- 1:08Speaker 1: know if you can hear that. My stomach is actually growling.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I am so hungry and this probably not the episode
- 1:15Speaker 1: to listen to if that's the case. Welcome to NFL explain.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, she's a d D Kickablalla, I'm feeling
- 1:20Speaker 1: very bad for you. The Cereal is not cutting it
- 1:23Speaker 1: from this morning, and people are like, why are you
- 1:25Speaker 1: talking about food right now? Well, that is actually today's
- 1:27Speaker 1: episode how to Feed an NFL team. We should be
- 1:31Speaker 1: doing the episode on how to feed broadcasters. Although I
- 1:34Speaker 1: think I'm the only person add that needs to listen
- 1:36Speaker 1: to that episode because it looks like you're fueled up
- 1:39Speaker 1: for the show. I feel like that's a knock right there. Well, no,
- 1:42Speaker 1: it's very rare for me to actually miss a meal
- 1:44Speaker 1: a but b I do eat on the run. That's
- 1:47Speaker 1: why there are crumbs everywhere. That's why you actually just
- 1:50Speaker 1: saw my daughter picking things to eat off of my desk,
- 1:54Speaker 1: because there are always things to eat at my desk.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Well done. It's a good strategy eat on the run.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You're burning the calories while you're in taking them. Although
- 2:01Speaker 1: I don't know if that's the exact way to do it,
- 2:03Speaker 1: but for some NFL players maybe that's their strategy. In fact,
- 2:06Speaker 1: when it comes to snacks during the games. That's actually
- 2:09Speaker 1: something we're gonna learn a little bit later in this
- 2:11Speaker 1: episode that I found out based off of one of
- 2:13Speaker 1: your conversations. But I'm excited for today's episode of d
- 2:17Speaker 1: D because food, I think is something that is just
- 2:20Speaker 1: it's always on my mind, and I think I'm not
- 2:22Speaker 1: the only person that would agree with that assessment. Well,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and it's not just what's on someone's mind. It's a
- 2:27Speaker 1: cultural thing. Often. You know, when NFL teams go on
- 2:30Speaker 1: the road, they do their best to maintain their same
- 2:34Speaker 1: general food options, but most teams will offer something that's
- 2:40Speaker 1: very particular to where they are. So, for instance, I'll
- 2:43Speaker 1: give you as an example, when the Cleveland Browns go
- 2:45Speaker 1: to Baltimore, there's always crab cakes on the menu in
- 2:48Speaker 1: addition to everything else that is usually available. When the
- 2:51Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns go to Cincinnati Chili, you'll get some Skyline
- 2:54Speaker 1: Chili in addition to everything else. So food is about places,
- 2:58Speaker 1: Food is about culture, food is about family, and to
- 3:01Speaker 1: some people, food is only about sustenance. I mean, we'll
- 3:05Speaker 1: get into this later, but I talked to the head
- 3:09Speaker 1: of nutrition and the head dietitian with the Cleveland Browns,
- 3:11Speaker 1: Katie Messick, and she told me that there are guys
- 3:13Speaker 1: that will eat the same exact thing every single day
- 3:20Speaker 1: creature of habit my routine. I would be one of
- 3:23Speaker 1: those people that Katie is referencing, not to mention sis, Yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I do eat a lot of the same foods pretty
- 3:30Speaker 1: boredom out of that, like food boredom, that's a thing. Yeah,
- 3:33Speaker 1: And I'll break it up. I don't eat the same
- 3:35Speaker 1: thing literally every day, but generally speaking, I'm I kind
- 3:38Speaker 1: of fall into a certain path, Like I won't eat
- 3:40Speaker 1: spicy foods because upsets my stomach, and I won't do
- 3:43Speaker 1: that on a show day, right, like just kind of
- 3:45Speaker 1: like game day. I would imagine a lot of these
- 3:47Speaker 1: NFL players, In fact, you had an opportunity to talk
- 3:50Speaker 1: to one and Joe Thomas, who I don't think missed
- 3:53Speaker 1: many meals when he was playing three d plus pounds
- 3:56Speaker 1: on the offensive line, Like those dudes probably are eating
- 3:59Speaker 1: for sustenance and maybe less about the taste. Well, and
- 4:01Speaker 1: Show is going to tell us that eating actually became
- 4:04Speaker 1: part of his job, because Joe was one of the
- 4:07Speaker 1: roughly let's call it, of NFL players that actually had
- 4:11Speaker 1: to eat to maintain their weight. And I will tell you, Mike,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I took a major hit for the team and talking
- 4:17Speaker 1: to Joe because if he sat there and talking about
- 4:19Speaker 1: how painful and brutal it was to have to eat
- 4:22Speaker 1: a whole pizza and how terrible his life was that
- 4:25Speaker 1: he had to eat ice cream every night. I really
- 4:28Speaker 1: kind of just wanted to to know, Yeah, the ice
- 4:31Speaker 1: cream thing would not be an issue for me. I
- 4:34Speaker 1: do think we should set the stage here because once again,
- 4:37Speaker 1: your conversation with Joe Thomas is coming up, and I
- 4:39Speaker 1: think it'll be fascinating to hear what he had to
- 4:41Speaker 1: tell you about what it was like to force food
- 4:44Speaker 1: down his mouth, to make sure that he was maintaining.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Not to mention what it's like for a lot of chefs,
- 4:48Speaker 1: but I think in a world where maybe not everyone
- 4:51Speaker 1: is doing the calorie counting, I just wanted to set
- 4:53Speaker 1: the stage for people a duty on what generally is
- 4:56Speaker 1: recommended for what I will call general population or not
- 4:59Speaker 1: pro athletes, generally speaking from a female and a male perspective,
- 5:03Speaker 1: females roughly about two tho calories a day, males hundred
- 5:08Speaker 1: calories a day. I am certainly above that number, which
- 5:11Speaker 1: is probably not necessarily a good thing. But I think
- 5:14Speaker 1: the other thing to highlight here a D is the
- 5:16Speaker 1: type of athlete that you are. And I know genetics
- 5:18Speaker 1: plays a factor here, but an NFL players probably doing
- 5:21Speaker 1: it a little bit differently than a swimmer. And I
- 5:24Speaker 1: automatically think back to a guy like Michael Phelps, who
- 5:27Speaker 1: clearly is one of the greatest athletes this country has
- 5:30Speaker 1: ever seen, and when he was training for the Beijing Olympics,
- 5:33Speaker 1: that is eating ten thousand calories a day, ten thousand
- 5:37Speaker 1: calories a day, and he was sitting with eight percent
- 5:40Speaker 1: body fat because he's burning a thousand calories every hour
- 5:43Speaker 1: that he's working out. NFL players generally a d D
- 5:46Speaker 1: sitting in that three to five thousand range, unless we're
- 5:49Speaker 1: talking about it Joe Thomas on the offensive line, maybe
- 5:52Speaker 1: up to six thousand. In fact, even some of your
- 5:54Speaker 1: bigger guys or six thousand. Katie Messick was telling me
- 5:57Speaker 1: that you know a dB who might have a ridiculously
- 6:01Speaker 1: fast metabolism, A linebacker room might have a fast metabolism,
- 6:04Speaker 1: may have to get to five thousand calories a day,
- 6:07Speaker 1: but it's almost more important whoever you are, whether you're
- 6:09Speaker 1: Michael Phelps, whether you're Michael Yam, whether you are I
- 6:13Speaker 1: can't think of another Michael. Why can I not think
- 6:15Speaker 1: of another Michael Jordan's. I mean, first of all, that
- 6:18Speaker 1: is the one I was thinking of. But at this point,
- 6:20Speaker 1: does Michael Jordan really matter like what he eats. This
- 6:25Speaker 1: is a random aside and I'm totally digressing, But you
- 6:28Speaker 1: remember hearing that story that he drank eight beers after
- 6:31Speaker 1: every game for him, like he lost so many fluids
- 6:33Speaker 1: that he just down the beers got a high trade.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Once again, that's probably my post show diet. I'm not
- 6:38Speaker 1: eating spicy foods before the show, but after, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 1: mine's usually a tall glass of wine for clearly not
- 6:44Speaker 1: going to ever get to go you together, because I
- 6:46Speaker 1: love spicy food. I need spicy food. I need some
- 6:48Speaker 1: spice in every meal. Yeah, I eat pretty bland. You know.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Actually that's an interesting thing because how about this, Like
- 6:54Speaker 1: even from an athletic standpoint, there's been a push recently,
- 6:57Speaker 1: Aditi and I don't know if you got into this
- 6:59Speaker 1: with Katie about this, but just people who don't eat meat.
