- 0:21Speaker 1: From the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It is Jaggs Am J P.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Shadwick with John Ogier and we start right off the
- 0:29Speaker 1: rip today with Judy Bautista, NFL Network, the Goat.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Nice to see you, good morning.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Very much, great to be here.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Good how are you well.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It's always a pleasure to catch up with you. Thanks
- 0:41Speaker 1: for taking some time this morning. We've got plenty to
- 0:43Speaker 1: get to. We'll hear from Liam Cohen and James Gladstone
- 0:46Speaker 1: coming up in just a little bit. But here we
- 0:49Speaker 1: are again, Jaguars with a new staff in place. The
- 0:53Speaker 1: process to get to this point. I feel like we've
- 0:55Speaker 1: had this story at the Combine a lot over the
- 0:58Speaker 1: last thirty years or so, but this is the youngest
- 1:03Speaker 1: of the Oh my goodness, what do you think?
- 1:06Speaker 3: They're young? But I think that's okay. First of all,
- 1:09Speaker 3: we've seen that.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Trend in the NFL going towards younger energy. Seems to
- 1:15Speaker 4: be a big thing that teams.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Want, right that that factor.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I think we saw that in Carolina when they hired
- 1:22Speaker 4: Dad Canalis last year. Seems sort of thing they wanted,
- 1:24Speaker 4: that vibe and somebody who can connect with a young
- 1:27Speaker 4: quarterback and that's certainly when you hear them, and you
- 1:31Speaker 4: don't even need to hear them, you just know it.
- 1:32Speaker 4: You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know
- 1:34Speaker 4: if they've got to connect and get the most out
- 1:36Speaker 4: of Trevor to make this war.
- 1:38Speaker 5: And the McVeigh tree, if you will, as trees do.
- 1:44Speaker 5: They seem to be sort of growing roots and defining
- 1:48Speaker 5: a lot of the league the way other systems have
- 1:50Speaker 5: in the past. What do you think about their approach
- 1:54Speaker 5: works overall? And that's it's becoming such a mainstay.
- 2:01Speaker 6: Of the league.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Well, I do think the emphasis on offense, I mean
- 2:04Speaker 4: is just and the emphasis on quarterback play and quarterback development,
- 2:08Speaker 4: I mean, this is where the league is, right. I
- 2:11Speaker 4: think we all love the idea of well, defense wins championships,
- 2:15Speaker 4: and that's true to a degree. But if you don't
- 2:17Speaker 4: have top level quarterback play.
- 2:20Speaker 3: You don't go anywhere.
- 2:22Speaker 4: And Philadelphia is absolutely the perfect example of that. Right,
- 2:26Speaker 4: they have tremendous defensive play, they have a tremendous running back,
- 2:33Speaker 4: but if Jalen Hurts doesn't have a great stretch during
- 2:37Speaker 4: the playoffs and certainly in the Super Bowl, like, are
- 2:41Speaker 4: they the world champions? Right?
- 2:42Speaker 3: Now, I don't think so. You're still not.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Getting there without top level quarterback play. And so to
- 2:46Speaker 4: the extent that the McVeigh tree has produced guys who
- 2:50Speaker 4: can connect with quarterbacks and get the best out of quarterbacks,
- 2:53Speaker 4: that's what's going to be successful these days.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Judy Batista, NFL Media with US.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Is mister Kahn's four heat season of ownership coming up?
- 3:02Speaker 1: You're close to a lot of the ownership around the NFL.
- 3:06Speaker 1: He's going to be seventy five years old next year.
- 3:08Speaker 1: He's done in a number of different ways putting together
- 3:11Speaker 1: football leadership, but now he's split it up into three
- 3:14Speaker 1: distinct roles, the head coach, the GM and the EVP
- 3:17Speaker 1: of football operations at Tony Boselli. What is the general
- 3:23Speaker 1: consensus on mister Kahn's ownership around the league when when
- 3:26Speaker 1: you hear from others in a similar position.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Well, first of all, I think most importantly for fans, right,
- 3:32Speaker 4: he is willing to invest his money in the team
- 3:36Speaker 4: and in surrounding them with everything they need to be successful.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:40Speaker 4: I mean the facility, the training facility is fantastic. Right,
- 3:44Speaker 4: They're going to upgrade the stadium, like he is willing
- 3:48Speaker 4: to spend whatever it takes to win. Then it is
- 3:51Speaker 4: just a matter of the GM and you know football
- 3:55Speaker 4: ops like doing their jobs well and coaches doing their
- 3:58Speaker 4: jobs well. But from an ownership person respective, he is
- 4:01Speaker 4: what you want because he is willing to put his
- 4:03Speaker 4: money behind what he wants. But he is also not meddling, right,
- 4:09Speaker 4: Like he is empowering people, right, and he did that
- 4:12Speaker 4: and he's done that with past regimes too. But he
- 4:14Speaker 4: empowers his people that he thinks of the right people
- 4:17Speaker 4: to do what they think needs to be done. You know,
- 4:20Speaker 4: the question is has he empowered the right people? But
- 4:22Speaker 4: that's the same question that every franchise right faces And
- 4:27Speaker 4: like you know, Shot is a relatively new owner in
- 4:30Speaker 4: the scheme of the NFL. You've seen franchises with much
- 4:35Speaker 4: longer ownership tenures right, family owners who have been family
- 4:40Speaker 4: owners since the very beginning who struggle with this. So
- 4:43Speaker 4: it is it's not a matter of like Shobs too
- 4:45Speaker 4: new with this. He still doesn't know what he's doing, Like, oh,
- 4:48Speaker 4: they all struggle with it at some point. So I
- 4:51Speaker 4: think for fans, he's what you wanted an owner because
- 4:54Speaker 4: he is willing to spend what needs to be spent.
