Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to real Is Children's Story Hour. As
0:05
a reminder, rail Is is a reading service intended for
0:08
people who are blind or of other disabilities that make
0:11
it difficult to read printed material. Today we will be
0:15
reading from various books on famous women. Your reader today
0:19
is Diane. We will begin with the story I Am
0:23
Frida Carlo. It was published by Doll Books for Young Readers,
0:30
an imprint of Penguin Random House, and it has a
0:36
copyright year of twenty twenty one. The author's Brad Meltzer.
0:43
I am Frida Kailo. I was born in Mexico in
0:48
this house. Later we painted a blue and called it
0:50
at La Casa Azul, the Blue House. It stood out
0:55
from everything else. Isn't that beautiful? When I was six
0:58
years old, I got disease called polio. Made my right
1:02
leg thinner and shorter than my left leg. I had
1:05
to stay in my room for nine months. When I
1:08
finally got out, kids would make fun of me. I
1:11
tried hiding my leg under long skirts or by wearing
1:14
extra socks. It didn't help. Thankfully, I always had a
1:19
special place where I could escape. In my room, I
1:22
breathe into the window pane and draw a door. The
1:25
door let me enter my imagination. There. I would visit
1:33
a dairy cob pen soong. I entered through the oh
1:37
would take me down, down, down inside the earth, where
1:40
my imaginary friend was always waiting for me. I don't
1:44
remember what she looked like or even what color she was,
1:47
but together we would laugh and dance. I tell her
1:50
all my problems and she would listen. That place made
1:54
me happy, and when I'd blur the door with my hand,
1:57
it would disappear. It's amazing what you can do with
2:00
your imagination to strengthen my leg My dad encouraged me
2:04
to play sports, soccer, wrestling, boxing, swimming. I did it all.
2:11
One of the best things my dad shared with me
2:13
was his curiosity about the world. As a photographer, he
2:17
take me along when he went to shoot photos. He
2:21
also liked to paint while he did his watercolors. I
2:23
collect pebbles, plants, and even insects. I bring them home,
2:27
looking up each item in my dad's books and examining
2:31
them under a miscope. Look around, Beauty is everywhere. At fourteen,
2:39
I went to the National Preparatory School, the best high
2:43
school in Mexico. The two thousand students. I was one
2:47
of only thirty five girls at school. We were supposed
2:49
to dress and behave a certain way. I dressed differently.
2:54
The wealthy mothers would take one look at me and
2:56
yelle to other students, I was fascinating. My closest friends
3:02
were a group of kids called the Cochushas, which is
3:06
like a hot pepper. We were smart and loved to read,
3:10
but sometimes we got in trouble, like when we rode
3:12
a real donkey down the hallway. One day, a famous
3:15
painter named Diego Riviera was hired to create a mural
3:19
in our auditorium. I watched him for three hours. I
3:23
didn't know it at the time, but my hardest days
3:26
were coming. At eighteen, I was in a terrible accident
3:29
when I trolley smashed into the bus I was riding.
3:33
Someone on the bus had been carrying paint, so my
3:35
body was covered in powdered gold. A month after the accident,
3:42
I came home from the hospital a full body cast.
3:46
My spinal column was broken in three places. The doctors
3:49
literally had to put me back together. The paint in
3:52
my leg and foot were terrible, and I could barely
3:54
move my arms. But I survived, I didn't get many visitors.
4:00
I realized that I wanted to be friends only with
4:02
people who like me just the way I am. I
4:06
knew my life had changed. I would no longer be
4:09
a doctor. Instead, as I learned to lie still, I
4:15
began to paint. Since I couldn't sit up in bed,
4:18
my mom asked a carproom to make a special easel
4:20
for me. I grabbed my father's brushes. Then I began.
4:24
I worked hard for in over books about art history.
4:27
My first paintings weren't great, even tour one up because
4:31
I was so unhappy with it. But with my mirror,
4:34
I kept going, painting what I saw. I paint myself
4:37
because I am so often alone, and because I am
4:40
the subject that I know best. As soon as I
4:43
could go outside, I brought my paintings to Diego Rivieria,
4:47
the famous pain I had met years earlier. Over time,
4:51
my portraits became more complex. I began adding pieces of
4:55
local Mexican art and history, textiles and incredent intricate carvings
5:01
to show people who I was. Eventually, Diego and I
5:05
got married. We traveled to America, to places like San Francisco,
5:10
New York and Detroit means some of the wealthiest people
5:13
in the world. Just like in high school, some people
5:17
would insult my clothing. My time away made me realize
5:21
that my favorite place of all was home. Back in Mexico,
5:26
I embraced all the things I loved, my heritage, animals,
5:32
and of course painting. Back then, women were expected to
5:34
be quiet and feminine. I wasn't either of those things.