- 7:02Speaker 1: You got the vegetarians, you got pescterian, you've got the
- 7:06Speaker 1: people who like it when it's bloody on their plate.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And it's more probably wrong me. There's a strategy and
- 7:12Speaker 1: a philosophy behind what people are consuming as they're preparing
- 7:16Speaker 1: for workouts or just their games. And that's what we're
- 7:20Speaker 1: seeing now as more NFL teams are taking a greater
- 7:24Speaker 1: interest in nutrition, is that you don't necessarily you know,
- 7:28Speaker 1: I'm a vegetarian. I don't like people telling me, oh, well,
- 7:31Speaker 1: how do you get your protein? Obviously I get my protein.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I've been getting my protein. I'm a healthy person and
- 7:35Speaker 1: I have healthy children and whatever. It's this idea that
- 7:38Speaker 1: you can cater to what you like, be it spicy
- 7:42Speaker 1: food or not, and still get the necessary fuel. And
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's important that you put things in your body at
- 7:51Speaker 1: certain times so that they can be used for certain
- 7:54Speaker 1: things and that the things that you put in your
- 7:56Speaker 1: body are serving a purpose. And I think that that's
- 8:00Speaker 1: what athletes are really focusing on more. Now, why do
- 8:03Speaker 1: you eat a banana pre practice? Why do you have
- 8:06Speaker 1: that shake post practice? Those are the things that are
- 8:09Speaker 1: really going into what they eat now. I'm so glad
- 8:12Speaker 1: you said that you get annoyed that people ask how
- 8:15Speaker 1: you get your protein. I was about to ask you
- 8:16Speaker 1: that question, so mental note, Glad you brought that up
- 8:19Speaker 1: and I did that off at the past. Well, because
- 8:21Speaker 1: just think about it. I don't know if people necessarily
- 8:23Speaker 1: think about non meat now, certainly I get it. You,
- 8:26Speaker 1: I don't know if you eat fish or kind of
- 8:28Speaker 1: where you land on the springs laos Greek yogurt. You
- 8:32Speaker 1: know how much protein Greek yogurt has. No, I'm not
- 8:34Speaker 1: a yogurt guy unless it's frozen coming out of the
- 8:36Speaker 1: machine and I throw M and m's on top. Oh,
- 8:39Speaker 1: when I used Greek yogurt, I mean I don't eat
- 8:41Speaker 1: sour cream. I use Greek yogurt. I don't need mayo.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I use Greek yogurt. I mean you can use Greek
- 8:47Speaker 1: yogurt for anything. Basically, I got a cookbook for you.
- 8:49Speaker 1: When we're done, Mike, I'm going to send you this cookbook.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It's how to make anything using Greek yogurt. I definitely
- 8:55Speaker 1: will scan that adity because no one boils water better
- 8:58Speaker 1: than I do. If that expands my cooking prowess. I
- 9:01Speaker 1: use the phone like no one's business and toward Dash
- 9:04Speaker 1: and ubert Eats and all those there wonderful apps on
- 9:07Speaker 1: my phone to make sure that I am getting my protein,
- 9:09Speaker 1: even if it's not coming in the form of yogurt.

