights are because
- 25:17that could adjust crowds one way or the other depending that one.
- 25:22I don't anticipate it swaying crowds quite as much because
- 25:25it's only an hour earlier closure.
- 25:28So typically Hollywood Studios closes at 9:00, but for those
- 25:32Jollywood nights, it's closing. It's closing at 8:00.
- 25:35So not a huge difference, but we'll see what that does with
- 25:38the crowds whenever we kind of get to that point.
- 25:41But paying attention to those dates and planning accordingly
- 25:45based on what kind of tickets you have and if you're going to
- 25:47a party, you're not in those types of things.
- 25:49Yeah, no 100% agree. I'm getting a whole bunch of
- 25:52comments here about yes, rope drop is the way to go and how
- 25:55people ride so many rides during then.
- 25:57And also one that says my sister missed her 30 minute magic hour
- 26:01due to the line at the gate and got it normal opening.
- 26:03And that is true. You have to leave extra early,
- 26:06earlier than you think you have to leave to get those extra,
- 26:10that extra magic time. So it's a you really.
- 26:14It's like way earlier than you think it should be.
- 26:17I feel like it's like an hour and a half was what I left.
- 26:20Yeah. And it depends on and and it's
- 26:23somewhat depends on what mode of transport you take getting to
- 26:26the parks. But sometimes it doesn't.
- 26:29Like obviously the monorail to Magic Kingdom is not going to be
- 26:32too crazy, but even then, those monorails will fill up at the
- 26:36Ticket and Transportation Center.
- 26:37They'll fill up to the and then there won't be any room for you
- 26:40to get on if you're at one of those resorts too.
- 26:42So keep that in mind because they a lot of the times during
- 26:45really busy seasons, they utilize both tracks, whether it
- 26:48be just the Magic Kingdom loop or the resort loop.
- 26:51So just keep that in mind too. You want to make sure you leave
- 26:54yourself time in case you have to wait a couple monorails.
- 26:57Same with the sky liner you're going to when you hop off that
- 26:59hub where you, you know, connect to readjust which line you're
- 27:03going to. Those lines are going to be
- 27:05extra long, So just leaving yourself that extra time, we
- 27:09typically say leave 45 to an hour before.
- 27:11So I'd say at least probably an hour and a half is going to be
- 27:13in your best bet. Yes, 100% and streaming, Disney
- 27:17Darling says. I love with large crowds leaving
- 27:19midday and coming back later at night if I have a longer stay.
- 27:22And I yeah, that's a great strategy.
- 27:24We, we say always take a break in the afternoons if you can
- 27:28with Littles, just because it's it's a lot.
- 27:30They're long, long days in the park.
- 27:32So also considering doing a holiday party for one of your
- 27:36days instead of a ticket a day. And we have done this in the
- 27:38past with Mickey's Not so scary. It can be really helpful to
- 27:43utilize just your party ticket for that day.
- 27:46And not try to go in in the morning if that's a well needed
- 27:50break that your group might need.
- 27:52I will also say that we have seen historically in the past
- 27:56that if you're someone who's got a hopper and you're not going to
- 27:59a party. Those party mornings at like
- 28:01Magic Kingdom tend to be slower crowds.
- 28:05So if you're able to hop, you're able to start at Magic Kingdom,
- 28:07they usually have at a really early opening that day.
- 28:09So early entry is even better when if you can get there that
- 28:13early and then hop to a different park or maybe just
- 28:15that's a day that you know the afternoon and evening you're
- 28:18just going to take a break because you've got extra days
- 28:21planned or whatever it may be. But, but kind of playing around
- 28:25those hot, those holiday parties like we talked about can be
- 28:28really, really helpful. Yeah, I agree.
- 28:31And yeah, dreaming Disney dining says spend a day shopping or
- 28:35checking out resorts during party ticket days.
- 28:37That's also a really great option as well.
- 28:39I agree. I'd also say planning when
- 28:43you're planning your day, I would really focus on maybe
- 28:47working opposite what the crowds are doing.
- 28:49And we we talked about this a little bit in terms of like your
- 28:51dining reservations, you know, you know, tour early, doing an
- 28:55early lunch break, like as soon as those restaurants open and
- 28:58you know around 11:00-ish or 10:30 depending on what it is.
- 29:02And then doing early dinner as well, you know, like around
- 29:065:00-ish. And then and you can also then
- 29:10if you don't want to see the night time shows, you've already
- 29:12seen the night time show at that place, then you could do rides
- 29:15during those night time shows. So the crowds are all in the hub
- 29:19watching fireworks and you're riding all the rides because the
- 29:22lines are short, you know, So going where the people aren't is
- 29:25a great strategy. Be doing, doing, being weird, Be
- 29:30weird and do what people aren't doing.
- 29:32Do the unpopular things and that will help you a whole lot.
- 29:37Yes. And also using those park
- 29:39hoppers. If you're someone who you know,
- 29:41you're going to get park hoppers for your trip and you want to be
- 29:44able to have the ability to be flexible and move, You know if
- 29:48you get to a park in the morning and it's a couple hours in and
- 29:52you're like, this is not the vibe, then you check your app,
- 29:56you utilize your park hopper, you go to a different park where
- 29:59maybe you see. On your your app that the wait
- 30:02times are less or you know like hey we just want to go eat at
- 30:06World Showcase. OK that's a little bit more
- 30:08manageable than like waiting and rides.
- 30:10You know things like that that you can you can manipulate and
- 30:13use that park hopper and just have that flexible plan.
- 30:16You're going to have to know where you want to start each
- 30:18day, to know what time you need to get up and what time you need
- 30:21to leave and all those types of things, but utilizing those park
- 30:25hoppers, especially when it. Comes to those park hoppers are
- 30:30are going to be opened up all day in January.
- 30:33That doesn't help you necessarily for this current
- 30:36holiday season coming up, but future holidays starting in
- 30:392024, you'll have the ability to hop earlier in the day and
- 30:44definitely use those things to your advantage to help you kind
- 30:47of maneuver around the crowds. Yeah, And I'm getting a
- 30:51question, is it worth park hopping at Walt Disney World
- 30:54since parks are more spread out, travel time, shuttles, those
- 30:57things. And I it really depends on your
- 31:00budget and your family and how you like to tour.
- 31:04So like when I had really little kids, we just did one park per
- 31:08day and that was plenty. Like we just did like Magic
- 31:11Kingdom this day, Epcot on this day as my kids got older, like
- 31:16they want to do like the big rides over here and then we want
- 31:19to go and do the big rides over in this other park.
- 31:21And so it really depends on your family mix and also your budget
- 31:24because park hoppers are a lot more expensive than single day
- 31:27tickets. So I would say it can be worth
- 31:30it If you have limited time and you have the budget for it, I
- 31:34would say park hopping is is worth it, but I don't think you
- 31:37need to at Walt Disney World. I definitely think it's worth it
- 31:40at Disneyland because it's so easy to just walk across the
- 31:43Plaza to the other park and you can also take advantage of both
- 31:46nighttime shows. That way you can get from one to
- 31:48the other. So yeah, that's my take on it.
- 31:51I don't know if Jackie, if you want anything to add.
- 31:52Yeah, I agree. Even with my kids are five and
- 31:55seven, we still don't park hop usually.
- 31:57We usually do one park per day. But I will caution you during
- 32:02holiday times and that's specifically what we're talking
- 32:05about this evening. But during those holiday times,
- 32:07if you don't have more than one day at like Magic Kingdom.
- 32:12That's going to be really, really tough.
- 32:14So if you're doing the one day or one park tickets, you're
- 32:17going to want to make sure you you plan for a second day in
- 32:20Magic Kingdom. If you aren't able to schedule
- 32:24wise make that work, then I would maybe suggest doing the
- 32:26park hopper for that purpose just to make sure that you're
- 32:29able to get to some of those things.
- 32:31Because the other thing you have to consider is, especially at
- 32:34Magic Kingdom, the night time show is not every night because
- 32:39of those party nights. So if your Magic Kingdom day has
- 32:42to be on a party day or you're doing part of that, you're going
- 32:45to miss out on happily ever after because they don't show it
- 32:48on those party nights. Hollywood studios, it does look
- 32:52like they are doing a fantasmic for the day guests.
