- 0:07Speaker 1: We made it to the end of the week. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: your host, Alana Rizzo in for Scott Braun. That is
- 0:11Speaker 1: Eric Kratz. Trevor May. I am Trevor May is joining
- 0:15Speaker 1: us too. We appreciate you being here. I think he's
- 0:17Speaker 1: at a pumpkin patch. Eric said that he's drinking spice latte,
- 0:21Speaker 1: pumpkin spice latte. Trevor says he is not drinking that,
- 0:24Speaker 1: so I will take him at his word. Great to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be with you, guys. Don't forget everybody watching and listening
- 0:30Speaker 1: hashtag ft live, get in the chat, get in the conversation.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You can shop us at foul Territory dot com. What's up, Eric,
- 0:37Speaker 1: you got something to say?
- 0:38Speaker 3: What is it?
- 0:39Speaker 4: Alana?
- 0:39Speaker 2: You've been on here for five straight days and your
- 0:42Speaker 2: energy is still peak, like you have mega energy, and
- 0:46Speaker 2: I appreciate that. I don't want people to think this
- 0:48Speaker 2: is Alana's first day for energy is peak. But you
- 0:52Speaker 2: know what, just like every starter, you're gonna have an
- 0:54Speaker 2: off day tomorrow. I need you to bring it today, Okay,
- 0:57Speaker 2: I need you to keep it, keep it hype even
- 0:59Speaker 2: though you is coming on JT. I love you, JT.
- 1:03Speaker 2: You're the best.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I do love JT. Justin Turner is on the show,
- 1:08Speaker 1: but you know what I tell you, I appreciate the thought,
- 1:10Speaker 1: by the way, Ek, but we have a good show
- 1:12Speaker 1: because not only is Justin Turner coming on the show,
- 1:14Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal is joining us as well. Happy birthday, Ken Rosenthal.
- 1:18Speaker 1: A j Ellis is joining the show. So another fellow
- 1:22Speaker 1: catcher Eric of course talking about all things Clayton Kershaw,
- 1:25Speaker 1: who announced his retirement yesterday. He's going to retire after
- 1:29Speaker 1: the season. We'll get teammates thoughts on that because you
- 1:31Speaker 1: and I discussed it yesterday. And Kay Povich of the
- 1:34Speaker 1: Baltimore Orioles also joining us on the show. So a
- 1:37Speaker 1: lot to get to on this two hour program. Let's
- 1:40Speaker 1: get to it. Let's charge the mound.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Let's charge about.
- 1:46Speaker 1: All right. So Cleveland is making a playoff push, Trevor.
- 1:49Speaker 1: We have been discussing this all week long, as I'm
- 1:51Speaker 1: sure you have two on all of your relative podcasts
- 1:55Speaker 1: as well. But Cleveland's making a push for it. The
- 1:58Speaker 1: American League is still a nightmare the National League. The
- 2:01Speaker 1: Mets are still holding on by you know, chinny chin
- 2:04Speaker 1: chin there. What do you make of this Guardian's push?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Are they getting in your opinion.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Uh, it's it's gonna be tough, and they still got
- 2:13Speaker 5: to go take take care of Detroit again, which they
- 2:16Speaker 5: just did. But it's always fun to see a super
- 2:19Speaker 5: hot team right at the end of the year. I
- 2:21Speaker 5: feel like a team that sneaks in usually puts on
- 2:25Speaker 5: a pretty good show in October.
- 2:26Speaker 3: And we want all the hottest.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Teams playing each other at the end anyway, So if
- 2:31Speaker 5: it did happen, wouldn't hate it. Still think things are
- 2:34Speaker 5: going against them a little bit with having to chase
- 2:36Speaker 5: two good teams that are gonna be out there, having
- 2:39Speaker 5: to battle it out as well in Boston and the Mariners,
- 2:43Speaker 5: and also when it comes to the Mariners, n astros like,
- 2:46Speaker 5: it's not like if you jump one, the other one's
- 2:48Speaker 5: not gonna be in your way. So a lot needs
- 2:50Speaker 5: to happen, But you know, it's it's about finishing strong.
- 2:54Speaker 5: So the worst case scenario for the Guardians and Guardians fans,
- 2:59Speaker 5: I mean, finishing on, getting getting on, getting on, finishing
- 3:02Speaker 5: the year on the right foot is one thing in
- 3:05Speaker 5: hang your hat on but if you can sneak in gosh, gosh,
- 3:08Speaker 5: I mean, that's just a fun it's a fun story.
- 3:10Speaker 5: You want to you want to see things like that happen.
- 3:12Speaker 5: But I think they're still still needs so a few
- 3:16Speaker 5: more things to happen for I'm truly believing that it will.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't control their own destiny.
- 3:21Speaker 4: E case.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Should we be making more of a deal about the
- 3:24Speaker 1: Guardians making a last minute push or the Tigers really scuffling?
- 3:28Speaker 1: We know the Tigers are getting in whatever, But should
- 3:31Speaker 1: a bigger deal be made about the Tigers scuffling right now?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Or do we care?
- 3:36Speaker 2: Man? I mean, I guess at what point do we
- 3:39Speaker 2: care about the Tigers scuffling? We kind of talked about
- 3:42Speaker 2: it the other day about how their team is not
- 3:45Speaker 2: built on nine dudes in the lineup that play one
- 3:48Speaker 2: hundred and fifty five games. Their team is built on
- 3:51Speaker 2: thirteen guys in the lineup playing one hundred and fifty
- 3:54Speaker 2: five games. Kerry Carpenter, who, in my opinion, should be
- 3:58Speaker 2: getting six hundred at bats a year. He doesn't get
- 4:00Speaker 2: that many because he you know, they try to platoon
- 4:03Speaker 2: and advantage him as much as they can. But when
- 4:07Speaker 2: that's happening. You go through stretches where it's not going well.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So am I not concerned at all? No, I'm a
- 4:16Speaker 2: little concerned about the Tigers the way they're not winning games,
- 4:20Speaker 2: because they figure out how to win games. But I
- 4:22Speaker 2: am super enthused about the fact that Trek Scougle went
- 4:27Speaker 2: out last night and absolutely shoved because when your ace
- 4:31Speaker 2: comes off the mound like this, you are supreme worried
- 4:37Speaker 2: because you've kind of been coasting to this point in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the season. So no, I'm not concerned yet for the Tigers.
- 4:44Speaker 2: They still have to close out these Guardians who are winning.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We keep finding a team every like three days. It's like,
- 4:51Speaker 2: oh wait, this team wins seven in a row. Oh,
- 4:54Speaker 2: nine in a row. Mets lose eight in a row.
- 4:57Speaker 2: It's the ebbs and flows of the season. It's just
- 5:00Speaker 2: more magnified because we ain't got many games left. Trevor.
- 5:04Speaker 1: What if the Guardians didn't trade away Shane Bieber, What
- 5:08Speaker 1: if the Guardians didn't have a couple of guys under
- 5:11Speaker 1: investigation because of gambling issues. This is just the thing.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It's like, if you miss I'd rather be blown out
- 5:17Speaker 1: and be like the Athletics or the Rockies. At this
- 5:19Speaker 1: point that have no shot of getting into the postseason
- 5:21Speaker 1: than miss the postseason by one game. How do you
- 5:25Speaker 1: feel about it?
- 5:26Speaker 3: It's weird. That's a two sided coin, right, Like you
- 5:29Speaker 3: can be.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Excited that the guys stepped up into those spots that
- 5:33Speaker 5: were vacated and got even better or did the job
- 5:37Speaker 5: well and maybe established themselves for the future moving forward,
- 5:41Speaker 5: or you can you know, think high sight is twenty twenty.
- 5:44Speaker 5: I think that the Guardians historically have always thought of
- 5:46Speaker 5: it the first way. But it's definitely tough to think
- 5:53Speaker 5: about what happened, specially with the Gambley stuff. You know,
- 5:55Speaker 5: their pitching has been good, the starting pitching has been good,
- 5:59Speaker 5: and they scored enough runs to win any one game
- 6:01Speaker 5: so far. Like, it's hard to say if it wouldn't
- 6:05Speaker 5: be the same situation because wins are wins whether or
- 6:07Speaker 5: not who's in there playing or not.
- 6:10Speaker 3: So it's just what they always do.
