Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Byron Buxton hurt as Twins lose three of four to Royals
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: The Twins dropped three of four to the Royals over
- 0:05Speaker 1: a long weekend series Byron Buxton is hurt. Royce Lewis
- 0:09Speaker 1: is back in the majors, and the struggles have continued
- 0:11Speaker 1: and or resumed. I guess I should say for him,
- 0:14Speaker 1: it was a tough weekend pretty much all around. Dan
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Twins one Friday night's rain delayed game the second
- 0:20Speaker 1: of the series, and then lost a couple of close ones,
- 0:23Speaker 1: a couple of one run games over the weekend to
- 0:26Speaker 1: leave with a pretty sour tone, I would say overall,
- 0:28Speaker 1: after a three to four home stand that started out
- 0:31Speaker 1: with two wins against the White Sox and ended with
- 0:33Speaker 1: four losses in five games.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, the road trip was the same way that ten
- 0:39Speaker 2: name road trip. You start off with the sweep in Boston,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you end up losing six of the last seven games there.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's been a difficult like that seventeen game stretch was disappointing, difficult.
- 0:51Speaker 2: You knew it would be, especially given that they were
- 0:54Speaker 2: dealing with the injuries they were with Bailey over and
- 0:56Speaker 2: Kendrey Rojas and being shorthanded on pitching a little bit
- 1:00Speaker 2: and on length. But to go seven and ten in
- 1:04Speaker 2: that stretch to go three and four on the homestand
- 1:07Speaker 2: when you had four winnable games against Kansas City. You know,
- 1:12Speaker 2: I'm sure they're very glad to be resting today and
- 1:14Speaker 2: not having a game for the first time in eighteen days,
- 1:17Speaker 2: but probably a little bit of a bad taste or
- 1:19Speaker 2: a lot of a bad taste in their mouths right now,
- 1:21Speaker 2: just because you know, they're struggling and it is a
- 1:26Speaker 2: long way to get back to five hundred at this point,
- 1:30Speaker 2: and this is where you were hoping, you know, that
- 1:32Speaker 2: you take up some ground and get there, get you know,
- 1:36Speaker 2: get healthy against the team that is also struggling. Instead,
- 1:39Speaker 2: you're staring at a thirty and thirty seven record in
- 1:41Speaker 2: a seventy three win pace, you know, with I don't
- 1:45Speaker 2: know what are we at just about fifty five shopping
- 1:49Speaker 2: days until the August third trade deadline, So not not
- 1:54Speaker 2: optimal weekend for.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The twenties August this year, it seems late, it is.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And I think that they picked a random I don't know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I don't know how they pick it, but they decided
- 2:05Speaker 2: to make it a little bit more flexible the last
- 2:07Speaker 2: couple of years. So it's been July thirtieth one year,
- 2:10Speaker 2: it was July thirty first. Now it's August third. I
- 2:14Speaker 2: think that's a Tuesday. I know the Twins are off
- 2:17Speaker 2: that day. Nothing ever happens on the It's Monday, August third.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Nothing ever happens when the Twins are off on the
- 2:24Speaker 2: trade deadline. Oh wait, last year they were off on
- 2:26Speaker 2: the trade deadline. They traded ten guys and a bunch
- 2:29Speaker 2: of them were in a hotel room together in Cleveland watching.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So yeah, it's uh what it was like. I don't
- 2:37Speaker 2: even know where to start with the weekend. I mean,
- 2:38Speaker 2: we probably should break down Saturday's loss because that was
- 2:42Speaker 2: so attainable.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, we forgot some I forgot to mention the top
- 2:46Speaker 1: of the show, this is Twins City's Territory, whatever the
- 2:49Speaker 1: hell that is, or Minnesota Twins podcast here on the
- 2:52Speaker 1: Foul Territory Network. And yeah, Dan Saturday, it marked Royce
- 2:57Speaker 1: Lewis's return. It was also the first game after in
- 3:00Speaker 1: Buxton's injury, which we'll talk about later too, And it
- 3:03Speaker 1: was Joe Ryan start that. Joe Ryan was doing Joe
- 3:06Speaker 1: Ryan things and mowing people down. The Twins took a
