- 0:00We are coming to the end of our Lent series of cultivating and
- 0:05letting go.
- 0:06And this morning we are in this story from Luke where Jesus is
- 0:11entering into Jerusalem.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And all the people are watching what's going on.
- 0:19And I'm framing it this morning as cultivating courageous peace
- 0:26and letting go of power.
- 0:29And as David mentioned,
- 0:31that on that day,
- 0:32there were two parades coming into Jerusalem.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: One came from the west,
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: which was Pilate's parade,
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: and the other came from the east,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: which was led by Jesus.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: He would spend most of his time in a villa in the Mediterranean.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, why wouldn't anybody want to spend their time in a villa in the
- 1:03the national holiday of independence for the Jewish people when
- 1:09they were led by
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Moses out of Egypt from 400 years of slavery.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It was a proclamation that they were free, but they weren't.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: They were under Roman occupation,
- 1:23and the Romans needed each year at this time to make sure that
- 1:28the populace of
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Jerusalem and all of Israel knew about Pax Romana,
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: that the Roman government was still in control,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: and that the peace that was there was because of their power.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And the other was led by Jesus.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Pilate's parade shouted power,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: soldiers marched,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: banners were waved and swords,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: swords glinted in the sun.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: It was Rome's yearly show of force and power.
- 2:01The message,
- 2:02stay in line because Rome was the one that maintained the
- 2:09peace.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Jesus' procession looked different.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: He entered on a donkey,
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: not only on a donkey,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: but a borrowed donkey,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: and he came with no weapons.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: He came with no soldiers,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: only cloaks laid on the ground,
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: palm branches waved,
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: and the voices of everyday people proclaiming,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Hosanna,
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Hosanna in the highest.
- 2:39Compared to what was going on on the other side of the city,
- 2:42it looked soft.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: But let us not miss that it was anything but passive.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: This was a procession of peace.
- 2:57And it was a bit of a confrontation because God's peace was
- 3:02arriving in Jerusalem already.
- 3:05John Howard Yoder,
- 3:07who was an Anabaptist theologian,
- 3:10he wrote the book,
- 3:11The Politics of Jesus.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And in that book,
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: he writes this,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: the cross is not a detour or a hurdle on the way to the kingdom.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: It is instead the kingdom come.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And what that means in this moment,
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: this entry into Jerusalem,
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: is that this is not the beginning of the end.
- 3:39It is,
- 3:39in fact,
- 3:40the kingdom of God breaking into the streets of Jerusalem.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And Jesus rides not with might, but with mercy.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Not with fear, but with faith.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: And the disciples, they recognize it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And we are invited by Luke to recognize it as well this morning.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And they shout, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And they throw down those cloaks on the road.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And they lay down those branches.
- 4:13And they welcome a king who looks nothing like Pontius Pilate,
- 4:18nothing like Caesar.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: A king whose power is not enforced, but it is embodied.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: and the person of Jesus Christ.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: This is more than a celebration.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: This is political.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: This is a protest.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And it's not liked by everyone that sees what's going on.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: The Pharisees said, tell them to be quiet.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Stop doing this because they saw what was happening.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: They knew this wasn't just a happy moment.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: It was political.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: It was dangerous.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: It was countercultural.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And it proclaimed something very significant in the face of Roman power.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: But Jesus responded,
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: if they keep silent,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: the rocks,
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: the stones,
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: them very selves will cry out about what's going on here.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Because the truth, it cannot be silent.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: It cannot be buried.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Not when love and grace and peace is on the move.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: The last few weeks we have heard about Jesus.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Protests, marches, parades going on all across the world.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: In Gaza,
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: protesters gathered to protest and to cry out against Hamas,
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: risking their lives to call for peace.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Their signs read, Enough.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Their chants echoed, I think, Jesus' words.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Even if the people stay quiet,
- 6:07the stones will cry out against the injustice that is going on
- 6:12in the world.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And in cities across Europe and the U.S.,
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: people marched under banners,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: hands off,
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: calling for justice,
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: dignity,
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: and peace together.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: These modern parades,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: in my mind,
- 6:29seem to be filled with the same spirit as the one that is going
- 6:33on in Jerusalem in
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: this day.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: People choosing peace over silence.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: People choosing hope over fear.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: it's important to note,
- 6:46I am not saying that those protests that happened across the
- 6:50world in these last
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: weeks were led by Jesus.
