- 0:12Speaker 1: This is the Weed of Time Spoilers podcast. All right,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm going to start this recording with I don't know
- 0:20Speaker 1: if it's a correction or a further information, but so
- 0:24Speaker 1: when we were shouting out Patreons, we did our top
- 0:28Speaker 1: ten over one thousand and over five hundred, and that
- 0:30Speaker 1: was just for Watt Spoilers. I do want to say
- 0:32Speaker 1: some people brought me and were like, hey, you know,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I also gave money to your other podcasts. Are you're
- 0:36Speaker 1: not going to that? No? I didn't. I'm sorry some
- 0:40Speaker 1: of you might. You know, some of those people who
- 0:42Speaker 1: gave money gave money to other causes because they've been
- 0:44Speaker 1: around for such a long time, particularly Misborn Spoilers or
- 0:47Speaker 1: just Roll with It or one of our other projects.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So I don't want to apologize to anyone who gave
- 0:51Speaker 1: money to those projects and didn't get counted. So I
- 0:55Speaker 1: do apologize for that. I know those people have supported
- 0:58Speaker 1: us in so many different ways, merch with spoiler con.
- 1:02Speaker 1: You know, it's just with Patreons. The list is there
- 1:05Speaker 1: and it's easy to remember and easy to shout out.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So I do want to thank everybody else who's also
- 1:09Speaker 1: helped out, and specifically Evan macmavoy, mac macmava, macmaeva. Shit.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He gave me a pronunciation guide, and I'm having trouble
- 1:23Speaker 1: even with the pronunciation guide. So that tells you how
- 1:25Speaker 1: hard names are. It's capital M A HC capital m
- 1:30Speaker 1: A y dash lowercase v u H. So how would
- 1:35Speaker 1: you say that.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I cannot pronounce things based on a linear string of
- 1:39Speaker 2: mouth noises. It's one of my brains like holes. Oh okay,
- 1:44Speaker 2: I can read that, macmaeva.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So Evan mcmava wrote me to let me know that
- 1:49Speaker 1: he is block on the New Kid, which, of course,
- 1:52Speaker 1: as soon as he said that, I was like, oh,
- 1:54Speaker 1: of course right, So you know he's been around forever,
- 1:58Speaker 1: big fan of the podcast.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember that name from a long time ago.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Was around for a good long while when the Discord
- 2:05Speaker 2: was hopping.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, back in twice, but around since twenty seventeen. And
- 2:10Speaker 1: old Blonde yeah, old blonde patron.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah. So every name that we didn't recognize we would
- 2:15Speaker 2: actually recognize. We just didn't connect the screen name to
- 2:18Speaker 2: the name.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It's the name name, yep, which I think I said
- 2:20Speaker 1: while I was reading it out that I'm sure I
- 2:22Speaker 1: was missing some of these, So I think thank you
- 2:24Speaker 1: for writing in and correcting me. All right, So today
- 2:29Speaker 1: we are here once again for chapter twenty nine. It's
- 2:33Speaker 1: another Malden chapter.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we're getting multiple episodes recorded in one day. What
- 2:39Speaker 2: a throwback to the old ways of podcasts.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Don't tell them that my time, don't tell them that
- 2:46Speaker 1: the illusion. It's a totally different day. We didn't just
- 2:49Speaker 1: finish the last episode, take a quick break and come
- 2:52Speaker 1: back to do this one. That's not what happened.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I think. I think the tired, post desert quality of
- 2:57Speaker 2: my voice might fact.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Fortunately, we don't have to worry about paren tying anymore
- 3:05Speaker 1: knots in that stupid leather cord while he waits to
- 3:09Speaker 1: rescue Fael for four freaking books. Because this this is
- 3:13Speaker 1: the last knot, the last not the last knot.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Goodness, we're done with that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Chapter twenty nine. Our symbol is the wolf because this
- 3:22Speaker 1: is a parent wolfe chapter. And what else would it be.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I mean, I guess we have the Blacksmith's puzzle now
- 3:28Speaker 1: that we didn't have before, which could be a that
- 3:30Speaker 1: could be a really good para. It's it's specifically I
- 3:33Speaker 1: think about Maldon though, because it's about like pulling apart
- 3:36Speaker 1: the puzzle that is Malden. Yeah, right, is that's what
- 3:39Speaker 1: he's been doing this whole time, for all of these books,
- 3:41Speaker 1: is assembling the pieces and getting them in the right
- 3:43Speaker 1: places so that he can pull this thing apart. Now,
- 3:46Speaker 1: little does you know, his lynchpin is, which is Galina
- 3:51Speaker 1: is totally black Aja, but fortunately Interverian will get him
- 3:54Speaker 1: in the right place. Anyway, it would have been really
- 3:57Speaker 1: nice to see Jordan do something with the black Smith's
- 4:00Speaker 1: puzzle in this chapter the way he does it with
- 4:02Speaker 1: Snakes and Foxes, or I guess Brandon technically does it
- 4:06Speaker 1: in the last books where there's like this parallel right,
- 4:09Speaker 1: like where the game is being played or someone's trying
- 4:11Speaker 1: to pick take a part some sort of like I
- 4:14Speaker 1: would have liked to see like aarm get like pushed
- 4:17Speaker 1: to the side and like, hey, instead of fighting, I
- 4:20Speaker 1: need you to relax and solve this Blacksmith's puzzle and
- 4:24Speaker 1: have him go through the mental struggle of like trusting
- 4:28Speaker 1: Paren or trusting the prophet and like struggling with that
- 4:32Speaker 1: as he's playing with the Blacksmith's puzzle as Paren is fighting,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and then like there's this moment where the puzzle falls
- 4:39Speaker 1: apart is the moment where Paren rescues Faieel, is the
- 4:42Speaker 1: moment where Aaron has this realization that maybe violence is
- 4:46Speaker 1: in everything, and that maybe Massima's wrong, and maybe he
- 4:49Speaker 1: should listen to Paren. You know, Like, I'd love to
- 4:51Speaker 1: have seen some sort of like parallel structure going on
- 4:55Speaker 1: in the way that like Ran fighting his battle in
- 4:58Speaker 1: the clouds affected the arm in The Great Hunt. Right,
- 5:01Speaker 1: there's so many examples of it in the series. This
- 5:03Speaker 1: would have been another great place for it.
- 5:05Speaker 2: That would have been really really cool. I would have
- 5:08Speaker 2: loved to see that and like aarm like deradicalizes himself
- 5:14Speaker 2: as he pulls the puzzle apart as he helps Paren
- 5:18Speaker 2: rescue Fayel on a metaphysical line, right, that would have
- 5:21Speaker 2: been really satisfied. I would have been okay with him
- 5:24Speaker 2: recycling that maneuver. That move had multiple uses in it,
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think, But.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Uh, I guess I should read a sin. Paren stood
- 5:32Speaker 1: just below the ridge top, near the edge of the fog,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and studied the encampment in stone walled town below two
- 5:38Speaker 1: hundred paces of fairly steep slope, sparsely dotted with low
- 5:42Speaker 1: brush down to the level ground. Perhaps seven hundred more
- 5:45Speaker 1: of cleared ground to the first tense then better than
- 5:48Speaker 1: a mile to the town. It seemed so close now
- 5:51Speaker 1: he did not use his looking glass. A glint off
- 5:54Speaker 1: the lens from the sun just peeking over the horizon,
- 5:57Speaker 1: a fingernail edge of golden red might ruin every thing.
- 6:00Speaker 1: The grayness around him curled, but did not really move
- 6:04Speaker 1: with the breeze, even when it gusted and made his
- 6:06Speaker 1: cloak stir. The dense mist on the far ridge, obscuring
- 6:10Speaker 1: the windmill there seemed too still as well. If he
- 6:13Speaker 1: studied it a while, How long before someone among those
- 6:16Speaker 1: tents noticed there was nothing to be done for it.
- 6:19Speaker 1: The fog felt like any fog, damp and a little cool,
- 6:22Speaker 1: but somehow Nield had fixed these mists in place before
- 6:26Speaker 1: he went off to his other tasks. The sun would
- 6:29Speaker 1: not burn them off even at noonday, or so. The
- 6:31Speaker 1: Aushamon claimed everything would be done by noon, one way
- 6:35Speaker 1: or another, but Perrin hoped the man was right. The
- 6:38Speaker 1: sky was clear and the day looked to be warm
- 6:40Speaker 1: for early spring. Only a few shadows seemed to be
- 6:43Speaker 1: outside the camp, relatively speaking, but thousands of white clad
- 6:46Speaker 1: figures bustled among the tents. Tens of thousands. His eyes
- 6:50Speaker 1: ached to find fai Yeel among them. His heart ached
- 6:53Speaker 1: to see her, but he could as well try to
- 6:55Speaker 1: pick out one particular pin from a barley basket of
- 6:58Speaker 1: them spilled on the ground. Instead, he stared at the
- 7:01Speaker 1: town's gates, standing wide open, as they had every time
- 7:04Speaker 1: he gazed on them, invitingly wide they called to him.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Soon Fayelle and her companions would know it was time
- 7:11Speaker 1: to head for those gates and the towered fortress that
- 7:14Speaker 1: bulked at the north end of town. She might be
- 7:17Speaker 1: at chores if the maidens were right about how the
- 7:19Speaker 1: prisoners would be treated as guy Shine, but she would
- 7:22Speaker 1: know to slip away and go to the fortress. She
- 7:25Speaker 1: and her friends and likely Elise as well. Whatever her
- 7:28Speaker 1: scheme with the shadow the eyes of I would not
- 7:30Speaker 1: want to remain on a battlefield. A second sister in
- 7:33Speaker 1: the fortress might come in handy the lights. Un it
- 7:36Speaker 1: did not come to that.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yes, soon Fayla and her friends will be ignoring Yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 2: her wolf calls because they have bigger issues.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Because they're trapped in the base of als. So yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and Alise is what he knows.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Gallina Bay right, it's far too close to Moren's alibi
- 7:51Speaker 2: for anyone's comfort.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah hmm, it's like they always the same playbook when
- 7:57Speaker 1: they're out there in the wild.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, new materials stop creeping off of each other.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It's like this one dusty old book that someone wrote
- 8:06Speaker 1: six hundred years ago. How to you know, make friends
- 8:08Speaker 1: and influence people? Right, like all the eyes that I
- 8:14Speaker 1: read it? People, How to spy and be a common person.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Name yourself Elise or a Meise. Pretend you're looking for
- 8:21Speaker 1: old stories, you know, the usual stuff.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Live with your best friend for a long time in
- 8:29Speaker 1: a hut with no men around, and claim you're just
- 8:32Speaker 1: friends and or sisters.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Paren thinks about how people are more chaotic than Blacksmith's puzzles,
- 8:41Speaker 2: and yet then continues to spend the rest of his
- 8:43Speaker 2: life insisting on looking at the world it's a Blacksmith's puzzle.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He has this great insight and then ignoring I mean,
- 8:49Speaker 2: paren that was just a really poignant thought. Why don't
- 8:52Speaker 2: you notice?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yes, but right, it is a way of framing the
- 8:59Speaker 1: world and looking at it is like you need these people,
- 9:01Speaker 1: Like in order for the people to do what you want,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you have to give them something, right, And so that's
- 9:09Speaker 1: the piece of the puzzle, and then what's the thing
- 9:11Speaker 1: you need? Well, you have to go get that thing,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and then you like, there, I can see where despite
- 9:17Speaker 1: acknowledging that people are more complicated in the Blacksmith's puzzle,
- 9:21Speaker 1: it's still good framing. It's still good model. Right. Same
- 9:24Speaker 1: thing with physics, right, all of our physical models. We
- 9:27Speaker 1: look at physics and go, it's more complicated than that,
- 9:29Speaker 1: but it's a pretty good model.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Right, like right, and that It's kind of the deal
- 9:33Speaker 2: with models is they are inherently flawed. That's kind of
- 9:37Speaker 2: part of their job as models. They are is to
- 9:41Speaker 2: be an inaccurate representation of.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Reality close enough, right.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Simple enough that we can actually make some kind of
- 9:48Speaker 2: useful predictions from said model.
