- 0:00It is so easy to be a victim.
- 0:03It is so easy to look around your life and go, "It's not fair.
- 0:06I can't believe that I have to deal with this.
- 0:08I'm so unlucky.
- 0:10My life is so hard."
- 0:12Guess what, guys?
- 0:14Everyone's life is hard, every persons on Earth.
- 0:19So you can focus on the hard, or you can focus on your power to improve your life in all areas.
- 0:25It is all in your head.
- 0:27Do not let yourself fall prey to a victim mentality.
- 0:30It will plague every aspect of your life.
- 0:33So instead of saying, "Why me?"
- 0:36Or, "Why can't I figure this out?"
- 0:37you say, "What can I do about this?
- 0:40What is in my power?"
- 0:45If you're a Latter-day Saint or another woman of faith feeling called to build a business, welcome.
- 0:49I'm Bonnie Wiscombe, and each week we'll combine faith and practical business strategy to help you answer that calling with confidence.
- 0:55This is Burning Brightly.
- 1:00Very often when people struggle in their business, it's because they focus on themselves.
- 1:05They focus on how hard it is or how much it's taking away from their time or their family, and they feel frustrated that things aren't working And feel maybe almost like everything's up against them.
- 1:13So often I remind my clients to think about the people they're helping, to have a service mindset and to focus on others instead of themselves.
- 1:21However, today I wanna talk specifically about what your business gives you.
- 1:25Because if a business only takes from you and never gives, it might not be worth continuing to do, even if it helps all the people in the world.
- 1:31It still has to bless you.
- 1:32Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who's also a coach, and she had taken a little time off of her business, and she said what was fascinating was she started to notice how some of the skills she
- 1:41had been developing in her business started to go away a little bit.
- 1:45She said she had developed confidence and the ability to talk easily and fluently about the things in her business and other topics as well.
- 1:51And she started to notice that those skills were diminishing because she spent less time on her business.
- 1:55And I thought this was so fascinating because I personally have seen so many talents and skills developed thanks to my many businesses over the years, but I hadn't thought about them honestly in a while, and her remark reminded
- 2:05me just how much God is waiting to bless us inside of our business.
- 2:09Many times I think that God is inspiring me to build a business, but instead what I think He is doing is using the business to build me.
- 2:18He wants us all to develop and to grow and to expand ourselves, and one of the best ways to do this is by building a business.
- 2:25Today I've got 10 ways that I've seen my business develop skills and talents and abilities in me, and also in my clients and friends.
- 2:33Number one, confidence.
- 2:35I would say this is probably the top skill or talent that I have developed in my business is confidence, and not just in my business.
- 2:42Overall, I become confident because I constantly do things that scare me all the time, almost daily, but definitely weekly.
- 2:51I talk about what I do.
- 2:52I tell people what I'm building.
- 2:54I sell.
- 2:55I get on people's podcasts or videos.
- 2:57I show up on social media.
- 2:58I teach things, often things that I just make up.
- 3:01It's not like I'm reading them out of a book and sharing somebody else's knowledge.
- 3:04This is just crap that comes out of my head, and I'm sharing it with people, and I have the confidence that it's gonna bless their lives.
- 3:10I make decisions all the time without knowing what will happen and if it will be a good result or a bad result.
- 3:15I handle things going wrong all the time.
- 3:17I'm like, "Oh, well, that broke.
- 3:18That's fantastic."
- 3:20And I am constantly telling myself, "I can figure this one out."
- 3:23Again, this was one of the main things my friend noticed when she stopped working on her business is that her confidence diminished because she wasn't constantly practicing it.
- 3:30It's just like a muscle.
- 3:31Most of these skills are just like muscles.
- 3:33If we don't use them, we lose them.
- 3:35And building a business is one of the best ways I know to develop confidence.
- 3:40Your business gives you 1,001 opportunities to exercise it every single day.
- 3:44So if you want more confidence, build a business.
- 3:47Number two, resilience.
- 3:49Resilience means you have a knowledge that failure isn't fatal.
- 3:53You are not going to die because something got screwed up.
- 3:56And entrepreneurship gives you so many opportunities to fail.
