- 1:10Speaker 1: We're at Hollover Inland in Miami, Florida with Captain Baby
- 1:15Speaker 1: Raymond and go hard fishing after a day on the
- 1:19Speaker 1: water and we fought, man, but we scratched out some
- 1:23Speaker 1: nice pictures and some good fish.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Oh yeah, man, people are gonna hear the report and
- 1:28Speaker 2: I'll say, you know, we caught two fish up to
- 1:32Speaker 2: two feet long, and everyone will just be knocked off
- 1:35Speaker 2: their chair man.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Well, look, you you told me this the people, when
- 1:40Speaker 1: the keys told me this. It's been tough for a while.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It's been a little bit tough, but hey, I told
- 1:46Speaker 1: you you can't catch a fish.
- 1:47Speaker 7: If your line's not in the water.
- 1:49Speaker 8: That's the truth.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We tried our butts off out there, you know, with
- 1:52Speaker 2: the kite up and the flatlines out for a sale
- 1:54Speaker 2: fish or a king or a wahoo, are dolphin or tuna.
- 1:57Speaker 7: Got a couple of bytes, yeah, a couple of.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Bites, but no hits that actually landed in the boat.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And we ended up in the inlet at the end
- 2:04Speaker 2: of the day and saved it with a big snook
- 2:06Speaker 2: from you and a beautiful little black grouper. The snook
- 2:09Speaker 2: was probably thirty two inches long, so nice. Yeah, he
- 2:12Speaker 2: had a couple beautiful jumps right with the rich Carlton
- 2:15Speaker 2: in the background.
- 2:17Speaker 7: Absolutely, and we lost a couple too.
- 2:19Speaker 8: Yeah, that's part of the game.
- 2:21Speaker 2: You can't catch them all, you know, you try to
- 2:22Speaker 2: catch them all and sort them out at the end.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I gotta I want to say that Abe donated a
- 2:28Speaker 1: trip to the Billfish Foundation that we were able to
- 2:32Speaker 1: bid on, because when I saw his name on the list,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I said, hey, I.
- 2:35Speaker 7: Know that guy.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I fished with that guy, So thank you for doing that.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I know you do that quite often.
- 2:41Speaker 8: It means a lot to me.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You know, those people over there do a ton of
- 2:44Speaker 2: research for us and let us know how fast they
- 2:46Speaker 2: grew and where those billfish went. And yeah, we have
- 2:49Speaker 2: them recaptured at a rate of probably two to three percent.
- 2:52Speaker 7: Wow, it's pretty good.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we think it's probably the highest among most of
- 2:56Speaker 2: the boats that have done it because we always leave
- 2:58Speaker 2: them in the water, get that tag in and safely
- 3:01Speaker 2: don't beat the fish up. And that's important to the
- 3:03Speaker 2: future and it helps us catch more fish if we
- 3:06Speaker 2: know where they went.
- 3:07Speaker 9: How's the fishery around here right now?
- 3:08Speaker 7: How would you describe it?
- 3:10Speaker 2: I would say overall, the pelagic migratory species are most
- 3:15Speaker 2: consistent in the spring, but in other times of the
- 3:17Speaker 2: year they're lacking. As far as a bottom fishery here,
- 3:22Speaker 2: the continental shelf is so short and narrow that the
- 3:25Speaker 2: pressure is just too immense to support any kind of
- 3:28Speaker 2: really quality bottom fish. So when I need nice bottom fish,
- 3:32Speaker 2: I really have to reach way.
- 3:33Speaker 8: Up the sleeves to pull out those nice.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Groupers and snappers just because it's hit so hard. Our
- 3:40Speaker 2: brief here is only two and a half miles wide.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So there's a lot of people in this city, four
- 3:45Speaker 2: million of them in Greater Miami, and.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I think three million of them were out in boats
- 3:49Speaker 1: yesterday on a Sunday and.
- 3:50Speaker 8: There was a lot of fiberglass out there. You could
- 3:53Speaker 8: barely get through it. There's so many.
- 3:55Speaker 2: With that kind of pressure though, you got to pull
- 3:57Speaker 2: out all the stops to try to catch a bottom fish.
- 3:59Speaker 2: So I think overall the bottom fishing is hurting. The
- 4:02Speaker 2: logic migratory species are always going to be consistent when
- 4:05Speaker 2: they need to come down here and lay their eggs.
- 4:07Speaker 7: That's our and we were talking.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The last couple of years, a lot of the cell
- 4:12Speaker 1: fish who would normally come even this early when the
- 4:14Speaker 1: water cools, have been staying a little farther north.
- 4:18Speaker 8: Yeah, that's been tough.
- 4:19Speaker 2: They've been stopping about Jupiter, which is about seventy miles
- 4:21Speaker 2: north of here in Miami, and they're staying there for
- 4:24Speaker 2: whatever reason. We tried to blame it on the winter's
- 4:27Speaker 2: the last four or five years, but now we had
- 4:29Speaker 2: plenty of winter this year and they're still not down here.
- 4:31Speaker 7: So who knows.
- 4:33Speaker 2: You gotta wonder whether it's the bait or the water
- 4:36Speaker 2: temperature for the bait, but we'll figure it out someday.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Well, they follow the bait, I mean, fish are gonna
- 4:41Speaker 1: follow bait period.
- 4:42Speaker 8: Right absolutely.
- 4:43Speaker 2: And there's a plethora of bait up there, right down
- 4:45Speaker 2: from Palm Beach to Jupiter up there and north that
- 4:48Speaker 2: those fish are probably just gorging on and they see
- 4:51Speaker 2: no reason to come any further south.
- 4:52Speaker 8: I would suppose.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Now we had stopped and tried to catch some ballet
- 4:56Speaker 1: who this morning, and we know they're around, but not
- 5:00Speaker 1: We didn't see any spray showers.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Today, No, no showers, Not much activity from frigatebirds picking
- 5:05Speaker 2: off value, or I didn't see one flying fish.
- 5:08Speaker 8: Yep, I didn't see any baby benitas. And those three
- 5:11Speaker 8: groups would be the mainstay of.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Offshore food sources for salefish. So it's alarming.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Well, it's just they're just not here yet, or I
- 5:20Speaker 1: know they've been here and have moved out with weather changes.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I know you guys have had unbelievable number of weather changes.
- 5:27Speaker 1: The wind's been blown from every direction every other day.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Right correct, And when you get that pressure barometrically changing
- 5:34Speaker 2: constantly like that, from cold front to cold front to
- 5:38Speaker 2: cold front, it's just too much of a swing, and
- 5:40Speaker 2: a lot of times the fish can't get acclimated to it.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But if you get an onshore wind like we have
- 5:44Speaker 2: now for three or four or five days, sometimes it'll
- 5:47Speaker 2: turn the fish.
- 5:47Speaker 8: On a lot more.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I told you at two twenty tomorrow afternoon, you need
- 5:51Speaker 1: to be out on the water, so that's when the
- 5:53Speaker 1: howards are leaving.
- 5:53Speaker 7: The say always a.
- 5:55Speaker 8: Day late and a dollar short man telling.
- 5:57Speaker 7: You it was it's a beautiful. The weather has just
- 6:00Speaker 7: been spectacular.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm not sure I've ever been down here without humidity.
- 6:04Speaker 7: It's just been amazing.
- 6:06Speaker 8: For us. It really is paradise this time of year.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Is no mosquitoes, gorgeous weather, beautiful blue ocean out there,
- 6:13Speaker 2: or more could you want out of life besides a
- 6:15Speaker 2: few more fish.
- 6:15Speaker 9: Well, and you have that too. We have just had
- 6:19Speaker 9: bitten the last few days.
