- 0:00Take your Bible if you would please, and turn to 1st
- 0:03Thessalonians chapter 5. As we look at verses 12 to 15
- 0:09this morning, and as you're turning, I'm reminded of a of a
- 0:14parable written by Karen Maines that she entitles A Brawling
- 0:21Bride. She paints A vivid scene
- 0:25describing A suspenseful moment in a wedding ceremony.
- 0:31Down front stands the groom in a spotless tuxedo, handsome,
- 0:35smiling, full of anticipation, shoes shined, every hair in
- 0:43place, anxiously awaiting the presence of his bride.
- 0:50All the attendants are in place, looking joyful and attractive.
- 0:57The magic of moment finally arrives as a pipe organ reaches
- 1:01full crescendo and the stately wedding March begins.
- 1:08Everyone rises and looks toward the door for their first glimpse
- 1:14of the bride. Suddenly there is a horrified
- 1:18gasp. The wedding party is shocked.
- 1:23The groom stares in embarrassed disbelief.
- 1:28Instead of a lovely woman dressed in elegant white,
- 1:31smiling behind a lace veil, the bride is limping down the aisle.
- 1:39Her dress is soiled and torn, her legs seems twisted, ugly
- 1:46cuts and bruises cover her bare arms.
- 1:49Her nose is bleeding, one eye is purple and swollen, and her hair
- 1:56is dishevelled. Does not this handsome groom
- 2:01deserve better than this? Asked the author.
- 2:05And then the clincher. Alas, his bride.
- 2:10The church has been fighting again, calling the church a
- 2:20bride. Paul says these words in
- 2:22Ephesians 5. Christ loved the church and gave
- 2:26himself up for her to make her holy and clean so that he could
- 2:32give her to himself as a glorious church without a single
- 2:36spot or wrinkle or any other blemish being holy and without a
- 2:42single fault. That's the plan, to present a
- 2:51beautiful bride unscathed, spotless, blameless to his
- 3:00Father in heaven. And positionally that is true.
- 3:08That's exactly what's going to happen.
- 3:12But practically everyday life is a lot different in the life of
- 3:21the bride. Instead of being spotless, she
- 3:27is filled with anger and bitterness, infighting,
- 3:31quarreling, arguing, conflict, unresolved happening all the
- 3:38time, making her a bride that's completely dishevelled and
- 3:44unlike the bride that will be presented to his Father in
- 3:50heaven. It is true that the bride does
- 3:54survive the blows of the world. All the things the world froze
- 4:00at. The bride she she can handle.
- 4:04But it's the infighting that makes the bride so unattractive.
- 4:13Puritan Thomas Brooks once penned these words.
- 4:17He said for wolves to worry lambs is no wonder, but for
- 4:22lambs to worry one another, this is a natural and monstrous.
- 4:30So Paul in his own way is going to address how the church is to
- 4:39function, to show that the model life is one that adapts to each
- 4:46and every situation with the leadership and with the
- 4:50membership, so that the fellowship of the bride, the
- 4:54fellowship of the church, is all that God designed it to be.
- 5:00And so Paul pins these words in First Thessalonians chapter 5,
- 5:04verse 12 by saying this. But we request of you, brethren,
- 5:09that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you and
- 5:14have charge over you and the Lord, and give you instruction
- 5:18that you seen them very highly in love because of their work.
- 5:22Live in peace with one another. We urge you, brethren, admonish
- 5:27the unruly, encourage the faint hearted, help the weak.
- 5:31Be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another
- 5:36with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good
- 5:41for one another and for all people.
- 5:48Fall very simply sums up how we as brethren behave and react and
- 5:57adapt to those who lead us and to those around us, so that the
- 6:03Church can be that which God designed it to be.
- 6:09So the model life is not just one of abstinence in chapter 4,
- 6:13verses 1 to 8, or aspiration in chapter 4, verses 9 to 12, or
- 6:19anticipation in chapter 4, verses 13 to 18, or alertness
- 6:25chapter 5, verses 1 to 11, but adaptability, flexibility, the
- 6:32ability to get along one with another within the body of
- 6:36Christ. And so he requests, He said that
- 6:40in chapter 4 verse #1 as well. He appeals to them, first of all
- 6:46in their relationship to the leadership and then in the
- 6:52relationship to one another. Now, whether there was conflict
- 6:57in the church, we don't necessarily know, but we know
- 7:01that the Church of Thessalonica was a young church, and so those
- 7:05who led in the church were young in the Lord.
- 7:09They weren't mature men who had been around and seasoned in
- 7:14their lives and walk with the Lord over a period of time.