- 4:01This might not sound like a good thing, but I promise you it is because failure abounds around us in every aspect of life.
- 4:07And sometimes I hate using the word failure because it sounds so morose.
- 4:11Really, what I mean is things didn't turn out as expected.
- 4:14How often do things not turn out as expected for you in your life?
- 4:18Daily?
- 4:18Hourly?
- 4:19All the time.
- 4:20That's part of living on Earth.
- 4:23And when we practice this over and over and over, we get so much better at it in real life.
- 4:27I've had my kids go through really hard things and make choices that I didn't expect, and then they reaped results that they didn't expect.
- 4:34And I have become so much cooler and calmer and more loving watching them go through these experiences because of the resilience I've built in my business.
- 4:42Here are just a few examples of ways where we experience failure or things going unexpectedly in our business.
- 4:49We put out an offer, doesn't sell.
- 4:51We launch something, it flops.
- 4:54We put out an ad, it doesn't, quote-unquote, work, although I would say it's always working.
- 4:58We're just getting information, right?
- 5:00Some sort of technology breaks.
- 5:01Someone says no.
- 5:03You make a decision that turns out to be the wrong decision or a decision that didn't yield the results you wanted.
- 5:08And do you see how I'm constantly tweaking my verbiage around failure?
- 5:10Instead of saying something flops or it fails or it's wrong, I just say it didn't turn out as expected.
- 5:16Remember, Building a business is not like following turn-by-turn GPS navigation.
- 5:20It is a science experiment every single day.
- 5:24We're trying something, figuring out what worked, what didn't, figuring out what gave us the results and, that we wanted and what didn't give us the results we wanted, and tweaking and trying again.
- 5:33And eventually, when you do this enough, you just think, oh, I did that thing, it didn't work out, and I'm still here.
- 5:38I didn't die."
- 5:39Right?
- 5:39When my brain starts to be dramatic, I say, "Okay, but did you die?
- 5:42No.
- 5:43It's all gonna be okay, even if you felt embarrassed or dumb Or like it should have been better.
- 5:47Okay, it's fine.
- 5:48It's all gonna be fine.
- 5:50I start to think, "All right, that didn't work.
- 5:52What are we gonna try next?"
- 5:53And it becomes this exciting path of searching for the next opportunity, the next experiment, rather than focusing on the failure.
- 6:00This is a huge transformation for any one of us, and I promise you it will bless every aspect of your life if you develop resilience in your business.
- 6:09Number three, resourcefulness.
- 6:11That means saying, "I can figure things out."
- 6:14This one has been huge for me as well.
- 6:16One of my biggest pet peeves is when clients or friends or family members come to me and say, "Oh, I don't know if I can do that.
- 6:21I'm not very tech-savvy."
- 6:22And I'm thinking, "I'm sorry, but you no longer have the option to not be tech-savvy in today's world."
- 6:27Okay?
- 6:28Just using your microwave is technology.
- 6:30Just turning on your car.
- 6:31If you have a push button start in your car, you are using a lot of technology And yeah, sure, you don't have to do much to push a button, But what I'm trying to say is now is not
- 6:40the time to entertain the thought that I'm not good at technology.
- 6:43It will curse you in every aspect of your life.
- 6:46Stop telling yourself that story.
- 6:48Start telling yourself, "I can figure anything out," because it's true.
- 6:53You can.
- 6:55But you decide way ahead of time whether or not that's something you're capable of.
- 7:00You don't have to know everything, but you have to trust yourself to be able to find the answer.
- 7:06All right?
- 7:06Here's a few examples in my business.
- 7:08I didn't know what a funnel was or how to set one up.
- 7:10I create a new funnel basically weekly now.
- 7:12I didn't know how to make a million different pieces of software work, and now I have used dozens of dozens, and I know how to hook them up and make them work together, and things break all the time,
- 7:22and I figure out how to fix them.
- 7:24And I'm not particularly smart, you guys.
- 7:26If you had told me in my twenties that I would be learning all these new software programs and figuring out how to build a business online, I'd have thought, "No, you must have me mistaken for someone else."
- 7:35But I figured it out because it's been important to me.