- 6:13Speaker 5: They just always find value from these guys that maybe
- 6:15Speaker 5: we don't know or are young, and they're just proving that. Again,
- 6:19Speaker 5: it's definitely a cultural thing there that you can go
- 6:22Speaker 5: and you can make noise at the end of the year,
- 6:24Speaker 5: and that's why they're always in this position of this time.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Eric Tanner, Biby and Gavin Williams anchoring the Cleveland rotation
- 6:32Speaker 1: obviously should have, could have, would have. But if they
- 6:34Speaker 1: were to get in, let's say, and I understand completely
- 6:36Speaker 1: that that is a big if. We're talking a lot
- 6:39Speaker 1: this week about how all thirty teams have holes, right,
- 6:42Speaker 1: regardless of who gets into the postseason, you can poke
- 6:44Speaker 1: holes at all. What are the Guardians?
- 6:47Speaker 2: Well, I know Tanner, Biby and Gavin Williams are not
- 6:49Speaker 2: hitting for them, so there's a big hole. Like their
- 6:53Speaker 2: lineup just isn't It's like an every other year lineup.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It's a Bruce Bochie lineup, like they show up every
- 6:59Speaker 2: other year and they do awesome. Where did all that
- 7:02Speaker 2: power go? Where did the guys you know, the extra power?
- 7:05Speaker 2: Obviously you have an envy perennial top five MVP finisher
- 7:09Speaker 2: in Jose Ramirez in that lineup, Like what he can
- 7:13Speaker 2: do from both sides of the plate just changes the lineup.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Why he doesn't walk more is clueless to me, because
- 7:20Speaker 2: he chases and his arms are like a foot long.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Teams just are afraid to walk him, and he's afraid
- 7:28Speaker 2: to walk himself. So outside of Jose Ramirez and great
- 7:32Speaker 2: at bats from Steven Kwan, you're really not getting a
- 7:36Speaker 2: lot of fear in other teams pitchers, scouting reports, it's like, hey,
- 7:41Speaker 2: throw strikes. These guys will put the ball in play.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You know, that's about it. You take Josh Naylor out
- 7:48Speaker 2: of the lineup, and look what you have this year.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I just think it's I think it's too little in
- 7:52Speaker 2: that lineup. And Cleveland fans need to look back. And
- 7:56Speaker 2: I know they've been clamoring for their ownership to spend
- 7:58Speaker 2: and they'll never spend. But the one time that they
- 8:02Speaker 2: went to the World Series and they lost to the Cubs,
- 8:06Speaker 2: they had gone out and got a major piece in
- 8:08Speaker 2: Edwin and Carnassium. They had gone out and they had
- 8:12Speaker 2: a great core, which this organization always builds and brings
- 8:16Speaker 2: to the big leagues and gives them confidence. They always
- 8:19Speaker 2: have good starting pitching because their formula is ridiculous about
- 8:23Speaker 2: what they think and started pitching. And now recently they've
- 8:25Speaker 2: had bullpens like they've built bullpens and that's epic. But
- 8:29Speaker 2: you got to spend for that extra bat that's going
- 8:33Speaker 2: to be right behind Jose Ramirez and giving him protection
- 8:36Speaker 2: and fear for the other team. My question is for
- 8:39Speaker 2: you played against the Guardians, you were in, you came
- 8:42Speaker 2: up through that organization. What did you guys think in
- 8:46Speaker 2: Minnesota when you were like, oh, yeah, you know, we're
- 8:48Speaker 2: going to play the Guardians, where you're like, eh, you know,
- 8:52Speaker 2: catch them when they're hot, they might be tough. If not,
- 8:56Speaker 2: you know, never never too fearful of them is how
- 8:58Speaker 2: I felt. But I was never in that division consistently
- 9:01Speaker 2: except for when else in KC.
- 9:02Speaker 5: For Lou yeah, and I think you nail a little bit.
- 9:06Speaker 5: It was more pesky or like this is a team
- 9:09Speaker 5: of grinders, like they're going to grind you out, it's
- 9:11Speaker 5: going to be an exhausting game. But as a pitcher,
- 9:14Speaker 5: you know, I saw it in a lens like there's
- 9:16Speaker 5: two or three guys that you really got to worry about,
- 9:18Speaker 5: and then everyone else you're trying to work around and
- 9:21Speaker 5: then just hope you don't line up against Cy Young
- 9:23Speaker 5: Bieber or Cy Young Corey Klueber. That was basically like,
- 9:26Speaker 5: let's just hope those guys we don't get them every
- 9:29Speaker 5: single series, which we tended to do. So it was
- 9:31Speaker 5: always like we're confident in our ability to keep them
- 9:34Speaker 5: three runs two runs, but are we going to score zero?
- 9:37Speaker 5: That was usually the issue. So as a pitcher, it
- 9:39Speaker 5: was a it was a matchup that we weren't fear
- 9:41Speaker 5: wasn't a big thing, but it was like, there's not
- 9:43Speaker 5: a lot of room for air here. They're gonna have
- 9:46Speaker 5: to screen heads against you because and the park also
- 9:49Speaker 5: was tough to hit homers in as well, So like
- 9:51Speaker 5: it was just one of those things.
- 9:52Speaker 3: It's just a good place to pitch.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I am back, gentlemen, I am back. Let me ask
- 9:58Speaker 1: you this, more surprised, Trevor if the Guardians got in
- 10:03Speaker 1: superseding the Red Sox, or would you be more surprised
- 10:07Speaker 1: if the Diamondbacks got in over the New York Mets.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I would say I would say more surprised if the
- 10:21Speaker 5: Guardians got in, simply because the teams that they're chasing,
- 10:24Speaker 5: like the Mariners of one to ten or eleven of
- 10:26Speaker 5: their last twelve, like the teams are chasing are hot.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Also, Mets not hot.
- 10:31Speaker 5: So and then the Diamondbacks they have maintained one of
- 10:35Speaker 5: the most potent offenses in the major leagues, even with
- 10:39Speaker 5: trading a bunch of guys at the deadline, and they're
- 10:42Speaker 5: one of those teams you can't sleep on them because
- 10:44Speaker 5: they're gonna score a ton of runs. So for them
- 10:46Speaker 5: to get hot right now, it doesn't surprise me as much.
- 10:48Speaker 5: And you know, the Mets, it's hard to deny at
- 10:51Speaker 5: this point. And I am a guy who's always like
- 10:53Speaker 5: ursues you know, aren't real, but like it's it's been.
- 10:55Speaker 3: That's a slide of all slides.
- 10:57Speaker 5: So you know, at this point you can't be surp
- 11:00Speaker 5: that did happen, though the last series did look much
- 11:02Speaker 5: better against a good Padres team, so we'll see. But
- 11:06Speaker 5: the Diebacks making a push not even remotely surprising to me.
- 11:09Speaker 1: All right, well, I tell you what. The Mets have
- 11:11Speaker 1: nobody to blame, you guys, but themselves. But aj Pieredinski,
- 11:16Speaker 1: who's not here today, still maintains they will absolutely get
- 11:19Speaker 1: that third wild card spot. Magic numbers always make me
- 11:22Speaker 1: cringe because it makes me do math, But Bob Knightangale
- 11:25Speaker 1: does the work for me.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Here.
- 11:26Speaker 1: The Milwaukee Brewers magic number to win the NL Central
- 11:29Speaker 1: is four. The Brewers magic number to clinch home field
- 11:31Speaker 1: advantage throughout the National League postseason is six. So we
- 11:36Speaker 1: are getting close. Trevor we haven't talked, at least you
- 11:38Speaker 1: and I have not talked about it. What has impressed
- 11:40Speaker 1: you the most about what Milwaukee's been able to accomplish
- 11:43Speaker 1: this year?
- 11:45Speaker 5: They just always seem to be able to do this
- 11:47Speaker 5: and be right there at the end or win the division.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I think that.
- 11:51Speaker 5: I mean a lot's been said about how you fundamentally
- 11:55Speaker 5: sound they are, how willing they are to bunt and run,
- 11:58Speaker 5: take the extra base, and all of that is true.
- 12:01Speaker 5: That's a testament to Pat Murphy and his crew. But
- 12:03Speaker 5: I also think that it's a really cohesive group that
- 12:07Speaker 5: a good clubhouse to be in by all accounts, and
- 12:10Speaker 5: they've gotten them. They're basically optimizing all of their players.
- 12:13Speaker 5: They're able to put anyone in any situation. It's built
- 12:16Speaker 5: very similarly to like the Guardians teams of the past as.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Well, and maybe even a little bit better.