- 32:55Still, despite Jollywood, it's just early at 7:15 I believe.
- 33:00Whenever I looked on the website, that's what it showed.
- 33:03So not quite as as big of a deal there with that nighttime show,
- 33:07but with Magic Kingdom, you really want to make sure you
- 33:09give yourself enough time because there's just so many
- 33:11different things to do between attractions and shows and
- 33:14parades and fireworks and characters and all of that.
- 33:18Yeah, for sure. I did have a question here, do
- 33:21you have to buy park hop separately?
- 33:23And park hopping tickets are like just a separate kind of
- 33:26ticket that you purchase. So it's an it's an upgraded
- 33:30ticket from one part, one park per day.
- 33:32So if you do a package or whether you buy them separately,
- 33:35it's like you can either buy one park per day or you can buy park
- 33:38hopping tickets. So it's the kind of ticket and
- 33:42lens giving us comments about how you're not supposed to
- 33:46literally Bunny hop across the way at Disneyland.
- 33:49Which is so funny because I actually put that in my book.
- 33:52That I read it is in your book, and I think about that every
- 33:55time someone goes to park hop is I think about your characters in
- 33:59your book literally hopping across the Plaza and then
- 34:02crashing and getting hurt before they make it to the other one.
- 34:06Don't give it all away, Jackie. That's all I said.
- 34:08I'm not. I'm not saying anything else.
- 34:10That one is in my Where the Fireflies Dance book that's
- 34:13about Disney history, live streamers at Disneyland.
- 34:16So thanks. I will also mention just quickly
- 34:19while we're talking about park hopping and park hoppers that if
- 34:23you start with a base ticket, you do have the ability to
- 34:26upgrade your park ticket to a park hopper.
- 34:29But do keep in mind that regardless of what day of your
- 34:31trip you're on, you will have to upgrade your entire ticket.
- 34:35So if you've got a four day ticket.
- 34:37And on day two, you decide you want to upgrade it to a park
- 34:40hopper. You're going to have to pay the
- 34:42difference of the full four days, so keep that in mind.
- 34:46That's the way that Disney does it when you go to upgrade, So
- 34:49keep that in mind with your budget if you're wanting to do
- 34:53that. And Ryan asked a good question
- 34:55over here. If I don't have a Park hoppers,
- 34:57can I come and go in the same park all day?
- 34:59And absolutely yes you can. You can come and go as much as
- 35:02you please. With park Hoppers you can do the
- 35:04same come and go And with with whichever park you're visiting
- 35:07or parks you're visiting as much as needed, you will don't don't
- 35:10need to worry about that. The only issue is like Christmas
- 35:14Day and New Year's Day, if you leave, there is a chance that
- 35:20they could reach capacity before you're you come back.
- 35:23So it wouldn't necessarily be a a ticket issue, but it could be
- 35:27a capacity issue. So keep that in mind.
- 35:30I know New Year's Eve pretty much every year Magic Kingdom
- 35:36hits capacity. So paying attention to what time
- 35:39you want to get back by is really, really important because
- 35:43just because you were already there during that day, if
- 35:45they're already at capacity, they're not going to let you in.
- 35:48Yeah, that's a very good tip. Yep.
- 35:51We talked about planning extra time to get everywhere again,
- 35:54same thing as you go in the parks.
- 35:55What would normally take you walking from Haunted Mansion to
- 35:59Space Mountain? You know, maybe 10 minutes is
- 36:02going to take you at least 15, Probably just navigating through
- 36:05the crowds, especially if you've got strollers.
- 36:07Finding stroller parking is going to be more of an extensive
- 36:11process. So you've just got to leave that
- 36:13extra wiggle room for everything that you need to get to, whether
- 36:16it's dining reservations, whether it's.
- 36:19Lightning lanes, whether it's just one attraction to the
- 36:22other, just keep in mind it's going to take you longer than
- 36:25normal to get there. I do have a question from Joanne
- 36:29who says what do they do special on Christmas Day at Magic
- 36:32Kingdom And I'm pretty sure they have a parade, right?
- 36:35So they will do the parade that is featured in the very Merry
- 36:40Christmas party. Like the 23rd, 24th, 25th,
- 36:45usually. That's typically historically
- 36:47what we've seen. They will not announce it.
- 36:49They will not publicize it. They'll just do it just like and
- 36:52here's the parade. Yeah, and it'll just replace the
- 36:55parade. So that's typically what people
- 36:58go for because that's something from the party, which is an
- 37:01extra ticketed event that people will like to go and see without
- 37:06having to pay to go to the party.
- 37:08So if you want to see the reindeer and the tinsel, the you
- 37:12know, toy soldiers and all of that stuff in the parade and
- 37:14that does happen outside of part the party hours on like I said,
- 37:19typically 23rd, 24th, 25th, ish. That's the only thing that I
- 37:24know. If I don't know for sure if they
- 37:26do that with the fireworks too, I want to say they do but
- 37:29someone. Say if someone in here knows for
- 37:31sure. Lemm.
- 37:32If you're still in here, you probably know better than we do.
- 37:35But I think that they do the fireworks as well for the
- 37:38Christmas. I've heard rumors that they're
- 37:41going to start making it snow on Main Street more this year for
- 37:44Walt Disney World like they do at Disneyland.
- 37:46Like Disneyland has a special like they do a little castle
- 37:50lighting ceremony like multiple times during the evening.
- 37:53And when they do that, it's just like a quick like 5 minute thing
- 37:56and then they it snows on Main Street and for a couple of
- 38:00minutes after that and so it's like super magical.
- 38:03So I'm hoping that they put it on USA and Disney World as well.
- 38:07Jackie, do you want to talk about managing your party's
- 38:09expectations a little bit? Yeah, I think this is super
- 38:12important because whether you're using Genie Plus or not,
- 38:15managing your party's expectations for these lines
- 38:18because you may see a little bit longer waits even if you're
- 38:22using Genie Plus. But I do recommend you use it,
- 38:24especially during these holiday times if you're able to budget
- 38:27for it. And I this is one time of year.
- 38:31Or I suggest it pretty much at all of the parks, no matter
- 38:34what. If you're going during those you
- 38:36know, you've looked at your crowd calendars and all of your
- 38:38days are in the red, they're going to be really, really busy.
- 38:40I would just suggest budgeting ahead for that Genie Plus or
- 38:44those individual lightning lanes, whatever it may be, to
- 38:46help shorten the lines, but also having a plan if you end up
- 38:49waiting in a line longer than expected, especially if it's
- 38:54around a meal time if it's. You have to make sure that you
- 38:58know before every line you stop at the restroom for your little
- 39:00kiddos to make sure that they go having a snack, having some an
- 39:04extra game or something that you can pull out.
- 39:06You know, as parents we keep those little things kind of
- 39:09hidden away and as like a secret backup, pull those out in line.
- 39:13You know all of those things that you can do to help make
- 39:17sure. And I will say managing that for
- 39:20your little ones, but also the big ones that you travel with.
- 39:24Some of them may also need an extra snack in your bag, just in
- 39:29case we don't need the hangry adults in line as well.
- 39:34I know we've all experienced that one way or another
- 39:37somewhere, whether it's our family or something we've
- 39:39witnessed. So just having those things in
- 39:42your bag so that way you're ready and not leaving them in
- 39:45the stroller because you may not have easy access to get in and
- 39:48out the majority of the time. One person could run to your
- 39:51stroller if you need to, but having those on hand is super
- 39:55important, and Tran has a good one.
- 39:57The dumb, dumb lollipops are a savior.
- 39:59That's a really good one, because they don't.
- 40:02They won't melt very like they're they're fairly good in
- 40:05the heat. So if you're there during 4th of
- 40:07July or whatever it may be, but yeah, having having a little
- 40:10snack or a sucker or a little a new little fidget toy or
- 40:14whatever it may be, just have something and hopefully maybe
- 40:18you won't need it. And then yeah, on the way home,
- 40:20look, we have this cool thing, you made it through your trip.
