- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Hey, what's up, everyone?
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: We're going to do these all season.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Jim, can I coax you into these each week live here on the podcast?
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can do more.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: We can actually do true post-game shows if the games don't start 21-0 and end late
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: at night when you have a first grader.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, that was fun.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Driving back to the Southern Tier.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I think I got back, and I wrote my whole story Friday morning, so...
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Didn't even write it in the press box,
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: and it was still like a 3 a.m. by the time I made it back to the driveway.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: But that, hey, it was worth it.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: That was quite a scene.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you gotta go ahead.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You know, there's been weeks, months, years of hype.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I feel like we've been hearing about this new stadium for a very long time, and...
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The wind confusion and the verticality of the seating and the bisons that are going
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: to be out front.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: The, you know, the, the,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: the cool design of the blue and red and the,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: so it's been a lot of buildup, a lot of buildup.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And honestly,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: with anything in life,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: when you hear about something all of the time,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: very rarely does reality mirror what we've been told.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And I, Hand to God, I was blown away.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I was really blown away by the atmosphere.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: It felt organic.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: It felt real.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just artificial.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And we can nitpick, right?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: One Republican halftime and bare naked ladies singing the Canadian National.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Whatever.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: When it comes to the football and the feel and the fans
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: and Jared Goff saying himself,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we screwed up a bunch pre-snap because of the noise.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And Connor McGovern, I caught up with him after the game.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: He said it was so loud.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: when their defense is on the field,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: he's on the bench talking to Pat Meyer, the offensive line coach.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Pat Meyer has to like crouch down low and their faces are basically pressing up
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: against each other.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: And they can still barely hear each other what they're saying.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: It was it was that loud.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And it's.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: You know, I think it's the perfect combination of you can't have a dome in Western New York.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: No dome.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I know you don't.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: You were pro dome back in the day.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: You can't have it in these conditions when they can be such an intrinsic advantage
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: for the Buffalo Bills.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: But they kind of found a nice happy medium where 64% of the fans are covered.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: You reposition the stadium.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You've got the wind confusion, all of that.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: So you preserve what makes Buffalo, Buffalo.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And I mean, you couldn't script a better game, right?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: 21, nothing like that.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Getting the fans into it, taking the ball, right?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Joe Brady takes the ball.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: He says, we want to score right off the bat, set the tone.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Deion Dawkins hit on it.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: That's the beauty of having an offensive coach.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: They're saying the quiet part out loud, Jim.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: They love having an offensive coach who's 36 years old and understands
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: that Josh Allen is the center of your universe.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: What a concept.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, I like where you're at.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: You hit on the main topics.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: That being number one.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: I think we clearly know now it had nothing to do with the defense being poor.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: It was time for a change.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Simple as that.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Not good, not bad.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Hey, it happens in life in general.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: You can be at one place too long at a job, and at the end of the day, this is a job.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: The voice is You don't even have to know much or be around football like you
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: or I have been around these players' locker rooms to know.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: You think you used the word organic.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Everything about the Bills right now seems organic and natural.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: They are happy.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: You don't hear offensive linemen laughing and joking
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: and Deion Dawkins predicting things,
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: just saying we're going to do some special things on offense.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, that is unheard of.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And it's all because of 17, and we'll get into that.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: But it's certainly not because this whole quarterback,
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: the whole change did not happen because of the Buffalo Bills defense.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: The last, oh, I want to touch on the stadium.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: As you said,
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: I do prefer,
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: my theory on,
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: my thought,
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: my theory,
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: my thought on football indoors is I don't want special talent to have
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: that stripped away in the playoffs when it gets wintertime.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: That's the issue I have in the Northeast.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: When I won that Super Bowl,
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: lucky enough to be a part of the Saints as a scout, man,
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: we had Breeze,
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: we had that offensive machine,
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: and we're going to talk about it because that's what the bills are on offense,
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: a machine.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: And when you have that, I didn't care about anything except I never wanted to play in the wind.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: I did not want Drew Breeze to play in the wind.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And that's what they tried to pinpoint with this, Terry Pagula and everyone.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And I love, and I'm all for.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Nobody wants the 50 mile per hour wins.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: And I'm all for.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Unless you're Bill Belichick.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: But I'm all for, we can talk about him too, North Carolina.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: But we are all, I am all for advances in everything.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: If they think they can build something that still remains outdoors, but they can at least.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: At least make the game playable if you get one of those tough days.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: I'm all for that.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: So yes.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, but let's get back to where I want to talk about.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Can I just give you a funny story on that real quick?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: So when I sat down with Terry Pagula, the story is at golongtd.com for everyone.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: If you want to check that out, we talked for...