- 7:37And this doesn't just apply to technology either.
- 7:40When your offer isn't selling, you investigate it, and you figure out why.
- 7:44When you're not sure what to do next, you just take a step and learn.
- 7:47Did that feel like the right step?
- 7:48Did that get me the results I wanted, res-resourcefulness is so useful.
- 7:52It spills over into every area of your life, okay?
- 7:56Every area.
- 7:57If you're a mom, I can guarantee you you're already really resourceful.
- 8:01So use that confidence in making things work that you have in motherhood and let it spill over into your business if need be.
- 8:09And then the more you work on your business, the more resourceful you'll get in other areas of your life as well.
- 8:13Number four, taking responsibility instead of being a victim.
- 8:17This is probably my top three favorite skill that I've developed since becoming a coach and si-since learning about coaching, period.
- 8:24It is so easy to be a victim.
- 8:27It is so easy to look around your life and go, "It's not fair.
- 8:31I can't believe that I have to deal with this.
- 8:34I'm so unlucky.
- 8:36My life is so hard."
- 8:38Guess what, guys?
- 8:40Everyone's life is hard, every persons on Earth.
- 8:45I don't care if you are homeless or if you are a billionaire, everyone's life is hard.
- 8:51So you can focus on the hard, or you can focus on your power to improve your life in all areas.
- 8:58I have a friend who I'm very close with, I love her to death, and her life is one of the hardest lives I have ever seen up close and personal, and she has the best attitude of anyone I
- 9:07have ever met.
- 9:08She is close with God.
- 9:10She experiences hardship.
- 9:11They knock her down, and she gets right back up and keeps going.
- 9:14It is all in your head.
- 9:16Do not let yourself fall prey to a victim mentality.
- 9:19It will plague every aspect of your life.
- 9:22So instead of saying, "Why me?"
- 9:25or, "Why do bad things always happen to me?"
- 9:27or, "Why can't I figure this out?"
- 9:29you say, "What can I do about this?
- 9:31What is in my power?"
- 9:34So here are a few examples of things I hear, and sometimes combat myself in my brain, that lead us towards that victim mentality.
- 9:40The algorithm isn't working for me.
- 9:42I keep posting and posting, and the algorithm doesn't like me.
- 9:45Boo-hoo.
- 9:47It's because we're posting things that people don't wanna see.
- 9:49Okay?
- 9:50Nobody's buying.
- 9:51Woe is me.
- 9:52Well, no one's buying either because you're not getting in front of the right people, your messaging is off, or your offer is off.
- 9:58Okay?
- 9:59I don't have enough time.
- 10:00I hear this all the time, and you guys, I feel this pain.
- 10:03I do.
- 10:04I promise you.
- 10:05I don't have a lot of time either, but I have chosen to make time for my business, 'cause it's very, very important to me.
- 10:11So you just have to ask yourself what's important to you and where can you make changes.
- 10:16You might have to shuffle your priorities a little bit.
- 10:18That's okay.
- 10:19I believe in you.
- 10:21You have the power to make the changes you want in your life.
- 10:24Similarly, my family needs too much from me.
- 10:26Yes.
- 10:27I have a spoiler alert for you guys, especially the moms out there.
- 10:30Your family's needs are unending.
- 10:32Unending.
- 10:34Literally, there will never come a day where your seven-year-old will see you sitting on the couch and go, "No, I'm good, Mom, I don't need anything from you."
- 10:40No.
- 10:41Small children especially will always need their mom.
- 10:44"Mom, open this jar for me.
- 10:45Mom, help me find my shorts.
- 10:47Mom, help me clean my room.
- 10:48Mom, I need a snack.
- 10:49Mom, take me to my friend's house."
- 10:51So if you don't tell your children that you're otherwise occupied with a business that God inspired you to build, they will never actively make time for your business.
- 11:00That's your job, not your family's.
- 11:02Okay?
- 11:02I'm giving you guys a little bit of a tough love here because the victim mentality is so pernicious, and I don't want anyone to fall prey to it.
- 11:10You have the power to change your life, to look however you want it to look.