- 40:22You can play with it on the plane on the way home or in the
- 40:24car on the way home, but having that will be very beneficial.
- 40:29Yeah. And for older kids to making
- 40:31sure that you have enough fuel rods or power banks and stuff to
- 40:35make sure if you're in line for a really long time to charge
- 40:38those devices, whether you're playing something as a family,
- 40:41like heads up or they're on, you're on your individual
- 40:44devices or taking pictures or whatever, just you might be in
- 40:48line longer than you expect sometimes.
- 40:50So just having something to charge your devices in case
- 40:53something goes down, I think is always good while you're waiting
- 40:56in line. So exactly.
- 40:59And also kind of mapping out and knowing where maybe if you need
- 41:03to step away from the crowds to the best of your ability when
- 41:07it's super busy, kind of knowing those places that you can go
- 41:11where it's not going to be quite so busy.
- 41:13Kate, do you want to talk about some of those?
- 41:15A lot of these we've mentioned before, but.
- 41:17Yeah. So baby care centers are great
- 41:20for kids who are are melting down.
- 41:22We've talked about that before. There's some quiet spaces in
- 41:25there. It's also good for kids with
- 41:26special needs and things like that.
- 41:28It gets like sensory overload and Disney World's we've talked
- 41:32about. Tom Sawyer Island is a great one
- 41:34to get away from from at all. Essentially has some great views
- 41:37and quiet spaces there. Tomorrowland Terrace, The Muppet
- 41:41Courtyard area in Hollywood Studios, The Aquarium in the
- 41:44Seas Building in Epcot, The Walking Paths in Animal Kingdom,
- 41:50Behind Flame Tree BBQ. Also in Animal Kingdom.
- 41:53If you're in Disneyland, I would recommend you can't do it right
- 41:56now. Because it's under renovation,
- 41:59but behind Fowler's Harbor usually, and also behind Pooh's
- 42:04Corner, the Hungry Bear Cafe at the top level kind of in the
- 42:07back, although you do have the the train on one side in the
- 42:10end, the cannon from the Columbia on the other.
- 42:12So if they're noise issues, just know that that does happen
- 42:15there, But it's usually a nice place to get away from from
- 42:18people for a bit. Also, the Golden Horseshoe is a
- 42:22great one. It's a it's a quick service
- 42:24restaurant, but especially in the off hours it's a little
- 42:26quieter in there and upstairs is one of my favorite places to
- 42:29just kind of like escape. And then in the Corndog Castle
- 42:35in DCA is a great one as well. There's kind of a seating area
- 42:38back there in California Adventure.
- 42:40Then also Paradise Gardens is a great place to sit there and
- 42:44it's it's really nice. It's a kind of like sitting in a
- 42:46garden. Behind Flo's VA Cafe is also
- 42:50great and they can watch the cars go by, so that helps
- 42:52entertain Littles a little bit. And then the world of color
- 42:55viewing area during the daytime is often a place, not
- 42:59necessarily shady, but it is place where kids can run around
- 43:02and have spread out just a little bit.
- 43:05And then the trail behind Grizzly River Run is also a very
- 43:07quiet place that's really peaceful and one that I've kind
- 43:11of found recently that I like is the seating area next to Smoke
- 43:14Jumpers Grill. It's it's shady and it's usually
- 43:18there's as long as it's not super, super busy for eating.
- 43:22There's places to sit there and you can you can.
- 43:25Oh yeah. And it's true.
- 43:26The Muppet Courtyard right now is a disaster because it's being
- 43:28reimagined. So maybe not the Muppet
- 43:30Courtyard right now. Same same with Palace Harbor
- 43:33right now. So these are all, if they're not
- 43:36currently under construction, that is a good point.
- 43:38Thank you for bringing that up. Yeah.
- 43:40And we also have done full episodes on beating the crowds
- 43:43and we've done episodes on traveling with kiddos with
- 43:46special needs. So some of these areas we just
- 43:49rattled off, we've mentioned in those along with a lot of other
- 43:51tips. So if you fall in those
- 43:53categories of special needs or you like really need tips for
- 43:56getting away from those crowds, those episodes are good for you
- 43:59to go back and listen to. We're just kind of hitting some
- 44:01highlights here to kind of give you guys a a refresher for
- 44:05holiday season. Talking about the holidays, I
- 44:08feel like. So something we haven't talked
- 44:10about a lot on Mom Street is meeting Santa.
- 44:12And I feel like that's a big part of your Christmas
- 44:16experience of going for for many people.
- 44:19And so the times for meet and greets or Santa is usually
- 44:22listed in your My Disney Experience app or your
- 44:24Disneyland app depending on where you're going.
- 44:27In Disneyland you'll see Santa is in the Redwood Creek
- 44:30Challenge Trail in California Adventure or it Poos thoughtful
- 44:33spot in Critter Country. So it's the two places where
- 44:37Santa does meet and greets. Do you want to talk about Disney
- 44:40World's? Yeah.
- 44:41So in Disney World, if you're in Magic Kingdom, he meets in the
- 44:45gazebo behind Yield Christmas Shop.
- 44:48And again, check those hours because a lot of the times he's
- 44:52in and out depending. So you want to make sure that
- 44:55you look at those hours and he is available during the
- 44:57Christmas parties as well. If that's a time that you're
- 44:59going that you want to try to meet him, then at Epcot he meets
- 45:03in the Odyssey Pavilion and at Epcot they also have a lot of
- 45:07like Saint Nicholas type storytellers that are kind of
- 45:11around World Showcase as well. So depending on your preference
- 45:14with that in Animal Kingdom, you can find him on a one of the
- 45:18flotillas which are the little barges that kind of float around
- 45:22in the waters there at Animal Kingdom.
- 45:26At Santa, Yes, that's not a direct like face to face meet
- 45:30and greet there at Hollywood Studios he has a motorcade that
- 45:34comes down Hollywood Blvd. So again, one of those waving
- 45:37situations, not a direct meet and greet.
- 45:40And then at Typhoon Lagoon you can find Santa on a bike in
- 45:43beach attire riding around which is like.
- 45:46It's really fun. So much fun.
- 45:48So much fun. I love that they do that there.
- 45:52I also know that last year they did.
- 45:55Santa in Disney Springs where you didn't have to go into a
- 45:58park so this might be a good thing to do on a break day or an
- 46:01off day when you don't have a ticket into the parks.
- 46:03You're doing that we're yeah we're going to try and meet him
- 46:05at Disney Springs as long as there's a virtual queue and or
- 46:08the line is not like horrendous. If there's not a virtual queue,
- 46:11we are hoping to find him in Disney Springs on our trip so.
- 46:15Yeah. So they did have a virtual queue
- 46:16last year for and it the drops were at 9:00 AM, twelve PM, 3:00
- 46:21PM and 6:00 PM. So we'll see what they are for
- 46:24this year. I don't think they've announced
- 46:25it yet, but look for that. Look for a virtual queue option
- 46:30if you want to meet Santa at Disney Springs and that That's a
- 46:33great way to not have to wait in line while you eat for meeting
- 46:37Santa, because those lines get long.
- 46:38Yes. And do keep in mind when you're
- 46:40planning that you have to be nearby Once Upon a toy to be
- 46:45able to enter those virtual queues.
- 46:47So plan accordingly to make sure again, leave yourself lots of
- 46:51travel time, all of those things that we've talked about to get
- 46:55to that location before the virtual queue opens.
- 46:59I don't know how quickly it goes, I'm not sure exactly what
- 47:04that looks like. But I do know that once your
- 47:06virtual queue is called, it's a fairly short process, just like
- 47:08you would anticipate it. The other, you know, if you're
- 47:10using like a lightning lane at the other rides and what I was
- 47:13reading online and doing research for my own trip, a lot
- 47:16of people said like 15 to 20 minutes total from the time you
- 47:19get in line to the time that you're completely done.