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: More than an hour about his vision for the stadium, keeping the bills in Western New York.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Lest we forget,
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: it wasn't that long ago that there was frustration that turned to anger
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: toward Ralph Wilson because there's no estate plan.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: It was just a...
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: It was just a given.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: The Buffalo Bills are going to leave.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: It's manifest destiny.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: That's how the NFL works.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Millions become billions.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Billions will become a trillion before we know it for the league.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Los Angeles wanted teams.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Toronto, like they had the dalliance up there, and that obviously pissed off locals.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, is this like the precursor, or is this a way to survive in Western New York?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And then you've got San Antonio, Austin.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, the threat of the Bills leaving the market,
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I think everybody listening that lives here
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: in western New York can probably remember where they were.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: It was pre-Twitter, maybe a year or two, pre-social media as we know it today.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: It was word of mouth.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: It made the rounds.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, my God.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Ralph Wilson has passed away.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Now that frustration is doom and dread and there's no more football in Buffalo.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: And then it proved to be false.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Terry Bogle buys the Sabres.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Ralph's health declines.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: And Terry takes you through all of this in the story.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: So thanks so much for checking it out.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I thought he was very candid, very authentic.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And the reason I bring him up is he tells a funny story.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: From 2021,
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: the perfect game against the Patriots when the Bills scored on all seven
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: of their possessions.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Seven touchdowns,
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: seven possessions in seven degrees,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: by the way, against Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Josh Allen is in the locker room and he's talking to Brian Dable.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And he goes, man, Dabes, I really effed up us getting a dome, didn't I?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: And Dable goes, look behind you.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: And Terry Bagula is standing right there.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And says, yep, you did.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: So you've got a quarterback who, oh,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: by the way,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: after last night,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: he now has 10 games of two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Nobody else has more than four.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: So he's big enough.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: He's strong enough, athletic enough to do whatever in any conditions.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: He's central to the excitement around the stadium.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: It's called Highmark Stadium.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: It's the house that Josh Allen built.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: He will be associated with this stadium.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: For as long as he wants to play football because, I mean,
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: we might as well dive into this topic because I never get tired of talking
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: about Josh Allen, writing about Josh Allen.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: He blows us away every time he takes the field in a new way.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: I feel Joe Brady is using contours of the field, calling offense in a way he didn't call before.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: It is new.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: It is different.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: It's organic in its own way.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I feel like this offense is...
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Is unleashed in new ways, right?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: They did whatever the hell they wanted to.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: They spammed the same rushing play repeatedly.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Jackson Hawks, we got into that after the game, you know, and also they were explosive.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: We'll get into the Josh Palmer touchdown,
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: which Kurt Warner breaking that down kind of blew my mind.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: But that's my takeaway, Jim.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: They just did whatever they wanted to against a team of Super Bowl aspirations.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: It's on a level.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: It's almost like I feel like because we've done this pod now with Josh Allen this whole time.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: And you and I have,
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: we've talked about him being he's the right guy,
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: the right guy, the answer, the answer.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: He'll get there.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: He'll get there.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Super Bowl.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: It's now everybody's seeing it, I think, officially.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: He took it.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: It somehow went to another level that I didn't think was even possible offensively.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: This is where it was a couple years ago.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: We talked about the first half is everything with great offenses.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And this is what's going to lead into the issue with this team.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: You can win shootouts.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: That's fine if you want to live that way.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: But right now, giving up yards is okay.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: When you get leads like the Bills are going to have, you're going to give up yards.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: You can't give up points.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: You have to clamp it so you can run the ball in the fourth quarter and choke them out.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: And take advantage of your lead.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Shootouts is a tough way to live.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: And right now, that's where they're at.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Yes, they're playing productive.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: But tell me this, Tyler, because you've been around it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: There's plenty of Rex Ryan influence on this defense,
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: which I'm not saying that is a good or a bad thing.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Because Rex Ryan, obviously, that resume speaks for itself.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: The defense can be a headache.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: But I see plenty of it.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: I saw all the craziness when I saw the lineups last night.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Linebackers lining up in three techniques.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: The way they're using all the pass rushers is different.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: But they're winning by alignment.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: You don't really know what they're playing.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: The mix of zone man is all over.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: But I also notice confusion.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: I've seen Cole Bishop and Bernard looking at each other, having issues.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: That's every defense.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: I'm not blaming anything.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: It's a new defense.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: It's going to happen.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying it's a big deal.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: The big deal is you aren't stopping anybody.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: You can tell me what you want about we're making plays when it counts,