- 4:56Speaker 5: I think what people lose sight of it. That is,
- 4:58Speaker 5: it takes a while for an owner to figure out
- 5:02Speaker 5: how to do it. And each sort of regime you
- 5:06Speaker 5: put in, it's not like there's a six month learning
- 5:08Speaker 5: curve on that. Each regime you put in is a
- 5:11Speaker 5: four or five year process, So it tends to take
- 5:13Speaker 5: a while. It's like you said, there's really no magic.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Everybody asked me all seasons, should they do an e VP?
- 5:19Speaker 5: Should they do just GM? There's no magic formula, right, No,
- 5:23Speaker 5: some have it and.
- 5:24Speaker 4: It works and some don't and it works like it's
- 5:27Speaker 4: it's just do you have the right people in place?
- 5:30Speaker 4: And so let's be honest. So much of this is luck.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Do you hit on the right quarterback? Does that quarterback
- 5:38Speaker 4: rot continue to develop?
- 5:41Speaker 2: You know?
- 5:41Speaker 3: Do you avoid injuries?
- 5:42Speaker 4: I mean just on a year to year basis, so
- 5:44Speaker 4: much of wins and losses goes to things that you
- 5:47Speaker 4: just can't even anticipate.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I have questions for the NFL experts.
- 5:56Speaker 2: To talk to the experts.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Off season trends. As you start to look at the
- 6:01Speaker 5: off season, what's going to shape the NFL? Until we
- 6:06Speaker 5: get to maybe OTA's what are going to be the
- 6:08Speaker 5: storylines You're looking for at the owners meetings, et cetera.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Well, first of I mean at the owner's meetings. I'm
- 6:14Speaker 4: curious to see how much more they add to replay
- 6:17Speaker 4: assist because they've.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Which is a slippery slope when they do that right
- 6:21Speaker 5: correct now.
- 6:21Speaker 4: I think they like the way it worked last year,
- 6:23Speaker 4: which was, you know, basically hits to the head and
- 6:27Speaker 4: neck of a quarterback. Like it very narrowly defined. They
- 6:31Speaker 4: would allow replay assists to say like, nah, that they
- 6:34Speaker 4: didn't really hit them in the head, pick up the flag.
- 6:37Speaker 4: But they want to add more. Roger Goodell said this,
- 6:40Speaker 4: they want to use technology to help officials. He spent
- 6:43Speaker 4: a lot of time defending officials at the Super Bowl,
- 6:47Speaker 4: and I think they recognize the game is so fast
- 6:49Speaker 4: that it is very hard for officials to officiate it
- 6:52Speaker 4: correctly in real time, whereas the rest of us you
- 6:54Speaker 4: get to watch on a monitor and see a million
- 6:56Speaker 4: replays and slow motion.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Obviously that person was hitting the head. Why wasn't a
- 7:01Speaker 3: flag throne? Of course that's a face mask.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Well, you know not when the guys are running at
- 7:05Speaker 4: full speed and the official is trailing, it's very hard
- 7:08Speaker 4: to see. So I'm curious to see how much more
- 7:11Speaker 4: replaces they're willing to use. They've always been reluctant to
- 7:13Speaker 4: use it to like add penalties that were not already
- 7:17Speaker 4: thrown on the field. And that is the question is
- 7:20Speaker 4: are they going to cross that bridge?
- 7:21Speaker 5: Well, because that's a big The spirit of replay originally
- 7:25Speaker 5: was get the call right if the guy in the
- 7:28Speaker 5: sports bar can see it right.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Correct.