- 9:51Speaker 1: My favorite example of that is in engineering, what my
- 9:54Speaker 1: professor said, so, yeah, we just take sign theata and
- 9:58Speaker 1: say it equals data for small data. And I went, wait,
- 10:01Speaker 1: what they said, Yeah, so you take this equation sign
- 10:04Speaker 1: data and you just replace that with the number that
- 10:07Speaker 1: you were gonna plug into it, because for small enough numbers,
- 10:10Speaker 1: they're basically the same number, and in the real world
- 10:14Speaker 1: it's close enough. And I went no, because because the
- 10:17Speaker 1: sign of a number is not the number. What are
- 10:20Speaker 1: you talking like? It took me like a solid week
- 10:24Speaker 1: of banging my head against the wall before before I went, oh,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you're just doing an approximation.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Uh huh, because application matters, the context matters.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, just application matters, the context matters. And just for this,
- 10:39Speaker 1: for a small enough angle, it's fine. For a small
- 10:42Speaker 1: enough angle. You know, outside of a fifteen degree angle,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you're screwed, right, But like there's a lot of things
- 10:48Speaker 1: where like a building isn't gonna bend more than fifteen
- 10:51Speaker 1: degrees ever, sure right, sure, Like, So you can approximate
- 10:57Speaker 1: signed data with data and it works, and it doesn't
- 11:00Speaker 1: make sense. Still, it doesn't make sense.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Oh, the world, the world.
- 11:07Speaker 1: That's why I've always I don't know, I've always been
- 11:09Speaker 1: a little bit more of a mathematician than an engineer.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Sure, speaking of people who are literal, I love killing
- 11:16Speaker 2: me thinking about Daniel acquiring polish and whatever that's supposed
- 11:21Speaker 2: to me a man a piece.
- 11:25Speaker 1: You don't rub polish on a man, like, what has
- 11:27Speaker 1: he got? Like? Does his hair's head shinier? Is he
- 11:30Speaker 1: like going bald? Is that the kind of polish we're
- 11:32Speaker 1: talking about? No, it's it's rubbing shoulders with nobles and manners,
- 11:40Speaker 1: and and also, just man, Jordan, are you just stop
- 11:44Speaker 1: picking on Daniel. He's like, oh yeah, I can identify
- 11:47Speaker 1: him in the fog from a distance because no one
- 11:49Speaker 1: else has that profile, the nose that big like, and
- 11:53Speaker 1: the bushy mustache underneath. Like he's really going hard at Daniel. There,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I gotta feel bad for him. And then this guy
- 11:59Speaker 1: running around Conger is going around trying to play dice
- 12:02Speaker 1: and no one wants to play because he's uncommonly lucky.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And I was I went down this rabbit hole. I
- 12:06Speaker 1: was like, oh, man, does he have some luck? As
- 12:08Speaker 1: he related to Matt, and then I looked at his character.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He's the drunkard. He's one of the town drunkards. He
- 12:14Speaker 1: has weighted dice. He cheats, he's just a cheat.
- 12:18Speaker 2: You were you were asking earlier in the last recording
- 12:21Speaker 2: for more people who just lie rather than being clever
- 12:24Speaker 2: with the truth. Well, here you go, here's a guy
- 12:26Speaker 2: who he's not uncommon lucky. He just cheats.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He's a conger. You don't You don't dice with congers.
- 12:31Speaker 1: They're going to have weight to dice.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Duh, of course, right the congers are not the Coffins,
- 12:38Speaker 2: not the Coplins either.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Well, thank you, Robert Jordan, I know. Well yeah, yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 2: At least it's not nat name for So next we
- 12:48Speaker 2: get to talk about Messima. Yeah, and how many of
- 12:52Speaker 2: his followers there are. It's it's a reminder of this
- 12:57Speaker 2: wild card that is that is in the army.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And Mesiema is coming to visit, right, So he is
- 13:03Speaker 1: separating from his army with what twenty guards to go
- 13:07Speaker 1: to hang out with Paren during this battle.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he's left some of his underlings in charge.
- 13:12Speaker 2: They're going to hold to the last man because the
- 13:14Speaker 2: women will hunt them down if they don't. And yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 2: him and an honor guard of better armored people have
- 13:22Speaker 2: come over to be with Paren because sure would be
- 13:24Speaker 2: a shame if something were to befall you at the
- 13:27Speaker 2: very moment that you rescue your wife. It's like the
- 13:31Speaker 2: most open naked threat. It's pretty situation ever, and Parent's
- 13:36Speaker 2: just like, I guess I have to remember to watch
- 13:38Speaker 2: my back while I go into battle, Like he doesn't
- 13:41Speaker 2: have other things to do while he's in a battle.
- 13:44Speaker 1: But at the same time, he's being pretty ruthless right
- 13:47Speaker 1: with this with the followers of the prophet. He is
- 13:51Speaker 1: putting them in harm's way. He is putting them in
- 13:53Speaker 1: a situation where he's expecting them to basically be cannon
- 13:57Speaker 1: fodder for everyone to get carved out. He's kind of
- 13:59Speaker 1: murdered them all.
- 14:01Speaker 2: He is effectively getting rid of Messima's army the only
- 14:04Speaker 2: way he knows how, which is violently. Yeah. Yeah, And
- 14:08Speaker 2: he's you know, justifying it by saying he's using it
- 14:11Speaker 2: to protect people who are not radical terrorists, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 2: his actual army, rather than all these you know, completely
- 14:18Speaker 2: brainwashed terrorists, like literally like they've been running around just
- 14:22Speaker 2: doing like terrorism everywhere. And he's like, well this will
- 14:26Speaker 2: you know, they're better that they die to the shido
- 14:28Speaker 2: than my people. And it's like, yeah, but that's pretty rough, dude.
- 14:31Speaker 1: That's but this is twenty thousand people, twenty what thousand people, A.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Lot of people to just point at a meat grinder
- 14:46Speaker 2: like this is some World War One sort of ambitions
- 14:50Speaker 2: on his part.
- 14:50Speaker 1: It's a lot of deaths that parent kind of just
- 14:54Speaker 1: says they're corrupted by that smell, so they're not good
- 14:59Speaker 1: any more.
- 15:00Speaker 2: He just gets to arbitrate these people's worth, okay.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Which then to me. It makes it it's harder for me.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Then when he's like, well, those white Cloaks have value,
- 15:11Speaker 1: like we shouldn't kill the white Cloaks, and I'm like, okay, okay,
- 15:16Speaker 1: mister murdering twenty thousand of the prophets followers.
- 15:22Speaker 2: That does seem a schoship, a critical.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Just a little bit. These people are bad, but those
- 15:28Speaker 1: people they're just misguided.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah, this cult has gone too far. But this cult
- 15:33Speaker 2: is like I thought you would be more of a hardliner,
- 15:36Speaker 2: binary sort of thinking on that parent.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Again, this is where I think Aaron could have come in,
- 15:41Speaker 1: Like you give Aaron, you know, have Aaron take over
- 15:45Speaker 1: for the prophet, have him come to realization, have him
- 15:50Speaker 1: tone down the fanaticism a little bit, and have him
- 15:53Speaker 1: be more of a reasonable follower of the dragon reborn
- 15:57Speaker 1: and paren and have him become the new leader and
- 16:00Speaker 1: have these people involved in the last battle then sacrifice
- 16:04Speaker 1: them in fairness.
- 16:06Speaker 2: That is kind of why he gives the White Cloaks
- 16:08Speaker 2: a second chance, is because oh God, totally is that
- 16:13Speaker 2: new leader who seems to be wanting to pull in
- 16:15Speaker 2: a different direction. I really would have loved to see
- 16:20Speaker 2: Aaron like, yeah, like take over for the prophet and
- 16:23Speaker 2: somehow like bring the rest of them through a deradicalization process,
- 16:28Speaker 2: somehow having.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Like the one that he's gone through himself.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, Like somehow pull them all through and then yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 2: maybe they all go down to a man in the
- 16:38Speaker 2: last battle because that's what the last battle needs. But
- 16:42Speaker 2: they get saved for the last to be thrown at
- 16:45Speaker 2: the last battle rather than yeah, being wasted on other humans.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Because that's parents strength's right strength. He is bringing together
- 16:52Speaker 1: all of these desperate groups of people to fight under
- 16:55Speaker 1: one banner for the Dragon Reborn. That's what he's doing.
