- 0:00Beautiful design, a real again, focus on storytelling, on
- 0:04bringing the world of coffee to life with like master classes in
- 0:08the coffee area and by far and away my favourite area, which I,
- 0:11I spent, you know, a good hour in there is the basement lounge.
- 0:26We're sort of heading into the world of Asian retail.
- 0:28It's, it's it's really clear that that retail in Asia is
- 0:32absolutely laser focused on what I call, I call it gens alpha
- 0:37because it's both Gen Z and Gen alpha together.
- 0:40It's got to be shareable. It's, it's designed for social
- 0:43media Pot Mart, an absolute retail phenomenon around the
- 0:47world. La Boo Boo.
- 0:48The numbers. I mean, you know, you're talking
- 0:49about is, is it making money? It's it's a phenomenon in terms
- 0:53of the money that is making blind box collectibles, you
- 0:56know, pot Mart stores popping up around the world.
- 0:58But this is by far and away the absolute jewel in the crown for
- 1:01Pop Mart. And it's in Icon Siam in
- 1:04Bangkok. Yeah, designed by X Plus Living
- 1:07that are a fantastic, amazing kind of fantasy retail design
- 1:11agency. They've done some of the most
- 1:13amazing concepts and it's just wonderful because it's it's a
- 1:17super, super Instagrammable and photogenic.
- 1:20It's got selfie spots everywhere.
- 1:22It's also got the kind of nod to the locality.
- 1:25One of the big things when people talk about retail spaces
- 1:28is, is, you know, how do you create a sense of place that's
- 1:30unique to a location? And so the actual store design,
- 1:34the interior of it is designed to be wibbly and wobbly, a bit
- 1:37like the the river that runs through Bangkok.
- 1:40You have, you know, the Thai royal motifs with the, with the
- 1:44Lucy model there so that you can take selfies.
- 1:47And of course, the big thing that they've added is a Cafe.
- 1:50It's this addition of hospitality onto the traditional
- 1:54retail offer where you can actually eat the Pop Mart
- 1:57characters. So you've got little liboo boos
- 1:59on, you know, Gelato sticks and you know, little, little kind of
- 2:03steamed sushi buns. Absolutely designed for social
- 2:06media shareability. Really fun, really playful, just
- 2:09wonderful. Nespresso was the thing that
- 2:12probably got the biggest column inches in New York this year for
- 2:15NRF. Nespresso have been on an
- 2:17absolute roll over the past year.
- 2:19They've opened just a beautiful store in the Malay in Paris.
- 2:23They did a lovely boutique and Covent Garden.
- 2:26But this is the absolute jewel in the crown in the Flatiron
- 2:29district, which again is just, it's a really, really nice
- 2:32shopping district. Flatiron is really kind of on a
- 2:35roll, you know, Union Square, you've got Petco, you've got the
- 2:38Crate&barrel, you know, all of the stuff that's happening.
- 2:41Aritzia Flagship again, it really kind of, it's a lovely
- 2:44new anchor to the area and it's huge and wonderful.
- 2:48I mean, just beautiful design. A real again, focus on
- 2:52storytelling, on bringing the world of coffee to life with
- 2:56like master classes in the coffee area.
- 2:58And by far and away my favourite area, which I, I spent, you
- 3:01know, a good hour in there is the basement lounge where you
- 3:04make yourself free coffees. You can listen to vinyl.
- 3:07And then in the evening, a secret door opens up into a
- 3:10secret Speakeasy after 5:00 wedding coffee based mocktails
- 3:16way of creating more reasons to come.
- 3:19I mean, one of the big questions of course, with with running a
- 3:21store is how do you maximise trading through the day?
- 3:24And particularly with coffee retail, it's like it's seen as
- 3:27daytime, you know, it's breakfast and lunch and
- 3:29afternoon. How do you create something for
- 3:31the evening? And what they're doing here is
- 3:33creating this evening Speakeasy approach, which I just thought
- 3:36was a a really nice little catch.
- 3:38I love this thought it was amazing.
- 3:39Like the, the, the, the, the little table in the middle.
- 3:42They've got these little, they create the scent pouches where
- 3:45you squish them and the scent comes out to you, which I
- 3:48thought was just a genius way of bringing coffee to life, which,
- 3:52you know, even saying that, how'd you bring coffee to life?
