- 0:00Chapter 44 from the book of Isaiah.
- 0:03First, a prayer, dear God, please give us wisdom and
- 0:07insight as we read through the scripture in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:13This one's titled Israel, the Chosen, and it starts out, but
- 0:18now listen, Jacob, my servant Israel, whom I've have have
- 0:23chosen, This is what the Lord says, He who made you, who
- 0:28formed you in the womb, and who will keep and who will help you.
- 0:32Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant, just you on and I'll
- 0:38tell you what that says. Just you on means the upright 1
- 0:42and that is Israel. So that's another word that's
- 0:46used a few times in the Bible. Just you run whom I have chosen,
- 0:52for I will pour water on the thirsty land and streams on the
- 0:57dry ground. I will pour out my spirit on
- 1:01your offspring and my blessing on your descendants.
- 1:08They will spring up like grass in a Meadow, like Poplar trees
- 1:13by flowing streams. Some will say I belong to the
- 1:17Lord, others will call themselves by the name of Jacob.
- 1:21Still others will write on their hand the Lords and will take the
- 1:25name Israel. So one thing that I got after
- 1:29reading all of that was that the Spirit changes people.
- 1:33Just like Jesus said that we must be born again, born of the
- 1:37Spirit to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 1:39God is so merciful that even though Israel has turned against
- 1:43God or turned their backs to God so many times over and over
- 1:46throughout history, God is still promising them, I will pour out
- 1:52my spirit on your offspring and my blessing on your descendants.
- 1:57So Israel will still, they will, they will receive God's spirit
- 2:03at some point in the future. And the blessing of God, when
- 2:07Jesus returns and reigns on earth for 1000 years, that's
- 2:13when all of this will will begin again.
- 2:17So there is a restoration for Israel.
- 2:21This is what the Lord says, Israel's King and Redeemer, the
- 2:25Lord Almighty. I am the 1st and I am the last.
- 2:30Apart from me, there is no God. So this is also important
- 2:35because this is when we have to. In Isaiah he refers to this a
- 2:39couple times, 1st I guess in this this chapter 44 and then
- 2:44again in chapter 48 Isaiah says listen to me Jacob Israel, whom
- 2:49I have called I am he, I am the 1st and I am the last.
- 2:54So of course this we understand is the Lord.
- 2:57This is God speaking. So then we get to the Book of
- 3:02Revelation in chapter 1. When I saw him, I fell at his
- 3:08feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on
- 3:11me and said, do not be afraid. I am the 1st and the last.
- 3:18So that's really interesting. So listen to the rest of it.
- 3:23I am the living one. I was dead and now look, I am
- 3:29alive forever and ever and I hold the keys of death and
- 3:35hades. So that I think is really
- 3:39important because right the next, the very next line, it
- 3:43says I am the living one. I was dead.
- 3:47God the Father was never dead. Jesus was dead.
- 3:51And he says, and now look, I am alive forever and ever, and I
- 3:55hold the keys of death and Hades.
- 3:58So at one point Satan had the power, power over death or some
- 4:03sort of level of authority over death.
- 4:05But with Jesus's death on the cross and resurrection, he took
- 4:10the keys of death in Hades like the eternal death away so that
- 4:16people will not be eternally separated from God, but have the
- 4:21the possibility of being in eternity with God based upon our
- 4:27our decision. So let's see what else our our
- 4:32decision, our surrender and receiving the Holy Spirit
- 4:35because Jesus did the the the impossible for us like his death
- 4:40on the cross as the perfect sacrifice was a ransom.
- 4:43And we will also talk about that in a little bit too.
- 4:48So who then is like me? Let him proclaim it.
- 4:53Let Him declare and lay out before me what has happened
- 4:57since I established my ancient people and what is yet to come.
- 5:01Yes, let them foretell what will come.
- 5:05So again, prophecy has always been a part of God's interaction
- 5:10with mankind. He has shared future with his
- 5:15prophets and told people of things that would be to come.
- 5:20And I believe God still does that today.
- 5:22There are definitely not all of the people who say that they
- 5:27have a word from God, truly have a word from God.