- 16:58Speaker 1: That's why he's going on this Teverean journey and recruiting
- 17:01Speaker 1: Sean Chan and White Cloaks and Two Rivers folks, and
- 17:04Speaker 1: you know, he's bringing these groups together and and ay Eel, right,
- 17:07Speaker 1: he's bringing these groups together. Yeah, you know, I'd like
- 17:10Speaker 1: I would have liked to see him incorporate the brotherless,
- 17:13Speaker 1: see him incorporate some of the less radical people. You know,
- 17:16Speaker 1: have this army be a true pantheon of people from across.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Oh, that would have been so cool if a bunch
- 17:24Speaker 2: of Ayeel who couldn't accept Rand could accept paren right
- 17:29Speaker 2: and like they weren't able to accept the Kara Kharan,
- 17:31Speaker 2: but like they can follow the dragon reborn via parent
- 17:35Speaker 2: and like, in that way, Rand is able to marshal
- 17:39Speaker 2: more of the ideal than Yes he could. Yes, that
- 17:41Speaker 2: would have been really really satisfying.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And then you bring have Matt bringing in the shan
- 17:48Speaker 1: chan that you didn't think would otherwise fight, right, like,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and so he they both bring in, like Paren brings
- 17:54Speaker 1: in this incredible amount of shidoh and two rivers folk
- 17:58Speaker 1: and you know this this not shido but brotherless right yeah,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and all these people and the wolves, and like, yeah,
- 18:06Speaker 1: he brings in this incredible army. And so that's that's
- 18:08Speaker 1: what I would like to see, is like Paren and
- 18:11Speaker 1: Matt both bringing in their own armies to the battle.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I mean they do, they do bigger and even better.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but yeah, it is a shame that once
- 18:20Speaker 2: he gets fi Yo back, suddenly he's able to make
- 18:22Speaker 2: these like elevated arguments about how even though the White
- 18:25Speaker 2: Cloaks are like terrorist murderers, they should be allowed a
- 18:29Speaker 2: chance to fight trolls. But he couldn't see that for Masiema,
- 18:32Speaker 2: because for Messeema's cult, because Messeema's cult was a means
- 18:38Speaker 2: to an end for getting FIGHTEO back, And granted, Sanderson
- 18:41Speaker 2: does have him wrestling with his moral hypocrisy about that later,
- 18:46Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just the White Cloaks don't seem to
- 18:50Speaker 2: deserve a second chance, given that their entire multi century
- 18:54Speaker 2: military history is about being terrorists. Masseema's cult has been
- 18:57Speaker 2: around for like a year, right, you know, like the
- 19:01Speaker 2: White Cloaks have been around for centuries. Like I don't know,
- 19:05Speaker 2: I feel like they're sort of equally beyond redemption where
- 19:09Speaker 2: as they should be. But oh well that's not what
- 19:13Speaker 2: we get. I mean, yeah, they do believe differently spent uncle,
- 19:17Speaker 2: that is true, Like they're not the same, but from
- 19:20Speaker 2: where parents sitting, it seems like they should look the
- 19:24Speaker 2: same given what parent has specifically suffered from the White Cloaks.
- 19:28Speaker 2: But I mean, they're all thieves and murderers.
- 19:31Speaker 1: There's a certain amount of smell to it, right, they
- 19:34Speaker 1: smell crazy.
- 19:35Speaker 2: He does literally describe them both as having that smell.
- 19:38Speaker 2: But also there's a lot less White Cloaks by the
- 19:41Speaker 2: time he's dealing with them. It's like seven thousand white
- 19:43Speaker 2: Cloaks about to twenty thousand of Messima's rabbles, so there
- 19:47Speaker 2: might also be a sheer momentum to it. It's easier
- 19:50Speaker 2: to deal with. Also, also, let's not forget classism. The
- 19:54Speaker 2: White Cloaks are all cavalry, right.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And with armor, full set of armor, right, yeah, followers.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Yeah, so they're not just rabble. They're a genuine trained
- 20:05Speaker 2: military force, so they're higher value, which means that it's
- 20:08Speaker 2: more valuable to keep them.
- 20:11Speaker 1: You know, how how many white cloaks is twenty thousand
- 20:16Speaker 1: rabble worth one thousand two five? Probably? Not right? Could
- 20:22Speaker 1: could five five thousand cavalrymen run like run down twenty
- 20:26Speaker 1: thousand rabble? Probably? Yeah? Yeah, you know, yeah, so yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 1: they're not very valuable as troops anyway, I guess it's
- 20:35Speaker 1: sort of the point. But yeah, it just it does
- 20:38Speaker 1: seem like extermination, while satisfying, is the wrong answer for paran.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I mean, I think generally extermination is not the right answer.
- 20:46Speaker 2: You know, we probably are meant to be left dissatisfied
- 20:49Speaker 2: by an answer that involves yeah right.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Right, But I guess it's just the focus on fail.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we have to have flawed heroes, right, this is
- 20:58Speaker 2: this is a flaw.
- 20:59Speaker 1: So he encounters the I'd call it the Magden, the
- 21:04Speaker 1: and Or crowd. The yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Basil Gill and he yeah, he's sending them off. This
- 21:11Speaker 2: is kind of what triggers the encounter with the White Cloaks. Right,
- 21:14Speaker 2: he takes he sends his he sends his chambay in
- 21:18Speaker 2: with his household staff and all the furniture away, because
- 21:22Speaker 2: he's like, if things go badly, you can't defend yourselves.
- 21:25Speaker 2: You should get away now. And if things go well,
- 21:29Speaker 2: then we'll catch you up in a few days and
- 21:30Speaker 2: it'll be it'll be fine. But then they get captured
- 21:33Speaker 2: by the White Cloaks. Which is why the whole trial
- 21:36Speaker 2: and all of that happens, is because he suddenly has
- 21:39Speaker 2: delivered hostages to people he knows are murderous terrorists, the
- 21:43Speaker 2: White Cloaks, and.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Yet negotiates with them. Doesn't negotiate with the shot, not
- 21:47Speaker 1: in a little bit, not in the least.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Yeah, well, he has fail to help him be organized
- 21:52Speaker 2: when he has the other hostages. Right, Like, she handles
- 21:56Speaker 2: a hostage situation much better than he does. Also, she
- 22:00Speaker 2: was never a hostage, she was a prisoner, whereas like
- 22:03Speaker 2: these people actually are hostages. But yeah, he has to
- 22:07Speaker 2: be very firm with Lennie to get her to go.
- 22:09Speaker 2: She does not want to leave and she does not
- 22:12Speaker 2: want to acknowledge Parens, so he has to like clap
- 22:14Speaker 2: at her like she's a dog.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I love that. He turns to Master Gill and says,
- 22:19Speaker 1: Master Gill, you make sure she rides with you and
- 22:21Speaker 1: if you have to tire up and put her in
- 22:23Speaker 1: the back of the cart, and Master Gill's like, uh,
- 22:25Speaker 1: he smelled of alarms. Suddenly, no, I'm not fucking dealing.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Lenny will kick my butt, are you kidding me? Like yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 1: Master Gill is not interested in being the one responsible
- 22:38Speaker 1: for tying up Lenny.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah. But then Lenny accepts that this is the safest
- 22:43Speaker 2: thing for her and she does not make Master Gill
- 22:45Speaker 2: have to deal with that level of heart attack, and
- 22:49Speaker 2: she just cooperates, which is good. And we also get
- 22:52Speaker 2: a brief mention of some shidow Guy Shine who have
- 22:57Speaker 2: been captive since the battling and are only a few
- 23:01Speaker 2: months away from the end of their year in a day,
- 23:04Speaker 2: which is just a fun little like reminder that there
- 23:08Speaker 2: are shidoh who have nothing to do with this entire
- 23:11Speaker 2: Malden situation because they've been Guy Shine the whole time,
- 23:15Speaker 2: Like there are actually Shida running around as a guy
- 23:19Speaker 2: Shine who are going to slowly be trickling back into
- 23:21Speaker 2: ael society in the aftermath of things that they could
- 23:25Speaker 2: not have affected the entire time.
- 23:27Speaker 1: There's a real question like what are those Are they
- 23:29Speaker 1: going to go back to shidow? Are they going to stay?
- 23:32Speaker 1: Like that's where I think some people who stay guy
- 23:35Speaker 1: shine and never give it up. Some people throw away
- 23:38Speaker 1: the spear, right, Like, I mean, what do you do
- 23:40Speaker 1: if you're a shidow and you just watched your people
- 23:44Speaker 1: basically get wiped out? Yeah, for the second time, for
- 23:47Speaker 1: the second time, and like you're free, and you're like
- 23:49Speaker 1: I don't really want to be like yeah.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Free to do what?
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 23:54Speaker 2: Free to go home to nothing? Like yeah, yeah, that's
- 23:59Speaker 2: that's a wild problem that they have to deal with,
- 24:02Speaker 2: and not.
- 24:02Speaker 1: One that's really addressed in the books.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Yeah, No, not really, not really.
- 24:06Speaker 1: There's there's a certain amount of cultural fallout that I
- 24:11Speaker 1: feel like we just leave behind when we go to
- 24:13Speaker 1: Sanderson that it's more about the events of the battle
- 24:16Speaker 1: and the last battle and we kind of stop caring.
- 24:20Speaker 1: The people are all there to fight, and they all
- 24:23Speaker 1: kind of say we're gonna worry about society later because
- 24:26Speaker 1: we need to survive the last battle first, which makes sense.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But there is a lack of for me this there's
- 24:33Speaker 1: a bit of lack of closure as to how do
- 24:36Speaker 1: some of these things. But I mean, you know, it's
- 24:38Speaker 1: the wheel of time, right, there are no endings, right,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and you don't get closer on some of these things.
- 24:42Speaker 1: They're just gonna be problems and if you were writing
- 24:46Speaker 1: another story, you'd get to talk about it, but they're not.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So we just have to imagine this is a problem
- 24:52Speaker 1: and part of society moving forward with the with the iyel.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so some maidens come back saying, you know, we've
- 24:59Speaker 2: killed our first shadow for the day, We've taken out
- 25:02Speaker 2: some centuries, lost a couple of our own, like the
- 25:06Speaker 2: butcher's bill is starting to rack up already.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Dead.
- 25:11Speaker 2: And then we get mentioned of Arham and how he
- 25:15Speaker 2: gravitated towards Messima and seemed almost to bask in some
- 25:19Speaker 2: light that Messima gave off Arab and parent thinks, oh,
- 25:23Speaker 2: maybe I should have sent him away like a child.
- 25:26Speaker 2: That probably wouldn't have worked. And thus the fact that
- 25:30Speaker 2: Aaron is going to die today gets sealed.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Any reason why Berylene is wearing her cornet.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I assume that it just is the right thing to
- 25:37Speaker 2: do on a day when your soldiers are going to
- 25:40Speaker 2: be fighting in a big battle. Like it's what the
- 25:43Speaker 2: queen does or the monarch does, is like, you dress
- 25:45Speaker 2: up in your best. This is a big day for you.
- 25:48Speaker 2: You're asking men to die for you. The least you
- 25:50Speaker 2: can do is look as regnal as possible.
- 25:53Speaker 1: It's just parents for some reason, what do you think, Like.
- 25:55Speaker 2: You it seems really obvious.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems really obvious. Yeah, Okay, I have the
- 26:00Speaker 1: same sort of thing where I was like, what do
- 26:02Speaker 1: you mean for some.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Reason wearing her parade best? Like why is this hard? Sir?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Also, like if Faylle's coming back, I think she's, you know,
- 26:09Speaker 1: wants impressed.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Because like, I, yeah, for sure, at.
