- 1:55Speaker 1: to a lot of stuff in one week. That's right.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Are you ready for a synopsis? I Am oay to
- 2:00Speaker 1: the world. When a burst waterline forces a temple to
- 2:04Speaker 1: seek shelter, a neighboring church opens its doors, leading to
- 2:08Speaker 1: a rare holiday overlap where Hanakah's final night and Christmas
- 2:11Speaker 1: Eve fall on the same day. Old high school rivals
- 2:14Speaker 1: Nicki and Jake are pushed into working together on a
- 2:17Speaker 1: joint use music program, discovering that collaboration, not competition, maybe
- 2:21Speaker 1: the real miracle of the season. Paula L. Directed Oi
- 2:25Speaker 1: to the World with twenty two directing credits. Paula also
- 2:28Speaker 1: directed in Mary Measure, Magic and Mistletoe and The Christmas
- 2:31Speaker 1: Contest for Hallmark. That's a name that I'm not familiar with,
- 2:35Speaker 1: No me either, but we are familiar with those movies.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So the Christmas Contest, I'm oh, I am John Brotherton
- 2:42Speaker 1: and CCB. Yeah. Rick Garman read the script for OI
- 2:45Speaker 1: to the World. You'll recognize Rick from all of the
- 2:47Speaker 1: Cherry Lane movies, two of the Groomsmen movies, and many
- 2:51Speaker 1: others including You Had Me at Aloha and ground Swell.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Brook Dorsai plays Nicki. This is Brooks fifty seventh acting
- 2:57Speaker 1: credit and her first appearance on Hallmark this year. In
- 3:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, she was in three movies for the network,
- 3:03Speaker 1: Duck the Halls on Cherry Lane, Following Yonder Star and
- 3:06Speaker 1: Crimes of Fashion Killer Clutch. You know, if you haven't
- 3:08Speaker 1: watched Following Yonder Star, Jeff Beasley movie Real Good, Little
- 3:13Speaker 1: Heartstring Tugger so good. We didn't review it. We did not.
- 3:17Speaker 1: There's always like one that like, we don't review and
- 3:20Speaker 1: it ends up being really good. Jake Epstein plays Jake
- 3:23Speaker 1: with sixty nine acting credits. Jake has been in just
- 3:26Speaker 1: about everything everywhere. Recently, he was in three of the
- 3:30Speaker 1: Unwrapping Christmas movies, four Hearts Around the Table movies, four
- 3:34Speaker 1: episodes of Mistletoe Murders, and also appeared in a episode
- 3:38Speaker 1: of Ripple on Netflix, which we are also reviewing here.
- 3:41Speaker 1: On Girls Gone Homework, Curtis Level plays Dave. This is
- 3:45Speaker 1: Curtis's tenth acting project, and he previously appeared in Checking
- 3:48Speaker 1: It twice in twenty twenty three. Stelena Russach plays Elaine.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Among her forty one acting credits include the homework projects
- 3:54Speaker 1: Junebug and Notes of Autumn. David Julian Hirsch plays Rabbi
- 3:58Speaker 1: Levi Collin. This appears to be David's first Hallmark movie
- 4:02Speaker 1: among his forty six acting credits. His other recent credits
- 4:05Speaker 1: include Fallen Angels, Murder Club, Heroes and Felons, and the
- 4:09Speaker 1: series Jupiter's Legacy. Harrison co plays Paul Roberts. This appears
- 4:14Speaker 1: to be Harrison's first Hallmark project. Among his forty two
- 4:17Speaker 1: acting credits, he recently appeared in the movie's Girl Taken
- 4:20Speaker 1: and Mormon Mom Gone Wrong. The Ruby Frankie Story. Shay
- 4:24Speaker 1: Quann plays Cynthia Nicky's mom. This is Shay's sixth acting
- 4:28Speaker 1: project and her first Hallmark movie. Young Nicky is played
- 4:31Speaker 1: by Juliette Hawk and Young Jake is played by Axel
- 4:34Speaker 1: Mars Django Hansen. We're gonna take a quick break and
- 4:38Speaker 1: come right back with our first impression of OI to
- 4:40Speaker 1: the world. Hey, Wendy, what was your first impression of
- 4:51Speaker 1: OI to the world? Nobody wants this, do you get it?