- 7:30Speaker 2: And then when.
- 7:31Speaker 5: You're talking about what you're talking about, are they bringing
- 7:33Speaker 5: back pass interference into it?
- 7:34Speaker 4: Which is just that I think that that I think
- 7:36Speaker 4: scarred them so significantly that it's going to be a
- 7:39Speaker 4: long time before we get to subjective calls being reviewable.
- 7:43Speaker 4: That was moved such a mask. But right, you're moving
- 7:47Speaker 4: toward things like that.
- 7:48Speaker 2: What about the push pleasure?
- 7:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 7:52Speaker 4: So, like nothing I've ever tweeted got as much traction
- 7:55Speaker 4: as when I tweeted that there was a team that
- 7:57Speaker 4: wanted to get rid of the push.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Play and it was the Packers that brought it up.
- 8:01Speaker 4: It is the Packers and Mark Murphy, who is about
- 8:04Speaker 4: to retire, had written about his opposition to the push play.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Here's the thing about the push play. It looks like
- 8:09Speaker 4: a play that should cause injuries, right except it's run
- 8:13Speaker 4: so infrequently that there's no injury data, so the league
- 8:17Speaker 4: can't look at it and say, look at all this
- 8:19Speaker 4: injury data, we got to get rid of this play.
- 8:20Speaker 4: There's just nothing to suggest that because knock on wood,
- 8:24Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts doesn't get hurt. They're awesome at it. Very
- 8:28Speaker 4: few other teams even attempted, so there's not that thing
- 8:32Speaker 4: that could push them to ban it. There's also the
- 8:34Speaker 4: element of people who just think, like, this doesn't really
- 8:37Speaker 4: look like a football play, right, This looks like a
- 8:38Speaker 4: rugby play should allowed that it doesn't feel right. The
- 8:43Speaker 4: reality of the situation, though, is like once a defense
- 8:46Speaker 4: stops it, people will stop running it.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:49Speaker 4: The fact is nobody has effectively stopped it right, and
- 8:54Speaker 4: nobody stopped it knock on wood, nobody's gotten hurt.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I keep saying, and this is a fatalist way of
- 8:59Speaker 3: looking at it.
- 8:59Speaker 4: But like the first time a quarterback attempts it and
- 9:02Speaker 4: gets his shoulder dislocated will be the last time that
- 9:05Speaker 4: play is run right, right, Like that will be the
- 9:07Speaker 4: end of the play. I it's very hard to get
- 9:11Speaker 4: twenty four votes on anything, very hard to get ownership
- 9:14Speaker 4: to agree on anything.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Twenty four votes. I'd be really surprised.
- 9:17Speaker 4: If they get rid of it, because I think the
- 9:18Speaker 4: answer is, like stop it, get your defense to stop it,
- 9:21Speaker 4: and will stop running it.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Jaguar stopped it twice this year, that's right, two point plays.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It blew up the center. It was a highlight and
- 9:29Speaker 2: his in went up and ran into the quarterback.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I mean the reality is, and I mean you heard
- 9:32Speaker 3: Nick Sirianni.
- 9:33Speaker 4: He's like, I'm sort of offended by this, you know, Like,
- 9:35Speaker 4: I mean, they're really good at it and they practice it,
- 9:38Speaker 4: which is why other teams are not as good at it,
- 9:41Speaker 4: because first of all, they don't have a quarterback who
- 9:43Speaker 4: can squat whatever it is he squats six hundred pounds
- 9:45Speaker 4: or something ridiculous. They don't have, you know, Jordan Malatta.
- 9:49Speaker 4: They always run it right behind him right and he
- 9:51Speaker 4: goes down low. They didn't have Jason Kelsey who could
- 9:54Speaker 4: really go so they don't have the personnel. They don't
- 9:57Speaker 4: have the commitment to running it. They're not practicing it
- 9:59Speaker 4: the way the Eagles do. If other teams had those elements,
- 10:03Speaker 4: they would be able to run it to and defenses
- 10:07Speaker 4: need to figure out how to stop it. You saw
- 10:08Speaker 4: the Chiefs in the Super Bowl try to line up
- 10:10Speaker 4: Chris Jones turned sideways.
- 10:11Speaker 3: He got hurt.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I think on that play, so that again, I I
- 10:18Speaker 4: hate to put it this way, but you know, the
- 10:19Speaker 4: first time it's run in a quarterback gets blown up
- 10:21Speaker 4: and gets hurt, that will probably be the last time
- 10:23Speaker 4: it gets run.