- 26:13Speaker 1: This point, I'm convinced Berlene is into Fayelle as she
- 26:16Speaker 1: is into parent And that's like, oh yeah, her interest
- 26:19Speaker 1: has definitely waned in Paren without fayel there to compete with, right,
- 26:25Speaker 1: That's that's what she loves. She loves the competition. That's
- 26:28Speaker 1: why Paren's been safe this whole time. There's no one
- 26:30Speaker 1: to compete with. It's really boring.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so when she rescues Faille, she wants to be,
- 26:36Speaker 2: you know, with her horse and her dress and her crown,
- 26:38Speaker 2: all looking their best.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And I know, I know Berlene has this fantasy of
- 26:43Speaker 1: riding up in her horse and saying welcome back as Fayelle,
- 26:46Speaker 1: like in her muddy dress, like oh, thank you, you've
- 26:50Speaker 1: saved me, you know, like you just you know, and
- 26:54Speaker 1: you took such good care of paren while I was gone,
- 26:57Speaker 1: Like just I know, this fantasy's playing out in Berline's head,
- 27:00Speaker 1: and of course she's got to look her best for.
- 27:01Speaker 2: It, right, Yeah, totally, totally. Berlin lives for the drama.
- 27:07Speaker 1: M She's not the only character who enjoys tea in
- 27:10Speaker 1: this series. It's just a different kind of tea indeed. Indeed,
- 27:17Speaker 1: so they send one of the wise Ones to do
- 27:19Speaker 1: the healing instead of the I Sid Eye because she's
- 27:21Speaker 1: more skilled, which is sort of an interesting sort of
- 27:25Speaker 1: conversation about where the wise One skills. Like they have
- 27:28Speaker 1: taken the learning from I mean, I think mostly Agwayne
- 27:32Speaker 1: and Moraine.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I think they've been learning from Sea to Missouri. I
- 27:36Speaker 2: mean I think that having them just around, they've been
- 27:39Speaker 2: exchanging weaves.
- 27:41Speaker 1: That's right, that's right, because they've taken on all the
- 27:42Speaker 1: Isid Eye apprentices for a long.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Time, right, even the ones who are not technically apprentices,
- 27:47Speaker 2: they're still basically apprentices, so like they've been learning from them,
- 27:51Speaker 2: they've been extracting information from the eyeid Eye.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I love that the universal interaction between the Wise Ones
- 27:57Speaker 1: and the I Sid Eye is wise ones going, oh,
- 28:01Speaker 1: you need some.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Learning, right, Like you have some academic knowledge, but you
- 28:08Speaker 2: your practical applied versatility is really lacking. But yeah, I said,
- 28:14Speaker 2: I do have some academic knowledge that like actually does
- 28:17Speaker 2: expand the Wise Ones's ability to do stuff like healing.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Like they didn't know some of this like technical stuff.
- 28:23Speaker 2: But as soon as they have that info, they're running
- 28:26Speaker 2: with it in a way that the Eyes to Die
- 28:28Speaker 2: are left in the dust about right. Paren gets a
- 28:32Speaker 2: mention of Rand, which gives him a flash of colors
- 28:34Speaker 2: showing him that Rand has lost his hand and.
- 28:37Speaker 1: He's hanging out with Min and a tall man in
- 28:39Speaker 1: a black coat. I think that's just Logain because that's
- 28:42Speaker 1: who he was talking to. Ye again, that's going to
- 28:45Speaker 1: be after the last chapter two chapters ago, right, So
- 28:50Speaker 1: when in episode five, when he lost his hand.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we're all all kinds of aligned right now. All
- 28:55Speaker 2: the timeline.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Jordan's like, all right, I'm sinking it up hard right.
- 28:59Speaker 1: The guy who makes the timeline was like, oh, this
- 29:01Speaker 1: is easy breeze.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Indeed. So there's some questioning about why Honora and Missouri
- 29:10Speaker 2: have been meeting with Massima and why he's been allowing it.
- 29:13Speaker 2: I still don't understand all that stuff. It doesn't seem
- 29:15Speaker 2: like it really matters.
- 29:17Speaker 1: So, yeah, it's one of those things where they thought
- 29:21Speaker 1: they could talk him into not they didn't realize he
- 29:24Speaker 1: was crazy, I think is what it boils down to,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and they thought they could talk to him like another ruler.
- 29:28Speaker 1: They thought they could be the isid I who talks
- 29:30Speaker 1: him around to a sane place, and they just didn't
- 29:34Speaker 1: realize they were dealing with religious fanaticism. And it took
- 29:37Speaker 1: them a lot longer than it should have for them
- 29:41Speaker 1: to understand that their abilities were never going to convince
- 29:46Speaker 1: this man to act in the way that they thought
- 29:48Speaker 1: he was supposed to, and that he was a rabbit
- 29:50Speaker 1: dog that needed to be put down. And I think
- 29:52Speaker 1: it just everybody else saw it, and they're just self delusion.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Themselves into thinking they could talk him out of it. Sure, yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 1: that's that's the only thing I've got, right, And then
- 30:02Speaker 1: there's that whole like weird thing where Noura thing feels
- 30:05Speaker 1: like she betrayed Berylayne and that's why she burns herself
- 30:09Speaker 1: out to rescue Gallaud. Right Like, so this is all
- 30:11Speaker 1: leading up to the rescue of Galud and bringing him back,
- 30:14Speaker 1: which is leads to the demise of Demondrad. Right. Yeah,
- 30:18Speaker 1: so this is all important in that the death of
- 30:20Speaker 1: Demondrad and the winning of the battle.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Yeah well really, I mean, glag could have died. His
- 30:24Speaker 2: part in that battle was already done, but was saved
- 30:27Speaker 2: as sort of beside the point. Oh no, because he's
- 30:29Speaker 2: able to hand off the things exactly.
- 30:32Speaker 1: He has to hand off the medallion. If he doesn't
- 30:34Speaker 1: hand off the medallion, Land never gets.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It, right, No, yeah, you're right. He does have to
- 30:38Speaker 2: get saved in order for Demondred to die. It's all
- 30:40Speaker 2: so we can kill Demondred.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Mm. Yeah. Paren hates being around Messima because he constantly
- 30:46Speaker 1: talks about the Lord Dragon and he's constantly like the
- 30:48Speaker 1: colors of swirling and constantly seeing Rand, which he doesn't
- 30:51Speaker 1: want to because we all know what Rand's been up
- 30:53Speaker 1: too lately with the women in his life, because Matt's
- 31:01Speaker 1: had a couple of glimpses. Everybody knows what RAN's doing
- 31:03Speaker 1: in bed. He's bonded to too many damn people.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah, they get some scouting reports from the Shan Chan
- 31:12Speaker 2: that the other i Yield clans, the other Shidow clans
- 31:16Speaker 2: are coming pretty quickly from both sides, and then Parent
- 31:20Speaker 2: decides they won't get here in time. We go forward
- 31:24Speaker 2: as planned. We're not adjusting anything.
- 31:26Speaker 1: He said earlier in the chapter they'd be done by noon,
- 31:28Speaker 1: and then they said these people aren't going to get
- 31:29Speaker 1: here by noon, which is cutting it kind of close
- 31:31Speaker 1: if you need to, like, you know, escape, But I'm
- 31:33Speaker 1: assuming gateways are going to be enough for them to
- 31:35Speaker 1: get out, right. I don't hear something or something I
- 31:38Speaker 1: don't remember what ends up happening with those extra.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Stop and then turn around. What happens is like their
- 31:45Speaker 2: forward scouts see the battle happening, they see the Shadow losing,
- 31:49Speaker 2: and the clans both stop and then retreat, and I
- 31:54Speaker 2: think they ultimately do move into Malden afterwards, But like
- 31:57Speaker 2: they they don't engage.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Do they become part of of Thrava's sort of.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Presumably, yeah, presumably they join up with her on her
- 32:05Speaker 2: way out, and yeah, this pov ends with the wolves howling,
- 32:12Speaker 2: so again sinking us up with what was happening in
- 32:15Speaker 2: the last chapter. So we switch povs back to Fayel.
- 32:33Speaker 2: More time has passed. Everyone's throat is dry, Makedan's strength
- 32:38Speaker 2: is running down. She's not making the scarf move as
- 32:42Speaker 2: often as before. But we've now been found. The faces
- 32:47Speaker 2: appear at the edge and the rescue operation begins in earnest.
- 32:53Speaker 2: This is where Therrell and Aravine finally managed to you know,
- 32:57Speaker 2: spot them and say yes they're a and sort to
- 33:01Speaker 2: communicate about how Aryl tracked them, and then he was
- 33:05Speaker 2: crying and he saw Gillina pull the lever, and then
- 33:08Speaker 2: Roland says, we can catch up later. For now, I
- 33:10Speaker 2: need to get you out of this literal death trap fail.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Galina had promised, could the woman be black a Jahn?
- 33:16Speaker 1: You think you think Fayil, Yeah.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yes she did, she very much could.
- 33:22Speaker 1: And then yeah, the brothers show up and start digging
- 33:25Speaker 1: them out, and you know, of course promises to smack
- 33:27Speaker 1: her bottom and then kiss.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Her isn't that great?
- 33:30Speaker 1: I was good, not corrosive. Crosive is not the word
- 33:33Speaker 1: I'm looking for, Yes, thank you. VG.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Coercive coercive, Yes, he's being coercive, Yes, very much so.
- 33:40Speaker 2: And this is the part where Fayel decides that if
- 33:43Speaker 2: she has to sleep with him in order to get out,
- 33:46Speaker 2: she's going to do it, and that's why she feels
- 33:48Speaker 2: guilty later. She hasn't done anything to feel guilty about
- 33:53Speaker 2: until now, but this is the moment when she thinks,
- 33:57Speaker 2: if I have to do what I have to do,
- 33:58Speaker 2: I'm going to do it and PAREN will never have
- 34:01Speaker 2: to find out. This is the moment she betrays parent
- 34:03Speaker 2: in her own mind.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Even the later he says, it's fine, right, I don't
- 34:07Speaker 1: really care if something like that happened, like I understand,
- 34:10Speaker 1: survival is important, and she comes back with no, very indignant,
- 34:15Speaker 1: I would never do something like that, when it's like,
- 34:18Speaker 1: you know you would have.
- 34:19Speaker 2: You just got lucky, right, And this is the moment
- 34:23Speaker 2: when she decides, I'm gonna do what I have to do,
- 34:25Speaker 2: and thus it doesn't matter whether or not she follows through.
- 34:28Speaker 2: She made the decision. That's how she sees it. I
- 34:31Speaker 2: think that's a ridiculous point of no grade of principle
- 34:35Speaker 2: and honor. But nonetheless, this is the moment that she
- 34:38Speaker 2: feels guilty about.
- 34:40Speaker 1: There's an episode of Buffy which I always I hate
- 34:43Speaker 1: to bring up, but I always got to bring up,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and it's all about she gets in her own head.