- 3:55They've done a phenomenal job of that.
- 3:57Well, it's the world of what I often say about how do you, how
- 3:59do you innovate in retail is to look at other sectors and then
- 4:03to say, if if I was a beauty retailer, how would I do coffee?
- 4:06And of course, beauty retailers have been doing scent notes for
- 4:10for Death. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:11And what they've done is they said, why don't we take that
- 4:13beauty approach and put it to coffee, which is just, it's a
- 4:15really simple little, you know, way of creating something that's
- 4:19a little bit unique. I I just don't think you can
- 4:21talk about retail innovation without talking about what
- 4:24Restoration Hardware have been doing over the last 1015.
- 4:27Amazing. Jaw-dropping.
- 4:29I mean, you know, every year they're doing something amazing.
- 4:32You know, I'm based out in the Cotswolds and I have RH England,
- 4:36which is in the stately home of of a no park.
- 4:39That was their first year of store, just quite simply the
- 4:42most astonishing retail retail experience.
- 4:46This was their latest one, years of construction, the old
- 4:50Abercrombie and Fitch store, which was an amazing store on
- 4:52the Champs Elysees spent a fortune redoing it.
- 4:56And it's just the ultimate aspirational lifestyle retail
- 5:00again with hospitality underpinning the entire
- 5:03experience. So you've got 2 restaurants, but
- 5:05you've also got this wonderful bar, which I particularly like
- 5:08because the entire design of the bar is basically filled with
- 5:12beautiful photography of all their galleries around the
- 5:14world. And you can actually see the
- 5:16left hand picture that that that stately home is the RH England
- 5:21in the Cotswolds. You know, it's just a fabulous
- 5:24piece of visual storytelling, of experience, of seductive
- 5:28lifestyle retailing. It's ultra luxury, of course,
- 5:32but you know, it is really just a benchmark of what amazing
- 5:35retail looks like. So this was this was the reason
- 5:40that I mentioned the Hoff in particular.
- 5:42Yeah, because the founder of Hoff, Fran Marcheira, he wrote a
- 5:46wonderful reply to my top 10 on LinkedIn telling me the story of
- 5:50of how he developed the the Hoff and why.
- 5:53And he told me that he had been in Korea two years ago to meet
- 5:56the founder of Gentle Monster. And Hancock Kim had said that he
- 6:00was planning to open an ultimate Gentle Monster house nowhere
- 6:04flagship, which would combine their head office as well.
- 6:07And they were building this 14 story building and they'd open
- 6:10the ultimate retail experience. So Fran came back to Madrid, He
- 6:14heard that this unit had become available, this bigger unit.
- 6:17He decided to close his very profitable Madrid store and
- 6:20reopen the flagship. But it was all most entirely
- 6:23influenced by this passion that Gentle Monster have had to
- 6:27reinvent retail as a kind of seductive art, immersive
- 6:31experience. Yeah, he's just going beyond.
- 6:34And it's where every store is different.
- 6:36Every store is unique, you know, they are not spending money on
- 6:39advertising in the traditional way because the entire world who
- 6:42visit the stores are advertising it for them.
- 6:45Gentle Monster, you know, they don't have a mannequin
- 6:47department, they have a robot department where they are making
- 6:50these amazing interactive immersive robots.
- 6:53And so house nowhere, it's the 4th house nowhere to open.
- 6:57The second one in Seoul, This is in the Brooklyn of Seoul.
- 7:00And as you can see from the building on the bottom left, 14
- 7:03stories, it combines the head office of Gentle Monster with
- 7:07this amazing retail experience. You see this giant dashing
- 7:11sculpture. It actually breathes.
- 7:13So you can see it going, oh, wow.
- 7:15And it's really a sort of concept department store.
- 7:19You know, Gentle Monster sells sunglasses, but this is also
- 7:22Tambourans, their beauty brand. There's a new accessories brand
- 7:26called a Tissue. And then they have this
- 7:28astonishing pastry concept called New Decay, which is like
- 7:33a tea shop cafe at the same time.
- 7:35So it's a kind of modern concept department store that is every
- 7:40single place you look isn't is a, you know, is a photo
- 7:43opportunity and deliberately designed as a photo opportunity.
- 7:47And the whole world is talking about Gentle monster.
- 7:49No one walks into a gentle Monster store without going wow.
