- 1:40hip hop dot Com, DJ booth dot net, and a couple of places
- 1:45where I'm getting some of these stories from. Let's get right into the business.
- 1:49Though. Recently it was announced that Pete Rock and Common we'll be working
- 1:59on album together that's nineties inspired, and Pete Rock says it will bring excitement
- 2:08back to hip hop. I'm gonna hold my thoughts for afterwards, but no
- 2:15shade. I'm excited, but let's get a little bit more into it.
- 2:21This is on hip hop dx dot com on Wednesday, sets him a thirteenth.
- 2:23The legendary producers shared hip Hop Dx story about his upcoming project with the
- 2:30Chicago MC to emphasize how special he thinks it's going to be ours. You
- 2:37ever missed that feeling of a good release in hip hop? Remember how exciting
- 2:42that felt? We both we both excited. As a mug. I always
- 2:47feel like I got something to prove. But it's just fun to make music,
- 2:52competing to make music, good music with all different personalities involved. Today
- 2:57just got gotten dry. We love him pop and you know and you will
- 3:01know how much. Stay tuned if you love hip hop. I messed that
- 3:07all up, my bad. Just a couple of things I want to say
- 3:14before you know again, no shade, but they have to be acknowledged.
- 3:20Pete Rocket, sky Zoo kind of already did this with Retropolitan. They may
- 3:25not have said nineties, but it had a very New York nineties feel to
- 3:34it as far as production and artwork and marketing, and it was very very
- 3:42dope. So you should check it out. So I'm extremely excited to see
- 3:46Common working with Pete Rock on something like this because there's no way it could
- 3:53be whacked. To be honest, there's no way it could be whacked.
- 3:55Pete gonna come with the beats. Common is gonna be reinspired comments from the
- 4:00nineties if you don't know. But I have a little bit of an issue
- 4:06with almost phrasing hip hop as not being competitive or not really having exciting releases.
- 4:17That is not true. It's just not for a number of reasons.
- 4:24Right. Ransom is killing it. If you never heard of Ransom the Brother,
- 4:30he hasn't put out a dug in like three years, just EP's album,
- 4:34EP's album, just Dope, Bars Beats Everything. Then there's a whole
- 4:41bunch of other people, including sky Zoo, who have released dope hip hop
- 4:45that people were excited to check out let alone, somebody we're going to talk
- 4:49about a little later who released six projects in three years. I believe it's
- 4:56three years, and the excite eatement around every release is crazy. Now,
- 5:03maybe Pete is not personally excited for a lot of these projects I'm talking about,
- 5:10but he does have a point, So I would just say he's now
- 5:15jumping into the fray of the excitement He's They're not him and Common are not
- 5:18causing the excitement. They're jumping into the excitement that already exists. I am
- 5:26extremely excited for this because Pete Rock is still make dope beats, and I
- 5:31just hate the fact that he doesn't get utilized. But some of the bigger
- 5:35names, you know, it's dope that people go and work with Premier as
- 5:42a video and Premier is in a video and all of that. And I'm
- 5:46not saying that that doesn't exist for Pete Rock, but not in the same
- 5:49way, you know, not the same type of exposure. And we talk
- 5:53about Pete Rock, so Common has a nice profile because of his acting and
- 6:00his awards and his music. So I'm curious to see, you know,
- 6:05because there's probably different Common fans. I'm saying it probably is some people who
- 6:11never heard One day it will all make sense. It didn't know his name
- 6:15was common Sense before it was common Sometimes the fan base is like that.
- 6:19But I'm just hoping they embrace what these brothers are gonna do because I am
- 6:25excited. You know, I'm not gonna lie, but just be clear.
- 6:30You know there's already excitement happening over projects. You just have. You guys
- 6:32have to join, that's all. And the more the merrier, who get
- 6:39your act together. We need a new album. We need something that just
- 6:45brings back the feeling because the show. I'm ranting, but the show brought
- 6:51back the feeling and the fact that they didn't capitalize off even solo careers.
- 6:57They didn't capitalize off of it or Liquid Sol two or Supreme Clientele too,
- 7:02or Cuban Link three or Into the Wood two, you know whatever. You
- 7:10know what I'm saying. Whatever, so everybody capitalize off of it. Plus
- 7:15Havoc said there was gonna be a new Mob Deep album, So hey,
- 7:18talk about excitement, all right? Moving along BG's home. If you didn't
- 7:27know Bg of Cash Money Records, you know what I'm saying, Like the
- 7:31Hot Boys, Cash Money is on me like I'm come on now, you
- 7:38know, I'm acting like, oh hey, come on now, you know.