- 12:21Speaker 5: But like they put these these teams together and then
- 12:23Speaker 5: they develop pitching at a level that I think might
- 12:28Speaker 5: be the best out there. We got Freddy Peralta now
- 12:30Speaker 5: has turned into bona fide as. Even though Woodrift's stuff
- 12:34Speaker 5: isn't the hundred that he used to throw, He's completely
- 12:37Speaker 5: revamped himself as a pitcher and is just as effective.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Like they have the guys with experience, They got the
- 12:43Speaker 5: guys that they need to take those first three games
- 12:45Speaker 5: in the series, and then their lineup is pesky and
- 12:48Speaker 5: hard to strike out. Hard to strike out is so
- 12:51Speaker 5: valuable these days because of the nature of dominant pitching.
- 12:55Speaker 5: I always bring these guys up as an example, but
- 12:59Speaker 5: it is mymore. You're in the major leagues facing the
- 13:01Speaker 5: twenty fifteen Kansas City Royals, who led the league or
- 13:05Speaker 5: was the least amount of strikers in the league by
- 13:07Speaker 5: like ten percent less than anybody else. It was one
- 13:10Speaker 5: of the most annoying teams to face, and they did
- 13:12Speaker 5: not hit that many home runs. But you just knew
- 13:14Speaker 5: that there was going to be a pitcher out there
- 13:17Speaker 5: exhausted after throwing one hundred pitches in five innings. Even
- 13:20Speaker 5: if he throws a zero, it's it is it's a
- 13:24Speaker 5: different type of tire. And they are that team, and
- 13:27Speaker 5: they have the electric pitching to absolutely demoralize another team.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Those two things together is just a recipe for having
- 13:35Speaker 5: the record that they.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Have Milwaukee Brewers four games, that's the magic number, and guys,
- 13:41Speaker 1: the Blue Jays can actually clinch a postseason birth tonight.
- 13:44Speaker 1: We know Milwaukee's already in, but the Blue Jays can
- 13:46Speaker 1: clinch tonight with a win at Kansas City and losses
- 13:50Speaker 1: by any two of the following three teams. The Tigers
- 13:52Speaker 1: versus the Braves, the Red Sox they're at Tampa Bay,
- 13:55Speaker 1: and the Guardians, those pesky Guardians, they are at Minnesota.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I absolutely love this for Hunter Green because obviously he's
- 14:11Speaker 1: a kid that can shove. He has a huge future
- 14:14Speaker 1: in this game. But he just you know, guys don't
- 14:16Speaker 1: get to go the distance very much anymore.
- 14:18Speaker 2: E K.
- 14:18Speaker 3: He did it.
- 14:19Speaker 1: He took a no hit bit into the seventh of
- 14:20Speaker 1: yesterday's game. He ends up going nine innings, allowing just
- 14:23Speaker 1: one hit, nine punch outs, and has a two seven
- 14:27Speaker 1: to four e er eight. The Red's probably not getting
- 14:29Speaker 1: into the postseason, but Hunter Green, there's a lot to
- 14:31Speaker 1: like about him.
- 14:33Speaker 2: What Age' is not on, we can say the Reds
- 14:35Speaker 2: are again. Then Craig miss even said the Marlins have
- 14:39Speaker 2: a chance.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know about that.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I like Creig that Hunter Green has been this guy.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I was looking it up while you were talking. Everybody
- 14:51Speaker 2: needs a guess how old Hunter Green is twenty three,
- 14:56Speaker 2: twenty eight four, he's twenty six.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Oh, you guys would have gone the other way.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Hunter Green is Hunter Green. You've heard about him. I'm
- 15:05Speaker 2: not saying he's the Bryce Harper of pitchers, but you
- 15:08Speaker 2: heard about him when he was drafted throwing a hundred.
- 15:11Speaker 2: He is now in the last two years become the
- 15:16Speaker 2: pitcher that I think everybody thinks when you see a
- 15:20Speaker 2: guy that comes out of the draft and he throws
- 15:22Speaker 2: a hundred. He's a physical specimen. You talk to him,
- 15:25Speaker 2: he's very smart, he's articulate, he's you know, he's just
- 15:30Speaker 2: great out there in the community all that stuff, and
- 15:33Speaker 2: you're like, this guy is almost like a he can't miss.
- 15:37Speaker 2: In the last two seasons he's been can't miss. He
- 15:39Speaker 2: had a two seven to five last year, first All
- 15:42Speaker 2: Star Game and he had two seven to four.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Right now.
- 15:45Speaker 2: This is a he's becoming an ace. He's not an
- 15:48Speaker 2: ace yet, but he's becoming an ace. And it's because
- 15:51Speaker 2: he's able to locate his fastball. And the fastball is
- 15:54Speaker 2: still one hundred and one. Last night it was one
- 15:56Speaker 2: hundred and one in the ninth inning. Like this is
- 15:59Speaker 2: something that you see. To me, I see a lot
- 16:01Speaker 2: of dj Johnson Derek Johnson, the pitching coach for the Reds,
- 16:06Speaker 2: really putting his fingerprint on him, not just saying, oh,
- 16:09Speaker 2: great job, you throw a ball really hard, Go throw
- 16:12Speaker 2: it towards the plate and see what happens. He's been
- 16:15Speaker 2: able to refine his mechanics and be able to locate
- 16:19Speaker 2: these pitches. Now, to me, he's a guy that's built
- 16:23Speaker 2: to go nine innings. It's only his second career shut out,
- 16:28Speaker 2: but it's also his second career complete game. So to me,
- 16:31Speaker 2: I think he's a guy that moving forward, can do this,
- 16:35Speaker 2: and if the Reds are going to ever do anything
- 16:37Speaker 2: this year or next year, I think he has to
- 16:40Speaker 2: be the guy.
- 16:42Speaker 5: When guys take the wheel and see that it's on
- 16:46Speaker 5: them to become that game one ace. I just love
- 16:49Speaker 5: it that we've seen the same thing happen for the
- 16:51Speaker 5: last couple of years with Terry Scooble just say I'm
- 16:54Speaker 5: the guy. I'm the guy I figured something out, and
- 16:57Speaker 5: give me the ball game one and let's do this thing.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Er Green is becoming that for the Reds, which is
- 17:02Speaker 5: making me even more impatient to see them in a
- 17:04Speaker 5: playoff series. And don't forget he started the year maybe
- 17:08Speaker 5: the hottest starting pitcher in the whole, you know, major
- 17:12Speaker 5: leagues including Zach Wheeler and Paul Skins. He would have
- 17:15Speaker 5: been in that conversation had he not had to miss
- 17:18Speaker 5: some time there in the middle. So you know, I've
- 17:20Speaker 5: been big on him since he came up. The velocity's
- 17:23Speaker 5: always been there, and I think you hit it right
- 17:25Speaker 5: on the nail head. It's the command, it's the edges.
- 17:29Speaker 5: One question mark about him was like, how is the
- 17:31Speaker 5: guy with this stuff get hit as hard as he does.
- 17:34Speaker 5: That's some that seemingly isn't an issue when he's putting
- 17:37Speaker 5: it where he wants to put it. So you you
- 17:39Speaker 5: had command to one hundred miles an hour. There's just
- 17:42Speaker 5: nothing anyone can do. And you just saw him just
- 17:44Speaker 5: absolutely let it all out, put it all on the
- 17:47Speaker 5: line there in the ninth inning, really just wanting to
- 17:51Speaker 5: finish that game like he wanted it. You could see
- 17:53Speaker 5: by his reaction when he did pull it off. It
- 17:55Speaker 5: was something he decided he was going to do. And
- 17:57Speaker 5: once you can pull that off, it's it's a confidence sure,
- 18:00Speaker 5: you know, indefinitely into the future. And so I think
- 18:03Speaker 5: we just saw before this probably, but we've seen a
- 18:06Speaker 5: number one. The Reds have their number one going in
- 18:08Speaker 5: the future. Now it's just building around him jevity.
- 18:13Speaker 1: And the only reason I ask you, guys that is
- 18:15Speaker 1: because he throws two hundred miles an hour. And I
- 18:17Speaker 1: realize that everybody does that now, But oftentimes when you
- 18:21Speaker 1: have that kind of velo and everyone's throwing as hard
- 18:23Speaker 1: as they can, as many times as they can, it
- 18:25Speaker 1: ends up being uh time of John surgery or some
- 18:28Speaker 1: sort of surgery. So he's your ace, you see that.
- 18:32Speaker 1: And I know some folks will say, teams don't care.
- 18:34Speaker 1: We'll let you ride it out and blow your arm out.
