- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Spanish with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely. I've been practicing the seasons and weather, especially that spring episode. Lucas: Oh, that's great. And today we're going to tackle something we all use constantly, the time. Luna: The time? Like what time it is? Because I always get lost when people ask me in Spanish. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with the most common question, '¿Qué hora es?' Luna: '¿Qué hora es?' That means 'What time is it?' Lucas: Right. Listen again: '¿Qué hora es?' Luna: '¿Qué hora es?' Lucas: Perfect. Now, to answer, we use 'Es la una' when it's one o'clock, and 'Son las dos' for two o'clock. Luna: So 'Es la una' for one, 'Son las dos' for two. But why the difference? Lucas: Because 'una' is singular, so we say 'es', and 'las dos' is plural, so we say 'son'. It's like 'it is' versus 'they are'. Luna: Oh, I see. So 'Es la una' and 'Son las dos'. Let me try. 'Es la una.' Lucas: Yes. And 'Son las dos.' Luna: 'Son las dos.' Lucas: Perfect. Now, what about noon and midnight? We have 'Es mediodía' for noon and 'Es medianoche' for midnight. Luna: 'Es mediodía' and 'Es medianoche.' Those sound fun. Lucas: They are. So if someone asks you '¿Qué hora es?', you can say 'Es mediodía' or 'Es medianoche'. Luna: Got it. 'Es mediodía' at noon, 'Es medianoche' at midnight. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's put these in a mini conversation. Imagine you're at a park, like in our earlier episodes, and you check your phone. Luna: Okay, I'm at the park. My friend asks me, '¿Qué hora es?' Lucas: And you see it's one o'clock. What do you say? Luna: 'Es la una.' Lucas: Perfect. Now, if it's noon, you say 'Es mediodía.' Luna: 'Es mediodía.' Lucas: And if it's midnight, you might say 'Es medianoche.' Luna: 'Es medianoche.' Lucas: Great. So today we learned '¿Qué hora es?', 'Es la una', 'Son las dos', 'Es mediodía', and 'Es medianoche'. Luna: This is really useful. But sometimes I forget which 'es' or 'son' to use when it's not exactly one or two. Lucas: That's a good point. For other times, we can use 'Son las' with a number. But we'll keep it simple today. For one, 'Es la una', for all others, 'Son las' plus the number. Luna: So 'Son las tres', 'Son las cuatro', and so on. Lucas: Exactly. You're a natural. Luna: Oh, thanks. Lucas: And if it's two? Luna: Son las dos. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's try a tiny story. Imagine you're meeting a friend for lunch. You ask them, '¿Qué hora es?' They say, 'Es mediodía.' Luna: Great, so I know it's noon. Time for lunch. Lucas: Exactly. And if you're walking home late at night and check your phone, your friend asks '¿Qué hora es?' You say 'Es medianoche.' Luna: That makes sense. It's midnight, time to sleep. Lucas: You got it. Now, let's recap all five phrases one more time. '¿Qué hora es?' Luna: '¿Qué hora es?' Lucas: 'Es la una.' Luna: 'Es la una.' Lucas: 'Son las dos.' Luna: 'Son las dos.' Lucas: 'Es mediodía.' Luna: 'Es mediodía.' Lucas: And 'Es medianoche.' Luna: 'Es medianoche.' Lucas: Fantastic. You've done amazing today. Keep practicing these, and soon you'll be telling time in Spanish without even thinking. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to all our listeners. See you next time on Learn Spanish with Fexingo.