- 11:15Lastly, someone else isn't doing what they're supposed to do.
- 11:17We see this in family life all the time, right?
- 11:19"Well, I couldn't get to that because my kid didn't do his dishes when he was supposed to," or, "My husband didn't take the laundry down," or blah, blah, blah.
- 11:25Right?
- 11:25We can blame, blame, blame and be victims all day long or we can just say, "Well, I want this thing done, so I'm gonna do it."
- 11:31We are really good at that as moms because spoiler alert, the kids never do the chores when they're supposed to, and people make mistakes just like we do, but we have the power to change our lives in ways
- 11:40that make us happier and more satisfied.
- 11:43The minute you start taking responsibility for your own agency is the minute your life changes for the better.
- 11:49You have choices no matter what your life looks like, and that is why God gave you agency, because he trusts you to make choices to improve your life and the lives of people around you.
- 11:58Again, this takes me back to what I tell my clients when they're kind of focused on themselves.
- 12:02How can you serve others with your business?
- 12:04Instead of going, "Oh, this isn't working for me, I can't figure it out," how can I help someone else with this?
- 12:08And that is one of the quickest ways to get out of a victim mentality.
- 12:12Number five, faith.
- 12:14Learning to trust God with the outcome of your business.
- 12:17Here's how it typically works for me when I make a choice in my business.
- 12:21I choose a path.
- 12:22I make the best decision I can.
- 12:23I do the work, and then I discover, oh, I actually am not in control of the outcome.
- 12:29So I learned this from a coach of mine a few years ago.
- 12:33And it, and it really changed how I make goals There's a difference between a dream that you don't have Full control over and a goal that you do.
- 12:42Okay?
- 12:42So for example, I have a dream to make a million dollars in my business, but my goal is to put out X amount of offers by the end of the year.
- 12:52Does that make sense?
- 12:53Can I control how many people join my membership?
- 12:55Not really.
- 12:56I can do everything I know how to get people to join my membership, but I can control how many offers I put out.
- 13:03So that doesn't mean you never dream or you never think, "I would love to get here," but just be aware that if there's an element to that dream that you are not fully in control of, it's not really
- 13:11a goal because you can't fully control it.
- 13:14So create a goal that you are fully c- in control of, and then leave the rest up to the Lord.
- 13:19And then when you try things and they don't work out the way you expected, you can say th- something like, "I thought that's what I was going to get or what I needed, and it turns out it wasn't."
- 13:27Let me give you an example.
- 13:29This last week, I had two new people join my studio membership, and when they came in, there were a couple of errors that kept popping up.
- 13:36I had recently restructured the software I use inside my studio, and for some reason, these women did not get immediate access to the content inside my studio, and they missed some important information, I was frustrated, and I thought,
- 13:47"Oh, shoot, I didn't know that that glitch was there.
- 13:49I need to go fix that."
- 13:50And I felt kind of embarrassed that they didn't get access to the information they needed immediately.
- 13:54And my very next thought was, "Thank goodness I didn't have 50 people join this week."
- 13:59Now, if you had asked me a month ago, "Would you like 50 people to join your membership in a week, or would you like two?"
- 14:04I would've chosen 50, except for guess what?
- 14:06I wasn't ready for 50.
- 14:08I was only ready for two, and even then, there were some glitches and things I needed to fix.
- 14:12Okay?
- 14:12So instead of looking at that and thinking, "Oh my gosh, this is terrible.
- 14:15Everything's breaking.
- 14:16Why isn't my business working?"
- 14:17I saw it as what a tender mercy that God sent me two people to work out some of these glitches before He sends me 50, because I know those are coming as well.
- 14:26I have exactly the amount of growth that I'm supposed to be handling right now, and that becomes such a blessing instead of a curse.
- 14:33Number six, discernment This is where we learn the difference between the right decisions and just wanting to do more.
- 14:40Early on in our businesses, often we are taught that more equals success.
- 14:44We want more clients, more followers, more money, more launches, more members.
- 14:48But experience has taught me that sometimes the things that I think I want would be a disaster.
- 14:55This ties right back into the faith step, What if we could know that everything that's coming to us is exactly what's supposed to be coming to us?