- 6:21Speaker 8: Oh, they'll be back, Bill exactly. They always come back.
- 6:24Speaker 2: They've got to come right by here through the Straits
- 6:26Speaker 2: of Florida, but between Florida and the Bahamas Bank, the
- 6:29Speaker 2: it's their main highway, So they'll be back down.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And April may probably pretty heavy through here.
- 6:38Speaker 8: From the latter half of April through the first.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Half of June is usually lights out with big black
- 6:45Speaker 2: fintunas and salefish and kingfish and dolphin groupers on the recks.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And it's usually very very good fishing in the springtime
- 6:53Speaker 2: consistently for us, because the fish have to come down
- 6:56Speaker 2: here to spawn.
- 6:57Speaker 1: By the way, you told me you caught a thirty
- 6:59Speaker 1: three pound black fintuna.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, last year on a light spinning rod, twenty pound outfit,
- 7:05Speaker 2: and a guy probably fought it for a half an
- 7:07Speaker 2: hour on that twenty pound spinner.
- 7:09Speaker 9: That is a big black fintuna.
- 7:11Speaker 8: It was a beautiful black fintuna.
- 7:12Speaker 2: He ate a live herring drifted out here and two
- 7:15Speaker 2: hundred feet right off a haul over inlet, and he
- 7:17Speaker 2: spanked the guy. Man, a guy was beat after he
- 7:19Speaker 2: could barely lift up the run.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's why I told you that I want
- 7:23Speaker 1: to catch any amberjacks today. We could have gone to
- 7:25Speaker 1: the rex probably and had a few more bites exactly,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and we look, we knew what it is, but we
- 7:32Speaker 1: wanted to do that, and then it was a great day.
- 7:35Speaker 7: They're just that's just how it goes.
- 7:38Speaker 8: Well, the bigger they are, the harder you fall.
- 7:40Speaker 2: But we came back to the inlet and saved it
- 7:42Speaker 2: with a beautiful snook which is a world class game fish,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and a real nice little grouper.
- 7:47Speaker 7: So we got some jumps too.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah, beautiful jumps, nice golden color in the sunlight.
- 7:53Speaker 8: You know. Fish like that makes the whole day worthwhile.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Really, Oh no, there's no doubt about that. But even
- 7:58Speaker 1: if there wasn't, I mean again, you have weather like
- 8:02Speaker 1: this and the water. By the way, how far off
- 8:07Speaker 1: the beach was the current.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Today, Well, the mainstay, the hardest current today was two
- 8:13Speaker 2: and a half miles off shore. There was two and
- 8:16Speaker 2: a half not to current, which is about three miles
- 8:17Speaker 2: an hour.
- 8:18Speaker 9: Which is really really what you want.
- 8:21Speaker 2: It's really conducive conditions for catching a sailfish. With that
- 8:25Speaker 2: nice hard north current, cobalt blue water and a nice
- 8:28Speaker 2: southeast wind, it's perfect conditions. Plus the sailfish are usually
- 8:33Speaker 2: swimming south, migrating that way in the wintertime, and with
- 8:36Speaker 2: a southeast wind down here, the kite baits are on
- 8:40Speaker 2: the side where they're facing the fish first, just like
- 8:44Speaker 2: fishing trout in the stream. So the way the sailfish
- 8:47Speaker 2: are laying, we're pointed right at the kite baits all day.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Even if the sailfish were just sitting in the current,
- 8:51Speaker 2: our baits would see them first.
- 8:54Speaker 7: And we've kite fish. I've kite fished with you and
- 8:57Speaker 7: Bouncer for so many years.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Tell our listeners what the benefits are to fishing with
- 9:02Speaker 1: the kite and how you're dropping these baits down to
- 9:05Speaker 1: the fish.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Fishing with the kite is fantastic because you can keep
- 9:09Speaker 2: the baits in their own quadrants where they can't possibly
- 9:12Speaker 2: get tangled with the other baits. For one thing, Secondly,
- 9:16Speaker 2: it's visually stunning to see a fish come up a.
- 9:19Speaker 7: Sail right on the surface.
- 9:20Speaker 8: Oh, they're splashing right on the surface.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And the biggest benefit is that all of your terminal
- 9:25Speaker 2: tackle is out of the waters, even the hook sometimes
- 9:28Speaker 2: so just a belly and three quarters of the bottom
- 9:30Speaker 2: half of the fish is splashing on the surface. And
- 9:33Speaker 2: there's no way that even a larger eyed fish like
- 9:36Speaker 2: tunas could see that you had a hook in that bait.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And that's really advantageous to it. You bridle the bait,
- 9:43Speaker 2: absolutely bridle it, and that gives you better hook exposure
- 9:47Speaker 2: when you bridle it, so the hook's not through the
- 9:49Speaker 2: meat of the fish.
- 9:50Speaker 8: And then on top of that.
- 9:52Speaker 2: If you get seaweed, or if your bait gets chopped
- 9:55Speaker 2: in half or he dies or a man of war
- 9:57Speaker 2: tentacle gets on him you like we did today, correct,
- 10:00Speaker 2: like it happened multiple times. You can see when that happens,
- 10:03Speaker 2: as opposed to like a flat line where you would
- 10:06Speaker 2: have no idea that that bait was dead. You might
- 10:07Speaker 2: be out there for an hour with that bait and
- 10:09Speaker 2: have no idea.
- 10:11Speaker 1: What's the difference in your mind between fishing live bait
- 10:14Speaker 1: and dead bait for these pelagic species.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Oh, man, night and day, it's night and day. There's
- 10:21Speaker 2: no doubt in my mind that you will catch sailfish
- 10:24Speaker 2: at least three or four to one on live bait
- 10:28Speaker 2: that you would catch trolling out here off Miami at least,
- 10:31Speaker 2: and for most of the other species it's probably two
- 10:34Speaker 2: or three to one with the exceptional wahoo.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Now having said that, sometime they're very finicky on the
- 10:40Speaker 1: kind of bait they'll eat, aren't they.
- 10:42Speaker 8: Absolutely?
- 10:43Speaker 2: You know, usually when there's a lot of flying fish
- 10:45Speaker 2: out here, the fish are keyed in to a smaller
- 10:49Speaker 2: bait like a pilchered or a small herring, And when
- 10:52Speaker 2: there's a lot of baby benitas out here on the reef,
- 10:55Speaker 2: then you want to fish a bigger.
- 10:57Speaker 8: Bait like a goggley.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Typically that would help you to match the hatch out there,
- 11:02Speaker 2: just like you would in a stream.
- 11:03Speaker 1: There are times as well, and sometimes as time of year,
- 11:07Speaker 1: that all de takes ballet who because they're so keyed
- 11:09Speaker 1: in on the on the ballet who and the balls
- 11:10Speaker 1: of ballet.
- 11:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Sometimes there's spraying values like crazy, and there's frigatebirds and
- 11:14Speaker 2: pelicans diving, and the salefish are in there showering them
- 11:17Speaker 2: with their fins out of the water. And if you
- 11:19Speaker 2: have some nice live value, you can actually run right
- 11:22Speaker 2: up to them and sit fish them. Cast that valley
- 11:24Speaker 2: who right on the nose of a sailfish and they'll
- 11:27Speaker 2: strike it beautifully. I'm twenty to fifty feet of water
- 11:30Speaker 2: sometimes and you watch the whole show unfold.
- 11:33Speaker 8: It's really impressive.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So you have seen these billfishing and as little as
- 11:37Speaker 1: twenty feet of water.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, just last week I had a nice sailfish ball
- 11:41Speaker 2: in a school of cigar menos in twenty five feet
- 11:43Speaker 2: of water.
