Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Tabaki Rambles where a couple of
- 0:22friends review Korean dramas and for this episode we're going to
- 0:26be reviewing When Life Gives You Tangerines with not one but two
- 0:30guests. I am so happy to have on Carol
- 0:33from the K Drama Musings podcast and Lola from Lola pops off
- 0:38about K dramas. How are you guys?
- 0:40Hello. We're good.
- 0:43How are you? Good, I love to see your smiling
- 0:46faces. I have reviewed dramas with each
- 0:49of you individually and I basically crossed the podcast
- 0:53streams this time and I was like, hey, this is a kind of a
- 0:56big drama and I wanted to get more voices in on it because I
- 0:59truly felt, and this is 100% the truth, I felt really inadequate
- 1:05to judge the show and come and talk about it.
- 1:08Just me, myself, and I, I was like, I definitely need some
- 1:11more, some more people in on this.
- 1:13And I'm so glad that you guys were happy to finish watching
- 1:16the show #1 and then come prepared to talk intelligently
- 1:20about this show after it totally wrecked me.
- 1:23I last night, I'll tell you right now, last night I finished
- 1:27the show and the entirety of the last episode, I was crying from
- 1:33start to finish. And that never happens to me.
- 1:37From start to an hour and 20 minutes straight, I was crying.
- 1:42I was crying. I'm surprised that I'm upright
- 1:45today. You know, I had things on the
- 1:47docket that I needed to do before this recording.
- 1:50And I was telling you, I'm really scatterbrained today.
- 1:52And probably the lack of sleep, plus the fact that I was crying
- 1:54for an hour and a half before going to sleep did not help
- 1:57anything. Like there was no aftercare
- 2:00basically after the show. But I am really thrilled that
- 2:06we're finally here. This has been highly requested,
- 2:09I will say from me from Tabak before.
- 2:11Like, I can't wait for you to comment on when life gives you
- 2:13Tangerines. And I'm like, oh God, why?
- 2:19I feel so inadequate to do that. But we're going to try.
- 2:23We're going to try our best today.
- 2:24If you guys want to maybe introduce yourselves by saying
- 2:28what you've been watching lately, maybe just one drama
- 2:30that you would recommend to people based on, you know, your
- 2:33current watch list. Oh OK I'll go first.
- 2:36I am currently watching made in Korea and re watching it.
- 2:41Girl, I'm stuck there. So.
- 2:46So I do encourage everyone to watch it.
- 2:48It's really well done and I love it.
- 2:52I'm waiting for Season 2, yeah. Yeah, Made in Korea.
- 2:56I was just talking with you on your podcast about Made in
- 2:59Korea. We did a review and yeah, Carol,
- 3:02are you OK? Because I don't know how many,
- 3:06how many times have you watched it at this point?
- 3:08Made in Korea. Probably 7.
- 3:12Wow, Carol. I know.
- 3:14Oh. My God.
- 3:15But but it's cinematic. It's.
- 3:18It's. Fantastic.
- 3:19I agree. So Made in Korea, highly
- 3:21recommended. But for me and Carol, because
- 3:23I've just watched it this week and it's very good.
- 3:27Lola, what do you got? I'm going to go kind of left.
- 3:33I actually really have been enjoying a drama called to my
- 3:36Beloved thief. It's a Segu.
- 3:39Yeah, Nam Jihan and Boon Sangbin and I it's I don't know, it's
- 3:44just everything I I like in a drama.
- 3:46It has like a body switching aspect or element to it.
- 3:50Great chemistry from Leeds, the, you know, Segu, of course,
- 3:55Palace and all of that. A print to can't be a Prince,
- 3:59you know, that kind of thing. So I absolutely love it.
- 4:02Absolutely love it. It's pretty, I mean, simple.
- 4:05I think you've seen it before, you know, in other forms.
- 4:08Yeah. But I really am enjoying it.
- 4:10I'm really enjoying the performances I think the most.
- 4:13For sure. OK, I mean, I'm a simple gal and
- 4:16so I think that's why I really got a kick out.
- 4:18I have another great kid or a friend who actually was not in
- 4:21love with it, wasn't thrilled with it.
- 4:23So I know that it's not everyone's cup of tea by far
- 4:26like, so I'm not going to say you need to run out and watch
- 4:30it. Oh man.
- 4:32See, Carol, That's Carol. I mean, I've heard it already.
- 4:35I've heard it from folks already.
- 4:36But I am such a little fan of this drama.
- 4:38I don't know, I'm so simple, but made in Korea.
- 4:41I also enjoy it. So I mean, I could I go back and
- 4:44forth, but yeah, I do like to my beloved.
- 4:48All right, OK. Well, so the two shows are To My
- 4:52Beloved Thief and Made in Korea. Thank you guys for sharing some
- 4:55recommendations to the listeners.

- 5:43you guys so much for supporting the show.
- 5:46All right, so this show we're going to get started on the non
- 5:50spoiler section and then move into the spoiler section.
- 5:52I want to just temper expectations because this is not
- 5:54going to be a recap podcast at all.
- 5:57We could easily spend 16 hours on the show and cover each and
- 6:02every episode and talk about all of the finer details.
- 6:05And I don't think we're going to have the space to do that.
- 6:08This is going to be the entirety of the show, a lot to cover, and
- 6:12we're going to be a little more intentional and surgical about
- 6:17this review. OK so with that being said, the
- 6:21Wikipedia synopsis of this show is.
- 6:23The drama follows the adventurous life and many trials
- 6:26of Essen, a poor girl wanting to become a poet who was born in
- 6:29Teju in 1951, and Quanchik, a young man who cherishes and
- 6:34loves her. The drama is narrated by their
- 6:36daughter, Yang Gum Young. It aired in March 2025.
- 6:40S Happy birthday and life gives you Tangerines.
- 6:43It's basically a year old and I think it was told in four parts,
- 6:484 acts, 4 episodes a week for four weeks as I think what
- 6:53happened here? Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 6:56You know, you're absolutely right.
- 6:57It was 4 parts. OK, They broke it up.
- 6:59You're right. 16 episodes long and directed by Kim Wan Sok.
- 7:04Kim Wan Sok has directed a ton of things.
- 7:07He's a really great prolific director directing things like
- 7:11Cinderella, Sister Zunkin, Kwan, Scandal, Monstar from 2013,
- 7:16Methang, Incomplete Life, which won him best director and the
- 7:20entire show won the TE Song at the Pick Song Awards for that
- 7:23year. He's directed Signal from 2016
- 7:26that won the best drama award at the Pick Song Awards that year,
- 7:30directed My Mr. and Arth Doll Chronicles from 2019.
- 7:35I don't have a lot of good things to say about Arth Doll
- 7:38Chronicles, but it was a lot of spectacle, was very high budget.
- 7:42Where are eisodes U for my Mr. and signal?
- 7:46Have you guys seen this director's work before?
- 7:48Suprisingly, I think I've seen all his work.
- 7:51I don't know why I hadn't seen When Life Gives You Tangerines,
- 7:57but yeah, I like his work, especially Sangya, Gwen,
- 7:59Scandal. Like that's my go to comfort,
- 8:03one of my go to comfort dramas. Yeah, it's really good, Lola.
- 8:07You're nodding your head. You're like, absolutely.
- 8:09Absolutely. Oh my gosh, I've missed that
- 8:12drama. I feel like I haven't watched in
- 8:14such a long time and I it's do what we watched, but I also have
- 8:18seen everything I believe except the partner.
- 8:22I don't know why that's not ringing a bell to me.
- 8:24I'm like, well, I don't know about that one, but I've I've
- 8:26seen the ones that you've listed, yes, and Monstar,
- 8:30Monstar, Monstar. I've never seen Monstar, but I
- 8:36know about Monstar. Yeah, I've actually loved the
- 8:39drama when it was airing. However, it's shrouded with
- 8:43controversy based off of the people that were in it, so I
- 8:47don't ever talk about it for that reason, but I really,
- 8:51really enjoyed it at its airing. Turned into a hot potato.
- 8:55Exactly. When Life Gives You Tangerines
- 8:57was written by IM Sang Tung who has written just a few dramas
- 9:02including Becky's Back from 2016, Fight for My Way from 2017
- 9:07which I guested on a review of Fight for My Way on the Swin
- 9:11Diaries podcast if you want to listen to that.
- 9:14And this writer has written When the Camellia Blooms from 2019
- 9:18that won best screenplay at the Pix on Wars.
- 9:21These are highly decorated director and writer.
- 9:25There is a review up on the Tabak feed for When the Camellia
- 9:28Blooms. Have you guys seen this
- 9:30screenwriters dramas? I haven't seen Becky's back, but
- 9:34I have seen When the Camellia Blooms and Fight for My Way.
- 9:38Did you like those two? I did.
- 9:41I'm saying that with like a little I'm gonna, I feel like
- 9:45the bad person because I feel like fight for my ways, like
- 9:48such a beloved drama, but it doesn't have my favorite trope
- 9:50in it. So that's why it's not my
- 9:52favorite. Oh, OK.
- 9:54So it's not so much that it wasn't good, but I don't like
- 9:57that trope of friends for forever.
- 10:00Yes. So for those who don't know and
- 10:02haven't listened to Lola pops off about K dramas, Lola is not
- 10:05a big fan of Friends to Lovers at all.
- 10:08Yeah. At All Friends Love is like my
- 10:10least favorite trope and exes to lovers again, I can't really do
- 10:15I don't do well with those. So that's why I found my way.
- 10:17I'm not a big fan of it, not because it wasn't good, I
- 10:20necessarily, but just I didn't like that trope.
- 10:22And then when the community I actually really enjoy.
- 10:24I'm a huge Kong Hanuru stand, love him to moon and back and
- 10:29also Kong children. So that's why I think I love
- 10:33that one. Carol, what about you?
- 10:36I have seen Fight for My Way and that's the only one I've seen.
- 10:40I did not watch Camellia Blooms because I was like that's not
- 10:43the vibe I'm in. I don't know about it so I
- 10:47skipped it. I mean, yeah, like, if you're
- 10:49not, no, it's going to force you to watch these shows.
- 10:52If it's not in your wheelhouse, if you're not in the mood,
- 10:57great, fine. Do you Boo.
- 10:59So when the camellia, when the camellia moved.
- 11:03You want to call it that so my. God, I want to call it that so
- 11:06bad. It's the it's the freaking
- 11:07writer's fault because they wrote both.
- 11:09Anyway, when life gives you Tangerines stars I you as Oas
- 11:15Hun and her daughter Yong Gum Young.
- 11:17She's the female lead of this here show.
- 11:19And I you, I call her the fairy Princess in a lot of the reviews
- 11:25that I've done of her work. 5 movies and a handful of TV shows
- 11:30starting with Dream High from 2011, which we have covered on
- 11:33the podcast. That was a painful rewatch for
- 11:38me. Moon Lovers, Scarlet Heart Rio
- 11:40from 2016, which is so beloved by a lot of people in the
- 11:43international fan community. I am not one of those people.
- 11:47There is also a deep dive on Moon Lovers on the podcast.
- 11:51She has worked with this director before.
- 11:53She was in My Mr. in 2018, so this is kind of a reunion for
- 11:56them too. She started in Hotel De Luna and
- 11:59this year she's got a drama. Perfect Crown is coming out very
- 12:03soon. How do you guys feel about?
- 12:06IUI actually really enjoy IUI, love her music as much as I do
- 12:13her work and her, you know, her acting work.
- 12:15So I would say I'm an actual big fan of IU.
- 12:18I'm looking at her drama list here that you have and I'm like
- 12:21the one that I I remember. I don't know if anyone else
- 12:24feels this way, but the producers.
- 12:26I dropped the producers. I hate it.
- 12:28I'm not hated. That's a strong word.
- 12:30I Yeah, I don't. I could not.
- 12:32It was a heart watch for you. So I'm right in dropping.
- 12:36It for me, it was a hard wedge. I don't know, but it was really
- 12:39hard. Carol, I do you want to jump in
- 12:41on your IU thoughts? I like her, she's cool.
- 12:45I mean, I don't know, I did not like Hotel de Luna.
- 12:49That's my thing. I know.
- 12:52Lola's face just went Oh my God, how could you?
- 12:54We're. Disappointing each other right
- 12:56off the wind. I'm like, oh, Hotel de Luna, OK,
- 12:59no, that's. Fine, well, Hotel de Luna is a
- 13:02Hong sisters. It is.
- 13:03So it's it's yeah, you can, you can take or leave them sometimes
- 13:07that's. Yeah.
- 13:08Yeah, I tend to leave them personally, but a lot of people,
- 13:11really, they go to bat for the Hong sisters and they love all
- 13:15those dramas. But Hotel de Luna was another
- 13:18drop for me. See, I'm.
- 13:19Not the only one. I did like my Mr. I don't know,
- 13:27I had no intentions of watching When Life Gives You Tangerine.
- 13:31So it's because you said let's do it on the podcast.
- 13:34I was like, OK, I guess I'll watch it.
- 13:36But Park Bull Gum and I you, I was just like, this is just too
- 13:40much for me. They're hit or miss for me
- 13:43sometimes. So I was like, I'm going to sit
- 13:45it out. Well since you mentioned him,
- 13:47her Co stars PAC Bugum for about half of this drama.
- 13:51He plays Yang Kwang Sheikh, he's the male lead.
- 13:54He's been in a handful of movies including Wonderland from 2024.
- 13:57People did not like that movie. I think the general consensus is
- 14:01let's forget it ever happened. I have seen him in a quite a few
- 14:06TV shows including Record of Youth, Love in the Moonlight,
- 14:10Reply 1988. He is very beloved for his Reply
- 14:141988 role. Tech from 20/15/2016.
- 14:19That season was a really good season for him.
- 14:22Have you seen him in shows before?
- 14:25I have seen all his shows except the Good Boy.
- 14:29I haven't seen Good Boy because I don't really like boxing shows
- 14:33like that so but I do like him. He performs well.
- 14:37I think why I struggle with him is I feel he's in his acting.
- 14:43It feels so sometimes robotic for me sometimes depending on
- 14:50the role, but I also I feel a lot of pain in his eyes where
- 14:55it's just lonely. And so I watch him in variety
- 15:00shows and I'm seeing him open up more and he's really, he comes
- 15:04across as really a sweet guy. But I was just like, I need so
- 15:09much healing for you. Yeah, so I'll step in this for a
- 15:13second. Papa Gum, I don't think he's
- 15:16necessarily everyone's cup of acting tea.
- 15:18He is beautiful, beautiful man. Love him, love him down.
- 15:22But yeah, beautiful. What a hottie.
- 15:25He is not everyone's cup of tea when it comes to acting.
- 15:27He's very understated. But I think he excels in the
- 15:33film medium because you can zoom in on his very soulful, well of
- 15:39emotion eyes and I think that works very well.
- 15:43He seems to have an old soul in some of his best works.
- 15:47It plays on that that he doesn't seem young.
- 15:52I see you nodding your head, Lola.
- 15:54Do you want to jump in? Talk about your thoughts on PAC
- 15:57Pogo. I completely agree with Carol
- 16:00and and you're kind of explanation of how he comes off
- 16:04outside of acting. I completely agree where there's
- 16:07like there's just I don't want to say darkness.
- 16:10That sounds really harsh, but like I guess sadness just a
- 16:12little bit softer. But there is something that I
- 16:15feel like the way he presents, how sweet and kind of good guy
- 16:20that he presents, it does seem like that's him trying his best,
- 16:24you know, like I feel like that's his acting in a weird
- 16:26way, not because he's not a good guy, but because he genuinely,
- 16:29like you said, he's like he's healing from something or he's
- 16:32has experienced a lot in his past.
- 16:34I feel like, and he feels like he's putting that out.
- 16:36I'm OK, everything's OK, life is fine, you know, And that's what
- 16:40we get when he's just kind of, you know, out and about.
- 16:42But to me, I think one of my favorite roles of his was
- 16:45actually Hello Monster, where he was like at his dark, one of the
- 16:49darkest. I feel like he was pretty dark
- 16:51in there. And I feel like that really was
- 16:54a sweet spot for him as far as like he's acting portrayal.
- 16:56So him being like the really sweet good guy, kind of like he
- 17:00is. And when life gives you lemons,
- 17:03Tangerines, I do feel like that that matches his appearance, but
- 17:08I don't know if that's like where he shines as far as his
- 17:11acting performances. OK.
- 17:14Remember that scene in Record of Use where he was sort of.
- 17:20It was like a show within a show.
- 17:22No, Yes. Yes.
- 17:23Yes. Yes.
- 17:23Yes, Yes, yes. And you get his eyes go like so
- 17:29I don't know how to express it but dark or.
- 17:32Dark. There's something dark.
- 17:33Yeah, yes. And I was just like, Oh my God,
- 17:38yes, it's good, Yeah. It's good.
- 17:41Yes, I could. Believe.
- 17:42I need him to do more roles like Dio.
- 17:45I feel like if he did more roles like Dio, he would be perfect.
- 17:51Yeah, yeah, he would be perfect. Wow, what AI didn't even think.