- 7:17They they were young like everyone else was young in the
- 7:20Lord, in the church. And so these men, young and the
- 7:25Lord were appointed by Paul to lead in the church, doesn't call
- 7:29them elders, but he says they do have charge over you.
- 7:32So they have some kind of leadership responsibility and
- 7:35maybe there was conflict between some of the members in the
- 7:38church. So he gives them exhortation as
- 7:40to how it is you are to respond to the leadership.
- 7:44And then he gives them exhortation on how you are to
- 7:46respond to the membership one one another.
- 7:51And then he says this is how the fellowship of the church will be
- 7:57all that God wants it to be. So when it comes to the
- 8:01leadership, in verses 12 and 13, he gives 3 exhortations, 3
- 8:10responses, three ways that you are to deal with them.
- 8:15Number one is appreciation for the person.
- 8:20Number 2 is admiration for his position and #3A preservation of
- 8:30the peace. First of all, he says there
- 8:34needs to be an appreciation for the person.
- 8:39Look what he says. He says very clearly in verse
- 8:4312, We request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who
- 8:48diligently labor among you and have charge over you in the Lord
- 8:53and give you instruction. The reason you appreciate them
- 8:59is because of the fact that they labor among you.
- 9:03They lead you, and they look after you.
- 9:07That's why you appreciate them. And the word appreciate means to
- 9:11to know intimately. And it's really interesting
- 9:13because Paul is exhorting the church to know the leadership
- 9:16intimately. Usually the leaders are exhorted
- 9:19to know the church intimately, but here the church is exhorted
- 9:24to know the leadership intimately.
- 9:26He puts a responsibility on the church to appreciate those who
- 9:31lead them, who are over them in a way that they would know them
- 9:35in an intimate manner. And so he puts the
- 9:38responsibility of the church to know them and to appreciate
- 9:42them. Why?
- 9:43Number one is because they diligently labor among you, not,
- 9:50not over you, but but among you that they're working hard in the
- 9:55word. They're working hard to, to, to
- 9:58treat you in a way that honors the Lord.
- 10:00They're working hard at at leading you in in the proper
- 10:03way. It it was used to Paul earlier
- 10:06in chapter 2 when he said these words in verse #9 for you
- 10:10recall, brethren, are labor and hardship.
- 10:13How working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of
- 10:17you. We proclaim to you the gospel of
- 10:20God. He says, you know, brethren, how
- 10:23we worked hard among you. In fact, in chapter 2, we talked
- 10:26about the model leader. He says, you know this about us.
- 10:29You know that about us. You are witnesses about us.
- 10:31You know us intimately because this is how we behaved among
- 10:35you. And so now he's telling the
- 10:37church at Thessalonica to appreciate those who lead them,
- 10:43who labor among them, that they might understand their
- 10:48responsibility in terms of their walk with the Lord.
- 10:54Now, I've been around a long time, and I've seen a lot of my
- 10:59friends and colleagues in pastoral ministry go through
- 11:04churches unbelievably fast simply because they did not
- 11:11sense any appreciation from those they led.
- 11:17And there are various reasons for that, and I understand that.
- 11:21But I'm a firm believer that you work through those situations
- 11:24that that you stay long where you're at, that you just don't
- 11:28come and because of conflict or because of somebody who's
- 11:31irritated with you or doesn't like you, you end up leaving
- 11:34because you can't get along with people.
- 11:37No, you need to work through those situations.
- 11:40I'm a firm believer that every pastor needs to stay in one
- 11:43church and one church only. I'm a firm believer that I don't
- 11:48think you ought to change churches to churches.
- 11:50I think that's wrong. I think that's instability for
- 11:54the people. I think it's not good for the
- 11:56church. You need to stay where God has
- 12:00called you to minister. But even with some of those men
- 12:05who stayed a long time, they were running out of the church.
- 12:11Take for example, Jonathan Edwards.
- 12:13He was the the author of the Great Awakening, the the
- 12:16greatest revival in American history, probably the greatest
- 12:20theologian of his day. He pastored the same church for
- 12:2523 years. So you're a part of this church
- 12:30and in the 1700s, and you have Jonathan Edwards as your pastor,
- 12:34and he's the greatest theological mind of his day.
- 12:38He's preaching and teaching, working hard, laboring among you
- 12:42to teach you the truth of God's Word.
- 12:44And in the 23rd year of his ministry, the people ran him out
- 12:50of the church, ran him out. They were done with them in the
- 12:57end of this ministry, teaching a dozen Indians the simple gospel
- 13:07message. The church that he pastored for
- 13:1123 years did everything they could to soil his reputation so
- 13:15no one would hire him as their pastor.
