- 0:00I thought I would do something, well this article
- 0:03is kind of recent from where we're recording,
- 0:05a nice change in, anyhow, I thought this would
- 0:08be something fun -ish to cover. I don't know
- 0:11if you've heard about this, Taylor. This is from
- 0:14the BBC, articles 21st of May, 2026. This is
- 0:18something that's currently happening right now,
- 0:20though not in our neck of the woods, so I don't
- 0:22know how prevalent it is in your day -to -day
- 0:25news. This article is titled, India has a new
- 0:28political supers - a cockroach oh I did not know
- 0:32about this yeah so well it goes on so let's listen
- 0:36Indian politics has acquired an unusual mascot
- 0:40the cockroach a satirical collective that takes
- 0:43inspiration from the insect stubborn reviled
- 0:47and considered indestructible has attracted millions
- 0:51of online followers and mainstream media attention
- 0:54in less than a week, making even veteran politicians
- 0:57sit up and take notice. The cockroach was thrust
- 1:00into the spotlight last week after controversial
- 1:02comments made by India's Chief Justice Surya
- 1:06Kant. During a hearing, he allegedly compared
- 1:08unemployed young people drifting towards journalism
- 1:11and activism with cockroaches and parasites.
- 1:14He later clarified that he was referring specifically
- 1:17to people with quote fake and bogus degrees and
- 1:20quote not India's youth more broadly but by then
- 1:23the comments had already spread widely online
- 1:26triggering outrage jokes and a humorous political
- 1:30idea called the cockroach janta party cockroaches
- 1:33people's party or a CJP the name is a parody
- 1:37of Prime Minister's Narendra Modi's Bharatiya
- 1:41janta party BJP which has been in power since
- 1:452014 critics and rights groups have alleged that
- 1:49press freedom and civil liberties have declined
- 1:51since then, which the BJP denies. Yeah, they
- 1:54would, but they're kind of not the best. A lot
- 1:59of racial undertones with them. Really? I didn't
- 2:02know that. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they're very anti
- 2:05-Islamic. Oh, I think there's a lot of stuff
- 2:08like that in India. The CJP is not a formal political
- 2:12party, but an online movement built around political
- 2:15satire. Its tongue -in -cheek membership criteria
- 2:19include being unemployed, lazy, chronically online,
- 2:22and having, quote, the ability to rant professionally,
- 2:25unquote. It was created by Abhijit Dipki, a political
- 2:29communication strategist and student at Boston
- 2:32University. He says the idea came as a joke.
- 2:35Before moving to the US, he worked with the Aam
- 2:38Admi Party, AAP, a political organization that
- 2:42emerged from an anti -corruption movement in
- 2:45India more than a decade ago and is known for
- 2:47its strong social media presence. I thought we
- 2:51should all come together, maybe just start a
- 2:53platform and quote, he told BBC Marathi. What
- 2:57followed was much bigger than he expected. Within
- 2:59days, the CJP amassed tens of thousands of signups
- 3:03through a Google form, inspired the hashtag,
- 3:06main be cockroach. I too am a cockroach. And
- 3:10endorsements from opposition leaders. Opposition
- 3:13leaders. On Wednesday, top opposition leader
- 3:16Akhilesh Yadav posted on X. BJP v. CJP. The discourse
- 3:23also spilled offline, with young volunteers turning
- 3:26up drastic cockroaches at clean -up drives and
- 3:29protests in a theatrical embrace of the label.
- 3:31On Thursday, the CJP's Instagram account crossed
- 3:3510 million followers, overtaking the official
- 3:38account of the BJP, widely described as the world's
- 3:41largest political party by membership, which
- 3:44has around 8 .7 million Instagram followers.
- 3:47However, the CJP GDP's X account with more than
- 3:50200 ,000 followers is currently not visible in
- 3:53India, with people trying to view it being told
- 3:55that it has been withheld in response to illegal
- 3:59demand. The pace and scale of the CJP's rise
- 4:02has taken many by surprise, but there's little
- 4:05evidence so far that this will spill over into
- 4:07political change on the ground in India. Although
- 4:10the CJP has outpaced political parties on social
- 4:13media, the BJP and the opposition congress remain
- 4:16the country's dominant political forces. With
- 4:19millions of active members nationwide, still
- 4:22the CJP's momentum continues to grow. This does
- 4:25keep going. There's actually been something happening
- 4:28recently. like in the last couple of days I believe
- 4:31there was a big protest but I thought it was
- 4:34kind of cool how much traction the satirical
- 4:39cockroach political party movement is getting
- 4:42and also at the same time I think it's a little
- 4:44disappointing that it's not like it's satirical
- 4:47it's not like actually well yeah and the guy
- 4:51who created it it said he was in the US wasn't
- 4:54it yeah didn't say that but there was a big protest
- 4:57having to do with cockroach party in india just
- 5:01recently of course i didn't read you that one
- 5:03because i thought i would share more about that's
- 5:06too soon the movement yeah it's too soon you
- 5:09needed to know the background information first
- 5:11it kind of reminds me a little bit of the birds
- 5:18the birds aren't real people that's it birds
- 5:21aren't real i was about to call them yeah well
- 5:23and i feel like they could merge us from just
- 5:25birds aren't real to birds aren't real cockroaches
- 5:28are forever or something like that yeah i do
- 5:31like that it seems as though the cockroach what's
- 5:35going on with the cockroach is a little bit more
- 5:37politically motivated without being politically
- 5:40it's weird yeah it almost feels like i don't
- 5:43know if like in the last decade western english
- 5:47-speaking countries decided to go with like the
- 5:49avocado toast party it's true yep for comments
- 5:54made by the rich like denigrating us yeah like
- 5:57i would love for this to have been like an actual
- 6:00something that meant a little bit more than just
- 6:03a satirical movement that's not doing anything
- 6:06to politics but alas here we are it will have
- 6:10an impact india has a very weird and hard to
- 6:13understand political system just because it's
- 6:15such a massive country and like such diverse
- 6:18groups that are involved within it I'm pretty
- 6:21sure they have a few communist parties at the
- 6:23head in several provinces. Yeah But Modi is he's
- 6:28kind of a Trumpy guy. I'm almost their equivalent
- 6:32of a politician Yeah, it is very interesting
- 6:36and there's always like those big farmer protests
- 6:39whenever these protests happen They're always
- 6:40the world's largest protest ever because there's
- 6:43a billion people there and it also reminds me
- 6:45a little bit of the rhinoceros party in Canada
- 6:47Chelsea I don't know if you're familiar with
- 6:49them. They've been around for ever and it is
- 6:52a joke political party for the sake of a joke.
- 6:56Like, they ran on repealing the laws of gravity
- 6:59and things like that. Oh, and they're also behind
- 7:03the Alberta Separatist movement, right? They
- 7:05are pure joke. They are joke for the sake of
- 7:08joke and not satire or irony. The Alberta Separatist
- 7:13movement is very real, even though it sounds
- 7:15like a joke. Yeah, it sure does. But yeah, that's
- 7:19more awkward humor with the Alberta Separatist
- 7:21stuff. Anyhow, you guys got 48 hours. Look into
- 7:24none of that stuff. It's either too complicated
- 7:26or too dumb to worry about. Bye.