- 17:57Yeah, they're definitely competition for certain roles,
- 18:00I'm sure, and maybe in the sense they would want each other's
- 18:04career. Yeah.
- 18:06Yeah, I think. Yeah, yeah, I could totally see
- 18:09that. So to round out the cast,
- 18:11there's a huge massive cast but I'm only going to give you 2
- 18:14more names. Moon, sorry, plays Ason when she
- 18:16is middle-aged. She is basically, I use
- 18:19character, grown up. She's been in 34 movies.
- 18:24She's definitely a film actress more than a television actress.
- 18:27But you might have seen her in Hellbound 2 from 2024.
- 18:32Tong Yun, the star is born also from 2024.
- 18:36Queen Maker, School Nurse Files, Life, Legend of Blue Sea.
- 18:39That's just a handful of her 13 TV shows.
- 18:41Have you seen this actress before?
- 18:44I have and I love her so much and I need everyone to watch the
- 18:48Legend, her first K drama in 2000 and. 7.
- 18:53Amazing as. Soon as you give these early
- 18:56aughts years, we start to lose people.
- 18:59I just. I can hear people shutting down
- 19:02as we speak. I have spoken to too many people
- 19:05in the last several months that just refuse to watch things that
- 19:09are a little older. Yeah, but she has a drama from
- 19:132000 Seven. Give it a watch.
- 19:15Have you watched some of her work, Lola?
- 19:18I have. And I also think she's
- 19:21absolutely stellar. I think she's amazing.
- 19:24I love John Young. The star was born.
- 19:26So I mean, love that so much. So I yeah, I, I love her.
- 19:31And she was great in there. She played as almost a similar
- 19:34role, like the mother figure, you know, the kind of same, I
- 19:39think time period, everything, you know.
- 19:41So I, I like her in that, in that role, in that type of role
- 19:44for sure. PAC Bogum's older middle-aged
- 19:49actor is PAC Hidden, plays the same Kwangshu character.
- 19:53He's been in 24 movies, 18 TV shows.
- 19:57Some of the movies include 12:12 the Day, 20th Century Girl.
- 20:02He's the school nurse, Emergency Declaration.
- 20:06He was in Broker from 2022 alongside IU, The Eighth Night
- 20:11startup TuneIn for Love from 2019.
- 20:14Like a ton of movies and then for TV shows you might have seen
- 20:17him most recently. He's had a really good couple of
- 20:19years here, but Tempest last year, the Disney plus show Emma
- 20:24also from last year, 2022 Love take 2, the 8 show.
- 20:27He's worked with the director before.
- 20:29He's a frequent collaborator. Arth doll chronicles.
- 20:32He's Mupic and I'll tell you right now, when I saw the name
- 20:35Mupic my, I started twitching like I, I was like, Oh my God,
- 20:42too much, too much on Earth. All his most famous K drama has
- 20:47to be the World of the Married from 2020, which I have tossed
- 20:51around the idea of covering on the show because I've never seen
- 20:53the world of the married. But it's a little difficult to
- 20:57find, I guess on streaming platforms.
- 21:00So it's always barred me covering it.
- 21:03Have you seen this actor before? Do you like him in any of these
- 21:07other works that he's been in? I do enjoy him.
- 21:10And I was going to bring up Mubeck because because I I'm not
- 21:16going to say I liked Arthel Chronicles.
- 21:18Yeah, the first one, but the second one.
- 21:21OK. Weirdly, weirdly was better for
- 21:24me. So I enjoyed him as Mubeck.
- 21:27So just to throw that out there that I think if you could get
- 21:30through the 2nd 1, you would enjoy him a little bit better at
- 21:32his Mubeck performance. But yeah, I I definitely love.
- 21:36He's been saying he's been in my Mr., you know, Yeah, World of
- 21:39the Mary. I think he's great.
- 21:40I think he's amazing. I mean, in this drama, too.
- 21:43He broke my heart. Carol.
- 21:46I agree with you Lola. I like him and everything.
- 21:49I especially liked him in the world of the married that is.
- 21:54Oh, that is some grown as sorry, that's a grown show.
- 22:03It's grown. It's.
- 22:04Grown. It was his performance drove me
- 22:08mad. I loved it so much and I
- 22:12remember him feeling like so bad after the show where he's
- 22:16telling people it's the character.
- 22:18It's character, yeah. Dang, yeah.
- 22:23So I can see that happening. Yikes.
- 22:26All right, there are a ton of people, like I said, in this
- 22:29cast, we cannot go over everybody, but I will just put a
- 22:32spotlight on those four. I'm going to turn it over to you
- 22:35guys and just whoever wants to go first.
- 22:37Tell me, what did you think of When Life Gives You Tangerines?
- 22:41This has been touted as the top, if not in the top K dramas of
- 22:462025 and maybe even in the last five years.
- 22:50So I would love to know, does it hold water?
- 22:54I think it holds water. Like I said, it wasn't on my
- 22:57list and when I did watch it, I watched it over the last three
- 23:02days and it was fantastic. I really enjoyed it.
- 23:06I get why people say it was their top drama for 2025.
- 23:11The performances were great. The story is what really stuck
- 23:15with me. I bawled my eyes out and I was
- 23:19just reflecting on myself and my childhood and my mom.
- 23:22And immediately, like I hadn't even finished episode 16 and I
- 23:28started calling my mom's because for me, I had five moms in
- 23:34total. You know, those aunties, the
- 23:37henya aunties, I had moms like that.
- 23:41So I called each of them like in the middle of episode 16.
- 23:45I'm like, thank you so much for taking care of me.
- 23:48Yeah, I. Love you so much.
- 23:50I'm sorry I haven't been in touch.
- 23:52And yeah, I was. I was bawling my eyes out and
- 23:56they were each like, what the hell are you doing?
- 23:57Why are you crying? Stall.
- 24:00The show means a lot to me. Yeah.
- 24:03Means a lot to you, OK. I will say that it I agree that
- 24:07it holds water for sure. For me, I started watching this
- 24:11when it finished airing in, you know, 2025 and I couldn't finish
- 24:16it. I got to episode 6 a year ago
- 24:21and, and literally stopped. I was devastated.
- 24:24I was devastated. I could not continue watching
- 24:27it. And I kept telling my drama, I
- 24:29mean, my, my actual podcast, I kept telling like, oh, I'm going
- 24:32to be back. I'm going to I'm going to talk
- 24:34about it one day. It's so moving.
- 24:36It's so beautiful. It's some of the best writing
- 24:38that I've, you know, I've watched in a long time.
- 24:41I got to review this, but I could not bring myself to go
- 24:44back to that drama until you and said, hey, what do you think
- 24:48about removing my life gives you Tangerines?
- 24:50I was so scared of this trauma. That's because I feel like how
- 24:53you mentioned earlier that you cried from the very beginning to
- 24:56the very end of that episode. I cried in every single episode.
- 25:00Every episode 1 to episode 16, I cried and I even wrote this.
- 25:07I was writing my notes and one of the things I kept noticing
- 25:10when I was looking over my nose, I said I noted when I was crying
- 25:14without knowing I was crying. Like I I did a lot of silent
- 25:17tear just streaming down my face crying throughout the drama.
- 25:21So that's what I mean. It's like it wrecked me.
- 25:23It wrecks me. I was like, I don't know how am
- 25:26I going to talk about this drama?
- 25:27I kept saying that to myself. And I told my sister.
- 25:29I was like, I don't know if I could do this episode because I
- 25:33don't want to cry. Yeah, it totally wrecked me.
- 25:36And I think for me, the reason why is because it's just a
- 25:39wonderful story about life. And to me, those are the hardest
- 25:43stories to watch when it's just like we're just talking about
- 25:46how life beats you up and yet you move on to the next day
- 25:51still. And I struggle just watching
- 25:54them get beat up. But then at the same time, it
- 25:57was so beautiful. And I just really enjoyed the
- 25:59writing. My own background, being a
- 26:01literary girl as they call her. I'm very connected to that
- 26:05element, to the story. But also, like Carol, I could
- 26:08not stop thinking about my parents throughout the entire
- 26:11thing. All I want to do was just, you
- 26:13know, call them, see them, make sure they know I love them.
- 26:17Like that is what that drama definitely did for me.
- 26:20You know, I didn't cry till it soon lost her child.
- 26:24Prior to that I was just very pissed off at as soon I could
- 26:29not her as a kid. I remember sending Jess a voice
- 26:34note saying this girl needs to regulate her emotions.
- 26:38I cannot stand it made me want to drop the drama because I was
- 26:43just like I can't I can't I can't do this and Jess was like
- 26:47just keep going. I get it, just keep going.
- 26:51Going. Keep going.
- 26:52And you're glad you did, Carol. And I'm glad I did.
- 26:55Yes. I almost don't even know where
- 27:00to start on this show. I had very, very low
- 27:05expectations of it. I can start there is that I
- 27:08thought everybody is hyping the show and for what?
- 27:10It's not going to be that good. And again, if you listen to a
- 27:14lot of the end of the year 2025 stuff that I guessed it on, I'm
- 27:17not going to sit here and say, even with the inclusion of
- 27:21having watched When Life Gives You Tangerines, 2025 was a great
- 27:24release year for K dramas. I can't even say that I'm just
- 27:27like, yeah, it's makes it passable.
- 27:31This show, I think I struggled with it maybe a little bit more
- 27:36than you 2 because I am so picky about my slice of life shows.
- 27:42I'm someone that does not like Reply 1988, You know, it doesn't
- 27:47really work as well for me as it does for others.
- 27:50I think the magic sauce in those shows and in this show as well,
- 27:54is knowing a lot of the history of Korea and the pop culture
- 27:59references that pop up consistently throughout the
- 28:03show. I appreciating the changing of
- 28:06technology and the improvements, the industrialization of Korea.
- 28:12All of these things really help your appreciation of the show.
- 28:17That being said, I think I like this better than Reply 1988 and
- 28:22the similar thing that happened to me with Reply 1988 happened
- 28:25to me with this show was that I was watching the show.
- 28:28I was fine. I'm pretty strong, I don't cry
- 28:31very easily and then the last episode rolls around and I'm a
- 28:35puddle. It's I'm toe up from the flow
- 28:37up. For some reason, both Reply 1988
- 28:40and When Life Gives You Tangerines, I was a mess.
- 28:43Could not hold back my tears for the finale episode.
- 28:47When life Gives You Tangerines is, like you said a lot about
- 28:50parents and children and that sometimes very frustrating
- 28:55dynamic and the mountains and valleys of life.
- 28:59And I feel that if I watch the show at different stages of my
- 29:04life, I would appreciate different things about it and
- 29:08glean different things about it. It might hit a little different
- 29:11where I am in my life. I feel like I kind of got the
- 29:14best of both worlds where I really empathize with a lot of
- 29:18the younger characters and understood where they were
- 29:20coming from. But also I'm firmly also on the
- 29:23parents side, firmly for a lot of the show I felt like I was
- 29:29waiting for the family to catch a break the entire show.
- 29:31Exactly exactly. This isn't necessarily the fairy
- 29:35tale kind of setup for K dramas where you expect an overt happy
- 29:41ending, where you expect a clean resolution to a lot of the
- 29:44conflicts and it doesn't go for the easy ending.
- 29:49It is very bittersweet and I almost felt like I was treading
- 29:53water the whole show, just kind of waiting for something big to
- 29:58happen. And but like I said, the finale
- 30:01episode I was hit by a bus. Like I cried straight for over
- 30:05an hour. It opened the floodgates.
- 30:08I will say it is a very very beautiful show. 100% recommend
- 30:12it. I understand why people love it,
- 30:14and in the same fashion, I'm almost trying to keep arm's
- 30:18distance from it because I do feel like it might be overhyped.
- 30:23I don't feel like the cinematography was amazing.
- 30:26I agree. I agree I completely.
- 30:28Agree was left completely wanting there.
- 30:30Same. Yeah, I'm like, this looks like
- 30:33a lot of this was CGI on a blue screen.
- 30:36Yeah. And so the craft of storytelling
- 30:40is the thing of it and not necessarily some of the other
- 30:45pieces that could make this live on in my estimations.
- 30:49I almost want to forget it after we talk about it.
- 30:53A lot of it has to do with I think it's very good, not great.
- 30:57I also think it's amazing and I don't want to reopen these
- 31:02wounds. Completely understand that.
- 31:04Does that make any sense? Complete sense to me OK, I'm
- 31:07sorry. Complete sense.
- 31:09I feel the exact same way as far as like I will never watch this
- 31:13again. I have no desire to ever watch
- 31:16this again. I don't think I'll ever rewatch
- 31:18a scene or two episode here there.
- 31:21I have no desire whatsoever yeah yeah.
- 31:24And I and I and let me, I want to kind of explain myself of
- 31:27being a crybaby as far as be crying throughout the whole
- 31:29drama. This is just a little tidbit
- 31:31about me. I am a sucker for a mother
- 31:34character. So this entire drama is about
- 31:37mothers. OK.
- 31:38So I struggled with that from the very first episode with, you
- 31:42know, a son and her mother dynamic, all of that.
- 31:45So I was legitimately crying every episode because it's just
- 31:48the structure of what a mother is and and what mothers deal
- 31:51with. So I feel like that was what I
- 31:53was crying about throughout the entire drama.
- 31:56But yeah, I completely agree with you that keeping it arm's
- 31:58distance, not having any desire to revisit this again after
- 32:04talking about it, feeling like you want to say what you your
- 32:07piece about it and like, OK, when life gives you did Teresa's
- 32:10done. I love it.
- 32:11Yeah, Move. On.
- 32:15I hear you, I hear you. And I think for me, the crying
- 32:18was more so a deep sadness or a reaffirmation if you will, of
- 32:26seeing my mom was just a girl. She was just a girl and whatever
- 32:33lifetime I met her and she was still just a girl.
- 32:37Also thinking about her parents and the fact that a soon's
- 32:42character at the end is still like mom.
- 32:45I was just like, it reminded me a lot of things that happened in
- 32:50my life and I was just like, wow.
- 32:53I think what got me the most was anytime I use character.
- 32:57So Acen's daughter, anytime she lashed out and the words were so
- 33:05harsh to her parents and it's because she's frustrated.
- 33:09Like when she said I don't like being the first daughter, all
- 33:14this pressure is on me and and stuff like that.
- 33:16I was like, oh, but they're, they're also feeling it too.
- 33:20And you see her crying and that reminded me of my time when I
- 33:25was crying about saying something out of turn.
- 33:27So yeah, maybe I put myself in it too much or trying to work
- 33:34through stuff I don't. Think you saw it.
- 33:36I think this show is like Toy Story 3 levels of emotional
- 33:41manipulation, right? Like, it is totally
- 33:44intentionally trying to make you appreciate your parents and the
- 33:49generations that came before you and how they have struggled to
- 33:53help you rise. Yeah, I was thinking of my
- 33:56family history. It is like messing with the silt
- 33:59that's at the bottom of the river.
- 34:01And you're like, I thought this water was clear.
- 34:03And then all of a sudden, the show comes along, and it's like,
- 34:05oh, no, we're going to mess this all up.
- 34:06We're going to really dredge it up.
- 34:09And so I was thinking about my family.
- 34:11Think about my grandmother. Who, you know, there's a part in
- 34:14the show where the daughter is not allowed to ride a tricycle.
- 34:18And I remember learning to ride a bike.
- 34:20My dad was teaching me how to ride a bike.
- 34:22And my grandmother saying to me, I never learned how to ride a
- 34:24bike. I wasn't allowed to ride a bike
- 34:26in Puerto Rico. People would talk if they saw me
- 34:29riding a bike by myself around town.
- 34:31And I'm like, what do you mean? It just didn't even compute to
- 34:34me. And so a lot of this stuff
- 34:36that's generational. Generational.
- 34:39Is alive and well in a lot of people's memories.
- 34:45That is what makes the show special is that it taps in it.
- 34:47You don't even need to know Korean to know what they're
- 34:50talking about when it comes to that sort of relational,
- 34:54generational, backward thinking kind of stuff that has been
- 34:59worked through by your parents generation or even by your
- 35:03generation. Yeah, that's true.
- 35:06And it's impressive in that respect.
- 35:07It's really impressive to cross cultural lines like that very
- 35:12easily. I.
- 35:13Agree. So yeah, it made me super
- 35:15emotional. It made me want to call my mom
- 35:17just as just as much as it made you want to call all of your
- 35:19aunties and mom figures in your life again.
- 35:24If you get through the show and you're not a sobbing mess,
- 35:26please call me. I wanted to be what you're on
- 35:29because I was very upset. I was so beside myself at 1:30
- 35:35in the morning I cried all my skin care off.
- 35:37Yeah, it was rough. It was rough.
- 35:38I don't want to deal with it, but here we are like, I just
- 35:41want to like dig in deep and then cut out, you know what I'm
- 35:43saying? Yeah.
- 35:45Did you have a favorite era of the show?
- 35:47Because I saw some rumblings online saying I liked the show
- 35:51better when ISON was played by IU.