- 13:19Think about that. The greatest theological mind of
- 13:24the 17th century or the 1700s was booted from his church.
- 13:31It gets worse. Move to the 1800s, You had the
- 13:36greatest preacher, whoever lived, the Prince of Preachers,
- 13:39Charles Spurgeon. He was a part of his church for
- 13:42over 30 years. He was so popular, he was so
- 13:47great, that when he was done preaching, they would edit his
- 13:50sermons, put them on every ship that left England so that the
- 13:55world would hear the gospel message preached by the Prince
- 13:59of Preachers. Think about that.
- 14:01How long would it take a ship to leave England, to get to where
- 14:05you live? You'd be waiting weeks, months
- 14:10to hear that message that was preached by Spurgeon.
- 14:14But that's what they did. And they ran off all these
- 14:17copies and they put them on the ships and they moved them out
- 14:20all around the world. Here he was pastoring the church
- 14:26in England, and after 30 years of ministry, the Baptist Union
- 14:33voted him out. And you know who the final vote
- 14:39was? It was his associate pastor, who
- 14:44just happened to be his very own brother.
- 14:50And he was booted out after all those years of ministry simply
- 14:56because of a stand on truth and his uncompromising conviction of
- 15:02the on the word of God. Think about that.
- 15:07You see, it's one thing for a man to be in a church for two or
- 15:10three years and move on. It's nothing for a man to be in
- 15:12church for a long period of time, 2 decades, 3 decades, 4
- 15:15decades and the church rise up and say we're done with you, you
- 15:19got to go. And Paul says to those in
- 15:23Thessalonica, I I want you to appreciate those who labor among
- 15:30you. I want you to know them
- 15:33intimately. I want you to value them.
- 15:37I want you to realize the task before them.
- 15:43You see, one of the one of the problems with with laboring
- 15:46among the people is not so much the work involved, it's the
- 15:49loneliness involved. I tell people all the time,
- 15:53listen, you want to go into the pastorate, that's great.
- 15:56But I want you to know you must learn to love loneliness to be a
- 16:01pastor, to be any kind of leader worth any salt.
- 16:08You must learn to love loneliness because you're
- 16:15isolated, you're on an island, you're going to make decisions.
- 16:20Leaders are decision makers. You make a decision.
- 16:24People are not going to like the decision you made.
- 16:27There'll be up in arms against your decision.
- 16:29So you can't make decisions on basing what you do to please
- 16:33people. You do it based on pleasing the
- 16:35Lord and, and sometimes you're going to make decisions that
- 16:38people are not happy with, but it requires great loneliness.
- 16:43Paul experienced that. Remember over in Second Timothy
- 16:47chapter 1, Paul says these words.
- 16:51He says to Timothy, You are aware of the fact that all who
- 16:55are in Asia turned away from me. Here's the apostle Paul all
- 17:03right, and all those in Asia turned away from me, among whom
- 17:09are fragilis and homogeneous. The Lord grant mercy to the
- 17:15House of onociferous, for he often refreshed me and was not
- 17:20ashamed of my chains. In other words, there were those
- 17:24who deserted him because they were ashamed of Paul and ashamed
- 17:27of the fact that he was in prison.
- 17:28But not onosiferous, whose name means bringer of prophet.
- 17:33Onosiferous one to bring prophet to Paul.
- 17:37So he says these words. But when he was in Rome, verse
- 17:4217, he eagerly searched for me and found me.
- 17:47The Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord on that day.
- 17:52And you know very well what services he rendered at Ephesus,
- 17:57Paul says as he's riding away in this Mamertine prison in Rome.
- 18:02Everybody in Asia has forsaken me, but there is one guy on
- 18:08Luciferous who searched for me and found me.
- 18:10The Lord granted mercy to his household, but Paul was isolated
- 18:15because he was in prison. Look what it says earlier in
- 18:19chapter 4. Later in chapter 4, he says in
- 18:22verse #9 make every effort to come to me soon, For Demas,
- 18:26having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to
- 18:30Thessalonica. Demas deserted him, He left him.
- 18:36Demas was a disciple of the apostle Paul, but there were so
- 18:41many people that would desert him and leave him isolated.
- 18:47And the later it says this in verse #16 at my first offense,
- 18:51no one supported me. No one but all deserted me.
- 19:00Everybody left me. I was all alone.
- 19:04May it not be counted against them.
- 19:06This, this is so good. Listen.