- 10:24Speaker 5: And then there's the precedent if you stop that play
- 10:26Speaker 5: the next time Simmy comes it to the play, Well,
- 10:28Speaker 5: why don't you stop that too, right.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I mean, like just I mean, you got to. I
- 10:31Speaker 4: would be really surprised if they ban it. Let's put
- 10:33Speaker 4: it that line.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Judy Bautista, NFL Media Final, A couple of minutes with
- 10:36Speaker 1: you mentioned the new group here, Bosselli, Gladstone Cohen, how
- 10:41Speaker 1: long is the honeymoon last.
- 10:44Speaker 4: First week the season usually? I think, Look, I think
- 10:47Speaker 4: you have to give new regimes time. I mean, unless
- 10:51Speaker 4: it is just a complete catastrophe, which obviously we've had before.
- 10:55Speaker 4: But I think you have to give them some time
- 10:58Speaker 4: to get the players that they think fit their program.
- 11:02Speaker 4: You know, you can't redo a roster in one off season.
- 11:05Speaker 4: You can do a lot, but you can't do the
- 11:07Speaker 4: whole thing. You got to give them time to get
- 11:09Speaker 4: their program in, but you know, they got to win
- 11:12Speaker 4: some games too. And I think mostly what you have
- 11:15Speaker 4: to see to convince you that this is going to
- 11:17Speaker 4: work is just Trevor get righted right, because a few
- 11:21Speaker 4: years ago, Trevor was clearly on the upward path right
- 11:25Speaker 4: and was soaring and they made the push into the
- 11:28Speaker 4: playoffs and you're thinking, wow, the future is now. They
- 11:31Speaker 4: look great and then things have just declined since then.
- 11:34Speaker 4: And so I think the first thing you got to
- 11:36Speaker 4: see is does Trevor look comfortable? Are they doing things
- 11:39Speaker 4: in the off season to help Trevor? Are they shoring
- 11:42Speaker 4: up the offensive line right like they got to work
- 11:44Speaker 4: on that?
- 11:44Speaker 5: Like?
- 11:44Speaker 4: Are they doing things that will enhance the fact that
- 11:47Speaker 4: you have this guy?
- 11:48Speaker 5: Two final thoughts on rules. Do they care enough about
- 11:52Speaker 5: kickoffs to adjust it again? And can they fix on
- 11:55Speaker 5: side kick? Is there anything like that?
- 11:57Speaker 4: I think they're probably going to adjust the kickoff to
- 11:59Speaker 4: move the much back line up to the thirty five.
- 12:02Speaker 4: That will incentifize teams not to kick it into the
- 12:04Speaker 4: end zone. That should give you more returns. Hopefully they
- 12:08Speaker 4: keep the concussion rate low, because that was the real
- 12:11Speaker 4: reason for changing the kickoff on on side kick. They
- 12:14Speaker 4: have been discussing with the special teams, coaches, changing the alignment.
- 12:18Speaker 4: The problem with the onside kick is, you know, if
- 12:20Speaker 4: you're a kicking team and you're trying to recover an
- 12:22Speaker 4: onside kick, how do you do that? Well, you blow
- 12:23Speaker 4: up the other guy, right like you just absolutely the
- 12:26Speaker 4: last day, which is what they don't want. So they
- 12:28Speaker 4: got to figure out a way, like if you adjust
- 12:30Speaker 4: the alignment, do you give a team the better chance
- 12:33Speaker 4: to recover they only need The historic rate of recovery
- 12:36Speaker 4: of an on side kick is only thirteen point five percent,
- 12:39Speaker 4: so you don't have to generate all that many. You
- 12:42Speaker 4: just have to generate some. So we'll see if they
- 12:44Speaker 4: come up with that.
- 12:45Speaker 5: I don't know, somewhat more interesting, yes, I.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Mean it's right now it is a ceremonial play, and
- 12:49Speaker 4: they don't want those.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Would they do the fourth and fifteen idea?
- 12:53Speaker 4: There's still teams that think that's something to look at.
- 12:56Speaker 4: But I mean you talk to some coaches and not coaches,
- 12:59Speaker 4: some owners who's say that is gimmicky and we don't
- 13:01Speaker 4: want that. That's always been the argument against it. But
- 13:04Speaker 4: they also have to come up with something.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Judy, you're the best, Judy Bautista, NFL Media. Always a
- 13:10Speaker 1: pleasure to visit with you.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Great to be here with you guys.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Good to see you rest of the week.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 13:15Speaker 2: How long are you here?
- 13:17Speaker 3: I leave my hotel tomorrow at four am. My flights
- 13:19Speaker 3: at six am, so not much longer.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yeah that is thanks Judy. Thanks see you later, Judy
- 13:25Speaker 1: Bautista with us back in a moment. We'll hear from
- 13:27Speaker 1: Jaguars head coach Liam Cohen when we return. It's Jaggs Am,
- 13:48Speaker 1: Welcome back. It's Jags Am from the Indiana Convention Center
- 13:51Speaker 1: in Indianapolis, just across the street from Lucas Oil Stadium.