- 47:21So the virtual queue is the way to go in my opinion, if that's
- 47:26something that you are able to do and hopefully cross our
- 47:30fingers they have it. Again, I feel like it was
- 47:33successful. So hopefully Disney gives us
- 47:35that back again. But that happened last year, It
- 47:38was around November 11th or 12th I believe that that started.
- 47:43So here in the next month we'll we'll know for sure whether or
- 47:46not that's an option. Yeah, I hope so.
- 47:49I think that's a great one. So you don't have to necessarily
- 47:52wait in line, especially if you've got kids that are like
- 47:54just can't, can't do that and how fun is it that it's up to
- 47:58toys like one of the toy stores like that makes it even better.
- 48:01I feel like not that the, I mean the other locations that he
- 48:03meets are also really great, but like, I feel like that's super
- 48:05fun that he's at the toy store, so.
- 48:07I think my favorite one I've ever been to is in California
- 48:10Adventure and Redwood Creek Challenge Trail because it's
- 48:12like meeting him in the forest. That's cool.
- 48:14And they have, you know, like the little book that you can
- 48:16sign like what you want for Christmas and you can write it
- 48:18in and all those things. And it's just so much fun.
- 48:21I love that. And now you found a new
- 48:23something new with Santa, right when you were doing your
- 48:26research. I had never heard of this and I
- 48:28was like, this is crazy. So they have breakfast with
- 48:32Santa in Disney Springs at Maria and Enzo's Restaurante.
- 48:37This is a special ticketed event that begins November 24th.
- 48:41Includes a family style breakfast, visit with Santa and
- 48:44the elves, a family photo with Santa, some treats, holiday
- 48:49activities and also for those who are 21 + a Prosecco mimosa.
- 48:53So you can have a mimosa with Santa and meet Santa.
- 48:58I love that. That's.
- 48:59Fantastic. Yeah.
- 49:01So this they have seatings at 93945 and 10:00 AM.
- 49:07And it's $45.00 for kids and $69.00 for adults.
- 49:10And I was like, surely this has been already sold out.
- 49:12This has to be sold out already. And I looked and like, no,
- 49:15there's still lots of openings right now.
- 49:17So if you get on it right now, if you want to have breakfast
- 49:23with Santa, like what a cool opportunity that is.
- 49:27Yeah. So, I mean, I don't know of
- 49:29anywhere else or you have breakfast with Santa, so that's
- 49:31pretty neat. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 49:35I think that sounds super fun. I know.
- 49:36I wish I was looking at the dates.
- 49:37I was like, oh, those dates don't.
- 49:39They don't line up with when we're going to be there.
- 49:43Yeah, I wouldn't go by do it by myself.
- 49:45I feel like I'm that's weird, but I would do with my kids.
- 49:49But I'm like I could do it, but probably not going to do that,
- 49:52but you know, it would be fine. Just be me drinking with Santa.
- 49:59I mean, I kind of love that we just see Kate's very
- 50:09sophisticatedly drinking her mimosa, just chatting about
- 50:11Disney history with Santa Claus. He's.
- 50:15Like, what do you want for for Christmas?
- 50:17I'm like I'm already getting it, like I'm having a break with the
- 50:20mimosa. We just chatting it up.
- 50:23We're good. I don't need anything else.
- 50:27Oh, anyway, anyway, so. Other things that.
- 50:33I would say not. You know, like we talked about
- 50:35being weird during Christmas, right?
- 50:37To avoid the crowds. OK, so so also that applies to
- 50:43not only eating at odd times and things like that, but also
- 50:46applies to doing things that you have never done before.
- 50:49I think that Christmas is a great time for that.
- 50:52Or hot. Or Thanksgiving.
- 50:53Or Halloween. Anytime, when there's a lot of
- 50:54crowds in the parks. Go find something that you've
- 50:57never done at Disney and it might just end up being one of
- 50:59your new favorite things. You know, we always, like, we
- 51:02always want to do like the major rides and all those things.
- 51:04And yes, we love all those things.
- 51:05But sometimes you can explore something new and make a new
- 51:08memory that you didn't even know that like was possible.
- 51:11So there's things like A Pirate's Adventure in Magic
- 51:14Kingdom, Treasures of the Seven Seas, where you can go and
- 51:17explore and you make all these like little things happen.
- 51:20With like a It's like a scavenger hunt where little
- 51:22magical things happen when you go do them, which is really fun.
- 51:25Have you done this, Jackie? No, I've seen it, but I have not
- 51:28done it. It's one of those things that,
- 51:30like, I hope that we have time for every trip and it just
- 51:33doesn't happen. And this trip we're not going to
- 51:36have enough time in Magic Kingdom to make that work.
- 51:38So we'll have to save that in our our back pocket for the next
- 51:41trip. Elliot and I did it one time
- 51:43when it was like really crowded and we're like there's literally
- 51:46nothing else for us to do because everything has like hour
- 51:48long waits and we were just done.
- 51:50So it actually was really fun and we we enjoyed it and I think
- 51:54you get a little souvenir card from it as well when you compete
- 51:56admission. So that's that's a fun one and
- 51:59it's it's free. So it doesn't cost extra to do
- 52:01that either. So also I always recommend Tom
- 52:05Solyer Island and I know everybody's like.
- 52:07Every time I go over there when I'm live and people are like, I
- 52:10haven't been over here in like a decade or like I've never been
- 52:13there or like. And I get it because it's like
- 52:15you have to take an extra boat there and like, you know what is
- 52:18over there to do. But it's so peaceful and it's so
- 52:21much fun for kids especially. There's lots of little things
- 52:24for them to climb on and explore.
- 52:26It's like going to nature in the middle of Disney.
- 52:30So I definitely recommend that one.
- 52:32Also taking rides in the Liberty Bell if you're an animal Kingdom
- 52:35doing some walking trails. Going to shows you've never seen
- 52:39before. A lot of those shows have pretty
- 52:40high capacity. Just make sure that you're
- 52:42there, not at the time it starts.
- 52:44Like give yourself buff extra buffer time because it's the
- 52:47holidays, so you know at least 1/2 hour before the show starts,
- 52:50you know make sure you're in line.
- 52:53You can search for hidden Mickeys, which we've talked
- 52:55about before, and then at Epcot there's a bunch of things to do.
- 52:58Jackie, do you want to talk about that a little bit?
- 53:00Yeah. So Epcot during their festival
- 53:02the holidays has several different things that you can
- 53:04do. And we've talked about these a
- 53:05little bit in some of our other Epcot and holiday episodes.
- 53:08But they've got their cookie stroll that they do every year
- 53:10where you go around the different countries and World
- 53:12Showcase and you get to sample and taste different cookies.
- 53:18And then Olaf's holiday tradition expedition scavenger
- 53:22hunt, which you know how much I love the scavenger hunts at
- 53:25Epcot. I think there's so much fun.
- 53:28So that's one that you can do where you go around searching
- 53:30for the traditions. So like, if you are familiar
- 53:32with the holiday special from Frozen where on an Elsa are
- 53:36looking for their traditions, like it's just so heartwarming
- 53:40and I just love that one, but there's a fun scavenger out with
- 53:43that. And then like I mentioned
- 53:44earlier, they do have the storyteller.
- 53:46So every country and world showcase has a holiday
- 53:50storyteller that tells different perspectives on the Christmas
- 53:55story or various other holiday stories based on their country
- 53:59that they're located in. So that's a really, really cool
- 54:02thing to do, especially if you've got kiddos that like will
- 54:06be able to pick out some of the likes, similarities and
- 54:08differences, you know, maybe a little bit older that will
- 54:11really kind of listen to that. But that that's kind of one of
- 54:16those really unique things to Epcot that you can find as well.
- 54:20Yeah, I think it's really fun to get to introduce your kids and
- 54:23yourself to some of the traditions in other countries.
- 54:26I think that's really fun, yeah. And I will add to this kind of
- 54:29talking about doing things you've never done before.
- 54:31We mentioned the resorts and this goes for you know what?
- 54:34Whatever if if you're at Disney World or Disneyland.
