- 0:10Speaker 1: Acts 13.9 Dear Lord, as I speak, I thank you
- 0:17Speaker 1: that you are transforming me from a lamb into a lion.
- 0:23Speaker 1: In the same way that you promoted Paul with a
- 0:26Speaker 1: name change, today I receive my new name. Because of Jesus' sacrifice,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I was once called fearful, but now I'm called courageous.
- 0:40Speaker 1: When I was once called doubtful, I am now called faithful.

- 1:04Speaker 1: am with an even greater influence and understanding. I declare
- 1:10Speaker 1: that any and all old names that have ever limited
- 1:14Speaker 1: my life are gone and done away with. Behold, I
- 1:20Speaker 1: stand as a new creation, ready to proclaim the works
- 1:26Speaker 1: of Jesus. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thanks for making prayer

- 1:54Speaker 2: Psalm to Paul In our last story, we witnessed the
- 1:58Speaker 2: tragic yet noble death of James. He would be the
- 2:02Speaker 2: first apostle to be martyred, and he would not be
- 2:05Speaker 2: the last. As persecution of the church increased, so did
- 2:09Speaker 2: the risk of imprisonment. Yet death was no match for Jesus,
- 2:14Speaker 2: nor is it a threat to those who believe in him.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So Peter pressed onward. Now we focus on the ministry
- 2:23Speaker 2: of Saul. who learns how to protect the sheep of
- 2:26Speaker 2: God with his words, and thus transitions into the ministry
- 2:30Speaker 2: of apostleship, inspired by the book of Acts.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I'm so glad you've joined us on the Bible in
- 2:39Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,

- 3:02Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 3:04Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 3:07Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 3:10Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing

- 3:26Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. In our last episode, we heard how
- 3:33Speaker 3: Herod put James to death and imprisoned Peter. It seemed
- 3:37Speaker 3: that the enemy had gained an upper hand. But the
- 3:40Speaker 3: church gathered in fervent prayer, and God delivered Peter from
- 3:44Speaker 3: his chains and dealt with Herod also, striking him down
- 3:47Speaker 3: for seeking glory over God. The church continued to grow
- 3:51Speaker 3: and multiply, powered by the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:55Speaker 3: These prayerful, faithful Christians shared courageously the good news of
- 4:00Speaker 3: Jesus Christ to the world. And today we'll hear how
- 4:03Speaker 3: Saul grows into his own ministry and stands firm in
- 4:06Speaker 3: the truth. Saul, who was dramatically and dynamically converted on
- 4:11Speaker 3: the road to Damascus, is about to defend the flock
- 4:14Speaker 3: against false teachers who try to lead them astray. So
- 4:17Speaker 3: let's listen now to God's holy word.
- 4:22Speaker 2: The church in Antioch continued to strengthen day by day
- 4:26Speaker 2: through the teaching and leading of Barnabas and Saul. As
- 4:30Speaker 2: the leaders of the church prayed with one another, the
- 4:33Speaker 2: Holy Spirit tugged on their hearts to depart from Antioch
- 4:36Speaker 2: towards Cyprus. Barnabas and Saul listened and set sail for
- 4:41Speaker 2: the island of Cyprus. They were filled with hope that
- 4:45Speaker 2: the Lord would move, but there was no telling what
- 4:48Speaker 2: dangers dwelled in the middle of the island. Barnabas and
- 4:52Speaker 2: Saul stepped foot onto the shores of Cyprus. The peaceful
- 4:56Speaker 2: port country was filled with sailors, fishermen, and synagogues. However,
- 5:02Speaker 2: underneath the quaint exterior was a lingering evil, a presence
- 5:07Speaker 2: that slowly poisoned the people without knowledge. Saul sensed it
- 5:12Speaker 2: and kept alert as he met the people of Cyprus.
- 5:15Speaker 2: The two men ventured to Paphos, which was at the
- 5:18Speaker 2: end of the island. Saul sensed a shift in the
- 5:21Speaker 2: air as they walked. Something was not right. Something was unsettling.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Emerging from a home nestled on the shores of Paphos
- 5:30Speaker 2: was a man by the name of Bar-Jesus. He emerged
- 5:33Speaker 2: from his home with staff in hand, glaring at the
- 5:36Speaker 2: two travelers. The second Saul's eyes met his, he knew
- 5:40Speaker 2: that this man was the source.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Of the evil.
