Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So grim snapshot of our food waste problem. The study
- 0:03Speaker 1: from Otarger UNI says key wes toss out one point
- 0:05Speaker 1: two million tons of food a year. That's about two
- 0:08Speaker 1: hundred and fifty kilograms per person every year. It's basically
- 0:12Speaker 1: not our problem though, it's most of it comes from
- 0:14Speaker 1: the food industry itself. Sophie Wolland is Love Food, Hate Waste,
- 0:18Speaker 1: New Zealand program manager joining me now, Hi, Sophie.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Good morning, Ryan, Good, good to be here.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Good to have you on the show. So we can
- 0:25Speaker 1: blame the food industry for all of this, not us A.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I'd love to point fingers, Ryan, but I think the
- 0:34Speaker 2: data is pretty clear that you know, thirty percent of
- 0:36Speaker 2: food waste is still coming from household, so you and
- 0:39Speaker 2: I do have a part to play in this major problem.
- 0:43Speaker 2: For the good news is there's really some easy solutions
- 0:46Speaker 2: that we can all take to reduce that thirty percent
- 0:49Speaker 2: of household food waste contributing to that massive as you say,
- 0:52Speaker 2: one point two million tons of food going to landfill
- 0:55Speaker 2: every year, Sophie.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Will it ever be zero? I have my mother in
- 0:58Speaker 1: law staying with us, and she said, it's just get
- 1:00Speaker 1: everything that's in the fridge and make something now, don't
- 1:03Speaker 1: I would normally never do that, but she did it,
- 1:05Speaker 1: made a beautiful chicken soup. Put everything in there. Is
- 1:09Speaker 1: it ever going to be zero? Is there any country
- 1:11Speaker 1: who has gotten close to zero? Anyone doing better than us?
- 1:15Speaker 2: There's definitely countries doing better than us. But to answer
- 1:20Speaker 2: the question, will we ever get it to zero? In
- 1:23Speaker 2: the household, it is there's always going to be sorry,
- 1:26Speaker 2: unavoidable food waste. So you know your Apple cares, your
- 1:29Speaker 2: Advocado tips, but there's definitely lots we can do. And
- 1:33Speaker 2: what your mom has suggested with the fridge harvest is
- 1:36Speaker 2: something and love food, hate waste. We love to see
- 1:39Speaker 2: families do. We recommend having a week, sorry a night
- 1:43Speaker 2: every week where you just raid the fridge. We recommend
- 1:47Speaker 2: having it eat me first shelf. So all those little
- 1:49Speaker 2: bits and bobs that you do need to use up
- 1:51Speaker 2: when you have a fridge harvest at high level ready
- 1:55Speaker 2: to go in a good reminder to use them up.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Is part of the problem that the size of the
- 2:00Speaker 1: packaging that we get stuff in.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It can be In some cases you know, definitely instare
- 2:09Speaker 2: the size of the packaging. Lots of multi deals, they
- 2:12Speaker 2: can be quite. You know, they can look from the
- 2:15Speaker 2: outside like a really good deal, but ultimately if you
- 2:19Speaker 2: don't have a plan for that food, then it can
- 2:22Speaker 2: you know, it is likely that it can go off,
- 2:24Speaker 2: that you don't get to it in time, and then
- 2:26Speaker 2: ultimately it ends up in the bin. So we definitely
- 2:29Speaker 2: recommend before you head to the shop to plan your meals.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So we recommend three the four seas check you check
- 2:37Speaker 2: what you've got, choose your meals, and create your list
- 2:39Speaker 2: and head to the shop with that physical list so
- 2:43Speaker 2: you don't get sidetracked by those multi deals or you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: as you say, over buying, but sometimes you know, you
- 2:49Speaker 2: can get a really good deal and with the cost
- 2:51Speaker 2: of living crisis it is. You know, if you've got
- 2:54Speaker 2: the space, then you can purchase in bulk. But we've
- 2:58Speaker 2: just got to make sure that you're storing it correctly.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So if you're not sure how to stoial something, you
- 3:03Speaker 2: can jump onto the Love Food, Hate Waste website. There's
- 3:05Speaker 2: ages in storage guide and I can tell you exactly
- 3:08Speaker 2: how to store your food correctly.