- 10:42Speaker 1: the head of nutrition and the head dietitian with the
- 10:45Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns, told me that there are guys that will
- 10:47Speaker 1: eat the same exact thing every day. I want to
- 10:51Speaker 1: actually ask you this question just as it pertains to
- 10:53Speaker 1: your conversation with Katie. Just covering a lot of college
- 10:56Speaker 1: football over the last few years, I can't help but
- 10:58Speaker 1: notice how a lot of the dietitians and people on
- 11:01Speaker 1: college campuses have felt for the last ten years or
- 11:04Speaker 1: so that they're head of the NFL when it comes
- 11:07Speaker 1: to nutrition. Which is kind of shocking, right because you
- 11:10Speaker 1: think about the millions and billions of dollars towards professional athletes,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and I don't know if they're necessarily wrong. Well, it's
- 11:17Speaker 1: actually not shocking if you think about this. And Mike,
- 11:20Speaker 1: this is where I get to say, as a mother,
- 11:23Speaker 1: if I leave my children with a babysitter, I always
- 11:27Speaker 1: ask how did they eat? What did they eat? So
- 11:30Speaker 1: think about it. If you are a parent dropping off
- 11:33Speaker 1: your eighteen year old son to college, aren't you going
- 11:36Speaker 1: to be concerned what he eats? And this is great
- 11:39Speaker 1: because Katie actually came to the Brown six years ago
- 11:43Speaker 1: from Florida State, and she's hypothesized that This is why
- 11:48Speaker 1: the major college programs have sort of been ahead of
- 11:51Speaker 1: the curve of the NFL IS because all these parents
- 11:54Speaker 1: were coming in on recruiting trips and every parent worries
- 11:57Speaker 1: about what their kid is eating. And that's why these
- 12:01Speaker 1: programs have to sort of focus on that and think
- 12:03Speaker 1: about that. And also those are formative years where you're
- 12:06Speaker 1: kind of helping set habits and practices such as eating,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, four times a day, or if you're in
- 12:13Speaker 1: training camp, you should be eating six times a day,
- 12:15Speaker 1: things like that. I talked to a multiple coaches about this,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and some of them would complain about training table at
- 12:20Speaker 1: the college side and saying, look at what's happening in pick.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I'll just say the sec because I covered the Pack twelve.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Look at what they're feeding their dudes compared to what
- 12:28Speaker 1: we're feeding our guys you switch in development. I would
- 12:31Speaker 1: imagine that there are, depending on your position, this idea
- 12:35Speaker 1: of maintaining or actually gaining weight, and that affecting what
- 12:40Speaker 1: some of these dietitians are putting together. Well sure, but
- 12:42Speaker 1: I think that the whole idea is that you have
- 12:44Speaker 1: to have options for everyone. You know, you can't send
- 12:46Speaker 1: home anybody feeling hungry or unsatisfied or unheard. But when
- 12:51Speaker 1: you feed a football team at their home facility, you're
- 12:54Speaker 1: also feeding another I don't know, a hundred and fifty
- 12:57Speaker 1: potentially two hundred other team employees, be their coaches or staff,
- 13:02Speaker 1: or just front office executives, marketing people whoever, or they
- 13:06Speaker 1: maybe when you're on the road, you're also feeding a
- 13:08Speaker 1: lot of support staff. So you are looking to not
- 13:13Speaker 1: only satisfy but fuel all sorts of people who have
- 13:16Speaker 1: different jobs and need to do different things. And I
- 13:20Speaker 1: think when it comes down to it, healthy eating is
- 13:22Speaker 1: healthy eating. It's just the quantities in which you do it.
- 13:26Speaker 1: What again, we keep saying sort of the same thing,
- 13:28Speaker 1: the same specific thing. What are you trying to do
- 13:31Speaker 1: at what point of the day? You know, Like I
- 13:34Speaker 1: love to say, Mike, um, I've this is one of
- 13:38Speaker 1: the very crazy things about me. I have like recently
- 13:41Speaker 1: just stopped loving breakfast food. So I don't understand, like,
- 13:44Speaker 1: why can't I eat lunch food at breakfast I know exactly,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but you know what, like I just I'm not into
- 13:49Speaker 1: break breakfast there, so I'd rather eat lunch food at
- 13:52Speaker 1: breakfast food. And it's this idea of what difference does
- 13:56Speaker 1: it make? What difference does it make what time you're
- 13:58Speaker 1: eating it. If you're going to eat your meal and
- 14:01Speaker 1: then have a cookie, does it really matter if you
- 14:03Speaker 1: eat the cookie before you eat your meal, as long
- 14:04Speaker 1: as you finish your meal. It's sort of that question.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But when you are an elite athlete and you are
- 14:11Speaker 1: fueling your body for performance, it actually does matter what
- 14:16Speaker 1: you eat when you eat it. But look, I got
- 14:18Speaker 1: a ton of super fun facts from Katie, so let's
- 14:21Speaker 1: throw some of them out there, all right, Mike, Let's
- 14:23Speaker 1: get into some of my favorite part of NFL explained.
- 14:27Speaker 1: And that's when we get to play the quiz game.
- 14:29Speaker 1: You ready to the music Cleveland Browns, And we chose
- 14:37Speaker 1: the Cleveland Browns because you know, they did have a
- 14:39Speaker 1: tremendous year and they did perform above expectation. And because
- 14:43Speaker 1: Joe Thomas spent his entire career with the Browns, why
- 14:45Speaker 1: not let's go to the Cleveland Browns. And because they're
- 14:47Speaker 1: really fabulous to work with, and so it was easy
- 14:51Speaker 1: to get someone on the phone. Here we go. How
- 14:54Speaker 1: many pounds of peanut butter did the Cleveland Browns go
- 14:57Speaker 1: through every week of the season? Okay, so I'm thinking snacks,
- 15:03Speaker 1: peanut butter and jelly. I'm thinking about all the shakes
- 15:06Speaker 1: that they were probably consuming. Because I'm a big chocolate
- 15:11Speaker 1: way peanut butter shaped type of person. So how many
- 15:13Speaker 1: pounds every week? Uh, I don't know, pounds higher? Lower? Okay,
- 15:24Speaker 1: this is a kid I play with my son. Actually,
- 15:27Speaker 1: thirty five pounds of peters? Okay? How many pounds of
- 15:30Speaker 1: strawberries a week? How many pounds of strawberries? I put
- 15:34Speaker 1: that at a higher number, So let's say fifty, keep
- 15:37Speaker 1: going way higher. Four hundred pounds of strawberries. How many
- 15:45Speaker 1: pounds of chicken a week? Chicken has got to be
- 15:49Speaker 1: just an insane number because I would imagine most people
- 15:53Speaker 1: on football teams are not vegan. You probably want to
- 15:56Speaker 1: go chicken as opposed to red meat. Generally speaking, I'm
- 16:00Speaker 1: trying to flash back in my head on some of
- 16:02Speaker 1: the conversations I have people on college campuses, and then
- 16:05Speaker 1: just make that number high for such a good stall.
- 16:08Speaker 1: When you don't have an answer, you just sit here
- 16:11Speaker 1: like this should be a lightning round. Come on, the
- 16:13Speaker 1: pounds of chicken. Let's just we'll go three hundred seven
- 16:20Speaker 1: seven hundred pounds of chicken a week to feed the
- 16:22Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns organization last year. It's a lot of birds.
- 16:26Speaker 1: You know what, here's another little chicken nugget and that
- 16:28Speaker 1: Katie Massik told me, well done. How many chicken nuggets
- 16:32Speaker 1: do they eat? Well? Chick fil A is one of
- 16:34Speaker 1: those treat meals that apparently they really enjoyed. But I asked,
- 16:38Speaker 1: what are the two favorite meals? Like, what are the
- 16:39Speaker 1: meals that you know guys are coming back for seconds,
- 16:41Speaker 1: whether they should or they shouldn't. What are the ones
- 16:43Speaker 1: that they might be packing up to take home? Number
- 16:46Speaker 1: one is general sALS chicken and number two is what
- 16:49Speaker 1: I am actually cooking for my family tonight. Tacos. Oh, okay,
- 16:53Speaker 1: we eat tacos once a week in this house. Yeah.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I ordered tacos at least once a week, and my
- 16:57Speaker 1: house so yeah, we're on the same diet plan. I
- 17:00Speaker 1: like it all right, since we did peanut butter, Can
- 17:03Speaker 1: I give you a fun peanut butter fact too, Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 1: of course. Okay, So the Browns make about fifty peanut
- 17:07Speaker 1: butter and jelly sandwiches a day, and they obviously make
- 17:10Speaker 1: those sandwiches on whole wheat, and peanut butter and jelly
- 17:13Speaker 1: is a good it's a good snack like in between
- 17:15Speaker 1: a meeting or whatever, like you might get an energy bite,
- 17:18Speaker 1: you might get trail mix, you might get a p
- 17:19Speaker 1: PNJ whatever. So fifty of those a day. But on
- 17:22Speaker 1: game day, the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which again
- 17:26Speaker 1: are a really good pregame or halftime quick thing to grab,
- 17:29Speaker 1: are not made on whole wheat. They're made on a
- 17:33Speaker 1: white bread. Do you know why on game day peanut
- 17:36Speaker 1: butter and jelly is made on white bread. No, that's
- 17:38Speaker 1: fascinating to me because my doctor told me go whole wheat.