- 15:03then we start to look at choices with discernment.
- 15:06We start to ask ourself, "Do I really need more right now, or do I really just need the right step?"
- 15:11So anytime you're tempted to add something to your business, add a piece of complexity, a piece of software, a piece of content, especially if it's something that you're committing to regularly, maybe like an article you wanna write every
- 15:21week or a podcast you wanna do all the time, ask yourself, "Is this the right step, or am I just tempted to do more, more, more?"
- 15:28And this is where prayer comes in really, really handy.
- 15:31Ask God, "This is something that's on my heart right now.
- 15:33I'm thinking about starting a YouTube channel.
- 15:35I'm thinking about adding this offer, but I don't wanna complicate my life, and I don't wanna make things harder.
- 15:40I just wanna take the right step.
- 15:41Is this the right step?
- 15:42Is this what I actually need right now?"
- 15:44That's a very, very mature step.
- 15:47And you might get to a place in your business where you're like, "This is enough.
- 15:50I thought maybe I wanted a six-figure business, but this is actually great right where I am.
- 15:54I'm working the amount of hours I want.
- 15:56I'm getting the income I want.
- 15:57I feel fantastic."
- 15:59So don't get tempted by more, more, more Especially if God is telling you to slow down.
- 16:04Number seven, communication.
- 16:06Learning to speak and think clearly.
- 16:09This is so valuable.
- 16:11So valuable.
- 16:13When you build a business, you have to put your thoughts into words.
- 16:16You have to be a good communicator.
- 16:17And you guys, lately, I don't know if this phase of life or whatever, words escape me all the time.
- 16:21I feel so stupid.
- 16:22I used to have a really great vocabulary, and now I feel like I'm missing words all the time.
- 16:26But I practice every day talking about what I do, articulating problems and solutions, teaching things, telling stories, explaining why things matter, putting things that are really important to me in my mind and heart into words that can communicate
- 16:39to someone else.
- 16:41And the more you do it, the better you get at it.
- 16:44And thoughts come to me that I think are really inspired, and things that I didn't come up with.
- 16:49It's a skill to tap into what the Spirit is trying to teach you, to communicate it in words, and to express things in a way that your audience and your clients will understand.
- 16:58Becoming a better communicator makes you a better mom, a better teacher, a better wife, mother, friend, leader in your community.
- 17:04It helps every aspect of your life.
- 17:07Number eight, courage.
- 17:09You guys knew this one was coming, right?
- 17:11Being willing to be seen is hard.
- 17:15It is.
- 17:15Now, is that a story?
- 17:16Of course it is.
- 17:17But it's a story that most of us believe because it requires courage.
- 17:21There is a difference between having an idea and being willing to put that idea out to the world so that people can judge it and tell you they don't like it.
- 17:28That requires courage.
- 17:30Business requires that you be seen in some capacity or another.
- 17:33Maybe it's social media, maybe it's through a book or a podcast or something else.
- 17:37But the more you allow yourself to be seen, the less you become afraid of what people think.
- 17:43You stop thinking, "What if they think I'm stupid?
- 17:45What if they don't like me?
- 17:46What if they make comments I don't like?"
- 17:48Bring it.
- 17:49Let them bring the comments, because I am proud of the work I'm doing, and I'm proud of the things I'm teaching and the people I'm helping, and it doesn't matter to me.
- 17:56It truly does not matter to me what people think about what I'm putting out into the world anymore.
- 18:00That was not always the case.
- 18:01There were many years that I cared a lot about what people about me and my content, and eventually, most of that goes away.
- 18:09Because here's the truth, most of the time someone's gonna have an opinion about what you have to say or what your hair looks like or whether or not you chose to put on mascara that day.
- 18:17And it is fully in our power to just let them, let them think and feel and say whatever they need to say.
- 18:23That's all about them, And we survive, and we keep moving forward, and eventually we learn to care less.
- 18:29Number nine, patience.
- 18:31Learning that meaningful things take time to build.
- 18:35I love the analogy of raising children or growing a garden as it applies to your business.
- 18:40You don't plant basil today and use it tomorrow.