- 5:43Speaker 2: This man had a mind held by the enemy. Bar-Jesus
- 5:47Speaker 2: was a man of dark arts. He dabbled in things
- 5:50Speaker 2: better left alone and sacrificed to them for power. Not
- 5:55Speaker 2: only this, but he was also a man of great
- 5:57Speaker 2: influence and intelligence. It made him dangerous. Saul and Barnabas
- 6:03Speaker 2: went to preach in the city, but Bar-Jesus would whisper
- 6:06Speaker 2: lies into their ears and spin tales about them. Saul,
- 6:10Speaker 2: filled with the Spirit of God, confronted him.' You are
- 6:14Speaker 2: a son of the enemy himself,' Saul said with commanding force.
- 6:18Speaker 2: He took a step forward, causing Bar-Jesus to step back.
- 6:23Speaker 2: You are an enemy of righteousness and filled with corruption.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Look me in the eyes and hear what I am saying.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Stop muddying the pure waters of God. Saul paused to
- 6:34Speaker 2: look at Bar-Jesus. There was no sign of remorse in
- 6:37Speaker 2: his eyes. Saul pointed to him and said, The Lord's
- 6:41Speaker 2: hand is upon you. For a time your eyes will
- 6:44Speaker 2: be dimmed to the light of the sun. Blindness will
- 6:47Speaker 2: overtake you as it once did to me. Every person
- 6:51Speaker 2: watching saw Bar-Jesus' eyes fade into darkness. As if he
- 6:55Speaker 2: was caught in a dark cloud, Bar-Jesus stumbled blindly onto
- 6:59Speaker 2: the floor. This was the moment Saul had truly felt
- 7:03Speaker 2: the Spirit of God move through him. Bar-Jesus was leading
- 7:07Speaker 2: the sheep of God astray, and as Saul spoke, he
- 7:10Speaker 2: felt the shepherding heart of God. He spoke in boldness
- 7:14Speaker 2: and stepped forward in authority. This was the moment Saul
- 7:18Speaker 2: of Tarsus ceased to exist. Now there was only Paul
- 7:22Speaker 2: the Apostle. So Paul and Barnabas ventured forth to preach
- 7:27Speaker 2: in Pamphylia. They sat in the synagogues and proclaimed the
- 7:31Speaker 2: word of the Lord. Paul was able to take what
- 7:33Speaker 2: he had learned as a child and weave the story
- 7:36Speaker 2: of Israel and the story of Jesus together into a
- 7:39Speaker 2: beautiful tapestry. At first they preached to the Jews, and
- 7:44Speaker 2: then droves of Jews and Gentiles alike gathered together to
- 7:48Speaker 2: hear Paul speak. The Jews became jealous that the Gentiles
- 7:52Speaker 2: were allowed to enter into Paul's presence and hear his teaching.
- 7:56Speaker 2: They spat and reviled them, but Paul would not stand
- 7:59Speaker 2: for it. The word of God was given to you first,
- 8:02Speaker 2: yet you treat it like trash and toss it aside.
- 8:06Speaker 2: So behold, we preach to those who have been far off,
- 8:10Speaker 2: We preach to those who would listen. We preach to
- 8:13Speaker 2: those who have not grown complacent in their hearing of truth.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So the Gentiles rejoiced that they were able to enter
- 8:20Speaker 2: into God's presence. They looked to Jesus and believed. Yet
- 8:25Speaker 2: some of the Antioch Jews were not without their bitterness.
- 8:28Speaker 2: They plotted against the disciples and sought to destroy them
- 8:32Speaker 2: as they once did Jesus.
- 8:39Speaker 3: In God's Word today, we read that Barnabas and Saul
- 8:42Speaker 3: are ministering in Antioch. Under their guidance, the church there
- 8:46Speaker 3: had grown in numbers and in strength, with other leaders
- 8:49Speaker 3: emerging to guide the body of Christ in that city.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And so, as Saul and Barnabas prayed and fasted, the
- 8:56Speaker 3: Holy Spirit spoke to them, saying they were to leave,
- 8:59Speaker 3: there was work to be done in other places, brand
- 9:01Speaker 3: new places. So the Christians in Antioch laid hands on
- 9:05Speaker 3: them and sent them off to pursue God's calling. With
- 9:09Speaker 3: them was John Mark, a young believer from Jerusalem. They
- 9:12Speaker 3: set sail and arrived on the island of Cyprus, where
- 9:15Speaker 3: they began proclaiming the gospel in the synagogues. These missionaries
- 9:20Speaker 3: traveled across the island, telling all who would listen about Jesus,
- 9:23Speaker 3: the Son of God, who had come, lived, and died,
- 9:26Speaker 3: rose again, in order that they might know eternal life.
