- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:07Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:11It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presenter by Sea Kick. This episode 474.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corn. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:26Hello to all on this fine evening.
- 0:32Not as cocky as we were after Saturday night.
- 0:34Are we Cocky? No.
- 0:37You were feeling yourself. You were feeling yourself up.
- 0:42You were feeling yourself Saturday.
- 0:44But you know, now that this series is even back up, you know
- 0:47it's cordial. Greetings.
- 0:49Hello. Nice to see everyone.
- 0:52But if the Yankees would have pulled out Game 2, I would have.
- 1:00That would have been insufferable.
- 1:02I would have not even bothered coming on this on this year.
- 1:05Insufferable. For not even having a team in
- 1:07the postseason. OK, All right.
- 1:09Well, we've already acknowledged that we don't need.
- 1:11I mean, if that's the only thing we got, it's fine.
- 1:14Speaking of unsufferable, insufferable Bob Costas sucks
- 1:21that his job. Yeah, let's just get it out of
- 1:23the way. Bob Costas sucks.
- 1:27The app sucks. The the platform sucks.
- 1:31Bob Costas was on the verge of tears when Giancarlo Satan
- 1:36grounded into a double play and apologize for him.
- 1:41Up about it. Why is it every at bat?
- 1:44For two straight games, let's not here, let's OK, we we
- 1:47acknowledge, we acknowledge the Bob Costas thing.
- 1:50But look, there's we need to we if there was ever an episode
- 1:54where we're going to focus on the positive right out of the
- 1:57gate, it has to be this one. We no, yes, we are on track for
- 2:06one of the best post seasons I think ever.
- 2:10And I don't think that's I don't think that's an exaggeration.
- 2:12I don't think we're we're dealing with hyperbole there.
- 2:14I think the with the way we're tracking right now.
- 2:20I mean, you look at the Royals Yankees series right now in
- 2:25terms of runs like, like run separating the two teams, that's
- 2:28the closest series. Three runs over the course of
- 2:32these last two games separate those two teams.
- 2:34And you can make the argument that it's the most boring of the
- 2:36four that we're watching right now because of Bob.
- 2:39Well, that's, that's that's, yeah, I, I, I can't disagree
- 2:45with you there, but. I've never wanted Ron Darling to
- 2:47speak so much just to keep Bob from talking.
- 2:52Yeah, I've never been like a huge, I mean, I don't have
- 2:54anything against Ron Darling, but I all of a sudden I'm, I'm
- 2:57like very fascinated with what Ron Darling has to say on these
- 3:00things. Every like before I speak, Kyle,
- 3:07as mentioned before, we hopped on, I'd like to continue like
- 3:11shut up, dude. Everything he says has a comma.
- 3:14Every sentence has a comma. Break statement.
- 3:18All right, so back to the positive here.
- 3:20Break finish statement. So back to the positives here.
- 3:25All four series I saw this note just 4 minutes were helped on
- 3:30all four series are tied at one apiece.
- 3:33That is kind of cool. For the first time in the
- 3:35Division Series era. It's kind of neat.
- 3:40That's that's quite, that's quite fantastic.
- 3:44I'd say. We didn't have any sweeps,
- 3:47right? And prediction wise, I didn't
- 3:49have any. I had I had the Padres sweeping
- 3:51the Dodgers, which I mean, let's be honest and and we'll
- 3:55obviously we'll touch on all these series, but it I mean, if
- 3:57the Padres head heading back to San Diego, if they can take care
- 4:01of business at home. I mean I've I've only would have
- 4:03been one game off. Still wrong.
- 4:08Well, not necessarily. I mean, I started off O and four
- 4:11you, I think. I guess you would have been 2:00
- 4:13and 2:00 to start after after we finished with game ones.
- 4:17I was Owen 4, so I was feeling awfully great about myself.
- 4:21But you know what they say, it's not about how you start.
- 4:24It's about how you go your next four games, and I'm four I've.
- 4:28Heard that statement. That some have said it not a
- 4:31good phrase. Yeah.
- 4:32So I'm four and on my last four. So do with that information once
- 4:35you will. But Speaking of these series,
- 4:39let's let's let's talk about it, shall we?
- 4:42You want to go? What are you thinking?
- 4:45You want to go? No, you know what?
- 4:50I'm going to do it. We're going to start with it.
- 4:52We're starting with the Mets and Phillies.
- 4:54We're going to start with the Mets and Phillies.
- 4:58Game One. Whatever.
- 5:01Tough, tough, tough way to start when you're like in the bank,
- 5:08yeah, you know, and like you get Schwarber gives you all all you
- 5:11need to get it going. I mean everything you need to
- 5:14jump start. Zach Wheeler, even though the
- 5:19the the window has closed to make his case for the Cy Young
- 5:23was just giving you a little bit of a reminder of how good he
- 5:26was. He I mean, he extremely
- 5:29efficient, extremely dominant and like you said, the Schwarber
- 5:33lead off home run, but just sort of a a flat arrival to the bank
- 5:39for the Phillies wasn't exactly I think what they're building it
- 5:42up to be what they're hoping it to be.
- 5:44But Game 2, pretty safe to say the game of the post season thus
- 5:54far. I mean, I know it's small sample
- 5:56size, but I mean that was. That was electric, that was.
- 6:00Insane baseball game. It was.
- 6:03And I know it was, I can only imagine how heartbreaking it was
- 6:06for Mets fans. But that's one of those games,
- 6:08whether you're on the winning side or the losing side, as a
- 6:11fan or really as a player, that's one of those games where
- 6:15you you're probably feeling pretty fortunate that you were a
- 6:18part of or that you got to be there for or that you were
- 6:20invested in as a fan of one of those teams.
- 6:23Because those don't come around very often, especially on on the
- 6:26the postseason level. I mean that the back and forth,
- 6:32the lead changes the for me, one of the the highlights of that
- 6:37game was the fact that it was the the dudes that you expected
- 6:41or that you would have hoped made a difference, made a
- 6:44difference. And that was that was fun to
- 6:47watch. 100% yeah. Castellanos, man.
- 6:52Have a day. Needed to show up.
- 6:54Needed to show up. Then that was big.
- 6:58Really, really big the back-to-back homers.
- 7:02That was so sick. So we were we were over at my in
- 7:08laws, my father-in-law had football going on on the TV.
- 7:13So I had the game on the iPad, you know, have it like propped
- 7:17up like on the coffee table. You're a little side note here.
- 7:21You're really selling me on these iPads.
- 7:23Like I for the longest time I've been like, I don't like what
- 7:27what's the difference between a phone or like having a laptop,
- 7:30but that sounds like it's actually not 1/2 bad viewing
- 7:33experience for a baseball game. Delightful, delightful.
- 7:36I notice it all. That's all I use it for is if
- 7:40I'm watching a game and it's not on TV, Like it.
- 7:45Like, you know what I mean? Like the wife wants something
- 7:46else on. Sure, sure.
- 7:48She's tired. Happens all the time.
- 7:49Being, you know, being played all day so like are we really
- 7:52going to watch another three hour game?
- 7:53No, no, no, it's cool. Let me throw on the iPad so.
- 7:57Like, it's nice. I am.
- 7:58I'm going to watch. Yeah, but anyway, so we're at
- 8:03the in laws and like I'm trying to my my father-in-law likes
- 8:11baseball for sure. He's definitely a football guy,
- 8:15but he likes baseball. mother-in-law wife.
- 8:20They could kind of care less. Like they know they love it for
- 8:23me, but like they don't need to have it on kind of thing, right?
- 8:26And I'm trying to tell them how different post season baseball
- 8:29is. And I'm explaining them of like
- 8:33regular season games. Anybody and everybody goes.
- 8:36It's like a social event. Half the time at a regular
- 8:39season game on a Sunday in June, half the people there are just
- 8:44there to soak up the sun, have a couple of hot dogs, right?
- 8:48Not right now when October hits, everyone in that stadium is die
- 8:55hard fully invested. And so I would like after those
- 8:59hits, after that home run and then the Castellanos follow up,
- 9:03I was like, I like threw the volume up all the way.
- 9:06I was like, you guys have got to hear this like and the bank was
- 9:09just locked in just going ham. And they were like, what?
- 9:15And I'm like, this is post season baseball.
- 9:18This is what it's about. It's sick, man.
- 9:21It's sick. I love when the dudes show up.
- 9:23I love when it happens at home and just a great game back and
- 9:30forth the Mets are. So freaking pesky.
- 9:32I hate it. They're so pesky, dude, but I
- 9:35can't. I can't even hate like I you
- 9:38can't at this point like this. This is clearly we can talk
- 9:43about how the series could potentially end up for the Mets.
- 9:46Like if they end up getting bounced, OK, that's a
- 9:48conversation for down the road. But like at this point in time,
- 9:52and we kind of touched on it last episode, but this seems to
- 9:55be a different Mets team. And like we can call that raise
- 10:00in the hand. We can call that accountability,
- 10:02like revisionist or whatever, whatever you want to call it,
- 10:06hand up like the the Mets are proving themselves to be a
- 10:11different team. And it's hate to say it, it's
- 10:15sort of being LED. This movement is sort of being
- 10:17led by Peter Alonso. I know.