- 18:36Speaker 1: It's not our problem. But do you look at him
- 18:40Speaker 1: as a as a long term sign like I guess
- 18:42Speaker 1: if you were the president of Baseball ops er moreover,
- 18:45Speaker 1: if you're the owner of the Reds, how long do
- 18:47Speaker 1: you sign him to when he comes up for free
- 18:50Speaker 1: agency or availability to sign him to a long term deal.
- 18:54Speaker 2: They don't need to. They don't need to. They got
- 18:56Speaker 2: him early. They already got him early. I think he's
- 18:58Speaker 2: on a five six years, fifty three million, and they
- 19:03Speaker 2: got an option all the way to twenty nine, all
- 19:05Speaker 2: the way to twenty twenty nine.
- 19:06Speaker 1: So him for steal, then.
- 19:08Speaker 2: He's gonna be a red for a while. But I
- 19:11Speaker 2: think it's smart on both ends, just because of all
- 19:14Speaker 2: the things you just said. Teams don't care, Yes they care.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That sounds insensitive, but they don't care if you blow out.
- 19:21Speaker 2: They want the best out of you out there. And
- 19:23Speaker 2: that's why I think I see with him when guys
- 19:26Speaker 2: take Trevor May said earlier about Freddy p when guys
- 19:31Speaker 2: take the next step after Freddy PE's outing the other day,
- 19:34Speaker 2: I had said it on the show here about how
- 19:38Speaker 2: I see him dialing it up in big situations. I
- 19:42Speaker 2: saw Hunter Green do that last night. He dialed it up.
- 19:45Speaker 2: That was a one run game. He wasn't playing, he
- 19:48Speaker 2: wasn't going complete game, shutout six nothing. He's, in my
- 19:51Speaker 2: opinion's probably gonna be stored tomorrow or today because it's
- 19:55Speaker 2: right after his game. But he's he's got like he
- 19:58Speaker 2: dials it up when he needs to, not just all right,
- 20:01Speaker 2: first pitch, see if you.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Can hit it, yeah, strike one. Neat.
- 20:06Speaker 2: It just seems like he's starting to cruise through games
- 20:09Speaker 2: and then when he gets in a little bit of trouble,
- 20:11Speaker 2: uh huh. You haven't seen this out of me and
- 20:14Speaker 2: I still have this in the tank and a ninth inning,
- 20:16Speaker 2: so that is when guys take the next level.
- 20:19Speaker 1: It was so cool to see him go the distance.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Anytime you can see a guy throw a complete game
- 20:24Speaker 1: in today's day and age, it's pretty neat. Didn't throw
- 20:26Speaker 1: a complete game, but man, he had the swing and miss.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I'm talking about Max Free to the New York Yankees
- 20:31Speaker 1: obviously went seven innings, Trevor thirteen punchies, allowing only three hits,
- 20:36Speaker 1: has a two nine to two ere We knew how
- 20:38Speaker 1: good this guy was when he was with Atlanta, but
- 20:40Speaker 1: he is everything that the Yankees could have hoped for.
- 20:42Speaker 1: What'd you take out of his outing?
- 20:45Speaker 5: He's just classic Max Reed. The guy throws every pitch
- 20:50Speaker 5: that exists, and he's a guy who they need to
- 20:53Speaker 5: be hot, and be hot right now with him and
- 20:56Speaker 5: Rodon and he'l like they need their three guys to
- 21:00Speaker 5: go one, two, three in the playoffs, assuming that it's
- 21:04Speaker 5: a wild card. Berth you gotta be ready to go
- 21:05Speaker 5: right away, So great timing for that, but absolutely filthy
- 21:09Speaker 5: throwing high nineties. Again, he is weird. I've heard a
- 21:12Speaker 5: lot of hitters talk about this and in terms of
- 21:14Speaker 5: like how the ball.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Comes out of his hands.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Sometimes it's like it's been in like a like a
- 21:19Speaker 5: two seamer and it's a four seam, and sometimes it's
- 21:21Speaker 5: like a cutter, and he doesn't even really throw one
- 21:23Speaker 5: of those really, so it's like he's just dip dive
- 21:26Speaker 5: and dodging him up there and always has been. And
- 21:27Speaker 5: then you add the type of stuff the velo behind that.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Him striking out thirteen guys in surprised me one bit.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I believe that's his eighteenth win. So you can't always
- 21:36Speaker 5: say this. I think it's important. I think we focus
- 21:38Speaker 5: on the negative a little bit too much sometimes. But
- 21:40Speaker 5: you got your money's worth from signing Max Freed this offseason.
- 21:43Speaker 5: I'd say that one has worked out so far.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I like the dodgeball reference, dip dive, duck dodge. The
- 21:50Speaker 1: Yankees closed within three games of the Blue Jays of
- 21:52Speaker 1: the course, who lost earlier in the day to the
- 21:54Speaker 1: raise we're talking about yesterday. New York's edge over Houston
- 21:57Speaker 1: Seattle remained at two games from the top ale wild
- 22:00Speaker 1: card spot. Two weeks ago, I said the Yankees weren't
- 22:02Speaker 1: making the postseason, and now there are three games ahead
- 22:06Speaker 1: in the wild Card shows you what I know. But
- 22:08Speaker 1: let's talk about Max Reed a little bit more. We
- 22:10Speaker 1: talked so much, you guys, deservedly so, of what Aaron
- 22:13Speaker 1: Judge does. Eric Kratz, who is your MVP in the
- 22:16Speaker 1: American League, You've been very strict about that. We talked
- 22:19Speaker 1: so much about what he means to the team. But
- 22:21Speaker 1: what is Max Fried meant, especially in the absence of
- 22:25Speaker 1: Garrett Cole. Louise Heil took a bit to get back.
- 22:27Speaker 1: You know, Carlos Rodonna has been good this year for
- 22:29Speaker 1: the Yankees, but Max Freed, what he's done, I think
- 22:33Speaker 1: means more considering they don't have Garrett Cole.
- 22:37Speaker 4: For sure.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I mean, when you go out to sign, when you
- 22:40Speaker 2: got to sign a guy like Max Freed, you're like,
- 22:42Speaker 2: WHOA Can you imagine Game one Garrett Cole, Max Free,
- 22:47Speaker 2: Game two, Carlos Rodin, Game three, Louis Heel Game four
- 22:51Speaker 2: like that. They had dreams of this. Cole goes down.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Rodnna has stepped up immensely for this team. I think
- 23:00Speaker 2: he does better when he's not in a when he's
- 23:03Speaker 2: in a spotlight, like when it's like his turn to go,
- 23:06Speaker 2: He's he's taking the next step for me. Heel's been down.
- 23:10Speaker 2: They've had guys like Slitler and Will Warren step up
- 23:14Speaker 2: for him. So it's not what they thought the Yankees
- 23:17Speaker 2: rotation was gonna look like. So that's how important the
- 23:20Speaker 2: Max Freed signing was. So many teams signed pitchers and
- 23:24Speaker 2: the pitchers didn't work out this year, but they didn't
- 23:27Speaker 2: go for the Max Freed, the Corbin Burns, the trade
- 23:31Speaker 2: for Garrett Crochet. They went for like, we'll just get
- 23:34Speaker 2: a one year deal. I will give this guy a
- 23:36Speaker 2: two year deal. But we see a lot of upside.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yankee said, screw it. Who's the best pitcher available. He
- 23:44Speaker 2: wants a bigger contract than David Price Scott, we'll give
- 23:47Speaker 2: it to him. They broke that record for left handers.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Bang. Now they're getting paying the dividends.
- 23:53Speaker 2: And I'm gonna go back to two thousand and nine,
- 23:55Speaker 2: the last time the Yankees won the World Series. What
- 23:58Speaker 2: Max Freed is doing. Don't compare the numbers, Just compare
- 24:01Speaker 2: how important it is and the fact that it's the
- 24:04Speaker 2: first year that they signed this guy. The Yankees won
- 24:08Speaker 2: the World Series the first year they signed C. C. Sabathia.