- 35:55Basically the younger years of this family and this character,
- 35:59and they kind of felt a little falling out or they tapped out a
- 36:03bit when they cut to the future and ISON is no longer played by
- 36:08IU, it's played by Munsori. Did you guys feel any type of
- 36:13way? One of the things that if we
- 36:15were going to say a critique of mine, and it's not a real
- 36:18critique, I think it's just a personal preference.
- 36:20Maybe I did not enjoy seeing IU play all the characters.
- 36:26Like I did not enjoy that. And so I think that's where I
- 36:30could see a little disconnect where I enjoyed her when she was
- 36:32playing Asun, I really enjoyed her there.
- 36:35But then when she, you know, switches and now she's playing
- 36:37Asun's daughter and something about that shifted for me.
- 36:41So it took me a little while after that shift in a couple
- 36:43episodes in to really get adjusted to her playing that
- 36:47that role. And I think that might have been
- 36:49more of a, I don't know if that was an IU thing, if that was an
- 36:53acting thing, if that wasn't the character wasn't spelled out
- 36:56enough for me on the page thing. But it it did take me a little
- 37:00bit to get back into it and enjoy it, that's for sure.
- 37:05The back of force threw me off a little with going back into the
- 37:09past and then coming into the future, especially when as soon
- 37:14as daughter is sort of experiencing parallel things as
- 37:19the mom did in the past. And that threw me.
- 37:25It kept pulling me out of the story a little.
- 37:28I absolutely did not enjoy IU as a son until her son died.
- 37:36After her son died, I was just like, OK, OK, I'm seeing
- 37:39something here. But before I was just like, no
- 37:41thank you. I didn't feel a thing because I
- 37:45was just like, you got to regulate your emotions, girl.
- 37:49And I had to come to the realization that I'm being too
- 37:52harsh with that because I think for myself, I'm always trying to
- 37:59regulate. So when I see someone not
- 38:02regulating I get pissed off. You're like, try harder.
- 38:04Yeah, I'll jump in and say IU does.
- 38:11How do I say this? IU in this show is the best
- 38:14version of IU in an acting sphere like this show.
- 38:19And same thing for packable gum. It's almost they're too good to
- 38:24fail because it's playing to their strengths I feel.
- 38:30And I personally really, really like IU when she is playing a
- 38:35morose, melancholic character like she does in my Mr. like she
- 38:42does in the movie Broker. I think that is doing something
- 38:46different. This is a little bit more
- 38:48standard of AK drama, female lead.
- 38:52And it's not that she does a bad job because there's peaks and
- 38:55valleys like we're going to get into.
- 38:58But I think what you're saying, Carol, is that when she goes
- 39:01through the valley, you locked in finally.
- 39:04Yeah. On her performance.
- 39:07Yeah. But I out of the two of them,
- 39:10Monsuri and Ayu, I definitely like Monsuri better.
- 39:16I thought they were going to do because it's always when shows
- 39:22and movies, whatever media do, the father is or the mother is
- 39:27playing a character and then they're playing another
- 39:30character that very intentionally is supposed to
- 39:33remind the protagonist or whatever of the other parental
- 39:38figure. Like take for instance, Peter
- 39:41Pan Traditionally Captain Hook is played by the the same actor
- 39:46that plays the father of the children, right?
- 39:49Like that is saying something that's talking about the
- 39:52intimidation they feel from their father and the way that he
- 39:56is antagonizing their childhood, right?
- 40:00By forcing them to grow up. Yeah.
- 40:03So I thought, oh, this is also trying to do something.
- 40:06I'm not sure if it was necessarily successful in doing
- 40:09something to that effect, because it's almost like you
- 40:14didn't need IU. Yeah.
- 40:17To play both roles. That's what I'm saying that took
- 40:20me out of it the most. I felt like I completely I
- 40:23completely agree with that. Like, I feel like IU playing
- 40:26both for me took away from me getting the opportunity to
- 40:31really learn our other character outside of a soon.
- 40:36I feel like I was struggling. Yeah.
- 40:38I was. I was having a hard time
- 40:40recognizing who she was outside of her being a mirror of her
- 40:44mother, you know, like, just like her mother, you know, like
- 40:46how Carol mentioned the moments where they like, intentionally
- 40:49were showing, like she was saying verbatim something her
- 40:52mom said back in the past. You know, like, it took me out
- 40:55of it as well. So I feel like if that was a
- 40:58different actor, that would have helped me a little bit better.
- 41:02I feel, I mean, like, like you said, I don't feel like it was
- 41:05necessary for her to do both of them.
- 41:07I I just. Don't I agree?
- 41:09I just, I was talking to you guys before we got started about
- 41:11Withering Heights because there's a new adaptation in
- 41:13theaters. Don't go see it.
- 41:14It's awful. But.
- 41:16I was, I was thinking about all the other adaptations that I've
- 41:19seen of Withering Heights and in one adaptation, the one with Ray
- 41:23Fynes, he plays Heathcliff. The same actress plays Kathy and
- 41:30then Kathy Junior. Which, how confusing is that?
- 41:32But that's not necessary. It's not necessary.
- 41:36That's not necessary to do that. I think that might be doing too
- 41:39much. Yeah.
- 41:40And then when you. Because they're not different
- 41:42enough. I don't, I don't know.
- 41:44That's true. Like you need that extra
- 41:46distance. You do?
- 41:48Yeah. I, I I.
- 41:50Can't even I, I don't have the words to articulate why it's
- 41:54different than like Captain Hook and the dad and yes, whatever.
- 41:57But yeah, I kind of am left with more about it than a wow that
- 42:03really made the show. And the other part is by the
- 42:10end. This story is about a soon to
- 42:15me. So why is my screen flooded with
- 42:17IU? And she's the only person who
- 42:21gets 2 roles. Paco Gun does not get 2 roles I.
- 42:25Completely agree. Exactly.
- 42:27I completely. Agree.
- 42:29So that also pissed me off A. Little It almost feels selfish
- 42:34to do that in such a you have so many characters in this show,
- 42:39what is one more? What is 1?
- 42:42More What is one more? Why can't you just introduce us
- 42:44to a new actor, a new face? Because this has been a
- 42:49wonderful vehicle to introduce new actors to the world.
- 42:53Yeah, absolutely. Instead, we doubled up on IU and
- 42:56it's like, we love IU, we know IU, let's move on.
- 42:59Yes, that's what I'm saying. I.
- 43:01Completely agree. OK.
- 43:03All right. So we are kind of opposite from
- 43:06some of the majority in that respect because I think everyone
- 43:09loves IU and they would love to see more of her on their screens
- 43:12and they probably worked just fine for them.
- 43:14That you played two roles, the mother and the daughter.
- 43:19This series, like I said, was praised endlessly for its
- 43:22performances, screenplay and direction.
- 43:24Who do you think was the weak link of the show?
- 43:27Who was the weak link of the show as in?
- 43:31Acting wise. Weak acting wise.
- 43:36I don't a weak link as far as acting goes.
- 43:40Out of the main cast or the whole show?
- 43:42Let's keep it to main cast. Main cast.
- 43:48Oh, this is hard. Kimsuno.
- 43:50Oh. Because we didn't one, we didn't
- 43:53really see him, but I, I don't think he like really brought
- 44:00anything. OK, I don't know.
- 44:03Is it Kimsuno? Here's here's why it's difficult
- 44:07to sort of determine because you mentioned Mark Bogam and IU do
- 44:12really well in certain kinds of roles and that's what we know
- 44:16them for. So is it a weak link or is it
- 44:21just being in their zone? I'm not giving it to Munsari.
- 44:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or maybe I would give it to the
- 44:33guy who had a crush on Asun and his family.
- 44:37So I was going to. Left him in the end.
- 44:39The guy that had a crush on Asun O, You said it.
- 44:43Yes, Youngbaum. Yes you do, Young.
- 44:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I would.
- 44:48I think I would go towards him. I'm talking about the guy she
- 44:51was going to marry. Yes.
- 44:54Yes. Yes, Ethan Young plays PAC
- 44:57Young. Boom.
- 44:59I would say he is a weak link. I would argue that every time IU
- 45:04is doing the kind of thing, she's a weak link.
- 45:10Yes. I mean, and I'm being very
- 45:14harsh, like I'm pulling this out where people are probably never
- 45:19asking this question. Yeah, but I wouldn't give it to
- 45:23the older. Two actors?
- 45:24No, not at all. Not at all.
- 45:28I will say the male lead, so originally played by POC Bogam
- 45:32and then played by Pockage, and this character felt the realist
- 45:37out of all the characters to me just based on my my own family
- 45:42history. My grandfather is basically this
- 45:45character calling she very sweet spirit would worship the ground
- 45:51my grandmother walked on. They were married for 50 years.
- 45:54He got dementia, Alzheimer's in the end, and he was bedridden
- 45:59for seven years and he forgot all of us, forgot all of our
- 46:01names, never forgot her. Beautiful.
- 46:06Oh, never. Forget her.
- 46:08Yeah. So all of these odd jobs and the
- 46:11way that Kwan tik would do anything to put food on the
- 46:14table and was fishing and stuff. My dad, he said this a couple of
- 46:19times in my life, but I've always remembered it.
- 46:21He's like, for the first few years of my life, up until maybe
- 46:24I was a teenager, I didn't realize we were poor.
- 46:26I love that. And I was like, what do you
- 46:30mean? He was like, because we, you
- 46:31know, we always had food on the table.
- 46:33We always, I didn't realize that not having a room growing up,
- 46:38that I would sleep on the couch in the living room was not like,
- 46:41that's that we're poor. You know, we were in a 2 bedroom
- 46:45house for five of us. And my grandfather used to bring
- 46:51home, he would work on the docks or something like that and would
- 46:54bring home boxes of lobster. And they would be like, EW, I
- 46:58don't want lobster. Him and my aunts would be like,
- 47:00I don't like lobster. And they didn't know how good.
- 47:02Like, now he's like, I didn't realize that lobsters were such
- 47:07a, you know, delicacy. Yeah.
- 47:09Yeah. But yeah, cute stories like that
- 47:12that really reminded me of my grandfather and Kwang Sheikh
- 47:17being so close. So that was my favorite
- 47:20character. That was the character that I
- 47:22really that it just sang for me. Did you have a character that
- 47:26also left off the screen for you?
- 47:29Mine was Quanchek too, because by the end I was just like, you
- 47:33know that list that what I'm looking for in a guy.
- 47:37Quanchek just went to the top and then I'm sitting here like,
- 47:41OK, is that person real? So I'm so happy you said your
- 47:44grandpa is like that because that means that person's real.
- 47:48But at first I had Nam Gu Ming's character in my.
- 47:53Dear Yeah. So now I was comparing both of
- 47:58them and I was like damn I I do think I would still go for a
- 48:04Quan shake. So I'm looking for my Quan
- 48:06shake. If you have any hookup, let them
- 48:10slide in my DM. Yeah.
- 48:12Yeah, send them your way for sure.
- 48:15I completely agree, I think he was definitely my stand out
- 48:19character as well. I mean, I could write a book on
- 48:24his character, to be honest with you.
- 48:26I could I could go on and on about him, but I completely
- 48:30agree with that. But I will say that I'd stand
- 48:32out character for me, that I, and I always like to do this.
- 48:35I like to, you know, throw everybody for a loop.
- 48:38I would have to say for me, another stand out was BU Sangil,
- 48:43played by one of my favorite actors, Che de Hoon.
- 48:46OK, yeah, I know. I absolutely adore him as an
- 48:51actor. And I think he's a, he's the
- 48:54definition of a scene Stiller when it comes to acting for me.
- 48:57Whenever he comes on the screen, I don't think about anyone else.
- 49:01And that happened throughout this entire drama, even with his
- 49:05character being just kind of just despicable at times and
- 49:09just gross at times and just horrible.
- 49:11But I could not look away from his performance.
- 49:14And so his character really stood out to me, even though he
- 49:18was a character you weren't supposed to be, you know,
- 49:20fawning over by any means. But the performance was just
- 49:23too, too, too good. And then I did like how his
- 49:26character kind of evolved towards the end there.
- 49:27I love seeing him as a grandfather, I'm not gonna lie.
- 49:30Just seeing him on screen in general, I was having a good
- 49:32time so I wouldn't have to throw him out there cuz I just stand
- 49:36out seeing Stiller. Yeah, that's great.
- 49:39He's really good. And he surprised me as well,
- 49:41especially how they wrote his character cuz it's so complex,
- 49:44so complex, so complex and he's a side character.
- 49:48He's that's what I'm like mean. And he was so jealous of Crunchy
- 49:53so. Jealous, so jealous.
- 49:55But their friendship at the end there, I was like, I kind of
- 49:57love this though. Yeah, the person I did struggle
- 50:01with was Park Yong. Run like his wife.
- 50:06Sis, why are you? Why are you there?
- 50:09Why are? You.
- 50:10She never really explained it either.
- 50:12She never really explained it. Yeah.
- 50:14It's kind of she's just trapped in this bad habit and he is
- 50:19providing for her, I guess, in that she has food on the table
- 50:24and she has a roof over her head and she probably doesn't have
- 50:29much else in the way of an education.
- 50:31So she's trapped is what I gathered.
- 50:36And I love how she goes through an evolution as well in the show
- 50:40and it takes decades for her to change.
- 50:44A lot of these side characters are really special.
- 50:47I'll tell you what I loved I wanted to see more of this
- 50:49character and we just can't do it.
- 50:52I understand why we can't do it, but Kumheran plays the Henyo
- 50:57mother to Esson, Esson's mother. She was everything.
- 51:01I could have gone five more episodes.
- 51:03With her five more, it could have just about her.
- 51:05That could have been just about her.
- 51:07That's who was making me cry so early in the show.
- 51:11She was too good. Too good.
- 51:13I think she's fantastic. This show got a lot of accolades
- 51:17and eight nominations at the 61st Pick Song Awards, winning
- 51:22four of them, including best drama.
- 51:24Time magazine named this the best Korean drama of 2025, and I
- 51:29thought this was something of note.
- 51:32Time magazine praised the series for being devastatingly profound
- 51:36quote, showing not only the story of one family, but also
- 51:39the story of Korea's modernization from the post war
- 51:42period to today and highlighting a rich and distinct cultural
- 51:46history of Teju Island, which I thought was a perfect synopsis
- 51:51or read of the show. I thought this was interesting.
- 51:55The production on this show was very expensive, reported to be
- 52:00around 60 billion won. Wow.
- 52:04Which equates to in today's dollars, the day that we're
- 52:07recording $41,641,797. And $0.24 that can't be.
- 52:15True. That is the equivalent.
- 52:16That is the production cost of this show.
- 52:19What? So I went back into the archives
- 52:23and I asked what was the typical budget for AK Drama 10 years
- 52:28ago, 2016 and approximately per episode it cost 700 million won
- 52:36to make a single episode of AK drama.
- 52:38And that equates to if it's a 16 episode K drama, that's 11.2
- 52:43billion won. What does that equate to in U.S.
- 52:47dollars? That's 7,773,130.
- 52:51Five U.S. Dollars ten years ago
- 52:54thereabouts in that range to make AK drama, which means this
- 53:00drama is about 6 times Yeah, it cost 6 times what it would
- 53:07normally cost to make AK drama in 2016 to make when life Gives
- 53:11you Tangerines. How much was that pay of the
- 53:14actors? That's what I want.
- 53:15To know that's. The question they would never
- 53:17actually. They would never let.
- 53:18Us they would never. How much did IU charge for two
- 53:21rolls? For two rolls, how much IU?
- 53:25How much was that? Give us the numbers.
- 53:29I wanted to bring up the budget because I don't I'm not quite
- 53:32sure where it went. Where it went in their pockets,
- 53:35I was it has to be in pay, it has to be.
- 53:38But this is not sustainable. At all.
- 53:41If the best K drama of 2025 touted by Time, touted by so
- 53:46many people, cost 41.6 million U.S. dollars to make, and you
- 53:53want to flood the industry with $41 million K dramas, it's not
- 53:56going to happen. I kind of want it to happen.
- 53:59That is not sustainable. I want it to, I want it to break
- 54:02so that then we can go back to yesteryear.
- 54:04Like those cheap ass key dramas with a good story.
- 54:07Yes, I want to go back, take us back, take us back.
- 54:12And I don't know if you guys had thoughts on it, but I just
- 54:14wanted to throw that in there. I do think the bubble is going
- 54:18to burst soon, or I hope it does, where it stabilizes the
- 54:22cost of making these dramas. Yes, the story is great, but the
- 54:28story is you can put it in like 2000 and two 2000 and four 2000
- 54:35like in the early years and it would fit right in.
- 54:40I also do think they would have better shots from what we get in
- 54:48Tangerine. I'm so disappointed in the Jeju.
- 54:50Shot I'm not crazy. This looks like slop.
- 54:52No Netflix slop crazy. Absolutely this.
- 54:55Looks like every other Netflix movie and TV show.
- 55:00Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 55:02So I think it went into the actors pay.
- 55:04Absolutely. Does it doesn't make any sense
- 55:07for it? Because I like you said, that
- 55:08was one of the things that stood out to me as a big no no, is
- 55:12that for it to be the top kid drama of 2025 and for it
- 55:16cinematically not to be or cinematographically not be as
- 55:20beautiful as it could have been? It just doesn't make sense.