- 3:09Speaker 1: two to one lead into the ninth and then things got.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Harry, Yeah, it was set up for a great win.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Order Jensen hit home to start the game off Joe Ryan.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Joe Ryan didn't allow another run over six and kept
- 3:23Speaker 2: doing Joe Ryan things. And Arcia comes off the bench
- 3:28Speaker 2: and hit to pinch hit home run in the bottom
- 3:30Speaker 2: of the eighth inning with two outs to take the
- 3:32Speaker 2: one lead. You know, you're tied, you're going looking like
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're going to extras and instead you're you're all of
- 3:38Speaker 2: a sudden ahead, and unfortunately, you know, lead off Eric
- 3:44Speaker 2: Orzy comes on for the save in the bottom of
- 3:46Speaker 2: the nine or the top of the ninth, leadoff single
- 3:49Speaker 2: pinch runner Tolbert's. Kansas City always has a Tolbert. They
- 3:53Speaker 2: always have Gore or they always have one of those
- 3:56Speaker 2: speedy guys that you know is going to steal a base,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and what do you know he did, and ors he
- 4:02Speaker 2: gets the comebacker and Tolbert was leading pretty far off
- 4:07Speaker 2: the bag, and so Eric Orsey went to second base
- 4:11Speaker 2: there to get him, and unfortunately that basically allowed the
- 4:16Speaker 2: run or runner got back enough in time to be safe.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And so all of a sudden, instead of having an
- 4:23Speaker 2: out or the lead out lead runner out, your runners
- 4:27Speaker 2: on first and second, and I'm at that point with
- 4:30Speaker 2: Kansas City, you kind of know that they're gonna get
- 4:34Speaker 2: the run in. They're just that team that always figure out,
- 4:37Speaker 2: figures out a way to get the run in. And
- 4:39Speaker 2: you the bunt and then the sackfly and Bobby Witt
- 4:44Speaker 2: comes up and bases open, you know, man on third
- 4:49Speaker 2: and two outs and Bobby wits up and they they
- 4:53Speaker 2: pitched to Bobby Wit, and uh not that the pitch
- 4:59Speaker 2: location was bad, Like we just went over it a
- 5:02Speaker 2: few minutes ago and looked at it and I was like,
- 5:05Speaker 2: that was a splitter from Eric Orzy. That's probably what
- 5:08Speaker 2: eight inches above the ground. Six inches above the ground,
- 5:11Speaker 2: not very high, but that's Bobby Witt hit it and
- 5:15Speaker 2: put it in play. And look, I know, Vinnie pass
- 5:20Speaker 2: Quantino is tough and you don't want to put another
- 5:23Speaker 2: run around base. And Bobby Wit gets on first with
- 5:26Speaker 2: the intentional walk, he's probably gets steal second. And if
- 5:29Speaker 2: pass Quantino gets a hit, that's two runs and that's defeating.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But also Bobby Wit hit it. Pitch those eight inches
- 5:36Speaker 2: off the ground, it was probably exactly where Eric Orzy
- 5:39Speaker 2: wanted it. If not, you know, like I would bet
- 5:42Speaker 2: it's exactly where he wanted it. Bobby Whit still finds
- 5:46Speaker 2: a way, and so I don't know, Like it's probably
- 5:50Speaker 2: why I don't want to pitch Bobby Wit like I'm
- 5:52Speaker 2: always of that mind. And I thought the Twins did
- 5:54Speaker 2: a really good job. They've gone it Jose Ramirez earlier
- 5:57Speaker 2: in the year a couple of times and challenged him
- 6:00Speaker 2: and survived. But those guys, I just don't like pitching
- 6:05Speaker 2: to those guys in those spots with bases open. And
- 6:08Speaker 2: Bobby Wood's got seventy three hits now in sixty six games.
- 6:11Speaker 2: He's having a down year. Zach, He's having a down year,
- 6:14Speaker 2: and he still has a one to twenty nine ops
- 6:16Speaker 2: plus seventy three hits. He's three point seven war right now.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I thought that was that was just challenging. And then
- 6:27Speaker 2: you get the Cody Clemens doubles to lead off the
- 6:29Speaker 2: ninth inning and Josh Bell strikes out, and I think
- 6:33Speaker 2: Austin Martin struck out. So you don't move the runner over,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you get the walk brings up Royce Lewis potential storybook
- 6:41Speaker 2: ending for Royce Lewis. Gary ten, he was pulling hit
- 6:44Speaker 2: by pitch. Okay, yep. Yeah, okay, and that was so
- 6:48Speaker 2: that game.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Sorry to cut you off, but it started yeah, yeah, sorry.