- 5:00Speaker 1: My first impression is put on your box and gloves.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Potentially controversial take. I love the title of this movie
- 5:05Speaker 1: and how it ties into the story, Low Hanging Fruit.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Let's talk what we liked. Can I go first? Sure?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Jake is doing the most in a good way. Jake
- 5:19Speaker 1: Epstein is easily my anchor in this movie. He's real, funny,
- 5:25Speaker 1: very I think he's so good at delivery and timing,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and he brings an ease to the character and the
- 5:31Speaker 1: situations that the character is in. I enjoyed watching him
- 5:35Speaker 1: every scene he's in. I'm all in on it. Jake
- 5:39Speaker 1: Epstein is not like a Hallmark actor where I'm like, oh, whoa,
- 5:44Speaker 1: he's amazing, but he always delivers comedy for me. And
- 5:49Speaker 1: this year's turn in Mistletoe Murders is what swayed me
- 5:54Speaker 1: the most. I enjoy what he brings to characters. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I liked Jake to you know, I ride hard for
- 6:01Speaker 1: my girl, Brooked Orsay. I'm a huge fan of hers.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I always have been. If you haven't watched Royal Pains,
- 6:06Speaker 1: she's great in that. I really like her in this role.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I think she typically takes softer roles, roles that are
- 6:13Speaker 1: in She doesn't typically take a ton of comedic roles
- 6:17Speaker 1: on Hallmark. I really enjoyed bantery Brook Dorsay. She delivers
- 6:22Speaker 1: some comedic lines with a throwaway quality that I really enjoyed.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I felt like her tone was very different from what
- 6:29Speaker 1: we're used to seeing from her. She's usually little miss Sunshine,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and she has a little bit of an edge to
- 6:35Speaker 1: her in this movie, and I liked seeing that. I
- 6:40Speaker 1: agree with you there that this was a different kind
- 6:43Speaker 1: of character for her. I like her too. I like
- 6:45Speaker 1: her a lot. I mean, she's in that movie like
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yonder Star. She's great in that movie. She does appear
- 6:52Speaker 1: in My Wishes, though not as Brooke, but her character
- 6:54Speaker 1: appears in My Wishes. Okay. I thought Brooke and Jake
- 6:58Speaker 1: had a lot of fun with this movie. This movie
- 7:00Speaker 1: is not going to make any top five lists from
- 7:01Speaker 1: the season. I'm aware of that. I did find it
- 7:04Speaker 1: watchable and enjoyable, and knew what the movie is called.
- 7:08Speaker 1: OI to the World. I was expecting silliness. I was
- 7:10Speaker 1: expecting a little choir hyjinks. I was expecting children. I
- 7:16Speaker 1: know that these are things that turn you off me, yes,
- 7:20Speaker 1: but I thought I thought they had a good time.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Now I do have a healthy number of wishes, but
- 7:27Speaker 1: I thought this movie was fun. I think you came
- 7:31Speaker 1: into this movie because you're you're you live in this world,
- 7:35Speaker 1: the holiday world, the choir world. Oh you know that's funny,
- 7:39Speaker 1: because that stuff was like the least interesting to me.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I live in like a musical theater world, a performing world,
- 7:47Speaker 1: not for me myself, because of my kid like I
- 7:50Speaker 1: did find it completely unbelievable that a choir director would
- 7:52Speaker 1: never saying that's that's never going to happen. But I
- 7:54Speaker 1: thought they brought the fun. I thought they clearly had
- 7:58Speaker 1: like an enemy still lovers thing going on here, and
- 8:00Speaker 1: it didn't bother me. But I didn't fully necessarily buy
- 8:04Speaker 1: into the basis of their disagreement. Just like oh, he
- 8:07Speaker 1: turns everything into a competition. Okay, whatever things happen, people
- 8:12Speaker 1: grow apart. Sometimes you're like, I don't like that person
- 8:14Speaker 1: and I can't even remember why, right, Yeah, but I
- 8:18Speaker 1: enjoyed the push and pull they had with each other. Yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 1: would you hang on to this moment in time that happened?