- 10:21And not just him. Mark Vientos is making a name
- 10:24for himself this post season. No, I know.
- 10:28I mean, he had he had the the game of his short career in Game
- 10:332 and it didn't even matter. Like that's the kind of game
- 10:36that we witnessed in in Game 2. But yeah, you talk about those
- 10:40back-to-back home runs being LED off by Bryce Harper.
- 10:45I had tweeted minutes before that I said the Phillies are
- 10:50showing little to no urgency. And I was starting to get
- 10:54concerned, you know, as a non Phillies fan, of course, that
- 10:59Phillies were going to go quietly into the night down two
- 11:06games to none, heading back to or, or heading to Queens.
- 11:11And you, you kind of just assumed that if there was going
- 11:15to be anybody to to flip the script to get things going a
- 11:18little bit, it was going to be Bryce.
- 11:20And at that point in time, it was that at bat that he needed
- 11:23to do it because up to that point, they were, they had been
- 11:26lifeless. And when he hit that home run,
- 11:30it put him up within a run. It was three to two at that
- 11:33point. And I'm going, you know, that's,
- 11:35that's great. You get the fans back in it.
- 11:40But I, I at the very least you need it tied.
- 11:43Like if you could tack on a couple more, great.
- 11:45But like, at the very least, I feel like you need it tied
- 11:46because of how pesky this Mets team is, like you said, And it
- 11:50proved that it they still needed more beyond that.
- 11:52But when Castianos hit that home run and the crowd double down,
- 11:57I'm like, OK, the the bank is officially here.
- 12:00Like I, I think the Phillies will be fine from here on out.
- 12:03And that I mean they were, they were sweating a little bit
- 12:08towards the end there and obviously pulled it out, but.
- 12:11There are a few things more electric than back-to-back home
- 12:15runs in a post season game. There are a few things that was
- 12:20sick. Can I not to harp on this cost
- 12:24this thing anymore? But can I just say that of the
- 12:28two series that have been given the Fox broadcast, I'm so
- 12:33thankful that it was Mets, Phillies and Padres, Dodgers.
- 12:39It's not even just Costas, it's whatever's going on with their
- 12:44microphones. I don't understand.
- 12:47Like you can hear the change if something happens in the
- 12:51stadium, erupts it like the volume drops down and then Bob
- 12:57Costas's microphone just explodes and then he stops
- 13:02talking and then the crowd is still dumbed down.
- 13:05What is going on? It's horrendous.
- 13:10Like there's there's a bunch of videos on like social media.
- 13:14There are like people like in Yankee saying like just in case
- 13:17you couldn't, you couldn't tell what it sounded like.
- 13:19Like here's the, you know, the in person view or the in person
- 13:23sound. It's just strange.
- 13:25Like it's just weird. Box is superior and it's just
- 13:30just how it is. Yeah, the the audio for the
- 13:34Yankees games probably drowned out a lot of the the boos for
- 13:39Judge, no. No boos.
- 13:42No, I'm sure there were some. No boos.
- 13:46I mean, we're talking about one of the greatest offensive
- 13:48seasons of all time, but par for the course come time for the
- 13:52postseason that that's that's I've just heard that that's not
- 13:57me talking. These are just things that I
- 13:59hear. These are things that I pick up
- 14:00on over the course of a postseason series.
- 14:03We're just postseason as a whole.
- 14:06Anyway, back to the Mets Phillies.
- 14:10Yeah, it, I mean, if it goes without saying, but if, if the
- 14:13Phillies go quietly into the night down O2.
- 14:16That was a must win. That, I mean, yeah, you, you
- 14:19hate throwing that around, but it was, it absolutely was.
- 14:23And even with that win, I'm still a little nervous with the
- 14:27fact that this is now going back to Queen or, or going to Queens
- 14:30I should say. How did you how did you feel
- 14:34about the Sosa start over BOM? That was interesting.
- 14:40It was interesting, but I don't know, that's one of those things
- 14:45where like you, you could look back on and go, wow, that really
- 14:48worked. Or you look back on it and go,
- 14:49well, that was really stupid. Not knowing, not really knowing
- 14:56what Thompson's thought process was there.
- 14:59I can only imagine that it was, or they could, they alluded to
- 15:01it a little bit on the broadcast talking about how so?
- 15:05So it was an energy thing they said.
- 15:07It was an energy thing they said.
- 15:09So we they needed like a little bit of a jolt and I'm like, I
- 15:12get it. Boehm's a fan favorite.
- 15:16Yeah, but that's that, that's one of those things.
- 15:19And I personally have been there, not at the the big league
- 15:22level, of course, but I've been there in my playing days.
- 15:25There's one instance in particular that I can think back
- 15:27on where I got SAT and it it pissed me off so much that my
- 15:31next at bat, it took the little jump on the mound deep, like
- 15:38whatever. And that felt good because I was
- 15:40like, OK, you know, kind of woke me up a little bit.
- 15:43Maybe that's what he was trying to do with Bohm because need a
- 15:46little bit more from Bohm. He eventually gets in, I think.
- 15:49Was it defensively or did he did he get brought in for an at bat?
- 15:54And then I don't remember how he got brought.
- 15:58Into the game. I think it wasn't at bat, but I
- 16:02mean he obviously didn't do anything major.
- 16:05He's not hitting like wall scrapers or three run home runs.
- 16:08But you know, that's I think that's one of those decisions.
- 16:12It helps the fact that they won the game.
- 16:13It's that's one of those decisions where kind of.
- 16:15Gets hidden. Yeah, maybe we got away with one
- 16:18there. It didn't affect us in the next
- 16:19just. Interesting.
- 16:20Just thought it was interesting because I mean that and like,
- 16:26you got to know your guys. I'm I'm not going to sit here
- 16:29and say I know the Phillies roster better than Rob Thompson.
- 16:33You know what I mean? He's if that's what that was, if
- 16:36that's what the intent was, he's got to know how Alec bomb Alec
- 16:42bomb ticks so I can see it. I can see it.
- 16:46Hopefully it ignites something in him game three if he does get
- 16:49the start. But just strange thought.
- 16:52Kodai Singa in game one looks pretty good.
- 16:55Like pitching wise, just like I'm kind of running through
- 16:58things in my head like of notable performances you.
- 17:03Know what I mean? I think of all of the moments
- 17:06that happened in that second game, I think you and I were on
- 17:10the same page in terms of just like what just happened that the
- 17:15Bryson Stott to run triple to put them up.
- 17:20I think that was the moment for you and I because we were we
- 17:23were texting back and forth and I was like, in my head, I'm just
- 17:27going this has to be the thing that that wins in the game.
- 17:30And then of course, the aforementioned Mark Vientos in
- 17:34the 9th or top of the ninth, put some, put some even at six.
- 17:41And I'm going not again, not we. And it's not just like a
- 17:45Phillies Mets thing. It's just like, is this really
- 17:50going to be the narrative that that pushes this Mets team like
- 17:54to the World Series? Like the team is just not going
- 17:57to go away. And when when that happened, I'm
- 18:00going, I don't know if this Phillies team stand a chance
- 18:03like it because they did all they could to get back.
- 18:05I mean, with Harper with the bomb, Cassie with the bomb,
- 18:08Bryson Stotts moment, I'm going, what more can they do outside of
- 18:11putting up like a dozen? What more can they do?
- 18:14And fortunately, they held on to to fortunately for the Phillies,
- 18:18they they held on to win the game.
- 18:19But. I mean, what, what would I, what
- 18:22did I tell you after, after the last series, after the wild card
- 18:27round and then my predictions for this?
- 18:29It was it was around the back end of the Mets bullpen.
- 18:34And Edwin Diaz is not the Edwin Diaz of two years ago.
- 18:40He's just not it doesn't it doesn't feel like he was before
- 18:45that before the injury, you know, yeah.
- 18:50And when he when he's being used in non closer scenarios and it
- 19:00just doesn't feel quite right. We've seen a lot of that, more
- 19:04so than I can remember in seasons past.
- 19:06We're seeing a lot more of like. I agree, I think.
- 19:08There's the last guys using higher leverage situations now.
- 19:11I think there's there's less names that are like a for sure
- 19:14closer. Give me the 9th.
- 19:16I mean, we'll get to it, but like Class A coming in to finish
- 19:20out the 8th today, like. How do you feel about that?
- 19:23Like 'cause I was kind of thinking about it myself, 'cause
- 19:25I'm like, I, I'm very much of I'm, I'm, I'm definitely a fan
- 19:29of like the traditional like give me a starter that'll go 6
- 19:33plus. Give me a guy that you can that
- 19:36you know is going to give me a guy even in the 8th that you
- 19:38know is going to be your 8th inning guy and then have.
- 19:40Your lock down the problem, I feel like this setup role has
- 19:44been lost. Yeah.
- 19:46And and I think this three batter minimum and finishing the
- 19:52inning kind of situation is definitely become a part of the
- 19:57puzzle when you're seeing guys that not necessarily saying like
- 20:01a closer coming in to finish the 8th isn't going to go back in
- 20:04the 9th, but you're seeing that manipulated in certain ways,
- 20:08sure, but there's just so many names out there that aren't like
- 20:15a Class A. They're not like a dominant
- 20:18league leading. I'm coming in in the ninth no
- 20:23matter what. The end of the game is mine no
- 20:24matter what. There really isn't that that
- 20:28common anymore, which is just strange.