- 6:53Speaker 2: It started with.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Royce Lewis appearing to beat out an infield grounder and
- 6:58Speaker 1: then upon review, the call was reversed and he was out.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It was the correct call. But I can't help but
- 7:05Speaker 1: think in the world of intangibles that for a guy
- 7:07Speaker 1: who had struggled so mightily that he had to be
- 7:10Speaker 1: demoted to Triple A, that having that be your first
- 7:14Speaker 1: at bat back in the in the big leagues is
- 7:17Speaker 1: just deflating to think, feel like you beat it out
- 7:19Speaker 1: and you got like, all right, I got the you know,
- 7:21Speaker 1: got the first one out of the way, I got
- 7:22Speaker 1: on base, and then to have it reviewed and called back,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and then the game ends, as you said, with him
- 7:26Speaker 1: coming up with the game on the line and he
- 7:29Speaker 1: has his one strikeout of the weekend.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was a good at bat. It's not
- 7:36Speaker 2: like it wasn't a good at bat. He took some
- 7:38Speaker 2: close pitches, but three to two, you know, called strike three.
- 7:43Speaker 2: It's a challenge. Look, I'm not at all putting like
- 7:47Speaker 2: when it comes to Royce two games back, I'm not
- 7:52Speaker 2: looking into it too deep, like that's just you know
- 7:54Speaker 2: what I mean, Like you can't you can't judge it
- 7:57Speaker 2: off of seven play appearances, eight played appearances and say,
- 8:02Speaker 2: oh he's fixed, fixed, you know what I mean, Like,
- 8:05Speaker 2: that's that's not fair. Anybody can struck out. It still
- 8:08Speaker 2: stinks for him. Yeah, Lang has got some pretty good stuff.
- 8:13Speaker 2: He was a closer, had twenty six saves a few
- 8:16Speaker 2: years ago for a reason. But still just disappointing just
- 8:20Speaker 2: for I'm sure Rooyce wanted that so bad. And and
- 8:24Speaker 2: they to not move that's another thing. So you like
- 8:29Speaker 2: you have that top of the ninth and unfold the
- 8:31Speaker 2: way it is to get the leadoff double in the
- 8:34Speaker 2: ninth and Cody Clemens doesn't leave second base is a
- 8:37Speaker 2: very disappointing result. Three strikeouts there in the ninth, So that, yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 2: there's deflating loss because that would have put them at
- 8:46Speaker 2: eight and eight on the sixteen straight games at that point,
- 8:49Speaker 2: that would have secured a winning homestand and you followed
- 8:52Speaker 2: up with Sunday and a clunker on Sunday.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Sunday, they fell behind six to one, five to
- 9:00Speaker 1: one after five, the Royals added one in the eighth.
- 9:02Speaker 1: The Twins try to come back in the ninety four
- 9:03Speaker 1: runs there, but it came up short, so another one
- 9:06Speaker 1: run loss on Sunday. They're now thirty and thirty seven,
- 9:10Speaker 1: which matches a season worst for games under five hundred
- 9:14Speaker 1: at seven. They were sixteen and twenty three a little
- 9:17Speaker 1: while back, so and it's just that was a homestand
- 9:21Speaker 1: where they probably needed to show out a little bit
- 9:24Speaker 1: more than that against the Kansas City team that has struggled,
- 9:27Speaker 1: a Chicago team that they're going to have to chase
- 9:29Speaker 1: down if they want to have this be a season
- 9:32Speaker 1: that goes beyond, you know, the first weekend of September
- 9:35Speaker 1: and they.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Game up short. Now off to Detroit.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Like you said, Dan, it has been a long stretch
- 9:41Speaker 1: of baseball, and hallelujah for them to have a day
- 9:43Speaker 1: off today, I'm sure, and we'll see if that helps
- 9:47Speaker 1: sort of rejuvenate them going forward. If you like what
- 9:51Speaker 1: you are listening to, we hope you do. Hope you
- 9:54Speaker 1: liked our Pablo Lopez interview on Friday as well. If
- 9:56Speaker 1: you miss that, go check that out. But we'd love

- 10:31Speaker 1: chance to call your shot with Daily Dingers. You can
- 10:33Speaker 1: just go to FanDuel dot com right now and basically
- 10:37Speaker 1: you're picking somebody to hit a home run in their game.
- 10:39Speaker 1: If you're right, you get a profit boost to use
- 10:41Speaker 1: on your next bet for a chance at extra winnings.
- 10:46Speaker 1: If you're unfamiliar with the program, we're very good at
- 10:51Speaker 1: this as collectively anyway, as a podcast. To be fair,
- 10:55Speaker 1: we do get three picks or two in this case
- 10:58Speaker 1: since Tyler is not here today, so it makes it
- 11:02Speaker 1: a little bit easier. But we have five times out
- 11:05Speaker 1: of six correctly picked a twin to homer later that
- 11:08Speaker 1: day in the game. Now they're obviously not playing today,
- 11:11Speaker 1: so we will when we get to that portion, we'll
- 11:14Speaker 1: pick for a Tomorrow night's game, Tuesday nights game. But
- 11:16Speaker 1: this seems like a good time to talk about Byron
- 11:18Speaker 1: Buxton as well.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Dan.
