Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Exposing The Core With JAKE DAVIES From OF LIMBO
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hello everybody. I am Jake Davies from of Limbo. I
- 0:22Speaker 1: guess I would be considered the lead singer, even though
- 0:25Speaker 1: my brother sings on a lot with me and uh
- 0:28Speaker 1: he lets me play guitar a little bit, but he'd
- 0:29Speaker 1: be the lead guitarist.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We're a rock band out of Long Beach, California, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: we just released.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Or are releasing tomorrow night.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I should say, I'm not sure when this airs, but
- 0:41Speaker 1: uh yeah, Thursday night.
- 0:43Speaker 2: In uh in America.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Our full unplugged album is going on to all of
- 0:48Speaker 1: the various streaming services.
- 0:52Speaker 3: As see Jack, Thanks for joining us today, pleasure brother.
- 0:57Speaker 3: As you say, it doesn't really matter what diight it
- 0:59Speaker 3: is or when it is, but your new album in
- 1:01Speaker 3: Unplugged is out toly eight eighth. It's so close, mate,
- 1:04Speaker 3: you can almost taste it.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Like Yeah, I feel exactly unstoked about it. Man.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It's always interesting with the music thing, because you know,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you make something and then it takes a long time
- 1:16Speaker 1: for it to finally get out there.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I think we probably wrapped recording on this one shit
- 1:22Speaker 2: like late last year, and.
- 1:25Speaker 1: We've been going the route of selling physical discs of
- 1:28Speaker 1: it first, because you know, streaming doesn't make you less
- 1:32Speaker 1: than a penny these days, and we feel like there's
- 1:35Speaker 1: enough of our audience that would pay for the pittance
- 1:40Speaker 1: of what a CD costs, would pay that for the
- 1:42Speaker 1: chance to get to hear it before everybody else does.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So that's kind of what our latest model of it
- 1:47Speaker 1: all is. And then we release the song by song
- 1:50Speaker 1: on Spotify and hopefully.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Do a video for every one of them. And then
- 1:53Speaker 2: now we've just about.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Got through the whole roll of Dex and the whole
- 1:57Speaker 1: thing's coming out tomorrow night.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Now, as a title suggests, the nine songs are all
- 2:02Speaker 3: acoustic renditions. So I believe I were better known for
- 2:05Speaker 3: your hard rock edge, mate, So why decided to do
- 2:07Speaker 3: an acoustic album.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, we grew up just absolutely adoring the MTV Unplugged era,
- 2:14Speaker 1: especially the Allison Chains. I must have listened to that
- 2:17Speaker 1: that album performer, that live album thousands of times in
- 2:21Speaker 1: my life, so we've always really liked it. And there
- 2:25Speaker 1: was a sort of a stint in time when the
- 2:28Speaker 1: electric band, the electric version of our band wasn't able
- 2:32Speaker 1: to perform. Drummer was away stuff like that, so we
- 2:34Speaker 1: just started jamming with our friend Jason, who used to
- 2:38Speaker 1: be famous for being in the Butcher Babies years ago,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and I started jamming with Jason just doing sort of
- 2:44Speaker 1: acoustic stuff, and we just really got a taste for
- 2:47Speaker 1: it because as much fun as the live electric rock
- 2:52Speaker 1: and roll party stuff is that we do, there's a
- 2:55Speaker 1: real romance to playing the acoustic stuff because you know,
- 2:59Speaker 1: you got a lot more room to hit, more emotion
- 3:03Speaker 1: and sing a little bit more than belting it out
- 3:08Speaker 1: constantly like I have to do it.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It's the electric stuff.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Out of the nine track, six originals and three covins.
- 3:16Speaker 3: So firstly we'll start with the originals. Mate, are they
- 3:19Speaker 3: all completely new songs or are they acoustic versions of
- 3:21Speaker 3: older ones?
- 3:23Speaker 2: Jeez, that's a good question.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I think the only older one that's on there is
- 3:30Speaker 1: the live version of Little Darlin. That was one we
- 3:34Speaker 1: had from our very first little demo CD. But it's
- 3:37Speaker 1: really come to gain a new life these days. When
- 3:41Speaker 1: I think when we first made it, I didn't do
- 3:44Speaker 1: the funny we're kind of voice like I do now
- 3:47Speaker 1: on it. And yeah, it's it's come almost like a
- 3:50Speaker 1: Louis Armstrong mixed with God was his name?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Guy? Where's the Matthew Doctor?
