- 0:00My Playful Wife. Episode 19. What Piyush Built.
- 0:04Written by Mia. Bengaluru in June was a different
- 0:10city from the one we had visited in February.
- 0:13Hotter, the famous greenery visibly under pressure,
- 0:16the air dense and close in a way that Delhi's
- 0:20dry violent summer does not prepare you for.
- 0:23Delhi heat is a furnace. It bakes you clean.
- 0:26Bengaluru heat that June was a held breath, humid
- 0:30and patient, the pre -monsoon weight of a city
- 0:34waiting for rain that would not quite come. You
- 0:37sweated differently there. You moved more slowly.
- 0:40The whole place seemed to be conserving itself.
- 0:44Piyusha's flat felt different too, and the difference
- 0:48told a story before anyone said a word. Mira
- 0:52had moved in, not announced as such. There had
- 0:56been no formal sentence, no we've decided, at
- 0:59least none that had reached us, but present in
- 1:02the full and unmistakable sense, the sense you
- 1:06cannot fake or hide. Her books had migrated onto
- 1:09his shelves and been interleaved with his, which
- 1:12is a more intimate act than it sounds. You do
- 1:15not interleave your books with someone unless
- 1:18you have stopped imagining ever having to separate
- 1:20them again. Her plants stood along the windowsill,
- 1:23three of them, tended, thriving, the particular
- 1:27evidence of a person who intends to be somewhere
- 1:30long enough for things to grow. There was a second
- 1:33toothbrush in the obvious way and a hundred less
- 1:35obvious ways, the reorganization of a shared
- 1:39space that happens gradually and then all at
- 1:42once, when one person stops being a guest in
- 1:44it and starts being part of its structure. The
- 1:47flat had been Piyush's, furnished with his careful
- 1:51bachelor efficiency. It was theirs now. You could
- 1:54feel the grammar of it had changed from singular
- 1:57to plural. I walked through it slowly, the first
- 2:01evening, while Celoni and Mira were occupied
- 2:05in the kitchen, and I felt a thing I had not
- 2:07expected to feel in my younger brother's flat,
- 2:10a kind of awe. He had built this, out of the
- 2:14wreckage of the year, and it had been wreckage
- 2:17for him too. In its way, I had been so occupied
- 2:21with my own that I had sometimes forgotten his.
- 2:24He had gone to a strange city alone and built,
- 2:27from nothing, a whole life. A job he was good
- 2:31at. A flat with good light. A woman whose plants
- 2:35were thriving on his windowsill. The boy who
- 2:38cried at cartoons, who had a cat in his hostel
- 2:41room, who had caused, however unmeaningly, the
- 2:45largest rupture of my adult life, had taken himself
- 2:48off to the south and made something real and
- 2:51good and durable. I stood in the middle of it
- 2:54and was, simply, proud of him. It surprised me,
- 2:58the pride. It had no complication in it at all.
- 3:04We had arrived two days before the dinner, and
- 3:08those two ordinary days were, in their way, more
- 3:12revealing than the event itself. I watched what
- 3:16Piyush had built by watching how the four of
- 3:19us lived inside it. In the mornings he made coffee.
- 3:22He had become, in Bengaluru, a person with opinions
- 3:26about coffee, which would have been unthinkable
- 3:29in the brother I grew up with, a Nagpur boy raised
- 3:32on overboiled chai, and he made it carefully,
- 3:35in a contraption Mira had taught him, and brought
- 3:39it to us with the shy pride of a man showing
- 3:41you a small competence he has earned. I watched
- 3:44him in his own kitchen. I watched him know where
- 3:47things were, reach for them without looking,
- 3:50move through the rooms with the unconscious authority
- 3:53of a person at home in a life he had made rather
- 3:56than inherited. There is a particular way a man
- 3:59stands in a kitchen that is his, that he chose,
- 4:02that he pays for, that he shares with a woman
- 4:05who chose him back. Piyush stood that way now.