- 54:36But going to the the resorts and looking at things that you've
- 54:39never seen before at the resorts during the holidays or the
- 54:43specific decorations that they have can be something fun too.
- 54:46Yeah, definitely. And if you're in Disneyland,
- 54:50they I like to hunt for Christmas trees in Disneyland
- 54:54because they have so many of them.
- 54:56They do in Disney World too, have a lot of trees.
- 54:58But there's more in Disneyland, because I actually compared
- 55:00notes. With our friend Kirk from Walrus
- 55:02Carp last year, I was like, do you have a Christmas tree in
- 55:04every single store on Main Street?
- 55:06And he was like, no, I was like, we have like themed Christmas
- 55:10trees at Disneyland on every single store.
- 55:12And they're all themed to that store, which is crazy.
- 55:15And they also have them in pretty much every land,
- 55:18especially the one in Adventureland is super fun in
- 55:20Disneyland. So just go on a hunt for
- 55:22Christmas trees and see which kind of Christmas trees you can
- 55:25find. Is a fun one.
- 55:26I love that. When it gets super crowded
- 55:28because then you're also in and out of stores.
- 55:30And sometimes during the day, the stores aren't as crowded as
- 55:33they are, you know, at night when everybody's doing their
- 55:35shopping. So, yeah, yeah.
- 55:38So that's that's a. One of the things that we like
- 55:40to do, so should we talk about specifically escaping the crowds
- 55:45when you're just like done and don't want to be around people
- 55:48anymore? Yes, absolutely.
- 55:51So something that I just started to touch on that we can kind of
- 55:54elaborate a little bit on, is escaping at the resorts.
- 55:57So you can visit any of the resorts on Disney World
- 56:00property. You don't have to be staying
- 56:02there to visit every resort as long as you're there late
- 56:07enough, because it doesn't happen right after Halloween.
- 56:09But every resort in their lobby areas will have a Christmas
- 56:12tree. Oftentimes they are themed to
- 56:15the location that you're going to.
- 56:17So depending on what what your vibe is, you may kind of
- 56:22handpick out some of the different resorts that you want
- 56:24to visit. Like I know Animal Kingdom Lodge
- 56:26is huge on our list this year that we're going to try to get
- 56:28to to hopefully see the Christmas tree there because
- 56:31that's like my kids, that's their thing, is the animals and
- 56:34all that. So being able to do that and
- 56:37just being able to explore the resorts too and walking around,
- 56:40there are so many really great pathways.
- 56:43I think every resort on property has like a walking path or
- 56:46running path that you can take. If you're someone that like like
- 56:50you want to just you need you don't want to be in the parks
- 56:53and you need to get out. Your kiddos maybe need to burn
- 56:55some energy off because they've just it's overwhelming and over
- 56:58stimulating taking some of those pathways.
- 57:01Keep in mind they're they're fairly long.
- 57:03So Dave, make sure you look at how long they are before you
- 57:06start your your walk or your jog with them, but.
- 57:10Some of them have playgrounds too, right?
- 57:13Yep. Resorts have playgrounds that
- 57:14you can utilize. They have different, different
- 57:18events and different things that are going on.
- 57:19So typically at your own resort you can get an idea of, you know
- 57:22different places have they have different movies, they have
- 57:25different activities that they do.
- 57:26And we've talked about a lot of this at the we talked about like
- 57:29activities to do outside of the parks.
- 57:31We highlighted a lot of the specifics with that.
- 57:33So that can be a really good episode if you're looking for
- 57:35what do the resorts have to offer.
- 57:37But they also have different holiday activities.
- 57:39So Google is your friend if you're looking for certain
- 57:41specific resorts trying to figure out maybe what they have
- 57:44to offer and those offerings do typically fluctuate week to
- 57:48week. So do keep that in mind as well
- 57:50that what you see online may not be exactly what you get this
- 57:53year. Yeah, that's good.
- 57:56We also talked about doing, you know, pool time, things that you
- 57:59usually do. Take a break in your room at
- 58:01your resort just to escape. We're just, we're huge advocates
- 58:04of taking a break. You haven't noticed by now.
- 58:06We're like, just just go take a break, do it.
- 58:08Or you can take a swim. Although I always didn't say
- 58:11take a if you take a swim, you also need a break after your
- 58:13swim because it's physically exerting and your body still
- 58:16tired. So, you know, try to pair that
- 58:19as well. Or yeah, then you can definitely
- 58:21take in one of your park activities, which at your resort
- 58:25you're staying at. There's there'll be a list of
- 58:27things that are going on during the day.
- 58:30So you can either find the sign that says that or ask at the
- 58:33main desk and they'll they'll let you know what's going on
- 58:36that day. And keep in mind that some of
- 58:39the resorts have more extravagant Christmas displays
- 58:41than others. So if you're looking for
- 58:44gingerbread displays or you're looking for a specific giant
- 58:47trees versus kind of more of a standard sized tree, definitely
- 58:50looking around to see what is available is is hugely
- 58:54beneficial. I mean, I just went through all
- 58:56of this research too because I was like, OK, I need to find
- 58:59what our, our top options are because this trip we know it's
- 59:02going to be crazy crowds and we've already planned like 2 1/2
- 59:05resort days because we know that's just what we're what
- 59:09we're going to do on this trip. So it was it was one of those
- 59:12things I was like, OK, I need to refresh and remind myself what
- 59:15resort has what and where we want to go and all of that.
- 59:18But everyone has something a little bit different to offer,
- 59:20so definitely keep that in mind. Yeah, and like I know was the
- 59:24boardwalk has like the gingerbread carousel usually,
- 59:27which is really unique. And then, you know, I don't know
- 59:30if this year they'll do it grand.
- 59:32Floridian usually has a great big gingerbread house, but
- 59:34they're under construction right now, so I don't know.
- 59:36Well, they the lobby is finished.
- 59:38Oh, it's what I've seen. So I think they finished the
- 59:42lobby construction. Maybe in enough time that they
- 59:45probably have planned to do some sort of a gingerbread house.
- 59:48See that? They'd finished it.
- 59:49I just saw it last. Yeah, it reopened.
- 59:51It's maybe been two weeks, 2 weeks, 3 weeks since they took
- 59:56all the walls down. It does.
- 59:59It doesn't look much different where they did the construction,
- 1:00:01but who knows what they were working on.
- 1:00:03So you know, it is something, right?
- 1:00:06They did something over there. But so I think, I think we'll
- 1:00:08be, I'm hoping because I have never seen the gingerbread house
- 1:00:12in existence in person before. So that's one.
- 1:00:15That's. On our list for.
- 1:00:18You can usually buy a shingle or whatever too of gingerbread
- 1:00:21shingle for the from, you know, not the actual houses sitting
- 1:00:24there, but they make them, you know, so on all those good
- 1:00:27treats that they make on the inside, like, I just, I just
- 1:00:30want to go, I'm ready, I'm ready to go.
- 1:00:33But yeah, so. So take a look at the different
- 1:00:35resorts and see what they have to offer to kind of hand pick
- 1:00:38out the ones that you want to visit.
- 1:00:41Another thing you can do to escape the crowds is go on a
- 1:00:44Christmas tree stroll in Disney Springs, which has been around.
- 1:00:49It used to be kind of like a Christmas tree walk and then
- 1:00:51like the world changed a little bit and then they made it a
- 1:00:54stroll where they just put the trees throughout that you can
- 1:00:56find. But in previous years, this has
- 1:00:59been a complimentary thing where they'll actually give you a map
- 1:01:02that has stickers on it that you can when you find when you put
- 1:01:05the sticker on it. And that would the locations for
- 1:01:09the map were it City Works, Planet Hollywood, Uniqlo, I'm
- 1:01:14saying that right, right. The Boathouse and Crystal Arts,
- 1:01:19those were the places in the past where it's been.
- 1:01:21They haven't really like announced where it is this year,
- 1:01:23but we're assuming it'll probably be similar.
- 1:01:29Yeah. So then you get a prize.
- 1:01:30Last year, I think it was a button.
- 1:01:32When you complete it so and it's free.