- 24:11Speaker 2: He was the best available in the market. The Yankees
- 24:15Speaker 2: are in line to make the playoffs on not according
- 24:18Speaker 2: to Alana Rizzo two weeks ago. But they signed Max
- 24:23Speaker 2: Free the best available pitcher, and he is having that
- 24:27Speaker 2: type of year that CC had where the numbers aren't
- 24:30Speaker 2: like WHOA like a one era. He's out there every
- 24:33Speaker 2: single day. Now he's leading the league and wins, which matters.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Yankees, by the way, only have a two game lead
- 24:40Speaker 1: over Houston in Seattle right now. I apologize that was
- 24:43Speaker 1: my mistake earlier I said three, but it's only a
- 24:45Speaker 1: two game lead. Trevor May, did the New York Yankees
- 24:49Speaker 1: have enough to get to the World Series and moreover
- 24:52Speaker 1: win it?
- 24:54Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 24:55Speaker 5: I mean they've always they've been a deep team. They have,
- 24:59Speaker 5: you know, they're there's a couple question marks in the bullpen,
- 25:01Speaker 5: but some guys have stepped up.
- 25:03Speaker 3: At least the bridge side of.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Things has been pretty strong with Fernando Cruz and I
- 25:08Speaker 5: know Lighter Junior struggled a little bit there in the middle,
- 25:10Speaker 5: but he has been better as of late. So they
- 25:13Speaker 5: have enough depth, They have enough guys that can step up,
- 25:16Speaker 5: and it's one of those lineups like you know, a
- 25:18Speaker 5: Cody Belager, you know, he's been I think under the
- 25:21Speaker 5: radar very good this year. They have guys who can
- 25:24Speaker 5: take over games and they're always gonna have the threat
- 25:26Speaker 5: of the home run, and that is just something that
- 25:28Speaker 5: if it's timed right, can be just devastating in a
- 25:32Speaker 5: playoff situation. We saw it happened last year there there
- 25:36Speaker 5: for the most part, most of the players are back
- 25:39Speaker 5: and guys who experienced it and and have that experience
- 25:41Speaker 5: under the belt. So yeah, it's one of those things
- 25:43Speaker 5: like if the Yankees make the playoffs, they're just there
- 25:47Speaker 5: is a path for because they probably have a handful
- 25:51Speaker 5: of the best players in the league. They always do
- 25:53Speaker 5: and that that remains true. So it's all about getting
- 25:58Speaker 5: hot at the right time. Though I think things of
- 26:00Speaker 5: you know, even out since that nine and that's why
- 26:02Speaker 5: it's been tough for them. But they still make the
- 26:05Speaker 5: playoffs every year. So yes, I'll never count the Yankees
- 26:07Speaker 5: out call that just a little bit of PTSD for
- 26:13Speaker 5: my entire life. But they're always in it and they're
- 26:16Speaker 5: always they always have a chance.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Spoken like a guy who has pitched the majority of
- 26:20Speaker 1: his career in the American League, any concern about the
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yankee bullpen Trevor May Eric Kratz. If you take a
- 26:27Speaker 1: look at the numbers recently, they're twenty ninth as far
- 26:30Speaker 1: as their ere ranking since August first, being the worst
- 26:35Speaker 1: in the majors, teetering between basically north of five and
- 26:39Speaker 1: a half.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I think maybe they picked up some dudes that got
- 26:43Speaker 2: worn out by their other teams. I mean, because their
- 26:46Speaker 2: starting rotation is giving them some length and their bullpen
- 26:50Speaker 2: is there's a lot of new guys with Bednar stepping
- 26:54Speaker 2: up that is huge. I think Luke Weaver may have
- 26:58Speaker 2: come back from the il to soon that was during
- 27:01Speaker 2: this August first stint, and they have nine games to
- 27:07Speaker 2: figure out who is going to be the hottest going
- 27:10Speaker 2: into into the playoffs for them, because that's who they're
- 27:15Speaker 2: gonna ride. There's no going to well, you know, let's
- 27:20Speaker 2: let's find a soft landing spot. Every time I turn
- 27:22Speaker 2: on the Yes Network, that's what I hear. Oh yeah,
- 27:25Speaker 2: Aaron Boone's looking for a soft landing spot here for
- 27:28Speaker 2: Devin Williams, for Kabilo Duval for.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Who else.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Like it's basically lighter Junior and Bednar and Fernando Cruz.
- 27:39Speaker 2: If he's throwing strikes, you can't find a soft landing
- 27:42Speaker 2: spot in the playoffs. You need, in my opinion, if
- 27:45Speaker 2: you want to win it all, you need four or
- 27:47Speaker 2: five guys that you can count on. If you want
- 27:51Speaker 2: to hope, you have three guys, and right now I
- 27:54Speaker 2: think they're right in that three guy. I hope they
- 27:57Speaker 2: all do well and we get seven from Max Freed.
- 28:02Speaker 1: A win on Friday, guys, puts the Bombers twenty games
- 28:05Speaker 1: over five hundred for the first time this season. So
- 28:08Speaker 1: it's not like they're not winning games, but they definitely
- 28:11Speaker 1: need to play more fundamentally sound baseball. Obviously pitch defense,
- 28:14Speaker 1: you guys know it better than anybody else having been
- 28:16Speaker 1: in this league. As long as you have really quick Trevor,
- 28:20Speaker 1: because before we get to break, we've had this conversation
- 28:22Speaker 1: a lot. It's been the top of the top of DuJour,
- 28:25Speaker 1: if you will, who's your AL MVP, Judge Brawley.
- 28:31Speaker 3: It's the boring answer.
- 28:32Speaker 5: It's very likely, Judge, I think things needed to happen
- 28:37Speaker 5: or still I mean it's still possible. I think if
- 28:40Speaker 5: there's in this last week major heroics from cal Rawley
- 28:44Speaker 5: that in a Mariner sweep of the Houston Astros to
- 28:47Speaker 5: give him. The debate like if something like that happens,
- 28:50Speaker 5: or he somehow gets the sixty homers or even crazier,
- 28:54Speaker 5: you know, he's hit multi homers and ten games is
- 28:57Speaker 5: here if he just rattled three more off and got
- 28:59Speaker 5: to close to Judge's record, I think that story might
- 29:03Speaker 5: push him forward. But just the offensive differences are just
- 29:08Speaker 5: he's just eighty points ahead of him in batting average.
- 29:11Speaker 5: I understand the batting average isn't our end. I'll be
- 29:14Speaker 5: all a statistic, but like almost one hundred points, that's
- 29:17Speaker 5: just too much in my opinion.
- 29:20Speaker 3: But you know who, you never know. There's something called
- 29:23Speaker 3: voter fatigue.
- 29:24Speaker 5: Sometimes you just want to see a different option if
- 29:25Speaker 5: it's really close. This has happened a lot in the
- 29:29Speaker 5: history of baseball, so but I think just in terms
- 29:32Speaker 5: of just general straight up most valuable player, I.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Mean, it's just really hard to say.
- 29:37Speaker 5: It's not an inn Judge every single year, So it's
- 29:40Speaker 5: probably he's probably the front runner if we're going objectively
- 29:44Speaker 5: on statistics.
- 29:46Speaker 3: But that's not how humans work, so we'll see.
- 29:48Speaker 4: I get it.
- 29:48Speaker 1: I think I don't think there's a wrong answer. I mean, everybody,
- 29:51Speaker 1: of course, who wants the other guys going to say
- 29:53Speaker 1: that they made the wrong decision, But I completely understand
- 29:56Speaker 1: where you're coming from. Don't look now, guys, but the Dodgers'
- 29:59Speaker 1: pitching staff looks pretty.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Deep, pretty pretty.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Good, Bob Nightingale. The Dodger starting rotation continues to thrive,
- 30:05Speaker 1: giving up only one hit the entire game, Winning two
- 30:07Speaker 1: to one over the Giants. They boost their lead to
- 30:10Speaker 1: three games over the pottery is the pottery is lost yesterday.
- 30:13Speaker 1: So the magic number for Los Angeles guys is six.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Trevor May, I'll ask you, uh, do the Dodgers have
- 30:19Speaker 1: the best starting rotation right now? Season ends today, Game
- 30:24Speaker 1: one starts tomorrow. Who has a better rotation?
- 30:28Speaker 5: Well, we're going to talk about the big three? Uh
- 30:31Speaker 5: in Snell last now and Yamamoto. That is not one
- 30:35Speaker 5: that you want to run into. I would say, yeah,
- 30:40Speaker 5: I'll give them a yes. I think that three those
- 30:42Speaker 5: three guys dialed in which Bill accounts they are. That's
- 30:46Speaker 5: that's not someone that's a buzzsaw. That's a potential bud saw.