5:40
In addition to painting, I became a teacher, a professor.
5:44
On the first day, that's exactly what they did. They
5:47
painted me. The pain for my accident never went away.
5:51
Some days it was so bad I could barely stand.
5:53
Even then, I took my students on field trips. As
5:56
my health got worse, my fore most committed students, those Frido's,
6:01
came to my Casa Azul for their lessons. Eventually I
6:06
sent them out into the world to paint murals on
6:09
nearby laundries in taverns. To honor my work. A gallery
6:13
owner began planning my first ever one woman show in Mexico.
6:18
Was so sick she was worried I might miss it,
6:21
so they set up my bed and made me part
6:23
of the exhibit. It was total chaos and absolutely beautiful.
6:29
Tragedy nearly took my life, but it couldn't take my spirit.
6:32
Fighting back wasn't easy, especially when people make fun of
6:35
how I looked and where I was from. But I
6:39
was determined to see things differently. My face, my clothes,
6:43
my country, even my paint. These are the colors on
6:46
my canvas. They don't look like anyone else's, and they shouldn't.
6:50
That's the best part. Your picture is uniquely yours Today,
6:56
Free You is considered one of the world's greatest artists,
6:59
and La Costo Zoul is now the Frieda Calo Museum,
7:04
open to the public. Museum as this the last pain
7:09
she ever did, Viva la vita, which means long live love.
7:12
Her husband, Diego Rivera, eventually said she's a better painter
7:17
than I am. She is proof that no one can
7:21
ever define you, no matter how you look. Her hair
7:24
looks like a pretzel in this one. That's not a pretzel,
7:28
It's an infinite infinity sign, something that ties us together
7:34
and lives forever. Art is like life. It's rarely what
7:40
it first appears. Instead of following a straight path, your
7:43
life in your art will twist and turn taking you
7:46
on unexpected journeys. It's messy and bold and scary and fun,
7:51
but it's all part of your picture. A magnificent self portrait.
7:55
I am freeda colo, and I know that the most
7:59
beautiful thing is you, just as you are. Our next
8:04
books will be Doctor Seuss books, and our first one
8:09
is titled One Fish Too Fish, Redfish, bluefish, and it
8:14
was published by Random House Children's Books, a division of
8:17
Random House Incorporated. It has a copywriter of nineteen ninety
8:22
to nineteen eighty eight and the author is Doctor Seuss.
8:28
One Fish toofish, redfish, bluefish, black fish, bluefish, old fish,
8:34
new fish. This one has a little star, This one
8:37
has a little car. Say what a lot of fish?
8:40
These are yes, Some are red and some are blue.
8:44
Some are old and some are new. Some are sad,
8:47
and some are glad, and some are very very bad.
8:51
Why are they sad and glad and bad? I do
8:54
not know. Go ask your dad. Some are thin and
8:58
some are fat. The fat one has a yellow hat.
9:01
From there to here, from here to Their funny things
9:05
are everywhere. Here are some who like to run. They
9:08
run for fun in the hot, hot sun. Oh me,
9:12
oh my, oh me, Oh my, what a lot of
9:14
funny things go by. Some have two feet and some
9:18
have four, Some have six feet and some have more.
9:22
Where do they come from? I can't say, but I
9:25
bet they come a long long way. We see them come,
9:29
we see them go. Some are fast and some are slow.
9:32
Some are high and some are low. Not one of
9:35
them is like another. Don't ask us, why go ask
9:39
your mother? Say? Look at his fingers? One, two, three,
9:43
How many fingers do I see? One? Two, three, four, five, six, seven,
9:49
eight nine ten? He has eleven eleven. This is something new.
9:54
I wish I had eleven. Two. Bomp bomp? Did you
9:58
ever write a wanmp? We have a wump with just
10:01
one hump, but we know a man called mister Gump.
10:05
Mister Gump has a seven hump wump. So if you
10:08
like to go bump bump, just jump on the hump
10:11
of the wump of Gump. Who am I? My name
10:15
is Ned. I do not like my little bed. This
10:18
is no good, This is not right. My feets stick
10:21
out a bed all night, and when I pull them in,
10:24
oh dear, my head sticks out of bed. Up here.
10:28
We like our bike, It is made for three. Our
10:30
mic sits up in back. You see. We like our mic,
10:34
and this is why Mike does all the work. When
10:37
the hills get high. Hell there, Ned, how do you do?
10:41
Tell me? Tell me what is new? How are things
10:44
in your little bed? What is new? Please tell me, Ned,
10:47
I do not like this bed at all. A lot
10:50
of things have come to call. A cow, a dog,
10:53
a cat, a mouse. Oh what a bed? Oh what
10:56
a house? Oh dear, oh dear, I cannot hear. Will
11:00
you please come over near? Will you please look in
11:03
my ear? There must be something there. I fear say. Look,
11:07
a bird was in your ear, but he is out,
11:10
so have no fear again your ear can hear, My dear,
11:14
My head is old, My teeth are gold. The bird
11:18
I like to hold my shoes off, my foot is cold.