- 19:08But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me so that through
- 19:12me the proclamation might be fully accomplished, and that all
- 19:15the Gentiles might hear, and I was rescued out of the lion's
- 19:20mouth. The Lord will rescue me from
- 19:22every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly
- 19:26Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and
- 19:29ever. Amen.
- 19:32So here's Paul at the end of his ministry, and he's in this
- 19:35memory team prison in Rome, and he's talking to young Timothy
- 19:38because Timothy needs to be prepared for the fact that he's
- 19:42going to be deserted. He's going to be left alone.
- 19:45It's going to happen. If you're going to lead, this is
- 19:48what takes place. But know this, that the Lord
- 19:52stood with me. The Lord will always stand with
- 19:55the leader who stands alone, and the Lord will stand with that
- 19:59man and rescue him as he rescued the apostle Paul and
- 20:03strengthened him to God be the glory.
- 20:07And so you got to realize that the labor in the ministry is not
- 20:11so much the, the preparation, the counseling, the teaching,
- 20:14the late hours. The Paul would say to those in
- 20:17in Ephesus. I labored day and night with
- 20:20tears. Acts Chapter 20, verse #31
- 20:25Because I wanted you to hear the gospel.
- 20:28And that's that's hard work, that's labor, that's strenuous
- 20:31work. But but the hardest work is when
- 20:34your friends desert you and they leave you and they walk away
- 20:39from the ministry and they want nothing to do with you anymore.
- 20:43And Paul experienced that all the time.
- 20:49And so Paul says, and 1st, that's the way it's five.
- 20:53I want you to appreciate those who, who labor among you.
- 21:02And then he says this. Not only do they labor among
- 21:07you, he says, but he says they have charge over you in the
- 21:15Lord. They have charge over you in the
- 21:22Lord. In other words, they stand
- 21:23before you. They, they stand ahead of you.
- 21:28Why? Because they're examples.
- 21:30They're leaders. See all, all, all leaders are,
- 21:34are examples. I, I want you to appreciate them
- 21:37because they set themselves up as standing before you as
- 21:43examples that they're, they're leading you.
- 21:44You can't, you can't lead unless you're, you're in front.
- 21:48And so that they're in front, so you can see their lives.
- 21:52That's just so important. That's why Paul told Timothy in
- 21:54First Timothy 412. Timothy, I know you're young,
- 21:56but let no man look down upon your youth, but be thou an
- 21:59example in your life, in your love, in your, in your faith, in
- 22:04your, in your purity, in your devotion.
- 22:07Make sure you set yourself up as an example for everyone to see,
- 22:12because that's the power of leadership.
- 22:14It's influence, it's impact, right?
- 22:16You know what? This has fathers, right?
- 22:18You can, you can tell your children all kinds of things,
- 22:21but if you don't lead by example, then they're not going
- 22:24to follow. You have to lead by example.
- 22:27You have to show them the way to go.
- 22:30Just can't tell them the way to go.
- 22:32You got to show them the way to go.
- 22:34And this is what this is what Paul does.
- 22:37He says, look, they are those who who stand before you, they
- 22:42lead you, not only the labor among you, but but they lead
- 22:46you, they're in front. And so learn to know them
- 22:48intimately. But that's just so important.
- 22:50Let me give you an example. Number of years ago, a lady came
- 22:55up to me after our first service and she says, you know, I, I've
- 22:58heard you talk about your wife over the years and say things
- 23:02about her. But but I've been coming to the
- 23:04church for a long time, but I've never ever seen your wife.
- 23:10So I just am curious as a pastor, why is that I never see
- 23:17your wife? I said that's a great question.
- 23:21I said my wife, she works in the two and three-year old in the
- 23:25first service. That's why you don't see her.
- 23:29I said I assume you only come to the first service.
- 23:32She said yes, I just come to the first service.
- 23:35I said if you would come to the second service you would see her
- 23:38sitting down front with me. I said better yet, you could go
- 23:42to the first service and serve alongside of her in the twos and
- 23:47threes. Then you would know her
- 23:50intimately and then you could come and worship beside us in
- 23:56the second service and you would see her.
- 24:00Or even you could come on Wednesday nights.
- 24:04Do you come on Wednesdays? She says no.
- 24:05I said, well, if you came on Wednesdays, you would see her in
- 24:09the Bible study. You would see her here.
- 24:13I said it's important that you ask the question because as a
- 24:18leader, if you don't see my wife, there is a problem.
- 24:24As an elder, if you don't see my wife, that's the problem, right?
- 24:31Why? Because you need to see how we
- 24:32interact, how we worship together, how we pray together.
