Transcript
- 0:23Well, in the spirit of being myself, I'm going to start over.
- 0:30Maybe I'll even just keep this. OK, what am I talking about?
- 0:33Guys, seriously, I got to get my shit together here.
- 0:36I am talking about a very important thing today and it is
- 0:40called Being Yourself. Now as I mentioned, the majority
- 0:46of this podcast, once I get it off the ground here is going to
- 0:50be me talking to people and interviewing them and providing
- 0:56a space for people to tell their stories about how they have
- 0:59overcome adversity in any area of their life until those guests
- 1:04are booked and ready to go and recorded and ready to push play.
- 1:08I'm going to tell you some stories about myself that all
- 1:11involve overcoming adversity in one area of my life.
- 1:15So this will be a quick one, but I feel like going into the
- 1:20weekend I just kind of get a get a little reflective about who I
- 1:23am, what I've done that week, how I've been, what I've done
- 1:26well, what I've not done well. And I think I've done something
- 1:30really well this week that I used to have a really hard time
- 1:34with. So something that used to be
- 1:37sort of a real source of adversity for me has now
- 1:40literally become an adventure. See what I did there?
- 1:43Adventures. An adversity baby.
- 1:45That's what it's all about. So my friends that know me well,
- 1:51probably, well, they probably know this, but if they recently
- 1:56met me, they might not know that I didn't always used to be this
- 2:00sort of carefree and how I presented myself.
- 2:03I feel like for years I would, you know, with good intentions,
- 2:10try to make sure that everyone in the room liked me.
- 2:14I would kind of turn down my sense of humor if I thought the
- 2:19people in the room would think it was too much, or I'd turn it
- 2:22up if it was like a louder crowd, or I'd be a little
- 2:26quieter if it was quieter. And what I realized was is A
- 2:33that was kind of bullshit because it wasn't really me,
- 2:36even though I thought it was, and B, it was exhausting, like
- 2:42exhausting, like who can keep that up?
- 2:47Just, I don't know if I was doing it subconsciously or I
- 2:51would catch myself like just trying to be what people wanted
- 2:57me to be. And if and when I wanted to like
- 2:59crack a joke, if it was like too much, I'd hold back a little bit
- 3:02depending on the crowd. Or, I mean, I know you're
- 3:04supposed to do that, but I'm just being honest that I I
- 3:08really cared so much about what people thought, which prevented
- 3:12me from doing a lot of things like starting this podcast.
- 3:16It's like, oh, what if I suck? What if, you know, I'm annoying
- 3:19and people don't like my voice and only my friends like it?
- 3:21Well, who gives a shit? Because no matter what you do,
- 3:25you're going to be too loud or too quiet or too funny or too
- 3:30not funny or too boring or too exciting or too happy or too
- 3:35emotional or too unemotional for people.
- 3:37So why don't you just be yourself?
- 3:41That's what I've learned. I think going through hard times
- 3:44and like being stripped of my confidence and identity and just
- 3:50not knowing who I was anymore. Like a year ago, I just went
- 3:55through a crisis and it really when I came out of it, I learned
- 4:00a lot about who I am, who I don't want to be, who I know
- 4:05that I am underneath who I wasn't being.
- 4:08It was just, I don't know. I feel like adversity brings
- 4:11that brings the the real you out.
- 4:14And even just being yourself can feel like a source of adversity
- 4:18if you don't have that confidence or you're worried
- 4:20about people, what other people think.
- 4:23And it used to paralyze me. And I know I'm not the only one.
- 4:27And and there are times where, you know, I I still do worry
- 4:32about what people think, but it doesn't stop me from doing what
- 4:35I want to do anymore. And that is the victory man.
- 4:38So if you're listening and you feel like you change yourself
- 4:42when you walk into a room to be more of this or less of that
- 4:45because you want people to like you, yeah, just stop.
- 4:49Because it's really awesome to stop.
