Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Our guest today, quite possibly the greatest white athlete to
- 0:04Speaker 1: ever be on this earth, a man who has been
- 0:08Speaker 1: said got an apartment his rookie year, had a bed,
- 0:12Speaker 1: no TV, just for his iPad, so he could be
- 0:14Speaker 1: the greatest. Somehow went to Boston College. Should have gone
- 0:16Speaker 1: to the University of Michigan or Nebraska. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:19Speaker 1: give your give a rat a pause for Luke Keickley.
- 0:26Speaker 2: When it drops one day Hall of Fame, all white teamer.
- 0:31Speaker 3: There we go.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Gotta be starting backer, bro, Welcome to the bus.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I appreciate it. It's good to be on here.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, So why do you want to start? How
- 0:38Speaker 1: do you want to do this?
- 0:39Speaker 3: Hey?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yes, right right, okay, I'll take this.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Go ahead and start because I'm just looking at it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: That's that's him, that's that.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you want to start early in his life
- 0:51Speaker 1: or younger than.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Like?
- 0:54Speaker 1: That's Did you tell Luke that you actually played two
- 0:57Speaker 1: more years in the NFL than him?
- 0:59Speaker 3: No?
- 0:59Speaker 2: I figured we could to that point.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's a fact. I can't run from that situation. We
- 1:03Speaker 1: get to that point, you get to that point eventually.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you can go ahead and start it off, all right,
- 1:07Speaker 2: kick it well. I started to gather my thoughts.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Loo because of field to be the best white linebacker
- 1:11Speaker 1: ever live.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. So Brian er Lacker was the guy
- 1:14Speaker 3: that I grew up watching him and Zach Thomas are
- 1:17Speaker 3: pretty daggon good. And then Chicago guy Dick Buckets. I
- 1:20Speaker 3: feel like he kind of kind of got it all
- 1:23Speaker 3: rolling a little bit. Can you hear me get it close? Yeah?
- 1:25Speaker 3: But uh it was fun. Man. The game of football
- 1:28Speaker 3: is special. And the guys that I grew up watching Lack,
- 1:32Speaker 3: Zach Thomas, Derek Brooks, Ray Lewis, those are the dudes
- 1:35Speaker 3: that when I was growing up, I want to I
- 1:37Speaker 3: want to be like those guys.
- 1:38Speaker 1: When did the bug hit you? Because everything I know,
- 1:40Speaker 1: this is obviously the first time we've met. Yeah, but
- 1:43Speaker 1: playing against you, practicing against you one time when you.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Brutal, terrible actually practices.
- 1:49Speaker 1: We went away did joint practice. And I was always
- 1:52Speaker 1: told this guy Luke Keigley, like he is a football guy.
- 1:54Speaker 1: He's a machine. The way he operates, he calls out plays.
- 1:57Speaker 1: You have so many clips of guys saying, oh, we
- 1:59Speaker 1: would be sitting there, we checked to a play, and
- 2:01Speaker 1: then you would call out to play. It was no
- 2:03Speaker 1: difference when we were in practice. I actually, I don't
- 2:04Speaker 1: know if you read this. I walked up to you
- 2:06Speaker 1: in the middle of practice between plays and said something
- 2:08Speaker 1: to you. You were like a goddamn robot, like.
- 2:11Speaker 3: You were so dialag I was hot and trying to
- 2:13Speaker 3: get me off the field. It dials what you were.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So when did the bug hit? When did you realize, Okay,
- 2:18Speaker 1: football is what I want to do with my life.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I think growing up I wanted to play football, probably
- 2:24Speaker 3: start in like second or third grade. You know, you
- 2:25Speaker 3: grew up in the Midwest. I grew up in Ohio.
- 2:27Speaker 3: The first game that pops on is at noon, so
- 2:30Speaker 3: you wake up on Saturday. We always would have football
- 2:33Speaker 3: practice on Saturday mornings. We play on Sundays, and then
- 2:37Speaker 3: you'd watch college football all day. So I think for
- 2:39Speaker 3: me it was started as a young age. That's the
- 2:41Speaker 3: one game that I wanted to play, and we didn't
- 2:43Speaker 3: have an opportunity to play in twil I was in
- 2:44Speaker 3: fourth grade because just how the school was set up.
- 2:47Speaker 3: My dad didn't play football. We weren't really a football
- 2:50Speaker 3: family growing up, so by the time I got involved
- 2:52Speaker 3: with it, I was in fourth grade. And my brother
- 2:54Speaker 3: was in fifth grade and we just played on the
- 2:55Speaker 3: local school team. It was a group of I think
- 2:58Speaker 3: it was Saint Mike's Our Lady Is, the Sacred Heart
- 3:00Speaker 3: is where I went to school, and then Saint Xavier.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Those are the three team, three schools that made up
- 3:03Speaker 3: the team. So it was really like third grade that
- 3:07Speaker 3: I want, I knew I wanted to play, and then
- 3:08Speaker 3: fourth grade is the first year that actually played.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, why Boston College? Like coming to were you? Were
- 3:13Speaker 2: you an offer guy coming out of high school?
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so I knew. You know, when you're coming up,
- 3:19Speaker 3: you never expect you're gonna play in the NFL. I
- 3:21Speaker 3: think for me, it was always what's the next logical
- 3:23Speaker 3: step for me? So when you're in grade school, you
- 3:25Speaker 3: want to play on So it was third and fourth,
- 3:27Speaker 3: fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth. So when you move
- 3:30Speaker 3: up to fifth grade you're on the fifth and sixth team,
- 3:31Speaker 3: you want to play on that team, and then as
- 3:33Speaker 3: a sixth grader you play, and then on seventh grade
- 3:35Speaker 3: you go back in the same situation and then you
- 3:37Speaker 3: get to high school. We had a freshman team, a
- 3:39Speaker 3: JV team, and a varsity team. So my goal in
- 3:41Speaker 3: high school was to play on the varsity on the
- 3:44Speaker 3: varsity team as a junior.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It was crazy.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's crazy. We just had we had so many we had.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I went to a private all or a Catholic Jesuit
- 3:53Speaker 3: all boys school in Cincinnati. That's kind of one of
- 3:54Speaker 3: the reasons I went to BC. But there's sixteen hundred
- 3:58Speaker 3: boys and we probably had, you know, three to four
- 4:01Speaker 3: hundred kids in the football program.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it was huge, three to four hundred years.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So your school is one of the reasons why Ohio
- 4:08Speaker 1: always looked at such a big.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah, we were Southwest Ohigo, so we had like one hundred
- 4:11Speaker 3: and thirty five hundred and forty kids on the freshman team.
- 4:14Speaker 3: The jv team was just sophomores, and then that was
- 4:17Speaker 3: probably seventy eighty kids, and then on the varsity team
- 4:20Speaker 3: was like one hundred and forty kids again, so those
- 4:22Speaker 3: numbers get big quick. I went to BC because academically
- 4:27Speaker 3: was really strong. That was one thing that my parents
- 4:30Speaker 3: talk to me a lot about was go somewhere that
- 4:32Speaker 3: you wouldn't be able to get into without football. So
- 4:34Speaker 3: I wasn't getting in the Boston College. I looked at
- 4:36Speaker 3: Stanford wasn't getting to get in there. Duke and then
- 4:38Speaker 3: Virginia were the schools that I was looking at, and
- 4:40Speaker 3: I was like, I can't get in to any of
- 4:42Speaker 3: these schools without football, and I'm like, if I can
- 4:44Speaker 3: get a scholarship twenty these schools, I got an opportunity
- 4:47Speaker 3: to get a five year education of Masters for free
- 4:50Speaker 3: and go play football. So that's kind of what you're
- 4:52Speaker 3: thinking coming out. And Tom O'Brien was a Saint Xavier guy.
- 4:55Speaker 3: That's we went to high school. He went to Saint
- 4:59Speaker 3: Xavier and then he ended up coaching at Boston College
- 5:01Speaker 3: and started pulling kids out of the high school to
- 5:03Speaker 3: go to play football Boston College. So we probably had
- 5:05Speaker 3: a kid there for I don't know, twenty years in
- 5:09Speaker 3: a row from the high school, just overlapping, and the
- 5:13Speaker 3: guys that went to school there had a ton of success.
- 5:16Speaker 3: A lot of them were team captains, a lot of
- 5:18Speaker 3: them played really well, and it was a really How
- 5:21Speaker 3: that program was run was very similar to how the
- 5:23Speaker 3: program was running Cincinnati at Saint Xavior High School. Just toughness,
- 5:27Speaker 3: playing hard, doing the right thing. We didn't always have
- 5:29Speaker 3: the best athletes, but we played really well as a team,
- 5:33Speaker 3: and when I was being recruited, Matt Ryan was there.
- 5:35Speaker 3: So were they got as high as number two? They
- 5:38Speaker 3: beat Virginia Tech and Blacksburg on that pass across the
- 5:41Speaker 3: field from Matt I think I think Andre Calender caught
- 5:45Speaker 3: that ball and there was just a ton of hype
- 5:47Speaker 3: around them when I was being recruited, and it was
- 5:49Speaker 3: good academically. It was outside of Boston. I knew guys
- 5:51Speaker 3: that were There was a Jesuit school just like my
- 5:53Speaker 3: high school, and they were playing really really good football
- 5:56Speaker 3: at the time.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So were you an overachiever? Like were you a beast
- 5:59Speaker 2: in high school as well? Like, are any guys in
- 6:01Speaker 2: that school that three to four hundred? Are there any
- 6:04Speaker 2: freshmen or guys playing varsity? No?
- 6:06Speaker 3: So, I mean, you know, my my freshman year, I
- 6:10Speaker 3: didn't play a whole lot. We had we had since
- 6:13Speaker 3: the team was so big. We had an A team
- 6:15Speaker 3: and a B team, So the A team would play
- 6:17Speaker 3: like on a Wednesday, and the B team would play
- 6:19Speaker 3: on a Thursday. So we'd play the other freshman team. Yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 3: so they played on I think on Saturdays. No, the
- 6:28Speaker 3: varsity team played Friday nights and then we played Saturdays. Typically,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I think is what happened. So freshmen don't play varsity typically,
- 6:35Speaker 3: I don't think. I don't know the last time it's happened.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Occasionally you'll get like two or three sophomores play varsity,
- 6:40Speaker 3: but they got to be dudes. But I would say
- 6:43Speaker 3: that eighty five percent of guys don't aren't on the
- 6:46Speaker 3: varsity team until they're juniors.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So yeah, so that's why your goal was. I thinking
- 6:54Speaker 1: you like, if you had the bug, if you had
- 6:56Speaker 1: this kind of drive, the way everyone sees and talks
- 6:59Speaker 1: about this kid to have been a freshman on varsity,
- 7:02Speaker 1: but this it seems like an absolute powerhouse.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, And I loved I loved the game of football.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I was small, so my freshman year I played outside linebacker,
- 7:09Speaker 3: and my sophomore year they moved me to tight end
- 7:11Speaker 3: because the backers that we had they were bigger than me.
- 7:14Speaker 3: They're they're just better. So my sophomore year, those guys
- 7:17Speaker 3: all play backer, and then I played tight end, and
- 7:19Speaker 3: then my junior ed studies. I was a good blocker.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeahball, I'll tell you what.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I'm so glad I didn't have to play offense because
- 7:27Speaker 3: all formations and trades and shifts you play mike backer.
- 7:31Speaker 3: You just line up in the middle of the field. Yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 3: you don't got to go anywhere.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You're also calling out all those trades, formations and ship.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's but off. There was a guy named Ryan Long.
- 7:40Speaker 3: He played right tackle and he played tight end in
- 7:45Speaker 3: the year before, and then I think in like training camp,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and then they moved me to tight end and they
- 7:48Speaker 3: moved him to tackle. So he knew all the formation.
- 7:50Speaker 3: So I'd line up next to him in the huddle.
- 7:52Speaker 3: They called the play make where do I line up?
- 7:56Speaker 3: So I Ryan Long was like my my life support, uh,
- 8:00Speaker 3: playing tight end. And then I switched back to linebacker
- 8:02Speaker 3: as a junior, and then I played like a hybrid
- 8:04Speaker 3: safety as a senior.
- 8:06Speaker 1: So, so as a junior on varsity, were you starting
- 8:10Speaker 1: at that point? I did, Okay, that's one when they was.
- 8:12Speaker 3: So I started to grow. I started to grow a
- 8:14Speaker 3: little bit. I got a little bigger.
- 8:15Speaker 2: How big were you going into BC?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Oh man? So I played my senior year at like
- 8:21Speaker 3: two twelve, and then I got to BC. I was
- 8:23Speaker 3: probably like two eighteen. So I played I don't know,
- 8:27Speaker 3: two eighteen, two twenty as a freshman, and then like
- 8:29Speaker 3: two twenty eight as a sophomore, and then as a junior,
- 8:32Speaker 3: I played like two thirty one, two thirty two, Just a.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Thicky When did you know in college that hey, I
- 8:38Speaker 2: might have something. I might have a future in the NFL.
- 8:42Speaker 3: So I think you know you? So in college it
- 8:45Speaker 3: was interesting because Mark Kurzlik, you guys remember him Monster. Yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 3: so Mark Hurzlik was a junior. I went to spring game.
- 8:52Speaker 3: He was he was going into his what was.
- 8:55Speaker 2: It because he got done with his junior year, right,
- 8:57Speaker 2: he was like a first round potential cancer thing happened. Yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 2: he fought his sat out a year.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I go to spring ball, going as when I'm a senior,
- 9:07Speaker 3: Mark's going to be a He's he's going to be
- 9:10Speaker 3: a senior in college. So it's his spring ball before
- 9:12Speaker 3: his senior year, and they'd been telling me like, Mark's
- 9:14Speaker 3: got like a low back hamstring thing, He's probably not
- 9:17Speaker 3: going to play a lot in the spring. Amos bummed
- 9:18Speaker 3: because I wanted to watch him play. So he goes
- 9:21Speaker 3: and plays, a couple of snaps comes out, and then
- 9:23Speaker 3: like a couple of weeks later it's he's got ewing
- 9:25Speaker 3: sarcoma bone cancer. So I get there I get to school.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Mark's out the whole year. Essentially, he red shirted as
- 9:32Speaker 3: he was dealing with cancer. I don't know how the
- 9:33Speaker 3: guy did it. He was there all the time, worked
- 9:36Speaker 3: out every day, was still big and strong, was in
- 9:39Speaker 3: all the meetings. He was fantastic as a young guy
- 9:41Speaker 3: to come cancer ball. Yeah he had gone through chemo, radiation, everything.
- 9:46Speaker 3: But he was a great older guy to have at
- 9:48Speaker 3: BC as a freshman. He wasn't playing, so there was
- 9:51Speaker 3: like no stress of I mean, he was dealing with
- 9:53Speaker 3: cancer obviously, but.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that is a that is a football thing to say. Yes,
- 10:00Speaker 1: the distress of playing as crazy.
- 10:01Speaker 3: So so then Mark's out. Mike mcloffin was our Mike linebacker.
- 10:06Speaker 3: He's like the prototype from Massachusetts. He had he had
- 10:10Speaker 3: the cowboy collar, neck roll, he had the little bull ring. Yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 3: he wore the diaper chin strap. No he didn't. He
- 10:15Speaker 3: had a diaper chin strap, but then he switched over
- 10:17Speaker 3: to the pad in one. But he was like the prototype.
- 10:19Speaker 3: He was coming back from an achilles, so he was
- 10:21Speaker 3: going to miss the first couple games of the season
- 10:24Speaker 3: and then I don't know, a week or two in
- 10:26Speaker 3: the training camp are starting Mike backer. Will Thompson gets
- 10:31Speaker 3: like a shoulder stinger. So I'm over with the freshman
- 10:34Speaker 3: doing inside run, get my teeth kicked in, and they
- 10:39Speaker 3: just needed a mic backer, so they called me over
- 10:41Speaker 3: and I had to go over as like little skinny
- 10:43Speaker 3: two hundred and twenty pound luke and play against the
- 10:45Speaker 3: older guys and just get my teeth kicked in. I
- 10:47Speaker 3: was like, this is awful. And my coach came up
- 10:49Speaker 3: to me after the after that period and he's like,
- 10:52Speaker 3: I was pretty terrible. You got to figure it out
- 10:55Speaker 3: because you're going to play week one because we don't
- 10:57Speaker 3: have anybody else. I was like, what about this guy?
- 11:00Speaker 3: And he's like, well that guy, uh, that guy got
- 11:03Speaker 3: popped for a drug test, so he can't play either.
- 11:06Speaker 3: So if you're.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Looking at the saying, hey, you're being told you're gonna
- 11:10Speaker 1: play week one, but you're like, hey, what about that guy.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I'm like yeah, yeah, I'm like I'm my confidence is zero.
- 11:16Speaker 3: So hers Lick's out, max out. Will Thompson gets hurt,
- 11:20Speaker 3: guy gets popped for a drug test, and then before
- 11:22Speaker 3: you know, your top four guys are out and so
- 11:25Speaker 3: there's really no one left. Like, hey, week one, you're
- 11:28Speaker 3: just gonna have to figure it out. So the first
- 11:30Speaker 3: couple of games this season or disaster, you go down
- 11:32Speaker 3: the Clemson we play in Death Valley against C. J.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Spiller and that they had daikuon Bowers and they had another,
- 11:40Speaker 3: they had an I forget another.
- 11:42Speaker 1: He's back there. JP's a South Carolina guy. He hates
- 11:46Speaker 1: every time they're mentioned. They have they have to be
- 11:48Speaker 1: trashed off.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Yeah. So but then you make a couple of plays
- 11:52Speaker 3: in those games You're like, you know, I got a chance.
- 11:54Speaker 3: And then I remember my sophomore year was when I
- 11:57Speaker 3: was like, okay, you played against in Clemson against you know, CJ. Spiller,
- 12:02Speaker 3: and then you just start going through the guys that
- 12:03Speaker 3: you play against. You're like, these guys are all getting
- 12:05Speaker 3: drafted in the NFL, Like this might actually be an
- 12:09Speaker 3: opportunity for me. So it's it's just interesting how you
- 12:11Speaker 3: go from high school you want to play on the
- 12:13Speaker 3: varsity team do as a freshman like you, I don't
- 12:16Speaker 3: really have a choice. You get in there and play
- 12:18Speaker 3: and then you're like, man, I'm this is fun. I'm
- 12:20Speaker 3: starting to have some success. And then you fast forward.
- 12:23Speaker 3: You kind of the next thing you look forward too
- 12:24Speaker 3: is like I love the game of football. I've had
- 12:26Speaker 3: a ton of fun. I'd love to keep playing this
- 12:28Speaker 3: as long as I can. So you kind of look back,
- 12:30Speaker 3: as probably probably three quarters of the way through my
- 12:33Speaker 3: sophomore year, you look back and you're like, these are
- 12:35Speaker 3: the guys that I've played against. This has been their
- 12:37Speaker 3: career in the NFL. Like maybe I got a chance.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So there wasn't like a specific play in mind that
- 12:41Speaker 1: you made a big play and you're like, oh shit, okay,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I can do this. It was a reflection period for you,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but you're going to look back and kind of be like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: all right, all these guys are playing in the NFL.