- 3:59Speaker 1: A little Where's the Fedora, It'll.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Come to me, Oh the old man, anyway, It'll come
- 4:08Speaker 4: to me. I think that's the only one that's a
- 4:10Speaker 4: bit of an older song. All the rest of them
- 4:12Speaker 4: are yeah, ran new, brand spanking new.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And the album opens with the flamenco strains of a Strata,
- 4:18Speaker 3: which is a beautiful piece and sets it to nicely
- 4:21Speaker 3: for what's to follow. So is that why it was
- 4:23Speaker 3: chosen to lead the album just because it does sit?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like if you put an instrumental song
- 4:29Speaker 1: like in the middle, it feels a bit weird, and
- 4:33Speaker 1: it's a short song, it's sort of felt like, yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 1: set the tone kind of song. And that was one
- 4:39Speaker 1: that I wrote when I was like thirteen years old.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I think when I was a kid and Luke, I'd
- 4:45Speaker 1: always sort of dicked around with it, playing it on
- 4:47Speaker 1: acoustic guitar at parties or whatever the hell wherever we're
- 4:50Speaker 1: at when we're drinking and not having a serious performance.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'll always dick around and play that one. And Luke
- 4:55Speaker 1: had the idea, do we should put that on.
- 4:57Speaker 2: The unplugged album. I was like, oh, okay, cool, So.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my my old old school teenage song. Made
- 5:04Speaker 1: it made it into the evolving Boffold. I was very
- 5:07Speaker 1: honored when Luke offered that, right.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I didn't. It's really brave starting off with an instrumental
- 5:12Speaker 3: to you don't hear it very often, but it's also
- 5:15Speaker 3: very effective on me. Could just grab you straight up
- 5:18Speaker 3: on me. It was a really perfect way to kick
- 5:19Speaker 3: things off.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean another other cool thing about it
- 5:23Speaker 1: instrumental is like I know for myself, I will instantly
- 5:29Speaker 1: dismiss a band if I don't like what the vocalist
- 5:31Speaker 1: sounds like. And I've got very taste, you know, like
- 5:35Speaker 1: it could be the greatest greatest music song ever, like musically,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but then if some guy comes in with a wa.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Whin any kind of voice, I'm fucking I'm just out,
- 5:44Speaker 2: you know.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So if somebody doesn't like our like our singing on
- 5:49Speaker 1: the rest of the record, well you've got astrata.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You can listen to that one. I was mentioned. There's
- 5:55Speaker 3: also three covers on Unplugged, so I want to run
- 5:57Speaker 3: through them one at a time and tell us why
- 5:59Speaker 3: you chose that particular song to cover and how you
- 6:01Speaker 3: reworked in your own image. So we'll start with the
- 6:04Speaker 3: Van Hayland cover finish what you started.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Van Halen one was a suggestion from Jason Klein, our
- 6:11Speaker 1: fretless bass wizard that plays on all these unplugged songs
- 6:14Speaker 1: with us. I love Van Halen, but I'm not that
- 6:19Speaker 1: well versed in the catalog.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And Luke knew the song instantly, so.
- 6:24Speaker 1: They played it for me and I was like, oh, yeah,
- 6:26Speaker 1: this is cool. I can do a decent Sammy range
- 6:29Speaker 1: sort of voice, and yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 2: It was just a sort of a.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Completely different flavor from the rest of the songs that
- 6:36Speaker 1: we've got on the album.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's much more upbeat and bright.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And we're actually friends with Andrew Hagar, Sammy Hagar's son,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and he said that he sent it on to his dad,
- 6:48Speaker 1: showed his dad, and dad gave it the thumbs up,
- 6:50Speaker 1: so that it was great. And actually before before we
- 6:53Speaker 1: finished it, I told Andrew that we were doing it,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and he went to Pops and asked him, and or
- 6:58Speaker 1: told him about it, and Pop said, I've got one
- 7:00Speaker 1: piece of advice for them, do a lot of cocaine
- 7:03Speaker 1: and get really horny.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I thought that was hilarious. So I don't know.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I don't know if we fulfill that in the creation
- 7:10Speaker 1: of it, but we definitely.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Put our own little spin to it.