- 30:49Speaker 5: You got to get to you know, you want to
- 30:50Speaker 5: get through one guy usually and then try to work
- 30:53Speaker 5: your work your way feel better about facing that second
- 30:56Speaker 5: third guy, That's not the case here. So I would
- 30:58Speaker 5: say position wise for a playoff series, they're just as good,
- 31:02Speaker 5: probably the best.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Eric. I think it's fair to say that they are
- 31:05Speaker 1: in the National League. But is Seattle's rotation better than
- 31:08Speaker 1: the Dodgers?
- 31:10Speaker 2: I mean, if you take Seattle's pitchers best years, Yeah, Brent,
- 31:14Speaker 2: I mean right now, no, No, they are literally what
- 31:19Speaker 2: the tweet said, unhittable. Now, how is this going to
- 31:23Speaker 2: continue to translate when Will Smith comes back and is
- 31:27Speaker 2: the main catcher. Because I give a lot of credit
- 31:29Speaker 2: Ben Roarved, who will be on the show next week,
- 31:33Speaker 2: has come in here and absolutely put the golden fingers down.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I guess they don't put fingers down anymore. He's hitting
- 31:39Speaker 2: the golden buttons. This starting rotation has not gotten hit
- 31:45Speaker 2: I'm not I don't even care about strikeouts. Yamamoto I
- 31:48Speaker 2: think was getting squeezed, you know, his last doubting So
- 31:52Speaker 2: I sit there and I go, you know, he's still
- 31:55Speaker 2: able to do this when the strike zone last night
- 31:58Speaker 2: was like this big like these guys are getting outs
- 32:02Speaker 2: in the zone and they're getting him to chase late.
- 32:05Speaker 2: It's they are hitting on all cylinders. I don't think
- 32:08Speaker 2: there's a starting rotation that's close right now.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Benny Rose coming on the show next week. You guys
- 32:13Speaker 1: got Ben Rourtvett. He's a Dodger legend, playing out of
- 32:17Speaker 1: his mind right now.
- 32:19Speaker 2: All of his muscles, all of his muscles.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 32:24Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 32:26Speaker 4: That's what he said.
- 32:27Speaker 1: That's what he said. You thought the other day, guys,
- 32:33Speaker 1: when Brett Snell Blake Snell rather did not want to
- 32:36Speaker 1: get taken out of the game. Rtt Bollinger reporting that.
- 32:38Speaker 1: You say Kakuchi was frustrated that he was taken out
- 32:41Speaker 1: of the game in the sixth All year have been
- 32:43Speaker 1: grinding for the team, right So in that spot, I
- 32:45Speaker 1: wanted to be trusted a little bit more, and I
- 32:47Speaker 1: felt like I wasn't trusted in that moment. Of course,
- 32:50Speaker 1: he said this through his interpreter, Yusuke Oshima. You want this, though,
- 32:55Speaker 1: don't you, Eric. You want a guy that doesn't want
- 32:57Speaker 1: to be taken out of the game. Give me the ball,
- 32:59Speaker 1: Let me stay in the game, Let me get out
- 33:01Speaker 1: of my own traffic if I caused it, let me
- 33:04Speaker 1: fix my own mess.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and maybe he's been watching his bullpen give it
- 33:08Speaker 2: up like they did last night. When his fellow starters
- 33:13Speaker 2: get out there, I think a guy he's thirty four now,
- 33:18Speaker 2: I think he definitely deserves the chance to get himself
- 33:21Speaker 2: out of his own mess, especially in a game where
- 33:26Speaker 2: they're out of it like the Angels. The Angels are
- 33:29Speaker 2: out of it. They were in this game, they're out
- 33:32Speaker 2: of it for the season.
- 33:34Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 33:34Speaker 2: I think there's something to be said, but I also
- 33:38Speaker 2: know that the Angels just haven't figured out how to
- 33:41Speaker 2: win games. And you have to be able to trust
- 33:43Speaker 2: that the guy you're bringing in is going to get
- 33:44Speaker 2: the job done. He didn't last night. So I applaug
- 33:48Speaker 2: Kakuchi for saying what he said. I agree.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I mean, you want a guy that wants to take
- 33:54Speaker 1: the ball, Trevor. Is there a situation there where you
- 33:57Speaker 1: sometimes you have to save a guy from himself.
- 34:01Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, this wasn't one of those situations. I'm fairly
- 34:05Speaker 5: certain Yusee Kaguchi is the highest paid guy in their
- 34:08Speaker 5: rotation as well. He's yeah, he's he's been around.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Uh.
- 34:15Speaker 5: If anyone deserves to be given a little bit more
- 34:19Speaker 5: leashed there, it's him. And I understand it's frustrating because
- 34:22Speaker 5: he does look around. He sees like, you know, I
- 34:24Speaker 5: don't have confidence that this game is going to be
- 34:26Speaker 5: locked down the way that I would prefer to be.
- 34:28Speaker 5: But you know, even beyond that, we're out of it.
- 34:31Speaker 5: We're out of it again, and uh, we need to
- 34:34Speaker 5: stop acting as if we got to.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Like we're playing the game.
- 34:38Speaker 5: By the by the numbers every moment here right now,
- 34:41Speaker 5: because it just doesn't matter. I can you know, I
- 34:44Speaker 5: me being able to get through this is uh entirely plausible.
- 34:48Speaker 5: And even if you don't, you're not confident from a
- 34:50Speaker 5: number standpoint that I can do it?
- 34:52Speaker 3: Does it really matter now?
- 34:54Speaker 5: So it's what I'm always for guys trying to go
- 34:57Speaker 5: get that extra because you were able to do it.
- 35:00Speaker 5: That could mean pay dividends long term in a confidence way,
- 35:03Speaker 5: especially young guys. I want young guys the opportunity to
- 35:05Speaker 5: get out of owning innings more often. So I'm definitely
- 35:07Speaker 5: in that camp as well. I just think it's in
- 35:10Speaker 5: terms of development or just building confidence and feeling good
- 35:13Speaker 5: about how you're ending the year.
- 35:14Speaker 3: It's just goes long way.
- 35:15Speaker 5: Just getting that one extra hout or getting out of
- 35:16Speaker 5: a tough situation when you're tired. It's really important for
- 35:19Speaker 5: pitchrisfield do that.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Two completely different scenarios. Milwaukee Brewers, of course, have already
- 35:24Speaker 1: clinched their division. They're trying to figure out seating as
- 35:26Speaker 1: far as that is concerned, And of course the Los
- 35:28Speaker 1: Angeles Angels have been eliminated once again, have not made
- 35:31Speaker 1: the postseason. Guys since twenty eleven. Let's talk a bit
- 35:35Speaker 1: about the Mets beating the pod Sorry, sorry, twenty fourteen,
- 35:40Speaker 1: eleven years. That's what it was, eleven years, not twenty eleven.
- 35:43Speaker 1: My bad. The Mets beat the Padres. Rookie Jonahtong went
- 35:46Speaker 1: five innings with one run. He had eight punch outs yesterday. Again,
- 35:51Speaker 1: a lot of teams at this point in the season
- 35:53Speaker 1: look into the young arms eric to either get them
- 35:57Speaker 1: into the Promised Land or continue to get further into
- 36:00Speaker 1: the promised land. What do you like about Tong?
- 36:04Speaker 2: I mean, just the fact that he is not afraid
- 36:06Speaker 2: to throw the ball in the strike zone. He was
- 36:08Speaker 2: facing a lineup that on paper looks pretty scary right now.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I don't think they're taking their big league wood up
- 36:15Speaker 2: to the plate, but it's definitely a team that is
- 36:18Speaker 2: a scary looking lineup for a young pitcher, and he
- 36:22Speaker 2: attacked the zone yesterday. Obviously everyone's gonna say, oh, is
- 36:25Speaker 2: it Tim Lincicom. It's unbelievable. Tim tong You know, I've seen,
- 36:30Speaker 2: you know, the Mets fans had had tongs out. They
- 36:32Speaker 2: brought tongs to the game every strikeout. So it was
- 36:35Speaker 2: creative the Mets fans. They need gimmicks, you know, to
- 36:38Speaker 2: keep themselves in this season. But I just can't believe
- 36:42Speaker 2: how many rookies we've seen step up in big situations,
- 36:47Speaker 2: in situations where teams normally a rookie comes up at
- 36:51Speaker 2: this time of year for a playoff contending team, and
- 36:53Speaker 2: you say, man, we really need this guy to step
- 36:56Speaker 2: into our fifth spot, our fourth spot. Nolan McLain has
- 36:59Speaker 2: pitched in Game one for the Mets. If they make
- 37:01Speaker 2: the playoffs, Jonah Tongue, he's gonna have to put together
- 37:06Speaker 2: another start. I think I think sprot in him didn't
- 37:10Speaker 2: do what McClain did. But what McClain did was epic.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I mean, you Savage Trey, you Savage up North in
- 37:17Speaker 2: the six they don't even need a starting pitcher, and
- 37:20Speaker 2: he stepped up and showed, man, you gotta get some
- 37:23Speaker 2: innings out of this guy in the playoffs, like it
- 37:26Speaker 2: is a rare thing. And I always bring up Brandon
- 37:28Speaker 2: Finnigan in twenty fourteen because when you're rookie, you are
- 37:34Speaker 2: going through everything that rookies go through normally, where you're
- 37:38Speaker 2: like which side is our clubhouse? On? How much do
- 37:41Speaker 2: I pay clubhouse dues? Do I have to carry the
- 37:44Speaker 2: beer onto the plane? Like what do I have to do?