- 7:42But it's dope that he's home. I love when uh, you know,
- 7:48I would prefer brother never got locked up, but nevertheless, it happened
- 7:53and he's home. I do like the fact, as MC myself, that
- 8:00dudes like that, when they get in these types of situations, they just
- 8:03write all kinds of songs, all kinds of thoughts. Probably unfortunately, because
- 8:11they've been sat down now they could focus and be creative and do all the
- 8:18things that maybe they didn't really cherish as much because they had all these distractions
- 8:24which eventually led them to imprisonment. But sometimes when you're in prison and you're
- 8:28a writer like that or creative, you have the time with your own thoughts
- 8:33to create. So we've seen all other couple casts like Tupac and all of
- 8:39that. So it's dope that he's home. And I saw a video when
- 8:46he came home and baby was there, and yeah, but nevertheless, Birdman
- 8:52is teasing a cash money reunion tour, and I remember I think Wayne said
- 9:01this a while back that he wanted to wait till, you know, everybody
- 9:05could be together but now Julie has been around. You saw him on Tiny
- 9:11Deaths. Little Wayne is ramping up, he on a new NAS Album's kind
- 9:15of crazy. I'm just letting y'all know. Turt been home, right,
- 9:22So everybody man like, they all around, They all around, So it
- 9:26would be dope if they did a tour. It would be dope if somehow
- 9:31they could just grab the tail end of a man. I gotta say,
- 9:35pauls ya know what I meant. But the end of the year, just
- 9:41like try to get something together. And now I don't know what state BG
- 9:43is in to perform, let alone record. But nevertheless, the nostalgia of
- 9:54a Cash Money tour would be crazy, right. It would be crazy because
- 10:00that was a big moment in hip hop for New Orleans, for the South.
- 10:05It to this day, some of those influences are still around, so
- 10:11it might be kind of crazy. And Birdman says he's already putting up one
- 10:16hundred million. Of course he said that. But what do you think you
- 10:22know? Are you a fan of Cash Money records back in the day?
- 10:26Bla blame juvenile BG, turk low easy, you know what I'm saying?
- 10:31What was this joint? The block is hot and all that and fireman or
- 10:35whatever. I ain't like that one, I'm sorry, but it would be
- 10:41interesting to see and just dope that they're all hair, you know, and
- 10:46and out and alive and hopefully healthy healthy, and I don't know. I'm
- 10:54about to go listen to my best to cash money now because I'm I'm not
- 10:58gonna lie. I'm kind of hyped on a low. You know, it's
- 11:00dope. It was. It was something that kind of ended and everybody went
- 11:05they separate ways and had their own hits and stuff like that. But I
- 11:09just like bringing a band back together, you know. That's what's dope about
- 11:13it. So whatever you may think about that or the first story, leave
- 11:18your comments and content section. Although, and lastly, so I didn't want
- 11:24to spend a lot of time this week just like ranting and talking and blah
- 11:28blah blah unless it called for it, right, That's what the podcast is
- 11:31about. So this is going to be a shorter version of what I typically
- 11:35do. But recently we found out that NAS and hit Boy had another project
- 11:45coming and it was like the final project as far as their collaborations. Because
- 11:50what NAS had been teasing or mentioning before about being in this creative space.
- 11:56He was talking about another project that did not include hit Boy as a soul
- 12:01producer, but like always, put up a teaser on his ig it said
- 12:09the finale, NAS fans started getting hyped. Then it was like Magic three
- 12:16is on the way. Magic two dropped in July. I did a review
- 12:20of it. It was cool. It was it was decent. Not one
- 12:26of my top five of the year, for sure, but it was cool.
- 12:31And so when I'm like, oh, Magic three, wait, damn
- 12:35already now, Just so you know, NASA hip Boy have done six have
- 12:41released six projects and basically three years. I think they started in twenty twenty
- 12:46with The King's Disease series and eventually we also got this Magic series, which
- 12:52is a trilogy of two trilogies. And I'm trying not to get hype,
- 12:58but two trilogies in three years, which is crazy. And it's one thing
- 13:03to have six albums and most of them are garbage except for two. It's
- 13:09another thing to not have one whack project good. It's fine. There's nothing
- 13:18wrong with being good. There's nothing wrong with being decent. Kids call it
- 13:24mid doesn't mean it to me. It doesn't mean it's the worst. It's
- 13:30just yeah, not quite like the first Magic. So eventually the cover was
- 13:37released and then the track listing and it's like, oh, there's only one
- 13:39feature, Little Wayne's on there, but there's fifteen songs. So finally,
- 13:48on NAS's birthday September fourteen, they released the finale, Magic three, the
- 13:54finale of six albums with hit Boy that has been un presidented not only because
- 14:03of the output in the short span of time, but the quality and the
- 14:09fact that this is a legendary rapper with a young producer and they're making magic.