- 11:19Speaker 1: He obviously has carried us through the Daily Dinger segments
- 11:24Speaker 1: a lot. I think he's hit two or three of
- 11:26Speaker 1: those home runs we've called and obviously has a ton
- 11:30Speaker 1: of them. This is what is he at eighteen now
- 11:32Speaker 1: for the season something like that.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, he's at eighteen. He's killing it, and yeah he's
- 11:37Speaker 2: having a fantastic year once again.
- 11:40Speaker 1: But he crashed into the wall during Friday night's game.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That's actually if I also didn't mention the Dan and
- 11:49Speaker 1: I worked for the Athletic and you can read about
- 11:51Speaker 1: that story right now on the Athletic. Dan wrote about
- 11:54Speaker 1: his injury on Friday and he missed the weekend, wasn't
- 11:58Speaker 1: in the lineup and what is the latest with him?
- 12:01Speaker 1: And what are the twins thinking there?
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so full disclosure. I was not at the series
- 12:09Speaker 2: this weekend. I was home celebrating my birthday and taking
- 12:12Speaker 2: a happy birthday. But that's allowed. I think, thank you, Hey,
- 12:17Speaker 2: I was twenty seven again. It's wonderful, you know, if
- 12:20Speaker 2: you just stay twenty seven forever. No, he crashed into
- 12:24Speaker 2: the wall, has a shoulder contusion. So just based off
- 12:29Speaker 2: of talking checking in with the other reporters and seeing
- 12:32Speaker 2: what they were gathering, it didn't seem like it's like
- 12:36Speaker 2: super serious. A couple of things, a couple of contacts
- 12:39Speaker 2: clues that he didn't go for imaging on Friday night,
- 12:42Speaker 2: he did not have an MRI on Saturday. Those are
- 12:45Speaker 2: always good signs, like when guys are heading to the
- 12:48Speaker 2: MRI machine. I think those things cost forty grand a pop.
- 12:52Speaker 2: You know, that's something serious for the team to be
- 12:54Speaker 2: for any any organization to go ahead and say we're
- 12:58Speaker 2: going to spend forty grand. They are very concerned and
- 13:01Speaker 2: the twins are hyper aware and alert of things, so
- 13:05Speaker 2: they MRI guys sometimes even when it might not need
- 13:08Speaker 2: to be happening like they they are they are. I
- 13:11Speaker 2: think they're very cautious, and in a very good way,
- 13:14Speaker 2: do you know what I mean, Like not like paper
- 13:17Speaker 2: cuts go get right, but I mean they they definitely
- 13:21Speaker 2: take care of their guys and make sure that they
- 13:23Speaker 2: are just even on the confidence factor. But so there
- 13:27Speaker 2: was no MRI for Byron Buckston right. Derek Shelton's quotes
- 13:31Speaker 2: I believe before Sunday were it was very close Byron's
- 13:36Speaker 2: you know, he made it seem like it was a
- 13:38Speaker 2: smaller issue. So with the day off Monday, I would
- 13:42Speaker 2: think Tuesday is in play. I am not going to
- 13:45Speaker 2: pick Byron bucks In for our daily diners on a
- 13:48Speaker 2: on a spec play, given that's the only time that
- 13:50Speaker 2: we lost and I haven't for that one. But but like,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be a long term thing.
- 13:59Speaker 2: This is shoulder. He was dealing with the shoulder contusion.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Before that. He had slid into second base at Boston
- 14:07Speaker 2: and dinged up the shoulder, and that's why we hadn't
- 14:09Speaker 2: seen him in center field quite as much as we
- 14:11Speaker 2: had before. Like, so I would think he'll be in
- 14:15Speaker 2: the lineup. I don't know if it'll be in center
- 14:16Speaker 2: field and relatively soon, but I mean they need him,
- 14:20Speaker 2: They need that spark, you know. They they ended up
- 14:22Speaker 2: with five runs on Sunday, but the offense was quiet
- 14:25Speaker 2: till the ninth inning. They ended up with two runs
- 14:27Speaker 2: on Saturday without him. Barron bucks and makes this thing go.
