Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And I want to give a brief
- 0:19apology for the audio on yesterday's episode because I
- 0:26had forgotten to turn on the mic setting on my video recording
- 0:33thing. I'm super fancy, so I use
- 0:35QuickTime Player. For those of you that don't
- 0:37know, that's just the default media player on on Macs.
- 0:45So I was using QuickTime to record, but I forgot to have it
- 0:49specify that it needed to draw the audio from my microphone.
- 0:53That's actually right in front of me.
- 0:54So it was drawing audio from my phone.
- 0:56So thank you to everyone that listened through.
- 1:01I'm, I'm sure that maybe some people didn't notice, but
- 1:03especially if you're listening to the audio version of the
- 1:05podcast you did. So I promise I will take greater
- 1:09care to make sure that does not happen again.
- 1:12We are in Isaiah chapter 10 today, beginning at verse #5.
- 1:17We may go to the end of the chapter.
- 1:19We'll, we'll see where we arrive.
- 1:21The prophet Isaiah is in the southern Kingdom of Judah with
- 1:26Jerusalem as its capital. He is prophesying against
- 1:30declaring God's judgment against the nations around Judah.
- 1:36At this point is kind of the section that we are in.
- 1:40And last episode we heard about God's judgment against the
- 1:45northern Kingdom of Israel with Samaria as its capital.
- 1:50So there was going to come judgement and it was going to
- 1:53come from the nation of Assyria. Now Assyria was also very
- 2:00wicked. And so like we heard many, many,
- 2:03many months ago, I think it was December of 2024, from the book
- 2:09of Habakkuk, God does not allow evil to go unpunished.
- 2:17And sometimes he might punish evil in one place or in one
- 2:21people group by having another wicked nation bring that group
- 2:28to justice or to, if you will, eradicate that particular
- 2:33society that way in which they were living, that now they are
- 2:37assimilated into this new nation.
- 2:40But no nation that will ever encounter is perfect.
- 2:45And so every nation is one day getting for judgment day.
- 2:49And that was true even here of Assyria.
- 2:51So though God would use Assyria to punish Israel, Assyria
- 2:57themselves would need to be punished for their wickedness.
- 3:01And so that's what we're going to hear about today is Isaiah's
- 3:04prophecy against the nation of Assyria.
- 3:08Verse #5 of Isaiah 10. Woe to Assyria, the rod of my
- 3:13anger. The staff in their hands is my
- 3:17wrath. So you're just starting off.
- 3:21God says I am using them, but it is for a specific purpose.
- 3:26God can use even human evil to accomplish ultimate good.
- 3:31So he says would to Assyria. The rod of my anger, the staff
- 3:35in their hands is my wrath. That is, they are not acting
- 3:39independently of God. Some people could wonder, OK,
- 3:43this is Israel, the people of God, the name itself.
- 3:47Israel is the name that God gave to Jacob after he wrestled with
- 3:52him at Peniel. And so it's like Prince with God
- 3:56is the name, and so is Yahweh no longer in charge.
- 4:02And that's why Assyria was able to conquer Israel.
- 4:05No, God says Assyria is accomplishing my will.
- 4:09Verse number six. He says I will send him against
- 4:12a godless nation that is Israel. He says I will command him to go
- 4:17against a people destined for my rage, to take spoils, to plunder
- 4:22and to trample them down like clay in the streets.
- 4:26But this is not what he plans. It is sorry, this is not what he
- 4:31intends. This is not what he plans.
- 4:33It is his intent to destroy and to cut off many nations.
- 4:37For he says, and this is if you will, the the king, the the king
- 4:42of Assyria, the one that would be in charge ultimately of what
- 4:47the military is doing. God has Israel set out for what
- 4:52Assyria is going to destroy. But the king of Assyria would
- 4:56want more verse #8 He says, aren't all my commanders kings?
- 5:01Isn't Kalno like Carcamesh? Isn't Hamas like Arpad?
- 5:05Isn't Samaria like Damascus? These are all these places,
- 5:09capital cities all around the ancient Near East, ancient
- 5:15Middle East. And so he says, I've destroyed
- 5:18all of these places and there's no difference between any of
- 5:24them. It doesn't matter what kind of
- 5:26tribal gods a place has. We're Assyria, we are bigger, we
- 5:30are batter, we're better in every way.
- 5:33Verse #10 Is is My hand sees the kingdoms of worthless images,
- 5:38kingdoms whose idols exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria.
- 5:42And as I did to Samaria and it's worthless images, will I not
- 5:47also do to Jerusalem and its idols?
- 5:50So here the king of Assyria wants to destroy the southern
- 5:53Kingdom of Judah as well. This is not what God is going to
- 5:57have occur. Verse #12 But when the Lord
- 5:59finishes all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he
- 6:04will say, I will punish the king of Assyria for his arrogant acts
- 6:09and the proud look in his eyes. For he said, I have done this by
- 6:14my own strength and wisdom, for I am clever.
- 6:17I abolished the borders of nations and plundered their
- 6:20treasures. Like a mighty warrior.