- 17:41Speaker 1: My a one C number higher than it should be
- 17:43Speaker 1: as I'm turning forty, so I feel like I'm ready
- 17:46Speaker 1: to be armed with AMMO and say I want it
- 17:48Speaker 1: on white But maybe it's not appropriate for me. Why white. Yeah,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you're not playing a football game and you're not going
- 17:54Speaker 1: out for a second half because white bread doesn't have
- 17:56Speaker 1: the fiber that wheat bread does. And so if you
- 17:59Speaker 1: have to go back out onto the field, you don't
- 18:01Speaker 1: want to have any tummy trouble. And the white bread
- 18:03Speaker 1: is easier to digest. So you're saying we don't want
- 18:06Speaker 1: like a Lamar Jackson Monday night situation that we relived.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And I said it wasn't the bathroom and he said
- 18:11Speaker 1: it was crams. Okay, well look still the Tommy ache. Right,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you were there for that game, right, I was there anyway. Okay.
- 18:18Speaker 1: So broccoli and green beans are the two vegetables that
- 18:20Speaker 1: always go, and NFL teams always make an effort. As
- 18:23Speaker 1: someone who has eaten in NFL headquarters, I can say this,
- 18:26Speaker 1: they make an effort to cook these vegetables differently, flavor
- 18:30Speaker 1: them differently, show that they come in different flavors. Corn
- 18:34Speaker 1: f y, I Mike, As I tell my son, as
- 18:36Speaker 1: I tell my husband, and as I am now telling you,
- 18:38Speaker 1: corn is not a vegetable. What are you talking about?
- 18:42Speaker 1: It's more of a starch alright. When it comes to fuel,
- 18:45Speaker 1: it's not as good as a broccoli or a green
- 18:46Speaker 1: green or a brussel sprout. I love corn. I always
- 18:49Speaker 1: thought I was making the right call when I had corn.
- 18:52Speaker 1: That's like a that's like a carb more than man.
- 18:56Speaker 1: This is all right, Well, I'm glad you're educating, because
- 18:58Speaker 1: I felt like the education was in process. By the way,
- 19:00Speaker 1: for anyone who missed our Monday Night episodes, still one
- 19:02Speaker 1: of my favorite episodes of NFL, explain highly encouraged. You'd
- 19:05Speaker 1: hear a d D story about Lamar Jackson on that episode.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Uh and if you enjoy corn, I guess switched to
- 19:12Speaker 1: broccoli is the other thing that I'm learning in this episode.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I am so disappointed. Make sure you have enough green
- 19:17Speaker 1: stuff on your plate. Which really is the perfect segue
- 19:20Speaker 1: to be When we talked to Joe Thomas, he will
- 19:23Speaker 1: tell us the same way that NFL teams are evolving
- 19:27Speaker 1: in the way they look at nutrition. Joe evolved over
- 19:30Speaker 1: the course of his career somewhat, but really once he
- 19:34Speaker 1: retired and wanted to drop a ton of weight and
- 19:37Speaker 1: drop it healthily, well, we'll get some of those stories
- 19:40Speaker 1: from him. He is also one of our colleagues at
- 19:42Speaker 1: NFL Network. He's a guy that was a regular fixture
- 19:46Speaker 1: in Pro Bowl games and clearly never had an upset
- 19:49Speaker 1: stomach because he just didn't miss a single snap until
- 19:52Speaker 1: his eleventh and final season in the NFL. Add your
- 19:55Speaker 1: Conversation with Joe Thomas Coming up next on the NFL,
- 19:58Speaker 1: explained former offensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns, Joe Thomas,
- 20:01Speaker 1: and I'm gonna explain to you what I ate when
- 20:04Speaker 1: I played in the NFL. This podcast is sponsored by Kindrel.

- 20:59Speaker 1: the heart of progress. Here we go, Joe. When you
- 21:06Speaker 1: were drafted, you wait, what, I was three three or
- 21:10Speaker 1: five and you showed up to Cleveland and were they
- 21:14Speaker 1: happy with your playing weight? Yeah, overall they were happy
- 21:17Speaker 1: with the playing weight. They said, Hey, if you gain
- 21:19Speaker 1: a little bit of weight, it's okay, because most guys,
- 21:21Speaker 1: when you're in the NFL, they give you a maximum
- 21:23Speaker 1: weight and then if you go over they find you.
- 21:25Speaker 1: So a lot of guys were kind of in that
- 21:27Speaker 1: ballpark where they were trying to lose weight, whereas me,
- 21:30Speaker 1: I think the weight they gave me was like three
- 21:31Speaker 1: twenty and I was constantly weighing at like three. So
- 21:34Speaker 1: it was like the subtle like, hey, if you wanted
- 21:36Speaker 1: to get a little bit bigger, we wouldn't be mad
- 21:38Speaker 1: about it. Obviously, you don't want to lose your athleticism
- 21:40Speaker 1: and the quickness. But definitely it was always a battle.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Like if I came in after a practice and I
- 21:45Speaker 1: was like two nine two or two, the coach would
- 21:48Speaker 1: definitely mention it in a meeting in like a passive
- 21:50Speaker 1: aggressive manner like Tammas, what are you doing out there today,
- 21:53Speaker 1: you're only two ninety two. Make sure you're not missing
- 21:56Speaker 1: any one of those meals. And he's like he would
- 21:58Speaker 1: always have like some old man thing like make sure
- 22:00Speaker 1: you get some of that protein shake in your body
- 22:03Speaker 1: after you're done with the practice, and then like coach
- 22:06Speaker 1: like of protein shakes like two calories. I just burned
- 22:09Speaker 1: like seven thousand of your practice, So I think that's
- 22:12Speaker 1: kind of a drop in the bucket. So for you, Joe,
- 22:14Speaker 1: it was always an effort to actually keep the weight on.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It was a struggle my entire career, probably until I
- 22:20Speaker 1: hit my thirties, as most people experienced, where I was
- 22:24Speaker 1: really battling, Like every day I was thinking about I
- 22:27Speaker 1: was stressing about it. Really, I was like two every
- 22:30Speaker 1: two hours. Got to get a big like heavy carb,
- 22:32Speaker 1: heavy sugar meal to be able to basically walk around
- 22:36Speaker 1: bloated so I could be over three so I could
- 22:38Speaker 1: get my coach off. But did it affect the way
- 22:40Speaker 1: that you felt? Like? Could you sleep all right? Could
- 22:43Speaker 1: you move? Did you you know, in the off season,
- 22:45Speaker 1: if you didn't have to eat that way, did you
- 22:47Speaker 1: feel different than you did during the season when you
- 22:49Speaker 1: had to eat that way? No, I still had to
- 22:52Speaker 1: eat like that in the off season. So I was
- 22:55Speaker 1: eating like that constant. So I didn't know any different,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and it was a chore and a stressor. Like my
- 23:01Speaker 1: wife and I would go on vacation, we went to
- 23:03Speaker 1: Asia to visits and friends. One time was and we
- 23:06Speaker 1: went to like Tokyo and Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia. Was
- 23:09Speaker 1: an amazing trip right before we had kids. It was
- 23:10Speaker 1: like the two day tip of our life before kids.