- 14:16I'm sorry I didn't I had to just we know it's called magic.
- 14:20I'm just saying, but it's just incredible because it's never been done before in
- 14:28hip hop. No one in hip hop, including the goat L L cou
- 14:33J, has done this now, this late in the game, that kind
- 14:41of output. Say what you want about a song too here and then the
- 14:46majority, the overwhelming majority of it is hot. Nas is the worst beat
- 14:52picker just died. Because if you put out six joints in the majority that
- 14:56beats his fire, it just makes up for whatever was whacking the past as
- 15:01far as beach, because there were some don't try to act like it wasn't.
- 15:05But again, this song, I mean, this album has fifteen tracks,
- 15:09comes in at forty five minutes in length, which is great for me
- 15:13because I like, you know, vibe listening. If I really like it,
- 15:18I'll play it back now. Y'all know how I do when it comes
- 15:20to my reviews or my thoughts. I like to listen at least three times,
- 15:24not fast or back to back and back. But unless it's so dope
- 15:30I listened to it three times in a row, then that's crazy. You
- 15:33might have a classical hand, but it's a good way for me to get
- 15:37my you know, get the initial impressions in the first listen, kind of
- 15:41listen a little deep on the second listen by the third list and I kind
- 15:45of know how I feel. And I'm just gonna stop because I know some
- 15:48people want to just know how I feel. I don't feel that Magic three
- 15:56wouldn't enter my top five of the year. Obviously, over the course of
- 16:00the rest of the year, I'm going to continue to listen to a couple
- 16:03of joints and maybe maybe it ekes in, but it initially no, it's
- 16:10not a name, is it? The worst of the Magic series, not
- 16:15at all. I think it's debatable whether it's the best because the first Magic
- 16:22was so dope because it was a surprise release, and then those first couple
- 16:27of songs like Joe Black and all of that, and Speechless was like yo.
- 16:33Then it had young Nas on the cover. It felt like he just
- 16:36went back at the time, and so there was a lot of energy behind
- 16:40that one. But when you go back and listen, some of that is
- 16:42still there. I just don't I feel like Magic three is. It's really
- 16:52a very reflective project, like Nas in this whole run has reflected over his
- 16:59career, people we met in the industry and all that good stuff. But
- 17:03because he's turned fifty and a lot of those thoughts of being fifty years old
- 17:11and where you are in your life with your relationships and your music and your
- 17:15business, it just feels like a king on his throne. You know.
- 17:22I know that sounds cliche to say, but it does lyrically. And I'm
- 17:27not gonna lie. When I first hit play the first two records, I
- 17:33was like, I don't know, and my gripe is not the music or
- 17:37what he has to say. It's just I'm not the biggest fan of the
- 17:42New Nah's flow because I feel like it doesn't match every beat. Sometimes it's
- 17:48just happening and the beat is just happening, and it's not a synergy between
- 17:55the two. And that's what I liked about a lot of the songs that
- 17:57were really dope like it. They fit Notiz, but his lyrics are really
- 18:07good. And I'm not talking on like, I'm not talking about all that
- 18:11space, you know, like you know i'll put the coke in the I'm
- 18:14not talking about that. I'm talking about just a man, a grown man,
- 18:18talking to a beat. And maybe it's because you know, I'm closer
- 18:26to his age and I can relate a lot to where he is in his
- 18:30career, and maybe that's why it. The lyrics hit me in a different
- 18:33way than it may hit someone else who's in a whole nother space. But
- 18:41on a second listen, those songs didn't bother me as much. And I
- 18:45think it was because I think the middle it was a little sketchy, but
- 18:51the middle to the end are really strong, and it kind of makes up.
- 18:57So when you come back and listen to that track again, now you
- 19:02get the project. You get Okay, I get it, you know,
- 19:08what I'm saying. I see where you are, nas, I see what
- 19:11this was all about. I like it, so I feel like it's better
- 19:15than Kings Magic two. It is by long shot. Magic two felt like
- 19:23Lost Tapes. Three. This feels like an album, right, It just
- 19:29feels like King's Disease four If you ask me, it really does. So
- 19:33there you have it. I think it's I think it's a good album.
- 19:36I think it's one of the best of the year. Is it in my
- 19:38top five? I don't know. Man, my top five running real strong
- 19:41and I don't know, but we'll see by the end of the year.
- 19:45What do you think about the news uh nas project? If you subscribe to
