- 0:11SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to This Reading Mamas podcast.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: We are so excited you have joined us for our second episode.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: I am Becky of This Reading Mama, and I have with me my friend, my dear friend Amy.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: And if you want to know who Amy is, you can listen to episode one.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: We talk about how we met and what a snob she thought I was.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: So be sure to listen to that.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, I'm not a snob anymore.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: No, she's not.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: She's a great friend.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's good.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: I'm glad to be back.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Last week we we introduced at the end of the episode what Bible literacy is.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And the reason I'm not calling it biblical literacy is because I know I won't be able to pronounce that every time.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna just simplify it and say Bible literacy.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Does that sound good to you?
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Sounds good.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: So we said that Bible literacy, one of the what's the word?
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: One of the aspects of Bible literacy would be understanding the overarching storyline of the Bible.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: I mentioned last time about how I didn't really understand this until I was a new mom in a Bible study.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: But the other thing I think of is like I was in public school and you had history that you were taught in public school, and then you would go to Sunday school and you would be taught the story of like Daniel and the Lion's Den or whatever.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And it was you never really understood that history and Bible history is the same history.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: I just kind of thought there was like real history and Bible history, and they didn't go together.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I learned that in homeschool actually, the program or the curriculum mystery of history.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it tied it all in like this is happening at the same time this was happening, and I went, oh, I didn't know that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's so cool.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, so what's the other?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: What's the next one?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Um, so the next one is knowing how to read the Bible, study it, and understand it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And I will be honest, um, Becky has been talking about Bible literacy, and I was like, oh, this sounds really interesting.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And so we would go through what we wanted to talk about, and I would leave going, I still don't understand what literacy is.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Like, I know it means you can read and write, but Bible literacy, so I can read the Bible and I can write about what it's saying, and so I just started researching what is literacy, and it is fascinating to me that Bible literacy is knowing what the Bible is, and then taking the basic knowledge of what the Bible is and building your knowledge on those basic foundations or those basic principles of what is the Bible and knowing who is God and who wrote the book and in what time span it was written.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And I just thought it was fascinating.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: So I'm really excited about Bible literacy now.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of layers to that one.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we have read, study, and understand the Bible for yourself, and then we have how to apply God's word to your life.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: And I think the where I see that, the way I see this is this.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So if I am teaching my kid or teaching a class or teaching Sunday school, whatever, and I teach a concept, and then I give the kids an activity to do, or like a worksheet to do.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: And then maybe you've experienced this.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: And so you don't necessarily explain the directions of the worksheet.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: You just give it to them and tell them make sure you read the directions.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: And so they do the worksheet, they're done really fast, and you're like, wait a minute, you look at the worksheet and you say, You obviously didn't read the directions because this is not how you're supposed to do the worksheet.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: You need to go back, you need to reread the directions.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: And so I think about that with the Bible.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: I think so many times in our culture, especially our American culture, we want to make God's word really about us, and we want to come to it and we want to quickly read it so we can figure out what is God saying to me and how is this, you know, what is this about for me, versus really reading the directions, looking at what are the boundaries God has set for his word.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And and yes, there is application into our life, but I think we're too quick to jump from the reading.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: A lot of times we're just listening to somebody or skimming it, zoning out as we read, and then we want the application in our life.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: So I think all of this is important.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Today we really want to focus on the overarching storyline of the Bible.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: We'll kind of get into that some.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: And then we want to give you a tool to help you read, study, and understand the Bible for yourself.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I'm excited about this tool.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: So we want to give a bird's eye view of the Old Testament timeline.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Now, this is a lot of information we're throwing at you, but we think it's important to kind of give you this overall story here of God's God's redemption story that we see even in the Old Testament.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: I think many people can be tempted to think that the God of the Old Testament is different than the God of the New Testament.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: He's the same God.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: So let's just talk about in the beginning.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: We have in Genesis in the beginning, and we know that in the beginning, with what God created, it was perfect.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And then we have the fall, Adam and Eve sin.