- 18:43You don't have a baby today and ask it to pay rent tomorrow.
- 18:48These things take time.
- 18:49They grow and mature at a very slow rate.
- 18:53They don't produce results immediately, and your business does not either.
- 18:56You create content that nobody sees, and it feels useless.
- 19:00You build relationships that don't turn into clients, sometimes not for months or years, and sometimes never.
- 19:05You learn skills that don't pay off right away, and sometimes it looks like one step forward and two steps back.
- 19:10But then you begin to understand that growth is happening long before you see evidence of it.
- 19:16What if every time you went out into your garden after planting something, you didn't see sprouts, you just tore up the dirt again?
- 19:23This is what happens sometimes when people don't see evidence of success, so they restart their business, or they change their niche, or they decide to jump ship and try something completely new.
- 19:32Well, you're never gonna see evidence if you keep digging up the dirt.
- 19:35Just be patient.
- 19:36Keep watering it.
- 19:38Keep making sure it gets sunshine.
- 19:40Keep praying and asking for patience.
- 19:42It will come, I promise you.
- 19:44What you're building will come.
- 19:46And then finally, number 10, as we build our business, we are given a bigger capacity to serve and to love.
- 19:53This is absolutely true.
- 19:55I think I've shared this story before, but I wanna share it again because this was really, really impactful to me.
- 20:00When I was writing my blog, I loved to write about motherhood, and when I learned about coaching, it really changed my life and I thought, "Maybe I'll become a coach."
- 20:07And so I decided to try an experiment.
- 20:09I decided to offer some coaching to some of the moms on my blog.
- 20:13So I wrote a post and I said, "Hey, I'm gonna doing something new.
- 20:15It's gonna be really cheap.
- 20:16Does anybody want to get on some coaching calls with me for whatever, a small amount of money."
- 20:20And quite a few people signed up, and so we did a few coaching calls.
- 20:24And at the end of each one of those coaching calls, I had a very, very distinct feeling and impression, and the feeling was that God loved these women that I was talking to.
- 20:35And this hit me out of nowhere.
- 20:37I did not expect to feel this feeling.
- 20:39I remember expecting to feel maybe proud of being able to help them or content.
- 20:44But no, I felt a very divine impression that God loved these women and that I could serve them and that through serving them as a coach, I could help them feel God's love.
- 20:54And that sealed the deal for me.
- 20:55I was gonna become a coach because I wanted to feel that again and again.
- 20:58Because not only did I wanna feel that over and over, but I wanted to make sure that these women felt God's love as well yes, of course your business will make you more confident and resilient and resourceful, but
- 21:08it's not so that you can feel better about yourself.
- 21:10It's so that you can become the person God wants you to be so you can help more people.
- 21:14You can become a better wife and a better mother.
- 21:17You can speak more confidently at church events.
- 21:19Your resilience means you can keep going even when you have really hard trials.
- 21:24Your communication skills will make you an incredible teacher in any aspect of life.
- 21:28Your increased faith will make sure that you keep moving forward even when you don't know the end from the beginning.
- 21:34And your courage will make sure that you put any message God gives you out there, whether it's your business or whether it's your testimony of Jesus The point of this development that happens through your business is that it
- 21:45makes you more capable of doing the work God has for you And this brings us full circle back to the beginning.
- 21:51Sometimes when we're struggling in our business, we look so hard at ourselves, "Do I have enough time?
- 21:56Am I good enough?
- 21:57Is this working?
- 21:58What if I fail?"
- 21:59That we forget there's another person on the other side of our business who needs what we have to offer, and that's the case for life in general.
- 22:06There will always be people around you that need what you have to offer, that need what God has to offer, and they might only get it through you.
- 22:13You are not just building a business.
- 22:15You are becoming the kind of woman who can run a business and most importantly, to serve the people who are waiting on the other side of it.
- 22:23I have so much confidence and faith in you, my friend.
- 22:26Keep going.
- 22:27There are amazing, miraculous things in store for you.
- 22:30Talk to you next week.
- 22:35If today's episode encouraged you, my book, Burning Brightly, is the next step to answering God's call to build a business through faith and confidence.