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: but the Detroit had a chance in that game.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: There's always – when you allow teams to keep scoring, they won't go away.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And that's why I always use that phrase,
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: choke them out with the running game in the fourth quarter because you can do it.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: This defense – I'm going to let you get into this, and here's my last thing with this defense.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: I made a statement on our pod that there is nobody on the defense that scares you.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: They have two defensive ends in Russo and Chubb
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: who are quality starting defensive ends in the NFL.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Both winnable.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: We say win with starters, however you want to phrase it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: They are fine.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: And I'm not trying to take away from their talents.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: They're very good.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Walker, the defensive tackle, is an absolute ridiculous watch right now.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: It's like nothing we've seen in a while.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: It's Kale Campbell-ish with the length.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: That's the only comparison you can have when you're talking six, seven and a half.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: The craziness is he almost is just better off just playing reckless like he is,
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: and he's trying to throw people around, and it's inconsistent.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Nothing looks right what he does technique-wise.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: He's learning.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: He's figuring it out.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: I went back this morning and watched him at Kentucky on tape.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: To see what he looked like.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: And when I went back and watched his career in 2023 at Kentucky, he had seven and a half sacks.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Maybe this has been talked about and all that, but I'm just diving into him now.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: And it makes sense.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Just be reckless.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Just be reckless like you are, and you're going to have some bad plays.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: You're going to look goofy.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: He gets caught sometimes.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: He's 6'7".
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: He's going to get caught.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: He gets caught high.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: He jumps around blocks, creates holds.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: You notice there were some gaps for Detroit running the ball last night.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: A lot of times that's Walker getting, he's getting positioned.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: He's jumping in the wrong gap and they're just walling him off.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Not often, but I'm just saying he does have flaws.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Everybody does.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: That's the D line.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Linebackers in secondary, I don't see it, Tyler.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: I don't see the talent.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And that's where I'll leave it with you.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: And you can see where I'm at with it.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: And I have,
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: I have also all the numbers where the numbers are less than when McDermott was here
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: with points per play.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: And believe it or not, takeaways per game was better last year.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: So we can get into numbers if we want, but it's only two games on a new defense.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: So we got to let this play out.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's two ways to look at it because I think going into this 2026 season,
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: total transformation scheme-wise on defense, a lot of new faces too.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Everybody expected growing pains to an extent when you've got Texans,
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Lions, Rams, Chargers, Patriots, boom, out of the chute.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: You're not going to really do much in those exhibition games.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: So you only learn by doing.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And honestly, this is kind of how I saw it going.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I think they're going to a high risk, high reward scheme where you got Deion Walker.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Doing Deion Walker things up front.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Ed Oliver is that kind of player, too,
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: where you might get gashed,
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: but also you might shoot a gap and split a quarterback in half.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, Gregory Rousseau looks like the best version Gregory Rousseau has ever been.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: And then on the back end,
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: it's those communication issues that you have to work through because it is like,
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: okay.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: You're stunting and you're coming back.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: You're blitzing.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: You're going over here.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I'm covering for you.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: No, you're covering for me.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And it's a lot of moving parts all over the place.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, they gave up points.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: I never really felt, though, like the Lions were genuinely threatening to win this game.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe, but it's not in confidence that I had in the Bills' defense.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: It's the offense because they can toggle between different play styles.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: You've got, I mean, they can do whatever they want, and I think that helps your defense.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: The one drive that I come back to, it was,
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: in the second half,
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: the Lions,
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: they had just cut it to a 10-point game,
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: and you can just see, like Joe Brady decided, we are going to bleed this out.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: This will be A slow, torturous, painful death for you.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: 15 plays, 75 yards, 8 minutes and 22 seconds.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: One play is kind of feeding into the next.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: There's a real sequencing to everything they're doing in the run game
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: and play action and movement and misdirection.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Check out my column if you want to, guys.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Connor McGovern did a great job explaining the cohesion on the offensive line
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: where Connor McGovern's handle out of the protection that allows Josh Allen to look
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: at the outside and do more down the field.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: They're talking right up to the snap, and it's easier to do that when you're at home as well.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: And they play together forever.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And also, no Aaron Cromer, which we've gotten into.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: That's a big loss.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: But Conor McGovern made a quick point to say,
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: like, you've got a Cromer disciple as your offensive line coach, Pat Meyer.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: And then Austin Gunn, he's been there since 2022.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: He said, look, you've got to look at this assistant O-line coach.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: This dude is sleeping at the facility five nights a week.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And giving us everything we need in pass pro.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: He's like the pass pro mastermind for the Bills.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: So they have a lot of Cromer influence there still.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: And they play together.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: And Alec Anderson hasn't so far been much of a downgrade from David Edwards.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Did you see Alec Anderson light up Jack Campbell, by the way?