- 24:38You need to see the physical affection that we have one for
- 24:41another that provides an example.
- 24:43You need to be able to see my children.
- 24:47Why? Because it's the leader.
- 24:49You're in a bubble, right? And everything about the leader
- 24:52is magnified in the bubble. And so you have to be able to
- 24:56say, look, follow me as as I follow Christ.
- 25:01And so as people look into the bubble, everything is magnified
- 25:05and bigger than than normal. But you must be able to see the
- 25:08leader's wife and you must be able to see the leader's
- 25:10children because you want to know how he functions at home,
- 25:15right? Does he lead his family?
- 25:17Are his children in submission to his authority that he follow
- 25:20his leadership right. Why because they are set before
- 25:24you. They are examples, Paul says I
- 25:27want you to appreciate these men Why?
- 25:29Because they labor among you and they lead you.
- 25:31They're in front of you. Watch their lives, see their
- 25:34lives, because you have to examine their lives and examine
- 25:38them in light of the Scripture and, and to see the man's wife
- 25:41and to see the man's children and see how he interacts with
- 25:44them. Because that's the essence of
- 25:46leadership, right? Because if a leader's
- 25:50effectiveness at home is minimized, then the ministry in
- 25:56the church will never be maximized.
- 25:59It will always be minimized. People need to be able to see.
- 26:06And so therefore I told the lady, I said, that's a great
- 26:09question that holds me accountable and I want to be
- 26:11accountable to you for that. That's great.
- 26:14But I said, if you come to the second service, my wife will be
- 26:17right down here with me sitting right here and you won't miss
- 26:22her and you can, I'll introduce her to you.
- 26:26And a couple of weeks later, she decided to come to the second
- 26:29service and I introduced her to my wife.
- 26:33She didn't get involved in serving at all, but she just
- 26:36came to 1 service. And that's OK, at least at least
- 26:38she came, right? But you see that that just
- 26:41reminded me of the accountability that elders have
- 26:44that leaders have in the church to make sure that they are out
- 26:48front leading the way in their marriage with their children,
- 26:51seen by the people of the church, so that the church can
- 26:55observe the leadership of the man in his family.
- 27:00That is so incredibly important. And Paul says these men are out
- 27:08in front. Appreciate them for their way
- 27:13they lead you. Appreciate them for the way they
- 27:15labor among you and pre appreciate them.
- 27:18Thirdly, simply because they looked after you.
- 27:23He says they they give you instruction.
- 27:26In other words, they put into mind those things you need to
- 27:32know. That's very important.
- 27:35Appreciate them because they're going to correct you, they're
- 27:39going to instruct you, they're going to teach you.
- 27:43The reason you appreciate your leaders is because they want to,
- 27:46they want to feed you the word of God.
- 27:48This is so important. You see these, these are new
- 27:51believers, right? And, and, and, and Thessalonica.
- 27:54Well, what did new believers need?
- 27:55What, what does your baby need? You, you, you have a newborn
- 27:58baby and the baby comes out and, and, and what is the most
- 28:01important thing your baby needs? Your hugs.
- 28:05Nope. Your kisses.
- 28:08Nope. A new blanket, a new car seat, a
- 28:13new stroller, a new bed. Those are all great things, but
- 28:19that's not what they need them. What do they need the most?
- 28:21They got to eat. If you don't feed them, they're
- 28:25going to die. If you don't hug them, they're
- 28:28still going to live as long as they're fed.
- 28:31If they have the bat, a terrible one wheeled stroller, they'll
- 28:36still survive, right? If you don't kiss them, they're
- 28:41still going to make it to the next day.
- 28:43But if you don't feed them, they're dead.
- 28:48You got to feed them. That's what babies need.
- 28:52And Paul says you appreciate them because they're going to
- 28:55instruct you. They're going to put in the in
- 28:57the into your mind the things you need to know in order to
- 29:00live the way you need to live for the glory and honor of of
- 29:03the king. And so you appreciate them for
- 29:09that. So many times people are
- 29:13unappreciative of the fact that a leader would come to them and
- 29:17and confront them on an issue or talk to them about an issue and
- 29:22they get offended. But they only care for your
- 29:25soul. They're looking out for you.
- 29:27They want what's best for you and your family.
- 29:31So Paul says appreciate them. Appreciate the person because he
- 29:35laborers among you. He he leads you, he's out in
- 29:40front and he looks after you. He looks after your soul.
- 29:45That's why he instructs you and teaches you and put things into
- 29:49your mind so you'll understand the way to go.
- 29:56So there's needs to be an appreciation for the person and
- 29:58then an affirmation of his position.