- 8:24Speaker 1: As I don't even were they like young high schoolers?
- 8:28Speaker 1: Prop maybe I'm a petty bee. Sometimes I didn't hate
- 8:34Speaker 1: the childhood rivalry part of this movie. As I sit
- 8:39Speaker 1: here and question like, would you hang on to this?
- 8:41Speaker 1: I probably would. I am fifty years old and I
- 8:44Speaker 1: do have nightmares about middle school. Sure sometimes so, Yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 1: but you know their history isn't rooted in cruelty, like right,
- 8:53Speaker 1: it wasn't. He wasn't her childhood bully. Yeah, exactly, Like
- 8:58Speaker 1: remember holidays last year. We were supposed to forgive those
- 9:01Speaker 1: two girls who were like so mean to each other.
- 9:04Speaker 1: That's not the case here, Like we have like two
- 9:07Speaker 1: competitive students, So watching them as adults like kind of
- 9:13Speaker 1: move away from that. Yeah, it made sense to me.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I you know, it didn't totally like Land Like I
- 9:21Speaker 1: didn't love. I didn't love like when they meet each
- 9:23Speaker 1: other in the bakery, and he's like, I'm here to
- 9:25Speaker 1: get the last like lady fingers, and then like orders.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I mean yeah, I was like, come on, yeah, I
- 9:31Speaker 1: didn't love that either. I mean I didn't love that
- 9:33Speaker 1: one thing I really liked. I actually did enjoy their
- 9:36Speaker 1: original song at the end of this movie too. I
- 9:39Speaker 1: thought it was cute. I thought it was cute. It
- 9:41Speaker 1: did make me pause for a second, though. We did
- 9:44Speaker 1: talk about the Snow Must go On and how the
- 9:47Speaker 1: actor took the lead role in that production. Oh yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and the teachers take over. They take the lead role
- 9:54Speaker 1: in this production too. I'm like, yeah, you are absolutely right.
- 9:59Speaker 1: That's a good point because the story here is about
- 10:03Speaker 1: Nikki being able to perform. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But I did enjoy their song. I thought it was
- 10:11Speaker 1: really cute, and they got like the parishioners, is that
- 10:14Speaker 1: what you call them, I'm not very religious guys, Then
- 10:17Speaker 1: probably that's not what you call the people that were
- 10:18Speaker 1: the people in the crowd. Yeah. I think that's what
- 10:20Speaker 1: you call church people because it's a parish. But that's
- 10:23Speaker 1: not what you would call they were at the church. Yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 1: but some of them were at a Jewish service, correct,
- 10:29Speaker 1: So some of them are parishioners, and I don't know
- 10:31Speaker 1: what you call people who are attending a Jewish service.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I don't either, but synagoguians. My point is everybody was
- 10:38Speaker 1: into it. They yn't like, yeah, I didn't. I'm surprised
- 10:40Speaker 1: they didn't throw up their hands to the sky and
- 10:42Speaker 1: like wave their flashlights. But it was it was cute.
- 10:46Speaker 1: It was cute. I think so too. Look. I talked
- 10:49Speaker 1: about the title of this movie. She and Jake are
- 10:51Speaker 1: trying to find a way to marry their two traditions together.
- 10:55Speaker 1: How can we do a performance that honors of both?