- 12:49Speaker 2: This means I can do X, Y and Z as well. Yeah.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I just think you you know, you look at it
- 12:53Speaker 3: and you're like, I've played in like big games. We
- 12:56Speaker 3: played at Clemson, we played at Florida State, we played
- 12:59Speaker 3: at Notre Dame, and you like, these are the these
- 13:01Speaker 3: are the teams in the situations that you grew up
- 13:03Speaker 3: watching and now you get a chance to be in them.
- 13:05Speaker 3: And it's something I always tell guys, like, you need
- 13:08Speaker 3: to enjoy the game because when it's gone, it's gone.
- 13:11Speaker 3: So I was so when I was playing so laser
- 13:13Speaker 3: focused on football in the process that you don't ever
- 13:17Speaker 3: take a second to really look back and say, damn,
- 13:20Speaker 3: like that was that was pretty cool? You know.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because you're sophomore junior, you're correct me if I'm wrong,
- 13:25Speaker 2: But you led the NCAA and tackles.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we just we were on the field a lot.
- 13:31Speaker 3: We were on the field a lot. We didn't you
- 13:33Speaker 3: kind of we kind of really didn't have a choice.
- 13:35Speaker 3: You know, you played eighty ninety snaps, like you got
- 13:39Speaker 3: more opportunities especially you know. The other thing too, is
- 13:42Speaker 3: like we weren't ahead a lot late. So you know
- 13:46Speaker 3: what happens at the end of the game. Their teams
- 13:47Speaker 3: are running four minute, they're gonna run the ball and
- 13:49Speaker 3: they got they got five or six run plays, and
- 13:52Speaker 3: they're gonna run power. They're gonna lead, and they're gonna
- 13:54Speaker 3: run stretch. It's like perfect, all right, here we go.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Buddy. Every time he like you'd see a statu sheet
- 13:59Speaker 2: on like league leaders, and he's sitting there every week
- 14:03Speaker 2: averaging like fifteen tackles a game. That is I'm thinking,
- 14:06Speaker 2: who is this louke Keekley guy from that he must
- 14:08Speaker 2: be on the field a lot, yeahst lot, Like the
- 14:11Speaker 2: excuse to the competitor makes like, oh they got.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Well, you know what's funny is you look at all
- 14:15Speaker 3: those things and like people are lying if they don't
- 14:17Speaker 3: look at that stuff. Right. So then I went and
- 14:19Speaker 3: looked at it one time and it had number of
- 14:21Speaker 3: snaps played and it was like we had a gazillion.
- 14:24Speaker 3: And then you go look at like Alabama that got
- 14:27Speaker 3: like Dante high Towers at Alabama, he had like half
- 14:30Speaker 3: the amount of snaps played that we did. Inland, Chris
- 14:33Speaker 3: Borland had a million.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Dog.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Well, you were here as twenty.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Thirteen, twenty twelve, twenty that linebacker class was strong.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys had because I was twenty thirteen while
- 14:43Speaker 2: I was undrafted. But twenty twelve you guys said it.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Was you, so it was Dante Hier and then Bobby
- 14:50Speaker 3: got drafted in the second round. Wagner, Levonte, David Do,
- 14:55Speaker 3: Mario Davis. Yeah, there was some I'm sure I'm and
- 14:58Speaker 3: I'm probably missing some guys.
- 15:00Speaker 2: But those top four that you just said tomorrow Davis, Levante,
- 15:03Speaker 2: David yourself, with Bobby Wagner.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Three of those guys, I mean to Mario is still
- 15:06Speaker 3: playing with the Saints and that dude he's You look
- 15:10Speaker 3: at his stats and it's like, oh my gosh, like
- 15:13Speaker 3: what he's been able to do. Same thing with Bobby.
- 15:15Speaker 3: The guy that I never feel like it's enough credit
- 15:17Speaker 3: is Levante. I love Levonte. Look at go look at
- 15:22Speaker 3: his his sacks, his forced fumbles and his fumber recoveries.
- 15:26Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Dude.
- 15:27Speaker 3: He is always around the football. He's a great dude.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah, he's phenomenal. Yesterday, the Bucks their profile posted like
- 15:35Speaker 2: his stats. He has sixteen hundred tackles. Right now, there's
- 15:38Speaker 2: only eight guys in the history of the game that
- 15:40Speaker 2: have over sixteen hundred tackles. Him and Bobby Wagner are
- 15:42Speaker 2: both still doing it.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Unbelieved guys who have those and they're not slowing down.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Bobby had over one hundred last year. I think he
- 15:49Speaker 3: just resigned. And then Levante signed another deal with Tampa,
- 15:51Speaker 3: which is cool because you know, as great of his
- 15:54Speaker 3: career as he's had, he's been on the same team
- 15:56Speaker 3: the whole time.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's cool gevity that he's had. Yeah, and
- 16:01Speaker 1: and not get jaded over kind of being overlooked by
- 16:04Speaker 1: so many guys yourself at points.
- 16:07Speaker 2: I was telling JP has one Pro Bowl I believe,
- 16:10Speaker 2: and it was as an alternate. But it's such bullshit
- 16:12Speaker 2: because he's like one of the most underrated players of
- 16:14Speaker 2: all time.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Well, the thing that hurts him is that he he's
- 16:17Speaker 3: classified because they were four to three. He was an
- 16:20Speaker 3: outside linebacker, so like the prototype outside linebacker is like,
- 16:24Speaker 3: you know, the rush and the guys got fifteen sacks.
- 16:28Speaker 1: And right that's where yeah, those those Sam and Willis
- 16:31Speaker 1: kind of get screwed over in the Pro Bowl because
- 16:33Speaker 1: the guys at their hand of the dirt.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Well, the funniest part about the Pro Bowl is that
- 16:36Speaker 3: they those off the ball backers. They're listed as outside linebackers.
- 16:40Speaker 3: The only rush it's only a four down look, so
- 16:42Speaker 3: those guys have to play off the ball. They're playing
- 16:44Speaker 3: a fourth three justin Houston is playing off the ball
- 16:48Speaker 3: at five yards, Like what are you doing?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know they at the fourth quarter of the game.
- 16:52Speaker 1: If it's tight, though, I'm aout to take you.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, because it is.
- 16:57Speaker 1: It is a little bit of a war.
- 16:58Speaker 2: We interrupt this episode.
- 17:00Speaker 3: You neutral.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Have you tried Neutral before? If not, you are missing
- 17:03Speaker 2: out And let me tell you why. Real vodka, real juice.
- 17:07Speaker 2: It is the tastiest seltzer on the market right now.
- 17:10Speaker 2: A couple of my popular a couple of my favorites,
- 17:12Speaker 2: A couple of my trends right now, watermelon and black cherry.
- 17:15Speaker 2: They also have some new flavors that I will read
- 17:17Speaker 2: to you right here, lime and strawberry. It is the
- 17:20Speaker 2: perfect drink to bring when hanging out with your friends,
- 17:23Speaker 2: because guys, right now, March Madness is happening, Baseball is
- 17:27Speaker 2: getting in full effect, Torpedo bats, home runs, all of it.
- 17:30Speaker 2: You're hanging with your friends, You're at a tailgate, you're
- 17:32Speaker 2: in there, you're in their backyard, you're in the house,
- 17:34Speaker 2: you're at a bar. No matter where you are, Neutral
- 17:37Speaker 2: is the drink you want to have in your hand
- 17:38Speaker 2: when you walk through that door. Neutral, keep it tasty.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Were you you at IMG training for the combine?
- 17:45Speaker 3: Yeah? Is that where you were?
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah? That's why I went as well. And that was like,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I think my first introduction to the Luke Keikley. You
- 17:49Speaker 1: had like yourself a little mirror, oh gosh on the
- 17:51Speaker 1: wall and they're like, you know that guy is?
- 17:53Speaker 2: We had?
- 17:53Speaker 3: That was so fun?
- 17:55Speaker 4: Dude.
- 17:55Speaker 1: IM really is an awesome place because there's no like
- 17:58Speaker 1: I was a big time party ring college and then
- 18:01Speaker 1: you know, got a little straight as I got into
- 18:02Speaker 1: the league. But like when you're in Brandington, Florida, there's
- 18:04Speaker 1: like newly weds and nearly dead. There's no one between.
- 18:06Speaker 1: There's no nightlife or nothing. So it was me and
- 18:08Speaker 1: like the thirty other guys that were training.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 18:11Speaker 1: That's all we had. We had like a small little shitty.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Those little apartments are just off of the IMG.
- 18:16Speaker 3: The golf cart.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Yeah, the golf cart you rip it around.
- 18:18Speaker 3: It was the first time you had a little freedom
- 18:21Speaker 3: golf cart in your own place.
- 18:22Speaker 1: But it's also well regimented. I loved it. There was
- 18:25Speaker 1: that were you thinking about tween there in Exos?
- 18:28Speaker 3: No, because the guys so Markers like and then Anthony Costanzo.
- 18:33Speaker 1: A gangster Boston College at Yeah.
- 18:35Speaker 3: He they were the year year ahead of me in
- 18:37Speaker 3: the draft. So Anthony got drafted first round by the Colts.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And then Mark mark was went to the Giants and
- 18:42Speaker 3: those guys trained at IMG and and I went to
- 18:45Speaker 3: school with them and I was like guys Exos or IMG,
- 18:47Speaker 3: and they're like just good to IMG. We went there
- 18:49Speaker 3: was sick we enjoyed it. It was awesome. It was sick.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah, they're entire Yeah you work there because I AMG.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I feel like they do it better than anybody else
- 19:00Speaker 1: as far as like getting guys good for the combine
- 19:02Speaker 1: because they don't just do the weightlifting and the running,
- 19:05Speaker 1: but they're also they have a classrooms to go over
- 19:07Speaker 1: media stuff almost improvisation classes to Okay, you're thrown off
- 19:12Speaker 1: with this, what do you do now? What do you
- 19:13Speaker 1: said X, Y and z. They bring up maybe some
- 19:15Speaker 1: things that aren't so great about you, like how are
- 19:17Speaker 1: you going to attack this situation? So I think I
- 19:19Speaker 1: AMG was such a great experience.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It's so funny you do all that work. And then
- 19:23Speaker 3: when I worked with the team the first year I
- 19:24Speaker 3: got done planing, I worked a team in the scouting department,
- 19:26Speaker 3: and you can pull up all your profiles if you
- 19:30Speaker 3: know combine, and you know every every you know report
- 19:35Speaker 3: written on you and highweight, speed and all your tape,
- 19:38Speaker 3: and so I was like, I got bored one day.
- 19:40Speaker 3: I looked at it and I looked at my combine
- 19:41Speaker 3: interview with the Panthers. It's a disaster. Really Yeah, I
- 19:45Speaker 3: was like sitting had my glasses on. I was nervous.
- 19:50Speaker 3: I was probably sweating, and I was supers like they'd
- 19:54Speaker 3: asked me a question bike, Yes that's cover four, and
- 19:57Speaker 3: I'm like, gosh, you suck.
- 19:58Speaker 1: You sound so bad, right, that's how obviously getting drafted,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Like I met with the Titans, and I was probably
- 20:04Speaker 1: the same way, but a year removed. Seeing those same
- 20:06Speaker 1: familiar faces now in that room. Yeah, how image you are.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Oh you're so scared man, And because the train station
- 20:11Speaker 3: is no joke.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Yeah, like that that combine experience was your Did you
- 20:14Speaker 1: have a good combine experience?
- 20:16Speaker 3: I really yeah, I really enjoyed it.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I think that first night of those interviews, because you
- 20:22Speaker 3: have the train station, which is like they can just
- 20:24Speaker 3: come and grab you, obviously, and then the one on
- 20:27Speaker 3: ones or they put you in the room where it's
- 20:28Speaker 3: only fifteen minutes and half the first two minutes three
- 20:31Speaker 3: minutes of them introducing themselves, in the last two or
- 20:34Speaker 3: three minutes of them leave you leaving, so it's only
- 20:36Speaker 3: like a ten minute window. And then they're peppering you
- 20:39Speaker 3: with questions and I'm nervous. You're at it's your job
- 20:44Speaker 3: interview and you're trying to put your best foot forward,
- 20:47Speaker 3: and I was just nervous and I was sitting in
- 20:49Speaker 3: there just and I was like, I would not draft
- 20:52Speaker 3: that guy.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Well the combine is so crazy as everyone sees
- 20:55Speaker 1: what happens when you're running and benching and jumping all that,
- 20:58Speaker 1: but really all the scary shit happened.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Oh that's three four days prior.
- 21:02Speaker 1: When you get to go run, you're find like, thank
- 21:04Speaker 1: god it's over. Yeah, because you get there the first
- 21:06Speaker 1: day and it's like kind of introductions. Hey, this is
- 21:08Speaker 1: what's gonna happen. This is your land yard, this is
- 21:10Speaker 1: the train station works, this is how your official meetings work.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Four am you have a pissed test. Yeah, so it's
- 21:14Speaker 1: like the number one rule is like just do not
- 21:16Speaker 1: miss it and make sure you don't piece. So I
- 21:19Speaker 1: remember I was roommates with Zach Martin.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and we.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Took shoes and we put it on top of the
- 21:23Speaker 1: toilet seat just in case you wake up in the
- 21:24Speaker 1: middle night and try to go pee, and we would
- 21:26Speaker 1: like be like a little Countabillo buddies, make sure we're
- 21:28Speaker 1: all up together.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's what you need because you're nervous because you're
- 21:32Speaker 3: up at.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Four am for a drug test, and then it's meetings
- 21:35Speaker 1: all day, MRIs the middle of the day, and then
- 21:38Speaker 1: back to the train station.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Everything else.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Well, were you a weight guy, did you have to
- 21:41Speaker 3: keep weight on?
- 21:42Speaker 1: I was always a guy that had to gain weight.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Yeah, So you know, they get you there and then
- 21:45Speaker 3: you can't eat as much as you typically do. There's
- 21:48Speaker 3: no scale, so then when you have to go weigh in,
- 21:50Speaker 3: you don't know how much you weigh right, and they're like, Luke,
- 21:52Speaker 3: you need to be over two hundred and forty pounds.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So you're just in there chugging.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And they have the worst fucking snacks. But it's all
- 21:59Speaker 1: like cups, the skittles and shit, Like, I guess this
- 22:01Speaker 1: is what I'm doing.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I gotta do it. I gotta drink, I gotta eat something. Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I always did a great job having like food waiting
- 22:06Speaker 1: for you. Hav himself a little area where you go
- 22:08Speaker 1: with a backpack.
- 22:09Speaker 3: And they just stuffed it with everything. I'll tell you
- 22:11Speaker 3: what the combine it was. I loved it. It was
- 22:14Speaker 3: so cool because you grow up watching it. You don't
- 22:17Speaker 3: really grow up watching training at IMG, like you don't
- 22:19Speaker 3: really understand that. But you grow up and you watch
- 22:22Speaker 3: these guys run the forty and jump and bench and
- 22:25Speaker 3: do all that stuff. And then you get there and
- 22:26Speaker 3: you're like, this is sweet. I get to do It's
- 22:30Speaker 3: like your first step to the NFL. Doris. I had
- 22:33Speaker 3: to do it. I had to do them on my
- 22:35Speaker 3: knees and I had something on my elbow, but like,
- 22:37Speaker 3: not a not a ton. I was pretty lucky.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It's funny too, how much everybody? Because I know Levante
- 22:42Speaker 2: him being like an undersized guy. Guy's just obsessing over
- 22:45Speaker 2: hitting a certain weight. Got to weigh in just so
- 22:48Speaker 2: you hit the metric, like Levante always played like in
- 22:51Speaker 2: the like like two twenty to two twenty five. But
- 22:54Speaker 2: he's like, I have to be like two hundred and
- 22:56Speaker 2: thirty three pounds.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Isn't that crazy? I never weighed to forty ever again
- 22:59Speaker 3: in my life.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but on that little stat sheet says toy.
- 23:03Speaker 3: And you're like, yeah, every don't don't skip me a pound.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:07Speaker 3: When you step on the scale two and you saw
- 23:08Speaker 3: two forty two, how juice that thing kept ticking up?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And I was like, yes, dude, you know another
- 23:13Speaker 1: thing that's kind of a sleeper. Did they have the
- 23:15Speaker 1: little egg pods?
- 23:16Speaker 3: Yeah, you do that afterwards.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yeah, So we would do those IMG like every couple
- 23:20Speaker 1: of weeks. I guess if anything's gonna fucking change, But
- 23:22Speaker 1: my body fat would be like I don't know, like
- 23:24Speaker 1: twenty or nineteen or something like that. Okay, but it
- 23:26Speaker 1: had to be in those rooms. They had to have
- 23:28Speaker 1: a certain pressure for those that read correctly. Yeah, So
- 23:31Speaker 1: when I got to the combine, they hadn't made this
- 23:33Speaker 1: open room where it was like being opened and closed
- 23:35Speaker 1: a bunch, So my body fat was read at like
- 23:37Speaker 1: fifteen percent. Yes, I'm like, oh, I made a four
- 23:40Speaker 1: percent jump in a week.
- 23:41Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 23:42Speaker 1: I thought I was killing I've been on my shit, Yeah,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I've been on it. What was the most nerve wracking
- 23:46Speaker 1: part for you at the combine from from the like
- 23:49Speaker 1: athletic standpoint.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Oh Man, probably the forty yeah, because that was the
- 23:54Speaker 3: question was how how much you're gonna weigh and what
- 23:56Speaker 3: are you gonna run? So I actually had to run it.
- 23:59Speaker 3: I ran the forty three times. You mess up on one,
- 24:03Speaker 3: so the first one I run it goes really well.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Second one, because you know you can't see it, you
- 24:08Speaker 3: got to find ways to like get it. You know,
- 24:10Speaker 3: you look at your phone and somebody texts you, but.
- 24:12Speaker 1: It's not They don't do that anymore.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Do you watch it now?
- 24:15Speaker 1: Now they have people in the stands and they show
- 24:17Speaker 1: your four.
- 24:19Speaker 3: That's kind of nice because.
- 24:20Speaker 1: It was the same way for me too, where you
- 24:22Speaker 1: go up and like a couple of the guys you're like, hey,
- 24:24Speaker 1: what I run Like they're saying.