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: And after they sin, God comes along and he promises that there's going to be redemption, that there's going to be the seed who will be raised up and he will crush Satan's head.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And then we see God choosing a people for himself.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: And this is the line in which he will redeem all mankind.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And we also see um as the Israelites are in Egypt, that there's a Pharaoh that comes into power and he grows jealous of the Israelites, and so he puts them under the yoke of slavery.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: But God chooses Moses to redeem them, to free them from that yoke of slavery and take them to the promised land.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: And we see through the journey that God implements the feasts, the festivals, the festivals, festivals and the tabernacle, um, which uh shows us God's plan of redemption through time in the present and in the future.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I love how those feasts and festivals and tabernacle point to Jesus and can see Jesus through those.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: It's pretty cool.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, then we get into the promised land, and this is where we see God as a covenant-keeping God.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: These people, even while they were wandering in the wilderness, they were not nice people.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, they complained a lot, they're kind of like us.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: They complained a lot, they couldn't see God's God's plan, how he was going to do this.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: They rebelled against Moses, they rebelled against God.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: There was a lot of yuck in that area.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: But now we get to the promised land.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: And this is the second time they have come to the promised land.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: The first time they would not go in, they would not believe God that he would conquer it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: So we see them going in the promised land through Joshua, and we see during this time, even when they're in the promised land, that the people fail to keep their promises.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: And we see that God does keep his promises.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: And when they repent through that judges cycle, we see God raise up judges and that help to rescue the people from the oppression that they're in because of their sin.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: So we see God being a merciful and gracious God that he would rescue his people and redeem his people over and over and over again.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: He is so faithful.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And when Israel is a united kingdom, they rebel against God's order, they don't want God as their king, they want an earthly king, and so God gives them King Saul, who rebels against God, and then God anoints David, and he becomes the king, and he ultimately points to the eternal king, who is King Jesus.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: And I love how we see everything pointing to Jesus, even from the Old Testament.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Definitely all right, now we have the divided kingdom.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: So just like at the beginning of the Old Testament timeline, we have the fall of man, of mankind, with sin entering the world.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: In the divided kingdom, we have the fall of the nation of Israel.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: So we have worship of idols during this time is big.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: So God chose Israel to be a light to the nations, he chose them to show the nations what it means to love God and honor God and have him be their king.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: And they failed pretty much at every step.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: I think we would too.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: I don't think it would have mattered what nation God chose.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, he chose Israel, but I think any nation would have done this because people are people.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: We tend to be prideful.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: We do.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: So I just think it's really cool here how God still sent them prophets to warn them.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: And he even says through, I think it's Ezekiel, he says, I would much rather be your father than be your judge.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: He doesn't delight in punishing and bringing those consequences, but he warned them that they were going to be in exile, they were gonna experience famine, sword, disease, if they did not repent and turn to him, and they just continued stiff-necked in their way to uh they didn't want, they didn't want a part of him, and so we have the divided kingdom.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And they didn't listen to the prophets, and so God is faithful, he fulfills his promises and he promised to them destruction.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And so he used Assyria to take the northern kingdom of Israel captive, and Judah did not heed those warnings either, and so then comes King Nebuchadnezzar, he takes them into captivity into Babylon for 70 years.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: But God is faithful, and he also said that he would have a remnant, and he uses that remnant to take them back into the land of Israel, and they rebuild the temple and um they begin to worship the Lord again.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And I think that just as God used the prophets, he says in Hebrews that he uses he now speaks through Jesus, and so we have his word, and even still we see that many people still choose to rebel against him.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: So throughout the whole timeline of the Bible, Old Testament through the Nest the New Testament, the one thing we see prominent is the triune God, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: We see that it is God's story and it's it's for his glory.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: The whole thing is right.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: So one of the things that we want to offer you as a podcast plus member, so we have a membership and we have created a 31 Days of Beginnings reading program or Bible reading plan, I would say.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: This one's gonna take you through the month of January.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: So back in the in the summer, I created some free summer Bible reading programs, and they were it was a lot of reading each day.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, most days had one or two chapters you had to read.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And my daughter, who's in high school, she loves the Lord.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: I'm not slamming her, but she she stopped using it after, I don't know, a couple weeks.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And I asked her, Why did you stop using that Bible reading?