- 11:44Speaker 8: Wow.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I lost them for a moment and I look back
- 11:46Speaker 2: and there's a huge value shower and I ran up
- 11:48Speaker 2: to that and the salefish was in a valley who's
- 11:50Speaker 2: eating them? He was lit up, you know, just fluorescent
- 11:54Speaker 2: purple beautiful.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Tell our listeners what that means when you say the
- 11:57Speaker 1: fish is lit up, because a lot of these logic
- 12:00Speaker 1: species do that.
- 12:01Speaker 2: The pigmentation in the skin of a migratory pelagic fish
- 12:06Speaker 2: lights up when they're excited, chasing bait, scared, and it
- 12:10Speaker 2: just turns the most beautiful purple violet color you ever seen.
- 12:14Speaker 2: It's hard to describe, but it's just a glowing purple
- 12:17Speaker 2: color that these fish turn and as soon as you
- 12:20Speaker 2: gaff the fish and put them in the boat, it's
- 12:21Speaker 2: such a shame because ten minutes later, all that color
- 12:25Speaker 2: fades from them and they're just a dull shade of
- 12:27Speaker 2: whatever they were.
- 12:28Speaker 7: Well, dorado, we're speaking. I know you're not gaffing sailfish.
- 12:31Speaker 7: So we need to throw that in.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Absolutely need to mention that we let all the sailfish
- 12:37Speaker 2: go with a billfish foundation tagging them.
- 12:39Speaker 8: And when you gaff a wahoo or a dorado or
- 12:42Speaker 8: a tuna.
- 12:42Speaker 9: They just turn immediately when you bring them in the boat.
- 12:44Speaker 2: They just fade to a dull shade of whatever they
- 12:47Speaker 2: were as opposed to before. But the sailfish will stay
- 12:51Speaker 2: that shade sometimes even after you bill them and you're
- 12:53Speaker 2: holding them in the water reviving them, and sometimes they'll
- 12:56Speaker 2: even turn more purple or the lines in them, you know,
- 13:00Speaker 2: the vertical lines in them will light up even harder
- 13:02Speaker 2: because they're stressed. When you grab them, they get a
- 13:04Speaker 2: little bit frightened and the pigmentation changes to that purple
- 13:07Speaker 2: or blue.
- 13:07Speaker 8: It's beautiful.
- 13:09Speaker 1: If I gave you one day here in one species,
- 13:11Speaker 1: what would you be targeting personally?
- 13:14Speaker 7: Tarpin?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I would target tarpin because you can fish them
- 13:18Speaker 2: so many different ways. You can fish them, unplug, fly,
- 13:22Speaker 2: live bait, you control mullet, fish, shrimp, night.
- 13:26Speaker 7: Day, and they're here year round.
- 13:28Speaker 2: They're here year round, and they're so beautiful when they
- 13:31Speaker 2: jump and shake their gills their armor plated, and just say,
- 13:35Speaker 2: we had.
- 13:35Speaker 1: That with you in June, man right at the boat.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I've still got that video.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Just such a gorgeous sight to see, you know, a
- 13:41Speaker 2: five six foot hundred pound tarp and shaking those beautiful
- 13:44Speaker 2: gill rakers in the sunlight of Miami.
- 13:46Speaker 7: And you can hear them.
- 13:48Speaker 8: You can hear them clacking, Yeah, you can't.
- 13:50Speaker 9: You can hear them.
- 13:52Speaker 1: How many people that you're dealing with right now and
- 13:56Speaker 1: you just began your business in June, I think, right, well,
- 14:00Speaker 1: well during the COVID unfortunately, but been going strong since June.
- 14:04Speaker 7: I really want to target tarpin.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I would say probably half of the people that I
- 14:11Speaker 2: mentioned it to would like to try it, but probably
- 14:14Speaker 2: only ten percent asked me on the phone for tarpan,
- 14:17Speaker 2: which is surprising to Okay.
- 14:19Speaker 1: It may it may have to do with where they're from,
- 14:21Speaker 1: you know, with their unfamiliarity. Actually, because everyone knows about
- 14:25Speaker 1: bill fish obviously.
- 14:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I would say places in the world like Boca Grand
- 14:29Speaker 2: Pass are famous for tarpan and people have no idea
- 14:32Speaker 2: that we probably have a better fishery than Boca Grand
- 14:35Speaker 2: Pass because you're not fishing in wall to wall boats.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You're fishing by yourself. There's a lot less pressure, yep.
- 14:42Speaker 2: And you know it's a little micro climate for tarpin right.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Here, Okay, So I know folks can follow you on
- 14:47Speaker 1: social media right Instagram, Facebook.
- 14:50Speaker 8: Yeah, Instagram would be great.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It's a b I E R E Y M O
- 14:53Speaker 2: N D at Aby Raymond on Instagram and Facebook.
- 14:57Speaker 8: I'm the same, just Aby Raymond.
- 14:59Speaker 7: And go hard fish.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Gohardfishing dot Com is my site and you can get
- 15:03Speaker 2: all my stuff on area.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Okay, and you do inshore. I need to mention that
- 15:08Speaker 1: one of the things we've talked for years about. But
- 15:11Speaker 1: this ocean keeps calling me away. But I want to
- 15:14Speaker 1: come down and fish with you in these channels for
- 15:16Speaker 1: peacock bass.
- 15:18Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I fish into urban canals here, the water management canals,
- 15:21Speaker 2: and they're connected to lakes, and we throw for these
- 15:24Speaker 2: peacock bass in there with artificials and we fish live
- 15:27Speaker 2: bait for tarpin and snook and clown knifefish. And the
- 15:30Speaker 2: clown knifefish are from Sri Lanka and Thailand. They're unbelievable giant,
- 15:34Speaker 2: oversized aquarium fish that swims backwards when you go to
- 15:37Speaker 2: netam and they jump like tarpin. They fight just like
- 15:40Speaker 2: a little mini tarp and they grow to about eleven
- 15:42Speaker 2: twelve pounds.
- 15:43Speaker 10: Wow.
- 15:43Speaker 2: The peacock bass are unbelievably aggressive. They strike like a
- 15:46Speaker 2: saltwater fish wood and they'll dog you like a grouper
- 15:50Speaker 2: would when you're fighting them. So it's a heck of
- 15:52Speaker 2: a good time back in there, and it's bizarre to
- 15:54Speaker 2: see a different side of Miami. And you're doing that
- 15:57Speaker 2: with a skiff, seventeen foot skiff back there and a
- 16:00Speaker 2: big oversized troller motor to scoot around in the lakes
- 16:03Speaker 2: and the canals, and it's just a strange place. Sometimes
- 16:06Speaker 2: you're fishing under a bridge next to a homeless man
- 16:09Speaker 2: and catching a five pound peacock bass on a fly rod.
- 16:11Speaker 10: Wow.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Well, look, our point is there's all different species and
- 16:16Speaker 1: all different types of fishing. You can do around this
- 16:20Speaker 1: area anything you'd want to do. And this guy does
- 16:23Speaker 1: all of them, So get in touch with Aby Raymond.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Captain Raymond, thanks for a great day here in Miami.
- 16:30Speaker 1: A good way to open the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor. Addition
- 16:35Speaker 1: for a Thursday on the water with Captain A. Raymond
- 16:39Speaker 1: out of Miami. And by the way, since we take that,
- 16:44Speaker 1: we did go on that little trip he was talking
- 16:49Speaker 1: about into the jungles of Inner Miami and it was
- 16:53Speaker 1: everything he said.
- 16:53Speaker 7: It wasn't more.