- 24:25Speaker 3: X, Y and Z. Yeah. So then second one comes up,
- 24:28Speaker 3: and you know, when you get in that forty start,
- 24:31Speaker 3: there's holes because everybody's been there, so everybody takes like
- 24:33Speaker 3: the same like first two steps, so there's kind of
- 24:36Speaker 3: an indentation in the ground. And I was off just
- 24:38Speaker 3: to half step to the left, and I took my
- 24:41Speaker 3: first step out and I stepped kind of in the
- 24:43Speaker 3: whole sideways and I turned right real fast and almost
- 24:47Speaker 3: ran into the the laser reader and then straighten it
- 24:51Speaker 3: out and I ran like it was I ran like
- 24:53Speaker 3: four to nine, and I was like, oh gosh, that
- 24:56Speaker 3: was you said that was the second one. That was
- 24:58Speaker 3: the second one, the first one. The first one was
- 24:59Speaker 3: like four or five. And then I go four to
- 25:01Speaker 3: nine and this guy comes up to me and he's
- 25:03Speaker 3: like he's like, hey, you're gonna probably have to run
- 25:07Speaker 3: another one. We got a bad reading on either the
- 25:09Speaker 3: first or the second one, and I was like, oh no.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Did you know at the point too that you had
- 25:13Speaker 2: ran a four or five In the first one, Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 3: I knew I ran well. And then the second one,
- 25:17Speaker 3: I knew I stepped in the hole. And I'm like, okay,
- 25:18Speaker 3: this kind of makes sense. So then everybody had to
- 25:20Speaker 3: go run their second one. So I was the last
- 25:22Speaker 3: guy after the last guy in the in the line
- 25:25Speaker 3: to go run again, and I ran it again. I
- 25:27Speaker 3: looked at it. Guys like, how is that. He's like,
- 25:28Speaker 3: you'll be good. I was like, all right, perfect, you'd
- 25:30Speaker 3: be good.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:32Speaker 3: He's like, he's like, the middle one must have gotten
- 25:34Speaker 3: messed up. But it was I stepped in, I stepped
- 25:36Speaker 3: in a hole, or I stepped my step was bad
- 25:39Speaker 3: or something. But you know, it's so nerve wracking. That's
- 25:42Speaker 3: like the only thing that matter.
- 25:44Speaker 1: What's that you didn't want to focus on getting a
- 25:46Speaker 1: tan before the combine?
- 25:46Speaker 3: Of course? Not you look faster that did you have
- 25:49Speaker 3: the task?
- 25:50Speaker 2: Did you ever last in the four fours?
- 25:52Speaker 4: No?
- 25:52Speaker 3: I don't think we ever really ran. I think we
- 25:55Speaker 3: ran a forty Like the first week we were there,
- 25:58Speaker 3: and then everything was just segmented out out. You work
- 26:01Speaker 3: on starts, flying twenties, you know, flying forties, so you
- 26:04Speaker 3: never really get a true number for what you're gonna run,
- 26:08Speaker 3: but you have an idea like I felt good, I
- 26:10Speaker 3: felt strong, I felt my starts were good. And then
- 26:12Speaker 3: it's like, just go. It looks so stiff running it.
- 26:15Speaker 1: But I know because it will, and I am You're
- 26:17Speaker 1: trying to do everything you're training. You're like elbows and
- 26:19Speaker 1: this and that and relax your face. I remember I
- 26:21Speaker 1: ran a forty when we first the forty IMG, and
- 26:24Speaker 1: I was like a five to one.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I was like, there's no fucking way. I'm like, I'm
- 26:28Speaker 1: a sub five guy, no doubt. But I was like
- 26:30Speaker 1: trying to like mechanically do exactly what they were saying
- 26:32Speaker 1: the whole time to where it was just awful.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Part of me thinks that they click it a little
- 26:36Speaker 3: bit slower.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I thought the same.
- 26:37Speaker 3: So they're like, you ran you ran five four, so
- 26:39Speaker 3: then when you run four nine, they're like, look what we.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Did half second faster. We're the greatest thing.
- 26:45Speaker 3: They were unbelievable. Lauren Seagrave was was he there be
- 26:49Speaker 3: He was unbelievable.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Older older guy.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he was always wore orange, always war orange.
- 26:54Speaker 1: He had the really shocking shoes. And then who was
- 26:55Speaker 1: the chick from London? Did you have the girl?
- 26:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 26:58Speaker 1: She was a yeah she was Yeah, she was a
- 27:01Speaker 1: great running coach. I can't remember her name right now,
- 27:03Speaker 1: which kind of sucks.
- 27:03Speaker 3: It was I had a ton of like everything that
- 27:05Speaker 3: they did there was a reason why they did it.
- 27:07Speaker 3: It's not like we just showed up and they're like,
- 27:09Speaker 3: all right, you're gonna do this and right, and I
- 27:10Speaker 3: remember running like the short shuttle. It was footwork. It
- 27:14Speaker 3: was like seven or eight steps, right, it's all.
- 27:17Speaker 1: The five in the five ten five because in fact,
- 27:20Speaker 1: if I was like two three two or something like somebody,
- 27:23Speaker 1: they had like numbers to it.
- 27:24Speaker 2: You're like, okay, you're somebody who could like skip over
- 27:26Speaker 2: to the first five and just get in like two steps.
- 27:28Speaker 3: You're like, yeah, this was amazing, like all that stuff
- 27:31Speaker 3: that you put in for you know, there's Laurence c
- 27:35Speaker 3: Grave right there.
- 27:36Speaker 1: That yeah, he is awesome.
- 27:37Speaker 3: He was great dude.
- 27:39Speaker 1: So I don't know if you felt this way, But
- 27:40Speaker 1: after I ran the forty and I got the time
- 27:43Speaker 1: that I wanted. It felt like everything else was just
- 27:44Speaker 1: cake after that. Yeah, because it's so stressful when you're
- 27:47Speaker 1: standing up because we had what number were you? Do
- 27:49Speaker 1: you remember for the combine?
- 27:51Speaker 2: Oh?
- 27:53Speaker 3: I don't so what I was thirteen, maybe I don't know, Yeah,
- 27:57Speaker 3: nineteen nineteen.
- 27:58Speaker 1: I was twenty three. And my whole thing was like,
- 28:01Speaker 1: I just don't want to go first. So I was like, oh,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I'm twenty three. Last name is Lawan, I'll be I'll
- 28:05Speaker 1: be solid. Well, they broke it up groups, so it
- 28:09Speaker 1: was one through twenty two, so I was the first
- 28:12Speaker 1: guy to go in the second group and they're like,
- 28:13Speaker 1: we're all kind of warming up. Everyone's so stressed out. Yeah,
- 28:17Speaker 1: that's my Beyonce walk.
- 28:18Speaker 3: And you see that tan you look, Yeah, you look
- 28:20Speaker 3: like you're you look like you're about fifteen percent right there. Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what the body comp said. But that chick
- 28:27Speaker 1: that I can't remember her name, the one from one,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and she's like, hey, when you run go to the
- 28:30Speaker 1: back of the platform and have your Beyonce walk, like
- 28:33Speaker 1: every the whole combine everyone you're waiting on everybody. Yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 1: but once you do that, it's now your time. You
- 28:39Speaker 1: take as long as you need whatever, And so I
- 28:41Speaker 1: took all the time in the world because I was
- 28:44Speaker 1: my heart's racing right there, my little gazelle you see
- 28:48Speaker 1: on the back too.
- 28:49Speaker 3: How'd you think your walk was? You give the thumb out.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I was so I was thinking about okay, steps, you're
- 28:53Speaker 1: moving your little feetback, and you're just thinking, please don't
- 28:55Speaker 1: get called back on this start. That was what I
- 28:58Speaker 1: was most nervous about because learning IMG, they basically tell
- 29:01Speaker 1: you like your first start's gonna be your best one
- 29:04Speaker 1: or your first two. After that you kind of like
- 29:05Speaker 1: your brain fucks up in your CNS or something. So
- 29:09Speaker 1: it was once I ran that and I got back
- 29:11Speaker 1: to the boys, mim, hey, they're saying four nine right now,
- 29:13Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, I know I'm selling.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel good about it.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Is there a team you felt like you knocked it
- 29:19Speaker 2: out of the park with in the interview process? Oh?
- 29:22Speaker 3: Man, you know what?
- 29:23Speaker 2: Not?
- 29:23Speaker 3: Really? I don't, really, I don't that was I don't
- 29:26Speaker 3: remember that. I thought the stuff with the Panthers went
- 29:28Speaker 3: really good because so Ron Rivera obviously play with the Bears.
- 29:33Speaker 3: My high school road roommate was Mike Morrissey. He was
- 29:37Speaker 3: two years older than I am. I was, and he
- 29:41Speaker 3: was a great older guy. So when we when we
- 29:42Speaker 3: went on trips on the road, he was my roommate
- 29:45Speaker 3: for away games. His dad played with the eighty five
- 29:48Speaker 3: on the eighty five Bears to played with the Bears
- 29:50Speaker 3: like ten years and he played linebacker with with Rivera.
- 29:54Speaker 3: So I remember going to the combine and be like,
- 29:57Speaker 3: I don't know any of these guys, but I know
- 29:59Speaker 3: that Jim Morrissey and Mike Morrisey have said really good
- 30:03Speaker 3: things about coach Rivera and his experience with them and
- 30:06Speaker 3: their friendship and playing together in Chicago. So I'm like,
- 30:08Speaker 3: at least I have one guy that I kind of
- 30:10Speaker 3: have a connection to. So that one was out of
- 30:12Speaker 3: all of them, it was probably the easiest one after
- 30:14Speaker 3: I said how bad my interview was on that video.
- 30:16Speaker 3: But I felt probably the most comfortable with them because
- 30:20Speaker 3: I felt like there was a little bit of a
- 30:21Speaker 3: connection there.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Did you know, did you feel really confident that I
- 30:24Speaker 2: was going to go to Panthers that grabbed you in
- 30:25Speaker 2: the first round.
- 30:27Speaker 3: I thought there was a chance, so you kind of
- 30:28Speaker 3: looked at like teams that I took a visit to Carolina,
- 30:31Speaker 3: so I met with them at the Combine. I took
- 30:32Speaker 3: a visit down there pre draft, and I kind of
- 30:36Speaker 3: knew like nine to fifteen to twenty because fifteen was
- 30:42Speaker 3: Seattle and they drafted Bruce Irving. Bruce Irving and then
- 30:45Speaker 3: they ended up with Bobby in the second round, so
- 30:47Speaker 3: they were going to draft a linebacker. I thought Buffalo
- 30:50Speaker 3: was at ten. I think they drafted Stefan Gilmour from
- 30:56Speaker 3: sc and so I thought it was going to be
- 30:59Speaker 3: one of those teams. I also took a visit to Tennessee,
- 31:03Speaker 3: so I think it was they Actually that was.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but they did draft a linebacker and it was
- 31:09Speaker 2: Zach Brown.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Zach Brown, he was.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he gets.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Dude.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Trent Richardson.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't. I don't know where they drafted what point?
- 31:21Speaker 1: Yeah, scrolled down a little bit. I want to see
- 31:23Speaker 1: what they took.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Are you talking about the Titans?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Kendall?
- 31:27Speaker 2: Right?
- 31:28Speaker 3: Yeah, damn the would have got him anyway, you knew, Yeah.
- 31:34Speaker 1: True should have traded up yea. But yeah, so you
- 31:39Speaker 1: do you did you have any did you have a
- 31:40Speaker 1: place you wanted to go? Like you looked at it.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I thought Carolina would have been cool. I had some
- 31:45Speaker 3: family that was down there. I was familiar. I liked
- 31:47Speaker 3: it because Iran. That was the biggest thing that thought
- 31:50Speaker 3: was cool was that I knew him and they spoke
- 31:54Speaker 3: so highly of him. And he was a linebacker and
- 31:56Speaker 3: he coached like Irlacker and Briggs. Yeah he's with San
- 32:00Speaker 3: Diego names with the Bears. It just it felt I
- 32:03Speaker 3: was like, that'd be a cool place.
- 32:04Speaker 2: How was it when you first got there? How how
- 32:06Speaker 2: was he as a as a coach? Because since you
- 32:10Speaker 2: were a backer.
- 32:11Speaker 3: He was phenomenal. He was like he did a really
- 32:14Speaker 3: good job of separating being the head coach, but also
- 32:19Speaker 3: like he wanted to be a player again, so he'd
- 32:21Speaker 3: be in the locker room, he talk to guys, he
- 32:23Speaker 3: was he'd have you over to the house. He just
- 32:25Speaker 3: made you feel very comfortable. So I always felt like,
- 32:29Speaker 3: you know, he was obviously the head coach, but he
- 32:32Speaker 3: felt like a guy that he just wanted he wanted
- 32:33Speaker 3: to help you. He wanted to put you in a
- 32:35Speaker 3: position to be successful. It was awesome. I couldn't have
- 32:40Speaker 3: been in a better spot as far as just the
- 32:41Speaker 3: people that were there. Sean mcdermo is a defensive coordinator.
- 32:44Speaker 3: I don't think that I could have ended up in
- 32:46Speaker 3: a better system for to play linebacker with that four
- 32:50Speaker 3: down look. I played Mike, which was if I was
- 32:53Speaker 3: playing Will. I was struggled because in space you're matched
- 32:57Speaker 3: up on receivers. It's just bad news. Yeah, but you
- 32:59Speaker 3: can run, Yeah, you can run straight.
- 33:02Speaker 2: But you Julio Jones, did you know he did what
- 33:05Speaker 2: he did? But everybody's getting.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Yeah, there's I'm sure, I'm sure, I'm sure they can
- 33:09Speaker 3: pull a picture of that up.
- 33:14Speaker 2: There.
- 33:14Speaker 3: It is. It's yeah, the right, you know that's that's
- 33:16Speaker 3: not even the best one. There's one that's like two pictures,
- 33:19Speaker 3: three pictures to the right on that search.
- 33:23Speaker 2: That one looks better. That one looks actually, matter of fact,
- 33:27Speaker 2: take me how much higher he is there? Take me
- 33:29Speaker 2: to the ground. He just because you're running with him,
- 33:35Speaker 2: quarters and you're competitive by one.
- 33:37Speaker 3: So it's quarters. And if you have speed at number three,
- 33:41Speaker 3: which Julio definitely accounts for that, you get a backside
- 33:44Speaker 3: the backside quarters defender on the hash helps you out
- 33:47Speaker 3: get your three daggs. Yeah, we called it. We called
- 33:49Speaker 3: it a fat call. But yeah, same thing right now,
- 33:53Speaker 3: you understand my struggle. And they motioned the empty and
- 33:57Speaker 3: I'm like, oh man.
- 34:01Speaker 1: So for the people listening when they motioned empty one.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Now there's no more facts or there's no more help
- 34:06Speaker 1: from that.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, the emotion to emotions.
- 34:09Speaker 3: This looks so this look. You know what Matt Ryan's
- 34:11Speaker 3: saying right here is my guy's just better than all
- 34:14Speaker 3: of you because he looks like he's covered.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, you're you are covering.
- 34:17Speaker 3: So I'm running down the field. I'm like, man, I
- 34:19Speaker 3: am in good shape. They throw that ball and I'm like,
- 34:21Speaker 3: I am in great shape. I can't see him, but
- 34:24Speaker 3: I know he's behind me. I reach up and all
- 34:26Speaker 3: I hear is and it's the ball hitting his hands
- 34:30Speaker 3: and me falling down and my face hitting the ground,
- 34:34Speaker 3: and I just hear the crowd explode and I run
- 34:38Speaker 3: and I and I remember I picked my head up,
- 34:39Speaker 3: and the only thing I remember him seeing is like,
- 34:41Speaker 3: you know when these guys used to score and they
- 34:43Speaker 3: like this as they run the end zone. I just
- 34:46Speaker 3: saw him do that look at me, just face face,
- 34:50Speaker 3: face down, and I'm trying to I'm hearing the crowd
- 34:53Speaker 3: scream right now. And then I picked my head up,
- 34:57Speaker 3: did you? And they right at the end, they show
- 34:58Speaker 3: him kind of right there. That's what I see when
- 35:02Speaker 3: I look up, I see that, I see it, says
- 35:04Speaker 3: I can't even see the name Jones because he's tilted
- 35:07Speaker 3: forward like that. And then I get to the sideline
- 35:10Speaker 3: and my coach is like, hey, you know you're supposed
- 35:13Speaker 3: to be on him, right, I was like, you know,
- 35:15Speaker 3: I was, I know, I was.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Is the craziest.
- 35:19Speaker 1: You're a mic linebacker.
- 35:21Speaker 2: You're coaching Keekley and Julio Jones and scores on a
- 35:23Speaker 2: competitive ball, and you're like, I.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Mean a competitive competitive competitive is a nice way to
- 35:29Speaker 3: say it. I mean it looked competitive, and then when
- 35:32Speaker 3: the ball got thrown that the competition kind of went
- 35:34Speaker 3: out the window a little bit.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Let this play a little bit.
- 35:37Speaker 3: I'm running, he's running like three quarter speed. I'm running
- 35:40Speaker 3: literally as fast as I can, and he's still running
- 35:42Speaker 3: away from me.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Your safety over top was trying to get in on
- 35:45Speaker 2: the action.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I was just I mean, he looks covered right there.
- 35:49Speaker 3: It's he's he's covered, and right he just throws the
- 35:52Speaker 3: ball up for him. Yeah. Look, I'm trying to pull
- 35:55Speaker 3: through the I'm trying to pull through the pocket.
- 35:57Speaker 1: The pocket.
- 35:57Speaker 3: I'm trying to pull through the pocket. He just kind
- 36:00Speaker 3: of big boyed me there a little bit. God.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I mean, you see a guy like Julio Jones.
- 36:05Speaker 3: You know, if you get me, you don't have to
- 36:06Speaker 3: give me excuse. You just say that you got you
- 36:09Speaker 3: got that. That was on Randy Moss's You got Moss
- 36:12Speaker 3: the next week, So you always want to be on
- 36:14Speaker 3: you Got Moss as a little kid. But not for
- 36:16Speaker 3: that reason, not that.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Way at all. Was that?
- 36:19Speaker 1: What is like your toughest play, that the worst moment you've.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Had, the worst?
- 36:24Speaker 2: Was that?
- 36:24Speaker 3: It?
- 36:25Speaker 2: No?
- 36:25Speaker 3: That wasn't it because I kind of felt like the
- 36:28Speaker 3: best I could have done, you know, give effort was strong.
- 36:34Speaker 3: It's just kind of like, hey, hey, man, like just
- 36:37Speaker 3: better than you?
- 36:37Speaker 1: Better for that moment.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Yeah, he's yeah, he's just better. I remember my rookie year,
- 36:41Speaker 3: we were playing Seattle and it was Russ. Russ was
- 36:44Speaker 3: a quarterback. Russ and I trained together at the combine
- 36:47Speaker 3: for the combine. Remember, he breaks contain, He's running to
- 36:52Speaker 3: his right. He breaks contain. Obviously he's running down the field.
- 36:55Speaker 3: I'm in coverage. So he crossed the line of scrimmage.