- 6:54But I am saying that they do give us a window into how this day
- 7:01in Jerusalem felt.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Some supported it with great cries.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And some were concerned about it and opposed to it.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: But still the same question remains today.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Can we step up?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Can I step up?
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Can I walk with Jesus in the way of peace even when it is costly?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Can I speak the truth when it's easier to stay quiet?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Can I choose peace
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: over and above and in the face of opposing powers.
- 7:51That's really the question that is going on at the heart of
- 7:55these two processions
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: in Jerusalem on this triumphal entry of Jesus.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I was asked this last week,
- 8:07I've been talking about cultivating and letting go and
- 8:10suggesting that there are
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: these things that we can let go of.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: And I was challenged on that.
- 8:16Can we just decide to let go of these things that permeate our
- 8:21life and are so
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: ingrained in how we think and then
- 8:26how we live richard rohrer talks about that in a lot of
- 8:31different ways and one of
- 8:32my favorite quotes from richard rohrer is this we do not think
- 8:38ourselves into new
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: ways of living we live ourselves into new ways of thinking jesus
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: does not invite us into an idea.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus invites us into a life.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: A life of peace.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: A life that lets go of pride and picks up love.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: A life that chooses humility over control.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: A life that picks up a cross and carries it all the way to its end.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: To follow him, to follow Jesus, we must let go.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Let go of fear.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Let go of the need of always needing to win.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Let go of thinking that power and control somehow keeps us safe.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And let go.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Let go of the illusion that domination is strength and brings power.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And in its place,
- 10:12we are invited to cultivate this kind of courageous peace that
- 10:17is demonstrated by
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Jesus and his disciples as they walk through Jerusalem.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: The kind of peace that listens.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: The kind of peace that forgives.
- 10:29The kind of peace that dares to speak the truth when everything
- 10:35around us tells us
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: that it's safer to be silent.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: that builds up rather than tears down.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: During my years in Sicily, I saw what that kind of peace looks like.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: It's found in small churches,
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: sharing meals around a small little table in a small little kitchen,
- 10:57and conversations that cross cultures and prayers whispered in
- 11:03two different
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: languages.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Peace doesn't come from power.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: It comes from presence, from listening, from showing up again and again.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: On Sunny Slope Farm,
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: which is my family's farm where I have a special events venue,
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: I've seen it too in wedding ceremonies,
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: in quiet moments during receptions,
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: in laughter shared under string lights.
- 11:28People from different families and different backgrounds coming
- 11:32together to
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: celebrate love that unifies.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: It's peace in real life, and it is sacred.
- 11:44And at the hotel where I was a GM,
- 11:47I learned that leadership isn't about control.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: It's about care.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Peace happens when people are seen.
- 11:58when they are welcomed,
- 12:00when they are given a space and a place to become whole.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus didn't enter Jerusalem to overthrow Rome with violence.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: He came to reveal a different kind of power,
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: a power that bends low to serve,
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: a power that opens doors instead of closing them,
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: a power that walks straight into suffering and does not flinch.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: So today, I ask, can I step up?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Can you step up?
- 12:38Can we step up and follow Jesus,
- 12:43not just with palms and songs,
- 12:46but with our lives?
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Can we speak up when others fall silent?
- 12:54Can we choose peace even when the journey ahead seems hard and
- 12:58filled with risk?
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Brothers and sisters, this parade is not over.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: It is still moving through cities and towns,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: through churches and community,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: through you and through me.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Jesus is leading the way for us,
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: still riding that donkey,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: still asking us to follow him through the streets.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So let's not just wave a palm branch.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Let's step into the story.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Step into the kingdom.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Step into a life that looks like love and peace for others.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Because even if we stay silent,
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: The stones will cry out.
- 13:53God will find something or someone to proclaim this news and to
- 14:00make it known.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: But how beautiful it is when God's people shout it out first.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Amen.