- 10:57Speaker 1: And then someone says joy to the World, and I
- 10:59Speaker 1: then my was like OI to the World. And they
- 11:01Speaker 1: said it look sometimes stupid humor like that lands for me,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and I enjoyed it. I'm not gonna lie. I was
- 11:08Speaker 1: just perhaps in the right mood for it. But I
- 11:10Speaker 1: believe there is a song called OI to the World. Okay,
- 11:13Speaker 1: so it's not completely original. We're talking about Hallmark. Originality
- 11:18Speaker 1: is not always the goal here. Actually, let me it
- 11:22Speaker 1: is Oi. Oh. I to the World is a punk
- 11:25Speaker 1: rock Christmas album by the Vandals, So I think the
- 11:29Speaker 1: OI has different origins here. I don't think there's anything
- 11:33Speaker 1: original about it. I'm sure it's been used in Chrismaca
- 11:36Speaker 1: celebrations in the past. My final like about this movie
- 11:41Speaker 1: is there were some very humorous lines. I think they're
- 11:44Speaker 1: talking about the choir rooms and Jake goes their hoovil
- 11:46Speaker 1: after the Grinch stole Christmas? Really funny. Nicki says, why
- 11:50Speaker 1: does your mom invite me to Hanakah dinner? And he says,
- 11:52Speaker 1: she wants you to try on her wedding dress to
- 11:53Speaker 1: see if it fits. Yes, throws the line away an
- 11:55Speaker 1: me so great. She gets embarrassed at one point and
- 11:58Speaker 1: she goes, I'm gonna go drink some points and walks off.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I laughed out loud. They bring the comedy in this. Yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 1: there was a lot of comedy. I mean, this was
- 12:06Speaker 1: a silly, ridiculous movie and it bade me laugh. Let
- 12:10Speaker 1: us talk about some wishes, Yes, can we? I'm gonna
- 12:14Speaker 1: just This is where my first impression comes in. We
- 12:17Speaker 1: live in a world where a show called Nobody Wants
- 12:21Speaker 1: This exists. It's a show on Netflix. It's two seasons,
- 12:25Speaker 1: spending Golden Globe Immy nominated. It is about a Jewish
- 12:30Speaker 1: rabbi and a non practicing woman. The ten. Have you
- 12:36Speaker 1: watched this show? Of course I have. What I'm talking
- 12:40Speaker 1: about here is the biggest tension in that show is
- 12:44Speaker 1: we have a man of faith and a woman who
- 12:47Speaker 1: is not, and will these two be together? Can they
- 12:49Speaker 1: be together? Can they be accepted together? This movie oi
- 12:53Speaker 1: to the world, same concept, no strife, no tension about anything.
- 12:57Speaker 1: The parents are trying to marry them off. Yes, yes, yes,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I hear that. You think there should have been some
- 13:05Speaker 1: a little friction. Yeah, Now, just to push back for
- 13:09Speaker 1: the sake of conversation, I agree with you, there should
- 13:11Speaker 1: have been some friction. I had a Jewish roommate in
- 13:14Speaker 1: college and she had a Catholic boyfriend, and her parents
- 13:17Speaker 1: were very much not cool with that. You know, and
- 13:21Speaker 1: nobody wants is he's a rabbi, has some like bigger
- 13:23Speaker 1: pressures on him than maybe your average Jewish person. Although
- 13:26Speaker 1: fair it does have a rabbi for a father. Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 1: perhaps there should have been some friction. The mom does
- 13:32Speaker 1: say like, eh, we'll have the kids bought mitzud, and
- 13:34Speaker 1: the other moms like, eh, we'll talk about it like
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's it's Hallmark. But yeah, but remember they did this
- 13:40Speaker 1: really well last year Christmas with the scenes where you
- 13:45Speaker 1: walked away from it going like this is so triggering.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I was so traumatized. Yeah, because of blending of families
- 13:51Speaker 1: and traditions and this and that they it could have
- 13:55Speaker 1: existed in this You are correct, well, if I may
- 13:59Speaker 1: taken a little help, I'm a friend. For my wish section,
- 14:02Speaker 1: we received an email from Jen with some really wonderful
- 14:07Speaker 1: thoughts about this movie, and she has a perspective that
- 14:10Speaker 1: I do not, and so I am going to share
- 14:12Speaker 1: her wishes from her perspective. She starts by saying, first off,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I liked a movie. I thought the leads were good