- 36:58Speaker 3: I'm I was like, I'm gonna crush him. And he's
- 37:01Speaker 3: running and he's running like almost straight at me. I've
- 37:04Speaker 3: got a great angle and he's running like this and
- 37:07Speaker 3: I'm running like that. I'm like, I'm gonna crush him.
- 37:09Speaker 3: The last second, right before about to hit me, puts
- 37:12Speaker 3: his left foot, left foot in the ground and cuts
- 37:14Speaker 3: back this way, and I'm getting ready to just like
- 37:17Speaker 3: fall into the tackle. And I turn and look. Guess
- 37:20Speaker 3: who was running mock five at my face? That rust
- 37:22Speaker 3: set up? Mike Robinson, remember him, Penn State guy. He
- 37:28Speaker 3: he hit me. He hit me so hard that I
- 37:33Speaker 3: don't really I didn't even feel it. It wasn't a
- 37:35Speaker 3: dirty hit. He didn't me in the head. He just
- 37:37Speaker 3: hit me and I just crumpled to the ground. And
- 37:41Speaker 3: I remember like looking up and he just smiled at me,
- 37:46Speaker 3: and I was like, you got me. He's like, I know,
- 37:49Speaker 3: I know. So it was that was that was you
- 37:53Speaker 3: talked about, like welcome to the NFL, your rookie moment.
- 37:56Speaker 3: That was one of them. And then we played, uh
- 38:00Speaker 3: played Tampa my rookie year at home. Was it was
- 38:04Speaker 3: we were up at the end of the game, we
- 38:06Speaker 3: were probably up six or seven points. They ran a
- 38:09Speaker 3: vertical ball, three verticals in cover four and I was
- 38:12Speaker 3: matched up on Vincent Jackson and Josh Freeman throws this
- 38:16Speaker 3: great back shorlder ball to him, and I thought I
- 38:18Speaker 3: had him covered in college. You eat, you're close to him,
- 38:21Speaker 3: he's covered. Yeah, I didn't know. I didn't know what
- 38:24Speaker 3: a back shoulder ball was, and so I'm running with
- 38:27Speaker 3: him and then all of a sudden, he spins. He
- 38:29Speaker 3: opens up and he puts his hands backside and he
- 38:33Speaker 3: catches this football. And I was like, how that happened?
- 38:38Speaker 3: Like somebody stuf. You score a touchdown, they tied it up,
- 38:41Speaker 3: they go to overtime, We lose an overtime. So it
- 38:44Speaker 3: was just like one of those things where you don't
- 38:47Speaker 3: you're just naive and then something happens in a game
- 38:51Speaker 3: and you're like, Oh, that's what they were, that's what
- 38:54Speaker 3: a back shoulder ball was. In that ball, I was.
- 38:56Speaker 3: I mean, I felt like I was in great position,
- 38:58Speaker 3: but the ball was a little perfect. My awareness was zero,
- 39:03Speaker 3: and he just put it on his back shoulder. Of
- 39:05Speaker 3: Vincent Jackson opened up and caught that ball, and I
- 39:08Speaker 3: was like, that sucks.
- 39:11Speaker 2: So did you really not have a TV in your apartment?
- 39:14Speaker 2: You're rookie?
- 39:15Speaker 3: That's so uh? No, I had I had everything. I
- 39:19Speaker 3: had no, the what happened. So what happened? So what
- 39:25Speaker 3: happened was so it happened going into my the the
- 39:30Speaker 3: rumor was going into my second year, I've moved apartments
- 39:34Speaker 3: like and end of July. So then you know, going
- 39:38Speaker 3: into July, you're going in the training camp for the
- 39:40Speaker 3: first like three or four weeks of the season, and
- 39:43Speaker 3: I just it was on the back burner for to
- 39:46Speaker 3: set up cable. I had my Internet set up, but
- 39:48Speaker 3: I was like, I don't need cable for this first
- 39:50Speaker 3: like six eight weeks because I'm never gonna be here.
- 39:52Speaker 3: So I didn't have it set up, and somehow one
- 39:55Speaker 3: of my buddies got wind of it and it just
- 39:57Speaker 3: turned in this It just turned into the this whole thing.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Where so that came from one of your buddies in
- 40:04Speaker 2: the locker room.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Yeah. I came to the locker room like hey, did
- 40:06Speaker 3: you watch Like somebody's like, hey, you've been watching whatever.
- 40:09Speaker 3: I was like, no, I don't have I don't have
- 40:11Speaker 3: the cable set up in my tea in my in
- 40:12Speaker 3: my apartment. Yet they're like why not? Was like, I
- 40:14Speaker 3: just moved. I didn't have time to set it up.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Like we just went to training camp, like I hear
- 40:19Speaker 3: very much anyway, So when I get back from after
- 40:21Speaker 3: training camp, I'll get it set up. So that was
- 40:23Speaker 3: like what had happened. Everyone's like, you didn't have TV.
- 40:26Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm not a psychopath.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Very much. Frame like that. Yeah, which is I just
- 40:32Speaker 1: pictured you in a carpeted room with a blow up mattress. Yeah,
- 40:36Speaker 1: maybe a hyperbaric chamber.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Yeah, just paper plates in a microwave and macaroni and
- 40:40Speaker 3: cheese and ramen microwave.
- 40:41Speaker 1: It takes out too much nutrients.
- 40:43Speaker 3: For Yeah, there it is right there.
- 40:44Speaker 1: God, Yeah, that that is one of the things.
- 40:48Speaker 3: That like, look at that just I mean, that's an
- 40:50Speaker 3: insane throwing catch. And then they went for two. They're down,
- 40:53Speaker 3: they're down, They're down eight. So then they got to
- 40:55Speaker 3: two conversion afterwards and I ran into the goalposts and
- 40:58Speaker 3: that was like insult the injury, Like I just got
- 41:01Speaker 3: I just got worked and I just got crushed by
- 41:04Speaker 3: the post. Watch this, look at my leg. God sucks.
- 41:11Speaker 3: And then you turn around and then you turn and
- 41:13Speaker 3: then you look up and you're like he definitely caught it.
- 41:14Speaker 3: And look at the official. It's like he was waiting
- 41:17Speaker 3: to do that to make sure you were taking a
- 41:19Speaker 3: peek for yeah. Yeah, yeah, he scored.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I was like, nobody touched that ball.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Oh dang, look at me. I'm like, gosh, I suck
- 41:26Speaker 3: good hit flexibility though, or I was twenty one, so
- 41:29Speaker 3: it didn't really matter the defensive player rookie the year though.
- 41:32Speaker 3: But luckily they didn't see that play. Yeah, but how
- 41:35Speaker 3: awesome is that? It was cool? It was fun. I
- 41:37Speaker 3: mean it was uh.
- 41:41Speaker 2: You just.
- 41:43Speaker 3: To have the opportunity to play like that as much
- 41:45Speaker 3: as I did as a rookie was so cool. In
- 41:48Speaker 3: a great system.
- 41:48Speaker 2: It was.
- 41:49Speaker 3: That system was set up for linebackers to just run around.
- 41:52Speaker 3: It was cover three, Cover four, a little bit of man.
- 41:55Speaker 3: We had really good guys in front of us. Our
- 41:56Speaker 3: defensive line was sick, and they called plays that highlighted
- 42:01Speaker 3: the linebackers. So it was Thomas and I. So John Beeson,
- 42:04Speaker 3: I'll talk about who is it Thumper who I talked about? Like,
- 42:06Speaker 3: so go back to college with Hurzlik and Mike mcloffin,
- 42:10Speaker 3: like great older veteran guys that had no their pride
- 42:15Speaker 3: never got in the way. They were just there to
- 42:17Speaker 3: help you. Mike Morrissey, the guy I talked about that
- 42:19Speaker 3: new ron and those guys were so helpful. And then
- 42:22Speaker 3: when I got to Carolina it was the same way.
- 42:23Speaker 3: So when I got there, it was James Anderson was
- 42:27Speaker 3: coming off her career year, Baste was coming back from
- 42:29Speaker 3: an achilles All Pro Pro Bowl or like the dude
- 42:32Speaker 3: in the middle like a stud, and then Thomas was
- 42:35Speaker 3: coming back from his thirty ACL. Thomas at full speed
- 42:38Speaker 3: was what Thomas was for sixteen years in the NFL.
- 42:40Speaker 3: And then me, so there was four of us. I
- 42:44Speaker 3: was the rookie. BS and TD were coming back from
- 42:47Speaker 3: substantial injuries and achilles in an ACL, and then James,
- 42:50Speaker 3: excuse me, was gonna play obviously healthy, had a great
- 42:54Speaker 3: year coming off a good year. So I remember I
- 42:56Speaker 3: showed up my rookie of my first days there. TD
- 42:59Speaker 3: comes in and and he's like, hey, I'm Thomas, here's
- 43:01Speaker 3: my number, lock me in. You need anything, let me know.
- 43:04Speaker 3: And I was like, that's just an older guy coming
- 43:06Speaker 3: in and like checking a box and doing all this stuff.
- 43:10Speaker 3: But it was he was the best helpful, talked you
- 43:14Speaker 3: through things, taught you stuff, where to who to talk
- 43:18Speaker 3: to to, you know, chiropractors, where to just where to
- 43:21Speaker 3: do everything. In Charlotte. He was fantastic. How to practice,
- 43:24Speaker 3: how to be tough, how to play hurt like all
- 43:27Speaker 3: that stuff. And then Beasts was Beascott hurt. Pascott put
- 43:30Speaker 3: on IR. I think after the Atlanta game, my rookie heear,
- 43:34Speaker 3: which was like week or week two or three, and
- 43:36Speaker 3: so then I slid from outside linebacker to inside linebacker
- 43:39Speaker 3: at Mike Beasta spot. And all Beasts ever did was
- 43:42Speaker 3: help me, sat next to me in meetings, talked to me,
- 43:45Speaker 3: watch tape with me. Hey, this is how I this
- 43:47Speaker 3: is how I played cover two, and this is why.
- 43:49Speaker 3: This is what my eyes looked like. There was never
- 43:53Speaker 3: there was never any sense of like you're playing Mike
- 43:57Speaker 3: your first round pick, like I'm hurt. I've been hurt
- 44:00Speaker 3: two years in a row. Maybe there was never like
- 44:03Speaker 3: I'm worried about my job. It was how can I
- 44:05Speaker 3: help you? So I think, you know. I was always
- 44:08Speaker 3: very fortunate to have guys like that through my football
- 44:10Speaker 3: career high school, college and then Beasts and Thomas and
- 44:14Speaker 3: James and a guy named Jordansen who was played with
- 44:18Speaker 3: us for a long time. He was like a could
- 44:20Speaker 3: play all three spots, big time teamer, but was very
- 44:24Speaker 3: and smart, very intelligent, great with his body. He sat
- 44:27Speaker 3: right next to me in the locker room and he
- 44:29Speaker 3: would just all he ever did was just help me.
- 44:31Speaker 3: So I just a great coach with Ron and mcdee
- 44:34Speaker 3: was a decoordinator and then those guys around me. It
- 44:38Speaker 3: was like a perfect situation.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Dude TD had a hell of a career.
- 44:43Speaker 1: And able to come back and play the way yea.
- 44:45Speaker 2: And I met him out at one of the NFL
- 44:48Speaker 2: one of the NFLPA meetings, and this dude you see
- 44:51Speaker 2: like burger and fries and that's was rever. He sits there,
- 44:54Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, are you eating like this throughout the season.
- 44:56Speaker 2: He's like, Oh, I eat whatever I want all the time,
- 44:58Speaker 2: which is buddy, how in the do you do that?
- 45:00Speaker 3: I think some of those guys like that's just they're
- 45:03Speaker 3: more that's just what they're their best at. Like this
- 45:06Speaker 3: is what he plays, this is what he's how his
- 45:08Speaker 3: body reacts the best, and that's what he's gonna do.
- 45:12Speaker 3: But his like six inch snap was un He was
- 45:17Speaker 3: so fast, so explosive snap, ultra physical and just a
- 45:22Speaker 3: great guy to watch as far as how to do things.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Just a dangerous linebacker.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Just tough, high effort, ultra competitive, you know, like all
- 45:33Speaker 3: those things that require no athletic ability. It's all like decisions,
- 45:38Speaker 3: like you know, you are what you are athletically you are,
- 45:41Speaker 3: how high weight, speed, whatever, you make a decision, how
- 45:44Speaker 3: tough you are, how physically you are, how hard you play,
- 45:46Speaker 3: and how much it matters to you, like those are
- 45:49Speaker 3: things that you control, and he was it was great
- 45:52Speaker 3: to see that from an older guy as a young guy, like,
- 45:55Speaker 3: these are non negotiables that you make the decision when
- 45:58Speaker 3: you walk on the field you're gonna do it a
- 45:59Speaker 3: certain way.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds like a great leadership. Yeah, walking and
- 46:03Speaker 1: helping you out on that road. Yeah, that's an unreal
- 46:06Speaker 1: when you you obviously there's such a conversation revolved around
- 46:09Speaker 1: you about like calling out plays and did you already
- 46:11Speaker 1: have that capability to break down film or did those
- 46:14Speaker 1: guys were they a big part of teaching you that stuff.
- 46:15Speaker 3: So I was fortunate in high school. Our high school
- 46:18Speaker 3: coach would bring us down to his office during lunch
- 46:21Speaker 3: and he'd put on a VHS tape and we'd eat
- 46:23Speaker 3: lunch down there and he'd put the tape on the
- 46:25Speaker 3: tape would just run and we could like rewind it
- 46:27Speaker 3: if we wanted to. But then you don't really understand
- 46:30Speaker 3: why you're doing that until you know you're in the
- 46:34Speaker 3: game and you're like, oh, I saw that and when
- 46:38Speaker 3: we were watching tape with coach, and usually it's after
- 46:40Speaker 3: the fact, so it's like very like retrospective. But you
- 46:45Speaker 3: start to figure out, like, oh, I can get a
- 46:47Speaker 3: real advantage by watching tape. So we kind of did
- 46:50Speaker 3: that in high school. And then I got to college
- 46:52Speaker 3: and there's a guy, another guy, Wes Davis. He was
- 46:54Speaker 3: a safety California guy, super smart, intelligent, big tape guy.
- 46:59Speaker 3: So when you get to college, you know it's like
- 47:00Speaker 3: you can you can watch whatever you want. You can
- 47:02Speaker 3: sort it however you want to watch it, personnel formation
- 47:06Speaker 3: down a distance. You know, it is whatever you want.
- 47:08Speaker 3: So I go in there and I'm like this is
- 47:10Speaker 3: too much for me, dand I got to figure out
- 47:12Speaker 3: how to do this. So I would go watch tape
- 47:13Speaker 3: with Wes. This is as a freshman, and you know,
- 47:17Speaker 3: Wes would be in there and he'd be like, all right,
- 47:19Speaker 3: he imagine we're playing Cover four and you get this,
- 47:21Speaker 3: like how you playing it? So you start to figure
- 47:23Speaker 3: out all right, I can match my call up with
- 47:25Speaker 3: the play, so when I watch, when I watch tape,
- 47:27Speaker 3: I can envision myself in that situation. So that was
- 47:30Speaker 3: kind of like the first step. And then the second
- 47:33Speaker 3: step would be Wes would be in meetings and say,
- 47:35Speaker 3: all right, he's like this, this gives us problems in
- 47:39Speaker 3: cover three, and in my head, I'm like, I don't
- 47:41Speaker 3: really know what that means. Bout like sure, So he'd
- 47:44Speaker 3: be like, this is why it gives us problems. He's like,
- 47:46Speaker 3: if I see this look in a game, I'm gonna
- 47:49Speaker 3: let you know and then we'll just kind of play
- 47:51Speaker 3: it like this, you know, you kind of play the
- 47:52Speaker 3: play a little bit. And he's like, all right, i'm
- 47:54Speaker 3: gonna give you heads up in the game when we're
- 47:56Speaker 3: gonna get it. He's like, I'm gonna tell you when
- 47:57Speaker 3: to play it a certain way and we'll being good jape.
- 47:59Speaker 3: I was like great. So then comes up in a game,
- 48:02Speaker 3: Wes gives me like a nod and I'm like, hey,
- 48:06Speaker 3: you know, I like give him a nod back because yeah, hey,
- 48:10Speaker 3: what's up, And the play would happened and I would
- 48:13Speaker 3: just be aloof and be like, I gave you a nod.
- 48:17Speaker 3: I was like, I gave you one back. He's like, no,
- 48:20Speaker 3: that was it. So then just slowly, over time you're like, okay,
- 48:24Speaker 3: now I understand why he's watching tape. So you watch tape,
- 48:28Speaker 3: you understand situations, and you pick stuff up and you
- 48:31Speaker 3: accumulate knowledge, and over time you just understand, like, this
- 48:35Speaker 3: is how teams really want to run the football, This
- 48:37Speaker 3: is how it matches up against our defense. These are
- 48:40Speaker 3: the top formations. I mean, you know how it is.
- 48:42Speaker 3: It's like if it's two by two and the tight
- 48:45Speaker 3: ends on the line of scrimmers, their top ron concepts
- 48:47Speaker 3: are probably this, this and this right. And once you
- 48:52Speaker 3: know that, then it's like, all right, So if we're
- 48:54Speaker 3: in an overfront and they run that first run play
- 48:58Speaker 3: and we're in this defense, who's gonna to block me? Okay,
- 49:01Speaker 3: this guy's gonna block me. All right. Say they run
- 49:03Speaker 3: the other play and this same defense, same front, Boom this,
- 49:05Speaker 3: Now this guy's gonna block me. And you go through that,
- 49:08Speaker 3: and then when practice rolls around you get it. And
- 49:10Speaker 3: then when the game rolls around, it's like, all right,
- 49:12Speaker 3: here's my formation, here's my my, my, my call on defense,
- 49:16Speaker 3: this is how we're lined up, the ball gets snapped,
- 49:19Speaker 3: I get my one read from whoever I'm reading Boom.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Now I know who's gonna block me. I know where
- 49:23Speaker 3: the ball is gonna go. I have to beat that
- 49:25Speaker 3: guy in the run game, whoever's gonna block me, and
- 49:27Speaker 3: then I'm clean to the football. You know, one guy's
- 49:29Speaker 3: blocking you on each play. So if I know top
- 49:31Speaker 3: run concepts, I know how it fits within our defense.
- 49:33Speaker 3: I know where I line, I know where my stressors are.