11:21
My shoes off, my foot is cold. I have a
11:24
bird I like to hold. My head is old, my
11:27
teeth are goat. And now my story is all told.
11:31
We took a look. We saw a nook on his head.
11:34
He had a hook on his hook. He had a
11:37
book on His book was how to cook. We saw
11:40
him sit and try to cook. He took a look
11:43
at the book on the hook. But a nook can't read,
11:46
So a nook can't cook, So what good do a
11:51
nook is a hook cookbook? The moon was out and
11:55
we saw some sheep. We saw some sheep take a
11:58
walk in their sleep by the light of the moon,
12:00
by the light of the star. They walked all night
12:03
from near to far. I would never walk. I would
12:06
take a car. I do not like this one so well.
12:10
All he does is yell, yell, yell. Oh. I have
12:13
this one about. When he comes in, I put him out.
12:16
This one is quite an ass a mouse. I like
12:19
to have him in the house. At our house we
12:21
open cans. We have to open many cans, and that
12:25
is why we have a zan's. A zan's for cans
12:28
is very good. Have you a zans for cans? You should?
12:33
I like to box, how I like to box? Oh,
12:36
so every day I box a gox and yellow socks.
12:39
Eye box, my gox, eyebox and yellow socks, box socks.
12:45
It is fun to sing if you sing with the ying.
12:48
My yin can sing like anything. I sing high and
12:51
my ying sing slow, and we are not too bad.
12:54
You know. This one, I think is called a yink.
12:58
He likes to wink, and he likes to he likes
13:01
to drink and drink and drink. The thing he likes
13:04
to drink is ink. The ink he likes to drink
13:07
his pink. He likes to wink and drink pink ink.
13:11
So if you had a lot of ink, then you
13:13
should get a ink. I think hop hop hoop. I
13:18
am a yop. All I like to do is hop
13:21
from fingertop to fingertop. I hop from left to right
13:24
and then hop hop a hop right back again. I
13:28
like to hop all day and night, from right to
13:30
left and left to right. Why do I like to hop?
13:34
Hop hop? I do not know. Go ask your pop.
13:38
Brush brush, brush, brush, com comb, comb comb, blue hair
13:43
is fun to brush and comb. All girls who like
13:46
to brush and comb should have a pet like this
13:49
at home. Who is this pet? Say? He is wet?
13:53
You never yet met a pet? I bet as wet
13:56
as they let this wet pet get? Did you ever
14:00
fly height in bed? Did you ever walk with ten
14:03
cats on your head? Did you ever milk this kind
14:06
of cow? Well? We can do it, we know how
14:09
you never did? You should? These things are fun and
14:12
fun is good? Hello? Hello? Are you there? Hello? I
14:17
called you up to say hello. I said hello, can
14:20
you hear me, Joe? Oh no, I cannot hear your call.
14:24
I cannot hear your call at all. This is not good,
14:27
And I know why a mouse has cut the wire.
14:30
Goodbye from near too far, from here to there, Funny
14:34
things are everywhere. These yellow pets are called the zs.
14:39
They make one hair up on their heads. Their hair
14:41
grows fast, so fast they say they need a haircut
14:46
every day. Who am I? My name is Dish on
14:49
my hand. I have a dish. I have this dish
14:52
to help me wish. When I wish to make a wish,
14:55
I wave my hand with a big swish. Then I
14:58
say I wish we were a fish, and I get
15:02
fish right on my dish. So if you wish to
15:04
wish a wish, you may swish for fish with mysh
15:08
wish dish. At our house, we play out back. We
15:12
play a game called Ring the Gack. Would you like
15:14
to play this game? Come down? We had the only
15:18
ghack in town. Look what we found in the park
15:21
in the dark. We will take him home. We will
15:23
call him Clark. He will live in our house. He
15:27
will grow and grow. Will our mother like this? We
15:31
don't know? And now good night. It is time to sleep,
15:34
so we will sleep with our pet Zep. Today is gone,
15:38
Today was fun Tomorrow is another one. Every day from
15:43
here to there, funny things are everywhere. Our next book
15:48
is Green Eggs and Ham. It was published by Random
15:54

15:58
a copyright ear of nineteen sixty to nineteen eighty eight
16:03

not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs
16:48
and Ham. I do not like them, sam i am.
16:52
Would you eat them in a box? Would you eat
16:54
them with a fox? Not in a box? Not with
16:57
a fox, not in a house, not with a mouse.