- 7:13Speaker 3: And so no, I then you gotta have a radio
- 7:17Speaker 3: head straight spirit.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that one.
- 7:20Speaker 1: That one was a me suggestion. I've always loved that song,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and I just feel, as much as I love Tommy
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yorke's vocals, he's got this beautiful falsetto easing in and
- 7:31Speaker 1: out of it thing that he does. It always felt
- 7:34Speaker 1: like a song to me that could translate into having
- 7:37Speaker 1: a bigger Cornell all kind of vocal over it. You
- 7:41Speaker 1: know how Cornell does those amazing vocal performances over acoustic
- 7:46Speaker 1: songs like Seasons or Hope and Promise Fade. I just
- 7:50Speaker 1: always thought that Street Spirit would lend itself to doing
- 7:54Speaker 1: something like that.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And we tried it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: With me doing it a few ways and it was
- 8:00Speaker 1: pretty good, but it was a bit yelly and it
- 8:02Speaker 1: didn't quite hit what I wanted.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And uh, then we came up with the idea of
- 8:05Speaker 2: getting our.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Our dear friend, the Lucas Holter from Whiskey and the
- 8:09Speaker 1: Wolves to come sing on it. And he just brought
- 8:12Speaker 1: over a bottle of whiskey, belt it out like five takes,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and at the fifth take we were just like on
- 8:18Speaker 1: the floor like laughing because it was so fucking good.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Me and Luke were just hysterics about it, how amazing
- 8:26Speaker 1: it was. So yeah, we used this, We used this
- 8:28Speaker 1: final take pretty much front to back, and that's what's
- 8:31Speaker 1: that's what's on the final recording.
- 8:33Speaker 2: He blew it away.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Ah. So then the third one is a live version
- 8:37Speaker 3: of the Allison Chane's classic Down in a Hole, which
- 8:40Speaker 3: incidentally is a really fucking good, good version too bright gat.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Thanks many, Well, that's that's one that I don't think
- 8:46Speaker 1: we took too much creative license with. You can't improve
- 8:50Speaker 1: upon perfection of Land and Jerry. So uh, we pretty
- 8:53Speaker 1: much we've been planned that song, me and Luke, just
- 8:57Speaker 1: just two acoustic guitars with each other for years years.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It's a great a great learning song, as almost any
- 9:03Speaker 1: Alison chainsong is great learning song for harmonies, and often
- 9:08Speaker 1: me and Luke will.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Choose to switch who's doing the lane and who's doing
- 9:12Speaker 2: the Jerry.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It's just a great, great exercise to you know, keep
- 9:15Speaker 1: your chops up in the harmony world. And while we've
- 9:19Speaker 1: been playing it live in the acoustic unplugged sets, people
- 9:22Speaker 1: just always respond great to it. It's a phenomenal song
- 9:26Speaker 1: and everybody, everybody that likes rock music loves it. So
- 9:30Speaker 1: we figured, uh yeah, throw our a little live version
- 9:34Speaker 1: on the.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Album, as we said before. But I like Oblimbo a
- 9:38Speaker 3: better known for being a hard rock band. So I
- 9:41Speaker 3: think it's a great idea you guys doing an acoustic album.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But was there an album of risk there at all?
- 9:45Speaker 3: You know? I like that people get the wrong impression
- 9:48Speaker 3: that was the all I heard of your music.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Well that's a good question.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I've never really thought that someone might hear the unplugged
- 9:57Speaker 1: stuff and dismiss us as the whole I actually more
- 10:00Speaker 1: I thought it would be the opposite way, that people
- 10:02Speaker 1: would see the unplugged stuff and then they dive deeper
- 10:05Speaker 1: into our catalog. Here's some of nothing but now stuff
- 10:09Speaker 1: where I'm screaming my ass off and like, what the
- 10:11Speaker 1: fuck is this? I thought it was getting some beautiful
- 10:14Speaker 1: soft acoustic music.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Well, I'll think it's right. It's a good introduction to
- 10:19Speaker 3: the band and say it is well known that ZA
- 10:23Speaker 3: a rock band. Jay, So I alreckon kados to you guys.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Made good on you for doing it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Thanks brother. Yeah, it was really intent. Initially we thought.