- 34:49Speaker 1: She basically is like, I've given up. I've failed, I've
- 34:52Speaker 1: completely failed. And it comes back to there was a
- 34:55Speaker 1: moment in her day when she was putting a book
- 34:58Speaker 1: on the shelf, and for that moment, she gave up.
- 35:02Speaker 1: The moment later she was immediately back in the fight, right,
- 35:04Speaker 1: but like, for that split second, she gave up, and
- 35:07Speaker 1: she punished herself forever for that moment. And this sort
- 35:13Speaker 1: of has the same feeling to me, you know, is
- 35:15Speaker 1: this idea of like and didn't sleep with him, but
- 35:18Speaker 1: in that moment, I realized I would have to get
- 35:22Speaker 1: what I want, And now I have to punish myself
- 35:24Speaker 1: for that realization.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I cannot relate at all. I definitely have
- 35:29Speaker 2: never held myself to account for a bad thought. For decades,
- 35:33Speaker 2: that's never happened.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Good good, I'm glad you've never experienced that, because it's awful.
- 35:39Speaker 1: It's really fucking awful.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I've absolutely experienced that. Yeah, I know, like never in
- 35:48Speaker 2: quite such stark and ridiculous terms is what Fayla is
- 35:51Speaker 2: going through because I don't have quite that exciting of
- 35:54Speaker 2: a life, but like, yeah, yeah, holding yourself to account
- 35:59Speaker 2: for a thought you had a way beyond the point
- 36:01Speaker 2: of reasonableness is very relatable.
- 36:04Speaker 1: So then that's a very quick fight yell, chunk, and
- 36:06Speaker 1: then we're right back to Paren.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but it allows us to get a sense of
- 36:10Speaker 2: time passing. Even though it's a brief page count, it
- 36:13Speaker 2: covers a lot of like ephemeral time mm hmmmm.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Them trapped in the basement basically trying to get out, waiting.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and Paren waiting for people to finish assembling and organizing,
- 36:25Speaker 2: and it's just it's it's a hurry up and wait
- 36:27Speaker 2: sort of moments.
- 36:28Speaker 1: As at this time, all the wise ones are drinking
- 36:31Speaker 1: the water and hopefully either passing out or losing their
- 36:34Speaker 1: ability to.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Channel right exactly, we're just waiting for that to happen.
- 36:38Speaker 2: The sun is rising, but like there's just nothing interesting
- 36:40Speaker 2: for the first like two hours, so we have to
- 36:42Speaker 2: pass it with the time jump or with the POV switch, and.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So parent's waiting for Grady to bring the rest of
- 36:50Speaker 1: the two Rivers Folks, led by Tam yes to the battle.
- 36:54Speaker 1: That's like what the timing he's waiting on is like,
- 36:57Speaker 1: go get the rest of my troops basically, And like
- 37:00Speaker 1: when Tam walks in, I just it feels like those
- 37:02Speaker 1: old eighties shows when guest starred walk in. Everyone starts
- 37:05Speaker 1: cheering and they have to wait three seconds before they
- 37:08Speaker 1: can say their first line because the live audience don't
- 37:10Speaker 1: shut that all up. Yeah, that's that's when Tam walks in.
- 37:14Speaker 1: He's my like go nuts because I love him.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Appearance, Yeah, definitely.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So yeah, off the left of Bluish Flash appeared. I
- 37:22Speaker 1: assume that's a gateway opening, right, yep. Yeah, and then
- 37:25Speaker 1: Tam comes stumbling out with a good number three thousand,
- 37:30Speaker 1: I think bowman.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's a bunch of two rivers Folk that
- 37:35Speaker 2: are old school two rivers Folk, and also a whole
- 37:38Speaker 2: bunch of the new Outlanders who say, you know, this
- 37:40Speaker 2: is our adopted home. We are two rivers Folk now,
- 37:44Speaker 2: and we will come fight for you just as if
- 37:46Speaker 2: we had been around since the days of Menetherne.
- 37:49Speaker 1: And yes, we can't necessarily pull a Two Rivers long bow,
- 37:51Speaker 1: but we're going to pretend that we can and you know,
- 37:54Speaker 1: grab regular long bows that shoot two hundred feet as
- 37:56Speaker 1: opposed to the four hundred feet that the Two Rivers
- 37:58Speaker 1: ones do.
- 37:59Speaker 2: We can still shoot accurately, just not with your bows.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Right, right, not quite as far, but sure we're still
- 38:07Speaker 1: going to take out a bunch of people in the
- 38:08Speaker 1: space when they get close enough. And we get a
- 38:11Speaker 1: bunch of news from the Two Rivers, right, so it's
- 38:13Speaker 1: sort of a bump and a bump bump news update
- 38:16Speaker 1: from the Two Rivers. Right, mas room Time has went
- 38:21Speaker 1: to the Two Rivers and recruited about forty men and
- 38:24Speaker 1: boys to take to the Black Tower, because, of course
- 38:26Speaker 1: the Two Rivers is a very high concentration of old magic. Right.
- 38:32Speaker 1: We see the Varren does it with the girls, and
- 38:35Speaker 1: she even she's like, I would take more if I
- 38:37Speaker 1: could have. This is just a limit. And so same
- 38:39Speaker 1: thing with masroom Time.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and this is also when Tam says, so are
- 38:46Speaker 2: you not gonna tell me about ramping the Dragon? You're
- 38:51Speaker 2: just never gonna mention that, and Paren is like, correct,
- 38:56Speaker 2: I was never going to mention that. I will continue
- 38:58Speaker 2: to not mention that.
- 38:59Speaker 1: There's nothing we can do moving on, right, Like that's
- 39:02Speaker 1: really like.
- 39:03Speaker 2: It's funny because paren thinks that he's somehow answering or
- 39:07Speaker 2: not answering a question to Tam. But Tam has known
- 39:12Speaker 2: since the day he found a baby in a battle field.
- 39:17Speaker 1: On the snow on Dragon Mount.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, like Tam knew. Tam has known that something was
- 39:26Speaker 2: gonna happen.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Okay, why didn't he teach him the fucking sword?
- 39:33Speaker 2: Because he was in denial while while while Rand was growing.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Up, like Dam's dark rent. I'm convinced. Okay, So I
- 39:45Speaker 1: like that little theory. What if Tam was a dark friend?
- 39:48Speaker 1: What would he do? Well, exactly what he did. He
- 39:51Speaker 1: would take the baby and hide away and not teach
- 39:53Speaker 1: him any of the skills he needs and not prep
- 39:56Speaker 1: him for the real world, just raise him as some
- 39:59Speaker 1: po dunk farmer without any skills, set him up to
- 40:03Speaker 1: be corrupted.
- 40:06Speaker 2: The entire speech about how it's because I was raised better.
- 40:10Speaker 1: It's just absolutely what happened. It's just evil not understanding
- 40:16Speaker 1: that like raising him with good farm values is like
- 40:19Speaker 1: actually counterproductive. It's it's absolutely like like AHAs like he's
- 40:25Speaker 1: such a city guy. He's like raised him like a
- 40:27Speaker 1: farm boy, and he'll be worthless.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Problem.
- 40:33Speaker 1: It's a real problem. That's what I'm saying. That's what
- 40:35Speaker 1: I'm saying. That's that's actually what Sidin Insidar represent is
- 40:40Speaker 1: the rural urban divide. You know, that's why the white
- 40:43Speaker 1: towers in the middle of the city and the black
- 40:45Speaker 1: towers out like in the country.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:49Speaker 1: You got basically a bunch of alguides so swire leaving
- 40:52Speaker 1: the tents. I don't know why. I assume is that
- 40:58Speaker 1: just because parents walking out.
- 41:00Speaker 2: No, they haven't walked out yet. They're still behind the
- 41:02Speaker 2: fog line and they're looking down, and suddenly a group
- 41:06Speaker 2: of algais why head out, headed straight towards them. What
- 41:10Speaker 2: they're doing is they're just heading straight up the hill
- 41:12Speaker 2: into the fog. But paren happens to be directly in
- 41:15Speaker 2: front of them, just hidden by said fog, and he says, well, okay,
- 41:18Speaker 2: looks like this is the moment that we start walking
- 41:20Speaker 2: out with the fog.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Then is that tavern? What's going on there? Why are
- 41:24Speaker 1: they leaving? Is it because the wise one are passing out?
- 41:26Speaker 1: Wise ones are passing out from the tee? Is it
- 41:30Speaker 1: like that's I couldn't figure out why this group of algeisis,
- 41:33Speaker 1: why are gathered and leaving the group?
- 41:37Speaker 2: It says the Shadows sent out rating parties frequently, but
- 41:40Speaker 2: this one was aimed straight at paren So I always
- 41:43Speaker 2: assumed that, yeah, it was sort of a well we
- 41:45Speaker 2: do this anyway, go just sometimes go out and maybe
- 41:50Speaker 2: the wise ones are falling asleep. This fog is a
- 41:52Speaker 2: little creepy, like, let's go out, let's let's do our thing.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Let's go out and see what's going on. And they
- 41:59Speaker 2: go out to see what's going on, and it turns
- 42:02Speaker 2: into a pitched battle.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Got it? So this is where he this morning. He
- 42:07Speaker 1: lets the knotted rope fall, right, He's like, that's I'm
- 42:10Speaker 1: done waiting. It's time for action.
- 42:13Speaker 2: He also drapes his cloak over a bush and is like,
- 42:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna come back for it later. And it just
- 42:18Speaker 2: seems like the most random detail.
- 42:21Speaker 1: It is a little random.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I don't think you're gonna remember which bush up on
- 42:25Speaker 2: top of the hillslope to come back to for your
- 42:27Speaker 2: cloak after this battle.
- 42:28Speaker 1: My dear see, I would disagree. I have been with
- 42:31Speaker 1: people where we have gone to concerts where it was like, oh,
- 42:34Speaker 1: you can't bring a pocket knife in or something like that.
- 42:36Speaker 1: And what do people do. They take whatever they can't bring,
- 42:39Speaker 1: or like a drink or something or drugs, right, and
- 42:41Speaker 1: they just go and they put it, bury it behind
- 42:43Speaker 1: a bush in someone's yard for a second, go to
- 42:46Speaker 1: the concert, come back out, and grab it on their
- 42:48Speaker 1: way back.
- 42:48Speaker 2: I've never known someone to do that.
- 42:50Speaker 1: I've seen it happen multiple times.
- 42:55Speaker 2: It just seems like it'll be a low priority to
- 42:58Speaker 2: go searching this rig for your cape after surviving.
- 43:03Speaker 1: A battle.
- 43:06Speaker 2: In a concert.