- 1:01:34I love that it's free and it's a fun thing to do.
- 1:01:38And do keep in mind because this is one that we were also looking
- 1:01:40at, it is it's fairly spread out.
- 1:01:44So like don't anticipate walking through within a minute, you
- 1:01:47know, a couple minutes. It is a it is a fairly extensive
- 1:01:51process because it stretches like the entire length of one
- 1:01:55side of Disney Springs. So definitely take a look at
- 1:01:58that map and kind of visualize because we I as I was looking it
- 1:02:02up, I was like oh, that is extensive, OK, I need to plan a
- 1:02:05little bit more time in my day to make sure that we have enough
- 1:02:08time to get through all of those Christmas trees because that'll
- 1:02:11be fun for for my family to do. Like, yeah, so you know, go and
- 1:02:16get your virtual queue for Santa.
- 1:02:19That's our plan. Or breakfast with Santa.
- 1:02:21And then get go see all the Christmas trees.
- 1:02:24So that's our plan is to get there, get our virtual queue and
- 1:02:27then start the stroll until our time gets called and then go see
- 1:02:30Santa and. Then finish our stroll.
- 1:02:32That's so wise. I love it.
- 1:02:34So that's we're hoping that that works out.
- 1:02:36I will report back after we get back and let you all know
- 1:02:39whether or not that worked. Out.
- 1:02:40Yeah, I want a year and yes, I will.
- 1:02:43I will keep you posted and I will probably also do some live
- 1:02:45streaming from my personal account while we're down there
- 1:02:47to show off some of the stuff that we're doing too.
- 1:02:49Because like I said, we're trying to do again stuff that we
- 1:02:53haven't done before or stuff that we just don't typically
- 1:02:55take the time to be outside of the parks and do.
- 1:02:58We're kind of focused on those experiences this trip.
- 1:03:01So I'm excited. OK, you go see Santa and I'll go
- 1:03:04to Jollywood nights and we'll you go to Jollywood nights too.
- 1:03:08I am, yes, just after you. So I would, I think when we are
- 1:03:12going to do our episode on Jollywood nights here in a few
- 1:03:14weeks, it's going to be between our two trips.
- 1:03:16So it will be your experience and my prep for what I have
- 1:03:20found too. We're just going to combine it
- 1:03:21all together. Well, I just think if they, if
- 1:03:24they do projected. Muppets.
- 1:03:26I think there'll be a revolt like they did at Epcot, like we
- 1:03:30need Muppets. I'm trying to not get my hopes
- 1:03:32up that way. I will be pleasantly surprised,
- 1:03:36but yes. I agree.
- 1:03:37Speaking of fun, I have just a couple of things that are more
- 1:03:41not necessarily escaping the crowds, but just kind of like
- 1:03:44just for fun to bring a little extra magic to your holiday
- 1:03:48trip. And this is a little bit more
- 1:03:50for like Christmas specific, but you could do it for Halloween
- 1:03:53and for other holidays as well. You can bring some Christmas
- 1:03:57lights for inside your room. Make sure you unplug them when
- 1:04:01you're not in your room, just for safety.
- 1:04:04And I also know you don't want to hang them from any fixtures
- 1:04:08in the room because you might potentially damage them.
- 1:04:10So that and that's kind of in the Disney rules as well.
- 1:04:12So, but you can lay them across tables and dressers and and
- 1:04:16things like that. Hang them in ways that aren't
- 1:04:18going to damage anything, and that just makes it a little bit
- 1:04:21more festive. And something we've done in the
- 1:04:26past just at home with our kids while we're driving around in
- 1:04:29the Christmas season as we get lights that we can plug into
- 1:04:32something inside our car and then decorate the inside of our
- 1:04:35car. And then we put on Christmas
- 1:04:37music and drive around and we're kind of like, you know, it's
- 1:04:39like a mobile Christmas mobile. That's awesome.
- 1:04:42I love that. I love that.
- 1:04:44I might have to steal that for future car rides.
- 1:04:48I think that would be fun. We do it when we go and look at
- 1:04:50Christmas lights too, like on the way, and we'll we'll have
- 1:04:53hot chocolate and stuff like that.
- 1:04:55But just if you're driving to or from the parks in Disney, or if
- 1:04:58you're driving to Disney in general, like for the holidays,
- 1:05:01I think it would be a really fun way to make it a little extra
- 1:05:03magical. And we always surprised our kids
- 1:05:05with it. We didn't tell them that we're
- 1:05:06doing it and then they get in the car and we're like
- 1:05:08Christmas, hey. So the other things you can do
- 1:05:15is things for your room and the interior of a room.
- 1:05:19You can get window clings for your mirrors, you can get a
- 1:05:22little mini Christmas tree, just a small one.
- 1:05:26Just but a reminder that you can't decorate any balconies or
- 1:05:29exterior of your rooms at Disney.
- 1:05:31They have rules against that just to maintain the appearance
- 1:05:36in the storytelling of the outside of the building.
- 1:05:38So keep everything on the inside, although I will say.
- 1:05:41That a lot of people in the value resorts really like to
- 1:05:45decorate their windows. Yes, that is the thing you see a
- 1:05:48lot of that with those big windows that that look to the
- 1:05:50outside walkway. So I think that you can probably
- 1:05:54get away with as long as things remain inside and you're not
- 1:05:57putting anything on the outside surface of your window.
- 1:06:00I would say you're probably, you're probably OK with window
- 1:06:03clings and if you use you know like suction cup type things to
- 1:06:07hang like lights or things like that as long as it's not
- 1:06:10something that's going to damage any of the property like we
- 1:06:12said. Right, but it just a little
- 1:06:15extra extra magic for your vacation.
- 1:06:18I don't know if you have anything else to add to that
- 1:06:20check. No.
- 1:06:21I've always wanted to decorate in our room and I've never done
- 1:06:24it. And now you're inspiring me that
- 1:06:27I may have to do it for this trip.
- 1:06:30Well, it's so funny when you go on Disney cruises, everybody
- 1:06:32decorates their door and put magnets everywhere.
- 1:06:35And all the walls in the Disney cruise are magnetic so you can
- 1:06:39hang things on your walls with magnets.
- 1:06:41So perfect. I wonder if the window like the
- 1:06:45edges of the windows or have any magnetic spots in the Disney
- 1:06:49rooms. I.
- 1:06:50Don't know. Now I'm gonna test it.
- 1:06:51I'm gonna bring a magnet to see what sticks to what.
- 1:06:54No. Now I'm curious.
- 1:06:55I could probably look it up because I'm sure people have
- 1:06:57blogs about detailing how they decorated their room and what
- 1:07:00they put where and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:07:02So I may have to look into that. Jennifer says the value resorts.
- 1:07:06The Mouse Keeping gives awards for window decorations.
- 1:07:10Oh, that's so fun. Yeah.
- 1:07:12So that's really fun. So decorate your window just on
- 1:07:16the inside? Yes, inside and nothing
- 1:07:19permanent. Nothing that will damage, right?
- 1:07:21Is that enough? Disclaimers.
- 1:07:22Are we good? I've.
- 1:07:25Only said it like 20 times, but I think it's important that
- 1:07:27people know that. Yeah, very true.
- 1:07:30So I think the last thing that I just wanted to mention on this
- 1:07:32episode, unless Kate, you've got anything else to add before we
- 1:07:35kind of move on, is I I suggest listening to podcasts and
- 1:07:40reading blogs and Youtubes on people who have done the
- 1:07:43holidays at the parks. We've got several episodes that
- 1:07:47can be helpful. We've mentioned some of them
- 1:07:48kind of throughout this evening. We've got episodes on all of the
- 1:07:52holidays and the parties. We've got traveling with special
- 1:07:55needs, like I mentioned, activities at Disney outside of
- 1:07:58the parks and no wait activities.
- 1:08:00We say no wait activities. Now some of those may or may not
- 1:08:05still be accurate for these Disney holiday crowds, but it'll
- 1:08:09at least give you an idea. And we've got episodes on Genie
- 1:08:12Plus and how to utilize that. So just going back through and
- 1:08:15kind of making sure that you've done enough research, We're very
- 1:08:18big on doing your research and planning out.