- 23:15Speaker 1: But um, I remember I would get stressed out when
- 23:19Speaker 1: we'll be walking around the city because I knew I
- 23:20Speaker 1: was burning a lot of calories walking around. When you're
- 23:22Speaker 1: three ten and it's nineties something, you're burning calories just existing.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And so I remember stressing like every two hours a
- 23:29Speaker 1: big they've I gotta eat. And if you've ever been
- 23:32Speaker 1: to especially in Tokyo, it's a lot of fish. There's
- 23:34Speaker 1: not a lot of like really dense food places that
- 23:38Speaker 1: are fast and easy, and so i'd be like stressing out.
- 23:40Speaker 1: As soon as we walked past the McDonald's in Tokyo,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I'd be like, we have to stop. I need a
- 23:44Speaker 1: double cheese burger, I need a big back, let's go.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I need the galories because I was just like losing
- 23:50Speaker 1: weight eating sushio. Okay, so can you talk us through it? Yes,
- 23:54Speaker 1: So we'll go through like a typical Wednesday, because that's
- 23:56Speaker 1: kind of like the beginning of the NFL week. That's
- 23:58Speaker 1: your first day where you're really all coming in together
- 24:01Speaker 1: as a team, getting ready for your Sunday opponent. And
- 24:03Speaker 1: so for me, I would get into the building around
- 24:05Speaker 1: six thirty and then first thing in the morning, I
- 24:08Speaker 1: would have like a big bowl of oatmeal, and then
- 24:11Speaker 1: I would have yogurt, like a yogurt parfait, so yogurt, granola,
- 24:14Speaker 1: chia seeds. I'd put like flax seed protein in their berries,
- 24:18Speaker 1: and then I put honey on top because it's delicious
- 24:20Speaker 1: for one, but also because it was extra calories, right,
- 24:23Speaker 1: So I was always looking for ways to kind of
- 24:25Speaker 1: infuse more calories into my meal. And then a lot
- 24:28Speaker 1: of times if we didn't have practice for a little while,
- 24:31Speaker 1: I knew, Okay, I can also go over and I
- 24:33Speaker 1: can get pancakes, I can get scrambled eggs, I can
- 24:36Speaker 1: get some bacon because bacon's really calorie dents. And then
- 24:39Speaker 1: with the pancakes, i'd put peanut butter I'd smother them
- 24:42Speaker 1: in peanut butter, and then smother them in butter also
- 24:45Speaker 1: above that, and then tons and tons of syrup because
- 24:48Speaker 1: once again it's easy and cheap calories, and then I
- 24:52Speaker 1: had time to digest it, you know, if we came
- 24:53Speaker 1: in and we were practicing earlier in the day, because
- 24:57Speaker 1: sometimes during my career I had nine head coaches, so
- 25:00Speaker 1: we had a lot of different schedules. Sometimes if we
- 25:01Speaker 1: were practicing like around lunchtime or earlier or lifting, I
- 25:05Speaker 1: couldn't have as many calories early in the morning, and
- 25:08Speaker 1: then I had to shift, like some of my bigger
- 25:10Speaker 1: meals to like post practice, where I would be like pizza,
- 25:14Speaker 1: let's go, because pizza high carb, high fat, high protein.
- 25:18Speaker 1: And so there was this place called Jets Pizza and
- 25:21Speaker 1: Cleveland that we would order like after almost every practice,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and everyone was always astounded with how many pieces I
- 25:27Speaker 1: would eat, because even on days where I wouldn't practice,
- 25:29Speaker 1: I was like I had to have those calories, especially
- 25:32Speaker 1: right after a practice because I burned so much, and
- 25:35Speaker 1: then I so then back up right before practice, I
- 25:38Speaker 1: would still try to get like a hamburger or cheeseburger
- 25:41Speaker 1: in me, and then during practice, I would make sure
- 25:43Speaker 1: I was drinking a lot of gatorade because it's just
- 25:45Speaker 1: got a lot of sugar and it kind of helps
- 25:47Speaker 1: keep your energy up but also keeps those calories in
- 25:50Speaker 1: your system, so you're not burning through your fat reserves
- 25:53Speaker 1: during the practice and you're in a huge deficit once
- 25:56Speaker 1: you come out of practice, when I'm going to reach
- 25:58Speaker 1: for that pizza again. And then when you went home,
- 26:00Speaker 1: what would you eat? So my wife's favorite story. She
- 26:04Speaker 1: was the one that cooked every single meal in my
- 26:07Speaker 1: entire football career. I didn't even know how to boil water.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And so I would come home and we do to
- 26:11Speaker 1: get about six and she knew, like, hey, Joe's gonna
- 26:14Speaker 1: be hungry. He's got to eat. It's like his job, right,
- 26:17Speaker 1: So she would always have usually like a pasta or lasagna,
- 26:21Speaker 1: or like meatloaf and tons of mashed potatoes with gravy,
- 26:24Speaker 1: or like a lot of butter and sour cream and
- 26:27Speaker 1: like just pour on the fats. But one time she
- 26:31Speaker 1: was like, all right, I'm gonna try making a stir fry,
- 26:33Speaker 1: because you know, you can make a big stir fry
- 26:35Speaker 1: lots of vegetables, lots of rice, tons of stuff in it.