- 6:22I subjugated the inhabitants. My hand is reached out as if
- 6:26into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations.
- 6:29Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole
- 6:33earth. No wing fluttered, no beak
- 6:36opened or chirped. So here the king of Assyria
- 6:39thinks I have robbed the gods of all of these nations that
- 6:46Assyria has invaded and destroyed, subjugated and taxed.
- 6:51So he says that there's going to be no difference here for Judah,
- 6:54but God is going to make a difference.
- 6:58Verse #15 Does an axe exalt itself above the one who chops
- 7:04with it? So you guys know what is better,
- 7:08the you know, the microphone or the person that remembers to
- 7:11turn on the microphone? Who is greater with the
- 7:15microphone? Say man, I am so amazing, I'm so
- 7:18great. We we would all say no.
- 7:20The one that is utilizing a tool is far in a way greater than the
- 7:26one than the tool itself. Without the person swinging the
- 7:33axe, the axe would do absolutely nothing.
- 7:36So here Isaiah is saying, King of Assyria, the only reason that
- 7:39you can do anything is because God for a limited time has had
- 7:45you accomplished some of these things he says.
- 7:48Does a saw magnify itself above the one who saws with it?
- 7:52It would be like a rod waving the ones who lift it.
- 7:55It would be like a staff lifting the one who isn't wood.
- 8:00The microphone doesn't use me, I use the microphone.
- 8:04Therefore, verse 16 Yahweh out an eye of heaven's armies will
- 8:10inflict an emaciating disease on the well fed of Assyria, and he
- 8:15will kindle a burning fire under its glory.
- 8:19Israel's light will become a fire and it's holy 1A flame.
- 8:23In one day it will burn and consume a serious thorns and
- 8:27thistles. He will completely destroy the
- 8:29glory of its forests and orchards.
- 8:32As a sickness consumes a person. The remaining trees of its
- 8:36forest will be so few in number that a child could count them.
- 8:41Here there is this promise of God that he says just as
- 8:44judgment is coming against the northern Kingdom of Israel, God
- 8:49is going to bring judgment against Assyria.
- 8:51Now one thing that will show up over and over again in a in
- 8:57Isaiah is that God's judgement will come on all the nations.
- 9:03And it doesn't matter who it is, they will experience the
- 9:06judgement of God. But God's judgement, like when
- 9:10you think about, you know, here the, the burning fire that comes
- 9:14from God, most of us think of something like hell, that fire
- 9:20that never goes out. However, when the prophets talk
- 9:24about the fire of God, it's something that goes through it
- 9:27purges, it purges out evil, but something better is on the other
- 9:32end, something that is part of God's plan.
- 9:35So if you don't listen to the Bible Talk podcast put on by 9
- 9:42Marks and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, strongly
- 9:45encourage you to listen to that. That's been a great help even as
- 9:49I've been learning the Bible over the past several years.
- 9:53And one of the things that the some of the professors there
- 9:57have highlighted is that theme of Isaiah is transformation or
- 10:03God's glory through judgment. That wickedness is there.
- 10:07God brings his judgment so that then after the judgment there
- 10:12can be what is good in the world.
- 10:14You can think of even in the story of Noah, that you have all
- 10:18of this pervasive wickedness all across the earth.
- 10:22The flood happens, and then after that God makes a covenant.
- 10:26There is sacrifice. There are people that know and
- 10:30follow and worship God. And so in a much greater way,
- 10:34that's what God highlights throughout Isaiah is, yes, Judah
- 10:38is going to be punished, but the end result is what we read in
- 10:42Isaiah 2, the new Jerusalem, the Jerusalem with the Messiah, with
- 10:47God himself at the helm of Judah.
- 10:52And so that's when you read through the things about the
- 10:55fire that comes through. Yes, God will bring judgment,
- 10:59but the the plan of God is after judgment comes this
- 11:04transformation comes something new and better.
- 11:09Verse #20 On that day, the day of the judgement of Assyria, the
- 11:13remnant of Israel and the survivors of the House of Jacob
- 11:17will no longer depend on the one who struck them, but they will
- 11:20faithfully depend on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.
- 11:24The remnant will return the remnant of Jacob to the mighty
- 11:28God. If you remember, Mighty God is
- 11:30that title of the Messiah that we read in Isaiah 9.
- 11:34Israel. If even if your people were as
- 11:37numerous as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will
- 11:41return. Destruction has been decreed.
- 11:44Justice overflows for throughout the land.
- 11:47Yahweh Adonai of Heaven's armies is carrying out a destruction
- 11:52that was decreed. Therefore, Yahweh Adonai of
- 11:56Heaven's armies says this. My people who dwell in Zion do
- 12:01not fear Assyria, though. They strike you with a rod and
- 12:05raise their staff over you as the Egyptians did.
- 12:08That's, you know, the slavery that is there.
- 12:11There is subjugation that Assyria puts on Judah for a
- 12:15little bit, he says. In just a little while, my wrath
- 12:18will be spent, and my anger will turn to their destruction.