- 16:55Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. Jackfish, tarpin, peacock bass, cichlids, clown knife fish.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I don't know how many different species of fish we caught,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but it's amazing. When you get back there, you do
- 17:13Speaker 1: feel like you're in the jungles of South America until
- 17:16Speaker 1: a big, you know, jet flies over your head.
- 17:19Speaker 7: But very little else.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Such a cool trip to take and probably won't get
- 17:29Speaker 1: to Brazil for peacock bass, but man, that came close.
- 17:34Speaker 1: That was That was very cool with with cap maybe
- 17:39Speaker 1: and hope to be back with him later in the spring.
- 17:43Speaker 1: He's a favorite, as as you already know if you
- 17:46Speaker 1: pay attention. Chambers County Game Wardens inspected a small vessel
- 17:53Speaker 1: with four people on board. This was last month, they
- 17:57Speaker 1: were found to have multiple water safety and resource violations.
- 18:03Speaker 1: A large cooler found to be almost full to the
- 18:07Speaker 1: top with small black drum. After inspection, they were found
- 18:13Speaker 1: to be in possession of thirty eight undersize black drum
- 18:18Speaker 1: and exceeding the limit on those that were legal. Then
- 18:25Speaker 1: a week before that, Chambers County Game warden operating a
- 18:29Speaker 1: drone while flying over public water, two male subjects observed
- 18:34Speaker 1: trespassing while fishing on private property. The warden contacted the
- 18:40Speaker 1: subjects found them to be over their daily limit on
- 18:43Speaker 1: black drum, many of which undersized, as well as possession
- 18:49Speaker 1: of an undersized red. Citations issued, restitution pending. In other words,
- 18:56Speaker 1: they will be billed for the fish. The state of
- 18:59Speaker 1: ten X's sets values on each fish, and not only
- 19:03Speaker 1: do you pay a fine, you pay per fish depending
- 19:07Speaker 1: on what they the value that's been put on them. October,
- 19:14Speaker 1: Galveston County Wardens patrolling West Galveston, they inspected three fishermen
- 19:19Speaker 1: on a pier. They were found to be in possession
- 19:23Speaker 1: of fifteen undersized trout. After further inspections of their coolers
- 19:31Speaker 1: and buckets, an additional fifty seven trout, black drum and
- 19:39Speaker 1: other species found citations pending, so unless you went to Richardson,
- 19:47Speaker 1: you may not be able to add up that seventy
- 19:50Speaker 1: two illegal fish, including undersized trout. Jefferson County Game Warden
- 20:00Speaker 1: inspected a vessel returning from offshore federal waters. Found two
- 20:06Speaker 1: individuals to be in violation and possession of redfish obtained
- 20:11Speaker 1: in federal waters. Cases pending. Jefferson kind of Game warn
- 20:16Speaker 1: inspected two individuals fishing violations, found no fishing license and
- 20:23Speaker 1: undersize black drum cases pending. I know people think this way.
- 20:31Speaker 1: It's like, hey, there aren't many wardens. There's a lot
- 20:34Speaker 1: of us. There's a lot of water to cover, but
- 20:37Speaker 1: they're out there. God bless them. They're writing tickets to
- 20:41Speaker 1: stupid people. Don't be one of those people. I'm just saying,
- 20:49Speaker 1: don't be one of those stupid people. Contender is a
- 20:59Speaker 1: fourteen one foot sixteen hundred pound great white tracked off
- 21:06Speaker 1: the coach the coast of Charleston last week after months
- 21:12Speaker 1: of eating seals in Canada. Researchers believe the thirty year
- 21:18Speaker 1: old shark is following his seasonal route back toward the
- 21:22Speaker 1: warmer waters of Florida and Georgia. Transmitter sends a signal
- 21:27Speaker 1: only when the dorsal fin breaks the surface, which you
- 21:31Speaker 1: know isn't often. And October he made headlines and I
- 21:34Speaker 1: think we talked about this when his tracker pinged from
- 21:37Speaker 1: the northern Gulf of Saint Lawrence off the Labrador Peninsula,
- 21:41Speaker 1: making him one of the furthest northern pinging sharks that
- 21:44Speaker 1: they have tagged the mature males, but the summer and
- 21:48Speaker 1: fall feasting on seals to pack on fat before heading
- 21:53Speaker 1: south to the winter. I think we all do that,
- 21:55Speaker 1: don't we feast on seals, pack on fat before heading
- 22:00Speaker 1: south for the winter. Chris Fisher, founder of O Search,
- 22:04Speaker 1: says only a couple of made it that far north
- 22:06Speaker 1: and animalill like that. Spending the summer and fall up north.
- 22:10Speaker 1: What are they doing well, they're preparing for winter. He
- 22:14Speaker 1: added that contender's movements or a sign of recovery for
- 22:18Speaker 1: a population once nearly wiped out. He said the sixties seventies,
- 22:23Speaker 1: eighties we got down to nine percent population. Fisher and
- 22:27Speaker 1: his team closely watching contenders migration over the next few months.
- 22:32Speaker 1: His position in early twenty twenty six could help pinpoint
- 22:36Speaker 1: where great whites mate. That is a discovery that's never
- 22:41Speaker 1: been made. Fisher said, it's really going to be interesting
- 22:45Speaker 1: to watch.
- 22:46Speaker 7: Contender this year.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I want to know where he will be in March
- 22:49Speaker 1: and April. I think that could be a massive flue
- 22:53Speaker 1: for identifying where they mate. That's on the Atlantic side.
- 23:00Speaker 1: On the Pacific side, they have a little better idea
- 23:06Speaker 1: of that. I would say. I think we mentioned this
- 23:12Speaker 1: last week, but we're going to mention it again. Because
- 23:17Speaker 1: the Parks and Wildlife are stocking thousands of rainbow trout.
- 23:23Speaker 1: This is a great fish for kids. I will tell
- 23:29Speaker 1: you again. They do that locally at the parks. You
- 23:34Speaker 1: could get on the Parks and Wildlife website and find
- 23:39Speaker 1: out when even the stockings are. They do it throughout
- 23:42Speaker 1: the winter, up to over three hundred thousand rainbow trout
- 23:48Speaker 1: between November and March. They can't survive past that. You
- 23:56Speaker 1: have to keep it simple. I mean, like you're fishing
- 24:01Speaker 1: for perch, small hook if you want to use small hook, okay,
- 24:07Speaker 1: light line, a small bobber, just like you're fishing for
- 24:12Speaker 1: a little perch. Worms are good. They have little like
- 24:20Speaker 1: marshmallow colored baits that are scented that can be good.
- 24:26Speaker 1: So if you're going to take the kids out then
- 24:33Speaker 1: be aware of that, and you can go on the website.
- 24:36Speaker 1: They do it in parks in the major cities. They
- 24:39Speaker 1: do it here stocking locations a dozen local city and
- 24:44Speaker 1: county parts. These fish are good to eat, you can
- 24:48Speaker 1: keep them. You must know that kids under seventeen do
- 24:57Speaker 1: not require a fishing license, but there must be an
- 25:01Speaker 1: adult present with a fishing license and with a fresh
- 25:06Speaker 1: water fishing endorsement. Okay, that's very important. Five trout no
- 25:17Speaker 1: minimum length except on parts of the Guadalupe River where
- 25:23Speaker 1: they think trout not only survive, but they're thriving in
- 25:28Speaker 1: that area, and there's some huge drop in that area.