- 55:22Like you should have been one of the most beautiful dramas I've
- 55:25seen on the screen in a long time with the way that they talk
- 55:28about this drama. And it was so easy.
- 55:30You were in J Judo like you should.
- 55:32It should be easy to shoot how beautiful that is.
- 55:36Yeah, So I'm so confused. I'm so confused.
- 55:39Why? Yeah, I don't know.
- 55:42So what would you give when life gives you Tangerines out of
- 55:45fives? Hold your bottles. 5 being the
- 55:47best zero to 1 being terrible. Right, Carol, I'll go after you.
- 55:51I want. To give it 3.6, give it 3. .63
- 55:57point 6 I was expecting. OK, Carol, talking through your
- 56:00score, talking through your. Score.
- 56:04Well, a 50% is 2.5. I'm a big cinematography person
- 56:09and like I said, I don't think it was the best in terms of
- 56:14cinematography, but it also just what I mentioned earlier, the
- 56:22story could have been a couple of years ago, not a couple, 20
- 56:26years ago, and it would have worked and it would have felt
- 56:30like the K dramas that I knew. So 33.6.
- 56:36It feels unfair to give it a four looking at the other dramas
- 56:39that we've given 4, especially for the cinematography.
- 56:42So by saying it could have been done a couple of years ago, what
- 56:47do you mean by that? I mean, the story and why
- 56:53everyone loves it so much makes me feel like you love it so much
- 56:59because you're not watching the shows in 2004.
- 57:02You're not watching. Sorry.
- 57:05That's what I mean. I'll just stop.
- 57:07It Carol. Did you just gag the girls,
- 57:09Carol? So you're OK, so let me get this
- 57:13straight. I'm not a contesting your
- 57:16ranking, your rating. I'm just trying to get a better
- 57:19handle on why you why you gave it 3.6.
- 57:22So you're saying because this show is not reinventing the
- 57:27wheel necessarily? And.
- 57:31It's impressing people that don't have a deep well of K
- 57:34drama knowledge. Ouch, that sounds harsh.
- 57:36Is it? That's what I'm gathering.
- 57:38I wouldn't say deep knowledge of K drama, not like deep
- 57:42understanding. I just, I don't know what to
- 57:47tell. You do you know there is
- 57:48something to be said about the hook of IU and PAC Bogum in the
- 57:51first few episodes? I and I didn't like the first
- 57:55few episodes. It took me till episode When did
- 58:00the kid die? 6-7?
- 58:02For me, it was like, okay, yeah, for me to be like, OK, I can get
- 58:07into this. Mind you, I did like Park
- 58:10Bogum's character himself, like throughout the show.
- 58:15And I was just like, ah, you, this foolish boy, why are you
- 58:17still following this selfish guilt?
- 58:20But I got it. I got it.
- 58:23He he liked her, but her character I could not connect
- 58:28with her until her kid died. Yeah, she's a little tough,
- 58:33Tough nut to crack. Lola, why don't you give us your
- 58:36rating? I was preparing for this
- 58:38because, you know, this is the hardest part for me.
- 58:40I don't do well with like. You don't do this on your.
- 58:42Phone so I don't and so I've always like OK, I have to be
- 58:46prepared so I thought about this beforehand and I was going
- 58:49between like a four and then a 4.5 but I think I had landed on
- 58:55a four only because of that. I want to completely to say that
- 59:02I agree a lot with what Carol was just saying.
- 59:05As far as the story itself is, it could have been done years
- 59:10ago. It's not something that I feel
- 59:12like I haven't seen before in that to be honest.
- 59:15I feel like I have seen this show before and other dramas.
- 59:19So I do feel like that to me means that it wasn't anything
- 59:24life changing. Because of that.
- 59:26I feel like if you isolate it, it it can feel life changing.
- 59:30But if you think about it in the grand scope of K drama, for me,
- 59:35it's not life changing. What are their beautiful,
- 59:38beautiful moments? Did I relate to a lot of it?
- 59:41Did it make me, you know, like I said, feel all these emotions
- 59:45throughout? Absolutely.
- 59:47But it was for me, like it wasn't something that I hadn't
- 59:52seen before to the point where I feel like it needs to be.
- 59:56I mean, I feel like it could be heralded in 2025.
- 59:59I think that's absolutely fine. But I wouldn't say under the
- 1:00:02grand scream of like this type of story, it was completely life
- 1:00:05changing. Like for example, and this is me
- 1:00:08talking about John Young, the star is born.
- 1:00:10Like I felt there was a lot of similarity weirdly about like
- 1:00:14the time period kind of where it was located and things like
- 1:00:16that. And I felt like I got a lot more
- 1:00:20from that experience than I did when life gives you tangerine.
- 1:00:24So I don't want to say that I didn't enjoy the drama.
- 1:00:27I did in the watching moment. Right.
- 1:00:30So that makes sense. But when I step out of it,
- 1:00:32absolutely. I'm like, OK, I watched it, you
- 1:00:35know? Yeah, Exactly.
- 1:00:37Exactly. OK.
- 1:00:38I'm going to jump in and give my score is basically 4 out of five
- 1:00:42hold you bottles as well similar.
- 1:00:45I mean, I think we're all really close to each other because 3.6
- 1:00:48versus 4. Is.
- 1:00:50You know, make a difference. But yeah, there's something to
- 1:00:53be said for the fact that this didn't stick to my bones and I'm
- 1:00:58going to basically pair it. What you said, Lola, that it was
- 1:01:01very easy to stop watching this show at any point.
- 1:01:05Like I was at episode 8, stopped at episode 8 for months and I
- 1:01:10never felt, wow, I need to go back and finish When life gives
- 1:01:13you Tangerines. This is missing from my life.
- 1:01:16Never, ever, ever. And even when I was finishing
- 1:01:18and on my way to the finale that, you know, told me up, I
- 1:01:25again, didn't feel any sense of urgency, any sense of this is
- 1:01:29going to make my year at all. Like you said, this is not
- 1:01:34reinventing the wheel. Yeah, I've seen other K drama,
- 1:01:38slice of life shows that touched me more and I guess in more
- 1:01:43profound ways, despite this being a very profound show.
- 1:01:45Like I'm not going to take that away from it.
- 1:01:47It was going for the emotional jugular and I think that it's
- 1:01:52successful in that. But yeah, I I can't say it's the
- 1:01:57best of the last five years. It's definitely of the best of
- 1:02:012025. I don't know.
- 1:02:04Maybe it's because we've been watching K dramas for a really
- 1:02:06long time, you know, all three of us, and we've seen a lot of
- 1:02:11stuff. I don't know.
- 1:02:12I don't know what to tell you. Yeah.
- 1:02:15But yeah, I think that's. You know, it's, it's kind of the
- 1:02:18difference between same thing for movie years.
- 1:02:21You're like 1997 was a great year.
- 1:02:23Then you look at other years and you're like the best of this
- 1:02:25year is not the same caliber as the best of this other year.
- 1:02:30And I think that's kind of what we're edging toward is that when
- 1:02:34life gives you Tangerines is great in its weight class.
- 1:02:37Yes, yeah. Yes, And when you talk about,
- 1:02:40you know, the Time magazine review, and please forgive me if
- 1:02:44this sounds harsh, I'm just like, ah, by you, Times
- 1:02:47Magazine, the American shows, none of you hits like this.
- 1:02:50So of course you are going to see this as an amazing thing.
- 1:02:54It's not amazing to some of us who have been here for decades.
- 1:03:00Yeah. And I, I don't want that to
- 1:03:02sound disparaging to those that were really touched by this
- 1:03:06show. We.
- 1:03:07Are still touched by it. We were touched.
- 1:03:09We haven't seen. We've been crying.
- 1:03:10For hours watching this show every episode.
- 1:03:13Yeah. But there is some that we have a
- 1:03:16little perspective I guess is what we're all trying to get out
- 1:03:20with these scores. Overall, this is this is great,
- 1:03:25but it's not long term changing us in fundamental ways and
- 1:03:32making us reassess what K dramas can do, which I think that's
- 1:03:37sort of the feedback that I was picking up when people were
- 1:03:41watching When Life Gives You Tangerines is that this is like
- 1:03:43a life changing experience. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:47We're all making faces like. I get it though.
- 1:03:51I get it. I completely get it.
- 1:03:53But I also, you know what? I, OK, this is one thing I will
- 1:03:56say about the drama and that I, I will give it.
- 1:03:59I will say that from a writing perspective, I do feel like it
- 1:04:03is so beautiful. I really think it like from a
- 1:04:06writer writing kind of thing. Like if you're a writer, like
- 1:04:09the what the writer does is phenomenal.
- 1:04:12Like you, there's a lot throughout the the drama that I
- 1:04:14just think is phenomenal. And I think that it does a lot
- 1:04:16that you can pick apart that you can analyze that you can, you
- 1:04:20know, move and, and, and connect the dots.
- 1:04:22And I feel like that is special. And I feel like sometimes when K
- 1:04:26drama world and K drama land, even in the past, I feel like
- 1:04:30that wasn't always the focus, you know what I mean?
- 1:04:32Like just to to kind of put certain Nuggets and and and use
- 1:04:37certain things and as far as writing style goes and these
- 1:04:40stories, But I feel like that might have struck with a lot of
- 1:04:44people. I think that was new for people
- 1:04:47in K drama, like just having a a story that has like these things
- 1:04:51that like the motif of the the seasons and the the the colors
- 1:04:55and the springs and, and comparing the the characters to
- 1:04:58sometimes the seasons. And I just feel like a lot of.
- 1:05:00That non linear. Storytelling exactly, that's not
- 1:05:05that's kind of I think new for K drama watchers in a way, but I
- 1:05:10don't think it's you know, it hasn't done before, but I do
- 1:05:12feel like like that's what stood out, I think, in this 2025, at
- 1:05:16least for this show. All right, fair enough.
- 1:05:19Can I ask a question? Yeah.
- 1:05:21Why is the show called When Life Gives You Tangerines?
- 1:05:24Why do you why do you think Lola before I jump in?
- 1:05:27Oh, I don't know. Like I don't know if it was
- 1:05:29mentioned in the story or not, but I always just assumed that
- 1:05:31it was like the idea of play on when life gives you lemons,
- 1:05:34yeah, and you make lemonade and then when life gives you
- 1:05:37Tangerines because they were in Jeju the whole time.
- 1:05:40So I was I was assuming it was something like that.
- 1:05:43I think you just nailed it, but OK.
- 1:05:45Go ahead. I I agree with that.
- 1:05:47And that makes sense. I think, you know, when you name
- 1:05:51a title, you're expecting for that name to show up in the show
- 1:05:56or in the movie or in some way. And I was reflecting on, wait,
- 1:06:01how many times did we actually see or hear Tangerines in the
- 1:06:06show? And we they're shown a lot.
- 1:06:10I thought it was they were persimmons more so because like
- 1:06:15the big moments when they sold their house, it was a Persimmon
- 1:06:18tree. When I used character was
- 1:06:21getting finally getting married. The mom had gifted Tangerines
- 1:06:26and then she received persimmons, dried persimmons.
- 1:06:30So I was like huh interesting. Why is this called when life
- 1:06:35gives you Tangerines? But I get your response.
- 1:06:38Yeah, I think there's Tangerines weaving in and out of it, like
- 1:06:41literal Tangerines weaving in and out of the show.
- 1:06:45And like Lola said, the play on the backs.
- 1:06:50And when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.
- 1:06:53You know, it's Lola mentioned briefly the changing of the
- 1:06:56seasons and that being a recurring motif in the show and
- 1:07:01life and loss and renewal and struggle and acceptance and all
- 1:07:05of these themes that the show explores through the lives of
- 1:07:09these characters. It's touching on resilience and
- 1:07:14it's just not about enduring hardship.
- 1:07:17It's about finding the warmth and the meaning and the beauty
- 1:07:20in life. And that is an element, I guess,
- 1:07:24of making lemonade in hard times, or in this case,
- 1:07:30tangerine juice, I guess. Yes.
- 1:07:34Also, I think in one of the final episodes, Essen writes a
- 1:07:39poem and the poems, one of the final lines has something about
- 1:07:42when life gives you Tangerines. Yeah, OK, that's weird.
- 1:07:45There is a direct quote I think in that and.
- 1:07:47Then the final episode too. There's the scene when Essen is
- 1:07:51sitting with her mom about talking about the poetry
- 1:07:54collection. She's Pilling tangerine.
- 1:07:56Yeah, sure. Final scene.
- 1:07:58Yeah. She pills Tangerines a few
- 1:07:59times. Yeah.
- 1:08:00Yeah. And then gives it to her mom.
- 1:08:01And then, like, there's also, like, a solo shot on the
- 1:08:04tangerine. I felt like I was like, OK,
- 1:08:06they're trying to nail it home. Tangerine.
- 1:08:09So see, I missed all that, OK. You watched it very fast, Carol
- 1:08:14inside the reading. Here I was in AI mean I took me
- 1:08:17a year to watch it, So yeah, Thursday.
- 1:08:20Friday is Saturday. Yeah, three days.
- 1:08:23Three days. All right, we're going to get
- 1:08:25going on some spoilers. We're going to be back and spoil
- 1:08:28what happens and when life goes to Tangerines right after this.
- 1:08:32Excuse me. Bora, go.
- 1:08:34I can't. Tara.
- 1:08:36Can't. Tara, You know I have no
- 1:08:38tingles. Oh, sorry.
- 1:08:40Swear. Discussing shirts?
- 1:08:43What? All right, so we're on the other
- 1:08:49side of spoilers. We're going to spoil When Life
- 1:08:51Gives You Tangerines. And again, this is not a recap
- 1:08:53podcast. We cannot go through every
- 1:08:55single episode of this show, all the minutiae.
- 1:08:59We're not, we're not going to do that.
- 1:09:00But I think we do want to start with some characters and talk
- 1:09:05through a few of their journeys. Did you guys have a character in
- 1:09:09mind to start on? Can we start with Quanshee?
- 1:09:12Yeah, yeah, go for it. I loved Crunchy's character.
- 1:09:16I remember saying I don't understand why he's with this
- 1:09:20selfish girl or what I felt like was selfish, if you will, in the
- 1:09:27beginning. But.
- 1:09:30You know, it was, I have to say, go ahead.
- 1:09:32My grandmother was not the nicest person.
- 1:09:35So I mean, she was a St. but she was not.
- 1:09:40She was very similar in a way to essence character and that's why
- 1:09:47I guess I believed it that he was like so attracted to this
- 1:09:52stubborn bratty girl. I was like, that might be, I
- 1:09:57don't know if that's a a thing, a thing, but this, these types
- 1:10:01of personalities to attract each other, but opposites attract.
- 1:10:04Yeah, very much the opposites. But you didn't understand his
- 1:10:08fascination with her. Yeah, especially when they were
- 1:10:11kids. I was like, I don't get it.
- 1:10:13I don't get it, Brov. But I really appreciated how he
- 1:10:20was just a solid rock. Yeah.
- 1:10:23And there were times when I was wondering how he was feeling and
- 1:10:29how he was dealing with things because we always see Asun's
- 1:10:34character speak out her emotions, speak out her
- 1:10:38frustrations, her anger. And we never really get to see
- 1:10:43him speak up. Only towards the end when they
- 1:10:46went to the hospital and he's like finally sharing what he is,
- 1:10:52who and what he's resentful for and it just made me feel again.
- 1:10:59Parkville gum. The loneliness, the the sadness,
- 1:11:03the struggling with something behind his eyes that really
- 1:11:09stuck to me. I loved how he was willing to do
- 1:11:13anything for the family to put food on the table.
- 1:11:17And I especially loved how he wanted Asun to shine because he
- 1:11:25knew she just had it in her. And when he they asked him, what
- 1:11:29do you want to be? He's like, I want to be the
- 1:11:30first lady. I was just like, that is so
- 1:11:35sweet, but also, what do you want?
- 1:11:38And it's sort of I had to accept like, oh, he just wants to be
- 1:11:42there for her to remove the obstacles as much as he can for
- 1:11:48her. That was pretty lovely.
- 1:11:50And I think what I particularly liked was he wasn't just nice to
- 1:11:56a Soon we see the actor lady who comes back and helps his
- 1:12:01business. But even that just spoke to his
- 1:12:05character that, oh, this person is just a kind, caring person.
- 1:12:11And oftentimes we'll see. Oh, I want him to be kind, but
- 1:12:17only to me. Oh yeah.
- 1:12:19He should treat everyone else like Doo Doo.
- 1:12:24It's like Doo Doo. So that's what I was just like,
- 1:12:29a kind person is a really good person.
- 1:12:33Even if they don't have, they will find a way to give.
- 1:12:38So yeah. Yeah.
- 1:12:40General thoughts. I like that you mentioned that
- 1:12:43he's not. He's kind of not a man of many
- 1:12:45words. He is quite literally a steel
- 1:12:49heart. That's what their nickname for
- 1:12:50him is, that he's the steel heart and he keeps a lot of
- 1:12:54stuff bottled up and locked away and you just never see it.