- 12:22And Yahweh of Heaven's armies will brandish a whip against
- 12:25him, as he did when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb, and
- 12:29he will raise his staff over the sea as he did in Egypt.
- 12:33So here, bringing to mind the stories of the Exodus and when
- 12:36God delivered Israel from the attack by Midian, and when God
- 12:41parted the Red Sea as Moses lifted his staff.
- 12:45God says I'm going to make a way of deliverance for you, Judah.
- 12:51Verse #27 On that day his burden will fall from your shoulders
- 12:56and his yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because
- 12:59your neck will be too large. There will be great strength
- 13:03that is there that they will not be able to be subjugated any
- 13:08longer. Verse #28 Assyria has come to
- 13:10IAF and has gone through Migron, storing their equipment at
- 13:15Mickmash. They crossed over at the
- 13:18forward, saying, We will spend the night at Giba.
- 13:21The people of Rama are trembling.
- 13:23Those at Gibia of Saul have fled.
- 13:26Cry aloud, daughter of Galim. Listen.
- 13:28Elisha Anathoth is miserable. Mad MENA has fled.
- 13:34The inhabitants of Gabim have sought refuge.
- 13:37Today the Assyrians will stand at Knob shaking their fists at
- 13:41the mountain of Daughter Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
- 13:45Look Yahweh out. An eye of heaven's armies will
- 13:48chop off the branches with terrifying power, and the tall
- 13:51trees will be cut down, the high trees felled.
- 13:55He is clearing the thickets of the forest with an axe and
- 13:58Lebanon with its majesty will fall here.
- 14:03It kind of goes back into the prophetic judgment against
- 14:08Israel, That northern Kingdom there at the end that God says
- 14:13yes, I'm going to judge Assyria. It will be good on that day that
- 14:18I judge Assyria for the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 14:20But northern Kingdom of Israel, due to your wickedness, there
- 14:25are consequences. And so they're being described.
- 14:28Are several of the places there in the northern portion of
- 14:32Israel, one of those 10 northern tribes, Saul there from the
- 14:38tribe of Ephraim or sorry, Saul from the tribe of Benjamin that
- 14:43is there. When you read through these
- 14:47portions of Scripture, we got to remember a couple things.
- 14:49Number one, God is holy and just and there is right and good
- 14:54consequences and punishment for sin.
- 14:57For every person that was taken advantage of, defrauded, killed,
- 15:04abused in a variety of ways, God saw and God would bring
- 15:10punishment. So you can always know when
- 15:13others have done you wrong in your life.
- 15:15You can count on the justice of God.
- 15:18We read that in Romans 12. Leave vengeance to the Lord
- 15:22because He is just and He will bring a right response to human
- 15:27evil. So that's that's one part.
- 15:31Another is refuse sin, like reject it.
- 15:35It will always lead to the destruction and ruin of your
- 15:38soul and of every relationship that you have.
- 15:43You may think through being selfish or being proud or lying
- 15:50to someone or cheating, kind of getting ahead a little bit in
- 15:54this area or that area. You may think that it will lead
- 15:58to your flourishing, but it will not.
- 16:01So reject evil and instead pursue the way of the Lord.
- 16:05It is the way that leads to life.
- 16:08And when the nations and when evil doers all across our world,
- 16:13when they experience the judgment of God, those that have
- 16:16instead turned their lives over to Jesus, that he is their Lord
- 16:19and their Savior and they and we follow his way, we will
- 16:23experience life because following Jesus is that only
- 16:28path to life. So follow Christ, know that God
- 16:33will judge evil. Don't love sin.
- 16:36And man, what a joy. Even as we think about this, our
- 16:40ultimate hope now as Christians is not in the nation that we
- 16:44find ourselves in. I know we have listeners and
- 16:47watchers from a couple different countries.
- 16:50So if you're in the US, if you're in Canada, if you're in
- 16:53India, know that the Lord does not.
- 16:59Your primary concern is not the sustaining of your particular
- 17:03nation because you have been made into a new holy nation.
- 17:08As we read in First Peter Two, that is the church.
- 17:13And so now instead of us trying to maintain a physical nation,
- 17:18God says you are a nation wherever you find yourselves.
- 17:22And so may we be a godly nation, a godly people of Jesus, even as
- 17:29we think about the way that we treat one another, what we do
- 17:33with our finances, the words that we use in relation to one
- 17:36another, and how we care and love each other.
- 17:40Those ought to be the pursuits of our life.
- 17:42And may we do so in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 17:45And it is only through him that we can experience the good life,
- 17:49that we can be that remnant, that we can follow the way of
- 17:52God. It is only through what Jesus is
- 17:55doing, through the Holy Spirit in US.
- 17:57There's no good in US. There is all good in God.
- 18:00But as God has placed himself and his presence into our life,
- 18:04we can experience the good life that Jesus has for us, even in
- 18:09the middle of a world that is barreling towards judgment.
- 18:13Thanks for tuning in today. Hope you have a wonderful day.