- 13:55Speaker 1: The NFL scouting Combine is underway and the first prospects
- 14:01Speaker 1: were at the podium this morning defensive lineman. The on
- 14:04Speaker 1: field work begins a little bit later this week. JP Shaddick,
- 14:07Speaker 1: John Oser, thanks to Judy Batista, NFL Media. Let's get
- 14:10Speaker 1: into the big things of the week, John, and start
- 14:13Speaker 1: off with Liam Cohen, the Jaguars new head coach, making
- 14:16Speaker 1: the rounds yesterday at the podium on Radio Row doing
- 14:21Speaker 1: some one on ones and with us as well. There's
- 14:24Speaker 1: that big question about who has final say.
- 14:28Speaker 7: Just doesn't even like hit my brain. That's what's crazy
- 14:31Speaker 7: about the question. Is I get the question. We all do.
- 14:35Speaker 5: But if that's what's driving us, we.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Have no shot.
- 14:39Speaker 2: We have no shot.
- 14:40Speaker 7: Ego and agenda will not take place in this organization
- 14:45Speaker 7: for us, It just won't. We if we cannot make
- 14:49Speaker 7: a decision, we are completely on opposite ends of the
- 14:52Speaker 7: spectrum when it comes to any decision, We've got to
- 14:55Speaker 7: move on from that decision.
- 14:56Speaker 2: How do we pivot?
- 14:58Speaker 7: There's plenty, especially with player acquisition, there's so many players
- 15:01Speaker 7: that we can go and move on to that maybe
- 15:03Speaker 7: we're closer on right. If we're completely on the opposite
- 15:07Speaker 7: ends of the spectrum, we got to move on.
- 15:10Speaker 1: That's the head coach John and pretty clearly they are
- 15:13Speaker 1: trying to Yeah, they're hearing that question a lot.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Well.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Sometimes reality and the way people analyze things differs from how.
- 15:26Speaker 3: They're different.
- 15:28Speaker 5: People always want to know what final say is, and
- 15:30Speaker 5: the reality is, once you get inside a building and
- 15:32Speaker 5: you're talking about draft picks, you're talking about free agents,
- 15:35Speaker 5: it's usually not a situation where the GM and the
- 15:38Speaker 5: head coach are sitting on the opposite side is playing battleship,
- 15:42Speaker 5: sinking each other right, there's usually common ground. They all
- 15:46Speaker 5: who the good players are. Hey, can we afford this
- 15:49Speaker 5: guy with this bunch. I just don't think there's gonna
- 15:53Speaker 5: be Holy Wars in that sense, and I think the
- 15:56Speaker 5: approach that they're taking makes a lot of sense. Look,
- 15:59Speaker 5: if there's a guy that they're not aligned on, then
- 16:03Speaker 5: it's not gonna work anyway. So move on to the
- 16:05Speaker 5: next guy. And so now at some point, if in
- 16:10Speaker 5: two years they're not winning and there's battles and whatnot,
- 16:14Speaker 5: because that kind of thing happens, then that might change.
- 16:17Speaker 5: But this system is they're doing it. It makes sense.
- 16:22Speaker 5: They've all come from that sort of system and it's
- 16:25Speaker 5: what they're going with. So we'll keep hearing about final say,
- 16:29Speaker 5: and they'll keep laughing at it.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I just picture when you said the battleship the electric
- 16:33Speaker 1: battleship game with the noises and the thing, Yes, you
- 16:37Speaker 1: suck my battles Yeah, yeah, So now that would be interesting.
- 16:42Speaker 5: That would be a good uh Jaguars behind the.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Scenes, certainly, let's hear from James Ladstone Jaguars GM also
- 16:49Speaker 1: on the podium yesterday here in Indianapolis and making the
- 16:52Speaker 1: rounds with us as well.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Clear communication is key.