- 1:12:57But he is very much a caring, kind individual.
- 1:13:02As you said, Asun is the sun and he is in her orbit and that is
- 1:13:08all that he cares about. She is number 1.
- 1:13:12And I love that he made all these promises to her, which I
- 1:13:16can't even remember what they are, but basically that she's
- 1:13:18going to go to school, get a get a higher education, that she
- 1:13:23would be a published poet at some point, as I think what some
- 1:13:27of the promises were. I feel like there were three,
- 1:13:29but I only remember 2. And life happens, you know, they
- 1:13:35get pregnant very young, They marry when they're super duper
- 1:13:38young. She gets kicked out of school
- 1:13:40because of their little tryst that they do in the mainland.
- 1:13:44And they have all these fun shenanigans in this like sex
- 1:13:48motel that they stay at for one night that scams them and all of
- 1:13:51the stuff they have to start building life right away.
- 1:13:55And I dare you to find a family that hasn't had some version of
- 1:14:00this happen in their family history where it's like, well,
- 1:14:04we were really young. We didn't know what to do, but
- 1:14:06we just made it happen and we had to pivot.
- 1:14:08And even in my life, my mom is was always a working mom.
- 1:14:13And I asked her one day, like, did you always want to do what
- 1:14:16you were doing now? Did you always want to be in
- 1:14:17accounting? And she was like, no, I wanted
- 1:14:20to be a doctor. I wanted to be a doctor was her
- 1:14:24dream. And I was like, what happened?
- 1:14:26She was like, well, I got buried.
- 1:14:27And then I got pregnant with you five years later.
- 1:14:28And I was like, oh, so very similar fashion where you just
- 1:14:34have to pivot. Life happens.
- 1:14:35And it's not that these dreams are unimportant, but they just
- 1:14:38manifest in different ways. Yeah.
- 1:14:42Completely agree. So I loved Quan Sheikh and how
- 1:14:44he was basically haunted by the fact that he could not give her
- 1:14:48what he promised her. She never got to go to school.
- 1:14:52And in the end, he's like, thank God that you're a published
- 1:14:56writer and you got to be the poet that we always knew you
- 1:15:01were. But she also got to be chief.
- 1:15:04Yes, the chief thing. Oh my gosh, yeah.
- 1:15:07And when he was campaigning for her, I was just like, oh, this
- 1:15:10man, he really pushed her or supported her in going for what
- 1:15:17she wanted and trying to make her happy and whatnot.
- 1:15:22I guess his purpose was her. And I absolutely loved when he
- 1:15:27would prioritize her in front of the kids and be like, don't give
- 1:15:31it to the kids you enjoy or don't do this with the kids.
- 1:15:35You go do it. He basically this patriarchal
- 1:15:40society is put on blast for the front half of the show,
- 1:15:44especially when Kwanchik makes all of these seemingly tiny
- 1:15:49decisions that place him closer to Aslan and farther away from
- 1:15:54his family, his blood relations, his mother, his grandmother.
- 1:16:00I wondered how you guys felt about that and how those
- 1:16:03decisions impacted your view of Quanchik.
- 1:16:06I loved it because my dad did the same.
- 1:16:12My dad like, pretty much moved out with my mom.
- 1:16:16And now when I asked my dad about it, he's just like, yeah,
- 1:16:20I had to do what I had to do to protect my family, to protect
- 1:16:24your mom. So that made sense to me 100%.
- 1:16:28And I didn't think too deeply about it.
- 1:16:32And then also trying to support her dreams.
- 1:16:36Like when I was born, my mom was in school.
- 1:16:38And that's why I have all these aunties and moms.
- 1:16:41She was doing a postgraduate degree at the time.
- 1:16:45And that's why I have all these secondary moms.
- 1:16:47And so I remember asking my dad, dad tell me the story of my
- 1:16:52birth and he's like, he starts talking about maybe 3 months
- 1:16:57into being on the side of the planet and then starts talking
- 1:17:00about all the other aunties and their role, whatever.
- 1:17:04Just because your mom wanted to go to school, I wanted to
- 1:17:08support your mom going to school.
- 1:17:10So I was just like, that is so sweet.
- 1:17:14I mean, go you. Lola, talk to me about Quintic.
- 1:17:18I like we mentioned earlier, I absolutely love Quan Shake.
- 1:17:21He was probably my favorite character of the drama and he's
- 1:17:24the one that I feel like I have the most notes about.
- 1:17:27One of the things that I did like or enjoy doing while
- 1:17:31watching the the drama was comparing him to the seasons
- 1:17:35because I felt like there were these moments where I mean, they
- 1:17:39do it themselves in the drama, to be honest.
- 1:17:41But I liked picking it apart a little bit more.
- 1:17:43Like the idea of him being her first love, Asan's first love,
- 1:17:47and that being spring. And in the end she describes as
- 1:17:50like he made her days everyday spring because of him.
- 1:17:54You know, So I love that idea of like he make spring possible, if
- 1:17:58that makes sense for her. So I love that.
- 1:18:01And then the idea of which? Spring.
- 1:18:02If we sit there for a second spring, spring, everything is in
- 1:18:06bloom. Everything is.
- 1:18:08Bright love is beautiful. Love is in the air.
- 1:18:11Things are growing. And even poetry, I feel like,
- 1:18:15and there's, and I feel like poetry too is a big part of the
- 1:18:18story. So I feel like even in spring,
- 1:18:19there's a lot. And he even says at the end when
- 1:18:21he's really sick and they're they're looking at the flowers
- 1:18:23blooming. He's like, this is a perfect
- 1:18:25time to write poetry. You know, beautiful.
- 1:18:28Yeah. So stop and look at the flowers.
- 1:18:30Look at the. Look at the.
- 1:18:30Flowers yeah, he wants to write poetry about that so I I feel
- 1:18:33like that is the spring moments for me and then summer.
- 1:18:37I think it's wonderful to to connect him to being a person
- 1:18:42who absorbs the heat for his family because in the summer,
- 1:18:46it's when their baby dies. And I feel like that was such a
- 1:18:50horrible, horrific moment for them.
- 1:18:52But he really did take a lot of that heat because he blamed
- 1:18:56himself a lot about, you know, as being the reason why they
- 1:18:59lost her son. So I feel like that was a moment
- 1:19:02there when I was like, OK, he can.
- 1:19:03He'll take the heat for his family, which we would want all,
- 1:19:07you know, any good man to do for his family.
- 1:19:10Yeah. And then like in winter, I
- 1:19:12really thought about, well, let me say fall, Fall I would say
- 1:19:15just being the breadwinner, you know what I mean?
- 1:19:17I kind of think of fall as like harvest and him being big on
- 1:19:20catching fish, like he's a fisherman, you know, bringing in
- 1:19:23the catch. You know, that kind of made me
- 1:19:25think about the idea of always bringing the harvest for his
- 1:19:27family. And then winter, obviously for
- 1:19:29me was when he got sick and how that was really a cold time for
- 1:19:34obviously him, but his family as well, because soon but
- 1:19:37definitely his children. I feel like really were I fought
- 1:19:42with them about how they treated their father.
- 1:19:45Oh my goodness, they they would they got to me at times, But I
- 1:19:49really feel like in that time they really had a moment of
- 1:19:51like, wait a minute, He was one of the best of the best.
- 1:19:55Even the moment with a soon not as soon when I keep forgetting
- 1:19:58the daughter's name. Yes, which they're on the boat
- 1:20:01When? After she has the big breakup
- 1:20:03from her. Oh my God.
- 1:20:04Fiance and they go on that boat with he takes he wakes up early
- 1:20:08in the morning brings her on the boat with him and she's like you
- 1:20:11do this all the time like I can't believe you wake up this
- 1:20:13early like what are you doing? Don't you ever want to sleep in?
- 1:20:16And he's like, yeah, of course, who doesn't want to sleep in?
- 1:20:19But he's like, but I think that what gets me up in the morning
- 1:20:22is like, oh, if I get up early, that made me that my family gets
- 1:20:26to sleep in a little bit longer. So that's what gets me up in the
- 1:20:29morning. And then like she's looking at
- 1:20:31him like he is her actual son. And that would make me realize
- 1:20:34like he is their son in a way, like.
- 1:20:37You're incidentally touching on the most beautiful shot of the.
- 1:20:40Most beautiful shot that we got. Rice.
- 1:20:42Yeah, the sunrise scene. So I just really loved his
- 1:20:45character and I loved how he embodied, I feel like one of the
- 1:20:51biggest motifs of the entire drama, which was the seasons
- 1:20:54changing, the seasons going, seasons moving and and being a
- 1:20:57constant. Like the seasons, seasons are
- 1:21:00always going to come and go. And he was like that.
- 1:21:02Like he was a constant until he wasn't.
- 1:21:05Get out I'm. Sorry.
- 1:21:08I forgot to say this in the non spoiler section but fuck this
- 1:21:11show. What the fuck?
- 1:21:14Because this ending really shook me up and it shook the tree, you
- 1:21:21know what I'm saying? Shook the tangerine tree.
- 1:21:24Yes, it did. I really thought he was going to
- 1:21:26die earlier. I don't.
- 1:21:28I got spoiled. That's why I really stopped this
- 1:21:30drama a year. I heard he was going to die, he
- 1:21:33got sick, he was going to get sick and die.
- 1:21:35And I said, you know what, I'm good.
- 1:21:36I'm checking out we. Don't need to finish this we.
- 1:21:38Don't need to finish this. So watching it again, knowing
- 1:21:41the ending, that was horrific for me.
- 1:21:44It was so bad. Like how they were treating him.
- 1:21:46That's why I guess when I was like the his children, the way
- 1:21:48that they were treating him, I was just like, guys, he's not
- 1:21:51going to be here with you guys for much longer.
- 1:21:53Get it together. Yeah, Yeah, it was hard.
- 1:21:56I was pretty mean as a teenager. I will say I'm not anymore.
- 1:22:03I think that despite some of my resting bitch face, RBFI am the
- 1:22:09nice sister. OK?
- 1:22:10Like, my sister is definitely the mean sister and I am the
- 1:22:13nice sister, but the way that I treat my parents now is
- 1:22:19infinitely different than how I treated them 20 years ago.
- 1:22:22Yeah, I think that's tough. To put a mirror up to your
- 1:22:27antics when you're younger and you don't care is tough, I
- 1:22:32think, for many people to see how you've undervalued and
- 1:22:36underappreciated your parents, who have had a way tougher life
- 1:22:40than you have. It's really hard to think back
- 1:22:45to all the times that the daughter was mean to the death,
- 1:22:48just seemingly so cruel to him, impatient with him, whining and
- 1:22:56bratty. And the moment that he goes to
- 1:22:59wake her up early, I'm like, Oh my God, I've totally done this
- 1:23:02before. I'm like, oh, what is it?
- 1:23:04Leave me alone. It's early.
- 1:23:07And I remember in the show she said she was tired.
- 1:23:09And part of what? She was, she said that she was
- 1:23:12able to sleep well for the first time in a long time.
- 1:23:15I think. Yeah, she was.
- 1:23:17I mean, she was just heartbroken.
- 1:23:18I think that was the only that's.
- 1:23:19The thing is that she was depressed after her, she was
- 1:23:21depressed breakup. But what have you been doing all
- 1:23:23day? Eating nothing.
- 1:23:26She was eating constantly. Yes, she was.
- 1:23:29So it was, it was real tough for me to swallow that pill of I've
- 1:23:33done that, but also why have we all been like that?
- 1:23:38He is such a key factor in stitching her back together.
- 1:23:44Like even the the wedding. The wedding.
- 1:23:47Get out bro. The wedding, Oh my gosh, the way
- 1:23:50he cried, the way he cried, Oh my gosh, Carol, I was, I was, I
- 1:23:55was boohooing like him. No seriously, it was so bad I
- 1:24:01was the same. Way so funny.
- 1:24:02I was like, as soon I was like, stop.
- 1:24:04Crying. That's Carol.
- 1:24:08What I like is that she she hated crying at weddings.
- 1:24:12She wanted to play it cool. She was trying to get fresh with
- 1:24:15it and be above the emotions of her wedding day.
- 1:24:17And the dad was like, if you want to turn back right now,
- 1:24:21I'll take we can leave right now.
- 1:24:23Are you sure? And, you know, double and triple
- 1:24:25checking just like a dad. And she has this whole narration
- 1:24:30of, like, her whole life. He was there with a net to catch
- 1:24:34her if she falls from this tightrope.
- 1:24:36And he was the backup plan, looking out for her, supporting
- 1:24:39her all her life. And she just starts to ball
- 1:24:42balls all the way down the aisle.
- 1:24:44Yeah, I lost it. The moment I lost it was when
- 1:24:48This is so freaking rude. They show his perspective and he
- 1:24:53sees a little girl walking. Down with the wedding dress thug
- 1:24:58off. Walking down with the wedding
- 1:25:00dress, all of the stages of her life is what he still sees her
- 1:25:04as, this little girl. And then she throws this singer
- 1:25:09in here at the end of episode 13.
- 1:25:11The narration is the day before my dad passed.
- 1:25:16The day before my dad. I told him, Dad, I'm sorry, I'm
- 1:25:19sorry. I must have said it 100 times
- 1:25:21over. That's when Dad told me there's
- 1:25:22nothing to be sorry about. From the day you were born, I
- 1:25:25was already in heaven. Yep, Yep, Yep, I have that
- 1:25:30written down. There on this show beautiful Toy
- 1:25:34Story 3 in it. Do you guys have other things
- 1:25:37you want to add for the dad? We can talk about episode 16 if
- 1:25:40you want. Do we?
- 1:25:43Do we talk about? Do we want to?
- 1:25:44I guess we could talk first about his relationship with the
- 1:25:47son and I guess both a son's relationship with the son and
- 1:25:52his relationship with his son and how he sold his boat to bail
- 1:25:58the son out of jail. And how the son didn't feel like
- 1:26:02he was loved as much as Gum young.
- 1:26:06To me though, it did feel like they love their first born more
- 1:26:09than. Yeah, no, to be absolutely for
- 1:26:12real. They played favorites and the
- 1:26:14favorite child was the daughter Kumiyong.
- 1:26:17Yeah, I also really have to say it was to me a standard case of
- 1:26:23middle child syndrome. He's technically was their
- 1:26:25middle child. So I feel like that's where this
- 1:26:27really came from, they as a middle child.
- 1:26:30I'm always very, very, you know, keen on how they treat middle
- 1:26:34children and stories. And I was like, This is why he's
- 1:26:37getting treated this way. He's the one that he's the
- 1:26:40middle child. So yeah, he definitely was not
- 1:26:43their favorite. I mean, I don't say he wasn't
- 1:26:45their favorite, but they leaned a little bit more towards young
- 1:26:49and she took the heat for that. She said it herself.
- 1:26:53She's like, I have to be the perfect, you know, I have to do
- 1:26:56everything for everybody. I I'm the eldest daughter.
- 1:26:59So she took the heat from it. But I definitely feel like they
- 1:27:02lean a little bit more towards her for sure.
- 1:27:04So he he had a leg to stand on. I think he.
- 1:27:06Had Wow to stand on. Do you know what?
- 1:27:08I have a totally different perspective.
- 1:27:10I have very little sympathy for the brother and I'm an eldest
- 1:27:13child. That's why.
- 1:27:14That's why. That's why because you're the
- 1:27:17eldest. As a middle child, he had a.
- 1:27:18Leg, I'm like dead up. Stop whining.
- 1:27:21No. He was, he was ignored.
- 1:27:23He was no one even cared about him.
- 1:27:25He would get leftovers like they were too busy worried about
- 1:27:30their golden eldest child and mourning the death of their
- 1:27:33youngest. Like he was just there in the
- 1:27:36middle. Like it makes sense.
- 1:27:38I I think he had a leg. Oh wow, so you are very
- 1:27:41sympathetic toward this. I mean, he may be so angry a lot
- 1:27:45that like don't, don't let me. No, I just kind of mean in the
- 1:27:48the way that he was resentful toward them for these
- 1:27:53infractions that just piled up throughout his life.
- 1:27:56I do. I do think he had right.
- 1:27:57That's why I really loved the scene when he you know, after
- 1:28:00they they think they've lost him cuz he he he gets on a boat like
- 1:28:04he. Gets on a deep sea fishing boat
- 1:28:06and they just go over the deep end like they go over the.
- 1:28:08Family, they lose it, but when she, you know, when Asan, you
- 1:28:11know, finds him and she's like, you know, mad at him, but then
- 1:28:14she also starts apologizing. I really felt that I'm going to
- 1:28:18be honest again, like the mother just admitting like, I get it.
- 1:28:21It's my fault. I was the one that was giving
- 1:28:22you leftovers. I was the one that basically
- 1:28:25ignored you. Like, I get it and I really
- 1:28:27appreciated that apology. So I.
- 1:28:30Wow, I. Did.
- 1:28:31And it's not the first time she apologized to him.
- 1:28:34Because when the baby brother dies and the kid is like, I'm
- 1:28:38not talking to you because you're angry.