- 25:32Speaker 1: But there are online schedules and I suggest that you
- 25:38Speaker 1: take advantage of those during the wintertime. Days like today
- 25:43Speaker 1: would have been perfect. Tomorrow, the same, Saturday, the same,
- 25:49Speaker 1: and see when they're stocking around here their schedules and
- 25:54Speaker 1: go prepared. And the kids who have a great time
- 25:58Speaker 1: and it's fishing. Sometimes the bite sometime they don't. But
- 26:03Speaker 1: they're great fighters and they're great tasting. They're easy to clean.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And again five fish limit and everyone under seventeen can
- 26:16Speaker 1: fish free, but you must have a valid license. Okay,
- 26:22Speaker 1: very important. You must have a valid fishing license. Don't
- 26:27Speaker 1: say I didn't warn you or tell you about that. Hey,
- 26:32Speaker 1: the folks that luck O Ranch, I don't know if
- 26:38Speaker 1: this is apocryphal or not.
- 26:39Speaker 7: I have to talk to them.
- 26:40Speaker 1: There was a story years ago about a gentleman who
- 26:44Speaker 1: had quite a bit of land nearby and created a
- 26:49Speaker 1: little river running through it, oxygenated the water, cooled the
- 26:55Speaker 1: water down and had trout in there. Now again, unless
- 27:01Speaker 1: it's really well refrigerated area, those trout certainly aren't gonna
- 27:05Speaker 1: last ye in one hundred degree summers.
- 27:07Speaker 7: They need cool water.
- 27:08Speaker 1: My point being, at Luco Ranch, they will create fantasies
- 27:13Speaker 1: for you, or they'll just create a simple fishing pond
- 27:16Speaker 1: for the kids and grandkids. They will stock it, they
- 27:20Speaker 1: will manage it. They will build you a lake or
- 27:23Speaker 1: a pond. This is what they do every single day.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Fish management, fish stocking, electro fish surveys. They will clean
- 27:34Speaker 1: up your muddy pond, they will get the right amount
- 27:40Speaker 1: of vegetation to your overgrowned pond, and they will put
- 27:44Speaker 1: species of fish in that you didn't even know you
- 27:48Speaker 1: had available to catch in this area.
- 27:51Speaker 7: But you do.
- 27:52Speaker 8: So.

- 30:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition for Thursday.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Kirk Bowles with us Tomorrow, Ryan in tomorrow Writers Roundtable.
- 30:26Speaker 9: On Monday.
- 30:27Speaker 1: We'll have a playoff football game to preview for you
- 30:32Speaker 1: on Monday. A social media influencer with a history of
- 30:38Speaker 1: unscrupulous wildlife related behavior is under new scrutiny for falsifying
- 30:44Speaker 1: her residency to hunt big game in Wyoming. Samantha Strabel
- 30:51Speaker 1: gained notoriety earlier this year for grabbing a baby wombat
- 30:57Speaker 1: off the side of the road in Australia, a move
- 31:00Speaker 1: that brought on a slew of public backlash from her
- 31:05Speaker 1: social media followers. In the now deleted video, she snatches
- 31:10Speaker 1: the animal and runs back to her car with.
- 31:13Speaker 7: The mother in pursuit.
- 31:15Speaker 1: She holds it for about a minute and then lets
- 31:17Speaker 1: it go back into a ditch on the roadside. In
- 31:21Speaker 1: addition to the backlash, the incident brought to light other
- 31:24Speaker 1: wildlife crimes that she may have committed in the last
- 31:29Speaker 1: several years. Wyoming Game and Fish Department received an anonymous
- 31:35Speaker 1: tip that Strabel was purchasing big game tags in Wyoming
- 31:40Speaker 1: despite not having lived in the state for several years.
- 31:45Speaker 1: To qualify for resident licenses in Wyoming, individual has to
- 31:52Speaker 1: reside there for a year cannot leave for more than
- 31:54Speaker 1: one hundred and eighty days into calendar year. Warden Jacob
- 31:58Speaker 1: Miller found her to have allegedly been in violation of
- 32:02Speaker 1: all those statues. According to an affidavit obtained by local
- 32:05Speaker 1: news outlet Cowboy State Daily, Miller discovered Strabel held an
- 32:10Speaker 1: Alaska driver's license, had been working and living in Australia, Alaska, Montana,
- 32:18Speaker 1: North Dakota, spent only a few weeks a year in Wyoming.
- 32:21Speaker 1: In fact, she admitted it much in an interview with
- 32:26Speaker 1: the newspaper, which was published to showcase the young hunter's accomplishments.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Strabel told the reporter she worked as a seasonal wildlife
- 32:39Speaker 1: technician in Wyoming during the summers, but took off to travel,
- 32:43Speaker 1: work and hunt in other countries during the off season.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I can't stand six month winter, she said, so I
- 32:51Speaker 1: headed a southern hemisphere in November. December, she reported having
- 32:56Speaker 1: hunting red snag in red stag in Chile, wallabies, chammis Hamelian,
- 33:05Speaker 1: Himalayan tar wild pigs in New Zealand on a pig hunt.
- 33:10Speaker 1: She said her team used dogs to corner the animals
- 33:15Speaker 1: and knives mounted on long sticks to kill them by hand.
- 33:19Speaker 1: None of those stopped her from claiming a residency in
- 33:22Speaker 1: Wyoming and killing a handful of animals every fall before
- 33:28Speaker 1: taking off for greener pastures. In twenty twenty four, she
- 33:34Speaker 1: drew resident elk and antelope tags and filled in both.
- 33:40Speaker 1: In twenty five, she killed a mountain lion purchased a
- 33:44Speaker 1: resident black bear tag. In August, same day an anonymous
- 33:49Speaker 1: tip was received, she bought a Wyoming resident general elk tag,
- 33:55Speaker 1: but used a Montana mailing address. In November, a few
- 34:01Speaker 1: weeks ago, for following Warden Miller's investigation, Strabel was booked
- 34:06Speaker 1: into Sublette County Jail, charged with eight misdemeanors, including counts
- 34:12Speaker 1: of poaching wildlife, fall, swearing under oath, hunting a wilderness
- 34:17Speaker 1: area as a non resident without a guide in that
- 34:22Speaker 1: time of the conduct, she has deleted all her social
- 34:25Speaker 1: media accounts. Reportedly, she had around ninety five thousand followers
- 34:30Speaker 1: and was known for posting about hunting and fishing trips,
- 34:33Speaker 1: including illegal Wyoming hunts. The post beginning with the wombat video.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Probably got her in trouble after filming a notorious video
- 34:44Speaker 1: in Australia. An online petition calling for her deportation received
- 34:49Speaker 1: forty eight thousand signatures, and the Australian Minister of Home
- 34:53Speaker 1: Affairs said he was investigating whether her visa could be revoked.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Strabil left Australia on her own before that could happen,
- 35:02Speaker 1: but her reputation preceded her to Wyoming, leading to the
- 35:07Speaker 1: tip regarding her questionable residency status. If convicted of the charges,
- 35:14Speaker 1: Strable could face several thousand dollars in fine and potential
- 35:18Speaker 1: prison time. Finds up to ten thousand dollars illegally hunting
- 35:22Speaker 1: wilderness areas, thousand dollars poaching charges, ten thousand dollars revoked
- 35:29Speaker 1: hunting license, which needs to happen.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Of course, As.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Always, the story says they're innocent until proven guilty, but
- 35:43Speaker 1: her Southern Hemisphere trips may be on pause for a
- 35:47Speaker 1: little while. Meanwhile, there's this strange ways to die. A
- 35:54Speaker 1: Michigan resident died of rabies after receiving having a kidney
- 36:01Speaker 1: from a donor who had also succumbed to the disease.