- 20:30I think it just shows how hard that position is.
- 20:34But I just thought it was, it's interesting, you know what I
- 20:39mean? And Edwin Diaz is like, they're
- 20:41using him a lot. They use him a lot in the wild
- 20:44card round. You're seeing him a lot already,
- 20:47like, and it's multiple innings, it's early.
- 20:50It just doesn't feel the exact same.
- 20:55Tyler Mcgrill is, is solid, don't get me wrong.
- 20:57Yeah, I think he had a good chunk of saves this year, but
- 21:04it's a part of the, it's a part of the the equation for winning
- 21:08ball clubs, that's all. I think another factor that you
- 21:13have to take into account with that equation is that you're
- 21:15seeing teams. I saw a good bit of it today.
- 21:17I mean, I think the Yankees emptied the entire pen and as
- 21:22well as I, I think some of the other teams that played today
- 21:25also very heavily pushed the pen in terms of usage.
- 21:30Given that the off day is coming up.
- 21:32Like you're seeing teams utilize that off day a little bit more.
- 21:35Like you're seeing more of a shift like we talked about with
- 21:37guys maybe in being asked to perform in their non traditional
- 21:44role or inning and then you're also seeing them use a little
- 21:47bit more on on the with. These off days.
- 21:51The front sides of these off days, yeah.
- 21:52So it's it's been an interesting.
- 21:54Darling did come up with a really good point where he
- 21:57talked about you almost got to be careful of when those guys
- 22:02are going so often, when those relievers are throwing so often
- 22:08in a series, you got to think of what part of the lineup they're
- 22:11seeing, all right? And if he sees 456 and maybe he
- 22:15mows them down, maybe it's a 10/12 pitch inning.
- 22:21If you running back out there the next game and it's 456
- 22:25again. That's, you know, like when
- 22:30hitters start getting multiple looks at relievers throughout a
- 22:32series, it's going to change things.
- 22:35So you almost kind of have to manage of like what part of the
- 22:37lineup they're seeing, not to mention, you know, just like a
- 22:39dangerous part of the game or, you know, a spot that they got
- 22:42to get out of something like that.
- 22:44Like there's different pieces of that too.
- 22:48This is this is what post season baseball is at this point.
- 22:54I mean, it's it's about pushing the right buttons at the right
- 22:57time. And I I'm pretty impressed so
- 23:00far. I mean, like you, you can't hold
- 23:04anything against Carlos Mendoza. You can't say he didn't press
- 23:07the right buttons at the end of the bullpen.
- 23:10I just think if if the Phillies offense can get that type of
- 23:17confidence off of your stoppers, off of your guys that should be
- 23:22shut in the door, if they're going to get that type of
- 23:25confidence early in a series, it's I think it could play a
- 23:28role later. And that was a heck of a dub.
- 23:34The Castillanos PP and son moment after the walk off.
- 23:39Dude, that's that's one of my, that's one of my favorite.
- 23:43Like it's not, it's not a bit, but like just one of my favorite
- 23:47like micro events that that pops up so often.
- 23:51I feel like is is or storyline, I guess you could say is, is
- 23:55Cassie with his yeah, with his son Liam.
- 23:57I mean that it's, it's not just like a once every now and then
- 24:01thing. Like if there's a big moment and
- 24:02Nick Cassiano says a part of it, you can guarantee you're going
- 24:05to see Liam on the screen, which I, which I just loved.
- 24:08It's Philly has adopted them, has adopted Liam as their son.
- 24:12It's it's the sickest thing. It's going to be sick when we
- 24:16see Liam in in 15 years in Philly.
- 24:23But it's not done. I just, it's so cool, like we
- 24:28hear about like kids growing up in clubhouses and kids like that
- 24:32eventually become ball players that like they were around it
- 24:35their whole lives. Like this is different, dude.
- 24:37You're sitting in front row, like right behind the backstop.
- 24:40On national TV after a walk off just.
- 24:43Then Dad's coming up celebrating with you like that's sick, sick
- 24:47moment. Speaking of Dad, let's talk
- 24:50about the Padres these I'll tell you what, man, these game twos
- 24:57got the juices going. I mean, and the, the, the, the
- 25:05frustrating part going into this game, having just watched the
- 25:10Phillies, the Mets Phillies game, you're going, I kind of
- 25:14hate that this was the first game to happen because like,
- 25:16you're not going to get an encore for, to like at any level
- 25:22that would compare to this game. And I mean, the scoreboard to me
- 25:27did not reflect the, the emotion, the impact that this
- 25:34Game 2 between the Padres and Dodgers had on their series as a
- 25:37whole. I mean, this was we're, I think
- 25:41we're knocking on the door and, and some might disagree, we
- 25:45might be knocking on the door of, of things boiling over
- 25:49between these two teams. I.
- 25:51Mean because like I said, it was 10/2 to the on the scoreboard to
- 25:55close things out, but it felt pretty much the entire game like
- 25:59it was a one run game. There's just so many moments,
- 26:04there's so many things, so many narratives that are happening
- 26:09inside of this, and I feel like Manny Machado is just in the
- 26:14middle, stirring this pot more than anybody.
- 26:17It goes back to what we're saying with the Mets.
- 26:19Phillies, like the guy who you would hope is in the middle of
- 26:23all of this, are the guys that are in the middle of all this,
- 26:26Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis. I mean, like Fernando Tatis
- 26:32clearly does not care about anything that the Padres fans
- 26:36are saying to him, anything that they're wishing upon him or
- 26:40Dodgers fans do not care. And I just, I'm kind of here for
- 26:45it. Bring it on in right field,
- 26:49Dodger Stadium. And what's crazy about that is
- 26:53that, you know, Manny Machado is just as fired up, if not more
- 26:59than Fernando Tati says. Because in any other situation,
- 27:03I'm convinced that Machado would would put his arm around
- 27:07Fernando, be like, hey dude, let's dial it back a little bit.
- 27:10But homies like on the top step blowing kisses to people in the
- 27:13stands. Wild.
- 27:15And nobody's saying anything to him.
- 27:17So I'm like, clearly this Padres to you like as a whole, as a
- 27:20collective unit is they're they're just OK letting it eat
- 27:23right now. They're they're, they're OK
- 27:25twisting the knife a little bit. He's chewing his gum and then
- 27:29like the just the most obnoxious way possible.
- 27:32All of it. I'm just, I love.
- 27:34Them I mean the fake tears. Yeah, dude.
- 27:40I'm at the point now and I, we've, we've probably commented
- 27:43on this in years past, but I'm at the point now where his whole
- 27:47like what? It's not the euro step that he
- 27:51does, it's just it's like the. Stutter.
- 27:55The yeah, the stutter coming around 3rd.
- 27:57I'm at the point now where I'm like, you know what?
- 27:59This is very clearly the thing that you love to do in moments
- 28:02like this. You're going, you're going deep
- 28:05twice in a game against your most hated rival.
- 28:09Go for it. Go.
- 28:10For it. Oh man.
- 28:14Let's start in the first, though.
- 28:15Let's start in the first. You have Fernando leading things
- 28:19off in the first with a home run and then in the bottom half
- 28:23you've got the jerks and Profar robbery air quotes.
- 28:29I was sitting there. I was like what I.
- 28:31Was just what's going on? I was with Joe.
- 28:33Davis I was like, it's gone. It's one go up on the
- 28:39scoreboard. You're like what?
- 28:41I did notice that, yeah, the scoreboard folks were a little,
- 28:44little trigger happy there. Quick, real quick.
- 28:48Quick to fire from the hip. It's what's wild is that you saw
- 28:51the interaction of Profar in those Dodger fans and there's
- 28:55like this head shaking, like buck up flexing and then the
- 29:00Dodger fans like, all right, respect, all good-natured.
- 29:03And then like 6-7 innings later it just turns into just flipping
- 29:07birds. It's like a.
- 29:09War zone out there, Yeah. What happened?
- 29:12I thought you had. A a respect for my guy Profar.
- 29:15And I thought we were friends. Just going off on him.
- 29:21Yeah. Well, did you see, did you see
- 29:24the clip where he had what did he bring them a ball?
- 29:28Is that what I saw? He brought them a ball.
- 29:31Did he? I didn't see that.
- 29:32Yeah. And then I think, I don't know
- 29:34if that was, I don't know if that's the one that they threw,
- 29:37But then there was a ball that gets thrown at him.
- 29:39And then things are, I saw, I don't know if you saw this, but
- 29:43there was something being thrown at the guys in the pen too, in
- 29:46the Padres. Pen.
- 29:47I saw the TikTok of like someone in the crowd.
- 29:50Yeah, it was like a pen. It was like a souvenir cup, I
- 29:53think, or something got thrown in there.
- 29:55And like that, I, I don't know, forgive me, I don't know, like
- 29:58what role she has, but there was some woman there, maybe a
- 30:01trainer or something. She was looking up in the
- 30:03stands, but the guys were looking out on the field and you
- 30:06see her pointing like, oh, like, what is this?