- 1:28:41And because I left my baby brother and that's when she sort
- 1:28:45of comes to and she's like, Oh my God, I can't put this burden
- 1:28:50on my kid. And she starts apologizing to
- 1:28:53him. But I do think that their first
- 1:28:57was so precious golden child. Precious.
- 1:29:01They say it all the time, how precious she is.
- 1:29:04Precious to them, so they couldn't.
- 1:29:07Like, I don't know. As much as they wanted it to be
- 1:29:11equitable, it just wasn't. It was not equitable.
- 1:29:15And this is tough for me to understand because my family, at
- 1:29:19least me and my sister, there are no favorites that my parents
- 1:29:22don't have a favorite between us.
- 1:29:23But my father was the favorite child from the grandparents that
- 1:29:29I've been referring to, you know, that was their favorite
- 1:29:33child. And so I grew up with my
- 1:29:34grandparents and I just the way that they treated him was
- 1:29:37different. The way that they valued his
- 1:29:38opinion was different. And I mean, in that respect, I'm
- 1:29:42like, what gifts? What is that?
- 1:29:45Because I wasn't raised like that in our household.
- 1:29:49They got good advice, you know Asen was there with the aunties
- 1:29:53all day long the genios and they 1 specifically told her in an
- 1:29:58early episode do not play favorites with your children.
- 1:30:02They will remember it and hold. It against you they will.
- 1:30:07And I'm like bitch, wake up, fix this now.
- 1:30:12Yeah, but I think also the the her being a favorite was easy
- 1:30:16too, because the the family itself is quite matriarchal.
- 1:30:20Like they really do favor like Ason runs the she wears the
- 1:30:24pants. Like she, whatever she needs,
- 1:30:26whatever she wants, you know it's going to take place because
- 1:30:29that's how you know. That's how my grandmother.
- 1:30:32Was so, I mean, I definitely think that was easy for them to
- 1:30:35favor the daughter. I think that was going to happen
- 1:30:38no matter what. I think it was because, and also
- 1:30:40she was the splitting image of ASON.
- 1:30:43She was ASON. She was IU again.
- 1:30:45You know I mean Part 2. Part 2.
- 1:30:48So I feel like, I think she was just.
- 1:30:50And she also studied English. Her mother wanted to be a writer
- 1:30:54the whole time. I feel like she was putting a
- 1:30:55lot on her daughter to be her, lived in the world.
- 1:31:00And it was. Yeah, it was.
- 1:31:03Absolutely put They put all of their hopes and dreams on the
- 1:31:06daughter Kumyong and they didn't put any expectations or any
- 1:31:11responsibility on the middle child, the little brother.
- 1:31:15And she in that moment when the Henyo auntie is like, you can't
- 1:31:20play favourites with your children babe.
- 1:31:22Her rebuttal to that is well, if only he was better.
- 1:31:27If only he didn't do all the shit.
- 1:31:29If only he wasn't stealing the the.
- 1:31:32Little. What are they?
- 1:31:33Off the cars, off the cars, Like the name plates off the cars and
- 1:31:38stuff like that. And selling them to kids at
- 1:31:40school. Like if only he wasn't so
- 1:31:42delinquent in every way I wouldn't have to be on his ass
- 1:31:46so. Much.
- 1:31:46Yeah, but he was worried about money.
- 1:31:48That was one of his big. He was hustling.
- 1:31:50Well, he was hustling and and even when they get he got older,
- 1:31:53obviously that was still a big thing because that was a lot of
- 1:31:55his contention with his father was like, hey, you, you know,
- 1:31:59you never had enough. You just never had enough for
- 1:32:01us. And so, of course, you know, I
- 1:32:04felt the pressure to make money. It was from when he was young, I
- 1:32:07feel like. So I do.
- 1:32:09Feel like, yeah, he was always trying to take shortcuts.
- 1:32:11He was always trying to get rich quick.
- 1:32:13And The thing is, that's not really how that works.
- 1:32:17No. Like, sorry to say that kind of,
- 1:32:19I think what he wanted was wealth.
- 1:32:22Yes. What he hoped for and dreamed
- 1:32:24for for the family was wealth. Yeah.
- 1:32:27And wealth is measured in different ways, and you can see
- 1:32:32that when you juxtapose their family with the other family,
- 1:32:36you're talking about your favorite, your other favorite.
- 1:32:38Character Sangil? Yeah.
- 1:32:41The other crabby, shitty Captain Pusangil, his family is so
- 1:32:49unhealthy and despite having money, they did not have the
- 1:32:54same relational wealth and love that Asun's family had that
- 1:33:00Kwangchik fostered in their home.
- 1:33:03The brother, the little brother, did not see that.
- 1:33:06No, he didn't see all the ways that they were rich.
- 1:33:08At all. And a son, a son did because she
- 1:33:11would constantly say everyone is jealous of me and the man that
- 1:33:17you are from me. But the kid, you barely see that
- 1:33:22with him until pretty much episode 16.
- 1:33:27Yeah, right. It took him a while to come
- 1:33:30around, but then like the I the rich moment also came up on the
- 1:33:34boat. Cuz I didn't, I think Kwang Shik
- 1:33:36was apologizing to his daughter at the time about how he's like
- 1:33:40just sorry that she was born into their family basically.
- 1:33:44And she was like, you know, whatever.
- 1:33:46Absolutely not. Like, if I was, you know, born
- 1:33:48again, she said something about, like, I would choose you again.
- 1:33:51Yeah. And I think you are the richest,
- 1:33:53you know? And he holds on to that.
- 1:33:55Like, she said that I am rich, even though monetarily that has
- 1:33:59never been the case. But she does say that.
- 1:34:02I think she would say that when he brings it up to her again and
- 1:34:05towards the end. And she's like, I didn't really
- 1:34:06mean that. Like, try to, like, pull it
- 1:34:09back. And I was like, no, no, it's out
- 1:34:11there. You said it.
- 1:34:13I think the little brother, just to wrap up his story, super,
- 1:34:18super annoying. He made wrong choice after wrong
- 1:34:20choice. But when he hits rock bottom and
- 1:34:23his dad has to sell the boat, Kwanchik has to sell his beloved
- 1:34:26boat. It's a part of him, his
- 1:34:28identity. He starts selling acorn Jelly
- 1:34:31and sticky rice cakes out on the street at night and everybody is
- 1:34:36like giving him the same advice. First of all, buying his
- 1:34:41product. That was great that I actually
- 1:34:44loved that part. And everyone's like you.
- 1:34:45You need to take better care of your dad.
- 1:34:47Hey, treat your dad nice. Yeah, what caught me from that
- 1:34:51moment is like I it only hit me in hindsight.
- 1:34:53That and I guess the drama also doesn't show it until the the
- 1:34:57end of that moment that it was Quang Shik who's giving the
- 1:35:00money to the neighbors. He told the he told the other
- 1:35:05grandfather, yes, the in law the asshole.
- 1:35:09Yeah, yes, he told that guy, hey, why don't you pay off the
- 1:35:13entire neighborhood to buy your son-in-law, my son's sticky rice
- 1:35:17cakes or acorn Jelly or whatever it was because he's struggling.
- 1:35:22Like you're going to regret it if you don't help them out.
- 1:35:25But he wants them to work. He's like, I want you to work,
- 1:35:28but I also am not really, you know, But I'm still feeding into
- 1:35:31it in a way. I was like, I love going chick.
- 1:35:33He does. He's just the best.
- 1:35:35Yeah, he's the best. Such a sweetie.
- 1:35:37So episode 16 rolls around and they pull the rug out from
- 1:35:40everybody because he is struggling and not with
- 1:35:43rheumatoid arthritis and little aches and pains.
- 1:35:47He has multiple myeloma which is a cancer of the plasma cells and
- 1:35:52the line. 24 sessions of chemotherapy melted the steel
- 1:35:56heart. Tears, tears.
- 1:36:01The line Dad was like the sea. We all relied on him to live.
- 1:36:04Tears, tears. When he finally passes the line
- 1:36:09Dad slept in for the first time. First time I was like, wrap it
- 1:36:13up, wrap it up. We are stressed just thinking
- 1:36:18about this final episode. He had saved every penny that
- 1:36:23the daughter Kumyong had sent them over the years.
- 1:36:26She had sent, she said, CN¥100,000, which is I guess a
- 1:36:30little less than 100 bucks every month to them.
- 1:36:32Ever since she started working. He never spent any of it, put it
- 1:36:36all in a savings account and she got it back after he passed.
- 1:36:38Are you fucking kidding me? See that's the moment that got
- 1:36:43me. Everything before I was like, oh
- 1:36:47I've been, I thought you would die in like 5 episodes ago.
- 1:36:52I was waiting for it to happen. And so when it did I was like
- 1:36:55OK, finally it has happened. But the money thing?
- 1:37:00No. Yeah.
- 1:37:03Damn, it got me. You know, what got me was we
- 1:37:06mentioned Yum Heron before and how we wanted more of her.
- 1:37:10She circles back in the final episode.
- 1:37:12She is the publishing editor who's reviewing the manuscript
- 1:37:18when that reveal happened. And you can see they show all of
- 1:37:22this, these family photos and experiences that she's had in
- 1:37:26her life that inform who she might be.
- 1:37:30They couple it with all of these flashbacks of our female lead
- 1:37:34with the mom. Those few episodes that we had
- 1:37:37are at the beginning. And they show that it's her.
- 1:37:40And I lost it. I lost it that she got the
- 1:37:46second life where everything happened for her.
- 1:37:49You know, she got that education.
- 1:37:51She wasn't a hanging. She's not working in the sea in
- 1:37:53this hazardous job. Yeah.
- 1:37:57And she's got a desk job. You know what?
- 1:37:59Yeah, I agree. And the other thing that hit me
- 1:38:03was just how silently the Henyos just disappeared.
- 1:38:11Do we want to talk about like the village takes a village to
- 1:38:14raise a child aspect of the show and the aunties?
- 1:38:16Yeah, yeah. I really appreciated seeing
- 1:38:20that. And it was sort of when you look
- 1:38:22at a son, when you look at her and giving birth to Gum young
- 1:38:27and giving birth to her kids. She really had a village taking
- 1:38:32care of the kids alongside her. And there was a scene where she
- 1:38:37didn't have rice and this old neighbor couple would come, put
- 1:38:41rice in their kitchen for them and every morning.
- 1:38:46And then they're at the wedding for the daughter, Kum Young and
- 1:38:49I Girl, this whole show got me toe up.
- 1:38:52All right, keep going. So just that aspect and contrast
- 1:38:58that with when Gum Young has her daughter and she only has her
- 1:39:03mom to come and help her out, that made me feel like, oh,
- 1:39:08we're losing recipes. Yeah.
- 1:39:12We're losing recipes because when mom comes to the house and
- 1:39:17her granddaughter is on the floor screaming and yelling, the
- 1:39:20food is spilled on the floor and Gum Young is having a meltdown.
- 1:39:26I was just like, if you had your aunties, if you had your
- 1:39:30village, maybe you would not have been feeding this kid, You
- 1:39:34wouldn't have this. There's sort of this loneliness
- 1:39:38that comes with not having the community around you when you
- 1:39:42have a kid. So I appreciate the aunties.
- 1:39:46I appreciated how they kept the mom alive by constantly talking
- 1:39:53about her and look at her daughter and and ISN's mom.
- 1:39:58Look at her. By now your mom would be saying
- 1:40:00this or your mom would be doing this or I think that really
- 1:40:04helped ISN. Not intentionally close off the
- 1:40:09memory of her mom so she was always able to talk about her
- 1:40:14because she was very much alive to everyone else.
- 1:40:19I appreciated that. I also loved that I loved all of
- 1:40:24that. The the one thing like going
- 1:40:26back to you, you mentioned in Carol the scene with the you
- 1:40:30know, the the neighbors, the elderly couple were giving the
- 1:40:33family. They were the landlords.
- 1:40:34Yeah, they were landlords, Yeah. Giving the, you know, giving
- 1:40:36just the right amount of rice. So she wasn't good like, so she
- 1:40:39didn't think she was like, wait, did I see that fishes?
- 1:40:42So they're suspicious. I love that fish in.
- 1:40:43Low situation here. My, but my favorite quote I
- 1:40:48think actually comes from that moment that's that couple when I
- 1:40:53think he says something about let me find it, he said.
- 1:40:55Like have you ever seen a woman diver or hanyo diving on her own
- 1:41:01and he's like when you're struggling to breathe in the
- 1:41:03dark waters, need to stay close to others to survive or fear
- 1:41:07will grip your heart and you won't make it.
- 1:41:10No one can live on their own. Go together with others.
- 1:41:14And I just think that permeated throughout the entire drama that
- 1:41:18concepts of needing others go with go together with others.
- 1:41:22Because even this, I keep going back to my favorite scene, which
- 1:41:24is the boat scene, obviously with the with Gong shake.
- 1:41:27But like, he says the simplest thing about and she's like,
- 1:41:29aren't you afraid of being on the boat at night?
- 1:41:31You know, I mean, not night. Well, you know, really in the
- 1:41:33dark. And he's like, of course it's
- 1:41:35scary, you know? But he's like, I see the lights
- 1:41:38of the other boats in the water and knowing that they're out
- 1:41:41there kind of just as lonely as I am makes me feel like that's a
- 1:41:45word, you know, it's a real word.
- 1:41:47Like I, I. Don't do life alone.
- 1:41:48Lately don't do life alone like people need people like that's a
- 1:41:52real thing and I and I think that's what the village is like.
- 1:41:55It takes the village, the you know, the family and, and I
- 1:41:58definitely and even like they stayed in the drama.
- 1:42:00I think they say take a village to raise a child and a village
- 1:42:03to save a life. I think that's what they say cuz
- 1:42:05she felt like they the village saved her life after her son had
- 1:42:08passed. Yeah, Oh my God.
- 1:42:10You know, let's talk about that for a second.
- 1:42:13I was going to say really quickly, Speaking of the middle
- 1:42:15child at that scene when they were, it was some flashback when
- 1:42:19after her son had passed and she doesn't realize she had like
- 1:42:23this aha moment that she's been like living and like a zombie.
- 1:42:28And then she realizes that her son, our middle child, is like
- 1:42:32eating. And she's like, where is he?
- 1:42:34Where is he getting food from? She's like looking around.
- 1:42:36Yeah, she's like, I didn't do that.
- 1:42:37And then she goes over into like her little, I guess little
- 1:42:40cupboard kitchen area. And there's just like food left
- 1:42:44up where from all the village. And I just thought that was also
- 1:42:48stand out moment for her, like, hey, it takes a village.
- 1:42:51It takes, yeah. I I lost it again at the exact
- 1:42:54moment that you're referring to when she goes in the kitchen on
- 1:42:56her last day of catatonic depression and her kids were
- 1:43:01fed. There was overflowing food and
- 1:43:02fish, even canola flowers in the outdoor pantry.
- 1:43:06And it's just this abundance from this the village who made
- 1:43:10sure that her kids never went hungry.
- 1:43:12And she never forgot that kindness that everybody stepped
- 1:43:16up when she needed that time to grieve as a mother.
- 1:43:19And there was a lot about that episode that made me cry.
- 1:43:22I mean, the little boy drowning and dying really didn't see that
- 1:43:27coming. Whoa, yeah, talk about reason to
- 1:43:30stop a drama for a year. Yeah.
- 1:43:32Literally. Literally.
- 1:43:35I did see that coming because when he said hug me, no.
- 1:43:39First off, when he dropped the candy, I was like, oh,
- 1:43:43something's bad. That's that omen.
- 1:43:45It's an omen. Yeah, it's an old school omen.
- 1:43:49I thought Crunchy was going to die because it was a storm.
- 1:43:54So I was like oh Crunchy is going to die.
- 1:43:55And then when he said hug me and she pushes him aside because Gum
- 1:44:01Young might have had an accident.
- 1:44:04I was like oh watch this kid get missing.
- 1:44:07She starts running. She tells the drunk.
- 1:44:09I don't know if she was drunk, but.
- 1:44:11I think she was at least napping, yeah.
- 1:44:15Take care of my kids and and she runs off.
- 1:44:18I'm like, you're gonna lose one of these kids.
- 1:44:21And I suspect that it would be the little one because that
- 1:44:25moment of hug me and you did not deliver it.
- 1:44:29The regret. The regret is gonna eat you up
- 1:44:32so. But I loved how she would always
- 1:44:35put a bowl of food and candy for him.
- 1:44:38Yeah, the bowl of peas with rice and the dish of candies for the
- 1:44:41bowl. I love that.
- 1:44:44I love that. I also loved and this is just
- 1:44:47something they did throughout the drama as far as like like
- 1:44:49playing with time and stuff. This.
- 1:44:51I love the dream sequences or the the kind of sequences of
- 1:44:55seeing someone from the past that's not really their kind of
- 1:44:58moments like. I thought these were well done
- 1:45:00too. Well done, very well done.