- 26:38Speaker 1: And she made it for me and it was really
- 26:40Speaker 1: good and I ate like two plates of it. But
- 26:42Speaker 1: then she noticed I was like really mad that, and
- 26:46Speaker 1: she was like, what's wrong? And I was like, well, honey,
- 26:47Speaker 1: your sturfry was really good, but it just didn't have
- 26:49Speaker 1: enough calories. And I'm probably gonna get in trouble tomorrow
- 26:53Speaker 1: because I'm gonna weigh in it like to and they're
- 26:56Speaker 1: gonna be like, what the hell is going on with Thomas.
- 26:58Speaker 1: This wasn't too much weight. We need to bulk up up.
- 27:01Speaker 1: And I didn't realize it didn't feel a couple of
- 27:03Speaker 1: years later, but she was like, that really hurt me.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Like I sipped a lot of time, had a lot
- 27:06Speaker 1: of thought. I like, making you this nice meal and
- 27:08Speaker 1: your only comment was it wasn't enough calories. Joe, did
- 27:14Speaker 1: she eat with you? She would, and she was like,
- 27:17Speaker 1: she was like, do you know how hard it is
- 27:19Speaker 1: for a woman to like sit there and watch you
- 27:22Speaker 1: eat four thousand calories at dinner and not eat with you,
- 27:25Speaker 1: like for every bite. And I'm like, yeah, I'm sorry,
- 27:28Speaker 1: I feel bad about that now. And I had said,
- 27:30Speaker 1: but I didn't know, you know, I just didn't know
- 27:31Speaker 1: any better. Because that had been my life for four
- 27:35Speaker 1: years in college and then for eleven years in the NFL.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But the thing before we get off that quick, the
- 27:41Speaker 1: thing that people always find the most amusing is what
- 27:43Speaker 1: I did before bed. So like during the day, I'm
- 27:45Speaker 1: eating all these calories, and then the only way I
- 27:48Speaker 1: could actually gain weight in season, because I was usually
- 27:52Speaker 1: trying to gain weight, especially the first half of the
- 27:54Speaker 1: season when it was it was hot, because you just
- 27:55Speaker 1: burned so many more calories at practice. Later in the
- 27:58Speaker 1: year in Cleveland, when I was fifty, it wasn't as
- 28:01Speaker 1: hard to gain what it's called outside. Everybody had that
- 28:05Speaker 1: winner jacket on with a nice layer of fat. But
- 28:08Speaker 1: before bed, I would buy a bunch of girls Scott Cookies.
- 28:12Speaker 1: And I was a big thin mint guy, and so
- 28:14Speaker 1: we would keep him in the freezer during the season,
- 28:17Speaker 1: and so I would go out with a sleeve of
- 28:19Speaker 1: thin mints, a glass of whole milk, and then I
- 28:22Speaker 1: would get a huge like bowl of ice cream, or
- 28:26Speaker 1: either just take the whole point upstairs of like Ben
- 28:28Speaker 1: and Jerry's or Mitchell's ice Cream, which is a famous
- 28:31Speaker 1: place in Cleveland, or Whoever's Custard, another famous place in Cleveland.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I bring the whole point with the giant like it
- 28:39Speaker 1: was probably a thirty two ounce whole milk and the
- 28:41Speaker 1: sleeve of thin mints, and we'd sit there and we'd
- 28:43Speaker 1: watch TV at night with my wife and it was glorious.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Would she eat any of the ice cream or the
- 28:51Speaker 1: sin mints? She would eat some of the ice cream,
- 28:52Speaker 1: but obviously her bowl was like two scoops and mine
- 28:55Speaker 1: was like or the whole court. Do you know how
- 29:01Speaker 1: many calories you consumed today when you were in the NFL.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I don't. And that was one of the things that
- 29:07Speaker 1: in hindsight, as I reflect back, I'm kind of mad
- 29:10Speaker 1: I didn't because at that point in my career, I
- 29:12Speaker 1: didn't know a lot about diet. I didn't know a
- 29:14Speaker 1: lot about nutrition and how it affected me. I just
- 29:17Speaker 1: knew that I needed to eat a lot, so I
- 29:19Speaker 1: needed a walk around feeling super full every meal. I
- 29:22Speaker 1: had to feel like I had just finished Thanksgiving dinner.
- 29:27Speaker 1: And I knew it had to be very very heavy
- 29:29Speaker 1: carbs or I was going to lose weight, Like I
- 29:31Speaker 1: couldn't do the vegetables and the proteins like it had
- 29:34Speaker 1: to have a lot of breads. Imposts like or just
- 29:37Speaker 1: straight sugar like that. Um, And I wish I would
- 29:40Speaker 1: have counted because now that I'm retired and I do
- 29:44Speaker 1: pay attention and I do understand that and nutrition a
- 29:46Speaker 1: lot more, I'm like, holy crap, I was probably at
- 29:49Speaker 1: like ten thousand calories a day easy, because like, right
- 29:52Speaker 1: now I could go out and have a good lunch
- 29:53Speaker 1: and feel like relatively full and it's like three thousand galleries.
- 29:57Speaker 1: So back then it had to be it had to
- 29:58Speaker 1: be ten thousand at least, right, So we hear about
- 30:01Speaker 1: coaches who you know, like are all about the specific
- 30:04Speaker 1: smoothies and what everyone's too taking in any of those
- 30:07Speaker 1: nine head coaches really very specific about nutrition. Most coaches
- 30:11Speaker 1: they don't really understand diet and nutrition that much, but
- 30:13Speaker 1: I think they understand that sports performance is important and
- 30:16Speaker 1: it is kind of a way to get an advantage,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and so those guys are now hiring really good nutritionists,
- 30:22Speaker 1: really good sports scientists that are bringing in that whole
- 30:25Speaker 1: side of it and then educating you. For the most part,
- 30:28Speaker 1: the coach just wants to see that your participation was
- 30:30Speaker 1: checked off on the attendance sheet he gets every day
- 30:33Speaker 1: from the weight room coach, and that you aren't getting
- 30:36Speaker 1: too heavy during the season. Like they got so much
- 30:38Speaker 1: other stuff to worry about during the season they don't
- 30:40Speaker 1: even really think about it. But I do think most
- 30:42Speaker 1: NFL teams now have a good sports science team that
- 30:45Speaker 1: has good nutritionists, and I think most players that have
- 30:48Speaker 1: come out of college recently are getting that education in
- 30:50Speaker 1: college because everybody finally understands how big and how important
- 30:54Speaker 1: nutrition and diet is for professional athletes. If you were
- 30:57Speaker 1: to have to pack on pans now, do you think
- 30:59Speaker 1: you'd do it differently? I probably would do it a
- 31:01Speaker 1: lot smarter with the things that I ate. I would
- 31:03Speaker 1: probably eat the same amount of calorie ease, but I
- 31:06Speaker 1: would do it with food that was maybe better and
- 31:08Speaker 1: would make me feel better, maybe a little less bloated,
- 31:11Speaker 1: maybe a little cleaner, maybe a little less processed foods,
- 31:14Speaker 1: probably a little less ice cream. But I still think
- 31:16Speaker 1: I probably would have a lot of ice cream too,
- 31:18Speaker 1: because it's delicious and it's high calories. Is there anything
- 31:21Speaker 1: that you ate a ton of during your NFL career
- 31:23Speaker 1: that you just can't eat anymore? Like? Do you still
- 31:25Speaker 1: like pizza? Do you still like bacon? Love pizza? I
- 31:28Speaker 1: love it even more now and The thing is like
- 31:30Speaker 1: at the time, I didn't like it all that much.