- 4:08The boy who had once needed me to fix everything,
- 4:11who had called me at midnight from a hostel about
- 4:14a failed exam, a lost wallet, a girl, stood in
- 4:18his own kitchen in his own city, fixing his own
- 4:21life, and had been doing it for over a year without
- 4:24calling me about any of it. He had stopped needing
- 4:27me to fix things. It is one of the strangest
- 4:30griefs of an older brother, that moment, and
- 4:33one of the proudest. On the second afternoon,
- 4:37Celonie and Mira spread out across the living
- 4:39room floor with Celonie's sketchbook between
- 4:41them. Mira, it turned out, had a good eye, not
- 4:45a maker's eye, but a reader's. The engineer's
- 4:48ability to see where a structure will fail before
- 4:51it fails, and Celonie had begun, over the months
- 4:54of phone calls, to use her as a sounding board
- 4:57for the second collection. I sat in the corner
- 5:00with a book I wasn't reading and listened to
- 5:03the two of them work through a piece, Saloni
- 5:05describing, Mira questioning, the design getting
- 5:09better in the air between them. My wife and my
- 5:12brother's wife -to -be on the floor of the flat
- 5:15my brother built, making something better together.
- 5:18I had a notebook thought I didn't write down,
- 5:21because writing it down would have meant getting
- 5:23up and breaking the thing. That this exact tableau
- 5:26was the answer to every fear I'd carried a year
- 5:29before. That the worst thing that ever happened
- 5:32to me had somehow delivered me here, to a corner
- 5:35of a Bengaluru living room, watching the people
- 5:38I'd been most afraid of losing build things on
- 5:41the floor. Piyush came and sat beside me. He
- 5:46looked at the two women then, at me. It's good,
- 5:50Na, he said finally. Quiet. Just for me. It's
- 5:56good, I said. He took me out that evening, before
- 6:01Mira got home. Men's work, he said, grinning,
- 6:05which meant he wanted to buy things for the dinner
- 6:07and wanted company. We walked to a market near
- 6:10his flat. At the flower stall, he agonized, actually
- 6:14agonized, between two kinds of roses, holding
- 6:18them up in the failing light, and I realized
- 6:21he was nervous. that this man who had built a
- 6:24whole life was nervous about whether his fiancée's
- 6:26mother would like the right flowers, and I felt
- 6:29a rush of tenderness for him so sudden it embarrassed
- 6:32me. That one, I said, to end his suffering. The
- 6:37lighter one. Mothers like the lighter one. He
- 6:41didn't ask how I knew. He bought the lighter
- 6:44one. It is a small thing to be able to do for
- 6:46your brother, to choose his roses, and it is
- 6:49also, I have come to think, Most of what brotherhood
- 6:52is once the big things are done. The choosing
- 6:55of roses, the standing beside, the carrying of
- 6:58half the bags. On the walk back, both our hands
- 7:02full of his careful purchases, flowers for the
- 7:06mother, a sweet he'd been told the father liked.
- 7:09He said, not looking at me, I was so scared you
- 7:13wouldn't come. To this. I told Mira you would,
- 7:17and the whole time I wasn't sure. I came, I said.
- 7:24I'll always come now. That's settled. You don't
- 7:27have to be scared of that one anymore. He nodded
- 7:31fast and busied himself with the sweets, and
- 7:35I looked away at a stall of plastic buckets to
- 7:38give him the second he needed. We carried the
- 7:40flowers and the sweets back to the flat he had
- 7:43built in the city he had chosen, and I thought,
- 7:46this is what he built. Not the flat, not the
- 7:50job, not even Mira, exactly. He built a place
- 7:53where his older brother could walk beside him,
- 7:56carrying somebody's father's favorite sweet and
- 7:59feel nothing but glad. He built his way back
- 8:02to me. That was the construction. The rest was
- 8:05just where it happened. The engagement dinner
- 8:10was at a restaurant Mira had chosen, her city.
- 8:14her ground, the symbolism of it not lost on me.
- 8:18A quiet place in Inderanagar, good food, low
- 8:22light, no performance about it. Mira was not
- 8:26a woman who needed a room to perform. She had
- 8:29chosen a place that let the evening be the evening.
- 8:33Her parents had come up from Mysore, small, Warm
- 8:37people, her mother quick and bird -like and watchful
- 8:40in the way Mira was watchful, so that you could
- 8:43see exactly where the noticing had come from.
- 8:45Her father quiet, courteous, given to long considering
- 8:50pauses before he spoke, after which the thing
- 8:53he said was usually worth the wait. Her younger
- 8:56sister was there too. 19 or 20, with a fierce
- 9:01protective skepticism of a younger sibling examining
- 9:04the person who proposes to take her older sister
- 9:07away. I watched the sister all evening, half
- 9:10covertly, because her arc was the most interesting
- 9:13thing in the room to me. She had arrived, I could
- 9:17tell, prepared to disapprove, the default position
- 9:20of a loving younger sister, and across the length
- 9:24of the dinner, I watched her not disapprove.