- 37:47Speaker 2: And then they're going out there and just absolutely dealing.
- 37:50Speaker 2: And I loved to see what Brandon Finnigan did, so
- 37:53Speaker 2: I if I'm run an organization, I'm doing this. If
- 37:56Speaker 2: you look at a guy and he has stuff like
- 37:58Speaker 2: tongue has, I'm throwing them out there.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you're looking at these guys to trev and you're
- 38:04Speaker 1: looking at them. Back in the day when September callups
- 38:07Speaker 1: happened and you can bring you could bring up nine
- 38:09Speaker 1: hundred and seventy two people, and the clubhouse was like
- 38:11Speaker 1: everyone's smashed together. Sometimes you just needed guys to come
- 38:15Speaker 1: up and give your starters a blow. Sometimes you just
- 38:18Speaker 1: needed an extra arm. You needed to give your bullpen
- 38:20Speaker 1: guy arrest or whatever it was. Now, if they're being
- 38:22Speaker 1: called up, they're expected to get into the game and
- 38:25Speaker 1: they're expected to produce. And they're looking at these young guys,
- 38:28Speaker 1: the Peyton Tollies of the world, the Earlies of the world,
- 38:31Speaker 1: the Tongs, the you know, the Y Savage in Toronto
- 38:34Speaker 1: who's probably going to come out of the bullpen for
- 38:35Speaker 1: the Blue Jays in the postseason. Does that surprise you
- 38:39Speaker 1: that they're looking at these guys as being key productive
- 38:42Speaker 1: members of what they're trying to accomplish. It almost seems
- 38:45Speaker 1: like that particular script has shifted where you're not just
- 38:48Speaker 1: a body anymore. You're not just a warm bodied individual.
- 38:53Speaker 1: You're expected to produce.
- 38:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's a product of the rosters going
- 38:59Speaker 5: from forty possibly to twenty eight. If you have a
- 39:02Speaker 5: spot on this team, we're gonna need you to play.
- 39:04Speaker 5: You have to play, and you have to play regularly.
- 39:06Speaker 5: And that's why it's usually a starting pitcher, six man rotation.
- 39:10Speaker 5: And I think that the league is getting younger and
- 39:13Speaker 5: younger and younger, so we're seeing rookies kind of become
- 39:15Speaker 5: bigger roles earlier when they come up. But rookies, rookies
- 39:20Speaker 5: coming up and being successful has a long history of
- 39:24Speaker 5: playing a huge role in a September playoff push or
- 39:28Speaker 5: even a good run into the playoffs. Corey Seeger came
- 39:31Speaker 5: on and you went crazy and then became a big
- 39:34Speaker 5: reason for the Dodgers' success that year. We had Evan
- 39:39Speaker 5: Carter as soon as early as twenty twenty three coming
- 39:41Speaker 5: up in September. I was their for his debut and
- 39:44Speaker 5: then he became a huge part of that team on
- 39:46Speaker 5: their run. Like this is something that always happens, and
- 39:49Speaker 5: if you get young guys who are able to do
- 39:51Speaker 5: it immediately, Like what is the Met's biggest issue?
- 39:53Speaker 3: Starting pitching?
- 39:54Speaker 5: Like they lost everybody, lost everybody to start the year,
- 39:56Speaker 5: and they lost everybody again halfway through the year.
- 39:58Speaker 3: So they needed guys to come step up.
- 40:00Speaker 5: They've had They've had McLean who is going to start
- 40:04Speaker 5: Game one?
- 40:04Speaker 3: He better?
- 40:05Speaker 2: Uh?
- 40:05Speaker 5: And then you got Tom and David Peterson. This depth
- 40:10Speaker 5: is huge and for them to they come in and
- 40:13Speaker 5: they know that, like they know that they're gonna have
- 40:15Speaker 5: to throw meaningful innings in order to pull this thing off.
- 40:17Speaker 5: And knowing that right away instead of being like I
- 40:20Speaker 5: don't know if I'm gonna be called on to do
- 40:21Speaker 5: this because there's fifty guys here, that's a big difference.
- 40:24Speaker 5: It's easier to make that jump when it's kind of
- 40:28Speaker 5: like you look around, you're like, oh, it's me like that.
- 40:30Speaker 5: Sometimes you got to be thrown into the fire. And
- 40:32Speaker 5: and that's when you see guys step up or not
- 40:35Speaker 5: and start their careers out well. And it's nice to
- 40:36Speaker 5: see so many young guys really stepping up.
- 40:39Speaker 1: It really is. We seized it off the top of
- 40:41Speaker 1: this segment, so we got to get to it. But
- 40:43Speaker 1: brandon Nimo had some funny comments. Abby Misstroco tweeted, brandon
- 40:47Speaker 1: Neimo said, you miss all of the shots you don't
- 40:50Speaker 1: take when talking about his home run. When asked if
- 40:52Speaker 1: he was quoting Wayne Gretzky or Michael Scott of the Office,
- 40:55Speaker 1: he said he was quoting brandon Nimo. He did a
- 40:57Speaker 1: little bit of a Ricky Henderson there, talking about the
- 41:00Speaker 1: third person, right, he said, brandon Nimo had that quote.
- 41:04Speaker 1: So interesting stuff from the Mets again, we'll see hanging
- 41:07Speaker 1: on for dear life and that final spot in the
- 41:10Speaker 1: National League. While the card Well Mariners win guys back
- 41:13Speaker 1: tied for first in the AL West. This whole AO
- 41:15Speaker 1: West situation is so unbelievable. Seattle's now tied atop the
- 41:19Speaker 1: Ale West with Houston eighty four and sixty nine. The
- 41:22Speaker 1: two clubs open a crucial three game set beginning to
- 41:25Speaker 1: day at dyk In Park that will not only determine
- 41:27Speaker 1: the playoff tie breaker, but could decide the division title
- 41:30Speaker 1: as well. E K, which way does this go?
- 41:35Speaker 2: One team is going to win the first game and
- 41:36Speaker 2: then the next two games. Another team is going to
- 41:39Speaker 2: win the next two games. That's how it's going to go.
- 41:42Speaker 2: This is going must see this, really I see. I
- 41:46Speaker 2: see the Mariners taking this series.
- 41:48Speaker 4: Why. I have no idea.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Everything about the last eight years of baseball should tell
- 41:53Speaker 2: me Nope, the Astros are going to do it. But
- 41:57Speaker 2: in my mind, I'm going the Mariners taking this series.
- 42:01Speaker 2: I just feel like their pitching is gonna line up
- 42:04Speaker 2: to be able to attack these guys. I feel like
- 42:07Speaker 2: cal Rawley would love to play in a tiny park
- 42:10Speaker 2: like Daikan, and I think they're gonna be putting East
- 42:14Speaker 2: Sooc parades in the lineup here at some point this weekend,
- 42:18Speaker 2: and he's not gonna be able to run at all,
- 42:20Speaker 2: and he's not gonna be I just I just feel
- 42:22Speaker 2: like things are lining up for the Mariners to do it.
- 42:25Speaker 2: So history will tell you.
- 42:27Speaker 4: I'm wrong, Trevor.
- 42:29Speaker 1: He was talking about Estoc Parades not being able to run.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Jordon Alvarez probably not gonna be back until the postseason.
- 42:35Speaker 1: But that's a guy you don't need him to run
- 42:37Speaker 1: because he can hit home runs. Are they bringing back
- 42:40Speaker 1: ESOC too quickly? I mean, I guess they don't have
- 42:43Speaker 1: a choice, or do they? Oh, mic Is, do they
- 42:51Speaker 1: have a choice? Derek? Do they have a choice?