- 30:10And the guys turn around and they're like ducking.
- 30:12And then it's, you see these like souvenir cups or I don't
- 30:15know what it was like falling to the ground.
- 30:16And I'm like, well, what are we doing here?
- 30:19And, and like the, the Fox broadcast and, and other people
- 30:23were talking about how like, well, we don't want to, we don't
- 30:25want to generalize here. Like we don't want to generalize
- 30:29a whole fan base by the actions of a few.
- 30:31But I'm also like, this isn't the first running we've had with
- 30:34Dodgers fans acting out like, let's, let's not, let's not fool
- 30:39ourselves here. It's true there's quite a
- 30:42there's there's a few fan bases that can they can do this kind
- 30:45of stuff. It's never cool, It's never it's
- 30:47never OK. It's just wild that like you can
- 30:55watch a player instigate so much and then like cower and like
- 31:06point out fans specifically to security guards out of it's just
- 31:10it's just different. Like I.
- 31:12Well, I don't know. Are you saying are you saying
- 31:14Profar was cowering because I don't I mean.
- 31:18No, I'm not saying him. I think just there, there's
- 31:21examples of athletes all the time where they're like they're
- 31:24ready to throw hands with a fan and then the second there's like
- 31:29something that actually starts outside of hand gestures and
- 31:33yelling, they're ready to go tell mom and dad, you know what
- 31:37I'm saying? Like there's a little bit of
- 31:39that vibe going. On well, there's a little bit of
- 31:41that like with with players and fans, but I mean, we talk about
- 31:44all the time. There's you have that same vibe
- 31:47with players and other players like when, when it's time to
- 31:50take the gloves off, guys are like already back at the top
- 31:53step and we're like, OK, well what was that all about?
- 31:55Doesn't happen. I don't know.
- 31:57I'm ready for like Ron Artest to run into the.
- 32:00Give me a little mouse at the palace and.
- 32:02Throw and just smoke somebody. I mean, give me Gary Sheffield
- 32:07going into the right field stands like give me that.
- 32:10That's what I need. I need that.
- 32:13But then I mean, you want to talk about storylines this game,
- 32:16you have the you have the Jack Flaherty striking out Machado
- 32:19thing. And then they start chirping and
- 32:24I have to ask between those two, who are you putting your money
- 32:27on? Because I know who I'm putting
- 32:29my money on, but I don't. I didn't know if it'd be the
- 32:31same for you. I don't know, man.
- 32:36I think, I think Jack can surprise some people.
- 32:38Flaherty's got, I think, the height and the weight on
- 32:42Machado. I think Machado is a is a
- 32:45chirper. I don't think Machado is.
- 32:49You think Machado is a lover, not a fighter?
- 32:51Yeah, I don't know if he's got that gene in him.
- 32:54There's just something about it. Machado was really in the middle
- 33:00of he's in the eye of the storm of all of this.
- 33:03Did you see that notification that came through that Dave
- 33:06Roberts was upset 'cause he thought Machado threw a ball at
- 33:08him? Yeah, and I just saw a friend of
- 33:10the pod, Dallas Braden, he had, he had shared the video of it,
- 33:16'cause I guess I. Didn't see it, Does it look like
- 33:18it? It was like a tough video to
- 33:19track down 'cause it was just kind of here and there.
- 33:22But yeah, they're talking to he Dallas was talking about the
- 33:26speed, like he was analysing the speed.
- 33:28Like was this something where he's just casually tossing ball
- 33:31to the dugout or is he like letting me a little bit?
- 33:35I mean, to me as like a, as a somewhat objective fan here.
- 33:40Like I, I have obviously I have my thoughts on Machado, but
- 33:42I've, I've, I've grown on Machado a lot.
- 33:45So I'm trying to look at this objectively.
- 33:47It's like as close to borderline I think as you can get.
- 33:50Like it's it's definitely quicker than just your little
- 33:52one hop to the ball boy. But it's not, I mean, he's not
- 33:56he's not lighting up any radar guns with it.
- 33:58We'll just say that. And then, yeah, you and then
- 34:01Dave Roberts comes out and says he's he felt targeted with the
- 34:04ball. And I'm like, what he Machado
- 34:07literally played on your team. Like do you do you think he's
- 34:09that swept up in the moment? I don't know.
- 34:13A lot of wild moments, a lot of wild moments, but the Ochani bat
- 34:17flip, how can we forget game one?
- 34:20My goodness, that was like. That was pent up.
- 34:24It was kind of epic when I keep seeing the clips of like the the
- 34:32presser where they were like, are you nervous at all for your
- 34:35first appearance? Nope.
- 34:36It's just like the clearest English I've ever heard him say.
- 34:41Nope. I.
- 34:44Immediately it's a Ding Dong. I would have loved if that was
- 34:46his first at bat of the of of the postseason.
- 34:49Other than like, I mean how much more perfect does this guy's
- 34:54like career arc get? I know, but the bat flip was
- 34:58just like, I don't. I haven't really seen that out
- 35:01of him before. It wasn't, I mean, I've seen him
- 35:03toss it aside before after like a big month.
- 35:06But that, yeah, there was some like, intent behind that.
- 35:09And it wasn't just that, it was the emotion.
- 35:11Like verbal. All the way around the basis.
- 35:14He was, he was yelling out something and he, that's what
- 35:18I'm saying, that was pent up. And he's like, I finally I'm in
- 35:21a game outside of like the WBC, of course, but he's like, I'm
- 35:24finally in a game that matters and I can like actually show
- 35:28out. And he, I think, I think the
- 35:32ball at the bat and he was like, I'm here.
- 35:35There, I like that he's this way.
- 35:37I like seeing it out of him. I feel like there's like a like
- 35:41a good balance in that lineup of, you know, you got like a
- 35:46like a Will Smith and a Freddie Freeman very much just like a
- 35:50head down jog. You you have some Max Muncie
- 35:56that I've he's had some moments in history.
- 36:01Kiki's like kind of flamboyant Tay Oscar like these like
- 36:05Mookie. I would say he's more on the
- 36:09reserve side, but you can see a little bit of a spike or a bat
- 36:14flip and then it's normal. So it's cool to have like the
- 36:18biggest baseball player on the planet doing that, man.
- 36:23It's like it's good. It's good.
- 36:26It's a great series so far. This is not disappointing at
- 36:29all. And like you said, I think the
- 36:30score of game game was a Game 2. Two.
- 36:35Yeah, it. Doesn't reflect like how how
- 36:39intense that game was. I mean that wheels fell off in
- 36:42the late in the game, but. I mean, you get to a point where
- 36:47the game so far out of reach for the Dodgers, but the more runs
- 36:51that the Padres put up like it it when it became a full on
- 36:54blowout, you're going OK, like games out of hand for the
- 36:57Dodgers. But this is becoming a storyline
- 36:59in and of itself where you have the Dodgers just or you have the
- 37:02Padres absolutely manhandling the Dodgers before they go home.
- 37:07Like I, I, I love the fact that all these series are, we're,
- 37:10we're switching venues now. Like we're at that point where,
- 37:13where guys are getting on, on planes and, and heading
- 37:16elsewhere. Because you're seeing, you're
- 37:20seeing this, we're at this point in the series, where can these
- 37:23teams carry that momentum either back home or, or on the road?
- 37:28Because like, like with the Phillies, for example, you're,
- 37:30you're, can you, can you make that last in Queens?
- 37:32And if you're the Padres, can you build on that and and build
- 37:35off the energy that you know Petco's going to have when you
- 37:37get home? Oh, and that's a great point
- 37:39because three out of these four series Rd. team won the second
- 37:44game and it's taking that W back home, taking some of that
- 37:48momentum back home, right? So, yeah, great, great series.
- 37:53Trying to think of, man, there's just so much that went on.
- 37:58Jackson Merrill, by the way. Like, my goodness, that guy's a
- 38:04dog. You know, I I should have asked
- 38:08the same question back when I asked a question about Jackson
- 38:11Cheerio. Like is it too soon to expect
- 38:13too much from Jackson Cheerio? I should have just asked the
- 38:16same question for this. Jackson as well.
- 38:18Like, is it too soon to expect too much?
- 38:20The answer is clearly no. Like this guy is this guy is
- 38:23ready for this moment and he's he's contributing meaningful ABS
- 38:30and meaningful play in games that they absolutely like you.
- 38:34If you're the Padres, you absolutely had to go in a Dodger
- 38:36Stadium and at least split like you just you just had to do
- 38:38that. Yeah.
- 38:40And he played a big role in that.
- 38:42And another guy that played a huge role, Kyle Agashioka, you
- 38:45would know better than I would. Where is this coming from?
- 38:47He's got he's got three home runs already this post season.
- 38:50He's got sneaky pop, he's got sneaky pop.
- 38:53He just didn't get like regular ABS as a Yankee.
- 38:57He's he's got that in him. Dude, I remember the last,
- 39:03obviously not this year, but last spring training, dude had
- 39:07like 8-8 or nine home runs in spring training.
- 39:10Everyone's like, who is this? Who is this guy?
- 39:12Iggy's? Iggy's got it, man.
- 39:14And he's that's, that's what I was talking about.
- 39:16Like kind of the balance in the in the lineup of your head down
- 39:20and jog kind of guys. He's one of those guys.