- 9:27I watched her watch Piyush be kind to her mother,
- 9:29be easy with her father, be helplessly fond of
- 9:33Mira in the way he could not hide and did not
- 9:36try to, and I watched the skepticism in her face
- 9:39soften, degree by degree, into something that
- 9:42by the end of the evening was a provisional,
- 9:44guarded, real yes. It is a good sign when the
- 9:49protective younger sister comes around. It means
- 9:52the thing is sound. My parents were not there.
- 9:57This requires saying plainly, because it sat
- 10:00under the evening like a stone under shallow
- 10:03water. They had wanted the wedding, not the engagement
- 10:06dinner. There had been a call, and adjustments,
- 10:09and the long, delicate negotiation that families
- 10:12conduct in the spaces around an event, the negotiation
- 10:15about who is owed what, and who will travel when,
- 10:18and whose feelings are being managed by whose
- 10:21absence. My mother had her reasons, some of them
- 10:24about distance and her knees and the expense
- 10:26of two trips, and some of them about other things
- 10:29she would never say, and I would never make her
- 10:32say. I had spoken to her the week before, on
- 10:35the phone, and the conversation had been full
- 10:38of the things she did not ask. And Saloni as
- 10:41well? And the two of you you are everything is?
- 10:44The sentences trailing off into the places she
- 10:48would not go. She knew something. Mothers always
- 10:51know something. They know it the way you know
- 10:54weather is coming. In the joints, without evidence.
- 10:58She did not know what, and she would not ask,
- 11:01and I would not tell her. And we conducted the
- 11:04whole call in that careful weather of the unasked,
- 11:07and at the end she said, You sound well, Beta.
- 11:11You sound settled. And there was a question folded
- 11:14inside the observation, and I said, I am, Ma.
- 11:19I'm well. We're well, and let that be the answer
- 11:23to the question she hadn't quite asked. Saloni
- 11:27handled the dinner the way Saloni handles everything
- 11:30that matters, with complete competence and the
- 11:33specific, deliberate warmth of a woman who has
- 11:36decided to be entirely present. She sat herself
- 11:41next to Mira's mother, chose the seat I noticed.
- 11:44She does not leave such things to chance. and
- 11:48within 20 minutes had the small bird -like woman
- 11:50laughing, really laughing, a hand to her mouth,
- 11:54charmed past her own caution. She spoke about
- 11:57Piyush with the ease of a person who knew him
- 12:00well and thought well of him, which was entirely
- 12:03true, whatever else was also true, and her warmth
- 12:07for him was real in a way that I watched Mira
- 12:10notice from across the table and visibly relax
- 12:13into. Because Mira, of all people, would have
- 12:17been alert to it, would have been watching, with
- 12:20her noticing eyes, for any false note in the
- 12:23warmth of this sister -in -law toward the man
- 12:26she was marrying, any hairline crack of complication.
- 12:29There was none to find. Saloni's gladness for
- 12:33my brother was, by that June, entirely uncomplicated.
- 12:38Whatever else she felt, she had carried off somewhere
- 12:41private and sat down, and what she brought to
- 12:44that table was clean. I watched Mira find nothing
- 12:47to worry about and put her worry down, and I
- 12:51thought, that is a gift my wife is giving her,
- 12:54deliberately, the gift of an untroubled evening,
- 12:57and Mira is wise enough to know it is a gift.
- 13:03After dinner, I went outside to stand on the
- 13:06street for a moment. the way you do, to let a
- 13:09full evening settle. The Inderonegger night was
- 13:12warm and busy, scooters and dogs and the lit
- 13:16fronts of other restaurants, the hell -breath
- 13:19air still waiting for its rain. Piyush came out
- 13:23and found me. Biyahi said, It was a good evening,
- 13:29I said. Yes. He stood beside me. The two of us
- 13:36looking at the street rather than at each other,
- 13:38which is the only way brothers can say certain
- 13:41things. He was quiet for a moment, and then he
- 13:44started a sentence he couldn't finish. She's,
- 13:48he stopped, tried again, and got further. I didn't
- 13:52know it could be like this. Yeah, I didn't know.
