- 0:00Speaker 1: One thing that I think is kind of interesting as
- 0:04Speaker 1: we bark on this college football playoff is I wasn't
- 0:13Speaker 1: expecting this, and I doubt I don't know how many
- 0:16Speaker 1: folks saw this in advance and started a howl about
- 0:19Speaker 1: it in advance. But Sark was asked about this, Daboshweeney
- 0:26Speaker 1: talked about it in his press conference, and apparently Rhet
- 0:28Speaker 1: Lashley went off on it as well. And that is
- 0:33Speaker 1: the portal window opening up during the playoff.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Today.
- 0:41Speaker 1: At his news conference, Lastly, the SMU coach suggested that
- 0:46Speaker 1: they eliminate the December portal window, saying it's tough that
- 0:50Speaker 1: players have to make decisions about whether the transfer or
- 0:52Speaker 1: play in the playoff. Lastly said having an open portal
- 0:56Speaker 1: window while preparing for postseason games is terrible, while also
- 1:01Speaker 1: noting the decision that Penn State's backup quarterback Bo Prebula
- 1:07Speaker 1: made the decision to enter the portal. And I heard
- 1:12Speaker 1: James Franklin, the Penn State head coach, talking about that,
- 1:15Speaker 1: saying I know this. He said Bo did not want
- 1:18Speaker 1: to leave the program, but he felt like he didn't
- 1:23Speaker 1: have a choice because if he didn't go into the portal,
- 1:26Speaker 1: his opportunity to land somewhere else would escape him, so
- 1:31Speaker 1: you can't really fault him for that.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And in fact, somebody else said the same thing.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Oh it was Jeff Traylor and UTSA at his news conference,
- 1:40Speaker 1: he said, don't fault the kids, faulty faulty adults, he said,
- 1:44Speaker 1: with this system, not just that, but he was also
- 1:46Speaker 1: referring to nil and the way it was going. But
- 1:49Speaker 1: we heard start talk about it yesterday saying maybe they
- 1:52Speaker 1: should look at an NFL model. Maybe maybe you don't
- 1:56Speaker 1: have a portal window open there and you don't know
- 2:00Speaker 1: it until the spring semester starts.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And he said he understands and I get it as well.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Why it's important for a lot of programs to have
- 2:09Speaker 1: access to an open portal window during the month of
- 2:12Speaker 1: December because of spring practice. But as starting point out,
- 2:17Speaker 1: there is a gap. You could, you know, open it
- 2:21Speaker 1: in January. But a lot of the guys feel like
- 2:23Speaker 1: they've got to get student athletes on campus enrolled by
- 2:28Speaker 1: early by mid January or something like that, never mind
- 2:31Speaker 1: that spring practice might not start until March or February
- 2:35Speaker 1: in some cases April. They got to get him enrolled
- 2:38Speaker 1: and got him and get him in class. So that's
- 2:40Speaker 1: that's a tough deal to go through.
- 2:41Speaker 3: And don't forget about the student athlete part of this,
- 2:44Speaker 3: because certain universities require you be enrolled into your classes,
- 2:47Speaker 3: have your class schedule, and a lot of that has
- 2:50Speaker 3: to be done by early January Craig. So if you wait, well,
- 2:53Speaker 3: let's just wait until the title game ends. That's January twentieth.
- 2:57Speaker 3: You're already three four weeks into your spring semester there,
- 3:00Speaker 3: so people forget that the student is still a part
- 3:03Speaker 3: of student athlete, even though we do forget about it.
- 3:05Speaker 3: And there's a reason why we have this portal right
- 3:07Speaker 3: now is so these students can enroll into their next
- 3:10Speaker 3: university and get on campus and get into class because
- 3:13Speaker 3: otherwise now you're waiting until the next fall to be
- 3:17Speaker 3: able to start taking classes. So what do you do
- 3:20Speaker 3: for the entire spring semester? You're still going to school
- 3:23Speaker 3: while you're not in the football team. And I know
- 3:25Speaker 3: Silas Bolden at Oregon State, but he was trying to
- 3:27Speaker 3: finish his degree, I think. So it's something that the
- 3:31Speaker 3: NCAA needs to figure out with the portal in these
- 3:33Speaker 3: universities as well.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, here are a couple other comments from lashly quote,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I feel so awful for our kids and kids around
- 3:42Speaker 1: the country. There's no other sport at all that has
- 3:46Speaker 1: free agency in the season. Remember Sart talked about that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: He said, also, there's free agency going on. It's sad,
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's terrible. You hear the story about their backup quarterback
- 3:54Speaker 1: saying I don't have a choice. He said, that's wrong,
- 3:57Speaker 1: that's unacceptable, that's not okay. He shouldn't have to make
- 3:59Speaker 1: that decision. He's got a situation like that. Remember, Kevin
- 4:04Speaker 1: Jennings was not SMU starting quarterback at the start of
- 4:06Speaker 1: the year. He quarterbacked them in their American Conference championship
- 4:12Speaker 1: win over Toulane last year, but it was still up
- 4:16Speaker 1: in the air whether it was going to be him
- 4:17Speaker 1: or Preston Stone at quarterback. Well Stone got hurt and
- 4:22Speaker 1: then Jennings got a stranglehold on the position and didn't
- 4:27Speaker 1: let up. He played extremely well, so Stone lost the
- 4:30Speaker 1: starting job in week three. The unique and interesting thing
- 4:35Speaker 1: about that he has chosen to stay with the Mustangs
- 4:39Speaker 1: during the playoff run. But Lastly said quote, we're working
- 4:41Speaker 1: with him, but it's still a juggling act. So the
- 4:44Speaker 1: window opened a week ago December ninth little over week
- 4:48Speaker 1: eight days ago, and it closes three days after Christmas,
- 4:53Speaker 1: although players whose teams made it to the college football
- 4:57Speaker 1: playoff do have a five day window to enter a
- 5:00Speaker 1: starting the day after their season ends. Now that's really
- 5:04Speaker 1: interesting too when you think about this. Let's say that
- 5:08Speaker 1: Texas goes all the way to the National Championship game
- 5:12Speaker 1: and then win or lose, they're playing on January twentieth.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So at that point, is there indeed a five day
- 5:20Speaker 1: window open for players like some of the defensive ends
- 5:23Speaker 1: who've talked about apparently so well, if it can work
- 5:25Speaker 1: for them, why couldn't you do it there?