- 5:31But you know, whether it's just their ignorance of knowing that
- 5:35or they're trying to be deceitful, who knows?
- 5:38But God will know. And I just, I was listening to a
- 5:43very interesting study today that was talking about the word
- 5:49Messiah that's used in scripture and the translation of it.
- 5:53And a lot of times the word Messiah doesn't exclusively
- 5:59refer to Jesus, but it refers to the anointed 1.
- 6:06And in the past there have been, you know, kings that were
- 6:09anointed. So some of our translations of
- 6:12Scripture. It's really interesting.
- 6:15And this was relevant to the book of Daniel, and it had to do
- 6:19with the 70 sevens. And it was a very interesting
- 6:23commentary on that chapter, which I'm not going to go
- 6:27through right now because it has nothing to do with what we're
- 6:30talking about right here. But it's just interesting that
- 6:34we really do need to dive into looking at something like
- 6:39blueletterbible.org for verses when we're really trying to
- 6:43understand or when there's a complicated verse that we're
- 6:46trying to understand something that doesn't make sense to us to
- 6:50look at what was the original translation because the original
- 6:55Hebrew or Greek, depending on if we're in the Old Testament or if
- 6:59we're in the New Testament. But that opens, that just
- 7:02enlightens us in a lot of ways. Anyway, I will continue on
- 7:05Scripture. He says do not tremble, do not
- 7:08be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and
- 7:10foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses.
- 7:14Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other rock.
- 7:20I know not one. All who make idols are nothing,
- 7:25and the things they treasure are worthless.
- 7:28Those who would speak up for them are blind.
- 7:32They are ignorant to their own shame.
- 7:34Who shapes the God and casts an idol which can profit nothing?
- 7:38People who do that will be put to shame.
- 7:41Such Craftsman are only human beings.
- 7:44Let them all come together and take their stand.
- 7:47They will be brought down to terror and shame.
- 7:51The blacksmith takes a tool and works with with it in the coals.
- 7:57He shapes an idol with hammers. He forges it with the might of
- 8:01his arm. He gets hungry and loses his
- 8:04strength. He drinks no water and grows
- 8:06faint. The Carpenter measures with a
- 8:08line and he makes an outline with a marker.
- 8:11He roughs it in with chisels and he marks it with compasses.
- 8:15He shapes it up in a human form, human form in all its glory,
- 8:19that it may dwell in a shrine. He cut down the Cedars, or
- 8:24perhaps took a Cypress or oak. He let it grow among the trees
- 8:28of the forest, or planted a pine and the rain made it grow.
- 8:31It is used for fuel, as burnt, for burning.
- 8:35Some of it he takes and warms himself.
- 8:38He Kindles a fire and bakes bread, but he also fashions a
- 8:43God and worships it. He makes an idol and bows down
- 8:47to it. Half of the wood he burns in the
- 8:49fire over it. He prepares his meal.
- 8:52He roasts his meat and eats his fill.
- 8:55He also warms himself and says, ah, I am warm.
- 8:58I see the fire from the rest. He makes a God his idol.
- 9:03He bows down to it and worships it.
- 9:05He prays to it and says, Save me, you are my God.
- 9:10They know nothing, they understand nothing.
- 9:12Their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds
- 9:15closed so they cannot understand.
- 9:19No one stops to think. No one has the knowledge or
- 9:23understanding to say. Half of it I use for fuel.
- 9:26I even baked bread over its coals.
- 9:28I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing
- 9:32from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of
- 9:35wood? Such a person feeds on ashes.
- 9:39A deluded heart misleads him. He cannot save himself or say,
- 9:44is this thing in my right hand a lie?
- 9:49It just goes to show. That not goes to show, but God
- 9:54is communicating. You know, God is a living being
- 9:59and not something that we just made-up in our minds like he is
- 10:04real. God is real.
- 10:07Remember these things, Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant.
- 10:12I have made you. You are my servant, Israel, I
- 10:15will not forget you. I have swept away your offenses
- 10:19like a cloud. Your sins like the morning mist
- 10:23return to me, for I have redeemed you.