- 36:06Speaker 1: The donor in Idaho man had been scratched by a
- 36:10Speaker 1: skunk while trying to protect a kitten. Well, that's his
- 36:13Speaker 1: first problem. The Michigan patient received a kidney transplant December
- 36:19Speaker 1: of last year. After five weeks Trimmer's weakness, confusion, other
- 36:23Speaker 1: symptoms after being hospitalized, placed on a ventilator, later died.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Post Mortem tests confirmed rabies, which puzzled the authorities, who
- 36:33Speaker 1: said he'd had no exposure to animals. Investigations revealed the
- 36:37Speaker 1: donor had been scratched by a skunk during a protective
- 36:40Speaker 1: encounter with a kitten. Although he did not believe he
- 36:43Speaker 1: had been bitten, he had been bleeding scratch on his skin.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Following that, began showing signs of confusion difficulty swallowing. He
- 36:51Speaker 1: was found unresponsive a couple of days later, declared brain dead.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I don't know why they ended up using this kidney,
- 36:59Speaker 1: but they did so. Basically, the skunk killed two people. Hey,
- 37:06Speaker 1: get them before.
- 37:08Speaker 7: They get you.
- 37:09Speaker 1: People, even if they're not trying, they are killing you.
- 37:16Speaker 1: So get them before they get you, capiche. All Right,
- 37:26Speaker 1: We're going to go back and listen to an interview
- 37:29Speaker 1: I did. It's been a couple of three years with
- 37:33Speaker 1: a favorite. Taylor Strike's a Hall of Fame fly fisherman,
- 37:36Speaker 1: an author. He's been on our show many times. We
- 37:39Speaker 1: have fished with him many times over the years. We're
- 37:46Speaker 1: in Taos, New Mexico Outdoor Edition and we're visiting with
- 37:49Speaker 1: Hall of Fame fly fisherman Taylor Streit. Taylor has one
- 37:53Speaker 1: of the I think one of the better gigs. You
- 37:56Speaker 1: can sit down, you don't have to stand up for me.
- 37:58Speaker 1: This is radio. You kind of are the unofficial official
- 38:03Speaker 1: scout of New Water for the Talis Fly Shop.
- 38:07Speaker 15: Indeed, I am.
- 38:08Speaker 16: Yes, nobody's actually asked me to do that, I but
- 38:12Speaker 16: I do it.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Well, I can't imagine there's water within one hundred and
- 38:17Speaker 1: fifty or two hundred miles of here that you haven't
- 38:20Speaker 1: fished before.
- 38:21Speaker 16: Well, I'm actually also working on a book that I've
- 38:24Speaker 16: been working on for a while for a while, which
- 38:27Speaker 16: is ties right into that because it's an in depth
- 38:32Speaker 16: book of fishing northern New Mexico fly fishing north of
- 38:37Speaker 16: New Mexico.
- 38:37Speaker 15: So it all fits in. And also, you know, I
- 38:44Speaker 15: like being out.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Are you ever surprised at some areas you go to
- 38:50Speaker 1: either a you've been there before and it's changed or
- 38:54Speaker 1: be you occasionally find these gyms that you've never found before.
- 38:57Speaker 16: That's a great question, because something I think about almost
- 39:01Speaker 16: every day, because one reason the book has taken me
- 39:06Speaker 16: so long is that if I just had managed to
- 39:09Speaker 16: do it in a year or two, there wouldn't be
- 39:13Speaker 16: all these changes, right, And so you know, whether it's
- 39:16Speaker 16: climate change or or land status change.
- 39:21Speaker 15: Or what else is there?
- 39:24Speaker 16: You know, water rights, Yeah, a myriad of things that
- 39:31Speaker 16: you just would never think of, you know, that occur
- 39:34Speaker 16: to these these waters that have to be updated.
- 39:38Speaker 15: So I'm updating the book as I go. I'm so
- 39:40Speaker 15: slow at it.
- 39:41Speaker 1: So well, I know there's a lot more people around,
- 39:45Speaker 1: that's a fact. The rivers are more crowded, the lakes
- 39:49Speaker 1: are more crowded, so there's more pressure on the fish.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And I know you spend some of your time battling
- 39:55Speaker 1: let's say, government officials who may not have the interest
- 39:59Speaker 1: of the outdoors person and fly fishermen at heart.
- 40:03Speaker 16: Well they're supposed to, one would think, But then you
- 40:07Speaker 16: come to realize what their motivations are to keep their job,
- 40:11Speaker 16: to keep their job, to not make any waves. You know,
- 40:15Speaker 16: I kind of get the feeling that and you know,
- 40:17Speaker 16: and I talk to other people in the outdoor business
- 40:20Speaker 16: and stuff, and we all kind of like, I think
- 40:23Speaker 16: most everybody in the outdoor business has this bottom line,
- 40:28Speaker 16: which is what's best for the environment and what you know,
- 40:32Speaker 16: it's like the unwritten like bottom line.
- 40:34Speaker 15: When you get the government, it don't.
- 40:36Speaker 16: Seem to work that way, and it seems to be,
- 40:40Speaker 16: you know, like you think maybe there's a big sign
- 40:42Speaker 16: as you walk into the office it says, don't irritate
- 40:45Speaker 16: the boss today, tomorrow, or ever. And you know they
- 40:51Speaker 16: try and smooth everything out. Oh no, everything's just going
- 40:54Speaker 16: fine with that.
- 40:55Speaker 8: You know.
- 40:56Speaker 1: What's the biggest issue you see right now that you
- 41:00Speaker 1: spending time on.
- 41:01Speaker 16: Well, the New Mexico Game of Fish has these properties,
- 41:05Speaker 16: and they don't they won't stand up for the properties,
- 41:11Speaker 16: and so somebody comes in and buys like they have leases.
- 41:15Speaker 16: So somebody comes in and buys the property. But they're
- 41:20Speaker 16: and they should know when they buy the property that
- 41:24Speaker 16: it's got an agreement that the publican fish there in perpetuity.
- 41:29Speaker 16: But that quickly falls by the wayside because the game
- 41:37Speaker 16: warden or whoever it might be, they seem to be
- 41:41Speaker 16: kind of intimidated, not kind of definitely intimidated by people
- 41:45Speaker 16: with money by you know, one of them person I'm
- 41:49Speaker 16: thinking of one of the landowners as a lawyer, and
- 41:52Speaker 16: you know that really got oh, we can't do nothing then,
- 41:55Speaker 16: you know, so because they won't go to court. They
- 41:58Speaker 16: won't They just you know, bend over. So yeah, and
- 42:04Speaker 16: I get so caught up on it and so frustrated
- 42:09Speaker 16: by it.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I know, in Colorado, where your brother owns a shop,
- 42:13Speaker 1: I mean, boy, it seems to me public access is.
- 42:17Speaker 9: Really narrower and narrower.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Every time I go up there. In terms of trying
- 42:21Speaker 1: to get on a river. I know that you don't
- 42:25Speaker 1: want it to be that in New Mexico.
- 42:28Speaker 15: Well, but it is and it's becoming.
- 42:31Speaker 16: So now there's a big push in New Mexico and
- 42:35Speaker 16: with a new governor and a new game commission to
- 42:41Speaker 16: make all streams in New Mexico public fishing, so that
- 42:45Speaker 16: you could start on this is the way, say, Argentina
- 42:48Speaker 16: is where I used to take people fishing them for
- 42:52Speaker 16: a long time, excuse me. And so there's this big
- 42:57Speaker 16: push to make everything public and point I would like
- 43:01Speaker 16: to make if anybody would ask me, this doesn't seem
- 43:04Speaker 16: to happen I'm usually too out spoken for anybody to
- 43:09Speaker 16: except for you, jip, But is that what's happening is
- 43:14Speaker 16: these properties streams are getting.