- 49:36Speaker 3: The ball gets snapped, I read Boom. Now I know
- 49:38Speaker 3: who's gonna block me. Now I have now I already
- 49:40Speaker 3: have a plan of attack. Well, how I'm gonna get
- 49:41Speaker 3: after him before the ball gets snapped. So then you're
- 49:44Speaker 3: playing the game before the ball gets snapped, and then
- 49:46Speaker 3: everything just slows down as the ball gets snapped. So
- 49:50Speaker 3: I it was just because you got to like, you
- 49:53Speaker 3: know what is you gotta This is a bad play
- 49:54Speaker 3: right here. So I remember exactly this play. So Andy Gallax,
- 49:59Speaker 3: the center you guys ran and it was like a
- 50:00Speaker 3: split zone. Look, split zone. Hang on, we're in man
- 50:03Speaker 3: coverage and we're in it's an in and out, so
- 50:07Speaker 3: safety down here. Yeah, So TD and I are like
- 50:09Speaker 3: the in and out guys. So my guy goes back
- 50:11Speaker 3: across the formation at the tight end. I got to
- 50:13Speaker 3: fall back in a pass in pass game, but if
- 50:16Speaker 3: it's a run, I got to stay front side. So
- 50:18Speaker 3: it was a run. I see the guy go back
- 50:21Speaker 3: across the formation. I fall back, and this ball stays
- 50:23Speaker 3: front side. And look where it hits. I get blocked
- 50:26Speaker 3: by I think Andy Gallax. The center's a BC guy.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Looks where it gets hit, probably right where it should be.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Kind of a disaster. Who's yeah, yeah, yeah, so disaster.
- 50:36Speaker 3: This is a touchdown. I mean the dexter mccluster on
- 50:39Speaker 3: this touchdown here.
- 50:40Speaker 1: So was this twenty fifteen?
- 50:42Speaker 2: Yeah, we were bad then too. How would you three
- 50:45Speaker 2: and thirteen year for us? How did your prep develop
- 50:48Speaker 2: like in the league, like a you are how are
- 50:50Speaker 2: you breaking down each day like on Monday or you
- 50:52Speaker 2: first second down?
- 50:53Speaker 3: Yeah, run conflict. So like Monday was so you know, Monday,
- 50:57Speaker 3: you come in, you get a workout, flush, watch the
- 51:00Speaker 3: watch the game from the night before and kind of
- 51:02Speaker 3: our day before whatever, make your corrections, and then I'd
- 51:06Speaker 3: always watch two first halves of the team that we
- 51:09Speaker 3: were playing and just get like general feel and I
- 51:12Speaker 3: always feel like first halves for better because you got
- 51:15Speaker 3: to you got to feel for who they were, right,
- 51:17Speaker 3: So I think about or like think about, like, say
- 51:19Speaker 3: we're watching We're watching the Titans, and I watched the
- 51:23Speaker 3: whole game. Maybe in the second half, you guys are
- 51:24Speaker 3: up big, and so now you guys are running the
- 51:27Speaker 3: ball a little bit more. Maybe the past game is
- 51:29Speaker 3: not as aggressive. They're different than what they want to
- 51:32Speaker 3: be coming out right first in the first half, like
- 51:34Speaker 3: your first fifteen, your first probably twenty five plays or
- 51:37Speaker 3: things that you guys have really thought about, your top
- 51:39Speaker 3: concept stuff like that. So I'd watch two first halfs
- 51:42Speaker 3: and just get a feel for, like, you know, what
- 51:44Speaker 3: do they look like up front? You know, are they
- 51:46Speaker 3: like for example, we play the Falcons, right, Alex Mack
- 51:51Speaker 3: like big, athletic, smart, ranging, really good player, Like damn,
- 51:56Speaker 3: I got my work cut out for this guy. And
- 51:57Speaker 3: then you go, you know, in the backfield, it was
- 52:00Speaker 3: Tevin Coleman. He's like big, kind of a slasher, like
- 52:04Speaker 3: one cut wide zone type guy. Devonte Freeman is like
- 52:08Speaker 3: a little bit of shake good burst, could run physical,
- 52:11Speaker 3: not a real big guy but gets lost and like
- 52:13Speaker 3: is a firm really good. I thought he was really
- 52:15Speaker 3: good and if he could speed you up, slowly down,
- 52:18Speaker 3: run through you, and then you look on the outside
- 52:21Speaker 3: of Austin Hooper was the tight end. And then it
- 52:24Speaker 3: was like Roddy White and Julio Jones. You're like, all right, boom,
- 52:27Speaker 3: so like this is how they look up front, this
- 52:30Speaker 3: is what they look like in the backfield. Like, you know,
- 52:31Speaker 3: we play the Falcons. You don't really need to watch
- 52:33Speaker 3: mad a whole lot because you got a really good
- 52:35Speaker 3: feel for We played him twice a year. He's he's
- 52:38Speaker 3: Matt Ryan. You know, you know, need to take a
- 52:40Speaker 3: ton of notes on that, but you get a feel
- 52:41Speaker 3: for all right, Kyle Shanahan, wide zone shifts and motions.
- 52:45Speaker 3: They're going to try to get you in a compromise position.
- 52:47Speaker 3: They went to run the ball to the bubble. So
- 52:49Speaker 3: that's Monday, and just it's like click through like click
- 52:52Speaker 3: through stuff real quick. Tuesday.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Are you a big notes guy or are you just notes?
- 52:55Speaker 3: Because that helps me if I write it, then it
- 52:57Speaker 3: helps me remember.
- 52:58Speaker 1: And this Monday, you're not necessarily take knows you're just
- 53:00Speaker 1: feeling the game. Yeah, feeling the process.
- 53:02Speaker 2: Of the game.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and feel them and like I'll write down some
- 53:05Speaker 3: notes like if they've got a dude that I'm not
- 53:08Speaker 3: used to playing against, or I haven't seen a lot
- 53:09Speaker 3: of them, Like this is like offensive line moves really well.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Center fifty one is a really good player. Running backs,
- 53:15Speaker 3: this is how these guys feel because I always felt
- 53:18Speaker 3: like with running backs, if you don't play against them
- 53:21Speaker 3: a lot, you don't know how they like feel on contact.
- 53:24Speaker 3: And I didn't like that, Like I want to know
- 53:27Speaker 3: early in the game, how do you feel you firm
- 53:30Speaker 3: like stuff like that, And I felt like that was
- 53:33Speaker 3: one thing that I always wanted to watch during the
- 53:34Speaker 3: week is how do they run? How do they take contact?
- 53:36Speaker 3: Do they like contact? Like are they a stiff arm
- 53:39Speaker 3: guy or they what do they like doing? Because then
- 53:41Speaker 3: in the game you got to have a plan. I mean,
- 53:43Speaker 3: you'll play Marshawn Lynch. You can't just like run in
- 53:45Speaker 3: there and I hope you're gonna get them on the ground.
- 53:47Speaker 3: So then I would take light notes on that and
- 53:50Speaker 3: just get a feel because mentally, I was like Monday
- 53:52Speaker 3: was a day where I'm like I need to kind
- 53:54Speaker 3: of break it up a little bit. So if I
- 53:57Speaker 3: took a ton of notes, I'm like, this is just
- 53:58Speaker 3: too much mentally. Then Tuesday you come in, hit a
- 54:01Speaker 3: little workout, and then I'd watch run games. So our
- 54:04Speaker 3: coaches did a good job of breaking down run game
- 54:06Speaker 3: based on like formation, down a distance, excuse me, top concepts,
- 54:12Speaker 3: and then I would go and highlight like four games
- 54:16Speaker 3: and then you know, you can sort everything, So i'd
- 54:18Speaker 3: sort it by like personnel. It's like, all right, I
- 54:21Speaker 3: want to I want to see all their twelve personnel runs,
- 54:23Speaker 3: and then like, how do they run the ball to
- 54:24Speaker 3: twelve personnel? So three by one is it two by two?
- 54:27Speaker 3: Do they like running twelve personnel and putting the t
- 54:30Speaker 3: the tight end in the backfield? Because if so, now
- 54:33Speaker 3: it turns into like two back run versus like if
- 54:36Speaker 3: they're in a wing or double like ace both on
- 54:40Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage. Now it's like one back run twelve. Yeah,
- 54:44Speaker 3: so it's like a completely different concept. So I want
- 54:46Speaker 3: to know what they do, and then I would break
- 54:47Speaker 3: it down by like personnel, group, then formation, and then
- 54:51Speaker 3: top concepts inside the formation. I'd take notes on all
- 54:54Speaker 3: those and just chart it, cause like it took a
- 54:56Speaker 3: lot of time, but I felt like if I could
- 54:57Speaker 3: write it down, then I would remember it. Better, so
- 55:00Speaker 3: then and by Tuesday I usually had I usually had
- 55:04Speaker 3: the game plan like first and second dound game plan,
- 55:06Speaker 3: So then I'd watch all that chart everything, watch those games,
- 55:09Speaker 3: and then I'd watch a full game after that and
- 55:13Speaker 3: then see how it fits, so like when do they
- 55:16Speaker 3: run it? Like when are they eleven, when are they twelve?
- 55:18Speaker 3: What are they like doing out of thirteen? When do
- 55:20Speaker 3: they do it in a game? And like what's the
- 55:22Speaker 3: game flow? And then you could call I could call
- 55:25Speaker 3: defenses within that within that watching that game, so you know,
- 55:29Speaker 3: first and ten the first quarter, like all right, I
- 55:32Speaker 3: was gonna play cover three, So line up and cover three,
- 55:35Speaker 3: see my overfront, See where I got a line, see
- 55:37Speaker 3: where rotation is, and then kind of go through it
- 55:39Speaker 3: that way, and then you know, just kind of buzz
- 55:42Speaker 3: through it like that. So then you get a feel
- 55:44Speaker 3: for how they want to run the ball out of formations.
- 55:46Speaker 3: You get a good feel for what they are, and
- 55:48Speaker 3: then you see how it applies to the game and
- 55:51Speaker 3: how they get to stuff. And then I can apply
- 55:53Speaker 3: our first and second down game plan to that and
- 55:56Speaker 3: just run through that. And then Wednesday, after practice, I'd
- 56:01Speaker 3: do the same thing, but with first and second down pass,
- 56:03Speaker 3: So break it down the same way and see how
- 56:09Speaker 3: the run game matches with pass.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Game, what conflicts you could potential.
- 56:12Speaker 3: What conflicts, And then like you start to figure out,
- 56:14Speaker 3: like are they a formation based team in the sense
- 56:17Speaker 3: of do they run plays, run plays and pass plays
- 56:21Speaker 3: out of formations? So regardless what the personnel is, Like,
- 56:24Speaker 3: if it's three by one wing, they could run that
- 56:27Speaker 3: at eleven, they could run it at twelve, they could
- 56:29Speaker 3: run out of thirteen, They could run it at ten
- 56:30Speaker 3: if they wanted. But it's the same run concept and
- 56:34Speaker 3: they're just looking for the best matchup within personnel groupings
- 56:37Speaker 3: that run that run play. Or are they a personnel
- 56:40Speaker 3: group team where in eleven these are their top five
- 56:43Speaker 3: run concepts, and then in twelve they want to run this,
- 56:45Speaker 3: and then thirteen they start getting heavy. It's like short yardage.
- 56:48Speaker 3: They're going to play too heavy a wing and a
- 56:49Speaker 3: backside tight end and it's going to be like load
- 56:52Speaker 3: power counter o. Why three poolers going somewhere? Or are
- 56:56Speaker 3: they just like I said, a formation based team. So
- 56:58Speaker 3: then as the week goes on, you get a feel
- 57:00Speaker 3: for what this team wants to do, why they want
- 57:02Speaker 3: to do it, how they get to it. Are they
- 57:03Speaker 3: a shift motion team? Do they build sets? Because the
- 57:07Speaker 3: only thing that matters in football is what's the final formation?
- 57:10Speaker 3: So are they stagnant or do they line up in
- 57:12Speaker 3: three by one and then shift to two by two
- 57:15Speaker 3: and then motion this guy across to three by one.
- 57:17Speaker 3: I don't care about any of that. I just want
- 57:19Speaker 3: to know results. What's the final result of the formation
- 57:21Speaker 3: is what I want to get to and how they
- 57:22Speaker 3: do it. So when the game comes around, you're not like, oh,
- 57:26Speaker 3: well it's three by one. But I didn't anticipate them
- 57:29Speaker 3: get into it at Like, no, I already knew that
- 57:32Speaker 3: they're gonna be a heavy shift, heavy motion. My brain's
- 57:34Speaker 3: already turned onto it. So when they get to when
- 57:37Speaker 3: they start to move guys, it's like I've already prepared
- 57:39Speaker 3: myself for this. And then third down you just watch
- 57:42Speaker 3: it by you know, down the distance and then watch
- 57:47Speaker 3: another game and see kind of out all ties together.
- 57:49Speaker 3: And then Friday was red Zone and special So like
- 57:52Speaker 3: if we were playing you know, cal or Alvin Kamara, like,
- 57:58Speaker 3: you can get a lot of matchups on one of
- 58:00Speaker 3: them if we play man coverage, Like I don't.
- 58:01Speaker 2: I don't like that matchup you'll be able to get
- 58:04Speaker 2: the rat in this situation, or like stay in the box.
- 58:06Speaker 3: And if I get put in a bad situation, I
- 58:09Speaker 3: need to have a plan of attack of like does
- 58:11Speaker 3: he like moving off a certain foot, how does he stem?
- 58:14Speaker 3: Where does he get uncomfortable? Where does his move area
- 58:16Speaker 3: out of the backfield? Where does he like going? And
- 58:21Speaker 3: then so when you get in that situation, if it's man,
- 58:24Speaker 3: you're like, all right, Like, he's a better athlete than me.
- 58:27Speaker 3: He's henna probably make me miss a bunch, But like,
- 58:29Speaker 3: here's my plan of attack that I've already thought about
- 58:31Speaker 3: on Friday. So when it comes around in the game,
- 58:33Speaker 3: you're like, all right, I'm good, Like, yeah, this is
- 58:36Speaker 3: my plan of attack, and like I feel good about it,
- 58:38Speaker 3: and I'm going to go attack him and if it works, great,
- 58:40Speaker 3: If not, like I feel good about what I did
- 58:43Speaker 3: going into the game.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Yeah, how big of a role did the TV copy?
- 58:47Speaker 3: Love? TV copy?
- 58:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 58:48Speaker 1: The TV copy is that where you found the checks
- 58:50Speaker 1: and oh yeah, stuff like that.
- 58:52Speaker 3: So you just I would just watch like the All
- 58:55Speaker 3: twenty two and then anytime the quarterback comes to the
- 58:57Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, you turn on the TV copy and
- 59:01Speaker 3: see what you got everything that he says. You got
- 59:04Speaker 3: to listen to it and write it down, and then
- 59:06Speaker 3: you got to check it a few times.
- 59:09Speaker 2: You know, you remember any teams that were changing their
- 59:11Speaker 2: verbiage because they essentially knew that they were playing against you.
- 59:14Speaker 3: No, if I didn't, if I didn't, if I didn't
- 59:17Speaker 3: know a word, I never guessed. But like you always
- 59:21Speaker 3: have to, it's always just like it's a n TD.
- 59:24Speaker 2: It was probably like salt pepper.
- 59:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that tells yeah, salt and pepper. So that was
- 59:30Speaker 3: was used in the Super Bowl, and I thought salt
- 59:32Speaker 3: was left and pepper was right because salt isn't and
- 59:36Speaker 3: pepper was right because they.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Had white black they had background there in a black
- 59:41Speaker 2: line background.
- 59:41Speaker 5: They had salt, salt, salt, you're white. Hey my head,
- 59:46Speaker 5: it looks like hey, something on the same page with you.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Because inside inside that game, so inside the game, they
- 59:57Speaker 3: said like Tiger and and Paradis. Matt Parrotis was the
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: center and he and he said Tiger Tiger, and one
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: of the offensive lineman was like huh and he said
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: tiger er. I was like, ah, you're going to the right.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: So I took that forward to salt and Pepper, and
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: I remember having an argument with TD about it, and
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: we get in the sideline and I'm like, I don't
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: know why they called Pepper, and they and they went
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: to you. I was on the right side or whatever,
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: the left side, they're right, And He's like, no, you
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: missed the whole thing, Salt, you're white Pepper. I was like, ah,
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: it makes sense now, even the crafty Oh my gosh,
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: it's so funny man.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: So I mean, yeah, there's definitely like a crazy amount
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: of you calling out those plays, Like what do you
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: think your batting percentage was on those?
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: I think if you feel good about it, Like I
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: remember we played Tampa in twenty fifteen and they had
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: a toss play and it was Tulsa and I remember
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: we were it was a check they talked about. We
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: were it was like on a third down maybe, and
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: we were all mugged up. So Thomas and I were
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: both mugged up. We had a safety mugged up, so
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: we were you know, if they had and they had
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: a they had a front side bunch and so if
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: they if you just down bock pin and pool the
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: off the ball defenders that are supposed to make the
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: play are never going to get there. It's like throwing
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: a screen out of a mug, look like a wide
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: receiver screen. And I remember he gets there and Jamis
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: comes up and looks around and he's like, all right,
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: we got double mug. All these guys in the line
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: of scrimmage. Safety's down showing off the backside, the rotational guy,
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: and the nickel showing up because it's a bunch because
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: he's got to press the point. And he checks Tulsa
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh my gosh, perfect yeah, and said
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: we pull we pull everybody out and bump everyone plus
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: everyone front side just totally get out of the blitz.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: We're supposed to be dropping defensive tackles. It was like
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: a sim pressure and we just told all the defense
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: I'm like, go, don't drop, it's a run, it's a toss.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: Go And one of the guys, I think Jared Allen
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: made the tackle and I just I was so happy,
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: like it all worked. You know, you get that one play,
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: get that one play you make based on film, and
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: you're just like, yeah, it's all worth it.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, all the preparation was worth it for sure.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: And TD was great at that TD watched a ton
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: of tape too, so we had to get a little combo.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: When you get to those games, the amount of preparation
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: you put in, know, like album Kamara, when you're like this,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna attack him. So I know regardless, like my
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: process has been correct. Yeah, did you have nerves before
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: the games or was it like Hey's in the Barn.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: I was always nervous. Yeah, like you want to You
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: always want to get in the flow as fast as
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: you can of the game. And the longer you're out
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: of the flow of the game, the less you feel
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: like you're a part of the game.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: So you can prepare all you want, but you you
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: want to get into the flow of the game as
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: quickly as you can. And if you're not in the flow,
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: you feel like your flow and I hate that. So
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: you're always nervous to go in the game because you
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: don't know. Each game feels different, like it feels different
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: from you know, the surface is different, how the team
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: you play is different, the coordinators are different, how they
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: want to tack you is different, the players are different,
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: the run game is different. Like everything feels different each game,
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: and you were always like I don't know about nervous
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: or you're anxious to like feel feel the game and
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: be and feel like you're a part of the game.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: And until you do that, you're kind of like, damn,
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: like I need to need to get in there.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: You need to get in there, need to feel someone,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: You need to like a little action early in the game.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: With with that thought process, was it better for you
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: in your mind to go three and out your first
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: defensive drive, like oh boys, we got the three and out,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: or like a nine eight nine play gritty drive where
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: maybe they come out points, but like you know, the kid,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: this next drive, I'm gonna I feel like I'm immersed
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: in this game now, so I feel a whole lot better.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: I think it depends on if you get if you
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: get a piece of something early.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Y, Yeah, you got to get a piece of something,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Like if.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: You make a good tackle like on first or second
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: or third down, or like first or second down, you
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: make a you make a good play like around the
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: line of scrimmage in the run game, you're like, all right,
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: I got like kind of I'm good, or like you
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: get like you make a good play on third down,
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: you get a stop, we're off the field in like
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: a three and out or you know you're just you're
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: in the mix, or like you feel to say, they're
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: on power and you like you like stick a guard
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: and you force a guard. You're like, all right, I'm
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: in good shape. But if it's like pass toss, run
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: away incomplete on third down, you're still like like itch
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: in a little bit. Yeah, you need to get like
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: you need to get you need to get a piece
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: of something.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you need to feel somebody.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about the pain from from the Super Bowl? Yeah,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: and have you forgiven Cam Newton for not jumping on
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: that phone?