- 7:52It is the ultimate example of surprise and delight in retail.
- 7:56And they're doing something different in every store and
- 8:00they're constantly changing as well.
- 8:02So the current incarnation is actually a sort of Formula One
- 8:05installation that's got Mickey Mouse with a giant Mickey Mouse
- 8:09in Formula One costume. You know, it's art meets retail.
- 8:13It's constantly changing pop up. I know that when we were in New
- 8:16York, you know, the gentle Monster in Soho was closed for
- 8:19refurbishment because again, you know, they open an amazing
- 8:22store. But after a year, you know, they
- 8:24think right, time to do something different, time to
- 8:26freshen it up. So again, it's the new model of
- 8:30what we expect from retail. And the thing that's most
- 8:32incredible for me, they're not #1 they're #2 So there's a big
- 8:37question in my mind, who is number 1?
- 8:39Yeah, I just, I mean, look, it's luxury.
- 8:42And look, they've got LVMH budgets and a lot of people will
- 8:45say, you know, look, it's not real retail.
- 8:48But the reason I show this, and the reason I put it at #1 is
- 8:51because for the past few years, Louis Vuitton have been wowing
- 8:54the world not just with retail, but with a hoarding.
- 8:57So it first started on the Charles Alizee where they closed
- 9:00up the building. That's going to be whatever it's
- 9:02going to be the Louis Vuitton hotel, the flagship putting this
- 9:05enormous trunk hoarding, which was incredible.
- 9:08And then and then New York said we can do better.
- 9:12And they've got, you know, a 200 foot series of trunk hoardings
- 9:16on 5th Ave, which almost like using projection mapping for
- 9:19Christmas, you know, Christmas windows.
- 9:22It's become the new icon on 5th Ave.
- 9:25And then you think, how on earth can you top that?
- 9:27And so Louis Vuitton again over in Asia, because as I said, you
- 9:31know, Asia is absolutely driving retail innovation.
- 9:33They've cut a cruise ship on the streets of Shanghai and turned
- 9:38into a retail exhibition, hospitality space, immersive
- 9:42storytelling. It's just fabulous.
- 9:46You know, it's so you know, OMA, world famous architects
- 9:50designing this. It's supposed to look halfway
- 9:52between an ocean cruise line or in a Louis Vuitton trunk.
- 9:55It's got digital activation. So the seamless, you know, so
- 9:58that so the way they manage the experience is all done through
- 10:01WeChat. So, you know, it's frictionless
- 10:04experience. You move through ten of these
- 10:06storytelling rooms that are telling different stories around
- 10:10the craftsmanship of Louis Vuitton.
- 10:12Again, every single space is a photo opportunity.
- 10:14This is marketing wrapped up into retail as well.
- 10:17Then they have a retail store with unique products and then a
- 10:21Maxine Frederique Patisserie Cafe restaurant.
- 10:25And if that wasn't enough, you can actually sit out on the deck
- 10:28and watch a vintage movies in the evening as well.
- 10:30As I said, you know, I keep thinking retail can't get more
- 10:33innovative every year and every year I'm proved wrong and and
- 10:37you know, I challenge anyone to find anything that's more wow
- 10:40than the living by the tool. I think, yeah, I mean, it's
- 10:44interesting timing in terms of when, when, when.
- 10:47I'm curious who didn't make your top ten list.
- 10:50And I do want to ask you about that, but I'm just looking at
- 10:52time thinking, OK, all right, but I have to ask you who is
- 10:56who? Give me one.
- 10:57Give me one stall that didn't make your top ten that you were
- 10:59wowed by. So the Zara Serrano that, that
- 11:02that Zara flagship is absolutely world class, You know, totally
- 11:06read, totally read on the store. But they've also put this put
- 11:09this unique concept called the apartment, which they did in the
- 11:12pop up store in Paris, which is basically combining Zara home
- 11:16with fashion and with food as well at the same time, a fully
- 11:19furnished apartment. It's just fabulous elevation.
- 11:23And I, I really agonised about whether to put that in or not,
- 11:26that I wanted to put the value example of lefties in from a,
- 11:30from a more sort of practical retail perspective.
- 11:32Matthew, I feel like I've literally been around the world.
- 11:35Thank you so much for giving up your time and being with us and
- 11:38sharing. It's a real pleasure.
- 11:39Thank you for inviting me, Alex.