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: It just had, I mean, I thought it was good I had created it.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: And she said, Mom, it just was so much reading in every day, and I didn't always understand it.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: And then I got behind, and then I realized if I'm gonna get ahead or catch back up, I've got to read six or seven chapters, and then it became overwhelming.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: So after picking her brain, I thought a neat way to do it instead would be a calendar type um printable that has each day gives you.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, like this day right here, day one is just 13 verses you're reading.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: It's not a lot of reading each day.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: But the thing I like about it, and the thing my daughter liked about it, was she liked that it tells you what it's gonna be about.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: So day one is God creates the world, and this is what you're supposed to read.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: So it kind of gives you the main idea of what you're reading about, and then you read the passage.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And so it's just like a calendar, a daily calendar of reading.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: So, and and the good thing is if you get behind, you're only 13 verses behind, not one or two chapters behind.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: So, hopefully, it's a little less overwhelming.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: It's good to go in knowing what to expect.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: It is, it is.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: So, we wanted to kind of go through the story of Genesis really quick with you, so that you can understand what you'll be reading in this Bible reading plan.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: So, in Genesis 1 through 2, you see the creation of the world, mankind, and um how God created marriage to be.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: And then in the fall, which happened in Genesis 3, you see Eve being deceived by Satan and ultimately Adam and Eve rebelling against God's his one rule, don't eat of this tree.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: And then you see God providing the promised seed that will come.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: In Genesis 6 through 9, we will learn about the flood and how sin corrupts the world, how God chooses Noah, who was a righteous man, to build the ark.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Then we see the Tower of Babel and the Table of Nations, which is Genesis 10 and 11.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: And if you don't, if you're able to look this up on YouTube, is it Seeds Family Worship?
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: I think that's who it is.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: They have that Tower of Babel song.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we did that in VBS a couple years ago, and that was my absolute favorite song.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So whenever I think of Tower of Babel, I think of the Seeds Family Worship song.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: But in this part of scripture, we see the pride of man.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, they were building a tower as high as they could to themselves, it says.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: And then God scatters them, he confuses their language and he scatters them over the face of the earth.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: In Genesis 12 through 22, we learn about Abram, who was then called Abraham, how God called him out of a pagan nation, created a covenant with him, and then tested his faith through his son Isaac.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: And I love how that passage of scripture says, take your son, your one and only son whom you love.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And it's just like that's that's John 3:16, if I've ever heard it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: It's just really cool.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: And then we have we had Abraham, we had Isaac, and then Isaac has two sons.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: I'm sure he had more than that, but he has two that we we really focus on here.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Jacob and Esau, they were twins.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Esau was actually born first, but Jacob took Esau's birthright, and then he tricked his father and got the blessing Esau was supposed to get.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: And then through some interesting events, he has his name changed from Jacob to Israel, and he himself has 12 sons.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Joseph being one of the 12 sons, we learn about in Genesis 37 through 50.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Well, some of it, we learn that he was loved and he was hated.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: We learn about Potiphar and how um Joseph was thrown into prison, that he was a receiver of dreams.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Even before he was sold into slavery, he was a receiver of dreams and he was also an interpreter of dreams.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And we learn more about Joseph.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: There's a lot about Joseph in Genesis.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Um there was a famine that was predicted.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: So Pharaoh has this dream.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Joseph's able to interpret this dream.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: He has a couple of dreams, I think.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And Joseph's able to interpret those dreams through the obviously God's power to do that.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Um, and he he says there's going to be seven years of plenty and then seven years of famine, and it happens just like that.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And because of the wisdom God gave Joseph through all of that, he was able to provide, he was able to store grain and provide for Egypt and not just Egypt.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: The grain and the things that he stored up, he was able to provide even for his own family who ended up having to come to Egypt.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: And it was restoration for him and his brothers.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: You know, his brothers had sold him into slavery, and then his whole family picks up and they move, they're relocated to Egypt.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of where we end the book of Genesis.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: So we just want to remind you again that if you're a podcast plus member, you're gonna get this reading program or reading, I keep saying program.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: The reading plan.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: The reading plan.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: And um one of the things I also want to say about the podcast, hmm, you can say it better than me, try it.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: The podcast plus membership.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, that thing.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Um, one of the things, one of the benefits of that is you're gonna get transcripts from our, and they're edited, they're not all of our run-on sentences and crazy things we say, but you'll get the transcripts, you'll get printables like this, and you'll get kind of like a guided note.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: So, like that whole overline, overarching story.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Thank you for finishing my sentence.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Um, you'll have a paid paper where you can follow along and take notes to kind of help.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I'm a I need to write notes to remember things.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: I'm a kinesthetic learner.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Kinesthetic, yeah, me too.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: I have to write it and it is recorded in my mind.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: That's how I am.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Normally, if I'm gonna look up a Bible verse, I know what side of the page it was on in my Bible or that it went from this column to this column, and I cannot find it in somebody else's Bible.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: And forget finding it on the phone.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: There's no way I'm gonna find it on the phone.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: So, one of the things we want you to do, as we want to do, is we want to be determined to be like Ezra, to read, do, and tell the word of the Lord.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Amen.