- 31:32Speaker 1: It was it was good, don't get me wrong, but
- 31:34Speaker 1: I was eating it constantly, so I didn't appreciate it.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Now that I don't eat like crap all the time,
- 31:39Speaker 1: the times that I do, like kind of let myself
- 31:42Speaker 1: go and have some pizza and ice cream and you know,
- 31:44Speaker 1: treat yourself, right, I really appreciate it and I really
- 31:49Speaker 1: enjoy everybody. Do you ever have any teammates like a
- 31:52Speaker 1: wide receiver just to yell at you, like, why do
- 31:54Speaker 1: you get to eat that? And I, yeah, Well that's
- 31:58Speaker 1: the funny thing is. And I think this is the
- 32:00Speaker 1: reason why you see a lot of NFL linemen when
- 32:03Speaker 1: they retire, they get skinny because they've been fighting like
- 32:06Speaker 1: the diet in nutrition, I don't want to say battle,
- 32:08Speaker 1: but they've been paying attention during their career because it
- 32:12Speaker 1: was important. And we're not built like a receiver, like
- 32:14Speaker 1: genetically to be able to go out and run seven
- 32:16Speaker 1: miles on McDonald's breakfast, and a lot of the linemen
- 32:20Speaker 1: they have to think about it and they understand it,
- 32:23Speaker 1: and so when they retired they realized, hey, dropping some
- 32:25Speaker 1: weight is going to be healthy. For the long term.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Having a healthy lifestyle is going to help me feel
- 32:31Speaker 1: better when I retire. And receivers and skill players by
- 32:34Speaker 1: and large, because they're sprinting seven to ten miles in
- 32:36Speaker 1: a practice, they didn't have to think one bit about it.
- 32:39Speaker 1: And like Chad Johnson was famous, he ate McDonald's all
- 32:42Speaker 1: the time, Like every day he was going and getting
- 32:45Speaker 1: like McDonald's drive through for breakfast before practice, and that's
- 32:48Speaker 1: just what they knew. Like Hawk, my co host and
- 32:51Speaker 1: good friend on my podcast, he was mountain dew and
- 32:54Speaker 1: pizza like during the season, that's all he had. And
- 32:57Speaker 1: So when you retire, if you don't know anything about
- 32:59Speaker 1: diet in nutrition, you don't and you stopped running seven
- 33:01Speaker 1: to ten miles of sprints every day, all of a
- 33:04Speaker 1: sudden you start packing in those towns. And I think
- 33:06Speaker 1: I see a lot of those guys that first like
- 33:08Speaker 1: five or six years they retire, they gain a lot
- 33:10Speaker 1: of weight, and then all of a sudden it hits
- 33:13Speaker 1: in there like holy crap. One day they wake up
- 33:14Speaker 1: and they feel like garbage. They got no energy, and
- 33:17Speaker 1: they don't look like they used to when they were playing,
- 33:19Speaker 1: and they're all right, I need to learn about this.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I need to get serious. I need to start living
- 33:23Speaker 1: a healthier lifestyle and eating better. And it seems like
- 33:27Speaker 1: that's like in their forties. So you know what it
- 33:29Speaker 1: really is true, Joe, I'm thinking about it. Offensive linemen
- 33:32Speaker 1: get skinnier when they retire, and skill guys a lot
- 33:35Speaker 1: of them get a lot bigger. Okay, So you know,
- 33:39Speaker 1: we sort of had this uncertainty your final year until
- 33:43Speaker 1: free agency, until March that you announced yes you are
- 33:46Speaker 1: indeed retiring. Was there any withdrawal? Like you said when
- 33:49Speaker 1: you were in Asia, it was actually hard. It was
- 33:52Speaker 1: a chore to make sure you ate. But then when
- 33:54Speaker 1: you had trained your body to be hungry every two hours,
- 33:58Speaker 1: was it hard to not eat every two hours? So
- 34:01Speaker 1: that's I think one of the challenge and playing in
- 34:03Speaker 1: the NFL are playing football and having that mindset where
- 34:06Speaker 1: food stresses you out all the time because you have
- 34:09Speaker 1: to eat it, or on the other side of it,
- 34:10Speaker 1: if you're a bigger guy that's always trying to lose weight, Like,
- 34:13Speaker 1: if it's on your mind all the time, it's something
- 34:14Speaker 1: that you you kind of obsess over, And so teaching
- 34:17Speaker 1: myself to eat when I wasn't hungry was one of
- 34:20Speaker 1: the bad things that I wish I wouldn't have learned
- 34:23Speaker 1: when I played football, because now I have to consciously
- 34:26Speaker 1: think about after I'm done with the meal, like I
- 34:28Speaker 1: am full, I do not need to keep eating. I
- 34:31Speaker 1: should stop where everyone else is at the tables like, oh,
- 34:34Speaker 1: I'm stuff I can't have another bite, And I'm like, man,
- 34:36Speaker 1: I'm a little full, but I could honestly eat another pizza.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Should we order another pizza? Guys? And They're like, no, stop,
- 34:42Speaker 1: get up the walk away from the table. Is there
- 34:44Speaker 1: any part of the way that you had to eat
- 34:46Speaker 1: that you do miss? Yeah, So what I miss is
- 34:49Speaker 1: just not thinking about it. Like the only thing I
- 34:51Speaker 1: had to think about when I was playing in the
- 34:53Speaker 1: NFL was like I just have to be eating, and
- 34:56Speaker 1: I didn't think about like feeling full or anything like that. Now, obviously,
- 35:01Speaker 1: if you have to pay attention to what you're eating,
- 35:03Speaker 1: you me personally after my fifteen years of trying to
- 35:07Speaker 1: eat everything, I just have to have that consciousness about
- 35:10Speaker 1: what I'm eating and just slow down sometimes take a breath. Okay,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I don't need to go wake up and have breakfast
- 35:17Speaker 1: tomorrow morning after a huge meal tonight just kind of flipping.
- 35:20Speaker 1: That mindset has taken a conscious effort. It's still even
- 35:23Speaker 1: a few years out. It's just a consciousness that I
- 35:26Speaker 1: have to have about my food because, like I said,
- 35:28Speaker 1: I love to eat a lot. I'm a big foodie.