- 13:55What she is. What we are when we're, I keep waiting
- 13:59to understand it, and instead I just keep being
- 14:02in it. Is that normal? That you don't understand
- 14:06it. You just live in it. That's normal, I said.
- 14:11You don't understand it. You don't get to. You
- 14:15just get to be in it. The understanding comes
- 14:18later, in pieces, years later, and even then
- 14:21only some of it. Is that how it was, he said.
- 14:26With you and Celonie? At the start. I thought
- 14:31about the start. The real start. Not the wedding,
- 14:34which had been a settled, comfortable arrangement
- 14:37between two people who liked each other, but
- 14:39the other start, the one in the kitchen a year
- 14:42and a half ago, the balcony with the watering
- 14:45can in my hands, and the morning rearranging
- 14:48itself around what I had just understood. The
- 14:51start of actually being married, which had come,
- 14:54in our case, absurdly late and at terrible cost,
- 14:58years after the wedding. Yes, I said, differently.
- 15:04By a different road than yours. But yes. There
- 15:07was a time I didn't understand any of it, and
- 15:10just had to live inside it, and trust that the
- 15:13understanding would come. Some of it has. Most
- 15:17of it hasn't. I've made my peace with living
- 15:20inside the part one don't understand. He was
- 15:24quiet, taking that in. I'm glad you're here,
- 15:28he said. For this. That we could. He gestured,
- 15:34Vaguely. At the air. At the restaurant behind
- 15:37us where his fiancé sat with my wife. At all
- 15:40of it. The whole improbable assembled shape of
- 15:44where we had arrived. He didn't have the words
- 15:47either. We are not, in my family, a people with
- 15:51the words. That we could just have a dinner.
- 15:54That my brother could come to my engagement and
- 15:57it could be good. Easy. I didn't think we'd get
- 16:01here. There was a stretch I was sure we'd lost
- 16:04it, you and me. That whatever happened had broken
- 16:07it past fixing. I know, I said. I thought so
- 16:13too for a while. What changed, he said. I considered
- 16:20the honest answer. I decided I'd rather have
- 16:23a brother than be right, I said. That was most
- 16:27of it. It turned out not to be a close decision
- 16:30once I actually looked at it. Being right is
- 16:33very cold. I'd had enough of being cold. He turned
- 16:39and looked at me then, and his young face in
- 16:41the restaurant light was doing something it was
- 16:44struggling to hold, and I looked back at the
- 16:46street to give him the unwatched second, the
- 16:49way Mira had taught me, the way Mira gave it
- 16:52to Saloni across a dinner table months before.
- 16:55We are all of us. all the time, giving each other
- 16:59unwatched seconds. It is most of what love is
- 17:03when you strip it down, the willingness to look
- 17:06away at the right moment. Through the restaurant
- 17:10window, I could see the two women, Saloni and
- 17:13Mira, sitting close now that the parents had
- 17:16moved off, their heads angled toward each other,
- 17:19deep in something that was theirs and private
- 17:22and complete. Whatever they were saying, it did
- 17:25not need us. It was its own conversation, the
- 17:29one between the two women who anchored the four
- 17:31of us, and I was glad it existed, glad my wife
- 17:35and my brother's wife -to -be had found in each
- 17:38other a thing that was wholly their own. I put
- 17:42my hand on my brother's shoulder. She's the right
- 17:46one, I said. You know that. The sister came around.
- 17:51The mother's already in love with her own daughter's
- 17:54husband. Mira looks at you like you're the answer
- 17:57to a question she'd given up asking. She's the
- 18:01right one. Yes, he said. His voice was not quite
- 18:06steady. I know. We stood there a while longer
- 18:11on the warm street, two brothers, not talking
- 18:14now, the talking done, just standing in the night
- 18:17outside the place where the women we loved were
- 18:19sitting with their heads together, and the city
- 18:21held its breath around us. waiting for the rain
- 18:24that would come, eventually, the way it always
- 18:27does, the way everything does, in its own time,
- 18:31when the weight of the waiting finally tips over
- 18:33into the thing itself. Saloni found us there
- 18:37a few minutes later, come out to see where we
- 18:40had gone, and stood on my other side, and the
- 18:43three of us looked at the warm waiting street,
- 18:45and she put her arm through mine the way she
- 18:48had after the show. None of us said anything.
- 18:51And then the first fat drop of the season's rain
- 18:54landed on the pavement at our feet, dark as a
- 18:57dropped coin, and then another, and then it came.