- 39:24For sure. Oh yeah, for sure.
- 39:26Like he, if you took him out of the uniform and said he was, you
- 39:30know, if he's working at Chase Bank as a financial advisor, I'd
- 39:33be like, yeah, I buy that. Oh, babe, we got an appointment
- 39:38today at 4:30 with Kyle Fugashioka.
- 39:41Can you make sure we got all our statements with us?
- 39:44Like that's. Yeah, no, that's, that's, that's
- 39:48completely accurate. I've I could totally see that.
- 39:51I've heard he's just like a, a terrible interview too.
- 39:54You've probably, you've probably heard a handful of those.
- 39:55He's super dry. He's so dry, but everyone says
- 40:01he's like all the interviews I hear is this.
- 40:03He's one of the funniest guys in the clubhouse because of that.
- 40:09I love it. Go Higgy.
- 40:13Really the only other thing I feel like from that game to talk
- 40:16about before we moved on was, I mean, we sort of talked about
- 40:19it, but the. Oh, is Xandro OK?
- 40:21Yeah, I think it was a hamstring issue I saw.
- 40:24Pulled Kurt Gibson. Yeah, it didn't clearly didn't
- 40:27affect him too much. Friggin limping around.
- 40:29He loves he loves the big games in Dodger Stadium.
- 40:32Shout out 2018. But yeah, the the game delay as
- 40:36a whole, we sort of alluded to it earlier, but you know, you
- 40:41just can't have that happening. And you have you have that.
- 40:47And then what followed was the Manny Machado team meeting in
- 40:51the dugout, which I'm going to continue this narrative.
- 40:56What did you think? Did you like that?
- 40:57I loved it. I.
- 40:59I that's what I'm saying. I'm going to continue this this
- 41:01personal narrative. And I think you're sort of in
- 41:03the same boat. Collectively, I think we've kind
- 41:05of grown. Manny Machado has grown on us
- 41:08sort of at the same time. But this is just another example
- 41:11of like I have like, what more? Sure, if you're a Dodgers fan,
- 41:16you're probably looking at the the Machado, Jack Flaherty
- 41:18situation going. This guy's a punk, like
- 41:20whatever. But as somebody who doesn't have
- 41:22a dog in the fight, I'm looking at this series going, OK, yeah,
- 41:25he got swept up in the moment with Jack Flaherty.
- 41:27But Manny Machado 7-8 years ago is not doing this.
- 41:33He's not doing this. And the fact that you you've got
- 41:37him calling a team meeting when they're already up by a handful
- 41:41at that point. I saw people going like they're,
- 41:44they're like tweeting out like, why, why, like why do this now?
- 41:48You're already up, like, what's the point?
- 41:51It clearly worked. They tacked on, I guess, like
- 41:54almost a half dozen more. I got to guess it's like a, it's
- 41:57like a let's just, let's just stay focused in our business,
- 42:00get out of here, you know what I mean?
- 42:02That's a sign of charity to me. If you get roped into antics, if
- 42:06you get roped into, you know, any kind of loser mentality
- 42:10around this stuff, if you do so, if you react in a certain way
- 42:15and get yourself suspended, like that damages us, you know what I
- 42:20mean? So I like it, I like it.
- 42:24I don't. It's so rare to see that in
- 42:27baseball, an in game like team meeting, huddle up in the dugout
- 42:33kind of thing. I'm a fan.
- 42:36I'm cool with it. Go pods, man, Go pods.
- 42:43Friend of the friend of the pod, Grand Meg Greg Amsinger, who was
- 42:46talking about it on on MLB Network today.
- 42:48He was like, or I guess it was I watched it this morning, but I
- 42:51guess it was the show from from immediately after the game last
- 42:55night with the Padres and Dodgers.
- 42:56But he said he's like, I got to he's like I got to take I got a
- 43:00trend. He's like, you know, I love
- 43:01trends. He goes Padres are winning the
- 43:04World Series and the guy like Harold, the other guy's like,
- 43:06what are you talking about? And he goes think back on the
- 43:10teams in the post season that had their quote UN quote leader
- 43:15have it hold a team meeting in the middle of the game in the
- 43:17dugout. He pointed to two instances, I
- 43:20think it was 2 of 100 pence in 2012 and 2014, I believe, in
- 43:27which he did that went on to win the World Series.
- 43:29He pointed to the instance in which David Ortiz did in 2013 in
- 43:34Saint Louis. They went on to win that World
- 43:36Series. So he's like, say what you will,
- 43:39he's like, that's my take, That's my trend.
- 43:41Padres are going to win the World Series.
- 43:42So I'm like, I mean, he's he's not wrong.
- 43:45If that trend continues like it's I don't think that trend
- 43:49has failed yet. So we'll see how how it shakes
- 43:51out when they head back to San Diego.
- 43:53But I mean, this is, I mean, I, I, I think most people probably
- 43:58agree, unless you're a fan of one of the American League
- 44:01teams, the National League Series right now I think are.
- 44:04Electric. Great.
- 44:05Are attracting the most attention right now and
- 44:07rightfully so like the I think these we talked.
- 44:09About this this is you know, these were the more marketable
- 44:13series you know, division rivals throughout the year, you know
- 44:20built up aggression fan bases yeah, I would agree.
- 44:27I I mean, I I think it was a pretty good game today.
- 44:30I don't know how much of that that Guardians Tigers game you
- 44:33caught. I mean, that was.
- 44:35Yeah, I was talking about it, I told.
- 44:36You before the before this series I said if you like
- 44:40baseball being played the right way, this is that series.
- 44:44We're just seeing really quality pitching, really quality defense
- 44:49and I mean I've I'm loving it. I'm loving it.
- 44:55I know it's not the most sexy one game one just kind of flush
- 44:59that Guardian Tigers Guardians just cancelled out the Tigers
- 45:06chaos just said yeah, We'll we'll take your opener and raise
- 45:11ya. Well, they they tweeted
- 45:13something out from the like the Tigers official account tweeted
- 45:15something out and it was like chaos and had a picture of like
- 45:18all the guys from their pen. And it was like soon.
- 45:20The caption was like, soon, and then they go and put up A5.
- 45:24The the Guardians put up A5 spot in the first before a run before
- 45:27an out had even been been recorded.
- 45:29People seem to forget that five runs before and out have been
- 45:31recorded. And then I saw people in their
- 45:33prize going, yeah, that was chaos for sure.
- 45:36You nailed that one. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:39So not much to to write home about that, but game two I mean.
- 45:44Well, a redeeming point for the Tigers, though, in game one.
- 45:47Reece Olson, like that. I know that Game 1 as a whole
- 45:51for the Tigers probably get swept under the rug, but like
- 45:54Game 2 might not happen for the Tigers if you don't have Reese
- 45:57Olson going out there and giving you 5 innings of that's true of
- 46:00run ball. I mean, he gave up the home run
- 46:02but settled down after that and that's some time.
- 46:05Kind of just take a take a bullet, you know what I mean?
- 46:08Sure. Kind of just take E1 for the
- 46:10team there. Sorry but you were saying Game
- 46:122. Chewed up, but yeah, game two.
- 46:14I mean, Scuba Boyd. Whoa, man.
- 46:19I mean just excellent pitching, excellent defence, big Christmas
- 46:29Noel and and right field with that play in the corner.
- 46:32There's a lot of good outfield play today.
- 46:34They talked about it a lot on the broadcast.
- 46:38I told you, these teams are just they're, they're very sound,
- 46:42very well coached. They do not beat themselves.
- 46:46It's just they're going to lose because the other team truly
- 46:50beat them. That's the Guardians.
- 46:51Both of these teams play. They match up really well.
- 46:54They do, they do. And, and people can sit there
- 46:56and question like, well, what was Stephen Vogt doing bringing
- 46:59Class A in and A and A cause at that point it was what?
- 47:03Nothing. Yeah, yeah, nothing.
- 47:05Nothing. Right, Yeah, 'cause it was
- 47:06finished up 3. Nothing that you could go like.
- 47:09Why is he bringing? Him in that's the rule.
- 47:12I know he did it in the 8th to go try and get that lasts out of
- 47:17the 8th. Right, right.
- 47:18But but that's what I'm Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 47:20Tie game at home. Closer all day.
- 47:23Yeah, but I mean, people still asking the question, but it's
- 47:27one of those sentences where it's like you didn't the
- 47:29Guardians did not beat themselves.
- 47:31The tiger, Carrie Carpenter to be exact, showed up.
- 47:35She's. Talking about stringing hits
- 47:36together, it's two singles before that.
- 47:39Yeah, yeah. And that was that was the first
- 47:44three run Homer he's given up in his career.
- 47:48The first three run Homer, the guy he had given up two earned
- 47:52runs since like the middle of June and gave up three and one
- 47:56at bat. This just doesn't happen.
- 47:58And this I say it, I have I'll give myself credit.
- 48:02I held off until like two games into the Vision series says I
- 48:06usually say it like after the first game of the wild card.
- 48:09This just goes to show you that nobody really knows what they're
- 48:13talking about because what would the effect?