- 5:28Speaker 2: I mean, do you need nineteen days with the portal?
- 5:32Speaker 1: And for those who get five days afterwards, maybe there's
- 5:38Speaker 1: that trial of where you can look at the stuff,
- 5:40Speaker 1: But schools can't make a decision on it until five
- 5:43Speaker 1: days after the final college football game is played or something.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And that's the other thing that last week said interesting quotes.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Here here's his quote.
- 5:57Speaker 1: The real easy thing is you don't have a transfer
- 5:59Speaker 1: portal in That's the real easy answer, and it solves
- 6:02Speaker 1: all the problems. Why in the world would we put
- 6:04Speaker 1: kids in a position where they've got to decide do
- 6:07Speaker 1: I transfer or play in the playoff? Do I transfer
- 6:10Speaker 1: or play in my bowl game? Scholastically, it doesn't make
- 6:13Speaker 1: sense either because your year's end in May, not in December.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So he said, college football has to take another look
- 6:21Speaker 1: at the calendar. That's exactly what sarcer was talking about
- 6:23Speaker 1: and what now Bosweeney was talking about the calendar.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And that's part of the word that I have heard.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And I'll give you you guys a little bit of
- 6:35Speaker 1: a little sneak peek.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So to speak.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Cameron does a fabulous job of producing our broadcast open
- 6:43Speaker 1: for each Texas Long Horn football game during the year.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We have already produced what the open will be for
- 6:52Speaker 1: Saturday's game, and in it you hear me talk about
- 6:55Speaker 1: us that I use the word different. And in the
- 7:00Speaker 1: opposing coach feature with Dabosweeney you hear him talk about different.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Sark yesterday said different. That is the most operative word
- 7:11Speaker 1: about this college football player. For these teams, especially the
- 7:13Speaker 1: ones that are playing this week, the ones who got
- 7:16Speaker 1: the buys, it's more like just getting ready for regular
- 7:19Speaker 1: bowl game. You're just going to have more add ons
- 7:21Speaker 1: beyond that. But you know that's the whole thing is different.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Everything is different about it, and that's just accented the
- 7:29Speaker 1: whole thing about the portal more. He said, people are
- 7:33Speaker 1: bombarding our roster, trying to pick people off of our roster,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and we're trying to focus on the playoffs.
- 7:39Speaker 2: So yeah, it's really easy.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Don't have a transfer portal in the summer, go to
- 7:42Speaker 1: the spring, and lastly said if that were to happen,
- 7:45Speaker 1: they should also consider moving more toward an NFL model,
- 7:49Speaker 1: which we heard from Sark yesterday when it comes to
- 7:52Speaker 1: spring practices, which would begin after the portal closes, like
- 7:56Speaker 1: OTAs in the NFL. So now we're hearing more and
- 7:58Speaker 1: more talk about that, so it'd be interesting to see
- 8:00Speaker 1: if that's the way we go with that.
- 8:03Speaker 2: He said.
- 8:03Speaker 1: We coaches have been saying this for the last three
- 8:06Speaker 1: or four years with all these changes, and what happens
- 8:08Speaker 1: is we just make all these random changes because we
- 8:10Speaker 1: don't want to get sued or we don't want to
- 8:12Speaker 1: do this, We don't want to do that. We don't
- 8:15Speaker 1: think about the long term effects that has on the
- 8:17Speaker 1: young people that we're supposed to be serving. Okay, I
- 8:21Speaker 1: agree with them on all that. I think we should
- 8:23Speaker 1: also be realistic to know and understand and realize that
- 8:29Speaker 1: with change is going to come some unintended consequences. The
- 8:35Speaker 1: change being the twelve teams in the playoff. Everybody likes it,
- 8:41Speaker 1: it's pretty cool, but there were going to be some
- 8:44Speaker 1: slings and arrows that came out of it, and those
- 8:47Speaker 1: are things that will have to be adjusted, and I
- 8:48Speaker 1: think they probably will be adjusted. But you know, for now,
- 8:52Speaker 1: teams like Texas and Clemson and SMU and Penn State
- 8:56Speaker 1: are seeing the effects of this. All right, We'll be
- 9:00Speaker 1: back to wrap up today's edition of the program, continuing
- 9:04Speaker 1: here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and
- 9:06Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app.