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: That was nice.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: That was definitely an all-old-school team.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Textbook, for sure.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, worthy.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: So you're keeping your somewhat compromised.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: In progress defense off the field, those eight and a half minutes.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: While you also have the quick strike capability.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Did I send you the clip from Kurt Warner?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Did you watch that?
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Him breaking down the touchdown to Joshua Palmer.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Quick synopsis for those who might have missed it.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, because it's weird to look in real time.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden, Joshua Palmer's just wide open, right?
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Like what the hell happened?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: And The Lions, they're going through it on defense.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: They've been subbing guys in and out.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: No Kirby Joseph, no Brian Branch.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: But Joshua Palmer, he said he kind of rerouted.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: He saw the safety had come down and took his route a different direction.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Simultaneously, the moment that that's happening, Josh Allen has two line defenders in his face.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: It looks like he's eyeing James Cook on that little flat route,
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: sneak route, Kurt Warner called it.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: But then he just,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: it's like he's seeing James Cook with one of his eyeballs,
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: and then with his other eyeball,
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: he sees Joshua Palmer down the field, because it all happened at once.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Pump fake into James Cook, boom.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Palmer, touchdown.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to disagree with you,
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: because these issues on defense can't come back to bite you in the ass.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: I saw it in Green Bay.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: 2011, Aaron Rodgers is the MVP.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: They're on the cover of SI.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finley, James Jones, Randall Cobb.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Weapons galore.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: They set all these records every single week.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: It kind of felt like this game, to be honest.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: This Lions game was so similar to all those Packer games in 2011 where
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: the Packers would get a big lead.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: The defense would give up yards and bunches and points.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And they were relying on a turnover.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: They had a ton of turnovers with Dom Capers that season.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: And that helped them.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: They went 15 and won.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: But then in the divisional round when the offense came back to earth and
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: the defense was still the defense, the Giants beat them.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: So it's 100%.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: It is something to keep an eye on,
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: as you like to say.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: How about this?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: It's two games in.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: So I am not rushing to judgment yet.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: I'm just seeing similarities.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: And the numbers say what they are after two games.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: It's also been...
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Crazy 10 days,
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: whatever it's been,
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: and you played two Super Bowl-worthy opponents,
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: and you're 2-0 with a first-year head coach.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Right out of a movie.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: The opening night.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: That was out of a movie last night, that you were there.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Like, everybody thinks the NFL is scripted.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: When you see the entrance for Josh Allen last night.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, my God.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: And then the performance he has, that's out of a movie.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Like, that doesn't happen.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: We always bring up Brett Favre with Josh Allen too.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: And Favre in those kind of moments,
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: you'd see a football go in the 14th row because his juices were just flowing.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: He was amped up.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And I think where Josh Allen has matured is he doesn't really have the – he used to.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: I have expected him to have a couple plays that first or second drive
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: that were like, holy hell, settle down.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: He was fine.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Because that place – I mean, that stadium was rocking.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: When they announced his name, I've never heard a noise like that.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: no, that sounded – I mean,
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: just watching it on TV,
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: when you can feel something – I said when you can feel it through the TV,
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: to be there must have been crazy.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: But that's really what I take away from last night.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: You're talking – we sit there and talk about Houston Texans
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: and all this historic defense that they had last season,
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: and this offense is going to be historic for Buffalo right now.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Complete – Complete no answers.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: No answers anywhere.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: So all that stuff I'm talking about there, defense, okay, everybody has flaws on a team.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: The credit to the Bills front office goes to what you found gold in a franchise quarterback.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: You hit on a possibly one of the top two or three running backs in the NFL,
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: and they drafted him in the second round,
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: and we know he has a flaw with fumbling,
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: but when he doesn't do it, he's as good as you could want.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: And a tight end that is a game plan guy, a guy that is going to be game plan for.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: You drafted correctly on him.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: So you have crazy quarterback with Cook and Kincaid as two home run hits
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: and another free agent,
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: solid signing,
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: DJ Moore, who is,
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: when you look up definition of professional veteran receiver,
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: it's everything you want on this team right now.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: That is a job well done.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: You can shake up the offensive line and replace jerseys.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: I'm just going to say it.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: When you put this team out there right now, this is a job well done.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Hey, Deion Dawkins did pretty good on Aiden Hutchinson, too.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: Great job.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: He can still move.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: He's been playing forever.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I'm exaggerating.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: There's always one,
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: I always say,
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: one lineman that's talented and then just give me four guys are going to fight.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: I thought you were going to...