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. It was. The further you get away
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: from it, the more you appreciate it. Like how special
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: that year was, how much fun we had, how good
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: our locker room was, Like all the games that we
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: played in that were so fun that the city of
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Charlotte was awesome. Like the media coverage of that season
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: in the locker room, it was like anybody that was
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: anybody reporter wise, was in the locker room every week.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: We didn't lose a game until Christmas. We played on Thursday.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: We played, Yeah, here we go. Played on Thursday night
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: in Jerry World down in Dallas on Thanksgiving.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: Oh buddy, I'm sorry to interrupt. Yeah, that was my
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: favorite game to watch of you.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: I'm I'm like, you're like a proud father and I'm
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: your son. It's you just got like comfortable.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Yeah, because we'll talk to the Cowboys. He usually has
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: a dim light on it, so it's nice to see.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: Him light up with the Cowboys just as a backer
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: and appreciating and respecting the game that we played, Like
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: watching getting to watch that Thursday night football game, because again,
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: you're not like watching everybody else like when you're playing
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: on Sundays, but knowing that you had there was dedicated
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: time like on holidays to where it's like, oh, these
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: teams are playing today and watching you against the Cowboys
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: those two ploy those two picks you had back to back.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: I've sat there and I was trying to get everybody
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: in the room enthralled, like, do you guys understand what
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: just happened? You being a Tampa two player and them
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: trying to run you out, clear you out for that
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: deep dagger by one and you coming down to pick
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: it off after you already have your responsibility taken care of.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: That is art.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: You're coming back, coming back the next series, and knowing
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: you're in a cover four responsibility with wit as the
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: tight end and they're trying you over the top without
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: any safety help, and you picking that ball off, getting
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: your head around. That's art, and I just want.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: You to know that you should to hang around me
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: and talk me up a little more.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Obviously you have all the accomplishments in the world, but
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: just like some of those plays and you just talking
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: through Tulsa knowing you're mugged up and everything else, I
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: appreciate the art that.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: You put on display. Was it was. I appreciate that
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: this Yah.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, I'm getting up right now. But these plays
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: right here, boys like you, guys want to lock in.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: The guy that made the play was Thomas. So we
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: were in a sim pressure So basically what was supposed
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: to happen is TD was supposed to blitz and we
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: were supposed to drop the defensive end to the field.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: So Romo saw the pressure, so he's like, all right,
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: the hook player. It was just simple pressure Cover three.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: The hook player is a defensive end, so I'm gonna
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: throw this dig right behind the defensive end. So Romo,
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Romo checks protection, swings everything, and so Thomas is like,
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: do we need to get out of this? They just
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: push protection to me, it's a bad matchup, so he checked.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: Thomas looks at me, He's like, hey, we need to
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: check cover two. I was like, all right, cool, let's
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: do it.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: So who's at the green dot?
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: I did, but Thomas and I and like Roman and
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: Kirk Coleman. It was like, it's just a discussion. It's
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: a discussion.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Crazy that you guys have enough time to have a
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: discussion as well, that's wild.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: TD and I had like a hey, he's like he
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: just micd it. You want to go to cover two?
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: And I was like you want too, He's like yeah.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: I was like all right, cool, check cover two. So
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: like you've got time. And then this play is like
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: one of those plays that you talked about, like you
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: always want to get this play in cover two and
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: it never works out that way, like either you're a
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: backside player or you're blitzing, or it's man coverage, and
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: it's just one of those plays where it's just right place,
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: right time, like it happens and you're taking a shot.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you're like you're you're you're trusting. Look at Witt,
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: Look at Whitney's.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he's wide open. But again, you're trusting, You're you're trusting.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Can you go back to the top of the play.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: And a lot of it starts too with.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: It's like you starting high and trusting that all right,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Romo's went through this progression and where now I'm going
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: to take a shot and leave the middle of the
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: field to go pick off.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: And then stagger. The other thing is ben so ben
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: a ben Wickery is playing. He's one of our corners.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: He's playing at the I think this same at the
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: bottom of the screen. If you don't get a good
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: jam on that guy, then I can't see the release.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: So the release by one if he inside releases and
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: you get a clear out and then a sit look
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: at the jam. Do you see the jam by Bene?
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: So the jam slows it down.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: This is what we're talking about.
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he gets the good jam, pushes him inside and
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: puts those two guys on levels and slows him down.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: So the progression for Romo is slower, right, So he
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: doesn't get to dot that ball when he wants to.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: But I get to see inside release by one, I
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: can see the sit by two. And then once he
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: puts his foot in the ground. I'm like, all right,
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: I'm clean, Like I'm good because I know that once
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: his inside release, his company's probably gonna run an cut
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: and that's going to push Roman to that over right.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: So then you're like all right. But then you're like
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: you said, you're kinda you're kind of taking like a
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: calculated chance.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so is as the mic backer you have the
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: middle of the field, I mean, yeah, Tampa two, you
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: see had a bailout and you're deep.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Yeah, in his backs to the quarterback. So again he's
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: taking like a calculated wrist just coming out of the
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: middle of the field. And so it's funny the whole player,
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: you know, he's it's like you're jumping the fat lady
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: when the pretty ones behind him.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Why at that point are you like, okay, I'm safe,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: because you know your safety is now coming back over
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: the top to help you.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Out, and you kind of know, you kind of know
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: where that ball is meant to be thrown. The ball
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: is meant to be thrown to the dig gotcha.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: So his romo in his mind is still thinking, you
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: guys are in a simulated pressure where the end's going
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: to drop, and that guy's covering him.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: I think he probably knows at this point that we're not.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: I just think he probably is, like, all I got,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: I got Tampa. The the hook player jumped the little
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: in and out route, the whip route, so I'm just
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: gonna throw it behind right, So I had a little
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: bit more time to kind of field out because Bene
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: got such a good jam. He slowed the progress so
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: that guy really got him inside. So like it's it's
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: one of those things like you don't just make the
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: play by yourself, really good jam. We had really good
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: pressure that whole that whole game. We hit him a bunch,
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: so like that clock gets sped up, and then Thomas
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: great awareness by him of like getting out of that.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you have incredible quarterback answers of shouting out the.
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: Team the entire course. I mean, he's right.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: It's like when what Romo scene is, like he knows
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: as the hook player sitting there, He's like, oh, this
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: is one hundred out of one hundred, I'm gonna hit
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: this clear, hit this dig over because.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: You can see right here even with you covering the
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: standway like that almost seems a little open to me,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: But he's right here. Yeah, and that where him He's like, oh,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: there's no one because he's expecting you to still.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: Go up because because avoid in the middle of the field,
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: Nickel is moving out towards that whip, so that ball
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: is supposed to get thrown between the numbers in the
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: hash right that dig yes, the dig window. So he's like,
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: I'm in good shape, you know.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: And I'm sure we're not able to show the screen
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: like during the YouTube, So anybody that's curious, it's Tony
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: Romo throws an interception to Luke Keekley looked at play up.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you'll be able to show because that is that
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: is art, Like, that's the beauty, that's the game within
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: the game. That kind of like people will see and like, wow,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Luke was amazing. But for you to like give us
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: what TD was saying the jam all that like, that
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: is that's good football. Eleven guys getting.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you know we had time. He bumped him and
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: put him inside and gave me more time. It's like
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: this is happening in four seconds.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Yes, which is just so crazy because you're not supposed
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: to be anywhere near that ball when it's thrown.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just all it's quitl It just all fits
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: it like all fits together, you know.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Was there And I hate to bring this up again,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: any chatter about Newton not jumping on that fumble.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: Honestly, no one ever said, No one ever whispered, no,
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: his his toughness. We never questioned it. The guy never
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: never complained. It's the first guy in every day. He
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: worked so hard, never never yelled at guys, never threw
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: guys under the bus. Like you talk about a dude
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: that just all he wants to do is play football.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: And it's just that was just a bad game for us.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: We just didn't play. We didn't play our best game.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: The Seeing Cam Newton on the field, there's like there's
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: like a few guys Calvin Johnson comes to mind, but
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: seeing Cam Newton dressing on the field, he looks creative player. Yeah,
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: he's like an action figure out.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: He's like all of six five.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Everybody, well, he's taller than six five. We saw him
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: at Power Slap and he was eye to eye with me.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I feel like he was taller.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Must get that.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: He's like he was like he's like seven feet tall.
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: With all that.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt he's not getting any rides. But That's
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: interesting you say that because the way he's portrayed in
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the media is that like he's a cat that seems
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: like a very much an eye guy. Well that like
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: when he's when he's on ESPN, he said I would
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: rather have my MVP trophy than a super Bowl trophy.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I'm not getting that same Bob as I'm getting from
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: you were.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: Like, he would you give up your Defensive Player of
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: the Years for that super Bowl?
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: Yeah? The super Bowl is like the Mecca. Man, Yeah,
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: you know that's all you want question You just want
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: to win a super Bowl.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: But he looked at you like you were dumb right there.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Tell you what toughness, competitiveness, love of the game of football,
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: love of the Carolina Panthers, like Cam just tough. You
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: never questioned is he going to play hard? Like you
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: never question that. You might question, like what is he
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: gonna wear? But the dude competed, he played so hard,
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: loves football, just tough and competitive and.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: It just it also clearly he knew what was going on.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: But it's like that, h what is it that clip
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: of that play where somebody's trying to call out something,
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: somebody trying to call something what you're trying to do.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Yeah, oh you like that. Watch this?
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Oh that was clay Man.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Because Clay's watched that wheel. Oh you watched film too.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: Watch this and he threw that ball to McCaffrey. But
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: it's interesting. So Cam, it's like he he can. He
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: remembers like everything. So they had a signal. Him and
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: Greg had a signal for like it's like a route
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: that he ran and Cam's like, hey, dude, like we
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: got to switch it up. We've run this too many times,
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: like everybody knows what it is. And Greg's like, all right,
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: what do you want it to be? And Cam's like, ah,
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: I don't know. We did this like four years ago
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: and against Atlanta and it was like the third quarter
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: and you know it was like ten minutes ago in
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: the game and ten minutes to go and third quarter,
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: and I gave you like this signal like I don't know,
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: that's cool, we just want to do that. Greg's like whatever, yeah,
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: And like I like went and looked it up and
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: I was like whoa, Like he was spot on. He
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: was like pretty dagon close. Yeah. So but him and
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: Greg had a really good, good connection, Like Greg has
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: such a great feel for you know, space and timing
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: and windows and just he was really good at a
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: lot of things. Great. He was big, he'd catch everything,
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: could run, block, never came off the field. But he
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: had such a good feel for like where to be,
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: how to get there, how to stem guys like he
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: was so good at that. And Cam and him had
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: such a great connection that they could just kind of
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: look at each other and they both knew what was
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: going on. They'd line up in this set. It was
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: a three by one set, so Greg they called it
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: one by three. Greg was backside and you could line
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: up and cover three or cover four, it didn't matter.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: It was basically man because it was just Greg in
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: a corner or a safety by themselves and they just
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: look at each other and figure it out. And it
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: was really cool to watch. But a lot of it
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: was just Cam's super smart remembers everything tough, competitive, and
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: it was fun to watch him and Greg play with
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: each other.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: How was it being in the mix of the Odell
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: Beckham and Josh Norman.
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, that was like peak Josh. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: And that was part of Josh's game. I remember when
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: we played Dallas, him and Dez are going out of
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: the whole game. And that was part of Josh's game.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: And you know.
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: It was we were in it and they let and
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: I'll tell you what, they let those guys play a
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: little bit until there was a couple. There was like
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: one or two instances where like they had to separate them.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Odell had to head missile shot.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: That was that was that one wasn't great, but that
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: Josh was another guy. Josh great feel, great feel, smart,
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: unbelievable ball skills in ultra competitive, ultra competitive. So that
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: was a great matchup for them. Josh played fantastic that year.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: Josh was exactly what we needed in our defense, like
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: long rangey, great ball skills, could compete competitive. He was
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: really good and that that was an interesting game. We
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: were up a million points and they came all the
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: way back. Odell actually caught a ball there at the
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: end of the game to tie it up and then
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: Cam went down and I'm gonna kick the field with
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: to win it. But it was like we were there there,
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: Josh and I having a good chat here.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: He tried tell him to keep his cool.
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: I like, hey, keep doing you man.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, we had him at Washington. He's his ability to
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: punch the ball out, the Peanut punch.
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: He learned it from Peanut, So Josh, Josh was always
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: around the ball. Then Peanut came in twenty fifteen and
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: Josh was like his Josh, I think saw that and
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: he's like huh, like I can do that, and he
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: just had It's a timing thing, you know, it's a
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: timing thing, it's an opportunity thing. It was just really
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: good at it. So yeah, he was a stud at
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: Peanut was awesome. Held you talk about a teammate, Oh
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: my gosh, great teammate.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Peanut Tillman, Oh my gosh, I love that guy.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: You guys had some fucking dogs that Super Bowl year,
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: so it was cool. I mean you you also Jared
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: Allen too, just like him. Yeah, we had Jared Awn
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: and Peanut that in at twenty fifth teen and then
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: Roman Verse so I came in. I remember the first
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: time I met Pep.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I was like, oh my gosh, he is a monster.
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: He's big, but he's very he's proportional. So like when
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: you see him from a distance, you're like, oh, he's
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: big because he's so proportional, and then closer you get
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: to him, you're like Oh yeah, he's pretty stout.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I was so happy when we played, y'all, and he
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: was I think he went back right, he played and
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: then he went to the Packers.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: Played us at fifteen, he was in he was in
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: Green Bay. So he went Carolina, Chicago and then Green
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: Bay and then at the end he came back to us.
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: Because when he that was like his last year, right,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: his last two years drinking, the last two years. So
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: when we played, I mean, he put his hand in
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: the dirt. I'm looking at my form and his forum.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I'm like, this is not something we're not playing the
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: same game, are just equal. But he was in that.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: He was in that mode of I'm gonna pick and
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: choose my shots to kind of win, to really go hard.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: But he was like playing the game and it was love.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Just I was so happy.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: I'm just so talented man.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Him and guys like Sougs too, like just kind of
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: like understood the game at a level where they knew
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: when it was time to turn it on and not
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: when they got that older age. Was just so cool
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: to see.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: So then another guy that was a freak athlete, Shack Thompson. Shack,
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: so you're mentioning all those vets and yeah, Shaq Thompson
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: had the ability to he had a lot of range.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. So it was interesting. They bring Shack
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: in and he played running back, linebacker, safety at Washington
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: and we bring him in and Thomas was playing well,
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: I was playing Mike, so like there's not a ton
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: of room. But we're like, we need to get this
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: guy on the field because he's so talented. He does
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: everything well and he was super smart from the day
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: he got there, Like you tell him at one time,
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: he got it. And there's guys that can like memorize,
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: and there's guys that just have great feel for the
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: game of football and how to play in competitive and effort.
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: Shack showed up in the day that he got there.
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: He had all that, and so we need to find
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: a way to get him on the field. So we
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: would play him at nickel right and we called it
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: Buffalo and it was just like a it was just
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: a package we had. It was like a big nickel
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: so we could play all of our nickel calls but
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: have a bigger body in there so we could like
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: blitz him. We could play five down with him on
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage. We could play zone coverage, so
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: then there was really no matchup issues. But we were
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: able to get him on the field and highlight what
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: he was able to do, and it was just awesome. Yeah,
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: he's a great and he's a great. He took so
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: much pride in being the young because our room was good.
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: So it was like Thomas aj Klein was a.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Really good player because he was a fourth rounder.
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: That yeah he was Iowa state kid.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: Was he twenty thirteen thirteen years Yeah? Yeah, he was
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: my year because he sat behind you. But anytime, like
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: you would be down and he'd come in, he'd light
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: it up, like you got to go on and take
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: a contract to get bigger money. Yeah with New Orleans, right, yeah,
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: with New Orleans.
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: So Aj would play, Shaq would play. But our room
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: was like establish older guys, and he came in and
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: it was like his mission, like I'm not going to
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: let any of you guys down. So like that's how
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: he prepared, that's how he practiced. He played special teams,
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: never complained ever, just a good guy that like got it.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: So he's got a great career.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: You guys did have just a hell of a room. Yeah,
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: I'm sure, like Aj. You know, you just got to
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: be itching to get on the field at times, like
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: playing behind somebody like yourself, or just knowing you're not
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: going to be seeing the field unless an injury or
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: something like that happens. Because Aj was a stud at
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: Iowa State. And again, anytime he came in during a
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: stint that you'd be out like he'd light it up.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: Like he was a hell of a middle linebacker. Yeah,
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: I'll tell you what. You give those guys a lot
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: of credit to because he was like the the first
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: guy in wherever. So if his needed to be Will,
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: he could play Will. If he needed to play Mike,
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: he could play Mike. If you were playing you know,
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: three backers in like a base, look, he could play Sam.
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: And you know, you don't get reps at practice, right
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: like you don't get any So he had to show
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: up in locking in meetings and go to practice and
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: you know, do his thing there and then rundown on
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: teams and then oh hey somebody, hey, Luke's out, Like,
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: go play Mike backer, all right, the one that next
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: week TD's out, Lukes backing, all right, Now you gotta
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: go play Will backer. And it's like it never he
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: never lost a step or like had a mental blip.
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: He's just it's impressive, like those guys that are able
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: to do that at a high level.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, what was so fascinating to me is watching
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: your career and like when when you started like four
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: or five, six are to sustain a couple of injuries,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: your ability to kind of take your head out of
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: it but still be so productive. How did how is
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: that like transition for you? Because it seemed, at least
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: from me on film, obviously, Okay, this guy's not putting
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: his face in as much, but he's still finding ways
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: to manipulate blocks and be just as productive.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: Which you kind of nailed it. Like you the older
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: you get, like you physically you slow down, right, but
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: it's like like physically you slow down, but like mentally
- 1:22:50Speaker 3: you you learn more.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you've passed your physical ability with mental ability.