- 48:15What would the the the so-called experts told you would have
- 48:18happened in that scenario? Class A is going to hold him
- 48:21scoreless. They're going to walk it off in
- 48:23the ninth. Because probably said that
- 48:26because he's dominant. And Class A has never given up a
- 48:29three run Homer in his career. So why would it happen now?
- 48:32That's the beauty of baseball, specifically the beauty of
- 48:35postseason baseball. Anything happens.
- 48:37So at the end of the day, nobody really knows what they're
- 48:38talking about. We're just here to talk about it
- 48:40after the fact, I guess. But that was a beautiful thing.
- 48:43But you mentioned Scubble and you also, you also mentioned
- 48:47Boyd. I, I don't want Matthew Boyd's
- 48:50efforts here to get lost or or overshadowed by Taylor Scubble,
- 48:55because you have to remember he has not had a he's not had a
- 48:57full season. He only had what, a month or two
- 49:02worth of starts? Maybe I, but I think maybe like
- 49:04a month worth of starts before the post season and the fact
- 49:08that he was able to come out there and give you nearly five
- 49:12innings of of scoreless ball, that's all you can ask.
- 49:18Pitch count wise too, I think he was fine.
- 49:21He was like in his 70s. Yeah, I think he was.
- 49:23He was getting up there a little bit, but it ultimately, and and
- 49:29I know you, I just said not to let it happen, but it
- 49:32unfortunately just gets overshadowed by what school did.
- 49:36I mean 7 innings of scoreless ball, 8 KS.
- 49:42I mean this, this guy is as automatic as automatic can get
- 49:46in the postseason. It's disgusting.
- 49:50It's fun to watch. It's really, really special.
- 49:53I think they were saying on the broadcast they're boys.
- 49:57Yeah, former Tiger Matthew Boyd. Yeah, so they're boys.
- 50:01So I I think there is probably a little extra little ampage
- 50:05coming in for, for Matthew Boyd, but just a really, really all
- 50:12around fun game. Fun atmosphere too.
- 50:16Credits a progressive they they looked like that place was
- 50:19popping for. Sure, they were in it.
- 50:22They were in it, but this is, I just said it in the Mets Philly
- 50:26series, if you can build confidence off of a back end of
- 50:31a bullpen, specifically a closer early in a series, it makes you
- 50:36feel like that moment's going to come around again later in the
- 50:39series. And and we've done it before.
- 50:42We can do it again. That's what that does.
- 50:46That's a that's a great point. They were talking about.
- 50:48I guess it would have been, was it Ron Darling that said this on
- 50:50the broadcast he was talking about, he had actually maybe
- 50:53heard this from somebody else. I don't remember who said it,
- 50:55but talking about the the fact that in a postseason you're more
- 51:00than likely going to have to beat their best guy in the back
- 51:03end. At least Frank or twice.
- 51:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. There was Frank or that said
- 51:07that. Yeah, like if if if you want to
- 51:09win a World Series. Got it.
- 51:11Yeah, at some point and one of these matchups on the way there,
- 51:15you were going to have to beat the team, the other team's best
- 51:19guy in the back end. And like we talked about, some
- 51:22of these roles can be a little fluid.
- 51:23But for the Tigers, it's going to be Class A and you you could
- 51:27probably going to have to beat him a time or two.
- 51:28And they they took care of it once already.
- 51:31We'll see if it happens again. Yeah, slider just was not what
- 51:38it normally is today for Class A just a lot of lot of cement
- 51:43mixers, a lot of spinning. And like his version of a cement
- 51:46mixer is better than most sliders.
- 51:49Like he you saw hedges a couple times kind of pat the dirt like
- 51:53I want this ball down, I want this ball down and it just
- 51:56didn't get it just didn't get down there.
- 51:58I don't think you really have the command.
- 52:03It makes you wonder because they they put him in in that first
- 52:09game with a 7 nothing lead to lock it down and just kind of
- 52:13finish up the game. And I think there's a couple
- 52:16different arguments you can make with that.
- 52:18Maybe Steven Vogue is saying like, you know, let's just don't
- 52:21let them carry any momentum into Game 2.
- 52:23Let's just go ahead and close the door now.
- 52:25Don't let him, you know, get any solid ABS.
- 52:32But that does say that when you're talking about a closer
- 52:35that was a league leader in saves this year, it has been
- 52:39dominant for a year plus. What does that do?
- 52:45What does that do, You know? And I know they had a day off,
- 52:47but like, these are some of the things to an equation that you
- 52:51can wonder and ask and yeah. Yeah, like what does it do to a
- 52:57guy's psyche who's just used to going in and shutting the door
- 53:00in a close, high leverage situation?
- 53:02You you throw them out there and for all intents and purposes of
- 53:06blow out. And and he looked good, he did
- 53:09fine. He looked great, but how does
- 53:11that carry over then? Like when when you when when the
- 53:16phone rings and it's for him and the pen and you're you're
- 53:20telling him to get hot, but he looks out at the scoreboard and
- 53:23they're up 7. What does that do for his?
- 53:27I just. Yeah.
- 53:28And like, imagine the the level of adrenaline that he would feel
- 53:33if he didn't throw game one and this was his first appearance in
- 53:36in the postseason. Imagine how that could have
- 53:40affected things a little bit. Just a thought.
- 53:43Nothing. Yeah, we're not trying to play
- 53:45the high side. Game yeah, very easy to sit here
- 53:47and and play Monday morning quarterback.
- 53:49But overall it's a good series. And Carrie Carpenter, my
- 53:57goodness, if you're not familiar, you should be.
- 54:00Now, man's is different. He knew it too, 'cause I'm
- 54:05sitting there. Watching it, not even getting
- 54:06the start, not even getting the start today against, against
- 54:10Boyd or I mean, yeah, against Boyd.
- 54:13So like that's, that's a big deal.
- 54:18Well, he's, he's definitely like a a usage guy or like a match up
- 54:22guy for sure. And he he doesn't well, like not
- 54:24everybody can do that. Even if your splits are are
- 54:27strong, you may not be suited for a coming off the bench
- 54:31because some guys respond differently to that.
- 54:33He's had big moments throughout the year and this is just
- 54:36another one that he can he can tally.
- 54:38I mean, the biggest of them all thus far, obviously, but I mean,
- 54:42he knew it because I'm sitting there watching.
- 54:44I'm like, is this going to, is this going to get up enough?
- 54:47But the second I saw the bat, the bat drop, I'm like, well, if
- 54:51he knows it, then we don't need to sit here and wonder like this
- 54:54ball is gone. Maybe he lost his helmet at some
- 54:56point too. That was a little weird.
- 54:57Rounding first, I think. Yeah, but.
- 54:59Freaking out a little bit. I'm like, let's have it, let's
- 55:02have it, you know, yeah. Big moment for the Tigers.
- 55:04Big moment it's. I love there's something about
- 55:07when you can hear the opposing dugout do something big and the
- 55:12stadium is so quiet that you can hear the dugout screaming.
- 55:16That's cool man, that's super sick.
- 55:20That is, that is beautiful postseason baseball going.
- 55:23To be interesting, going back to Comerica, it's going to it's
- 55:26going to look, I think vibes are going to be high.
- 55:32Detroit's been been hungry. When's the last time they were?
- 55:35They were just legit, you know what I mean?
- 55:37Oh, they haven't had. They haven't hosted a postseason
- 55:39game there since 2013 or no, 2020 even. 2014, right, because
- 55:46that was when they matched up with the OS, I believe because
- 55:5213 was the the post season series against the Sox.
- 55:55I do remember that. But 2014 Tigers, that would have
- 56:00been, yeah, that was against the OS.
- 56:04Yeah, they're hungry. They're hungry.
- 56:08Let's do it. I love it man.
- 56:11Back to Detroit. I love that that game happened
- 56:14today 'cause it just it pushed the narrative one game along
- 56:19further that these that these game twos were like just must
- 56:25see postseason baseball. And of course, leave it to the
- 56:29leave it to the Yankees to ruin it to ruin it.
- 56:33You know, like whatever I mean, good for the Royals to to even
- 56:37the series, but it's I'm jokes aside, it was probably a little
- 56:41unfair of us to ask the Yankees and Royals to like give us a
- 56:44clean sweep of must see game twos.
- 56:47I mean, it was, it was an game, one game, but.
- 56:49They delivered game one, sure. Game one I think they said was a
- 56:54was a post season record with lead changes.
- 56:57I did see that. Yeah.
- 56:58Yeah. Crazy.
- 56:59That was a roller coaster. I was up and down from my couch
- 57:04a lot. It was a good thing I was home
- 57:08alone. Let's just cops didn't show up.
- 57:11Neighbors didn't call cops on me so all was fine.
- 57:15I've, I've known you for my entire life and I still, I'm
- 57:20still trying to navigate how to text you during these games
- 57:23because I'm like, I don't, is, is he like on the verge of, of
- 57:27smashing his TV or is he just I, I like, I have a pretty good
- 57:32idea, but I just, I've never fully know.
- 57:35And like tonight, obviously, with the Yankees dropping game
- 57:37two, I'm like, should I text them that, like, we need to hop
- 57:41on to record? Or should I just assume that
- 57:43he's going to be on like, well. I was a little grumpy when we
- 57:47got on. You could tell no.