- 10:31Speaker 1: We were gonna like I think we started it in
- 10:33Speaker 1: January last year, and we're like, oh, yeah, it'll be
- 10:35Speaker 1: done by April. Just a quick thing, just to get
- 10:38Speaker 1: these songs out of us, you know, and then we'll
- 10:40Speaker 1: move back to all of these electric songs that we
- 10:43Speaker 1: still have to get properly recorded and put out there,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and then sure enough we get sucked into like you know,
- 10:49Speaker 1: fine tuning it and getting it exactly.
- 10:51Speaker 2: As we want. We're originally thinking it is just gonna.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Be a live album pretty much the whole way through,
- 10:56Speaker 1: like the.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Nirvana MTV one. But then as some of the songs.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Were or being created as we were recording them, you know,
- 11:04Speaker 1: like demoing them as we recorded the final version, we
- 11:07Speaker 1: just kept adding more bells and whistles and you know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: really exploring what the song could be rather than just
- 11:14Speaker 1: what it would be if it was us sitting there
- 11:16Speaker 1: and just banging it out with two guitars and a bass.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I get it. On future albums, are you gonna
- 11:22Speaker 3: rework these acoustic ones into the electric album or were
- 11:25Speaker 3: they just going to stay as a centipece ACCUSI.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I would say if there was one that might make
- 11:31Speaker 1: it onto a future album electric version, it would probably
- 11:36Speaker 1: be something real. I've got a real soft spot for
- 11:40Speaker 1: that one, and I know Luke does too. I'm not
- 11:43Speaker 1: sure in my head what the drum beat would be
- 11:45Speaker 1: to it, yet that's always going to be the biggest sort.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Of you know, will it sink or will it swim things?
- 11:52Speaker 1: If you can find a drum beat that really feels
- 11:55Speaker 1: right with it, I think, And that's the one that
- 11:58Speaker 1: I would say has the most potential of of being
- 12:00Speaker 1: a electric song in the future.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yourself and Luke were both born and raised here in
- 12:07Speaker 3: Australia in Melbourne, Mate, before taking the gamble of moving overseas.
- 12:10Speaker 3: So tell us how and why you left home in
- 12:13Speaker 3: search of music success in America.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Well, you got it almost right, So I was.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I was actually born in America, and then Mom married
- 12:23Speaker 1: in Aussie when I was seven years old, and then
- 12:26Speaker 1: after living in Melbourne with Mom and dad, they created
- 12:31Speaker 1: the Prodigal Sun. Lukey popped out of Mom and then
- 12:34Speaker 1: we grew up. Yeah, living in Melbourne for shit most
- 12:38Speaker 1: of our most of our lives. And when I was
- 12:40Speaker 1: about twenty three, I decided, after finishing Union whatever, that
- 12:46Speaker 1: I was going to go move back to America because
- 12:49Speaker 1: I don't know it seemed like a big adventure and
- 12:53Speaker 1: we had family here already living in Long Reach.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So I wasn't too much of.
- 12:57Speaker 1: A you know, throwing a throwing myself to the wolves
- 13:01Speaker 1: kind of thing.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I had a bit of a base here.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And then yeah, after living here for a while, Luke
- 13:05Speaker 1: Luke graduated high school and started playing music together did
- 13:09Speaker 1: and we just had so much fun we didn't want
- 13:11Speaker 1: to stop.
- 13:12Speaker 2: So that's where we are now.
- 13:14Speaker 3: And have you come back to Australia to play as
- 13:17Speaker 3: Blue Bag?
- 13:18Speaker 2: We have never played in Australia. Actually, i'd love to.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I'm not sure how that would all work, but I'm
- 13:26Speaker 2: sure if if they build it, we will come. We
- 13:30Speaker 2: did tour with wolf Mother one time out here. That
- 13:33Speaker 2: was cool.
- 13:34Speaker 1: But yeah, I'd love to go back and jump on
- 13:36Speaker 1: a wolf Mother tour in Australia.