- 30:03Look what he says. He says these words in verse 13
- 30:08and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their
- 30:13work, their position, what it is they're doing.
- 30:20There needs to be an elevation of them because not the person,
- 30:24but because of their position, because the word God has put
- 30:27them that that that's that's where they're at.
- 30:30Esteem them very highly because of the work that God's given to
- 30:35them. No, no, Remember Paul in Acts 23
- 30:39when he spoke out against Agrippa.
- 30:44Remember what he says in Acts 23 verse #5 he says, I was not
- 30:49aware, brethren, that he was the high priest.
- 30:53For it is written, you shall not speak evil of a ruler of your
- 31:01people. Paul apologized because he
- 31:06didn't know that Ananias was the the high priest.
- 31:10He spoke rudely to him. If God thinks that speaking
- 31:17rudely to an unbelieving ruler or official is wrong, what do
- 31:26you think he thinks about those in the church who speak evil of
- 31:32those who lead in the church? Think about that.
- 31:40So Paul apologized, I was wrong. This is God put him in the
- 31:46position, God has him there, and I was wrong to speak rudely to
- 31:50him. Well, how much do you think it
- 31:54would be in the mind of God if you were to speak rudely, rudely
- 32:00of those that God had placed in the position of leadership in
- 32:04the church? He says esteem them highly for
- 32:08their work's sake. What are they doing?
- 32:11They're they're in the work of the Lord.
- 32:12They're they're serving the Lord.
- 32:15A A number of years ago, John MacArthur was asked why he loved
- 32:20the church. And so he began to to write the
- 32:24reasons why he loved the church on a napkin in a restaurant.
- 32:31And the very first thing he wrote was this.
- 32:34He says #1 I love being a pastor because the church is the only
- 32:41institution Christ promised to build and bless.
- 32:46Christ is only doing one thing in the world.
- 32:50I know that might be shocking to say, maybe sounds a little
- 32:54oversimplified, but it's actually the truth.
- 32:57Christ is only doing one thing in the world, and that is He is
- 33:01building His church. God is through the Holy Spirit
- 33:05under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, calling out of people
- 33:08for His name. The part of history that matters
- 33:13is the redemptive part. All the rest of human history is
- 33:18simply backdrop. It's Decor.
- 33:22It's the staging for the real drama, which is the drama of
- 33:27redemption and how exhilarating it is to be in the middle of
- 33:31that, to be a part of the only thing that Christ is doing in
- 33:35the world and that is building his church.
- 33:38If I want to be at the epicenter of what God is moving, then I
- 33:42need to be in the church. God's purpose in the world is to
- 33:46call to Himself a redeemed people who will live to the
- 33:49praise of His glory, to build His church, to build the body.
- 33:53And there is no greater calling possible, conceivable than to be
- 33:57a servant of Christ and under shepherd in the church.
- 34:01It is of great comfort and great encouragement and great joy and
- 34:06produces great gratitude in my heart that God has given me a
- 34:09small part to play in the work of Christ, to build His church.
- 34:14I wouldn't, he says, stoop to do anything else.
- 34:22What a statement. I'm in the epicenter of what God
- 34:26is doing this. God's only doing one thing.
- 34:28He's only involved in one building project, the church.
- 34:33That's it. Why would I do anything else?
- 34:35Why try to accomplish anything else?
- 34:39I'm involved in doing what God Himself is building.
- 34:44He loved the church. He loved being a pastor of the
- 34:47church. So for 50-6 years he remained
- 34:50the pastor at Grace Community Church until God called him
- 34:52home. That was his mission in life.
- 34:57That should be the the the the church's leaders response and
- 35:02everything. I love being a pastor because
- 35:04this is what God is doing in the world and I'm at the center of
- 35:08it. This is so great, so grand.
- 35:11What? Who can do anything better than
- 35:13this? That's why it says if any man
- 35:16desires the office of an elder, he desires a noble work, a noble
- 35:25work. Why?
- 35:27Because you're involved in the building project of the Lord God
- 35:32Almighty. And therefore Paul says, I want
- 35:37you to to admire these these people for their work's sake,
- 35:44for the position that God's given to them.
- 35:46You might not like the person, but admire the position of the
- 35:51person that's there. Appreciate the person, get to
- 35:55know him, get to understand them, get to know his family.
- 36:01Appreciate that person, but admire his position because God
- 36:11has placed him there. And then he says a presentation
- 36:15of the of the peace. He says these words so good.
- 36:20Live in peace with one another, live in peace, maintain peace.