- 57:49As expected, as as expected. But he's like this stupid light
- 57:54behind my behind my camera. It's broken.
- 57:58Got to get a new light. Yeah, the, I don't know.
- 58:05Game one was good. Game one was was, yeah, like we
- 58:10talked about just a roller coaster.
- 58:14Garrett Cole, man, I I had a feeling because I was like, he
- 58:18just hasn't been himself this year.
- 58:21And I thought I was like, maybe these last two starts of the
- 58:24regular season, it was more. Than two wasn't it like.
- 58:28It was a specifically the last two starts.
- 58:31So I think he went like 8:00 and 9:00.
- 58:32Oh, Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 58:34Yeah, in terms of it. He did good in in September
- 58:37overall, like he did well, but it was like the last two that I
- 58:40was like, let's, let's bring this in.
- 58:43And then, you know, I I said that there's certain teams that
- 58:48do well with a, you know, a first round bye in that break.
- 58:54The Yankees just don't give me that feeling of doing very well
- 58:58with it. Then it's the big guys.
- 59:01It's the big names. That's what sucks.
- 59:04Like Garrett Cole, you can kind of tell he's like a he's very in
- 59:08his head more often than not. And he seems like a routine guy
- 59:11like most starters are. And him having this many days
- 59:14off was strange. The judge thing, it just seems
- 59:18like he can't get this monkey off his back.
- 59:21You know, it's some of those narratives just aren't looking
- 59:25great. And the Yankee offense for
- 59:29pulling out game one, it was lucky, I'll call it that.
- 59:32I think they're lucky to not be down O2.
- 59:36Well, you want to talk narratives.
- 59:37I mean, the the judge not performing in the postseason
- 59:42narrative obviously has a much larger sample size.
- 59:45But on the flip side here, Bobby Witt, he's at least I think, no,
- 59:50I think it's over 10. Over 10 now.
- 59:52Yeah, it was over 9 I believe. And then I think he had one, one
- 59:57last AB there to to close out the the 9th.
- 1:00:00But yeah, little pressing that's that's that's got to change.
- 1:00:06But you wanted, I mean, we're I'd mentioned it earlier.
- 1:00:09You want to talk about somebody that could benefit from going
- 1:00:12home, changing venues. I mean he his splits and like we
- 1:00:16made jokes about early in the season, but his splits.
- 1:00:19Are off literally off the charts when it comes to him playing at
- 1:00:24home. So I I think that'll that'll
- 1:00:26certainly benefit him, but I can't say the same for judge.
- 1:00:30I don't know what's going on there.
- 1:00:31Like the guys, I, I don't get it.
- 1:00:34It, it makes no sense. And, and I I joked about it
- 1:00:37earlier in the episode, talking about one of the best offseason
- 1:00:41or offensive seasons of all time and if, and that couldn't even
- 1:00:46get his his head right or his mind right, at least what I was
- 1:00:49saying. Like there's it's the time off,
- 1:00:52man. Like it's I'm not just going to
- 1:00:55say that because obviously it's been prior post season since
- 1:00:57it's not just this one, but like it just doesn't help.
- 1:01:03It just doesn't seem quite right.
- 1:01:06And it's not like he's it's not like he's punching out on like
- 1:01:12borderline pitches. It's not like he's chasing a
- 1:01:16ton, like these balls are in the zone and he's swinging through
- 1:01:19them. He's flying on a good bit.
- 1:01:23Too. It's it's yeah, he's flying open
- 1:01:26and it's just, I don't know, like even that ball that he he
- 1:01:30beat out to the left side to get his first hit of the series
- 1:01:33tonight in Game 2, Like it's you're still rolling that over.
- 1:01:38You know what I mean? Like you you just having to find
- 1:01:41a good spot and and Michael was, you know, having to dive and lay
- 1:01:46out for it. But like, I don't know, man,
- 1:01:50that Austin Wells really needs like it.
- 1:01:55A lot of this lineup goes when he then that 4 hole is taken
- 1:01:58care of and he just I know he had a hit in game one.
- 1:02:04But like, like I said, the game one just felt very lucky.
- 1:02:08It felt like a fluky Royals performance from their bullpen,
- 1:02:12a million walks and they kind of just like let the Yankees back
- 1:02:18into it. And when you talk about like,
- 1:02:20you know what, we said it with Cleveland and and Detroit, like
- 1:02:23teams that don't beat themselves, the Royals beat
- 1:02:26themselves game one like that, You know what I mean?
- 1:02:29Like, I don't think the Yankees, they've left so many guys on
- 1:02:33base. They've lacked the big hit.
- 1:02:35And tonight there was a lot of barreled balls, like to the
- 1:02:39track line outs, the outfielders.
- 1:02:41You're like, man, that's just little lift in that game.
- 1:02:45Looks different, but the Royals handed them game one.
- 1:02:51Can I just add on that note, you're talking about balls of
- 1:02:53the track. I tell you what, I don't know
- 1:02:56how you or any other Yankee fan watches 81 home games in in that
- 1:03:00stadium. That is the most exhausting
- 1:03:03ballpark to watch a game on TV at.
- 1:03:06I'm seeing balls off the off the end of the bat.
- 1:03:11Guys are flailing open. It's like a little duck fart to
- 1:03:13right field and you got Costas over there go he got all of that
- 1:03:17one. And then it's like a fly out to
- 1:03:19the track and it's like this is every fly ball like that.
- 1:03:23That would not be good for my for my blood pressure.
- 1:03:25I know that much. Nothing about this team is good
- 1:03:28for my blood pressure. Well, I mean, that's, that's
- 1:03:31you. I, I can't speak for that, but
- 1:03:33you know, that's how you feel. That's how you feel, but.
- 1:03:36I do want to. I do want to make a comment
- 1:03:38though. I want to give Oswaldo Cabrera
- 1:03:41and John Birdie a lot of love. Dude, I forgot John Birdie was
- 1:03:46even on the team when he stepped up the.
- 1:03:47Plane a lot of time this year. A lot of holy cow.
- 1:03:51But for for Rizzo to go down Ben Rice was, it's months removed
- 1:03:58from his hot streak. And even then, he's not like
- 1:04:02he's a transferred catcher into first baseman, like he's
- 1:04:06transitioned into that position. It's not like he's, you know, a
- 1:04:08Gold Glover over there, but to see two guys that are typically
- 1:04:12playing that have come up through the system playing the
- 1:04:14left side, John Birdie a little bit more second base can play
- 1:04:18anywhere. But like both those guys to play
- 1:04:20really solid first base, picking balls, making big plays like
- 1:04:28that's that's pretty legit. And I'm going to I'm going to
- 1:04:34give Boone a little credit on those decisions and starting
- 1:04:39Verdugo and left over over Jason Dominguez, as much as like
- 1:04:45there's a lot of Yankee fans that are not thrilled about it
- 1:04:47and that before the games would probably be pretty pissed if we
- 1:04:51found that out. But Verdugo's done well.
- 1:04:56He had to go ahead RBI. He's done well.
- 1:04:59He's had big moments, he's played good left field like he's
- 1:05:03done well. So there's a couple things
- 1:05:07around that and I think the Yankees are lucky to be 11.
- 1:05:12Considering Judge has done nothing, considering Garrett
- 1:05:16Cole provided nothing positive, bullpen has looked really good.
- 1:05:20That's been a big question mark. So it's a weird series so far
- 1:05:25for them. I'm glad.
- 1:05:26Well, you're talking names. I I'm just glad for Carlos Rodon
- 1:05:30that he it seems as though he found his tongue by the end of
- 1:05:35the game because they're at the beginning in the 1st.
- 1:05:39It's weird, right? That thing was flying all over
- 1:05:41the place and I'm going I don't know.
- 1:05:43I don't know why why this guy's feeling himself so much because
- 1:05:46we all know how this is going to end.
- 1:05:48Ends up. I think it on the night he he
- 1:05:51had given up four and I'm like, I'm just glad he got he found
- 1:05:54his tongue because like I said, it was the thing was all over
- 1:05:57the place a little. And I don't know if you saw I,
- 1:06:00I, I didn't see my many, many tweets about this, but oh, oh,
- 1:06:05Salvi Perez gave gave a little bit of tongue around in second
- 1:06:08base. As weird as that sounds.
- 1:06:09He gave it right. He must have, he must have not
- 1:06:11missed that, that Rodon moment, the first, because he he gave it
- 1:06:16right back to him round in second.
- 1:06:17So he was very he was very much aware.
- 1:06:20If you go back and watch Perez round in second after his solo
- 1:06:23home run, he gives the old Rodon treatment with that, like
- 1:06:27flailing around. I was.
- 1:06:29I was all about that. Savi Perez is a Hall of Famer,
- 1:06:32one of my favorite catchers I've ever watched career wise across
- 1:06:36his career, but. I liked how we caught that from
- 1:06:38the UMP Cam by the way. Yeah, I hate that Cam.
- 1:06:42You're a you're a fan. No, no.
- 1:06:44No, I I just like that they had queued it up for that exact
- 1:06:47pitch and then you get to. See it?
- 1:06:49I hate when that happens, it drives me insane.