- 14:17Speaker 1: and there were funny moments. It explored good topics like
- 14:20Speaker 1: how long it can take to get your career started,
- 14:23Speaker 1: childhood trauma affecting us as adults. It had some more
- 14:26Speaker 1: clever camera work and editing them many Hamewark movies. The
- 14:29Speaker 1: kids were used in the correct amount, and it was
- 14:31Speaker 1: not anti semitic. Ooh, talk about the camera work. I
- 14:34Speaker 1: forgot to mention that my likes when they're panning back
- 14:36Speaker 1: and forth in that chaotic scene where Nicky and Jake
- 14:39Speaker 1: are trying to out sing each other and it's just
- 14:40Speaker 1: like whoshes. It's fun. She says all of that to
- 14:44Speaker 1: go in with Here are some thoughts. Is this a
- 14:48Speaker 1: honka movie? Is the question, she asks, And here are
- 14:51Speaker 1: her bullet points. For instance, I'm not sure if never
- 14:54Speaker 1: been Chris or Leah's Perfect Gift. Two movies whose plots
- 14:56Speaker 1: I don't like those are her words, had that many
- 14:59Speaker 1: fewer hanakah specific scenes. This Hanukka movie had only one
- 15:03Speaker 1: candle lighting the first night when it's a movie leading
- 15:06Speaker 1: up to the last night, where the manora is quickly
- 15:08Speaker 1: shown at that candlelighting. The full prayer is not heard
- 15:12Speaker 1: until the last combo song. I don't think any hanka
- 15:15Speaker 1: songs are sung besides a few bars of Dradle Dradl Dradel,
- 15:18Speaker 1: which that scene was actually quite funny when he realizes
- 15:22Speaker 1: that the song he's writing, well, what was it? Ambrosia?
- 15:27Speaker 1: Something about ambrosia, Yeah, ambro I can't remember what it was.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I thought it was funny, though it was funny. Speaking
- 15:32Speaker 1: of which, Dradel's are shown as decoration in the music room,
- 15:35Speaker 1: but never played with the kids. Would so play with them.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I also don't love the idea of giving into having
- 15:42Speaker 1: a hanaka bush or decorating for Hankah in basically the
- 15:45Speaker 1: same way as for Christmas, but blue. But I know
- 15:47Speaker 1: some Jews do soufganiat, which are donuts are mentioned but
- 15:51Speaker 1: never eaten, powdered sugar and jam on the nose could
- 15:53Speaker 1: be very cute lot because are barely seen when they
- 15:58Speaker 1: decide to do fundraisers for the synagogue. There's no effort
- 16:00Speaker 1: to turn any of the events into a Hankah event,
- 16:02Speaker 1: such as a Dragle competition. I don't recall seeing any
- 16:05Speaker 1: Hanuka decorations at the piano bar which they go to
- 16:08Speaker 1: on I think the second night of Hanukkah just Christmas
- 16:10Speaker 1: lights most important for Hallmark. The kids at the end
- 16:13Speaker 1: of the movie does not take place in front of
- 16:15Speaker 1: any symbols of Hanagah, but outside a church decorated for
- 16:18Speaker 1: Christmas on the outside, even though they are hosting a synagogue.
- 16:22Speaker 1: These are all good points, ballid points. In fact, one
- 16:26Speaker 1: of my wishes is stop treating Jewish representation like a
- 16:29Speaker 1: side quest. I personally feel we get one movie a
- 16:33Speaker 1: year during countdown on Christmas that centers on the Jewish faith,
- 16:37Speaker 1: and this year we get it blended with Christmas, albeit
- 16:40Speaker 1: like it's I like the story, but I feel it
- 16:45Speaker 1: might be frustrated and maybe a little disrespectful to viewers
- 16:49Speaker 1: who sit through twenty six other Christmas movies. Yeah, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: this is their faith and they want to see themselves
- 16:56Speaker 1: or their faith, or their culture or their traditions represented
- 17:00Speaker 1: on TV, and it is not. I think what we
- 17:04Speaker 1: tend to do in these movies is try and find
- 17:07Speaker 1: a Honkkah alternative for many Christmas activities, Like we have
- 17:12Speaker 1: a Christmas Street, we need a hanaka bush. No, there's
- 17:15Speaker 1: other traditions that you could have brought in in place
- 17:17Speaker 1: of that to represent that, Like, you don't need a
- 17:19Speaker 1: one for one. It's not just the flip side of Christmas.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It's its own separate thing. Right. Do you any more wishes?