- 35:31Speaker 1: I feel food is such a great way to experience
- 35:34Speaker 1: friendships and conversations and new cities and travel. And so
- 35:39Speaker 1: because we have this amazing job of working for the
- 35:42Speaker 1: NFL and NFL Media as an analyst, we go to
- 35:44Speaker 1: all these amazing cities, all these amazing stadiums that now
- 35:47Speaker 1: food is so much a part of that experience, and
- 35:49Speaker 1: I always have fomo of like I don't want to
- 35:51Speaker 1: miss out, Like when's the next time I'm going to
- 35:53Speaker 1: be in Houston that Nancy's hustle and get to enjoy
- 35:56Speaker 1: their pancakes like Nancy's cakes, Like I gotta go and
- 35:59Speaker 1: have another round of it. What about the athlete that
- 36:02Speaker 1: you are right now, I mean you look like a
- 36:04Speaker 1: tight end, maybe a wide you were, Actually I think
- 36:06Speaker 1: you might look like a wide receiver more than a
- 36:08Speaker 1: tight end. Thank you. I try to stay lead, try
- 36:12Speaker 1: to for the health side of it, certainly for my knees.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Like I said, doctors like keep yourself, lean, your kneeds
- 36:18Speaker 1: will feel better. He's absolutely true. So feeling crappy when
- 36:21Speaker 1: you eat crappy is a big motivator to not do
- 36:24Speaker 1: it all the time. But do you think you have
- 36:26Speaker 1: more explosion now? Do you think that you're actually maybe
- 36:28Speaker 1: a little bit faster or more athletic? I can assure
- 36:32Speaker 1: you that I am not even a quarter of the
- 36:34Speaker 1: athlete of what I used to be because I just
- 36:36Speaker 1: don't train like that and I'm an old yogi that
- 36:39Speaker 1: goes very slowly through life. And I'm okay with that.
- 36:43Speaker 1: In that thousand calories syrup drink, was it like eggna?
- 36:47Speaker 1: Was it good? Or was it? It's kind of like
- 36:49Speaker 1: it was kind of gross because it was too thick.
- 36:50Speaker 1: It was, like I said, it was just cream with
- 36:52Speaker 1: basically like chocolate syrup, and so you definitely small powder.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I don't miss that at all, No that I missed
- 36:59Speaker 1: the ice cream. I don't miss that sirrup cream drink.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Was there another teammate that had to maintain weight as well?
- 37:04Speaker 1: That would do something even more over the top? And
- 37:07Speaker 1: we had a player Carlos Stansby in Cleveland. He was
- 37:09Speaker 1: a linebacker and played a bunch of years for the Cardinals.
- 37:12Speaker 1: We had him, and he sent his blood off to
- 37:14Speaker 1: this nutritionist in Florida who was going to give him
- 37:18Speaker 1: like the best things for him to eat for like
- 37:20Speaker 1: energy and recovery and performance. And I'll never forget because
- 37:23Speaker 1: he ate lobster mashed potatoes like that was what he
- 37:28Speaker 1: was supposed to eat from this doctor. And so that's
- 37:31Speaker 1: what he ate for like four meals a day every day.
- 37:34Speaker 1: So he would come into the locker room where he
- 37:36Speaker 1: would come into the cafeteria with this like pre made
- 37:39Speaker 1: big py Rex dish and it had lobster mashed potatoes
- 37:43Speaker 1: and he ate it for breakfast at eight am. And
- 37:45Speaker 1: then he would eat the same thing at lunch. After practice,
- 37:48Speaker 1: he would eat the same thing for dinner. And it
- 37:50Speaker 1: was amazing to me to think that some nutritionists thought
- 37:53Speaker 1: the best thing for your body would be the eat
- 37:55Speaker 1: the exact same thing for three or four meals every
- 37:58Speaker 1: single day. That actually doesn't sound fun. Can you imagine
- 38:01Speaker 1: how boring? Like one side dish of lobster mashed potatoes.
- 38:04Speaker 1: I'm like, that's good. The lifelook. It was great with
- 38:06Speaker 1: a steak, but after that, I'm good. Add awesome job
- 38:17Speaker 1: with Joe and super grateful for him for given us
- 38:19Speaker 1: a couple of minutes here. I don't know if I
- 38:21Speaker 1: am hungry or don't want a meal. Ever, again, a DD,
- 38:25Speaker 1: I couldn't get over there was one thing that you
- 38:26Speaker 1: had asked him about, and I thought the answer was
- 38:28Speaker 1: going to be an easy Yeah, of course I'm not
- 38:30Speaker 1: eating as much in the off season. But the fact
- 38:32Speaker 1: that Joe was still consuming food throughout the course of
- 38:35Speaker 1: the entire year, not football year, like the entire year
- 38:39Speaker 1: struck me as just really overwhelming. I mean that goes
- 38:43Speaker 1: to our whole previous episode about a player's work week
- 38:46Speaker 1: and work schedule. Well, it is indeed a twelve month job,
- 38:50Speaker 1: even though there are some folks that think it's not.
- 38:53Speaker 1: And the way he was talking about gorging on a
- 38:55Speaker 1: whole pizza every day, it was like that might be
- 38:58Speaker 1: the one thing, Yeah, that turns me off to pizza.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Pizza is one of my favorite foods though it really is.
- 39:04Speaker 1: And a D next time you and I are in
- 39:05Speaker 1: the Northeast together, I'm going to drag you to the
- 39:08Speaker 1: Boogie down Bronx. Here's a couple of pizzerias that by
- 39:11Speaker 1: the people talk about. Manhattan Pizza, No no no, No, the
- 39:13Speaker 1: best pizza is in the Bronx and it's not Brooklyn
- 39:16Speaker 1: for all the people in the b K saying that,
- 39:18Speaker 1: And I think the best pizza is actually in Jersey.
- 39:20Speaker 1: I really do. See Jersey does great bagels. And I
- 39:24Speaker 1: know where your brother lives, very close to where I
- 39:26Speaker 1: grew up, and there is a bagel shop that I
- 39:29Speaker 1: actually told you last time you were in New Jersey
- 39:30Speaker 1: you had to go to and I did and I
- 39:32Speaker 1: didn't make it. But you know, maybe we'll take Joe
- 39:34Speaker 1: Thomas there. If he eats carbs again, I would be
- 39:38Speaker 1: staying away. If that's the case. I'm trying to cut
- 39:40Speaker 1: my carb consumption in a big way, but add the
- 39:42Speaker 1: awesome job with Joe Thomas. Uh and by the way,
- 39:44Speaker 1: I just want to remind some folks too, we are
- 39:46Speaker 1: going to be doing a mail bag episode down the road.
- 39:49Speaker 1: A d D. You have gotten some questions on social media,