- 10:27So again, this is where I think about Jesus because Jesus is the
- 10:34one that redeemed. You know, how else did Israel
- 10:37become redeemed? The sacrifices that they were
- 10:41making it, it was only temporary because every year they had to
- 10:45do it. It was never a permanent thing.
- 10:47There was never a, a permanent atonement for their sins.
- 10:52But Jesus is the one who did that, and Jesus was the ransom.
- 11:01And in Matthew 20, verse 28, just as the Son of Man did not
- 11:06come to be served, even though he was the Son of God, He didn't
- 11:10come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom
- 11:15for many. And then in the Gospel of Mark
- 11:18chapter 10 verse 45 for even the Son of Man did not come to be
- 11:23served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
- 11:29And then in first Timothy chapter 2 verse six, he says it
- 11:33also who who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
- 11:37This has now been witnessed at the proper time.
- 11:42And then Hebrews Chapter 9 verse 15 says for this reason Christ
- 11:48is the mediator of a new covenant.
- 11:51We talked about a new covenant, I think last chapter, that those
- 11:54who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance,
- 12:00God's Kingdom, now that he has died as a ransom to set free,
- 12:06set them free from sins committed under the first
- 12:09covenant. So the first covenant were the
- 12:13the laws, the 10 commandments that God gave Moses on Mount
- 12:16Sinai and nobody could keep them.
- 12:21And so that is why Christ, that is why Jesus came and he died on
- 12:27the cross so that he could break that curse.
- 12:30He could become the sacrifice that was required so that we
- 12:35would not be under the first covenant.
- 12:39And even God says that. I mean, I think like I said just
- 12:41a few chapters ago, it was prophesied that he would make a
- 12:45new covenant with the people. And that new covenant is Jesus.
- 12:49And so he had his plan for how it would happen.
- 12:55That's why Jesus willingly went on the cross.
- 12:58That's why that's why everything happened.
- 13:00He came with a purpose to tell people about God's Kingdom and
- 13:04to die on the cross so that we could someday be in God's
- 13:10Kingdom with him as brothers and sisters.
- 13:14So I'll continue, but it is the Lord has redeemed Jacob.
- 13:21Yes, Jesus has. He displays his glory in Israel.
- 13:25So actually I jumped because there's a couple times where it
- 13:28talks about redeemed. So he says return to me.
- 13:31God says return to me, for I have redeemed you.
- 13:34Sing for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done this.
- 13:38Shout aloud, you earth beneath, burst into song, you mountains,
- 13:42you forest and all your trees. For the Lord has redeemed Jacob.
- 13:47He displays his glory in Israel. One day Jesus will reign as king
- 13:53out of Israel, out of Jerusalem, so Jerusalem to be inhabited.
- 13:59This is what the Lord says, your Redeemer who formed you in the
- 14:03womb. So not only is Jesus a part of
- 14:09creation from the beginning, but it's talking about your Redeemer
- 14:14who formed you in the womb. And the Redeemer is God.
- 14:18Jesus is the Son of God says I am the Lord, the maker of all
- 14:23things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the
- 14:27earth by myself, who foils the signs of false prophets.
- 14:33So that's something else that we should pay attention to.
- 14:36If there's a false prophet, then if the if it's a false prophet
- 14:45that's coming and their plans don't turn out, it's God who
- 14:50made it not turn out because, well, maybe one, it wasn't even
- 14:56true. So maybe God didn't even have to
- 14:57do it. But if it's a false prophet or
- 15:00they're telling a lie, he can, he's just, he has no purpose for
- 15:04them. So they're just speaking on
- 15:05their own. And but it's God who makes it
- 15:08not happen and makes fools of the diviners, who overthrows the
- 15:14learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense.
- 15:19So a lot of it's interesting because it talks about really
- 15:22about how wise people are going to be looked at as foolish when
- 15:29all of this is revealed at the return of Jesus.
- 15:33And then he, he continues to say who carries out the words of his
- 15:38servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers.
- 15:42So God gives if God gives a word and somebody believes it to be,
- 15:48if it comes true, it's truly from God.
- 15:51If it doesn't come true, it's not from God.
- 15:54So that's how true and false prophets can be recognized,
- 15:59whether they their predictions come true or not.