- 17:27Speaker 1: I do? I have a few. We talked about Brooks character.
- 17:31Speaker 1: You like this character. I thought she was a little
- 17:33Speaker 1: tough to warm too, Yeah, a little overly rigid, kind
- 17:38Speaker 1: of a know it all energy that I am not
- 17:41Speaker 1: drawn to. I feel like you're describing me. I really
- 17:46Speaker 1: liked her. I was like, something you hear about her
- 17:48Speaker 1: yourself represented. I did absolutely. The plot told us exactly
- 17:52Speaker 1: where we're going immediately from when Jake's bandmate messes up
- 17:58Speaker 1: the date on the flyer, I was like, Oh, here
- 18:01Speaker 1: we go, Yes, here we go. I knew that Jake
- 18:05Speaker 1: was going to have to be like pulled back to
- 18:07Speaker 1: the city and leave the choir to an actual other
- 18:11Speaker 1: adult who could handle it. I just knew that like
- 18:15Speaker 1: that was going to happen. I actually really liked Dave.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I thought he Dave too a lot of great comic
- 18:20Speaker 1: relief in this. I did too. I thought he was
- 18:22Speaker 1: funny too. But like the writing was on the wall,
- 18:26Speaker 1: my last wish is a personal nope from me the
- 18:30Speaker 1: whole like this isn't a competition. Through line that they
- 18:34Speaker 1: used is like a personal trigger for me personally. I'm
- 18:38Speaker 1: bringing my own baggage. I am projecting my own conversations
- 18:41Speaker 1: in my own home onto this movie right now. When
- 18:45Speaker 1: when I say I'm tired to my husband and he's, oh, well,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I'm tired too. This is not a competition, dude, And
- 18:55Speaker 1: I don't like that. Yeah. The Pain Olympics, the Pain
- 18:59Speaker 1: Olympics exactly. M M, that's all I got, precious, Well,
- 19:04Speaker 1: let's talk. Did you see that? Okay? I only have
- 19:08Speaker 1: one on let's hear it. It is the Hallmark Keepsake
- 19:12Speaker 1: ornaments front and center on the shelves when they are
- 19:15Speaker 1: out shopping. Oh my gosh, it's not even on my list. Yeah,
- 19:19Speaker 1: well here's my list. In the beginning, we have Nikki
- 19:25Speaker 1: with her kids. They're singing Hark the Herald Angels Sing,
- 19:28Speaker 1: and we cut to Jake in his record store and
- 19:31Speaker 1: in the electric guitar version of that song is playing
- 19:34Speaker 1: in the background. It's a nice transition. When Grandma is
- 19:37Speaker 1: resting her broken ankle, she's straight up, we're in heels
- 19:39Speaker 1: doing it. She's not in sweats, she's dressed head to toe.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I've got her nice shoes on. We had another Brad
- 19:45Speaker 1: Paisley song in this movie during the baking montage. I didn't notice.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I show zammed it. And finally, this isn't really a
- 19:54Speaker 1: did to see that. But when Jake's mom disagrees with
- 19:56Speaker 1: every single compliment and that is part of her personality,
- 19:58Speaker 1: that is a go to character trait of mine that
- 20:02Speaker 1: I would like to break myself of. She's like, oh,
- 20:05Speaker 1: the house is a mess. Oh I ruined dinner. Just
- 20:09Speaker 1: just go with it. But how funny is it that
- 20:11Speaker 1: he's like, and you're gonna say this, and you're gonna
- 20:13Speaker 1: say yes, yes. I thought it was great. What did
- 20:16Speaker 1: you rate away to the world, I'm sorry I gave
- 20:20Speaker 1: it two and a half stars. I gave it three