- 1:45:01And I think as soon one that really got me was when she sees
- 1:45:05her mother again after they just when they decide to move house
- 1:45:09and she's like saying goodbye to this house that, you know, her
- 1:45:11mother was in her, she lost her child in.
- 1:45:13And she's like, Oh my gosh, this is a big moment.
- 1:45:16And she has this stream where she sees her mom in there and in
- 1:45:19the next room and she's sitting and talking to her mom.
- 1:45:21Like I don't sequences in any time.
- 1:45:24I watch them usually. And dramas like always get me
- 1:45:26when someone's like talking to someone who has passed already
- 1:45:28and they're like having a conversation with them, like
- 1:45:30they're there. It breaks me down completely.
- 1:45:34And I think there was this moment with her mom.
- 1:45:36It's like telling her or asking her like, why don't you ever
- 1:45:39talk about your your son? Like, why don't you, why don't
- 1:45:42you talk to Guang Shiken? Why don't you guys actually
- 1:45:44discuss like the pain that you're both obviously feeling?
- 1:45:46And she's like, I can't do it. She just tells you like, I
- 1:45:49cannot do it. I can't imagine like opening
- 1:45:52that up because that's how I keep going.
- 1:45:54She's like me ignoring it, me basically forgetting it is how
- 1:45:58I'm able to keep existing every day.
- 1:46:00And it was just heartbreaking. And her like showing this image
- 1:46:03of like her mom looking at her with this pity of like I, my
- 1:46:06daughter is in pain really hurt me.
- 1:46:10Like watching the mothers see their daughters in pain was one
- 1:46:13of the hardest, hardest moments for me for sure.
- 1:46:16Do you remember when as soon as mom runs after her because of
- 1:46:22that child trafficking? Yes.
- 1:46:24Girl, yeah. Yes, the mother's In Sync.
- 1:46:28Oh my gosh, I. I mean, this whole show is a
- 1:46:32love letter to mothers specifically, even even though
- 1:46:38their fathers, even though Kwang Shik is such a stellar, amazing
- 1:46:41grief like that. The Mothers and the mothers
- 1:46:45mothers is really the heart and soul of the show from episode 1.
- 1:46:52And I think they did an amazing job of showing just to wrap up
- 1:46:57the conversation we were just having of showing grief and the
- 1:47:01pain of losing a child. And I cannot say that I have any
- 1:47:06children or have lost any children, thankfully.
- 1:47:08But I remember what my grandmother sounded like when we
- 1:47:11told her that my aunt, her daughter had passed away.
- 1:47:15I've never heard a sound like that before.
- 1:47:18And so to see Asin going through these stages of grief and
- 1:47:25saying, Oh, my, you know, he's cold while she's holding his
- 1:47:28body. I remember taking my grandmother
- 1:47:31to see my aunt's body in the Hospice and her saying she's
- 1:47:36cold. And it was very guttural and raw
- 1:47:41in a way that I related to, unfortunately, in my own life.
- 1:47:46And I wonder if there's any parents listening who can even
- 1:47:52share their story, let alone be reminded of that pain.
- 1:47:57Watching when life gives you Tangerines and this is
- 1:48:01heartbreaking to say the least. Yeah.
- 1:48:04And yeah. And there's also something to
- 1:48:06the the character, I mean, a son's grandmother, her father's
- 1:48:12mother and their connection because she lost that her son.
- 1:48:16Yes. That was also really beautiful
- 1:48:18to me because like her mom and that moment, like I was just on
- 1:48:21the dream sequence of her, you know, her mom being like, you
- 1:48:24need to basically open the wound and address the, the pain and
- 1:48:28she's like, I can't do it. But then that scene when she she
- 1:48:31visits her grandmother and her grandmother only remembers her.
- 1:48:35Like she doesn't remember everybody else, but she
- 1:48:36remembers that she's her son's daughter.
- 1:48:39It's funny like that. Yes.
- 1:48:40And then she she breaks. She tells her like I know.
- 1:48:43I know how. You, I know, you feel she's
- 1:48:45like, I know exactly. How she didn't even say what it
- 1:48:48was. She didn't say what it was.
- 1:48:50She just said. I know how you feel.
- 1:48:52She's like not being able to say it.
- 1:48:54And I was like, say what? You know this like say their
- 1:48:56name, names of their dead children basically.
- 1:48:58And so then when she hears her say that, she breaks down and
- 1:49:01cries in her lap and she looks like a little girl.
- 1:49:04And it just was so back to mothers on mothers on mothers.
- 1:49:08Like I just, I broke down. I broke down.
- 1:49:13When you said the name, I remembered when Crunchy cut to
- 1:49:16write his son's name. Stop it, Carol.
- 1:49:20For the death certificate. I don't.
- 1:49:22And he was on his knees, on his knees in this public place, just
- 1:49:28bawling. I wow, I hated it.
- 1:49:32I hated it. I hate it so much.
- 1:49:34I hate it. The avoidant nature of their
- 1:49:37grief and how they never talked about their son in the last 20
- 1:49:42years was absolutely buck wild to me.
- 1:49:45But they do round it out because they go visit the grave.
- 1:49:48Grave together. I'm getting emotional again
- 1:49:52because that was so beautiful and he's.
- 1:49:54Sitting there playing with toys on the ground?
- 1:49:57Come on. I hate it, I hate it.
- 1:49:59And then it also got me because this is right before we start,
- 1:50:03we find out about him being sick, being Guangxik being sick.
- 1:50:07And so he's she asked him like, oh, she said something about
- 1:50:11like, oh, but you know, we're going to get to see him again
- 1:50:13soon at some point, you know, like as in them passing on to
- 1:50:16see him in heaven. And he's like, oh, I don't want
- 1:50:18to see him when I die because I was just I was like, this is
- 1:50:22disgusting. He was like, I don't want to
- 1:50:24disgusting. I don't want to see him when I
- 1:50:26die because I, you know, basically like feeling guilty.
- 1:50:29The fact that his son was alone this whole time, probably
- 1:50:32missing his parents. And he's like, I don't I feel
- 1:50:34guilty seeing him at this point, even after I die.
- 1:50:38And then next, you know, he's dying in the next couple
- 1:50:40episodes. I can't this is great.
- 1:50:41This is just. I literally cannot.
- 1:50:46I loved when he saw kids who would be about the same age as
- 1:50:51his son. I forgot about that.
- 1:50:55I think I blocked that out intentionally.
- 1:50:58Like he was really working through his grief in his own
- 1:51:02way. And.
- 1:51:03While Asin was very much like, I can't even look at kids who are
- 1:51:08the same age as my son at the time that was.
- 1:51:13That was good. I'm definitely choking up.
- 1:51:15Yeah, I forgot all about that. I'd like to bring my score to a
- 1:51:20four. Just a little bit, right?
- 1:51:25Now that we're embedded. Yeah, when you feel that much,
- 1:51:28you can't help. You can't take take it away from
- 1:51:31the drama like it makes you feel that much.
- 1:51:34I got to give you some points. I got to give you some points.
- 1:51:37Beautiful. So there's a lot on mothers in
- 1:51:40this. They're flawed, right?
- 1:51:42All of these mothers are not perfect, but they get something
- 1:51:45right because the kids turn out okay.
- 1:51:48Yeah, they get something right. You know what's funny?
- 1:51:51When each whether it was the grandmother, the mother, as soon
- 1:51:56each generation is looking at them deal with the same
- 1:52:01challenges they dealt with when they were kids and they're like
- 1:52:04look at you. Who's?
- 1:52:06Talking now you're dealing with this.
- 1:52:08Now your kid has colored her hair.
- 1:52:13I love that. I loved those moments of levity
- 1:52:17because it it just made it seem like, see, I wasn't crazy trying
- 1:52:23to discipline you. Now look at you.
- 1:52:25Yeah. Train up a child.
- 1:52:28Let's bring it down a little bit and talk about the pop culture
- 1:52:32elements in this show. I had a fun time with the Ghost
- 1:52:37release, you know, with Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, and they
- 1:52:41start playing Unchained Melody in the show.
- 1:52:44I was like, Oh my God, that was fun.
- 1:52:47Kim Sono enters the chat in episode 9.
- 1:52:52I believe he is basically a poor starving artist who is doing
- 1:52:58these custom movie billboards for this theater in town.
- 1:53:03He is doing a billboard for the I think the movie is Pyong Kong
- 1:53:07Soul. And I looked up this movie and I
- 1:53:10was like, Oh my God, I got to find a copy of this.
- 1:53:11So this is about the South. It's a South Korean historical
- 1:53:16drama about a beautiful and sexually skilled woman in the
- 1:53:20chosen era who becomes disabled after a horrific injury, leading
- 1:53:24her to retreat to the mountains, where she is eventually found by
- 1:53:28a man who seeks her out. The film follows her as she
- 1:53:30navigates her new life in isolation and her encounter with
- 1:53:33Pyeong Kang so, who sees her as a perfect match.
- 1:53:36So she basically finds love even after this horrific accident and
- 1:53:40she is a scarred sexually experienced women or whatever.
- 1:53:46It's a classic Korean novel. I'm like, I got to find this
- 1:53:50movie somehow. This sound crazy.
- 1:53:53Do you guys have any other pop culture elements that you wanted
- 1:53:57to bring up? I do want to jump in and just
- 1:53:59say something about that little bit of that movie specifically.
- 1:54:02Every time I'm now that I watch dramas, they're they're set in
- 1:54:06that time like this, the 70s, eighties.
- 1:54:08Yeah, I am always now thinking about Emma because I feel like
- 1:54:11film during that time, it's just like it was.
- 1:54:14I mean, that blew my mind. Like what film was during that
- 1:54:17time in Korea? Because it just goes against
- 1:54:20everything I think about, I think about Korea.
- 1:54:22So that's a little sign up for me.
- 1:54:24I did feel like I felt a little bit more knowledgeable about
- 1:54:27that, the kind of movie theater era and this drama because of
- 1:54:31AIMA, which is weird because I watched that one.
- 1:54:34It was after When Life Gives You Tangerine.
- 1:54:36But then I think for me, a lot of the moments I liked were all
- 1:54:39the drama references. So like a sand glass, they're
- 1:54:42like watching. Sand Glass.
- 1:54:44The, you know, like those are my.
- 1:54:46Were they watching? What is the like?
- 1:54:47Yes, might have been in my heart.
- 1:54:49Autumn in my heart, yes, I was like, I'm eating these little
- 1:54:52little cameo moments. So those are my favorite pop
- 1:54:55reference movies and I do like the music ones, but I feel like
- 1:54:57that was another missed element of this drama was like music.
- 1:55:01Like, I feel like I did not like, what was the music in this
- 1:55:05drama, you know? The OSC was not.
- 1:55:07Not existing, and I felt like that's another missed
- 1:55:10opportunity. For sure.
- 1:55:12Absolutely. There was a jump scare at
- 1:55:14episode 10 with the Bill Clinton clip.
- 1:55:18I did not have sexual. Relations with that woman.
- 1:55:21I was like oh God, wow. Not Clinton, not Epstein files.
- 1:55:25Clinton. The Haasong serial murders are
- 1:55:31happening in the background of Episode 10, and it contributes
- 1:55:36to our female lead being really anxious for her daughter
- 1:55:39Komyong, who's in the big city all alone.
- 1:55:42Herself. There are music moments, like
- 1:55:45you said, HOT. H.
- 1:55:47Is playing Sotegi. Sotegi yelling.
- 1:55:52It's so great the IMF crisis is happening in the late 90s and
- 1:55:56the. Olympics.
- 1:55:58The Olympics. The Olympics are happening.
- 1:56:00FIFA World Cup. 10 minutes by Ehodi He.
- 1:56:05Comes in. He's playing in one of the last
- 1:56:07episodes and I was like, oh, I need to like listen to this
- 1:56:10again because I forgot how much I love this song.
- 1:56:11I. Love it.
- 1:56:13Ivyungun is brought up because there is a production filming up
- 1:56:18the mountain. This is 2003's K Drama.
- 1:56:25Yeah. Yes, starring Ebun and Song
- 1:56:28Hekio and Shorthand Story is about one man's rise through the
- 1:56:33fiercely competitive world of casino gambling as he clashes
- 1:56:36with his rivals over money, success and love.
- 1:56:38Sign me up. Have you seen that show?
- 1:56:42No, I've never seen it. No.
- 1:56:44Have you? Wait, have you guys seen it?
- 1:56:46Yes, perfect. So you would recommend it?
- 1:56:48Yes, absolutely perfect. Yes, absolutely.
- 1:56:52A lot of stuff is happening. I think there was even a
- 1:56:56newspaper clipping and it's Princess Diana.
- 1:57:00Yeah. And I have to say, if this was
- 1:57:03not a Korean production, it was made somewhere in the West,
- 1:57:07there would be an entire episode on Princess Diana.
- 1:57:10It would. And her death, for sure, yeah,
- 1:57:12for sure, yeah. That would have been a whole
- 1:57:14thing. Just like the Hassong serial
- 1:57:15murders are like simmering in an episode.
- 1:57:19Diana would have been a whole thing.
- 1:57:20Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 1:57:22I think the show did a really good job and taking those
- 1:57:26cultural moments and sprinkling them throughout the show so that
- 1:57:31you feel like you're growing with the show or you're seeing
- 1:57:34the characters grow. So yeah, I appreciated those.
- 1:57:38The Clinton one, I was about to pause and send you a voice memo
- 1:57:41because I was like, Oh my God. Don't.
- 1:57:45Don't do that. Did you guys want to talk about
- 1:57:48Kun Myung's two relationships? 2 romantic relationships in this
- 1:57:52show that. 'D be good.
- 1:57:53Yeah, that first guy was trash like.
- 1:57:55He yeah, it was the mom. It was the mom.
- 1:58:00The mom is sunk that battleship so bad.
- 1:58:03I have so many little notes on my reaction to her.
- 1:58:07Didn't the actress pass away last year?
- 1:58:09Did she? I think she might have.
- 1:58:12The actress who played his mom, her first her first fiance.
- 1:58:16Kang Myung Ju. She died, yes.
- 1:58:20Yeah. February 27th.
- 1:58:22Of 2025 yes that's what got me when I was watching her scene at
- 1:58:25the end her last scene when they're showing time passing her
- 1:58:29by and she's like aging sitting on the couch I got really
- 1:58:32emotional watching that because it was like didn't she pass that
- 1:58:35she. Passed away and she was so yeah,
- 1:58:3753. 53 And I mean, and she I mean, it got to me just watching
- 1:58:42her, the time passing her like that character, I was like, it
- 1:58:45made me think about the actress herself.
- 1:58:47So I was just like, oh, this is sad too.
- 1:58:49I was like crying again, you know, just keep crying.
- 1:58:53Carol, did you have thoughts on this first relationship?
- 1:58:55I think the dad sort of he definitely felt threatened or he
- 1:59:00felt jealous or annoyed by the 1st relationship.
- 1:59:04But there was a moment where the guy took a break from military,
- 1:59:09came to her dorm to come meet her and he runs into her and he
- 1:59:13says something and the dad is just like Oh my God this kid is
- 1:59:17me. So I feel like the dad really
- 1:59:20thought that this guy was good for his daughter especially when
- 1:59:26they were meeting the families and the guy's dad was like give
- 1:59:30me scorched rice and a soon not a soon come young stand EC IU.
- 1:59:37That's why you shouldn't do 2 roles exactly but.
- 1:59:40You're just going to confuse all the girlies.
- 1:59:42Don't do. Young starts, you know, ladling,
- 1:59:47using the ladle to take the rice and the dad is giving the guy
- 1:59:52eyes like. What are?
- 1:59:54You doing? Yeah, Like, yeah.
- 1:59:56I love that I loved it. Non verbal acting is my
- 1:59:58favorite. Yeah, he was just trying to tell
- 2:00:01him to get up and that was the difference between him and this
- 2:00:06kid, where this kid would not stand up in the same way that.
- 2:00:12Wanshik did. He was just never going to get
- 2:00:16that from him. Yeah, I particularly loved that
- 2:00:20the mom did not give out the invitations because she's like,
- 2:00:24I raised my daughter. That's boldness.
- 2:00:27I know I'll give her the space to figure it out, but it's not
- 2:00:31going to be this guy. But when she does see Kim Soho's
- 2:00:35character and he comes over for dinner and she's just giggling
- 2:00:40and smiling to herself and she already knows him.
- 2:00:44This is the guy who carried my daughter to the hospital like
- 2:00:47she already knew. And I loved that she gave the
- 2:00:50space to Kim Young to figure it out.
- 2:00:53I agree, I have notes on this family meeting that.
- 2:00:56Happened. In episode 11, that just sent me
- 2:00:59up a wall. They're late and they don't
- 2:01:02apologize. Yeah, I was like strike one.
- 2:01:06The voiceover from ASIN saying it broke my heart to see that my
- 2:01:09daughter had turned out just like me.
- 2:01:12We're shaking her head and in the way that she means it, it's
- 2:01:16because she is this new family. The in laws are demanding that
- 2:01:20she be self sacrificing, subservient, neglectful of
- 2:01:24herself in giving to everyone else.
- 2:01:27It's all around food. Like it's all revolving around
- 2:01:31how she's serving them or not serving them at this function.