- 16:03Who says of Jerusalem it shall be inhabited?
- 16:08Who says of Jerusalem it shall be inhabited?
- 16:11Of the towns of Judah they shall be rebuilt, and of the ruins I
- 16:17will restore them. So God is going to restore the
- 16:23ruins of Israel. Who says to the watery deep, Be
- 16:29dry, and I will dry up your streams.
- 16:32Who says of Cyrus? He is my shepherd and will
- 16:37accomplish all that I please. He will say of Jerusalem, let it
- 16:42be rebuilt, and of the Temple, let its foundations be laid.
- 16:47Now this one's really interesting and I didn't realize
- 16:49this until I read what was in the study Bible.
- 16:51So I have to read this again because this is really
- 16:55impressive prophecy here. So who was the Cyrus?
- 17:00Cyrus the Great ruled over Persia from 5:59 to 5:30 BC.
- 17:08The fact that Isaiah announced him by name more than 100 years
- 17:14before his birth is one of the most amazing instances of a
- 17:19predictive prophecy in Scripture.
- 17:23It is also a major reason why scholars who are skeptical of
- 17:26such predictions have assumed that someone other than Isaiah
- 17:30must have written chapters 40 through 66.
- 17:34So to me, that seems like somebody of weak faith that is
- 17:39doubting these things. But God tells his prophets and
- 17:45these things happen and just like Jesus, as we've seen in
- 17:49several chapters where Jesus was talked about 700 BC, so almost
- 17:553000 years ago he was talked about and you know, like 700
- 18:02years before he was ever here on earth.
- 18:05I think that's even greater than 100 years when he talked about
- 18:08Cyrus. And then just the whole plan for
- 18:12what's going to happen when you think about the thousands of
- 18:16years that this had been foretell foretold what will
- 18:20happen in our future. So this is actually I finished
- 18:26reading chapter 44 and there's just a couple more questions and
- 18:30answers that I'll read and then we'll wrap it up.
- 18:33So this one is not going to be as long as the past ones have
- 18:35been. So how would Cyrus accomplish
- 18:38all that God pleased? Whereas previous empires had
- 18:42dominated the ancient Near East with military might, Cyrus
- 18:46combined might with diplomacy. He allowed peoples from various
- 18:49captive nations to return home and set up a decentralized
- 18:53government. God used this leader's rise to
- 18:56power to save his people, as Cyrus decreed that the people of
- 19:01Judah would return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple.
- 19:05And that's documented in Isaiah chapter 45 and Ezra chapter 1,
- 19:12and also chapter 6. It's talked about as well.
- 19:17So then there's a couple things like how can we know if a person
- 19:20is a true prophet? The most immediate way to
- 19:22determine if a person is a true prophet is to see his or her
- 19:26word to see if his or her words align themselves with the rest
- 19:32of Scripture. You can also identify a true
- 19:35prophet by whether or not his or her predictions are fulfilled
- 19:40over time. A prophet's truthfulness can can
- 19:44also be determined by whether or not he or she influences people
- 19:50to worship and obey God. Is this quote godly person
- 19:55always looking for something new in his religious experience?
- 20:01Is she getting a lot of attention for her predictions?
- 20:05Another consideration is the value of a prediction.
- 20:09Will it deepen your walk with the Lord, or is it just vain
- 20:13speculation? Does it build up the church or
- 20:17call into question someone else's spirituality?
- 20:23Then how had God redeemed Israel?
- 20:25Redeem means to buy back, and the Word is commonly used as an
- 20:29expression for God's deliverance in general and His rescue from
- 20:33the penalty of sin in particular.
- 20:36Here, God bought back his people from the penalty that their sin
- 20:41would have imposed on them. How can mountains and forests
- 20:45burst into song? This is personification, A
- 20:48literary technique common in the Bible, especially in Psalms in
- 20:52Isaiah. Obviously inanimate objects
- 20:55don't sing the way people do, but the wonder of creation can
- 20:59shout out in quotations as a testimony to the awesome power
- 21:04and majesty of God. And that concludes chapter 44.
- 21:09So I hope you come back for chapter 45.