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: Yes, So then you're like, I don't need to I
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: don't need to go smash that guy, Like I know
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: where his point of attack angles, I know where mine is.
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: Can I speed him up? Can I slow him down?
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: Can I get him playing at my speed? Like my
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: advantages are quicker and faster. I might be a little bit.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: I might have a little bit more like quick pop
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: than he does. If I get in a dog fight
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: with him, he's bigger, stronger, he's more powerful. I'm gonna
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: lose like nine out of ten times. So it's like,
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: how can I manipulate a block in the sense of
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: like if I need to get there, and I can
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: get you to slow your feet down or stop your
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: feet Now, I can speed up faster than you. I
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: can slow down faster you. I can speed up faster
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: than you. So instead of like trying to run through
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: your chest, if I can get you to stop your feed, doom,
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: but when I can just get past you that way,
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: So it's like how can I You don't you don't
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: want to hit a million guys in the game. It
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: just wears you down.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: So it's like there's an ego element to it, like
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: Mike Linebacker being a thumper, like you could hit Like
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: was there a report where like I don't want to
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: give up this part of me, but I know it's
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: the best from my longevity.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: Yeah, you just like you gotta you love the game
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: of football, like you better figure out how to play
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: it as long as you can. And that's just kind
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: of part of the like it's kind of part of
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: the game, you know.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: Talk to us about how when you were first starting
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: to sustain the concussions. Like if I'm a teammate of
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: yours and you get ding the first time, Oh, Luke,
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: he's got a concussion.
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: Second time, Luke's got a concussion.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: Third time, when a pattern starts creeping up and then
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: you're coming into the cafeteria or something and it's like, hey,
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: what are you learning? Like, talk about that time as
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: a pattern starts to show itself with your head injuries.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Because there's always a point of feeling like vulnerable, like
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: almost like mortal.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: And two, like when you're getting stuff like concussions, you
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: know there's a part anytime you have an injury and
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: you're coming in the room, you're you feel like you've
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: let everybody down. Or like if you have an ankle
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: right or a high ankle sprain, and guys might be like,
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: you know, they're not questioning can you go, but in
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: your mind you're insecure enough to where you're like, I
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: hope these guys know that I am facing something pretty
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: bad right now. I'm just not able to be on
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: the field. But yeah, talk about your the head injuries.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: I think a lot of it is what you learn
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: and you know, like you said, you're twenty five years old,
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: you're like, I'm fine. I think a lot of it
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: is with the concussion stuff. If it's like you need
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: to be as honest with you can't with as you
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: can with yourself and with everyone taking care of you,
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: because if they don't know how you feel, they can't
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: help you. So like the more honest you are with them,
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: the better and the quicker you can come back from
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: whatever you have going on concussion wise. And that's what
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: I learned, you know, probably the hard way is like
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: our doctors are phenomenal. They took great care of me.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: They did everything they needed to do, and I just
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: wish I would have learned from an earlier age to
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: be more honest with them, because you got to get
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: all the way back before you can go play again. Right, Yeah,
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: Like there's no like, say you have like a wrist
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: that's bugging, you can like tape it.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: And like like okay, it's kind of like a badge
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: of honor when you're.
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: Like you like figure it out, like or you do
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: something to your finger, like all right, but like you
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: don't really you'll be fine, yeah, versus your head, it's
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: like you can't really tough it out. And the more
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: you try to tough it out, the worse it gets.
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: And then you start to realize, like, why do I like,
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: like you said, you want to play and like you
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: want to bring value to your team, right, And then
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: you start to realize, like, all right, if I'm not
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: honest and I go back out before I should and
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: I get dinged again, I'm providing less value to my
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: team because now I'm gonna be out for longer. So
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: it's like, all right, maybe it takes me, you know,
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: two weeks to come back. I'd rather be honest and
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: take those full two weeks and come back. Then after
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: we'd be like I'm good and like and you're not,
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: and then you get dinged again. Now it's five weeks,
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: so instead of it being a two week injury, it's
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: a six week injury. And it's all because you didn't
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: take care of yourself. Like that's really I think what
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: I learned, you know, probably not as quickly as I
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: should have, But what I learned was the more honest
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: you are with yourself, and the more honest you are
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: with the guys that are their job is to take
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: care of you, then the better it is for you,
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: for them, for the team, for your you know, I
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: just want to play football. The faster I can get
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: back to playing football. So it's like everything gets better
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: the more honest you are.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: Now when you had the first one, like how many
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: do you would? Do you think that you had before
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: that first one?
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: I don't think I had zero zero, like for sure
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: like one hundred percent, because you always wonder like, well,
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: I know if I get one. And then the first
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: one I got was in twenty fifteen, and I was like, yeah,
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: that's that's one.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: Yeah, So and did that one you come back earlier from,
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: like when you're saying I learned it sooner if you did.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: If you feel like you didn't have any before that
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: first one, was there some of those early ones that
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: you're like trying to in your brain tough enough?
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: So that one was the first one, and I was like,
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: I was like I need to like get my I
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: need to get better. And it worked out literally perfectly.
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: So that was week one and then I think we played, Yeah,
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: we played three games and we had to buy so
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: you know, you got to two weeks into it, and
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: our trainers like, dude, he's like, you need to relax
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: first of all, because you're putting all this stress on yourself.
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: So what's just you're not gonna play next week? How
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: about that? And I wasn't. I wasn't gonna be back anyways.
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: But he, like him a lot of credit Ryan form million,
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: He took all the the pressure off me and was like,
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: we're just you're not gonna play next week and then
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: the following weeks of bye week, so like you have
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: two weeks so just like kind of relax and that happened,
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: and I was like like like okay. So then I
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: remember I went home for the bye week, and I
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: knew how to aggravate it, like I knew how to
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: give myself. A lot of it was uh oh, exercise base,
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: like heart rate base, like if I got my heart
- 1:28:29Speaker 3: rate up, then I'll start getting like headaches. And I
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: was like, all right, I feel really good. It was
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: like Thursday of the bye week, Thursday or Friday, I
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: was back in Cincinnati and I wrote up like a
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: really hard workout and I was like all right, this
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: is like it like either I'm gonna be good or
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: I'm not gonna be good and there's like no one
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: between either. I'ma feel like crap, I'm gonna feel really good. Yeah,
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: and I hit that working and I was like, all right,
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: I'm good. And then and then I had a full
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: another week of practice, So essentially you had like five weeks.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: You know, you're not hitting anybody in practice.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: Right, especially at that point. Yeah, so usually that third
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: week of then Mark.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that was probably the best I could have handled it.
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: And then moving forward, you just have a couple when
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: you want to play, and so maybe you don't like
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: you just I didn't handle it as probably well as
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: I could have, and like it just it was it
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: was unfortunate. But like now it's like you go talk
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: to guys, you're like, dude, if you get one, like
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: you have to be smart and you got to be
- 1:29:24Speaker 3: honest with yourself.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's such a difficult game you're talking about though,
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: because you have the hindsight of like looking back, like
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: when these guys like Will and I talk about all
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: the time, like when you're in it, there's like these
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: blinders that are on your eyes and you're solely focused
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: on this thing and this is the main storyline of
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: your life. But everything else, like the next forty years
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: of your life, you're not even concerned about it.
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and you're also like the only thing I
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: want to do is play football, right, Like that's it,
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: Like I just want to play football. I want to
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: be on the field with the guys, like I love
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: playing football on Sundays. And then this prevents you from
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: doing it. So you're like, I just won't play football,
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: Like I just won't play. I just won't play. I
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: just won't play, And that cloud your judgment more than
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: like really anything else. Is like I just miss wake
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: up on Sunday during football season and like just like
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: watching from your my house. Yeah, Like we played Tampa
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: then twenty fifteen, and I remember sitting in my apartment,
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: like the team went down there and I was just
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: watching it at my house. Like this freaking sucks.
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: There's no there's no lonelier feeling than when a team
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: you're injured and the team goes on an away game,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: when you watch the buses leave and you're like you
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: you feel so ico everybody.
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: In your life. Yeah, it's but then it's like it's
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: good perspective. It's like, what do you take from it,
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: and it's like all right, well, when other guys are
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: missing games, like you gotta have like like you got
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: to check on those guys, like, dude, how you doing right,
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: because you know what's eating them up? Yeah, it's like, dude,
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: I hate to feel you man, like just get better.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they get better. So how many did you end
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: up getting throughout your career don't?
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: I don't know? I mean I miss some time and
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: obviously fifteen sixteen, I missed a game in seventeen and
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: then like nothing that was like really nothing like big
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: after that.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: When was retirement starting to come into the fold.
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: End of that twenty nineteen season, because you just like
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: clip a guy and you're like, dang, like like I
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: don't It wasn't like you know, you should just go
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: smack dudes, yeah and have no issues. I would go
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: hit a guy. I'm like, I didn't really feel great.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: And so then once you make the decision in your mind,
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: like you know, I'm not all the way in it once,
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: like mentally, were.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: You starting to think about it a lot into that
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: nineteen Yeah.
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: Like the like the last like the last game of
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: the year, I was like, I'm done. I'm done.
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: So that's when you made your decisions that last year.
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: After so it was week it's week sixteen, so obviously
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: week seventeen's last week. Week sixteen. I remember being like, yeah,
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: probably done.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: So really was there a process of like talking to
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: anybody or was feeling I.
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Just remember after that game, like I was like, yeah,
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: you don't. You don't got it anymore, like you just
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: you don't. You don't like you don't have it.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: What's your you don't have it? Because I'm right now.
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: Yeah, like you know, you can't play. I would have
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: been fine if like I physically slowed down, like can't
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: run as well, like not as fast, maybe I'm not
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: as physical, maybe like I don't have the same like fire.
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: I would have been fine with that, and I would
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: have like kind of just probably milked it out a
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: little bit more like yeah, I love playing. But once
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: I knew it was my head and I'm like like mentally,
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: I'm like, dude, it's either yes or no, Like if
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: you slow down, you can like physically you can still
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: play football hard and like play fast and play with
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: great effort. But once I knew in my head mentally,
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: like it's not any of that it's like your head
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: stuff now, you can't you can't in your brain. In
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: my brain, I couldn't rationalize, like I can't play as
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: hard as I want to. My effort's not going to
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: be there. I can't be as physic cool. And once
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: I knew that, I'm like, man, it's not fair to
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: the guys in the team, and it's not fair to
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: the coaches, and it's not fair to like the fans
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: and myself and my family for me to go out
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: there at like mentally seventy five percent. Like if I
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: got to thump a guard and push a guy back
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: to Chack to make a play and I'm like yeah,
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: and like I get widened and then and then the
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: shot the tackles really hard on Shack, Like that's not
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: fair to Shack for me to like, no, especially mentally,
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: I know the reason why I'm not stuffing that guy.
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: Once I knew that, I was like okay versus like
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: I'm you know, Sam still playing right now and I'm
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: thirty three years old and I go to stuff a
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: guard and like that dude's twenty five years old and
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: he just mauls me. Like I'm like, I mean, I
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: did everything right I tried hard. I prepared in the
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: off season, like I gave it everything I had. That
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: guy's just a young dude and you just beat me
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: versus like in my head, I'm like I didn't take
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: him on is like I didn't hit him how I
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: should have? Like I'm not with that, Like I couldn't.
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: I couldn't do that. Yeah, it's knowing that your effort
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: wasn't my effort wasn't there, and like that's not fair
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: to like the guys in the team. So I was like,
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: all right in.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: Yourself too, like you have to stand in your head
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: of how you play the game and how you want
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: to play the game, and you know, like not that
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: you're half assing, but if you're thinking about that trying
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: to smash a guard and you're like, I didn't do
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: this because of X, Y and Z, in my mind.
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: It's just not fair to any Yeah.
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know. So I love that you're sweating
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: on the bus with the.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: Yeah this is like this outside. Yeah, well we've had
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: it as we actually started a gravel parking lot.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: Yeah, in the middle of May.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, it's it's it's so impressive to me because
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: like when I talk to you. When I listen to
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: you talk like this motherfucker loves ball, you could just
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: tell he's not just about himself.
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: He's about the team.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: He's about everybody, everybody else's job. And I can I
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: can feel that from you. And then you sit there
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: and say week sixteen, I knew I was done and
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: that was it. Yeah, it's what was that transition like
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: for you? Because now you're going from a guy that
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: I have no doubt was one hundred percent in on
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: football his entire life. Oh yeah, to now your.
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: White glove service bus brand.
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you're you're one hundred percent in. And now you're
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: waking up in the fall. Yeah, and it's like, Okay,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: you wake up in August and I know your feeling.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: We've done it for a few years now. It's like
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: you wake up in August and you're like it's fucking great.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: Like there's a policeivie that's like all right, Like I
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: know all them boys fifteen minutes out of room of
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: my house are dying right now, and I just woke
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: over my kids, you know, have a little breakfast with them.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: There's so many positives, But then there's no Sundays where
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: you sit there and it's like two thirty and the
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: noonslate's ending and you see your team catching a big
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: win and it's like, fuck, I missed with that locker
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: room is gonna feel like when they go back in there.
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: Yeah. So my first year out, I worked with the
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: team in the scouting department, so that was cool. And
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: then on game days I was in the booth with
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: the offense and I was the personnel guy, so like
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: the they'd come out and I'd be in charge of
- 1:35:59Speaker 3: like are they nick or they and base? What kind
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: of base are they in? All that kind of stuff.
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: So that was hell, Yeah, we get we did upgrade
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: and we're going from paper towels to pre towels. It's great.
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: I felt like a little air coming into.
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about your concussions.
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I sweat my ass off. So it was cool.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: I got to be at the games on Sundays, and
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: the first year was the first year was like damn man,
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: like I still think I can play, and so that
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: part was hard. And then the further way you get
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: from it, you're like like I do the radio with
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: the team. Now I do the radio broadcast and I
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: go on the field before the game, and you see
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: these guys run by you and you're like, I'm good,
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: all set, I'm good man, appreciate you. Like Tristan works,
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: he comes running by and you're like, I'm all good.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: There was a video two days ago on Instagram of
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: him squatting five plates for like three or four reps
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: with ease.
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: He's like the nicest guy in the world.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a great human. Iowa cat Like, he's just
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: a great dude. He just he is the athletic ability
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: of a linebacker. Yeah, squad seven hundred pounds whan We were.
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: Fieling that a couple of years ago when we were
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: at the that Arizona BWLE And you're just seeing the
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: guys kind of warm up in practice and pop the
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: pads a little bit beforehand, and you're just sitting there
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: thinking like.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: What the fuck it comes? Like, Yo, what psychopath would
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: do this?
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: Yeah, because once you get out of it, like you
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: get soft quick.
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: You want to be the guy that's like on the team,
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: but they put you on season ending I ar, so
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: you're like you get to show up like you kind
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: of have a job, but like you don't have to play.
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: You can still travel your stress. The stress you like
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: walk out to practice, you drink some coffee. But you're
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: on the team, so like your way of life is
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: like socially acceptable versus like if you get done, you're
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: like I can't just like go hang out in the
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: locker room and like lift, Like you can't do that.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Like here comes this pro scout Louke.
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: Yeah you just want Yeah, you're like the arter places, right,
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: you got to go bring a guy upstairs and get cut,
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: Like yeah, that year, did you ever have to do that?
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: Brought one guy up? Yeah?
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: Talk about the year being in the pro scouting I'll tell.
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: You what you learn a lot about the NFL, like
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: what plays, types of guys in the NFL. Like you
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: learn a ton and it was super cool. Like I
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: learned a lot and it was super beneficial, but it
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: wasn't something I wanted to do long term. But like
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: you really get to see like what play, like the
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: difference between personnel and a three four versus personnel and
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: a four to three, Like body types like length, what
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: guys are looking for, what plays, what doesn't play? Types
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: of running backs, Like you don't have a feel for
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: that while you're playing, because all you do is studying
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: an opponent. You're not studying like you know, height, weight, speed, size,
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: how they play, what kind of football player they are,
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: And you learn like the whole league by doing that.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: Because we did, we had to watch all the free
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: agents for that season going into the next year. So
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: then like now moving forward, like you watch a guy
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: and you're like, like, we watched that guy for twenty
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: five minutes and graded him and wrote a report on him,
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: and like it's it was really cool.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: So was it like cutting?
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: I just remember going up there is his name, probably
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: was a linebacker.
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: I remember it was a corner, and I remember just
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: walking up there, and I remember I walked into the
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: GM's office and I'm like, hey, look like I'm down
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: to do a lot of things, Like I kind of
- 1:39:15Speaker 3: don't want to do that. Like after after the fact that, yeah,
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: I was like, guys, like I'd rather just like not
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: do that. I feel bad. I'm like, I know how
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: hard it is to play and like and make the
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: roster and feel like you're on the roster and then
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: get cut, Like you see all your buddies do that
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: throughout your whole career, and you're like, man, like I'd
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: rather not be that guy that has to do that
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: and they're like they're like, yeah, sorry, we don't have
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: to do that anymore. Like cool, Like damn, you know you.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: Got pulling the gym apologize to.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: Luke's a grim Reaper?
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah that guy. You don't want to be that
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: guy because you know, you're you're standing at the door
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: waiting for them to come in from practice and everyone's.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: Like Luke, what's up.
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: Man? You're like, hey, can I talk to you?
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: And they're like dang yeah and one year removed, Yeah,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: like eighty percent of that roster knows you as a teammate.
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: So I got up. I got up there and they're
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: like we're sorry, Like it's cool, I just rather not
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: do that again. Yeah.
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: Was this a guy that was on the team the
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: year before, we know.
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: But he was a dude. That's like he was like
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: a dude, like a dude in the league for a while.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: Oh so and when he when he says something to him,
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: was there any like common like, man, you're the grim Reaper?
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: No?
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: I think he I think he probably knew it was coming,
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: but it doesn't make it any easier.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's he was a vet. He understood the game.
- 1:40:25Speaker 3: He's been in the league for a long time and
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: like it was a dude.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: So I think he's probably like Luke's trying to study
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: on how to cut guys. He's just throwing on moneyball.
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: I mean, did that's at any point during that season
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: of you being a scout or doing whatever you were doing.
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: Did they have a reproaching and be like, hey, could
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: you play a couple more games for us?
- 1:40:46Speaker 3: They always joked about it, but I was like, guys, like,
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: you know how quickly you tighten up like qua.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: Low back.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: You know those videos the guy's like running and looks
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: like they get shot. Yeah, that would have been me,
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: Like first time they run, you know, a seam ball,
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: I got chase the guy in the middle of field.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know the first game, the first game
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: that Michael Linebacker didn't have a great one and someone
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: made a joke to you, if you would have been like, yeah,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: I'd give it another Like are you for real?
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: My injury waiver would have been like this long?
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: Yeah, huge, I mean that paycheck though it.
- 1:41:23Speaker 3: Would have been a league minimum.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: No no, no, no, no, you pull that hamstring, I
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: are the rest of the season. Yeah, that would have
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: been nice, bro.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: Thanks, he's on the team still that guy there?