- 4:52And just then the people who really like the quirks of you
- 4:55and the imperfections you have and your vulnerabilities and
- 5:00your mess ups and your all the shit that you just makes you,
- 5:06you, the people that love you will love that and you'll get
- 5:09over the sting of other people not liking you.
- 5:12Who gives a shit, right? So that's my little adventure
- 5:16and adversity. I wanted to share with you about
- 5:18being myself. I also wanted to as I'm
- 5:22recording this, thank my friends again for just being so
- 5:26supportive. And I like providing space and
- 5:28my family for providing space for me to be myself and discover
- 5:31myself, especially in this last year and as I look at this
- 5:34microphone that my friend bought for me, Ashida and then I this.
- 5:38Yet last night, my friends Eddie and Danielle bought me this
- 5:40microphone shield because they all know about recording and
- 5:44Eddie records music and it's like the universe and my friends
- 5:47are delivering me all these tools, a microphone, a
- 5:50microphone shield, all of which are like symbolic of these are
- 5:54the things that are going to help you be yourself and
- 5:57hopefully me being myself on this podcast.
- 5:59And some people will like it, some people won't, and that's
- 6:01totally cool. I like some podcasts.
- 6:04I don't like others. I have to be OK with that.
- 6:07And these are tools that the universe has sent me through my
- 6:09friends to remind me to be myself.
- 6:12So I want to kind of close this out with just a few quotes about
- 6:17being yourself that I found on goodreads.com.
- 6:20I will tag this page in the show notes as always to thank my
- 6:25sources of inspiration. All right, one is from Coco
- 6:30Chanel. A girl should be two things.
- 6:33Who and what she wants. Love that one.
- 6:38Don't compromise yourself. You're all you have.
- 6:42That was John Grisham in The Rainmaker.
- 6:46All right, what other one do we have here?
- 6:48When you are content to be simply yourself and don't
- 6:51compare or compete, everyone will respect you.
- 6:55That's from Lao Tzu. I probably missed pronounced
- 6:59that a couple more here. About all you can do in life is
- 7:07be who you are. Some people will love you for
- 7:10you, most will love you for what you can do for them, and some
- 7:13won't like you at all. Well, that's just wonderful, but
- 7:18true. So be OK with people not liking
- 7:21you, because especially with this podcast, I'm going to get
- 7:24some reviews. They're going to be like
- 7:25negative, negative, no. And I'm going to be like, it's
- 7:28cool, I'll keep trying this one, Jim Morrison said.
- 7:33A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be
- 7:35yourself, and especially to feel or not feel Whatever you happen
- 7:39to be feeling at any moment is fine with them.
- 7:41That's what real love amounts to, Letting a person be what he
- 7:45or she really is. Very cool.
- 7:52And let's do this one, this last one.
- 7:56This is kind of, well, that's kind of a long 1.
- 7:59Taylor Swift. T Swift in the house.
- 8:02Love you, Love her Amazing concert.
- 8:05Just be yourself. There is no one better Love
- 8:09that. And we're going to tie this up
- 8:15from Roy T Bennett from The Light in the Heart.
- 8:19You are unique. You have different talents and
- 8:22abilities, You don't have to always follow in the footsteps
- 8:26of others. And most important, you should
- 8:29always remind yourself that you don't have to do what everyone
- 8:32else is doing and you have a responsibility to develop the
- 8:36talents that you have been given.
- 8:39So with that, I hope you have a very happy Friday.
- 8:43I hope you be yourself today. I hope I continue to be myself.
- 8:48Even when that negative voice tries to remind me to people
- 8:52please or tone myself down. Screw it be you and the rest
- 8:59will just kind of fall into place.
- 9:01All right people, closing out my sign off here going into the
- 9:05weekend. Let's see what I come up with
- 9:07from this little brain. The next time adventure.
- 9:13Back up The next time. The next time Adversity comes
- 9:19your way. You know what you can do.
- 9:22Just be yourself, man. Be yourself.
- 9:25Take one step at a time. Love you all.
- 9:29Thanks for the love for my 17th Spotify followers.
- 9:33I see you None.