- 14:31Speaker 2: That's how it always has been. And you take a
- 14:34Speaker 2: guy with a one thirty seven ops plus out of lineup,
- 14:38Speaker 2: it's it certainly makes a difference. So I think we
- 14:42Speaker 2: should see him soon. But you know, they missed him
- 14:45Speaker 2: for sure. Over Saturday and Sunday.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Well on Tuesday night, it'll be Troy Milton for the Tigers.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Twins head back on the road and are in Detroit
- 14:54Speaker 1: for three games and that's it. Then back to Target Field,
- 14:57Speaker 1: so quick, little one series road trip. Melton in three games,
- 15:02Speaker 1: three starts this year, doing pretty well. One point seventy
- 15:05Speaker 1: four e r A two and oher has allowed one
- 15:09Speaker 1: home run so far. Right handed pitcher, what do you think, Dan,
- 15:14Speaker 1: who's gonna be the who's going to hit the big fly? I?
- 15:17Speaker 2: You know what, I I'm gonna go with Ryan Jeffers,
- 15:23Speaker 2: just kidding, he's not on the roster. I just wanted
- 15:24Speaker 2: to mess mess with you there. How about we go
- 15:30Speaker 2: with Royce Lewis. I'm gonna pick Royce Lewis here and Melton,
- 15:37Speaker 2: Like one home run from Melton allowed, so not gonna
- 15:41Speaker 2: be an easy customer guy that they probably haven't seen
- 15:43Speaker 2: very often. I'm gonna leave because you did the stats
- 15:47Speaker 2: on the other guy and and the red hot guy.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I'm gonna let you have him. Uh fair enough, you
- 15:55Speaker 2: know Melton. Yeah, Melton gave up you know, seven homers
- 15:59Speaker 2: last year. He'd pitched mostly in relief he's only got
- 16:03Speaker 2: about seventy one career innings so far and eight home
- 16:07Speaker 2: runs in that span, but it's going to be a
- 16:10Speaker 2: challenge for them to get him. He pitched against the
- 16:14Speaker 2: Twins last year, it looks like once and just two
- 16:19Speaker 2: scoreless innings in relief, so most likely that was August.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Most likely. You know most of this team was around
- 16:26Speaker 2: in August, this current version of this team, so maybe
- 16:29Speaker 2: they remember them. But two innings is not a lot
- 16:30Speaker 2: of to sample size, so it's going to be a
- 16:32Speaker 2: tough challenge. But let's go with Royce just for the
- 16:34Speaker 2: storybook portion.
- 16:36Speaker 1: It's an inspired pick that would be amazing. Twins fans
- 16:40Speaker 1: would be very happy if you're correct. Yes I will,
- 16:43Speaker 1: so I prepare to slide for my pick. About The
- 16:49Speaker 1: only bright spot offensively, at least from the weekend for
- 16:52Speaker 1: the Twins was Cody Clements seven for sixteen against the Royals,
- 16:57Speaker 1: three multi hit games. It continues a a pretty good
- 17:01Speaker 1: month for Cody since May tenth, twenty five games, hitting
- 17:05Speaker 1: three oh three, five homers and eleven RBIs. I tend
- 17:10Speaker 1: to not want to pick the person who's on a tear,
- 17:14Speaker 1: just because I feel like it's always somebody don't expect,
- 17:17Speaker 1: but we're gonna go with Cody Clemens. So it all
- 17:19Speaker 1: comes down to Royce and Cody to keep the streak alive.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Although the revenge game for Cody Clemens.
- 17:25Speaker 1: We should probably whenever we can, uh, whenever we talked
- 17:29Speaker 1: to Tyler next, we should probably get his pick and
- 17:32Speaker 1: just like tweet it out for the record so that
- 17:34Speaker 1: we get that third that third chance to be right.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yeah, why don't do you want me to do Tyler
- 17:40Speaker 2: Voyce and I'll pick a third guy now, Cody Clemens
- 17:44Speaker 2: a revenge game. He was the third round pick of
- 17:46Speaker 2: the Tigers in twenty eighteen. It's where it all started.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And he didn't get much of a look there before Philly,
- 17:54Speaker 2: So I mean he got to I think parts of
- 17:57Speaker 2: two seasons with the Tigers, No, just the first season,
- 18:00Speaker 2: and it wasn't you know, he was not in his
- 18:04Speaker 2: element at that point. But uh yeah, revenge game, good pick.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I like it.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Well, if you want to play daily Dingers, you do

- 18:51Speaker 1: Going back to one of the big topics of the
- 18:53Speaker 1: weekend in royce Lewis's return to the to the major
- 18:57Speaker 1: league lineup. Obviously tore it up in Triple A and
- 19:00Speaker 1: certainly earned his spot back here, but the Twins are
- 19:03Speaker 1: trying some different things with him in the field.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yeah, gotta start at second base, gets start at first base,
- 19:12Speaker 2: you know, moving around, especially like that last week in
- 19:16Speaker 2: the minor leagues. It was like, we're not gonna We're
- 19:18Speaker 2: looking for versatility. So they you know, I can't remember
- 19:20Speaker 2: what day the sequencing went, but he got to start
- 19:24Speaker 2: at second base at Triple A. Then he comes and
- 19:27Speaker 2: goes and gets to it first base and did a
- 19:30Speaker 2: session with Justin Morneau actually where he morena. I texted
- 19:34Speaker 2: him about it, and he called it a crash course
- 19:36Speaker 2: essentially for Royce Lewis, getting the chance to spend an
- 19:41Speaker 2: hour with him at first base and kind of learning it,
- 19:45Speaker 2: and like you know, he he played when he got
- 19:49Speaker 2: to the majors. This weekend, he played second base to
- 19:52Speaker 2: start Saturday's game, moved the first base towards the end
- 19:54Speaker 2: for the ninth inning, and then played first base on Sunday.