- 16:57Speaker 8: That is such a key component to finding success really
- 17:00Speaker 8: in any walk of life, right in any partnership. So
- 17:04Speaker 8: it's definitely something that I value. And you know, I
- 17:07Speaker 8: think back to my dad was such an influence all
- 17:09Speaker 8: my life in a small group setting. I don't think
- 17:11Speaker 8: that there's anybody who does a better job than him,
- 17:13Speaker 8: And so to emulate kind of sure, his cadence, his rhythm,
- 17:18Speaker 8: things like that. It was easy to apply that because
- 17:21Speaker 8: I grew up in the same house as him, right,
- 17:23Speaker 8: so he was he was my football coach. He was
- 17:25Speaker 8: a guy that I worked with as a coach, so
- 17:27Speaker 8: you know, being around that for so many years, it
- 17:29Speaker 8: was just easy to emulate.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Glad still thirty four years of age now the general manager.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Well, he's he's really impressive. I mean I didn't know
- 17:40Speaker 5: much about him because there's really no way to know
- 17:43Speaker 5: a lot about assistant general managers and other teams. They're
- 17:47Speaker 5: not in the media a whole lot. They don't talk
- 17:49Speaker 5: to the press a whole lot, so you don't get
- 17:52Speaker 5: a feel for what these guys are like. You can
- 17:55Speaker 5: tell very quickly listening to him and talking to him
- 17:59Speaker 5: that this guy is a communicator on a high level.
- 18:03Speaker 5: And you might say, well, so what everybody can talk, right,
- 18:07Speaker 5: everybody can communicate, But as he said, I don't think
- 18:13Speaker 5: it was in that SoundBite. The NFL is so complex
- 18:17Speaker 5: and there's so many moving parts and there's so many
- 18:19Speaker 5: different people involved that the ability for the general manager
- 18:23Speaker 5: to communicate exactly what they're looking for, exactly what they're
- 18:27Speaker 5: looking for in a player, exactly what the goals are,
- 18:30Speaker 5: exactly what the objectives are, and to get people on
- 18:32Speaker 5: the same page and talking and get his systems working,
- 18:37Speaker 5: it's very difficult. Bill Poullin, who I worked with in Indianapolis,
- 18:40Speaker 5: was very good at that in terms of making sure
- 18:43Speaker 5: the scouts knew what the coaches wanted and the coaches
- 18:47Speaker 5: could communicate what they're looking for in players. I haven't
- 18:49Speaker 5: been around James Glastow. He's never been a GM, so
- 18:51Speaker 5: I can't compare him to a Hall of Famer, but
- 18:54Speaker 5: he does seem to have that trait of being able
- 18:56Speaker 5: to communicate his ideas and his thoughts very well. Think
- 19:00Speaker 5: that's very important for a GM, and you know he's uh.
- 19:05Speaker 5: I don't want to get into a brain braw competition
- 19:07Speaker 5: with him. Put it that way, because I'm not gonna win.
- 19:09Speaker 2: No, probably not.
- 19:10Speaker 5: He's a sharp guy, he is.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Let's now finish for our final big thing today, the
- 19:14Speaker 1: path Forward, and it really begins with meetings here at
- 19:19Speaker 1: the Combine for the coaching staff. Yes, they're having meetings
- 19:22Speaker 1: with prospects and the normal Combine activities here interviews and watching,
- 19:27Speaker 1: testing and all that, but they're also having staff meetings
- 19:30Speaker 1: just trying to get their systems in place, offense, defense
- 19:34Speaker 1: and everything. Well, they can't waste any time, so it begins.
- 19:37Speaker 1: The path forward begins here in Indianapolis. The entire staff
- 19:41Speaker 1: is here.
- 19:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I think this is going to be a topic
- 19:45Speaker 5: because Gladstone got hired in late February and you have
- 19:49Speaker 5: free agency three weeks away. But I think the way
- 19:51Speaker 5: they explained it makes a lot of sense. Most teams
- 19:54Speaker 5: don't you think about the calendar, JP, We've been around
- 19:57Speaker 5: this for a while. Most teams don't start releasing play
- 20:00Speaker 5: for cap reasons and signing. Even other teams released free
- 20:04Speaker 5: agents until a few days before the freegency begins, because
- 20:08Speaker 5: the meetings are really taking place now. There's other things
- 20:10Speaker 5: going on in January, and then they start full bore
- 20:13Speaker 5: on free agency right now. So there's I think Gladstone's
- 20:21Speaker 5: going to be very busy in the next few weeks
- 20:23Speaker 5: getting caught up on, to use his word, calibrated with
- 20:29Speaker 5: everything else is going on. But the system that the
- 20:31Speaker 5: Jaguars have had in place has been ongoing already, So
- 20:35Speaker 5: it's an interesting week on that front. They're bonding. It
- 20:39Speaker 5: sounds like they're on a really cool road trip where
- 20:41Speaker 5: there's camaraderie going on. I think that's an element for them,
- 20:44Speaker 5: But I think in terms of football stuff, I just
- 20:48Speaker 5: don't think it's going to set them behind it all
- 20:51Speaker 5: in what they're trying to do, And I think by
- 20:53Speaker 5: the time the league year rolls around, it's gonna feel
- 20:57Speaker 5: pretty seamless and you're not gonna get the sense at
- 21:01Speaker 5: all of a franchise behind.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we're closing in on the start of the league year.