17:01
I would not eat them here or there. I would
17:03
not eat them anywhere. I would not eat green eggs
17:07
and ham. I do not like them. Sam i am,
17:10
would you? Could you in a car eat them? Eat
17:13
them here they are? I would not could not in
17:16
a car. You may like them, you will see. You
17:19
may like them in a tree. I would not, could
17:22
not in a tree, not in a car. You let
17:24
me be. I do not like them in a box.
17:27
I do not like them with a fox. I do
17:30
not like them in a house. I do not like
17:32

20:03
Say I will eat them anywhere. I do so like
20:08
green eggs and ham. Thank you, Thank you, Sam, I am.
20:12
Our next book is called The Shape of Me and
20:14
Other Stuff, and it was published by Random House Shunner's Books,
20:19
a division of random House Incorporated. It has a copyright
20:23
year of nineteen seventy three to nineteen ninety seven and
20:27
it was written by doctor Seuss. The shape of You,
20:31
the shape of Me, the shape of everything I see above,
20:35
a balloon, a bed, a bike. No shapes are never
20:39
ever quite alike. Just think about the shape of beans
20:42
and flowers and mice and big machines. Just think about
20:46
the shape of strings and elephants and other things, the
20:50
shape of lips, the shape of ships, the shape of
20:54
water when it drips, and the shape of camels, the
20:57
shape of bees, and the wonderful shape the factor keys,
21:01
and the shapes of spider webs and clothes. And speaking
21:05
of shapes, now, just suppose suppose you were shaped like
21:09
these or those, or shaped like a blog or a
21:13
garden hose. Of all the shapes we might have been,
21:17
I say hooray for the shapes worrying. Our next book
21:22
is titled If You Think There's Nothing to Do, and
21:26
it was published by Random House Junner's Books, a division
21:29
of Penguin random House. It has a copyright year of
21:34
nineteen eighty six to night Excuse Me, nineteen eighty six
21:39
to twenty twenty four, and it was written by doctor Seuss.
21:45
If you're a border, perhaps even blue, or if you
21:47
think there's nothing to do, well, that's not the case,
21:51
and I'll show you why. Here are some things you
21:53
might like to try. You can juggle some books, or
21:57
you can read them, balance casts on your head, or
22:02
pet them and feed them. You can purchase a tank
22:05
fill it with fish, a turtle, a snail, some plants
22:08
if you wish. But when you feed fish, do not
22:11
give them a lot, or the fish may not fit
22:14
in the tank that you've got. Do not lie around
22:18
doing something at all. You can pick up the phone
22:21
and give someone a call. You can stay in the
22:24
house and fly kites in the hall, or try going
22:27
outside to play ball on a wall. You might want
22:31
to spruce up what you wear every day. You simply
22:34
get started in your usual way. Then try adding feathers
22:38
or some polka dot shoes, a small hat, a tall hat,
22:41
whatever you choose. You can pet all bike, you can
22:45
pad all boat. You can saddlell rne oh or ride
22:49
with a goat. You can swim in a pool on
22:51
a day that is hot, or skate on the ice
22:54
on a day that is not. Jump over a chair,
22:57
bounce on a bed, swing through the air, stand on
23:00
your head, sting on your head. I think you'll agree
23:04
changes the perspective of all that you see. Find some
23:08
things that go bang, find a thing that goes boom,
23:11
and a thing that goes toot. Now march out of
23:14
the room. You can play tic tac toe with your
23:17
hands or your feet. Sometimes you will win, sometimes you
23:21
will get beat. Hide behind a curtain or up on
23:25
a shelf. You can hide from a friend, but not
23:27
from yourself. Here's an idea you can try. If you dare,
23:32
count a tent as you stand with one foot in
23:35
the air. If you are hungry, try better on bread
23:38
or what about donuts. You could try those instead. You
23:42
can scramble some eggs, or you can fry them green
23:45
eggs and ham. I think you should try them. There
23:49
are many things you can do with your voice. It's
23:51
all up to you, so just to make a choice.
23:54
You can talk, you can sing, you can whisper. You
23:58
can shout to them, may get you sent out. You
24:02
might want to grow plants. It's not very hard. Plants
24:05
will grow in the house if you don't have a yard,
24:08
but be careful with seeds. Do not fling them about,
24:11
or you might be surprised where your garden will sprout.
24:15
Try taking a pencil, a pen and some ink to
24:18
write down your dreams and all that you think. You
24:22
might want to paint what you see in your head.
24:25
Don't paint on the wall. Use some paper instead. You
24:29
can build something new using everyday things, little bricks, and
24:33
sticks and blocks and strings. So I hope you can
24:37
see what I told you is true. It is never
24:40
the case that there's nothing to do. This concludes the
24:45
Children's Story ire for today. Please join us next time
24:48
as we will read more stories, fables and fairy tales.