- 19:58Speaker 2: That's important to them. They're gonna like brooks Lee was
- 20:00Speaker 2: moved off shortstop to third base, and I don't think
- 20:05Speaker 2: that they want to move brooks Lee again as possible
- 20:07Speaker 2: that you know, they'll look at this, especially if the
- 20:11Speaker 2: way they played defense earlier in the homestand with the
- 20:14Speaker 2: five errors from shortstop, it's possible they would go, hey,
- 20:17Speaker 2: maybe we should put brooks back there, but they know
- 20:19Speaker 2: what that is. It's limited. It's not like brooks made
- 20:22Speaker 2: you know, only had two errors in all that time,
- 20:24Speaker 2: but he doesn't get to everything. And I think they
- 20:26Speaker 2: think they're better this way, So I don't know that
- 20:29Speaker 2: they would move brooks again, which means Royce is going
- 20:31Speaker 2: to have to be adaptable. And I think Royce Lewis
- 20:33Speaker 2: said he's comfortable playing second he's gotten there and has
- 20:38Speaker 2: his head wrapped around it, and it'll be more learning
- 20:42Speaker 2: first base. And that's a he can handle it from
- 20:45Speaker 2: a bunch of ways. But when you see it, sometimes
- 20:48Speaker 2: you'll see guys not knowing understanding the footwork and the
- 20:51Speaker 2: positioning and they'll get dragged into the baseline trying to
- 20:54Speaker 2: get balls. In fact, there was a weird play earlier
- 20:57Speaker 2: in the homestand with Jacob Gonzalez playing first base for
- 21:00Speaker 2: the White Sox. He's a shortstop I believe Byron Buxton
- 21:04Speaker 2: kind of like collided at like chess level when Gonzalez
- 21:08Speaker 2: was getting a ground ball late. If you're Monday or
- 21:10Speaker 2: Tuesday night, weird things can happen. So Royce Lewis, I'm
- 21:14Speaker 2: sure wants to build up his time there. They just
- 21:19Speaker 2: they wanted to move him around. They wanted like to
- 21:22Speaker 2: make him more valuable to them. They they thrive off versatility.
- 21:26Speaker 2: That's why we've seen Cody Clemens in center field multiple times.
- 21:30Speaker 2: And so that was sort of one of those boxes
- 21:33Speaker 2: to check for them, was to make sure he was
- 21:35Speaker 2: good there, because he really did, like he said, you
- 21:37Speaker 2: got to force their hand. He did a great job
- 21:40Speaker 2: of that. At the plate numbers were outstanding, and it
- 21:44Speaker 2: makes me think that there will be way better bats.
- 21:48Speaker 2: I mean, look, even even though he strikes out to
- 21:49Speaker 2: end Saturday's game, that was a good at bat with
- 21:53Speaker 2: patients and we didn't see that patience at the end
- 21:56Speaker 2: of before he got demoted, he was swinging at everything,
- 21:59Speaker 2: swinging from the heels, and it was not the case
- 22:01Speaker 2: this weekend. I think we're going to see a different
- 22:03Speaker 2: approach from him, more balanced, just more belief in himself.
