- 0:10Hello friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's the 28th of October and it's a Monday.
- 0:17It's great to have your company. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:20and inviting me in to join you at the start of this new week.
- 0:24And of course, you know what that means.
- 0:26It means that we are going to continue.
- 0:29In fact, we're going to wrap up the book of Nehemiah this week
- 0:34before we head all the way back to the New Testament to read
- 0:37through the book of Acts together.
- 0:39Yeah, we're going to hear the story of how the church first
- 0:41began. But this week we are going to be
- 0:45back in the Old Testament, in fact, back in the last section
- 0:48of the Old Testament. When Israel returned from
- 0:51Babylon, it was only about 85 years.
- 0:54Is that right? Yeah, about 85 years between
- 0:56their return and the end of the recorded letters and prophecies
- 1:02that make up the Old Testament. So really at the end of this
- 1:06book, Nehemiah, there's really only a couple or or a few minor
- 1:09prophets, Zechariah, Haggai and Malachi, who will speak about
- 1:12the time after this. And then we find ourselves
- 1:16skipping about 400 years and coming up to the New Testament.
- 1:20But that's next week. This week we will continue and
- 1:23we will continue with these people who have just declared
- 1:27their wrongs, asked for God's forgiveness, and now they are
- 1:31going to make a vow, a vow to follow God's ways and uphold
- 1:36everything that he wants his people to do.
- 1:39So irrespective of how long it lasts, this is a very good
- 1:41thing, right? Yes, it is.
- 1:43So you'd remember at the end of last week they had just
- 1:46confessed that they had married into the local Pagan population
- 1:51and they had just worked to put everything right again.
- 1:54And now it's time to say yes, this is our commitment and how
- 1:57we'll go forward. So let's pick up where we left
- 2:00off reading together. Nehemiah chapter 10.
- 2:13The document was ratified and sealed with the following names.
- 2:17The governor Nehemiah, son of Hakaliah and also Zedekiah.
- 2:23The following priests Soraya, Azariah, Jeremiah, Pashur,
- 2:29Amariah, Malkajar, Hatush, Shebeniah, Malik Harem,
- 2:36Merrimoth, Obadiah, Daniel Giniton, Barack Meshalam,
- 2:43Abbajar Myjamin, Marziah, Bilgai and Shemayah.
- 2:49These were the priests. The following Levites Jeshua,
- 2:54son of Azaniah Binuwai from the family of Hinad Cadmiel and
- 3:00their fellow Levites Shebeniah, Hodayah, Keletar, Pelayah,
- 3:06Hanan, Micah, Rahab, Hashabayah, Zakah, Sherebaya, Shebaniah,
- 3:14Hodaya, Bani and Binaynu. The following leaders, Parosh
- 3:21Pahath Moab Elam Zatu Bani Bunai Asgad Bebai Adonijah Bigvi Aiden
- 3:34ETA Hezekiah Azur Hodaya Hashem Bezai Harif Anatoth, Nebai
- 3:44Magpayash, Meshalam, Heza Meshazabel, Zedok, Jadua
- 3:52Pelotaya Hainan, Anaya Hoshiya, Hananiyah, Hazhub, Halahesh
- 4:01Pilhah Shobek Reyem Hashabna, Marseille, Ahaya Hanan, Aynan,
- 4:10Malik, Haram and Bena. Then the rest of the people, the
- 4:17priests, the Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple
- 4:20servants, and all who had separated themselves from the
- 4:23Pagan people of the land in order to obey the law of God,
- 4:27together with their wives, sons, daughters, and all who were old
- 4:31enough to understand, joined their leaders and bound
- 4:34themselves with an oath. They swore a curse on themselves
- 4:39if they failed to obey the law of God as issued by His servant
- 4:43Moses. They solemnly promised to
- 4:46carefully follow all the commands, regulations, and
- 4:49decrees of the Lord our God. We promise not to let our
- 4:53daughters marry the Pagan people of the land and not to let our
- 4:57sons marry their daughters. We also promise that if the
- 5:01people of the land should bring any merchandise or grain to be
- 5:04sold on the Sabbath or any other holy day, we will refuse to buy
- 5:08it. Every 7th year we will let our
- 5:11land rest and we will cancel all debts owed to us.
- 5:16In addition, we promise to obey the command to pay the annual
- 5:20temple tax of 1/8 of an ounce of silver for the care of the
- 5:24temple of our God. This will provide for the bread
- 5:28of the presents, for the regular grain offerings and burnt
- 5:31offerings, for the offerings on the Sabbaths, the new moon
- 5:35celebrations and the annual festivals, for the holy
- 5:39offerings and for the sin offerings to make atonement for
- 5:42Israel. It will provide for everything
- 5:45necessary for the work of the temple of our God.
- 5:49We have cast sacred lots to determine when at regular times
- 5:53each year the families of the priests, Levites, and the common
- 5:57people should bring wood to God's temple to be burned on the
- 6:00altar of the Lord our God. As it is written in the law.
- 6:06We promise to bring the first part of every harvest to the
- 6:09Lord's temple year after year, whether it be a crop from the
- 6:12soil or from our fruit trees. We agree to give God our oldest
- 6:17sons and the first born of all our herds and flocks as
- 6:21prescribed in the law. We will present them to the
- 6:24priests who minister in the temple of our God.
- 6:27We will store the produce in the storerooms of the temple of our
- 6:30God. We will bring the best of our
- 6:33flower and other grain offerings, the best of our
- 6:36fruits, and the best of our new wine and olive oil.
- 6:39We promise to bring to the Levites a 10th of everything our
- 6:43land produces, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes
- 6:47in all our rural towns. A priest, a descendant of Aaron,
- 6:53will be with the Levites as they receive these tithes, and a
- 6:57tithe of all that is collected as tithes will be delivered by
- 7:00the Levites to the temple of our God and placed in the store
- 7:04rooms. The people and the Levites must
- 7:07bring these offerings of grain, new wine and olive oil to the
- 7:11store rooms and place them in the sacred containers near the
- 7:15ministering priests, the gatekeepers and the singers.
- 7:19We promise together not to neglect the temple of our God,
- 7:35our Father. You are a big hearted and
- 7:38forgiving God as you showed us through your Son Jesus.
- 7:45Ah, we see the way that Jesus lived and the way that he erred
- 7:49on the side of forgiveness and compassion even while standing
- 7:53true to all of your decrees. And like God's people here, when
- 8:00they went the wrong way and they turned their backs on you, they
- 8:04were able to turn back to you and you forgave them and showed
- 8:07them a way forward. Lord, as we mess up, as we sin,
- 8:14as we make mistakes, Lord, just continue to prompt through your
- 8:19spirit, our conscience and draw us back to You that we might
- 8:23confess our sins. And just as Israel did in this
- 8:27chapter, turn back to You and promise to live according to the
- 8:33way that You have planned for us and inevitably, when we make
- 8:37more mistakes. Thank you, Jesus, for your
- 8:40patience and the incredible gift of your grace and your
- 8:44forgiveness that you earned with such a great price for us.
- 8:49We will never take that for granted, and we are so grateful.
- 8:53So we praise you, our sanctifying and forgiving God,
- 8:57and it's in your name that we pray Jesus, Amen.