- 1:08:21And I think it's especially important at the holidays that
- 1:08:23you make sure you've kind of read through the information
- 1:08:26that's out and available to you. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:08:30So at the end of all of our podcast episodes, we have
- 1:08:33started a new segment called Ask the Moms where we answer a
- 1:08:36question from our Mom St. community.
- 1:08:39It can be related to the topic, unrelated to the topic about any
- 1:08:42of the Disney Parks, Disneyland, Paris.
- 1:08:45Also now that we've got some experience there.
- 1:08:47But our question tonight comes from our wonderful friend Allie
- 1:08:51Beth. She asked this on our Discord
- 1:08:54and her question was any advice on hotels and children who
- 1:08:58struggle sleeping in new places, solutions or tips and tricks for
- 1:09:02that? Yeah.
- 1:09:04Do you do you want to go first? Yeah.
- 1:09:06So I have actually experienced this first hand on my son's
- 1:09:10first trip. Getting him to sleep was a
- 1:09:15struggle. So something that I suggest is
- 1:09:20thinking about kind of what it's going to look like ahead of time
- 1:09:24and trying to maybe simulate that at home if you're able to.
- 1:09:29So like my son was 22 months and had never slept since.
- 1:09:32He was old enough to remember, had never slept in the same room
- 1:09:35as me before, and that was very distracting to him because he
- 1:09:40could see me from his pack and play.
- 1:09:43He would, and he would stand at the end.
- 1:09:44Mama, Mama. Yeah, literally.
- 1:09:49Literally. So I wish that thinking back, I
- 1:09:53would have done some prep maybe for that to help him adjust
- 1:09:57'cause that was the biggest issue that he had.
- 1:10:00We also did our best to simulate like the amount of light and
- 1:10:05things like that and stick to his schedule the best that we
- 1:10:08could. Try not to put him to bed too
- 1:10:11late. I mean, they're going to go to
- 1:10:13bed a little bit later because you're at the Disney parks if
- 1:10:15you want them to be able to experience fireworks and
- 1:10:17Fantasmic and things like that. But trying to keep them on their
- 1:10:21schedule as much as we could was helpful that way.
- 1:10:24He was napping at the right time and that way bedtime was close
- 1:10:28to the right time. So that way he was getting
- 1:10:30enough sleep because it was a longer process to get him to
- 1:10:33sleep. Yeah, we I had my first, my
- 1:10:39first child didn't sleep for so long.
- 1:10:43I just like I remembering it. I'm like it was awful and it is
- 1:10:48tough. It's travel.
- 1:10:49It always takes three days for kids to adjust to a new sleeping
- 1:10:53environment. So keep that in mind if you are
- 1:10:55losing your mind that it takes three days and that will might
- 1:10:59help you. To make it through the first
- 1:11:02couple days, I also things we used to do.
- 1:11:07We always travel with white noise, always.
- 1:11:09And you can get it on an app on your phone even if you don't
- 1:11:11want to bring like a small white white noise machine.
- 1:11:14There's lots of apps for white noise and now my kids.
- 1:11:17Constantly sleep with that. That like helped us when we
- 1:11:19travelled in Europe. They had white noise on and it
- 1:11:22drowned out the very loud sounds of Paris outside our window
- 1:11:27because that was a cat. We slept over a cafe and there
- 1:11:29was like, oh this is like alarms and oh gosh it was so much, so
- 1:11:33white noise is your best friend if your kid is used to that.
- 1:11:36But yes, simulating their their regular environment and we used
- 1:11:40to do something. We would analyze kind of our
- 1:11:42space in our room and try to figure out if there was a place
- 1:11:45to put like the pack and play. Where they couldn't see us, even
- 1:11:48if it was like in the front hallway, just making sure we had
- 1:11:51enough room to get out if there was an emergency, but like put
- 1:11:54placing it in a place where they couldn't quite see us really
- 1:11:57made a difference for that. My kids also like to bring, my
- 1:12:04older kids like to bring, you know, blankets and stuffies that
- 1:12:07are like their comfort ones from home, so that really helps a
- 1:12:12lot. So things that smell familiar
- 1:12:14and feel familiar to their skin. That that helps a lot.
- 1:12:18And then yeah, keeping to the your bedtime routine if you have
- 1:12:22one at home, you know, we used to do like it's been so long.
- 1:12:26We've been we used to do you know, bath and and book and then
- 1:12:30bedtime, you know, like it kind of do following the same routine
- 1:12:33that you always do so that they're familiar with that
- 1:12:37really helps a lot to get them settled.
- 1:12:39But just recognize it probably will take a couple days for them
- 1:12:43to adjust. And that's OK and that's normal,
- 1:12:46Yes. And take a breath and try to be
- 1:12:48patient because it's hard because you're exhausted,
- 1:12:51they're exhausted. But I always will say also, just
- 1:12:55in general, my mom advice in any aspect of of sleep, sleep,
- 1:13:00training, sleeping in a new place, whatever it may be, it's
- 1:13:02just consistency, trying to be as consistent as possible.
- 1:13:07And again, that ties into those routines, doing those routines
- 1:13:10exactly like you do at home and reacting to them in the same way
- 1:13:15that you do if they were to be in their crib at home.
- 1:13:18So for example, if at home, if you do more of a cry it out
- 1:13:22method, do that at the hotel to an extent.
- 1:13:24You also have to remember you have people sleeping around you.
- 1:13:27But you know, those types of things.
- 1:13:29Try, try to keep it consistent, try to be calm, try to breathe,
- 1:13:35and if you need to, to step out. My husband and I, when it got to
- 1:13:39the point where we were like, we can't, like we need to step
- 1:13:43away, we literally would step into the bathroom area.
- 1:13:46Bathroom. I was gonna say the bathroom
- 1:13:48just leave until they fall asleep Doors.
- 1:13:50Yeah. And we sat in there on our
- 1:13:52phones for about 20 to 30 minutes, depending.
- 1:13:55And usually we could we would be able to peek out and and he
- 1:14:00would crash and that was that was what ended up helping.
- 1:14:04And then it took about two nights.
- 1:14:07And then like the 2nd morning he woke up and was like, all right,
- 1:14:09mom and dad are still here, OK, we're good.
- 1:14:11And then like, after that it was, it was much easier.
- 1:14:13And then we all got sick. And then it was a whole
- 1:14:15different story. And then that was just bad news
- 1:14:17bears. But, But yeah, but like, giving
- 1:14:21yourself that moment to step out.
- 1:14:24Because like, typically if your kids have been in the same room
- 1:14:27with you a lot of the times, if you're at like a family's house
- 1:14:29or something like that, you can lay them down and leave the room
- 1:14:32so they're not staring at you while they're trying to sleep.
- 1:14:35It's hard to do that in a hotel room.
- 1:14:38Yeah. So yeah, it's tough.
- 1:14:40And anytime you walk around, I remember so much of us, like
- 1:14:43creeping around our hotel room and like, barely breathing,
- 1:14:46making sure they couldn't see us.
- 1:14:49Yep, Yep, And you have to be really smart.
- 1:14:52About the other thing I will mention is being really smart
- 1:14:54about dividing and conquering the like.
- 1:14:57Just family things that need done that night, whether it's
- 1:15:00unpacking your bag, repacking for tomorrow.
- 1:15:03We would do a lot of dividing and conquering.
- 1:15:05One of us would be with my kiddo when we only had one.
- 1:15:08One of us would be with him and getting him ready for bed, while
- 1:15:11the other one was like very speedily getting the stuff
- 1:15:14unpacked and repacked as much as we could the night before.
- 1:15:17And some of that may just have to wait for the morning,
- 1:15:19depending on your situation and what needs done.
- 1:15:22But thinking about those things, because you're not going to be
- 1:15:26able to do them after they're asleep most of the time, unless
- 1:15:29you have a really heavy sleeper that once they're asleep,
- 1:15:31they're out. Good for you.