- 42:54Speaker 2: No, they don't have a choice. They need that offense.
- 42:57Speaker 2: But again, guys just keep stepping up if it means
- 43:00Speaker 2: bring I guess there's no direct correlations between Estop Paradis
- 43:04Speaker 2: and that cole. But like, they just find guys. They
- 43:09Speaker 2: find guys to step in. They put them in situations
- 43:12Speaker 2: that have success, and dudes step up and do it
- 43:15Speaker 2: like that's just what the Astros do. Estot Paradis is
- 43:18Speaker 2: a better hitter than anything they have on the bench,
- 43:20Speaker 2: So yes, you need them in there, but they haven't
- 43:23Speaker 2: needed him since he's been gone. They haven't needed your
- 43:25Speaker 2: Don since he's been gone. It's just it's a crazy
- 43:28Speaker 2: anomaly that doesn't make baseball sense.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Because all they do is win, win, win, No matter what.
- 43:36Speaker 2: I think.
- 43:36Speaker 1: That's a song. Do you go like this? Can I
- 43:38Speaker 1: get a All I do is win win win?
- 43:41Speaker 2: Oh no, no, no matter what, no matter what.
- 43:44Speaker 1: You got it there say that. Guys. I don't know
- 43:49Speaker 1: what you think about this, but to me, this stinks.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Apple TV gets the game tonight for Kershaw's last regular
- 43:57Speaker 1: season start of his career, and they're not simulcasting it
- 44:02Speaker 1: on Sports net LA. That bums me out.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Big fail. I know they didn't plan this, I get it.
- 44:11Speaker 1: No, they didn't. They didn't to be sure.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Big fail.
- 44:15Speaker 2: I mean, I guess this is why Apple pays this
- 44:18Speaker 2: kind of cash, you know, I guess their Their answer
- 44:22Speaker 2: to that is okay, well just sign up for Apple TV,
- 44:25Speaker 2: sign up for our description. You know. It's like it's
- 44:28Speaker 2: like when they got the Amazon games for football last year.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Amazon had just a massive increase in subscriptions.
- 44:36Speaker 1: But it sucks and why they do it, but it's
- 44:39Speaker 1: just it's unfortunate. It's like I remember when I first
- 44:42Speaker 1: started working for Sports net LA and it wasn't widely
- 44:46Speaker 1: distributed and most folks missed out on Vin Scully's last
- 44:52Speaker 1: year televising and broadcasting. So this is just a bummer.
- 44:56Speaker 1: You know, I get it. It's not Apple's fault. It's
- 44:58Speaker 1: not Sports and LA's fault. It's just the i'ming issue.
- 45:00Speaker 1: But this stinks. Blake Harris, you know, obviously tweeting that
- 45:04Speaker 1: the big chunk of fans are not going to be
- 45:06Speaker 1: able to watch the game. I mean, that's a bummer, right,
- 45:09Speaker 1: I mean, Trevor, I know you respect Clayton Krusha obviously,
- 45:12Speaker 1: I think we all do, but to not be able
- 45:14Speaker 1: to see his last start at home in a regular
- 45:16Speaker 1: season hopefully he gets, you know, some postseason innings, but
- 45:19Speaker 1: you'd want to be able to see every pitch that
- 45:21Speaker 1: Clayton throws tonight.
- 45:24Speaker 5: Yeah, It's stinks. It's just it's it's unfortunate, and I
- 45:27Speaker 5: mean maybe I don't know how you avoid this other
- 45:33Speaker 5: than like Clayton announces it a month ago, Like I
- 45:37Speaker 5: really don't. I really don't know how you could, how
- 45:39Speaker 5: you can do it. Don't really blame anyone for drop
- 45:41Speaker 5: the ball on it. It just it's unfortunate. But it
- 45:45Speaker 5: does look like he's going to have an opportunity to
- 45:47Speaker 5: throw in the postseason again, and hopefully that is a
- 45:51Speaker 5: home game. But we would I think we would all
- 45:53Speaker 5: rather not have to cross our fingers if that happens, so.
- 45:57Speaker 1: No question about that. Clayton, in true Clayton fashion, didn't
- 46:02Speaker 1: want to announce it early, I believe because he doesn't
- 46:04Speaker 1: want the pomp and circumstance and twenty seven, you know,
- 46:06Speaker 1: twenty nine other teams given them all the stuff, so
- 46:09Speaker 1: that's why he announced it today. A j Ellis knows
- 46:11Speaker 1: Clayton Kershaw better than anybody. We're going to talk to
- 46:13Speaker 1: him next. What's up, Eric? He looks like you have
- 46:15Speaker 1: something to say now.
- 46:16Speaker 2: I was just gonna say you got the Legacy pick
- 46:17Speaker 2: for the All Star Game though? Didn't he He did?
- 46:21Speaker 2: He did, Max, Max, Scherzer and Verlander didn't. Do you
- 46:24Speaker 2: think they turned it down?
- 46:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I don't want to put words in their mouth, but
- 46:29Speaker 1: we'd have to ask ask Ken. That's a good question.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Chandler Rome, who does a great job on the Crush
- 46:34Speaker 1: City Territory podcast here on the Foul Territory Network, had
- 46:37Speaker 1: this to say. The Astros plan to activate Estoch Parades
- 46:41Speaker 1: off the injured list prior to Tonight's game against the Maritors'
- 46:44Speaker 1: sources tell the athletic Parades has been out since July
- 46:47Speaker 1: nineteenth after suffering a severe right hamstring string. First on
- 46:51Speaker 1: it was Brian McTaggart, who works for MLB dot Com
- 46:53Speaker 1: covering the Strows.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Eric.
- 46:55Speaker 1: We've talked about it. Man Calf's hamstrings obliques, they're tricky.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I hope this isn't too soon.
- 47:03Speaker 4: I mean, it's so close to the end. You just.
- 47:06Speaker 2: You're just gonna get what you get from him. He's
- 47:09Speaker 2: not gonna have the fatigue factor, I don't think. But
- 47:13Speaker 2: you also just you don't have top high end speed.
- 47:16Speaker 2: You never had it. But you're going to see a
- 47:19Speaker 2: lot of gian Carlos Stanton type of runs. And is
- 47:23Speaker 2: he going to be able to go in a You're
- 47:25Speaker 2: gonna play some close games with the Mariners this series.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Is he gonna get a base hit or walk? Because
- 47:30Speaker 2: he does a great job of handling the zone so well.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Is he gonna walk and then a base hit? Is
- 47:36Speaker 2: he gonna be able to go first to third? That's
- 47:38Speaker 2: probably why they're activating him, because he says he can.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Is it at a job? Can he score from second?
- 47:44Speaker 4: We'll see, Trevor.
- 47:46Speaker 1: They have to do it right, I mean they've got
- 47:47Speaker 1: to get into I mean they're gonna get in, I
- 47:49Speaker 1: would think, unless the Guardians make them like whatever. I mean,
- 47:52Speaker 1: the Guardians do control their own destiny, but uh, it's
- 47:55Speaker 1: a matter of getting in or winning the division. I mean,
- 47:57Speaker 1: I guess they go for broke here.
- 48:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's it's an all hands on deck situation.
- 48:04Speaker 5: I think every single year there's guys with a legal,
- 48:07Speaker 5: little nagging injury going on or something where they're trying
- 48:11Speaker 5: to come back real quick. I remember back in twenty
- 48:14Speaker 5: twenty two, we had Starling Marte with his hands just
- 48:16Speaker 5: come in, no no rehab for the last week of
- 48:18Speaker 5: the season, just come in and he had no problems
- 48:21Speaker 5: with it. So that might be an issue or that
- 48:23Speaker 5: might that might be what happens, but they just need
- 48:26Speaker 5: him to swing it. That really at the end of
- 48:28Speaker 5: the day, they just really need him to swing it.
- 48:30Speaker 5: And I am a little bit I comes to this stuff.
- 48:34Speaker 5: Sometimes they'll get a little tricky, especially with hamstrings.

- 48:47Speaker 5: of like push him through the end and and you know,
- 48:50Speaker 5: getting ten more days maybe make him ready for the playoffs.
- 48:53Speaker 3: And that's what the problem is.
- 48:54Speaker 5: I hope that's not the case, but if not, you know,
- 48:57Speaker 5: I think anyone in that lineup, say, will take all
- 48:59Speaker 5: the helping get so I guess we'll have to see