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Change a rule that we have on this podcast for a second there, Jim.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Is it time?
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: We can do it.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Is it time?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Here's why it's time.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Keon Coleman, when asked and called upon, made the play, made the catches.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day,
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: it's 10 yards a catch, and I think you're looking for more, but It was third downs.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: It was pretty – you know, it was – the moments were big.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: So good for Keon.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Hey, any time you can get – just that's all you have to do.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: That was my point with Keon Coleman.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: That might be what he is, which is good.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: He just didn't need to draft him that high.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: But I don't even like talking about that because that's what you do right now.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: You fit in.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Like this is historic offense right now.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: I don't – you just took two – well, Detroit's bad on defense.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: But, I mean, they pretty much did this to Houston too, so –
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: They are bad on defense, but they're missing Kirby Joseph.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: They're missing Brian Branch, but they paid Jack Campbell a lot of money, middle linebacker.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: They paid Aleem McNeil a lot of money at D-Tackle.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: They paid Aiden Hutchinson premium dollar, obviously, at the edge.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: They drafted Tyleek Williams in the first round, who said himself that the Bills wanted him.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: They've invested draft capital.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: They've invested money.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: And I don't think it was a surprise as I'm walking through the bowels
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: of New Highmark Stadium from like the field area.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: You can see the end of the game from a tunnel and then walking toward like
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: the Bills locker room and interview area.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: I walked out by the Detroit Lions GM, Brad Holmes, and all the coaches.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: And man,
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Brad Holmes had a look on his face where if I would have just looked at him funny,
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: he might have just cold cocked me right between the eyes.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: He was pissed.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: And as he should be, I mean,
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: like I said,
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: they've been putting a lot of resources into this defense and new coordinators.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Calvin Shepard, I mean, he blitzed more than he has in any game as defensive coordinator.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: I think like 55%.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Connor McGovern said, yes,
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Austin Gunn and their coaches,
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: they prepared him a ton for pass,
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: but there was also a lot of stuff they hadn't seen.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: And he's solving problems on the fly with Josh Allen.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: So it had to have been demoralizing because They couldn't get off the field.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're huffing and puffing for wind, doing whatever they can.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: You bring up Dalton Kincaid, that's the X factor.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: We haven't seen him healthy.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: It's just been one thing after another.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: I remember speaking to him at length out of the fourth and five play,
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: the Chiefs loss,
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: and the effect that that had on him mentally, physically, all the above.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: He just seems like he is in a very good place.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: He is Like,
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: holy hell,
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: I'm finally healthy and the world can see what I can do as
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: an athletic tight end that's a matchup problem.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: You can block a little bit,
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: but you got Jackson Hawes, you got Dawson Knox, these two, three tight end sets.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: He gets lost in the sauce repeatedly.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: No tight end in the last six years has had this many yards through two games.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Small sample size, but I think I saw that.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: George Kittle in 2020.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: They're using them finally, as they should.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: No, it's what great teams do.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: First half, get your lead, and that's the next part for the Bills.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Just take that next step, clamp the lead.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Let them run the ball in the fourth quarter.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Let Gore run it if you don't think Cook can hold on to the ball in the fourth quarter.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: But you don't want Cook to have to make plays in the fourth quarter to win the game.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: You want the fourth quarter to be about running the ball,
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: whoever you have confidence in holding on to the ball.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: That's what's going to happen with this team.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: They are always going to have the lead in the first half.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Talking to James Cook after these games is just hilarious.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: He wants nothing to do with any of us.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: It's amazing.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's Marshawn Lynch.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: And he's not a bad guy.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: He's not doing it with a mean spirit whatsoever.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: All he wants to do is run the football, score touchdowns, Move on to the next.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: I should find the interaction I had with him.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: I think I got it here somewhere.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Just give me a minute.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: Tyler, I'll just tell this story quick while you're looking.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: It made me think of when I was an intern for the Philadelphia Eagles as
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: a public relations intern.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: So I'm still in college at Bloomsburg University.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: And one of my assignments was to get Brian Dawkins,
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: go to his locker,