- 9:30Speaker 3: When they reached the far end of the island, they
- 9:33Speaker 3: encountered a man named Bar-Jesus. He was called a magician.
- 9:37Speaker 3: and was a false prophet who led many astray with
- 9:39Speaker 3: his considerable influence. Persecution was not the only threat to
- 9:44Speaker 3: the church in the work of spreading the good news.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Satan does not employ one single tactic to lead people
- 9:50Speaker 3: away from God and his truth. This false prophet worked
- 9:54Speaker 3: to undermine Saul and Barnabas' preaching and turn people away
- 9:57Speaker 3: from the one true God. Saul's saw the danger of
- 10:00Speaker 3: this false teacher Bar-Jesus, and so he says in Acts
- 10:04Speaker 3: 13 verses 10-11, You son of the devil, you enemy
- 10:08Speaker 3: of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will
- 10:12Speaker 3: you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?
- 10:16Speaker 3: And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you,
- 10:18Speaker 3: and you will be blind and unable to see the
- 10:21Speaker 3: Son for a time. As Paul spoke these words to Bar-Jesus,
- 10:25Speaker 3: the man became blind, dependent upon others to lead him around.
- 10:29Speaker 3: This man, whose name literally meant Son of Jesus, was
- 10:33Speaker 3: anything but the Son of Jesus. He was the son
- 10:36Speaker 3: of the enemy, and Saul was not going to allow
- 10:39Speaker 3: him to lead others away from the Lord. Here we
- 10:42Speaker 3: see the zeal of Saul, now Paul the missionary. Paul
- 10:47Speaker 3: was defending the truth with passion and conviction, and this
- 10:50Speaker 3: was his calling, his high calling as a missionary of
- 10:53Speaker 3: the good news of Jesus. From this point on into
- 10:56Speaker 3: the scriptures, Saul is referred to as Paul. This was
- 11:00Speaker 3: not a new name, rather it was his Roman name,
- 11:03Speaker 3: whereas Saul was his Jewish name. It is symbolic as
- 11:06Speaker 3: Paul has now become a minister not only to the
- 11:09Speaker 3: Jews and but to the Romans, to the Gentiles everywhere.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And so Paul and Barnabas continued to travel around the region,
- 11:16Speaker 3: speaking not only in synagogues, but to the Jews in
- 11:19Speaker 3: the town squares, to Gentiles who came to hear the
- 11:22Speaker 3: word of God. This was God's plan all along, that
- 11:26Speaker 3: everyone would hear the good news of Jesus Christ and
- 11:29Speaker 3: experience his grace. Many Jewish people, however, were angry and
- 11:33Speaker 3: still felt that salvation was not for the Gentiles. But
- 11:37Speaker 3: Paul stood against this false teaching, rebuking those who tried
- 11:40Speaker 3: to turn the Gentiles away from God's grace and mercy.
- 11:45Speaker 3: The Gentiles rejoiced and received the gospel gladly, but the
- 11:48Speaker 3: Jews in Antioch grew angrier and stirred up persecution against
- 11:52Speaker 3: Paul and Barnabas, who now had to run to a
- 11:55Speaker 3: new place, Iconium. The gospel was still on the move,
- 11:59Speaker 3: and those whom God was working through were filled with
- 12:02Speaker 3: the joy of the Holy Spirit, as they courageously took
- 12:05Speaker 3: the message of Christ to as many people as they could.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Paul and Barnabas' ministry would bear great fruit, but it
- 12:12Speaker 3: would not be without challenges. And the next time, we'll
- 12:15Speaker 3: hear as Paul experiences the pain of persecution firsthand. Let's pray. God,
- 12:22Speaker 3: we thank you for your word. Thank you for reminding
- 12:25Speaker 3: us to stand firm on the truth and to be
- 12:27Speaker 3: watchful of false teachers who would undermine the message of
- 12:31Speaker 3: Jesus and the gospel. Give us the boldness to take
- 12:34Speaker 3: the good news not only to the nations but to
- 12:37Speaker 3: our neighbors as we share the love of Christ and
- 12:40Speaker 3: His power to save. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