- 22:08Speaker 2: And I think that's good for the Twins because they
- 22:10Speaker 2: need to get him going very quickly, and and I
- 22:12Speaker 2: think they need to get him going to get him
- 22:14Speaker 2: in that third or fourth spot in the lineup.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Eventually, the Twins got a up close and personal look
- 22:21Speaker 1: at some pretty nasty infield defense on the Royal side
- 22:25Speaker 1: with with Massy and Bobby Wit making plays all over
- 22:28Speaker 1: the place, and like, tough break on that. On that
- 22:31Speaker 1: Bobby Wit single in the ninth on Saturday, Orlando Arcia
- 22:35Speaker 1: was like two inches away from from getting that ball
- 22:38Speaker 1: in his glove. Just like that's that's like how how
- 22:42Speaker 1: different the game can be just based on uh, you know,
- 22:47Speaker 1: maybe Tristan Graves two inches taller, what it caught it.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I don't know, but what can you do? Those are.
- 22:54Speaker 2: My dog Bella would do anything for a treat, and
- 22:57Speaker 2: I want to give her a treat and that will

- 23:54Speaker 1: Dan, There's always another side to call up, and in
- 23:59Speaker 1: this case it is is that James Outman was DFA
- 24:02Speaker 1: to make room for Royce Lewis. Alman, of course, was
- 24:05Speaker 1: part of the trade deadline fire sale last year, acquired
- 24:09Speaker 1: in the brock Stewart trade. Dan into the line for
- 24:13Speaker 1: albuming with the Twins and what do you make of that?
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was tough and they looked at
- 24:21Speaker 2: it as a flyer. Last year. Autman had not been
- 24:23Speaker 2: the same. Twenty twenty three. He had an outstanding rookie year,
- 24:26Speaker 2: twenty three homers, seventy RBIs, played great defense for the Dodgers,
- 24:30Speaker 2: and they were just hoping to tap back into that
- 24:32Speaker 2: and it just really never happened. I think he struck
- 24:36Speaker 2: out like forty six percent of it bats with the
- 24:38Speaker 2: Twins since the trade. It's definitely around that percentage of
- 24:42Speaker 2: this year. Like he was in a tough role. I'm
- 24:46Speaker 2: not gonna the only time he really got consistent playing
- 24:50Speaker 2: time was right after Buxton got hurt May thirteenth. He
- 24:54Speaker 2: played five straight games in the outfield right there, and
- 24:57Speaker 2: got five straight starts in the outfield. So he's up
- 25:00Speaker 2: against it, like getting called off the bench to play defense.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Early on, I thought he was doing a great job
- 25:06Speaker 2: because his role was, hey, come in and steel base, pinch,
- 25:09Speaker 2: run steel base, play some defense. But he was just
- 25:14Speaker 2: getting inconsistent at bats the whole time. And I don't
- 25:16Speaker 2: think that's very easy way to judge a guy. But
- 25:20Speaker 2: you know, even when he got consistent playing more consistent
- 25:23Speaker 2: playing time in May, it didn't get that much better.
- 25:26Speaker 2: He was still striking out forty six percent of the time.
- 25:29Speaker 2: His ops went up from sub four hundred in March
- 25:33Speaker 2: April to about six oh eight in May, which you
- 25:36Speaker 2: know that's you're not going to crack the lineup. And
- 25:40Speaker 2: I we just didn't see him get chances to bat
- 25:43Speaker 2: like there. He was the definition of the last guy
- 25:46Speaker 2: off the bench, and I think, you know, ideally he
- 25:51Speaker 2: was going to be that guy that could come in
- 25:52Speaker 2: and give him a spark occasionally hit for some power.
- 25:55Speaker 2: He wasn't doing much of that. It is a tough spot.