- 43:07Speaker 1: You kind of have to ride back that way to
- 43:09Speaker 1: get back to your home base. Anyway, might as well
- 43:11Speaker 1: just grab it on the way. I don't know. I
- 43:13Speaker 1: guess you get in the way and what else you
- 43:15Speaker 1: can do? Throw it on the ground like what.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I don't know. It's just it just feels like a
- 43:20Speaker 2: funny little detail. But either way, he ditches his cape
- 43:24Speaker 2: and his worry not cord thing. He ditches them both
- 43:29Speaker 2: and just starts walking down the hill slope with Arim
- 43:32Speaker 2: at his side. And so yeah, you get this this
- 43:35Speaker 2: moment where just two men emerge from the fog, and
- 43:37Speaker 2: the shadow think, oh, no big deal, we'll just kill them,
- 43:40Speaker 2: and then just an army materializes, like from ten feet
- 43:44Speaker 2: behind them, just like.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, this scene is great. I was saying beforehand
- 43:49Speaker 1: how cool it was to have this moment where you know,
- 43:53Speaker 1: two men come out to confront four hundred, and the
- 43:56Speaker 1: four hundred over confidently start charging at them, and then
- 43:59Speaker 1: the whole arm he emerges from behind them. It's a
- 44:01Speaker 1: very Avengers endgame, right with the portals. The two guys
- 44:06Speaker 1: start charging and then all the portals open up behind them,
- 44:09Speaker 1: and there's way more allies than you think. Like this
- 44:12Speaker 1: is a very similar right, Like it feels like, oh,
- 44:14Speaker 1: Aaron and parent are running in a group of four
- 44:16Speaker 1: hundred outide assist why and then behind them from the
- 44:19Speaker 1: fog emerges a whole army.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Yeah, And all of parens Aeel have to wear red
- 44:25Speaker 2: armbands because the wetlanders can't tell ay Eel apart, and
- 44:29Speaker 2: he's afraid that they'll kill their own allies, and so
- 44:34Speaker 2: they all have to wear red armbands. And they're all
- 44:36Speaker 2: mad about it, but it is what it is.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Do a red arm I like Paren with the knife
- 44:42Speaker 1: in one hand and the hammer in the other. I
- 44:44Speaker 1: don't think we've seen him fight knife and hammer. He
- 44:47Speaker 1: usually has like or does he usually have knife and hammer.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I think he's usually just had the axe.
- 44:53Speaker 2: I think he usually is fighting with the axe, and
- 44:55Speaker 2: that's a two handed weapon. He I think this is
- 44:58Speaker 2: the first time he's gone into battle with the hammer
- 45:01Speaker 2: as one weapon. I don't think we've seen him do
- 45:05Speaker 2: that before, and so this is a new weapon set
- 45:09Speaker 2: up for him. For whatever reason. The hammer is not
- 45:12Speaker 2: a two handed weapon in the way that an ax
- 45:14Speaker 2: was would.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Because that's heavier. Is no. No, no, I was just
- 45:19Speaker 1: because I'm on my reread of the original. I'm back
- 45:22Speaker 1: in my original reread. I'm one book four to five now,
- 45:25Speaker 1: So I just read about him getting the hammer, and
- 45:29Speaker 1: it's a ten pound hammer and it's about twice the
- 45:31Speaker 1: weight of the five pound acts. Yeah.
- 45:34Speaker 2: So I don't know why he treated the acts like
- 45:36Speaker 2: a two handed weapon and the hammer as a one
- 45:38Speaker 2: handed weapon, but for whatever reason, that's how he's fighting
- 45:41Speaker 2: in this battle. And so, yeah, he has a knife
- 45:43Speaker 2: in his offhand.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I mean he's powerful enough to swing the ten pound hammer.
- 45:47Speaker 1: That's like the whole thing is like, he is strong
- 45:49Speaker 1: enough to do that, and that's incredibly strong. Again, it's
- 45:52Speaker 1: not on juggling levels of unrealistic in these books. But
- 45:55Speaker 1: it's pretty unrealistic, right, Like a ten pound hammer is
- 45:58Speaker 1: too much weight to swing for very long, especially in battle. However,
- 46:02Speaker 1: it is devastating.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, blunt forest trauma is quite powerful. Tam has
- 46:08Speaker 2: this comment about how he had hoped never to hear
- 46:11Speaker 2: the aeal spear and buckler rattle again. He's like, yeah,
- 46:14Speaker 2: I heard that sound in the Ieal War, reminding us
- 46:17Speaker 2: about when he found Rand, right, like the Ieal War
- 46:21Speaker 2: was the last time he heard that sound. And he's like, hmm,
- 46:23Speaker 2: that's given me some uncomfortable flashbacks.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Like oh, that's bad. That's bad.
- 46:28Speaker 2: And they're they're still waiting to see if the tea worked,
- 46:31Speaker 2: and they're waiting, waiting, waiting. Tam is getting the battle started.
- 46:35Speaker 2: They're waiting, waiting, waiting.
- 46:37Speaker 1: He's talking this this wise one Adara, I like this.
- 46:41Speaker 1: He suspected she was far older than she appeared. She
- 46:43Speaker 1: appears about parents age. Wicky says she's anywhere from seventy
- 46:47Speaker 1: to one hundred and forty, So yeah, not exactly twenty.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Uh huh uh uh yeah, a bit older than you, Yeah, just.
- 46:54Speaker 1: A little bit. You were right, she is a bit older,
- 46:56Speaker 1: So I thought that was an interesting little He's like,
- 46:58Speaker 1: she seems older. I'm like, yeah, she is a lot
- 47:02Speaker 1: nice catch.
- 47:03Speaker 2: And then they learn they see the Man of fireballs
- 47:06Speaker 2: coming out and they say fifteen to twenty wise ones
- 47:09Speaker 2: escaped the tea, which means hundreds of wise ones.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Yeah, they got most of them, ducks right now, they
- 47:15Speaker 1: got most of them for sure.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Yeah, like Therava and a few of her people basically
- 47:20Speaker 2: are most of who escaped.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Well, and I'm wondering how many of them are seeing
- 47:23Speaker 1: how few people are actually channeling and just aren't responding
- 47:27Speaker 1: right right, there might there might be as many as
- 47:29Speaker 1: another fifty right who didn't get caught. We're just like, nope,
- 47:33Speaker 1: that's that's not enough of a response.
- 47:35Speaker 2: That doesn't seem very ieal, no.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Fair enough, but it does seem very shadow.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Eh true true. And she thinks also about this, this
- 47:45Speaker 2: is the the shadow had violated to such a degree
- 47:49Speaker 2: it was questionable whether they could be a yeel any longer.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Right right, That's where they're not really illeal.
- 47:55Speaker 2: It's like, I guess we're going to allow you to
- 47:57Speaker 2: get sold into chattel slavery with the Shan Shan because
- 48:00Speaker 2: you aren't actually part of our planet or our kith
- 48:03Speaker 2: and kin anymore.
- 48:05Speaker 1: And so those four thousand or five thousand all god, sis,
- 48:08Speaker 1: why turn into twenty thousand because they all now there's
- 48:11Speaker 1: a force out there challenging them that basically brings out
- 48:15Speaker 1: the rest of the force, and it's pretty much all
- 48:16Speaker 1: the fighting forces and that the Shidow have as far
- 48:18Speaker 1: as I can tell.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Yeah, they go from wandering around getting breakfast to full
- 48:23Speaker 2: battle formation in like five minutes, and then they start
- 48:27Speaker 2: singing in parts they wash the spears song mm hmm.
- 48:30Speaker 2: And then Tam remembers that geometry is a thing and
- 48:35Speaker 2: uses the elevation to his advantage to fire parents like, oh,
- 48:38Speaker 2: it's too soon. But then it's like, no, they had
- 48:41Speaker 2: their much higher than the shadow. They've got longer reach
- 48:44Speaker 2: than the normal.
- 48:45Speaker 1: It feels like something that parents shouldn't have missed is
- 48:47Speaker 1: the higher elevation means you can shoot further. Thing like
- 48:50Speaker 1: that seems very obvious.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Well, it's again it's the tunnel vision of being so
- 48:55Speaker 2: close to the culmination of what you've been imaginings. His
- 48:58Speaker 2: critical thinking has shut off at the point.
- 49:00Speaker 1: It really has. Well, it's a good thing he's got
- 49:02Speaker 1: Tam there to be like, now.
- 49:03Speaker 2: You fire exactly exactly.
- 49:06Speaker 1: But yeah, so in each wave, they're not killing thousands
- 49:09Speaker 1: with each wave, but they are killing hundreds with each
- 49:11Speaker 1: wave of weapons, right and twenty thousand. You know how
- 49:15Speaker 1: many waves of arrows are you getting off?
- 49:18Speaker 2: Well, it's all about a multi phase attack. They're starting
- 49:21Speaker 2: out with the relatively low effort arrows because that is
- 49:24Speaker 2: what works best at a distance, while because it allows
- 49:28Speaker 2: the others to close right the shidow, we're busy dealing
- 49:32Speaker 2: with arrows from above while Paren and his friends get closer.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Well, and while the forsaken or while the wise ones
- 49:40Speaker 1: in the isida can start attacking right right, So they
- 49:43Speaker 1: need to get they need to be in danger before
- 49:45Speaker 1: they can be attacked.
- 49:46Speaker 2: And some of the shidow also peel off to north
- 49:48Speaker 2: and south right, that's another part of it. But Paren
- 49:53Speaker 2: and Tily anticipated that. So that's where the shan chin
- 49:56Speaker 2: are is waiting to take the flankers head on, which
- 50:00Speaker 2: I didn't really understand how that strategy worked until this read,
- 50:03Speaker 2: but now I get it.
- 50:04Speaker 1: It is like, yeah, wait for them to splinter themselves
- 50:06Speaker 1: and then attack the wings with the reserve troops. They
- 50:10Speaker 1: didn't know you had which are the shan Chan channelers
- 50:14Speaker 1: that tear apart the wings.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you outflank the flankers and then everyone has a
- 50:18Speaker 2: bad time.
- 50:19Speaker 1: And yeah, Tyli claimed that demone were used for all
- 50:22Speaker 1: sorts of tasks, but the truth was they were weapons
- 50:24Speaker 1: of war and they and the sul Dam were very
- 50:27Speaker 1: good at it. And that's just The Wise Ones have
- 50:33Speaker 1: never been warriors ever.
- 50:36Speaker 2: No, No, they negotiate peace. They do not lead to
- 50:40Speaker 2: the battles.