- 21:05Speaker 5: March twelfth comes up quick. Yeah, I just thinking them
- 21:07Speaker 5: and they made the Super Bowl back one more year,
- 21:09Speaker 5: I mean or one more week. So uh, it's a
- 21:13Speaker 5: quick it's a quick turnaround the off season for all teams.
- 21:16Speaker 2: There you have it.
- 21:17Speaker 1: We're back in a moment plenty more ahead here from
- 21:19Speaker 1: Indianapolis on Jags A.
- 21:21Speaker 7: M Yeah, that's what this is it's being able to
- 21:39Speaker 7: be around the guys where we finally have complete you know,
- 21:42Speaker 7: basically finalize this staff, really get into the weeds of now, Hey,
- 21:46Speaker 7: the communication that we have with each other. The offensive
- 21:49Speaker 7: staff is meeting currently right now.
- 21:52Speaker 2: And then when you get.
- 21:53Speaker 7: Into the evaluation and get into some of these formal
- 21:55Speaker 7: meetings settings, Hey, we're evaluating coaches just as much as
- 21:59Speaker 7: anything and able to give feedback and see what these
- 22:02Speaker 7: guys can truly do.
- 22:03Speaker 2: It's been exciting. Liam Cohen, Jaguars head coach yesterday.
- 22:08Speaker 6: The full availability and our.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Conversation with him available at Jaguars dot com and Jaguars YouTube.
- 22:14Speaker 1: The new season right around the corner of the time
- 22:15Speaker 1: to get your season ticket membership is right now. You
- 22:18Speaker 1: can be at the bank for every touchdown and secure
- 22:20Speaker 1: your seats at Jaguars dot com, slash tickets or call
- 22:24Speaker 1: nine oh four six three three two thousand, Key Shadwick,
- 22:28Speaker 1: John Ozer. Thanks to Judy Batista earlier joining us and
- 22:31Speaker 1: also coming up tomorrow, John, Jaguars Happy Hour Radio four o'clock.
- 22:36Speaker 2: You'll be on for a segment. Well, be cool forward
- 22:39Speaker 2: to that and then it's.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Frisco and Boselli for what could be one of the
- 22:42Speaker 1: final times together.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean four fifteen. I hope you'll join us.
- 22:47Speaker 5: It's been a great show. Jaguars fans love it. Tony's
- 22:50Speaker 5: roles changing a bit, so to have him on the air,
- 22:54Speaker 5: you know, arguing with the little Italian guy, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 5: probably won't continue, but it's you know, look, I love
- 23:04Speaker 5: the show. They've both been I've known both for well
- 23:07Speaker 5: over thirty years. Tony's become a friend. Pete's one of
- 23:10Speaker 5: my best friends in the business. Anybody who has enjoyed
- 23:14Speaker 5: that show knows it'll be missed in the Jaguars ecosystem
- 23:19Speaker 5: is a big word. It'll be missed. But I can
- 23:23Speaker 5: tell you this, Tony Boselli, in the role that he's in,
- 23:28Speaker 5: is having a huge impact on the organization and an
- 23:31Speaker 5: incredibly positive light. He sees the details. He is having
- 23:38Speaker 5: an unbelievable impact on the culture already. So whatever trade
- 23:42Speaker 5: off of not having him on the air, you know,
- 23:46Speaker 5: TB seventy one is you know doing now I think
- 23:51Speaker 5: what he's meant to do. So the show will be missed,
- 23:54Speaker 5: but he's in the right place.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and one more chance tomorrow to hear those two together.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Uh maybe not for the last time ever, but I
- 24:02Speaker 1: mean certainly for the foreseeable future. It feels like and
- 24:06Speaker 1: Tony should have some type of We'll figure out some
- 24:09Speaker 1: things to get him on the air some ways, but
- 24:11Speaker 1: it just won't be reacting to a game on Monday
- 24:14Speaker 1: as we usually did.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:15Speaker 5: Well, I mean I think the plan right now is
- 24:18Speaker 5: to have a podcast with Tony so.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Well early still, you know, figure out the scheduling and everything.
- 24:26Speaker 5: Yeah, so he'll offer his thoughts, but just probably not
- 24:29Speaker 5: in the same vein as on that show.
- 24:32Speaker 2: We had some knockdown drag outs of that show. I
- 24:34Speaker 2: will tell you.