- 43:17Speaker 15: Bought by very wealthy people.
- 43:20Speaker 16: They are taken out of any kind of sector. You know,
- 43:26Speaker 16: if if they try and if they sell the fishing,
- 43:29Speaker 16: like we take people fishing on private stuff and there's
- 43:32Speaker 16: one hundred dollars. One hundred dollars doesn't mean anything. It
- 43:35Speaker 16: means something to a farmer, right, but it doesn't mean
- 43:37Speaker 16: anything to the people that are buying these properties. So
- 43:40Speaker 16: what's happened is all these streams are getting bought up
- 43:42Speaker 16: and taken out of circulation for the foreseeable future. But
- 43:49Speaker 16: if there was such a law, then there would be
- 43:53Speaker 16: probably a lot less of that, yes, and and so.
- 43:56Speaker 1: So you're kind of you're fighting for that right now,
- 43:59Speaker 1: are you? Are you optimistic or not?
- 44:03Speaker 16: Well, I'm I'm on this other thing. I'm I'm in
- 44:06Speaker 16: a smaller scale. There's this piece of water over in Trauma.
- 44:09Speaker 15: That that that.
- 44:10Speaker 16: You probably have fished, and it's it's gotten posted and
- 44:15Speaker 16: bought bought by somebody, and just that so I'm kind
- 44:18Speaker 16: of working on a.
- 44:19Speaker 1: But on one thing at a time. Right, You got
- 44:22Speaker 1: to go one stretch of river at a time.
- 44:23Speaker 16: Yeah, and not that other thing is too. You know,
- 44:26Speaker 16: I'm not in any kind of position really too. But
- 44:28Speaker 16: I well, if I ever get this book out, I
- 44:31Speaker 16: would be I can, I can, I can put my
- 44:33Speaker 16: two cents in there.
- 44:34Speaker 15: And I know that my current.
- 44:37Speaker 16: Book of fly Fishing New Mexico, which is you know,
- 44:40Speaker 16: sold forty thousand copies, is kind of the authority on
- 44:46Speaker 16: what's public and what's not, and people use.
- 44:50Speaker 15: It for that.
- 44:51Speaker 16: The Game Fish Department doesn't attend to it. So you know,
- 44:56Speaker 16: I've had people say that you know, that's that's the authority,
- 45:00Speaker 16: which I go, me, what, And so I've had to
- 45:04Speaker 16: take that into account and go, well, you're going to
- 45:07Speaker 16: be the only voice here, so you know you need
- 45:09Speaker 16: to get this right. And uh so, because there's there's
- 45:15Speaker 16: uh these properties that are public access that the Game
- 45:21Speaker 16: Fish Department doesn't even know they have.
- 45:23Speaker 1: So how would you describe the overall state of fishing?
- 45:28Speaker 1: I realized it's a broad question today as we sit
- 45:32Speaker 1: here today in northern New Mexico.
- 45:34Speaker 16: I'd say it's really never been better, really, yeah, and
- 45:40Speaker 16: and and why is that?
- 45:41Speaker 15: And I had, well, I had a.
- 45:43Speaker 16: Thing in the Albuquerque Journal a year or two ago,
- 45:46Speaker 16: and I and they can be pretty uh what's the
- 45:51Speaker 16: word risky in what they print. And so when I said, okay,
- 45:56Speaker 16: I'm doing a talk and I want somebody to be there,
- 46:00Speaker 16: called the upside of global warming.
- 46:03Speaker 15: So what it was.
- 46:05Speaker 16: Was that the rais and temperature has been has made
- 46:12Speaker 16: fishing in these parts better, the seasons longer, it's almost
- 46:19Speaker 16: I mean, we can catch fish twelve months a year.
- 46:22Speaker 16: And ah, but if you looked at say southern New
- 46:30Speaker 16: Mexico or the HeLa, uh, that's it's it's you know,
- 46:35Speaker 16: that's a different story. And who knows how long that'll be.
- 46:38Speaker 16: Because I'm not I'm definitely not a denier of you know,
- 46:42Speaker 16: I think it'll we better. Let's put it this way,
- 46:45Speaker 16: we better fish it now. Well that's good before it
- 46:49Speaker 16: gets too hot. But as it stands now so many
- 46:53Speaker 16: streams are in great condition. But I see more and
- 46:57Speaker 16: more growth in the water, you know, a sign of
- 47:04Speaker 16: degradation and things like that.
- 47:07Speaker 1: And so it seems to me that fishermen are more
- 47:12Speaker 1: aware of what's going on these days. Uh uh, there's
- 47:16Speaker 1: more information out there just in terms of preserving what
- 47:20Speaker 1: they have and trying to to leave it better than
- 47:22Speaker 1: they found it.
- 47:23Speaker 15: Yeah, and it's in writing a guide book.
- 47:26Speaker 16: You kind of got that juggling thing where you're where
- 47:29Speaker 16: you're sending people to a spot that you know.
- 47:33Speaker 15: In some cases you know.
- 47:34Speaker 9: What I'm being at.
- 47:35Speaker 16: Yeah, in some and uh, in some cases you you
- 47:41Speaker 16: you want to. I just wrote about one place which
- 47:44Speaker 16: I won't mention his name. I went, oh, nobody fishes there.
- 47:50Speaker 15: I've got to I've got to.
- 47:52Speaker 16: Uh think about this, and then I and then I
- 47:54Speaker 16: went something, which is the truth. I said, well, you've
- 47:57Speaker 16: got to make a lot of casts to catch a
- 48:00Speaker 16: It's going.
- 48:01Speaker 15: To be big, but you got to make a lot
- 48:03Speaker 15: of casts.
- 48:04Speaker 16: So I was trying to tone it down a little bit,
- 48:08Speaker 16: so you know, I wasn't the one responsible for this
- 48:11Speaker 16: big mass of people going there.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I want to go back where I started in that
- 48:17Speaker 1: is there water around that is surprising you Sometimes as
- 48:22Speaker 1: you scout, as you drive all over this part of
- 48:24Speaker 1: the country looking for different spots, have you been surprised
- 48:28Speaker 1: at what you found the last year or two.
- 48:31Speaker 16: Well, the actually the surprise has not been It's not
- 48:38Speaker 16: been from me because it's all the guides have been
- 48:41Speaker 16: fishing there so I don't need to go there and
- 48:42Speaker 16: scout it because we know.
- 48:44Speaker 8: What it is.
- 48:44Speaker 15: And that's the real grant.
- 48:46Speaker 16: Because we've had this situation with otters being put in
- 48:50Speaker 16: and I even made a big pitch about the negative
- 48:58Speaker 16: thing about it eat a lot of fish.
- 49:00Speaker 15: Well, yeah, and you can't find much negative about otters.
- 49:03Speaker 15: I'll tell you what.
- 49:04Speaker 7: People love them. They're very cute.
- 49:05Speaker 15: I googled, you know, there was like man attack by otter,
- 49:09Speaker 15: but yeah, nothing, you know, and.
- 49:12Speaker 16: If you read research on otters, you can pretty much
- 49:15Speaker 16: throw a whole PhD's paper away when it says they
- 49:18Speaker 16: don't like to taste the trout, because.
- 49:21Speaker 15: There's a whole lot of that.
- 49:22Speaker 16: There's a whole lot of like, you know, they really
- 49:24Speaker 16: like spawning trout is what they really like. And the
- 49:27Speaker 16: bigger the better. So they were causing a big of
- 49:33Speaker 16: having a big effect on the spawning. Yes, rainbows of
- 49:36Speaker 16: very large rainbows in the Red River that came out
- 49:40Speaker 16: of the Rio Grand a couple of years ago. But
- 49:42Speaker 16: with the super low water last year, they didn't come back.