- 25:58Speaker 2: It doesn't surprise me they had to bring when when
- 26:01Speaker 2: Byron got hurt on Friday, they were going to need
- 26:04Speaker 2: to bring Royce Lewis back, and that was the guy
- 26:07Speaker 2: you needed to open a spot on the twenty six
- 26:10Speaker 2: man you didn't need a forty man spot, but you
- 26:12Speaker 2: needed a spot in the twenty six man roster and
- 26:15Speaker 2: James Outman, you know, it felt like one of those
- 26:18Speaker 2: moves that was probably in the works for a while now,
- 26:20Speaker 2: but they just needed to get healthy and right and
- 26:22Speaker 2: everything having. You know, frankly, I thought Alan Roden would
- 26:27Speaker 2: get to look at over him in spring training and
- 26:30Speaker 2: Alan Roden that was sort of a surprising move, but
- 26:34Speaker 2: I get it. The twins were trying to squeeze every
- 26:36Speaker 2: ounce out of Outman and maybe find a guy that
- 26:39Speaker 2: they could trade themselves later this year. What if he
- 26:43Speaker 2: found the power bug again, I get it. It was
- 26:45Speaker 2: it was a total flyer type move. It wasn't like
- 26:49Speaker 2: he was hurting them by being on the roster, because
- 26:52Speaker 2: it's very hard for the twenty sixth man to be
- 26:54Speaker 2: hurting you on the roster. But even then they just
- 26:59Speaker 2: weren't playing at all. So it doesn't shock me. This
- 27:01Speaker 2: was the conclusion. And as far as Alan Road and
- 27:04Speaker 2: he did start a rehab assignment in the minor leagues
- 27:08Speaker 2: just the other day, and maybe he'll get a look
- 27:10Speaker 2: here eventually, because it's a guy they want to get
- 27:14Speaker 2: check out before he gets too old. It's a guy
- 27:18Speaker 2: that we're excited about in the Louis Varland trade last year,
- 27:21Speaker 2: and I think he can be a fourth outfielder that
- 27:24Speaker 2: can play all three positions. So we'll see. But yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 2: you know, again with Outman, they tried, they saw what
- 27:32Speaker 2: they saw. You know, he was better than he was
- 27:36Speaker 2: last year when he came over, but it just wasn't
- 27:38Speaker 2: enough to merit keeping him around. Well.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Next up for the Twins, as we mentioned earlier, off
- 27:44Speaker 1: to Detroit a three game road trip, that's it, and
- 27:47Speaker 1: then back to target Field for just a three game
- 27:50Speaker 1: homestand against home. Yeah, a three game homestand if you
- 27:55Speaker 1: can call it that against a very good Saint Louis
- 27:58Speaker 1: Cardinals team, but it's obviously the Twins put up a
- 28:02Speaker 1: four game suite on the Tigers earlier this season at
- 28:04Speaker 1: target Field and will now take it on the road.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Trek Scougle, of course, is hurt not pitching Taj Bradley
- 28:11Speaker 1: do up Tuesday night for the Twins. Wednesday is a
- 28:13Speaker 1: blank spot. I'm guessing that's another we'll figure out as
- 28:16Speaker 1: we go. We'll pen sort of game for a team
- 28:19Speaker 1: that's strained with starting pitching right now, and then Zebbie
- 28:21Speaker 1: Matthews scheduled for the Thursday finale. Dan, it's getting a
- 28:27Speaker 1: little hard to continue to talk about the four point
- 28:30Speaker 1: three percent hope as the struggles mount. But I'm right
- 28:34Speaker 1: another big Division series against a team that struggled this year.
- 28:38Speaker 1: That really feels like the Twins need to start putting
- 28:40Speaker 1: some wins on the board to build some momentum they do.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Just get healthy, get win series. That's all you can
- 28:48Speaker 2: do at this point. You need to convince your bosses
- 28:51Speaker 2: that you're worth building on in fifty five days or whatever.
- 28:55Speaker 2: It is not selling. But Ken Rosenshal wrote about earlier
- 28:59Speaker 2: this week Joe Ryan and if his trade value could
- 29:04Speaker 2: be affected by the potential lockout work stoppage. Really interesting
- 29:12Speaker 2: topic at the Athletic from him the other day. Check
- 29:14Speaker 2: it out. We will dive way more into that on
- 29:17Speaker 2: a future show. But you just don't want to get
- 29:19Speaker 2: in the spot where you're talking about trading. Joe Ryan
- 29:22Speaker 2: and the Twins are nearing that territory and it's it's unfortunate,
- 29:25Speaker 2: so they need to get going very quickly.
- 29:28Speaker 1: The pub is coming alive behind me, as you can see.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I'm on vacation this week. I was hoping to do
- 29:34Speaker 1: this show from the lake and give you all a
- 29:37Speaker 1: nice backdrop. But it is raining quite hard today in
- 29:40Speaker 1: central Minnesota. So maybe on Wednesday's show we'll be able
- 29:44Speaker 1: to have a little bit more schinery and less vacuuming
- 29:46Speaker 1: and dishes clanging in the background. But five forty starts
- 29:51Speaker 1: on Tuesday and Wednesday twelve ten on Thursday, Dan, are
- 29:55Speaker 1: you there this week or no?
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I will be there all right. The Athletic does
- 30:00Speaker 2: still cover the Twins.
- 30:01Speaker 1: The Athletic does still cover the Twins. Dan will be
- 30:04Speaker 1: there for the Athletic, our Minnesota Twins beat writer. I
- 30:07Speaker 1: hope to have Tyler Duffy back later this week as well.
- 30:10Speaker 1: But that's all for us for today. If you like

- 30:32Speaker 1: so we'll catch you then. Thanks very much for listening,
- 30:34Speaker 1: and bye bye everybody.