- 24:35Speaker 1: That sometimes you didn't. There was sometimes I had no
- 24:39Speaker 1: idea what Pete was gonna say after a game. Well, yeah,
- 24:42Speaker 1: sometimes it's pretty clear. Yeah, you know, and he's he
- 24:45Speaker 1: was good either way. That's what he does. Yes, he does.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So that's coming up tomorrow at four o'clock. We'll have
- 24:51Speaker 1: it right here from Indianapolis. Let's come back in a moment.
- 24:55Speaker 1: We'll wrap up this show. We get a lot coming
- 24:57Speaker 1: up today, a schedule of guests who will sit down
- 25:00Speaker 1: with us here at Radio Row.
- 25:01Speaker 6: And this is jaggs Am.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Welcome back.
- 25:19Speaker 1: It is jags Am from Indianapolis, the Indiana Convention Center,
- 25:23Speaker 1: the NFL Scouting Combine.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Final couple of moments. J P.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Shadwick, John Ozer, thanks to Judy Batista. A busy day
- 25:30Speaker 1: to day here on the road.
- 25:32Speaker 2: John.
- 25:32Speaker 1: We've got all kind of guests lined up. Mark Ross,
- 25:35Speaker 1: NFL Media, will join us here a little bit later.
- 25:37Speaker 1: We'll tape all these and get him out as the
- 25:39Speaker 1: day goes along. Charles Davis from like everywhere, CBS, NFL Media,
- 25:45Speaker 1: Sirius XM Radio.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I don't know what he doesn't do. We'll ask him that.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Coming up. Lant Zerline, NFL media draft.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Analyst, very good, get his thoughts on the NFL Draft
- 25:53Speaker 1: and the number five pick, especially Rhet Lewis NFL Media
- 25:57Speaker 1: went to college at Indiana just down the road. But
- 26:00Speaker 1: we'll get his thoughts on what's going on with the
- 26:01Speaker 1: Jaguars organization.
- 26:03Speaker 2: That's all coming up today.
- 26:04Speaker 1: We'll have a huddle up with Bucky Brooks that will
- 26:06Speaker 1: take a little later this afternoon.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Also looking forward to seeing Bucky. He's the mayor of
- 26:11Speaker 5: the combine.
- 26:12Speaker 2: He is, you know, I haven't seen him do other.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Take a number to talk to him one of those
- 26:17Speaker 5: things he's take and you wait.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Call his secretary and line up some time with Bucky
- 26:22Speaker 2: before to that, and you know.
- 26:24Speaker 5: As we wrap a few thoughts on yesterday with James
- 26:30Speaker 5: Gladstone and Liam Cohen, it was interesting to hear Gladstone
- 26:36Speaker 5: talk a little bit about how he plans to build
- 26:38Speaker 5: the roster. They don't typically get too deep into it,
- 26:42Speaker 5: but he clearly leaned toward the draft. I think they'll
- 26:47Speaker 5: be participants in free agency. I think over time they're
- 26:50Speaker 5: going to want to try to be a draft and
- 26:52Speaker 5: developed team. I liked that I would be in favor
- 26:58Speaker 5: of staying as far away from free He's as you possibly.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Can front line for you.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Yeah, big money, and it sounds like in the long
- 27:06Speaker 5: run they want to do that. I also thought it
- 27:09Speaker 5: was interesting that Doug Gladstone clearly thinks, like Liam Cohen,
- 27:13Speaker 5: that that this should be a much better team quickly.
- 27:17Speaker 5: He said a couple of times, I think you're gonna see,
- 27:20Speaker 5: uh the personnel used a little differently, get a little
- 27:23Speaker 5: more out of it.
- 27:24Speaker 6: Uh.
- 27:24Speaker 5: There's a feeling from these guys that you know, they're
- 27:26Speaker 5: not saying it and beating the table, but I think
- 27:30Speaker 5: they think they can get a lot better really quickly.
- 27:33Speaker 5: And uh, that's sort of confidence. I don't think it's false,
- 27:37Speaker 5: you know, I don't think it's overstating it. But there's
- 27:40Speaker 5: a feeling that they get they can get this turned
- 27:42Speaker 5: around quickly. There are holes in the roster, there's stuff
- 27:44Speaker 5: that has to be done, but I think I think
- 27:47Speaker 5: you're gonna see progress pretty quickly.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Great stuff, Johnny, A good show. Let's do it again
- 27:52Speaker 2: tomorrow or later today.
- 27:54Speaker 5: I'll be here.
- 27:54Speaker 1: It's John Oser. I'm JP Shatterick. Thanks for ourring tire
- 27:57Speaker 1: Krubos here and back in Jacksonville. And again thanks to
- 28:00Speaker 1: Judy Batista, NFL Media. Thanks to you for watching Jaggs
- 28:04Speaker 1: any