- 1:15:34I'm good, no. So I'm just planning that ahead
- 1:15:40of time. I have a couple of comments
- 1:15:43here. Some advice.
- 1:15:45Star Sprite says I put washcloths over the little
- 1:15:47random lights in the room and a clip for the curtains.
- 1:15:50For cracks which you can use a clip.
- 1:15:52Sometimes I use the. I do this even when I travel by
- 1:15:55myself. I use the.
- 1:15:57The curtains or not the curtains that, sorry, the hangers that
- 1:16:01have the clips on them, if you turn them sideways, you can use
- 1:16:03those to clip the curtain shut. So that's then you don't have to
- 1:16:07bring one from home. And Nikki says sometimes there's
- 1:16:10an actual cribs available if you don't want to pack and play, but
- 1:16:13you need to call ahead. And my experience is sometimes
- 1:16:18those aren't always like the cleanest depending on where you
- 1:16:20stay. So bring some extra, like
- 1:16:23sanitizing wipes, just in case. If you're using one of those
- 1:16:26just for your own Peace of Mind, maybe it's just me and I, but I
- 1:16:29I will, yeah, I you're not wrong.
- 1:16:31And I will say especially cause a lot of kids tend to like on
- 1:16:35their cribs. So like you know that's a normal
- 1:16:37thing. But I will say if you're looking
- 1:16:39at pack and plays versus cribs, keep in mind that different
- 1:16:43hotels at on Disney World property offer different things.
- 1:16:47Like all the value resorts only have pack and place.
- 1:16:50They do not have any of the true cribs.
- 1:16:53Most of the cribs you're going to find at the deluxe level and
- 1:16:57moderate is going to be a hodgepodge mix of what they
- 1:17:00have. So keep that in mind.
- 1:17:02There are off property places you can rent from.
- 1:17:06We talked about that, oh gosh, in Episode 2 maybe of Mom St.
- 1:17:10way back when, when we were talking about kind of prepping
- 1:17:12for your trip and what to do ahead of time and we mentioned
- 1:17:15some different options there. So if that's something you need
- 1:17:17to look into, refer back to that.
- 1:17:18But there are places that you can rent them from.
- 1:17:21I don't know sanitary wise if those are cleaner or not than
- 1:17:24the Disney World ones. It's so hard to tell with Little
- 1:17:27Littles especially. So yeah just plan on on wiping
- 1:17:30some stuff down and also I would plan on bringing your own sheets
- 1:17:35for those as well. Yes.
- 1:17:38To make sure that you have one that's familiar to them, one
- 1:17:43that fits the you know I'm, I'm a big advocate of safe sleep.
- 1:17:48So you wanna make sure you have one that fits snugly on whatever
- 1:17:52surface you're using, if it's a pack and play specific sheet or
- 1:17:55a crib sheet, just making sure you you throw those in your bag.
- 1:17:58So that way your kiddo is safe. Sleep sacks, All of those types
- 1:18:01of things. Because sometimes they in those
- 1:18:03hotels, they'll like if they have a crib, they'll just tuck a
- 1:18:06flat sheet around it rather than having an actual fitted sheet on
- 1:18:10it. And I'm just like, that's a no.
- 1:18:13So yeah, bring your own cheese from home, especially because
- 1:18:16they also smell like home, which helps a lot too.
- 1:18:18So yeah, lots and lots and lots of tips for can you tell We both
- 1:18:23had tough sleepers. And the thing that got me was,
- 1:18:27my kiddo was a really good sleeper at home.
- 1:18:29So we got there and I was just like, oh, I did not prepare for
- 1:18:33this. I didn't, it didn't even cross
- 1:18:34my mind. I was worried about these
- 1:18:37hundred other things for his first trip and getting there and
- 1:18:40all of that. But it was just like, 'cause we
- 1:18:43even we were fortunate enough because we drove.
- 1:18:45We actually brought our own pack and play because we drove, we
- 1:18:49were able to do that. So I had done that much and
- 1:18:52thought about the sheet in the pack and play and like, OK, this
- 1:18:55will be familiar, that'll be good.
- 1:18:56But I hadn't even thought about the fact that like, we'd all be
- 1:18:59going to bed at the same time and he'd be able to see me as he
- 1:19:02was trying to sleep. So luckily, my daughter's first
- 1:19:05trip, she was much older, not much older and older enough that
- 1:19:09she was sleeping in the bed and it was much easier with her.
- 1:19:14I think one trip we got so desperate that we like took all
- 1:19:18of the extra pillows in the room and stack them at the end of our
- 1:19:20bed and made like a wall so they couldn't see us.
- 1:19:24I mean, it wasn't anywhere near their Crips.
- 1:19:26They couldn't pull the pillows in or anything, but it was like
- 1:19:28it just was enough that sorry, it was just like enough that
- 1:19:31they could not see us at all. And we just have to be careful
- 1:19:35not to kick the pillows off. It was like it was a last ditch.
- 1:19:38We are exhausted and we need to sleep now that's sure.
- 1:19:41Yeah, you do what you got to do. It's no and maybe that's one of
- 1:19:44those things that if you've got both parents with you on that
- 1:19:47trip, you you need to rotate out so you both get enough sleep
- 1:19:51that the next day can still be a successful day.
- 1:19:55Yes. And if you are in that season
- 1:20:00and it feels like it's forever and it's never going to be over,
- 1:20:03just know that it's not going to be forever.
- 1:20:06Your kids will outgrow that. Eventually they will sleep.
- 1:20:08I promise you. They will sleep and it will get
- 1:20:12easier. It will get harder in other
- 1:20:15ways. It'll get easier physically over
- 1:20:18the years. So just hang in there and know
- 1:20:20that, you know, take a deep breath and know that you're not
- 1:20:23alone, that a lot of other moms are going through this right now
- 1:20:26and that it's it's normal to need a break sometimes.
- 1:20:29And it's OK to advocate for yourself and say I need to step
- 1:20:32away from this right now because I'm frustrated, so.
- 1:20:34Yeah, just say absolutely, Kathy Diaz, a really good question.
- 1:20:38Can you ship a pack and play to your resort?
- 1:20:42I suppose you could. I don't know that it would be
- 1:20:45worth it because of the extra fees and pay, paying to ship it
- 1:20:49there and all that type of thing.
- 1:20:52Because then you'd also have to pay to possibly ship it back.
- 1:20:55And you know you have to pay extra package fees to receive it
- 1:20:58too, and you would have to go retrieve it from Bell Services.
- 1:21:01They wouldn't deliver that to your room because it's a
- 1:21:03package. So I if anything I would use a
- 1:21:07rental company, maybe from a local rental place.
- 1:21:10That would probably be the way I would go with that if you needed
- 1:21:12to. Yeah, unless, and I mean if you
- 1:21:15really are super worried about the the hygiene and how clean
- 1:21:18those are then maybe that's worth the extra hassle and and
- 1:21:22cost to you. But so I would think you would
- 1:21:23be able to because you can ship packages to your your resort but
- 1:21:27like Kate said you'd have to go down and and pick that up and
- 1:21:29haul it up to your. So it depends.
- 1:21:33It depends on how much it's you know if you have the budget for
- 1:21:35it and you think your kid would sleep better than go for it you
- 1:21:38know. But I probably that wouldn't be
- 1:21:40my advice to do that, if that makes sense.
- 1:21:43And Kathy said you could buy one there and then donate it when
- 1:21:45you're done. And I have seen people do that
- 1:21:47with like umbrella strollers and things like that.
- 1:21:50Or they'll leave it. Like there's lots of Facebook
- 1:21:52groups for the resorts where people will leave stuff behind
- 1:21:56in like laundry spaces or or right outside their rooms.
- 1:21:59Or, you know, that type of thing.
- 1:22:01I don't know that I necessarily advocate for that because I feel
- 1:22:03like sometimes it makes more work for mouse keeping if
- 1:22:05they're having to clean up all these extras.
- 1:22:07But you could possibly look into something with with a donation
- 1:22:12if you if it's if it works with your time frame to be able to do
- 1:22:15that on your way out. Absolutely.