- 13:38Speaker 2: That'd be great.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Yeah, speaking of tourm Bro, you've got some live shows
- 13:42Speaker 3: coming up, so tell us about them.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got Viper Room on the eighth.
- 13:47Speaker 1: And the thing about Viper Room is every every year
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'll see a new article saying that it's going away
- 13:53Speaker 1: and that they're turning it into apartments or something. And
- 13:56Speaker 1: luckily it hasn't happened yet, but every time we get
- 13:59Speaker 1: a viper room show booked, I play it like it's
- 14:02Speaker 1: my absolute laughs because you never know what it might be,
- 14:04Speaker 1: the actual last one we.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Ever do it by a broom. It's a real Hollywood
- 14:09Speaker 2: home for us.
- 14:10Speaker 1: We love the people that work there, we love everything
- 14:13Speaker 1: about it, the history of the venue. It's a great,
- 14:16Speaker 1: great experience every time we play there. So that's the
- 14:19Speaker 1: big one that's coming up.
- 14:21Speaker 2: There's a quite a large venue out here in Orange
- 14:25Speaker 2: County called the Observatory that's actually where we played with
- 14:28Speaker 2: Wolf Leather.
- 14:29Speaker 1: But we're gonna be playing that one, I think in
- 14:32Speaker 1: early October and then yeah, I'm not allowed to say
- 14:37Speaker 1: the specifics of it, but early next year, we've got
- 14:40Speaker 1: a tour that is slowly coming into formation under a
- 14:45Speaker 1: much larger band than we are, So we're very excited
- 14:47Speaker 1: about that.
- 14:48Speaker 2: We might be out of the road for like two
- 14:50Speaker 2: months or something. I'm really really pumped.
- 14:52Speaker 1: For that one, but camps can't let the cat out
- 14:54Speaker 1: of the bag yet until they actually.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Nail it, nail it in and we know for.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Sure we're doing it, because I wouldn't don't get anybody
- 15:00Speaker 1: excited that we're coming to there.
- 15:03Speaker 2: If we're not.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Going, where's the best place for people to to get
- 15:07Speaker 3: your musical keep up with what you're doing?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Well, YouTube has all of our stuff. Every one of
- 15:15Speaker 1: the streaming services have all of our stuff. But I
- 15:18Speaker 1: guess if you want to connect with us in our
- 15:20Speaker 1: daily lives and see everything as it comes into the pike,
- 15:23Speaker 1: go to our Instagram.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Did we We stay pretty active.
- 15:26Speaker 1: On that thing, posting every other day whatever and doing
- 15:30Speaker 1: countdowns for whatever the hell.
- 15:32Speaker 2: The next video is that's coming out and the next
- 15:34Speaker 2: song that's coming out.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But yeah, we're on all the streaming services, Spotify, you
- 15:38Speaker 1: name it, collecting our our royalty checks of two cents.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Enough to pay for the ten in this can. Right,
- 15:51Speaker 2: it'll be fun, you go.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Jacob starting a new section called Off FIGHTO Bomb, So basically,
- 15:55Speaker 3: I'll troll three social media before we jumped on the phone,
- 15:58Speaker 3: I found a few that I want to know a
- 16:00Speaker 3: little bit more about. So off for this one.
- 16:04Speaker 1: What that was that was their last tour? I'm glad
- 16:08Speaker 1: you chose out one instead of the one with all
- 16:09Speaker 1: our butt showing. Maybe maybe that was the last tour
- 16:14Speaker 1: with a faster pussy Cat.
- 16:16Speaker 2: We decided to treat ourselves on that night to.
- 16:20Speaker 1: An actual proper hotel room instead of crashing in the van.
- 16:24Speaker 1: And uh yeah, we found ourselves a nice little jacuzzi
- 16:28Speaker 1: to wind down in and had a red light and
- 16:29Speaker 1: it looks like we're bathing in blood like Slayer.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I'm gonna say hopefully it is a red light. Otherwise
- 16:36Speaker 3: whoever's fought and has got some serious issues.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and I promise we are. We do have board
- 16:43Speaker 1: shorts under there. We are not completely naked.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Now.
- 16:47Speaker 3: The other one, I think you've just sortat of given
- 16:49Speaker 3: the given give them the way rather, but has something