- 2:01:34The fiance is just sitting there not helping, not tempering
- 2:01:40anything that his mother is saying, especially now in front
- 2:01:43of her parents. And you're talking about the
- 2:01:46dad, Clanchick, giving him the nod to like, get up and help her
- 2:01:50serve his family. That's not her family yet.
- 2:01:54There's a flashback to when Kwanchik is at the table with
- 2:01:58the kids, his wife, and breaking this traditional hierarchical
- 2:02:02structure of the family unit and their places at the table.
- 2:02:07And how groundbreaking it really was.
- 2:02:10Because this family's still backward.
- 2:02:12This family's still patriarchal. I love what Ehsaan says when she
- 2:02:17gets up to serve the scorched rice.
- 2:02:21She says I couldn't bring myself to teach her.
- 2:02:23She's too precious. She's our darling girl.
- 2:02:25That's why I chose not to teach her.
- 2:02:28Referring to basic housework and cooking, she serves her
- 2:02:32daughter, Kum Young first. Loved her after all that.
- 2:02:37But I I want to pull out, I guess in this the Speaking of
- 2:02:41the the 1st first love this guy that she liked the mother.
- 2:02:45His mother also is presented in a similar fashion as far as like
- 2:02:50she believes, like his life is her life.
- 2:02:53And we talked about a son kind of doing something similar, you
- 2:02:56know, obviously for coming. So I thought that was
- 2:02:58interesting that they even followed that through with this
- 2:03:02mother character that we weren't supposed to like, you know, they
- 2:03:04still kind of brought it back to it's just kind of pitiful that a
- 2:03:08mother has to go through this process of feeling like her
- 2:03:11child's life is now her life. And if, you know, she lives
- 2:03:15through her child. And I thought that was still
- 2:03:17good that they did that. Like even though she was the
- 2:03:19villain mother character, she still had this element to her
- 2:03:23was like, she just wants, she's just a mother.
- 2:03:25And that's the problem. She has to become just a mother
- 2:03:29that she's living for her son. So I really actually like that
- 2:03:31they did that with her character, despite it being the
- 2:03:35villain, one of the villain. Yeah, she's so antagonistic.
- 2:03:38She's she's horrible, but I did like that and she kind of has
- 2:03:42her moment of reckoning from both, you know, Asun and gum
- 2:03:45young with they kind of say similar things to her, like your
- 2:03:49son is embarrassed by you and you're going to are you're going
- 2:03:52to regret this. You're speaking your mind.
- 2:03:54She's like, I, I need to speak my mind so I can and speak my
- 2:03:57mind lets me take a load off or a boulder off of my chest.
- 2:04:01And she's like, you know where that boater's going to go,
- 2:04:02right? So it's like it's going to go on
- 2:04:04your child's heart. You wanted to speak your mind
- 2:04:07about my daughter. It's going to just hurt your son
- 2:04:09in the end. And I was like, Yikes.
- 2:04:11She called that one because he was crying in the car at her
- 2:04:13wedding. So Oh my God, what a Pansy.
- 2:04:17Well, get off my property. So I had very little sympathy
- 2:04:22for this guy. I thought he just wasn't going
- 2:04:23to cut it. Yeah, she says to him or Kim
- 2:04:26Young says to him. If I stay with you, my parents
- 2:04:28heart will break. I can't do it.
- 2:04:30Yeah, I love that. I love that and I love the
- 2:04:33ultimatum she gave him earlier where she's like telling him I
- 2:04:37wanted to impress your mom so bad she hates me basically.
- 2:04:40And she said now you have to decide.
- 2:04:42Choose if you want to be a good husband or a good son.
- 2:04:45You can only be one. Please.
- 2:04:47I really don't want a man who needs to please everyone before
- 2:04:49you think about proposing. You must choose one or the
- 2:04:51other, and he still doesn't. No, when she gets when she gets
- 2:04:57rushed to the emergency room, he runs.
- 2:04:58It's like, I choose you. And she's like.
- 2:05:01Yeah, this is. At the time for that, simmer
- 2:05:03down. Yeah, simmer down.
- 2:05:05In fact, he doesn't even understand this guy, what she
- 2:05:09means necessarily because he's like, who would choose between,
- 2:05:13you know, their wife or fiance or significant other and their
- 2:05:17parents, their mother? And she fires back.
- 2:05:20Well, my father did. Clock it.
- 2:05:24Yeah, clock it, clock it. Right.
- 2:05:30Carol, did you have something you wanted to add?
- 2:05:32I loved the doctor in that scene where she was rolling messy.
- 2:05:37Get these people out of my room. I think she was played by E
- 2:05:42Bongrion. Yeah.
- 2:05:44And the hospital. Yeah.
- 2:05:45She's just like, what am I watching here?
- 2:05:47What are we doing? Is this some kind of drama?
- 2:05:49Just get them out. I don't need that.
- 2:05:52She was eye roll. I was like, that's me, That's
- 2:05:54me. It's funny, I did also want to
- 2:05:58just jump in and and bring up the breakup because there's a
- 2:06:02moment when at the episode she's like, they've been breaking up
- 2:06:05for a year and that just made me sick to my stomach.
- 2:06:08Me too. I they hate everything about
- 2:06:10that sentence. What do you?
- 2:06:11Mean. What do you mean?
- 2:06:13Yeah, like, get out of my face. Like, end it.
- 2:06:16So when they had their little actual real ending, I really
- 2:06:20appreciated it because I was like, it's due time.
- 2:06:22But I also actually really like the way that the conversation
- 2:06:26went because one of my least favorite things is X's to lovers
- 2:06:29to lovers. You know, X's, Yeah, lovers to
- 2:06:32X's to lovers again, I hate that.
- 2:06:34And so I like seeing when people are like, we actually really
- 2:06:37still love each other, but we're not good enough.
- 2:06:40We're not OK. We don't need to be together.
- 2:06:42I. We're all the way off.
- 2:06:44We're. All the way off.
- 2:06:45It's OK to say no. We can still have love for each
- 2:06:48other. And I really like them being
- 2:06:50very mature about that. Be like we have love for each
- 2:06:53other, but we can't be together. Took them a year.
- 2:06:56Took them a year. Took them a year, got there.
- 2:06:59One thing that I wanted to add in the pop culture section that
- 2:07:02we've already gone over, I forgot to say that they watch
- 2:07:06Cinema Paradiso a couple of times in this show, and I adore
- 2:07:12Cinema Paradiso. Have you guys seen that movie?
- 2:07:15It is. It's another ode to movie that
- 2:07:19is an ode to films. Movies the way that they make
- 2:07:23you feel. And in a similar sense, like
- 2:07:26this show is an ode to a whole host of things and I love that
- 2:07:32they bring up cinema parodies. It was one of the best movies
- 2:07:34ever, like of all time. Really highly recommend watching
- 2:07:38it. If you're already watching
- 2:07:38subtitles you might as well just watch cinema parodies though.
- 2:07:41It's an Italian film and they really resonate with it because
- 2:07:45it's not good. Let's talk about Kim Sono I
- 2:07:49guess and how he is another Quan chic 2 point O type of guy.
- 2:07:55There was a lot of things that he was doing for our girl and
- 2:08:00she said at one point she says you're just like my dad, Yeah.
- 2:08:03Yes, he's like you're like a Christmas tree.
- 2:08:07That's my favorite quote, one of my favorite quotes.
- 2:08:09I love that Carol. I love the Christmas tree moment
- 2:08:12that was I eat stuff like that up.
- 2:08:14Like he compared her to a Christmas tree because she
- 2:08:17sparkles. That's what he said, because she
- 2:08:20sparkles like I love it. And he was like, also, he's
- 2:08:23like, it didn't matter what room a Christmas tree is in.
- 2:08:26It's gonna always sparkle and warm your heart.
- 2:08:30And that's what Gum Young does. And I just like, that's a good.
- 2:08:34That was his like confession, I think.
- 2:08:35His little good man bro like he so when he finally catches up to
- 2:08:41her, because he runs after this bus for a couple of stops after
- 2:08:45he spots her at the theatre and he says finally and I'm like,
- 2:08:50that's already such a very forward open thing to say to
- 2:08:54somebody that you haven't seen in years.
- 2:08:55It's like, Oh my God, finally, I was, I, I was running after this
- 2:08:59bus to catch up to you. He keeps staring at her in awe.
- 2:09:04He says he went to the theater every day in hopes that she'd be
- 2:09:08there and says openly, I missed you.
- 2:09:11I just feel like he was very forward with his emotions.
- 2:09:16He was very forward with his intentions and he couldn't just
- 2:09:21stop giggling and. He was.
- 2:09:24Just absolutely jazz star to be in her presence.
- 2:09:27Nice. Sparkles.
- 2:09:29I loved when he let the misunderstanding just be there
- 2:09:34when his ex-girlfriend is like, oh so this is the girl and he
- 2:09:38doesn't say anything, no. He just like he sticks up for
- 2:09:42her, He sticks up for Kim Young in that situation because a girl
- 2:09:45starts going off the deep end and kissing her and he's like,
- 2:09:49you better watch your mouth. She's a.
- 2:09:50She goes to. I see you.
- 2:09:52And then and then doesn't she say like her heart whistles at
- 2:09:56that moment? Like, Oh my gosh, I was like,
- 2:09:58yeah, that's what we're calling it.
- 2:10:00Whistling. That's what we're calling it.
- 2:10:02It was beautiful. Yeah, he's so great.
- 2:10:04And then he painted her before he enlisted.
- 2:10:06He left this, like, elaborate painting of her in the basement
- 2:10:10of the theater. Are we serious?
- 2:10:13Then when they're finally together, I like her voice over
- 2:10:15saying, you know, we're dating like adults.
- 2:10:17So it's totally different than the seven-year relationship that
- 2:10:21I had with this guy that was my first love.
- 2:10:24This is totally different. Feels great and they have a
- 2:10:28Titanic reference. It's.
- 2:10:30Now 1997 yes, and she's doing the paint me like one of your
- 2:10:35French girls pose. He could not keep it together.
- 2:10:38He's giggling. It's adorable and.
- 2:10:41I think when they first met, like when he was the other girls
- 2:10:45kind of on and off boyfriend, like when he's like walking her
- 2:10:48home all those those nights. Like there is a moment when he
- 2:10:51he's quite quiet and dark, like he doesn't really talk or
- 2:10:55whatnot. And he's like this hair covering
- 2:10:56his face. He has his.
- 2:10:57Ugly. He looks horrible.
- 2:10:58He looks horrible. I didn't even know that was Kim
- 2:11:01Soho. And I was like, who is that?
- 2:11:03I was like, isn't he supposed to be in this drama?
- 2:11:04Where is he? And I'm like, oh, that was him,
- 2:11:06girl. Yeah, It's a homeless guy.
- 2:11:07I mean, he's homeless. Exactly.
- 2:11:09I was like, who is that? But then, like, there is a part
- 2:11:11where she says something and he laughs and she's like, oh, I
- 2:11:14didn't know you could smile. And then it was like the rest
- 2:11:17was history. After that first thing he's kept
- 2:11:20and we kept we're saying like, he keeps giggling.
- 2:11:22Like he keeps laughing. He.
- 2:11:23Loves. He loves that worship the ground
- 2:11:26she walks on. And even like the finally quote
- 2:11:28when you brought up dress like he says too, like when he says
- 2:11:31finally, he's like, I think this is when they use that word.
- 2:11:34Like this is when you're supposed to use that word.
- 2:11:36It's like finally. And I was like, I love that.
- 2:11:39I mean, that was writing right there.
- 2:11:40I had to give that to the. Romance.
- 2:11:41That's romance. I love that.
- 2:11:43I love stuff like that. And his mother is so good to her
- 2:11:47and so kind to her. And I think Carol, you love her.
- 2:11:50The Persimmon pastries that his mom makes acen and I think her
- 2:11:55letter says something like I adore your daughter more than.
- 2:11:58Words can say I think I love that she's I adore her and she
- 2:12:01and then Acen is like, that's what she was waiting for.
- 2:12:04Yeah. That's how she knew he she's
- 2:12:05like that's how I knew the person that my daughter picks is
- 2:12:08going to be the 1 is when they're his parents or his
- 2:12:10mother says like your daughter is amazing.
- 2:12:13I love her. Yeah.
- 2:12:14Why wouldn't I want her and part of be a part of my family?
- 2:12:18She's like, yeah, this he's the one.
- 2:12:19He's the one I quite liked when he went home to meet the family.
- 2:12:24And he's just following Kumiyang everywhere, puppy.
- 2:12:30And the dad is like, why do you keep following?
- 2:12:32She's going to the bathroom. Where are you going?
- 2:12:35He's like, I have to protect her.
- 2:12:37I have to stand there, watch her.
- 2:12:39Yeah, and watch her. And then she comes out of the
- 2:12:42washroom and he's like, yo, this is so hard.
- 2:12:46Like your dad doesn't like me. And she's like, you think when
- 2:12:50I'm being all Aggio to your mom, I actually like being that.
- 2:12:55You gotta step it up, Sir. She said try harder.
- 2:12:59Harder, try harder. Yeah.
- 2:13:02And he goes in and he's like drunk and stumbling and then all
- 2:13:05of a sudden being Aggio for for Guankshake.
- 2:13:08And Guanksha's like, what's wrong with you?
- 2:13:10But he starts to, he starts to smell it.
- 2:13:12But we're like, oh, yeah, The rest is history.
- 2:13:15They all love him. Yeah, this is good.
- 2:13:17At their wedding, Mama Essen finally gets to wear her pink
- 2:13:20book. I know don't do that.
- 2:13:23Just no. I had to.
- 2:13:24I had to bring it up. The Pink Book.
- 2:13:28Beautiful. She looked beautiful in it.
- 2:13:30I like that full circle shit, it's good.
- 2:13:33And in the meme moment, I was waiting for the meme.
- 2:13:35I have I had, you know, not watch this drama.
- 2:13:39And when I enjoyed that meme that went viral, I feel like on
- 2:13:43TikTok last year. What was the song?
- 2:13:46Was it? It was supernatural by Ariana
- 2:13:48Grande, right with him and then like him, you know, doing that
- 2:13:51thing. I I want to see that scene.
- 2:13:53I was looking forward to that moment.
- 2:13:54It was quite understated considering.
- 2:13:57Oh yeah, it was not a big. Deal.
- 2:14:00And it was actual. Drama.
- 2:14:01Yeah, but I like her friends when they're like, did you?
- 2:14:04Is he just naturally cutesy like that or did you train him?
- 2:14:07She's like, Nah, Nah, I trained him.
- 2:14:11She loved him too. Yeah, she loved him bad.
- 2:14:14I mean, I also really love to sing when she's giving birth to
- 2:14:17their daughter. And he, he's in the doctor's,
- 2:14:21like, I don't know, the baby's not doing well.
- 2:14:23And he's, she's like, you might need to sign a paper to prepare
- 2:14:26yourself. He's like I choose her, I choose
- 2:14:28her and he cuts her nurses off. I choose her.
- 2:14:32But then the fact that he calls Asun and it's like I.
- 2:14:36Love that needs. She's calling.
- 2:14:37Yeah, she's. Calling for and he starts
- 2:14:39crying. I think you need to come.
- 2:14:42I love that moment. I was like, he's so precious.
- 2:14:44But I think Carol mentioned this earlier, he's like gone at the
- 2:14:49very end of the drama. Like I feel like we don't see
- 2:14:51him but that one more time when they're in the bedroom asking
- 2:14:54about the piano. And this is right before she
- 2:14:56takes them to get their their health check up, which leads to
- 2:14:59the end. But I was just like, he just
- 2:15:02kind of disappeared for me. Yeah, they blipped him.
- 2:15:04Yeah, don't know why. I think it's because of his
- 2:15:07scandal and our people comfortable seeing him yet and
- 2:15:12sort. Of he just got back, didn't he?
- 2:15:14Yeah. He had just gotten back with
- 2:15:15this one. Yeah.
- 2:15:16Yeah, it's a comeback drama for him for sure.
- 2:15:19And I loved when the parents came to see her and they're just
- 2:15:22like, I only care about my daughter, right?
- 2:15:24Now, and he's they're like, we'll see the baby, Yeah.
- 2:15:26He's talking about his daughter. He's like, oh, she's this, she
- 2:15:29weighs this speedy pounds and this.
- 2:15:30And they're like, no, we're talking about our daughter.
- 2:15:33She's healthy. It's she healthy?
- 2:15:35He's like, Oh yeah, your daughter's healthy too.
- 2:15:39Yeah, that was cute. That was cute.
- 2:15:42Anything else you guys want to add about when life get?
- 2:15:45I mean, we can go on again for hours and hours.
- 2:15:47The final quote that I have from the show is the final voice over
- 2:15:52and it sort of wraps everything up.
- 2:15:55And I thought it was very nice to my parents who were so young
- 2:15:58and always so tenderhearted all throughout the seasons.
- 2:16:01With remorse, gratitude and the deepest respect.
- 2:16:04Thanks for showing us what to do when life gives you Tangerines.