- 50:41Speaker 1: So yeah, shortly after the shan Chan began tearing apart
- 50:44Speaker 1: the flanks, the Isidie and the Wise Ones start tearing
- 50:47Speaker 1: apart the central group because they feel threatened enough to
- 50:50Speaker 1: do so.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Yeah. And I thought that it says here that the
- 50:56Speaker 2: Wise Ones in the isid I both used throwing motions
- 50:59Speaker 2: to make fireballs. I thought that the Wise Ones didn't
- 51:03Speaker 2: do all the arm waving.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, they did criticize the ide the I said
- 51:08Speaker 1: I for doing that.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Yeah, So I was a little surprised to read that here, Like,
- 51:12Speaker 2: I thought that you didn't do the arm waving, But
- 51:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Where is that. Yeah, and can you imagine these these
- 51:22Speaker 1: I feel like this is a if you're a shadow
- 51:24Speaker 1: who survived you my as wells, and ends up in
- 51:26Speaker 1: this situation, oh man, where you saw the like rolling
- 51:32Speaker 1: ring of earth and fire and your fellows get just
- 51:35Speaker 1: torn apart, and you fled and survived that and joined Savannah,
- 51:38Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you're like, fuck, not again.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be rough. And I mean, Paren, you
- 51:48Speaker 2: know thinks here, You know, flesh can only take so much.
- 51:51Speaker 2: The shadow begin to fall back, and I'm like, yeah,
- 51:53Speaker 2: how much sooner are they falling back than normal? Because
- 51:56Speaker 2: they are in a post to my as well as world.
- 51:59Speaker 1: That's a good point, right.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Like they don't break, but they do fall back in
- 52:03Speaker 2: my mind kind of quickly, and I wonder if it's
- 52:05Speaker 2: because like they understand the futility of standing against this
- 52:09Speaker 2: much power.
- 52:10Speaker 1: And so as they start to fall back, the archers
- 52:12Speaker 1: start to advance, right, like to keep the distance shorter
- 52:17Speaker 1: between them so they can continue to fire, which is
- 52:19Speaker 1: just brutal. Right, interesting statement here about the fair illness
- 52:24Speaker 1: in Paren where his blood was becoming fire. Alias claimed
- 52:28Speaker 1: it was a natural feeling when you were in danger
- 52:29Speaker 1: of your life, but he had almost drowned in the
- 52:32Speaker 1: water would once and he felt nothing like this, just
- 52:35Speaker 1: that interesting, like No, there is a certain thrill about
- 52:38Speaker 1: attacking and fighting, and that specifically killing, I think is
- 52:41Speaker 1: where that thrill is coming from.
- 52:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Alias didn't think it was necessary to specify
- 52:48Speaker 2: the difference between fighting for your life and having an accident.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Paren is like, well, but technically it's not the same,
- 52:56Speaker 2: and it's like, Paren, there's a difference. Elias was talking
- 53:00Speaker 2: as a wolf who goes hunting, right, Chasing down dangerous
- 53:03Speaker 2: prey is not the same thing as falling through the
- 53:06Speaker 2: ice in a frozen river.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Like, so you're saying Parent took him a little too literally.
- 53:11Speaker 2: Yes, Paren is such a literal person, and like, I'm
- 53:15Speaker 2: a very literal person. But I'm like, Karen, my dude,
- 53:18Speaker 2: come on a little symbolic thinking now and I'll kill you.
- 53:22Speaker 1: So yeah. Then he's like in the middle of the fight,
- 53:25Speaker 1: and I assume Tayim is shooting over his shoulder at
- 53:29Speaker 1: the shadow, right it says the shaft took him. I'm
- 53:31Speaker 1: just I'm just gonna assume not Tayim. Tam Tam Tam Tam.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree that Tam is definitely specifically following
- 53:40Speaker 2: Paren downslope and firing at people who are specifically in
- 53:43Speaker 2: front of him because he wouldn't trust anyone else to
- 53:45Speaker 2: do it. But Tam has the ability to do that.
- 53:48Speaker 1: And we also see him doing that with Lan when
- 53:50Speaker 1: he's going after the Mongrant in the last battle. So
- 53:52Speaker 1: my head canon is he's doing it here too, absolutely
- 53:55Speaker 1: clear him a path boys.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and then eventually him and aarm who's running right
- 54:00Speaker 2: beside him because Aaron, you know, Aaron even earlier has
- 54:03Speaker 2: parent thinks he has this scent of someone who's going
- 54:06Speaker 2: into you know, hunting dangerous prey, and it's like he's
- 54:09Speaker 2: hunting you. He knows that he's going to turn on
- 54:12Speaker 2: you and kill you at some point in this battle.
- 54:14Speaker 2: That's why he's keeping you. That's why he smells focused
- 54:17Speaker 2: like that's what he's doing. And so yeah, they plunge
- 54:22Speaker 2: into the hand to hand combat side by side. As
- 54:25Speaker 2: the battle gets joined, they work very well to take
- 54:29Speaker 2: out the first six people. It's a pretty intense, intense
- 54:33Speaker 2: little fight sequence, and then the chapter ends as as
- 54:38Speaker 2: they pass through their first six pack of shido.
- 54:42Speaker 1: I mean this the description is brutal. He blocks his
- 54:45Speaker 1: spear with his knife, parents swung his hammer. The shidow
- 54:48Speaker 1: tried to stop it with his buckler, but he altered
- 54:50Speaker 1: the swing slightly and heard the bones in the man's
- 54:53Speaker 1: forearms snap under ten pounds of steel swung by a
- 54:57Speaker 1: blacksmith's hammer. I mean, I mean brutal. Right, this is
- 55:01Speaker 1: like skilled fire who tries to go for a block
- 55:04Speaker 1: and all and Parent just basically a nice block. I'm
- 55:06Speaker 1: crushing your arm anyway.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Right, this is not a finesse move. I'm doing just
- 55:13Speaker 2: pure momentum.
- 55:16Speaker 1: And then he just cuts the guy's throat because he
- 55:18Speaker 1: got his arm crushed and he has no defenses anymore.
- 55:20Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean it's Paren is a force of
- 55:23Speaker 1: fucking nature. He is huge, he is brutal. I mean,
- 55:25Speaker 1: he is thor with his hammer.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Because that is what he's doing. He's rolling through them
- 55:33Speaker 2: like a boulder tumbling downhill. And they're all, you know,
- 55:37Speaker 2: dexterous fighters that are all nimble, and it's like, but
- 55:40Speaker 2: how do you fight a landslide?
- 55:42Speaker 1: Right, you don't. You don't get out of its way
- 55:45Speaker 1: or you die. Yeah, And that's what Parent is here
- 55:47Speaker 1: is a landslide with I mean, with Aaron being incredibly
- 55:50Speaker 1: you know again, this is one of those situations where
- 55:52Speaker 1: like really Aaron in his nine months of training, is
- 55:55Speaker 1: a better swordsman than these ieel who were raised on
- 55:58Speaker 1: spear or spearman. Like, I know he's obsessive, but come on, Yeah,
- 56:04Speaker 1: Aaron's skills always seemed unreasonable to me, more so than
- 56:06Speaker 1: even like Rand's.
- 56:08Speaker 2: Agreed, It's like Aaron has is even better than Rand
- 56:12Speaker 2: at picking up sword skills. Like it's just like, I'm sorry.
- 56:15Speaker 1: That's at least Rand all the boys. The three boys
- 56:19Speaker 1: have the advantage of memories that aren't theirs, right, Paren
- 56:26Speaker 1: can pick up wolf memories for the generations, you know,
- 56:29Speaker 1: whether that's on an instinctual level when he's fighting. I
- 56:32Speaker 1: do think that helps him fight better. Right, Matt has
- 56:35Speaker 1: all of the memories from he had some of those
- 56:37Speaker 1: memories from before he went through the gateway. He has
- 56:40Speaker 1: all of these memories about battle now that he has
- 56:44Speaker 1: gone through the gateway and got his holes filled. And
- 56:48Speaker 1: Rand of course has you know, LTT's legitimate memories in
- 56:51Speaker 1: his head. So it's just interesting that all three of
- 56:53Speaker 1: the boys sort of get this like level up where
- 56:55Speaker 1: they don't actually they can get skills externally from other.
- 57:00Speaker 2: People, right, And we're supposed to believe that Aaron, without
- 57:04Speaker 2: that is able to surpass.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Them exactly in a shorter period of time. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 57:11Speaker 1: I know he's obsessive, and I know we learned from
- 57:13Speaker 1: the best, but yeah, yeah, yeah, go hick in my head. Yeah,
- 57:18Speaker 1: but fire in his blood, fire in his heart, fire
- 57:21Speaker 1: in his head, No one and nothing would keep him
- 57:23Speaker 1: from yield. I love that.
- 57:25Speaker 2: It's good. And next chapter we will see him setting
- 57:30Speaker 2: the Shadow on all kinds of fire.
- 57:33Speaker 1: So much fun. It's just nice battle, nice little battle. Chapter.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Probably won't be the longest episode, because you know, battle
- 57:39Speaker 1: chapters don't necessarily have a lot of things for us
- 57:41Speaker 1: to say about them. But looking forward to the death
- 57:44Speaker 1: of the.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Shadow, I mean, this wasn't even the longest chapter of
- 58:29Speaker 3: the longest episode in the world.
- 58:30Speaker 1: No, definitely not. But over an hour. Is there anything? Uh,
- 58:33Speaker 1: let's see, did we miss anything we wanted to talk
- 58:35Speaker 1: about that we failed to talk about in the previous
- 58:37Speaker 1: episode that happened because a lot of things happened in
- 58:40Speaker 1: the last month, and I was wondering if anything you
- 58:42Speaker 1: thought of anything that you forgot to cover.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Oh you know what, I have. I have a little
- 58:47Speaker 2: bit more to tell you about Walt con Okay, yeah,
- 58:49Speaker 2: first of all, I got you some stuff at walt
- 58:52Speaker 2: Con that I need to give you when I see
- 58:54Speaker 2: you at your wedding. I have some walt Con stuff.