- 1:06:51Yeah, I mean, it does suck that like that's the footage now that
- 1:06:54we have of that home run because I, I didn't see like the main
- 1:06:57broadcast feed, but I'm like, I mean the timing of that worked
- 1:07:00out pretty well, I guess. Yeah, yeah, Tommy Pham continues
- 1:07:07to be a pain in the ass. Wherever he goes, wherever he
- 1:07:10goes, he is so impactful in the postseason.
- 1:07:14That that was big time like. So impactful and played really
- 1:07:18good defense. Like he's went back on a couple
- 1:07:21of walls and I'm like, Dang it, dude.
- 1:07:23Like you're a switch. Player.
- 1:07:25Like, yeah, both end left and right and he just, he comes up
- 1:07:29in big moments, he does big things.
- 1:07:32It's really annoying. Well, Speaking of big things, to
- 1:07:35wrap us up here, I wanted to ask you, you've got four series.
- 1:07:42They're all tied at one apiece. Which of the, because we talked
- 1:07:50about it earlier, you know, can can these teams that won Game 2
- 1:07:54take the momentum to wherever they're going, whether it's home
- 1:07:57Rd. whatever? Can they take that with them and
- 1:08:00build off of that? I want to ask you, do you see
- 1:08:04any of these series finishing at this current this this next
- 1:08:12upcoming venue, this next stop? Do you see any of these series
- 1:08:16finishing where they're at? As a reminder, you've got the
- 1:08:23Guardians going to Detroit fresh off a loss, you've got the Mets
- 1:08:30coming back home fresh off a loss, you've got the Yankees
- 1:08:36heading to Kansas City fresh off a loss, and you've got the
- 1:08:41Padres coming home after an absolute beat down of the
- 1:08:46Dodgers. I think the Padres finish it.
- 1:08:50I do too. I think they finish it and I'm
- 1:08:54not just trying to buy in the hype and like be a Dodger hater
- 1:08:58because I'm really not like the Dodgers don't bug me as much as
- 1:09:00they bug what seems to be every baseball fan.
- 1:09:04But I think we're getting that point in the in the pitching
- 1:09:09rotation for the Dodgers that there's a lot of question marks.
- 1:09:13We've seen a lot of bullpen arms already, and I think going home
- 1:09:21after a win means a lot, especially when you put up that
- 1:09:24much. With the way, yeah, it wasn't
- 1:09:26just any old win. The way they did that, that's
- 1:09:30that's huge. I think it ends in San Diego,
- 1:09:33which is what I said. I said I believe.
- 1:09:36I said Padres in four. I think he did because I had
- 1:09:39him, I had him sweeping. But I think he I think he gave
- 1:09:42him, I think he gave the daughters a little bit of
- 1:09:43credit. Yeah.
- 1:09:46I mean, honestly, I think that's the only one I can see
- 1:09:49potentially finishing at this next stop.
- 1:09:53Phillies with even with the the momentum filled win that they
- 1:10:01just came off of in Game 2, the fact that they're having to go
- 1:10:04to Queens and with the way this post season's gone for the Mets,
- 1:10:07I could very easily see that going 5.
- 1:10:10The Guardians and Tigers, I mean they, they swapped shutouts in
- 1:10:16game one and Game 2. So I can't, you can't even
- 1:10:18really say. That I don't even know.
- 1:10:21I mean, the I guess the fact that the Tigers did what they
- 1:10:23did to Class A today and and that you combine that with the
- 1:10:26fact that they're heading home, like that's certainly momentum.
- 1:10:28But I, I think the guardians are going to be the guardians will
- 1:10:33do a a fine enough job of being able to flush that.
- 1:10:36So I could see that easily going five.
- 1:10:38And then I'm in the Royals and Yankees, sort of the same thing.
- 1:10:44Like you, you split neither win for for either team was all that
- 1:10:49convincing. I mean gritty wins for sure, but
- 1:10:55I could easily see that going 5 as well.
- 1:10:58Yeah, what do we got? So tomorrow it's the NL side of
- 1:11:04things. Yeah, our next episode I think
- 1:11:07is lined up for Thursday, just here in a couple couple days.
- 1:11:10But it's going to be weird because we're only getting Game
- 1:11:143IN of because they're doing this weird thing where they they
- 1:11:21don't like having the. No, we'll be good.
- 1:11:23We'll be good. We'll have game Fours, yeah.
- 1:11:30So we have everybody playing Wednesday, NL tomorrow,
- 1:11:34everybody Wednesday, AL Thursday.
- 1:11:38That's what I'm saying, we'll only have 4 or we're we're only
- 1:11:42going to have game threes for the NL by the next time we talk.
- 1:11:47No NL plays tomorrow and Wednesday.
- 1:11:52Wednesday, everybody. Oh wait, tomorrow's today's
- 1:11:55Monday, isn't it? Yeah, there you go.
- 1:11:58I'm getting. My dates mixed up tomorrow.
- 1:12:00Game three, we got Nola going against Manaya and then we got
- 1:12:06Bueller going against Michael King.
- 1:12:10Yeah, this thing's in finished in San Diego.
- 1:12:12What are we doing? What are we talking about here?
- 1:12:14Yeah, 5:00 and 8:00 or, excuse me, 9:00 Eastern.
- 1:12:19Oh, you're going to be OK. No.
- 1:12:24That's deep. So we're getting we're getting
- 1:12:30just NL Tuesday. OK, So just NL Tuesday or yeah,
- 1:12:38NL Tuesday, everybody Wednesday and then just AL.
- 1:12:43OK, I see what you're saying. Yeah.
- 1:12:45So everybody. Yeah.
- 1:12:47OK, I got you. I was.
- 1:12:48Worried the end of a series. At least one series I think.
- 1:12:52I think one series will be able to close the book on.
- 1:12:56Thursday I was worried there's going to be some weird split
- 1:12:59with the day off or not day off whatever I don't know.
- 1:13:02I was confused. I don't hate this.
- 1:13:04I don't love, I don't love the off day.
- 1:13:08No dude, that what was it Friday this past Friday where there was
- 1:13:12no games on? I'm like what do we do?
- 1:13:14It's Friday night in October. Why?
- 1:13:16Why is there not baseball? Come on, that sucked.
- 1:13:19What a joke. That did suck, but this is
- 1:13:23lining up decently. What a yoke.
- 1:13:26Yoke. Oh, I just saw you got Jazz
- 1:13:32Chisholm talking about how the Royals got lucky.
- 1:13:34All right, Guy. Jazz.
- 1:13:37Don't. Just don't.
- 1:13:39Love some good bulletin board material.
- 1:13:41Heading back to Kansas City for the Royals, anyway.
- 1:13:46Just done anything in the whole series except a random home run.
- 1:13:50Garbage time home run in the ninth.
- 1:13:52Love that. I don't like it.
- 1:13:55Anything else? Just just a great October so
- 1:14:01far. I.
- 1:14:02Love it dude. I'm so high strung right now.
- 1:14:05It's I'm just free as a bird right now.
- 1:14:08I'm loving every. I don't.
- 1:14:10I don't. I don't care who wins.
- 1:14:12I mean, outside of the Yankees, Royals, obviously I don't I'm
- 1:14:15just kind of like, whatever, man, these these storylines are
- 1:14:18just fantastic. I'm I'm here for all of it.
- 1:14:22This has been such an awesome post season so far.
- 1:14:25I just hope that, I hope the LCS in the World Series doesn't let
- 1:14:28us down because we are tracking we're really well we're.
- 1:14:31Training. We're training in the right
- 1:14:32direction. I all.
- 1:14:33Lines. All lines on the graph are going
- 1:14:35up. I'm with you.
- 1:14:37Cool good stuff Bob Costas sucks.
- 1:14:42Don't go chasing curveballs. Bob Costas is a legend and we're
- 1:14:49not going to we're not going to tarnish his his legacy, but it's
- 1:14:53time to hang it up. Thank you.
- 1:14:55Well, let me as always take the documentaries and.
- 1:14:58And articles, Bob. He's a great storyteller.
- 1:15:02He's a great storyteller. But when you've got you've got
- 1:15:06Ron darling. I mean, he's he is building up
- 1:15:09the most mundane update as if it's the the story of the
- 1:15:15century. And then you've got Ron Darling
- 1:15:17being like he has a strand calf. That's what we're dealing with
- 1:15:23with Bob Costas. He's a legend.
- 1:15:25I'm just trying to imagine like Bob Costas reading like a
- 1:15:29bedtime story to his grandkids and they're asleep in the first
- 1:15:33sentence. Brutal, Brutal.
- 1:15:39He's a legend, and we're not going to say that he's not on
- 1:15:41this on this podcast. So we don't need people coming
- 1:15:43after us, Bob. Bob Costas has a heck of a
- 1:15:46resume, heck of a career. But this, we can't have
- 1:15:51lullabies being plugged in for some of the most electric
- 1:15:55moments of a baseball season. We just can't have it.
- 1:15:59Yeah, he's I I think it's time, Bob.
- 1:16:02Shame on TBS. Time to hang it out.
- 1:16:04Well, TBS is garbage, but this postseason is not, so enjoy the
- 1:16:09rest of the division Series. We'll talk with you guys soon.
- 1:16:11We love you all, and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 1:16:13baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