- 36:32The unity that you have in Christ, you're at peace with God
- 36:35because you have the peace of God.
- 36:38Therefore, manifest that peace one toward another by
- 36:42endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit and the bond of
- 36:44peace. Ephesians 4, three, because
- 36:46that's what we do. This is how you preserve the
- 36:49peace. How?
- 36:51By by admiring the position of the leader and appreciation the
- 36:56person who leads and therefore there needs to be a preservation
- 37:02of the peace. You know Satan is is is at work
- 37:05in the church in the series you did when we did it now is it was
- 37:11a whole series of 15 weeks series, 17 weeks series on the
- 37:13church and that the church is a playground of the enemy of God.
- 37:17It is Satan wants to destroy the testimony of the church.
- 37:23If he can get you bickering and arguing and, and, and looking
- 37:26down on one another and, and, and being upset with one
- 37:29another. If, if, if he can get you doing
- 37:31that, he can mar the testimony of the church.
- 37:36There's a warfare going on. That's why Paul says over in, in
- 37:39Romans 12, these words he says in Romans 12 verse number #9 he
- 37:46says let love be without hypocrisy.
- 37:51In other words, no hypocritical kind of love.
- 37:55Don't come on Sunday and act one way and then go on Monday and
- 37:59act another way. Your love needs to be genuine
- 38:01and needs to be sincere. So when you come to church and
- 38:05you gather with the people of God, make sure that that what
- 38:07you're demonstrating in your facial expressions, in your
- 38:11words, in your, your relationship with one another is
- 38:14true and genuine, not fake and phony.
- 38:16We got a lot of fake people in the church today.
- 38:20They come and they put on a on on their Sunday face on Sunday
- 38:26morning, but their Sunday evening face is not one you want
- 38:30to see because it's diametrically opposed to the one
- 38:34you saw on Sunday morning. Say, let love be without
- 38:37hypocrisy. A poor one is evil.
- 38:39Clean to what is good. Be devoted to one another in
- 38:41brotherly love. Give preference to one another
- 38:43in honor, not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit,
- 38:47serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, persevering in
- 38:50tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the
- 38:53Saints, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you.
- 38:57Bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice.
- 39:00Weep with those who weep. Be the same mind toward one
- 39:03another. Do not be haughty in mind, but
- 39:05associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own
- 39:10estimation. Associate with the lowly.
- 39:12You ever notice that we come to church?
- 39:14Who do we associate with? Our friends, our friends.
- 39:19We we, we sit with our friends, we talk to our friends.
- 39:21And then there are people that sit alone all by themselves who
- 39:27kind of come in and and go out without anybody ever talking to
- 39:33them and imposter. Make sure you associate with the
- 39:37lowly, those who are not the high position people who would
- 39:43be good if if every one of us was to, to pinpoint someone
- 39:47sitting by themselves, coming to church by themselves, leaving by
- 39:52themselves and going after them and said, Hey, just want to
- 39:57introduce myself to you. I'd like to take you to lunch
- 40:00today if you're you're available.
- 40:02Just so that we can get to know one another.
- 40:05I don't want you to feel like you're all alone here at the
- 40:07church. Associate with the with the
- 40:12lowly. It goes on to say, do not be
- 40:18wise in your own estimation. That's just so good.
- 40:22We, we just think ourselves are so grand.
- 40:26Don't we think of ourselves that way?
- 40:29We think we are so cool. We are so unbelievable.
- 40:34And Paul says, you know what, you've overestimated who you
- 40:38are. Don't think that way.
- 40:42Think in a lowly, humble manner. Having said all this, I want to
- 40:53conclude with these words. I have been your pastor for just
- 41:02about 31 years, and in those 31 years, I want to let you know
- 41:12that I have never, ever been under appreciated.
- 41:19I've never been undervalued. I have never been treated
- 41:29inappropriately in 31 years. That is a testimony to you as a
- 41:38church and your commitment to verses 12 and 13, the First
- 41:45Thessalonians chapter 5. Not one time in 31 years have I
- 41:52ever wanted to go anywhere else. Not once, not one time in 31
- 42:00years have I ever been discouraged.
- 42:04Not once. Why?
- 42:07Because there's something about the church that you have
- 42:13exemplified. So when my wife and I, I were
- 42:19away this week on our anniversary getaway, I have to
- 42:23get up early in the morning and and I would study.
- 42:28I begin to write down certain things that I have seen in our
- 42:34church, never been under appreciated, undervalued or
- 42:41under admired for that matter. But I have witnessed first hand
- 42:51your submission to God's message and His authority.
- 42:58I've witnessed that. I've seen that in you.