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: And we had to get in the elevator to go up to like whatever the floor was at
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: the old veteran stadium.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: This is 1999.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Long story short of that is it's an absolute pain in the ass for the player.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: He did not want to do it.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: So guess who gets to go ask that player, the intern.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: So you want to talk about somebody looking at you and like,
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: he doesn't want to talk to you or wants nothing to do with you.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: You know how you try to make small talk.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: We get into that elevator to go up to the,
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: I remember, like,
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: I can remember, like,
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: it was yesterday,
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: go up to the third floor,
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: and I said something corny, like, all PR, like,
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: we were all just,
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: you know, I'm just, like, I'm trying my best to maybe just break the ice.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: He looked at me, like,
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: basically, like, he, like,
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: if you could press a button on,
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: you know, an Uber, you say, I don't need you to talk.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: That's what Dawkins were.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: He just was, like, looking at me like, nah, man.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Like, you can stop talking.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: That's kind of how it was with James.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to bore people with the very brief back and forth.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: But yes, he is in Orchard Park, New York to play football.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: But thankfully,
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: there are a lot of players in that locker room that want to explain what happened on
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: the field for the fans.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's all we're doing is trying to articulate what you saw out there on
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: the field specifically.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: And I think it's a really good locker room.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: I think there's a lot of character in there.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: That was a point that Terry Pagula made in our sit-down.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: I should find that because the question was,
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: eventually we got around to this 2026 season and his hopes, his expectations.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, he said, like, you know, I hope that we're playing in February.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: You can't predict the future, but that's the goal.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: But...
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: When it comes to the Bills team and what makes them unique this season,
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: this edition, here's what Terry said.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Because remember, he's got a unique perspective with somebody that you know well.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: You made a place to wager on a time or two.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Jesse Pagula, the third-ranked tennis player in the world, is his daughter.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, she grows up in his home.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: So when I asked about the Bills this season,
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Terry said, I like to say that Jessie was my chemistry lab in life.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: I watched her since she was six years old,
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: and I wish she could be in every football player's house and watch them grow up
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: because I never saw Jessie one day say, do I have to do this?
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Do I have to do that?
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: It was always, are we late?
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Are we late?
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Are we going today?
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Am I practicing?
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Never one time did she complain about anything she had to do.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: I think we have a lot of guys like that in our locker room,
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: a lot of character, and that goes a long way.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: One of them is our quarterback.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: He's dedicated.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: It It's got to start there with Josh Allen.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, they've got the right makeup, it appears, Jim.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think I just lost you, Jim.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Where'd you go?
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Frozen in time.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, you know what?
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: His laptop died.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Just got the text message, everyone.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Laptop died.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: The nick of time, because that's going to do it for this first episode.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Postgame pod.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: We'll do these after all of the Bills games.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: We'll try to do them right after the game.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: If it's possible,
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: if it's not a primetime slot where,
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: driving back to the Southern tier and then writing a story the next morning.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: But thank you so much.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: As you know, Jim Monas, Philadelphia Eagle Scout, New Orleans St.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Scout, and was the director of personnel for the Buffalo Bills.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: May of 2013 came on as Doug Whaley's right-hand man and stuck around through You're
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: a Marone, Doug Marone, Rex Ryan.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: They hire Sean McDermott in 2017.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And then Sean McDermott brought in his own front office, Brandon Bean.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: And since then,
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Jim Onis has been in the UFL finding personnel for
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: a league that's doing incredibly well.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: So it is an honor and a privilege to have his incredible football mind.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: as I was leaving the stadium yesterday,
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Late last night,
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I was actually walking out with Nick Veronica,
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: who does great work here locally, all over the place, and we were talking about Jim.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: I said, I wish there was a tally of takes,
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: and we could see who was right and who was wrong over time,
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: because Jim Moniz's track record,