- 49:46Speaker 16: And the fishing on the when I started before I
- 49:51Speaker 16: interrupted myself, is that the fishing on the Rear Grand
- 49:54Speaker 16: is last year was just stellar, incredibly good.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And you got to fish it early in a long
- 50:02Speaker 1: time because it was a dry year, right, right, This
- 50:04Speaker 1: year's just.
- 50:05Speaker 15: Opposite, right, right, This year's just in the long run.
- 50:09Speaker 7: Will that be good for the river?
- 50:10Speaker 1: I mean there's not people down there, they can't fish
- 50:12Speaker 1: it right now.
- 50:13Speaker 16: I would assume, yeah, they'll make it through the Yeah,
- 50:15Speaker 16: they don't mind the runoff. You know, they get skinny
- 50:18Speaker 16: and whatnot. But you know, they grab around on the
- 50:21Speaker 16: bottom and they eat things. But apparently that otter thing,
- 50:27Speaker 16: Apparently the otters are very good for the Rio Grande
- 50:30Speaker 16: and they've eliminated a lot of the competition that trout have,
- 50:33Speaker 16: like a carp pike and other fish that did eat
- 50:39Speaker 16: the same thing.
- 50:40Speaker 7: So right now it's turned out Okay.
- 50:42Speaker 15: It's turned out great.
- 50:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:43Speaker 16: So you know, I mean, you get a lot of
- 50:50Speaker 16: those animals and you gotta I'm just trying to report
- 50:54Speaker 16: what we find out, right, and you know, it was
- 50:57Speaker 16: negative and then it's positive, and you know, it's like
- 51:01Speaker 16: we're like science.
- 51:02Speaker 1: It's the balance we both know is so delicate, right,
- 51:07Speaker 1: I mean people talk about it all the time, but
- 51:10Speaker 1: it's very delicate.
- 51:13Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 51:13Speaker 16: Yeah, it's like you just Gottah. And unfortunately, if you
- 51:19Speaker 16: ask the government, they'll always say that they know we
- 51:23Speaker 16: have studies on them. You know that they don't because
- 51:26Speaker 16: for instance, in the Rio Grande they can't carry all
- 51:30Speaker 16: the gear in there, and it's a big deal.
- 51:31Speaker 15: And we know about it when they do it.
- 51:33Speaker 8: And so you know.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Anyway, so where you headed next, there's always a stream,
- 51:40Speaker 1: there's always a lake, there's always a place you're looking for.
- 51:44Speaker 9: Which direction are you headed west?
- 51:47Speaker 15: I'm kind of going with the flows.
- 51:48Speaker 16: I look at the every fishing guide looks as flow rates,
- 51:53Speaker 16: as you say, which.
- 51:53Speaker 9: Have been really high because of the late runoff, right.
- 51:55Speaker 16: But now they're getting just right. And so so we
- 52:02Speaker 16: are fishing over around Chama quite a bit and those
- 52:05Speaker 16: flows are are are looking good. At it does look
- 52:08Speaker 16: like we lost some fish in the Trauma system. There
- 52:10Speaker 16: was a whole lot of big fish there last year,
- 52:12Speaker 16: and I didn't think the really low water would sustain
- 52:17Speaker 16: that that that population. It does look like we lost some,
- 52:20Speaker 16: but it's still.
- 52:20Speaker 15: Well worth fishing.
- 52:21Speaker 16: But but and then I'm going to go over and
- 52:25Speaker 16: try the Navajo River on the Hickorea Indian Reservation.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Okay, see this guy's he's got a pretty good gig
- 52:32Speaker 1: right now.
- 52:32Speaker 9: And plus plus you don't have to guide people like
- 52:34Speaker 9: me anymore.
- 52:35Speaker 7: Well, you're sleeping better.
- 52:37Speaker 15: At noighting is tough.
- 52:38Speaker 16: But the problem is is I'm pretty well worn out
- 52:41Speaker 16: of fishing.
- 52:42Speaker 15: It's like work, you know. I'd rather catfish and.
- 52:45Speaker 9: Like, uh with a with a worm and a bobber.
- 52:48Speaker 15: Put a bell on the road and go to sleep.
- 52:51Speaker 9: Unfortunately, I know what you're saying. Uh, okay, So when's the.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Buck coming out?
- 52:56Speaker 8: The book?
- 52:58Speaker 7: Any day?
- 52:58Speaker 15: Now?
- 52:59Speaker 7: Any day?
- 53:00Speaker 8: Okay?
- 53:00Speaker 7: So when it comes out, you're gonna come on and
- 53:02Speaker 7: talk about it. Oh, you're gonna send me a copy?
- 53:04Speaker 15: I'd love to.
- 53:05Speaker 7: Yeah, do you have a title for it yet?
- 53:07Speaker 16: Or that's going to be called for want of a
- 53:09Speaker 16: better title, that's not the way to start a pitch.
- 53:14Speaker 16: But it's going to be called fly Fishing Tows in
- 53:16Speaker 16: Santa Fe. And that's because fly Fishing Nordon, New Mexico's
- 53:20Speaker 16: take in fly Fishing New Mexico's taken. So anyway, but
- 53:26Speaker 16: that pretty well, that's where the people are. That's not
- 53:29Speaker 16: necessarily the fish, but that's where the peat, the clients
- 53:32Speaker 16: and fishermen come from.
- 53:34Speaker 15: So you know, there you go.
- 53:36Speaker 1: We'll look for that. This is Hall of Famer Taylor
- 53:39Speaker 1: Strike with us on the Outdoor edition.
- 53:41Speaker 3: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 53:43Speaker 3: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 53:46Speaker 3: I found Shorlty Roofing and POI I'm glad I did.
- 53:48Speaker 3: The folks, said Shulty guided me every step of the way.
- 53:51Speaker 3: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 53:54Speaker 3: out of pocket cost would be after insurance. They took
- 53:57Speaker 3: the complication out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They
- 54:00Speaker 3: took off the damage roof, put on the new roof,
- 54:02Speaker 3: did all the clean up, and I had my new
- 54:04Speaker 3: roof in.
- 54:05Speaker 12: One day, be home by the bollroof.
- 54:14Speaker 17: The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for their Sunday night
- 54:16Speaker 17: game against the Vikings this week. Dallas is coming off
- 54:19Speaker 17: of a tough forty four to thirty loss at the Lions,
- 54:22Speaker 17: but since the Eagles lost on Monday, they still have
- 54:25Speaker 17: an outside shot at the postseason. Earlier this week, Cowboys
- 54:28Speaker 17: owner Jerry Jones spoke of the team's ability to make
- 54:31Speaker 17: it to the postseason.
- 54:32Speaker 18: Well, again, I know it's cliche, but we've got to
- 54:37Speaker 18: concentrate on the Chargers. I mean on the Minnesota Vikings
- 54:40Speaker 18: this weekend, and that's a big game for us. But boy,
- 54:46Speaker 18: you see that, Boy, you need to stay in there.
- 54:48Speaker 18: Every play, every play is meaningful right at his particular time.
- 54:54Speaker 18: And we sure got a shout at this thing.
- 54:56Speaker 17: The clearest path would be for the Cowboys to win
- 54:58Speaker 17: out while the Eagles lose to their last four. If
- 55:01Speaker 17: this occurs, then the Cowboys would win the NFC East.
- 55:04Speaker 17: The final post starts Sunday night against the Vikings with
- 55:07Speaker 17: kickoff schedule for seven to twenty. With your Dallas Cowboys report,
- 55:11Speaker 17: I'm doing more.