- 58:56Speaker 2: But also I wanted to specifically talk about the sing
- 59:01Speaker 2: along in the atrium that happened.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I saw a little video of that that
- 59:07Speaker 1: was really pretty.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Yeah. Talker Around Riod are first of all, just amazing,
- 59:12Speaker 2: wonderful people and they're very sweet. And I said in
- 59:16Speaker 2: the episode before I went to walt Com that we
- 59:19Speaker 2: were going to be doing what idol sing along specifically,
- 59:23Speaker 2: and that did in fact happen, and it was just
- 59:27Speaker 2: as spectacular as you would imagine. They had. What they
- 59:30Speaker 2: do is they basically hand out a QR code. There's
- 59:33Speaker 2: a piece of paper, several pieces of paper card stock
- 59:35Speaker 2: floating around with a QR code on it, and that
- 59:38Speaker 2: takes you to a spreadsheet of all the songs that
- 59:41Speaker 2: Joe is able to play on guitar. And they have
- 59:44Speaker 2: their little amp and a mic, and Jen has her kazoo,
- 59:48Speaker 2: and there's also like a drum box so that way
- 59:51Speaker 2: someone can do percussion, Like Omar did a lot of percussion.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Even if he's not part of Talk Around Riod, he
- 59:56Speaker 2: does a lot of the percussion during the thing, because
- 59:58Speaker 2: you know, and like DT was there doing percussion. It
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: was great. And yeah, so we're like singing all of
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: the songs, but some of them were the wat idol
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: lyrics instead, and those of us who had written the
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: parodies got to come up and like you know, lead
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: the group in the singing of the song, and so
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: I got to do and Dora an Idiot just did
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: her sublime song. Yeah, we just we did a lot
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: of them. And so there was the normal sing along
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: songs and then there was the why idle sing along songs,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: and it's just it's even more fun than all getting
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: to eat together in terms of being like a bonding
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: thing or we're just all enjoying this thing together. I mean,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: group singing is just so fun. It's just so great.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: And because of the way the hotels set up, none
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: of the patrons have an issue with the fact that
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: we are filling the whole space with all this drunk catterwauling,
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: you know, like we all it's it's just so many
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: people all together enjoying it and just having the best time.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: It's just really magical.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: That reminds me. I purchased an upgraded karaoke machine for
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: the wedding.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Oh, very fine.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: So the one, the one I had purchased before, it
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: was like one hundred and fifty bucks right with and
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: it had two mics and two mics and a speaker
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: for one hundred and fifty bucks. It the quality just
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: wasn't there. It was a lot of distorted, like you
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: could tell we were singing into it, but it was
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: it was pretty bad. And then it just died. It
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: was the I could tell something was like it just
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: it was stopped, it stopped charging. So I went, you
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: know what, I'm not going to buy another cheap in
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: quotes speaker system. So I spent about like three fifty
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: on a much nicer one. And that will be because
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, I'm going to spend
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: it on. It's for the wedding because we need to
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: have something with a microphone that we can make announcements with, Yeah,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: that we can that is understandable, right, and portable. So
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: this isn't this isn't battery powered. It does have to
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: be plugged in, but it is a much much nicer
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: karaoke with microphones that are understandable and a speaker. That's
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: a much better system, and so, yeah, there will be
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: a karaoke machine at the wedding, and there will be
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: a lot of wheel of time people there who will
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: be more than happy to sing some watt Idol songs,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I'm sure, and there'll be a group of people going, wait,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: what those aren't the lyrics, but I would be I
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: would love to have a little mini watt Idol karaoke
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: moment at the wedding. That would be a blast.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Oh, that would be really fun. Well, I will I'll
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: see if Jen's willing to share that spreadsheet with me.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll have to like get the songs on Spotify
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: so we can like play them.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Yeah. That was Yeah, And according according to some and
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Nasai and Chat, apparently some of the hotel staff joined
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: in with the singing we're just that in even though
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: with the lyrics they didn't know.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: Also, I mean there was a lot of songs that
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: we were doing just like the normal version.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Oh okay, it was.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: It was not entirely what Idle karaoke it was. It
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: was just Joe's range of songs. But some of them
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: the lyrics were us because Joe's cool and like learned
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: some of the songs for us.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: That's awesome. Yeah, and for the most part, they are
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: pop songs, right, Yeah.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: They're a very pomilar songs. Yeah, it's less relevant when
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: you parody a song nobody knows, right.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Win a lot, Yeah, not so much. But because I
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: had a couple there's a couple of ideas I had
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: that I threw out to you where I was like, oh,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I think this would be a great song. You're like,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: I've never heard of that song.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: I was like, fuck, okay, right, yeah, well I also
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: had heard don't I never know a lot of the songs.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: There's a lot of songs because I just my musical
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: tastes have have odd holes. But yeah, it's just it's
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: another one of those aspects about walt Con, which actually
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: they also did trivia, so I guess I was really
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: I was really appreciating the Talker round Red contributions to
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: wat Con this year. They really made a lot of
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: mi Con experience, specifically what it was. But it's just
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: a wonderful thing about walt Con. How much of the
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: whole thing is made by us, you know, like all
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: these different people each have the thing that they're bringing,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: you know, whether it's a card game, or trivia, or
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: all the panels we make, or people having very specific
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: like cosplay missions with other people. Like there's all these
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: little things that make the amalgamated experience.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: I like what CON framed as a creator's conference, but
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: like the tent for who's a creator is so big.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: It's like, if you create a costume, that's a creator.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: If you create cards, that's a creator. If you do
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: a podcast, if we do a YouTube channel, if you
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: do you know, if you've even just create artwork or
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: any of those things. It's like, I really do feel
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: like the CON. You know, I shouldn't say it's for
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: those people, but like those people are the people who
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: are creating the CON for themselves, and they like there's
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: other people are welcome there, but that's really the heart
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: of the CON is the content creators.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, And it is an extremely big ten and
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: I'm always you know, drawing more people in and getting
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: them to participate to a greater degree, and like we
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: all do our own little thing, and the ultimately.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: The audiobook narrators.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and then we end up with this like Gleam
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: and Cloak of awesomeness and like I haven't even watched
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: back all the panels, but like all the panels are
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: on that you know, you can watch the streams back
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: because we care about having a virtual option and also
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: to allow people to watch all the stuff that they missed,
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: and like there's just.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: So much and oh my god. The difference between wat
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Com panels and jordan Con panels like, to me, I
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: love the cont I love both cons right, like, but
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: where jordan Con fails to me is the panels. The
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: panels just they haven't figured out how to get charismatic
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: people up on stage. But because Watcon is by creators
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: for creators, you have a bunch of very charismatic creators
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: up on stage. We're very good at talking to a
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: group of people and being entertaining while doing it. And
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I think the panels are just so good at.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Waltcan Yeah, and it's it's they keep innovating too, like
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: they had this year. I think they did this last
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: year too, but they did wat ones where they have
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: like people like eating you know, hot sauce stuff, and
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: you've got TV speculation and all these different things and
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: very different people organizing them. So everything's got its own
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: flavors and and and yeah, we're really all working together
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: to make this like wild circus roll down the road.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: There's too much to all appreciate at once, but like
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: the collective experience is just like wow, we are really
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: spoiled for choice when it comes to how we wants
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: to hang out together and how we want to spend
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: this time. And it's really special to be part of
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: making it happen. Yeah, and Guy Roberts, I guess was
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: involved in eating the hot Wings.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Oh good, good, good good. Yeah.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Yeah, so congratulations if you were watching that, you got
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: to watch you know, one of the actors from the
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: show suffering hot sauce that was created by the Black Tower.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Guys have the whole like hot sauce thing, like on
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Lock with the taint ye like taint sauce is a
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: whole thing, And it's uh yeah, whole swass of the
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: con that I didn't I just hear about third hand,
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: but I know that it happened in the same building
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: I was in while I was off, you know, complementing
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: London River on her first to ever foam like costume thing.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: She did this amazing Dane bornhol outfit like from the show,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: and I was like, it's so many people were complimenting
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: her on it, and she's like, oh, yeah, it's my
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: first time ever working with this foam stuff. We're all
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: just like, what, like this is perfect, but apparently making
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: foam stuff is really difficult. I don't know, because I'm
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: not that kind of ambitious, but she nailed.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: It, of course. Of course.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I also there, Literally I did the postcon survey today,
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: So everyone, if you haven't filled that out, go fill
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: that out. But probably it'll be dead by the time
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: that I this episode is published, but they're literally nameless.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Is literally garnering gauging interest for doing a walk cruise.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: He's he's literally taking this joke bit seriously enough to
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: like gauge interest in doing a walk cruise. Well, that's
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: the last question on the survey.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Like a cruise, like people from walk getting together and
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: going on a cruise together. Okay, ye yeah, no.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's literally how serious this bit has become.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Is it's the last question on the post walkcon survey.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: I mean, watcan started out as a bit of a joke,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: so that I don't be scared when nabe list starts
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: joking about things because he just does them sometimes, truly,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: he does it really does. He just makes them happen.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: And so I don't take anything he says as a joke.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Because he's such a troll, but you never know when
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: he might actually just like follow through to the most
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: absurd degree.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: That's why we're editing tarvallin after Dark is right, because
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: like it was almost a joke, but I was like, oh,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: he's like, I don't want to do this anymore. I
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: was like, huh, I could do it, and he was like, yeah,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: you want to and I was like yeah, and then
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: he just made it happen. So yeah, to be careful
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: if you when you joke around about him, because if you, uh,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: he'll take you seriously.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and he is a total troll. But also like,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: under it all, it seems like a pretty decent guy
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: because Con keeps getting better and it's really cool despite
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: the fact that this guy who is just a total
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: troll is on top.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: He's drunk on power. He's drunk on power. That's That's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: what I'm going with. He's just something like that, something
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: like it's something like that. I don't know, man, he
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: at least he's on our team exactly right. He's it's
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: a very matt like figure, right, how does he keep
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: getting lucky at he's good, but he's also very lucky,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, all right, Well I don't have anything else.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: I got myself a new phone. I upgraded my phone
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: for the first time in a long time. I'm very
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: happy about that. It's either been hand me downs or
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: the cheapest of the cheap phone I could buy for
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: a long time. And I finally said, you know what,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: I'm going to invest in a new phone. Very exciting
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: for me. Nobody else cares.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: I'm really hoping to upgrade my phone soon, but it's
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: so much work. But it's also so overdue, so I
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: might be joining you in the new phone club shortly.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: I get the wedding was the excuse. So I was
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: able to be like, well, you know, I want an
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: upgraded camera if I want to take any pictures, and
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: so you know, you're able to make that excuse to
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: yourself and tell yourself that's why I'm getting it, not
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: because I mean, my old one was pretty badly cracked
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: in the back and the battery life was pretty much nonexistent,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: and it was five six years old.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: So yeah, you're allowed to upgrade your phone every now
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: and then.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, every now and then it's it's time, so gosh.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Other than that, no, nothing really. If I say wedding
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: one more time, I think you'll just cut off the
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: recording right here.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: So yeah, I have to figure out what I'm going
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: to release on the feed for the month of not
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: having episodes. I'm thinking I might just do all the tangents.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: It might just release like episodes that are just the
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: tangents between books. That might be kind of fun, kind
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: of a random sub set to collect together.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: No, that would work. I don't know. We took the
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: whole month off.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, we're gonna take we take a month off.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I don't know if I want to take the.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Whole You said you wanted to take a whole month off.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: I know, But now that we're getting close to it,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: I'm like, man, this is this is I need my therapy,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I mean, my weekly recordings. I don't know what I'm
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: going to do about it, Like, uh, well, yeah, so
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: we'll see, we'll see. I still I might beg you
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: to record sometimes I'd be like, come on, can we record.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: It's still like three weeks away, come on, let's record.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Never would you get up? We need to do stuff.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: I want to record.