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that is that would suck.
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: To be Now, did you were you in a point
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: too mentally to where you're you're juggling or trying to
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: figure out what you're wanting to do long term, like
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: how's everything checking him? Now? You mentioned your youth football
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: coach with with Greg goals and shout out the boy
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: Greg you do radio stuff. Was there a moment to
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: where you're like, man, I kind of don't I have
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: no clue what I want to do, and I'm kind
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: of chasing some.
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: I think you Yeah, I think there's you don't know
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: what you want to do. Obviously, like you get done
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: and like like perfect world, I would I would have
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: loved to have kept playing, So like I probably happened
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: earlier than I wanted it to. And so then the
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: process becomes like you have to just continually try stuff
- 1:42:14Speaker 3: until you find stuff that you like, and then once
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: you like it, then just keep doing it. And then
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: if you don't like it, then you stop doing it.
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: But like you have to, there needs to be a
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: concerted effort too. If you're gonna go do something like
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: you gotta go all the way in because if you
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: tiptoe around it, you're not gonna get the full experience.
- 1:42:33Speaker 3: You're gonna waste your time. More importantly, you're you're using
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: somebody else's time too, Like if somebody's gonna help you
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: try to dive into something and you and you don't
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: go all the way and you're wasting their time. So
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: it's like, all right, I'm gonna go all the way
- 1:42:45Speaker 3: in on a couple of things. I'm gonna try certain
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: things out. I tried scouting, just wasn't my thing. It
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: was fun, it's just like I'm not doing this long term.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: And then the hours are crazy too. Yeah, just busy.
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: Then the next year I did the radio with the
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: Panthers radio broadcast, Like that's awesome, Like I really like that.
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: So that's pretty much the whole season, and then the
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: youth football stuff with Greg So. His son Tate's in
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: that picture and that's his dad Chris. His dad Chris
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: coached high school football in Jersey and just look him up.
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: They didn't lose a game for like five years in
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: a row.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: Him.
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: Look him up. Just look him up. So we've been
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: doing that for this will be our fourth year. So
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: it's been awesome, Like we have a ton of fun
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: with it. We coach at a a school in Charlotte.
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: Charlotte Christian is the school. Check us out, okay, And
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: this is our first year coaching at Charlotte Cristian was
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: last year because Tate, Greg's oldest was in seventh grade,
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: so we did coach Pop Warner for two years and
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: then Tate got in the seventh grade. So then we
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: coached at the grade school which is attached to the
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: high school, and then we'll coach again at the high
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: school this year.
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: So what happens to the current staff, that's.
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: Like, you know, so they kind of bounce back kind.
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: Of like hey, Greg Als and Luke Keickley, they're coming in.
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: So it's awesome. So it's really we got a new staff. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: The two guys that like make it run it are
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: Greg and his dad, Like they're phenomenal, and then the
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: other we got two or two or three other guys.
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: Three other guys, so it's Stu. Jonathan Stewart coaches the
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: running backs, which has been phenomenal, just a crazy and
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: then Todd Blacklicche so Todd Blackler's quarterback at Penn State
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: National Championship one was a first round pick. Now does NBC.
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: I think it's NBC College with Noah Eagle, Iron Eagle son,
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: so that he does. He does college football on Saturday, big, big,
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: big game. So he did All have State Oregon last year.
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: He's like, he's a little bit and he lives in
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: and he lives in Charlotte. So it's so much fun
- 1:44:40Speaker 3: because I mean, Greg and Stu are like some of
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: my best buds when we were playing, so I get
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: to hang out with them. Greg's dad's awesome, Todd's great,
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: and we just have a ton of fun with it.
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: Would you ever want to call games like Greg does?
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: Does rap right? The I think so the radio. The
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: interesting thing about radio and TV, so radio you really
- 1:44:59Speaker 3: just talk about like what's happening in the game and
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: like why it's happening. What I think is cool about
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: TV is like Greg does a phenomenal job of like
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: setting games up, and like what I mean by setting
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: it up is like talking about what he anticipates going
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: to happen in the game, why it's gonna happen, what
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: you know, say, it'd be like if say Tristan Wurfs
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: has missed the last couple weeks and he's back in
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: the lineup. Greg will talk about, you know, Tristan Worf's
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: is back in the lineup, this is how it affects
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: him in the run game, in the past game. This
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: is where Tristan Worf's is really good in the run game.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: So maybe they're gonna bubble up. Like Greg does it
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: way better than that. But you can really lay out
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: a game doing TV because you don't have to explain
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: what's happening every play because the viewer can watch the
- 1:45:42Speaker 3: game and Greg is able to set it up early
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: in the game and then really talk through situational stuff
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: and get into, you know, really why things are happening
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: and why why it worked, why it didn't. He does
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: a great job with that, and I think that part
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: would be really cool. But I just have a ton
- 1:45:59Speaker 3: of fun with the radio stuff, and like I told
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: you guys, like I just try to do things that
- 1:46:04Speaker 3: I enjoy, and I enjoy the radio. I think the
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: TV would be really would be really fun as well.
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: So I just kind of see what happens.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: You ever you got out to uh Buffalo, Yeah for
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: some uh for some coaching. Do you ever see yourself
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: coaching in the league one day, or trying to coach
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: at a high level.
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: Like I think it'd be a ton of fun. It's
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: just those hours, Like.
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: Bro, they're nuts. It's it's it's like take what players
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: do when they're studying all week long and yeah coaches, man,
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: it's it's like around the clock.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: It's just all the time. And like, I'm just not
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: ready to give up that much time. So I mean
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: answer probably not.
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, the hours are crazy. I don't I mean
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: you the boy might. There's like an itch, there's an
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: itch in there.
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: It's somewhere.
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: I don't know if it'll ever bet A lot about
- 1:46:47Speaker 3: doing is doing it during OTAs. Yeah, So get out
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: there and OTAs and like and be like, hey, these
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: next six weeks, like I'm in, like every day, I'm
- 1:46:56Speaker 3: in whenever you guys are, and just do it and
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: then you'll know by the end of that of like
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: yes or no.
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: But OTAs is such a different vibe than camp and season.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: Ots is so light. The coaches are feel good. Everyone's
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: kind of joking around. The minute you walk into the
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: building July twenty fifth or whenever that you know, everyone
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: goes into camp. Buttles are tight.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: Yeah, not only that, but if you get behind the
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: A ball in the season, Yeah, yeah, you start off
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: you know two and.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Two, one in three people just pissed off. You're trying
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: to navigate bad attitudes everywhere. It's difficult. That's like one
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: thing you don't miss is like the bipolar nests of
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: coaches and teammates.
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: And it's like you miss like that, like not stressed,
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: but like that pressure of like we gotta go, like we.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Gotta yeah, it's a big one right here.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: Like we got to go make this like this is
- 1:47:41Speaker 3: a big game. This is for a lot of reasons,
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: Like you miss that, like the urgency, that urgency, the pressure.
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: Those week like Week fourteen on when your team's like
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: on the bubble, like are we going to make the playoffs?
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: Are we not?
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: What do we control in our destiny? What teams have
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: to lose? And it's like you're kind of with your
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: little whether it's a linebacker group or meet with the
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: offensive Linement's like we got to do X, Y and
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Z to make a wild card can happen for us.
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: That's why you play the Band of Brothers in December,
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: like you want to be you want to you want
- 1:48:08Speaker 3: your season. The matter in December, Yeah, you know what
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: I mean. You obviously want it to matter in like September, October, November,
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: but like if it comes December and you're like, hey,
- 1:48:16Speaker 3: like you're in the un we're.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: In the mix, and then anything can happen.
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: In January, it didn't even matter, Like you're in the mix.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: Like you're in the mix, that's all that matters. And
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: now you got to just go play your best ball.
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: It's that's the best.
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: Part of that is the worst feeling in the world
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: is December and nothing matters, and you're like, you hear
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: the older guys in my first two years, we won
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: five games my first two years, and I'm hearing older
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: guys talk about Cabo and all these things are going
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: to go on, and you're just still so involved, like
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: you think every game still matters. What's going on here, guys? Feeling? Yeah,
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: way exactly.
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: Play for the name on your back now, Yeah, anything.
- 1:48:51Speaker 3: To find out somewhere. Yeah, you.
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: Get those coaches the way you know, might they might
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: be on the outs where they just start giving the
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: play for the name on your back, whatever you play
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: for whether and you just know, way, we're all in
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: December and we're anybody. Yeah, well it's the name on
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: your front, your family at home, maybe the cash of
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: the bake account, name on your back.
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: Let that heart turn black when you walk out there.
- 1:49:18Speaker 3: Oh man, you gotta find it though.
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, this has been awesome.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it has. I was just gonna ask if you
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: have any hobbies outside of football.
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: I love so. I love the bow hunt. Really, that's
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: my favorite thing. I get a little josh.
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: You guys are out there get real hunter with na Yeah, dude,
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: he's a real man too. They'd have you out there,
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: and you know.
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: I love That's that's another reason I want to coach.
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: I love to bow hunt, Yeah, white tail, elk, anything
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: with the bow that's like my jam you.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: I'm assuming you go out there to Montana, So yeah,
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: I love.
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: To hunt elk in Montana. And then New Mexico is
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: a really good state too.
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: I'm just saying, since we're on the airways right now,
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: Garrett cal Rinella, whoever's listening for Meat Eater.
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: Yeah, get your get your. They got a great concept
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: there is. I hope he has had fun.
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: There's so much fun.
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: Yeah, because but it was a last yeah.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's part of but you pulled the trigger
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: I did. A lot of guys would stiffen up and
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: I even pull that trip. So you did something that
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: at the moment up I know. And it's fun too
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: because Will and I we don't. I look in your
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: eyes and you talk about bow hunting and I just don't.
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: I don't have that.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: But to go out with them and then like work
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: us through like long range rifle streaming. I went and
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: sat down and I went one for five on my
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: first five shots, and I was like, this is going
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: to be the longest couple of days of my life.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: But then Garrett starts sitting there working with me, and
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: he's like try this is and this He's lining me up.
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: They're great coaches. They don't make you feel stupid even
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: though they're like such bigger, better men than you are.
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: It's just awesome, man.
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: It's like those these animals live in beautiful areas. Yeah,
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: you go hunt elk, You're gonna be somewhere sweet. Yeah,
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: the mountains. The weather's beautiful, it's in the fall, and
- 1:50:54Speaker 3: it's just that's like my favorite time of year. And
- 1:50:56Speaker 3: they go do that stuff. It's just sweet.
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: What's been your longest like l hunt to where you're
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: you're tracking it down. We did so climbing mountains.
- 1:51:03Speaker 3: No, I usually we hunt out of like an outfitter,
- 1:51:06Speaker 3: and it's usually I haven't done like the full like
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: nine miles ten miles in on a horse and then
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: you set up spike camp. I haven't done that. I
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: like that. I'm gonna wake up. I'm gonna wake up
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: early in the morning. I'm gonna be out all day
- 1:51:18Speaker 3: and then yeah, and I'm gonna probably come home. Yes.
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: Is there we do we have that?
- 1:51:26Speaker 4: You don't have to read that, you can just read them.
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: Okay, perfect. We do have a bud light question for you.
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: Okay, people would do.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: Anything for a bud light. What would you do anything for? Oh?
- 1:51:37Speaker 3: My probably my parents. I think my parents. Yeah.
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: I mean that's about wholesome.
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: Like you think about your parents and like what your
- 1:51:44Speaker 3: parents have done for you everything from growing up to
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: high school to college. At all my games in college,
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: it came to down to Carolina, it's like your parents.
- 1:51:52Speaker 3: My parents were fantastic. They set you up for everything.
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: Everything was about my brothers and I and so, yeah,
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: you do anything for they do anything for you. You
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: do anything for them. I love the short answers.
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: Yes, that's a good heart, awesome, beautiful my parents.
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: How many brothers you have? I got two brothers. So
- 1:52:10Speaker 3: there's a picture older brothers on the right. That's John,
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: he lives in Cincinnati. There's my dad, my mom, and
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: then my younger brother Henry. Were they some dogs?
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: John played football on lacrosse through high school and then
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: Henry was a basketball player. Okay, so yeah, I love that.
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: Yeah do you?
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: I'm sure you have who's that that profile that has
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: the Luke Keithley video where he's going, where he's going.
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: Who's next?
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: That somebody said me, that is awesome. That that guy
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: Who's next?
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: Danny or something like that. He's all time.
- 1:52:45Speaker 3: That guy's hilarious. Yeah he is.
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: Paul. Anything that we've missed, we do have Paul Swans
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: sending the back with the boys right now, grinding it out.
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: Paul was very pivotal in getting the boys in a
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: Creatine and an Intangibles group chat with Luke myself.
- 1:52:59Speaker 4: We got creating on the bus right now. Can we
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: can we take have some of my suitcase? We can
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: take them later on when we get done here.
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: Just put some.
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's some going boys not the real creat team. Yeah,
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: anything that I've missed with Luke, I mean, this is

- 1:53:18Speaker 4: answer right there, I mean that's just that's gold the parents.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:53:24Speaker 4: I actually just got done hearing him talk about most
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: of this when we were talking to coach Lee over
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: at Vanderbilt.
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: So he's been talking about it a lot to just
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: diving in. Yeah, he's breaking down all the players too,
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: how to watch film, how to break down film.
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: I'll tell you what that the diego Pavia. He's got
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: it like it.
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: He's a savage.
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: What do you love about him? He's like he walks
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: into a room and he's the dude without trying to
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: be the dude. And he can talk to everybody. He
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: can talk to the offensive coaches, defensive coaches. He understands,
- 1:53:58Speaker 3: he's got football. IQ is great, ultra competitive. He's just
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: he's that dude, like he's got it. You know what
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: I'm saying.
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: You can tell Luke's got his uh his pro scouting
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: background too, so he can talk about these.
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: Snap Yeah, if guys come talk to him, they'll be like,
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: we need to find a way to get this guy
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: around us.
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: Yeah, because he is.
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: He is electric.
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: He's a football dude, football guy.
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: He just loves ball.
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: He loves the game, He embraces it's that's all. He
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: knows all about football. And you know those guys, they're
- 1:54:30Speaker 3: hard to come by, you know, you still I was
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: gonna say to have it when he first came. Oh
- 1:54:35Speaker 3: my gosh, that dude was born with it. That he is.
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: Talk about a guy that loves football and all he
- 1:54:41Speaker 3: wants to do is just be a good teammate, play hard.

- 1:54:50Speaker 4: All the first ballot Hall of Fame.
- 1:54:52Speaker 3: You talk about a guy.
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: I have a tough photo for CMC though. I mean,
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: he's a built cat.
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: That is a ton a bad angle. But yeah, I'm
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: so excited for him this year. Come back, rip you.
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: Gonna be a daddy too, Yes, shout out him.
- 1:55:09Speaker 3: Have a great year.
- 1:55:10Speaker 4: So hey, i'd be I'd be remiss to say, you know,
- 1:55:14Speaker 4: listening to Luke his art, listening to his football knowledge,
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: but your ball knowledge is it's phenomenal.
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: I appreciate I got I do probe myself on some
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: i Q some good. You might not think I played
- 1:55:25Speaker 2: in the league a long time, but from that I
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: was the neck you nine years, nine years. I was
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: there for the tenth year.
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: But you know the lead get a credited season, No,
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: because I had.
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: A gambling show, so they wouldn't let me play.
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: Did you ever come across Will Compton film at linebacker,
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: never take anything from his game?
- 1:55:45Speaker 3: Yeah? Absolutely, Yeah, for toughness instincts, try hard, try hard,
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: collar guy.
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: Yeah, what's it's those plays you break down?
- 1:55:53Speaker 3: I don't like that's that's that's that shirt you have on.
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: But yeah, it's uh hearing you too talk about plays
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: happening that you don't necessarily make, like being mugged up
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: in the eight gaps. They got you in a bunch,
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: they're checking Tulsa, putting you in a toss situation, any
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: type of situational ball awareness. It's uh, it's music to
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: my ears.
- 1:56:13Speaker 3: Yeah right, we'll get you.
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: We'll get you that year ten.
- 1:56:15Speaker 4: If you want to come pit some race cars.

- 1:56:20Speaker 2: to be just you can.
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: Do I think you can do it.
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: Let me play.

- 1:56:25Speaker 2: I was down there to sign and rip there to sign,
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: and contract wouldn't go through because They're like, let's hold
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: up the NFL.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: Good shut it down?
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Goodell shut it down.
- 1:56:34Speaker 3: Dang when's good?
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: When's Goodell gonna come on the bus?
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: I don't know he's got an open invite. Does he
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: can apologize the will for Yeah?
- 1:56:45Speaker 4: Scrapping your ten?
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: You had a good You had a good number two
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: five to one.
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: It's a great white linebacker.
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: That's Sam Mill's number. That number wasn't available.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: You see that pick right there, Keller Moore seventeen coverage,
- 1:56:59Speaker 2: We'll coverage you in. You were in Tampa there and
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: we had somebody dropping low hole because we knew he
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: was going to try to work wit and over the middle.
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: Kellamore airmails it the bread basket.
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: But hey, you know what you had the hardest thing
- 1:57:09Speaker 3: about the interception is gotta catch it, buddy.
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: That was that was my first one. And when that
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: bowl was in the air, it's something I could make
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: the play on it. I was like, you better catch it.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: I kind of just put the hands out there too,
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: and was just so high.
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: Glo gloves, sticky gloves or those offensive line gloves. What's
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: up those gloves you're wearing right there? Those stickies?
- 1:57:33Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't. We don't wear offensive line gloves. You
- 1:57:36Speaker 3: never know.
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: I can never get on board with the Keekley risk
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: with the wrist braces though.
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: Risk cards were money.
- 1:57:43Speaker 4: Were you a risk taper? It's a little swag here, Yeah,
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: it's a little bit.
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: You brought out Jonathan Steward or earlier too. I did
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: put him on skates in our game. Why there's leg
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: game we're getting you put him on skates. Oh, I
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: murdered him coming through the A gap. Got yeah, and
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: I put him on skates, joked him out, put him
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: on skates, like, put him in the air, put his
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: late in the game. We're getting our backs blown out
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: by the Panthers. But your boy, we're still playing for
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: pride at the end of the day.
- 1:58:11Speaker 3: Out there.
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, the heart was black in that play.
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: Ran right through the B gap, right through the gap
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: and just murdered.
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: You gonna want to rematch After listening to this line up, I.
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: Don't got it anymore. But find that clip.
- 1:58:24Speaker 3: I will show you, guys.
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: I'm sure wet. But hey, look, this has been awesome.

- 1:59:27Speaker 2: the ball to off the ball, I feel like is
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: a is a heady transition for.
- 1:59:31Speaker 3: For Zach Bond. You know who I like? Nick Bolton, Yes, bro, he.