- 43:04I, I've seen you embrace the message, as hard as it may be
- 43:09for some of you, but to embrace it and say, this is God's word,
- 43:15this is his authority. And, and you're willing to
- 43:19submit to the authority of God in your life.
- 43:22It's not me you're submitting to.
- 43:24It's, it's the word of God that you submitted to.
- 43:28And so I sit as your pastor for 31 years and, and, and I see
- 43:32your submission to the message of God and its authority in your
- 43:36life. Are you perfect at it?
- 43:38None of us are. But do you want to move in that
- 43:42direction? Absolutely you do.
- 43:47That's why you're here. And then I, I I've also
- 43:52witnessed your adoration, your adoration for our Master and his
- 44:03glory. You love the Lord, you love him.
- 44:14Do you love him perfectly? No.
- 44:18Do you love him sometimes, like Peter?
- 44:19Yeah. And Peter said, Peter, do you
- 44:22love me? Yeah.
- 44:23I kind of like you a lot, but you love the Lord.
- 44:29And so for 31 years I have witnessed the the church's
- 44:33Christ Community Church's adoration, adoration of the
- 44:39Master for his glory. So the Bible says let there be
- 44:45glory in the church. You don't want Ichabod written
- 44:49across your church. The glory of the Lord has
- 44:51departed. In other words, there's no
- 44:54manifestation of God's presence within the assembly.
- 44:59So I've sat back and, and I and I have watched not, not just
- 45:02your submission to the message and it's authority, not just
- 45:09your adoration to the Master and His glory, but I've also
- 45:16witnessed your demonstration of your maturity as you seek to
- 45:24grow in your walk with the Lord each and every week.
- 45:30I, I am truly a blessed man. I, I could, I could say as, as
- 45:38Paul would say in, in First Thessalonians chapter 1, I
- 45:42could, I could say, I give thanks to God always for all of
- 45:46you making mention of you in our prayers constantly bearing in
- 45:49mind your work of faith and labor of love.
- 45:51Is that fastest of hope? And you excel still.
- 45:55All the more so as I talk about leadership in the church, as I
- 46:00talk about your response to the leadership in the church.
- 46:04I've experienced that. I've seen it in action.
- 46:11I've witnessed that. And I am.
- 46:17I am so blessed to be here. I am honored to be your pastor.
- 46:27I am honored that you've allowed me to come week after week after
- 46:32week after week. I am honored that you sit and
- 46:37let me repeat things over and over and over and over again,
- 46:41week after week after week after week.
- 46:46But I am truly a blessed man. God has done exceedingly,
- 46:54abundantly above all that I could ever ask or think.
- 46:59And I'm grateful to you as a church.
- 47:04I'm grateful that the Lord has allowed me to be here and be
- 47:08your pastor and will continue to be here for as long as I can
- 47:12breathe. I can still stand up.
- 47:16My mind is still right, but I am blessed and I just want to say
- 47:24thank you. Thank you for fulfilling First
- 47:29Thessalonians 512 and 13 because that's what you do.
- 47:38And I would be, it would, it would be wrong for me not to let
- 47:43you know how God has used each and everyone of you in my life.
- 47:53And for that I will always be grateful to the Lord.
- 47:58So today, I applaud you. I thank you for your willingness
- 48:07to do what God's Word says. Let me pray with you, Father, we
- 48:12thank you for today. I thank you that I can be here.
- 48:18I thank you, Lord, that I had the opportunity to be here, that
- 48:2431 years ago you opened the door for this to happen.
- 48:30And through all the years, people have come and people have
- 48:33gone and, and they continue to come and they continue to go.
- 48:37But you've sustained the ministry, You have maintained
- 48:41the ministry. You have done great and
- 48:44wonderful things in the lives of people.
- 48:49We could focus on the negatives. That doesn't do you any good.
- 48:54But to focus on all the positives and to realize what
- 48:59you're doing is, is fabulous. You've healed marriages, You've
- 49:07changed lives. You've saved souls.
- 49:11You have brought rebellious children home.
- 49:15You have answered prayer, You have done so many things, but
- 49:23what I am thankful for, Lord, is that what you have done in the
- 49:25lives of your people, they would grow to maturity in Christ and
- 49:32wanting to grow even all the more.
- 49:35For that I'm grateful and I thank you and praise you for
- 49:41what you have done and what you are doing and what you are going
- 49:44to continue to do because of who you are.
- 49:49So we thank you Lord, anticipate your soon return.
- 49:54Until that time, may we be found faithful in our service of the
- 49:57King in Jesus name, Amen.
